Summary
Orthodox Christians must study Holy Scripture seriously so they can understand their faith, answer others, and resist heretical teachings. Fasting is presented not as a human invention but as a divine command first given to Adam and confirmed by Nineveh’s repentance and deliverance. Parents should form children in fasting, prayer, and Orthodox faith from an early age so these spiritual foundations can guide their eventual return to Christ.

Tonight’s talk is a continuation of our last one—that is, of last Sunday’s talk, as we might say. Those of you who were with us last Sunday will remember that we spoke about the value of Holy Scripture, which, unfortunately, we Orthodox Christians neither use nor know. As we said, we may have a beautifully decorated copy in our home, but we do not use it. That is why we ourselves are left with questions, and why we are unable to answer other people, though we have a duty to do so—often our children, our relatives, or others around us who, because we are religious, expect to receive from us a responsible opinion on certain matters. Some people often appear as though they were
in a foreign land, as though they had never encountered Christianity or come across ideas and questions that have a firm foundation either in Holy Scripture, in Tradition, or in the hymnology of our Church. For we do not have only one Scripture, the same one the Protestants and the Jacobites have; we also have two other sources that are like Scripture to us. We have the theology of our Fathers, because they too interpreted by the Holy Spirit, and their interpretation was received through the Councils. We also have the hymnology of our Church, which is wholly dogmatic. Holy Scripture, of course, is primary: it is like the two denarii given to the innkeeper so that he might care for the salvation and healing of the man who fell among thieves. Yet from this...
there also comes another body of teaching, founded upon Holy Scripture and presented through the Fathers, through the Councils—where the Holy Spirit was also at work—and through the hymnology of the Church. If people, for example, knew the Parakletike, one of the books of our Church, alongside the Triodion, the Pentecostarion, and the other service books, they would know almost the whole of our doctrine. They would understand how these matters stand from the dogmatic point of view. Yet, as I say, some who possess these books use them merely to decorate their shelves. We have never opened them, nor have we asked anyone who knows more than we do about the subjects contained in them. For this very reason we remain blind, and today the various heretics come before us
speaking their own teachings, while we are unable to answer them; and some of the weaker among us are led astray toward them. I told you the other day, and I tell you again now: begin slowly, from nothing, from the very alphabet, and read Holy Scripture. You will be benefited. Today both the New Testament and the Old Testament are available with accessible explanations. A person can find many things there. Regarding the Old Testament, the best work is by Father Joel Giannakopoulos. It is a study grounded in Scripture, in the Fathers, and in scholarship. There you will find many passages from the Fathers that strengthen you. They are the aroma, the seasoning, as we might say—the rich paste used in a woman’s cooking that makes the dish come out splendidly.
Regarding the New Testament, besides the commentaries by Mr Trembelas, Sotir, and Mr Kolitsaras, there is another commentary on the four Gospels by Theophylact of Ohrid, which has been republished. The four Gospels are available in a single volume. As for the fourteen epistles of Paul and the seven catholic epistles, there is another work by Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite, available in four volumes. You may say to me, “That costs a great deal of money.” But these books are for a whole lifetime, for as long as the world endures. They will be for you, for your children, your grandchildren, your great-grandchildren—for generation after generation. These things do not change. They never go out of fashion. You cannot say, “They will go out of fashion, so what shall I do with them?” These are essential works that should be found in every home and in everyone’s library.
If anyone ever turns to them, he will be benefited. Yet they remain foreign to us. Some people own the New Testament, but they take it and interpret it for themselves, and so each becomes a little Protestant. They simply add an interpretation according to their own way of thinking. But that is not true interpretation. If you read how the Fathers interpret it, you will discover that we have done nothing and know nothing. Let us continue with the New Testament. In truth, we do not read it systematically; it is not part of our schedule. We make many schedules and change many schedules. We systematically read every kind of book—novels, sentimental works, scientific books—but very few people read with passion and determination to learn what God is saying to us through Holy Scripture. I, who am speaking to you at this moment, have not read the whole of Holy Scripture from Genesis to the Apocalypse.
There are still chapters I have not read, even though I have been speaking publicly for thirty years. Perhaps that seems strange to you. Of course, when necessary, I gather the passages I need to support my subject. That is true, and perhaps I know something about those passages. But I have not gone through all of Holy Scripture systematically, with a burning desire to see what it says here and what it says there. I know only one man who told me that he had read the New Testament three hundred times. Three hundred times! And you know, these are the only books that never grow old and never become tiresome. Every day they are fresh, and you discover new things. Sometimes you are astonished and say, “But I had read this so many times, and I had never noticed that.” This is because the Holy Spirit, by whom it was written, reveals its meaning to each person according to his perseverance, humility, receptiveness, and virtue.
In any case, let that serve as a prologue and a link with our previous talk. Last time, if you remember, we presented questions people have which should never have remained questions: Who made us? How did He make us? Why did man fall? Who brought Satan into the matter? Who is at fault? Is God at fault or not? And a thousand and one other things.
What is man’s final destination? Who made him? Who brought about death? Where will he go after death? Is there life after death? We raised these and many other questions and showed that there is evidence for their answers, at least in Holy Scripture. If we say that we are Christians and believe in Holy Scripture, then this fact alone is enough: it has answered where we shall go and who has come from there. These are immense questions, and their answers are all contained in the Scriptures. But we have never taken them up and read them so that we might know.
Indeed, the question, “Who has gone there, and who has come from there to tell us whether there is life?” is constantly repeated to us by everyone. Even Christians who have advanced in the faith still carry this question within themselves. They have not settled the matter: that life exists, that the soul is not destroyed or lost, that it continues to exist, and that we shall return again. Some doubt remains within them. When a person wavers over such fundamental matters of faith, what can you expect him to do about everything that follows? What then becomes of morality? Why do you leave as an open question, as something still under discussion, the fundamental truth for which Christ came into the world? Look, He gives us testimony. Christ Himself bears witness when He says, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. I am not the God of the dead, but of the living.” And beyond that
He tells us that whoever believes in Him has eternal life, does not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. What more do you want Him to tell you? In what other way did you expect Him to say these things? Was He not there? Did He not come here, then return there, where He now awaits us? Has He not become our forerunner? And do we doubt even this? Then what do we believe? What do we believe? A person who doubts this is therefore an unbeliever. I do not know what else such a person could be, because the evidence is there. Secondly, did He not unveil for us, through the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, that there is life beyond the grave? Did He not show us that there is both a wretched life and a blessed life there? “You are in anguish, while he is comforted.” We shall discuss this as well. For whose sake did He say it? Did He not tell us what we are going to face and how matters stand beyond the grave? Did He not speak to us of eternal Hell? “And these will go away into eternal punishment.” The other life is eternal as well. Was He mistaken when He said this? Did He not say it?
Are these things not real? Has He not spoken to us about the Judgment foretold from the foundation of the world? Did He not reveal through Enoch, the seventh from Adam, and prophesy how the Judgment would take place? Does He not speak to us through Daniel about how the Judgment will take place? Does He not speak to us in the Apocalypse—did He not give us the Apocalypse—about how the Judgment will take place? These are three scenes from three widely separated eras, and all three speak of one and the same event. “Behold,” it says in the Epistle of Jude, “behold.” “Thrones were set in place,” says the Prophet Daniel. “The thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took His seat.” And John says that he saw, in the twentieth chapter of the Apocalypse—and indeed he went even further—a new heaven and a new earth, and the sea was no more. He saw the new heaven and the new earth in which we human beings shall dwell.
Do we doubt these things? Then what do we believe? Truly, what do we believe in? Do you want to be a student, to hold the books in your hands, and yet neither read nor consult them in order to learn as you should? Perhaps you will say, “I have reasons not to trust these books.” Very well, do not trust human books; do not attach so much importance to them. But do the divine books have any reason to deceive you? If you have doubts and questions even about them, then where are we going? We have nothing left. This is why people have so many questions: because “they go astray, not knowing the Scriptures,” as our Lord said. And He says precisely, “not knowing the Scriptures”—the Scriptures. Some things are difficult, as Peter says concerning Paul’s writings.
“Our beloved brother Paul wrote certain things that are difficult to understand,” and some people twist them to their own destruction. Yet he did not write them so that people might be destroyed. If they humble themselves and seek their interpretation through the mind of the Fathers, they will receive the answer. They will become neither unbelievers nor heretics, but faithful and sound Christians. For I want you to know that the same Holy Spirit who wrote the Scriptures, who illumined the Apostles and brought these things to their remembrance so that they might write the Scriptures, interprets the Scriptures through the Fathers. That is why the most authoritative interpretation is the patristic interpretation. Today, as you know, God has illumined people so that the patristic texts are available in accessible translation. Today there are editions of these texts
published by the Apostoliki Diakonia, a series which, after many years, has now reached about eighty volumes—the complete Patrologia contains 151 volumes—and presents the original text together with a translation. Others too, both in Thessaloniki and here, including Paterdiotis and his associates, are republishing patristic texts with a corresponding interpretation, so that everyone today can understand in his own language what previously would have seemed foreign to many. Of course, a person cannot buy them all at once, but he can put aside two hundred drachmas each month and purchase one volume. In one, two, or three years, he will be able to build a substantial patristic library. He himself will be benefited, and all his questions will be resolved.
He will also be able to help other people. Following these arguments and questions, there is another question I would like to bring to your attention tonight, especially since we are living through this fasting season: the question of fasting and whether fasting is given by God. Is it a human invention? Should fasting be observed as the Church presents it, or should it not? Indeed, someone once wrote to me in a note: “I do everything,” he said, “but I think fasting is worthless.” Some time ago I had the opportunity to write a book entitled Fasting: A Commandment of God. Fasting is not a human invention. We
search and search for excuses because we want to indulge our bellies. That is the reason. If a doctor puts us on a diet, we will observe it with religious devotion. What is a diet? Is it not a fast? It is abstinence from certain foods, and often from many foods. If only we understood that we might never need to reach the point where a doctor puts us on a medical diet, provided we observed the fasts established by the Church. You know, if twice a week, on Wednesday and Friday, a person ate fruit, what a healthy constitution he would have! He would allow the pancreas to rest and work only with the fructose. What a great benefit that would be! Yet we do not want it.
For these forty days, we could set aside rich foods—meat, butter, eggs, cheese, milk, and these other animal products—as the fast requires during the forty-day period we are now passing through. What rest this would give the body! What a great benefit it would be, with simpler meals—foods cooked with oil, and fish, which is light nourishment and which we encounter so many times in the Gospel. Yet we do not do it; we resist. “But I need these foods,” someone says. If you truly need them, that is a different matter. You are not obliged to abstain; indeed, you must eat what your health requires. But many of us have no such need and do the exact opposite, to the detriment of our health. Thus we are not in a good state with the Church—that is, in our souls—and we are not in good health either. Yet if the doctor tells us to stop eating something, we stop. If Christ tells us, we do not. Christ
apparently no longer has any authority; in this matter, He is powerless. And yet, my beloved, fasting, which the Church presents to us in various forms throughout the year, has its foundation in the very beginning, when only two human beings existed in the world. From the time there were two people in the world, fasting has existed. Fasting was given by God; human beings did not invent it. Man never makes laws against his own belly in order to nourish other things. He always indulges his belly, apart from a few people of strict resolve who manage to master it. The rest of us are always indulgent toward our bellies. Saint Basil the Great says that fasting was instituted in Paradise. Adam received the first commandment: “From the tree,” He says,
“of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat.” The words “you shall not eat” were the institution of fasting. God told him to abstain; He told him to fast from one tree. He could eat from all the others, but from this one tree He told him to abstain. Through his belly Adam and Eve were driven out of Paradise, because Adam did not fast from the tree from which God had commanded him to fast.
Fasting has existed from that time onward. That fasting is a mighty weapon, and that people knew this through tradition, is demonstrated by Nineveh. Fasting saved Nineveh. The sentence had been pronounced: “Thus says the Lord: In three days Nineveh shall be destroyed.” What did the king of Nineveh command? What did he prescribe? Fasting—not only for adults and children; even the little children ate nothing. The animals too were made to fast, with neither food nor water. “Who knows,” he said, “whether God may relent?” And God did relent, and He did not destroy Nineveh. How did they know that fasting was such a great virtue and possessed such tremendous power?
When fasting is put to use, it is like using not an atomic bomb, but a hydrogen bomb. Such is the power of fasting. Let a three-day fast be proclaimed, and you will see what becomes of illicit couples. You will see what becomes of the beds of fornicators and adulterers. You will see what becomes of the discotheques, nightclubs, and the rest. They will all fall apart. They cannot withstand fasting. All these worms of fornication, adultery, and corruption feed and thrive when there is food to spare. “They grew fat.” Job says that human flesh is like mire, like mud. The more you feed it, the softer it becomes, so that the little pig can wallow in it. But when the mire dries up, the pig can no longer rest there.
A pig will not go into it. So it is with Satan within a person. Test this for yourselves, those of you who lack self-control in matters of the flesh. Keep a three-day fast and then come and see me; you will see the results. And yet this great virtue is not put to use. If a person wishes to progress spiritually and ever receive that threefold gift received by all spiritual people, he must begin with fasting: “Through fasting, vigil, and prayer, receiving heavenly gifts.” If you do not fast, you cannot keep vigil. With a full stomach, you cannot keep vigil. And if you do not fast and keep vigil, you cannot pray. Consequently, you deprive yourself of all the graces that flow from prayer.
So fasting has existed ever since there were two people in the world. And we encounter it not as we practice it today, but in particular persons and at great events, as a strict fast. If fasting were of no importance, why did Christ fast for forty days and forty nights?
Adam was driven out because of his belly; and in the very place into which Adam was driven, Christ comes and fasts, showing Adam: “Adam, if you had been watchful, you would not have been cast out. I fast to show you, and all your descendants, the way: if you wish to be saved, not to remain outside but to return within.” And so Christ fasts. Peter writes in his epistle, emphasizing: “Leaving you an example, that you should follow in His footsteps.” Christ had no need of fasting, but He showed us the path we must follow if we wish to return to Paradise.
Lack of self-control and refusal to repent were the two chief things that drove Adam and Eve out of Paradise. They did not fast, and afterward they did not repent either. When a person returns by reversing the very passions through which he fell and sets his life in order, what must he do? He must both fast and practice metanoia, repentance. Yet we do neither as we should. We do not fast; and if we do, we treat it as a burden, which God does not desire. God asks for “a cheerful giver.” He wants you to offer something—even a sacrifice of your own—upon the altar of sacrifice, but willingly. “If Christ fasted, who am I not to fast? I, the sinner, such as I am?” Yet we seek excuses
so that we need not submit ourselves to this fast. Christ, then, as I was saying, fasted for forty days and forty nights. He neither ate nor drank. If you read—though because we do not read, we do not know—you will find Christ fasting in both the fourth chapter of Matthew and the fourth chapter of Luke. Moreover, did Moses fast for forty days and forty nights, or did he not? And what was the result? What was the purpose of that fast? It prepared him to receive the Word of God on Mount Sinai, written upon tablets of stone. This is the fast that we are now keeping for forty days. We too fast and purify ourselves
so that we may receive the Word of God incarnate from the Most Holy Theotokos, the Virgin. We do not now receive Christ upon tablets; the Most Holy Theotokos gives birth to Him as man. This is what the fast is, and this is its purpose. And did the Prophet Elijah fast for forty days, or did he not? He even journeyed throughout that time. When the Prophet Elijah set out to reach Horeb, God gave him a cake of bread, angelic food, as well as water and sleep. Strengthened by that food, he walked for forty days and forty nights until he reached Mount Horeb. And you know, it is difficult to fast from water, to go without water.
Christ our God has equipped animals such as camels in such a way that they can store water within themselves, apart from their food, and endure for a month. It is a difficult thing; and wherever we encounter great fasts, we also find instances of complete abstinence from food and drink. Both today and in former times, when people fasted, they abstained even from water, or drank it only with great reluctance. You know, a person can fast from food fairly easily, but feels a great need for water. Nevertheless, if he truly desires, he constrains himself and fasts from that as well. But we pay no attention to this. We should ask how they did these things, how they fasted, and how they succeeded.
Let us pay attention to it; let us read it. In Deuteronomy he says: “Then I remained on the mountain for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water. And the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone, written by the finger of God.” What I have read to you is his own testimony; he himself recounts it. “I remained on the mountain,” Moses says, “I remained on the mountain for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water, and the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone, written by the finger of God.” He himself writes these things so that we may hear them. I do not know what you think or how you intend to act concerning this matter.
Emotionally, at least...
Christ our God and the Church have set fasting before us as a great virtue. Take care, then—each according to his strength, one a little and another more, one strictly and another with pastoral allowance—that we always fast. I remember a soul who has now fallen asleep. Because of illness, this person was permitted to eat nothing but meat. “What am I to do, Mr. Panagopoulos?” the person asked. “Day after day, I cannot abstain from it, because I would die. So I eat it without salt. At least I can fast from its pleasant taste and discipline my appetite. I can preserve my body while at least disciplining my sense of taste.” And this person added no salt, not even a little to make the meat tasty. If a person truly desires it, fasting will benefit him physically as well as spiritually.
One further matter to which I wish to draw your attention is that most of us are the children of mothers who failed us in this respect. Our mothers did not teach us to fast from childhood. Children must be taught to fast from an early age—not by force, but gradually, until they reach an appropriate measure.
Even if they do not seek fasting on their own, they should at least not crave non-fasting foods. Today, of course, children from Christian families are under attack, because when they go outside with bread and halva, the other children—the children raised on butter—will mock them. This requires greater effort, because most mothers look upon their children as objects. They do not see them as persons; they do not see the spirit within them, but only the flesh.
They keep scales and weigh them, anxious that they may not reach the proper weight. But as for what is happening to the soul and what destruction is taking place there, they take no notice. Indeed, one often hears it said lightly: “It is only a small child; what does it know?” And do you, the grown-up, know? If it is only a small child, then do not baptize it either. It did not understand—why did you baptize it? Do not give it Holy Communion either. Why do you give it Holy Communion if it does not understand? Why do you commune it? Is that how things are? No. A child must be formed from an early age. And if someone in the household must eat certain foods because of illness, the reason should be explained to the child, so that little by little the child understands why that person must eat them. Of course, when children go out into the world, most will follow their own course. Few remain faithful to the traditions of their home; the rest will make their circuit, but they will return.
I tell you beforehand: they will return. They will make their circuit, as the earth does, but these children will return. They will remember their home; they will remember their mother, their grandmother, and their father. They will remember these things. Perhaps for a time they will be swept away by the current—I do not wish it—but even if they are, they will have seeds within them, because you acted in time and wrote upon their souls. Others will then have to erase what is already written before they can write something else over it. Do not allow the devil to write his own things first—the things of the flesh, the world, and unbelief. Let what is right be written first. Then you will see success. The child will return. Perhaps your body and your physical eyes will not live to see that return, but your spirit will see it. They will certainly return, especially when they have devout and humble parents...
who pray, so that their children may be helped not only by our knowledge and our words, but also by prayer and by Christ. Then the children have stronger wings and a greater chance of returning. Therefore, take care: bring fasting into your home. It is a great virtue. Do not drive it away, Saint Basil the Great says. Do not drive it away, lest it go and accuse you before the Lawgiver, and He take your food away through poverty or illness. Many say, “The servant of God fasts because he has nothing to eat, while our refrigerator is full.” Be careful, he says. Do not drive fasting away. It may go and accuse you before the Lawgiver, who is Christ, and He may take these things away and empty your refrigerator—or send you an illness, so that you see the food from a distance but cannot eat it.
God is ingenious. He takes the screwdriver, turns things around, and arranges them so that one of your illnesses requires squash while another requires meat. Try reconciling the two! He has the power to leave you living on one little container of yogurt for the rest of your life. Go on, then—set yourself against God! If there is illness, I have no objection. Consult a discerning spiritual father, and he will tell you what to do. Do not decide for yourself. Do not abolish the Wednesday and Friday fasts on your own; do not act as an opponent of Christ. On that day God died, and you will mourn. We often honor a day set aside for our mother or father. Will you not honor the day of your God, especially when doing so is for your own good? On that day, eat something simpler. And take care, because the children are watching, and we cause them harm.
We make concessions for outsiders who come to our home on fast days. The household does not cook non-fasting food. Come another day, and I will slaughter my finest animal and set a table for you. Today this household does not cook such food. We should not say, “Mr. So-and-so or Mrs. So-and-so has come; they are guests,” and then remove Christ from the center and put people there instead. Christ too will depart: “Since you drive Me away whenever it suits you, I will leave permanently.” And then will you manage here? How will you manage? Fasting, then, is not something arbitrary. It has a purpose, yet we behave shamefully. It does not kill the body. It does not intend to send anyone to an early grave or fill neurological clinics. It kills the passions. If young people fasted, the houses of corruption would close. But because they do not fast, and indeed overfeed their bodies, these furnaces demand an outlet; and they burn both themselves and others. For the body becomes a blazing furnace.
When you try to extinguish a furnace with oil, the fire only grows stronger and produces still more flame. If you read how Patristic theology speaks about fasting, you will say, “What are we doing here? What do we know?” We know nothing.
I believe that if people understood this institution of fasting, it would not be so widely misunderstood. It would be practiced, and the benefit would be great. These are only a few words on such a vast subject, because when you speak about something that has existed for 7,500 years, you cannot cover it in fifteen minutes. In any case, there is another matter I could bring to your attention, one that you yourselves face every day—or, if not personally, you at least hear and see it around you.
Premarital relations have become almost a dogma for most people, especially for the young, for boys and girls. If a thousand couples were to come forward for Holy Matrimony today, perhaps only one or two in a thousand would be worthy of the crowns placed upon their heads. The words, “Crown them with glory and honor,” have a real meaning. Why are they crowned? Because of the struggle they have made to arrive there as virgins. And we sing, “Rejoice, O Isaiah,” and, “Dance, O Isaiah, for the Virgin...” But now the hymn would have to say, “Weep for the prostitute; weep for the adulteress; weep for the concubine.” That is how this troparion of the Church, which calls Isaiah to rejoice, would have to be altered.
Isaiah rejoiced when he saw and wrote concerning our Most Holy Theotokos: “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son.” As you know, these premarital relations do not fulfill the purpose of Holy Matrimony. What, then, do they seek? Premarital relations do not seek the begetting of children. A man and a woman do not rush to come together because they want to have children. No. They simply want pleasure. You understand where this leads; you already know it, perhaps from personal experience or from what you have learned by observing others. If people knew the truth about these matters, a very large percentage of them—what do you think?
They would approach the matter differently and govern themselves differently. Why? I was once speaking with a medical student as we were traveling toward Spata, and he told me, “God also made woman.” Certainly He made woman. He acted as the one who brings the bride to the bridegroom: He made her and brought her to Adam. That is true. But what are you trying to prove by that? I asked him, “Why did He make her? For ascesis, for ascetic discipline? Was it not for the continuation of the human race, so that people would exist and humankind would increase? What does the commandment say?”
What commandment did God give to that first couple? Did He make them and simply send them away, or did He tell them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and have dominion over the earth”? Be fruitful, multiply, and have dominion. Which of these commands are you obeying? Tell me one by one. You now want the woman whom God created, but before taking her lawfully as your wife, are you fulfilling these three purposes? Are you doing it to increase, to multiply, and to fill the world? Why are you doing it? Is this where we are going to take the argument? You told me that God made her. For what purpose did He make her? Secondly, let me ask you something: did He simply make her...
and give her to Adam, or did He do something else as well? “And He blessed them and said...” “And He blessed them and said...” The women you pursue—you do not remain with one, but go on to another and then another—are they blessed, and are these relationships fulfilling the purpose for which God created woman? God said, “Be fruitful and multiply,” but you alter His words and say, “Seek pleasure.” No. And if the woman conceives and says that she will not abort the child, then there will be consequences as well. You know these things. Even if you do not know them through personal experimentation, you have heard about them. Yet people do not understand the truth of the matter or how God created the human person.
They do not understand the law God gave the human person so that he might walk along the proper path. I shall give you three examples. The first is in Genesis, and it is the one I have already mentioned. It appears in the first chapter of Genesis, where Scripture speaks generally about the creation of the world, in verse 27: “And God made man; according to the image of God He made him.” God made the human person according to His image. “Male and female He made them”—man and woman—“and God blessed them.” I repeat: this is a blessing. “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.”
God said this when He made the first couple. Humankind multiplied, then sinned and went astray, until only one man remained righteous. God brought the flood and overwhelmed everyone except Noah’s family. Noah. And you know that eight souls were saved through the flood: Noah and his wife, Shem, Ham, and Japheth—his three sons—and their three wives, with Noah as the eighth.
They survived the flood, and once again the family stood face-to-face with God. As it is written in chapter 9, verse 1, listen to the very same words: “And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.’”
“And have dominion over it.” This is in the first verse after the flood. At first God made a covenant with the first couple. Now He makes a new covenant with eight people. A little farther on, in verse 7 of the same chapter, He says: “But as for you, be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.” “And have dominion over it.” God insists upon this. Thousands of years apart, He speaks the same words and insists upon them. How, then, can you or I alter this and say, “You know, there are many women”? There is one woman, and that woman has been given to me. If a wife is the fruit of a blessing, you are entitled to one wife; and if the first one dies...
you may take a second wife if you cannot exercise self-restraint. If you can exercise self-restraint, remain as you are. But you cannot take matters into your own hands. Many people alter the teaching here, just as that young man did. He said, “In any case, I do not go with married women, because there is the commandment, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ I go with women my own age or with other unmarried women.” “So you commit fornication?” I asked. “Yes,” he told me, “but there is no commandment against fornication. God said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; there is no commandment saying, ‘You shall not commit fornication.’” Where are we living? I asked him, “Under the Law of Moses, or under the law of grace?”
Do the Scriptures still apply today? Does only the Old Testament apply, or does the New Testament apply as well? How many denarii did the Samaritan give for the man at the inn? How many did he give? He gave two, not one. What does the New Testament say about fornication? “But the Law says, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; it does not say, ‘You shall not commit fornication.’” Do you know that there is also a second law written in Deuteronomy? Read Deuteronomy. The Law also said, “You shall not murder,” yet in Deuteronomy it commands killing in certain cases. The Prophet Elijah slew 450 men with his own hand, and another fifty, and yet he is a saint.
God has also commanded that people be put to death. He has made exceptions. Deuteronomy, then, also speaks about fornication. But I shall leave the old things aside and come to the new. Have you ever opened the Gospel to see what God says—what Paul, that mouth of God, says and has written? For when Paul speaks or writes, Christ speaks. Christ is the One who moved his soul. Listen, then, to some commandments from Holy Scripture concerning fornication. In Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians, chapter 6, verse 13, he says: “The body is not for fornication, but for the Lord.” Do not give your body over to fornication, he says, but offer it to God, to Christ...
so that it may become a temple of the Holy Spirit. In the same chapter, verse 18, he says: “Flee fornication. Flee!” He does not say, “Resist it,” or, “Fight against fornication.” He says, “Flee fornication.” Stand and fight against every other sin; but when it is a matter of the flesh, flee. You cannot trust yourself. This is why Patristic theology goes so far as to say: “You must greet everyone. You have no right to refuse a greeting, even to the person who killed your child. But you must not greet the person with whom you used to sin, or the person with whom exchanged glances may lead you into sin. Do not greet that person. Move elsewhere, go far away, close the door, hang up the telephone, and turn your back. Do not greet that person, because through the flesh...
Satan may once again take hold of me.” “Flee fornication,” he says. “Flee!” Do not resist it; flee from it. “But I have urges,” someone says. “I need an outlet.” Then seek one lawfully and morally: “Because of fornication, let each man have his own wife.” Marry. Take your own wife—or your own husband, if you are a woman. I am not depriving you of this. If you burn with desire and do not have the strength to abstain, then marry. Why wait until you are fifty, expecting a woman to bring you a dowry and provide for you, while all those years you wander about, splashing around here and there? And you, as a woman, why wait until you are forty, when you may no longer be able to give birth naturally and must undergo a Caesarean section from the outset in order to have one child? All those years you let yourself be squeezed dry like a lemon, and then...
you come to the wedding crowns and to Christ offering only the squeezed-out rind—your own body and your husband’s body. Marry at the age when the Most Holy Theotokos was betrothed, at fourteen or fifteen. From that age. Saint Ignatius says that before a man goes to prostitutes, before he seeks lovers, he should enter Holy Matrimony. When is a woman ready for marriage? God says that from the day her womanhood begins, she is ready for marriage. But we say she must first acquire wealth, obtain an apartment, buy a car, buy a color television, acquire this and acquire that—even if in the meantime we commit fornication and adultery and drag ourselves around like vagabonds. No. Marry from that age. God will demand an account, regardless of the arrangements and fantasies we have invented. Our parents lived differently. My mother-in-law married at fourteen and bore fourteen children.
My mother married at seventeen and bore thirteen children, and I do not know how many other women did the same. They lived; perhaps they lived with a little less and in somewhat humbler conditions. They did not eat as much butter and as many biscuits as we have eaten. That makes no difference. They fulfilled their calling. If people wanted to escape these sins, they could find a way. Even if they lived a restrained and modest life, they could still do so. If you wish, read the parallel example found in Daniel. The Book of Daniel is there in Holy Scripture. See how those young men—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and Daniel with the others—fasted because of their faith while they were captives. They had brought this discipline with them from their homeland; they had brought it from their homes.
Do you understand? Could those young men who fasted there possibly have gone to prostitutes or sought such outlets? Joseph the All-Comely demonstrated this even more clearly. He could have yielded to his mistress and even considered it flattering to have his master’s wife as his lover. He could have passed golden years with her, although he was a captive, and later, upon returning to his homeland, told everyone what a wonderful time he had enjoyed. But he did not do it. He did not do it. He chose to go to prison rather than yield and take his mistress as a lover, even though he could have lived what we would call golden days. We have demolished our foundations, and now we cannot stand. All these things seem like a mountain before us. We try to reduce them to human reasoning. We take pencil and paper and calculate whether to have one child or none at all...
how we will feed the child, how much education we will provide, and so forth. We do not see things as God has given them to us. And liars all around us tell us that there is no more room on the earth. Greece has been emptied. How many more people could live in Greece? Everything is deserted. This year the olives, that most precious crop, will be left hanging on the branches because there are no people to gather them. How many more people could live in Australia? How many could live in Canada? A hundred million people could live there. Yet humanity has arranged things in this way. According to the world’s ideals, there is peace, prosperity, marvelous achievements, and God’s blessing. Yet you see so many upheavals there, so much money...
and so much material comfort, while in other respects there is great unhappiness and misery within the home. People cannot remain together; they cannot understand one another. Everything is cursed, and everything is filled with bitterness. “You must abstain from fornication,” Paul writes in First Thessalonians 4:3. “God will judge fornicators and adulterers.” “Shall I then make the members of Christ members of a prostitute?” How could this be? My body, this member which belongs to Christ, has been baptized and has now become a part of Him; I belong to the Church. How, then, can I make it a member of a prostitute? And in First Corinthians 6:16 he says: “He who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her.” The person who enters into relations with a prostitute defiles his body. Elsewhere, in chapter 6, verse 9, he writes: “Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers...”
will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven.” God, then, did not give us marriage merely for pleasure. Fornication is not permitted, and adultery is punished. We shall stop here and, God willing, continue in another talk. May God be our helper.

άλλο να σου πει ότι ο πιστεύονης σε με έκανα πως θα ανησύστηκε και η σκρίψη μου και αρκετά αλλά μεταβεύεται από τους θανάτους στην ζωή μου. Τι άλλο θες να σου πει; Σαν πώς ήθελες να σου πει αυτά τα πράγματα; Δεν ήταν από εκεί, δεν ήρθε από εδώ και δεν ξαναπήγε από εκεί και μας περιμένει; Δεν έχει γίνει πρόδρομος υπέρ ημών; Και αυτό το αμφισβητούμε; Ε, τότε τι πιστεύουμε; Τι πιστεύουμε; Ο τέτοιος λοιπόν άνθρωπος, αν αμφισβητεί αυτό, είναι άπιστος. Ή δεν ξέρω εγώ τι είναι ο άνθρωπος, γιατί υπάρχουν παραδείγματα. Δεύτερον, δεν μας ξεσκέπασε διά της παραβολής του Πλουσίου και του Λαζάρου ότι υπάρχει ζωή πέραν του τάφου; Δεν μας παρουσίασε ότι υπάρχει και άσχημη ζωή και καλή ζωή; «Συ οδυνάσαι, αυτός δε παρακαλείται». Θα το συζητήσουμε κι αυτό. Για ποιον το είπε αυτό; Δεν μας είπε εμάς το τι πρόκειται να αντιμετωπίσουμε, πώς έχουν τα θέματα πέραν του τάφου; Δεν μας είπε για κόλαση αιώνια; «Και απελεύσονται ούτοι εις κόλασιν αιώνιον». Η άλλη η ζωή είναι αιώνια. Και αυτό λάθος το είπε; Δεν το έχει πει;
Από τότε είναι η νηστεία. Ότι η νηστεία είναι ένα μεγάλο όπλο και το ήξεραν οι άνθρωποι εκ παραδόσεως, αποδεικνύεται στη Νινευή. Τη Νινευή την έσωσε η νηστεία. Βγαλμένη απόφαση: «Τάδε λέγει Κύριος. Τρεις ημέρες και η Νινευή καταστραφήσεται». Τι διέταξε ο βασιλεύς στη Νινευή; Τι προέβαλε; Νηστεία. Όχι στους μεγάλους και στους μικρούς· ούτε τα μικρά δεν φάγανε. Και στα ζώα, και αυτά τα νήστεψαν. Ούτε φαγητό ούτε πότισμα. «Ποιος ξέρει», λέει, «μήπως μεταμεληθεί ο Θεός;» Και μεταμελήθη ο Θεός και δεν την κατέστρεψε τη Νινευή. Πού ξέρανε ότι η νηστεία είναι μια τόσο μεγάλη αρετή και έχει μια τέτοια μεγάλη δύναμη;
Λοιπόν, υπάρχει από τότε που υπάρχουν δύο άνθρωποι. Τη συναντούμε μάλιστα όχι όπως τη συναντούμε εμείς σήμερα· τη συναντούμε σε πρόσωπα, σε μεγάλα γεγονότα, αυστηρά νηστεία. Αν η νηστεία δεν ήταν τίποτα, ο Χριστός γιατί να νηστεύει σαράντα μέρες και σαράντα νύχτες;
Εχάρη όταν είδε και έγραψε για την Παναγία μας: «Ιδού η Παρθένος εν γαστρί έξει και τέξεται υιόν». Οι προγαμιαίες αυτές σχέσεις, όπως ξέρετε, δεν έχουν την πραγμάτωση του σκοπού του γάμου. Αλλά δηλαδή τι έχουν; Δεν έχουν την τεκνογονίαν οι προγαμιαίες σχέσεις. Δεν σπεύδει να συνέλθει με τον Α ή με τη Β αυτός ή αυτή για να σπεύσουν να κάνουν παιδιά. Όχι. Απλώς να ηδονιστούν. Και αντιλαμβάνεστε τώρα πού πηγαίνει το θέμα και το ξέρετε άλλωστε, ίσως και εκ πείρας αλλά και από άλλη γνώση απ’ έξω. Αν γνώριζε ο άνθρωπος πώς έχουν τα θέματα αυτά, ένα μεγάλο ποσοστό. Τι λέτε;
