Summary

Paul’s preaching in Athens shows how readily people dismiss Christ’s Resurrection and the possibility of life beyond the grave. Christ’s healing of the man born blind is described as a visible act of creation that reveals His divine power to restore what is absent or destroyed. Peter answers mockery over the apparent delay of the Second Coming by recalling the prophets and warning that scoffers follow their own desires.

In our last talk, if you remember, we spoke about Paul, who came to Athens. More specifically, we spoke about the message he brought there to us Athenians. They listened to him gladly, up to a point—until he told them that Christ had risen. As we said, this seemed like nonsense to them, and they interrupted him.

This was not something that happened only to those people back then. It is a question that troubles almost everyone: whether there is another life, whether there is life beyond the grave, and whether one day we shall manage to escape the grave. I do not know whether you remember, but once, when we were speaking, I told you that the tombs of all the founders of religions are full; their bodies are still held within them—all except the tomb of Jesus. Only Christ’s tomb is empty. All the other tombs are full; as we said, their occupants remain fixed there.

Whether we want it or not, what God wills shall come to pass. One day we shall rise, and there is life beyond the grave. Of course, for some it will be too late when they understand this, when they are brought face-to-face with the reality. But they insist on seeing it first. Yet how can they see it beforehand if they refuse to believe?

Imagine two unborn children within the same womb, talking to one another. “Is there anything outside this place where we are?” One says that there is, while the other says, “There is not. Nothing else exists. This is all there is.” And so a dispute arises between them, just as it does among us now. And yet...

When nine months have passed and both emerge from their mother’s womb, they will see that another life does exist. They will be ashamed of the things they discussed while they were still in the womb, imagining themselves to be philosophers. The very same thing happens to many of us, and there is a deeper question still. Does man not desire to live eternally? Does he want to remain beneath a small patch of earth and a few cypress trees, and then disappear? Is this what the human person amounts to—that the grave should mean his dissolution and disappearance? For a human being, such a notion is utterly absurd.

If someone wished to reflect seriously, he should sit before a mirror—not looking at other people, but looking at himself—and ask: “What am I? How do I think? How do I act? How do I judge? How do I speak? How do I hear? What kind of being am I?” He would conclude that he is something of significance, not a mere nothing, not simply an object.

Can such a being simply be destroyed and vanish into oblivion? By reflecting, he himself would recognize that the human being is something so profound that the grave cannot be his end. But this is not the real reason for his unbelief. Man falters at this point: he does not want to live accordingly, and he does not want to deprive himself of certain so-called pleasures of this world. There is also his egotism, which will not release him. Yet egotism can sometimes bend before what a person sees, if there is even a little goodwill. In any case, this is a question that will always concern everyone who comes into the world—some more, some less: whether there is a Resurrection, whether there is another life, whether eternity exists. Our conviction, in any event, is that the grave is not the end, and that man...

...was not born merely to live in this world and then reach his end in the grave. No. Man was born to die to this world, and he dies in order to live. Man’s true life lies beyond the grave. This life, of course, is an antechamber, a struggle through which that other life is attained. Compared with that life, this one is only a firefly’s brief glimmer. Yet this little glimmer has consequences in eternity. This fleeting life here has consequences in eternity. Even if a person comes and sets foot upon this earth for only a few minutes, that life immediately has eternal significance. But man does not reflect upon this. He does not want to believe, he does not want to give up certain things, and by asserting his ego he goes no further. Yet we have not been left without guidance.

Concerning this knowledge—whether there is life beyond the grave and whether we shall rise—we have not been left without guidance. He who brought us here has given us a pattern by which we can understand how it will happen. As you know, and as we have said before, the enduring miracle is the fulfilment of the prophecies in the person of Jesus: it was known when He would be born, where He would be born, how He would be born, what He would do, how He would preach, how they would crucify Him, and that He would rise on the third day. This whole prophetic history of Jesus marks Him out as a person to whom everyone’s attention must be drawn. Jesus has never proved false in anything; to this day, He has never been found speaking falsely about anything.

Indeed, we have testimony even from Christ’s enemies. We have it from His friends, and we have it from the Jews who sought to erase the memory of the Resurrection and paid a great deal of money to do so. Nevertheless, they did not succeed, and today most people are still moved by the person and story of Jesus. He became a turning point: everything changed, even the reckoning of the years; altars and religions were overthrown, and at the heart of it all stands the person of Jesus. He is, of course, “a sign that will be spoken against,” as you know, and this too was prophesied. When the elder Simeon the God-receiver took Christ into his arms, what did he say to His mother? “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rising of many.” Because of Him, some will rise and others will fall. “And He will be a sign that will be spoken against.” To this very day, Christ remains a sign that is spoken against.

As I told you, God has given us knowledge; He has not left us without guidance even concerning the Resurrection. I once told you in passing that, if we paid close attention to the texts that we Orthodox read and hold in our hands—if we examined them deeply instead of reading them superficially—we would see that He has revealed even precisely how man will become whole again. Though he falls into that furnace called the grave, we are shown how he will be reworked and restored. If you ever travel toward the Peloponnese, as you leave Athens you will see a blast furnace on your left. What does that blast furnace do? Until then, all those pieces of scrap metal, old rims, rusted objects, and so forth were useless.

They are collected from all over Greece and thrown into the blast furnace. Then they emerge again as new iron, useful for rebuilding the country. If someone sees the line of trucks carrying all that old, rusted scrap iron gathered there, and then sees new iron bars coming out through another door on the far side, he will ask, “What is happening here?” A complete reworking is taking place. Everything rusted is thrown in; whatever was cancerous, tubercular, or deranged goes in, and one day something new will come out. If man can do this, why should God be unable to do it? Yet we fail to reflect, even though the greatest truths are often revealed through small things such as these. From what seems like nothing, your nous—the spiritual intellect—can suddenly open, and you can begin to reflect and see the matter in an entirely different way.

Such a reworking, then, is going to take place. We shall fall once more into a furnace, and just as a potter breaks down the clay and fashions it anew, so exactly shall it be with us. God has told us this. It was written about eight hundred years before Christ by a prophet named Ezekiel. People doubted the Resurrection even then. They could not understand it, could not grasp it, and so they questioned it. I shall therefore read you a prophecy. In case you do not know its liturgical setting, this prophecy is read when the Epitaphios returns from the procession among us Orthodox. It is the first prophecy read when the Epitaphios enters the Church. It is a dialogue between God and Ezekiel. “The hand of the Lord came upon me,” he says...

“The hand of the Lord”—that is, God took hold of me—“and brought me out in the Spirit.” In other words, He took him spiritually, not bodily. “And He set me down in the midst of the plain.” He brought me to a vast plain, “and it was full of human bones.” It was completely filled with human remains, with human bones. “And He led me all around them.” He took me around that immense plain, which contained all those bones. “And behold, there were very many upon the face of the plain, and behold, they were very dry”—utterly dried-up remains.

He spoke to me and put this question to me: “Son of Man, can these bones live?” Can these bones come back to life? “And I said, ‘O Lord, You know these things.’” What do I know about such matters? You know whether they can live again or not. What a beautiful answer. We, by contrast, think we know everything. We have an opinion about everything, though we truly understand none of the things about which we speak. We act sensibly in every field except religion. If my electricity fails and I say, “Something has gone wrong here,” you will call an electrician; I can tell you nothing about it. If the radiator springs a leak, you will call a plumber; I have no opinion to offer. If I have pain here, you say, “You must go to a doctor.” What...

...could I possibly tell you about it? But as soon as the subject turns to religion, a person says, “I learned all that at school; I know it already.” In every other matter he behaves sensibly and does not presume to express an opinion that would make him look ridiculous. Yet concerning religion—though he has never even opened Holy Scripture to see what it says, nor read the writings of others—he refuses to accept anything and still insists on having an opinion. How absurd man can be! Ezekiel, however, shows us something very beautiful. What do I know about these things? “You know, O Lord,” he says. Very well, then, since I know, pay attention to what I shall tell you. “And He said to me, ‘Prophesy over these bones and say to them...’” Speak to them, He says. But am I to speak to dry bones? Speak to them. “Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.” I am speaking on behalf of the Lord, he says; these are not my own words.

“Thus says the Lord to these bones: Behold, I shall bring into you the spirit of life.” I shall bring you back to life, He says. “And I shall put sinews upon you”—you know what sinews are, those things that hold the body together—“and I shall bring flesh upon you, and stretch skin over you.” You understand: this is creation taking place anew. “And I shall put My Spirit within you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord.” These are the words you must speak to those dry bones. Here it is made clear that He will create anew from what has been broken down, especially from the bones that, as you know, remain in all the cemeteries...

...apart from those that have been devoured and scattered by wild beasts, eaten by fish in the seas, or lost through drowning. Yet even the particles of those bones still exist. Science itself has acknowledged this since the discovery of the atom revealed that matter changes form. When the atom was split, scientists immediately concluded that matter is not lost but changes its form, and that its particles continue to exist—whether in the same place, in the earth, or elsewhere. These, God tells him, are the words you must speak.

“So I prophesied as the Lord commanded me.” What did I do? I preached to bones, to dry remains. “And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, an earthquake; and each bone came together into its proper joint.” The whole plain was shaken, and the bones were assembled, and...

...at once they all came together. The bones of the feet went to the feet, those of the hands to the hands, those of the back and the chest to their places—and each person’s bones returned to that same person. My bones did not go into my wife’s skeleton, nor yours into your father’s skeleton. No. “Each bone came together into its proper joint,” it says. “And I looked, and behold, sinews and flesh grew upon them, and skin spread over them; but there was no spirit in them.” Once the skeletons had been formed, sinews appeared within them; then they were filled with flesh, and skin covered them. But they had no spirit. We could say that each one now had a human body, but it was still without...

life within him, as though his spirit or soul had been taken away—as with a dead body, what remains of a person when the spirit is separated from him. Pay attention this coming Sunday, if you attend church or have the opportunity. You will hear about an event that took place in the days of Christ: the healing of a man blind from birth. He had no eyes within his sockets—no eyeballs, only empty sockets. He was not someone who had lost his sight during his lifetime; he had been born blind, and Christ performed an act of creation upon him.

People, as I have told you, also dispute that God is the Creator. They gladly accept that they come from some foolish ape, but they do not want to accept that they come from God. There was once a young woman, a university student, whom a taxi driver described in a certain way. She believed the theory that man evolved from the ape, and she was speaking with another, simple man, trying to convince him that God is not the Creator and that we came from the ape. At last he said, “I am very sorry that I have spent an hour talking with a monkey.” She replied, “How can you speak to me like that?” “How am I speaking? What have I said? Why are you offended? Is that not what you told me? Is that not what you believe?” Then she came to her senses and began to think about it.

“Since you tell me that the ape is your father, what are you? What else am I to call you?” And yet man prefers to sink so low rather than accept God as Creator. Christ made an eye—an eyeball—with a little saliva and a little earth. When God created the world, there were no human witnesses; there were no people. Only the angels sang hymns on the day of creation. So He permitted a blind man to come, “that the works of God might be revealed,” so that He might disclose His identity and provide a demonstration, as though saying, “Gentlemen, you were not there at the creation. But I will make it easier for you: I will show you that I am the Creator.” And with saliva and earth He made eyes. Since all of you have some measure of scientific knowledge, you know what an eye means within the human body. It is the most delicate part of the creation of the human body...

The eye is also the most mysterious. Not even professors of ophthalmology know how it works. They do not know how a human being sees. They can describe it, but they cannot reproduce it. They will explain this and that, but they cannot explain how it happens. They know what occurs, but we do not know how it occurs. And Christ made an eye when He came into the world, helping man to accept and believe, if he is willing—to possess knowledge of the matter and not faith alone. In any case, here Ezekiel describes precisely how this re-creation took place. Yet at this point they were only bodies. They were exactly as Adam was when he first came forth from God’s hands. God then breathed into him, made him a living being by the breath of life, and he arose. Until then he remained lifeless, like a dead man lying in a coffin, without a spirit. In any case...

He said to me—and He continues, saying: “Prophesy also to the spirit, O son of man. Prophesy and say to the spirit: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds”—that is, from the four points of the horizon—“come and breathe into these dead, that they may live,” so that the spirit might enter them and these people might arise. “And I prophesied as He commanded me, and the spirit entered into them; and they stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great assembly.” The whole plain was filled with people. “And the Lord spoke to me, saying: Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel”—that is, the whole world.

They say, “Our bones have become dry. Our hope is lost; we are utterly cut off.” They are dry bones—how can you now expect life? Is there anything left to hope for? The whole matter is over and lost. “Therefore prophesy and say to them: Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will open your graves and bring you up from your graves, and I will lead you into the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord when I open your tombs and bring My people up from their graves. And I will put My Spirit within you, and you shall live; and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken and will do it, says the Lord God.” And yet feeble man comes along and disputes the words of God...

words that neither heretics nor persecutors—nor anyone else—have been able to erase. Holy Scripture will always hold the place of honor...

throughout the whole world and in every age, despite the determination of men and Satan to erase it and remove it from their midst. Various heretics sometimes alter it, yet the texts themselves remain the same. Even to this day, the archaeologist’s spade brings things to light that leave unbelievers rubbing their eyes in astonishment. Some accept what these discoveries tell them, while others do not.

Through Ezekiel’s vision, then, God has shown precisely what the Resurrection is and how the Resurrection and re-creation of mankind will take place. And yet man disputes it. He does not accept it. He does not want to acknowledge it. That is his right. In any case, I have presented you with one testimony; now let me present another. The next testimony comes from Paul the Apostle.

In his First Epistle to the Thessalonians—for he wrote two epistles to them—Paul the Apostle writes the following in chapter four, verse thirteen. This is also the passage that the Orthodox Church uses during the funeral service. At a funeral, both the Gospel passage concerning the Resurrection and the epistle reading concerning the Resurrection are read. They tell those who remain behind, first, that the person who has departed is not lost and, second, that one day, whether you wish it or not, he will rise. Listen, then, to how Paul puts it: “But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep.”

He says, “I do not want you to lack knowledge concerning those who have fallen asleep”—what becomes of these people and what will happen to them. “That you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.” Some have no hope of the Resurrection. A person says, “It is over; I have lost my loved one,” as though a human being were an object, as though he were a lost key. “I have lost my loved one,” he says. Paul tells us, “I do not want you to grieve like those who have no hope of the Resurrection.” “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again”—as I told you, he writes to the Corinthians that if Christ did not rise, then woe to us: we are still in our sins, there is no Resurrection, we are false witnesses of God for saying that He raised Christ, and neither shall we rise. So we believe that Jesus died and rose again; “even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep through Jesus...”

“He will bring them with Him.” In the same way, he says, God will one day raise all those who die through Jesus. “For this we say to you by the word of the Lord.” I am not telling you this on my own authority, he says. This is not some clever idea of mine. These are the words of God. “We”—and the Greek word is written in a way that includes the speaker himself; I will explain why I point this out—“we who are alive and remain until the Second Coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who have fallen asleep.” He is speaking about the Second Coming (Parousia) of the Lord. This is the Lord’s Second Coming. His first coming has already taken place, and we know its results. By saying “we,” Paul includes himself. In other words, he does not know when the Second Coming will occur. He is saying that it may happen tonight, tomorrow, or in our own days. Some people say...

that God’s coming is delayed. This teaches us that each person must believe he will one day meet Christ in one of two ways. Whether he believes it or not, he may rage and do whatever he pleases. The first way is the one Paul describes: the Second Coming will take place, and Christ will appear again. The other way is that we ourselves will go and knock at His door through death. When a person departs this life, he has already been judged. Whatever state the lens of death captures him in will remain his state in eternity. Therefore, Paul is saying here that the Second Coming may occur at any moment. As he says elsewhere, “As it was in the days of Noah...”

people were marrying, trading, feasting, and carrying on with their lives. Then the floodgates opened, the deluge began, and they were drowned. Only those who had entered Noah’s Ark were saved. In exactly the same way, he says, the Second Coming of God will take place before man realizes it. It will happen in the twinkling of an eye—the eye automatically closes in an instant, often to protect itself. It will happen with such lightning speed that a person will not even have time to take a pencil in his hand. “For this we say to you by the word of the Lord: we who are alive and remain until the Second Coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who have fallen asleep.” This is a serious matter. Why is that, Paul? “For the Lord Himself, with a command”—He will issue the command—“with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God, will descend from heaven.” God will descend again. Indeed, in the Apocalypse, John saw Him.

“Behold, He is coming with the clouds of heaven, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him”—those who nailed Him and pierced His side. They too, he says, will see Him on that day when He comes. “And the dead in Christ will rise first.” In chapter fifteen of First Corinthians, Paul the Apostle explains precisely how this will happen. He presents the Resurrection of the dead in two stages. When God comes—when Jesus Christ Himself comes—the graves will open, whether we wish it or not. The graves will open. And when they open, those who believed in Christ will rise first and be caught up to meet Him. When someone approaches, do we not go out to welcome him at the edge of our city or village? We go out to meet him. It will be like that. Then the others will rise afterward and come to be judged.

In any case, he says here that they will rise. Then, “we who are alive and remain.” When Christ comes at the Second Coming, he says, first the graves of the faithful, of the Christians, will open. Then comes the turn of those of us who are still alive, because when He comes at the Second Coming, there will be people on earth who will not have fallen asleep—that is, died—and risen. They will be transformed, as he says here. “Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.” We shall go out to meet Him. “And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.” So comfort those who imagine that their loved ones die and are lost, so that they will not grieve. And I repeat: the Church has taken this passage and uses it to comfort...

those who send their loved ones ahead, as though by a faster train, into eternity. Now Paul said, “We who are alive.” He included himself two thousand years ago. But two thousand years have now passed, and nothing has happened—no Second Coming, nothing. Then Peter comes and gives an answer, as though in agreement with Paul, addressing this very question. Listen. I am reading from Peter’s Second Epistle, chapter three, from verse one onward. He says: “Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle.” He had written a first and now writes a second. This, he says, is my second epistle. “In both of them...”

“I stir up your sincere understanding by way of reminder.” I want to help you direct your nous, your spiritual intellect, toward certain things. “That you may remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets, and the commandment of the Lord and Savior given through us, the apostles.” I want, he says, to remind you of certain things that the Prophets and the Apostles said on Christ’s behalf. “Knowing this first”—first of all, he says, you must keep this in mind—“that scoffers will come in the last days.” In the final days, in the last times, people will come who mock divine things. It is as though Peter were looking at our own time. “Walking according to their own desires”—living as they please...

following their flesh, their egotism, and their self-interest. “And saying, ‘Where is the promise of His Second Coming?’” He has been telling us for two thousand years that He will come, and He has not come. Come now—there is nothing to it! “For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” They were buried and died, they say, and no one has risen to this day. “For they deliberately forget this: that long ago the heavens existed, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God.” Peter wants to take us back to creation: before anything was made, there was neither water nor heaven nor anything else, yet out of nothing came both water...

and earth. And where does the earth stand today? What does science say? Where does the earth stand? It hangs over the water. The earth is suspended over the water. How it remains there is a mystery. What do we chant during Holy Week? “He who hung the earth is today hung upon the Tree”; “He who hung the earth upon the waters.” Who pays attention to these things? What does science say on this subject? That the earth truly rests over the water. How this is so, no one can say. Peter says that people must pay attention to these things. “By which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water.” At that time, the world was engulfed by water and perished. Until recently, people did not believe that the deluge was universal, and so forth. Yet the archaeologist’s spade has demonstrated this too: the deluge, Mount Ararat, and even remains of Noah’s Ark. Science has discovered these things today and thus comes to vindicate Holy Scripture.

“But the heavens and the earth which now exist are stored up by His word and reserved for fire until the day of judgment and the destruction of ungodly men.” This earth and this heaven, he says, by that same word of God, will one day be burned and pass away, when the judgment of ungodly men takes place. “But do not let this one thing escape you, beloved: with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” We speak of two thousand years. But what are two thousand years in the face of eternity? What are two thousand years before eternity? What are the 969 years that Methuselah lived? What are the 930 years that Adam lived? What

are all these years? Yet some people sneer in their narrow-mindedness: “Years were different then.” They still had twenty-four hours. The sun rose and the sun set, and you tell me that years were different then? Why would they be? But we always measure everything by our own mathematics, and from that limited standpoint, as finite human beings, we speak about such things. “The Lord is not slow concerning His promise, as some count slowness.” He is not delaying, Peter says. There is a particular reason why He postpones it. “But He is long-suffering toward us.” The Greek word for long-suffering is a compound word; it means that His anger remains far off. So what does He do? God postpones the day, “not willing that any should perish”—so that none of those who are slow to respond may be lost. He bears with them and waits even for those who linger, “but that all should come to metanoia, to repentance.” He grants more time; He postpones the day so that more may enter. “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night.” Just as a thief lies in wait and steals while the master of the house is asleep, so

“the heavens will pass away with a great noise, the elements will be dissolved with burning heat, and the earth and the works in it will be burned up.” Man does not believe this. But John saw this new earth and new heaven, because the first earth will pass away, as the Scriptures tell us—and this was written not only after Christ but also before Christ. Through Isaiah it was proclaimed that the old heavens and the old earth would pass away. John writes in chapter 21 of the Apocalypse that he saw these things: “And I saw a new heaven”—the word “new” is written with alpha-iota—“and a new earth”—again with alpha-iota—“for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.” He saw these very things.

These are matters of the utmost seriousness. That is precisely why God took care to provide evidence, so that those who want evidence may have something firm on which to stand. But, of course, for those who do not want to believe, as you understand, all this is regarded as a fairy tale. Peter then gives his conclusion: “Since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness?” If we expect everything to be dissolved, and to find ourselves with nothing beneath us, confronted by a reality we did not expect, then how ought we to live? What way of life is truly for our benefit? “Looking for and hastening the Second Coming, the day of God.” We must both await that day and prepare ourselves for it, because all of us will come face to face with it. “Because of it the heavens, being on fire, will be dissolved, and the elements will melt with burning heat. But new heavens”—with alpha-iota—

“and a new earth, according to His promise”—according to the promise and the prophecy of Isaiah—“we look for, in which righteousness dwells.” So there is light for those who desire it, if they wish to learn how God has ordered these matters—if, of course, they believe that God exists, because many would listen to Him if they believed He did. But for many, He does not exist. There are also some who acknowledge Him but do not listen to Him. They hear, but they do not obey. That is why He Himself said, “He who has ears”—not merely for decoration—“to hear,” ears meant for hearing, “let him hear.” Let him hear what is for his own benefit. For whether we want it or not, the curtain will one day fall. So I think that, while there is still time, we too ought to reflect deeply on these things. That is what I had to say today, as a continuation of our rambling discussion here.

They did not want to acknowledge the Resurrection. Yet Holy Scripture tells us that the Resurrection will take place.

Το θέλουμε είτε όχι, θα πραγματοποιηθεί αυτό που θέλει ο Θεός. Θα αναστηθούμε μίαν ημέρα και υπάρχει ζωή πέραν του τάφου. Βέβαια, θα είναι αργά όταν θα το καταλάβουν ορισμένοι, όταν θα έρθουν στην πραγματικότητα. Αλλά θέλουν να το δούνε οπωσδήποτε. Πώς να το δούνε προκαταβολικώς, εάν δεν το πιστέψουν;
