Summary

Every person will leave this world at an unknown time and must remain ready to meet Christ, whether through death or at the Second Coming. Eternal destiny begins in this life: communion with God opens into Paradise, while persistent allegiance to sin and the devil leads toward hell. Christ has passed through death as humanity’s forerunner, assuring believers of life beyond the grave and calling them to vigilance, repentance, and hope.

Following on from these reflections, I think it would be good to add, after all that has been said, another subject—one that is equally serious and concerns every person who comes into this world. Every person who enters this world will one day leave it, whether he wants to or not, whether he believes it or not. He simply does not know when or how he will leave. The Holy Fathers have said many things about these matters.

Every person should know this.

The point is that one day he will leave this world. And here, in one of my notes, I see that Solomon the Wise says: “There is one entrance into life for all, and the same way out.” There is one way, one door, by which man enters the world, and likewise he will leave the world. What man does not know, I say, is what this will be like and how he will depart from this world. Our Lord has not told us when we shall die or what we shall die from, because then we would die a thousand deaths before our death. Out of His love, this has been hidden from man.

There is one more thing He has not told man: when He Himself will come. Man knows neither when he will go to the Lord nor when the Lord will come to him. These two things are hidden from man; he does not need to know them. A person must always live with the thought that, sooner or later, he will leave this world and stand face-to-face with his Creator. Whether he believes it or not—and I believe it—he will stand before Him. When this will happen, I do not know. It will happen in one of two ways: either He will call us to go to Him, unless we do something foolish ourselves, or He Himself will come—I mean, He will come as the Lord. Paul, who wrote the Epistle to the Thessalonians, says this at one point.

This passage forms part of the Apostle reading at the funeral service. It says, “We who are alive, who remain until the Second Coming of the Lord.” Notice that he says “we,” with an eta in Greek—not “you,” as though he meant, “You who will be alive at some distant time,” and so on. They expected it from one moment to the next. And today especially, when there are countless ways for a person to leave this life more easily, and when, as you know, whole families, circles of friends, and who knows what else are wiped out every day by the means of transportation and communication that we ourselves have invented, man should be more watchful than ever. So, then, the subject is death. Does death exist? That is the question.

Death exists as we understand it. But as things truly are, death does not exist. It depends on how a person thinks about it and what he means by death. By death we usually mean the separation of the soul from the body. That is the death people mourn. Yet in reality, even this death is not death; it is called sleep. It is merely a somewhat longer sleep than those times when we sleep and then wake again. That is why the places we call graveyards are not called graveyards by our Church, but cemeteries—sleeping places. What do you call graveyards here? Père-Lachaise? Père-Lachaise is French. Liverpool?

But when people use the Greek word koimitirio—a sleeping place—both grandmother and mother understand it, don’t they? In any case, in the language of the Church it is called a cemetery, a place of sleep, not a place of the dead.

Well then, madam—and Mr. Martiokis—you have learned Greek well, despite all the mix-ups.

And so our Church prays for those who have fallen asleep, for people who have lain down for a little longer. Why should it seem strange to you whether it is for a thousand, two thousand, or five thousand years? Since the Annunciation, since Christ came into the world, only two days have passed for Him. For us, two thousand years have passed, but in reality they are two days. We shall understand this when we die; we cannot understand it now. However much time passes for man, it is nothing. For man, you know, is eternal. Man is eternal. He does not die. “Though he die, yet shall he live.” There is life beyond the grave. You see, we look at graveyards and say, “I have lost my loved one,” and, “Farewell, my George,” and so forth, or, “May we meet again.” We remain here saying, “Farewell,” while others tell us, “May you live and remember him.” Yes, you are told to live, to remember him, and to remain here.

“Do not leave!” Such things are foolish; they arise from our ignorance. We must acquire a right understanding, both for ourselves and so that we may teach others. For if we fail to understand this matter of our entrance into and departure from this world, one day we shall fail altogether. I want us to know, then, that death exists, and indeed that death is twofold, not single. It is not merely the death we see, over which we weep and put on mourning, turn the pictures upside down, and remove sweets from the house, lest Death be sweetened and return. That is not what death truly is.

That death will be healed. But there is another death: the death of the soul. Just as death involves a separation in the body, there is also a separation in the spirit. The body needs the soul in order to live, and the soul needs God in order to live. We should mourn those who are separated from God, lest the other death overtake them. We should not mourn those who are united with God, for even if they die, they shall live. “He who believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live,” God says. A person must therefore understand this matter correctly. When did Adam die? Spiritually, he died at the moment of his disobedience. Bodily—

—he died 930 years later. Do you know that there are also living dead? You went to school; have you never heard the parable of the Prodigal Son? What did the father say to the elder son about his younger brother? “This brother of yours was dead and is alive again.” But how was he dead? He was out getting drunk with his girlfriends! Precisely—that is exactly why: he was far from home and far from God. Such a person is a living corpse, a walking graveyard, as we said here one evening. Remember another passage: a man asked permission to go and bury his father, but Christ did not grant him permission. When the man offered this as his excuse, Christ told him, “Let the dead bury their own dead.”

There were dead men wearing neckties in his village who could bury his father. “You come and stay close to Me,” He tells him. Have you ever read the Apocalypse, to see what it says to an angel—or to a bishop? “You have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.” Do not be misled by how easily we say, “How are things at home?” “Glory to God, we are well.” In what sense are you well? No one goes to Church.

They live in sin; some lie, some steal, some do not believe, and some blaspheme. So what does “Glory to God, we are well” actually mean? That we are healthy? That we have food to eat? How are we different from mice, which eat without working, while we work in order to eat? You work, and so you say, “Glory to God, we are well”? What is well about you? In proportion to the people living in them, most of our homes ought to have flags flying at half-mast outside.

There are so many living dead inside—people who have no relationship with the Church or with God, who do not believe, do not pray, do not attend Church, do not receive Holy Communion, and do not bear children. There ought to be one flag at half-mast for every person inside—not to mention one coffin for each of them waiting in the hall.

We do not grasp this. We look elsewhere, although this is what truly matters. When asked, “How are you? How are things?” we answer, “I have a second car,” or, “I have a color television,” or, “Why shouldn’t I be well? I have money in the bank.” None of that counts here. The person who may in some measure consider himself secure is the one prepared both for this world and for the next, because this world continues into the other.

People say, “Hell and Paradise are right here.” It is foolish to speak that way. Yet Hell does begin here, and Paradise also begins here. Wherever the revealing flash of death finds each person—whether fallen or standing—that is where he will remain in eternity. This is what should fill a person with awe, whether young or old, because, as you know, death takes people without regard to age. It does not go only to the elderly. It is true that we elderly people are moving toward death, but the young must not forget that death is also moving toward them. If you visit the cemeteries, you will see more lambs than rams. Yet we refuse to reflect seriously upon this reality. Then suddenly we find ourselves face-to-face with it, and many people afterward lose their health; some take their own lives, while others are confined to psychiatric hospitals.

Why? Because they never prepared to die. They prepared only to live. As I said this morning at the end of the talk, man did not come into this world merely to live. Man came in order to die, and he dies in order to live. This life is simply an arena in which man must struggle against the world, himself, and Satan—the three principal enemies he faces—so that, if he becomes fit for that other life, he may remain with God forever. If he refuses to make use of this opportunity, he will find himself deceived on that day. Yet those who have not looked deeply into these things naturally ask: Who made death? The answer is this: man fashioned spiritual death with his own hands, while God permitted bodily death out of love.

Read the texts of our Church, my friends, and you will see that bodily death—the separation of the body from the soul—was permitted so that evil might not become eternal. For Paul says: “It is sown in corruption; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it will come forth a spiritual body.” You give leprosy to the earth, and tomorrow you will receive gold. You give it cancer, and you will receive a sound body. What misery there would be if man never died—the world would reek with disease. Death is deliverance. People fall into God’s furnace and will emerge as new human beings. Have you ever read the explanation for the first Saturday of Souls, observed before the Gospel of the Last Judgment during Great Lent? Read two or three lines of it—the words printed in black.

Read why this first Saturday of Souls was instituted, and among other things you will find it saying that we shall all rise at one age: thirty-three years old. But who believes that he will rise? “I have lost my loved one,” you tell me. What was this person—a key that you misplaced? Was the person you “lost” an object? Can human beings be lost? Have you never read in the Apocalypse, “Death gave up the dead,” and that the earth and the sea gave up the dead who were in them? Have you never read that? Have you never read or paid attention to the prophecy of Ezekiel, which the Church reads when the Epitaphios returns from the procession? Do you not hold the service book in your hand then? Go and look at it. Did God not show Ezekiel how we shall become whole human beings once again?

God showed Ezekiel the bones of the whole world scattered across a great plain. Did He not tell him to prophesy so that they might come to life? He prophesied, and at his word the whole plain began to move, and each bone came together in its proper place. Then he saw sinews appear, then flesh, then skin, until the people lay there as the first man had lain before God breathed life into him. Then the spirit entered them, and they all stood up. What does this mean? Is it not speaking about the Resurrection? But who will believe, and who will pay attention? The steamroller of habit has buried all these truths beneath it. My beloved, there are two deaths: bodily death and spiritual death. Bodily death will be healed. Whether they wish it or not, both believers and unbelievers will rise again. The difference is this:

What will enter the body that rises again? What will enter it is whatever we laid in the grave—or whatever state we are in at the Second Coming, when, as Paul says, human bodies will be changed in the twinkling of an eye. Some will remain below, heavy with sin, while others will fly upward to meet the Lord in the air. If a person has even a little yearning and, with God’s help and through his own struggle, departs this life in metanoia—repentant, baptized, confessed, and spiritually prepared—then, in laying his body in the grave, he is doing nothing more than entrusting a dove to safekeeping. On the day of the general Resurrection, that soul will enter its own body again. What he laid down, he will receive back. But if...

An unbeliever, a blasphemer, an immoral person—someone who spent his life far from the Church, far from God, and far from the Mysteries—also deposits a raven in the treasury of Hades. And tomorrow it is a raven that will enter his body. Both groups will rise, but some will be with God and others with Satan. But did God make Hell for man?

He made the Kingdom. “Come, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” But is there no Hell? There is Hell, but it was prepared for the devil. “Depart into the eternal fire.” Was it prepared for us? No: “Prepared for the devil and his angels.” Yet you wanted the devil as your adviser. You lived your life with him. You did not receive Me; instead, you blasphemed Me and the Cross. Consequently, you remained with him, and you will go where he goes. Why, then, do we accuse God of having made Hell for man? Hell is for Satan, while Paradise—the Kingdom of Heaven—is for man. But man does not do deeds worthy of the Kingdom. If I spend my life working on the devil’s building site, am I then going to collect my wages from Christ’s building site? How could that be?

Will a man say, “I worked for the devil, but now God will tell me to come inside”? It is very foolish to think this way. There are, then, two deaths: the death of the soul and the death of the body. We say, “He died.” Death means separation from life—separation from life. You see that all the lights in this room are alive, except for three. Those three are not alive. Why not? Because they do not share in the light. Now, this light is not God, nor is it life itself; it is only an illustration. Man is not life in himself; he participates in life. And life is Christ. If you do not have Christ, you do not have life. “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son does not have life.” Christ is life. “I am the life.” This is why His side is called life-giving, and why His tomb is called life-giving.

This is also why the Cross is called life-giving, and why the Holy Chalice offered to man contains the Bread of Life. A person who has no living, organic bond with Christ—above all through Holy Communion—is, I repeat, a living corpse. Separation from life is death, and God is life. Since we do not want God, we remain living corpses, like these lights you see here. What is needed? They must make contact. We turn the switch, the connection is made, and immediately they come alive; immediately they rise, like the other lights you see shining at this moment. So it is with man. As long as he does not want Christ, who is life, he is a living corpse. He possesses natural life: he eats, drinks, thinks, feels, shouts, understands, and experiences pleasure.

But he does not possess spiritual life. Animals, reptiles, birds, fish, and the rest possess this natural life. What he lacks is spiritual life. Adam sinned, was cut off from life, and at that very moment died spiritually. He was severed from life, and separation from life is death. Bodily, I repeat, he died 930 years later.

There are, then, two deaths. We are especially inclined to mourn the second—the separation of the soul from the body—although this death is nothing. It is merely a brief episode. And what kind of brief episode is it? It is like what happens to chicks. You know how a hen has fifteen or twenty eggs beneath her wings. As she broods over them, birds are being formed inside. Is that not so? Now consider how the hen might think—and how we often think as well.

Imagine the hen speaking to the chicks: “Well, what do you say? Would you like to come out of there, where you are all curled up?” They do not want to come out. But the hen does not listen to them. Tap—she strikes the shell, and the chick comes out. “Look outside! Look at the sun! Look at the food!” And the chick says, “To think that I was sitting curled up in there!” So it is with man inside his body. However handsome he may be, however strong, however much people applaud him, however capable he may be, he is nothing more than a little bird that breaks through its shell, leaves the body below, and flies away to the place of rest prepared for it. It is nothing. Mark well what I am telling you. I have experienced what I am describing to you now. When you leave your body, you will recoil from it. If your angel told you to turn back and enter it again, you would not...

Would you go back in? Would you return to a carcass? Would you go inside that thing? That is what the body is. The thing you cared for, cherished, and kept in order is a carcass and nothing more. It is a prison. Even if a woman has left ten children behind, clinging to her deathbed in a scene filled with emotion, she still longs to depart from that carcass, from the body lying there. You see, this illuminating teaching is no longer heard. We do not read about these matters; consequently, we pay no attention to them and know nothing about them. And you see what happens when a soul departs from this world. Often we do not even consider whether the person departed in a good spiritual state. For if someone departed well, it is a joyful event: that soul has been placed in safekeeping and is no longer in danger.

We do not know what will happen. Today we may be standing, but what about tomorrow? Have you not heard what Paul says? “Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.” We think we are walking rightly now and that all is well. But will it still be so tomorrow? Who knows what temptation may come, what illness may visit us, or how Satan may deceive us? If I am now attaining the purpose for which I live here—the victory I hope to gain there—why should I not depart now? What do I need: to breathe a little more oxygen, eat a few more onions or beans, or consume a few more of God’s calves? Will the world come to an end if I do not eat them? I do not imagine that I am indispensable or have something no one else can offer here. By God’s grace, He can make use of all things. It is to my benefit to depart at the most fitting moment, and Christ knows when I can bear the greatest fruit.

He knows when to place me in safekeeping. Yet we weep, torment ourselves, and cry out over a relic. I want you to understand that when we stand before a coffin, the whole person is not there. If you were to see me lying in a coffin now—assuming you had time to come and were not too busy—you would not properly say, “That is Panagopoulos.” You would say, “That is the relic, the bodily remains, of Panagopoulos.” If you saw my soul, you would say, “That is the spirit of Panagopoulos,” or “the soul of Panagopoulos.” Then where is Panagopoulos himself? When the two are reunited, there will be Panagopoulos. For now, we have his bodily remains. What does “remains” mean? It means what has been left behind. The soul is one thing, the body another, and the two united are something else. One is the spirit of Panagopoulos, another is the bodily remains of Panagopoulos, and the two together are Panagopoulos. We must learn this.

We learn so many other things; let us also learn about death. Let us make this truth our own and keep it in our nous, our spiritual intellect, day and night. Yet this is the one subject we want nothing to do with. We turn our faces away and knock on wood whenever we hear about death. Wood is supposedly a poor conductor, you see, so that death will not hear us. If we knock on wood, perhaps death will go elsewhere; because wood is a poor conductor, even if death hears, it will not reach us! We have filled our lives with every kind of superstition. I repeat: there are two deaths. That is why we must rise from the dead beginning here and now. When a human being is baptized, what is his condition beforehand? He is born dead. Even if someone says that he was born alive, spiritually he is born dead.

He is bodily alive but spiritually dead. This is why you hear the words spoken at the baptismal font. The font is not merely about becoming godparents, social distinctions, or personal advantage, as some people imagine. It is a burial. Someone who enters the world dead and cut off from God is buried there and rises again. From that moment, the black coal of that soul glows red. The newly baptized person is immediately joined to the Holy Chalice and to the Holy Altar. The infant is taken into the sanctuary, before the tabernacle, and immediately receives the Body and Blood. The child has come alive, if we truly believe. Life has entered him, and from then on care must be taken that Satan does not extinguish the flame lit on the day of Baptism. This is the purpose of Holy Communion afterward, and the purpose of Confession after Baptism: they preserve the life that was given freely in Baptism.

The devil understands this better than any of us. That is precisely why he attacks us Orthodox Christians so fiercely. The things seen among the Orthodox are not seen in any other religious body or teaching in the world. Do you see such things among Muslims? Among Roman Catholics? Protestants? In Judaism? Only in Orthodoxy. Satan knows that Orthodox Christians have escaped from him, that from infancy they have been grafted into Christ. That is why he fears them and wages war against them. When John Chrysostom confronted Satan, he asked him what he feared among Christians. “I fear the water,” Satan said. “I fear the blood and a piece of wood.” The water is Baptism, the blood is Holy Communion, and the wood is the Precious Cross, which belong only to...

Only the Orthodox Christian, and to no one else. Continuing these reflections on death, I would like to add a few more things. A person must know that beyond the grave there is not death, but life. He passes into another state; he remains conscious and continues to think, but he cannot act by himself. He repents of whatever evil he committed, but he cannot undo it or set it right. Why? Because he has laid aside his body. He is no longer a complete human being, but the spirit of a human being. Whatever he sinned through the body must also be set right through the body. As for our Christ—since we cannot see beyond the grave, and many of us do not even make it as far as the graveside...

It is one thing to speak philosophically about death. The doctors may have told us not to become upset, so we send a wreath and do not even attend the funeral. Yet from childhood we know that we can see only as far as the grave. We do not know by ourselves what lies beyond it. Of course, many say, “My poor man, who has ever gone there and come back, for you to tell me there is life?” Has no one come from there? Was Christ not there? Is what God tells us not enough? Did He have some reason to deceive us or take our money? Did He not go there? He came from there into this world, and has He not returned there and now waits for us? Has He not become our forerunner? Do we understand what this means—that Christ is our forerunner in our return there?

We know the prayer: “From this earthly homeland, grant me Paradise once again.” There are three forerunners connected with three great events in the history of humanity. Before Christ came into the world for the first time to visit mankind, He sent John the Forerunner.

Before He comes again at His Second Coming, Elijah will be His forerunner. The second forerunner of Christ’s coming is the glorious Elijah. And before man returns to Paradise, Christ Himself goes before him as his forerunner.

So that man, God’s beloved child, may go to Heaven, he has God Himself as his forerunner.

Never! As you sit in front of that idiot box, letting it bombard you and teach you, why not open this letter from God and see what it says about these things? For I am not speaking to you outside Holy Scripture; I am speaking to you from within Holy Scripture. A person, then, does not die; he lives beyond the grave. Yet, I repeat, everything depends on the state in which death finds him. And because death comes unexpectedly and is unmoved by anything, a person must always have his ticket in order—not leave it at home, but carry it with him at every moment.

Suppose it were possible for us to go to Hell at Christ’s command, and for me to preach there and say: “Gentlemen, all of you who have been here throughout the ages, from Cain the fratricide onward, tell me what you desire. I am at your disposal. Christ has sent me to ask you: What would you like Him to grant you or do for you?” Do you know that there would be only one voice and one request from all those who have been in Hell throughout the ages—some of whom lived for many years: fifty, a hundred, two hundred, or five hundred? Do you know what it would be? They would all make this one request: “Beg Him to let us put on our flesh once more and return to the earth for…”

“…two minutes, so that we may cry out, ‘I have sinned!’ and then die again.” That is what they failed to do during all those years when God, in His long-suffering, waited for them. We see God’s long-suffering especially in the days of Noah. Noah received the command when he was five hundred years old and completed the ark when he was six hundred—a hundred years later. Just think: with the primitive means available then, how many people must have worked during those hundred years to build that immense vessel capable of holding so much; how many earned their bread from it. Yet not one of them—not one of the craftsmen—entered the Ark. It was unbelievable. They all thought Noah had lost his mind and treated him as a joke. The workmen took their money and did everything required of them.

But they remained indifferent. Animals entered, wild beasts entered, crocodiles entered—every creature entered—but the craftsmen who had built the Ark did not. How much longer could God show long-suffering? How much longer? He showed long-suffering for 5,508 years, until the woman worthy to give birth to God was found, so that God might become man in the world. How much longer could He wait? Has He not also given us years for metanoia, for repentance and return? And yet, unfortunately, we have not used even moments of those years for our salvation. For just as a person can condemn himself to Hell in a fraction of a second, so too, if there is sincere metanoia and Holy Confession, and if he has been baptized, he can be saved in a fraction of a second.

By his own reasoning and his own senses, a person can reach only as far as the grave. Beyond that, the mystery of death remains a mystery to him. But Christ, who loves the world so greatly and knows that man is bound to his senses and wants to learn more about these hidden things, once drew back the curtain and said: “Gentlemen, you can come only this far. So come with Me, and I will help you see what happens beyond the grave.” Then He told that most beautiful and profound parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. When death visited them both, it separated them. It took one of them upward—the poor man Lazarus. He had not practiced almsgiving, because he had nothing with which to give alms; instead, he made use of his long-suffering and patient endurance.

That is indeed something—a great talent: bearing wrongs without resentment. Do you know what it means for another man to feast right over your head? The aromas of the food reach you, while you lie covered in sores outside his gate, with only dogs for nurses, licking your wounds. What would we have said? “May it stick in his throat!” But Lazarus did not say that. He endured patiently and, though he had no money and could give no alms, he gained Paradise. The other man, because he misused the good things God had given him, found himself below, for there was no one to deliver him. I often hear people say: “Do you mean to tell me that man is still alive? Hell is here, and Paradise is here.” We need not go back to ancient times; let us look at our own time.

My dear friends, did not everyone call the late Onassis blessed? Who did not? Tell me, who? Who did not admire him? Who did not envy him? Who would not have wanted to imitate him? Who? Where is Onassis today? Not even his name remains. Poor Alexander, his young son who would have carried on his name, departed before him. Then Onassis himself died in a glass chamber in Paris. Though he held the oceans in his hand, he could not prevent it. Today not even his name continues. What do you have to say? And his companion, Callas, who also held Europe and the whole world in her hand—where is she? Not even her remains are left; they became ashes and were scattered to the four winds. We need wisdom. We need wisdom, I tell you.

We need wisdom, but we do not want to see. We do not want to see. We have examples from our own time. A person does not need to go far back and search for others. If he looks at those around him, he should immediately become humble, come to his senses, and say: “My God, what if I depart tonight?” Who told you, my dear friend, that you will return home? Who told us that we will live to see the morning? Who told us that we will reach this evening? Since no one has guaranteed or promised this to us, who considers that he may depart today and find himself before his Lord?

Sometimes our accounts are not in order at work, and our hearts tremble. The doorbell or telephone rings, and our hearts nearly leap out of our chests because we may lose our job or go to prison—all over trivial matters. But here we are dealing with an account of eternal consequence, because once that curtain falls, it does not…”

“…rise again. The curtain will rise only for judgment, and then there will be no more opportunity. Christ told us that every one of us—rich and poor, strong and weak, educated and uneducated, magnates and ordinary people—will pass through the door of death. If a rich man dies two days later, what difference does it make? He ate a few more steaks; that is hardly worth discussing. Yet we sometimes say, “The poor man is always ill-fated.” Do you truly believe that? That is not how things are. In any case, Christ drew back the veil beyond the grave and revealed that life exists beyond it. He shows us two conditions: where the rich man went, who was not rich toward God and showed mercy neither to his fellow man nor to himself, and where the other man went. Does this tell us nothing? Has He not told us plainly? What more do we want Him to do—take us by the hand?

“If He wants to take us by the hand, I want a man,” a student once told me. “I want a man.” “Lazarus,” I replied, “and I am sorry that you are a Cypriot. You come from Cyprus, and I am sorry to hear you say this. Cyprus is filled with the testimony concerning Lazarus. I ask you: Did he not go there and return here, and then live for another thirty-three years? Did he not become bishop of Kition? Is he not the man who never laughed again? Have you never read about him? You should be ashamed, as a Cypriot, to ask me, ‘Who ever departed from there and returned?’” When you have a man who went, returned, and lived such a life afterward, we must be deaf indeed to claim that no one has ever gone and no one has ever returned. But unfortunately, what can we say? What can we say? Man does not want to believe. That is why Pascal says somewhere: “For those who want to believe, there is abundant light; for those who do not, there is abundant darkness.”

Man must be willing. And I do not know whether you have noticed the fearsome lesson Christ gives us at the conclusion of His words concerning Jerusalem, which we hear in the Gospel on the evening of Great Tuesday, from the twenty-third chapter of Matthew. He concludes: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how often I desired to gather you beneath my wings, as a hen gathers her chicks.” He says, “I desired to gather you as a hen gathers her young.” I do not know whether you are aware of what naturalists say about the hen: that she has nine distinct calls. When all is well, you hear her clucking; she has found a little worm, and the chicks come. When a hawk flies overhead, she makes another kind of call. I spoke to you…”

“I spoke to you gently, and I spoke to you sternly. I sent you prophets; I allowed you to be taken captive; I did everything—what did I not do?—and you were not willing.” It was not that you were unable; you were unwilling. That is the issue. There is also another passage—those who read will confirm it—in John 5:39, a verse that some people interpret incorrectly. It says: “You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life.” Here, “You search the Scriptures” is not an exhortation commanding them to search. It means: You who search the Scriptures and think that in them you will find eternal life—“these are they which bear witness concerning Me.” I am eternal life; Holy Scripture is not eternal life. Holy Scripture leads you to Me, who am eternal life.

“Yet you are unwilling to come to Me, that you may have eternal life.” You do not want to come. And why does man today not want Christ? Why do we not want Christ? Because He reproves our lawless way of life. He reproves the unlawful bed, the illicit relationship, the unlawful dealings, even what is cooking in our dishonest pot. That is why we do not want Christ. Otherwise, if Christ were to turn all His “do nots” and “thou shalt nots” into “yes,” would we not want Him? We would say, “Where have You been all this time? Where are You?” If He permitted adultery and fornication and everything else, then we would want Him. But Christ did not say that, nor will Christ ever say it. The truth, then, is that we do not want Christ. And you saw the exchange between the Rich Man and Abraham. “Send Lazarus,” he says, “to dip his finger—to dip it.” Do you grasp this?

I dwell on these words and separate them out for you. He did not ask Lazarus to bring him a glass of water or anything like that. He says only, “Let him dip his finger.” He gives way; he accepts even that. Let him at least dip his finger. How much water can a finger carry—from there to here? How could it carry any? “Let him dip his finger,” he says, “and put a little water on my tongue, for I am burning here.” He settles for a single drop, if even that were possible—simply to lick a wet finger, nothing more. And yet such is the flame in which he lives. Now try to extinguish that truth. Try to claim it is not so. Christ will say: “Did I not tell you? Did I not show you? I opened the scene before you so that you could see what things are like there. Do you want to reject it? Reject it, then. But you will be accountable; you will not be able to tell Me that I misled you or…”

“…hid something from you.” And you heard the answer Abraham gave the Rich Man: “This cannot be done. Justice reigns here; the whole scene has changed. You received your good things below, while he received affliction. Now you are in anguish, and he is comforted. Here, things are set right. Besides, I must tell you that even if I wished to do this for you, I could not, because a great chasm has been fixed between us and you. No one can pass from here to you, and no one can come from there to us.” When the Rich Man realized that his case was lost and nothing could be done for him, do you remember what he said? “Then send Lazarus down. I have five brothers whom I left below, and they think as I did. Let him warn them not to come here…”

“…to this place of torment.” He speaks of torment. Abraham answers: “They have Moses and the Prophets; they have the sacred writings.” The Rich Man is asking for some small resurrection to take place. But no one believes. People will say, “He only appeared to be dead; science has explained that.” And there goes the resurrection—no one believes it. “No, Father Abraham,” he says, “they do not believe.” He drew that conclusion from himself, because he too had utterly disregarded everything that was written. “No, Father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from here, then they will be persuaded.” The answer comes: “If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.” The person who has the power to reject the Gospel and the sacred writings—and who therefore goes astray because he does not know the Scriptures, as Christ said—rejects everything. Even if he sees miracles, he rejects them. Besides, miracles do not create faith.

Is a miracle itself faith? Some people say, “Unless I see, I will not believe.” But once you see, it is no longer faith; it is knowledge, and Christ does not reward mere knowledge. “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen,” says Paul. Read the first verse of the eleventh chapter of Hebrews: “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” I hold fast to things I cannot see, but this presupposes humility. Yet we have taken up the scholar’s pen and refuse to humble ourselves. So we approach these matters with our own reasoning, and there we stumble and remain in the vestibule. Christ has hidden nothing from us. He has told us not only what happens beyond the grave, but also that we will rise again in the future. This is what brings consolation to man.

In the vision I mentioned to you, found in the thirty-seventh chapter of Ezekiel, the entire scene shows how we will be restored as human beings. “We look for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.” This present world will pass away, and we will live beneath another heaven and upon a new earth, because Christ wills it. Yet people now do not want it. Who would not want to live again? And still, in his wickedness, man rejects even this so that he may remain in sin, refuse to believe, and avoid following the way of Christ. How comforting it is to be told that I will rise again and be delivered in this way! At this point, since we are speaking about death, life beyond the grave, and the day of the Resurrection, I would like to say a few words about the phrases I mentioned earlier, which cause some people to stumble.

For Abraham says to him: “Besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that neither can we cross over to you, nor can you come from there to us.” All the heretics and the entire Protestant world seize upon this passage and accuse us because we hold memorial services for the departed. They say: “Do you not see how the priests are deceiving you? What are you saying about memorial services? Whom can you help? Does the passage not say there is a chasm and no one can cross it? How can a priest do such a thing?” What do you think? They seem to be right, do they not? And yet this very passage is the foundation for the memorial service. For you should know that the Church does not abandon a person. A person’s account—whether righteous or unrighteous—will not be closed until the Second Coming.

At the Second Coming, everyone’s record will undergo changes—some for the better and others for the worse. People who lived rightly here, as God desired, and generously shared what they had; who enlightened others, spoke and wrote, showed concern, offered counsel, and so helped other people to be saved and to grow in virtue—these people will have a share in the salvation of those whom they helped. But others spread evil and sin, wrote corrupt things, and led people into unfaithfulness. Even after their death, because of their theories, their words, and the lives they lived, people continue to sin and are condemned to Hell; and so their torment will become still greater. This is how the records of human beings continue to develop.

Until the Second Coming, the Church plays a great role in this matter through prayers, supplications, memorial services, and above all through the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. I want you to understand this, not only for the sake of your departed loved ones, but for your own sake as well. Pay attention, and begin today to do what I am about to tell you. Otherwise, we shall all pay the price when we die. Then we shall understand the harm we have done. Abraham says, “Even if we wished to cross over, we could not; and even if you wished to come here, you could not.” Precisely so: by ourselves, we cannot go from here to there, nor can our loved ones come from there to here. That is why we place Christ between us, for He has authority over both the dead and the living, since He reigns over death. Here lies the secret.

Suppose I am unable to leave the front, where I have gone six months without taking off my boots and gaiters. If someone dear to my captain appeals to him from outside, the captain may give an order for me to be brought a little farther back, into the dugout, so that I may rest and stretch my limbs. That is something I cannot do for myself. For who, once in Hell, could leave by himself? You hear mediums saying, “I went and met my mother and father,” or, “I spoke with my son,” and so on. You spoke with Satan, who imitates their part and their voice and knows the circumstances of their lives. Alas, if souls could simply wander about, who would remain in Hell? And why would all the Pharaohs be gathered in Athens, where there are so many mediums? Who would remain in Hell? These notions of ours are absurd. But because ignorance afflicts us in these matters, we do the things we do and suffer what we suffer. This, then, is why the memorial service was instituted.

And I am deeply saddened by those people whose notices I read in the newspaper: “Instead of a memorial service, one thousand drachmas has been donated in memory of my mother.” Really? Where does your mother live? What is her address? Where did you send her that thousand-drachma note? Did you send it through the nursing home? Do the elderly there have some connection with your mother? Did you send it through the orphanage? Who rewards these things? Who? Why are you not concerned with the One who holds your mother, your father, and the soul of your loved one in His care? You do not believe in Him, yet you place a notice in the newspaper so that the charitable institution may receive the donation through the paper and everyone may know that you gave it. Since you know its address, send it directly to the nursing home, directly to the sanatorium, or directly to the orphanage. Why announce it through the newspapers? So that the world may know that you honor your mother?

Alas for these people, and for those to whom they turn. The poor departed cannot receive anything from them. Christ holds the souls in His hand, and helping a dear soul is a matter of five drachmas. It is not a matter of thousands of drachmas, as some say: “Why should I go to church? It costs so much; the priests demand so much,” and so on. They demand nothing. Take your little prosphoron loaf and your slip of paper with the name, and the matter is taken care of. That is the point. It does not depend on how large the collection plate is, how many candles are lit, or how many hierarchs attend. That is not the point; do not merely gratify your pride. Of course, if the bishop comes, that is good—very good—because he reads certain prayers, and these are no small matter. I do not have the Book of Needs with me, or I would read them to you so that you could hear what they say.

Look at what those prayers say and how greatly we need them, both for ourselves and for our loved ones who are there. But even when you cannot do things in that way, you can still help simply by offering a prosphoron loaf. The secret of the matter is this: how can you bring your loved one into contact with Christ? Saint John of Euchaita says, “It is good for the lantern to go in front. But often, in the darkness, even when it comes from behind, it still gives light.” This is what he meant. When someone waits until late in the day, as we do when we come at the end of the Liturgy, and then brings the prosphoron to the priest, what can the priest do with it by then? He will simply commemorate the name. He needs it from the evening before or very early in the morning, at the Proskomide. But as I have unfortunately seen even here, we often arrive so late that we hear neither the Apostle nor the Gospel.

Of course, some people have genuine reasons and cannot come. But others have no reason; they are simply ignorant, and so they do not come. And their loved ones, waiting there, remain without a money order, without a letter, without a parcel. Have you ever served at the front? Ask me—I served there five times. They would call out the names, and everyone would receive letters, money orders, and parcels, while some received nothing at all. How do you think those men felt? Had they left no one behind, or had they left only enemies and no friends? We shall understand this only when we pass beyond the grave, I tell you. So, when the priest removes a small particle that morning in memory of Nicholas, Katina, George, and the others, and later places it into the Blood of the Lamb and says, “Wash away, O Lord, by Thy precious Blood, the sins of Thy servants here commemorated,” this brings the departed greater consolation than anything else.

Afterward, the departed partake indirectly. We receive Holy Communion directly because we are present; they partake indirectly. This is their beautiful hour, the day of the departed. And should I also bring some kollyva, the memorial wheat? Bring it, so that when it is distributed, someone else may take a little in his hand and say, “May God forgive him.” Many people who themselves need the prayers connected with the kollyva receive some and pray that the departed may be forgiven. This is where discernment is needed when we hold a memorial service. We should invite faithful people, people who will say, “My God,” and whose prayer can stir and move Christ. It should not be only relatives who put on a tie and say, “I have no black socks to wear.” Wear red ones if you must, but have purity within you, so that you can pray. People need to know these things. The subject I am speaking about, which we have touched upon tonight, would require ten talks—not for me to cover in a single hour these eternal matters of death, the Resurrection, and...

the preservation and assistance of people beyond the grave through memorial services. May God grant that, at some other time and on some greater occasion, we may speak about these things again.

Ποιο λόγο έχει θεσπιστεί το πρώτο αυτό Ψυχοσάββατο, και θα βρείτε μέσα στα άλλα να λέει και το εξής: Ότι όλοι θα αναστηθούμε εις ηλικίαν μίαν, 33 ετών. Αλλά ποιος το πιστεύει ότι θα αναστηθεί; «Έχασα εγώ τον άνθρωπό μου», μου λες εμένα. Τι ήταν, κλειδί ήταν ο άνθρωπος που τον έχασες; Αντικείμενο είναι ο άνθρωπος που τον έχασες; Χάνονται οι άνθρωποι; Δεν διάβασες ποτέ σου την Αποκάλυψη: «Καὶ ἔδωκεν ὁ θάνατος τοὺς νεκρούς», και έδωσε η γη, η θάλασσα τους εν αυτή νεκρούς; Αυτό δεν διάβασες ποτέ σου; Δεν διάβασες ποτέ σου και δεν πρόσεξες ποτέ σου την προφητεία του Ιεζεκιήλ, την οποία διαβάζει η Εκκλησία όταν επιστρέψει ο Επιτάφιος από την περιφορά; Δεν κρατάς εκείνο στο χέρι; Πήγαινε εκεί πέρα. Δεν του έδειξε του Ιεζεκιήλ ποιον τρόπο θα ξαναγίνουμε άνθρωποι;

Ένας άπιστος, ένας βλάσφημος, ένας ανήθικος, ένας που έκανε τη ζωή του εδώ μακριά από την Εκκλησία, μακριά από τον Θεό, μακριά από τα μυστήρια, καταθέτει κι αυτός έναν κόρακα στο θησαυροφυλάκιο του Άδου. Και αύριο θα εισέλθει μέσα κόρακας. Και οι μεν θα αναστηθούνε και οι δε θα αναστηθούνε, αλλά οι μεν να είναι μαζί με τον Θεό και οι άλλοι να είναι μαζί με τον σατανά. Ανάληψη της Θεοτόκου, Ευαγγέλιο, Ευαγγελισμός, και κόλαση. Μα ο Θεός έφτιαξε κόλαση για τον άνθρωπο;

Έφτιαξε Βασιλεία. «Δεῦτε, κληρονομήσατε τὴν ἡτοιμασμένην Βασιλείαν ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου». Μα δεν έχει κόλαση; Έχει και κόλαση, αλλά την έχει για τον διάβολο. «Πορεύεσθε εἰς τὸ πῦρ τὸ αἰώνιον». Για μας; Όχι. «Τὸ ἡτοιμασμένον τῷ διαβόλῳ καὶ τοῖς ἀγγέλοις αὐτοῦ». Αλλά αυτόν ήθελες συμβουλάτορα, με αυτόν έζησες τη ζωή σου, εμένα δεν με δέχτηκες, εμένα με βλασφήμησες σταυρωτά. Κατά συνέπεια, έμεινες μ’ αυτόν και η προώθησή σου είναι μ’ αυτόν. Τι κατηγορούμε, λοιπόν, τον Θεόν ότι έχει κάνει κόλαση για τον άνθρωπο; Η κόλαση είναι για τον σατανά και ο Παράδεισος, η Βασιλεία των Ουρανών, είναι για τον άνθρωπο. Αλλά ο άνθρωπος δεν κάνει άξια της Βασιλείας και, κατά συνέπεια, όταν εγώ δουλεύω στα καλουπάκια, στην οικοδομή του διαβόλου, θα πάω να πληρωθώ από του Χριστού τα καλουπάκια, από του Χριστού την οικοδομή; Πώς, με αυτόν;

Χρειάζεται φιλοσοφία, αλλά δεν θέλουμε να δούμε. Δεν θέλουμε να δούμε. Έχουμε σύγχρονα παραδείγματα. Δεν είναι ανάγκη ο άνθρωπος να φτάσει πίσω εκεί και να ψάξει να βρει άλλους. Συγχρόνως να δει, πρέπει αμέσως να γίνει μετριόφρων. Αμέσως να έρθει στον εαυτό του και να πει: «Θεέ μου, αν εγώ φύγω απόψε;». Ποιος είπε σε σας, αγαπητέ, θα γυρίσετε στο σπίτι; Ποιος είπε σε σας να τα ξημερώσουμε; Ποιος μας είπε σε σας να τα βραδιάσουμε; Και ποιος σκέφτεται, εν προκειμένω, όσο κανένας δεν μας ενεπιστεύθη αυτό και δεν μας το είπε σε σας, ποιος σκέφτεται, εν προκειμένω, ότι σήμερα ταξιδεύει και θα βρεθεί ενώπιον του Κυρίου του;

Ξανασηκώνεται. Θα σηκωθεί η αυλαία για κρίση, δεν έχει περιθώριο. Ο Χριστός τα είπε αυτά, ότι όλοι μας, και πλούσιοι και φτωχοί, και δυνατοί και αδύνατοι, και μορφωμένοι και όχι, μεγιστάνες και απλοί, θα περάσουμε από την πόρτα του θανάτου. Το αν ο πλούσιος πέθανε δύο μέρες αργότερα, δεν χάθηκε ο κόσμος, έφαγε λίγα στέικ παραπάνω, δεν χάθηκε ο κόσμος. Αυτό δεν είναι να το συζητεί κανένας, γιατί λέμε καμιά φορά «όπου φτωχός και η μοίρα του». Σοβαρά τα λες αυτά; Δεν είναι έτσι τα πράγματα. Ο Χριστός, εν πάση περιπτώσει, ξεσκέπασε πέραν του τάφου και είπε ότι υπάρχει ζωή πέραν του τάφου. Και παρουσιάζει δυο καταστάσεις: πού επήγε ο μη πλουτών κατά Θεόν πλούσιος και μη κάνοντας έλεος στον συνάνθρωπό του, ούτε στον εαυτό του, και ταυτόχρονα πού επήγε ο άλλος. Αυτό δεν λέει τίποτα; Δεν μας το έχει πει; Τι θέλουμε, να μας κάνει, να μας πάρει από το χέρι;

«Δεν θέλετε ελθείν προς με, ἵνα ζωὴν αἰώνιον ἔχητε». Δεν θέλετε να έρθετε. Και σήμερα ο άνθρωπος, γιατί δεν θέλει τον Χριστό; Γιατί δεν τον θέλουμε τον Χριστό εμείς; Γιατί μας ελέγχει τον παράνομο βίο, μας ελέγχει το παράνομο κρεβάτι, τον παράνομο σύνδεσμο, το παράνομο πεζαχτά. Γι' αυτό, την παράνομη χύτρα μας τα ελέγχει. Και γι' αυτό δεν τον θέλουμε τον Χριστό. Αλλιώς, αν ο Χριστός τα «μη» και τα «ου» που λέει τα πει «ναι», δεν θα τον θέλουμε; «Πού ήσουνε τόσο καιρό; Πού είσαι;». Μας επιτρέπει τη μοιχεία, μας επιτρέπει την πορνεία, μας επιτρέπει, θέλουμε κι εμείς. Δεν το είπε ο Χριστός, ούτε θα το πει ο Χριστός. Δεν τον θέλουμε λοιπόν εμείς τον Χριστό, αυτή είναι η αλήθεια. Και είδατε τι στιχομυθία έγινε με εκείνον τον Πλούσιο και με τον Αβραάμ εκεί πέρα. «Πέμψον», λέει, «Λάζαρον να βάψει το δάχτυλο, να βάψει», το πιάνετε;
