Summary
Death and the grave are not humanity’s end, because Jesus Christ promises the universal resurrection of every person. Revelation, Jude, Daniel, and Christ’s teaching in Matthew describe the Last Judgment, when all the dead stand before God and the books, including the Book of Life, are opened. Ezekiel’s vision of the dry bones portrays bodily resurrection as God reassembling each person’s body and restoring the soul so that the complete human being lives again.

Our subject this evening will be related in some way to yesterday’s and the day before yesterday’s. Unfortunately, the subject cannot be exhausted. Once you become involved with the dead, there is no end to it.
What I would like to speak about tonight is the final end of those who have fallen asleep—the final end of the dead. And I think this is necessary, because many people believe that once a person has died, that is it; the matter is over. As we have said, they ask, “Who has ever gone there and come back to tell us whether there is life afterward?” and so on. But the matter does not end there. It does not end when a person dies. There is more to come, and what remains is precisely what consoles us and gives us courage, so to speak.
Someone may ask, “Does a person need courage to die?” Yes, it takes courage to die. And each person will die, whether he wants to or not, because death is a cup that God Himself drank when He became man. The Mother who gave birth to Him also drank it. It is impossible for us not to drink it. But what is consoling, encouraging, and good, as we might say, is that one day man will rise again. Man knows this. I do not know why he does not want to believe it or accept it. Is it not good? Of course it is good. Why, then, does he refuse to accept it? Yet a large proportion of people do not accept it.
Even among us there are people who doubt their own resurrection, although in a partial sense they have risen many times during their lives. Someone will say, “But I have never died.” Really? When you sleep, do you not die? Are you fully alive then? Why, then, do people lament over you? Death is a Mystery and must be approached as a Mystery. How many times has the sun seemed to die? How many times have we died in winter, only to come alive again in spring? If a person examined all the things around him that speak to him of the Resurrection, he would form a very different impression.
Of course, man passes through Great and Holy Friday in order to reach the Resurrection. The Resurrection does not precede death; it follows death. I would like to think that many of us come from rural parts of our homeland. But I have not experienced spring here, so I do not know how this world comes to life here. There are flowers called anemones, or poppies as we call them in our homeland. Take one in your hand and look at it. Do you know what you will see? As it opens out, with its red petals around it, look inside and you will find a black Byzantine cross.
It is like those equal-armed Byzantine crosses displayed at pharmacies in our homeland, not the kind with one arm longer than the others. Inside is a most beautifully formed, pitch-black cross, surrounded on the outside by the joyful red of the Resurrection. The flower teaches man, and indeed it appears around Pascha, during these very days, proclaiming: first the Cross and then the Resurrection; first death and then the Resurrection. My dear friends, death is not the end, and the grave is not the end. It is the beginning of another life. You may ask what that life depends upon. It depends upon our Christ, who has given us this joy and this hope of the Resurrection. Yet it also depends upon us. It depends upon us whether our Resurrection will be joyful
or whether it will not be joyful, because whether we want it or not, we shall rise again. God does not have to ask anyone’s permission. What depends upon us is what we shall rise to: eternal and immortal life with Christ, or eternal Hell. That is the question, and that depends upon us. God says, “I will raise you. Do you want to rise clothed in white and to be with Me for eternity? Then live in this world as I tell you. You do not want that? I will still raise you, but you will be with the other one. I will not be to blame; you will. I undertake to raise you, but you must do what depends upon you.”
He did the same with Lazarus, as we said one evening. You cannot raise him; I will raise him. You can unbind his hands; you must do that. So you will contribute what lies within your power, and I will contribute what lies within Mine. Christ asks for cooperation with man so that man may attain his goal. Unfortunately, many of us, at least for the present, do not want any of this. As for the resurrection of man and his re-creation: although the human body decomposes in the earth, as we see when we exhume our loved ones, we find relics there—that is, bones and fragments of bone, as we call them.
For certain reasons, some are found incorrupt, but the rest we find decomposed, with only their bones remaining. We wash the bones, hold a memorial service, and care for them in hope. What hope? The hope that they will be needed one day; yes, needed one day. Of course, there are people who do not know the details and try to dismiss these things with rational arguments. They say, “Very well, we gathered the bones of your father and mine. But where will we find the remains of my brother, who was eaten by fish after a shipwreck, during a war, or in an accident? Or the remains of my child, who was eaten by lions? Will they not rise?” Those remains are not required. Yet this is the question people have raised concerning all these matters down to the present day.
Now that we have split the atom, scientists tell us that matter merely changes form; it is not lost. The particles of our loved ones’ remains still exist, and our own will also exist, even if we meet some fate other than the natural course of being buried and exhumed one day. Nothing is lost. Christ has already told us these things, but we pretend not to know. We shall read what He said. If someone reads the particular passage in the Apocalypse that speaks about these matters... Thank you.
All people will come forth, and each will receive what belongs to him. Here it says: “The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and each was judged according to his faith and his works.” The sea gave them up, and so did the grave. Naturally, each place holds some of the dead within it, but all will be summoned to surrender them. If a person also wished to consult the Church, he should open the Triodion and turn to the first Soul Saturday, because the Church holds two annual memorial services for all who have fallen asleep, from Adam down to the very day on which the memorial is celebrated.
This is done whether or not their relatives hold a memorial for them, whether or not they have relatives, and whether their relatives are believers or unbelievers. The Church, like a spiritual mother, observes two Soul Saturdays. The first is on the eve of the Gospel reading of the Judgment, before Great Lent, and the second is before Pentecost. There is also a third commemoration on the Saturday of Saint Theodore, though it is not prescribed in the same way; the faithful also offer memorials then. The texts for these days describe the ways in which people depart from this world. And the explanation printed in black in the Synaxarion of the day tells how we shall rise again, based upon the texts found in the Old Testament and the New Testament.
Someone may ask, “So this matter is found in the New Testament?” Yes, it is, and it is connected with the Old Testament. My dear friends, the resurrection of man is connected with judgment. Because a person is in no condition to endure examination, since his record is stained, he also rejects the resurrection, which necessarily entails that examination. Then he sleeps peacefully, when he ought to be at least a little uneasy. This is a most serious reality; that is why it is a dogma. Anyone who rejects the Resurrection of the dead is a heretic. Thank you.
There is an epistle consisting of only one chapter, so it takes little effort to read. It is called the Epistle of Jude, and it comes just before the Apocalypse. It says that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, saw the Judgment. Judgment presupposes resurrection. The dead stood up; they rose and were reassembled—and I shall tell you how—in order to be judged. The Epistle of Jude says that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, saw the Judgment and saw a great multitude. Listen to how it puts this; we were reading it in verse fourteen.
“Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied concerning these, saying: ‘Behold, the Lord came.’” Did He come alone? No. “With His holy myriads”—with countless thousands of saints. Why did He come? “To execute judgment.” What does that mean? To judge. “Against all”—to judge everyone. “And to convict all the ungodly,” because the righteous do not come into judgment. The righteous person does not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. He will appear before the tribunal, but not in order to be judged. He will appear to receive his reward and his crown, and then to proceed to the place prepared for him in the Kingdom of God
from the foundation of the world. Thus, it says, He came in order to judge and to convict... and against the works of God, against the Providence of God, against the Gospel of God, and against the Church of God. He comes, it says, to convict all these people. And to whom did He first reveal this? To Enoch, the seventh from Adam. If you open Genesis to the fifth chapter, you will find his place in the genealogy. He lived for 365 years.
He was taken away and remains alive to this day. Enoch is alive to this day, just as the Prophet Elijah is alive to this day. They will appear on the stage once again to fulfill the role Christ has appointed for them in the events of faith. Their end is described in the eleventh chapter of the Apocalypse. If you have it, look there, where it speaks of His two witnesses. They will come in the days of the Antichrist. This, then, is the most serious event. Yet because it is connected with judgment and necessarily entails judgment, man—as I repeat—is not pleased with it. He does not want to be judged because his record is stained. For precisely this reason, he rejects the whole matter outright and sleeps
peacefully, I repeat, when he ought to be uneasy. Besides what Christ said in the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew—the passage read during the week of Meatfare, concerning the day of Judgment, beginning at verse thirty-one—and besides His division of people into different groups, this detail is also found in the writings of Daniel, specifically in the seventh chapter. There, as throughout Holy Scripture, it is shown clearly how Christ will come to judge the world.
I shall read the following from Daniel, chapter seven: “I beheld”—that is, I was watching—“until thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took His seat. His garment was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a flame of fire, and its wheels were burning fire. A river of fire flowed before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. The court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.” At that moment the people had risen—countless myriads upon myriads.
The books were opened so that the people might be judged. In the passage from the Apocalypse that I read to you rather quickly, we hear the following. Daniel saw these things on behalf of mankind eight hundred years before Christ. Eight hundred years later, John also saw this: “And I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose face the earth and heaven fled away.” From whose face? Whose face? The face of Him who sat upon the white throne. The earth and heaven fled away. Where did they go? Back to where they had been before they came into being. Do not make yourself a king.
That is where it was before it came into being. I made it; I brought it out of My storehouse, and it returned to where it had been before it was made. “And no place was found for it.” It vanished. “And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened,” just as Daniel had said, “and another book was opened, which is the Book of Life.” Another book was opened, he says, called the Book of Life. Do you know what the Book of Life is, and who are enrolled in it? Do you know? Those who have been baptized.
The whole world is recorded generally in the books of God, but those who have been baptized are also recorded separately in a book called the Book of Life. If, on the eighth day after our child is born, we bring the child to receive a name, according to the order of the Church—even though this is not generally observed today—there is a prayer in that service asking Christ to preserve the child from all harm until the fortieth day, when the mother has also been purified, so that the child may be baptized and enrolled in the Book of Life. Our devout parents enrolled us in the Book of Life: they had us baptized.
Some of us complain: “Did anyone ask me why I was baptized?” Then wash it off! What did they do to you—make you white? Well then, wash it off. They bathed you so many times when you were little, and they gave you one more warm bath. What was so terrible about that? Who is holding you back, if you want to leave? “Did my father ask me why they baptized me?” What did your godfather say? “Do you renounce Satan and unite yourself to Christ?” Then turn around and say, “I renounce Christ and unite myself to Satan.” I have not made a mistake here. But your devout parent did this for you and enrolled you in the Book of Life. Do you now want to go and erase your name? That is your affair. Blessed are those who, in the end, are found
still written in the Book of Life. For when a person sins, when he completely disregards what his godfather or godmother said on the day of his Baptism, it is as though he himself goes and declares, “I do not want to be enrolled there.” But here John says in the Apocalypse, in chapter twenty, from verse ten onward, that besides the general book of the world, another, special book was opened, called the Book of Life. Take care, then, to enroll your little children in this Book of Life from the very day they are born, if possible. For if—God forbid—in some way…
Just as there is bodily death, there is also spiritual death. An account will be demanded before God, because when a child departs unbaptized, someone has killed that child in cold blood and sends it, as it were, wrapped up and consigned to Hell. Those who cast the child away, with the help of doctors or by other means, will meet that child one day. The child will say: “Mother, you were a murderess in every sense. Why did you not give birth to me, have me baptized, and then kill me, so that at least I might go to Paradise? Why did you close Paradise to me? Why did you bind me?” It is a grave and delicate matter for a human being to depart this life unbaptized. And I recall—and I hope there is no one here among us—
that in all the Canons of the Church, no Father, no Apostle, not even Christ Himself, has said what is to become of those who cause souls to be lost in Hell—whether it is the mother, another killer, or anyone else. Let me tell you of an incident I remember. Many of you may come from the region of Patras and may know that there was a priest there named Father Gervasios Paraskevopoulos, a holy man, whose relics had not yet been exhumed. And remember this: there is a very great likelihood—ninety-five percent, in my judgment—that we shall one day venerate him as a Saint, just as we venerate Saint Nektarios of Aegina and others. He possessed great holiness. On one occasion, then,
he heard the confession of an unbeliever. This man had been an unbeliever for many years and was also a hunter. When at last he came to himself, with the help of some other brethren, he went to confess to Father Gervasios. Among other things, he told him that he had committed a killing. He had gone hunting on a Sunday morning, and in a reed bed he thought he saw some game and fired his gun, but he killed a woman. And that woman was pregnant. When Father Gervasios heard this, he stopped, not knowing how to proceed.
“Will I be forgiven?” the man asked him. “I do not know,” he replied. “Go away and return in fifteen days.” The man left crushed, while the elder added prayer upon prayer and fast upon fast, beseeching Christ to show him how to deal with this sheep who had been placed in his hands. Fifteen days passed, and he had received no answer. On the fifteenth day, only a few minutes before the man was due to knock at his door and ask what would become of him and his confession, an angel of the Lord came and told him: “For the killing, apply the ruling of Basil the Great.”
That is, what Basil the Great prescribed for those who commit murder: impose that canon, that rule of prayer, upon him. As for the child, the matter will remain in the hands of our Lord until the day of Judgment. Do you understand? Can you imagine standing face to face with Christ and being judged on that day? “It was through negligence,” someone may say. He should have gone to Church on Sunday morning, and then the killing through negligence would not have happened. Nothing is ever left without consequences; every deed always has its trailing thread, another hidden aspect. And Christ wants to uncover that thread and bring it to light. It is a grave matter, I tell you, concerning blasphemy and concerning the dead infant—the little child who dies, whether the mother casts it away, kills it, or I do not know what else, whether a doctor does it, by an injection…
Laws have been enacted concerning these things, but no one expects what lies ahead: Christ Himself will deal with them personally. Here it says, “Both the small and the great were raised.” “I saw,” he says, “the great and the small standing before the throne.” The whole human race will be there. There are no little angels there. There are Saints, yes, but no little angels. That is why I told you the other day, when I was speaking about memorial services: do not forget to write on your commemoration lists the names of the babies and little children who were baptized. The unbaptized are not written there; they belong among those whose names cannot be recorded. But write down the baptized, even though, being little children, they committed no deliberate sins. They still bear ancestral sin and are in need of
Holy Communion, which takes place at the moment—as I told you yesterday—when the priest places into the Holy Chalice those little particles representing the souls and the names for which we came to the Church.
So, I repeat as I continue, this is not some ordinary matter. It is a unique and unrepeatable reality, about which a person must know rightly and act rightly, so that he may not suffer loss but be benefited. Whether we want it or not, one day we shall be raised and become complete human beings again. This is what shocks many people. Do you not want to become a human being again? Did God not create human beings? Did He not give them flesh? Did He not give them a soul? Even though they fell among robbers, as we said in the parable of the Good Samaritan, He came and died, and He restores man as a complete human being. He dies for man’s sake and makes him whole again.
Man’s death—not because God originally willed it—is a gift. Man himself brought about the first death, the separation of his soul from God. The second death, the one for which we dress in black, weep, and beat our breasts, is a gift from God. Do you know what the prayer at the departure of the soul says? Why did God permit this second death? “So that evil may not become eternal,” it says. Otherwise, we would remain forever with cancer, tuberculosis, crippled, blind, and deformed. He casts us all into the furnace and makes us new. Have you seen a foundry, where they gather all the scrap iron and old metal, carry it in, and bring out new iron? If human beings can do this, why should Christ not do it? The Resurrection is real.
The Church reminds us of it every year. Every Great Friday, the Church reads us a passage from the Old Testament, specifically from the Prophet Ezekiel, chapter thirty-seven, at the very moment when the Epitaphios returns from the procession. Those of you who have Holy Week service books, which you hold as you follow the services of the Passion, should open them at home and calmly read this prophecy of Ezekiel. It was written seven hundred years before Christ, for our sake, and tells us
what is to take place concerning the Resurrection. Listen to what it says: “The hand of the Lord came upon me.” The hand of God seized me, Ezekiel says. “And the Lord brought me out in the Spirit and set me down in the midst of the plain.” God took me by the hand, lifted me up, and brought me to a vast plain. “And this plain was full of human bones.” It was filled with bones, with human remains. “And He led me all around them.”
He took me through that vast plain, and I saw them close at hand. “And behold, there were very many upon the face of the plain, and they were exceedingly dry”—utterly dried out. “And He said to me,” turning to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” What do you think, He asks him—can these bones come to life? Dry bones: according to human reason and human science, how could they live? “And I said, ‘O Lord God, You know these things.’” You know; what do I know? A beautiful answer, a humble answer. We think we know everything. We answer every question and pour out foolishness as well. What do I know? he says. You know, Lord. You know, Lord, what You intend to do. God can bring life even from stones and bones, from nothing at all. How did He make us? Had someone placed an order for us to be made? He brought us from non-being into being. “And He said to me, ‘Prophesy.’” Speak not only to the bones, but so that the whole world may learn. Speak to them. “Prophesy over these bones and say to them.” Speak to them. The bones are to hear; the bones are to hear! What shall I say to them? “Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.” Listen, dry bones, to what the Lord will tell you, to what God will tell you.
The Lord says: “Thus says the Lord to these bones: Behold, take heed, I, the Lord, shall bring upon you the breath of life.” I shall bring you to life. “And I shall put sinews upon you”—sinews upon the bones; notice, this is creation—“and I shall bring flesh upon you, cover you with skin, and put My breath within you; and you shall live and know that I am the Lord.” Sinews will be placed upon those bones, joining and binding them together; flesh will fill them out; they will be covered with skin; and then the spirit will enter, and they will rise again.
Whether you want it or not, this is exactly how the human being will be created anew. This is what the Lord says to you, O bones; listen. “So I prophesied as He commanded me.” I said what He told me to say. I stood there and preached a sermon to the dry bones. “And as I prophesied”—at the very moment when I was speaking to the bones the words the Lord had given me—“behold, there was an earthquake.” An earthquake came and shook everything, as we shake a watch or some object containing loose pieces. “Behold, there was an earthquake, and the bones came together, each one to its proper place.”
Every bone went to its own place. A foot did not go onto a back, nor did a hand go onto my wife’s head, nor did one of my bones go to someone else. Each one went to its proper place, do you understand? Skeletons were formed from the bones; creation had begun. Then it continues: “And I looked”—I was watching what happened before me—“and behold, sinews were upon them.” The sinews began to appear. The skeleton had been formed, and then I saw the sinews entering it. “And flesh grew upon them,” and each person’s body began to be filled out with flesh.
Skin spread over them, and they were clothed with skin. “But there was no spirit in them.” What do we have at this point? Adam before God breathed into him and made him a living soul: a body lying there without the soul within it. This concerns us, because the human being is neither the body alone nor the soul alone. The human being is both together. The soul is the human spirit, the soul of the person. The body without the soul is the person’s relic, as we said one evening. A relic is what remains.
The two together, one within the other, make up the human being: a human soul and a human body; the two together are the human being. So far, then, we began with the dry bones. The bones were joined together, filled out, and were covered with skin and so forth, but as yet there is no spirit within them. Let us continue. “And He said to me, ‘Prophesy to the spirit; prophesy, son of man.’” Do you want the spirit to come as well, so that they do not remain lying there merely as bodies, merely as human remains? You want the spirit to come too. And He says: “Thus says the Lord: From the four winds,” from the four points of the horizon, “come”—that is, from wherever in the whole world it may be, come—
“and breathe upon these dead,” just as He breathed into Adam, made him a living soul, and gave him life. Come to these as well, “that they may live,” and they will rise to their feet. “So I prophesied,” doing just as He had told me, and without delay, “as He commanded me,” just as He had ordered me, “and the spirit entered into them.” Their souls entered them once more, “and they lived and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great assembly.” He could not count those whom he saw before him. “And the Lord spoke to me, saying, ‘Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel.’” They represent the whole world.
The descendants of Jacob are here. And they say: “Our bones have become dry, our hope has perished, and we are utterly lost.” Dry bones—and now you speak to me of life, of the Resurrection, and so forth. This is what they say, He tells us. “Therefore prophesy and say to them”—tell them, so that they may know—“Thus says the Lord: Behold, I will open your graves and bring you up from your graves, and I will lead you into the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your tombs and bring My people up from their graves.” The Lord truly is Lord. Christ opened graves.
He says: “Behold, I open graves, and then you will know that I am the Lord.” He opened graves. The Jehovah’s Witnesses deny the divinity of Jesus. They say He is not Lord, but a servant. Yet how, then, does He open graves? “When you see Me opening graves,” He says, “know that I am the Lord.” Did Christ open graves or did He not? And did He not also leave His own tomb open? Among all the so-called founders of religions, their tombs remain closed and hold them within. But the tomb did not hold Jesus Christ; death did not hold Him. Read the magnificent passage in which John Chrysostom mocks the grave, death, and their power, in his Catechetical Homily on the night of the Resurrection.
Most of us, unfortunately, take our candles and leave, going home for the Easter soup. Why should we remain behind to celebrate the Resurrection? Why remain to hear these texts, through which the Saints of God help us understand the depth of our faith? And so, my beloved, when God has spoken from the foundation of the world, saying that the Resurrection will take place, that we shall become complete human beings again, and that we shall live again in new heavens and a new earth where righteousness dwells—do you know that this earth will pass away? Do you know that the sea will be no more? What reason would Christ have to deceive us? I read from the Apocalypse, chapter 21, verse 1: “And I saw a new heaven”—new in the fullest sense—
“and a new earth”—truly new—“for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.” It was also said earlier: “The earth and heaven fled from His face, and no place was found for them.” Therefore, whatever a person makes in this world, he should know that he is making something like the little make-believe games we played as children. No matter what it is, however large, costly, or impressive, one day we would kick it aside and leave. This is what awaits the entire world. We are not permanent inhabitants of the earth. Even our theologians wrongly conform themselves to this world and tell us that we are its inhabitants. We are only tenants of the earth.
We are tenants of the earth, and whenever He wills, He serves us notice of eviction. “I want My property back,” He says. Everything we possess is given for use. Every good thing that exists is for nourishment, not indulgence. Yet we indulge ourselves and seek pleasure, and that is not right. We must always have a sober and proper fear—and by fear I mean reverence—the proper reverence before the order Christ has established for all these things. We created nothing. We brought nothing from our mother’s womb, nor shall we take anything with us when we depart from this world.
He brought us here. A law established by Him brought us here. We did not come because we ourselves wished it. No one owes his existence here to himself. He owes it to the love of God, the providence of God, and the law of God. If you wish to read about this, even parents themselves can accomplish nothing unless God places His hand upon it. Read the eleventh chapter of Zechariah in the Old Testament and see how the child is formed within the womb, and how the spirit, the soul, is given at the moment of conception by God. God has established this law, and He governs everything in His own way. He gives an account to no one, nor will He ever give an account to anyone.
We shall give an account to Him, whether we want to or not. The matter of death is of the utmost seriousness, and so is the matter of the Resurrection. Death is deliverance for the human being. Death is a good thing for the human being. And remember my words. I may have died before you when your own turn comes to pay the debt of death that you owe. When you leave your body, you will not want to enter it again. No matter how much your children weep and cling to your remains and your deathbed, you will say, “Away—keep going away,” when you look back and see a carcass, this body of yours that today you pamper at countless beauty institutes, having it shaped and fashioned.
“Away—keep going away,” you will say to your angel. That is how it will be. And if you do not believe what I am telling you, pray beforehand that Christ will show you your death. Then you will acknowledge that what I am telling you now is true. You will acknowledge that what I am telling you now is true. These things we are discussing are not morbid. The greatest philosophy and the greatest theology concern death and the Resurrection, because “of His Kingdom there shall be no end.” Human beings will shine with radiance, and we shall live together with God. Only then shall we understand what this is all about, what it was that God created. Then we shall thank Him from the depths of our hearts. Here we do not thank Him from our hearts. We grumble against Him, if we do not blaspheme Him or even insult Him.
Forgive me for speaking this way. But this is the tone I want to use, to emphasize these fundamental truths, because, as you know, they are questioned today. Indeed, people question whether they even have a soul, whether there is anything within them at all. They seem to think there might be some sort of possession inside them, but they refuse to admit that they have a soul. But is it not good to have a soul? Is it not good to live eternally? They do not want it. This is a perversion, in the fullest sense of the word. Yet they can see that they have created nothing by themselves. Everything they possess comes from God: knowledge, light, taste, sensation, and intellect. They created none of it themselves. Neither did their mother or father. All these things are His gifts; someone else gave them. Yet they refuse to acknowledge that Someone and heap accusations upon Him, blaming Him for all these things.
They deny Him and align themselves with someone else. One might understand such things from people who have not lived in the light in which we Greeks have lived from the cradle, the light in which we Orthodox Christians have lived from the first days our eyes opened, like little chicks seeing the sunlight fill our rooms. Let them do this, I say; I can excuse them, for those people have not seen. But we have tasted. We know the power of our faith. We know the power of our true faith from the countless miracles that have occurred until this day and continue to occur every day. Nearly every Greek—not merely every family, but every individual Greek—has experienced
miracles in his life. He has seen his God; many times he has seen the invisible hand of God. But he interprets it differently. He calls it luck or coincidence. “How lucky he was!” Really? Was it luck that protected him, rather than the providence of God? Does luck even exist? What is luck? What is fate? These ideas belong to idolatry. None of them exists. There is Christ, God, and hope. Outside these three there is nothing—nothing at all. I remember being corrected forty years ago by a blind man in Piraeus. His name was Uncle Dionysis. He was blind and sold lottery tickets, carrying them in his hand while feeling his way along with his cane.
I remember stopping him once at the port of Piraeus and saying, “Uncle Dionysis, let me buy a lucky one,” referring to the lottery tickets he carried. I saw him move the tickets behind his back with his cane. Uncle Dionysis stood still and said to me: “I cannot see you with my physical eyes, but I see you with my spiritual eyes. I can tell that you are an educated man and understand many things. Allow me, from my experience, to tell you that luck does not exist.” I was dumbfounded, because at the time I knew only of luck—great luck, incredible luck, and all our other false notions. “What does exist, Uncle Dionysis?” “Faith.”
“Hope exists, my child. Luck does not. If you believe in luck, I will not sell you a lottery ticket, even though this is how I earn bread for myself and my wife. If you believe what I have told you, then I will give you one.” And that is how it is; that is how it was, and that is how it remains. Luck does not exist. Everything is under the providence of God, even though God sometimes enlists the devil himself to help us. I shall move to another point, because I will leave many people with an unanswered question if I do not address it. Many people, relying on luck, play the football pools as we do, buy lottery tickets and bonds, and engage in other things in the hope of winning. We bet at the racetrack and so forth, hoping that luck will speak to us. And sometimes we see money reaching certain people through these satanic means. It is not that God could not have provided it in some other way when there was a genuine need, but He condescends to human weakness. I remember an incident that took place on the Holy Mountain. Among the shops there was a kiosk run by a family man with six or seven children—six girls, I think, and one boy—and most of the girls were of marriageable age.
He also had lottery tickets. The agency in Athens required him to take them. “What am I supposed to do with lottery tickets on the Holy Mountain?” he would ask, but they forced him to accept them. You know how this cartel, this corruption of the world, forces kiosk owners to stock obscene magazines, lottery tickets, and whatever else the satanic mind of man devises. If a foreign visitor happened to pass through, they would offer them. So what happened? At the weekend, the man went out to his village, planning to return on the first boat Monday morning for his week’s work. When he reached home, his wife told him, “The schoolteacher has asked for the hand of our eldest daughter.”
“What did you tell him, wife?” “I told him that you would be coming.” “I let him understand that we were favorable to the match. He is a schoolteacher; for him to come to our house is a great honor.” “Yes, but did you discuss what he expects from us?” “He is asking for one hundred thousand,” she said. “Has he no shame? Does he not know that this land does not produce even a hundred kernels of corn, much less a hundred thousand drachmas? Is he not ashamed to come and ask this of us? If he told us that we have an honorable and virtuous child and that he wanted to take her as his wife, I could understand it. But to demand something that would crush us for a million years—I cannot understand that. He is not a good man, wife.” But the lady rebelled, because the schoolteacher was supposedly doing her family a great honor, and she would have a schoolteacher as a son-in-law, and so forth. She tormented the poor man until he finally managed to leave on Monday.
Deeply grieved, the man returned to the Holy Mountain. He took a large candle, went to Saint Nicholas, lit it before him, and said: “Saint Nicholas, you who take orphans and widows under your care and help them not to perish in this world, help this orphan of mine too. She is an orphan, you see, because I am unable to help her. Help her.” The poor man wept there in his cell for quite some time, and then went to sleep. The next morning, the drawing was held in Athens for the lottery tickets he still had left. He had not sold them, yet they had been charged to him and he was required to pay for them. And among those unsold tickets was the winning ticket for one hundred thousand drachmas.
He went and entreated Saint Nicholas, and Saint Nicholas gave him the money in this way. What am I to say? In any event, know that luck does not exist, even though Christ sometimes enlists Satan himself to help us. But this is a side branch of our discussion and of the subject as a whole. The point is this, my beloved: whether we believe it or not, whether we want it or not, one day we shall rise again. What depends upon us is how we shall rise—as doves or as ravens. That is our responsibility. Let us take care to settle it here and now. And this is freely given: metanoia, repentance; Holy Confession; and Holy Communion. No money is needed for any of this. Only humility is needed; the ego must step aside. We shall fall, and we shall rise again. To fall is human; to persist in the fall is satanic. There are people who hold on to their sins for many years.
But why, my good man, do you hold on to them like that? Are they foreign currency? What are you waiting for?

κρατούν τις αμαρτίες. Και τι, κύριε, έτσι τις κρατάς; Συνάλλαγμα είναι; Τι το περιμένεις;
