Summary

Human judgments cannot determine who is truly good or faithful, because every Christian is ultimately measured by Christ’s uncompromising standard. Christ’s empty tomb and victory over death distinguish Him from every merely human religious leader and promise eternal life to those who follow Him. Like Peter walking on the sea and an anchored ship, believers remain secure only by keeping their attention fixed on Christ and abiding in Him.

Among people, there is one group called good people, another called good Christians, and another whose members are even called faithful. Who is a true Christian?

“Be righteous like that man.” Yet if you examine each person separately, or all of them together, you may find that he is not a Christian at all, not a good person at all, and not faithful at all. For Christ alone knows who is good, who is faithful, and who is truly a good person or a good Christian. We human beings do not possess the standard by which we could measure this exactly. We must never rush to say, “All is well; that man—or I myself—must surely be good.”

We must labor for what is good and examine our path to see whether we are standing rightly. We must not assume that we stand rightly, that we are good, or that we are Christians able to withstand Christ’s measuring rod and Christ’s scales. Christ is uncompromising. He does not judge as one friend judges another when they eat and make merry together, or as a man judges his girlfriend, or a woman her boyfriend, when they sin together. God does not judge in that way. God is uncompromising. He has never made compromises with anyone. And for this very reason, He went so far as to shed even His own blood. He bore the Cross unto death.

That is something we have not done. So I do not know how you yourselves think about this matter or what is truly happening within you.

This evening, if you will permit me, I would like to say something related to this, something that will give each of us an opportunity to see roughly where we stand. Someone who considers himself faithful says, “I believe. Listen to me: I have Christ within me.” Another tells you, “I believe in a higher being. Surely something exists—do you think I am an unbeliever?” One believes in a higher power, another believes in God, and another even believes in Christ. All these people are counted among the good. After all, each person believes in his own way.

But does that create the conditions for salvation? A person must believe correctly and rightly, as Holy Scripture reveals and teaches. At one point Christ says, “Believe in God; believe also in Me.” Many believe in God but do not believe in Christ. Look, for example, at the Jehovah’s Witnesses, who come from among our own people. They say, “Of course I believe in God. But when you tell me that Christ is God, I cannot believe that. When you tell me that Christ rose from the dead, I cannot believe it. I see Him eating. I see Him weeping. I see Him walking. I see Him sleeping. I see Him asking questions. How can I believe that He is God?” And so the whole matter becomes a grotesque contradiction.

That is what happens with faith. It is therefore not enough for a person to believe in his own way. Do you remember what I told you the other day? Belshazzar was drinking wine before a thousand concubines, while they told him whatever he wanted to hear. But the hand appeared and wrote, “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin.” You were weighed, you were measured, and you were found wanting. God measured you by one standard, and in His sight the scales gave a different verdict. Those below may say, “No, you are worthy,” but God judges otherwise. There is another beautiful passage concerning Christ that helps explain what I am telling you. If you look at the sixteenth chapter of Matthew, you will find Christ asking His disciples—because they went about in the marketplace among the people—“Who do people say that I am?”

“What are the people saying?” He asks them. “What do they say?” So they repeated the opinions they had heard: “Some say that You are the Prophet Elijah; others say that You are the Prophet Jeremiah; and others that You are one of the prophets.” “Very well, that is what the people in the marketplace say. But who do you say that I, the Son of Man, am? Who do you believe Me to be?” Then Peter, with the spontaneous simplicity of a child’s heart, spoke up and said, “You are Christ, the Son of the living God.” “You are Christ, the Son of the living God.” Then Christ said, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah. Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah.”

“You did not say these things by yourself. My Father, God, placed these words upon your tongue so that you might declare rightly who I am.” Neither those who called Him Elijah, nor those who called Him Jeremiah, nor those who called Him one of the prophets were blessed. Only the man who confessed that He is Christ, the Son of the living God, was blessed; the others were not. So it is now, and so it has always been. Sadly, even among those who are called Christians, there are differing opinions about what it means to believe. A person believes in his own way, usually in whatever manner suits him, and does not believe rightly.

True faith comes rightly through the grace of the Holy Spirit, as it did in Peter’s case. So I do not know: what do you believe? Do you believe in a higher power, in a higher being, or in God? Or do you believe even in Christ merely as an exalted man, a reformer, an intelligent teacher, a communist—as some call Him—or a socialist? In what way do you believe in Christ? No description of Him and no kind of faith can save us unless we believe in Christ as the angel described Him to the Myrrh-bearing Women: “Whom do you seek? Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified.”

“He is not here; He is risen.” If we believe in Jesus, the Son of Mary, who was crucified, died, was buried, and rose again—“He is not here,” for He has risen—then the conditions for salvation begin to exist for us. But if a person believes anything else he chooses, believing only in his own way, he does not possess the conditions for salvation. Nor is believing alone enough. He must also act in accordance with what is proclaimed by the One in whom he believes. For Christ said, “He who believes in Me keeps My law; he who believes in Me keeps My commandments.”

If the lives of those called faithful were examined—even the lives of those who rightly confess that Christ is God—we would often find their way of life completely opposed to what the One in whom they claim to believe proclaims. A person must therefore begin by becoming firmly settled in the right faith in Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. There are many different shades of belief, especially in our own time. According to some statistics I recently heard, throughout this region and over in Canada there are four hundred varieties of Christians. Which one possesses the truth?

Should the truth belong to someone who discovered it yesterday, whose religion came into existence yesterday? Or does it belong to the faith that has existed since Christ was buried and rose again, when He sent out the twelve Apostles—those men who regenerated and renewed all these peoples, and from whom even our present reckoning of time began: the year 1979 today? From this fact alone, people will be judged and condemned. For what Christ said will be fulfilled: “By your own words I will judge you, wicked servant.” I will judge you by your deeds. For if such a person is questioned, we will say to him, “You write the year 1979. What does that mean? From what event are you counting?”

“Are you counting from the creation of the world? From the founding of Rome? From where do you count? You count from Jesus Christ, who was crucified. He is the very One you reject. He is the foundation of the year 1979. Why, then, have you changed this name?” Since you reject Him explicitly in your words while confessing Him through your actions, “By your own words I will judge you, wicked servant.” We ourselves are often foremost among the inconsistent, and for that reason we will be judged more severely. Yet we can discover that He truly is the real God. He is the One who conquered death. We cannot follow any founder of a so-called religion, since...

His burial shroud remains in the tomb. Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified, is the only One whose tomb is empty. All the others remain confined within their graves, whether they are called Buddha, Muhammad, Zoroaster, pope, Luther, or Russell—our first one, whoever he may be. Each one is confined to the tomb. Only the tomb of Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified, is empty. He alone succeeded in breaking the bonds of death, conquering death, and giving you eternal life. I would therefore be a great fool to follow anyone else. This is something tangible that I can see, and you see how that monument remains there to this day.

Last night you saw that unique, classic, unrepeatable scene that has taken place for approximately sixteen hundred years, since Saint Helena built the church over the tomb. On Holy Saturday, you see God appear like lightning only among the Orthodox—only among the Orthodox. It does not matter how many millions the others may number. They insult us over this, claiming that we have monopolized God, yet they have never rejoiced in this grace and do not wish to receive it. For Christ cannot be commanded; grace is a queen and cannot be commanded. Yet we alone, because of a certain defeatism and for other reasons, compromise in some matters and recognize their religion, recognize grace among them, recognize their Mysteries, and so forth.

We see Christ and the light of the Resurrection clearly. How, then, can these people have any connection with the right faith—the faith that has been preserved and that saves? For, as we have seen, it is right faith that saves: faith in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. Outside that faith there is no salvation.

Here especially, you will feel more deeply the need for what we are discussing tonight. Every day you will hear things on the radio and read them in printed publications. You will see and associate with people promoting many other theories and many kinds of religion. What will become of you then? Will you also grow confused and no longer know exactly what the truth is?

But these are human constructions, and one day they will set and disappear. What is true will remain. Everything counterfeit will pass away; it cannot withstand the righteousness of God. Therefore, examine yourselves. Right faith is difficult. It is hard for a person to walk rightly against the current, because whoever goes against the current will encounter every obstacle. The most demanding faith and praxis—the active ascetic life—is the Orthodox way within the Orthodox Church. Everything else is easy. That is why people do not want the Orthodox faith: it contains many “do nots” and many “noes,” unlike the others, who have leveled everything down. They ask nothing of people. They have created an easy path.

The Kingdom of Heaven. But Christ walked along a road filled with thorns. From the thorns placed upon His head to the nails driven through His feet, He opened a road along which every person, if he wishes, can go and meet Him. Yet if a person understands that this earthly span of time is not the end, and that he will live with Christ in a life that has no end—the life of which the Apostle writes, “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man what God has prepared for those who love Him”—then, after considering these things, he will say, “Let me suffer anything at all in this world.”

Those who became saints in this world passed through fire and sword. Not one of them entered Paradise with roses in his hands—not one. All those whose icons hang around us and adorn this church were people who suffered and even shed their blood. They did not live for the pleasures of this life, the gratification of the flesh, or the satisfaction of the ego. They suffered, were tortured, sawn apart, and burned, as Paul says in the eleventh chapter of his epistle to the Corinthians. They suffered, but they remain for all eternity. We come before them, light candles to them, and ask for their strength and their presence.

We ask for their intercessions, and many times we see miracles, both spiritual and bodily. Yet by worldly standards they were failures. The world often says, “This man is successful,” because somehow he managed to trample on others and rise above them, exploit weaker relatives and advance, resort to schemes and get ahead, harden himself toward others, help no one, and still rise. We regard such a man as successful, but in the eyes of Christ he is a failure. A person must fail in order to succeed—fail in this world in order to succeed in the world to come. These are strange things. Was Christ Himself successful by worldly standards? He suffered a shameful death—the Cross!

In the end they led Him out and crucified Him—God Himself. He was taken down, and not even one of His relatives was there to care for Him. Strangers cared for Him and laid Him in the tomb. Do you understand how harsh this was? And of course people would have said, “A man like that got what he deserved.” Then consider the first after Him, the honorable Forerunner: “Among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Forerunner.” And what was the outcome? There was his head, treated as though it were a football. Was it not cut off and given as a prize to a corrupt woman because she danced one night? Can the mind grasp it? Can reason comprehend such a thing? God allowed the head of this man of God, this prophet, to become a prize there, in that place...

On that dance floor, on that night of corruption and dishonor. “Among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist.” And yet someone may wonder, “Is that testimony enough?” Please, let us take these things to heart. He is the Forerunner—the Forerunner—and when our Church came to compose his dismissal hymn, the apolytikion, it stopped short.

It does not merely say to him, “The memory of the righteous is celebrated with hymns of praise.” Rather: “The testimony of the Lord is sufficient for you, O Forerunner. We have nothing to add. What could we possibly say about you? If we tried to add anything, we would probably only spoil it. The testimony of the Lord is sufficient for you: that among those born of women no man greater than you has arisen.” And yet what was his life like? Did he ever eat a warm meal? Did he ever wear warm clothing? Did he ever have another person beside him? Did he ever speak with anyone or hear a flattering word from anyone? Tell me. He spoke with the wild beasts in the desert, and he spoke the truth to everyone, whoever they were.

They took his head as the reward for a dance. And yet he remains for all eternity, together with all those saints whose icons you see there. And if you look at the icon of Christ’s descent into Hades, you will see him there as well. He had descended and preached there, together with Abel, all the righteous, and all the prophets who had spoken of Christ’s descent into Hades. If the outside of this church is ever adorned with Byzantine iconography, you will see that icon too. And what of the divine John Chrysostom, the tongue of Christ? In Cucusus of Armenia he was consumed by fever, soaked through two or three times, and unseen by anyone. “Ah, that wretch—what could he have done?” others would say. How could they know who he truly was—that he was the tongue of Christ?

And he died there and was buried there. Twenty or thirty years later, his body was brought to Constantinople when his disciple Proclus took an interest and transferred it there, and only then did the people’s hearts melt. Who has ever reflected on these things and resolved, “Whatever happens, I will stand against the spirit of the age; I will stand against it”? For when a person is swept along by this world—by the flesh, by fashion, by worldly opinion, by self-interest, and by egotism—he cannot stand firm. He needs watchfulness and struggle; he must go against the current, with the help of Christ. By himself, a person can never resist the current. It will sweep him away.

To remain upright, he will be tempted to maneuver and compromise. Water will enter his boat; he will water down his wine; he will do things Christ does not want. He will try to compromise with the world, to avoid confronting it or displeasing it. Many times you will even see him turn against God and say, “Why? What have I done?” Many Christians say, “What have I done to God?” But what has He done to you? Tell me, what has He done? I have met people whose household was visited by illness, and immediately their superficial, outward piety vanished—the same people who used to light great candles and say that they believed. “What have I done to God?” they cried. But what has God done to you? Tell me. Has someone dear to you fallen ill? Does God work through illness? Does God create illness? Illness is caused by the devil. God can use illness and...

bring good from it; God heals illness. But have you freed His hands, so to speak, to heal you? And would it truly benefit you if He healed you? Perhaps tomorrow you would become worse, and now is the time for you to depart. If, while confined to bed, you do not practice metanoia and repent, go to Holy Confession, or receive Holy Communion—and neither does your family—what will you do once you are released from that bed? If you will not listen now, while illness has you by the leg, but do nothing and merely say, “When I get well,” then you are trying to blackmail God: “Make me well.” Why—so that you will vote for Me? Shall I heal you so that you will vote for Me? I have no need of your vote. Do not let Satan deceive you. It is for your own good. I do not want someone merely to be called a believer. I want you to be faithful in difficult times and in easy times, standing upright whatever may happen. If you are good only when times are good, but abandon Me when times are hard...

are you truly faithful? You do not prove that your faith is true. When you say, “Glory to You, O God,” in a difficult moment—for example, during an illness—what are you doing? You are acknowledging that He knows better and that, if He permits and endures this thing, there is a purpose. What purpose? Some good for me. Then it becomes a source of good for me. I believe in Him; I acknowledge His almighty power, His perfect wisdom, His love, and His providence. Yes, that is true faith. For it is in someone’s difficult moments that you show your love and faithfulness to him. When shall I see whether you will remain beside him? When shall I see whether you stand by the one in whom you claim to believe and whom you claim to acknowledge? In easy times? Yes...

But if you run away in the difficult hours, what kind of faith is that? Unfortunately, some people do not pay attention to this. In word they say they believe, but by their deeds they reject Him. Many even blaspheme Him; many renounce their faith and become deniers. And if at times we examine our past life, we will find that we deserve not only the cross we now bear—a long illness, financial ruin, a scandal in the home, a death, a bereavement, or whatever else—but many such crosses. We often give thanks while paying many old debts, for many things we did in the past that remain unsettled. We neither repented nor confessed them; and even if we confessed them, we did not make amends.

Did we return what we stole or restore what we unjustly took? We did not ask forgiveness, and the accounts remain open. God therefore permits these things and waits, allowing them so that perhaps some debts may be offset and certain matters set right. God is wise; God is love. Do not draw away. Do not give up. Do not be afraid. Do you believe? If you believe, let nothing terrify you. Peter said that he believed, and as long as he believed and looked Christ straight in the eyes, he walked upon the sea. He worked a miracle: the water became firm beneath him, and he walked upon the sea. But when he turned and looked at the waves, which appeared stormy, he became afraid and began to sink.

Christ turned to him and said, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt? Why did you doubt?” Peter at least had the readiness to understand and cry out, “Lord, help me; I am perishing!” He understood that there was nothing else to grasp, and God condescended to him. He could have said, “Since this is how you think, I will not help you.” And who was this? Peter. However skilled and experienced a person may be in life, when grace abandons him, he will sink to the very depths of Hades. Peter could not take even two steps, though surely it was not blood but seawater that flowed in his veins—a seasoned sailor from childhood on the Sea of Tiberias. And yet this was Peter. He did not drown there. You see, he cried, “Lord, help me!” and Christ seized him by the hand.

He said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” His faith had wavered. He saw the waves coming toward him and was terrified. He forgot that he had been walking upon the sea, just as we forget. Although we have seen God many times in our lives, seen miracles in our homes, and seen miracles through the Most Holy Theotokos and the Saints, when something happens—a serious illness, severe poverty, financial ruin, an earthquake, a war, or some other calamity—we lose our bearings and begin to sink. Then the curses and fears begin. Such reactions show that we are believers, but not believers of true and steadfast faith. They reveal us as believers of little faith or, in the final analysis, as unbelievers. And this is our own fault, because...

on the one hand we believe in God, but on the other hand we believe in a weak God. If the One in whom we believe is mighty, then lean upon this Rock of Ages, and you will never be lost. You have seen those great iron posts on the docks, called bollards, have you not?

Ships come in, cast out a great rope, and tie themselves to them. Small boats tie up there, and great ships tie up there. Once they are secured, whatever the weather may be, they are not in danger. They also cast their anchor and are safe. The storm may shake them this way and that, lift them up and toss them about, but they remain fastened to the Rock of Ages.

So too must the believer be: not tossed about by the waves and not afraid, but watchful. Yet instead of casting his anchor upon Christ, he casts it upon himself. Imagine a ship casting its anchor into its own hold. Would it have any security? A person places his trust only in himself—in his own strength, his wallet, his learning, his money, and so forth. Such a person is in danger. But when he is fastened to Christ, he is not in danger. And do you know what Paul says? I do not know whether you have read it. Near the end of the sixth chapter of Hebrews, he says that Christians have their anchor in Heaven. Everyone else casts the anchor downward; the Christian casts it upward, because Christ has gone there as a forerunner on our behalf.

That is what a person holds on to. Whatever may happen in the Christian life, he remains fastened there. It is like riding on a trolley and holding one of the straps: whatever happens, you keep your grip. You will sway, of course, but you will not fall or be thrown forward or backward, because you are holding on. So it is with Christ. This Christ—the true and genuine Christ, the Christ of the Orthodox faith—is the Rock of Ages. But it depends on us. Keep this in mind: Christ does not seize us; we must take hold of Christ. “Hold me, my Christ!” No—I will not hold you. You must hold on. I am the handhold. Take hold and remain close to Me. If you do not want to hold on, you will suffer every misery in your life. Christ does not hold a person against his will. “Abide in Me, and I in you. Abide in Me, and I in you.”

I will abide in you if you first abide in Me. But this is precisely what we fail to do. In word, we believe in Him as God, as love, as sacrifice, as almighty, as all-wise, and as providence; yet we do not act by doing what He commands, so that we may fear nothing, whatever happens in our life. Secondly, we often fail to examine and reflect on why certain things happen to us even though we are believers. Satan comes and says, “You are a believer; you believe in Christ. Sufferings, crosses, torments, and tribulations should be for other people—for sinners. Why should such things happen to you?” On the contrary, it is precisely the believer who will suffer these things. The orange tree that bears oranges is the one children throw stones at.

The trees that bear no oranges are left alone. And Christ is not a punisher. Satan is the sadist who torments people, and Satan does not trouble those who belong to him. That is why most people who follow Satan’s path suffer fewer hardships and live much better in this world—but they will fare far worse in the world to come.

When a person reflects that there is another life, he understands that it is better for him to suffer in this world for the sake of that life. Let me give you a simple example. There are two jobs. One pays five thousand dollars, and the other pays eight thousand. The job that pays five thousand, however, provides a pension and medical care, while the one that pays eight thousand does not. Which job will you take?

I think you will take the one that pays five thousand, because it gives you a pension and medical care and thus secures your future. That is reasonable, and if you tell someone about your choice, he will say, “You did well.” You will go without certain things and a little extra comfort that another three thousand dollars a year might have given you. Yet you are making the right choice, because you are securing something for the future. We are human beings; we do not know how long we shall live or what we may be able to do tomorrow. Why, then, do you not act in the same way in your spiritual life? You go without certain pleasures of this world, of the flesh and of the ego, so that you may gain that spiritual world. Why are you swept away by the world, by your flesh, or by your lack of faith that Christ will always be good to you?

You will say to me, “Is Christ not always good?” That is not what I mean. When we say that He is “good,” we mean that He will simply overlook our sins and our mistakes. That is how we use the word: we will do what is wrong, and He will forgive everything. Christ is not like that. We shall be punished for these things. Sin carries its punishment within itself. Put your hand into the fire and you will be burned. Even if they do not amputate it, it will hurt afterward and torment you whenever the weather changes. Sin likewise contains within itself the power to tyrannize and torment a person. A person must therefore be watchful and believe rightly in Christ. Whatever Christ permits is ultimately for that person’s benefit, because he is being purified. It is like refining gold.

Gold is often placed in the furnace so that it may become twenty-four carats and all the impurities may be removed. “Like gold in the furnace,” Solomon says, the human soul—and the whole person—must pass through these afflictions. We shrink from suffering and do not accept what God permits. God does not create these afflictions, yet we are benefited by them. We should never complain about anything that happens to us. Instead, we should turn to Him and say, “Yes, we deserve what is happening to us. We deserve this illness, this failure, this sorrow. Help us. We repent; we are changing our lives.” Then He has the power to set things right, to heal the wounds that have been inflicted, to bring good out of them once again, and to watch over us in His own way. There is no evil...

...in this world except sin. All the things called evils—death, cancer, poverty, wars, earthquakes, plagues, and floods—are only apparent evils; they are not truly evil. There is only one evil: sin, which separates man from God. Once, in the days of John Chrysostom, a great earthquake struck Constantinople and was leveling the city. John Chrysostom climbed upon the ruins and delivered a festal sermon, a Paschal sermon, and the people thought he had gone mad. In the midst of so much mourning and devastation, how could he speak with such joy? How could these things possibly go together? And yet...

...at one point he said something like this: “You may think that I am beside myself because I speak so festively amid the ruins. I rejoice because, since the earthquake struck yesterday afternoon, there has been no fornicator, no man given to sexual vice, no adulteress, and no usurer.” No sin had been committed there since the earthquake. Christ had permitted the earthquake, and no sin was committed; John Chrysostom rejoiced that for twenty-four hours there had been no sins. Whether houses had fallen, stones had collapsed, or some people had died was secondary to the fact that no sins had been committed for a whole day. Therefore, let us ask Christ to grant us right faith and right conduct. As I have told you, this is difficult for the Christian.

Satan comes and plants doubts in a person, saying, “If He were God, would they have crucified Him? If He were God, would He allow you to suffer?” and so forth. All these questions have answers, but we do not know them, and by means of them Satan shakes our faith. It is difficult for a person to pass through this trial rightly. He must read about these matters or seek counsel from people who understand them better—people with experience—so that he may have a sound understanding of how God acts in such circumstances. He must also know what awaits him. Are you a Christian? Prepare yourself for temptation. “If you come,” says the Wisdom of Sirach, “to serve God”—to do something good, to believe rightly and act rightly—“prepare your soul for temptation.” They will crucify you too.

They crucified the One in whom you believe. What do we suffer from our own relatives and acquaintances? The moment we decide to walk in God’s way, the mockery begins. They will call us Jesuits, pious fanatics, religious zealots—they will call us every name imaginable. Do you have the courage to stand firm, or will you go along with them because you cannot confess your faith? Here, unfortunately, it becomes clear that we cannot prove our faith. Suppose you visit a home and they serve you a non-fasting sweet. On one side stands Christ, and on the other stands your acquaintance.

In the middle stands the devil, tempting your belly, and you side with the devil and your acquaintance and deny Christ. Where is your faith? How will you keep the Wednesday fast when you reach out and take the sweet? I am not telling you to draw a pistol. You are simply obliged to confess your faith, though even that feels like a knife in your heart. The words do not easily come from your mouth: “Please forgive me, but I should not eat this today; it is Wednesday.” You do not say it, although you are a Christian and ought to confess. This is a confession of faith—of right faith—and Christ expects it. He says, “If you do not confess Me before men, neither will I confess you tomorrow before My Father who is in Heaven.” Here, before a mere sweet, you did not confess Me.

Even if it were wartime and you might never find such a thing again, do not take it—not even if it is a marron glacé. Say, “Please give me something else. Give me a glass of water.” They may answer, “But we are Christians too.” Then why, on a Wednesday or Friday, do you serve food that breaks the fast—especially on Friday, a day of mourning, when Christ was crucified and our God died? Why do you bring it out and serve it? I did not come to a Jewish home; if that were where I was invited, I would not have come. I came to the friendly home of Christians and expected to find food appropriate to the fast. You must be able to say that you will not take it. Otherwise, your Christianity remains in theory and not in your deeds. I do not think many people could easily resist such a sweet.

They will side with the sweet and with the lady serving it. Is that faith? Such faith reveals that you have another god. Christ expects something from the believer, and the other person also expects to see an example in you who claim to believe. When he sees you saying that you believe while doing the opposite—the very same thing the world does—that is not faith. Where can it lead? The believer is like a tree. If its fruit is not sweet but poisonous, what am I to say? Do you remember the Jewish woman in Athens whom I mentioned yesterday? Another woman went to the clinic for her fourth abortion. In the bed beside her, the Jewish woman was giving birth to her fourth or fifth child. The Christian woman thought she could instruct her and make her a Christian. But the Jewish woman said:

“I would never want a God like yours, who makes such beasts of people that they kill their own children.” Are you going to speak to her about Christ? She is looking at your life. You are a Christian, you believe in Christ as God, and yet you have killed your children. “I do not want such a God,” she says, “who makes such beasts of people that they kill their children.” Fine Christians indeed! How could I go into a home tomorrow, on Wednesday, be served meat, eat it, and then have others learn of it or see me? They would say, “What Panagopoulos teaches is meant for everyone else. I saw him eating meat on Wednesday.” Should I not practice what I preach? How could it be otherwise? I should not eat it. I may have a blessing to eat it—but the other person does not know that.

My conduct must agree with my faith: right belief and right practice. This is good for me, and it becomes a lesson and a source of edification for the other person. That is Christianity. That is what we lack. Someone will also observe me at a funeral. What shall I do there? How shall I conduct myself? When our mother died, my brother, who was a general, came in and said to me, “Have we all gone mad in here?” I had said nothing to him, but I was not weeping; I had shaved and put on my best suit on the day I buried my mother. I was not observing the usual outward signs of mourning. To my brother the general, this seemed like madness. “Have we all gone mad in here?” he said. Who told you such a thing? He did not understand what it meant.

The other person watches you closely and hears you clearly. He says, “Unless I see, I will not believe,” and he waits for an example. How, then, can we profess Christianity, enter churches, celebrate our feasts, and do so many other things when our lives remain so far removed from our faith? Let your faith be joined to right conduct. Always show...

...that you believe in the true God—in Him who loves us, who cares for us, and who is concerned for us both in this age and in the age to come.

For I tell you: you may not know how to preach; you may not be a preacher. Yet your life is a greater sermon than one delivered from the pulpit, because it consists of deeds. This is why Christ said, “Whoever does and teaches.” First you do what you teach to another. This is where Christ, His teaching, and our faith differ from every other kind of belief. Christ Himself kept everything He preached. He told us to forgive our enemies.

He was the first to forgive those who crucified Him, and He even offered an excuse for them before God the Father: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Which of the other founders of religions ever preached, “Love your enemies”? You find this nowhere else. The principle of the others is, “Your death is my life”; Christ Himself died so that others might live. These are extraordinary things. This teaching is beyond all other teaching; nothing else can be compared with it. No one else taught it, and no one else put it into practice. Others raised their trophy of victory over the graves of their enemies. Christ raised the trophy of victory over the grave of the Leader Himself, as I told you earlier. This is why faith is necessary. Sometimes we are shaken. It is true—we are shaken. Sometimes we lose our bearings.

We must take courage again. In the fourteenth chapter of John, from the first verse onward, it says: “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Believe in God; believe also in Me.” A moment comes when we lose our bearings. Satan, that cunning one, suddenly overtakes us, and we fall into despair. We lose our trust, and that itself is a blasphemy. We think that everything is over, that we have been abandoned, and that nothing remains.

It is only a cloud, only a storm; it will pass. Behind it is the same sun. Even if it hides itself for a moment, it does so to test us and make us more experienced. Have you never seen a mother hide so that her little child will begin looking for her? The child runs about crying, “Mommy, Mommy, Mommy! Are you here?” and then the mother appears. She is training the child. In the same way, Christ sometimes hides Himself as though He were not there. Yet He is present and fills all things, ready to help, ready to guide us by the hand, and ready to work miracles in every need and every difficulty. But at times He hides Himself—I repeat—in order to teach man. The person is benefited and edified. Examine yourselves, then, and see where you stand in relation to right faith and right conduct.

Do you have a living relationship with the Church? Do you have a living relationship with the Mysteries? How do you set your sins right? Do you deal with them as Christ commanded, through metanoia—repentance—and confession? Do you go to those to whom He gave the authority to bind and loose sins, or have you devised your own way? “I believe in God, but I do not go there.” Do you approach for Holy Communion? Do you believe that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from every sin, that it is given for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life? It is not given merely for long life, strong bones, or a gold tooth, but for the purification of the soul. Do you believe that when you sin and Christ comes forth through the Holy Doors, He is grieved when we do not approach to receive Holy Communion?

Do you believe that Christ is grieved when a mother brings her child to receive Holy Communion but does not receive herself, because she has killed her other children or prevents others from being conceived? Do you understand this? This is what true faith means: faith joined to action. The chanter sings, “Holy is God, holy is the Lord.” Yes, I know that He is holy. But are you? When the call comes, “With fear of God,” will the chanter come down to receive Holy Communion? Will the sacristan who serves here? Will the members of the parish council, who care for the house of the Lord and its proper order? Will they come forward? For salvation is found there. These are the things that should concern us. We are dealing with Almighty God, not with some human being or politician. If, then, the conditions I have described are not present in us, let us take care to set things right, little by little. We did not hear these things before? I accept that. But did we ever want to hear them?

Did we want to read and learn? How many other things did we once not know and then learned? We read, went to school, bought recordings and other materials, listened to the radio, asked questions, and did whatever else was needed. But if we are honest, we did not do the same for our faith. We remained at a rudimentary level, with whatever we learned at school. Can I truly be a Christian like that? You ask someone, “You know, a pipe has burst in the house. Do you know what might be wrong?” He answers, “Am I a plumber? Ask a plumber.” You ask another person, “Whenever I plug something into that socket, the fuse blows. Do you know anything about it?” He says, “What am I, an electrician? Ask an electrician.” He admits that he knows nothing. But if you say anything to him about Christianity, he replies, “Oh, we learned all that at school.” Do you understand? So what can you say to such a person? And what will God say to him tomorrow?

Did he become a chemist because at school he mixed water and oil, or water and vinegar? Or did we become engineers because, as far as I remember, we drew rhombuses and worked out all sorts of remarkable things at school? Or has someone mastered learning simply because he attended secondary school and was taught his lessons? The faith is timeless and unchanging. It comes from God; it is not a human invention that needs anything added to it or taken away from it. Yet he knows nothing about it. Where, then, is all this knowledge he claims to have?

In any case, keep whatever you believe is right in what I have said, and whatever you understand not to have been right, leave that with me.

Μέσα στους ανθρώπους, μία τάξη που λέγεται καλή, τάξη ανθρώπων, άλλη τάξη που λέγεται καλή, τάξη χριστιανών, άλλη που λέγονται και πιστοί ακόμη. Ανάληψη, Ευαγγελισμός, Ησύχιος ο Πρεσβύτερος, Ευαγγελισμός, Ευαγγελισμός. Ποιος είναι πραγματικός χριστιανός;

Αν εξεταστεί η ζωή των λεγομένων πιστών, έστω και των ορθώς φρονούντων ότι ο Χριστός είναι ο Θεός, θα βρούμε ότι είναι τελείως αντίθετη πολλές φορές η ζωή από εκείνα που κηρύττει Εκείνος που λένε ότι πιστεύουν. Θα πρέπει λοιπόν να ξεκινήσει ο άνθρωπος και να κατασταλάξει ότι πιστεύει σωστά στον Ιησού, τον Εσταυρωμένο, τον Ναζαρινό. Υπάρχουν πολλές αποχρώσεις πίστεως και μάλιστα σήμερα στις ημέρες μας. Από μια στατιστική που έγινε, που έμαθα τελευταίως, εδώ γύρω σας και από τον Καναδά γύρω, κυκλοφορούν τετρακόσιες αποχρώσεις χριστιανών. Ποιος την έχει την αλήθεια;

από το ένα μέρος πιστεύουμε στον Θεό, από το άλλο μέρος πιστεύουμε σε έναν αδύναμο Θεό. Διότι, αν είναι δυνατός Αυτός που πιστεύουμε, ακούμπησε σε αυτόν τον βράχο των αιώνων και δεν πρόκειται να χαθείς ποτέ. Έχετε υπόψη σας κάτι μεγάλους πασσάλους σιδερένιους, που λέγονται παπάδες, που υπάρχουν στα μουράγια;

Όταν ο άνθρωπος σκεφτεί ότι υπάρχει και άλλη ζωή, συμφέρει να υποφέρει στον κόσμο τούτον για εκείνον. Σας πω ένα απλό παράδειγμα. Έχουμε δύο δουλειές. Η μία δουλειά έχει 5.000 δολάρια, η άλλη έχει 8.000 δολάρια. Η μεν μία με τα 5.000 έχει σύνταξη όμως και ιατρική περίθαλψη, η άλλη με τα 8.000 δεν έχει. Σε ποια δουλειά θα πας;

νομίζω θα πας με αυτή με τις 5.000, που θα έχεις τη σύνταξη και που θα έχεις και την περίθαλψη, για να εξασφαλίσεις το μέλλον σου. Αυτή είναι η λογική. Και αν το πεις σε κάποιον, θα σου πει «καλά έκανες». Θα στερηθείς ορισμένα πράγματα, που θα μπορούσες να έχεις κάποια μικρή άνεση περισσότερη, αν είχες 3.000 δολάρια ακόμη τον χρόνο. Λοιπόν, όμως κάνεις πολύ σωστά, διότι θα εξασφαλίσεις κάτι. Άνθρωποι είμεθα, δεν ξέρουμε πώς θα ζήσουμε και τι μπορούμε να κάνουμε αύριο. Γιατί δεν κάνεις έτσι και στο πνευματικό μέρος; Στερείσαι ορισμένα καλούδια του κόσμου τούτου, της σαρκός και του εγωισμού, προκειμένου να κερδίσεις τον πνευματικό κόσμο εκείνον. Γιατί παρασύρεσαι από τον κόσμο, παρασύρεσαι από τη σάρκα σου ή από την ολιγοπιστία σου ότι ο Χριστός θα είναι πάντοτε καλός;

Σχέση με την Εκκλησία έχετε; Σχέση με τα μυστήρια; Πώς τακτοποιείτε τις αμαρτίες σας; Τις τακτοποιείτε όπως ο Χριστός έχει πει, δια μετανοίας και εξομολογήσεως; Προσέρχεστε σε αυτούς που τους έδωσε το δικαίωμα να δεσμούν και να λύουν τις αμαρτίες ή βρήκατε κάποιο τρόπο δικό σας; «Πιστεύω στο Θεό, αλλά δεν πηγαίνω προς τα εκεί». Προσέρχεστε εις την Θείαν Κοινωνία; Πιστεύετε ότι το αίμα του Ιησού Χριστού καθαρίζει ημάς από πάσης αμαρτίας; Ότι είναι εις άφεσιν αμαρτιών και ζωήν την αιώνιον; Και δεν είναι για χρόνια πολλά, ούτε για κόκα, ούτε για χρυσό δοντάκι, αλλά είναι για κάθαρση της ψυχής. Πιστεύετε ότι αμαρτάνετε και λυπείται ο Χριστός όταν βγαίνει στην πύλη και δεν πηγαίνουμε εμείς να κοινωνήσουμε;

Πιστεύετε ότι λυπείται ο Χριστός όταν πηγαίνει η μάνα, κοινωνεί το παιδί και αυτή δεν κοινωνεί, γιατί έχει σκοτώσει τα άλλα ή αποφεύγει τα άλλα; Το ξέρετε αυτό; Αυτό θα πει πίστη σωστή, συνδεδεμένη με πράξη. Ψάλλει ο ψάλτης: «Άγιος ο Θεός, Άγιος Κύριος». Ναι, το ξέρω ότι είναι Άγιος. Συ είσαι; Στο «μετά φόβου» θα κατέβει ο ψάλτης να κοινωνήσει; Ο νεωκόρος, ο οποίος διακονεί εδώ; Η επιτροπή, η οποία ενδιαφέρεται για τον οίκον του Κυρίου, για την ευπρέπειαν του οίκου; Αυτοί θα προσέλθουν; Γιατί εκεί είναι η σωτηρία. Αυτά πρέπει να απασχολούν τον άνθρωπο. Έχει να κάνει με τον Παντοδύναμο Θεό. Δεν έχει να κάνει με κανέναν άνθρωπο ή με κανέναν πολιτικό. Αν, λοιπόν, δεν υπάρχουν αυτές οι προϋποθέσεις που σας λέγω, να φροντίσουμε να τις τακτοποιήσουμε. Σιγά-σιγά. Δεν ακούσαμε; Το παραδέχομαι. Θελήσαμε να ακούσουμε;

Να διαβάσουμε; Πόσα πράγματα δεν τα ξέραμε και τα μάθαμε; Διαβάσαμε, πήγαμε σε σχολεία, διαβάσαμε, πήραμε κασέτες, πήραμε πράγματα, ακούσαμε ραδιόφωνα, ξέρω εγώ, ρωτήσαμε. Δεν κάναμε το ίδιο για την πίστη μας, να είμαστε αληθείς, δεν κάναμε το ίδιο. Μείναμε σε μια υποτυπώδη κατάσταση, ό,τι μάθαμε στο σχολείο. Μπορώ να είμαι χριστιανός; Ρωτάς κάποιον και του λες: «Ξέρεις, έσπασε η σωλήνα στο σπίτι κλπ. Μήπως ξέρεις τι έπαθε;» «Μα υδραυλικός είμαι εγώ να ξέρω; Υδραυλικό θα ρωτήσεις». Ρωτάς τον άλλον: «Βάζω την πρίζα εκεί πέρα και καίει η ασφάλεια. Ξέρεις τίποτα;» «Τι είμαι, ηλεκτρολόγος είμαι εγώ; Ηλεκτρολόγο θα ρωτήσεις». Δεν ξέρει τίποτα. Άμα του πεις τίποτα για χριστιανικά, «Όχι, αυτά τα ξέρουμε από το σχολείο». Καταλάβατε; Ε, λοιπόν, τι θα του πεις αυτού; Τι να του πει αύριο ο Θεός;

Έγινε χημικός γιατί έβαλε νερό και λάδι στο σχολείο και κάναμε νερόλαδο εκεί πέρα και νερόξυδο; Ή έγινε, ξέρω εγώ, διότι φτιάχναμε ρόμβους και πράγματα και θαύματα, γίναμε μηχανικοί διότι τα κάναμε στο σχολείο; Ή έμαθε γράμματα γιατί πήγε στο γυμνάσιο και διδαχθήκαμε γράμματα; Είναι κλασικό, δεν αλλάζει η θρησκεία, είναι από το Θεό, δεν είναι ανθρώπινο κατασκεύασμα ώστε να έχει ανάγκη συμπληρώματος ή αφαιρέματος, και δεν ξέρει τίποτα. Πού είναι, λοιπόν, αυτά τα πράγματα;
