Summary
The Gospel of the Last Judgment completes the Triodion’s opening lessons by teaching that Christ saves, yet every person must respond through repentance and faithful action. All the departed will rise bodily, whether buried or lost at sea, and each person will answer according to his or her life before entering eternal life or punishment. Because death may come unexpectedly, Christians must continually examine themselves, remain united to Christ, and live ready for judgment.

We now come to the third part of this season, which began about twenty-two days ago. We are, of course, in the season known in the Orthodox Church as the Triodion. We spoke about its first part, the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee, and its second part, the parable of the Prodigal Son. Now we have reached the third part of this opening period within the whole season. What we hear here is both parable and prophecy, almost equally. It is the Gospel known as the Gospel of the Last Judgment. It is as though Christ were saying, “Gentlemen, I have told you how you are saved.”
“You are not saved by your works alone, as the Pharisee claimed, or as the elder brother of the Prodigal Son believed. It is Christ who saves. Yet afterward you must also respond, and you are called to act, because one day, whether you wish it or not, I will bring you to judgment.” I call this account both a prophecy and a parable. It is a prophecy because it says, “When the Son of Man comes.” The words “when He comes” are prophetic: He will indeed come one day. And it is also a parable because, as you know, it says that when He comes, He will divide humanity into two great groups.
He presents some as sheep and the others as goats. At this point He is speaking in a parable. For mankind, the Judgment is the most serious event after the Incarnation of Jesus. When our Christ ascended, as you remember from the Acts of the Apostles, two men in white appeared to those who remained gazing up into heaven and asked them, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven?”
What made them gaze into heaven and stand there, as we say, with their mouths open was the Ascension of Jesus. “This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”
He will come again. The Church received this truth and placed it in the Creed: “And He shall come again to judge the living and the dead.” In other words, He will return, and this will take place. We do not, of course, know the hour. But that it will happen—that one day there will be a judgment, and that He will return to judge the world—is certain.
This truth is confirmed from many directions and brings the whole matter to its completion. If we think of the various events of the Incarnation of Jesus as links, then we have made a chain of many links, with one final link still needed to join the whole chain together. That link is: “And He shall come again to judge the living and the dead.” We Greeks, in particular, were given a special admonition and reminder by Paul. When Paul came to Athens and spoke to our forefathers about Jesus, he left them without excuse, saying, “The times of ignorance, therefore—”
“God overlooked.” You did not know; you believed in stones, in the unknown God, and so forth. Very well, you were ignorant. But now you have heard. “Now He commands all people everywhere to repent.” From this point onward, he says, everything has changed. As for “the times of ignorance,” God overlooked them. You did not know, and He does not count that against you. But now that you have heard, things are different, because “He has appointed a day,” Paul says—a day He has determined—“on which He will judge the world in righteousness.” We, I say, bear a particular responsibility, because Christ personally addressed this message to us through Paul. As I have said, and still say, and wish to believe, this is the most serious event
for mankind after the Incarnation. It is indeed a momentous thing to know the incarnate God. But another supremely serious truth remains: mankind will now be judged by the incarnate God. For did not our Christ speak about this Judgment when He came into the world, in the words we read in the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew? “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit upon the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.”
“And He will set the sheep at His right hand, but the goats at His left.” As I told you, this is both prophecy and parable. It speaks of everything surrounding the Judgment, from verse 31 of the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew through the concluding verse, verse 46: “And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” I repeat, this is not the first time God mentions and reveals that there will be a judgment. From the foundation of the world, on various occasions, He has spoken of the Judgment and prefigured it. If someone wishes to search chronologically, for example,
for the earliest place where God spoke about the Judgment, he must open the Epistle of Jude. As you know, the Epistle of Jude is one of the seven Catholic Epistles and consists of a single chapter. This may come as a complete revelation to those who do not know Holy Scripture. In verse 14 it says: “Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, ‘Behold, the Lord came with His holy myriads.’” What did I read earlier? That He will come. Here it says
that He comes in all His glory, with all the Saints and all the angels. Enoch, the seventh from Adam, saw this. Imagine: he spoke of it in the earliest days of mankind. “The Lord came,” he says. Enoch saw Him “with His holy myriads,” with countless Saints. Why did He come? “To execute judgment”—He came to carry out the Judgment; Enoch saw it. “To execute judgment.” Whom will He judge? “All.” He will judge everyone. “And to convict”—He will judge everyone, but He will also convict “all the ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way.”
“And of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.” Thus, the earliest reference one can find concerning the Judgment is in the Epistle of Jude. Jude writes that Enoch saw the Judgment because God showed it to him. Where Jude obtained this account, I do not know any further; but this writing is divinely inspired and without error.
He saw the Judgment itself.
Chronologically, Enoch was the first. Then move forward to about seven hundred years before Christ, to Daniel. In Daniel 7:9–10, Daniel also writes that he saw the Judgment. He saw it exactly as Orthodox iconographers depict it: “I watched until thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days was seated. A thousand thousands ministered to Him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. His throne was a fiery flame, and its wheels a burning fire. The hair of His head was like pure wool.” This was how Daniel saw Him upon the throne. The court was seated, the books were opened, and the Judgment began. I do not have the Old Testament with me
to read the passage exactly, but I am telling you where it is. Daniel saw Him precisely upon the throne of Judgment, just as Christ describes Him and as He is depicted in Orthodox churches and holy monasteries by those who paint what is known as Byzantine iconography. John also saw this scene in the Apocalypse. It was shown to him beforehand. If I remember correctly, John writes in chapter 20, verse 11: “And I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose face—”
“the earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what was written in the books”—according to their faith and their deeds. He continues further: “The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them. And each one was judged according to his works.” Once again, God revealed to John exactly how it would be. It is almost as though John were copying what had earlier been shown to Daniel; yet in both cases it was the same Spirit. The scene John describes here is almost exactly the same as the one Daniel describes in his own chapter. If we consider all these accounts, we see clearly that it is one and the same Spirit who, in different periods and ages and through different people, repeatedly reminds us of this great event that awaits mankind.
Great and small alike will come to judgment, each, of course, according to the record of his life. Some people have already put their accounts in order, and their case requires little examination. For some will come to be judged, while others will come to be vindicated. Some will come for judgment and others to receive their reward. We will all pass before the tribunal. But to those who leave this world with their affairs in order, the words of our Christ apply: “He who believes in Me does not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” Of course, this does not mean a barren faith. It is not the Protestant notion of faith that says merely, “I believe.” Faith must be accompanied by the corresponding works: I must do what He commands and make use, for example, of the grace He has given me
through metanoia, that is, repentance, and Holy Confession. “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” But I am baptized. “He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned.” A person receives the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. “Unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood, you have no life in yourselves.” “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him; and I will raise him up on the last day.” There is a particular way in which people are saved. A barren faith—the claim that I believe in Christ and therefore am saved—does not save. As James says, “Even the demons believe—and tremble.” Indeed, regarding the divinity of Jesus, no human being believes in it as fully as the devil does. He believes it more perfectly. But he does not act accordingly; he does not obey. He follows his own will and, in his pride, invents
his own ways of salvation, unfortunately, both for himself and for those who follow him. The Gospel, then, presents the whole world coming forth. Those of you who read the Triodion, the Church’s book for the season through which we are now passing, should open it the day after tomorrow, on Saturday, for the first Saturday of Souls. See how much it says about those who have fallen asleep and how the Church relates to them. Not to the dead, but to those who have fallen asleep. For the Church, there are no dead. Our burial grounds are not places of the dead; they are cemeteries, places of sleep, because the Church wishes to remind us that there will be an awakening. The departed will awaken “with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God.”
One day we shall awaken, as Paul writes so beautifully. For us Orthodox, this passage from the Epistle to the Thessalonians is also the epistle reading at the funeral service. There Paul describes in detail how it will happen, how we will be changed, and how we will become new human beings once again. Ezekiel also prophesies our Resurrection in chapter 37. There God took Ezekiel and set him down in the midst of a valley filled with utterly dry bones, and He showed him how the Resurrection would take place. Ezekiel then preached to those dead, dry bones, and the bones came together in proper order; sinews appeared, flesh and skin covered them, breath entered them, and the people rose again.
Moreover, Paul speaks in the fifteenth chapter of First Corinthians about those who reject the Resurrection and refuse to accept that there will be a resurrection—and therefore a judgment. They reject the Resurrection because they do not want the judgment; that is, they fear the judgment because they have not put their affairs in order. There Paul says that if our hope in Christ is only for this world, and not for the life to come and the Resurrection, then we are the most pitiable of all people.
Indeed, he explains how we shall receive the new body, how we shall rise, and so forth. And he himself says that after this death comes judgment: “It is appointed for men to die once, and after this comes judgment.” And I repeat: if a person does not want to face death, does not want the judgment, and rejects it, it is because he fears being called to account. For the Resurrection also entails an accounting. And I remember a certain answer...
There was a question and an answer involving a missionary and a cannibal. When the missionary was speaking to the cannibals about the Resurrection, one of them suddenly called out from the back, “Impossible!” “Why is it impossible?”
“In any case, it is impossible. There is no Resurrection.” As they continued their discussion and tried to discover why he insisted that there could be no Resurrection, what did he say? “If there is a Resurrection,” he said, “then those whom I have eaten will also rise. And what will happen then?” Well, the man was telling the truth. He was saying, “If the people I have eaten rise again, I am ruined.” That is why you refuse to accept the Resurrection. This is how it is: most of us reject whatever exposes and condemns us.
What meaning, then, do virginity, morality, and fasting have? They have no foundation. If a person wants to be at ease and go about his business as he pleases, his conscience must not condemn him. Do you understand? Yet if there is one event that has been written down and clearly recorded, it is this matter of the Judgment. Holy Scripture even goes so far as to speak of the world to come, the new heaven, and the new earth. Peter writes in his epistle that there will be a new heaven and a new earth. Isaiah had already written that after the Judgment there would be a new heaven and a new earth. The present heaven and earth will pass away. John also saw the new heaven and the new earth. A little further on from the passage we were reading—I do not know whether...
you noticed it yourselves—in the twenty-first chapter he says, “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth”—new in both cases. “For the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.” Earlier, if you were following me, he had said...
“The earth and the heaven fled from His face, and no place was found for them.” This earth and this heaven passed away, and then, continuing further on, he says, “I saw a new heaven.” This heaven and this earth were replaced. Many people are troubled by this and ask what purpose it serves and why it must happen. But if we read Romans, we find Paul saying that nature—the earth and the heaven—suffers, groans together, and labors together in birth pangs.
They await the passing away of the present order so that they may be set free, because the earth has become implicated in sin. When man sinned, he cooperated with the devil; and because man was taken from the earth and returns to the earth, the earth itself appears sinful. This irrational and blameless earth, through man’s fault, appears defiled in the eyes of God. Therefore, He will bring it, the heavens, and all things to an end and make everything new, undefiled by the devil. For us this remains a Mystery; we cannot understand these things. Yet if we put them in their proper order in our thinking, we can say that this is how it will be. The earth, too, suffers in its own way until the Judgment takes place and the present order passes away. It suffers because of Satan, who has defiled it as well, and before God it no longer appears radiant, but is seen under the shadow of sin...
and it too must undergo judgment because of sin. In everything I have brought to your attention concerning the Judgment, I have done nothing more than show you how serious this matter is. It has been spoken of throughout all the ages of the world, on various occasions and through different people. Here in the Apocalypse, once these things were revealed to John, he recorded them in detail, because elsewhere they are somewhat veiled. He says: “I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life.” There are books concerning people in general—the creatures and creations of God.
As we have said before, people are not automatically children of God. The children of God, who are the brothers and sisters of Christ, are those of whom it is written: “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the authority to become children of God.” Their names are written separately in the Book of Life. Besides the great universal book in which everyone who has passed through this world as a human being is recorded, there is another book, as the passage says: “And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life.” Those who have been baptized are written in a separate book called the Book of Life. You may ask where we find support for this. If you take the Church’s Euchologion...
and read the service for the giving of a name before Baptism, after childbirth, you will find it there. After the prayers have been offered for the mother, the Euchologion gives the service for naming the child. The child should be named on the eighth day. The child is brought to the Church by the godmother or godfather, receives a name, and awaits Baptism. In that service there is a prayer asking Christ to preserve the child until the mother has completed her forty days of purification, so that the child may be baptized and she may also be present at the Baptism—or, in other words, so that the child may be inscribed in the Book of Life. This is what we mean. When a person is baptized, he is born anew and, as a new and truly living person, is written in the Book of Life.
If you will, it is like the prodigal son: God erases a name and writes it again. This reflects the course of a person’s life; his name is written and erased, because if he is not watchful, he falls. Yet he has the opportunity for metanoia, for repentance, and for returning. Death will judge him according to the state in which it finds him. If a camera catches me with my hand on my head, the photograph will show me holding my head. Death is exactly like that when it finds a person: “In whatever state I find you, in that state I shall judge you.” If it finds you in repentance—that is how it is for everyone. A person does not know when he will die, and therefore he must always examine himself to see whether he is in good order...
and whether he remains faithful to the confession he made. For on the day of Baptism, a person renounces Satan and unites himself to Christ, as we have said on other occasions. Then he puts on the first robe, the new garment that he did not possess as a descendant of the naked Adam and Eve. For, as you know, Adam and Eve went out from Paradise without grace, without the divinely woven garment.
God made garments of skin and clothed them. All people, therefore, should fear the Judgment and prepare themselves, because it has been spoken of since the foundation of the world and one day it will take place. In the continuation of this account of the Judgment, there is another illuminating point. Many people are concerned about what will happen to those who have died. Thank you.
Those who died in various ways and departed from this world will receive their bodies again. The passage says: “And the sea gave up the dead who were in it.” But the fish ate them, someone may say. And what did the fish do with them afterward? Did they not return them to the water? The particles of the human body, therefore, remain in the water. And Hades gave up the dead who were in it. Whoever died a natural death and was buried—the grave, Hades, will be opened and will give up whatever it holds within. Since the splitting of the atom, as you know, even science has addressed this question.
Matter is not lost; it merely changes. Consequently, when God gives the command—the command described in Ezekiel, which I read to you earlier—all these things will be brought together again, whether or not we are able to understand it. We must become human beings again so that we may live in a new heaven and a new earth. I could tell you what our bodies will be like if I knew what Adam was like before the Fall, or what our Lord was like after the Resurrection. Then I could tell you precisely what the human body will be like. But today we know neither one nor the other. We are children of the fallen Adam and live in corruption. We do not know what he was like before sin. Nor do I know what Christ was like—Christ, who did not sin and who, in His own person, raised up human nature. Yet this is how we shall be, because He became the firstborn and has gone into heaven before us as our forerunner.
We read this in Hebrews. I do not know what Christ’s risen body was like. If I knew either that or what Adam was like before the Fall, I could tell you, “This is how it will be.” But the point here is that no one will be lost. Even if beasts in the sea devour us, or beasts in the mountains devour us, whether we are in Hades, in a cemetery, or anywhere else, no one will be lost. One day everyone will appear before the throne to give an account, as the passage says. It speaks even of the little ones. And I take this opportunity to say something to those of us who have concerns about young children. Perhaps our child died when only a few days old, but we managed to baptize the child, even by emergency baptism. That child’s name should be placed on the commemoration list as an act of mercy for the father, the mother, the uncle, and the family.
The little child’s name should be included on the list. This is not because the child has sins, but because the child is spiritually nourished—truly nourished. The Holy Eucharist is offered both for the Church militant and for the Church triumphant. We who are here come into direct contact with the Chalice and with Christ; they do so indirectly. We bring to the Church the loaf called the prosphoron, from which the priests remove commemorative particles. Later they place those particles in the Holy Chalice and say, “Wash away, O Lord, by Thy precious Blood, the sins of Thy servants commemorated here.” It is as though we were sending a plate of spiritual food to the souls of those who have departed. There have been many revelations concerning what I am telling you.
You are depriving your children! Whatever their age may have been, you call them saints, little angels, and so forth. But they are never angels. A human being is not an angel; a human being is greater than an angel. Christ was not crucified for angels, nor does any angel receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. The human being is greater than the angel. The proof is that the angels are appointed as servants to human beings. Every soul has a guardian angel. If you are appointed to guard me, that means I hold the higher place. Is that not so? And does not the Old Testament say this as well? Paul repeats it in Hebrews: they are “ministering spirits sent forth to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation”—to help the people who desire to be saved. The soul has a guardian angel, and indeed, as you know, at Compline the Church has...
a prayer to the guardian angel of the soul. Therefore, do not neglect or deprive—not only the little ones, but all those who have departed. The greatest act of mercy that a clergyman or layperson can perform is to commemorate the departed, especially those who have no one to remember them: to present their names in the Church, write them on a commemoration list, and bring that list to where the Orthodox priest performs the Proskomedia. This is a great sacred work and a great blessing. Nothing outward or elaborate is needed; this is what is needed. Yet many of our clergy do not understand this and limit themselves to the five names someone brings them, though they could commemorate thousands. They could rise at two in the morning, as Father Nicholas Planas used to do.
He performs this great act of mercy for people. Those who do not carry out their ministry properly will not understand this, although there are others who do carry it out and see its fruits. Nor will it be understood by those of us who have not firmly grasped that we must go to Church with a list of names in hand, both for the living and for the departed. We should commemorate the living because there are also living people who are spiritually dead—our children, other relatives, neighbors, and so forth. They say they are alive, but they are dead as long as they remain cut off from God and from the Mysteries of the Church. And we should commemorate the departed, all those who have passed from this world. We should be in Church so that, while the priest performs the Proskomedia inside the altar, we outside may, if possible, commemorate thousands of names for inclusion there. Thus, all people will be judged, and both small and great will appear there, even though some may have mitigating circumstances, while
we adults have none. Yet all will pass before the judgment seat. No one will enter by his own righteousness. For neither those who are now among the saved nor those who are now among the condemned have yet received the final judgment. They simply know that some have been rejected and others have been accepted, but they have not yet been judged. What does Paul say? “God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.” He has appointed another day on which He will judge the world in righteousness, and He will judge everyone together: the Saints of the Old Testament and those of the New Testament. This is what Paul writes in the final verse of Hebrews, chapter eleven. Here, then, Christ says that He divided humanity into two great groups. He called the first sheep because they are gentle, mild,
and tame. He called the others goats because they are wild. We know the difference between a sheep and a goat. To the first He says, “Come,” and to the others, “Depart.” Let us consider those to whom He says, “Come, you blessed.” I want you to know that the text of the parable does not end exactly where I stopped. Those of you who read it know this; those who do not read it do not. After He said...
“The King will say to those at His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father,’” what are they to do? “Inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” How did this come about? He continues: “For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you welcomed Me; naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.” Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, “Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and welcome You, or naked and clothe You? When did we see You sick or in prison and come to You?” And the King will answer them:
“Amen, I say to you: insofar as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” This concerns those at His right hand. To the others He said, “Depart,” because they had done the very opposite. If we are not attentive here, we see only one side of the matter, though it has two sides. And if you wish, listen carefully on Sunday to those who preach. You will see that they will fail to distinguish one aspect—the more serious one. Almost everyone, if I may say so without being absolute, will speak about charitable works. “Ah, He says here, ‘I was a stranger, I was barefoot, I was hungry.’ That is all. Do this and you need nothing else.” But that is not so.
We must pay attention to what He said at the beginning: “Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you.” If charitable works were all that mattered, He should have said, “Come, you blessed of My Father, and receive your reward, because you labored and performed good works.” He would have said, “Come; you deserve it. This is the recompense for your merit, because you have done so many good works.” But the Kingdom of Heaven is not a reward earned by merit. It is an inheritance, as He says here.
Some have performed many good works and yet will not enter Paradise because they did not take care to become members of God’s household. Relatives inherit; laborers and servants do not. You must become a brother of Christ. Moreover, we must understand from the outset that the Kingdom of Heaven does not belong to us. It belongs to Christ. Christ is the one and primary heir. We are fellow heirs with Christ before God. If we have no relationship with Christ, we do not inherit, because to inherit we must be children of God. To become children of God, we must receive Christ, as we said earlier, according to John in the first chapter of his Gospel.
It says that they received Him, not merely that they believed in Him. The wording is specific: they received Him. The devil believes in Christ, but he does not receive Christ. I receive Christ; I partake of Christ in Holy Communion and become one with Christ. Consequently, I belong to Christ. I am Christ’s brother and, by extension, a child of God. If I say, “Our Father,” I say it because Christ is my brother. If Christ is not my brother, then God is not my Father either. We must understand this. We will do good, for we are obliged to do so, and Christ expects this from His brethren. “Insofar as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren.” He calls them brethren. He calls the faithful His brethren. He does not say, “Insofar as you did it for every sinner, every prostitute—buy her shoes and pay her expenses—or every thief.” No. He says, “to My brethren.” Insofar as you did it...
It is as though you had done it to Me, and I will repay you. “He who shows mercy to the poor lends to God.” I will repay; I am the guarantor. Here, then, He teaches us another lesson. If you have a small coin, take care where you give it. Do not simply throw it away. If you have a garment, consider where you will give it. This is why the Saints especially say, “Let your alms sweat in your hands.” Let it sweat; hold it there for a long time before giving it. What does this mean? Look carefully at the person to whom you will give it. This has even become a common saying: “I want to give it somewhere it will truly do good.” That is, give it to someone who will genuinely say, “Glory to God.”
I owe nothing to people who think I am obliged to give to them. My obligation is to consider whether I should give or not, whether you are worthy of it or not, and then to give. Christ says, “Insofar as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren.” The blasphemer, the unbeliever, and the heretic are not Christ’s brethren. Nor are they children of God; they are His creatures, His creations. Unless Christ receives a person, how can that person become His brother? Christ came into the world so that through Him we might become children of God again, “that we might receive adoption as sons.” Therefore, if someone does not receive Christ, does not receive His Church or His Mysteries, and does not receive His inn or its innkeepers, how can he possibly be a child of God? To inherit, then, he must belong to God’s household. He must not be merely a laborer, but a relative of God. This is why, the other day, if you noticed, the Prodigal Son said in his confession, “Make me like one of your hired servants.” “I am no longer worthy to be called your son. I do not ask to be your child; I do not deserve it. Make me like one of your hired servants.”
His father did not let him say that. “If I make you a day laborer, a hired servant who works for his wages, you will not enter Paradise. I want you to become my child and to feel at home with me. You know that everything here is yours.” When you also have a share in it, does that mean you made it yourself? Did you make it with your own hands? Man does not make it; God says, “I make it.” It is “the Kingdom prepared from the foundation of the world.” How could you or I have made it? You were born only today, yet He says that the Kingdom has been prepared from the foundation of the world. Therefore, it is His gift, given out of His love for mankind. Each of us, then, must ask: Am I related to God, and do I have any right to this inheritance? If not, how can I become related to Him? How does this kinship come about? Where does it begin?
Let us get to the heart of the matter: in what sense are we fellow heirs, and how are we related to God? When you search for this kinship, it becomes clear whether we truly are related to Him or not. When He calls me to inherit—“Come, inherit”—this means that the relatives must come and receive the inheritance. The relatives are those who are Christ’s brethren and, by extension, children of God. Christ is the natural heir; we are fellow heirs. The question then arises automatically: How can an earthly man, a man whose veins carry the blood of Adam, become such an heir? For “from one blood He made every nation.” Is that not what Paul says? We all come from Adam. As for those who say they come from apes, let them go and eat dates. We are speaking here about those of us who come from Adam. Since through one man sin entered the whole world, and I carry Adam’s blood within my veins, how is this possible?
The Kingdom requires a royal child. How can I become a royal child? Behold the fatted calf; behold what Holy Communion accomplishes; behold the true vine. This is why we partake of the Body and Blood of Christ: so that our Adamic blood may be changed and become Christ’s blood, royal blood. This is why Christians are children of the King, princes and princesses. Christians are not counted; they are weighed. A Christian has a different spiritual weight. Can anyone simply produce a number and tell us, “There are this many Christians,” or decide whether someone is good? What counts is your measure in Christ and what blood you carry within you.
Have you undergone this change in your nature? You give Holy Communion to your child so that the child may become a royal child and, if the child dies, may inherit the Kingdom of God. Have you made yourself a royal child? What about your wife, your husband, or your other loved ones? Have they become royal children? Do they receive the Holy Gifts every Sunday and feast day, partaking in the Mystery of the Body and Blood of Christ, so that they may be royal children? Then they will receive an inheritance; they will possess an inheritance. The others will receive nothing, whatever works they may have done. Yet Christ does not want a person to be cold and barren, saying, “I am with Christ, all is well with me, I receive His Body, and that is enough.” Yes, but I also want you to be a person with a compassionate heart and with love. I want you to see the other person and feel compassion for him, to sacrifice yourself for him as I sacrificed Myself, and to give him even out of your own need. I do not want you to be cold and barren, merely believing in Me and receiving Holy Communion. No, He wants both.
He does not ask works from those who are not His own. He asks works from His relatives. Pay attention to the distinction I am making. He does not ask them from just anyone. “Even if I have virginity, or self-restraint, or charitable works, but do not believe,” it stinks in the sight of God and will be judged as unbelief. He asks works from His own relatives, from His children, from Christ’s brethren. He wants them to be generous; otherwise, He will cast them out as well—unless someone dies as the man on the Cross did, without having time to perform works, for there are such cases. But works are absolutely necessary, and He expects them from His own people.
These royal children, then, when they hear, “Come, inherit,” immediately have the title by which they may come forward to receive the inheritance. He did not say, “Come and receive what I owe you because of what you have done.” This detail, this particular turn in Christ’s words, remains important, yet most people do not understand it. You see people who take the bread from their own mouths and give it to someone else. They give away their clothing and are willing to go barefoot and naked. But do not speak to them about the Church or Christ; do not mention confession, Holy Communion, fasting, prayer, or self-restraint. Do not speak of such things. They are called “good people,” but that has nothing to do with it. They are excluded. For if those at the left hand had become those at the right—if they had become heirs—they would have done these works as well.
The verdict shows this: “You are masters of yourselves, and you will go to the place appointed for you, since you did nothing.” For if you had possessed Me within yourselves, you would have had a heart of compassion for your fellow man. When a person receives Holy Communion, even if he receives the smallest particle, he receives the whole Christ. He does not receive merely some of Christ’s Body and Blood; he receives the Body and Blood of Christ—the whole Christ—even though each person receives only a tiny particle. For Christ is divided and distributed, yet never divided in Himself. Why do you receive the whole Christ? So that you may acquire the nous of Christ, a heart of Christ, feet of Christ, and eyes that are Christ’s. Your nature is changed. Have I understood how this happens? Christ brings it about. If, then, you were Mine and had undergone this change, you would also be My relative. The fact that you are so hard-hearted proves that you were not Mine. You have no kinship with Me.
This detail shows us the value of Holy Communion and of worshipping in the Church. It shows how we are changed and become royal children, princes and princesses, so that one day—if we prove worthy to inherit—we too may inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. Christ wants all His own people to be distinguished from others by their compassion for their fellow man. They must feel others’ pain, sympathize with them, deprive themselves for their sake, and place their abilities at the service of others. Do you know what it means to be a Christian? It means placing oneself at the service of another. A Christian who does not place himself, his wallet, his strength, his whole being, and his person at the service of another is not a Christian. This is why Christ requires these things. This is why He requires them. So let us pay attention to this detail. And before I finish...
I want to answer something that many people say and ask about but cannot accept. They view Christ one-sidedly, seeing Him only as love. God is love, but He is also justice. One who is so good must also be just. Why do you want Him to be only love and not also justice? If He is not just, neither does He love. Your thinking is one-sided. He is also just. Yet people do not want the justice of God. Then, the text says, “He will answer them,” and He says: “Depart from Me, you accursed, into the eternal fire.”
They hear “eternal fire” and do not want to hear it. As we said, they always want to speak only on the basis of love—about Paradise, a beautiful life among angels, and so forth. Once, when I happened to be speaking on this subject, someone in the audience attacked me. He said, “Mr. Panagopoulos, I will never accept the kind of God you preach—an angry old man with Hell—even if they put me before a firing squad. And you do a terrible thing by preaching an intolerant God, such a God as this. You speak about Hell.” So I said, “Why are you addressing this complaint to me instead of addressing it to God Himself and to Holy Scripture? God said...”}]} 亘 final ?>Invalid? top system says codex object exactly. Good. But accidental trailing token? I see after JSON `亘 final ?>` in authored? Need ensure final only JSON. That weird is UI internal maybe I typed. Actually final content includes JSON then
To those on His right He says, “Come and inherit the Kingdom.” Why? Did they not prepare themselves to inherit the Kingdom? Those who prepared themselves, who labored and believed, gained the Kingdom, and the Kingdom was given to them. But how can the others, who did none of this, claim any right to it? Is that reasonable? No, it is not. “But you speak about Hell. It is impossible,” someone says, “for God to have made Hell for man.” But when did I tell you that He made Hell for man? Or where does the Gospel say that He made Hell for man? If you pay attention, the Gospel says: “Depart from Me, you cursed.” “Where shall we go, Lord?” “Into the eternal fire.” Was it prepared for us? No. It was “prepared for the devil and his angels.”
For man, God has prepared the Kingdom; for the devil, He has prepared Hell. But if man refuses to labor for the Kingdom, where else can God place him? Is he to go into some third state? He goes into that which was prepared for the devil. The devil told you what to do, and you did it. He showed you the way, and you followed him. You are no different from him. That is how it is. There is also a story that offers an answer related to what I am telling you. Once, a missionary was speaking about judgment and Hell, and a man came forward who disputed what he was saying. “Such a thing is impossible,” he said. “It is unjust. It cannot happen. It simply cannot happen.” He asked the missionary to explain how this could be. In the end, the missionary could not persuade him by argument, so he gave him the following example.
“Do you see the boat passing along this river?” “Yes.” “Do you see the people in it?” “Yes.” “If I told you to go and kill them and take everything they have, who should be judged?” The man had argued that God is unjust because Satan is the leader who leads us astray. Satan, he said, should be judged, while we should not; therefore, God has arranged things wrongly. “So then,” the missionary continued, “if I tell you to go and kill them and take what they have, and you actually go and do it, who should be judged and punished?” The man said nothing. “Tell the truth.” He replied, “Both you, because you told me to do it, and I, because I went and did it.” Christ will do the same. The devil gave the orders, while you and I carried them out. Christ will say, “Depart together, then,” and both will be judged. That is what I wanted to say. Forgive me for the manner and tone in which I have spoken.
This is the most serious of all events, and each person should take it to heart according to his own capacity and in his own way, so that he may be edified. Thank you!
Δεν τον άφησε να το πει αυτό. Άμα σε κάνω μεροκαματιάρη, μίσθιο, να δουλεύεις για να μου... Δεν θα έρθεις στον Παράδεισο. Σε θέλω να γίνεις παιδί μου, να αισθάνεσαι άνετα κοντά μου. Γνωρίζεις ότι όλα αυτά είναι δικά σου. Όταν είσαι μερίδιο κι εσύ, το έχω φτιάξει και εγώ, δηλαδή. Το ’φτιαξες εσύ με τα χέρια σου; Δεν το φτιάχνει ο άνθρωπος. Το φτιάχνω εγώ. Είναι «η ητοιμασμένη», λέει, «από καταβολής κόσμου». Πώς είναι δυνατόν, λοιπόν, ότι το ’φτιαξες εσύ ή το ’φτιαξα εγώ; Εσύ σήμερα γεννήθηκες. Εδώ, λέει, είναι από καταβολής κόσμου η ητοιμασμένη Βασιλεία. Άρα, είναι δώρον δικό του από την αγάπη του προς τον άνθρωπο. Ο καθένας, λοιπόν, πρέπει να οδηγηθεί στη σκέψη: Είμαι συγγενής με τον Θεό και δικαιούμαι τίποτα; Και πώς θα γίνω, αν δεν είμαι; Πώς γίνεται η συγγένεια; Πού θα ξεκινάει; Είμαστε, λέει, συμπεριφέρει. Από πού;
Κατουκάβουρα το ζουμί, πού θα είμαστε συμπεφέρον, πού θα είμαστε συγγενείς; Αναζητείς να βρεις τη συγγένεια και αποδεικνύεται ότι είμαστε συγγενείς ή δεν είμαστε συγγενείς. Όταν με καλεί, λοιπόν, να κληρονομήσω, «δεύτε να κληρονομήσετε», θα πει πρέπει να έρθουν να κληρονομήσουν οι συγγενείς. Συγγενείς είναι όσοι είναι αδελφοί του Χριστού και, κατ’ επέκταση, παιδιά του Θεού. Κληρονόμος ο Χριστός, φυσικός· συγκληρονόμοι. Έρχεται τώρα αυτομάτως το ερώτημα και λέει: Και πώς είναι δυνατόν ο άνθρωπος ο χωματένιος, ο άνθρωπος που μέσα εδώ στις φλέβες του ρέει αίμα από τον Αδάμ; Διότι «εξ ενός αίματος πάντες». Έτσι δεν λέει ο Παύλος; Από τον Αδάμ είμαστε όλοι. Δεν είναι οι άλλοι που έρχονται από τον πίθηκο, ας πάνε να φάνε κουρμάδες. Εδώ για τους άλλους που ερχόμαστε από τον Αδάμ. Πώς είναι δυνατόν, εφόσον δι’ ενός η αμαρτία ήρθε σε όλο τον κόσμο και εγώ μέσα μου εδώ έχω αίμα από τον Αδάμ, στις φλέβες μου; Πώς είναι δυνατόν;
