Summary

The lecture warns that many Orthodox Christians neglect Holy Scripture and therefore remain unable to resolve spiritual questions or help others. Orthodox knowledge also includes Holy Tradition, the Church Fathers, councils, and hymnography, which together illuminate humanity’s creation, purpose, death, and promised restoration. God did not create death or the devil: death entered through the devil’s envy, while Lucifer freely abandoned his angelic calling through pride and rebellion.

By the grace of God, I wanted to say something about a failing that, unfortunately, all of us so-called Orthodox Christians share. I do not know whether you realize that we Orthodox, more than anyone else, are utterly ignorant of Holy Scripture. And many times we marvel at certain heterodox Christians who speak to us, and we say, “They know Scripture by heart.” It is true that they know it by heart, because we do not know it at all. This is one of the chief areas, among others, in which the Orthodox Christian falls short. From what I read, I see that

if an Orthodox Christian knew Holy Scripture, he would not have so many unanswered questions, and at the same time he would be a great help to others. For a person to know Scripture, he must first read it. He will not learn it in his sleep. There are people who have never even read Scripture once. And when I say this, I do not mean a single chapter or a single verse; I mean the whole of Scripture. They have not read it. They have read many other things, but they have not read Scripture. That is precisely why these Orthodox Christians have so many questions. Our Christ

was challenged by the so-called Sadducees. In His day—as you may have noticed—there were Pharisees, there were scribes, and there were also the so-called Sadducees. They did not believe in the Resurrection. But do many Orthodox Christians truly believe in the Resurrection? If we believed that we shall rise again, and that our loved ones have not died but are alive, we would not behave as we do—only to be ashamed of ourselves afterward—and so often become the reason that others lose their faith as well.

Chapter 22.

In the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 22, beginning at verse 23, we find what I have just told you. It is the conversation of our Christ with the Sadducees, prompted by a question they asked Him. Listen to what they asked Him.

“The same day,” it says, “the Sadducees, who say that there is no resurrection, came to Him”—there is no Resurrection; you die, and that is the end of you—“and they questioned Him, saying, ‘Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies without children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.’”

If a man died without having children, his brother was obliged to take the widow as his wife, so that a child might be born into that family, as we would say. “Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother. The same happened with the second and the third, down to the seventh.” They all died without leaving offspring. “Last of all, the woman also died. Therefore, in the resurrection”—which You speak about, for our Christ spoke of the Resurrection—“whose wife will she be of the seven?” Who will have her as his wife, they ask, if there is life beyond the grave? Whose wife will she be? This question belongs not only to the Sadducees, but also to Orthodox Christians who are unread and have never studied Scripture.

Indeed, they regard it as a real problem. “For they all had her.” Jesus answered, “You are mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures.” In other words, Scripture tells us what things are like beyond the grave. If you read the Scriptures—if you would only condescend to read them—you would not have this question. It would already have been answered. And our Christ continues: “You are mistaken, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.” You do not even know the power of God or what God is going to do. “For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage.” There are no married couples in the Resurrection, He says, after the Resurrection.

“But they are like the angels of God in heaven.” The angels are beyond the distinction of male and female. There is no longer any procreation. That is how it will be after the Resurrection, He says. “But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” And when the crowds heard this, they were astonished at His teaching. They offered no objection. It was all written there, yet for them it was shrouded in deep darkness, just as it is for us. And why do we have no sound understanding of these matters? Why do we go astray?

We do not study the Scriptures. We do not open them to see what Christ has said, to whom He has spoken, and what He has done for us. And yet it is a commandment from God that a person should read Scripture every day. For example, in the book of Joshua son of Nun, the successor of Moses, when you open to the first chapter, verse 8, do you know what it says? Let me render it for you: “This book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth”—it must never be far from you—“but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may know how to do everything written in it.” You must learn it, know it, and do everything that is written—not merely whatever you choose, O man. “Then you shall prosper, and He will make your ways prosperous, and

then you shall have understanding.” Then you will do well; then things will go well for you; then you will prosper and understand what it is all about. Yet this is the one book that lies neglected, as we were saying. Many people, of course, have it in their homes, but they do not know where they have put it, where it begins, or what is written inside it. We simply do not know it. And in the Wisdom of Sirach, chapter 6, verse 37, we find this: “Set your mind upon the ordinances of the Lord, and meditate continually on His commandments.” A person may learn everything, know everything, and master everything; but he has achieved nothing if he does not learn what God has written for him to do in this world, so that he may be with Him

in that world.

Why must Scripture be read? The answer is: because “all Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” This is what the Apostle Paul writes to Timothy in his Second Epistle, chapter 3, verse 16. John Chrysostom says that we often hold a photograph in our hands, and it moves us; it brings someone back to our memory and often teaches us something. Yet although we hold the Scriptures in our hands, he says, they mean nothing to us; they do not move us or speak to us. Listen to how he expresses it in his own words:

“When someone sets before himself the lifeless image of a child, a friend, or a relative”—he holds in his hand an image of his own child, and he feels that the departed person is there. If the person has died, he feels as though he were standing before him; he sees him. Or if the person is far away, he still has him before his eyes, sees him, remembers him, and feels as if he were beside him. Through that lifeless image, he pictures the absent person, thinks of him, and carries him within himself. “How much more, through their writings, may we enjoy the presence of the saints, possessing not images of their bodies, but images of their souls.” When we read the Apostles, the Holy Fathers, and the hymnographers in general, he says, we are reading their souls; their souls stand before us. What we possess is far more than the mere likeness captured in a photograph.

“For the words they spoke are images of their souls.” What they said came from within them; it is a part of their very being. The study of Scripture is also essential for the reason given by the divine John Chrysostom: “Just as land that has not been watered cannot bring forth ears of grain, even if someone sows countless seeds in it...” No matter how many seeds you sow in the earth, he says, if you do not water it, not one will sprout. “So also the soul, unless it is first watered by the Scriptures...” The soul is the same: dry and parched, like a thornbush. It will bring forth nothing good if a person does not read and know Scripture. “Even if someone pours out countless words,

it cannot display any fruit.” No matter how many words a person may speak, unless he is watered by the streams of the divine Scriptures, he cannot possibly understand what it is all about. And here is one more exhortation from the divine John Chrysostom: “We must continually apply ourselves to the divine Scriptures”—that is, you must remain in constant contact with the Scriptures. “For just as wine, when drunk, puts sorrow to rest”—just as you are cheered and strengthened when you drink a glass of wine, and it turns the heart toward gladness—“so Scripture, this spiritual wine, transforms the soul” through the reading of Scripture. I know many people who, in difficult moments and amid their troubles, seek counsel from Scripture. They make the sign of the Cross and open Scripture at random. Perhaps

the good God often answers their particular need, giving them an answer and a solution. Then they leap for joy, because they have received an authoritative answer—one brought down from Heaven itself. For I do not know whether you realize it, but this is Christ on paper. There, He was the Word (Logos) in the flesh; here, He is the Word on paper. Now I hold Christ on paper. There we had Him in the flesh, and here we have Him on paper. People in former times would never touch the Gospel without first washing their hands.

Today I have met a man who keeps a clean white handkerchief in his pocket, folded inside this book, inside

Holy Scripture, the New Testament. When he studies it, he opens it and handles it with the handkerchief, keeping his hands outside. He makes the sign of the Cross before he begins and again when he finishes. He kisses it, signs himself with it, and puts it back in his pocket. He does this because he understands that he is dealing with the One who is our Christ. I do not know what questions you may have, what thoughts are in your mind, how you think, or what you do. But I want you to know that anyone who does not know the Scriptures goes astray. Such a person goes astray—tragically astray. For if someone is in a foreign place without a guide, naturally he will not manage to reach his destination.

So it is in this case as well. Man is an exile here, and he needs a helper, a compass. Man is destined to return somewhere, is he not? But how will he return? Man is destined to live in Heaven. How will he reach Heaven? Of course, some people do not believe any of this. We are not speaking about those who do not believe. We are speaking about the person who says that he believes but is unable to prove or defend anything. Why? Because he does not study. Many questions remain unresolved even among Orthodox Christians today. One question is often raised, and we cannot answer it because we do not know Scripture: Who is our Maker? Who made us? If you go out into the marketplace, if you go out

If you go out into the world of human knowledge, you will come back with two hundred different answers. One person will say that we simply sprang up; another, that we developed from certain cells; another, that we descended from the orangutan; and others will say a thousand and one different things. But He has told us where we come from. Christians, at least—those who say that they accept Him and believe in Him, who have even taken His name and are called Christians—should be responsible in this matter and know how to answer: Who is our Maker? Who made us? Did we come into being by chance? It is absurd to believe that we arose by chance, because if everything is matter and depends upon matter, then what is the soul made of? What are our opinions and thoughts made of? What is the spirit made of? Or do we have neither spirit nor thought?

How do we think? How do we speak? How do we question something, scheme, tell lies, and withhold the truth? Who is it within us who cuts the film, inserts a lie, and does not tell the truth as he saw or heard it? This is something of a mystery. There is a craftsman behind all these things who made them. But because people do not know the Scriptures, they do not know how to answer. And for an Orthodox Christian, Scripture does not mean only Holy Scripture—the Old and New Testaments—but also Holy Tradition. The teaching of the Holy Fathers constitutes sacred writing. The councils that took place, with their wonders, also constitute sacred writings. The hymnography of the Church, which is entirely dogmatic, constitutes sacred writing as well. A person is obliged to know these things: the Scriptures, the Fathers,

and the hymnography. This threefold treasury is what the believer must read so that all his questions may be resolved. More specifically, who does Holy Scripture say made us? The answer is that God made us. As soon as you open the first book, Genesis, to chapter two, verse seven, you find this: “And God formed man of dust from the earth, and breathed into his face the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” That is the first piece of testimony. But who saw Him form man? There was no human being there at the time. Who saw it? What answer should we give to this? What is the answer that must be given?

The answer is that Christ Himself revealed His identity. He revealed who He is. When Christ came here...

into the world, as you remember from chapter nine of John, He met a man who had been blind from birth and worked a miracle upon him. He put clay on his eyes and fashioned an eye for him. The eye is the most delicate part of the human body. A little saliva and earth cannot ordinarily produce anything. What did Christ reveal through this miracle and this divine work? He revealed His identity: that He is the One who made us. They asked, “Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

“Neither this man sinned nor his parents.” Then why was he born blind? “That the works of God should be revealed.” When I made you, you were not there. Now I will show you; I will give you a demonstration to help you recognize who your Creator is. If someone does not wish to accept it, then let him never accept it. Yet Christ condescended in this way to help us see that He is the Creator. Let any man—or all the scientists of the world together—come and make eyes for us from saliva and earth. They will not be able to do it. Under no circumstances will they do it. Yet man does not wish to understand this.

Then the Church comes from another part of the scriptural witness and, in her own way, reminds us of the One who fashioned us; she reminds man that he is a creature, a creation of God. For example, in the funeral service she says, “You who in the beginning fashioned man according to Your image and likeness...”

We confess that it was He who made and fashioned man. The priest proclaims this at the hour of our funeral. I also find there another passage, which I will repeat to you. You know it as well. It was written by the Psalmist David in Psalm 118, verse 73: “Your hands have made me and fashioned me; give me understanding, and I shall learn Your commandments.” David confesses that the hands of the Lord made and fashioned him. Now, if a man loses his senses and wants an ape for his father, what can we do? Let him have the ape for his father. But we are not speaking to such people. They can go down and look for dates and find their relatives. We are speaking to people who believe, at least in some fashion, so that they may hear that Christ is...

the Creator of man. Moreover, John, the beloved disciple, says in his Gospel, “Nothing that was made was made without Him.” There is also another troparion which the Church sings: “I am the image of Your ineffable glory, though I bear the scars of my transgressions. Have compassion upon Your creature, Master, and cleanse me by Your loving-kindness.” This is, in a certain literary sense, an appeal that presses Christ Himself: Do not forget, it says to Him, that although I am a sinner and bear the stains of sin and uncleanness, I am still the image of Your ineffable glory, though I bear the scars of my transgressions. Even though I bear these offenses upon me, have compassion—take pity upon Your creature, Master—and cleanse me by Your loving-kindness.

“Grant me the beloved homeland, making me once again a citizen of Paradise.” What is this beloved homeland? Paradise. If, then, a person were willing to study and attend either to the texts of Holy Scripture or to the texts of the Church, which he claims to accept, many of his questions would be resolved.

There is something else I want you to know, because it leads us back to the same thought. It appears in a prayer for one who is at the point of death. I do not know whether you are aware that there is a service for those who are struggling to die—for the many people who linger and suffer for days before death comes. At such a time the Church hastens to their aid with a service and prayers.

One of these prayers says the following:

“O our God, who in Your ineffable wisdom created man from dust—from the earth—and formed him with beauty and comeliness, adorning him as a precious and heavenly possession for the praise and splendor of Your glory and Kingdom, having brought him into being according to Your image and likeness.

But because he transgressed the commandment You had given, partaking of the image but not preserving it, therefore...”

In this prayer too, to put it briefly, the Church says that God is the Creator of man and that He made him from dust, from the earth. After all, if we have ever attended the exhumation of someone dear to us, we will have seen a little earth inside the coffin and the person’s bones, if even those had not entirely returned to the earth. How beautiful are the words, “You are dust, and to dust you shall return,” and also those other words spoken there: “Into the elements from which he was composed.” Man is dissolved back into the elements from which he was formed.

What will happen afterward is another matter, whose answer must be sought elsewhere. But the prayer goes on to say, “So that evil might not become immortal, in Your love for mankind You commanded this dissolution.” So that evil and death might not remain forever and become immortal, You permitted man to be dissolved. “And, O God of spirits, by Your wise counsel You commanded this unbreakable bond to be severed...”

“the body to be dissolved into the elements from which it was composed, and the soul to depart to the place from which it received its being, until the common Resurrection.” This is a complete lesson, a complete teaching. Yet I repeat: for many people the truth of these matters remains veiled, because man does not read, and so even our own existence remains a mystery to us.

Many people ask: Why must we die? Is it necessary for us to die? And who made death? Did God make death? Impossible! Yet many people blame God for death. In the prayer of the Church that I read to you earlier, it says, “In Your love for mankind You commanded this dissolution”—that the soul should be separated from the body—“and, O God of spirits, by Your wise counsel You commanded this unbreakable bond to be severed.” Does man know that there are two kinds of death?

God did indeed permit one kind of death, but it is a beneficial death. He permitted a death that helps man, so that evil might not become eternal, so that death might not become immortal. Man does not understand that there are two kinds of death. He always speaks only of the death for which we dress in black—as we do, as I have said—and say that we have lost our loved one. Yet that is not truly what has happened. This death is a blessing. If there were no death and everyone suffering from tuberculosis remained alive, what would happen? If there were no death and all those with cancer remained in that condition, what would happen? If there were no death and everyone remained crippled, everyone insane, and so forth, what would happen?

The world would be one vast asylum. Yet death is a release. Death is a blessing. But because man does not believe in the Resurrection, he does not want to hear about death. Still, I would like you to know this: “God did not make death.” So writes Solomon the Wise in chapter one, verse thirteen, “nor does He delight in the destruction of the living.” He takes no pleasure in such a thing. And elsewhere, in chapter two, verse twenty-three, Solomon says: “God created man for incorruption and made him in the image of His own nature.”

“But through the envy of the devil, death entered the world.” When did God ever create death? There is a death of the soul and a death of the body. The separation of the body from the soul is the death of the body, while the separation of the soul from God is the death of the soul. Adam and Eve died when they disobeyed—but spiritually, not bodily. They were separated from God and cut off from life. They underwent bodily death 930 years later. There are two deaths: spiritual death and bodily death. Spiritual death came at the very moment of disobedience...

Bodily death came 930 years later. My beloved, there are also living people who are dead. In the parable of the Prodigal Son, when the father was speaking with the elder brother, he said at one point, “This brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” But how was he dead? He was out celebrating with his women. That is precisely the point. Do you know how many walking cemeteries there are among us, how many people among us are alive yet dead to God? Our children, our siblings, our parents, our spouses, our friends. Anyone who has no relationship with Christ—not merely an intellectual relationship...

but a sacramental and organic relationship—is a living corpse. Do you remember what Christ said to the angel of Sardis, the bishop of Sardis? Have you ever read it in the Apocalypse? “You have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.” Have you ever read this or paid attention to it? At some services of Holy Unction, that passage from the Gospel of Luke is read about a young man who followed Christ. He asked for permission to go and bury his father, but Christ did not grant him permission to do so. He told him, “Let the dead bury their own dead.” There are dead men wearing neckties back home in your village who will bury your father. You, follow Me.

He did not let him go to his father’s funeral. Do these things mean nothing to us, or do we avoid them for fear that Christ might take away our wallet? This is how matters stand: everyone who lives apart from the sacramental life of Christ’s Orthodox Church is a living corpse. He has natural life, but not spiritual life. He has the kind of life possessed by birds, animals, fish, and every other living creature. He merely eats in order to live, not in order to take flight; he is incapable of flying. God, then, did not create death. Death entered through the envy of the devil. The devil intervened, played his game, and led Eve into disobedience, and then Adam as well.

In this way they were cut off and died, and for this reason God cast them out of the living body of Paradise. Every organism expels what is dead. If, God forbid, a mother’s child dies in her womb, what will happen? Her body will expel it. Everything that erupts from our bodies—pimples, blemishes, and the like—is dead matter that the organism expels. In the same way, the living Body of Christ expelled Adam from His Paradise. And so it is today with all those who have been cast out: those who have no relationship with Christ are not alive. They remain on the level of natural life, nourished by material goods, as though they were flesh alone and not also spirit. They receive no spiritual nourishment.

In any case, after all that has been said, another question arises for many people: “Through the envy of the devil, death entered the world.”

Why, then, did God make the devil, so that he might lead man astray?

Would God have made the devil? Is that what Holy Scripture says? How do you know that man was led astray? From the Scriptures. You were not there. Those who discuss these things draw their knowledge from the Scriptures. Well then, what does Holy Scripture say about the devil? Do you not read a little further? But people do not read, and so this remains a question for them: “Why did God make the devil?” Or again, “Why did God make man capable of being led astray by the devil?” The question has two parts. Yet although an answer exists in both cases, people do not know how to respond, because they are far from the spirit of Holy Scripture. They do not read or study, and so they fall into error. Thank you very much.

Who made the devil? God did not make the devil. This is stated clearly in Isaiah, chapter 14. Those of you who were here with us on Thursday will remember that, when we spoke of a third kind of death, we presented the passage from Isaiah. There the prophet sees Lucifer desiring to set himself above the throne of God; and through his attempt to exalt himself above God, he found himself cast down into Tartarus. God did not create him as the devil. He had created him as an angel. Of his own free will, he abandoned his dwelling place, his appointed position where he had been placed to serve and offer his ministry.

As Paul says, drawing from the Old Testament, the angels are “ministering spirits sent forth to serve those who are to inherit salvation.” They are spirits sent to human beings who desire salvation. One who desires salvation is the Orthodox Christian, who must be baptized; and from the day of his Baptism, a guardian angel is given to watch over his soul. Those of you who pray from the texts of the Church will know that there is a special prayer to our guardian angel. It is found in Compline in the evening, after “O spotless, undefiled...” and the other prayers. Following the prayer to Christ comes the prayer to our angel.

“O Angel, guardian of my wretched soul and my miserable life, do not forsake me, a sinner, nor depart from me because of my lack of self-control,” and so forth. In the Epistle of Jude, in Holy Scripture, we find the answer: God did not drive the devil away; he became what he is by his own choice. Although he was an angel, he abandoned his own dwelling place. Listen: “And the angels who did not keep their own principality, but abandoned their proper dwelling, He has kept in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day.” It says clearly, “having abandoned their proper dwelling.” They themselves did not remain in their appointed place. And you know, the appointed places of human beings, of the Saints...

of our Most Holy Theotokos, and of the angels are places in which each has a particular role to fulfill. When a person leaves that place and abandons his mission, he loses his worth. Let me give you an example. Protestantism casts our Most Holy Theotokos down: she was merely a woman, merely one Mary, one maiden, one virgin among many. But what, then, of the words, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive”? The definite article singles out the person and points to one unique person: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive...

and bear a son, and you shall call His name Emmanuel.” In our Church, we place her at the right hand of the Lord, just as David saw her when he said, “The queen stood at Your right hand, clothed in a garment woven with gold and richly adorned.” These are also the words spoken by the priest or Archbishop when he performs the Proskomedia in the Church in the morning. From the prosphoron brought by us, the faithful, he removes the portion for the Most Holy Theotokos—a triangular piece marked “Mother of God”—and places it at the right hand of the Lord upon the holy diskos. That is the place of the Theotokos: to intercede with Christ on our behalf. As the Orthodox Church rightly says, “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos...

O Savior, save us.” The Theotokos intercedes, and Christ saves. Then Protestantism comes along and says, “Come down from there, from that place. She has no place beside Christ; she was only a woman.” Papism, on the other hand, takes her from there and raises her above: she is no longer merely the Most Holy Theotokos, but treated almost as God. It declares the Immaculate Conception of the Most Holy Theotokos. This, they say, is why the papists make the sign of the cross with five fingers: the Holy Trinity, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Pope—five.

The one who casts her down and the other who raises her above her proper place both blaspheme her. Her place is at the right hand of the Lord. That is the truth. The devil sought to rise above his appointed place and found himself cast beneath it. His place was not above. His appointed task was to minister and serve wherever Christ sent him. He was the greatest cherub; he beheld the glory of God face to face, and yet he did not wish to remain in his place. Jude says in his epistle, “The angels who did not keep their own principality”—those who did not remain in their appointed place—were cast down and await the judgment of the Great Day. Consequently, God did not create the devil. Through his own freedom, he made himself the devil.

People simply do not know, I repeat, how this matter truly stands.

People are left with these questions because they do not read. All the answers are found in Holy Scripture. If we have no answers and others unsettle us with their questions, it is because we have not read. They have not read either, and so we imagine that we are all trying to see in the dark. Here, then, we see that death came from Satan. What happens now? We can accompany the dead only as far as the grave; we cannot go beyond it. We may beat our breasts and say how deeply we loved the departed man or woman and that we cannot live without them. But if they widen the grave a little and say, “We can put you in there too; will you go with them?” you will turn back. You stop at the grave. So, is there life beyond the grave? How do these things stand? This is another serious question...

that troubles many Christians. Most of us do not believe that there is life beyond the grave. That is why we dress in black and why we mourn. If we knew that there is life beyond the grave—and indeed, a life better than this one—we would rejoice, though naturally we would grieve for a time because of the separation. An entire person disappears from the home and from our company. You lose a single tooth, and your tongue searches for it for two or three months because a tooth is missing. How much more natural is this when a whole person is gone, especially someone who played a major part in our life? This is a real question. Yet most of us Orthodox Christians do not believe, at least judging by our behavior, that there is another life. Of course, if we tell someone that there is, the answer will be, “And who has gone there and returned to tell us...

what is there?” The rich man said the same thing to Abraham: people do not believe the Scriptures. But Abraham told him, “If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.” Those who are unwilling to believe the Scriptures, he says, will not believe even if someone returns from the dead. We will simply say that he had only appeared to be dead and that science has explained it.

In any case, to the question, “Who went from here to there and then came back?” the answer is: Christ was there, and He came here. Christ, who came here, returned there, and He is waiting for us. We sometimes speak of a forerunner. Can you tell me how many forerunners there are? Many people know John the Forerunner, yet there are three forerunners. There is John the Forerunner, who prepared for Christ’s first coming into the world. When Christ comes again, His forerunner will be the Prophet Elijah. The second forerunner of Christ’s Second Coming is the glorious Elijah. Yet those who bear the name Elijah know nothing about this. They have never even considered what their saint’s dismissal hymn says. They do not even know that Elijah is still alive. They do not even know that Elijah will return.

These things are not hidden. They are all found in the Gospel, and they are also found in the Old Testament. And there is a third forerunner, who prepares for mankind’s return to heaven. Why did Christ come into the world? So that man might return to heaven. Before Christ came into the world, who was His forerunner? John. And before man goes to heaven, who is his forerunner? Jesus—Christ, who became the Forerunner on our behalf. Christ came, died, was buried, rose again, and has gone into heaven as our Forerunner. Do we believe this? Did Christ die or not? He died. Did Christ rise or not? He rose. His tomb is empty.

The burial shrouds of all the founders of religions remain fixed in the earth: those of Buddha, Muhammad, Luther, Calvin, Russell, the popes, and all the rest. Only the tomb of Jesus—the Crucified One, the Nazarene—is empty. And the tomb of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), His Mother, is also empty, as I will show you this evening.

Is Christ a historical person or not? You believe that Plato’s olive tree is three thousand years old. Christ is more recent, so why do you believe in Plato’s olive tree but not in Christ? Do you not believe that the Apostle Paul came here to Athens and overturned all their stone idols? Did he not speak here to our forefathers on the Pnyx?

How, then, would we have Christianity today? Who brought it to us? Who sent him here? And what did the Apostle Paul proclaim and command when he came here? “Having overlooked the times of ignorance, God now commands all people to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness through one Man, who is Christ.” Read the seventeenth chapter of Acts, and you will find the answer there.

So there is One who came from there. But let me tell you something else.

You ask me: Was there a Lazarus? Did Lazarus die or not? Does his tomb still exist today, empty? It does, in Bethany, and in due course I will show it to you as well. Christ raised him after he had been dead for four days. Lazarus lived for another thirty years. Did Lazarus become a bishop in Cyprus or not? Is his tomb in Cyprus, and is the body of Lazarus in Constantinople, or is it not? He went there and came back. Does even he mean nothing to you? People ask, “Is there life beyond the grave? And what did Lazarus, who returned from there, say? What did he preach?”

Open the Triodion and read the Synaxarion for Lazarus Saturday—the text printed there in black. You will discover that what Lazarus found beyond the grave was not pleasant, and when he returned here, he never opened his mouth to speak about it. Do you know what it says? Throughout all the years Lazarus lived afterward, he never ate anything without first sweetening it. Why was that? Lazarus had brought back with him the bitterness of death and Hades. He never laughed again in his life. Why? Lazarus found no cause for laughter here. What he had seen there was grim. Lazarus preached through this silence. We sometimes say, “My silence is my answer to you.” And often a person...

...says more with his mouth closed than with it open. Christ Himself remained silent when Pilate mocked or questioned Him. His refusal to answer was itself an answer. On what occasion did Lazarus laugh? One afternoon, as he sat in his room, he looked down and saw a flower seller steal a clay flowerpot from a house and place it on his cart. The sight struck him as so strange that he laughed. When his sisters came and said, “Lazarus laughed! What was it?” he replied, “I laughed because I saw clay stealing clay.” He saw earth, that is, stealing earth.

The Jews wanted to kill him—read the Gospel of John—because many people believed in Christ on account of him. That is why the Apostles sent him away from Jerusalem to Cyprus. He became bishop of Kition for thirty years and then died there. The Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) even wove his omophorion, just as she had woven the seamless tunic of Christ. She wove his omophorion. These witnesses, then, tell us that there is life beyond the grave. But besides this, when Christ told us the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, did He not draw back the curtain and show us that there is life beyond the grave, that human beings continue to live? And had He not already told us that God is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—that He is not the God of the dead, but of the living? What more do you want, O man? But I repeat:

Man does not want to believe; man does not read or study. We shall stop here, however, because the hour is late, and, God willing, we shall continue in our next talk this coming Sunday.

«Αλλ’ ως άγγελοι Θεού εν ουρανώ εισί». Όπως είναι οι άγγελοι, ουδέτεροι, δεν είναι αρσενικό και θηλυκό. Δεν έχουμε πλέον πολλαπλασιασμό. Έτσι θα είναι, λέει, μετά την Ανάσταση. «Περί δε της αναστάσεως των νεκρών ουκ ανέγνωτε το ρηθέν υμίν υπό του Θεού λέγοντος· εγώ ειμι ο Θεός Αβραάμ και ο Θεός Ισαάκ και ο Θεός Ιακώβ; Ουκ έστιν ο Θεός Θεός νεκρών, αλλά ζώντων. Και ακούσαντες οι όχλοι εξεπλήσσοντο επί τη διδαχή αυτού». Δεν έφεραν αντίρρηση. Έτσι ήσαν γραμμένα, όμως γι’ αυτούς ήσαν βαθιά σκοτάδια, όπως είναι και για μας. Και γιατί δεν έχουμε εμείς γνώμη πάνω στα θέματα αυτά και γιατί πλανώμεθα;

η Υμνολογία. Το τρίπτυχο αυτό είναι αυτά που πρέπει να διαβάζει ο πιστός και να έχει λυμένα όλα του τα προβλήματα. Στη Γραφή συγκεκριμένως, ποιος μας εποίησε; Η απάντηση είναι ότι μας έκανε ο Θεός. Μόλις ανοίξεις το πρώτο βιβλίο της Γενέσεως, στο δεύτερο κεφάλαιο, στίχος 7, θα βρεις το εξής: «Και έπλασεν ο Θεός τον άνθρωπον χουν από της γης και ενεφύσησεν εις το πρόσωπον αυτού πνοήν ζωής και εγένετο ο άνθρωπος εις ψυχήν ζώσαν». Πληροφορία πρώτη. Και ποιος Τον είδε ότι έπλασε τον άνθρωπο; Τότε άνθρωπος δεν ήταν. Ποιος είδε; Τι απάντηση πρέπει να δώσουμε σε αυτό το πράγμα; Ποια είναι η απάντηση που πρέπει να δοθεί;

Ερώτημα που υπάρχει σε πολλούς ανθρώπους: γιατί να πεθαίνουμε; Είναι ανάγκη να πεθαίνουμε; Και ποιος τον έφτιαξε τον θάνατο; Ο Θεός τον έφτιαξε τον θάνατο; Αν είναι δυνατόν! Και εντούτοις πολλοί κατηγορούν τον Θεό για τον θάνατο. Σ’ αυτό που σας διάβασα γρηγορότερα, στην ευχή της Εκκλησίας, ομιλεί ότι «φιλανθρώπως εκέλευσας την διάλυσιν ταύτην», να χωρίζεται η ψυχή από το σώμα, «και τον άρρηκτον τούτον δεσμόν, ο Θεός των πνευμάτων, τω σω σοφώ βουλήματι αποτέμνεσθαι», να χωρίζεται. Γνωρίζει ο άνθρωπος ότι υπάρχουν δύο θάνατοι;

Ναι μεν ο Θεός επέτρεψε έναν θάνατο, αλλά έναν θάνατο ευεργετικό. Επέτρεψε θάνατο που τον άνθρωπο τον βοηθάει, ίνα μη το κακόν αιώνιον γένηται, ίνα μην ο θάνατος γίνει αθάνατος. Δεν γνωρίζει ο άνθρωπος ότι υπάρχουν δύο θάνατοι. Λέει πάντοτε γι’ αυτόν που μαυροφορούμε εμείς, όπως μαυροφορούμε, όπως είπα, και αυτόν που λέμε εμείς ότι χάσαμε τον άνθρωπό μας. Και εντούτοις δεν είναι αυτό. Αυτό είναι ευεργεσία. Εάν δεν υπήρχε ο θάνατος και υπήρχαν όλοι οι φυματικοί, τι θα γινότανε; Αν δεν υπήρχε ο θάνατος και ήσαν όλοι αυτοί που έχουν καρκίνους και καρκινοπαθείς, τι θα γινότανε; Εάν δεν υπήρχε ο θάνατος και ήσαν όλοι χωλοί, όλοι τρελοί, όλοι, όλοι, τι θα γινότανε;

Γιατί να κάνει τον διάβολο τότε ο Θεός, ώστε να παρασύρει τον άνθρωπο;

Είναι ιστορικόν πρόσωπον ο Χριστός, τι είναι; Εδώ πιστεύεις ότι η ελιά του Πλάτωνος είναι τριών χιλιάδων ετών. Ο Χριστός είναι νεότερος, γιατί πιστεύεις στην ελιά του Πλάτωνος και στον Χριστό δεν πιστεύεις; Ότι ο Παύλος ήρθε στην Αθήνα εδώ, δεν το πιστεύεις; Και γκρέμισε τα λιθάρια όλα. Δεν μίλησε εδώ στους παππούληδές μας, στην Πνύκα;
