Summary
The lecture begins with the Panagia Tricherousa, explaining how the Theotokos restored Saint John of Damascus’s severed hand and inspired him to add a silver third hand to her icon in thanksgiving. The speaker presents wonderworking and acheiropoietos icons—including those at Eikosifoinissa, Thessaloniki, and Zograf Monastery—as tangible signs of divine power beyond ordinary sensory experience. The lecture concludes that miracles, relics, icons, fulfilled vows, and ecclesiastical history make Orthodoxy a concrete encounter with Christ rather than an abstract religious idea.

But we will show you this evening. You will remember that we were speaking about the holy icons, which are living proof for us. Through their miracles, through the way they appeared, and through the fact that they have been preserved to this day, the truth of the Orthodox faith and the power of God are demonstrated. We had reached the point where we were speaking about the Most Holy Theotokos Tricherousa, the Three-Handed Icon. We said that its story begins with Saint John of Damascus, whose hand was cut off and then restored by the Most Holy Theotokos.
When he was brought before the court as a supposed impostor, he proved that this was not the case but that a miracle had taken place, because the Most Holy Theotokos had left a deep ring-like scar around his wrist, showing that the hand had once been severed and then joined back on.
As a sign of gratitude for this benefaction, Saint John later made an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos and placed a third hand at its lower part, saying, “This belongs to you, because you gave my hand back to me.” She also strengthened him to fulfill both his vow and the promise he had made: that if she restored his hand, he would devote it to her glory. And so John of Damascus wrote all those works which our Church possesses.
These things are unique. God willing, when during these evenings we come to show you scenes and places from Israel, our series will include the Holy Lavra of Saint Sabbas in the desert of the Jordan, where John of Damascus also lived. The tomb of Saint John of Damascus is there as well; he was a figure of the seventh century. When he made this votive offering, this icon, he also uttered a prophecy. The prophecy was this: “One day you will give this icon to a king named Michael.” And indeed, about three hundred years passed.
After three hundred years, Michael, the ruler of Serbia, came down to visit the Holy Land and reached the Lavra where John of Damascus had lived. The brotherhood did indeed give him this icon, and John’s prophecy was fulfilled in Michael, the ruler of Serbia. The icon was then taken to Serbia. The Serbs regarded it as such a great treasure, like another Ark of the Covenant, that in every difficult hour they sought the help of the Most Holy Theotokos. They even carried the icon on military campaigns. Whenever they went to war, they took it with them.
The holy icon was loaded upon a mule and carried to the front like another Ark, just as the Hebrews carried the Ark with them on their journeys. But once the mule and the icon disappeared—or rather, the mule disappeared together with the icon—in a miraculous way. They were gone. Where were they? The Most Holy Theotokos would show where she wished to be. In any case, the Serbs no longer had the icon. One night, during the vigils held on the Holy Mountain, at about two or three in the morning, one of the monks from the Holy Monastery of Hilandar—a Serbian monastery—went outside for some reason and saw, about four hundred metres from the monastery,
a pillar of fire, like the one we mentioned in connection with the Portaitissa Icon, reaching from earth to heaven and illuminating everything. He ran inside and reported it to the abbot and the fathers, and they set out to investigate and see what it was. When they arrived, they found a mule lying on the ground, exhausted by its long journey, its weariness, and its lack of food, with an icon loaded upon its back. The mule from Serbia had arrived at the Serbian monastery on Mount Athos. It had plainly brought the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos to the Holy Mountain for safekeeping and as a blessing; that is, it had brought her into the Garden of the Most Holy Theotokos.
Mount Athos is called the Garden of the Most Holy Theotokos. It is called the Holy Mountain, just as another region is called the Holy Land, but there is a great difference. In the Holy Land you see and venerate holy places; on the Holy Mountain, however, you venerate holy people. What is the difference? Mount Athos is a garden inhabited by people who labor every day both for the salvation of their own souls and for the well-being and spiritual benefit of the whole world. So that is where the icon came. What a strange and wondrous thing! They unloaded the mule, set the icon aside, and then received it with due honor, with banners, processional fans, and the rest.
They carried it into the church and placed it on the synthronon behind the Holy Table, just as the Axion Estin Icon is placed; this icon too stood directly behind the Holy Table. At that spot they built a small shrine on which the event is depicted: the mule bearing the icon, the radiant pillar reaching from earth to heaven, and then the fathers proceeding as though in procession, carrying the holy icon into the Holy Monastery. This, then, is how the holy icon of the Most Holy Theotokos Tricherousa came to be at the Holy Monastery of Hilandar. But the story continues.
The abbot of the monastery reposed, and, as you know, Christians do not always agree—and the contentious spirit associated with Thessalonica contributes much to this. For six months they could not reach agreement and appoint an abbot to take the place of the one who had departed. “This man must not be chosen; that man must not be chosen; not this one, not the next one.” And so the monastery remained almost without governance. One night, when the ecclesiarch went to light the oil lamps and prepare the church before the fathers came for the service, he found that the icon had moved from the synthronon to a place beside the bishop’s throne, where the abbot’s seat stands. The abbot’s seat is always beside the bishop’s throne.
The icon was standing upright in the abbot’s place. Let me mention that it is about one metre twenty centimetres high and approximately eighty-five centimetres wide. I have venerated it, and it is also double-sided, to use a foreign expression. On one side is the Most Holy Theotokos, and on the reverse is Saint Nicholas. It was plainly a wonder. When they found it there, they were afraid. Who had gone in, taken it from its place, and brought it there? With all reverence they took it and returned it to its former place. Strangely, however, the following morning it was found once again in the abbot’s seat, the place to which it had moved before. Even then, they did not yet understand.
They investigated the circumstances, trying to discover what was happening and who was doing it. In the end, they found nothing. Once more they took the icon and returned it to its place. On the third day, although everything was locked and the key was inside, the icon had again moved to the abbot’s seat. They stood there in astonishment, marveling at what had happened. While there was much discussion about the matter, a monk came from the wilderness of the Holy Mountain. He was a venerable man, held in great esteem by all the fathers of Mount Athos, a man respected by everyone. He went to the brotherhood and said to them, “I have a command from the Most Holy Theotokos: you are not to move her from that place again.
“For six months you could not agree. No one was willing, for the sake of love and unity, to yield so that an abbot might be chosen. From now on, she herself will be the abbess. No abbot will be appointed in this monastery again. She will remain there in her place.” And indeed, to this day the monastery has no abbot. Everyone goes and makes a prostration before the Most Holy Theotokos, whose icon stands upright directly beside the bishop’s throne. This, then, was the origin, the course of events, and the conclusion of the story of the Most Holy Theotokos Tricherousa.
When you hear various titles given to the Most Holy Theotokos, as I have told you, do not be scandalized. Some event gave occasion for an icon, a church, or a monastery to receive that name. Continuing along this line of thought, I do not know whether you are aware that, as I told you the day before yesterday, there are acheiropoietos icons—icons not made by human hands—of the Most Holy Theotokos and of other saints. When we say “not made by human hands,” we mean that no human hand created them; the image appeared by itself. Its very existence is due to divine power and demonstrates that there is something beyond what we see, touch, hear, and taste—beyond, in general, everything our senses tell us. I do not know whether any of you comes from Macedonia. There, on Mount Pangaion, there is a monastery
dating from the fourth century, earlier even than Mount Athos. The church of the Protaton dates from the ninth century, whereas I am speaking to you about the fourth. There stands a very large Holy Monastery with a history of about fifteen hundred years: the Holy Monastery of Eikosifoinissa. Its name is associated with the icon’s crimson color—the “crimson icon.” The monastery’s founder had carved a piece of wood, but it split; then, miraculously, the image of the Most Holy Theotokos imprinted itself upon that wood. There is no other icon like it, and it
is renowned throughout the land. Macedonia alone accounts for twenty and a half percent of the rest of Greece. You should know that the monastery lies within a triangle, between Drama, Serres, and Kavala. Militarily it belongs to Serres, administratively to Kavala, and ecclesiastically to Drama. The Bulgarians have done everything they could to remove it. The last time they looted and burned it, they truly reduced it to ashes, after first loading eighteen mules with gold and precious objects.
Although the whole monastery was reduced to ashes, the sanctuary, the holy icon, and the bell tower remained. And on the monastery’s copper-covered roof there are two cypress trees. It is a strange thing. People go there and rub their eyes in disbelief, wondering how the cypresses survive upon the metal sheeting; each is now about two and a half metres tall. They want to eradicate the monastery because it bears witness to the Greek character of Macedonia. That is why the Bulgarians want it removed. Yet for well over a thousand years its witness has been proclaimed everywhere.
They wanted to wipe it out. On one occasion they slaughtered 170 monks, and as soon as you enter the courtyard, you see a memorial there bearing their names. This monastery of Eikosifoinissa once had 365 cells and 365 monks, and it possesses this icon not made by human hands. Another incident revealing the power of the Most Holy Theotokos is the following. A Bulgarian officer wanted to plunder, so to speak, the monastery and take the icon as well, in order, as I have told you, to erase this memorial to the Greek character of Macedonia. So he devised a plan.
He came secretly by night, approaching from the sea. He stationed troops outside, surrounded the monastery, and considered how he would launch the operation in the morning and accomplish his purpose. The Most Holy Theotokos appeared to him and said, “Do not attempt this, lest you perish in the attack.” He dismissed it as something foolish and commonplace. In the morning he began the assault, succeeded in entering, and went so far as to stretch out his hands toward the holy icon. An immense invisible force hurled him backward against a great column and pinned him there. The imprint of his boot appeared on the marble floor, his pistol was imprinted in the marble, and even his horse—for he had ridden inside on horseback—left its imprint on another part of the marble.
Those marks remain to this day. I have seen them at least ten times, because every year during Bright Week we make a tour of Macedonia and stop there for a night. Who, then, can come and tell me that the Most Holy Theotokos was merely a woman, merely a saint named Mary? She was not simply a woman; she was the Woman. She was not merely a Mary; she was Mary. And she was not merely a virgin; she was the Virgin. Furthermore, for those who wish to hear about icons not made by human hands, besides the first two icons of the Most Holy Theotokos that I mentioned, and besides this one I have just described, there is in Thessaloniki the Panagia Acheiropoietos. There is an enormous church on Hagia Sophia Street, which is the—
You are from the Thessaloniki area, and I too am from Thessaloniki, so you should know that on Agia Sofias Street stands the Cathedral of Saint Gregory Palamas, and farther up is the church—not of a woman named Saint Sophia, but of the Wisdom of God. Some people say, “Evangelia, we are going to Saint Sophia.” But Saint Sophia is not a woman; it is a church of Christ dedicated to the Wisdom of God. So that second church is also dedicated to Christ, the Wisdom of God. And the third one, farther up on the right as we go down Egnatia Street, reached by descending a few steps, is the Panagia Acheiropoietos. Yes, there on Egnatia, with mosaics below. It has an acheiropoietos icon, an icon not made by human hands.
A person can only raise his hands in wonder at such a thing. Since we are speaking about icons not made by human hands, there is also another one: an acheiropoietos icon of Saint George at Zograf Monastery on the Holy Mountain. It came there in a miraculous way. When the monks said that it had not been made by human hands, a bishop visiting the Holy Mountain dared, it seems, to run his finger across the Saint’s face and say, “What is all this you are telling us?” As soon as he said this, his finger became stuck to the Saint’s nose in the icon. They tried to pull his hand away, but it would not come free. Nothing they did could release it.
They had to cut it off. The cartilage from his finger remains stuck to the icon of Saint George at Zograf Monastery on the Holy Mountain to this day. Take note of these things; they are recorded. The whole hand is not there, but the severed part remains. These things happen. A person can see them, experience them, smell them, and touch them with his own hand. They are tangible realities that do not pass away. Orthodoxy, then, and the great love of our Christ are not some abstract idea.
This is where we began: God did not leave us with faith alone, like a white cane in our hands, because faith is the cane used by the blind. A person without faith is blind. He is like someone who builds a house without windows, then sits in darkness and blames God. But why did you not put in windows? That is what man is like: he is blind. And the great questions are not mine, but the questions themselves: Where did he come from? Why did he come? And where is he going? This is the greatest matter that should concern every human being. He sees people leaving this arena every day; people are departing. Where are they going? That is the question. If only a person would pay attention and use this staff of faith, as a blind man uses his white cane and walks safely,
then you would see differently and live differently. Along these same lines, I would also like to tell you something concerning Saint Nicholas, who marks a clear dividing line between truth and falsehood. The body of Saint Nicholas remains whole. Have you ever encountered a relic of Saint Nicholas and venerated it? You have not. Relics of all the other great Saints are scattered throughout the Christian world. But those of Saint Nicholas? No, because his whole body is preserved. It was taken from Myra in Lycia to Bari in Italy.
There, in the church bearing the name of Saint Nicholas, before the Schism—before the papists began presenting themselves as infallible and so forth—they celebrated the Divine Liturgy, and myrrh flowed from the foot of Saint Nicholas. The clergy even took care to celebrate the Divine Liturgy as slowly as possible, so that they could collect more myrrh. Then came the time of the Schism. The Roman Catholics broke away, having decided that they were without error, and from then on things changed. When a Roman Catholic priest went to serve the Liturgy,
the Saint gave no myrrh in that chapel; but when an Orthodox priest went and served, the Saint gave myrrh. This was why the Roman Catholics sold Saint Nicholas to the Russians. The Roman Catholics do not possess Saint Nicholas today. Let them claim that they do; they do not. They sold him for this reason, because he did not approve of what they had done. This is encouraging for us. Did I not tell you the other day that, if a person knew even the history of Saint Spyridon and what he did to the Roman Catholics, no one would speak in their favor? He routed them when they repeatedly attempted
to damage his church, build their own altar there, and so forth. He warned them, “Do not interfere with me, lest I bring harm upon you.” They did not listen. He not only scattered them, but he also burned the portrait in Venice of the man who was leading them. He left him nothing. Read the Synaxarion, if you have one, or a separate Life of the Saint prepared by people who know the history. Then you will understand what Saint Spyridon means and how he dealt with the question of the true faith. Besides taking a leading role and defining doctrine at the First Ecumenical Council, the Saint also took a stand during his lifetime against papal primacy. And today the Saint is not there; as I told you, he was sold to the Russians.
They claim that they have him somewhere in the Vatican, in some basement or wherever, but that is false. They do not have him, because he did not endorse them. It is with this in mind that I speak to you. I simply want to remind you that we do not have one religion among many, as someone else has another religion. We have the true faith. And what is our faith? The Old Testament contains the prayer offered by the bishops when they come out holding the dikirion and trikirion—two candles and three—and pray: “O Lord, O Lord, look down from heaven and behold, and visit this vine.”
“And establish it, which Thy right hand has planted.” It says “this vine,” singular—not “these vines,” not many vineyards. There is one vine of Christ and one true faith. The others are religions: inventions of human pride and, very often, self-interest. The one Christian faith is that of Jesus of Nazareth, the Crucified One; it is Orthodoxy. None of the others can withstand historical examination. If we examine them historically, the Protestants will end up in the arms of Luther in 1519, while the papists will end up in the arms of the Pope in 1054. Then there are Menno and Russell, as I have shown; their followers will end up somewhere around the nineteenth century, in the arms of Russell. None of them can trace itself back to the Upper Room
in Jerusalem. Only Orthodoxy can. Even if we examine the matter solely from the standpoint of history, ours is the true faith. That is the reality, whether we wish to understand it or not. Continuing, I would like to mention something else concerning the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) that has become known even among you: the Holy Monastery of Malevi, as it is called, where this holy icon streams myrrh.
I brought you some of that myrrh in another year. This year, among my slides, I also have this monastery, from an earlier effort I made to collect certain accounts and share them with people who cannot travel there. This is something that has astonished the modern world. All those who wish to investigate it thoroughly,
if they go there with good intentions, will truly raise their hands in wonder. It is an icon that streams myrrh. The monastery is near Agios Petros in Kynouria, in the Peloponnese. For those familiar with the route, go by Corinth and Argos, but not Tripoli. Turn in at Kiveri, continue through Astros, and then go up to Panagia Malevi. You can also travel through Tripoli, of course, but that route is about forty or fifty kilometers longer.
When I was given the opportunity to visit the monastery, I found myself before a plain and humble icon, like a poor young maiden from a village. If you go there today, you will marvel at all the votive offerings—thousands of them! The holy icon is completely covered, and beside it is a display filled with still more. As we said on another evening, these have been earned, because we do not part with our money unless something has first been done for us. We say, “Do this for me and I will bring you an offering. Do this for me and I will bring it. If you do nothing for me, I will bring you nothing.” These are the rewards earned by the Most Holy Theotokos: she acted, and the people brought their offerings. May those who failed to bring what they promised be forgiven,
because we too are liars. Let us not behave like the man from Kefalonia who said, “Even if the Saint and Kogionaro see me through, I am not taking it,” though he had vowed to offer a candle as tall as a ship’s mast. Unfortunately, some people make vows and do not fulfill them, and others do the same. Do you know the popular saying? “Do not promise a candle to a Saint or a ring-shaped loaf to a little child.” They will keep complaining, calling out, and asking you for it. It is not that the Saint needs my offering. Who told you to make the vow? Who summoned you here? Who told you to trouble me? You make use of your other weaknesses and say, “I will bring you this, and I will do that.” The offering is required for your own good, so that you will not be a liar and be condemned as false and unfaithful to your word. The Saint has no need either of your coming or of your going.
Surely no one imagines that he can exalt a Saint or the Most Holy Theotokos any higher. Nor are they brought lower, however much we blaspheme or disregard what they teach. The place is full of offerings—apart, of course, from those that Christians have stolen and continue to steal. Christians can be great thieves, because many are Christians only on their identity cards. Many precious and important offerings have disappeared. Someone with skillful hands and light fingers passed by and removed them. So if someone who remembers the place as it was ten years ago visits today, he will say, “What has happened here?” Malevi is a matter that concerns all five continents. It is not confined to the small region of Kynouria,
or to Arcadia, or even to Greece. It concerns all five continents. If I were to recount the miracles that have come to my attention, you would be overwhelmed. I will tell you one. A woman in Johannesburg had heard about the miracles of the Most Holy Theotokos. She wrote to the holy monastery asking them to send her a small piece of cotton with a little myrrh, because she had a child possessed by a demon. The monastery received her request and mailed a letter with the cotton inside. During the flight, the airplane caught fire in the air. Nothing remained. All five people aboard were lost. When investigators searched the wreckage and the remains of the plane, they found the mailbag burned to charcoal. They opened it, and inside was a single letter, completely untouched. They took it and delivered it to its destination. When the postman arrived, he said, “I am bringing you the miracle letter.” It was the one letter containing the cotton with the myrrh of the Most Holy Theotokos, preserved through that airplane disaster.
Someone may wish to know the history behind this, because, unfortunately, it fell to me to make known this miracle, which had been taking place for many years. The bishop had forbidden anyone to publicize it, in order to silence malicious people who would say—as they still say today—that it was all about collecting money, that the nuns and the bishop had invented something to raise funds. So this event remained enclosed within four walls for many years. I have served in this ministry for thirty-three years, and I am paying the price for it now.
I remember exactly when it happened—ten, fifteen, perhaps thirteen years ago. One evening, after I had finished speaking in Athens and stepped down from the lectern, a very beautiful and dignified woman dressed in black approached me. She gave me a sealed white envelope with no inscription and no sender’s name. It was like the kind of envelope used for wedding or Baptism invitations. She said to me, “Mr. Panagopoulos, this has been sent to you from the Holy Monastery of Malevi. Inside is a piece of cotton with myrrh from the Most Holy Theotokos, and they are waiting for you to go there.” I took it, thanked her, noticed a fragrance, kissed the envelope, and placed it in my inside pocket. But I did nothing about it.
Did I act on it? What became of the envelope, I do not know. Why I did nothing, I cannot say. I knew nothing about Malevi or any of this. Almost exactly one year passed. On the anniversary, again one evening at Vespers, a very beautiful, tall woman dressed in black approached and gave me another white envelope, identical to the first. She repeated the same words: “Mr. Panagopoulos, this has been sent to you from the Holy Monastery of Malevi. Inside is a piece of cotton with myrrh, and they are waiting for you to go to the holy monastery.” I took it, kissed it, thanked her, and placed it in my inside pocket. Again, I did nothing. What became of it, I do not know. Then came the third year.
The same woman—tall, beautiful, and dressed in black—came and once again gave me an identical white envelope. I have written all this in the book I later published under the title Holy Monastery of Malevi. She repeated exactly the same words: “This has been sent to you from the Holy Monastery of Malevi. It contains cotton with myrrh, and they are waiting for you to visit the Holy Monastery.” At that very moment, something broke open within me. My nous, my spiritual mind, was opened—something one cannot explain. My nous was opened, and my conscience began to rebuke me. I said, “What is this? This is the third time. Who is this woman?” She was neither a personal acquaintance nor anyone I knew from the audience.
Was a pilgrim sending it to me? Was it the abbess? The abbess did not know me, as was later established; I was completely unknown to them. Who that woman was, I myself do not know. In my account I describe and portray exactly how the Theotokos arranged and acted so that this event might be revealed, so that so many thousands of people might receive mercy and the faith of the Orthodox might be strengthened—today, when that faith is being shaken, when icons are blasphemed, and when every religious value is collapsing. From that moment on, my conscience kept rebuking me. I began asking questions and leafing through the calendars and directories of the Metropolises, trying to locate the Holy Monastery of Malevi. By spring, I had begun to think it might be somewhere in the Peloponnese. Two friends of mine had invited me to a meal.
One of them was a professional driver from Aigio, and I said to him, “Since you people are always traveling the roads, have you ever heard of such a monastery?” Both of them answered together: “Yes, we have been there. There is an icon there that streams myrrh,” they told me confidentially. “Where is this place?” “It is in Kynouria,” he said, “to the left near Agios Petros.” “How do you get there? Is there a road? Do you go there regularly, if needed?” I asked. “The road is good,” he told me. “I will go.” “Is there a telephone?” “The monastery has a telephone.” So they gave me the number. I sat down and organized a three-day excursion through the Peloponnese, by way of Patras, Pyrgos, Kremasti, then down toward Tripoli and elsewhere, arranging for us to spend the second night at Malevi Monastery.
I found the telephone number and spoke with the abbess. I asked her, “Could a busload of us stay there?” She said, “It is summertime. Come, and we shall do whatever we can for you.” There were forty of us. Today you may go there and find a thousand people, eight hundred, seven hundred, or two hundred. But back then, no one knew anything about the place. So we made the journey. We reached Agios Petros by way of Tegea; you can trace the route from there. Once we left Agios Petros, we kept asking for directions until we found ourselves out in the wilderness. We could see a rise in the distance, but we could not reach it. Nasos Natzofanos stopped the bus. I asked him, and he said, “They tell me it is over there.” “God will help us.” The bus could not get close to the monastery and had to stop some distance away, at a place called Karydia, the Walnut Tree. The driver was a young man who blasphemed. I told him, “Be careful that the Most Holy Theotokos does not give you a fright.” And indeed, she did.
She kept him repairing the bus all night, even though the whole vehicle was brand-new. Yes, and the next day he admitted it. He said to me, “I deserved what happened.” When we arrived at the place called Karydia—if God ever counts you worthy to go there—as soon as I opened the bus door, such a fragrance came upon us that it overwhelmed us. I stopped there and said to them, “Brothers and fathers, ladies and gentlemen, take heed, because this is no laughing matter. I do not know whether you sense anything.” The bus was filled to overflowing with the fragrance. So, in awe and tears, all of us climbed up to the monastery. We left our luggage in the courtyard—I am giving you all the details now—and went inside to venerate the holy icon. I had brought nothing useful with me, not even a flash. I had a camera, but what could I photograph, and how? Just imagine: I took the entire icon stand and carried it outside into the courtyard.
When I show you the photograph, you can see that it was taken outside, in the evening sunlight. I was trying to make use of what little light remained as the sun was setting. We stood there open-mouthed before what we had encountered. We asked the abbess to tell us something about it. We placed her a little higher up on some steps, half the group sat below, and I had a thirty-minute tape recorder with which I recorded whatever I could. I then heard accounts, events, and miracles: the monastery had once stood at an elevation of two thousand meters, but the fathers died from the cold and snow, so it was moved down to one thousand meters—even though the monastery is said to be sixteen hundred meters above sea level, within the Avgí forest. The holy icon bears the number 717
as a date on its covering, because the icon has been encased in silver. As for the icon beneath, which depicts the Dormition of the Theotokos, I do not know how many years it had remained uncovered. It seems that, out of devotion, a certain believer had made a vow to have it covered in silver, and so he gave it this precious covering. Within me arose a strong resolve: “I am going to speak about this.” So I said, “Holy Abbess, how can this miracle of the Most Holy Theotokos remain shut within these four walls? Can we not make it known?” She replied, “His Eminence forbids us, because it will be characterized as a scheme for collecting money, and he does not want an uproar to arise.” “We are afraid,” I said. “But I will not obey His Eminence in this matter. As a private individual, as Panagopoulos, I will write about it and make it public. In the very next issue I publish”—I was publishing a magazine called Saint Marina—“I will write about the Most Holy Theotokos. Tell me everything you have; I will gather whatever else I can, and I will publish a book as well. I will put it under my own name, not the monastery’s, and send it to you.”
“Send it to His Eminence and say, ‘Panagopoulos wrote this.’ If he approves it, distribute it. If he does not approve it, I will sell it myself in Athens.” And that is exactly what happened. I wrote the first article, entitled “The Theotokos Works Miracles.” The Protestants had overwhelmed us, telling us that our icons were nothing but pieces of wood and that we were idolaters. Yet the Most Holy Theotokos works miracles, and we must not conceal it. Why should we? For what purpose? People may talk, but afterward they will take back their words and hold their tongues when they see the facts. So I wrote whatever I could, included a printing plate of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, and immediately wrote a book about the miracles, the history, and everything else I had learned. The monastery also received it.
I sent a shipment of copies to the monastery, and one reached the bishop. The poor bishop, as it seems, had been waiting for precisely this: for someone else to pull the snake out of its hole, so that it would not appear that he had done it himself, but that Panagopoulos, the madman, had written these things. Do you see my name anywhere? And so the matter was unveiled, and the doors of Malevi were opened. If you go there today, you will find a building capable of sheltering more than five hundred people at once. Unknown people come from the four corners of the earth, bringing the sick and those in need, who must remain there so that the monastery may shelter them and they may be healed. That is how it grew to such dimensions. And there remains yet another place under the protection of our Christ, where anyone who wishes may
go and put his finger into the nail mark, into the imprint of the nails, and become not unbelieving but believing, as the facts themselves declare. Of the things I have spoken about, most belong to the works of the Most Holy Theotokos. This does not mean that the miracles of Saint Nektarios of Aegina are few, or those of Saint Raphael and the other saints. No, that is not what I mean. Nor are the miracles performed elsewhere, at Spata, in the Church of Christ, few. Wherever one turns within Orthodoxy, one sees signs and footprints of the truth. The others are dry, utterly barren. They have nothing to show us, nothing to move our hearts. For us, Orthodoxy is a fresh and verdant garden. At every moment, a person finds consolation there. Even a small cross
from the Most Holy Sepulchre makes him feel as though he were holding the whole earth and all heaven in his hands. He holds a little piece of cotton or a little oil from some saint or from a lamp before an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, and he feels that he possesses everything. Do you know what the myrrh of the Most Holy Theotokos means? Let me tell you one incident. Yesterday, when I was showing you the icon of the Panagia Portaitissa, standing to the left was the man I told you was an Air Force officer. In his wallet he carried a little cotton with myrrh from the Most Holy Theotokos. At the Church of Christ the Pantokrator in Spata, there was a demon-possessed woman who turned her gaze. This man, standing opposite her and being a believer, timidly began taking the cotton from his wallet
and went to anoint her. From within her, the demon shouted: “I can see you! Take your hand away from there!” The man had been keeping the cotton completely hidden. At first, I did not understand what the demon meant. “You there, take your hand away! Take your hand away from there!” What was it? A little piece of cotton, something that seems like nothing at all. And yet, when it is used, the demon is restrained. If I were to tell you the miracles associated with this little cotton—which you regard as nothing—you would be astounded. Yet it possesses an unseen power and unseen grace. Sadly, as you can see, there are people who have not grasped the seriousness of this matter.
They speak against the Most Holy Theotokos because Satan knows the power, grace, and authority that our Christ has given her, and so he strives to remove her from the sight of the faithful. Perhaps you consider this an exaggeration. I will tell you one thing: Satan, and all those influenced by Satan’s opinion, hate the Theotokos even more than they hate Christ. Why do they hate her so much more, when Christ is the Sun, and without the sun there can be neither moon nor stars? It is Christ who gives honor and worth to the Most Holy Theotokos, to the saints, and to everyone. Do you know why? Because within the body she gave to Christ, she enclosed the Godhead.
Satan sought to despise the dust from which he was made and demanded heaven, and God cast him down headlong. Yet she was honored. Satan took care that there should be no virgins, because when God told him in Eden that the seed of the woman would crush his head and that he would bruise His heel, Satan remembered it. Satan knows that a woman does not have seed, that seed belongs to the man, and that the woman bears the child but does not beget, as we have explained before. According to Holy Scripture, Abraham begot Isaac; it does not say Sarah begot him. Isaac begot Jacob; it does not say Rebecca begot him. Jacob begot Judah and his brothers; it does not say Rachel begot them. Satan kept this prophecy in mind, and that is why he acted as he did.
Then, when he read what Isaiah wrote eight hundred and fifty years before Christ—“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son”—he thought, “God has not forgotten this, but I will outwit Him.” Yet it was God who outwitted him. Satan arranged matters so that, when our Lord came to earth, virginity was nowhere to be found. Corruption was even greater when Christ came into the world than it is today. But our Christ had placed His mother within the Holy of Holies. Satan made his calculations, but he was taken by surprise. Yes, Satan is a complete fool before God. God placed her there and then brought her out, placing an elder beside her so that the world would take him for her husband, and in this way He outwitted Satan. Remember this concerning the Most Holy Theotokos. For...
For a man to speak against the Most Holy Theotokos is bad enough. But for a woman to speak against her? A woman ought to feel honored and uplifted that the Most Holy Theotokos represents womanhood. Yet women too speak most harshly against her. That is why they strive to tear her down in the conscience of the people, especially of the Orthodox. They bring us scriptural arguments, and our own people stand there open-mouthed. “They are right. Why do you want to put her in the middle?” they say. “You should go directly to Christ.” And who is preventing you from going directly to Christ? But what harm is there if I say, “Lord, through Your Mother, have mercy on me”? What is it that troubles you? I go directly to Him and say, “My Christ, whatever we desire; my Christ, whatever we desire; my Christ, whatever we desire.”
I do say it. But if I say, “For the sake of the mother who gave birth to You, for the sake of the mother who nursed You, grant me this favor,” why should that trouble you? It does not trouble me; it troubles the devil who stands behind this opposition. These are very profound matters, but we do not look deeply into them. On another evening, by the grace of the Immaculate One, we shall discuss more fully the person of the Most Holy Theotokos, because this is of fundamental importance to us: “Today is the beginning of our salvation and the revelation of the Mystery from before the ages.” That is another matter. But they usually bring us, as you say, a verse from Timothy: “Do you not see? There is one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ. Why, then, do you introduce the intercessions of the Theotokos? Do you not see what Holy Scripture says?” Do we reject this verse? Far be it from me to reject it.
You have failed to notice one detail, and our own people fail to notice it too. Someone says, “Indeed, this has proved to be contrary to dogma. Since the Gospel says there is one mediator, the man Jesus Christ—Christ alone—it excludes everyone else.” Is that really what this verse says? Is that what it says? I do not know whether you are familiar with it. It is in the second chapter of the First Epistle to Timothy, verse four. Do you know what it says there? “There is one mediator, Jesus Christ, between God and men.” Indeed: He is God, He is man, and He is Christ. Christ, therefore, is the mediator between God and mankind. What, then, do we do?
Do we remove Christ from the middle and place the Most Holy Theotokos upon His throne? Is that what we do, O blind man? Is that what we do? Do we call upon the Most Holy Theotokos as a mediator before God the Father, or as an intercessor before Christ? Do we not say, “Intercede with Him who was born from you, O Lady of the world; become our intercessor”? Do we not say, “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior”—not “O Father”—“save us”? Are we so blind that, although we have reached the stars, we cannot see this? They fail to see it through carelessness and even malice. But can we not see it either? We do not remove Christ. We do not place the Most Holy Theotokos between the believer and God so as to remove Christ. We place the Most Holy Theotokos between the believer and Christ—Christ Himself. We do not say, “My Christ, move aside over there, beside Your Father.” I place her between the believer and Christ.
“Intercede with Him who was born from you.” Who is the One born of the Most Holy Theotokos? Christ. Therefore, where do I violate dogma, and where do I overthrow Holy Scripture? Do you understand? But, God willing, we shall say more about this on another evening.

Δεν έχεις προσέξει μια λεπτομέρεια, και δεν το προσέχουν και οι δικοί μας. Και σου λέει, «Πράγματι, αυτό βρέθηκε να είναι αντιδογματικό. Εφόσον το Ευαγγέλιο λέει εἷς μεσίτης, ἄνθρωπος Ἰησοῦς, ο Χριστός μόνο, άρα κλείνει τους άλλους έξω». Σοβαρά αυτό λέει το εδάφιο αυτό; Αυτό λέει το εδάφιο αυτό; Δεν ξέρω αν το ξέρετε το εδάφιο αυτό. Αυτό είναι το Β΄ κεφάλαιο, η πρώτη επιστολή προς Τιμόθεον, στίχος 4. Ξέρετε τι λέει εκεί; «Εἷς μεσίτης Ἰησοῦς μεταξύ Θεού και ανθρώπων». Μάλιστα, δηλαδή Θεός είναι Αυτός, άνθρωπος είναι Αυτός και Χριστός είναι Αυτός. Μεσίτης λοιπόν μεταξύ Θεού και ανθρώπων ο Χριστός. Τι κάνουμε λοιπόν εμείς;
