Summary

The lecture presents Christ’s Body and Blood as the indispensable food of the soul and urges Christians to receive Holy Communion regularly rather than only on major feasts. Worthy Communion requires sincere desire, repentance, timely confession, spiritual guidance, and participation in the Divine Liturgy rather than hurried reception motivated by custom or social pressure. The lecture warns that receiving without self-examination, repentance, confession, and a spiritual father’s blessing resembles Judas’s betrayal and turns a life-giving mystery into judgment.

My beloved listeners in Christ, rejoice in the Lord. The good God has granted that we should be together once again, so that we may say a few words about matters concerning our immortal soul. With the grace of God, of course, I would like to speak about something

that concerns the food, one might say, of our immortal soul. As you know, this food is nothing other than the Body and Blood of our Christ. My purpose and desire is, if possible, to awaken some souls who do not respond to the invitation the Church addresses to us at every Divine Liturgy: “With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near.” There are, of course, various reasons why people do not respond, but most of them have no sound basis. Therefore, with the grace of God, I will try to offer some guidance for those who truly wish to begin. For, as you know, there are Christians who have not received Holy Communion for years and years.

There are also those who are content to receive Holy Communion two or three times a year, and you understand how mistaken this really is. In any case, the devil’s greatest success in this matter comes through sins and the passions. Certainly, the sins and passions into which Satan drives us are not, in themselves, such a great victory for him, because even the greatest sinner can be saved and avoid spiritual death. But if that person is not saved, the devil is then certain that he has us firmly in his grasp.

If a person is willing, things can change. The devil’s greatest success in his warfare against man—and, one might say, his most diabolical cunning—is to deprive a person of the food of his soul, and to make him accept this deprivation willingly. Sadly, the devil has managed to make man feel neither the hunger nor the thirst of his soul. He no longer feels his need for spiritual nourishment, but directs all his attention and concern toward the body alone. The devil has deadened within the hearts of Christians their hunger for the soul’s food, which, as I have said, is none other than the Body and Blood of our Christ. My beloved, we have reached the sorrowful state in which some Christians receive Holy Communion only at Christmas and Pascha, and perhaps also at the Dormition Fast. Some have not received for years; others have never received again in their lives since the days when their mother or grandmother led them by the hand to Church. So let us state it clearly from the outset.

It is a matter of life and death. My dear friend, you cannot be a Christian—you cannot call yourself a Christian—if you do not regularly receive the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Anyone who reads the New Testament and accepts what the Christian Church—the Orthodox Church—established and practiced from the very beginning, anyone who wishes to be a true Christian and not merely one in name, feels deep within himself a hunger for the Bread of Life and strives to receive the Body and Blood of Christ as often as possible. Do not remember the food of your soul only at Christmas and Pascha, or at most also during the Dormition Fast, as I said before, because to receive Holy Communion

only two or three times in an entire year is a penance imposed by the Church on those who have fallen into certain very grave sins, especially those who have married three times. Christ’s desire, the command of the Church, and the eternal welfare of our soul all call us to receive Holy Communion, if possible, every time we go to Church and stand before the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. The first Christians received every day. Later, in the time of Basil the Great, we find that they received

four times a week. Since the full Divine Liturgy is not celebrated on the weekdays of Great Lent, the Church appointed the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts to be celebrated twice a week. Furthermore, according to the sixty-sixth Canon of the Sixth Ecumenical Council, Christians are required to attend Church throughout the whole week of Pascha, which is regarded as one single day belonging to the Lord, as we have said, and to receive the immaculate Mysteries every day, so that through this daily receiving of the Holy Gifts they may be raised together with Christ and lifted up together with Him. Going even further,

the ninth Apostolic Canon, which was confirmed by the Sixth Ecumenical Council, imposes excommunication on Christians who attend the Divine Liturgy and then leave without receiving Holy Communion. Today, of course, this Canon may seem somewhat excessive to us, because the error and ignorance of Christians today have themselves become so excessive.

It will not seem excessive at all if we consider the purpose of the Divine Liturgy, and if we carefully attend to its petitions and prayers—to what is said and what takes place during that sacred time. In its first part, the Divine Liturgy is the celebration of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist; in its second, it is the faithful’s receiving of the Holy Gifts.

Very reasonably, then, Saint John Chrysostom asks: “Tell me, please: if you are invited to a meal, wash your hands, and sit down at the table, will you not eat? And if you do not eat, do you not thereby insult the one who invited you?” For this reason, in the first centuries, after the reading of the Apostle and the Gospel, the catechumens and penitents departed from the Church, and only those who were ready to receive Holy Communion remained. “All you faithful, again and again, let us pray to the Lord,” we hear the deacon proclaim. There is therefore one proper path that you must follow

in this great matter: take care to go regularly and frequently to Holy Confession. Cleanse your soul, and your spiritual father, according to the condition of your soul, will determine how often you should receive Holy Communion. For not all people are alike, nor are their lives alike. May the Lord soon count us worthy to return to the life of the early Church and receive Holy Communion every day. Then, and only then, would we see the renewal of the Church for which we long so deeply today. Then thousands of Saints would once again be formed each day, and society would see better days.

Heaven would be filled, so to speak.

From the first disciples of the Holy Apostles down to the present day, my beloved, all the Holy Fathers and writers of the Church have seemed to vie with one another over who could best describe the greatness of the Mystery and who could recount the countless and priceless gifts bestowed upon the faithful through receiving the Body and Blood of Christ. Saint Clement of Alexandria, for example, presents Christ Himself saying to the believer: “I nourish you, giving you Myself as bread.” Whoever eats this bread will not taste death, because every day he receives within himself the drink of immortality.

Saint John Chrysostom also speaks, as always, with vivid and compelling words: “We are nourished by that Body which the angels behold with trembling, and which they dare not gaze upon directly without fear. This is the blameless and pure Body of Christ, united with the divine nature, and through it we exist and live. Through this Body we are no longer dust and ashes; we are no longer captives, but free. Through this Body we hope to enjoy Heaven and its blessings: immortal life, life with the angels, and fellowship with Christ.” The divine Father continues: “The Holy Table of the Holy Eucharist is the sinew of our soul, our hope and salvation, our light and our life. Armed, then, with the provision of Holy Communion, we shall depart for the life to come and pass through the gates of Heaven with boldness.” And he continues: “Whatever is most precious there in Heaven, I shall show you here below upon the earth. In a royal palace, the most precious thing is neither the walls nor the golden roof, but the body of the king seated upon the throne. So too in Heaven,

the most precious thing is the Body of the King—that is, of our Christ. And this very Body you can behold even now, here upon the earth. I do not show you angels or archangels,” the same Father adds, “but the Lord of them all. Do you see how you behold upon the earth what is most precious of all? And you not only behold Him, but touch Him; and you not only touch Him, but eat Him, receive Him within yourself, and carry Him away with you.” We must therefore receive the Body and Blood of Christ continually, adds another eminent theologian of the fourteenth century, Nicholas Cabasilas, so that our spiritual life may remain vigorous.

The Bread of Life makes us members of Christ. Through this union, we who are mortal become immortal; from foolish we become wise; from slaves of sin we become righteous and children of God. The Bread of Life—the Body of Christ which we receive here and which we shall take as our eternal provision when we depart from this world—is the very same glorious and incorruptible Body that will appear on the day of the Second Coming, coming upon the clouds. Then the Lord will appear in glory and take with Him only those who became His own members by receiving His Body and

His Blood. For, as you know, He says: “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His Blood, you have no life in you.” And elsewhere He says: “He who eats My flesh and drinks My Blood abides in Me, and I in him; and I will raise him up on the last day.”

My beloved, with deep emotion and wonder we stand before the courage and heroism with which the martyrs of our faith faced a dreadful death. But what was the secret of their victory?

What was the all-powerful weapon they carried with them, enabling them to go forward toward that terrible death not merely without fear, but rejoicing and chanting hymns? On the eve of their martyrdom, they had one longing and one anxious concern: that they should not be deprived of what gave them life and strengthened them throughout their lives.

The blood of the first Martyr, the blood of victory—the receiving of the Holy Eucharist. And despite all the dangers and difficulties, the Church made every sacrifice to send this final provision for the journey to those imprisoned heroes who were awaiting death. How much more necessary is this final provision for us, who are lukewarm in faith and careless in the way we live! With what courage and what strength will we face the dread hour of death, at the twilight of our life, on its final evening?

The one thing we shall need is precisely what our Lord handed down on the final evening of His earthly life, at the Mystical Supper. What did He hand down? The immaculate Mysteries. These are what we need. We must tell our family now that the first thing they are to do when we fall ill is to call not only the doctor but also the priest, so that he may hear our confession and give us Holy Communion. They must not go so far as to prevent the priest from coming, with the foolish—not to say irreverent—thought that we will supposedly become frightened and death will come more quickly.

This is blasphemy against Christ and against receiving His Body and Blood, which are the fountain of life and the medicine of immortality. So let us tell them now not to wait until our condition becomes grave, as we say, and not to leave it until our final moments, when we are no longer conscious, because then it will be too late. The priest cannot and must not administer the Mysteries to someone who has no awareness or understanding. Holy Communion is not offered to bodies, my dear friends, that are barely breathing. We might say that those Christians who remember that they ought to receive Holy Communion only at Christmas and Pascha are making a grave mistake.

And the way they receive Holy Communion is a whole chain of errors—a chain that may bind them, we might say, once and for all in eternal Hell. Their first mistake is that they remember their foremost Christian duty only twice a year.

The second is that many do not even remember it themselves. Their parents, spouse, child, or another relative reminds them, often even applying some pressure. Holy Communion that is not received freely and willingly, and indeed with longing and desire, my dear friends, is not true communion.

Their third mistake is that they approach the Mystery spiritually unprepared, without metanoia, without confession, and without their spiritual father’s blessing. Some remember confession only in the final days or at the very last moment—on the eve of the feast itself, or even during the Divine Liturgy.

As a result, they place themselves in a harsh dilemma and in a difficult position. Naturally, the spiritual father cannot hear the confessions of all those who gather in the final days and at the last moment. What, then, is to be done, someone may ask? How many have the courage and good sense not to receive Holy Communion without confession, but to return after Christmas or Pascha—to postpone it, in other words? Or will they ignore the weight of their guilt and dare to receive merely because they have prepared themselves psychologically to do so? And finally, there is the serious error made by thousands of our Christians: they come to church early in the morning on Christmas Eve or on Great Thursday, hurriedly light a candle, and rush straight to the Holy Doors to receive Holy Communion. Then they rush out of the church again to hurry off to work. How terribly all these people deceive themselves!

Holy Communion received in this manner can in no way benefit a person; it brings harm and even destruction. This is not right, my dear friends. You cannot receive Holy Communion without attending the Divine Liturgy. Do not persist in this unreasonable demand and place the priest in a difficult position. You have work and are in a hurry. Then there is a proper solution—the right way to receive Holy Communion truly, rather than bring condemnation upon yourself. Wait and receive during the Divine Liturgy on Christmas Day or Pascha itself, after first attending the celebration of the Mystery. Spiritual fathers and preachers continually warn us about all these things: do not wait only for Christmas and Pascha.

Do not receive Holy Communion without going to confession. Never leave confession until the final days, and never receive Holy Communion without having attended the Divine Liturgy. Sadly, all these things do happen, and for that reason the fruits of Holy Communion are not always as joyful as they ought to be. Many mothers also do not know how they should bring their children to Holy Communion.

Sadly, instructions like these are not printed in the fashionable magazines that may be lying on their bedside tables or beside their pillows. One cannot help feeling sorry for these modern mothers, who do not know even when they should go to church,

nor even how to hold their baby properly for Holy Communion, without the child struggling and without the danger that the immaculate Mysteries may be spilled and profaned. First of all, then, a Christian mother should not take her baby to church on Sunday or on another great feast, unless there is some reason why another day would not be more convenient. She should take the child on a day when the Divine Liturgy normally ends earlier—on Saturday, if possible—and she should not arrive excessively early. She should ask beforehand approximately when the Divine Liturgy will end and bring the baby shortly before that time. A baby does not know how to wait; the mother herself will suffer, and she will weary everyone else as well.

As the mother approaches, sensible Christians should not give commands or shout, because this only frightens and agitates the infant even more. At the final moment, she should hold the child gently but firmly in her arms, supporting the baby on her right arm and giving her full attention to keeping the little head and hands still.

With her free left hand, she should carefully spread the holy communion cloth beneath the baby’s chin. With her finger, she should very gently open the child’s lips, so that the holy spoon does not touch anywhere else and so that the infant does not cough or suddenly move its tongue and knock the Holy Pearl out of its mouth.

With the same care, she should then wipe the child’s lips. She must immediately release the holy communion cloth and not forgetfully hold on to it, because she could pull the covering and drag the entire Holy Chalice with it. She must also avoid the bad habit of talking at that moment and trying to calm the infant by saying, for example, that it will be given a sweet, a little wine, a golden tooth, or anything of that kind, because such expressions are irreverent. At most, if she must say something, she should tell the child that it is going to receive little Christ. That is the right thing to say. Now, how often should mothers bring their children to Holy Communion? It would be good for them not to neglect weekly Holy Communion for their children, especially while they are infants.

But let us stop here and, God willing, continue next time. God is our helper. My dear listeners in Christ, rejoice in the Lord. As you see, the good God has granted that we should be together once again to say a few words, completing our previous subject, which concerned Holy Communion for both adults and children. We spoke about how necessary Holy Communion is for the human soul, how much adults need it, and how much children need it as well. I believe the time has come, now that knowledge has increased so greatly, for this ignorance to end in this matter too, because sadly, such ignorance is deadly. It is time for us to emerge, we might say, from the darkness of lack of knowledge and ignorance. If we wish to be true Christians, we must make sure, without delay, that we learn properly and correctly when and how we should receive Holy Communion. There should no longer be people today who claim to be scandalized because they grow tired of waiting for those who receive when the priest calls, “With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near,”

or because they see many Christians receiving frequently. All such people must learn that the Divine Liturgy is celebrated chiefly for those who are prepared to receive Holy Communion, not for the others. All the rest are permitted to remain through the Church’s condescension and leniency, we might say. And so that they may not depart entirely without the grace of God, the Church has provided that at the end of the Divine Liturgy—not before it—they should receive, in place of the Gift that is the receiving of the Body and Blood of Christ, what is called the antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after the Liturgy.

Therefore, let our impatient Christians—those who, sadly, live in ignorance even in the midst of the twentieth century—not be in such a hurry. Instead of sinning by unjustly judging the priest and the faithful who receive Holy Communion, let them also struggle, if they wish, to correct their error and become true Christians: Christians who understand that the Divine Liturgy has one purpose and one purpose alone—that we should receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Certain people must also cease being scandalized when they see many of the faithful

approaching the Mystery frequently. Through their comments and whispering, these people force many Christians who have recently returned to the Church, who also wish to receive frequently but are still somewhat unsteady, to move from church to church in order to escape those eyes and tongues that tear them apart. Stop this criminal behavior, then, my dear friends—I implore you, whoever you may be. You have the right to remain in the darkness of ignorance and to refuse to put your life in order so that you may fulfill the command of Christ and of the Church, which is frequent Holy Communion. But by what right do you demand that others follow you into your error and sin? That is the question. Why do you not rejoice in the progress of others, but instead grieve—as someone else also grieves at that very moment? Who might that be? The Evil One, the devil. He too grieves when he sees people who are struggling draw more frequently into contact and communion with Christ, their Creator and Savior. Therefore, do not provoke the wrath of God, for woe to the person whose words create stumbling blocks

and prevent even one soul from advancing along the path of salvation. I also want you to know that there are Christians who preserve the devout ancient tradition of offering the necessary provisions together with their names, so that they may be commemorated at forty Divine Liturgies—the so-called Forty Liturgies. This is very good and greatly beneficial for those who keep this tradition, provided that it is done properly. It is not enough merely to send the prosphoron and your names. If possible, you should arrange your affairs so that at least one member of the family attends each Divine Liturgy in turn. And if it is not practical for you to receive Holy Communion at all forty Divine Liturgies, try at least to receive at most of them. I believe the time has come for all the mistaken notions we have mentioned, and any others that may still exist, to disappear. Then the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, my dear friends, may once again become what it truly is: the magnet that draws all Christians around it frequently and steadfastly. May we soon reach that blessed and enviable time. A Christian

should also prepare to receive Holy Communion on the day of his or her patronal feast. Likewise, a Christian prepares—and ought to prepare—for Holy Matrimony. At the Divine Liturgy celebrated for the memorial of a loved one, one should also receive Holy Communion. At every solemn moment and on every occasion of sorrow or joy, the first things on our schedule should be the Divine Liturgy and the receiving of the Holy Gifts. Paul, writing to the Corinthians in chapter 11, verse 26, says succinctly: “Do this in remembrance of Me.”

“For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.” But our exhortation is not only that we should approach regularly and more frequently, but also, if possible, worthily. For before each of us comes to Holy Communion, the Church reminds us of the words: “I will not give You a kiss like Judas.” You have surely heard these words from the hymn of Great Thursday many times, at the moment

when we are approaching to receive Holy Communion. The Church certainly reminds us, at this sacred hour of the dread Mystery, of the dreadful example of Judas for a reason. We must therefore take heed. We must take heed every time we prepare to receive Holy Communion. At that hour, for example, we say to Christ: “My Christ, I will not give You a traitorous kiss like Judas.” What does this mean? It means that I will not dare to approach the Mystery of Mysteries without metanoia—without repentance—and without my spiritual father’s blessing. What did Judas do? He dared to receive Holy Communion together with the other Apostles, while Satan sat enthroned within his darkened soul and he had already agreed to betray his Teacher. Every Christian does the same when he approaches Holy Communion without first making a sincere confession of his sins and without receiving absolution and his spiritual father’s blessing. Let us take heed, lest we too be condemned like Judas. For today, unfortunately, many Christians receive Holy Communion without Confession and without any preparation, merely out of habit, “for good luck,” as they say. Indeed, we have the mistaken impression that the day of the feast itself

makes them worthy to receive Holy Communion, and they forget what the priest proclaims at that moment: “The Holy Gifts are for the holy.” These Holy Mysteries are fitting only for those who are being cleansed, who repent of their sins, and who struggle to become holy. Only to such people should they be given. They forget this. They forget that while Holy Communion grants forgiveness of sins and eternal life to those who receive worthily—that is, with proper preparation—it plunges into sin and sends to eternal Hell those who approach without metanoia, without repentance, and without Confession. We must understand this and become firmly convinced of it. This is why the Apostle Paul cries aloud to us all: “Let each person carefully examine himself, and thus, having prepared himself, let him eat of the consecrated bread and drink from the consecrated cup. For whoever eats and drinks unworthily eats and drinks eternal condemnation upon himself, because he does not discern the Body and Blood of the Lord, but consumes them as though they were ordinary food. That is why,” he adds, “many among you are weak and gravely ill, and a number have died.” “Let a man examine himself,” he says,

“and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup,” as we read in the First Epistle to the Corinthians, chapter eleven, verse twenty-eight. Let us also take an example and shape our conduct accordingly. When you are expecting a visitor, you do everything you can to prepare your home, and the welcome you arrange corresponds both to your guest’s rank and to the feelings you have for him. That, I think, is how it is. Then, when you are about to receive Holy Communion, do you reflect at all upon this simple yet great truth? The One who is about to enter the house of your soul is above all: your Creator, your Lord and your God. At the same time, He is—or ought to be—the person dearest to you. You owe Him gratitude and love. Why? Because He sacrificed His life and shed His Blood for your eternal salvation. What preparation and what welcome, then, are worthy of this great Guest? These are thoughts we must consider. Only one thing, my beloved,

does the Lord ask of us: that we cleanse our soul of our sins. They prevent Him from entering and sanctifying us. They drive Him from our soul. Through Confession, therefore, take care to cleanse the house of your soul thoroughly. Sweep every corner well, even its most hidden places. Fill it with the fragrance of your fervent prayer, and be certain that the outcome will be good. Pay attention also to fasting, as your spiritual father personally directs you. It is true

that fasting is necessary, but its form and measure vary according to the person. Your spiritual father must make this judgment. You should speak with him directly, so that he knows exactly who stands before him and can determine how strict or lenient your fast should be. Also, if possible, from midnight until the moment you receive Holy Communion, put nothing in your mouth, not even water. Besides the fast on Wednesday and Friday, your spiritual father may prescribe an additional fast according to your circumstances in life and the personal needs

of your soul, as I said before. For this reason, it is most reasonable and proper not to tell others what fast your spiritual father has prescribed for you. Otherwise confusion arises, and those who hear you may think that it is a general rule, when in fact it is something individual and personal, suited to you and to you alone, which your spiritual father has given you. Another person’s circumstances are different; that person will arrange matters with his own spiritual father. What is generally recommended to everyone approaching Holy Communion is not a particular quantity or kind of fasting. It is preparation of the soul, which is absolutely necessary.

On the preceding day, one thought should rule your nous—your spiritual intellect—your words, your deeds, and every aspect of your life. “On Sunday, for example, I will receive Holy Communion. Once again, the greatest event of my life will take place for me,” you will say. “Christ Himself will enter my heart once more. What, then, shall I do? I will take heed. I will take great care and struggle so that my heart may be free of improper desires, my nous free of unworthy logismoi—intrusive thoughts—my eyes pure so that they may behold the Holy God, and my hands pure as they take hold of the holy communion cloth,

and so that my lips and tongue, which will receive the greatest and most ineffable honor of bearing the immaculate Body and precious Blood of my Master and God, may also be pure. Nor will I forget to be reconciled even with my greatest enemy and to cleanse my heart of every desire for revenge and every grudge.” My prayer, too, will be centered on all these things. With every passing day and every passing hour it will grow more fervent, reaching its height on the eve of Communion, when, with katanyxis—with compunction—I will read, if possible, the Office of Preparation for Holy Communion; and then during the Divine Liturgy, my entire being

will be transformed into a fiery Seraph, no longer treading upon the earth but humbly prostrate before the throne of the Most High. For Paul says in First Corinthians, chapter ten, verse twenty-one: “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.” We should recite those beautiful words given to us by the Church with profound awe, because, unfortunately, even to the very last moment we still bear our weaknesses.

Consider what the prayer says: “I stand before the doors of Your temple.”

And I am ready to open my mouth, yet I am still assailed by my weaknesses. Consider, then, how a person must prepare himself in order to enter into this communion with his Creator.

Now you are inside the Church, and every passing moment brings you nearer to a new Pascha in your life. “Behold, I approach divine Communion. O Creator, do not burn me through my partaking, for You are fire, consuming the unworthy.” Immortal words that we have learned, words that help us. How, then, will you stand? How will you approach? It would be

impossible for us not to observe, with great sorrow, how carelessly many Christians approach to receive Holy Communion. Stand to one side with awe and katanyxis—with compunction—my beloved. Pray humbly, like the Publican. Let only drops of tears spring from your eyes, and only voiceless groans stir your breast. How else, my beloved, can anyone stand when he considers and measures the height of God’s holiness against the depth of our sinfulness? And at that moment, how can anyone experience anything except the Creator’s infinite forbearance and condescension, as He deigns to offer Himself to His creature under the humble forms of bread and wine? Let there be complete silence, fervent prayer, and the lifting of soul and heart toward Heaven. And when you hear, “With the fear of God,” begin to move forward on tiptoe. Do not hurry! The person who truly senses the majesty and holiness of these moments waits, if possible, until last. He makes use even of the final moments to pray inwardly to his Creator and implore Him that receiving His Holy Body and Blood may not consume his sinful and unworthy soul.

Pronounce each word distinctly, as we said: “Behold, I approach divine Communion. O Creator, do not burn me through my partaking, for You are fire, consuming the unworthy; but cleanse me from every stain.” A Christian woman, in particular, should pay close attention to her outward appearance as well. As she prepares and adorns her soul to receive her God, she has little time left to adorn herself outwardly. She does not paint her lips but leaves them as the Creator fashioned them, so that He may redden them with His Most Holy Blood, purify and sanctify them, and ensure that they never again become occasions or instruments of sin. Modesty and the fear of God in the presence of the Lord and His angels should characterize,

my beloved, her clothing, her manner of walking, and all her movements. When at last we stand before the Holy Chalice, we will feel something of what the holy angels feel as they stand before the heavenly throne of God, covering their faces with their wings and not daring to look directly upon the divine glory. We will feel something of what the Prophet Isaiah experienced so intensely while in ecstasy before the heavenly altar, causing these words to come from his mouth: “Woe is me, a sinner! How can this be? I am an unclean man, dwelling among a people of unclean lips; how can I behold Almighty God, the Lord of Sabaoth, with these eyes of clay?” Yes, my beloved, let us carefully place our tongue beneath the Most Holy and Life-giving Body of our Christ.

And let us hear our angel whisper to us the consoling words spoken by the Seraph to the Prophet Isaiah: “Fear no longer; do not despair because of your sins. Behold, this has touched your lips; it will take away your iniquities and cleanse your sins.” “Yes, make me a dwelling place of the Spirit alone, and no longer a dwelling place of sin,” as our Holy Church says. As I bring this second part to a close, I pray to the Holy God that we may be counted worthy to partake frequently and worthily of the Body and Blood of the Lord, unto eternal and immortal life, which I wish for one another and for all. Amen. God is our helper.

Με συγκίνηση και θαυμασμό, θα μπορούσε να πει κανείς, αγαπητοί μου, στεκόμαστε μπροστά στην ανδρεία και στον ηρωισμό με τον οποίο αντιμετώπιζαν το φρικτό θάνατο οι μάρτυρες της πίστεώς μας. Ποιο όμως ήταν το μυστικό της νίκης τους;

Το αίμα του πρώτου μάρτυρος, το αίμα της νίκης, τη μετάληψη της Θείας Ευχαριστίας. Και η Εκκλησία, παρ' όλους τους κινδύνους και τις δυσκολίες, εφρόντιζε με κάθε θυσία να στέλνει στους φυλακισμένους και μελλοθανάτους ήρωες το τελευταίο εφόδιο. Πόσο περισσότερο απαραίτητο είναι αυτό το τελευταίο εφόδιο για μας τους χλιαρούς στην πίστη και απρόσεκτους στη ζωή μας! Με τι θάρρος και με ποια δύναμη θα αντιμετωπίσουμε τη φοβερή ώρα του θανάτου, στο δειλινό της ζωής μας, στο τελευταίο βράδυ της;
