Summary

The lecture confronts doubt about life beyond the grave and argues that earthly existence is preparation for eternity. Christ’s creation of sight for the man born blind is offered as evidence that the Creator can recreate damaged or dead human nature. The lecture concludes that death or the sudden return of Christ will bring every person before God, making faith, repentance, and spiritual readiness urgent.

In the middle of last month, if you remember, we had that familiar sequence of events amid the confusion in Athens. More specifically, we were trying to determine what had been brought from there to Athens and how the investigation enabled those very words to reach us. These were passages from Holy Scripture—whatever we ourselves had examined—because this is what we always discuss with you and try to make easier to understand.

This was not something that concerned only the people of that time; it concerns us and everyone else as well. People wrestle with these questions: Is there truly another life? Is there life beyond the grave? Will we one day manage, as it were, to escape the grave? On another occasion we learned that all the writings from the earliest Christian centuries are filled with testimony about Jesus—the Ascension, Holy Scripture, the Annunciation, and Hesychios the Priest.

Whether they want it or not, what God wills shall come to pass. The dead will rise. They say that there is no life beyond the grave, but by the time some people understand the truth, it will be too late, for reality itself will stand revealed before them. They simply refuse to see it. Yet we must see it beforehand by faith. Imagine two unborn children in a womb, talking to one another. “Is there anything outside this place where we are?” One says, “Of course there is.” The other says, “No, there is not. Nothing else exists; this is all there is.” The same dispute that takes place between them is taking place among us now.

When they are finally born and pass through the door of their mother’s womb, they will see that another life exists, and they will be ashamed of the things they discussed and philosophized about while they were still within her. This is very much like our own condition and like the foolish end a person imagines for himself. He thinks he will be placed in a ditch among a few cypress trees and simply disappear. Let him consider his own person: how can the truth about him be merely death and disappearance? It is good for a person to think about this, because if he does not wish to struggle for the prize, he will not train for the contest. He will see neither the angels nor the new fire, because for him they supposedly do not exist.

I must be certain that something lies beyond, that the human person is not merely an object that can be destroyed and vanish into obscurity. Even by reflecting on the matter, a person can recognize that human existence cannot simply come to an end. But that is not the real reason for his denial. He refuses to go any further because he does not want to act accordingly. He does not want to give up certain so-called pleasures of this world. There is also his egotism, which makes him think that he is the center of the world. Yet the world was not made merely for this passing life and the things we see. There is another reality to come. This, of course, is a question that concerns every person in the world.

Our conviction and our consolation are that the grave is not the end. A person was not born simply to appear in this world and meet his end in the grave. He was not born in order to die and be buried; he dies in order to pass onward. The destiny of the human person is wondrous; these are realities indeed. This life is only the antechamber, a station on the way to that other state. Our condition here is temporary in comparison with that one. Yet this temporary life has consequences for eternity. This passing life here has its answer and fulfillment in eternity. Even if a person sets foot upon this earth for only a few minutes, his life immediately has consequences for eternity.

He must also deprive himself of certain things and undertake the struggle required of him. Consider the fulfillment of the prophecies in the person of Jesus. We knew beforehand when He would be born, where He would be born, how He would be born, what He would do, how He would preach, how they would crucify Him, and that He would rise on the third day. This entire prophetic history surrounding Jesus makes Him a...

...person clearly marked out for everyone to see and certainly worthy of attention. He was never proved wrong in anything. To this day, Jesus has never been caught speaking falsely about anything. Indeed, some of our information comes from the enemies of Christ. We have it from His enemies, from the Jews who wanted to erase the memory of the Resurrection and paid a great deal of money to do so—a great deal. Yet that fabricated story did not prevail. Even today, most people here are deeply moved by the person and story of Jesus. He became a turning point: everything changed, even the way time itself was dated, and religions arose and were transformed. At the heart of it all stands the person of Jesus.

Simeon the God-receiver took Christ into his arms. What did he say to His mother? As Luke tells us: “This Child is appointed for the fall and rising of many,” and “for a sign that will be spoken against.” To this day, Christ remains a sign that is spoken against. As I have told you, the divine will has not left us without assurance concerning this matter of the Resurrection. I once told you that if we paid close attention to the texts we Orthodox read and hold in our hands—if we studied them deeply instead of reading them superficially—we would see that God has revealed even precisely how the human person will become whole again, though he falls into that furnace called the grave.

He will be remade—but how? If sometime you travel toward the Peloponnese from Athens, you will see a blast furnace on your left. What does that furnace do? Until then, all those scraps of old iron, twisted pieces, and rusted metal were useless. Now they are gathered from all over Greece and thrown into the blast furnace, and they emerge again as new iron, useful for rebuilding the country. If someone sees the line of trucks carrying all that old, rusted iron gathered there, and then sees new iron and new rods coming out through the door on the other side, he will ask, “What is happening here? How does this remaking take place?” Everything rusted is cast into the furnace.

So too, everything afflicted by cancer, tuberculosis, or madness will one day emerge from there made new. But man himself can do this with metal. Why, then, should God be unable to do it with man? And yet we do not reflect. Very often, the greatest truths are revealed through these little things. Something seemingly insignificant can suddenly open your nous, the spiritual intellect, and lead you to reflect and see the matter differently. Such a remaking, then, is going to take place. We too shall fall again into the furnace, as clay is broken down and fashioned anew by the potter. That is exactly what will happen. God has told us so. It was written about eight hundred years before Christ by a prophet named Ezekiel. People doubted the Resurrection even then. They could not understand it.

This is addressed to the person who doubts. Very well. I shall read you a prophecy. Historically, this is the prophecy read when the Epitaphios returns. When the Epitaphios comes back from the procession and enters the Church, this is the first prophecy that is read. It is a dialogue between God and Ezekiel. “The hand of the Lord came upon me,” he says—that is, “God took hold of me.” “And He brought me out in the Spirit.” In other words, He took him spiritually; He did not transport his whole body, but carried him in the Spirit. “And He set me down in the midst of the plain.” He brought me to a vast plain, and that plain was completely filled with human bones—an immense multitude of human bones.

“And He led me all around them.” He took me, the prophet says, and led me around that vast plain with all those bones. “And behold, there were very many upon the face of the plain.” What could I see there? Bones. “And behold, they were very dry”—utterly dried up. “And He said to me,” the prophet continues, posing the question, “Son of man, can these bones live?” Is it possible, He asks, for these bones to live and come to life again? “And I said, ‘Lord, You know.’” What do I know about such things? You know whether they can live.

Whether they can come to life again or not. What an exemplary answer! We, by contrast, think we know everything. We have an opinion about everything, though we truly understand none of the things about which we speak. The prophet’s answer is so sober and wise. What does this have to do with religion alone? If the electricity fails here and I am asked what went wrong, I will say, “Bring an electrician; I cannot tell you anything about it.” This man, then, gives us a splendid example.

“What do I know about these things?” he says. “You know, Lord.” Since I know, God says, pay attention to what I shall tell you. “And He said to me, ‘Prophesy over these bones and say to them.’” Speak to them, He says. Speak to dry bones? Yes, speak to them. “Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.” I am speaking on the Lord’s behalf, the prophet says; these are not my own words. “Thus says the Lord to these bones: Behold, I will bring upon you the spirit of life.” I shall bring you to life again. “And I will put sinews upon you”—you know what sinews are, the tissues that hold the body together—“and I will bring flesh upon you, and cover you with skin.”

Do you understand? Creation anew. “And I will put My Spirit within you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” These are the words He tells Ezekiel to speak to those dry bones. It is plainly shown that God will recreate the body from what has been broken down, beginning especially with the bones that, as you know, remain in our cemeteries. Some, of course, have been devoured and scattered by wild beasts or by fish in the sea after shipwrecks and drownings. Yet even the particles of those bones still exist. Science itself has acknowledged this since its advances in the study of the atom revealed that, even when matter is broken apart, its material components remain.

Scientists concluded that nothing is lost; its particles remain, whether in the same place, in the earth, or elsewhere. These are the words God tells him to speak. “So I prophesied as the Lord commanded me.” That is, I spoke and preached to those dry bones. “And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, an earthquake; and the bones came together, each one to its proper place.” God moved them across that plain and fitted them together; they were reassembled. The bones of the leg went to the leg, those of the hand to the hand, and those of the back and chest to their proper places—each person’s own bones, of course, not mine joined to someone else’s.

My bones did not go into my wife’s skeleton, nor yours into your father’s. No. “Each one came to its proper place,” the prophet says. “And I looked, and behold, sinews and flesh grew upon them, and skin covered them; but there was no spirit in them.” Once the skeletons had been formed, sinews appeared within them; then they were filled with flesh, and skin covered them. Yet there was no spirit in them. Each one had become a human body, we might say, but there was no life within it. It was as though the spirit—the soul—had been removed, leaving only a lifeless body behind when it was separated from that spirit. Pay attention...

I do not know whether you attend church and so will have the opportunity to hear it. The Gospel passage to be read tomorrow concerns the man born blind. This was not simply the healing of someone who had lost his sight during his lifetime. This man had been blind from birth, without properly formed eyes in their sockets, and Christ performed an act of creation upon him. For, as I told you earlier, people refuse to accept our God as Creator.

There is another story, told by a priest from Patras, about a Darwinist university student who accepted the theory that man evolved from the ape. She was speaking with a simple man and trying to convince him that God is not the Creator, but that we came from apes. The man said, “Do you understand? I am very surprised, because for the past hour I have been talking with a monkey.” She replied, “How can you speak to me like that? What do you mean, calling me that?” He answered, “Why are you offended? Is that not what you told me? Is that not what you believe?”

When she heard the conclusion drawn from her own claim, she took it as an insult. “How can you speak to me like that? So-and-so was my father—not an ape!” But what else should I call you? And yet man has sunk so low that he refuses to accept God the Creator, who made an eyeball with a little saliva and a little earth. When God created the world, there were no witnesses; there were no human beings. But now there were witnesses. We must recognize Him through His works: “I will show you that I am the Creator.” And with saliva and earth He makes eyes. Since all of you are educated to some degree, you know what the eye means within the human body. The eye is the most delicate and mysterious part of the creation of the human body. Does ophthalmology, even today, know exactly how it works? We do not know. How does man see? We do not know.

They may imitate it, yet they cannot truly reproduce it. They will say this, that, and the other, but they cannot explain how it happens. They know what happens, but they do not know how. And Christ created the eye anew, Scripture says, to help the person who is willing to acknowledge the truth and believe. He showed Himself, as it were, to be the One who fashioned it. This also shows me precisely how the re-creation will take place. First there are the skeletons. We return to the way Adam was when he first came from God’s hands. Then God breathed into him, made him a living soul, and the whole man came into being. Until then, he lay lifeless, like a dead body in a coffin, without a spirit. Thank you.

“And He said to me”—the account continues:

“Prophesy to the spirit; prophesy, son of man, and say to the spirit: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds”—that is, from the four points of the horizon—“and breathe upon these dead, that they may live.” And the spirit entered those who had been dead, and they lived and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great multitude. Then the Lord said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up, our hope is lost, and we are utterly cut off.’” Dry bones—what life can you expect from them now? What more can you hope for? The whole matter appears lost.

“Therefore prophesy and say to them: Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will open your graves and bring you up from your graves, and I will bring you into the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your tombs and bring you up from your graves, O My people. And I will put My Spirit within you, and you shall live; and I will place you in the land of Israel. Then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken and will act, says the Lord God.” And yet man comes along afterward and disputes the words of God. But he cannot erase them—not through heresy and not through unbelief. God’s word will always hold sway throughout the world and through all the ages, despite human stubbornness and opposition.

They have tried to erase it and remove it from their midst. Various heretics have arisen, yet the texts remain and continue their work. Even today, the archaeologist’s spade brings things to light that make unbelievers rub their eyes in astonishment. Some accept what these findings tell us, while others refuse. Through Ezekiel’s vision, then, God has shown us exactly how the Resurrection and the re-creation of mankind will take place. You see, man is always arguing about this. He does not want to accept it, because it does not suit him. I have presented one testimony; now let me present another truth. The next testimony comes from the Apostle Paul. In his First Epistle to the Thessalonians, the Apostle Paul writes:

Among other things—in his first letter, since he wrote two Epistles to the Thessalonians—he says the following in chapter four, verse thirteen. This passage from the Apostle to the Church is read at funerals. When someone dies, both the Gospel passage concerning the Resurrection and the Apostle concerning the Resurrection are read, so that those left behind may understand that the one who has departed is not lost and that one day, whether we want it or not, that person will rise. Do you know how he puts it? “But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep.” I do not want you to lack knowledge concerning those who have fallen asleep—what becomes of them and what will happen to them.

“That you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.” Some have no hope in the Resurrection and say, “I have lost my loved one.” The Antichrist did not take your loved one; neither did a thief. Yet they say, “I have lost my loved one.” Saint Paul tells us not to grieve like those who have no hope in the Resurrection, for we do have hope. “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again”—as I told you he writes to the Corinthians, if Christ has not risen, then our faith is in vain; we are the most pitiable of men, and we are false witnesses of God because we testified that He raised Jesus. We believe, then, that Jesus died and rose again. “Even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep through Jesus.” Thus, God will one day raise all who have died through Jesus.

“For this we say to you by the word of the Lord.” I am not telling you this on my own authority, he says; this is not some clever idea of mine. These are the words of God. “That we”—and notice that he says “we”; I will explain why I point this out—“we who are alive and remain until the Second Coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who have fallen asleep.” He is speaking about the Second Coming (Parousia) of the Lord. This is the Second Coming. His first coming has already taken place, and we know its results. By saying “we,” Saint Paul includes himself. In other words, he does not know when the Second Coming will occur. It might happen tonight, tomorrow, or in our own days. He does not say “you”; he says “we,” including himself among those who might remain until His Second Coming, however long it may seem to delay.

This teaches us that every person must believe that one day he will meet Christ in one of two ways. Whether he believes it or not, however much he protests and does whatever he pleases, it will happen. The first way is the one Saint Paul describes: the Second Coming will take place, and Christ will appear again. The other way is that we ourselves will go and knock at His door through death. Once a person has laid aside the body and departed from sight, the condition in which the lens of death finds him will be his condition in eternity, with all its consequences. Here Saint Paul is telling us that the Second Coming may happen at any moment. As the Lord says elsewhere, in the days of Noah people were marrying, giving in marriage, working, and carrying on with their lives.

Then the heavens opened, the flood began, and it overtook them suddenly. In exactly the same way, the Second Coming of God will occur before man realizes what is happening—“in the twinkling of an eye.” Therefore man must remain watchful and guard his soul. “The Lord Himself will descend from heaven.” God will come down again. Indeed, in the Apocalypse, John saw Him.

“Behold, He is coming with the clouds of heaven, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him”—those who nailed Him and pierced His side, and so forth. On that day we shall see Him as He comes. “And the dead in Christ will rise first.” In chapter fifteen of First Corinthians, the Apostle Paul explains how this will happen. He presents the Resurrection of the dead in two stages. When God comes according to His plan—that is, when Christ comes—the graves will open. Whether we want it or not, the graves will open. And when they open, those who believed in Christ will rise first. They will go forth to meet Him, just as we go to the outskirts of a city or village to welcome someone who is arriving.

In any case, Saint Paul says here that we shall rise. “Then we who are alive and remain.” When Christ comes at the Second Coming, first the graves of the faithful, the Christians, will open, and then those of us who are still alive will be changed. For when He comes at the Second Coming, there will be people on earth who will not have fallen asleep—that is, they will not have died and risen. These people will be transformed, as Saint Paul says here: “Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord.” We shall go forth to welcome Him. “And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another.” Comfort those who think that people die only to remain buried, so that they will not grieve without hope.

With this information concerning the Second Coming, he again offers consolation to those who mourn their loved ones and are overwhelmed by the thought of the darkness of the grave. Very well, Saint Paul said, “We who are alive.” But nearly two thousand years have passed since he included himself among them. So, someone may say, two thousand years have gone by and nothing has happened—no Second Coming, nothing at all. Saint Peter answers this question, as though in agreement with Saint Paul and in anticipation of this objection. I shall read from his Second Epistle, chapter three, beginning with the first verse: “Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle.”

He wrote both a first and a second epistle. What does he say? “In both of them I stir up your sincere mind by way of reminder.” I want to prompt all of you to pay attention to certain things. “That you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior.” I wish to remind you of what the Prophets and Apostles said concerning the coming of Christ. What must you understand first? Above all, he says, you must know this: “Scoffers will come in the last days.” In the last days, people will come who mock the things of God. It is as though Saint Peter were looking directly at our own time.

They say, “No one has risen to this day.” But “this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water.” Saint Peter takes us back to creation, when previously there was no water, no heaven—nothing at all.

Yet from nothing, water came into being, and the earth came into being. And where does it stand today? What does science say? Where does the earth stand? It hangs over the waters. How does it remain there? It is a Mystery. What do we sing during Holy Week? “He who hung the earth upon the waters.”

The flood took place, Mount Ararat remains, and today science has even found traces of the Ark and comes to vindicate Holy Scripture. “But the heavens and the earth which now exist are kept in store by the same word, reserved for fire until the day of judgment and the destruction of ungodly men.” This earth and this heaven, by the same word of God, will one day be burned; they will one day pass away, when the judgment of ungodly men takes place. “But, beloved, do not forget this one thing: that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” It has not truly been a long two thousand years. What are two thousand years before eternity? What are 969 years before eternity? What are 930 years before eternity?

What are such spans of time? Some people even try to shorten the nights. Were years different then? A day still had twenty-four hours. The sun rose and the sun set. Why tell me that years were somehow different then? On what grounds? But we always measure everything by our own arithmetic, and, being transient human beings, we speak about such matters from within those narrow limits. “The Lord is not slow, but is patient toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to metanoia (repentance).” He gives us more time; He delays,

so that more people may enter. “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night”—like a thief who lies in wait and steals while the master of the house is asleep. “In that day the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.” Man does not believe this.

John saw this new earth and this new heaven, because the first earth will pass away, as it is written in Holy Scripture. This was revealed not only after Christ, but also before Christ through Isaiah, who says that the heavens and the earth will pass away.

In chapter 21 of the Apocalypse, John saw these things: “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.” He saw them—he truly saw them. These are matters of the utmost seriousness. That is why the Apostle took care to provide those who are willing with what they need in order to stand firm. But for those who are unwilling, as you understand, all this is regarded as a fairy tale, and that has its consequences.

“Since all these things are to be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness?” Since we expect, he says, that everything will be dissolved, and that we will find ourselves facing a situation we did not expect, how should we live? What way of life is truly for our good?

For those who are willing, then, there is light, if they truly want to learn how clearly God has set forth these matters. For many, of course, that willingness is absent. Otherwise, they would listen to Him. Many acknowledge Him, yet do not heed Him. They hear, but they do not obey. Thank you.

Let each person listen to what is for his own good, because whether we want it or not, the curtain will one day fall. I think, therefore, that while there is still time, we too must reflect seriously on these things. That is what I wanted to say today, as a continuation of our previous discussion about those who refused to acknowledge the Resurrection. Holy Scripture says that the Resurrection will take place, and one can find it foretold fifteen hundred years before Christ. Pascha means exodus; Pascha means passage; Pascha means crossing over. For us, however, Pascha has come to mean simply eating well. “We had a real Pascha,” many say whenever they have eaten well, whether or not it is actually the day of Pascha.

That is what many people say whenever they have eaten well, regardless of whether it is the day of Pascha.

In Exodus, one of the five books of the Pentateuch in Holy Scripture, chapter 12 presents the prototype of Pascha. Pascha is connected with the exodus of the Hebrews from Egypt. This is not merely a biblical account; it is also a historical event: the Hebrews truly spent four hundred years in Egypt. More recently, underwater investigations have even found remains associated with Pharaoh’s passage through the sea and the destruction of his chariots there. Historians are thus compelled to acknowledge that the Bible is true and that the events it records really took place. There is even a book entitled Faith and the Spade, meaning that archaeology has shown the biblical accounts to be reliable. You may remember from school the grain stores of Pharaoh and the forced labor imposed upon the Hebrews. More specifically, Pascha is connected with the tenth plague of Pharaoh.

It is connected with that plague and with the event for which Pharaoh himself was responsible.

The decree was given, and in a single night all the firstborn of the Egyptians were slain. After this, the Egyptians could no longer prevent the Hebrews from leaving; indeed, they wanted to be rid of them. Yet Pharaoh later changed his mind. He was about to lose six hundred thousand laborers who had helped build the cities of Egypt. Among the Hebrews who departed from Egypt, six hundred thousand were men capable of labor and, as we might say today, of bearing arms. Pharaoh therefore had strong economic reasons for keeping them, and that is why he had continually prevented them from leaving.

Despite the plagues God sent, Pharaoh would not agree and would not yield. The tenth plague, then, was this: in a single night every Egyptian household would have someone dead. If a household had no child, its firstborn animal would die. Such was the decree. But God had taken every precaution for the Hebrews. He commanded Moses that on the tenth day of that month—rather as we would say the tenth of March—each household was to obtain a lamb. And that lamb was to be of a particular kind.

It had to be without blemish, with no defect at all: not lame, not blind, but perfectly healthy, and one year old—that is, no more than a year old. God commanded the Hebrew households that if one family had too few members to consume the lamb, they should join with a neighboring family, because the whole lamb had to be eaten in a single night. This is the origin of families and neighbors celebrating Pascha together. They were to keep the lamb until the fourteenth day of the month.

For five days: the tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth. On the afternoon of the fourteenth day, before sunset, they were to slaughter the lamb and collect its blood in a basin.

With that blood they were to mark—to paint, take note—the entrances of their homes. Using a sprig of hyssop, a plant somewhat like basil, they would take the blood and sprinkle it upon the doorposts. A doorway has a lintel above and two side posts. They were to mark all three places: the top and the two sides, with that blood.

What would be the result? The angel who passed through that night to slay the firstborn of the Egyptians would not enter any house upon which he saw that blood. By the power of that blood, therefore, the firstborn of the Hebrews would be spared, and death would not come upon them. The lamb was not to be eaten boiled or raw, but roasted over the fire. They were not to remove its head or its entrails; the lamb was to remain whole.

They would place it on a spit, roast it, and support it upon two forks. Those in the house would eat it little by little without breaking its bones, with their waists girded, their sandals on their feet, and a staff in hand, ready for the journey and the exodus—their Paschal departure. If they could not eat it all because they had miscalculated and fewer people came than expected, whatever remained...

They burned it in the fire the next morning, so that nothing would remain.

You may ask: what is this, and what does it signify? It signifies the sacrifice of Christ. That lamb, which was offered then and whose blood was given for the protection of the Hebrews, is a prototype of Christ. Christ likewise entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and was slain on Friday afternoon. Like the Hebrews’ lamb, He remained in Jerusalem on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. On Friday afternoon He was slain and sacrificed, fulfilling the type of that Paschal lamb. The command also required that the entrails not be removed; they were to be washed, left inside, and roasted with the lamb. Its head was not to be cut off, nor were its legs to be severed; they were washed and left attached. This again signifies Christ, who offers Himself whole as food for mankind. We know that when a person today receives the Lamb of God, Christ, in Holy Communion, the priest places only the smallest portion into his mouth with the holy spoon. Yet within that Bread is the whole Body of Christ. Does he not receive the Body and Blood of Christ?

Together with the Blood of Christ, the whole Christ must necessarily be given to the person. Although He is divided among those who receive Him, He is “broken and not divided, ever eaten yet never consumed.” This is a Mystery. How is it possible that, though He is divided and so many receive Him, we all receive Him whole? A simple example may help. The sun is one, yet wherever you place a mirror—representing a person—you will see the whole sun reflected in it. Break the mirror into a hundred pieces, and each piece will contain the image of the one sun. Yet the sun remains one. This gives us some sense of how it is with the Lord.

A person receives the whole Christ: the inward being of Christ, the nous of Christ, the feet of Christ, and the hands of Christ. In other words, the whole person, soul and body, becomes Christ-like. The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, offered Himself whole in order to transform human nature. A great Father of the Church, Basil the Great, says that a person receives twenty-three graces when he partakes of Holy Communion and thereafter possesses these graces. Christ is the only Redeemer of the world, and He had to be made known to everyone.

For this very reason, He was prophesied, prefigured, and foreshadowed not only among the Hebrews, but even among the pagans, through their philosophers and religious leaders. They all wrote of this awaited Messiah. If you read the accounts of the Crucifixion—which are historical events that no one can dismiss, and which were handed down to mankind by the Hebrews themselves—you will find that Christ died upon the Cross at a moment they did not expect, when normally He should not yet have died. When they went to Pilate and asked for the body of Christ so that they might bury it, Pilate questioned whether He was already dead and said, “It is not possible; too few hours have passed.”

“Is that possible?” Pilate, the Roman governor, summoned the centurion—the officer in command of the detachment there—and confirmed from him that Christ had indeed died. And what happened next? They came and broke the legs of the others, for Christ was not alone on the Cross. There were two other crosses as well. “He was numbered with the transgressors”; there were also two thieves. They broke the legs of those two so that they would die and could be buried before the sun set on Friday. The Jewish Passover began on the Sabbath, and otherwise they could not have buried them, for they would have been considered defiled

and consequently would have been unable to eat the Passover. Notice how even this detail fulfilled the type. But when they came to Christ, they found Him already dead. A Roman soldier thrust a spear into Him to make certain that this was true. Then blood and water flowed from His pierced side: the water signifies Baptism, and the blood, Holy Communion. These are the two fundamental Mysteries that sprang from the pierced side of the Lord and are necessary for man’s salvation. Indeed, according to Tradition, the Roman soldier who pierced Him—the centurion, the commanding officer I mentioned—had

an injured eye; he could not see well out of one eye. Someone spoke to him rather contemptuously, as though saying, “Go on, you half-blind man! Can’t you see that He is dead?” So he struck Him with the spear. A drop from the Lord’s side splashed into the officer’s eye, and it was healed immediately. You may ask why Christ died sooner than the other two. The other two were dying in the natural course of crucifixion. Their blood was flowing, and death would eventually have come.

Their legs were therefore broken, causing further injury so that they would die more quickly and be buried. But our Christ died sooner. I do not know whether you have paid attention to the events of Great Friday. Do you know what the Evangelist John says? After Christ had provided for His mother—for His mother had come as far as the Cross together with John—He turned to her and said, “Woman, behold your son.” See how God speaks here, how the child speaks to His mother according to His humanity—to the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), who had become His mother—while the one standing beside her beholds Him also as God. “Behold your son.” Then, from the Cross, He turned to John and said, “Behold your mother.” From that hour John took her into his own home, and she later died in his care. Here we may open a brief parenthesis.

This gesture of Jesus from the Cross toward His mother proves that the Theotokos had no other children, contrary to the accusations of Protestants and other Western Christians who, quite clearly, have not studied these matters deeply. For if she had other children—the four sons mentioned as the Lord’s brothers, together with at least two daughters, since the text also says, “and His sisters,” making six children in all—would her Son have taken His mother away from those six children and entrusted her to a friend? Would a mother have left her six children to go to a friend of one of her sons? And would those children themselves have wanted their mother to be given to someone else? This act alone, this single gesture of Christ, proves what the actual fact was. The Gospel then tells us that Christ said, “It is finished.” He saw that His work had been completed.

“And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” How does a human being die, and how did Jesus die? He died in the reverse order. A man gives up his spirit and then bows his head. But He, “bowing His head, gave up His spirit.” He died at the moment He willed, at the proper moment, so that His legs would not be broken. “Not one of His bones shall be broken,” just as the bones of the Hebrews’ lamb were not broken, so that He might be clearly identified by the sign. “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.” This entire Hebrew type was intended to prefigure the sacrifice of Jesus, so that He might be unmistakably recognized.

These prophecies and types concerned the person of Christ, so that people might recognize Him, because there is no other way for man to stand before God. Through Him, as our Church says, man returns to his eternal homeland, for every human being must return to the place from which he departed. Jesus came to fulfill this role, and He was prefigured there in ancient times. God said to Moses, “When you do this, your children will not be slain because of the blood.” It was not because of their own worth, as though they were good children whom God therefore protected. No; the blood had to shield them beforehand. From this it is shown that, as God said then, you are to regard this as the Passover

which the Lord performs for you. There the word “Passover” is heard for the first time: the Passover which the Lord performs for you. He would provide the opportunity for them to escape from the earthly Pharaoh, pass through the sea and the wilderness, and enter the Promised Land. In precisely the same way, when a person receives the Lamb of God, Christ, he escapes from the spiritual Pharaoh, who is the devil, and passes through the sea of Baptism and through the wilderness of this life toward the Promised Land. That event is the type, the prophetic foreshadowing. There is one more detail we should notice. Take a lamb to roast on a spit, and pass the spit through it in the usual way, from the head down toward the legs.

Imagine it upright. Stretch out its two front legs and bring its two lower legs together. It forms the image of Christ crucified. Take one of the spits we use at Pascha. What will it reveal to the person who understands, and what will it mean to the person who does not?

Indeed, to turn the spit, you must attach a piece behind it in such a way that it forms a cross at the back. Thus you have the Cross and Christ crucified. This type was established fifteen hundred years before Christ, so that people might notice it and recognize Him beforehand. Yet we eat the lamb and leave the spit behind; we do not want Christ. We accept the gift Christ gives us, but we do not want Christ Himself. We accept the holiday given to us by the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ, but we do not want Christ. As the saying goes, we enjoy everything that belongs to John—everything he offers—except John himself. Do you understand?

For some people, Pascha is a superficial matter, though they imagine they know better what Pascha is: every fine cut of meat, every good barbecue, every lively feast—and nothing beyond that. Yet this matter is far deeper. The point I would like to make is this: they observed it for eight days. It began on one Sabbath—from Friday evening—and ended on the following Sabbath. The commandment was that anyone wishing to eat the Passover had to be circumcised. If he was not circumcised, he was not a friend of God and therefore had no right to eat the Passover. It is the same with us today: if a child has not been baptized, we do not give that child Holy Communion. Thank you.

If you do not want the Church, then you will not receive Holy Communion; you will abstain because you are not in communion. In those days, circumcision was what reconciled man with God. God had also given this commandment: from the first day, all leaven was to be removed from the house. Throughout the days of their Passover, they were forbidden to keep leaven in the house. Leaven is a type of sin. He says, “You shall not eat anything leavened; you shall be unleavened and eat unleavened bread.” It was as though He were saying, “To eat the Passover, you must be clean.” If a house was found to contain leaven, its inhabitants were stoned.

It was forbidden. If you read someone who understood these matters better than we do—Paul, who was a Jew—then in the fifth chapter of First Corinthians you will find him saying, “Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.” At our Pascha, he says, it is not the Jewish Passover lamb that is sacrificed, but Christ, the Lamb of God. Therefore, he says, we must approach unleavened—that is, clean, repentant, and having made our confession. Otherwise, we bring about the opposite result. Remember also the gesture shown in the case of the prodigal son. The father did not allow the prodigal son to go directly from the pigsty to the place where the fatted calf was being served.

He changed his garment: “Bring out the first robe.” He changed his footwear, placed a ring on his hand, and only then brought him inside. This shows that, for a person to sit at the Paschal table—that is, to partake of Holy Communion, which for a Christian is not limited to Pascha once a year—he must first be made ready. “Whether today,” says the divine John Chrysostom, “or tomorrow, or whenever it may be,” each time a person receives Holy Communion, he celebrates Pascha. The commemoration of Pascha takes place once a year; but a person sits at the table where the fatted calf is served whenever he approaches to receive Holy Communion. Each time, he celebrates Pascha.

First of all, then, if a person wishes to be delivered from destruction and not lose his soul, he must take care to sprinkle his soul with the blood of the Lamb of God. There a lamb was slain; here Christ was slain. Consider Abraham as well, when he went up to sacrifice his son. Abraham’s sacrifice is an unmistakable type—a prophetic foreshadowing—of Christ’s sacrifice; I do not know whether you have studied it closely. Abraham goes to sacrifice his only-begotten son, Isaac. Isaac carries the wood up Mount Moriah. Do you know where Moriah is? It is where Golgotha stands today. Golgotha consists of three hills, and on one of them Abraham went to sacrifice Isaac.

When God told him, “Take him and go to sacrifice him,” they loaded wood onto an animal, because they did not know whether they would find any wood in the wilderness where they were going. Before they reached the mountain, however, God commanded that the wood be unloaded and placed on Isaac’s shoulders for him to carry up. Isaac did not know what was about to happen. Abraham held an axe in his hand and also carried fire. They had brought no sheep for the sacrifice, though he had told his son that they were going to offer a sacrifice. On the way, a conversation took place between Isaac and Abraham. Isaac said to Abraham, “Father, I am carrying the wood, and you are carrying the knife and the fire. But where is the sheep? What are we going to sacrifice? Where is the sheep?” What could Abraham tell him?

Could he say, “I am going to sacrifice you”? Instead he replied, “My child, God Himself will provide. Let us go on and not stop; we are going to offer sacrifice to God.” So they continued and climbed the mountain. Who carried the wood? Isaac carried it. They brought the wood to the summit, arranged it, and laid it in place. Abraham seized Isaac, laid him down, and turned his head so that he might cut it off. Suddenly a voice came from behind him: “Abraham, Abraham, do not lay your hand upon the child.” He turned to see where the voice had come from, and his attention was drawn away from Isaac. Behind him he saw a thicket, where a ram’s horns were caught in the branches. What, then, was God telling him? The type, the prophetic foreshadowing, was sufficient. There was no need for him to slay his son, for his son’s blood

could save no one. Another would come—the Lamb of God—who would be slain and, by His blood, would cleanse both Isaac and Abraham. “The type is enough for Me.” Christ ascends carrying His own wood upon His shoulder, the wood upon which He will be sacrificed. Eighteen hundred years earlier, Isaac ascends carrying his own wood, upon which he is to be sacrificed.

One ascends Moriah, and so does the other. Today, if you have visited the Holy Land and Jerusalem, you will know that beside Golgotha, at precisely the same elevation and about fifty meters away, there is a small hill marking the place where Isaac was offered. The Jews preserve it to this day, and I have photographed it for my slides. That type, that lamb, and that sacrifice formed a vivid prefiguration of Jesus.

The Crucifixion and death of Jesus, the Lamb of God, were prefigured in many different ways because it was necessary for people to recognize them. There is no other way for man to be reconciled with God. The only one who can reconcile man with God is the God-Man, Christ—the God-Man. If we may use such a phrase, the opposing sides were man and God; but it was man who stood against God, not God against man.

God is never hostile toward us. It is man who, in his selfish pride, has turned his back on God, just as he does today. Man coldly turns his back on God and says, “I take no account of You.” You take no account of Me? Eight feet and eight hands will carry you to your grave, and then you will take account of Me—but it will be too late. Man is foolish: he concerns himself with things he cannot keep, yet gives no thought to the things he will face for all eternity.

God accepts him, bears with him, arranges circumstances for him, and helps him in a thousand ways so that he may come to know Him, because it is to man’s benefit to know God. Yet man enjoys everything God has offered the human race, while rejecting God Himself. As the saying goes, he enjoys everything John has to offer, but rejects John himself. Many people who do not even want to see Christ will send Easter greetings, say, “Christ is risen,” and so forth. They will stand outside holding their candles, perhaps outside some fashionable church or on Lycabettus Hill, and say, “We celebrated the Resurrection.” They will want to eat the festive meal that night, even though all these things spring from a fundamental truth and teaching that they reject. But they will keep all the other customs: they will crack eggs, eat Easter bread, roast lambs, and so on. All these unbelievers who reject Him are being inconsistent.

This is exactly what Holy Scripture says: “Out of your own words I will judge you, wicked servant.” One day I will judge you by your deeds and by all your actions. For if God were to confront us with our own deeds, who could stand before Him? No one could stand. Now, I wanted to connect this with the preparation for Pascha in the following way. It is customary for certain people to come and receive Holy Communion at Pascha—an anonymous crowd. A person does not even know where he is trying to enter the Church; he does not know the Church, has no relationship with the priests, no relationship with Christ, and no relationship with the Mysteries. Yet because his grandmother once did it, because his grandfather once did it, because the older generations once took him to Church, he says that he is preserving this good custom.

But if he keeps nothing else, and if he does not approach properly to receive Christ, what good is this custom—for holiday greetings and until next year? Some mothers use a little chocolate, some Coca-Cola, some honey or sweets, right there before the Mystery, to persuade their children to receive Holy Communion. This is ignorance, dense darkness in the fullest sense of the word, concerning matters of immortality. Something similar happened the other day, on Sunday; I do not know whether you noticed it. People who had not even begun to fast, and who were not concerned about fasting at all, asked, “Were we allowed to eat fish this past Sunday, because it was the Annunciation, or because it was the Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross?” What kind of question is that? What does it mean to ask whether they could eat on Sunday? Do they not eat on the Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross? Do they not eat on the other days? They ate on Saturday and on the preceding Sunday, and they will eat this Sunday and the next.

The whole of Great Lent is a fast. It is not only the Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross. You want me to make a fine distinction about whether you may eat fish today, when tomorrow you will eat four plates of meat. You have merely changed your menu. There is such ignorance in the world, such a wretched state of affairs; people do not know what any of this is about. My beloved, a person may learn everything—all manner of cunning and every hidden secret—but if he has not come to know Christ, it would have been better for him not to have been born. Better not to have been born. If someone does not know Christ in this world, why did he come into it? Where will Christ come, and where is that person himself going? This is how man is: he must learn the how, the what, and the when—what is going to happen. This threefold knowledge is absolutely necessary for man. So, regarding one of these matters, I would like to tell you something I once heard: a confession made by Satan.

He says, “I am not afraid of those who receive Holy Communion. Only let them not come after Holy Confession and then receive Communion. For then they escape from me. Otherwise, I keep hold of them and enter one more mortal sin in my ledger.” For the person who comes leavened—that is, laden with sins—to eat the Pascha and receive the Lamb of God in Holy Communion does nothing other than take Christ and cast Him into a cesspit. The human soul must be cleansed, and it is cleansed in two ways: it is washed with soap and then rinsed. The washing with soap is metanoia—repentance—and Holy Confession. This is indispensable. Today, unfortunately, people confess to the psychiatrist.

Those who refuse to confess to a priest will fall ill. There is a difference between these two confessors: the psychiatrist and the priest who serves as one’s spiritual father. The psychiatrist leaves you carrying the things that burdened you when you came. The other takes them away. You leave the first still burdened, just as you entered; you leave the other feeling light. You feel different. A Mystery has taken place and, in a sacred and hidden way, has removed from within you a burden upon your soul—some uneasiness, some melancholy, something I cannot quite name. Only a confessor can take that away from you. I do not know whether, on another occasion, I read you some statistics from a certain...

...or rather, from some international organization, concerning how many mentally ill people there are in the world. I read it in a newspaper, if any of you remember, children.

There are 120 million mentally ill people in the world, and according to the statistics that number will reach 200 million. Five or six million are in Great Britain alone—and those are only the ones who have a card and an official file. Just think how many others are still outside the system. The farther man moves away from his spiritual father, the more those files will multiply. The number of psychiatrists and psychiatric hospitals will increase. Yet the heart of the problem does not lie there. So, if man simply chooses to use the way...

...that Christ has shown through His Church, things will change. He will think differently and feel differently. He will feel that his life has a purpose. He will see where he is going. He will be like a man riding a trolleybus who looks ahead, because all of us are traveling. I have now been speaking for about forty minutes. If you take your pulse, or place your hand over your heart and count an average of about seventy beats a minute, our hearts have beaten 2,800 times. And those 2,800 beats are 2,800 steps toward our grave. The heart does not go backward. It is the first organ to stop. What is that tick-tock it makes? It is saying, “I am taking you...”

“...toward your coffin.” You cannot stop it by any effort; if it stops now, you will arrive there more quickly. And yet man is carried along, traveling toward that destination. He cannot go backward. He cannot deny it. Do not tell me otherwise; those are human falsehoods. This is reality. So long as the pulse is beating, every beat is, as the villagers say, another footfall toward the grave. Each of us is drawing nearer to the day of his death. He will be laid in the grave; no one will escape. Has anyone escaped until today? Of all the millions who have passed through this world, not one. How, then, will we escape? Yet man refuses to reflect deeply on the fact that, at an unexpected moment, he will depart from this world. And even if we suppose that none of these things we are told are true...

...that they are nothing but fairy tales, as we might say, what have you lost? You slept better; you did not become a nervous wreck; you did not break up another marriage by taking someone else’s husband or wife and causing tears. You did not steal or gamble, and you were not used and drained by some supposed friend or lover. Is that bad? You lived calmly and peacefully, without fear, malice, and all the rest—is that bad? What harm came to you, my dear man? What did you lose? Let us suppose it is all nothing. But what if there is even one chance in a billion that what is being said is true? It is not merely one chance in a billion; it is entirely true. But even if there were only one chance, what then? Where is our wisdom? Where is our reason? What happened to the claim that man has progressed, risen higher, and become civilized? The man who has separated himself...

...who refuses to face reality and consider his immortal soul, and imagines that his soul is like some animal that will go as far as the grave and that nothing exists beyond it—what can be said of him? If there is nothing beyond the grave, we should have thrown away our sanity from the very day we first became aware of ourselves. Surely our only purpose cannot be to eat God’s eggplants, okra, and squash. Once again there are tears—rivers of tears. From humanity’s tears we could form oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, and even Greek oceans.

For every ninety-nine tears there is one smile—not laughter, merely a smile. That is what life has become today. Is that really all life is? No, it is not. There is something else to which the human soul clings, and because of it the soul endures, shows patient endurance and forbearance, and labors in this world for the sake of something beyond it. Many people may accept a job with lower wages because they know it provides a pension—a good pension—as well as medical care and other benefits. We commend such a person. We would consider very foolish the one who chooses higher wages but has no pension. That is how it is. A reasonable person will prefer to earn a little less at a job that offers some security for the future. The matter I am discussing with you is very much like this.

Therefore, if we wish to eat this Pascha—the Pascha of which I am speaking, the true Orthodox Pascha—we must come forward and partake of it. The way is metanoia—repentance—Holy Confession, Holy Communion, and Pascha. Then you truly celebrate Pascha with Christ, in both soul and body, and this brings the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. This, in brief, is what I wanted to tell you as the days of Pascha draw near. May God be your helper.

«Τούτων οὖν πάντων λυομένων, ποταποὺς δεῖ ὑπάρχειν ὑμᾶς ἐν ἁγίαις ἀναστροφαῖς καὶ εὐσεβείαις;» Όταν περιμένουμε, λέει, ότι θα διαλυθεί το παν και θα βρεθούμε στο κενό και θα βρεθούμε αντιμέτωποι μιας καταστάσεως που δεν περιμέναμε, πώς πρέπει, λέει, να πολιτευόμεθα; Πώς είναι συμφέρον να πολιτευόμεθα;

Θα μου πείτε: τι είναι αυτό, τι συμβολίζει αυτό; Αυτό συμβολίζει τη θυσία του Χριστού. Ο αμνός αυτός, ο οποίος προσφέρεται τότε και μάλιστα προσφέρεται το αίμα του εις ασφάλειαν των Εβραίων, είναι ο Χριστός, ο οποίος και αυτός εισέρχεται των Βαΐων στα Ιεροσόλυμα και σφάζεται την Παρασκευή το απόγευμα. Μένει στα Ιεροσόλυμα σαν τον αμνό εκεί των Εβραίων, Δευτέρα, Τρίτη, Τετάρτη, Πέμπτη, Παρασκευή. Την Παρασκευή το απόγευμα σφάζεται και θυσιάζεται, υπό τύπον του τυπικού εκείνου αμνού των Εβραίων. Τώρα, η εντολή είναι ότι δεν θα έπρεπε να λείπουν τα εντόσθια· θα πλυθούν και θα μένουν μέσα και θα ψηθούν μαζί. Δεν θα έπρεπε να είναι κομμένο το κεφάλι. Δεν θα έπρεπε να είναι κομμένα τα πόδια. Θα πλυθούν και θα μένουν επάνω. Αυτό πάλι συμβολίζει τον Χριστό, ο οποίος προσφέρεται εις τους ανθρώπους εις βρώσιν, εις φαγητόν, εμείς ξέρουμε. Όταν ένας άνθρωπος σήμερα κοινωνεί τον αμνόν του Θεού, τον Χριστόν, παρότι ο ιερεύς μέσα στην Αγία Λαβίδα τού βάζει απειροελάχιστον, ίσως, εντούτοις μέσα σε αυτόν τον Άρτον υπάρχει ολόκληρο το σώμα του Χριστού. Δεν κοινωνεί σώμα και αίμα Χριστού;

Σκεφτείτε το όρθιο, ανοίξτε του τα δυο μπροστινά πόδια και κολλήστε του τα δυο κάτω. Θα γίνεται ο Χριστός σταυρωμένος. Πάρετε μια σούβλα από αυτές που έχουμε το Πάσχα. Τι θα υπάρχει γι’ αυτόν που γνωρίζει και γι’ αυτόν που δεν γνωρίζει;

πάει το δίπλο? Μάλιστα, λέει, για να γυρίσετε τη σούβλα, πρέπει να βάλεις τεχνητώς ένα πράγμα πίσω που φτιάχνει ένα σταυρό στο πίσω μέρος για να τη γυρίσετε. Θα γίνει, λοιπόν, ο σταυρός και ο Χριστός σταυρωμένος. Και είναι χίλια πεντακόσια χρόνια προ Χριστού φτιαγμένος αυτός ο τύπος, για να τον προσέξουν οι άνθρωποι και να τον προλάβουν οι άνθρωποι. Κι εμείς, όμως, τρώμε το αρνί, αφήνουμε τη σούβλα, τον Χριστό δεν θέλουμε. Παίρνουμε το δώρο που θα μας δώσει ο Χριστός, τον Χριστό δεν θέλουμε. Παίρνουμε την αργία που θα μας δώσει η Σταύρωση και η Ανάσταση του Χριστού, τον Χριστό δεν θέλουμε. Απολαμβάνουμε όλα τα του Γιάννη, πλην του Γιάννη, καταλάβατε;

Όταν, λέει, του είπε ο Θεός «πάρε τον, να πάτε να τον θυσιάσεις», εφόρτωσαν σε ένα ζώο ξύλα, γιατί δεν ήξεραν εκεί που πάνε στην έρημο αν θα βρούνε ξύλα. Πριν φτάσουν, όμως, στο βουνό, εντολή από τον Θεό να ξεφορτώσει και τα ξύλα να τα πάρει ο Ισαάκ στον ώμο του να τα ανεβάσει. Δεν ξέρει ο Ισαάκ τι πρόκειται να γίνει. Ο Αβραάμ έχει πάρει στο χέρι του τσεκούρι και έχει πάρει και φωτιά. Πρόβατο δεν έχουν πάρει για θυσία. Στον γιο έχει πει ότι πάμε να θυσιάσουμε. Στον δρόμο γίνεται ένας διάλογος μεταξύ Ισαάκ και Αβραάμ και λέγει ο Ισαάκ στον Αβραάμ: «Πάτερ, ξύλα πηγαίνω εγώ, μάχαιραν και πυρ πηγαίνεις εσύ. Το πρόβατον πού; Τι θα θυσιάσουμε; Πού το πρόβατο;» Τι να του πει τώρα ο Αβραάμ;
