Summary

Death is not humanity’s end, because Jesus Christ promises the universal resurrection and offers courage through the hope of eternal life. Scripture teaches that the sea, death, and Hades will surrender their dead, who will stand before God and be judged according to their faith and deeds. Ezekiel’s valley of dry bones depicts God restoring bones, sinews, flesh, skin, and spirit, showing that the complete human person—body and soul—will be raised anew.

Our subject this evening will be related in some way to yesterday’s and the day before yesterday’s. For mysterious reasons, the subject is not announced beforehand. When one speaks about the departed, the subject is never exhausted.

What I would like to speak about tonight is what ultimately becomes of the departed—what becomes of the dead. I think this is necessary, because many people believe that when someone dies, that is it; the whole matter is over. And, as we said, they ask, “Who has ever gone there and returned to tell us whether there is life, and what else there may be?” But the matter does not end there. It does not end when a person dies. There is more to come, and it is this that comforts us and gives us courage, we might say.

A person must die. Someone may ask, “Does it take courage to die?” Does it not take courage to die? You will die whether you want to or not, because death is a cup that God Himself drank when He became man, and the Mother who gave birth to Him drank it as well. We should not expect to be exempt from drinking it. But what is comforting, encouraging, and good, we might say, is that one day the human person will rise again. We know this. I do not know why people do not want to believe it or accept it. Is it not something good? Of course it is. Why, then, do so many people refuse to accept it, as seems to be the case?

Even among us there are people who doubt their own resurrection, although in a certain sense they have risen many times during their lives. Someone will say, “But I have never died.” Really? When you sleep, do you not die? Are you fully alive? Why, then, do people lament over you as though you were dead? Death is a mystery, and it must be approached as a mystery. How many times has the sun seemed to die and disappear? How many times have we died in winter, only to come alive again in spring? If a person examined the many things all around him that speak of the Resurrection, he would see matters differently. Certainly, a person must pass through Great Friday in order to reach the Resurrection. The Resurrection does not come before death; it follows death. I would like to think that many of us come from rural parts of our homeland. I do not know how things grow here, because I have not lived here, but there are flowers called anemones—or poppies, as we call them in our homeland. Take one in your hand and look at it carefully. What will you see? Do you know? When you open its red petals and look inside, you will find a black Byzantine cross.

It is like the equal-armed Byzantine crosses used by pharmacies in our homeland, where all four arms are the same length. There, within the flower, is a beautifully formed, pitch-black cross, clothed on the outside in red—the joyful, resurrectional color. The flower teaches us, and it even blooms around Pascha, during these very days, proclaiming: first the Cross and then the Resurrection; first death and then resurrection. My beloved, death is not the end, nor is the grave the end. It is the beginning of another life. You may ask what that life depends upon. It depends upon our Christ, who has given us this joy and this hope of the Resurrection. Yet it also depends upon us. It depends upon us whether our resurrection will be joyful

or not, because whether we want it or not, we shall rise. God will not ask anyone’s permission. What depends upon us is what we shall rise to: eternal and immortal life with Christ, or eternal Hell. That is the question, and that depends upon us. God says, “I shall raise you. Do you want to rise clothed in white and to be with Me for eternity? Then live in this world as I command you. You do not want that? I shall still raise you, but you will be with the other one. You will not be able to blame Me; you yourself will be responsible. I undertake to raise you, but you must do what depends upon you.” It is like what He did with Lazarus, as we said one evening: “You cannot raise him; I shall raise him. But you can unbind his hands, and that you must do.”

So, you will contribute what belongs to you, and I shall contribute what belongs to Me. Christ asks for cooperation between Himself and the human person so that the person may attain salvation. Unfortunately, many of us, even now, do not want these things. As for the resurrection and the re-creation of the human person: although the body decomposes in the earth—as we see when the remains of our loved ones are exhumed—we find relics there, that is, bones, as we call them, and some earth.

There are some whom we find incorrupt for particular reasons, but the others we find decomposed. We gather their bones, wash them, hold a memorial service, and care for them with hope. What hope? The hope that one day these bones will be needed. One day they will be needed. Of course, there are people who do not know the details and try to dismiss all this with rational arguments. They say, “Very well, we gathered the bones of your father and mine. But what about my brother, whose body was eaten by fish after a shipwreck, during a war, or in an accident? What about my child, who was eaten by lions? Where will those remains be found? Will that person not rise?” Such objections are unnecessary, because even science, which until recently opposed all these things, now tells us otherwise.

Now that we have split the atom, scientists tell us that matter merely changes form; it is not lost. The particles of our loved ones’ remains still exist, just as the particles of our own bodies will continue to exist if we meet some fate other than the natural course of being buried and exhumed one day. Nothing is lost. Christ has already told us these things, but we pretend not to know. Someone may say, “We shall read about it.” If a person reads the particular passage in the Apocalypse that speaks about these things,

he will find there that all people will come forth, and each one will receive what belongs to him.

Here it says: “The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and each one was judged according to their faith and their works.” The sea gave them up, and naturally the grave did too. Whatever each one holds within itself, all will be summoned to surrender. If a person also wished to consult the Church, he should open the Triodion and turn to the first Soul Saturday. The Church holds two annual memorial services for all the departed, from Adam until the very day on which the memorial is celebrated, whether or not their relatives hold services for them, and whether or not they have any relatives at all.

Whether their relatives are unbelievers or believers, the Church, acting on her own as a spiritual mother, observes two Soul Saturdays. The first is on the eve of the Gospel reading concerning the Last Judgment, before Great Lent, and the second is before Pentecost. There is also a third commemoration on the Saturday of Saint Theodore, although this one is not prescribed; offerings may be made then, and some of the faithful do so. The texts for these days describe the different ways in which people depart from this world. The explanation printed in black in the Synaxarion of the day also tells how we shall rise again, on the basis of texts found in the Old and New Testaments. Someone may ask, “So this matter is also found

in the New Testament?” Yes, it is, and it is connected with the Old Testament. My beloved, the resurrection of the human person is connected with judgment. Because people cannot bear to be called to account, since their record is stained, they also reject the resurrection that necessarily entails judgment, and so they sleep peacefully. Yet they ought to be at least a little uneasy. This is the most serious event of all. That is why it is a dogma of the faith, and anyone who rejects the resurrection of the dead is a heretic. If I were to open for you a certain epistle, which consists of only

one chapter and requires little effort to read, you would find this there. It is called the Epistle of Jude, and it comes just before the Apocalypse. It says that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, saw the Judgment. And Judgment presupposes resurrection.

The dead arose; they were raised and reassembled—and I shall tell you how—in order to stand for judgment. Here in the Epistle of Jude, it says that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, saw the Judgment and saw a great multitude. Listen to how it is expressed. I shall read verse fourteen.

“Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied concerning these people, saying, ‘Behold, the Lord came with His holy myriads’”—with tens of thousands of saints. Why did He come? “To execute judgment upon all,” to judge everyone, “and to convict all the ungodly.” For the righteous “do not come into judgment.” The righteous person “does not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” He will appear before the tribunal, but not in order to be condemned. He will appear to receive his reward, to receive his crown, and to proceed to the place prepared for him, which is the

Kingdom of God prepared from the foundation of the world. Thus, it says, He came “to execute judgment and to convict all the ungodly of all the deeds of ungodliness that they have committed,” and also of “all the harsh things”—because many of us speak harsh words—“which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.” They have spoken against God, against the works of God, against the providence of God, against the Gospel of God, and against the Church of God. He comes, it says, to call all these people to account. And to whom was this first revealed? To Enoch, the seventh from Adam. If you open Genesis, chapter five, you will find Enoch’s place in the genealogy.

Enoch lived for 365 years, was taken away, and remains alive to this day. Enoch lives to this day, just as the Prophet Elijah lives to this day. They will appear again upon the stage of history to fulfill the role Christ has appointed for them in matters of faith. Their end is described in chapter eleven of the Apocalypse. If you look there, where it speaks about His two witnesses, you will see that they will come in the days of the Antichrist. This, then, is the most serious event. Yet because it is connected with judgment and necessarily entails judgment, and because, I repeat, people are unwilling to be judged—their records being stained—for precisely this reason,

they reject the whole matter outright and, I repeat, sleep peacefully, when they ought to be uneasy. Besides what Christ said in chapter twenty-five of Matthew—the passage read on the Sunday of Meatfare, the day devoted to the Last Judgment, from verse thirty-six onward, where He separates people into different groups—this detail is also found in the writings of Daniel, specifically in chapter seven. There it is shown clearly, just as Orthodox iconography also depicts it:

Christ will come to judge the world. I read the following from Daniel 7:9: “I watched”—that is, I saw—“until thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took His seat. His garment was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like wool,” like pure wool. “His throne was a flame of fire, and its wheels were burning fire. A river of fire flowed before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. The court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.” One moment.

The people rose, myriads upon myriads, and the books were opened so that they might be judged. In the passage from the Apocalypse that I read to you rather quickly, we read the following. Daniel saw these things on behalf of humanity eight hundred years before Christ. Then, eight hundred years later, John also saw this: “And I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose face the earth and heaven fled away.” From whose face? From the face of Him who sat upon the white throne. So the earth and heaven fled away. Where did they go?

Back to where they were before they came into being. Do not bring human reasoning into it. Where were they before they came into being? Did I make them? Did I take them out of my storeroom? They returned to where they were before they came into being. “And no place was found for them.” They vanished. “And I saw the dead, great and small”—I saw them—“standing before the throne, and books were opened,” just as Daniel had said, “and another book was opened, which is the Book of Life.” Another book was also opened, he says, called the Book of Life. Do you know what is called the Book of Life?

Do you know who are enrolled in the Book of Life? The baptized. The whole world is recorded generally in the books of God, but the baptized are recorded separately in a book called the Book of Life. If, eight days after our child is born, we take the child to receive a name, according to the order of the Church—even though this is not generally observed today—there is a prayer in that service asking Christ to preserve the child from all harm until the fortieth day, when the mother has also been purified, so that the child may be baptized and enrolled in the Book of Life. How devout our parents were!

They enrolled us in the Book of Life; they had us baptized. Many of us complain: “Did they ask me why I should be baptized?” Then undo your Baptism, if you think they harmed you! Listen to that—undo your Baptism! They gave you so many baths when you were little, and they gave you one warm bath as well. That was all the trouble involved. Why does it offend you? Who is forcing you, that you demand an account from your father? “Did he ask me why they were baptizing me?” Then erase yourself from God’s register; destroy what your godfather did when he turned you away from the ranks of Satan and toward the ranks of Christ. You may turn back yourself; leave the ranks of Christ and join the ranks of Satan. Your father did you no wrong at all. Your devout parent did this for you.

He enrolled you in the Book of Life. You will find your name there; even now it is there. It is yours.

This concerns those who remain enrolled in the Book of Life to the end. For when a person sins, when he treats with contempt what his godfather or godmother declared on the day of his Baptism, it is as though he goes there himself and says, “I do not want to be enrolled in that book.” But here John says in the twentieth chapter of the Apocalypse, from verse ten onward, “And another book was opened.” Besides the general book of the world, another, special book was opened, called the Book of Life. Take care to enroll your little children in this Book of Life from the very day they are born, if possible. For if—God forbid—something prevents them and they do not live long enough to be baptized, woe to us.

Such things never cease to weigh upon our necks, because just as there is bodily death, there is also spiritual death, and in this matter God will demand an account. For when a child departs unbaptized, someone has killed that child in cold blood and sends it, all wrapped up, to Hell. Those who cast the child away with the help of doctors or by other means will meet that child one day. It will say: “Where were you, Mother? You were a murderess either way. Why did you not give birth to me, have me baptized, and then kill me, so that at least I might go to Paradise? Why did you close Paradise to me? Why did you bind me?” It is a grave and delicate matter for a human being to depart this life unbaptized.

I remember something. Consider that among all the Canons of the Church, no Father, no Apostle, nor even Christ Himself has said what will happen to those who cause souls to be lost in Hell, whether it is a mother, another murderer, or anyone else. Let me tell you an incident I remember. Many of you may be from the region of Patras and may know that there was a priest there named Father Gervasios Paraskevopoulos, a holy man whose relics had not yet been exhumed. And remember this: in my judgment there is a ninety-five percent likelihood that we shall one day venerate him as a Saint, just as we venerate Saint Nektarios and the others. His holiness was great!

Once he heard the confession of an unbeliever, a man who had been without faith for many years and who was also a hunter. When at last he came to himself with the help of some other brethren and went to confess to Father Gervasios, among his other sins he said that he had also committed a killing. He had gone hunting on a Sunday morning and, seeing movement in a reed bed and thinking it was game, he fired and killed a woman. That woman was pregnant. When Father Gervasios heard this, he stopped, not knowing how to proceed.

“Will I be forgiven?” the man asked. “I do not know,” he replied. “Go away and return in fifteen days.” The man departed, deeply troubled, while the elder added prayer upon prayer and fast upon fast, beseeching our Christ to show him how to give absolution to this sheep who had been sent into his hands. Fifteen days passed, and he had received no answer. On the fifteenth day, only a few minutes before the man was due to knock at his door and ask what would become of him and his confession, an Angel of the Lord came and told him: “For the killing, you will apply the rule laid down by Basil the Great.”

Whatever Basil the Great prescribed for murderers, that canon, that rule of repentance, you will give him. As for the child, the matter will remain in the hands of our Lord until the day of the Last Judgment. Do you understand what it will mean to stand face-to-face with Christ and be judged on that day? “It happened through negligence,” someone may say. He should have gone to Church on Sunday morning, and then the killing through negligence would not have happened. Nothing is without consequence; everything always carries its consequences behind it. And Christ wants both zeal and suffering from us so that this stain may be removed. It is a grave matter, I tell you, whether we are speaking of blasphemy or of a dead infant—the little child who dies because the mother casts it away, kills it, uses a doctor to do it, or employs some other means.

Laws have been passed concerning such things, because people never expect these consequences, yet Christ Himself will deal with them personally. Here it says: “Both the small and the great rose.” “I saw them,” he says; “I saw the great and the small standing before the throne.” The whole world was there. There are no little angels among them. Saints, yes—but not little angels. That is why I told you the day before yesterday, when I spoke about memorial services, not to forget to write the babies and little children who were baptized on your lists of names. The unbaptized are not entered; they remain among those not recorded. Write down the baptized, even though they committed no deliberate sins because they were little. They still bear ancestral sin and stand in need

of Holy Communion, which takes place at the moment—as I told you yesterday—when the priest places into the Holy Chalice those small particles representing the souls and the names for whom we came to the Church. So this is not, I repeat, a simple matter. It is a matter of unique importance, about which a person must know rightly and act rightly, so that he may not cause harm but may be edified. Whether we want it or not, therefore, one day we shall rise and become complete human beings again. This is what shocks many people. Do you not want to become a human being again? Did God not create human beings? Did He not give them flesh? Did He not give them a soul?

And if they fell among thieves, as we said in the parable of the Good Samaritan, He came, died, and restored them as human beings once more. He dies for the sake of humanity and makes man whole again. Man had to die—not because God brought death upon him; death is a gift.

The first death, the separation of his soul from God, was brought about by man himself. The second death—the death for which we dress in black, weep, and beat our breasts—is a gift from God. Do you know what the prayer for one at the point of death says about why God permitted this second death? “So that evil may not become eternal.” Otherwise we would remain forever with cancer, tuberculosis, crippled limbs, blindness, and every other deformity.

He casts us all into the furnace and makes us new. Have you seen a blast furnace, where they gather all the scrap iron and old metal, carry it in, and bring out new iron? If human beings can do this, why should Christ not do it? The Resurrection is real, and He reminds us of it every year. Every Great Friday the Church reads us a passage from the Old Testament, specifically from the Prophet Ezekiel, chapter thirty-seven, at the very moment when the Epitaphios returns from the procession. Those of you who have Holy Week service books and use them to follow

the services of the Passion, open the book at home and calmly read this prophecy of Ezekiel. It was written seven hundred years before Christ for our sake, describing what will happen in the Resurrection. Listen to what it says: “The hand of the Lord came upon me,” meaning, Ezekiel says, that the hand of God took hold of him, “and the Lord brought me out in the Spirit and set me down in the midst of the plain.” God took me by His hand, he says, lifted me up, and carried me to a vast plain. And this plain was full of

human bones. It was filled with human bones. “And He led me around them on every side.” He took me through that vast plain and showed them to me up close. “And behold, there were very many upon the face of the plain, and they were exceedingly dry”—completely dried out. “And He said to me”—He turned and asked me—“Son of man, can these bones live?” What do you think, He asks him: can these bones come to life? They are dry bones. According to human reasoning and human science, how could they live? “And I said, O Lord, You know.” You know. What do I know? What a beautiful and humble answer. We claim to know everything; we answer every question and pile up absurdities and foolishness. What do I know? he says. “You know, O Lord.” You know, Lord, and whatever You will, You do. You can bring life out of stones, out of bones, out of nothing. How did You create us? Did You place an order and have someone else make us? “From nothing You brought us into being.” “And He said to me, Prophesy”—speak, not only for the bones, but so that the whole world may learn. Speak to them. “Prophesy over these bones and say to them.” Speak to them. Am I to speak to bones? Is he to speak to bones? What can I tell them?

“O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.” Listen, dry bones, to what the Lord, what God, will say to you. What does the Lord say? “Thus says the Lord to these bones: Behold”—pay attention—“I, the Lord, shall bring upon you the spirit of life.” I shall bring you to life. “And I shall put sinews upon you”—sinews upon the bones; pay attention, this is creation—“and I shall bring flesh upon you, cover you with skin, and put My Spirit within you; and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” Listen carefully, He says, to these words.

The sinews will be put in place, like the wooden framework and supporting beams; flesh will be added and fill out the body; it will be covered with skin; and then the spirit will enter, and the person will rise again, whether you want it or not. This is precisely how the human person will be created anew. This is what the Lord says to you, O bones, so listen. “And I prophesied as He commanded me.” I said what He told me to say. I stood there and preached a sermon to the dry bones. “And it came to pass as I prophesied”—at the very moment when I was speaking to the bones the words the Lord had given me—“behold, there was an earthquake.” An earthquake took place.

That is, He shook the whole thing, as we shake a watch or some object that has something inside it. “And behold, there was a shaking, and the bones came together, each one to its proper place.” Every bone went to its own place. A leg did not go onto a back, nor did my hand go onto my wife’s head, nor did what belonged to me go to someone else. No. Each one went to its proper place. Do you understand? Skeletons made of bones. Creation begins. Then it says: “And I looked.” I was watching what was happening before me at that moment, “and behold, sinews were upon them”; sinews began to appear. The skeleton was formed, sinews came upon the bones, “and flesh grew upon them”; each person’s body began to fill out with flesh. “And skin came up over them”; they were clothed with skin. But “there was no spirit in them.” What do we have up to this point? Adam before God breathed into him and made him a living soul. A bodily remain lying there, without the soul within it, because the human person is neither the body alone nor the soul alone. The human person is both together. The soul is the human spirit, the soul of the human person. The body

without the soul is the bodily remains of the person, as we said one evening. A “remainder” is what is left behind. But the two together constitute the human person: a human soul and a human body—the two together, the human person. So this is where we are: we began with dry bones; the bones were joined together, were filled out, and received skin, and so forth, but there is still no spirit within them. Let us continue. “And He said to me, ‘Prophesy to the spirit; prophesy, Son of Man.’” Tell the spirit to come as well,

so that they may not remain merely slain upon the ground, merely bodily remains lying there. Tell the spirit to come as well. And He says: “Thus says the Lord: Come from the four winds.” Come from the four winds, from the four points of the horizon—from the whole world, that is. Wherever you may find them, come.

“And breathe into these dead,” just as God breathed into Adam, made him a living soul, and gave him life. Come to these also, “and let them live,” and they will rise to their feet. “And I prophesied,” I did as I had done before, “as He commanded me,” just as He had told and commanded me, “and the spirit entered into them”; their souls entered them once again, “and they lived and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great assembly.” He could not count those whom he saw before him. “And the Lord spoke to me, saying: ‘Son of Man, these bones are the whole house of Israel.’” These bones represent the whole world.

The descendants of Jacob are here, and they say: “Our bones have become dry, our hope has perished, and we are utterly lost.” You speak to me of dry bones, and now you speak of life, the Resurrection, and all the rest? This is what they say. “Therefore prophesy and say to them”—tell them, so that they may know—“Thus says the Lord: Behold, I will open your graves and bring you up from your graves, and I will lead you into the promised land. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your tombs and bring My people up from their tombs.” The Lord truly is Lord. Christ opened graves.

When you see that “I open graves,” you will know that I am the Lord. He opened graves. Jehovah’s Witnesses reject the divinity of Jesus. They say He is not Lord, but a servant. Yet how, then, does He open graves? “Behold,” He says, “I open graves, so that you may know that I am the Lord.” Did Christ open graves or did He not? And did He not leave His own tomb open as well? Is His tomb not still open, unlike the tombs of all the so-called founders of religions, whose tombs remain closed and hold them within? For the tomb did not hold Jesus Christ alone; death did not hold Him. Read the magnificent passage in John Chrysostom’s Catechetical Homily on the night of the Resurrection, where he mocks the tomb, death, and their power. But most of us, unfortunately,

take our candles and leave; we go home for the Easter soup. How could we remain behind to celebrate the Resurrection? How could we remain and listen to these texts, through which the Saints of God help us understand the depth of our faith? And so, my dear ones, from the foundation of the world God has spoken of the Resurrection: that we shall become complete human persons again, and that we shall live again in new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness will dwell. Do you know that this earth will pass away? Do you know that the sea will disappear? What reason would Christ have had to hide these things from us? I read in the Apocalypse, chapter 21, verse 1: “And I saw a new heaven”—new in the sense of renewed—

“and a new earth”—again, renewed—“for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.” He had already said it here as well: “The earth and heaven fled from His face, and no place was found for them.” Therefore, whatever a person may build in this world, he should know that he is building something like the games we played as children, setting up little make-believe homes, whatever it may be, however large, expensive, or impressive. One day, when the game was over, we kicked them aside and left. This is what awaits the entire world. We are not permanent inhabitants of the earth. Our educated people and our theologians are wrong to tell us that we are inhabitants of the earth. We are tenants upon the earth. The day after tomorrow, by night or by day,

at whatever hour He chooses, He serves us notice of eviction. “I want the property back,” He says. Everything we possess is given for use. And every good thing that exists is given for nourishment, not for indulgence. Yet we indulge ourselves and seek enjoyment. That is not right. We always need a sober and proper fear—and by fear I mean reverence. We need the right reverence for the order Christ has established in all these things. We created nothing. We brought nothing from our mother’s womb, and we shall take nothing with us when we leave this world. Someone else brought us here.

We were brought here through a law that He established. We did not come because we ourselves wished to come. No one owes his existence here to himself. He owes it to the love of God, the providence of God, and the law of God. If you wish to read about this, you will see that even the parents can claim no right over it. If God had not put forth His hand... Read the twelfth chapter of Zechariah in the Old Testament, and see how, at the moment of conception, the spirit—the soul—is formed within the child by God. God has established this law, and He governs everything in His own way. He gives an account to no one, nor will He ever give an account to anyone. We shall give an account to Him.

Whether we want to or not. Death is the most serious matter, and the Resurrection is the most serious matter. Death is deliverance for the human person; death is a good thing for the human person. Remember my words, though I myself may die before you. When your turn comes to pay that debt which is owed—the debt of death—

once you leave your body, you will not want to enter it again. Your children may weep and cling to your bodily remains and to your bed, but you will say, “Go on—keep going.” When you look back and see your body as a lifeless carcass—the body you now tend and pamper at countless beauty institutes, shaping and grooming it—you will say to your angel, “Go on, and keep going.”

That is how it is. If you do not believe what I am telling you, pray beforehand that Christ will show you your death. Then you will acknowledge that what I am telling you now is true. You will acknowledge that what I am telling you now is true. These things we are discussing are not morbid. The subject of death and the Resurrection is the highest philosophy and the highest theology. For of His Kingdom there shall be no end. Human beings will shine and will live together with God. Only then will they understand what all this truly means—what it was that God created. Then we shall thank Him from our hearts. Here, we do not thank Him from our hearts. We grumble against Him, if we do not actually blaspheme and insult Him. Forgive me for speaking in this tone. But I want to emphasize certain fundamental

truths, because, as you know, today they are called into question. Indeed, people even question whether they have a soul. If they have anything inside them, they imagine it is some sort of cat! They do not want to admit that they have a soul. But is it not good to have a soul? Is it not good to live eternally? They do not want it. That is a distortion, a distortion in the fullest sense of the word. And although a person sees that he has created nothing by himself and that everything he possesses comes from God—knowledge, light, taste, sensation, intellect—he has made none of it himself. Neither did his mother nor his father. They are all gifts; someone else has given them to him. Yet he refuses to acknowledge that Other. He heaps accusations upon Him, blaming Him for all these things; he denies Him and joins himself to someone else. Let such things be done, lived, and believed...

by people who have never lived in the light in which we Greeks have lived from our swaddling clothes, the light in which we Orthodox have lived from the first days our eyes opened, like young chicks opening their eyes to the sun. If they do this, I can at least say, “Let it pass; those people have not seen.” But we have tasted. We know the power of our faith. We know the power of our true faith through the countless miracles that have occurred to this day and continue to occur every day. Almost every Greek—not merely every family, but every Greek—has a host of miracles in his life. He has seen his God. He has seen the hand of God many times.

He interprets it differently. He calls it luck; he calls it coincidence. “He was lucky.” Really? No—the providence of God sheltered him. Luck? Does luck even exist? What is luck? What is fate? These ideas belong to idolatry. There is no such thing here. Here there is Christ, God, and Hope. Beyond these three, there is nothing. I remember being called to order by a blind man of about forty in Piraeus. His name was Uncle Dionysis. He was blind and sold lottery tickets, carrying them in his hand as he walked with his white cane. Once, I remember, I stopped him at the port of Piraeus and said, “Uncle Dionysis, let me buy a lucky ticket.”

He was carrying the lottery tickets, and I watched him moving along with his cane. Uncle Dionysis stopped and said to me: “I cannot see you with my bodily eyes, but I see you with my spiritual eyes. I see that you are an educated man and understand many things. Allow me, from my experience, to tell you that there is no such thing as luck.” I was astonished, because until then I knew only luck—great luck and all the other foolish falsehoods we tell. “What does exist, Uncle Dionysis?” “Faith, God, and Hope exist, my child. Luck does not exist. If you believe in luck, I will not sell you a lottery ticket, even though this is how my wife and I earn

our daily bread. If you believe what I have told you, then I will give you one.” And that is how it is. That is how it was, and that is how it remains. Luck does not exist. Everything is under the providence of God, even though God sometimes enlists the devil himself in order to help us. I will turn to another point, because many people will be left with an unanswered question if I do not address it. In connection with luck, many people gamble, as we do on the football pools. We buy lottery tickets, bonds, and other things in order to win. We place bets at the racetrack and so forth, hoping that luck will speak in our favor.

Sometimes we see money being given to certain people through these satanic methods. It is not that God could not have provided it in some other way when there was a genuine need, but He condescends to human weakness. I remember an incident that took place on the Holy Mountain.

Among the shops on the Holy Mountain there was a kiosk run by a family man with six or seven children—I think six girls and one boy, most of them old enough to marry. He also sold lottery tickets. The agency in Athens required him to take a supply of them. “What am I supposed to do with lottery tickets on the Holy Mountain?” he would ask. But they forced him to take them. You know how this corrupt system imposes itself upon the world.

It forces kiosk owners to stock obscene magazines, lottery tickets, and whatever else the satanic minds of men devise. If a visitor happened to pass by, he might buy them. So what happened? The man left for the weekend and went to his village outside the Holy Mountain, planning to return on the first boat Monday morning for his week's work. When he reached home, his wife told him, “The schoolteacher has asked for our eldest daughter's hand.” “And what did you tell him, woman?” “I told him you would be coming home, but I also let him understand that we were in favor. He is a schoolteacher! For him to come into our family would be a great honor.” Yes.

“Did you discuss it? What does he expect from us?” “He is asking for one hundred thousand drachmas,” she said. “Has he no shame? Does he not know that this land cannot yield even a hundred kernels of corn, much less a hundred thousand drachmas? Is he not ashamed to come and demand that from us? If he had said that we have an honorable and virtuous child and that he wished to marry her, I could understand it. But to demand a sum that would ruin us for a million years—that I cannot understand. He is not a good man, woman.” His wife was furious, because she thought the schoolteacher was honoring her, and she would have a schoolteacher for a son-in-law, and so on. She made the poor man's life unbearable until he was finally able to leave on Monday. He departed sorrowful and went back to the Holy Mountain. He brought a large candle to Saint Nicholas and lit it before him.

He said, “Saint Nicholas, you who take orphans and widows under your care and help them so that they are not ruined in this world, help this orphan of mine as well.” He saw his own daughter as an orphan because he was unable to help her. “Please help her.” The poor man wept for a long time there in his cell, and then he went to sleep. The next morning, the drawing was held in Athens for the lottery tickets he still had left. The man had not sold them, yet he had been charged for them and had to pay for them. And among those remaining tickets was the winning ticket for one hundred thousand drachmas. He had gone and pleaded with Saint Nicholas, and Saint Nicholas gave him the money in this way. What can I say now? In any case, you should know that there is no such thing as luck, even though Christ sometimes enlists

even Satan himself to help me. In any event, this is a side issue in our discussion and in the subject as a whole. The point, my dear friends, is this: whether we believe it or not, one day we shall rise from the dead.

Whether we want it or not, one day we shall rise from the dead. What does depend on us is how we shall rise—as doves or as ravens. That is our concern. Let us take care to settle this while we are still here. It costs nothing: metanoia, repentance; Confession; Holy Communion. No money is needed for any of this. All that is needed is humility, for our ego to step aside. We shall fall, and we shall rise again. To fall is human; to persist in the fall is satanic. Some people hold on to their sins for many years. Why, sir, do you keep them? Are they foreign currency? What are you waiting for?

Να πεθάνει ο άνθρωπος. Θα πει κανείς, χρειάζεται κουράγιο για να πεθάνει; Δεν χρειάζεται κουράγιο για να πεθάνεις; Θα πεθάνεις, το θέλεις ή όχι, διότι είναι ένα ποτήρι αυτό που αυτός ο Θεός, όταν έγινε άνθρωπος, το ήπιε, αυτή η μητέρα που τον γέννησε και αυτή το ήπιε. Δεν είναι ιδιαίτερο να μην το πιούμε εμείς. Αλλά εκείνο που είναι παρηγορητικό, ενθαρρυντικό και καλό, όπως θα λέγαμε, είναι ότι ο άνθρωπος θα αναστηθεί μια ημέρα. Αυτό το ξέρει ο άνθρωπος. Δεν ξέρω γιατί δεν θέλει να το πιστέψει, γιατί δεν θέλει να το δεχτεί. Δεν είναι καλό; Καλό είναι. Γιατί όμως δεν θέλει να το δεχτεί και δεν το δέχεται ένα μεγάλο ποσοστό ανθρώπων, όπως φαίνεται;

Ανέστησαν οι άνθρωποι, μύριοι μυριάδες, και άνοιξαν τα βιβλία για να κριθούν οι άνθρωποι. Εκεί που σας διάβασα γρηγορότερα από την Αποκάλυψη, εκεί διαβάζουμε το εξής. Αυτά τα έβλεπε 800 χρόνια π.Χ. ο Δανιήλ για λογαριασμό των ανθρώπων. Ο Ιωάννης, έπειτα από 800 χρόνια, είδε και αυτός το εξής: «Και είδον θρόνον μέγαν λευκόν και τον καθήμενον επ' αυτού, ου από προσώπου έφυγεν η γη και ο ουρανός». Από του προσώπου του οποίου; Αυτού που εκάθισε στον θρόνο τον λευκό. Λοιπόν, έφυγε η γη και ο ουρανός. Πού πήγε;

Εκεί που ήταν πριν γίνει. Μη βάζεις τη λογική στη μέση. Πού ήταν πριν γίνει; Την έφτιαξα εγώ, την έβγαλα από την αποθήκη μου; Εκεί που ήταν πριν γίνει, εκεί πήγε. «Και τόπος ουχ ευρέθη αυτοίς». Χάστηκε. «Και είδον τους νεκρούς, τους μεγάλους και τους μικρούς», είδον, «εστώτας ενώπιον του θρόνου, και βιβλία ηνοίχθησαν», όπως είπε και ο Δανιήλ, «και άλλο βιβλίον ηνοίχθη, ο εστί της ζωής». Και ανοίχτηκε και ένα άλλο βιβλίο, λέγει, το οποίο έλεγε το Βιβλίο της Ζωής. Ξέρετε ποιο λέγεται Βιβλίο της Ζωής;

της Θείας Κοινωνίας, η οποία γίνεται κατά την ώρα, όπως σας είπα χθες, που ρίχνει ο ιερεύς μέσα στο Άγιο Ποτήριο τις ψυχούλες εκείνες που αντιπροσωπεύουν και τα ονόματα για τα οποία εμείς επήγαμε στην Εκκλησία μας. Δεν είναι λοιπόν, επαναλαμβάνω και συνεχίζω, μία υπόθεση απλή. Είναι ανεπανάληπτος υπόθεση αυτή, για την οποία ο άνθρωπος πρέπει να ξέρει σωστά, να πράττει σωστά, ώστε να μη δημιουργεί, να ωφελείται. Είτε το θέλουμε λοιπόν είτε όχι, θα αναστηθούμε μια ημέρα, θα ξαναγίνουμε άνθρωποι. Αυτό είναι που σοκάρει πολλούς. Δεν σ' αρέσει να ξαναγίνεις άνθρωπος; Ανθρώπους δεν έφτιαξε ο Θεός; Σάρκα δεν τους έδωσε; Ψυχή δεν τους έδωσε;

οστέων ανθρωπίνων. Είναι γεμάτο από οστά, από κόκαλα ανθρώπινα. «Και περιήγαγέ με επ' αυτά κυκλόθεν κύκλω». Πήρε και με γύρισε μέσα σ' αυτό το μεγάλο πεδίο και τα είδα από κοντά. «Και ιδού πολλά σφόδρα επί προσώπου του πεδίου, ξηρά σφόδρα», κατάξερα. «Και είπε προς με», και γυρίζει και μου λέει, «Υιέ ανθρώπου, ει ζήσεται τα οστά ταύτα;» Τι φαντάζεσαι, του λέει, μπορούν να ζήσουνε αυτά τα κόκαλα; Ξερά κόκαλα, τι να ζήσουνε στη λογική του ανθρώπου και στην επιστήμη του ανθρώπου; «Και είπα, Κύριε, Συ επίστασαι». Συ ξέρεις. Τι ξέρω εγώ; Όμορφη απάντηση, ταπεινή απάντηση. Εμείς τα ξέρουμε όλα, σε όλα απαντούμε, αραδιάζουμε αστεία και ανοησίες. Τι ξέρω εγώ, του λέει; «Συ επίστασαι, Κύριε», Συ γνωρίζεις, Κύριε, ότι θέλεις κάνεις. Τα λιθάρια και από τα κόκαλα, από το τίποτα βγάζεις ζωή. Πώς εμάς μας έφτιαξες; Είχες παραγγελία και μας φτιάξανε; «Εκ του μηδενός μάς έφερες εις το είναι». «Και είπε προς με· προφήτευσον», πες, όχι μόνο για τα οστά, για όλο τον κόσμο να μάθουν. Όμως μίλησέ τους. «Και προφήτευσον επί τα οστά ταύτα και ερείς αυτοίς». Μίλησέ τους. Στα κόκαλα να μιλήσω; Στα κόκαλα να μιλήσει; Τι να τους πω;

Το θέλουμε είτε όχι, θα αναστηθούμε μια μέρα. Εκείνο που εξαρτάται από μας είναι το πώς θα αναστηθούμε, περιστερές ή κόρακες. Αυτό είναι το δικό μας θέμα. Ας φροντίσουμε από εδώ να το έχουμε τακτοποιήσει αυτό. Δωρεάν είναι, μετάνοια είναι, εξομολόγηση είναι, Θεία Κοινωνία. Δεν χρειάζονται λεφτά για αυτό το πράγμα. Μόνο ταπείνωση χρειάζεται, ο εγωισμός να πάει στην άκρη. Θα πέφτουμε, θα ξανασηκωθούμε. Το πίπτειν είναι ανθρώπινον, το εμμένειν σατανικόν. Υπάρχουν άνθρωποι πολλά χρόνια που κρατούν τις αμαρτίες. Γιατί, κύριε, τις κρατάς; Συνάλλαγμα είναι; Τι το περιμένεις;
