Summary
The lecturer teaches that the departed can be helped only through Jesus Christ and His Church, especially through the Eucharist and the Church’s prayers. He explains that personal prayer, candles, and trisagia are beneficial, but emphasizes the commemoration of names at the Divine Liturgy and the placing of their particles into the Holy Chalice. Those who wronged someone who has died should repent, confess, pray for the person, seek forgiveness with a contrite heart, and restore any material injustice to the deceased’s heirs.

May God grant that tonight we may continue the series of talks we began so long ago. As you know, the last two talks concerned death, burial, and the help that the living can offer the departed. I would not be exaggerating if I told you that the talk the night before last, in particular, caused an uproar. I never imagined there could be such ignorance about basic matters—especially matters concerning those who, as I said yesterday, are the most deserving of our compassion, because they cannot help themselves and must wait for us. When I spoke about how we can help someone who has died, I appealed to my Church. For only Christ, through the Church, can reach that place where the souls of our departed are. I cannot reach them there, and my gifts cannot reach them unless they pass through Jesus. Jesus is the connecting point; we must pass through Him. There is no other way to help or support
a person who has departed from this world.
To be more precise, many things were said. The first thing that reached my ears—and certainly this is not everything that was said—was this: How is it possible for souls
beyond the grave, wherever they may be, to have any connection with the so-called Body and the so-called Blood of Christ? They say, “No, not really the Body and Blood of Christ,” as though we did not believe that they truly are Christ’s Body and Blood, but only bread and wine. Their proof is this: we see bread.
We see wine; we taste bread and we taste wine. How can you fail to remember, I ask, that this bread and this wine are the Body of Christ, and that they have a connection with that soul and can help it? Do you understand? And these things were being said by Orthodox people—people who had apparently come into these surroundings merely to light a candle. Perhaps they were just passing by; who knows? They came in and sat down, because this objection arose from yesterday’s talk. I do not know whether any of them are with us tonight, whether someone can convey this to them, or whether this matter will concern us as well. It is true that we taste bread and taste wine.
But in their very essence Christ is present there. If someone reads a prayer from the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, he will see that it says of the dread Mysteries, “Your Son rests upon them.” Upon those things—upon the bread and the wine—Your Son rests. A person cannot understand how flesh—flesh, forgive me—how bread can become flesh, and how wine can become blood. Have you ever gone to the doctor, and if you happened to be a little overweight, what did he tell you to cut out? The first thing he told you was to cut out bread, or at least eat less of it. Why? Can you not see what it becomes? Bread becomes flesh.
It does; and it also becomes blood. What else does it become? So if I remove bread from my diet, I will lose weight. Of course I will. I, then, can turn bread into flesh and wine into blood. A person’s own body mysteriously transforms the bread he eats—the bread from the bakery—without his knowing how. It makes it into flesh, bodily weight, and blood; and it turns the wine he drinks into blood. Yet that same person doubts that Christ and the Holy Spirit can do this in the Mystery of the Church. He asks, “If I eat it?” Yes, if you eat it, it even becomes flesh. “Do you drink wine?” Yes, and it becomes blood. “It cannot happen.” It does happen. How does it happen?
Right there within you, does it not? What a great mystery this is! How can you demand to understand it through experience? Do you refuse to accept that life can be present—that life is present—in the bread and the wine? That Christ Himself is present there? Do you understand? Man himself, who is a mystery, turns bread into flesh and transforms wine into blood; he gains weight, grows stout and strong, and so forth. Yet that same man doubts whether God can do this. Where is our intelligence today when it comes to these matters? Secondly, let me give you another example on this point. Take an egg. What is that egg? It has a shell, a white, and a yolk inside. Do we agree?
Is that all it is? Of course, that is what it is. But put it beneath a hen’s wings. What will happen? It will become a bird. In other words, life comes forth from it. The egg has life within it; when warmed, it brings forth a bird. How, then, can you deny that beneath the bread on the Holy Table there is the Body of my Lord, and beneath the wine in the Holy Chalice there is the Blood of my Lord? These are reasonable arguments. No philosophy is needed. Still, I want to believe that these people are far from the Church. And keep this in mind: whenever you see such opposition, know that something is happening there. Satan’s interests are being threatened. Man must not be allowed to learn the truth, because Satan is a sadist.
He is not merely troubled by people, nor does he merely wish to hold them captive here on earth; he can even take revenge on them beyond the grave. And this ignorance is itself a form of revenge, when a person does not understand the truth of the matter. When someone does not know what takes place in the Church—why he brings the prosphora and what the priest does there—Satan holds those souls in his grasp, and we cannot help them. That is why I believe that, through the Church, great benefit is offered to those who have departed beyond the grave. That was the first thing said. Now pay attention to the second thing that was said about the same matter we discussed last night.
A well-dressed young lady, evidently a university student, said, “In my opinion...” First of all, who are you to have an opinion? How can you hold an opinion different from that of the Church? Who invited you to hold an opinion different from the Church, and how dare you do so? “In my opinion...” Really? You have an opinion? What had I said? She continued, “I can help my departed loved one even without the Church.” How, exactly? Then she added, speaking about me, “It seems to me that this gentleman has been well paid by the priests. Through this sermon of his, he supposedly helps bring people into the Church to hold a memorial service, so that the priest can receive five drachmas, or to bring an offering so that the priest can receive two.” So I have been paid, she says. Of course, she has no idea where I come from, who I am, whether I am paid or not, or what I do. She does not know me even from a distance, let alone personally. “Do you not see,” she continued, “that people have woken up? Today they no longer hold memorial services with priests. Every day the newspapers say, ‘Instead of a memorial service, such-and-such an amount has been given to a nursing home, a charitable meal, or orphans in need.’ And that is all.” It is true that lately we have read many such notices in the newspapers.
“Instead of a memorial service, one thousand drachmas for my mother,” for example, “for my father, my child,” and so forth. Instead of a memorial service. What does that mean? Away with the Nazarene, away with His Church, away with His priests, away with His intercessors! “I will send a thousand drachmas directly to my mother.” Can you tell me where your mother lives? Can you tell me the address to which you sent the money order? Do the elderly people in the nursing home know where your mother is? Or perhaps those elderly people—if they truly are devout elders and not wicked old people—will say, “May God forgive her,” and thus turn again to God. After all, that is why you give the thousand drachmas. Whom are they to forgive, and why? It is God whom they must ask to forgive her. Therefore, by what you do there,
they bring you back to the very place you wished to avoid and exclude. So what is written in the newspapers is wrong. And woe to those parents and others who have left behind such unbelieving children, for those departed people receive nothing. Give a billion drachmas to the nursing home: not a penny reaches your mother if you have not first gone to Christ. You have not first gone to the Nazarene. First you must go to Christ and the Church. You must bring that little prosphora, the slip of paper with her name, a little oil, a candle, and incense, so that the priest or bishop may take out a particle for her at the Prothesis and her dear soul may be placed in the Holy Chalice. All of this costs no more than ten or twenty drachmas.
The vanity is ours: we have made a memorial service cost I do not know how many thousands. No. All that is needed is a small dish of wheat—often even uncooked—a candle, a prosphora that we can make ourselves, and five drachmas for the priest. That is the whole matter. Our own vanity has created a situation in which holding a memorial service has become impossible for some people. They cannot afford it. So first take these things to the poor Nazarene and to His Church; then, if you have it, give a billion to the elderly. Give to orphanages and charitable institutions. But if you do not bring this offering to Christ, if you push Christ aside and say, “I do not want You, Christ. I will send something in my own way to my mother, my child, my sister, my father, or my spouse,” then know this: you have failed. Neither your departed loved one nor you will receive any benefit.
You may write and give instructions, “Instead of a wreath”—not instead of a memorial service—“give five hundred drachmas to the nursing home.” That is fitting. But not instead of a memorial service. A wreath is one thing; a memorial service is another. We see entire fortunes spent on wreaths that are either resold or wither that very evening and go to waste. The money need not be wasted; it can help many people in need, and if you give it in this way, it will certainly be in memory of the departed person for whom you offer it. But it must not replace the memorial service. The memorial service is a way of nourishing that dear soul. It is a way for the soul to be washed anew in the Blood of the Lamb. And it is Satan
who holds these young and other unbelieving spirits captive today, causing them to speak against the Church, against the clergy, and against these established observances—the memorial services, the kollyva, and the trisagion—through which we can help our loved ones beyond the grave. That is what this young woman said last night. So she may give money instead of a wreath, but not instead of a memorial service, because Christ holds the soul. The nursing home does not hold it; the orphanage does not hold it; no one else does. Anyone who acts in this way is extremely foolish. He neither helps his loved one nor gains any benefit himself. So much for that. A third thing that was said is this.
It was said that if someone wishes to help his departed loved one, he can do so through prayer. It is true that prayer has great power, but it is not the only thing needed. No matter how much a person prays, if he does not receive Holy Communion, he will go to Hell. Man does not need prayer alone; he also needs food. Can you live merely by breathing oxygen while your stomach remains empty? It is the Blood of Christ that cleanses sins. Prayer does not cleanse sins; it illumines you and leads you to Him who does cleanse sins.
Therefore, it is not enough simply to go to the grave and light a candle, or to make some other gesture. It is not enough even to bring the priest and have him read a trisagion. That is not enough. It is a prayer asking God to judge a soul dear to you with mercy. It is a good thing, but nothing brings greater relief than what that soul experiences when the priest places its particle into the Holy Chalice—as I illustrated for you last night—and says, “Wash away, O Lord, by Your precious Blood, the sins of Your servants,” placing there the particles representing the souls of these servants of God. Saint John of Euchaita, the author of the service of the Three Hierarchs, says the following:
A lantern, he says, may go in front, but often when it comes from behind, the person walking can still see by its light. By this he means the help we offer people through their memorial services. You know that some people departed from this world without ever having received Holy Communion, except perhaps when their grandmother took them or their school took them on occasion. You know this. Yet beyond the grave, they received Holy Communion indirectly. They were benefited more after they died than while they remained here. Perhaps this seems strange to you. But do you know how many such arrangements God makes? Let me give you an example. People think that a person must ripen before he dies. That is what you do when you harvest fruit. I know that you and I harvest fruit when it ripens.
Yet there are certain kinds of fruit—for example, the krystalli pear—that you pick while still unripe and place in cold storage so that it may ripen. Do you know how many such unripe krystalli pears there are among us—people who will be helped more after death, through memorial services and the other things done for them, than they ever would have been while alive, when they would never have come to receive Holy Communion on their own? In His love, God arranges many things in many different ways. My beloved, never listen to such people. Do not deprive your departed of this help, because tomorrow you too will be deprived of it. If you leave this world holding such convictions and pass them on to those who remain behind, you will be repaid in the same coin. And that is a terrible thing. Satan is lurking in these snares. I repeat: the Church continues to love mankind and desires to help each person until the Second Coming. This brings a person immense benefit!
I once had the opportunity to write a book—I do not know whether the young man here has it. It is called Are Our Departed Aware? It contains some remarkable accounts. One of the most remarkable took place on the island of Oinousses, near Chios. The person involved is still alive today. See how swiftly God comes to people’s aid. A young woman died on Oinousses. One of her uncles, a shipowner, had many friends and acquaintances. On the day of her funeral, he told his fisherman not to bring any fish to the house, though every day the fisherman would bring them the finest catch. His niece’s funeral was being held, and he had no appetite. But secretly, without telling anyone—for he himself did not believe—
he gave his fisherman these instructions: “Put it on my account. Take the fish you would have sent me—a red porgy or whatever it may be—and send it to such-and-such a family.” They were a poor family. “Send it to that family,” he said. And within himself he added, “For the soul of Konstantina.” That was the young woman’s name. No one else knew anything about this. The funeral was held that afternoon, together with all the usual customs of the village. That night, toward dawn, he lay down and drifted into a light sleep. Suddenly Konstantina appeared before him and said, “Uncle, thank you so very much for the fish you sent me.” Her uncle froze. He understood immediately. This became the reason that the man came to believe that there is life beyond the grave.
The souls know, and they receive according to what we send them from here. And so he became a Christian. This account has been written down, and it is not the only one. On another occasion, a man was working in a quarry with others when the quarry collapsed and buried them—thirty or forty men. They were all believed to have been killed. When the wife of one of them, a woman of faith, heard what had happened, she began to offer forty consecutive Divine Liturgies for him. Every day she brought a prosphora to the Church for the Divine Liturgy. She had reached perhaps the fifteenth or seventeenth day—I do not remember exactly—when one morning she met a man on the road. He said to her, “Where are you going? The priest waited for you and then left.” So the poor woman turned back, believing that the priest had waited and gone.
The same thing happened once more, perhaps on the twenty-fifth or thirtieth day—twice in all. Meanwhile, they had begun removing the earth so that they could recover all the bodies and bury them. By about the fortieth day they were still hauling away the earth. Then, from within the place where they were digging, they heard a voice: “Be careful! Do not kill me! Be careful!” A voice was coming from underneath. “Who is that?” And who could possibly have remained alive beneath the earth for forty days without food? Guided by the voice, they determined where he was and how to reach him. At last they came to a place where two rocks had fallen together in such a way that they had left an empty space beneath them.
There was earth all around, but beneath those rocks there was a hollow. The man had remained trapped there, and a little air reached him through an opening, allowing him to breathe. In any event, very carefully and little by little, they pulled him out. It was the husband of the woman who had been offering the forty consecutive Divine Liturgies. His wife arrived, and the others gathered around. “How did you survive down there?” they asked him. And he began telling them, “Two little lamps did this...” and so forth.
Where, then, is human knowledge? Yet man refuses to believe the Mysteries of God. What have you solved, O man, that you now wish to solve the Mysteries of God? Tell me, what have you solved? What is your tongue? Can you tell me, learned sir, what your tongue is? It identifies bitter, cold, sweet, salty, and sour at once. Take samples of those things in bottles to a chemist, and he will tell you, “Come back in twenty days, and I will tell you what they are.” Yet this piece of skin, this flesh hanging inside your mouth, answers immediately. What is this thing? Tell me how I speak and how you hear me. Tell me what I am about to say. How does it happen? Is there a recording tape inside me, as clever people say, and another tape inside you recording everything? No, sir!
If there were merely a recording tape inside you, then when you went outside you could say, “Do you know, Panagopoulos blasphemed the President of the Republic in there,” even though I had said no such thing. Why does your recording not report something different from what I actually say? Who cut the tape and added something else? There must therefore be a master within. Yes or no? Are these things put here falsely? What are they? How are teeth formed? How are their sockets formed? Who carves them within your mother’s womb and fashions canine teeth, molars, and all the rest? Who does these things? Tell me. Who, clever man? Who joins the intestines together? Who puts everything in place, sets it in motion, and makes it work? Who? Who formed the bones inside your mother’s womb from a little drop of fluid? Who could have done these things?
Who opened the tiny passages for your hairs? Do you even know that each hair has its own opening? Since you have not solved these things, how can you expect to solve the Mysteries of God? Your pride will not allow you to believe, and one day you will have to give an account for this. So many things are given to help man, yet he refuses to accept them. Many people have also been informed in dreams by their parents or other loved ones: “Thank you; I received what you sent me,” or, “Why did you send me nothing? Why did you leave me like this?” A man came to me a few days ago and spoke about a hieromonk who died almost a year ago. As he was dying, the hieromonk said, “Close my eyes firmly so that I may die with them shut.” They closed his eyes firmly; he raised his hand, and then he died.
He appeared and was told, “Grandfather, I have nothing from the house to give you.” He answered, “Thank you very much. Did you not send me a prosphora the day before yesterday?” And indeed, a prosphora had been offered. What could the elder receive from the prosphora? We shall see these things. How do those here and those beyond communicate and understand one another? Only on that day will we know. For now, we cannot comprehend it. Those who have departed see as though by the light of a chandelier, while those who remain here see as though by the light of a candle stand. We cannot understand the communion that exists between God and the faithful. We cannot understand it because the flesh stands between us and hinders us. But on that day, He says, “You will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.” Then we shall understand. It is called a Mystery. And when something is called a Mystery because we cannot easily comprehend it, do you simply cast it aside as unnecessary? Do you know how your heart works?
Do you understand all these things? If not, by that reasoning you would tear them out and say they are unnecessary. Alas, I say, especially for people today who will leave children of this kind behind them. They will weep bitter tears. Therefore, take care to weep here and now, so that these children may come to metanoia, return to the faith, bring the icons back into their homes, return to the Church, go to Holy Confession, receive Holy Communion, have children, and so forth. Only then will you depart in peace and go to the place prepared for you. And one day they too will come near, when they arrive on their own train and in their own way, illumined by God. There is another matter concerning what I told you about memorial services for the departed. It is a question that someone has raised, and I would like to clarify it. A man asks, “What should I do? The person with whom I...”
“The person with whom I had a dispute has died. What should I do?” Apparently, he acknowledges that he truly wronged this man. He drained the man’s lifeblood, took the fruit of his labor, managed to seize his plot of land, his better apartment, a room, or something else. In some way he wronged him. He did not make restoration or set matters right before the man died. Now the man has departed. What is he to do? Of course, I do not know whether this dispute was material or spiritual. It may have been spiritual. Perhaps he accused the man, envied him, wronged him with his tongue, slandered him, or stained the honor of the man or of his family.
It may have concerned his daughter, his wife—I do not know. There are these two ways in which a person can remain entangled with someone who departs first. It is a terrible thing. The other person leaves, and where will you go to find him, to ask his forgiveness or to grant him yours? When Paul said, “Do not let the sun go down on your anger,” he knew what he was saying. Do not go to sleep, he tells us; do not allow the sun to set before you have shaken hands and made peace. That is why, if you visit monasteries, no matter what may have happened, in the evening each monk will say to the other, “Forgive me and bless.” We do not know whether we shall see the dawn. Whatever happened has happened. Give me a canon, a rule of prayer, correct me—but forgive me and bless. Yet we have gone to sleep for many years carrying malice, this poison, and a stubborn desire for revenge.
Foolish man! He sleeps with a blasting cap of dynamite. Can you sleep, O man? If I put a blasting cap in your mouth, could you sleep? Sleep would flee from you, because if you bit down a little harder while sleeping, it would blow your brains out. You are sensible enough not to sleep with that. How, then, can you sleep with sin? How can you sleep with a passion, with hatred, anger, and vengeance? How can you sleep? In any event, if the matter is spiritual, confess it to your priest. Say, “Father, this and this happened. I accused that man and wronged him with my tongue, in my heart, and in other ways. Now he is no longer before me, and I cannot ask his forgiveness. But today I ask forgiveness from the merciful God, who has spared my life until now. I repent of what I did.
“Whether I did it out of malice or carelessness, I did it. I recognize it, I admit it, and I ask for the mercy of God and of that man.” Always bring a prosphora for him and write his name on your commemoration list. If possible, as the Fathers say, go and weep at his grave and ask his forgiveness there. And when God sees “a broken and humbled heart, God will not despise it.” If the matter is material—if you took his money, his fields, his orchards, or something else—you must make restitution. If you go through the countryside, and even through the cities, you will see that property boundaries have a way of walking. That is to say...
The boundary stone is here today, but in the morning you see that it has moved farther over. The next day it has moved farther still. Boundaries walk—but not by themselves. They are moved by the schemes of people whose minds are guided by the devil, persuading them to take another yard or two of someone else’s land. Woe to such a person! If an injustice of this kind has occurred and the man has died, you must return what was wrongfully taken to his heirs—to those he left behind: his widow, for example, his children, or whoever his close or more distant relatives may be. You have no right to give it away as alms. Give alms from what belongs to you. You have no right to give another person’s property as alms. Return it. Whether the rightful owner chooses to spend it on pleasures or throw it away, it belongs to him.
He has that right. Many people take what they have stolen or unjustly acquired and use it to make chandeliers and icons, or to help widows and orphans.
God does not accept such offerings. Give from what is yours. No one appointed you steward over another person’s sweat and blood, or over another person’s property. You must return it. I repeat: if the man has died, give it to his heirs. If there are no heirs, then you must still give it back, however much it may be, even if doing so leaves you out on the street. Give it to an institution, a monastery, the Church, or somewhere else, in his name. In his name, not yours: “In memory of George,” for example, provided none of his relatives remain. Had the property continued to belong to him, it would naturally have passed to his successors, his heirs.
If there are no relatives on either side, or if you do not know who they are, then, to free yourself from this burden, give the property somewhere appropriate. Consult your spiritual father about where to give it, and make sure it is offered in memory of the person you wronged. At the same time, confess the sin you committed. I do not know why you did it—whether out of need, malice, or love of money. I do not know what led you to do such a thing. But you must repent, and in this way you will be able to free yourself from the bond. A person is not released unless he returns what he has taken. There is no other way. Let me give you an example from the Fathers. The Apostle Paul writes that the union of husband and wife is dissolved only by sexual immorality or...
by death. If, for example, one spouse dies and then is raised from the dead, the woman is no longer his wife. Death has now separated them. Or if the wife had died, leaving her husband behind, and she was raised again, she would no longer have him as her husband, nor would he have her as his wife. Death has dissolved the bond of Holy Matrimony. They are now two separate persons, and neither is obligated to the other as husband or wife. But if I die after taking what belongs to another—if I have wronged him and withheld his sweat, his blood, his property, or anything else—and then I rise again, I still owe it to him. Death does not release me from the obligation to return what I owe to the person from whom I took it.
This is a serious matter. I do not know whether you are aware of it, but I believe that claims under labor law do not expire. Even after five hundred years, if it is a worker’s wages, you will still owe it and have to pay it. It is another person’s sweat. You cannot consume it yourself and say, “Many years have passed; I no longer owe it.” I am speaking of wages earned through a person’s labor—do you understand? Something similar applies here. Many people have never examined these matters. The other day, at another point in my talk, I said that we should go through our houses and cry out, “Let everything stolen or unjustly acquired leave this house: books belonging to others, tools belonging to others, money belonging to others, even water or an animal belonging to someone else,” and so forth. Many of us would be left naked, because everything we possess has been unjustly acquired. It did not come from our own sweat, but from our schemes, deceit, and cunning. God does not want such things. Keep nothing that does not belong to you.
No amount of almsgiving can remove these things from you, and no priest’s stole can read them away. Even if all the stoles of all the Orthodox priests were gathered together, they could not free you from any of it. You yourselves must take back what you took and return it. Many have taken tools, and the tools were lost. They borrowed books, and the books disappeared. They took money—do you not remember where it came from? It happens. Go and repay it. Otherwise, you are lost. One day you will find it all standing before you, and no one will be able to save you. For all these things were done here on earth, and they must be set right here on earth. That is what I have to say about this matter. Now, in connection with another subject—during the discussion about priests, the Church, memorial services, kollyva, and such things—the following remark was made rather indirectly:
“Today we need schools, not priests. We need teachers, not priests.” But earlier, when we had no schools and had only priests, did we have so many crimes? Did we have so many abortions? Did we have so many murders? Did we have so much wickedness? No, we did not. Therefore, education does not help if Christ is absent. Learning is good, but it is a double-edged sword. In the past, if an uneducated man wanted revenge on a woman, at worst he might cut off her hair. Today, the learned gentleman may put out her eyes as well, or seize her and throw her out of a window.
This is what education has become today: education without Christ, without Christ. This does not mean that schools are not good. Saint Kosmas of Aetolia founded many schools, but he also built many baptismal fonts. For education by itself is a double-edged sword. Most of our educated people are the ones committing the greatest crimes. They know how to dress everything up, and then they become accusers of others: Mr. So-and-so, Mrs. So-and-so, and so forth. And if the countryside has been ruined today, it has been ruined by the educated men and women of the cities, who go out there carrying their spiritual filth with them. I remember once going to speak in the mountain country of Kyparissia. There was a municipality called Tripyla; I do not know whether anyone from that area is listening to me.
It included six or seven villages, some large and some small. I was speaking, and a spiritual father who was with me was hearing confessions. That evening, where we were staying, I asked him as we talked: “What do you see here? What is most common? What sins are there? Is there blasphemy? Gambling? What is there—malice, lawsuits?” Because such things are generally found in villages.
He said, “That is nothing. What we have here is the avoidance of having children.” “Here?” I said. “In this village, five hours up in the mountains?” “Here.” “And how did this fashion reach so far?” I asked him. “An Athenian woman came last year to the village opposite, near Raftopoulo, and brought this fashion with her. What does it mean? Now the ladies want the pleasure, but they do not want to give birth. They want the enjoyment, but they will not bring children into the world.”
“There is not a single child,” he said, “in the village where we are staying.” I heard it myself. It was the next-to-last day; we were leaving the following day. I was to speak that evening and again the next day, and then we would depart. In any case, among the other subjects in my program, I also spoke about this matter and explained what it truly involved. When we returned the following year, twenty-one children had been born in that village. Being well-disposed people, they understood what a crime they were committing and what harm they were causing. I do not know what is happening there now. Twenty-one children! Before that, not even the cry of a little child—a blessing in a home—could be heard anywhere in the village, all because one woman had gone there to spread her filth. She had nothing else good to share. That was all she carried in her pot and in her basket.
That is what she gave them. Do you understand? So the point is not that we do not want schools. Yes, we do—but schools under the guidance of the Church. Saint Catherine had seven diplomas, but she laid them at the feet of Christ, and she completely confounded the hundred and fifty learned men of Athens. Basil the Great left Athens with seven diplomas—and not worthless scraps of paper, but seven real qualifications. Yet afterward he cast all these things aside and went into the desert for five years. His sister Macrina took hold of him and plunged him headfirst into monasticism, and after that he never came out. So we are not saying that education should be abolished. No. We need both the school and the Church alongside one another.
And we need the priest. All the teachers in the world may kneel down, but they cannot bring heaven down to earth. Yet when one priest kneels, he brings heaven down to earth. I was once in Dombrena, in the region of Boeotia—you know the area—during a long drought, when we were praying for rain. We went to the Paraklesis and the procession that were held. At a crossroads, the priest knelt down—a little priest, weathered by the sun—and began to weep, saying, “Send down, O Lord, peaceful rain.” And it began to rain. When that little priest did this, you could have gathered all the educated people and all the intellectuals together and wrung them dry, and you would not have drawn a single thing like that from them. His work is of another kind altogether. Therefore, I will not abolish the Church in order to build schools.
For what do the schools themselves produce? Without the Church, the schools are brought low. Those who attend only school and university and so forth, but do not go to Church—you have seen the sort of “enlightenment” this has produced and the dangers we face today. Faith, language, homeland—nothing has been left. And nothing will remain. We therefore need both. Let us not become unbalanced by going excessively to one side or the other and end up blind. No. We should learn, but always through the vision of the Church. There is one thing man must understand, yet unfortunately he does not: Christ, God, does not dwell in human brains. Not everyone understands this; the educated do not understand it. The brain—what is it, a two-hour affair? Seriously, what need does God have of it? What need does He have of it? The nous, the Fathers say...
is a hired servant of the heart. Do you know what “hired servant” means? It means that the nous is paid by the heart. The cleverer a man is, and the more cunning his heart has become through sins and other such things, the more dangerous he is. Beware of him; guard yourselves. Christ does not dwell in the intellects of men, but in their hearts. That is why, as I told you on another evening and in another part of the talk, the publican’s hand did not strike his head; it struck here, upon the heart, upon his breast. This is where the seal is set. And that is why Proverbs says, “My son, give me your heart.” Give Me your heart. Christ, then, does not dwell in people’s heads. God dwells in their hearts.
When Christ does not dwell in a person’s heart, the devil dwells there. And when the devil dwells in a person’s heart, that heart gives off a stench. Let me put it plainly so that you can understand. It is like removing the cover from the opening of a cesspit, and a foul smell begins to rise. It reeks; it stinks. “Lord, by now he stinks,” Martha said of Lazarus, who had begun to decay. Is that not what she said? In the same way, the stench of sin in the heart makes the nous dizzy, and a person becomes mad, as though he had drunk wine, as though he were intoxicated. Would you like an example? Listen. There is an honorable woman, a housewife, who needs to help her husband because they cannot make ends meet.
“I can go out to work, but what shall I do with the children? Where shall I leave them?” and so on. “We will look after them; I will look after them,” someone says. So she begins working, always anxious about when she can return, holding fast to the Cross, concerned for her children and struggling over how she will find them when she gets home. But at her workplace she begins an affair with her employer. From the moment she does that, she forgets the children. Then one afternoon she does not return to them at all. How did she too become mad? What happened? Sin entered in. When the sin of adultery entered, she became dazed. The maternal instinct is gone, respect is gone, God is gone, the Gospel is gone—everything is gone. Now she sees only flesh and nothing else.
People do such things. Why? Because sin has entered the heart. That is what sin does. And we see many people who truly lose their minds. That is why Christ said of the prodigal son, “But when he came to himself...” Where had he been before? Outside himself. He was mad. And when he came to himself, he understood and said, “How many hired servants of my father...” And that prodigal son returned. So, my dear friend, this is not opposition to school or to knowledge. But when you tell me that we should build schools alone and that we do not need priests, you do not understand what is at stake. You do not understand. Now, of course, the gentleman continued, and although there is not enough time, I will mention it. He went on to say, “People have stopped respecting them. Do you not see? Do you not read the newspapers?”
People have stopped respecting them. But I would like to know: why do people not respect them? Do they act with knowledge or in ignorance? Most act in ignorance. They do not know the role of the clergy. They do not understand why this bridge is needed. That is precisely why they speak this way. Now it is true that the newspapers publish stories. But they do not write such stories about teachers. They do not report that teachers have become child molesters. They do not report that teachers have dishonored young women. Have they not done so? Apparently one standard applies to them and another to priests. They write about priests, but not about teachers. Why do they not write about them? And it is not only these things; there are many, very many other things. Why do they not write about them? Because the system is arranged that way.
The clergy are accused so that the Church may be torn down, the light extinguished, and people left free to do whatever they wish. That is the reason. People still do not understand what it is they are attacking, even though you are obliged to guard it.
Satan does what we do in military operations. Many of the gentlemen who have gone to war will know, both from our forces and from the enemy, that we direct our fire mainly at bridges. We destroy the bridge so that they cannot cross, or so that we can cut off their supplies. The priest is the bridge. That is why he is attacked. If the priest played no serious role in the struggle against Satan, he would not be attacked. People would make a great fuss over him too, just as they do over all the corrupt figures whom they shower with praise, even though no decent Greek would want to greet them from forty yards away.
We should not even say good morning to such people. Yet some call them “Mr. So-and-so,” “the esteemed So-and-so,” “the most honorable So-and-so,” and on and on. Many of the things said against the clergy as arguments are wrong; they are not true. You see a sensational headline and then the story itself, as a gentleman mentioned something similar earlier, and I replied with the classic saying: “The mountain labored and gave birth to a mouse.” A long time ago, I read an afternoon newspaper that had repeatedly taken upon itself this campaign against the clergy. It carried the headline: “Seraphim Summoned Before the Prosecutor to Give an Account.” It was printed in letters forty cubits high. You would say, “What crime has this villain committed?” And so forth. Yet he had merely been summoned...
to give an explanation, which he submitted in writing, concerning the House for the Blind, about which he had once expressed an opinion. But when someone saw the headline as that gentleman had fashioned it, he would think Seraphim was such a criminal that forty prosecutors ought to be after him. Of course, the people did not take down the newspaper and read the whole article. The stain against Seraphim remained. Yesterday it was against Ieronymos, then against Spyridon, then against Avgoustinos, and so on. This keeps happening. And a small incident comes to mind. Above Pangrati, where I live, there is a monastery dependency belonging to Simonopetra. An elderly monk lived there, Father Ieronymos, and he was a holy man. One afternoon, one of these gentlemen of the press went to see him.
Some of them are mere youngsters; in terms of life experience, they hardly know how to feed themselves. So this man went to the elder’s cell and introduced himself. The elder looked at him as though he were a mosquito. “I am a journalist, Geronta, Mr. So-and-so.” “Ah, an instrument of Satan, are you?” “No, Geronta, you did not hear me properly,” he said. “A journalist—Mr. So-and-so.” “His name is So-and-so. Mr. So-and-so, please—Mr. So-and-so.” “Yes, yes, an instrument of Satan, are you?” “Why do you speak to me like that, Geronta?” “I adjure you in the name of my Christ—not yours, if indeed you believe in Him:
what percentage of truth is there in the article you write?” Do you know what he answered? “Five percent. The other ninety-five percent is dressing.” “The subject, the actual point, is five percent. Are you, or are you not, an instrument of Satan for the other ninety-five percent?” The man got up and left without saying goodbye. So this is a system of Satan, working through people who do not know how matters truly stand and doing harm to the ignorant. “The priests, the priests,” they keep saying. One mouse ate the bread, and they say, “The mice ate the bread.” If we sit down and examine this matter, my dear friends, we will all have to go to a spiritual father for Holy Confession. For our tongue...
As I was telling you, if Christ were to become a physician, take a spoon, and press it down on your tongue, I wonder how many priests He would find that you have devoured, how many nuns, how many monks, how many bishops, and how many others. There is not yet an Orthodox mouth that has not devoured someone. We may say, “We are only discussing things; we are not judging anyone.” But we do not know where discussion ends and condemnation begins. “But I am telling the truth; I am not saying anything false.” If you tell lies, you are a slanderer; if you tell the truth in this way, you set yourself up as a judge. In both cases you are guilty. And this speaking against the clergy—a mortal sin—has never been brought to Confession. It has never been brought before one’s spiritual father. Keep these things from tonight, if you think you need them. If you do not need them, throw them away. Join them to everything else we have said here over these past twenty days, and to whatever else God may permit us to say. And let us attend to ourselves. Let none of us leave Aidipsos without going to Confession.
Let each person collect himself, go somewhere private, and write his sins down on a piece of paper. There are many spiritual fathers here, both local priests and visiting fathers who have come to take the waters, and they are ready to offer their services. My prayer for you is that, together with the bodily healing of these baths, we may also receive spiritual healing. We shall remain here tonight and, God willing, continue tomorrow evening.

Γίνεται, και γίνεται και αίμα. Αμέ τι γίνεται; Ώστε, αν βγάλω το ψωμί από το σιτηρέσιό μου, θα πέσουν τα κιλά μου. Ασφαλώς θα πέσουν. Ώστε εγώ μπορώ να μεταβάλλω τον άρτον σε σάρκα και τον οίνον εις αίμα και, εν τούτοις, αυτός που μεταβάλλει ο ίδιος ο οργανισμός του, μυστηριωδώς, χωρίς να ξέρει πώς, τον άρτον που τρώει, του φούρνου, τον κάνει σάρκα και γίνονται κιλά και αίμα, και τον οίνον που πίνει τον κάνει αίμα, αυτός αμφισβητεί στον Χριστό και στο Πνεύμα το Άγιον να κάνει αυτό στο μυστήριο της Εκκλησίας. Και σου λέει: «Αν τον τρώγω;» Ναι, αν τον τρως, και κρέας γίνεται. «Οίνον πίνεις;» Ναι, και αίμα γίνεται. «Δεν γίνεται». Γίνεται. Πώς γίνεται;
Στα χέρια επάνω, έτσι; Πόσο λοιπόν πρόκειται περί μυστηρίου; Πώς ζητάς να βρεις πείρα στο θέμα αυτό; Ώστε δεν παραδέχεσαι ότι μπορεί να υπάρχει ζωή και ότι υπάρχει ζωή στον άρτον και στον οίνον; Ότι υπάρχει Αυτός ο Χριστός; Καταλαβαίνετε; Ο ίδιος, που είναι ένα μυστήριο, τον άρτον τον κάνει σάρκα, τον μεταβάλλει, και τον οίνον τον κάνει αίμα, τον μεταβάλλει και παχαίνει και χοντραίνει και δυναμώνει και λοιπά, ο ίδιος αμφισβητεί αν ο Θεός μπορεί να το κάνει αυτό το πράγμα. Πού υπάρχει νοημοσύνη σήμερα στα θέματα αυτά; Δεύτερον, ας σας πω ένα άλλο παράδειγμα επάνω στο σημείο αυτό. Παίρνεις ένα αυγό. Τι είναι αυτό το αυγό; Το αυγό αυτό είναι τσόφλι, είναι λεύκωμα και έχει και κρόκο μέσα. Συμφωνία;
Αν ήταν μαγνητοταινία μέσα, όταν βγείτε έξω μπορείτε να πείτε: «Ξέρετε, ο Παναγόπουλος μέσα βλαστήμησε τον Πρόεδρο της Δημοκρατίας», και εγώ να μην έχω πει τίποτα. Πώς η μαγνητοταινία σας δεν λέει εκείνα που λέω εγώ; Ποιος την έκοψε και πρόσθεσε άλλο; Άρα υπάρχει αφεντικό μέσα. Ναι ή όχι; Φοράνε ψέματα εδώ; Τι είναι; Τι τρόπο γίνονται τα δόντια; Τι είναι; Τι τρόπο γίνονται φατνία; Ποιος θα χαρακώνει μες στην κοιλιά της μάνας σου, στη μήτρα της μάνας σου μέσα, και θα κάνει κυνόδοντες, τραπεζίτες κλπ.; Ποιος θα κάνει αυτά τα πράγματα; Πες μου. Ποιος, βρε έξυπνε άνθρωπε; Ποιος θα κάνει τις αρμολογήσεις των εντέρων; Ποιος θα βάλει μέσα και ποιος θα βάλει μπρος και δουλεύουνε; Ποιος; Ποιος έκανε τα οστά μέσα στην κοιλιά της μητέρας σου με μια μύξα; Ποιος θα έκανε αυτά τα πράγματα;
Παρουσιάστηκε και λέγει: «Δεν έχω τίποτα, λέει, παππού μου, να σου δώσω από το σπίτι». «Ευχαριστώ πολύ, δεν μου έστειλες προχτές προσφορά;» Και πράγματι είχε κάνει προσφορά. Τι να λάβει ο παππούς από την προσφορά; Αυτά θα τα ιδούμε. Τι τρόπο συνεννοούνται και επικοινωνούνται από εδώ μετ’ από εκεί; Μόνο εκείνη την ημέρα. Τώρα δεν μπορούμε να τα καταλάβουμε. Τα βλέπουμε σαν πολυέλαιο αυτοί που φύγανε, βλέπουν σαν μανουάλι αυτοί που είναι εδώ. Μα δεν μπορούμε να καταλάβουμε αυτή την επικοινωνία η οποία υπάρχει μεταξύ Θεού και πιστού. Αυτό δεν μπορούμε να το καταλάβουμε, γιατί είναι η σαρξ στη μέση αυτή η οποία μας δυσκολεύει. Αλλά εκείνη τη μέρα λέει: «Γνώσεσθε ότι εγώ εν τω Πατρί, και υμείς εν εμοί, καγώ εν υμίν». Τότε θα το καταλάβουμε. Μας λέγεται μυστήριο, λοιπόν. Και κάθε τι το οποίο μας λέγεται μυστήριο, που δεν μπορούμε εμείς εύκολα... Πέταξέ το λοιπόν από εκεί, δεν χρειάζεται. Πώς ξέρεις πώς λειτουργεί η καρδιά;
