Summary

Ignorance of Holy Scripture leads people into error because Scripture reveals God’s commandments and the path to the Kingdom of Heaven. The lecturer’s question about Elijah killing the prophets of Baal was resolved when Scripture was interpreted through Scripture and the relevant command in Deuteronomy was considered. The parable of the wedding garment warns that no one enters the Kingdom by a self-invented path or through permissive spiritual counsel that excuses disobedience.

Following on from these sermons, and specifically from the two concerning Holy Scripture and the harm that comes from ignorance of Holy Scripture.

In speaking on this subject, I also said something that may perhaps awaken your interest, so that a person may examine his problems and see whether his conclusions stand up against what Scripture says. You will remind me what first prompted us to speak

about Scripture, and what happens to people who do not pay attention to it. Our Christ said, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures.” It is true that a person falls into pitiful error if he does not know the Scriptures. Consequently, he does not know the law, he does not know the commandments of Christ, he does not know the will of God, and he does not know the right path leading to the Kingdom of Heaven. There is no matter of concern to man that is not addressed in Scripture. Everything has been resolved; Scripture has anticipated and spoken about everything, both his spiritual concerns and his material concerns.

It has left nothing out. And even if we accept that something has remained obscure, the Holy Fathers come and supply what is needed; the Ecumenical Councils come and supply what is needed; and the Apostles came, left instructions of their own, and supplied what was needed. Thus, through the combination of the Old and New Testaments, the judgment of the Holy Fathers, and the judgment of the Ecumenical Councils, a person has complete guidance and full light on all these matters. I remember fourteen years ago—or perhaps fifteen—a gentleman who had been led astray into the heresy of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. He later left them and fell in with the so-called Evangelicals.

He stumbled over the interpretation of a particular verse. They accept no Tradition, no patristic writings—nothing at all. They firmly believe that they possess such grace of the Holy Spirit that they can interpret the Scriptures themselves. They need no one. They regard everything else as human commandments. That is why they often say to us, “Does Scripture say this? If Scripture does not say it, I do not accept it.” So this verse was obscure to him, and he did not know its interpretation, but he would not humble himself enough to ask anyone. He turned to prayer, and every afternoon, after returning from work, he prayed to our Lord on his knees for three hours without interruption.

He begged the Lord to grant him illumination so that he might interpret the verse correctly. He had reached the eighty-second day. Just think: multiply eighty-two by three. That is two hundred and forty-six hours on his knees, waiting for our Lord—as he believed—to reveal the interpretation of one verse to him. On the eighty-second day, while he was kneeling, he received a visitor: a tall, strikingly handsome, imposing young man, who tapped him on the back, on the shoulder. He sprang up and looked at him in terror. “Are you afraid?” the young man asked. “What are you doing there?”

“I am praying.” “What are you praying for, and to whom are you praying?” “I am praying to my Lord,” he replied. “And what are you asking Him for?” “The interpretation of a verse.” “Why are you praying for that?” He answered, “Because He told us, ‘Ask, and it will be given to you; knock, and it will be opened to you.’” “But must you knock at Heaven’s door to obtain this interpretation?” the young man asked. “Does the interpretation not exist on earth, that you must knock at Heaven’s door?” The man was stunned. “You are proud,” he told him. “You will not receive the interpretation from Heaven, because it already exists on earth, and John Chrysostom has interpreted the verse. So humble yourself and accept it.” He was stunned. And from that time onward, he became Orthodox.

Everything has already been said. The only difference is this: since these things were written and interpreted through the Holy Spirit, a person must himself be filled with the Holy Spirit in order to accept and understand them. If he is proud and wants to grasp certain things through his own wisdom and knowledge, darkness descends upon him and a veil covers him. The eyes of his soul will have scales upon them, as Paul’s eyes did when he could not see. This is why most people became heretics: in their pride, they tried to solve things in their own way. Take the Protestant world as an example.

Today it is broken into pieces. There are four hundred varieties of Protestantism in America and Canada—four hundred varieties. Which one of you, then, possesses the truth? Are there four hundred kinds of truth? How many truths are there? From this, a person can understand what may happen. And I will not even speak of another group whose members claim to possess the truth, yet have split into two, three, four, or five factions. Where is the truth? If it is the truth, then the truth is one. You must belong to this group; otherwise, you must belong to that group, if the truth is there and not here—or perhaps to the other one. Where, finally, is the truth? Do you understand? It is exceedingly dangerous when humility is absent. And remember what Peter says in the final chapter of his Second Epistle:

“Our brother Paul,” he says, “has written many things that are difficult to understand, which certain people take and interpret to their own destruction.” Many people take the Gospel and cut it down to their own measure. They do not reshape themselves according to the Gospel; they trim and alter the Gospel to make it fit themselves. They take whatever they want, however they want, in order to justify themselves. The Gospel is plain and unadorned, and when there is simplicity of heart, the truth can be understood by everyone. And if a person, being human, lacks the virtue needed to understand it at once, he asks someone else. If that answer does not satisfy him, he asks another. And if that answer still does not satisfy him, he asks yet another. And when God sees that you truly need this matter to be resolved

and no one can satisfy you, then He Himself will answer you miraculously, provided that you need the answer. If you do not need it, He does not answer. These things I am telling you are subtle. Sometimes I speak from personal experience, and some people respond, “Panagopoulos is proud. Such things should not be said seriously; they should not be said at all.” Ah, then why did Paul speak of the many revelations he had received? Did he speak as a heretic, as a proud man, or as a fool? Why did he speak of them? He spoke for the edification of others. I said something the other day, and it was carried away on the wings of the wind, because among the audience there are also people who play a harmful role, to their own detriment.

They seize isolated words and pick them apart in a Protestant manner, without considering the whole context: why something was said, whether it needed to be said, and whether what was said was edifying. I risk being regarded as proud, both before you and before God, in order to edify you. That is something counted in my favor, not against me. And yet I shall now tell you of another revelation, to show you how God acts in difficult matters—how God acts miraculously. I had a friend who, sadly, took his own life. I had tried to help set him on the right path. He held left-wing views, believed nothing, accepted nothing, shut everything out, and could see nothing.

In any event, I once pressed him hard, and outside the post office here he turned to me and said, using a rather coarse form of address, “How could I possibly believe in this Christ of yours, in this God of yours, when you say that the so-called Prophet Elijah—a murderer who slaughtered four hundred and fifty men with his own hand—is a Saint? How could I believe such things and venerate such a man?” Panagopoulos was stunned.

“There must be some explanation for that too, Christos,” I said—for that was the late man’s name. “There must be some explanation.” “What explanation could there possibly be?” he replied. And because I had no answer, he said, “I do not accept it.” The question remained within me as an unresolved burden, because I ought to have been able to say a few words to him, whether he accepted them or not. I kept it in my file of unresolved matters. Whenever I thought I had met someone experienced and deeply knowledgeable in Scripture, I asked him. Allow me to tell you that I must have asked around ten university professors, among others. Not one of them

—not one—gave me an answer. They spoke at length about irrelevant matters, things that had nothing to do with the true solution to the problem. No one gave me an answer. Years earlier, before tape recorders became available, the Prophet Elijah had deeply moved me, and I had presented his life as a whole, drawn from Scripture, in thirty-six hour-long talks. A person could spend a year speaking about the lessons given by the Prophet Elijah, this great figure of both the Old and New Testaments. Yet this question remained, and I had no solution. Once I was speaking in Ilioupoli on the eve of the feast of the Prophet Elijah, at Vespers. What was I to speak about?

What subject could be more beautiful than a figure of the Old and New Testaments—a man who will come again, a man who has now been alive for three thousand years, a figure of such importance? So I spoke, but when I reached this particular point, I passed over it somewhat cunningly and indirectly, so that I would not have to address it. At the back of the Church sat a friend of mine, the director of IKRA. As I was speaking and looking at him, I remembered that when the program known as “The Christian Corner” had staged the life of the Prophet Elijah as a charity performance, he had taken part in it. So I thought, “When I finish, I shall call out to him: ‘George, come here

and tell me how you justify this: that one man slaughtered so many with his own hand and called down fire; that on several occasions he burned groups of fifty men together with their captains, and so forth; and that at the same time we venerate him as a Saint. How can this be, since God had said, “You shall not murder”? God gave the commandment “You shall not murder” fifteen hundred years before Christ. Elijah lived a thousand years before Christ, so he should have known it. How, then, could he kill, while God and the Church regard him as a Saint?’” So I called him over. “May I ask you something?” I said, and I explained the problem to him. “When ‘The Christian Corner’ performed the work about the Prophet Elijah, you took part. Do you remember anything? How did you justify this?” He replied, “That matter was not discussed. Other aspects of the Prophet Elijah were discussed, but not this one.”

Another disappointment. No answer at all. So I set off for home on foot, and arrived deep in thought. My wife was ill in bed with a fever. We did not yet have Nektarios. As soon as I entered, I greeted her and asked how she was, whether she still had a fever, and so forth. “What happened? What is wrong?” she asked. She could read on my face that something was troubling me, and she thought perhaps I had fallen out with someone or something of that sort. “Nothing,” I said. I set down the Old Testament I had with me, then went across to cut some watermelon and put something together to eat. I sat beside her bed while I ate. But inwardly something was boring into me, and however much I tried to hide it, from time to time my face grew gloomy. “Tell me what is troubling you,” she said. “Nothing is wrong.” “That is impossible,” she replied.

“Something is troubling you. It is boring into you.” I knew that although she believed, she had no familiarity with Scripture, so I thought that any time and words spent explaining what troubled me would be wasted. “It is nothing,” I said. But she persisted. “Even if I tell you, you will not be able to help me with this matter.” I was thinking of how many people I had met. I even remembered the late university professor, Andreas Papageorgakopoulos, with whom I had once spoken for a long time one evening. He had told me absurdities. Everything he said was absurd and had no relation to the truth. In any event, it must have taken her a quarter of an hour, perhaps even twenty minutes, to persuade me to tell her what the matter was. Finally, I said, “This and this and this is what happened.” I am telling you this to show you how God acts when there is a real need. For of course we are not alone; He is with us.

He sees what is occupying each person’s heart. When I had told her, she asked, “Where does it say that?” “In the Books of Kingdoms,” I replied, “in the Old Testament.” “Bring it here,” she said. “Why should I bring it to you? What will you do with it?” I have three or four editions of the Old Testament. I have the Septuagint; I have another edition with references to the Septuagint; and I have the edition of the Bible Society, so that I can compare the differences, and so forth, because I need them all. “Bring it here,” she said, “and bring me the edition with explanations.” So I took it, went over to her, sat down beside her, and found the relevant passage under discussion. This edition of Scripture has cross-references in the margin, directing each incident to the passages that explain and justify it.

I came to the passage about the slaughter and all that. She said to me, “What does this number here say?” It was remarkable, because she had never occupied herself with such things. There was a little number six in the margin. “What cross-reference does it give there? Look over there,” she said. “Deuter—,” it said. It meant Deuteronomy. My eyes were opened, and at once I stood up and said, “Glory to God.” I began leafing through Deuteronomy, and there I found that anyone who leads people to foreign gods is to be stoned and put to death. Elijah, in the extremity of his zeal, slaughtered all those prophets of Baal with his own hand, because they still did not believe even after the miracle he had shown them. He was applying the Law. It is true that God had said,

“You shall not murder” in the Law, but He had also given Deuteronomy. He had set out the finer details of the Law and commanded death in this particular case. The question was resolved. That was the truth. Everything else people had been saying was mere storytelling. Scripture interpreted Scripture. But I did not know the details and had not noticed that passage. That was all. I had regarded it as a mountain, as a great problem, and so on. Yet it was no problem at all. It had already been stated in Holy Scripture. Many people raise such questions with us, and we are ignorant because we have not studied. Nor have we read the Fathers, whom the Holy Spirit illumined and guided to interpret the Scriptures correctly, so that most of our questions might be resolved. Not all of them will ever be resolved. You would have to be God

to hold all of Holy Scripture within your nous, your spiritual intellect. From Genesis to the Apocalypse, all sixty-seven books—how could a human being retain them all, especially when they were written through the Holy Spirit? Besides, not everything is necessary for every one of us. One thing may be necessary for me and another for someone else. And this cooperation—this method used by my wife, who is listening out there—gave me the answer: the correct answer, the scriptural answer. And so I can explain that the Prophet Elijah was applying the Law of God. When a person carries out His Law, even if it runs contrary to human reasoning, that is what is right. Besides, if this had not been divine—if it had not come from God—could one man have taken on four hundred and fifty? Where would he have brought all those stones from afar? They had neither weapons nor cannons.

For one man to line them up like chickens and slaughter them means that divine power covered him at that moment and gave him the strength to remove them, because souls were being lost—souls were being lost. The Law forbade murder, but permitted killing when souls were being lost because of certain people. And after Elijah had given them that test, which you remember, the people believed and said, “He is God—the God of Elijah.” The others believed nothing; they had no answer. And afterward Jezebel began her persecution. So I say that these are beautiful and beneficial things. A person would always be consoled; he would have no unanswered questions, and he would not go astray and do things that will condemn him tomorrow, while unfortunately interpreting everything in his own way.

If he knew Holy Scripture, then whenever he wanted to say, “I will do this; I will kill my child,” he would ask, “What does God say?” “I will avoid having children”—what does God say? “I will not fast today; I will abolish the fast”—what does God say? “I will steal because that is how things are today. I will lie because that is how things are”—what does God say? For however much we may try to justify these things and make them conform to our own mentality and reasoning, all those excuses will remain here. As I told you one evening, a person will not be judged according to his own righteousness or his own standard, but according to God’s righteousness. And you remember the hand and the words “Mene, Tekel, Peres,” which we discussed from the Prophet Daniel. God wrote: “You have been weighed and found wanting; you have been measured and found wanting.”

“Tonight your kingdom is divided, and Darius the Persian will enter Babylon.” And that is what happened, because God measures according to His own measure and weighs according to His own standard. When God does not agree, whatever a person may do, he will accomplish nothing. For one day his file too will be closed; he will be wrapped up together with it and sent before Christ to be judged. Neither his mother-in-law nor his daughter-in-law, neither his girlfriend nor Michael nor any friend will accompany him. No one’s opinion will be requested. Yet we do certain things that work against both our temporal and our eternal good, because we have never been willing to take into our hands this prescription that guides us.

The Law of God is the light upon my path; it is a light and a guide for a person’s feet. With it he cannot stumble, and he cannot fall into a pit, as they say. If you remember, we gave many arguments in support of this point—many arguments. And we had come to the subject of bearing children, something fundamental to human life. By avoiding the bearing of children, a person refuses partnership with God: “I do not want this partnership.” What does that mean? God made the human person His partner in the increase of humanity. Angels do not bear children; human beings do. Angels do not multiply.

Human beings multiply. God gave them this blessing: to be His partners, to bring human beings into the world—upright human beings and, if possible, saints who will live in eternity. This is a great thing, a very great thing. If I could reveal to you—though perhaps you would be scandalized—some of God’s acts toward certain mothers of people wholly dedicated to Him, you would say, “Can these things really be true?” Yes, they are true. A special place belongs to every mother who has brought children into the world, and above all to those who cared that their children should live according to Christ, as far as possible, and who spoke to them not only about

this world, but also about the world to come; parents who equipped and educated them not only according to the world, but also according to God. These are the parents who cared not merely to beget children, but also to nurture them—not only at the breast, but above all in the spirit.

A child is not an object or an ornament. A child is a person. A child is not only a body, but above all a spirit. And that spirit is the breath of God and is given from above. This is a profound subject. If you wish, read the first chapter of Zechariah in the Old Testament and see what this matter means and how the soul comes into being.

Read the opening verses. This is God’s commandment and God’s Law. That is why Ecclesiastes says that the body will return to the earth, while the spirit will return to God who gave it; it will give an account before God and remain for eternity. Because we do not know these things—what a commandment and what grace God has given us in making us His partners—we neither accept Him nor listen to Him. Has anyone ever considered the place of Anthusa, who was widowed at the age of eighteen, devoted herself to that child, and gave John Chrysostom not only to the Church and to eternity, but also to humanity? For John Chrysostom was not good only for the Church. He also served society and humanity as a whole.

Have you ever considered the place of Emmelia, who gave seven saints from a single household? Have you never thought of it? Or the place of Nonna, or of the mother of Saint Augustine? Where are those mothers now? Are they simply wrapped somewhere in sin, cast aside with their flesh and their companions? They are not. No, great honor is theirs. But unfortunately, because we do not know, have not studied deeply, and have not been willing, we do what we should not do—things that are shameful here and harmful in the world to come. The Apostle Paul, writing to Timothy...

In his First Epistle, chapter 2, verse 14, he says: “And Adam was not deceived.” Adam was not deceived. “But the woman, being deceived, fell into transgression.” The woman was deceived and led Adam astray. What, then, will become of the woman who was deceived, led Adam astray, caused all this harm, drew Adam with her, and even crucified the new Adam? What will become of her? “Nevertheless she will be saved through childbearing.” Go on, then, and try to evade it. Find some other way of your own by which you will be saved, some other passage through which you can pass. If you avoid this one, you will not pass through anywhere. It is a particular opening through which a person passes into eternity.

Let me give you a vivid image. Consider the iconostasis of the Church. In the center are what we call the Beautiful Gates. There are also two other doors, the northern and the southern, where two archangels stand holding swords. A person wants to pass within, where the Kingdom of God is. He does not listen to Christ. He does not honor the Most Holy Theotokos. He wants nothing to do with either of them. Yet he still wants to enter, so he tries to go in by one route or another of his own choosing. The archangel stands there with his sword and tells him, “Not here; you must go through the center.” “Then I will go through the other door.” He goes there. “Not here; you must go through the center.” These doors are barred. You cannot enter through them. You must go through the middle. I once used this passage in another connection.

Our father used to serve in a very small church then, the Church of the Holy Theodores, and we would gather near the front. I was a little boy, five or six years old—I do not know exactly; my father died when I was nine—and I would stand before the archangel at the northern door. The archangel looked fierce, with a sword in his hand, and a kontakion with certain words had been written there. Because I saw and read those words every day, they remained in my head and are still there to this day. And what do you think those words beside the Archangel said? They said:

“Robbers, thieves, adulterers, and fornicators, tremble and quake before the sword, for it swiftly cuts off the heads of those who do not hold the right faith.”

I saw and read those words, “but I did not understand,” as Daniel so beautifully says. Today, however, I see their meaning: “What are you waiting for? The sword.” Go through the middle and settle matters there; speak there, and ask the Lady to intercede with the Lord if you wish to be saved. You will not pass through here. The doors will be barred. Shall I give you another image? Read the twenty-second chapter of Matthew, where the great wedding banquet took place and many were invited. When the crowd had entered the wedding hall of joy, the king went to one of the tables, took hold of a man, and said to him, “Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?” The man, it says, was speechless.

Then came the command to the servants: “Take him, bind him, and cast him out, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” In other words, even if you manage to enter Paradise by your own way, the examination will cast you out; Christ will cast you out. Yet we arrange everything according to our own way. We ask no one for counsel, or if we do, we ask someone who will defend our weaknesses because he shares the same condition. It turns out that many of us—especially many women in this matter—seek a spiritual father who will excuse these things. And they teach others, “Go to him, and he will let you receive Holy Communion.” He will let you, do you understand? But God is watching from above.

Cunningly, we seek lenient spiritual fathers who will forgive everything for us. But how will you get around this? Shall we tear this passage out, remove it, and say it means nothing? In the same Epistle, chapter 5, verse 14, the Apostle writes about widows who may enter a second marriage without hindrance if they cannot exercise self-restraint. If they can exercise self-restraint, let them remain as they are. But if they cannot and are in danger of falling into sin, then let them marry. Yet they must enter it with full awareness and responsibility, and bearing children is part of that responsibility. Yes, you will enjoy its blessings, but you will also pay the cost. No enjoyment is exempt from its price.

You will pay. There he says: “Therefore I desire that the younger widows marry, bear children, manage the household, and give the adversary no opportunity for reproach.” Do you wish to marry? Then you will bear children and be the mistress of your own household, so that you give no one any occasion to speak against you. Yet we even see marriages in which there is no possibility of bearing children. They know beforehand that there will be none, because the woman is no longer capable and her childbearing years have passed, and still they marry.

They marry for property, for a pension, or for certain other reasons. But marriage has its own purpose. “And God blessed them” and said, “Be fruitful and multiply.” That is why the whole service of Holy Matrimony centers on the growth of the family. There are extremely few circumstances in which a person who has married can be justified in not having children. And even then, the cost is borne not by the Mystery, but by the person. When someone takes the little cup and drinks from it during the wedding service, he must understand that it is the cup of tribulations. It is not the cup of joy; it is the cup of tribulations. You will drink it to the very bottom. Tomorrow the wife may be unable to bear children; then she will carry the cross of self-restraint.

Tomorrow the husband may fall ill and be unable to father children; then he too will carry the cross of self-restraint, or else he will burn with desire in his own home. But no one considers or takes these things into account. They say, “It does not matter. God made man for woman and woman for man.” Really? So that they could kiss each other? Is that why He made them? Was that His purpose? What we said the other day, and are saying again now, deserves serious attention. A person must not only have children; he must also consider the responsibility for them and accept it, doing everything within his power. He is not God, but he must do whatever lies within his power. He must see that his children also learn the things of God. John Chrysostom expresses an opinion on this, which I will share with you: “Those who neglect their children...”

“Even if they are virtuous in every other respect”—those who do not care for their children according to God, even if they are otherwise good people—“because of this sin will suffer the ultimate punishment.” Because of this sin, because they failed to care for their children according to God, they will suffer the ultimate punishment. These are not my words; they are the words of John Chrysostom. And in the Wisdom of Sirach, chapter 7, verse 14, we read: “Do you have children?” Are they your children? Yes. “Discipline them, and bend their necks from their youth.” Modern, advanced pedagogy tells us not to interfere with children, but to let them express themselves however they wish.

Let them pick up a slipper and strike their grandmother on the head with it; she is expected to accept it as the child’s way of releasing tension. The child will write with the left hand—fine. He ruins your wall and whatever you have placed on your own wall; you are told to let the child express himself freely. These things belong to so-called advanced pedagogy, but they are not according to Christ. Scripture says that you must bend his neck. And many of us—I, at least, can say this from my own experience—were helped by the strictness of our fathers. Otherwise, I would have gone completely off the rails. I would have had no seeds at all within me that could bear fruit when I matured. It is true that youth is like the flu. You go to the doctor and he says, “It is the flu; it must run its course.” So you wait. You suffer through it, but you wait in the hope that you will recover. That is how it is.

But can a child recover if no seeds at all have been planted within him? Perhaps he used to go to Church with his grandmother, while his mother never went. Or perhaps his mother took him to receive Holy Communion but did not receive Holy Communion herself. Or she sends him to Church while she never goes. How can that work? She tells him to pray, but she does not pray herself. And there are a thousand other such examples. Some people today, unfortunately, take no interest at all in their child’s character, either according to God or according to the standards of society. Once, when I went to the school, the parents had been invited to hear about their children and ask questions. Ahead of me was a well-dressed woman, refined by worldly standards, as we used to say. When her turn came—I was standing about a yard away—each parent would speak with the teacher and leave, and then the next one would go forward.

This was her conversation with the teacher. “How are things going with little Michael, Mother?” “Not well at all, not well at all.” “Surely not! Not well at all? But you are being unfair to the child, madam. He leaves class having learned his lesson. I question him myself, and he leaves well prepared.” “Do not be so quick. I was not answering you about his schoolwork.” “Then what were you answering me about?” “About his character.” “I did not bring him here for you to shape his character. I sent him here to learn his lessons.” And the others stood there listening to a mother who did not care whether she was feeding and arming a beast rather than raising a human being. For no matter how much knowledge a person possesses, if he has not become truly human, that knowledge will benefit him nothing.

There is a fine story about an elder who had five children. One of them did whatever he pleased. He would not eat with the family, go to Church with them, or work with them; he did everything whenever he felt like it. “My child, will you ever become a human being?” But the boy did not understand. “My boy, become a human being.” Every day he clashed with his father, until one day he slammed the door in his father’s face and left. He disappeared at the age of fifteen. The father grew very old and took no interest in where the young man was or what he was doing. Once the suffering elder went to a spa town to take the healing baths. He had to cross by a small boat. On his return...

The elder had a small bag with his few belongings and left it in one place on the boat. When they reached the harbor, an inspection was carried out, and among the elder’s belongings they found a small packet of drugs. “Whose is this? Whose is it?” “It belongs to the elder.” They seized him, and the customs officer took him to the customs house. “What is this, Elder?” “I do not know, my child,” he said. Someone else, a cunning man, had placed it in the elder’s luggage, thinking that no one would inspect an old man’s belongings. They might inspect the others, but would they inspect the elder? Yet the inspection included him as well, and they seized him and took him to the customs house. “What happened, Elder?” “I do not know, my child,” he said. “How can you not know? It was here...” “I... I do not...”

“I went to take the baths, and now I am returning to my village and my home. I have nothing to do with such things. I do not know what happened.” The elder could not imagine how the packet had got there. The customs officer realized that someone else had played a trick and had placed it there to smuggle it through. Still, he began a conversation with the elder. “Tell me, where are you from? What is your name? Give me your details,” and so on. With simplicity and without agitation, the elder said, “My name is such-and-such, I come from such-and-such a place,” and so forth. “Do you have a family?” “Yes.” “How many children?” “I have five sons.” “What do your children do? Have they settled down? Has any of them attained some position in society?” He went on asking all sorts of things. The elder answered him, but he spoke only about four of the children. He said nothing about the fifth. “And the fifth?” the officer asked. “The fifth left.” “What do you mean, he left?” “I do not know where he is.” “You do not know where he is? You seem rather hard-hearted to me,” the officer said. “Why? I did not drive him away. He left.”

“As his father, did you not care enough to find out why he left home?” the officer asked. “My good man, I wanted him to become a human being, but he did not want to become one, so he left. One day he simply got up and went away.” “I do not like what I hear,” the officer said. “But let me ask you something. Suppose that this child left and succeeded wherever he went, rose in the world, and became somebody. Would you not be glad that your child had succeeded? Suppose...” The elder said nothing. “Suppose,” the officer continued, “that he became a customs officer. Suppose I am that child.” It was indeed his own son; the son had recognized the elder. “If, for example, I were that customs officer, would you not rejoice? What would you say?” “I would ask him whether he had become a human being,” the elder replied. At that, the customs officer might as well have been listening to rain falling far away and thunder rumbling in the distance; none of it mattered.

“Has he become a human being? That is what I would ask,” he said. “Whether he has become a customs officer does not concern me.” But what do we ask? Is he an engineer? Is he a lawyer? Is he a doctor? Is he a member of parliament? Is he prime minister? Is he this, that, and the other? But is he a human being? That is the question. What matters is whether a person is truly human. Many times, not only are people not truly human, but even Christians—the so-called Christians, who ought to be truly human—are not. Even outside Christianity, a person should at least be human and not possess beastly instincts. Within Christianity, above all, he ought to be not merely human but transformed beyond ordinary humanity. Yet these matters receive very little attention. Today we treat a child like an ornament; we see the child as an object.

We worry that the child might come home with a dirty school smock or a little blood on his hand. But if he tells his teacher to go to the devil, or blasphemes Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos, or does anything else of that kind, we say it is nothing: he will grow out of it, or it does not matter. What, then, will become of children if you take no interest in them? They also need the things of God. “Do you have children? Discipline them, and bend their necks from their youth.” You know, the whole Old Testament gave parents the right to put their children to death in cases where those children blasphemed the God who had created them. Read the ancient texts and see what they say. We are not saying now that we should take a stick and break their heads. But where necessary, even love must stand aside for a moment. Our feelings must stand aside. If two slaps are needed, then those slaps must be given, because they too have their purpose.

In Proverbs, chapter 13, verse 24, the wise Solomon says: “He who spares the rod”—notice how he puts sentiment aside here—“hates his son.” He hates him. “But he who loves his son disciplines him diligently.” He disciplines him diligently. John Chrysostom takes up this teaching, in a sense, and expresses it in his own words:

“Let us bring them up”—that is, the children—“in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. From their earliest years, let us give them an example by reading the Scriptures to them in their leisure,” and let us explain and justify our instruction to them from the Scriptures.

This method made a deep impression on me and helped me greatly in raising the one child God gave us through Saint Nektarios of Aegina, after seventeen years without children. “Come here. What I am telling you is not my own idea.” In a child’s eyes, the father and mother are his enemies, his first enemies, though they ought to be his first friends. But Satan exploits the child’s weakness, ignorance, and inexperience. Because we keep saying, “Do not,” and “No”—“Do not,” and “No,” again and again—while others tell him, “It does not matter,” and so forth, he regards us as his enemies. A girl’s first enemy is her mother. Her mother will tell her to come home at the proper time, not to do this, not to wear that. Her father will likewise be her first enemy, if, of course, he fulfills his duty properly.

Whatever the mother builds up, the father tears down. Whatever the father does, the mother tears down. Amid such wreckage, the child living there will never become a true human being, and woe to him. Many times, either the father or the mother may say something wrong in a moment of anger. The other parent should not correct it in front of the child. Leave it for later, and then discuss it privately: “You should not have said that to the child. This is how the matter really stands.” In this way the child is not undermined, and there is a gentle way to set things right again. This is an art, a great art. Unfortunately, many try to correct their children while they themselves are angry. When you are angry, do not speak. Do not try to settle matters while your temper is raised. Let things grow calm and let Satan move out of the way; the right opportunity will come. “What you said then, little George—what you said...”

“What you said then was not right. I said nothing at the time because I saw that you were upset. But this is how matters truly stand.” Correction and discipline must also be given at the proper time. They must never be given in the heat of anger. I remember an elder who once stopped his nephew as the young man was rushing off in a rage. “Mud needs to dry a little before you can brush it away,” he told him. “If you go while the mud is still wet, you will only smear it and make things worse. Do not go tonight.” He turned him around, as we say, and the young man did not go. “Leave it until tomorrow. Go tomorrow; you are not entirely in the right.”

What happened? The next morning, the other man realized that his own wife had been at fault and set out to meet the young man and apologize on her behalf. He said to him, “I was on my way to your house. I need to speak with you.” “What do you want?” “My wife behaved badly yesterday. Your wife was right, and perhaps my wife caused her pain, so I ask your forgiveness.” That was the fruit of the elder’s advice.

Regarding children, Saint Paul says in Ephesians 6:4: “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Do not make them angry. Leave the child alone for the moment; the devil is also troubling him, and he does not know how to defend himself. The devil troubles him not only to harm the child, but also to bring you down. Has this never happened to you? It has happened to me. Sometimes you dread your child returning home at midday because you know that he will bring the devil’s influence with him, there will be an uproar in the house, and a whole situation will develop. The child lacks the experience to resist and drive the devil away, so the devil will use him against you. And if you do not have the strength or the self-control to keep these things in check, then you must not engage at that moment. For as an elder once told me...

Some of the gentlemen here may remember him. He was a very discerning priest and spiritual father at the Church of the Holy Unmercenaries, Father Efthymios. He used to tell me, “Dimitris, take care: when you see a quarrel coming, fly away—get up and leave. Do not throw yourself into the quarrel, Dimitris.” Do you understand? A person must be prepared, must expect the attack, and must know how to conduct himself so that he can escape and allow the tension to subside. Then, at another and more suitable time, the proper catechesis can be given and the appropriate counsel offered. When the person’s spirit is no longer under Satan’s influence, he will accept it. And what happens then? You act first, and you write...

upon the child’s heart. Then the other one—the so-called fellow with the little horns and the tail—does not find it completely blank. He has to take an eraser, rub out what is there, and try to write over what has already been written. And it is rather difficult to write over something already written. We must make sure that what is right has first been written upon the child’s heart. And this is a task that will be carried out not by the godmother, not by the uncle, not by the teacher or the catechist. Above all, it must be done at home. For whatever children may receive outside the home—in the Church, in catechism class, at school, or wherever—if it is erased at home by the parents’ indifference, nothing comes of it. But if they are properly nurtured at home, then whoever may later try to influence them

will not influence them completely. He may diminish the benefit and reduce the fruit it bears, but he will not wipe it out. For seeds have been planted within them, and one day those seeds will spring up. It is like the teeth: a strong tooth grows from within and pushes another one out. That is how it is. But those seeds must already be there within the child.

In Matthew 5:28, it says that every deviation is forbidden to the Christian, even one committed in the nous, the spiritual intellect. The cultivation must go deep. A Christian must not go astray; he must not make mistakes. He must not constantly find himself saying, “Forgive me, my God,” or, “Forgive me, my fellow man.” He must be careful and weigh things properly. Yet he does not do this, and so he loses these opportunities. And one more thing—I will finish, because our time is running out—is what is happening today: it has become the rule, at least outwardly, to turn women into men and men into women. If people knew Holy Scripture, the man would not be made into the woman today, nor the woman into the man, even outwardly through their clothing. This would not have happened unnoticed; long before our own time, the matter had already been addressed.

Many years before Christ, God had already taken a position on this matter and said: “A woman shall not wear a man’s apparel, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God”—Deuteronomy 22:5. This was established even then.

And yet mothers turn their girls into boys. “She is cold,” they say. Does anyone catch cold through the legs? I have never seen a doctor listen to someone’s legs with a stethoscope. Doctors listen to the lungs. Neither have you.

κανένας δεν μου έδωσε απάντηση. Μου μίλησαν περί ανέμων και υδάτων, θέματα έξω από τη σωστή λύση του προβλήματος. Κανένας δεν μου έδωσε απάντηση. Εγώ παλαιότερα, πριν βγουν τα μαγνητόφωνα, ο προφήτης Ηλίας με είχε συγκινήσει και είχα κάνει τον βίο, γενικά τη ζωή του από τη Γραφή, σε τριάντα έξι ωριαίες ομιλίες του προφήτη Ηλία. Έναν χρόνο θέλει ο άνθρωπος να μιλάει για τα διδάγματα από τον Προφήτη Ηλία, το μεγάλο αυτό πρόσωπο της Παλαιάς και της Καινής Διαθήκης. Τότε λοιπόν, ερωτηματικό αυτό, λύση δεν είχα. Κάποτε ομιλούσα στην Ηλιούπολη και ήταν παραμονή του Προφήτου Ηλιού. Ο Εσπερινός. Τι να μιλήσω;
