Summary

Christians should answer God’s call with punctual, reverent church attendance rather than treating worship as less important than worldly engagements. The body must serve the soul through discipline, prayer, fasting, the Gospel, and the Holy Mysteries, just as material nourishment must be balanced by spiritual nourishment. Financial offerings sustain worship, clergy, church buildings, and care for people in need, continuing a practice witnessed since apostolic times.

This evening, by the grace of God, allow me to say something that concerns everyone, and Christians in particular. It is the matter of what we call the Church and attending its services.

Almost all of us fall short when it comes to the Church and attending its services. Yet this is the one thing we should not arrange to suit ourselves; it should order our lives. In everything else, we are punctual.

This is especially true in our worldly affairs. We know that we must appear at an appointed time.

Whether it is a reception, a wedding, a Baptism, a dance, or a dinner, the only One for whom we are not punctual is God when He calls us. He sends three invitations—the bells ring three times—and He even warns us the evening before: “Tomorrow I am calling you.” Yet a person decides for himself when he will go, instead of asking when he ought to be there in response to that call. How must God feel when He sees a person being so inconsistent toward Him, so unfaithful in keeping his appointment with Him? There is no fear of God, no reverence for God.

The fear of God means reverence for God. But God is not taken seriously; God is not taken into account. Deluded people believe in a crippled God with only one leg, called love. They refuse to believe that He also has another leg, called justice. One who is good cannot fail also to be just and to require justice, especially since it was declared beforehand: “God has loved righteousness.” Sadly, man refuses to conform, and one day he will stand face-to-face with the Presiding Judge. Then there will be no room for lies. Everything will be brought to light, and according to the way each person lived in this world,

so will he find himself in the next. We say this, after all, in the Doxology: “Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, just as we have hoped in You.” Be assured: that is exactly what I shall do. As you have fashioned and prepared yourself, so shall I deal with you. Now, it is true that many people do not act from indifference or malice when they do the very opposite of what is beneficial. They begin from ignorance and act because of that ignorance. They do not understand what is at stake, whether they should behave this way or not, or how they ought to behave. Even so, they are not excused; ignorance of the law is no defense.

Here in earthly, worldly, human affairs, a judge does not accept ignorance of the law—how much less in divine matters. God requires us to learn. Consider how many things people learn today, and how many useless things they learn, while refusing to learn what is necessary. Man is so foolish: throughout his life he has concerned himself with countless things, yet has not cared to learn about those things which endure, which are eternal, which possess eternal validity and pass with us beyond the grave. I do not know whether you remember, have read, or have heard about this meeting with Christ in the home of Lazarus’s sisters. Do you remember it? Martha rushed in and said to Him: “Do You not care that she has left me to serve alone—this lazy woman sitting there at Your feet?”

“Tell her to help me.” And He answered her, as we have just heard: “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” He would not pass through her home again. He came only once, and Mary made use of the time, even at the risk of being misunderstood as inhospitable or a poor housekeeper, so that she might grasp what He was teaching. This is how a person must understand and think about life. We pass through here only once. We have no opportunity to pass this way again. And if we fail to attend to what truly deserves our attention, we suffer loss. Everything else will be left behind here.

Households, gossip, social manners, homes, cars, vast estates, wealth, glory, swords, guns, victories, and crowns—all will remain here. The good portion is whatever concerns the soul, because that is what a person will take with him from here. And even if he possessed all the money in the world here, it would have been better for him not to have been born. He does not need it. What does he need it for? To eat a few portions of okra and eggplant, or a few sweets and some fillets of meat? It is absurd for anyone to believe that he came into this world and lives in it merely to eat what irrational animals also eat. Man alone has this higher calling. Yet he labors at the expense of his soul—the portion he ought to honor.

He does so even on Sundays and feast days. A week has 168 hours, which Christ gives each person to manage: to eat, sleep, enjoy recreation, read, laugh, cry, and do whatever he wishes. He places 168 hours in our hands. Yet there is not one hour for Him; not even one hour out of 168 can be spared. What a fine person that is! He is ungrateful—not toward God so much as toward himself. The first person he harms is himself, along with everything that comes his way.

You do not spit at the sun or make an insulting gesture toward it.

The spit will come back into your face, and if you throw stones at the sun, the stones will fall on your own head. Whether you disregard the summer sun or not, you are the one who will suffer sunstroke. If only people could understand this! The churches we have built would not be enough to hold everyone. Nor would our churches be in their present sorry state, while each person builds one, two, three, or five apartments, yet thousands of us together cannot build a single worthy room in which to gather every Sunday—and we are ashamed even to set foot inside. Only on that day will we understand the harm we have done, but then it will be too late. My beloved, if we believe that we have a soul and are not merely cats, attending the Church’s services is essential. Blessed is the person who feels this need.

You feel the need to breathe, and when you lose oxygen you feel yourself suffocating and dying. It should be exactly the same with the soul. Yet someone asks, “Has the third bell rung?” Are the first and second bells not for you? For whom are they—for the angels or the priests? Is not everything said from the moment the priest proclaims, “Blessed is the Kingdom,” meant for you and me? And yet some people arrive at “Through the prayers”; others arrive after the Gospel, and some are still coming in at “Through the prayers,” thinking that they have fulfilled their duty and everything is in order. Heaven forbid that anyone should criticize them, and heaven forbid that they should actually enter on time! If these are Christians, then who are the Christians? Basil the Great says, “A good thing is not good unless it is done well.” A good thing, he says,

is it good in itself? Not at all. Unless it is done well, it is not good. Church attendance is good, but it must be done properly; only then is it truly good. Otherwise, although the thing itself is good, it is not good for us. And this applies to almost everyone who goes. I am not speaking about those who are indifferent—people who do not even know where they were taken when they were baptized, where they were taken when they were crowned in Holy Matrimony, or where they will be taken when they are buried. What can I say about them? I am speaking about those who attend church and believe themselves to be good Christians. I am speaking about us, though we are not good Christians at all, because we neither do nor reflect upon what the Church offers for our edification. My beloved, we are human beings,

body and spirit. And you know how much work is devoted to the body every day: how much attention, how many baths, foods, weigh-ins, medicines, and other things—all for this carcass, which is nothing. It is a little water, a little lime, a little iron, and a little phosphorus. That is all. Go to the First Cemetery and see what we are and what we shall become. Yet so much care, labor, anxiety, and suffering are spent on this Cain—this Cain—because the body becomes the murderer of its brother Abel, the soul. It desires things that sap its life and disturb it, so great care is needed.

This partnership between soul and body is like a dog living with a cat. There is constant hostility between them: what the body desires is not beneficial to the soul, and what the soul desires the body does not want. Great care is therefore needed. A person must never permit the rider to be governed by the vehicle. The body is the vehicle, and the soul is the rider. Imagine driving a car and some foolish child crying out, “Do I go wherever my car wants, or wherever I choose?” Many people do not govern at all; we are governed by the flesh. “I will go later,” a man says; then he yawns, turns over, and sleeps another half hour. Why indulge it? You are indulging the body. The body does not want the Church at all, because the Church requires you to exert yourself. It requires prayer, self-restraint, the Gospels, and the Holy Mysteries—all poison to the body.

The body regards all these things as unnecessary and wants its own things, which are completely opposed to them. Therefore, unless a person takes this seriously and begins to tighten the reins of the body, he will be lost together with it. Brakes are needed, as well as a sound understanding of the matter. The body must be placed at the service of the soul, not the soul at the service of the body. Sadly, we indulge the body, and the results will be dreadful. The table is laid three or four times a day. We have breakfast and lunch; many also have an afternoon snack; then we have dinner, and many later have ice cream, sweets, coffee, and other things at eleven or twelve at night. See how much attention is given to this Cain.

Go out and see what the greengrocer’s shop contains: everything, wondrously so. All these things are for man, but they must be used with discernment—with discernment. Yet there is also food for the soul. The soul too has a table; it too has bread; it too has a fire that bakes the proper bread. There is a material table and a spiritual table. There is material fire and spiritual fire. There is bread from the bakery,

and there is the Bread upon the Holy Altar. How do you approach all these things? How is it that you make full use of your home for the sake of your body, yet fail to make use of the Church, this spiritual table, for the sake of your soul? Where is your reason? What does it mean to be accomplished or educated if you have not distinguished between soul and body, or between the needs of the one and the needs of the other? What have you achieved? What have you achieved? The time has therefore come for man to make good use of what has been so clearly made known to him. Fortunately, despite man’s lack of concern, the bells continue to ring. A time will come when the bells will no longer ring, and then we shall understand what we received from the Church, whether for the departed or for the living.

The Church also has an effect upon those beyond the grave. And those beyond the grave, throughout the ages and millennia, await help from the Orthodox Church and from the Orthodox altar. This is no private affair. A poor soul appears to someone in a dream. What did that poor soul do? Where is your mother? They reached the mother, in the place of purification. Where do they remain? Tell me, where do they fast?

Take it to the poor man; he knows what has been arranged. Her son knows what has been arranged. It is a burden on my back. The One who has authority over both the dead and the living reigns even over death. But this man has no relationship with Him and does nothing in His way. You cannot send anything by post; nothing reaches beyond death that way. You hold the fortieth-day memorial, yet your mother remains without consolation. And when you yourself pass over there, then you will understand what harm you did by neglecting her soul.

The lasting things, the eternal things, are those that remain beyond the grave. Everything else stays here—fashions, systems, inventions; one overturns another and one scatters another. Things change every day. What does not change is what lies beyond the grave. During the 167 or 168 hours of the week, a person falls among robbers. You know that there are robbers in the world. And I do not mean the robbers we used to talk about, Koubey and Tzey. There are other robbers, called demons, who bite and wound—not bodies, but souls. And those who have fallen among robbers, Christ—if you remember the parable of the Good Samaritan... Thank you.

He took the man to the inn, left him there, and charged the innkeeper with his treatment and complete recovery. The next day he left two coins there and said to him, “I am going away and will return, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you.” He did not send him to a coffeehouse or to the sea. He bore him upon the very beast that He Himself had put on—human flesh—and took him to the inn, which is the Church, and to the innkeeper, who is the priest. To him He entrusted the complete healing of the man who had fallen among robbers. This is what the Lord had in mind. Indeed, I want you to know that this inn, which Christ had in mind when He said that...

...a man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among robbers, still exists on that road today. Before we turn toward the wilderness of the Jordan, where the monastery of Saint George the Chozebite stands, the inn that Christ had in mind when He told this parable is there on the right-hand side of the road. This is a fundamental matter, my dear friends, but we do not take it seriously enough. We think that when the bell rings, it is for the priest, the chanter, the sacristan, some elderly woman, or some deacon. We behave like those who said, “I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them.” Another said, “I have taken a wife; I am newly married, so I am not going to Church. Tell him to excuse me.”

And so on. We then occupy ourselves with our five senses—and the five yoke of oxen signify the five senses: two eyes, two hands, smell, touch, hearing, and so forth. What shall we eat? What shall we touch? What shall we hear? What shall we steal? That is all. Nothing beyond these things interests us. Let the bells ring as much as they like. Yet the bells are witnesses. When the bell rings, a person should call to mind what happened when Noah struck a piece of wood: the creatures gathered from the earth, entered the Ark two by two, and were saved from the flood. The flood! This custom still exists in the monasteries, in what they call the talanton. The striking of the wood reminds us: “Enter the Ark, so that you may escape the flood.”

Therefore, outside the Ark, outside the Church, there is no salvation. You will fall among robbers and suffer the opposite outcome. If you have been to the Holy Mountain, where the traditions are properly preserved and everything speaks and reminds us of the value of both body and soul, you will have noticed that when you leave the church—with the Holy Altar at its far end—directly opposite stands the material table, the refectory. In other words, if you look from the far end of the Holy Altar straight across, you see the dining table. There sit the abbot, the priests, all the other fathers, and even the guests. And each person’s...

...nous, the spiritual intellect, asks: “What relationship does the body have with the spirit? Is one superior?” No; both are necessary. The material table is necessary, and so is the spiritual table. The body stands to the soul as the shell stands to the egg. The body is the eggshell. Yet there can be no egg, no yolk and white, without the shell. When you care for the body, know that you are caring for a shell. One day the sting of death will pierce it; it will open, the little bird will fly upward, and the shell will remain below and be cast aside somewhere.

You pamper it, worry over it, and suffer for it. Do you understand how foolish it is to devote all your thought and concern, and the whole weight of your effort, to caring for a shell? The body is necessary; it is a temple of the Holy Spirit, and a human being cannot be conceived without a body. But the body is not the human person—that is the point. The soul can live without the body, but the body cannot live without the soul. When the soul departs, the body dies at once, is wrapped for burial, and immediately returns to that from which it was formed: “You are dust, and to dust you shall return.” You are earth, you will become earth, and to the earth you will go. Proper care must therefore be given to it; I do not mean to suggest that it is unimportant.

“My dear wife, we have a soul too; get up, and let us go to Church.” “My dear husband, wait—we have a soul too; get up, and let us go to Church.” The bell has rung. “Come on, children, swing those legs out of bed and put your feet on the floor.” Get the child up; he is going to Church. You do well to shop, and to buy good food, so that they may eat at the midday table. But let the soul also be nourished.

Let them eat in the evening as well, and between meals. You have done well in all this. But do not treat spiritual things as mere objects, as a nuisance, or as nothing at all. They are not imaginary things; they are real. Attend to them too. Weigh everything properly and give both body and soul the honor that each is due. Yet this does not happen, and that is what I am speaking about. We do not take seriously what this soul is or how people will present it when they are brought there, whether they will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. Seriously—how?

Will you inherit the Kingdom of Heaven if you do not become a child of the King? And who will make you a child of the King? How can you treat with hostility the King who would make you His child, declaring, “I will not go”? How can you possibly become a child of the King? What Kingdom of Heaven will you inherit? Do you imagine that you will not die, or do you simply not care about the Kingdom of Heaven? You offer many defenses, but when you say these things, I answer you: “Suppose there is nothing beyond the grave.” Do you agree? Very well. But if there is, what will you do then? If there is, what will you do then? Even if the chance were one in a billion, what would you do? And consider this as well: you do not believe, while I believe and live a disciplined life, doing what the Church and Christ teach in the Gospels. Tell me: if these things truly exist, what becomes of you?

Let us suppose that they do not exist. What have I lost by living this way, and what have you gained by living the other way? Tell me, where is the benefit? Where is the reason in it? Why do we not wake up? Why do we refuse to do what is right? What have you gained by not believing, and what have I lost by believing? If we are going to speak seriously, we are being quite ridiculous. A person who lives prudently and with moderation—a life of self-restraint, fasting when required, accepting a little hardship when necessary, and remaining disciplined—is a peaceful person, a blessed person. Go to the psychiatric hospitals; you will not find a true Christian there. Go to the neurological clinics; you will not find a true Christian there.

I do not mean someone who is Christian merely on an identity card, but someone who is organically a Christian, a member of the Church. Such illnesses are foreign to Christianity. Go to hospitals like Syngros; you will not find a truly Christian girl there, nor a truly Christian young man. Those who are not Christians, who have no relationship with Christ, who have cut themselves off from the Gospel and its moral life—these become the inmates, these are the unhappy ones. For years they waste away from morning until night. Visit and examine the matter seriously and objectively, and you will see how beneficial it is for a person to live as a Christian—but organically as a Christian, not merely in theory.

Not theoretically, but organically, because a member must belong to the body. A hand must grasp, work, and remain warm; it must be joined to the trunk. A believer cannot be a member of the Church and a member of Christ without an organic relationship with Christ, having only a theoretical one. The devil himself believes correctly and knows the truth. Does any human being believe as firmly as the devil does? James says, “Even the demons believe—and tremble” before God, but they do not act. They believe, but they do not act. And that is where most of us are. We see the Church as a priest’s shop, as some priest’s private business. Perhaps even the priest may see it that way, but the Church is not that, and a Christian does not see it that way. It is divine.

I must have a close relationship with the Church, be a member of her, and receive what she offers for my immortal soul, so that I may no longer fear death. I would like us to understand that whoever does not have the Church as his mother does not have God as his Father. A person who does not feel that the Church is his mother cannot say the “Our Father.” He must have the Church as his mother, Christ as his brother, and God as his Father. Since he has no relationship—no organic relationship—with Christ, he cannot call the Church his mother...

...or call God his Father. God is not “our Father” for such a person. He must have Christ as his brother, the Church as his mother, and God as his Father. That is how we shall move forward. We must therefore realize that we need to become Christians. Some people complain and say that the Church, as she exists today, has become an obstacle for the Christian: “Wherever you go inside, you have to pay.” Who ever put a hand into your pocket and told you, “Pay here”? Has anyone ever told you that you must do that? Do you have no money? Go in, make the sign of the Cross, stand quietly in a corner, and say your prayer.

Has anyone stopped you? If you have something, offer it. If you do not, give nothing. Besides, this has been the Church’s practice since apostolic times. Has the Church not always asked the faithful to contribute? Are the few drachmas you give to light a candle really a justifiable reason for refusing to go to Church? Is that money not needed? Roof tiles will break. Must we not repair them, so that rain does not fall inside and we can enter? Does the church building not need electricity? Does it not need someone to clean it? The candle itself has no need of anything. But what of those who work there—the chanters and the sacristan—so that you and I may find it clean on Sunday, so that they may chant for me, bury me, celebrate my Holy Matrimony, crown me, and baptize me? Do they not need money? Thank you.

Is that not necessary? Has anyone ever become poor by giving two drachmas to the Church? No one has; I have never heard of anyone. People have become poor through gambling, through women, through men, through alcohol, and through deceit. Those things have impoverished people, but the Church never has. Does not Paul say in the First Epistle to the Corinthians, chapter sixteen, that collections should be taken and offered to people in need—to the widow, the orphan, the sick person, the traveler, or the prisoner? Do we not encounter such cases? Put this into the simplest practical terms. If tomorrow you are the one in need of a little money, would you not want others to contribute? How can you think this way? How can you listen when people say that the Church is a business?

Nevertheless, many people will not enter the Church or attend services because, they claim, “They skin you alive in there.” If you read the Apology of Saint Justin Martyr from the first century—and perhaps many of the gentlemen here have read it—you will find his explanation that a Christian going to Church should make an offering. From those earliest days there were offering boxes in the Church, and from those earliest days there were collection plates. This is not the time to quote the texts to you, because many would not be able to remember them. But I am giving you their conclusions, so that you may know them. Besides, as I said, no priest has ever put his hand into anyone’s pocket. Yet we should...

...make offerings, and those who labor there should receive their livelihood from them. What does Paul say? “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.” Does he say this merely because God is concerned about oxen? The Spirit writes with a deeper meaning. If you labor here, you will receive what is given to you. Are you not threshing here? Do you not remain here from morning until evening? Do you not wait here to serve each person who comes? Are you not threshing here? Then you will eat from this labor. No one, he says, tends sheep without partaking of the milk or cheese from the flock he tends. What does that mean? No one plants a vineyard without eating grapes from that vineyard. Are the clergy supposed to live on air? Does manna fall from heaven for them? Manna does not fall now. So, if you marry once in your life...

You come here once in your life to be married, and it costs you a hundred drachmas. Is that a problem? Is that really an issue? Besides, what do you expect the priest to be like? Do you want him to be a beggar, filthy, unable to educate his children, without even a room to live in or a means of transportation? What do you expect this priest, whose services you use, to live on, while you complain that the Church burdens you? There may indeed be abuses. Someone may be greedy; someone may be a Judas. But that is not the end of the world. The Church is not endangered by Judases, just as she was not endangered then. Christ called twelve men: one betrayed Him, another denied Him, another complained against Him, yet the Church was not shaken. And Christ Himself had chosen them.

You who are upright, offer your own child to serve, so that the Church may not be endangered. Yet you say, “Neither this one is suitable nor that one.” But neither you nor anyone else will escape death. One day everything will close for you. You will not escape. Whether you like it or not, eight hands and eight feet will come together and...

they will carry you—and they will carry me—to the place we do not wish to go. How will you avoid it? They will carry you into the Church to have the funeral prayers read over you, and then you will understand what it was that you had neglected. We need to have a right understanding of the Church. We need to understand what the Church is for, how greatly we need her, and begin making use of her today. We wait until we die, so that memorial services may be held for us and prosphora offered on our behalf. But we must pass through the Church while we are still alive. We must die here to the ways of the world. We must die to the flesh, to the ego, and to self-interest, so that when we die, we shall not truly die. We have just come from Souli. I gave a talk there, and I was discussing with the young people who brought me something they had read in the guesthouse of a monastery on the Holy Mountain. It said this:

“Whoever dies before he dies will not die when he dies. But whoever does not die before he dies will die when he dies.” It is a play on words, but it has a profound meaning. Whoever does not die to the world, but lives here saying, “I will live my life; I will do this and that,” will truly die when bodily death comes; he will go downward. But whoever begins dying here—disciplining the flesh, resisting the world and its fashions, embracing fasting and all the rest—will not die when death comes. He will pass from death into life. My dear friends, death and life beyond the grave are a continuation of this present life—a continuation. It is not as people say in their shallow way:

“Hell is here, and Paradise is here.” Hell is not here, nor is Paradise here. Hell begins here, and Paradise begins here, yes; but Hell and Paradise themselves are not here. There is a kind of camera lens called death. Whatever state it captures you in, at the very moment it captures you, that is how you will remain in eternity. Did it find you in metanoia, in Holy Confession, receiving Holy Communion, with your ticket in hand? The continuation is Paradise. Did it find you unrepentant, unreconciled, without confession, indifferent, and unforgiven? The continuation is Hell. The grave is the most faithful guardian. No safe is as secure as the grave. Whatever you give it to keep,

it preserves. What did you give it? If you gave it a raven, it will return a raven to you at the Resurrection. If you gave it a dove, it will return a dove to you at the Resurrection. One day the graves will open miraculously, and whatever we entrusted to them for safekeeping on the day of our death, they will give back. We will have no one to blame. So we have never reflected deeply; we have never seriously considered what death is—that whether we want it or not, we shall die and come to judgment. And because we fail to reckon with this, we disregard the Church, where we can make our soul secure so that we need not fear death. Looking at my watch, I see that I have been speaking for about forty-three minutes.

Multiply that by seventy, and you get roughly three thousand heartbeats—whatever the exact number may be. Or let me place my hand here over my heart. By now there must have been about three thousand beats: tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock. The heart has beaten approximately that many times. Ask it, as I ask mine: “What are you doing there? What is that tick-tock I hear?” It will tell you, “I am walking. These are footsteps.” “And where are you going?” “I am taking you to your coffin. I am taking you to the cemetery.” “Really?” “Yes.” “Stop! Do not go.”

If it stops, you will arrive even sooner—an hour sooner. So let it keep walking. Look: no one is going backward. We are all moving toward the cemetery. My own journey may end in half an hour. I came up here to speak, but who told me that I would come down from this platform alive? Who told me? You came here after leaving instructions: “Cook at such-and-such a time,” and so forth. But perhaps you will not return. Who told you that you would? Did you say, “God willing”? You did not. Man is thoughtless; even the accomplished man is thoughtless. The way he conducts his life is truly absurd. That is why Satan catches us unawares and everything is lost. This life, and this longsuffering of God, can become a danger unto death. Thank you.

We go on sinning, adding sins upon sins, and we do not settle our account freely through the metanoia and Holy Confession that God has left for us in this world. Therefore, my dear friends, return to the Church. The Church has been given by God and established by God, but man must make use of her. As I said earlier, if people had a living relationship with the Church, we would not have psychiatric hospitals or neurological clinics; we would not have any of these things. The Church resolves every problem. When the human soul suffers and is tormented, when it is burdened today by anxiety and all the rest, the Church sets these things in order. Yet people remain far from the Church.

They live with dreams and fears; they lose sleep over one thing and another. They become instruments of Satan, as happens especially with those who claim to remove the evil eye. “Call Mrs. Katina; someone has cast the evil eye on the child.” Who is Mrs. Katina? Is she going to remove it from the child? And what does it mean that the child has been affected by the evil eye? The devil has done this. Does Mrs. Katina have the power to drive away the devil? That belongs to the Church. The Church has prayers against the evil eye. You will go to the Church. Perhaps the child’s feverish body immediately turns cool and becomes well, but its soul—and your own soul—has been poisoned. Has Satan truly withdrawn?

Did Mrs. Katina command him to leave?

He withdrew on his own, because he had accomplished his purpose: he had brought you into fellowship with him. Witches claim to undo spells, and so does the hodja. How can that be? Is it not the Church that breaks them? The Church breaks them. And when the Church breaks a spell in her own way, she frees both soul and body. When the witch or the hodja supposedly breaks it, as I told you, they do nothing of the kind. The body may seem to be freed, but the soul remains bound. Yet because the Church requires metanoia, Holy Confession, self-restraint, and fasting, we say, “Am I going to do all that? I will give the witch two thousand drachmas, and she will undo it for me.” And so you give the witch two thousand drachmas for what is merely empty air. But the Church of Christ has the mission of destroying the works of Satan...

Christ came into the world to destroy the works of Satan.

Today He destroys them through His Church and through His clergy. Consider where you will find yourself when death suddenly approaches, and where you will go, if today you have failed to make use of the Church. What is this refuge? I do not know whether you are aware that in ancient times, in the early Church, even persecuted men and murderers who fled for refuge into a church were not arrested there. They surrendered themselves to God, and God protected them. The Church of God protects you. The prosecutor had no right to enter and seize a man by force. Many people, even kings, fled for refuge to the Church, as history tells us. But we do not know these things. We think the little churches of Christ are simply places to visit for an afternoon outing by car, to light candles and the oil lamps before the Saints. “We went and lit the lamps,” they say, “so the Saints can see and not fall during the night.” You understand. Do we have any real relationship with the Church?

No Holy Confession, no fasting, no self-restraint—everything is despised. People go as though for sport or recreation and light the oil lamps in some country chapel dedicated to Saint Barbara, Saint John, or another Saint. Nothing more. What a fine arrangement! John Chrysostom, who has many excellent teachings on these matters, gives us his own definition of the Church. He says: “The altar of the Church is a heavenly table, receiving what comes from the earth and sending it up to heaven.” It receives things from below, he says, and sends them to heaven. Have you ever paid attention when the priest says, “Thine own of Thine own we offer unto Thee, on behalf of all and for all”? What do we mean by this?

We are saying: “What is Yours, we now offer for Your glory, and it has come from what is already Yours.” I came from my mother’s womb with empty hands. Here I found the wheat; here I found the flour; here I found the sieve. Here I made the prosphoron, and I send it to You to bless it and return it to me, so that through it You may send me Your grace, and through it I may receive Holy Communion for the remission of sins and the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Faith, faith, faith! And so he says that the altar “receives what comes from the earth and sends it up to heaven; it receives what comes from heaven and bestows it upon the earth.” It receives the offerings back after God has blessed them, and gives them to the people who receive Holy Communion and partake of them. “For the altar is fearful even to the angels.” Even the angels stand in awe of this altar.

“As they hover above in the heavenly places,” those who stand above tremble before this sight: God becomes man, enters into the bread, and is imparted to man, eaten and received by man in Holy Communion. For if His flesh were given to him visibly as flesh, would man eat it? Instead, He enters into the noblest forms of nourishment, bread and wine, and is received gladly into man. John Chrysostom also speaks of the value of the Church in these words: “As harbors are set in the sea...” Just as ships sail upon the sea...

and encounter dangers, yet find harbors where they put in and are saved from the storm, so the Church is upon the earth, established by God. “As God has set harbors in the sea, so He has established churches in the cities, so that those who flee here from the turmoil of worldly affairs may enjoy calm.” We go to the Church and receive peace. How many times does the priest come out and say, “Peace be unto all,” and, “In peace let us pray to the Lord”?

He is setting before us the peace of the Lord. A person enters the Church in one state and leaves in another. In the Old Testament, beasts entered the ark and beasts came out. Ravens entered and ravens came out. But here ravens enter and doves come out. Here wolves enter and lambs come out. A person’s whole countenance is changed within this Church. “For when people flee here for refuge, neither the onslaught of waves nor their raging pursuit can reach them.” Those things cannot enter; they cannot pursue you inside the Church.

“Neither the assaults of evildoers, nor the violence of winds, nor the plots of wild beasts can reach you; for this is a harbor free from all these things.” The Church, therefore, is a harbor for souls. A person finds rest and strength when he goes to the Church—especially when, as I said, he prepares himself and enters into communion with Christ, receiving Holy Communion. Then he receives great strength. That is why John Chrysostom continues: “Do not remain apart from the Church; do not distance yourself from the Church. Nothing is stronger than the Church. She is stronger than rock, higher than heaven, and broader than the earth. Neither the passing ages nor anything else can divide what is above from what is below; behold, everything flourishes.” And elsewhere he has another beautiful saying: “Let no one be deceived, unless he...”

“...unless he is within the sanctuary, he is deprived of the Bread of God.” Let no one be deceived, he says: if he is not at the altar, he is deprived, because only there is the Bread of God. “He who separates himself from the Church joins himself to an adulteress.” Satan is the adulterous lover of the human soul. Did not Chrysostom call worldly society adulterous and wicked? Who is an adulteress? A woman who goes with another man. And whom does the human soul have as her betrothed, as her Bridegroom—whom should she have? Christ. Does she go with Him? No. She goes with Barabbas; she goes with the devil and listens to him. She is an adulteress, like the woman who...

...does not remain faithful to her betrothed, to her husband, and so becomes an adulteress. In exactly the same way, the soul that does not remain faithful to Christ, to whom she was betrothed on the day of Baptism, is an adulteress. “He who separates himself from the Church joins himself to an adulteress.” But who can understand these things, and who is willing to understand them?

This, then, is what I urge you to do: make every effort you can. There is a tradition which says that only if your house has caught fire on all four sides and you cannot get away because you must deal with the emergency—only then are you excused from going to Church. Yet we stay away over trifles. Women, of course, sometimes have a reason...

...and should not go. They do not go because there are natural reasons for them not to go. But if there is a wedding or a baptism, they will go even in that condition. They should not go even then. They should not go and defile the place even then. She should remain at home, light her lampada, venerate the icon, and stay away during those days; she should not go even then. I say this because there are some women who will disregard all of this when a worldly social event is involved. That is my only reason for saying it. If, however, there is a valid reason—an illness, the need to remain beside my elderly father, or to care for my sick child—then you are among those mentioned in the words, “and those absent for good reason.” The Church takes you into account.

“The monastics,” they say, “and those engaged in a ministry of service”—we pray for them as well, so we should not judge them. During Holy Week, Saint Nektarios of Aegina once heard the sorrow of a nun. One evening at Holy Confession, she said to him in tears, “Your Eminence, I have not been in Church all week. I was with the goats; I was tending the monastery’s sheep. Am I really a Christian?” “My child,” he said, “do not say such a thing. You were carrying out a ministry of service. Besides, shall I tell you something? Every evening, when I censed your stasidi, I censed your angel. Your angel was there. Yes, you were guarding the goats. Otherwise they would die, and we would have no milk, no food, and so forth.”

“I was censing your angel,” he told her. There are people who are not physically in the Church, yet are in the Church; and there are people who are physically in the Church, yet are not truly in the Church. Some people are on duty: one is serving in the army; another must drive the first shift; another is a doctor on duty at the hospital; others have public responsibilities, and so on. What else can be done? Should everything be allowed to fall apart? Such service is justified. It is blessed by God—not merely forgiven by God, but blessed by God. Even so, if someone is on duty on Sunday, he should find an opportunity to go on Saturday, or attend the service on the evening before the following Sunday. He can go on another feast day, ask for a day off, or find some other opportunity. He must not say, “I am covered; I have no further obligation.”

You are blessed in your service; you are not simply excused from worship. In Athens, for example, we have the Divine Liturgy somewhere every day. Whatever time or day you choose, you can find a church open. There are Liturgies on Saturday mornings and on all the lesser feast days. There is even a dependency of the Holy Monastery of the Ascension in Pangrati where the Divine Liturgy is celebrated every day except Great Friday, when no Divine Liturgy is served. So there is no excuse for saying, “I did not go on Sunday, and that settles it, because I had work.” No. Everyone else, however, is obliged, in a certain sense, to be present and participate. They will come, as we say, for the common spiritual meal. The children will come to receive Holy Communion.

The elderly will come to receive Holy Communion. They will find a way to have communion with God and remain alive within the Church. For if we accept that we are inside the Ark, and that Noah gives from what the Ark contains so that the animals, the wild beasts, and the people may live, what would happen if one of Noah’s sons refused to eat? As you know, there were eight people inside the Ark: Noah and his wife; Shem, Ham, and Japheth, their three sons; and the wives of those three sons. Noah was the eighth—eight people altogether. If one of them had said, “I will not eat,” he would have suffered. When the Ark finally came to rest and it was time to come out, that person would have emerged dead, while all the others lived.

He would have come out dead because he had already been dead inside. So it is when I go to Church. Even if I am spiritually afflicted, I go to Church to pray. I stand off in a corner—not shouting, “Look who finally came!” or asking, “What are you doing at home?” and “Where are you going this afternoon?” Keep away from all of that. Go and withdraw into a corner. Go there to die to yourself, so that your spirit may rise upward and only your body remain below. We have said these things here so that you may receive a blessing from the Church. But when you go to Church, you must leave your sins outside, because otherwise your prayer does not ascend to Heaven. “God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.” Let us keep these things in mind tonight concerning attendance at Church and the spiritual benefit that flows from it. God willing, I would like to continue speaking to you about this.

Η Εκκλησία επηρεάζει και τους πέραν του τάφου. Και οι πέραν του τάφου, με χιλιετίες των αιώνων, από την Εκκλησία των Ορθοδόξων και από το θυσιαστήριο των Ορθοδόξων περιμένουν. Δεν είναι ιδιότερος, ζει κατ' όναρ μέσα έναν φτωχό. Γιατί έκανε ο φτωχός; Πού είναι η μάνα σου; Έφτασαν στη μάνα, στον Καθαρικό. Πού μένουν; Άντε, πού νηστεύουν;

Να φάνε και το βράδυ και ενδιαμέσως. Καλώς έκανες αυτά τα πράγματα, αλλά μην τα βλέπεις σαν αντικείμενα, μην τα βλέπεις σαν μπελά, μην τα βλέπεις σαν τίποτα. Δεν είναι ειδικά πράγματα, είναι και πραγματικά. Πηγαίνετε και εκεί, φόρεσε τα πράγματα, ζύγισε και δώσε την τιμή που πρέπει τόσο στο ένα όσο και στο άλλο. Ε, αυτό δεν γίνεται και σε αυτό μιλώ επάνω. Δεν λαμβάνουμε σοβαρώς υπόψη τι είναι αυτή η ψυχή και πώς θα την παρουσιάσουν με την βία οι άνθρωποι και «η Βασιλεία των Ουρανών»· «κληρονομήσουν τη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών». Σοβαρά, πώς;

Θα την κληρονομήσεις τη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών, αν δεν γίνεις βασιλόπουλο; Και ποιος θα σε κάνει βασιλόπουλο; Πώς όμως τον βασιλιά που θα σε κάνει βασιλόπουλο θα τον πάρεις με έχθρα, που θα έχει κηρύξει «δεν θα πάω»; Πώς είναι δυνατό να γίνεις βασιλόπουλο; Τι θα κληρονομήσεις, Βασιλεία Ουρανών; Ή δεν θα πεθάνεις εσύ ή δεν ενδιαφέρεσαι για τη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών; Μιλάς πολύ άμυνα, αλλά όταν λες, ε, κι εγώ σου λέω: «Δεν είναι τίποτα. Δεν υπάρχει τίποτα πέραν του τάφου». Συμφωνείτε; Εντάξει. Αν υπάρχει, τι ώρα κάνεις; Αν υπάρχει, τι ώρα κάνεις; Ένα στο δισεκατομμύριο, αν υπάρχει, τι ώρα γίνεται τότε; Κι ένα άλλο αυτό: εσύ δεν πιστεύεις κι εγώ πιστεύω και ζω μια ζωή συντηρητική και κάνω αυτά που λέει η Εκκλησία και ο Χριστός στα Ευαγγέλια. Πες μου, εάν υπάρχουν, τι έγινε με εσένα;

Δεν χρειάζεται. Εφτώχυνε κανένας που έδωσε δυο δραχμές στην Εκκλησία; Δεν εφτώχυνε, δεν άκουσα κανέναν. Εφτώχυνε από τα χαρτιά, εφτώχυνε από τις γυναίκες, εφτώχυνε από τους άντρες, εφτώχυνε από τα αλκοόλια, εφτώχυνε από τις απάτες. Από αυτά εφτώχυνε ο άνθρωπος, αλλά δεν εφτώχυνε ποτέ από την Εκκλησία. Άλλωστε δεν αναφέρει ο Παύλος στην Πρώτη προς Κορινθίους, το 16ο κεφάλαιο, να γίνονται συλλογές, οι λεγόμενες, για να προσφέρονται στους ανθρώπους που έχουν ανάγκη, στη χήρα, στο ορφανό, στον άρρωστο, σε έναν που θα ταξιδέψει, στον φυλακισμένο; Δεν έχουμε τέτοιες περιπτώσεις; Στη δεκάρα να μεταφράσεις αυτό το πράγμα. Αν είσαι εσύ ένας αύριο που θα έχεις την ανάγκη να σου βάλουν δυο δεκάρες, δεν θα θέλεις οι άλλοι να δώσουν; Πώς σκέφτεσαι έτσι; Πώς ακούς ότι είναι επιχείρηση η Εκκλησία;

Με όνειρα, ζούνε με φόβους, χάνουν τον ύπνο τους και εκεί και εκεί. Γίνονται όργανα του σατανά, όπως πολλές κατ’ εξοχήν λύνουν, λέγει, το μάτιασμα. «Φώναξε την κυρά Κατίνα, το παιδί ματιάστηκε». Τι είναι η κυρά Κατίνα; Θα ξεματιάσει το παιδί; Και τι θα πει ματιάστηκε; Ο διάβολος του την έκανε. Έχει τη δύναμη η κυρά Κατίνα να αποδιώξει τον διάβολο; Δουλειά είναι της Εκκλησίας. Η Εκκλησία έχει ευχές βασκανίας. Θα πας στην Εκκλησία. Παγάκι έγινε αμέσως το παιδί, καλά έγινε το σώμα του. Δηλητηριάστηκε η ψυχή του και η δική σου ψυχή. Απεσύρθη ο σατανάς;

Τον διέταξε η κυρά Κατίνα;

Τα λύνει σήμερα διά της Εκκλησίας του και διά του κλήρου του. Συντολογαριάζει πού θα βρεθείς σε επικείμενο θάνατο, πού θα πας, που σήμερα την Εκκλησία δεν τη χρησιμοποίησες. Τι είναι το καταφύγιο όλο; Και δεν ξέρω αν ξέρετε, παλιά, πρώτη Εκκλησία, και αυτοί οι διωκόμενοι, ακόμη και οι φονιάδες, όταν κατέφευγαν στην Εκκλησία, δεν τους συλλάμβαναν στην Εκκλησία. Παραδίδονταν στον Θεό και τους εφύλαγε ο Θεός. Σε φυλάει η Εκκλησία του Θεού. Δεν είχε δικαίωμα ο εισαγγελέας να μπει μέσα να τον βιάσει. Και πολλοί, και βασιλείς ακόμη, κατέφυγαν στην Εκκλησία, όπως μας αναφέρει. Αυτά δεν ξέρουμε εμείς. Νομίζουμε ότι είναι απλώς. Είναι τα εκκλησάκια του Χριστού να πάμε εμείς για ψυχαγωγία, για τα απογεύματα με το αυτοκίνητο, να ανάψουν τα κεριά, τα καντήλια των Αγίων. «Πήγαμε εμείς», λέει, «ανάψαμε τα καντήλια, να βλέπουν οι Άγιοι μην πέσουν τη νύχτα», καταλαβαίνετε. Έχουμε καμιά δουλειά με την Εκκλησία;

Ούτε εξομολόγηση, ούτε νηστεία, ούτε εγκράτεια, όλα υποτιμημένα, και πηγαίνουν για σπορ, για αναψυχή, και ανάψαν τα καντήλια στο εκκλησάκι εκτός, στην Αγία Βαρβάρα, στον Άγιο Ιωάννη και λοιπά. Τίποτα, ωραία δουλειά. Ο θείος Χρυσόστομος, ο οποίος έχει γνώμες πολύ καλές επάνω στα θέματα αυτά, έχει τη δικιά του γνώμη και θα ήθελα να σας δώσω τον ορισμό γύρω από την υπόθεση της Εκκλησίας. «Τὸ θυσιαστήριον», λέει, «τῆς Ἐκκλησίας οὐράνιός ἐστι τράπεζα, τὰ ἀπὸ γῆς δεχόμενον καὶ οὐρανῷ παραπέμπον». Τα παίρνει από κάτω, λέει, και τα στέλνει στον ουρανό. Έχετε προλάβει καμιά φορά εκεί που λέγει ο πάτερ: «Τὰ σὰ ἐκ τῶν σῶν σοὶ προσφέρομεν κατὰ πάντα καὶ διὰ πάντα»; Τι πάμε να πούμε;

...που δεν μένει πιστή στον μνηστήρα της, στον σύζυγό της, είναι μοιχαλίς. Έτσι ακριβώς και η ψυχή που δεν μένει πιστή στον Χριστό, τον οποίο αρραβωνίστηκε την ημέρα του βαπτίσματος, είναι μοιχαλίς. «Από της Εκκλησίας χωριζόμενος, μοιχαλίδι συνάπτεται». Αλλά ποιος μπορεί να τα καταλάβει αυτά τα πράγματα και ποιος θέλει να τα καταλάβει αυτά τα πράγματα;
