Summary

The lecture explains the prayers said as the clergy receive Holy Communion, presenting the consecrated Gifts as the true Body and Blood of Christ, a burning coal that cleanses those who approach with repentance but brings judgment when received carelessly. Communion nourishes and illumines the whole person and leads toward theosis, yet no one approaches on the strength of personal worthiness; the celebrant asks that the Gifts become cleansing, sanctification, and a pledge of the Kingdom. True preparation also requires faith, forgiveness, peace, and sacrificial love toward God and neighbor, so longstanding hostility must be healed before participation in worship and the Eucharist.

You will remember that we are at the point where the clergy prepare to receive Holy Communion within the sanctuary. We have been saying a few things about the Divine Liturgy, to give some idea of what takes place in there, because many of us do not know exactly what happens, as we have said before.

For if we knew, our manner and our attitude toward this Divine Liturgy would be different. I am speaking now specifically about the words: “It is deifying Blood; tremble, O man, as you behold it.” These words are said by the priest or bishop, and also by the deacon, as he has before him the Lord Himself upon the holy diskos, and His very Blood within the holy chalice. Speaking to himself, but also to others, he says: “This is deifying Blood; tremble, O man, as you behold it, for it is a burning coal that consumes the unworthy.”

One can connect this with the burning coal of Isaiah. That is where this prayer was taken from and composed, in the sixth chapter. We spoke of it earlier, when we discussed the words, “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord of Sabaoth.”

There, the burning coal was taken from the altar, and it cleansed Isaiah’s unclean lips. We shall encounter the words that follow later on: “For it is a burning coal that consumes the unworthy.” And as we said, the person who prepares to receive this burning coal—Jesus—is not consumed; rather, his sins are consumed.

But if he does not prepare properly, through metanoia, that is, repentance, through right faith, and through all the other things that are necessary, then he himself will be consumed. It is not a matter of saying, “I am unprepared, so I gain nothing, but I lose nothing either.” Paul disagrees in his Epistle to the Corinthians. He says clearly that if you do not discern the Body and Blood of the Lord, you too receive unworthily. For the uninitiated and the drunken, this burning coal has the opposite effect.

Here the celebrant exhorts himself, and every person who will approach this mystical supper to receive from the burning coal so that his unclean lips may be cleansed. This Blood is deifying; it is not ordinary blood, nor the blood of goats and calves.

It is the Blood of God. And this burning coal consumes the unworthy. “This is the Body of God: it both deifies me and nourishes me.” It nourishes the person who receives it, and brings the person who receives it to theosis, to participation in divine life.

“It deifies the spirit and, in a wondrous manner, nourishes the nous,” the spiritual intellect. In a mystical way it nourishes, illumines, and enlightens the person. This happens in a sacred and hidden manner; he does not know how. A person must keep these things in mind.

These words are said within the sanctuary. We ourselves should already have said them in our own service of preparation. Many people follow the good order of reading part of it in the evening, as appointed with Compline, and part in the morning, as appointed with Matins. In this way, they have already said these things.

There are, of course, also certain prayers to be said immediately before receiving the Holy Gifts.

Some say these prayers at home, or right there at that moment; indeed, some have learned them by heart and recite them. It is good not to recite them mechanically, like parrots, but to pay attention and reflect on what they are saying. Then they feel greater compunction, they understand more clearly what it is that they are approaching, and in this way they can be more greatly edified.

One must approach Holy Communion recollected and restrained, not with bold self-confidence. Although our Lord gives us confidence, we must not presume upon it. He makes us holy in Baptism, and through metanoia, that is, repentance, and Holy Confession, He cleanses whatever stain may have soiled that holiness.

Nevertheless, because He possesses holiness by nature, while we possess it by grace, it is fitting for us to say to Him: “One is Holy, One is Lord, Jesus Christ.” And as we said, you saw how even the deacon, who has taken part in this awesome sacrifice, folds his wings, so to speak.

You saw that while the Lord’s Prayer is being said outside, he gathers up his orarion and draws himself inward, preparing to enter the sanctuary. With attentiveness, awe, and the fear of God, he approaches to partake of these divine Mysteries.

In the same way, every person must possess the fear of God—a real fear of God—and understand that what lies there is not simply bread and wine. Within the bread and the wine are the very Body of the Lord and the very Blood of the Lord.

Then there is another beautiful, poetic expression: “You have captivated me with longing, O Christ, and transformed me by Your divine love.” Most of us have never experienced this divine longing. Those who feel such love, such ardent longing for Christ, can be counted on one hand.

We experience unlawful desire; indeed, we pine away over worldly and carnal matters, false ideologies, and so forth. But we do not possess such longing for Christ. I remember one such case. I was counted worthy to meet a soul who possessed divine love for Christ.

She was a nun whom God first guided into my path when I returned to Christ in 1951. This nun gave me my first Kyriakodromion—the collection of readings for the Sundays—by Voulgaris; by Theotokis, rather, forgive me, by Theotokis.

It contained the Gospel readings. From then on I continued to see her, because she would always come and ask me to return it, and I would not give it back. I could neither find another copy nor afford to buy one. This gave me the opportunity to come to know her closely.

Whenever she uttered the word “Christ,” her eyes did not merely shine; streams of tears immediately poured from them and ran down toward her breast. It was as though someone within her had opened a fountain. I had never seen anything like it before, nor have I seen it since.

I did, of course, also see Father Jerome of Aegina, who fell asleep in the Lord there. Whenever the name “Christ” passed his lips, you could see his eyes fill with tears, and he would stop speaking. We do not possess these things.

Our relationship with Christ is more like kinship, friendship, or even a business arrangement. We do certain things for Him so that we may receive certain things in return. We even weigh the accounts to see whether we have perhaps given Him a little more, so that we can make Him take care of us. That is more or less how we behave. But this is not divine love; we do not possess that love.

That is why we set limits and deadlines on everything; we measure everything by time and calculation. But when a person falls in love with Christ, everything changes. Neither height nor depth nor fire—nothing at all—can hold him back.

And this is a special gift that is bestowed upon a person. He cannot buy it; it is not sold in the marketplace. A person must prepare himself, but the gift must still be given to him. Many people have prepared themselves, yet it was not given to them.

There have been people who, simply to behold the glory of the Most Holy Theotokos, were willing even to lose an eye—to have one eye taken from them—if only they might see a little of her glory. And if the moon possesses such glory, imagine the Sun! If she who shines with reflected light is so glorious, what must the true Light Himself be—the Sun of Righteousness?

So this person agreed to lose an eye, and when he beheld her, he is said to have cried out, ‘Let me see her once more, even if they take my other eye as well!’ The Most Holy Theotokos consented, and he saw her once again in her glory. He also regained sight in the eye he had previously lost, because she had seen his sacrifice.

We, of course, have nothing like this; such divine love does not exist in us. That is why we ask, ‘Has the third bell rung?’ If the third bell has not rung, why is the priest starting? We will go and give him a piece of our mind! We imagine that the services are held for the priests, the chanters, the angels, or perhaps even for Christ—but not for us. So this divine love is absent.

But here the prayer says, ‘You have drawn me with longing, O Christ, and transformed me by Your divine love. Burn away my sins with immaterial fire.’ For no one knows how sins are burned away—no one.

The evil one knows only the account books in which he had recorded them. But once a person has come to metanoia, made his confession, and received Holy Communion, the pages are now blank. The evil one does not know how this happened, and that is what troubles him. He can see that the sins are gone, but he does not know how they were erased.

That swindler knows they have been erased, but even he does not know how. It is a Mystery how the Lord blots out sins and justifies the ungodly, to use the Apostle Paul’s expression in Romans.

‘Burn away my sins with immaterial fire, and count me worthy to be filled with the delight that is in You.’ Count me worthy to be satisfied and to feast—not merely to receive some small thing, some morsel, but to sit down, be filled, and find complete satisfaction in every way.

‘So that, leaping for joy, I may magnify both of Your comings, O Good One.’ He is speaking here of two comings: the one that has already taken place and for which He counted us worthy, and another that is still to come. We come into contact with the first through Baptism. When we are baptized, the Lord’s first coming is glorified, because Christ, by coming among us, gave us the opportunity to become His children once again and to enjoy this adoption as sons.

Now, if we remain close to Christ, delighting in His Mysteries and, in general, in everything offered to us by Christ’s Orthodox Church—this inn—then we shall be counted worthy to leap for joy at His other coming as well.

The first has taken place; the other has not yet occurred. So the prayer says, ‘We thank You for counting us worthy. Leaping for joy, we shall magnify both of Your comings, O Good One.’ But those who do not prepare themselves, beginning with Baptism, do not receive Him. They will rejoice neither in the first coming nor in the Second Coming.

The prayer then presents another scene that once again humbles a person, bringing him as low as possible so that he may be able to approach.

‘In the splendor of Your saints, how shall I, the unworthy one, enter?’

So, how shall I, the unworthy one, enter into this splendor of the Saints? How shall I come? This scene is taken from the twenty-second chapter of Matthew. That is where we find it. It is an awe-inspiring scene, and in some measure it represents our own condition. It says there that a banquet was held, and many were present, both evil and good. When a king held a wedding feast for his son, the king came in, the Gospel says, to look upon the guests and see who was inside.

He did not go to the wicked or to any of the others. He went directly to one table—to a certain seat, let us say; I do not know exactly where—where one man was trying to hide. And he immediately asked him, ‘Friend, how did you enter here without a wedding garment? How did you come in here? How did you dare to appear here without a wedding garment?’

The man, the Gospel says, was speechless. He offered no excuse whatsoever.

This proves that excuses belong only to this world: ‘You know, Father, it was my husband’; ‘You know, it was my wife’; ‘You know, it was this’; ‘You know, it was something else.’ There will be none of that there. There we shall raise our hands and go by ourselves into Hell, saying only, ‘You are righteous, O Lord.’ Nothing else. There will be no excuse. That is what it means when the Gospel says, ‘He was speechless.’ The king then continues by giving an order to the angels.

‘Seize him, bind him, and cast him out, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ The man had come so far that he was already inside, yet from there the king called him to account and cast him out again: ‘Friend, how did you enter here?’ It was because he lacked the wedding garment, of which the Church speaks to us during Holy Week.

And the garment—

You are not even wearing this garment.

does it cost you much? Why does he not have it? Are the materials lacking? How much does this garment cost you?

Your wardrobe may contain one, two, three, five, ten, or fifteen suits. You paid for them, though you may still owe money on some of them, and the installment collector may even be chasing after you because you have not brought him the payments. Yet compared with all those suits, even if they stripped you bare, if you died owning only the one suit for your funeral, that would be enough.

He will be stripped bare, because when a person leaves the road of virtue for the paths of sin, an angel of the Lord takes away his white robe, his baptismal garment, and he wanders naked and exposed through the ravines of sin. Whoever he may be, whatever office he may hold, political or ecclesiastical, if he sins or goes astray for one reason or another, he is naked and exposed. He needs the repentance of the prodigal: he must return and cry out, “I have sinned,” so that the command may be given to restore to him the first robe. This is the secret.

Here, then, it says: “In the brightness of Your Saints, how shall I, who am unworthy, enter?” How shall I enter?

Go to Holy Confession and cleanse your robe. You take your suit to be cleaned two, three, or even five times a week, depending on how dirty it becomes. Why, then, are you indifferent to the garment of your soul? There is a way to cleanse it; it is simply that you do not want to. There are beautiful symbols and images of this. Even our burial shroud is such a garment. Some people bring theirs back from the Holy Land.

We see the same thing with pilgrimages to the Holy Land: people became pilgrims without becoming Christians—that is, without living a Christian life. What good is it that they became pilgrims? What did they gain there? It is certainly good to bring something back from the Holy Land; that is good and holy. But what gives meaning and value to all these material things from those holy places is the Christian life—and that life is lacking in many. Their speech says exactly the opposite; their flesh proves exactly the opposite; their conduct, their dealings, and many things, old and new, prove exactly the opposite.

In their actions, they prove to be exactly the opposite. Their conduct, their dealings, and many things, both old and new, prove exactly the opposite. Neither cassocks from the Patriarchate nor the certificates of absolution they gave us there—saying that we had been forgiven because the Patriarch had read the prayer over us—will save us. Nothing of this kind will save us. It is as our Holy Church says on the Sunday of Cheesefare.

Adam failed to honor the divine-woven robe of Paradise, and wretchedly lost it through transgression. When he was found naked, he was clothed in garments of skin. This points us to what is given to us in Baptism: “As many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” That is why we have the white garments, and why the priest blesses and places the baptismal garment upon the infant or the adult. These show that we are joined again to Christ, restored to the first state of Adam and Eve, and given grace.

But if we sin, grace departs again, and once more we lose that garment. This robe is therefore indispensable. And if both clergy and people are to sit at the table of Holy Communion wearing it, we must first pass through confession.

There, through the keeper of the inn, the command is given that the first robe be restored. It is deeply grievous for us prodigals, us sinners, newly arrived in the clothing of the marketplace and of sin, to approach and sit at the mystical supper, where the fatted calf is set before us: “Delight in it, all of you.”

First we must change our clothes. We must take off the clothing of the pigsty and put on the first robe; only then shall we sit at the table. Then the calf will be slain; then we shall have the right to partake of the Body and Blood of Christ.

The parable of the Prodigal Son shows vividly exactly how a person must approach if he does not wish to be condemned—if Holy Communion is to be for him not eternal Hell, but eternal life. At that moment, then, the hymnographer sees this whole condition and says: “In the brightness of Your Saints, O Lord, how shall I, who am unworthy, enter? For if I dare to enter the bridal chamber, my garment will accuse me, for it is not a wedding garment; and I shall be bound and cast out by the angels.” What wedding does he mean here? Who is the Bridegroom, and who is the bride?

The Bridegroom is Christ, and the bride is the soul of each person. Let us not be deceived. This is the heavenly wedding, and it brings joy to those who have prepared themselves to be betrothed and who live with honor and purity, so that they may receive the marriage of the Lamb on the day appointed by Christ.

“O Lord, cleanse the defilement of my soul, and save me”—not because of my righteousness, but because You love mankind.

If you wish to travel a great distance by a short road to Paradise, never speak of the works you have done.

I know many souls who enumerate their good works even in confession. There are even those unfortunate people who write them down and set them against their sins. Never speak of your works; never put anything of your own forward. Always hide behind the Lord’s compassion, behind the Lord’s love for mankind.

As Isaiah says, our righteousness is like a filthy rag.

Whatever we do is not pure and unmixed; it contains self-interest, personal advantage, and calculation. Let a person examine himself—but does he possess the measure by which to judge? Where is the proper, unerring scale with which he can weigh things as he should and see which way the balance will tip or lean? How can he see it? He cannot.

A mother weighs up her daughter, though the daughter is living in fornication, and says, “If only you had a daughter like mine!”

What is she congratulating them for? “If only you too had children like these!” A wife praises her husband, a mother her child, a brother his brother, and so on. Often we praise them mistakenly. We do not know. Therefore, a person must not present himself before God with his works.

Leave your works over there to one side. Leave your suitcases with some porter to watch them, and go and get your tickets for the journey; then you can collect your suitcases.

For possessing suitcases—that is, good works—does not enable you to travel. No traveler ever made a journey merely because he had luggage. People without luggage who had obtained their tickets traveled; people with luggage who had not obtained their tickets did not travel. What do you say? Is that so, or is it not?

How many good works did the elder brother of the Prodigal Son have? Yet he remained outside. Do you understand? Things are reversed there. Satan deceives us. Whatever we may do, we must say that we are unworthy servants, and that we have done nothing more than what we were obliged to do.

That is why no good work we have done can ever cover some evil we have committed. Evil deeds are punished and good deeds are rewarded. That is the order Christ has established. And this is why people who have even one unrepented sin may be lost: they thought they could cover it with a whole series of other great and good works they had done.

The evil one deceived them. They could have found all those good deeds awaiting them in eternity—transformed from temporary things into eternal ones, and from material things into spiritual ones—if only they had also put that sin in order and had not allowed it to stand as an obstacle to their journey.

Let me repeat the prayer in full: “In the splendor of Thy saints, how shall I, who am unworthy, enter? For if I dare to enter the bridal chamber, my garment will condemn me, for it is not a wedding garment; and I shall be bound and cast out by the angels. Cleanse, O Lord, the filth of my soul, and save me, for Thou art the Lover of mankind.”

At this point I remember a revelation received by a holy soul, who once confided the following to me during a spiritual conversation. She said, “Forgive me, Dimitri, but let me tell you something. It was Great and Holy Thursday, and I found myself beside the right chanter’s stand. There were so many people that I could not manage to reach Holy Communion. I said, ‘I will remain here even if evening comes; I will not leave.’”

“So I remained there, thinking and saying, ‘My God, all these people are approaching little by little. The lines never empty; they move forward and fill up again. Are they all properly prepared? If they are not, have mercy on them; do not burn them up.’”

And what do you think she saw? The priest would take the Body of the Lord with the holy spoon to give it to those approaching, but an angel would take it from the spoon and place it back inside, so that the person received nothing.

She said that this did not happen to five people out of a hundred; it happened to ninety-five. Strange things. Is it true? I am not telling you that it is true, so do not rely upon it. I merely heard it. But because the prayer here speaks of angels—“I shall be bound and cast out by the angels”—we should understand that a person is not alone at that moment. It is not the priest who guards the Holy Gifts, for the priest himself is often irreverent; nor is it the deacon.

Nor are they guarded by the chanter, who has eaten his breakfast and then come to church. No. Angels and archangels are present. And if you read the revelations of John Chrysostom about what takes place inside the Church—from the moment the priest begins in the morning with “Blessed is our God” until he says the final dismissal after Holy Communion—you will tremble.

You may even be afraid to go to church because of what takes place there, with all the angels and archangels who are present. We have printed this revelation in a small booklet entitled, “For Laypeople and Clergy Who Behave Irreverently during the Divine Liturgy.”

What things take place in there! He had ordered that the revelation should neither be written down nor made public before his death. Afterward, however, it was recorded, and so we now possess it. What that man used to behold within the Church! Let us not imagine that we are there by ourselves.

We are not alone there—no. Angels and archangels minister, and woe to us. They have compassion on us and desire our salvation; otherwise, we might suffer harm, as often happened in the early Church, when Christianity was striving to prevail through many miracles.

In any case, there follows another beautiful prayer, again addressed to Christ: “O Master, Lover of mankind, Lord Jesus Christ my God”—my God personally, the God of each one of us personally—“let not these Holy Gifts be to my judgment.” These are awe-inspiring things. What we are about to approach is no ordinary matter.

“Let not these Holy Gifts be to my judgment because of my unworthiness.” A person may have prepared himself. He may have repented and made Holy Confession. He may have been reconciled with everyone. But even then—

—he does not presume that everything is in order. He does not approach trusting in his own worthiness. “Let them not be to my judgment because I am unworthy, but for the cleansing and sanctification of soul and body. This is why I entreat Thee, and as a pledge of the life and Kingdom to come.”

A pledge of the life and Kingdom to come. “For it is good for me to cleave unto God and to place in the Lord the hope of my salvation.” It is good for me to have a place with my God, and indeed such a living bond with Him.

Where else can I lean? To whom else can I turn, and from whom else can I expect help? I can only be benefited by having such a close relationship with God. And when the priest finishes these three beautiful, concise, and understandable prayers, he says again: “Of Thy Mystical Supper, O Son of God, accept me today as a communicant; for I will not speak of the Mystery to Thine enemies, neither like Judas will I give Thee a kiss; but like the thief will I confess Thee: Remember me, O Lord, in Thy Kingdom.”

He now turns to the deacon, because the deacon is also present and waiting. This is the exchange between them before each approaches in turn. The priest says to him, “Brother and fellow minister, forgive me, the unworthy priest.”

Even at the final moment before approaching, he asks forgiveness. For if a person has not put these matters in order, he cannot approach. “Let us love one another, that with one mind we may confess.” A person cannot remain bound by conflicts, enmities, and all manner of grievances for various reasons.

He cannot approach Christ. Therefore, the priest asks forgiveness even from the deacon. Then, in order to receive Holy Communion, the priest takes a portion from the artos—the blessed Bread—which he has divided, and says, “Behold, I draw near unto Christ, our immortal King and God.” He does not approach mere antitypes—outward figures or symbols—as Jehovah’s Witnesses claim.

I draw near to Christ, our immortal King and God. It is to Him that I draw near. He is here now.

Then he continues, saying, “Imparted unto me.” He now takes the portion from the Lamb that was divided, as we explained the other day, and says his own name—for example, Constantine—the unworthy priest, or hieromonk. He himself takes the precious Body as it is imparted to him.

The priest and the bishop are the only ones who receive Holy Communion by their own hand. The deacon receives from the bishop or priest, as do the subdeacon and all the others. In an emergency, even a layman may be appointed to open the Church’s tabernacle, take the precious Body, and bring Holy Communion to someone in the absence of a priest, offering that person the final provision for the journey.

For, as you know, the Church keeps bread consecrated on Great and Holy Thursday in the tabernacle upon the Holy Table, for emergencies among the faithful. But this is an exception. The Canon is that the deacon and all those below him receive Holy Communion from the bishop or priest.

There is also this distinction: the clergy receive Holy Communion inside the sanctuary, except for monks, who must receive outside together with the laity. Only the emperor receives inside; everyone else must receive outside.

So he says, “Imparted unto me, Constantine the unworthy priest,” giving his name, “is the precious and all-holy Body of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of my sins and eternal life.” Thus, Holy Communion is not for many years of life, nor for healthy bones, nor for a little gold tooth, as some people say.

It is for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Nor are our works what bring forgiveness of sins. No. “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” This is why a person must have a close relationship with the Holy Chalice.

And so the priest partakes of the bread, the Body. Then he calls his deacon and says, “Deacon, draw near.” Come here now. I have received Holy Communion; I have received the Bread. Now you come forward. The deacon, too, says the appointed words.

“Behold, I draw near to Christ, our immortal King and God. Master, impart unto me. Please, Master, give unto me.”

He gives his name: “Unto George, the unworthy deacon, the precious and all-holy Body of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.” He says the same words, declaring the purpose for which he draws near to receive.

When the priest gives it to him, he says:

“Imparted unto George the deacon is the precious and all-holy Body of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.” Up to this point, then, both of them have received the Body of the Lord.

They must now receive the Blood of the Lord. Here there is a distinction between the laity and the clergy. The laity receive the Body and Blood of Christ together, united upon the holy spoon. The clergy receive the Body separately and the Blood separately, as Christians did in the early Church.

In the early Church, they received the Body separately. They crossed their hands in this way, and each person came forward in turn. The Bread was placed upon the hand; the person partook of it and then moved on.

The deacon stood farther on with the chalice and the orarion draped over it. He gave each person the Blood, by which the person was cleansed. Then the communicant moved farther on, where there was what is called the nama, and rinsed his mouth so that any particles remaining there would be washed down.

This still takes place in the Russian Church. If you go there, you will see this custom. On the Holy Mountain they have the blessing of water. At the side there is antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after the Divine Liturgy, and the blessed water. You rinse your mouth, and any remaining particles are washed down.

Later, however, because many superstitious practices had arisen—it is said that this occurred in the time of John Chrysostom—the Body and Blood of the Lord were united and given to each believer together in a single act. Only priests retained the practice of receiving the Body separately and the Blood separately.

We now come to the chalice. After the priest has received Holy Communion and has also given the Bread to his deacon, he says: “Again imparted unto me, Constantine the priest, is the precious, all-holy, most pure, and life-giving Blood of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.” It is the same formula once again. Then he takes the chalice and drinks from it three times.

Some remove the chalice from their lips between each sip and say, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” But are they receiving the three hypostases—the three Persons—of the Godhead, or are they receiving the Body and Blood of Christ?

Others say, “Amen, amen, amen.” On the Holy Mountain, they do not remove the chalice from their lips.

They take three sips without removing the chalice from their lips, and at the end they say, “Amen.” Many different customs have come to prevail. I have neither reason nor authority to make a dogmatic pronouncement on this matter. I am simply telling you what is seen, said, heard, and done.

As soon as the priest has received Holy Communion, he turns immediately to the words of Isaiah.

Isaiah received cleansing upon his lips when the burning coal was brought to him with the tongs. Earlier, when God was sending him out to preach, he had said, “I am a sinful man, a man of unclean lips. How can I go?”

As soon as he said this, a Cherub flew to the altar, took a burning coal with the tongs, and cleansed Isaiah’s lips with it. Then came the words: “Behold, this has touched your lips; it shall take away your iniquities and cleanse your sins.”

We placed these words as the conclusion of our book The Antidote to Death, which speaks about Holy Communion. “This Blood,” he now says, “has touched my lips; it shall take away my iniquities and thoroughly cleanse my sins.” There, the tongs; here, the communion spoon. There, a Cherub; here, a cherub. Yet some people say, “But the priest is a sinner.”

Likewise, when a priest vests and serves, he is holy. Afterward, when he removes his vestments, puts on his own clothes, and leaves, he will once again have his own baggage and burdens. But while he is serving the Divine Liturgy, take heed, for it is written: “He makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire.”

Never quarrel with a priest—never—even if you are right. Take the humbler path; take the humbler path, and you will lose nothing. If you will permit me, because this is a burning and controversial issue over which people go to extremes, I will tell you about something that happened here in Athens a few years ago. One of the two men is still living: the priest. The priest was serving the Divine Liturgy, and a man came forward to receive Holy Communion.

The man understood these matters and knew that he could receive Holy Communion on the Monday after Pascha, on the day after Christmas, and on other such days. But the priest refused him Holy Communion and harshly sent him back before the whole congregation, there in the Church.

The people, who sit in the shadow of death and know nothing beyond the needs of their belly, took the clergyman’s side. But the other man, who was educated and humble, answered the elder calmly and gave him the appropriate answers from Holy Scripture, the Fathers, and the teaching of the Church.

As a result, the priest relented and gave the elder Holy Communion. He communed him; in other words, he withdrew his refusal, in a sense. But a sharp dispute had already taken place between them. At first the priest had refused to give him the Holy Gifts and had held them back.

The priest drew his hands back into the sanctuary, while the other man opened his mouth and spoke harsh words. They were words of God, but harsh words nevertheless. What do you think happened?

Two days later, the priest fell and broke both his arms completely. The layman lost the power of speech and died without recovering it. Someone may ask, “What does this mean?” I do not know, and you should not rush to decide what it means either. I am simply telling you what came between them and what happened afterward.

That is all I am telling you: what took place between them and what followed. So if you find yourself before a priest who does not know his duty, take the humbler path. It is not the end of the world. Saint Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain says, “God will give you the grace that you would have received at that moment.”

God has His own way. He knows the priest’s indifference and ignorance concerning these matters, and He will give you that grace. Do not be embittered. Are there not people who want to go to Church during Great Lent and at other times?

Yet their spouses—or the reverse, whether husbands, wives, or other people—do not allow them to go. Do you think the Lord abandons them? Do you think He leaves them without grace? I remember a woman employed in domestic service who told me:

“They would not let me go to Church on Theophany,” she said. “They would not let me go—and it was not even because I had work to do. So I made the sign of the Cross, went to the tap, turned it on, filled a cup, and drank the Great Agiasmos—the water of the Great Blessing—from the tap. And I believe that our Lord sanctified it on that day.”

I believe it too. You should have heard how she told me, with tears welling in her eyes and running down her face. “And so, Mr. Panagiotis,” she said, “I drank the Great Agiasmos from the tap. I believe that on that day Christ was present there, in my own water as well.” Do you understand? This is how we should approach such things. Someone may say, “But I am right.” Yes, but what about the other person’s ignorance? How do we know that we are right and they are wrong? Are they not also one of us? In any case, know that at that moment the priest is like a Cherub. Take heed—take heed. Who is the man lifting up the Holy Gifts at that moment? I do not know.

Do you remember what I told you the other day about that deacon who was about to fall, and whom God sent to save the other man? I cannot remember whether I told it here or in Thebes. In any event, there is no time for me to tell it now.

That was elsewhere as well.

In any event, continuing here, the priest humbly confesses that this Blood has cleansed his lips from his sins and made him clean.

the precious, all-holy, most pure, and life-giving Blood of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.

Holding the communion cloth, he takes care that nothing drips or spills. He gives the deacon the chalice and says, “Again there is given to you, Deacon, the precious, all-holy, most pure, and life-giving Blood of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.”

And the priest says once again: “Behold, this has touched your lips; it shall take away your iniquities and cleanse your sins.” The priest says these words on his behalf; the deacon does not say them himself.

Once they have both received Holy Communion, the atmosphere changes and becomes joyful. There in the sanctuary they now speak of the Resurrection and its joyful events. For, as we said at the beginning, if you remember—and one day those who record these things ought especially to arrange them into a series—the Divine Liturgy encompasses the thirty-three years of Christ’s life on earth.

It includes His preparation, how He came down to earth, and all these events, up to His burial, His Resurrection, and His Ascension—always, now and ever, and even when He comes again. A person should therefore remember that, at the Great Entrance, Christ came to His burial, and now He has risen. The clergy within have received Holy Communion, but we outside have not yet received the news. They are speaking of it among themselves. They have received Communion from the risen Jesus, and they speak of the joyful events of the Resurrection.

And there in the sanctuary the deacon says: “Having beheld the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the holy Lord Jesus, the only sinless One. We venerate Your Cross, O Christ, and we hymn and glorify Your holy Resurrection; for You are our God, and we know no other besides You; we call upon Your name.”

These are words from Pascha—you remember them—and they are said at every Sunday and feast-day Divine Liturgy. Whenever the Divine Liturgy is celebrated, these joyful words are said. Yes, these joyful words are proclaimed: “Come, all you faithful, let us venerate the holy Resurrection of Christ.”

“For behold, through the Cross joy has come into all the world. Ever blessing the Lord, we hymn His Resurrection; for, having endured the Cross for us, He destroyed death by death.” Then he continues with hymns from the ninth ode of the Paschal Canon.

There follow those Paschal hymns: “Shine, shine, O new Jerusalem,” “O divine, O beloved, O sweetest voice,” “O Pascha, great and most sacred,” and the rest. He speaks of the joyful events of Pascha. Christ is risen, and now the priest will present Him to the people. He will come out with fear, bearing the One whom we buried earlier, the One whom the Jews crucified. He has risen and has given Himself so that we may receive Him, be saved, have our sins cleansed, and enter with Him into the Kingdom of Heaven.

But I must stop here, although I still had another five minutes.

There is not enough time to explain the hymn “Having Beheld the Resurrection of Christ.” Five minutes will not suffice, as you understand. Let us not spoil it by rushing; we shall stop here.

That is all for tonight.

Everything in its proper time.

Tonight our subject will continue from where we left off previously. You will remember that we had reached approximately the end of the Divine Liturgy, specifically the point at which the clergy receive Holy Communion within the sanctuary.

Last time we discussed the words exchanged between the deacon and the priest just before they were both to receive Holy Communion. After they had communed, each in turn recited the words from Isaiah: “Behold, this has touched your lips; it shall take away your iniquities and cleanse your sins.”

Then, because the Divine Liturgy is a joyful event, as we have said, they recite within the sanctuary several joyful passages from the Paschal service—three or four troparia: “Having Beheld the Resurrection of Christ,” “Shine, Shine,” “O divine, O beloved, O sweetest voice,” and “O Pascha, great and most sacred, O Christ.”

These are words we hear especially during the season of Pascha, words filled with joy. For, as we have said, the entire Divine Liturgy presents the whole economy of the Incarnation: Christ’s descent, His coming among us, His Crucifixion, His Resurrection, and then, as the service continues, His Ascension.

At this point another event intervenes. Now that the clergy have received Holy Communion within the sanctuary, they prepare to give Holy Communion to those outside as well.

There ought to be people outside the sanctuary ready to receive Holy Communion. Unfortunately, there have even been occasions when there was not so much as a small child outside to receive. This, of course, is very sad. It would seem that the Divine Liturgy had no purpose in being celebrated at all. Now someone may say, “Had it no purpose, then? Did it benefit no one?” It benefited the departed. It benefited them; they received Holy Communion indirectly.

The people outside were completely unprepared. They had not prepared themselves and had not come for the Holy Eucharist. They had simply come to Church without considering why the Divine Liturgy is celebrated.

If there are people outside who are to receive Holy Communion, the remaining portions of the Lamb must be placed into the chalice. The Lamb was divided into four portions marked “Jesus Christ conquers.” The priest, or the bishop, and the deacon received their portions; the portions marked NI and KA remain. These must now be placed into the holy chalice and brought out through the Holy Doors, to be given to the faithful with the invitation: “With fear of God, faith, and love, draw near.”

This is a threefold requirement that every believer must have in order to approach. We are told that we need fear of God—that is, we must know what we are about to approach. We must not come casually or carelessly. To fear God means to take God seriously.

I take God into account; I revere God.

He will not first look upward for approval. That is the person who fears God. There are people who do not fear God.

And indeed, man ought to fear God. There are two things that a person must fear—God, forgive me, I mean man must fear two things: sin and God. He must fear both to the utmost. And, of course, if he fears God, he also fears sin and avoids sins.

And if he fears sin, he fears it because he fears God. The two are inseparably linked. A person cannot say that he fears God but does not fear sin. Nor can we say that someone who fears sin is at the same time without the fear of God.

No! Whoever fears sin also fears God. Be wary of the person who does not fear God, for neither does he fear sin. And the person who does not fear sin does not fear God either.

He is without the fear of God. Far from receiving Holy Communion, whatever else he may wish to do! A person must therefore come with fear of God, with faith in the Mystery, and with the true faith: “I believe, O Lord, and I confess that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

“Who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am first.” Each person must think of Christ in this way, as his own personal Savior.

He must also have true faith in the Mystery: that this is the Body and Blood of Christ; that if I approach unworthily and unprepared, I shall be consumed by the fire, but if I approach worthily and properly prepared, my sins will be consumed and my soul will be made radiant.

True faith—and love. Love is an indispensable companion, because it was God’s love for man that brought God down to earth so that man might be raised again to heaven. This love became incarnate and brought about our adoption as sons.

Love, then, is an indispensable companion. That is why, as we have often said during our discussion of the Divine Liturgy, there is so much mention of peace: “In peace let us pray to the Lord”; “for the peace of the whole world”; “peace be with you all”; and “let us love one another.”

All these things are bound up with love. And when love is absent—and this love must extend in two directions, toward our neighbor and toward God—a person must not approach Holy Communion.

Many people approach Holy Communion while still harboring long-standing passions, deep hatreds, and many grave conflicts, simply because it is a feast day—because it is Christmas, Pascha, or the Dormition. Under no circumstances will Christ sanctify such a so-called believer when that person has not yet made the sacrifice required in order to love.

For love is born of sacrifice, and it requires sacrifice. It demands blood; it demands that you surrender your ego, and perhaps even give up your possessions.

You must attain to that blessed day, the day called God’s own, and this is an essential requirement. No one should ever set out for Church or approach Holy Communion, or go to prayer or any other act of worship, to a memorial service, a funeral, or a Baptism, while hostility remains between people, since reconciliation is presumed to be the purpose of all these things.

Let us go and pray.

σου κοστίζει πολλά; Γιατί δεν έχει; Λείπουν οι πρώτες ύλες. Πόσο σου κοστίζει αυτό το ένδυμα;

Λοιπόν, η παραβολή του Ασώτου Υιού είναι ανάγλυφος: πώς ακριβώς ο άνθρωπος, αν θέλει να μην κολαστεί, να μην είναι εις κόλασιν αιώνιον, αλλά ζωήν αιώνιον η Θεία Κοινωνία, πώς πρέπει να προσέρχεται. Βλέπει, λοιπόν, λέγω, εκείνη τη στιγμή ο Υμνωδός όλη αυτή την κατάσταση και λέγει: Εν τες λαμπρότηθη λέει των Αγίων σου Κύριε, πώς θελεύσω με ανάξιος Εάν γάρτον μίσοσιν εισελθείν εις τον νυμφώνα, όχι τόν με ελέγχει Ότι ούκ εσύ του γάμου και δέσμεως εκβαλούμε υπό τον Αγγέλον Τι γάμο λέγει εδώ; Ποιος είναι ο γαμβρός και ποια είναι η νύμφη;

Διότι το αν έχεις βαλίσες και έργα άγαθα, αυτό δεν σε παριστούν να ταξιδεύεις Κανένας ταξιδιώτης δεν ταξίδευσε διότι είχε αποσκευές. Άνθρωποι χωρίς αποστεβάση που είχαν βγάλει η φυτήρια και ταξίδευσαν Άνθρωποι με αποστεβάσαν αλλά που δεν είχαν βγάλει η φυτήρια δεν ταξίδευσαν Τι έχετε να μου πείτε; Είναι έτσι ή δεν είναι;

Ορισμένοι το ποτήριο το ξεκολλούν από τα χείλια τους και λέγουν το όνομα του Πατρός και του Υιού και του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Τώρα, το τρισυπόστατο της Θεότητας κοινωνούν ή το σώμα και το αίμα του Χριστού κοινωνούν;

Όταν ο Ησαΐας εδέχθη δια της λαβίδος τον καθαρισμό με τον άνθρακα των χειλέων του. Γιατί είχε πει γρηγορότερα που τον έστελνε ο Θεός να κηρύξει λέει εγώ Εγώ είμαι άνθρωπος αμαρτωλός, λέει, άνθρωπος ακαθάρτων χειλέων, λέει, πού να πάω εγώ;

Τα χέρια του τα πήρε μέσα. Και ο άλλος άνοιξε τη γλώσσα του. Είπε λόγια, σκληρά όμως λόγια. Του Θεού λόγια, μα σκληρά λόγια. Τι λέτε έγινε;

Έχει τον τρόπο του και ξέρει την αδιαφορία και την άγνοια του ιερέως για τα θέματα αυτά. Θα σου τη δώσει λέει, μην πικραίνε Μήπως δεν υπάρχουν άνθρωποι οι οποίοι θέλουν να πάνε στην εκκλησία, Μεγάλη Σαρακοστή κλπ.;
