Summary

The Nicene Creed obliges Christians to confess the resurrection of the dead and the life of the age to come rather than dismissing life beyond the grave. Paradise and Hell begin in the spiritual direction chosen during earthly life, as repentance and communion with God lead toward rest while unrepented sin burdens the soul. The great chasm in the parable shows that the dead cannot freely change their condition or return at will, while its imagery of flame expresses the soul’s spiritual anguish in language humans can understand.

As we were saying, a large number of religious people—or, rather, people who are only somewhat religious—reject life beyond the grave. We often hear them discussing it and saying, “Who has ever gone there and come back? Who can tell us with certainty that there is life beyond the grave?” Of course, since we cannot see what happens beyond the grave, we accompany a person as far as the grave, and there we surrender him.

Our Christ, however, will hold us accountable for this, because, as you know, our Creed says—thank you—“I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the age to come.” Anyone who rejects this article is a heretic. You cannot set your own reasoning against dogmatic truths and reject them. A heretic is anyone who rejects the Creed: that Christ is one, that the Father is one, that Christ was born of a Virgin, that there is life beyond the grave, that there is one Baptism, and that the Holy Spirit is God. If anyone, for one reason or another, questions any of the twelve articles contained in the Creed, that has become heresy. Consequently, the person who

questions life beyond the grave, the resurrection of the dead, eternal life, recompense, and all these things stands on the boundary of heresy. That is why I say that I am not speaking about people who are altogether outside the matter and do not want to hear or discuss any of it. I am speaking about religious people—and such people do exist—who recite with the chanter in the Creed, “I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the age to come. Amen,” but then step outside onto the Church porch and say, “Nicholas, Paradise is right here! Who has ever gone there and returned to tell us there is another life?” With one hand they believe, and with the other they reject. That is why I say that our Christ

has not left us helpless and adrift, with nowhere to take hold, nowhere to draw assurance from, nowhere to stand firm or find shelter, so that we will not be swept away by this opinion and this notion, which is thoroughly heretical—sheer unbelief. He has spoken to us through the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. There He unveils the truth for us; He draws back the curtain. You cannot go beyond the grave? “Then I will pull back the curtain so that you may see that there is life beyond the grave.” And this life beyond the grave

is indeed a life of justice, because here, as you know, there is no justice. That is why we are exhorted, “Learn righteousness, you who dwell upon the earth.” There, justice exists, and a person must know this. When he knows that there is life beyond the grave and that justice reigns there, he can make sense of certain contradictions and injustices that occur in this world. A person must begin with this thought: whether he is rich or poor, whether he holds high office or has no position, whether he is educated or uneducated, healthy or afflicted—all these things come to an end.

They will end one day—perhaps tonight, perhaps tomorrow, perhaps another day. They will end. And if there are injustices, the moment will come when they too will be set right. Everything will be put in its proper place, though not in this world. Sadly, this world will never be like the world beyond the grave. Beyond the grave there is justice. A person is therefore comforted when he settles this within himself. He is comforted. At most, a rich man who acts unjustly and possesses money and property may live ten days, two years, or three years longer. That makes no difference. And if I, a poor man, departed sooner and my fate fulfilled the saying, “Where there is poverty, there is misfortune,” as our folk wisdom puts it,

does that make any difference? The point is that this life will one day end for every one of us, and we will find ourselves in a realm where justice dwells. There the whole scene changes. Influence counts for nothing there; bravado counts for nothing; clever maneuvering counts for nothing; deceit counts for nothing. Nothing of that sort has any power. Everything is judged objectively. Notice what God’s representative said to the Rich Man: “You received your good things, while he received his evil things. Now you are in anguish, and he is comforted.” “But I was above, and he was below. How is it that I am now below and he is above?” That is what you brought upon yourself. Below is where you rightly belonged,

because in this world you were free, you did whatever you wished, and you were on top. But now that you have fallen into the hands of God’s justice, you will go to the true place that you deserve. You will go below, because here God’s justice is at work. In this connection, I would also like to say the following. Our Church has given us some beautiful words with a beautiful meaning. In one hymn about our Christ, she says, “He who has authority over both the dead and the living, for He reigns over death.” He holds both the dead and the living in His two hands. He, therefore, who possesses this authority and reigns over death, administers justice.

He does so both in this world and in the world to come. Christ is not one-sided, as people say. Is He only love? No. Christ is also justice. The difference is that on one foot are written mercy, love, forgiveness, and atonement, while on the other is written justice. He is like a rider, with one foot planted in this life and the other beyond the grave. Here there are mercy, forgiveness, and atonement; there, there is justice. Anyone who does not take care to set his life in order here, before the grave,

that is, anyone who does not make use of Christ’s patient forbearance and goodness, will find himself beyond the grave in the hands of God’s justice. Then he will be brought to a standstill. A sensible person therefore takes care to make good use of this life. Sadly, we pay no attention to this. We fail to consider that one day we will depart and that our condition beyond the grave will correspond to the life we lived on this side of it. Pay attention to this and reflect deeply upon it. Whatever each person prepares here is what he will find there. Hell and Paradise are not simply here, as people say.

Hell begins here, and Paradise also begins here. If death’s camera catches me in metanoia, in Holy Confession, in Holy Communion, and at peace with God and with other people, then the continuation of my life will be Paradise, the Kingdom. But if it catches me unrepentant, burdened with sins, without Confession, without Communion, unreconciled, and so forth, then the continuation will be Hell. Hell is not created there. A person begins to live in Hell here, or finds Paradise here, and his life will continue either in Hell or in Paradise. When a believer dies, he consigns to the grave

That is what each person will receive. God is not to blame. The person is to blame, because he failed to make good use of God’s patient forbearance. “The patience of God leads you to metanoia,” Paul says in Romans. “Did you not know?” Did you not understand or pay attention to the fact that God’s patient forbearance “leads you to metanoia”? It helps us repent. God does not catch us in the very act of sin and cut us off before we have time to repent; He bears with us so that we may repent. Could He not have seized Eve’s hand in the very act? Could He not have caught Cain holding the murderous knife and arrested him? Of course He could. Yet He did not seize them. He allowed them to stand exposed in their Fall and under the rebuke of their conscience, and He helped them toward repentance. But they did not repent. That was their own doing; one thing must not be confused with the other. God, however, gives all of us this opportunity. People ask for proof that life exists beyond the grave and that it is a conscious state. The parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus proves that there is life beyond the grave and that there is a state of existence beyond it.

People are aware there; they are either comforted or in anguish. The exchange between the Rich Man and Abraham clearly proves that people remain conscious, and that they suffer or are comforted according to the life they lived here.

So do not be distressed over your financial condition or your standing in the world. If you can improve it without harming your conscience, your soul, or your spiritual life, whether financially or socially, then do so. But whatever you do must not be at the expense of your soul. Many people push their conscience aside in order to achieve certain things in this world.

That is a mistake. It brings no benefit. Paul says, in effect, “Are you a slave? If you can become free, then do so. But if you cannot, remain where you are; that condition does not condemn you to Hell. You can be saved even as a slave.” This is how a person should think. When he thinks this way, he will be comforted. Injustice exists in the world today, as it always has. When someone is treated unjustly and does not understand, he turns around and says, “Where is God? Why does He allow injustice? Why does He permit this? Why does He permit that?” Then the person becomes confused. And on this particular issue, it was not only we who became confused; great men did as well. Moses questioned God: “Why do the unjust rise to prominence?”

Job complained, “Why do the unjust and ungodly prosper?” David did the same, and so did Jeremiah. Many people in the Old Testament complained to God about the injustices taking place. If they complained, how much more likely are we to do so? But when a person sees that things are restored after death, he is comforted. Of course, a Christian must not truly seek the punishment of another person—of his enemy, for example. He must not ask for that. If, for instance, there is a rich man who shows no compassionate mercy toward us in our need, we must not say, “Ah, you will not get away with this!” We must not say it.

We should always keep the prayer of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr: “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” That man has done me no real harm; he has harmed himself. I, embracing my misery and surrounded by the dogs that came and licked my sores, gained Abraham’s Bosom. Money is not needed to enter Paradise. Lazarus had no money to offer. What he offered was patient endurance, forbearance, love, and sorrow. He owned no estates, though the other man did. What, then, was truly required? Many people believe that if they win the lottery or the football pools, they will

build a Church of Saint Nicholas, commission icons and other things, and thus enter Paradise. They are deluded; Satan is deceiving them.

That is not something that can take you to Paradise. Is Paradise bought in this way? With thoughts such as these, a person is comforted amid the injustice of this world, because he immediately reflects that one day, beyond the grave, he will be vindicated. He is taking his examinations on this side of the grave. This furnace of afflictions and injustices helps him ascend, because it produces patient endurance and makes him humble, among many other things. He comes to understand and says to himself, “Who are you to demand special treatment? Who do you think you are?” Most of us, of course, do not admit this. But if we see the matter properly, we will say, “Not only the things they do to us, not only the things they say to us,

not only what we suffer—we deserve still more; we ought to have suffered more.” That is how a person should speak. When he sees the matter in this way, he always remains on the right path and will never suffer spiritual harm. One evening, during an all-night vigil, Moses the Ethiopian was tested in the following way. The other priests had agreed to criticize him loudly enough for him to hear. “Do we have this man with us tonight? Why did you invite him to join us at the vigil?” They added several other mocking remarks. He heard them but said nothing. He went out through the back door of the sanctuary and left.

They had placed other people nearby to hear how he would react—what he would grumble, what he would say. And what do you think he said? Did he curse them? Did he accuse them? No. He said to himself, “You black dog, Moses”—because he was Black—“you black dog, Moses, what business have you among human beings?” He called the others human beings, but did not consider himself one. “What business have you among human beings? They treated you as they should, you black dog, Moses. Now go back to your cell.” Then they sent someone after him, picked him up bodily, and brought him back inside. They had done all this to see how this man regarded temptations and trials. But to us, of course, such things sound like fairy tales. We say, “Do you know who I am? I have monks under me, this bishop is my patron, and my father was a general”—and all manner of nonsense. None of that has anything to do with the matter.

A person who is deeply humble never speaks against another. That poor Lazarus waited for even a crumb while the rich man feasted upstairs every night with his friends and companions. When the breeze blew toward him and carried down the smell of the meat they were roasting above, what might he have said? “May it stick in your throats!” He could have said that and a thousand other things that come so easily to us. But he said nothing—nothing at all. He died before the Rich Man; that is indeed what happened. He could endure no longer. But notice this: the municipal cart did not come to take him away. The angels, Scripture says, took him and carried him above. The other man, because he lived comfortably and had doctors and every available means, died later; but he was taken below. “He died,” it says, “and was buried.” At once we find consolation in knowing that justice exists.

There is justice, though it is not acting now. God’s justice does not act in its fullness today. We may leave this world having suffered injustice materially, personally, and through the words of others. Do not be troubled; vindication is near. Many receive justice even here—God grants some to receive it here—but not everyone does. Most people close their eyes and depart this life still wronged. Yet their record goes before them, and each person will be assigned the proper place accordingly. This is the justice of God, in which we must believe. In the Church, God’s justice is symbolized by the axe of the Holy Forerunner, lying there at the root of the tree. That is the justice of God. But, as you know, an axe—

if someone is to cut with it, he must first take it in his hand. John said then that the One coming after him would take it and cleanse His threshing floor. But what happened? The Lord did not come then to cleanse the threshing floor. Rather, they tried to do away with the Lord Himself. Two thousand years have passed, and the threshing floor has still not been cleansed. The axe remains there: the justice of God. But a time will come when He will take it in His hand and cleanse both those who have departed this world and those who remain here unprepared, when Christ comes to judge the living and the dead. Many people, however, demand justice for others. Yet if God acts with strict justice toward others now, He must act in the same way toward us. Are we without sin?

We demand it! We ask God to cut out someone’s tongue, strike out his eyes, do this to him, do that to him. But what if He does the same to you? God’s justice will not operate only against that man; it will operate against you as well. What will happen then? David understood this very well and said, “If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” In other words, if You take pencil and paper and record everything about each person—this sin and that one, the tongue, the eyes, the flesh, one thing after another—who, he asks, could stand before You? We would be finished. That is why we always ask for mercy: “Be merciful, O Lord.” And that is why I told you one evening: do not demand strictness. Do not demand it. If you can fulfill something, then do it. But elsewhere you too will fall short, and there you will need economia, repentance, and the mercy of God. Will you stand by your own righteousness? Never. If you cannot live by such strictness in everything, do not demand it from others. That is why Ecclesiastes—though I do not know whether you have read it—

says with emphasis, “Do not be overly righteous.” Is that a sin? Do not demand exacting perfection from another person. To do so is a sin. Are you yourself going to fulfill everything with such exactness? Do you?

And even if you fulfill this particular thing, do you not fail in something else? Learn to acknowledge the other person’s weakness. He says, “I cannot do it.” Very well; struggle as much as you can. Ask God to help you do all that you can. Let us not be exacting toward others. We demand satisfaction and insist that others fulfill everything to the letter, while we are lenient with ourselves. So I repeat: when you see injustices, do not be scandalized. God has His plan, and do not forget that many of us—

are paying old debts that we owe. We should have paid them long ago and did not, so God now permits us to enter into temptation, permits us to suffer material loss, permits one thing after another. Do you understand? This world, then, has a final curtain. One day it will fall, and we will find ourselves in the other world, whether we want to or not. There, in the other world, justice exists. Everyone will be assigned his proper place. Connections will count for nothing; sentiment will count for nothing; cunning tricks will count for nothing. Nothing will. No false witnesses will be called, either for the defense or for the prosecution. There will be only your angel and your devil.

They will place you where you belong. When Satan comes holding his ledgers—“He did this, he did that, and this other thing secretly, away from his wife, her husband, her spouse, and everyone else”—when he comes with his scrolls and records in hand, what will the Lord say to him? Will He tell him a lie? Will we be able to say, “You are unjust; you are wronging me”? Did we commit those things or not? Are they mine or are they not? How will you approach the judgment? Have you seen the Last Judgment painted in church narthexes? When the moment comes for each person to be weighed, the regiments of demons arrive loaded with white scrolls, ready to place them on the scales and claim the soul. Those scrolls bear our sins. When a person has not confessed them, Satan keeps them in his hand and will come to place them on the scales tomorrow.

He will make the scales sink on his side, seize the soul, and cast it into the mouth of that great beast. We ourselves are responsible. These things must be brought to light, and our holy Church, which possesses the Spirit of God, repeats these accounts every year, as you have seen. Those of us who did not heed them last year or the year before should heed them this year. Those who have done nothing should begin to do something. Those who have done something should do still more, completing what is lacking and acquiring a sound understanding of what takes place both in this world and in the world to come. Christ, then, is the One who came from there to us, went from here back there, and now awaits us—

“having become the Forerunner for us,” as Paul says in the final verse of the sixth chapter of Hebrews. He told us plainly: beyond the grave there is life; it is a conscious state, and each person will receive according to the way he walked in this world. In general, He tells us that there is Paradise, Abraham’s Bosom, repose and rest, but also anguish. “I am in anguish in this flame,” he says—in perfectly plain Greek, “in this flame.” His torment is so severe that he is content merely to ask Lazarus to dip his finger in water. Do you understand how much a finger can carry in such a case? Only what can cling to one finger. Do you understand what this means?

Did he say, “Send him to bring me a bucket of water,” as we would put it, or a pitcher, a jar, or even a glass of water? No. He asked him to dip his finger—to dip means to immerse, as in Baptism—and even if Lazarus set out from there toward him, that finger would dry before he arrived. What water could it bring? What does this teach you? Can you understand how painful his state is? Abraham, however, did not yield. He reminded him that things there are not as they were for him below. There everything is different. Lazarus is comforted, and you are in anguish. The situation is reversed.

In this world, you were the powerful one, and you were the one who enjoyed comfort. Now the whole scene has changed. No one wants you.

And that is not all, Abraham says. There is something else. Even if I could set aside this justice—that you must receive according to what you fashioned in this world with your own hands—and even if I wished to set it aside, I could not. “Between us and you a great chasm has been fixed,” so that even if we wished to cross over to you, we could not; and even if you wished to come over to us, you could not. The door to that place closes. And people ask:

Where do the departed go? Can they see one another there, and what do they do? Why are you so concerned to know? So that you can take your slippers with you? So that you can set your mind at ease? Why does it matter to you whether they see one another or not, whether they do this or that? Read what is written here and see.

What matters is that it is a conscious state. The person knows; the person feels; the person remains a person. Why, then, must the fire be material? Fire does not burn the soul; sin burns the soul. It is the burden of the conscience that weighs down the soul. Since the human being there is spirit, he will suffer spiritually, not materially. Scripture speaks of it in human terms so that we may understand approximately what it is like. Since we are still material human beings, it speaks to us in material language so that we can understand. Elsewhere it speaks of “fire and brimstone.” Is that ordinary fire? Do you need matches to light it? What exactly do these expressions mean, and what is that reality?

Even if someone went there, saw it, and returned here, he still could not describe it. Spiritual realities cannot be expressed in material language. What did Paul say? What does John write? “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” That is, a person cannot comprehend with his eyes, his heart, or his ears what God has prepared. Paul says, “I went as far as the third heaven and heard ineffable words which I cannot express in human language.” What can anyone say? Lazarus remained in the tomb for four days. He tasted death—

and bodily dissolution. “He has been dead four days.” He stank; his body had begun to decay. His eyes had closed, and his bodily members were breaking down. Yet he returned, in any event, just as we too will return one day, whether we want to or not. What did Lazarus say? What did he tell us about what exists beyond the grave? Nothing. Matters beyond the grave cannot be put into words. That he encountered darkness is certain. But Lazarus, the friend of God, encountered darkness? Did he go to Hell? Why, did Paradise exist before Christ was crucified? Paradise was not yet open. Everyone went down to Hades. After Christ’s descent into Hades, the separation was made, and we speak of Hell and Paradise. Before that, everyone went to the same realm: Abraham, the Holy Forerunner, all of them went down to Hades.

That is why Christ went down into Hades, “even to the innermost chambers of Hades.” What did you see, Lazarus? What can you tell us, dear soul? Not even a smile. Lazarus lived another thirty-three years, became a bishop, came to Cyprus, and so forth. Yet he never laughed and never said anything about it. And not only that. If you wish, read the Triodion for Lazarus Saturday—the passage in the small print—and it asks:

Did he ever eat anything?

What could possibly have sweetened his mouth? He must have carried the bitterness of Hades back with him. So no one has told us what happens beyond the grave. But it is clear that life exists there. Christ proclaims this life: there is life beyond the grave, and people are separated according to how each one has lived. Therefore, He says, after death no one can simply do whatever he wishes.

He says, “We cannot cross from there to you, and you cannot cross from here to us.” And now a question arises in my mind: if Abraham says that souls cannot go wherever they wish, how is it that they supposedly come to the séance, to the medium, and we speak with our mother and father? That is what I would like to know. Otherwise Abraham must be lying; he must be a false witness. No, the souls do not come. And secondly, who would remain in Hell if he could leave and go wherever he wished? We all see this and understand it, yet we do not grasp it as we should. And look how many souls go to those satanic haunts to speak with their dead and supposedly receive comfort. It is Satan who assumes that role and speaks.

He speaks with the voice of the mother, the brother, the father, the spouse, the child, and so forth. He knows the person’s manner of speech, plays the part, so to speak, and deceives us. Abraham says, “You cannot do such a thing.” Now another issue arises. The Protestants and the Jehovah’s Witnesses tell us—though on the basis of this passage they themselves acknowledge no life at all beyond the grave—when they want to attack us Orthodox: “Since the soul cannot move from the place to which it went after death, why do you hold memorial services and let the priests take your money? Why do you meddle with a condition that is already settled? They have gone where they have gone. Do you not understand that you are being deceived?”

We do not understand this correctly—that one cannot cross from there and another cannot cross from here. Up to a point we believe it, and then our love grows cold. Yet this very matter, as Abraham presents it, creates the need for memorial services in the Church. Abraham says that a person cannot, of his own power, go from there to here or from here to there. Of his own power. The one who wishes to cross from there cannot do so, nor can the other cross from here. Very well, then: what a person cannot do by himself, can it not be done by Him who holds the human soul in His hand? That is the point, and this is where the deception lies.

This passage supports us, yet they turn it against us, and because we do not understand, we simply stare at them in bewilderment. My dear friend, it supports us precisely because the soul cannot leave or improve its condition by itself. We entreat Him who has authority over it, as I said earlier, “He who has authority over both the dead and the living,” to judge that person with mercy, to improve his condition, and to grant him some relief until the Second Coming. That is precisely why this is necessary.

Here I would like you to understand another aspect of the matter. How is help given to a soul beyond the grave? How does that help reach it? Through the Church. Many people give material things in order to help our departed. Indeed, we see this becoming fashionable today. Many write in the newspapers: “Instead of a memorial service, one thousand drachmas, five hundred, or five thousand have been donated to an old people’s home, an orphanage, or somewhere else, in memory of my mother, my child, or my husband.” Instead of a memorial service. This is a satanic device.

It wrongs the soul even beyond the grave, because Satan, in his malice, seeks vengeance upon the soul until the Second Coming. In this way a person harms the departed as well, preventing what could have reached them through the Church and the faithful. For the account of every departed person remains open and may change for better or worse until the Second Coming. At the Second Coming, all further transactions will cease. Whatever is found then is what will be judged.

Until the Second Coming, we can even bring a person out of Hell. Apart from the accounts we read, I know today of two cases on the Holy Mountain in which people were brought out of Hell. What the fathers did, however, we do not know. Yesterday I went to the Foundation, gave two talks, and have now come directly here to give this one. This morning I was in the Church, inside the sanctuary, behind the priest as he celebrated the Proskomedia, and I commemorated my own people, my friends, my enemies—everyone whose name I could mention while he performed the sacred service. Yet I did not see a single prosphoron.

Not one of those who attended church brought even a slip of paper with names. And today the departed of that region were not fed. For the table set upon Orthodox altars is not only for the living; it is also for the departed whose names are commemorated at the Proskomedia. So, when I spoke during the Communion hymn, I had the opportunity to tell them what consequences awaited them if they did not change their ways. Of course, they will understand this only when they die and go there, while their daughters and children here fail to take prosphoron to the Church. They do not bring that little slip of paper so that the priest may commemorate them, saying, “Mary, Constantine, Nicholas, Katina, George, Demetrios,” and so forth, and may remove a particle, saying, “Remember them, O Lord.”

That particle is removed in the morning so that the priest may later place it into the Blood of the Lamb. The departed person thereby receives Communion indirectly. We receive Communion directly; he receives it indirectly. People do not know this, and so they do not do it. They harm themselves because they show no love, and they harm their loved ones through ignorance or indifference. I take this opportunity to tell you that these things which the Orthodox Church possesses are not accidental customs. If you are not Orthodox, you have no Church, no prosphoron from which the priest can remove a particle for you after death. You have nothing; you wait for help from some so-called church of this world. The only Church that can care for the faithful beyond the grave, until the end of the age, is the Orthodox Church.

There the departed are commemorated. We take our prosphoron to the Church with our slip of names and our small offering, or we hold other memorial services and invite people to pray together with us for someone. I spoke to you about this the day before yesterday, if you remember. Today the Divine Liturgy was celebrated downstairs at that Foundation, together with a memorial service for its founders, the Varimbobiotis couple, Panayiotis and Irene. And I told you: wherever you may be, if you cannot send their names here, commemorate them there. I commemorated them where I was; I said, “Panayiotis and Irene.” I presented them there at that altar. And so today those souls partook of the Body and Blood of Christ, because they were remembered upon an Orthodox Holy Table.

There the Church triumphant and the Church militant are united. Great is the blessing upon the hands that prepare a prosphoron and take it to the Church. Great is the blessing upon the hands that write down names and take them to the priest, so that he may read them, remove their particles, and commemorate them. The accounts remain open until the end of the age. For some, the balance increases toward the good; for others, further charges are added toward evil and a worse condition. Some people have departed and died after living in this world in such a way that their teachings and writings, which they left behind, continue to destroy souls. For every soul destroyed by them, another stone is hung around their neck, and they sink still deeper. But there are also those who became the cause of people being saved here, who in turn helped others to be saved, and so on.

People may read their writings or remember their exhortations and homilies. All this is credited to them and added to their account. Today we read John Chrysostom, our soul opens, and we return to the right path. We read Isaac the Syrian, Ephraim, Symeon the New Theologian, Gregory, Basil, and the Fathers. Every person who believes and turns back through them is credited to their name, and their account grows. The meaning is profound, but we can understand it. The Church refuses to pray only for a heretic. For everyone else—even those we would call serious offenders who have departed this life—the sacrifice brings benefit. This is not a matter of collecting money. It is not an invention of clergy for their own profit, as some claim.

You write in the newspaper, “Instead of a memorial service”—away with Christ, away with the Church, away with the priest—“I will send a thousand drachmas in memory of my mother.” Can you tell me where your mother lives now? Can you tell me her condition? Do you have her address? Tell me, where does your mother live? Where would you send the money? You gave it to the elderly to deliver, but what will they say? They will say, “May God forgive her.” They will turn to God in order to reach her. Where is your mother? Where did you send it? An elderly person may indeed pray, and God may hear him. But if you yourself do not believe, how will this happen? The money will have been given in vain, and your mother will receive nothing. The One who knows everyone’s address is Christ. Suppose I am at the battlefront. If I leave my post,

they will put me against the wall and shoot me. I cannot leave. On pain of death, I cannot leave. But if my captain is petitioned, if someone writes to him from here, if the general is pressed and told, “Give Panagopoulos five days’ leave; bring him a little farther back,” then an order arrives saying, “Move Panagopoulos to the rear for ten days, so that he can take off his puttees and his boots.” I cannot leave by myself, but that superior officer has brought me farther back and improved my position. Even someone under a heavy sentence receives benefit, provided only that he is not a heretic. What, then, becomes of someone after he has departed this life? I do not know what his condition is. Your husband is in prison. Your child is in prison. You yourselves may be prisoners. One person brings him two blankets, another brings two packets of cigarettes, and another brings him a warm meal.

What does that do for him in prison? It makes his confinement more bearable. It brings him a little comfort in his imprisonment. Instead of sleeping on concrete or having no warm plate of food, he can eat a sweet that someone has brought him. He remains in prison, but he is relieved and comforted. That is what happens: his confinement is made more bearable. Only offerings for a heretic are not accepted. This is not an invention. I want to dwell on this point. What financial interest could there be in memorial services and all the other things done for our departed? If you open the ancient Divine Liturgy of Saint James, you will see it written there. Did that man of the apostolic age have some financial motive?

What profit could there have been, when no material offerings were involved? Yet it contains commemorations for the departed. If you take the Divine Liturgy of Basil the Great, it contains commemorations for the departed. If you take the Divine Liturgy of John Chrysostom, it too contains commemorations for the departed, and prayers for the departed as well. And let me tell you something striking that concerns us directly. Some say, “He was a holy man. Whether you hold a memorial service for him or not, he was a holy man.” First of all, we do not know whether he was holy. We know only the outward appearance. God alone knows whether that person is bound by something. On that day we shall see people whom we regarded as saints, yet who had prepared a special Hell for themselves. We do not know. May he indeed be holy! It costs you nothing to pray for him. But if he is not, what then? And so they say that

these things are unnecessary and were invented by men. My dear man, after Christ our God, who became man through our Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), has there ever been a greater human being? Is there any human being holier than our Most Holy Theotokos? There is not. Well, do you know what happens? Do you know that at every Divine Liturgy a particle is removed even for the Most Holy Theotokos? What does the priest mean when he says, “Especially for our Most Holy, pure, most blessed and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary”? Do you know what that is? Open the service book and look at what has already taken place. You will see that the priest has before him, upon the diskos, the bread, and beside it the Holy Chalice containing the wine.

The priest says, “Thine own of Thine own,” and so forth, and the choir outside begins to chant, “We praise Thee, we bless Thee,” and the rest. The priest, with his hands crossed, prays there and says to God the Father: “Send down Thy Holy Spirit upon us and upon these Gifts here offered, and make this bread the precious Body of Thy Christ, and that which is in this cup the precious Blood of Thy Christ, changing them by Thy Holy Spirit.” Amen, amen, amen. Why does He make these things so? “That they may be to those who partake for nepsis of soul and spirit, for the remission of sins,”

“and for communion of the Holy Spirit.” According to Basil the Great, those who receive Holy Communion—who partake of these Gifts now changed—receive twenty-three graces. When the priest completes this prayer, he continues: “Again we offer unto Thee this rational and bloodless worship for the prophets, Apostles, ascetics, monks, nuns, and every righteous spirit made perfect in faith.” He says these words quietly. Then he exclaims aloud, “Especially for our Most Holy, pure, most blessed and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary.” He has mentioned all the others, and then says, “Especially for...”

This sacrifice, this spiritual sacrifice, is offered even for the Most Holy Theotokos, the Virgin. Good heavens! It is offered for the Most Holy Theotokos, the Virgin? Yes. Then where does that leave me? Where do I stand? What must be done for me? What must be done for my father, my mother, and everyone else? Indeed, it is offered even for the Most Holy Theotokos, the Virgin—the spotless, undefiled, and immaculate one.

Where, then, must we turn?

These texts of the Church themselves urge us and tell us where to turn. Unfortunately, however, we do not grasp these things as fully as we should. The divine John Chrysostom says:

Thank you.

“What then? God has given us ways to be saved; only let us not be negligent.” He says that God has given many ways by which both we and others may be saved; only let us not be negligent—let us not neglect them. Today, tomorrow, and every day, if possible, let our loved ones be commemorated, and let a particle be taken out for them there at the Holy Communion. Elsewhere he also says: “Knowing these things, therefore, let us devise as many means of consolation as we can for those who have departed.” Now that we know these things, he says, let us do whatever we can for those who have departed—instead of tears, instead of lamentations—

instead of monuments. Do you put up a fine marble monument and think that this has brought your mother into Paradise? Or, if you weep every day and bring bouquets, do you think you are helping her soul? No. You may do these things because you acknowledge that something is here within the grave, something that belongs to Christ. Do them, but the soul receives no benefit from them. Therefore, instead of monuments, tears, and lamentations, offer alms, prayers, and offerings, so that both they and we may obtain the good things that have been promised. For it is not only the souls for whom we do these things that are benefited; we too are benefited when, out of love, we help these people. Many say, “In Hades there is neither confession nor metanoia—repentance.” Are you telling me that now? There is no repentance there, is that it? Where, then, is repentance possible?

There is no way there to perform works worthy of repentance. For the sins were not committed by the soul alone, which is now in Hades; the body committed them together with the soul. And now you have laid the body here in the earth. The two must be reunited in order to ask forgiveness and fulfill the canon, the rule of prayer. But because they have been separated and dissolved into the elements from which they were formed, we who are still here now pray that those souls may be helped. So leave aside the tears, he says; leave aside the incense, the fine marble monuments, and the lamentations. Instead, give alms to people who can say, “My God, forgive them”; offer prayers and offerings in the Church, and so forth, so that they may be benefited and we too may receive the promised blessings, because we are acting out of love.

για να κόψει κάποιος, πρέπει να το πάρει στο χέρι του. Ο Ιωάννης τότε είχε πει ότι έρχεται πίσω εκείνος που θα πάρει, λέει, και θα καθαρίσει τα αλώνια. Τι είπατε; Δεν ήρθε ο Κύριος τότε για να καθαρίσει τα αλώνια. Τον καθαρίσανε μάλλον τον Κύριο και λοιπά. Και έπειτα από δυο χιλιάδες χρόνια φτάσαμε, ακόμη δεν καθαρίστηκε το αλώνι. Και μένει το τσεκούρι εκεί, η δικαιοσύνη του Θεού. Θα έρθει όμως κάποτε, θα την πάρει στο χέρι και θα καθαρίσει και εκείνους που έχουν φύγει του κόσμου τούτου και εκείνους που θα υπάρχουν εδώ ατακτοποίητοι, όταν ο Χριστός θα έρθει κρίναι ζώντας και νεκρούς. Πολλοί ζητάνε δικαιοσύνη για τους άλλους όμως. Γιατί, αν ο Θεός ενεργεί ως δικαιοσύνη τώρα για τους άλλους, πρέπει να ενεργήσει και για μας. Είμαστε αναμάρτητοι εμείς;

δι' εξάρσεώς του, ξέρετε τι λέγει; «Μη γίνεσθε πολύ δίκαιοι». Αμαρτία αυτό; Εσύ μη ζητάς ακρίβεια από τον άλλον. Είναι αμαρτία. Έτσι θα το κάνεις εσύ; Το κάνεις;

«ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν πρόδρομος γενόμενος», όπως λέγει ο Παύλος στους Εβραίους, στο έκτο κεφάλαιο, στο τελευταίο του εδάφιο. Αυτός μας μίλησε ότι, κύριοι, πέραν του τάφου υπάρχει ζωή, είναι κατάσταση, και ο καθένας θα απολαύσει κατ' αναλογίαν που επορεύθη στον κόσμο τούτο. Αυτό μας αναφέρει γενικά: ότι είναι Παράδεισος, κόλποι Αβραάμ, ανάπαυση, ξεκούραση, και ότι είναι και οδύνη. «Ἐν τῇ φλογὶ ταύτῃ», λέγει, «ἐν τῇ φλογὶ ταύτῃ», ελληνικότατα, «ἐν τῇ φλογὶ ταύτῃ», οδυνώμαι. Και τόσο σοβαρό, όπου συμφωνεί με απλώς να βάψει το δάχτυλό του. Καταλαβαίνετε τι μπορεί να μεταφέρει εν προκειμένω; Μπορεί να μεταφέρει ένα δάχτυλο. Καταλαβαίνετε τι γίνεται;

Εκείνο που είναι, είναι ότι είναι κατάσταση. Ο άνθρωπος γνωρίζει, ο άνθρωπος αισθάνεται, ο άνθρωπος, ο άνθρωπος, ο άνθρωπος. Άρα, γιατί να είναι υλική φωτιά; Η φωτιά δεν καίει την ψυχή, η αμαρτία καίει την ψυχή. Η επιβάρυνση της συνειδήσεως είναι εκείνη που βαρύνει την ψυχή. Εφόσον είναι πνεύμα ο άνθρωπος από εκεί, πνευματικώς θα οδυνάται, όχι υλικώς. Το λέγει όμως ανθρωποπαθώς, να καταλάβουμε εμείς περίπου πώς είναι. Εφόσον είμαστε υλικοί ακόμη άνθρωποι, θα μας μιλήσουν με υλική γλώσσα για να καταλάβουμε. «Πῦρ καὶ θεῖον», λέει για αλλού. Έχει φωτιά από τις συνηθισμένες; Χρειάζονται σπίρτα να βάλεις εκεί; Τι δηλαδή, πώς εκφραζόμαστε και τι είναι αυτό;

Έφαγε τίποτα ποτέ;

Στη φυλακή, τι σου κάνει τώρα; Σου κάνει τι; Ανετοτέραν την ειρκτήν. Σου κάνει λίγο παρηγορημένη τη φυλακή σου. Από το να κοιμάσαι στο τσιμέντο, από το να μην μπορείς να φας ένα πιατάκι ζεστό φαγητό, από το να μπορείς να φας ένα γλυκό, το φέρνει άλλος. Είσαι φυλακή, αλλά σε ανακουφίζει, σε παρηγορεί. Αυτό γίνεται. Του κάνει ανετοτέραν την ειρκτήν. Μόνο του αιρετικού δεν τα δέχεται. Δεν είναι επινόηση. Θέλω να σταθώ στο σημείο αυτό. Τα μνημόσυνα και όλα αυτά τα πράγματα που γίνονται για τους πεθαμένους μας, τι συμφέρον; Αν ανοίξετε την πρώτη λειτουργία του Ιακώβου, σου λέει, είχε κανένα λόγο αποστολικός άνθρωπος;

Πού πρέπει να πάμε;

Αντί μνημείων. Φτιάξεις καλό μάρμαρο και έχεις τη γνώμη ότι πήγε η μάνα στον Παράδεισο; Ή αν κλαις κάθε μέρα, ανθοδέσμες, έχεις τη γνώμη ότι βοηθάς ψυχικά; Όχι. Κάντε αυτά τα πράγματα, γιατί παραδέχεστε ότι εδώ μέσα κάτι είναι, μια περιουσία του Χριστού. Κάντε τα, αλλά η ψυχή δεν ωφελείται τίποτα. Αντί λοιπόν μνημείων, αντί δακρύων, αντί θρήνων, τας ελεημοσύνας, τας ευχάς, τας προσφοράς, ίνα κακείνοι και ημείς τύχωμεν των επηγγελμένων αγαθών. Διότι δεν ωφελούνται μόνο οι ψυχές εκείνες για τις οποίες το κάνουμε αυτό, ωφελούμεθα και εμείς που από αγάπη τους ανθρώπους αυτούς βοηθάμε. Λένε πολλοί: «Εν τω Άδη», λέει, «ούτε εξομολόγηση ούτε μετάνοια». Λες εμένα τώρα; Δεν υπάρχει μετάνοια, έτσι; Πού υπάρχει μετάνοια;
