Summary

Near the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, the lecture follows the clergy’s communion, the Paschal hymns, and the preparation of the remaining Lamb for the faithful, who are summoned to draw near with the fear of God, faith, and love. It laments the loss of frequent, properly prepared communion and criticizes disorderly practices that treat antidoron as more important than the Holy Gifts, while explaining the proper reverence, timing, and ecclesiastical order surrounding both. The final rites and prayers complete the liturgy’s movement through Christ’s Incarnation, Cross, Resurrection, and Ascension, and the speaker urges the faithful to learn its meaning so that they may participate with attention and be spiritually renewed.

Our subject will continue from the previous talk. You will remember that we are nearing the end of the Divine Liturgy, and more specifically, we have reached the point at which the clergy receive Holy Communion within the sanctuary.

In the previous talk, we discussed the words exchanged between the deacon and the priest.

Both were about to receive Holy Communion, and both did so; and each in turn said the words of Isaiah: “Behold, this has touched your lips; it shall take away your iniquities and cleanse your sins.” Then, because the Divine Liturgy is a joyful event, as we have said, there follow several joyful passages from the Liturgy of the Resurrection—three or four hymns: “Having Beheld the Resurrection of Christ,” “Shine, Shine,” “O divine, O beloved, O sweetest voice,” and “O great and most sacred Pascha, Christ.”

These are words we hear especially during the Paschal season. They are joyful passages because, as we have said, the whole Divine Liturgy encompasses the entire economy of the Incarnation: Christ’s descent, His journey toward the Crucifixion, His Resurrection, and now, in what follows, His Ascension.

But another event comes in between. Now that those within the sanctuary have received Holy Communion, they prepare to give Holy Communion to those outside as well. Normally, there should be people outside who are ready to receive. Unfortunately, there are also occasions when there is not even a small child there to receive Holy Communion.

This, of course, is very sad. The very purpose for which the Divine Liturgy was celebrated has not been fulfilled. Someone may naturally ask, “Was there no purpose, then? Did it benefit no one?” It benefited the departed. They were benefited; in an indirect way, they received Communion. But the others were entirely inconsistent: they did not prepare, and they did not come for the Holy Eucharist. They simply came to Church without paying attention to the reason why the Divine Liturgy is celebrated.

Since there should normally be people outside who are ready to receive Holy Communion, the remainder of the Lamb must be placed in the Chalice. The Lamb, which represents Jesus Christ, was divided into its four portions, and the priest—or bishop—and the deacon received Holy Communion from it.

Normally, two portions still remain. These must be placed in the Holy Chalice and brought out through the doors to be given to the faithful with the exhortation: “With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near.”

This threefold requirement is essential for every faithful person who is about to draw near. First, the fear of God is necessary. This means knowing before Whom and for what you are about to approach, rather than coming casually and without preparation. To say, “I fear God,” means: I take God into account, I give heed to God, and I reverence God.

When Scripture says that a wife should fear her husband, it means that she should respect him, take him into account, and give heed to him.

A God-fearing person depends upon God in everything and does nothing without first looking upward to Him. Such is the person who fears God.

There are people who do not fear God. They fear the public prosecutor or some other person, yet they do not fear God. And still, man ought to fear God. There are two things, of course, that man must fear.

Forgive me—I mean man, not God. Man must fear sin and must fear God. He must fear these above all else. If he fears God, then he also fears sin and avoids it. And if he fears sin, he fears it precisely because he fears God. The two are inseparably linked. No one can say that he fears God while not fearing sin.

Nor can we say that someone who fears sin is at the same time without the fear of God. No! The person who fears sin also fears God.

Beware of the person who does not fear God, for such a person does not fear sin either. And the person who does not fear sin does not fear God. He is godless and without the fear of God. Far from being ready to receive Holy Communion, he simply does whatever he pleases.

Therefore, a person must come with the fear of God and with true faith in the Mystery. “I believe, O Lord, and I confess that You are truly Christ, the Son of the living God, who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am first.” Each person must regard Christ in this way: as his own personal Savior.

True faith in the Mystery also means believing that this is the Body and Blood of Christ. If I draw near unworthily and without setting my life in order, I will be consumed. If I draw near worthily, having set my life in order, my sins will be consumed, and my soul will be filled with light.

True faith must also be joined with love; love is an indispensable companion. For it was God’s love for mankind that brought God down to earth so that He might raise man back up to Heaven. This love became incarnate and brought about our adoption as children of God.

Love, then, is an indispensable companion. This is why, as we have said many times throughout our discussion of the Divine Liturgy, there is so much reference to peace.

“For the peace from above,” “for the peace of the whole world,” “Peace be unto all,” and “Let us love one another”—all these are connected with love. And when love is absent... Love must extend in two directions: toward our fellow human beings and toward God.

A person in such a state must not approach Holy Communion. Many people approach Holy Communion while still carrying long-standing passions, deep hatreds, and many grave unresolved matters, simply because it is a feast—because it is Christmas, Pascha, or the Dormition fast in August.

Under no circumstances will Christ sanctify such a so-called believer if he has not yet made the sacrifice required in order to love. For love is born of sacrifice. It demands sacrifice; it demands blood. You must give up your ego, perhaps give up possessions, and surrender many things in order to attain what we might call this gracious greeting from God.

This is essential. No one should ever set out for Church or for Holy Communion—or even for prayer, another act of worship, a memorial service, a funeral, or Baptism—while enmity remains. After all, the purpose of all these things is that we should go and pray.

How can I pray when I am cut off from someone because of the hostility between us, whatever its cause may be? There is no room for that. So the third element is indispensable. Along with fear of God and the true faith, a person must also bring this third element: love.

He must hold these things in one hand, and with the other take hold of the communion cloth, open his mouth, and receive the true Love—the Love who unites him with God, brings him peace with God, and makes him God’s child by grace.

For all who receive Him—all who have received Christ in Baptism, in Holy Communion, and in faith—‘to them He gave the right to become children of God.’ Therefore, anyone who does not come bearing this threefold gift must understand that he is not participating in the Mystery rightly and does not receive the blessings that flow from it—the eighteen gifts which, according to Basil the Great, flow from Holy Communion.

He does not receive them. Instead, we make sure we meet other conditions before coming to Holy Communion: a little token fast—one day, or perhaps two or three—then washing, bathing, shaving, or perhaps saying rather harshly to someone, ‘Forgive me; I am going to receive Holy Communion.’ And that is all.

But we do not come with true metanoia and repentance, true faith, the blessing of our spiritual father, a conscience at peace, and our accounts properly settled with both our fellow human beings and God.

If only it were possible to examine those who will come to Holy Communion the day after tomorrow, on Christmas—those who join the line without any proper basis, as though they were going to a bakery to receive ordinary bread.

If I told you that, out of a thousand, nine hundred and fifty approach unworthily and receive Holy Communion to their condemnation, I would not be far from the truth—at least here in Athens.

Young men and women, gentlemen and ladies who have no connection with the Church and no desire to hear about Jesus, His life, and His Gospel, or to live His life, will nevertheless come forward to receive Holy Communion. That is why this fear of God is necessary when a person approaches.

This applies to every person who bears responsibility for himself. But there are also people who, in relation to Holy Communion, bear responsibility for others as well: the parents who bring their children.

Here we encounter matters that are neither discussed nor preached from the pulpit.

We see a mother bringing her child to receive Holy Communion. She even chooses particular days because of her superstitions—the feast of Saint Barbara, for example, Saint Marina, Saint Stylianos, or some other saint.

Mothers imagine that Holy Communion is somehow different on that particular day.

Let me take this opportunity to answer this briefly. The Saints differ among themselves in the grace they have received from God, according to their martyrdom and the boldness they possess before Him.

Holy Communion, however, is no different on any day—not even on Pascha.

I repeat: the Saints differ among themselves in the degree of boldness they have before the Lord. But Holy Communion never differs in any way. Whatever the day and whoever celebrates the Divine Liturgy, it is no different.

Whether it is celebrated by the most sinful priest in the world or by the holiest Saint, it is the very same Holy Communion.

That is one delusion. The second delusion is this: the mother herself is unfit to receive Holy Communion and therefore does not receive—apart from certain mothers who bring their child to receive Holy Communion and then, while still holding the child in one hand, immediately receive Holy Communion themselves.

Both the ram and the ewe receive Holy Communion.

Most mothers, however, bring the baby to receive Holy Communion, but they themselves do not receive. They think that the baby is receiving—but on the basis of whose faith does the baby receive?

The baby has neither fear of God, nor faith, nor love.

On the basis of whose faith, then, will the baby receive these gifts? How can God sanctify your child and preserve it for you? Or how can Saint Barbara, for example, or Saint Catherine do so, when, out of superstition, you bring the child to Church on the saint’s feast day to receive the blessing?

How is that possible? God does not hear sinners; but if anyone worships God and does His will, He hears that person. So we have many mothers and many parents who are guilty of mortal sin, yet come forward as though they were faithful.

But these poor little children receive on the basis of their parents’ faith.

They cannot make any confession of faith for themselves. The same thing happens in Baptism.

In Baptism, we baptize them and make the confession of faith on their behalf. Can an unbeliever go there and confess, saying on behalf of the child, “I renounce Satan,” when that person is himself an unbeliever?

You take a godmother dressed immodestly in trousers, and she goes there to say on behalf of the child, “I renounce Satan.” Whom are you going to renounce, when he is the one who has dressed you and brought you there looking like that? Renounce your own Satan first, and then you can renounce him on behalf of the child.

That is the proper order of things. This is why we see so many deplorable consequences and cannot explain them—so many strange things happening in homes, which you yourselves see but cannot understand. These are the reasons.

It is not enough, then, for me to have faith only for myself. If there is a little one whom I undertake to care for, I must also have faith on that child’s behalf. And in these situations there are so many other innocent creatures whom we have brought into this same condition and deprived of the grace of God.

Someone may ask me, “What does God do with them, then? Does He burn them up?” In His goodness, I want to believe that He does not burn them.

That is what I want to believe. I may be mistaken at this moment, but I want to believe that He does not burn them because of an unbelieving mother—a cruel mother—or a cruel, unbelieving, indifferent father, or whatever else he may be.

I believe He does not burn them, but neither does He give them what is received by the children of those mothers and fathers who truly believe, prepare themselves, prepare their children as well, teach them to fast, bring them to Holy Confession, and cultivate their spiritual life.

They care only about washing the children outwardly, or dressing them up according to worldly fashion, and taking them to Church. This is something I believe must be said. Anyone who assumes the responsibility of presenting either himself or someone else before the Holy Chalice must take these things very seriously. This is especially true on the great feast days.

And there is another great, satanic disorder.

You may see stillness and reverence among the congregation until the time for Holy Communion approaches. But when the moment comes for Holy Communion to be given, something strange will happen, either among the people or among the clergy.

Something will happen. Especially on days when there is a large crowd, when people come out of mere custom to receive Holy Communion, there is a great commotion. People push and crowd one another; some tell lies, others pretend to be ill; elderly people force their way in, and young people rush forward to seize it and receive.

Such noise and disorder arise—something that should never happen in a Church, where God Himself comes down, at that most awe-inspiring moment when man is united with his God. Yet it does happen.

Each of us has only one mouth, and all of us claim, in one way or another, to be faithful. We ought to be able to remain completely still, allow the person in front of us to move forward naturally, and then, when our turn comes, proceed in a calm and orderly line.

If we are women, we must not stand among the men. Under no circumstances—under no circumstances—should Christ ever see us approaching in such disorder. We must go to the women’s line, whether we are elderly or whatever our condition may be: to the women’s line.

As for the gentlemen, I have never seen them pushing into the men’s line. The women will do all these things! The men should come forward first, and then the ladies. If there are babies, they should be helped to receive and leave; then those who are ill and need assistance should rise and come forward. There is no reason to rush and shove them just to save two, three, or five minutes. They have spent an hour, an hour and a half, or two hours in Church, and those who helped bring them there should show a little patient endurance. They should not stir them up and push them forward. Nor should I be made to feel obliged to give up my place so that someone may receive first merely because she is an old woman, or he is an elderly man, and so forth. None of that matters; they can receive afterward. Let everyone proceed in good order, and then you can quietly receive Holy Communion, return, and sit in your place again.

This Jewish custom of...

There may be thousands who come for Holy Communion, but only dozens remain for the thanksgiving afterward. They receive through one door and go straight out through the other. Judas did the same thing, while they were still seated at the table and it was still laid. They had not risen, made the sign of the Cross, or given thanks.

But Satan is the instigator of this. A person’s angel does not drive him out of the Church; his devil drives him out. Take that from me and remember it.

When someone takes his child—or simply himself—and leaves the Church before the priest gives the dismissal, before he says, “Let us depart in peace,” he has not even heard the blessing of peace. Where are you going? Are you going into the hands of Satan? How can you leave like that?

You are playing the part of Judas, who left before hearing the sacred thanksgiving that was offered there.

The twenty-sixth chapter of Matthew. And as you can see, there are certain exceptional cases, so I do not wish to be absolute. There are cases involving children or babies whom their mothers cannot keep calm, and so they are compelled to take them into the narthex, or even outside. They can still hear. There are also other cases—for example, a mother may have left someone at home.

I understand that someone who is ill may have to leave, even if he can remain for only one, two, or five more minutes. But those are exceptional cases. Among a thousand people, nine hundred and ninety cannot all be exceptions of this kind.

It may be one, two, five, ten, or twenty people. But here it has become the rule. People simply leave the Church. Where, then, is their gratitude? They come, snatch the Bread, and leave. They do not remain to give thanks.

Without scolding anyone or creating unpleasant situations, we have a duty to show others, by our own conduct, what is right.

For our people are suffering from ignorance. These things are not being taught from the pulpit.

And you know that people today do not know these things, nor do they read books about them. They read other, unnecessary things. But they must learn what is essential for them: the deeper matters of the faith, the things that will save them. They have never passed through this world before. They will come only once to be judged; they will not return here to graduate from some school. So they absolutely must learn these things.

That is why we explain them at length and speak a little sternly, hoping that something will remain. We try to say them with an intensity of a hundred, hoping that perhaps two degrees of it will be put into practice—not ten, twenty, or thirty, but even two. For matters of faith are the hardest things to put into practice.

I have also held our priests responsible, because many of them do not receive Holy Communion at the invitation, “With fear of God.” They dismiss the crowds and receive afterward. This is inconsistent. The proper time for receiving the Holy Gifts is at “With fear of God.”

Indeed, in one province where I happened to be, I found an order from the bishop that the priests were to receive at the very end, so that the people could leave without becoming tired. In other words, those who wish to receive Holy Communion are punished, while those who do not wish to receive are shown favor.

For what purpose? So that they can leave quickly.

It is an unpleasant thing; it is not good. It is good for the faithful to receive Holy Communion with fear. If possible, when there are more than two priests and a deacon—and if there is a third priest as well—there should be a second and third Holy Chalice, so that everyone may be served more easily: two Chalices from the central door and one or even two more from the other two doors, so that this matter may be handled more efficiently. Yes. But meanwhile, those waiting to receive Holy Communion—small children, elderly men, old women, and the rest—are pushed aside and crowded together, while the others conspicuously come forward to take the antidoron, scatter crumbs from it over their bald heads as though fulfilling a vow, and then leave while talking ostentatiously. This is blasphemy, and one day Christ will demand an account of it.

Often, indeed, the antidoron is distributed from the Beautiful Gate while Christ is given from the north door over there. No! The Beautiful Gate is for Christ. The antidoron belongs to another category, and if it is not distributed, the world will not end. If it is not distributed, the world will not end. Besides, there are Canons of ecclesiastical law which say that those who are not in a state to receive Holy Communion are not entitled to receive antidoron either.

Those who have not received Holy Communion are entitled to take antidoron; and if the proper order were actually observed, then we could discuss the matter. Unfortunately, it is not observed, and the person who has not received Holy Communion is treated as though he were being punished. In the early Church, those who did not receive were disciplined and excommunicated, because everyone received Holy Communion.

Now, in a sense, those who do receive Holy Communion are the ones being excluded, while those who do not receive are left entirely free. That is why most laypeople find it strange when someone says that a person should struggle spiritually and come forward more frequently: that he should make some small effort, avoid certain things, eat less, stop running here and there, give up one habit and then another, restrain his flesh, and so be able to receive again sooner.

Then the questions begin: When did you eat? When did you sleep? Are you unmarried?—and so forth. They go so far as to examine the most intimate details. They find it strange that a person might come forward to receive Holy Communion more frequently. This is because people make up the rules for themselves.

There is a way for a person to live a better life, as the Church desires, and to come forward himself, so that at least every Sunday he does not miss receiving his God. But unfortunately, as I have said, our ignorance and indifference have brought us to such a state that the priest often comes out and does not have even one small child to receive Holy Communion.

I do not remember which hierarch it was—or rather, which Saint—who was celebrating the Divine Liturgy. He came out, and no one approached. No one was going to receive Holy Communion. “For whom, then, was Holy Communion prepared today?” He would not go back through the Royal Doors, hoping that someone might still come forward, because he could not justify returning without anyone having received.

How could he say, “Having rightly partaken”? How could he say, “We have seen the true light”? How could he say all the other things that followed, when they would simply be lies? So they went into the neighborhood, found a woman who had a very young baby, and brought the child to the church.

They gave Holy Communion to that child, and only then did the hierarch go back inside. Otherwise, he would have remained there at the Royal Doors for nearly two hours, waiting with the Holy Chalice for someone to come and receive Holy Communion.

I remember—we were discussing it one day with Prokopios himself, the Bishop of Kefallinia, though the name of that saintly man escapes me. Of course, these things seem strange to us, because we have never studied the matters of our faith.

We talk about fashions and things like that, but we do not discuss matters of faith. Recently, however, knowledge about this subject has begun to spread, and it is true that many people have begun to receive Holy Communion.

The priests, too, are becoming enlightened—at least those who study. Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite was among the first to write about frequent Holy Communion. Saint Macarius of Corinth also wrote about it.

Dialismas had written about it, and Makrakis had written about it. Many had written on the subject, and so in recent years this understanding has begun to spread. Another book has also recently appeared, besides the one we ourselves wrote, The Antidote to Death.

It concerns frequent Holy Communion. Another book, The Forgotten Treasure, truly comes from the Holy Mountain. It is a substantial book now in circulation, and we have it here as well. Thus knowledge has begun to increase. In his own way, the late Father Angelos was also in favor of frequent Holy Communion.

There were also certain places here in Athens where a person could go to receive Holy Communion—Father Jerome at the Church of the Ascension, for example. Yet even when this effort is made, people begin demanding mere formalities.

“What did you eat yesterday, and where did you throw away the chicken bone?” They ask you nothing else; they ask only about that—whether you ate oil yesterday or perhaps an egg. But what have you done with your life? Are you cultivating your soul? Have you made your confession? Do you believe? No one asks about these things.

In any case, the moment when we say, “With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near,” is the most moving moment of all. It is the moment for which a person prepares in order to come into communion with his God.

You understand what you do when you are going to visit a palace: you rehearse every posture, sometimes even in front of a mirror. How will you present yourself to His Majesty? How will you bow? What will you say? You assume different postures and rehearse them.

Now consider what you must do to present yourself before your God. The outcome will not simply be, “Go away; I will give you nothing.” The consequences may be the very opposite: either you will receive a hundredfold, or you will receive nothing and even suffer harm.

For Holy Communion is either for the remission of sins or unto eternal Hell, as we said when reading those beautiful prayers of preparation. In any case, the priest gives Holy Communion to the faithful. Those who were prepared and received then return to their places.

Then the priest, or the deacon holding the Chalice, offers a prayer to God and says, “Save Your people and bless Your inheritance.” And here a question arises.

Picture the priest, the bishop, or the deacon standing at the Holy Doors.

He has given Holy Communion to the people, and the deacon has drawn his orarion over his shoulder. He takes up the Holy Chalice and cries out to God, “Save Your people and bless Your inheritance.” But you have not received Holy Communion. Where are you, then? Tell me: who now constitutes that inheritance?

Does it include both those who received Holy Communion and those who did not, or only those who received? Only those who received. They came into communion with Christ. They became brothers and sisters of Christ and heirs of God. This is God’s inheritance. This little flock is the little vineyard. They remained on the vine and drew life from it; the others remained as dry branches.

We do not understand the words. “Save them,” he repeats. He is holding God in his hands and saying, “My God, save Your people, those who have come into communion with You, and bless these heirs.” As for the others, I do not know—let them make their own arrangements; let them take the antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after the Divine Liturgy, and save it until tomorrow, because they have been smoking since morning. Do you understand? It is a fearful and terrifying thing. We create our own Hell. God does not create it for us; we create it ourselves. It depends on us whether we pass over to the side that leads to salvation or remain on the side that does not.

We have found the true faith, worshipping the undivided Holy Trinity, for the Holy Trinity has saved us.

“We have seen the true Light.” “In Your light we shall see light.” We received light and saw light; we saw the true Light. “We have received the heavenly Spirit.” But if someone did not come into communion with Christ, where, tell me, did he receive the heavenly Spirit? He did not receive it. “We have found the true faith,” because through faith we came to Christ and were united with Him. “We worship the undivided Holy Trinity, for the Holy Trinity has saved us”—through the Second Person, our Lord Jesus Christ.

The deacon raises the Holy Gifts and says, “Exalt, Master.” He carries them into the sanctuary, and the priest, receiving them into his hands, says quietly, “Be exalted above the heavens, O God, and let Your glory be over all the earth.” These are the things I was speaking about—the parts that follow and are connected with the Ascension of the Lord.

The Lord ascends. And afterward He will come again, for that is what still remains. We know the events up to the Ascension. The words “and He shall come again” have not yet been fulfilled; they will be fulfilled.

Then we hear aloud outside the sanctuary, “Always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.” May He count us worthy always, now and throughout all ages, to do the same. Then comes the exhortation: “Stand upright. Having received the divine, holy, immaculate, immortal Mysteries of Christ…” Here the word “upright” has many meanings.

Clearly, he is calling everyone.

Rise. They were not kneeling; some were seated. If, for example, someone was in Hagia Sophia, he would have had to wait more than an hour for the distribution of Holy Communion to be completed, because more than twenty thousand people received from over a hundred Holy Chalices. So those who had received returned to their seats or stalls—the elderly men and women, the aged, the disabled, and others who had good reason—and sat reverently, following the receiving of the Holy Gifts. When it was finished, the call went out to everyone: “Rise, that we may give thanks; let those who have received stand upright.”

“Having been counted worthy to partake of the divine, holy, immaculate, immortal, heavenly, life-giving, and awesome Mysteries of Christ, let us thank the Lord.” Let us thank Him from our hearts. Gather your strength—even if you have to stand on one foot—so that we may thank God. But here I would like to mention something we see every day in Church: we fail to exercise discernment, especially some elderly people.

You have noticed that the Polychronion is connected with the hymn to the Holy Trinity. At the same time that we sing “Holy God,” the Polychronion follows. Yet we see people rise for the Polychronion even though they remain seated while “Holy God” is being chanted.

When will these people finally learn? If they cannot remain standing for both, they should sit during the Polychronion and stand for “Holy God.” When will they learn this? Otherwise, it means that they fear the king more than they fear God. Are you afraid that people will call you a leftist or a communist if you do not stand when the king is mentioned? You are elderly and were sitting while “Holy God” was being chanted, yet now you stand for the king! Either sit for both, or sit during the Polychronion and stand for “Holy God.”

I am not telling you to sit during either one. But if your strength fails you—you are human, after all—measure your strength and sit when necessary. Stand for “Holy God,” and then sit during the Polychronion. Exercise discernment. When will you learn this, old man?

And this still happens now, in the twentieth century. That is why the deacon says, “Stand up, so that we may thank God.” Stand up! He is telling you plainly to stand there and thank Him upright: “Having received the divine, holy, immaculate, immortal, heavenly, life-giving and dread Mysteries of Christ, let us worthily thank the Lord.”

“Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and preserve us, O God, by Your grace,” and so forth. Once again, the deacon does not neglect to exhort and remind the people: now that you have received Holy Communion and carry Christ with you, take care that the whole day may be perfect, holy, peaceful, and sinless.

“Having asked”—let us ask that it may be perfect, holy, peaceful, and sinless. And not only that: “Let us commend ourselves and one another and our whole life unto Christ our God.” We are to entrust our whole life to Christ. We are making a confession of faith. Unfortunately, even we do not promise Him this as fully as we should.

The choir responds, “To You, O Lord”—yes, we entrust it to You. The priest then says a prayer to Christ in a low voice: “We thank You, O Master and Lover of mankind, Benefactor of our souls, for on this present day You have counted us worthy of Your heavenly and immortal Mysteries.”

He gives thanks on behalf of himself and of the people whom he represents at that moment, because God has counted worthy both us and those standing outside the sanctuary to receive this heavenly, immortal food. It is a great thing for a human being to enter into communion with his God.

“Make straight our path.” Give us direction; set us upon the right road. “Make straight our path. Establish us all in the fear of You.” Strengthen us in the fear of You as well. I will not do this, because God does not will it—for the reason we explained earlier. We have already said what the fear of God means.

“Guard our life.” And it is true that God must guard a person’s life—and He does guard it when that person entrusts it to Him.

“Make firm our steps,” not by our own strength, but “through the prayers and supplications of the glorious Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, and of all the Saints, for You are our sanctification.” Unless You sanctify us, we cannot make ourselves holy. And to You we send up glory—to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and always and unto the endless ages. Amen. Here the command is given: “Let us depart in peace.” Here is the blessing: “Let us depart in peace.” In the Liturgy of Saint James, in the Church, the service ended at this point. The deacon came out and said, “Let us depart in peace.” That was all. No antidoron, nothing else. If you ever happen to attend when they do it properly, instead of following their own customs, those who have received Holy Communion leave sooner because they have received. Those who have not received, however, remain there waiting to receive antidoron.

And the door will close with a thud, and he will receive nothing. Then you will understand and say, “What have I been doing here all this time? Why did I come?” Then you will feel the emptiness. Then you will realize that you must prepare yourself to go to Church for the Gift, rather than merely waiting for the antidoron.

Then you will understand it. For now, this antidoron deceives us into thinking that we have done something. It deceives us.

“Let us depart in peace.” That is it; the road is open, and the service is finished. There is nothing else. In the early Church there was no antidoron. The antidoron appeared later, and we turned it into a dogma. As half-communicants, we concealed the Holy Chalice and brought forward antidoron with holy water instead. We hid the Holy Chalice and became worse than the Pharisees. “Blind Pharisee,” He says, “which is greater: the gift, or that which sanctifies the gift?” Which, then, is greater? Once again the people are called: “Let us pray to the Lord.” The reader responds, “Lord have mercy,” and the priest says the prayer beginning, “O Lord, who blesses those who bless You,” and so forth. This is called the Prayer Behind the Ambon, because it was once said behind the ambon.

In the early Church, the ambon was not located where it is today.

Those of you who have visited Kalabaka will know that high above the town there is a church of the Most Holy Theotokos dating from before the seventh century. There you will find the ambon in the middle of the church. The priest would go to the ambon and, standing below it at the rear, read this prayer.

The deacon stood at the front, at the edge of the solea, with his head bowed, and listened as this prayer—called the Prayer Behind the Ambon—was read. It is called that because it was offered behind that ambon. Later, ambos were moved to various locations. In some churches they are still used, while in others they are not used at all, as you know, because in many churches today no homily is preached. This prayer was read there.

It says here: “O Lord, who blesses those who bless You and sanctifies those who trust in You, save Your people and bless Your inheritance.” But something else comes before this. There is an exchange between the chanter and the clergy.

The chanter says, “Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Holy Father, bless.” Yet the priest does not give the blessing himself; he turns to Christ. Although the people, represented by the choir and the chanter, give the priest the word to bless, he does not bless on his own authority. They say, “Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Holy Father, bless.” But the priest turns to Christ and says, “O Lord, who blessest those who bless Thee.” In other words: It is not I; may You give the blessing.

How beautiful that is! Therefore, whoever may be serving the Divine Liturgy in an Orthodox church, and however sinful he may be, never leave the Church on his account. It is not he who bestows the blessing. Another stands behind him and acts through him in the Church.

A Roman Catholic priest says, “I bless you; I crown you; I baptize you; I hear your confession.” The Orthodox priest does not speak this way. He says, “O Lord, who blessest those who bless Thee.” You, O Lord, bless those who put their trust in You—not I, the sinful priest.

You, O Lord, baptize. “The servant of God is baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”—not, “I baptize you.” “The servant of God is crowned in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

O Lord, who said, “Whatever you bind shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed,” loose also this servant of Yours—not, “I forgive you.”

Do you understand how beautifully Orthodoxy has arranged all this, and how mistaken are those who keep away because the priest did this or the priest went astray, and so forth? He is human. Have you ever prayed that God would sustain and illumine him, or have you driven him still farther down with your tongue?

But even if he is sinful, do not be afraid. It is not he; Another stands behind him. “O Lord, who blessest those who bless Thee and sanctifiest those who put their trust in Thee”—those who believe in You. “Save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance.”

Those who eat His flesh and drink His blood become His heirs. They become joint heirs with Christ, heirs together in God. The inheritance belongs to God, and Christ is the natural Heir.

Through Holy Communion and Baptism, we become brothers and sisters of Christ and, by grace, children of God. Thus we become joint heirs with Christ. “Preserve the fullness of Thy Church.” The fullness of the Church!

Anyone who does not receive Holy Communion is not part of the fullness of the Church. He has cut himself off; he does not remain on the vine. He is not within the fullness of the Church, and the Lord does not preserve him. He is left guarding only his own pride—or Satan guards him with his own shepherd’s crook, through that man’s sins.

“Preserve the fullness of Thy Church. Sanctify those who love the beauty of Thy house”—of Your twofold house. For this does not refer only to the church building. Above all, it refers to this house within us. Christ first dwells here, within us, and only then in temples made by human hands.

First there must be cleansing here and beauty here within us; then Christ dwells there.

Is there beauty within when someone may love to clean the oil lamps and candle stands, yet at the same time has gone twenty or thirty years without receiving Holy Communion or going to Holy Confession? What good comes of that? May God bless him—yes, may God bless him.

“Glorify them in return by Thy divine power.” They glorify You through their good works, and by their lives they give others cause to glorify You. Therefore, glorify them in return by Your great power, and do not forsake us who hope in You.

“Grant peace to Thy world.” Peace is neither sold nor bought; it is given as a gift by God. That is why, whenever the Church opens her lips in prayer, peace comes first: “For the peace from above, let us pray to the Lord; for the peace of the whole world…” Again and again, the Church prays for peace.

She prays for Your Church, the priesthood, our rulers, the armed forces, and all Your people. See how this prayer asks Christ to bring peace to the whole world around us and to preserve it. “For every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from Thee, the Father of lights.”

This is taken, as you know, from the catholic epistle of James, the brother of the Lord. Everything good is Yours. Consequently, we must ask it of You—for ourselves, for our people, for our Church, for our armed forces, for our rulers and all who govern us, and for everyone.

“To the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.” The prayer concludes by invoking the one Godhead in three hypostases, or persons. Then, as a fitting response, those beautiful words of Job are brought forth: “Blessed be the name of the Lord, from henceforth and forevermore.”

We chant this three times: “Blessed be the name of the Lord.” These are the words Job first spoke when his wife was urging him to blaspheme God, while he continued to bless God. After this has been chanted three times, the prayer concerning the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets is read.

The Divine Liturgy now draws to its close, for Christ came and fulfilled both the Law and the Prophets: “O Christ our God, who art Thyself the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets, who didst fulfill all the dispensation of the Father, fill our hearts with joy and gladness, always, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.” The priest and the deacon come out, and the priest turns toward the people and gives the blessing: “The blessing of the Lord and His mercy come upon you, through His divine grace and love for mankind, always, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.”

At this point—and not before—the antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after the Divine Liturgy, is blessed, with the words, “The blessing of the Lord and His mercy be upon you.” It is wrong to bless the antidoron where it is commonly blessed now and to distribute it there at that moment, from one side and the other, and so forth.

That is wrong. It has no place there. Unfortunately, this practice has become established. And often it is not even placed in the people’s hands by the priest. It is distributed on the Holy Altar; they kiss the altar cloth and take it. They do not kiss the priest’s hand as they receive it.

They have come to regard the altar cloth as being above the hand of the priest who celebrates the Divine Liturgy. No—the priest’s hand is above the cloth of the Holy Altar. At this point, when the antidoron is distributed, the diptychs containing the names of the departed are read.

We will have much to answer for before our departed, because many diptychs are not read at that time. Nor should the antidoron be taken to the candle stand. Yet every sly operator goes off to the chapels, takes antidoron, and distributes it simply to send the people away.

No! This is the moment when the antidoron is blessed. Once I saw an archimandrite, and my soul rejoiced. They brought him the antidoron before the proper time, but he would not touch it. I said, “Glory to God.”

I saw him at the dependency of Saint Catherine’s Monastery of Mount Sinai. At this very point in the service, I saw him signal to the young attendant, “Bring the tray.” Then, precisely as he said, “The blessing of the Lord and His mercy,” he took the tray and blessed it.

Then he distributed the antidoron. This is the proper time for the antidoron, and we should receive it from the priest’s hand, not take it from the candle stand. The priest’s hand is blessed: it has divided the Lord’s Body. And as I told you earlier, at the beginning, if the right hand of the Forerunner, which touched the Lord’s head, remains incorrupt to this day at the Holy Monastery of Dionysiou on the Holy Mountain, then what are we to say of the hand of a priest? Yet many disdain it and will not receive the antidoron from the priest’s hand. Instead, they take it from the candle stand or receive it by various other means, and so forth.

In the end, the priest offers this lengthy concluding prayer, glorifies God, invokes all the Saints and the Saint of the day, gives thanks, and closes with the words, “Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers.” That, more or less, covers the matters surrounding the Divine Liturgy.

Tonight’s talk is the twenty-sixth talk on the Divine Liturgy. According to others, it is the twenty-seventh; perhaps it is. From my notes, I see it as the twenty-sixth. Some people here have told me that when I resumed the series, I left out one section. I will look into it. If I have indeed omitted it, we will return to that section and discuss it; it amounts to one or two talks. Our purpose was simply to say a few words, not to offer a full interpretation. We have neither the ability nor the knowledge to interpret what the Holy Spirit has placed within the Church.

Our purpose was simply to awaken interest. And I hope that God and the Saints who composed all these things will bless us and have mercy on us. But we too must desire to do our part, so that we may be edified by the Divine Liturgy. This is what I pray for one another and for everyone. Amen.

Οι περισσότερες όμως κοινωνούν το μωρό και δεν κοινωνούν αυτές. Έχουν τη γνώμη ότι το μωρό κοινωνεί. Και βάσει ποιας πίστεως κοινωνεί το μωρό;

Βάσει ποιας πίστεως θα πάρει αυτά; Πώς είναι δυνατόν ο Θεός να στο αγιάζει αυτό και να στο φυλάει; Ή η Αγία Βαρβάρα Φερυπίνη ή η Αγία Εκατερίνη που εκ προλήψεως την ημέρα της εορτής το πηγαίνεις στην εκκλησία για να πάρεις τον αγιασμό;

Ο άνθρωπος που παίρνει ή το παιδί του ή τον εαυτό του και φεύγει από την εκκλησία, πριν ο ιερές πει το διευχών, πριν πει εν ειρήνη προέλθομαι, γιατί δεν άκουσες την ευλογία εν ειρήνη, πού πας. Πού πας, στα χέρια του σατανά; Πώς φεύγεις;

Εκοινώνησε τον λαόν, γύρισε το Ωράριον επάνω. Το πιάνει το Άγιο Ποτήριο και φωνάζει στον Θεό και του λέγει: «Σῶσον τὸν λαόν σου καὶ εὐλόγησον τὴν κληρονομίαν σου». Και εσύ δεν έχεις κοινωνήσει. Πού είσαι, πες μου; Ποια είναι η κληρονομία τώρα;

Εγώ δεν σου λέω να καθίσεις ούτε στο ένα ούτε στο άλλο, αλλά όμως, άμα η δύναμή σου — άνθρωπος είσαι — ζύγισε τη δύναμή σου και να καθίσεις· στο «Άγιος ο Θεός» όρθιος. Και να καθίσεις έπειτα στο Πολυχρόνιο. Κάνε διάκριση. Πότε θα το μάθεις, γέρος;

Καταλάβατε πόσο τα έχει ωραία η Ορθοδοξία και πόσο άδικο έχουν αυτοί που κάθονται μακριά, γιατί δούλευε ο παπάς, τραγοπάτησε και λοιπά. Άνθρωπος είναι. Προσευχήθηκες ποτέ γι' αυτόν εσύ, να τον κρατήσει ο Θεός και να τον φωτίσει, ή τον έσπρωξες περισσότερο με τη γλώσσα σου;
