Summary

Orthodox faith is presented as supported not only by humble trust but also by tangible signs that can be examined through the senses and historical knowledge. The First Ecumenical Council’s teaching on Christ’s divinity and the Holy Trinity is linked to miracles involving Saint Spyridon, Saint Achillius, and Saint Nicholas against Arius. The lecture concludes that evidence does not compel everyone equally, because humility opens a person to God while pride and attachment to sin harden the heart.

This evening I wanted to show you something. You may remember that, at one point in our talk, we said there are many proofs of Orthodoxy—proofs based not only on faith, but also on knowledge. God has not left us with faith alone, so that we can only infer that ours is the true faith. He has also helped us to know what we believe.

There are many proofs through which a person can use even his senses and, through knowledge, put his beliefs on a firm foundation. He can be assured that what he believes is true, because it is also confirmed outwardly. You may remember that this came up when we spoke about the basil, which gives us a leaven starter. Sanctified by the grace of the Precious Cross, it has the power to act upon the flour, upon matter itself, producing fermentation and life, so that the dough can rise as it does for prosphora or ordinary bread. This is an outward manifestation that can be perceived by the human senses. Faith is not required here; you see it and know it.

You see it. You notice that it has taken on a different fragrance, and you see it make the bread rise. In this case faith is not required; it has now become knowledge. I said that, if we were given the opportunity, I would speak about other proofs and other things that can be known concerning our faith. Thomas carried out this first material test. As you know, Thomas was hesitant to believe. He was not faithless. We are wrong to call him “Doubting Thomas” as though he were an unbeliever. Thomas was not faithless; he was hesitant and wanted assurance. He wanted what we ourselves so often say—even I say it:

“Unless I see, I will not believe.” That is what he said: “Unless I too see, I will not believe.” I hear you, John; I hear you, Matthew; I hear you, Luke, and all the rest—but he remained unconvinced. Yet our Christ, who always condescends to do what is needed to help mankind, both then and now, preserved exactly the same circumstances, as you remember. They had told Thomas that, while the doors were shut, Christ had come and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you,” and so forth. Christ would deal with him too. Exactly eight days later, under the same circumstances—in the evening, with the doors shut—He came and stood in their midst while Thomas was present, and He addressed him directly. It was as though He took him by the nose, as we might say: “You, come here. Put your finger here, and do not become faithless—do not become so.” He did not say, “Do not be faithless,” but “Do not become faithless.” Thomas had not become faithless. He was hesitant and wanted more evidence. He wanted to verify what they were telling him through sight and touch and, more generally, through all the senses—smell and taste as well—and then believe it. And you know, people today have also transferred the whole matter of faith to what they can see with their eyes.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,” and “He who believes and is baptized will be saved.” A person hears, is baptized, and will be saved. “Faith comes by hearing,” the Apostle Paul also says. But we have changed this and say that faith comes “by seeing.” “Unless I see...” Yet if you must see, that is not faith; it is knowledge. And knowledge receives no reward, because it leaves room for the ego: “I understood it; I saw it for myself.” But you did not immediately believe it. If you can plainly see that something is a watch, yet insist that it is, say, a set of scales, then they will take you to the hospital. You cannot dispute what you see. But to believe without seeing requires humility, and humility comes very hard to us; it is rarely found within us. This is precisely why...

Our Christ, I say again, condescends to our weakness. And He did not condescend only then, for Thomas; He continues to do so perpetually. Until the end of the age, there will always be wounds of Christ in the world, so that whoever truly wishes may see, be strengthened in faith, and even, I dare say, come to faith. Many people, after seeing extraordinary miracles in their lives, began to turn and gradually draw near to Christ. We Orthodox have countless things that Christ, in His love, has left us as help, so that we may not become faithless or remain faithless or hesitant, but become faithful. Yet we do not pay attention to them. And although these things are beneficial,

they also have grave consequences. At one point the Gospel gives us a saying that I will remind you of: “He who knew and did not do it will be beaten with many blows.” The person who saw and yet did not believe, who refused to accept it, will be severely punished and condemned. If I were now to begin with the weightier matters and move toward the lighter ones—although in positive matters there is no flesh and bone; it is all flesh, all substance—nevertheless, I would begin by presenting one wound that gives not only us Orthodox, but the whole world, an opportunity to put a finger into it and become not faithless, but believing.

This is the wound of the Lord that remains exposed to this day: the All-Holy Tomb, the Holy Sepulchre. Someone may ask, “Do we not also have the tombs of the founders of other religions? Do we not have the tomb of Buddha? The tomb of Muhammad? The tombs of some pope, Calvin, Luther, Russell, or other founders of denominations and religions?” Yes, we have other tombs, but there is a difference. Do you know what it is? All the tombs of the so-called founders of religions are full, but the tomb of the Nazarene, the Founder of Orthodoxy, is empty. That is the difference.

The empty tomb of our Christ is proof of the truth. He is the Founder of the true faith, whom Hades was unable to hold. For when our Christ descended into Hades, as the Orthodox Church says, “Today Hades groans and cries aloud.” It groans and cries, “It would have been better for me had I not received Him who was born of Mary. I received a mortal man and encountered God. I received earth and met Heaven.” The empty tomb of our Christ in Jerusalem is therefore an exposed wound, not only for us Orthodox, but for the whole world.

Muhammad lies bound in his burial shroud in Mecca; Buddha too lies bound in his shroud; the pope, Russell—the founder of the Millennialists—Calvin, Luther, all of them lie bound in their burial shrouds. But of Jesus alone—the Nazarene, the Crucified One—it is said: “He is not here, but is risen.” All people who have not believed in Christ will go down and will not rise. Those who have believed in Christ will die, because they owe a debt to the earth and must repay it, but one day they will rise. The empty tomb of our Christ is the pledge of our own Resurrection and of the true faith.

Death, which threatened humanity, was unable to hold down the Author of life, as the Apostle Paul says in the second chapter of Hebrews. This, then, is one such wound. And today, unfortunately, when we ourselves ought to guard it more carefully, it is guarded even by Jews. There are soldiers there; there is a Jewish guard at the Tomb of Christ, in the Church of the Resurrection. Did you know that? It is a wonder of wonders that, among the enemies of the faith, He keeps this wound of His exposed, so that people may come, see, and believe. For I do not want you to be unaware of this: not every kind of faith saves. People are mistaken when they are content merely to believe in some higher being, some higher power, or in God. Others even believe in Christ, but not as incarnate and risen, or not as God. No. True faith is contained in the words God gave through Peter when our Christ asked, as we read in the sixteenth chapter of Matthew: “Who do men say that I am? Who do people take Me to be? You who go about in the marketplace, what do you hear?” Some answered, “They say You are Elijah”; others, Jeremiah,

John the Forerunner, or one of the prophets. “Very well, that is what the marketplace says. But who do you say that I, the Son of Man, am?” Then Peter gave that classic answer: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”—not of Apollo, not of Zeus, but of the living God. “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah.” Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah. Why, Lord, is he blessed? “Flesh and blood have not revealed this to you.” You did not learn what you have just said by yourself; My Father spoke it through you. Christ is not some founder who cannot withstand the test of history. His tomb is proof that He is the true One in whom everyone must believe. And when the myrrh-bearing women came, the angel said to them: “Whom do you seek here? You seek Jesus the Crucified, the Nazarene”—not simply Jesus, because there were many men called Jesus, but the Crucified One from Nazareth, the Nazarene. “He is not here; He is risen.” Thus, the empty tomb of our Christ, which has stood there for nearly two thousand years, is an exposed wound of our Christ. It allows every hesitant person to go and put his finger into the mark of the nails, and to become not faithless, but believing. And there in Jerusalem there is also another empty tomb.

It is the tomb of His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos. There are two empty tombs in Jerusalem. His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, has also left her tomb empty. The Author of life and the Mother of Life have empty tombs. For us Orthodox, these are tangible realities. They cannot be moved or dismissed. We do not rely on faith alone; we also have knowledge of these two realities. And you know of a third, resounding sign for the whole world: the Holy Light, which for two thousand years has been given on Great and Holy Saturday to the Orthodox alone. The Holy Light comes forth miraculously in the presence of all kinds of opponents. On the day when the Holy Light is to come forth, there are the Jews, the Arabs, the Armenians, millions of Catholics, the Syrians—everyone is there watching. Could a priest possibly enter, conceal a lighter, kindle the flame, and deceive all those people—and continue deceiving them for two thousand years? We stand amazed even at a miracle witnessed by one person in a hundred. This Holy Light, then, which comes forth and which Christ has given to the Orthodox faith alone for nearly two thousand years, is another exposed wound testifying to the authenticity of our faith and its Founder. Four times, various schemes were attempted

to prevent the Orthodox from receiving it, but it was never given to anyone else. One characteristic incident occurred in 1574, when the Armenians paid the authorities—for the place was then under Turkish rule—and had our Patriarch locked outside. Today, of course, the Israelis have taken control of everything there, including the Arabs. But those were the authorities at the time. The Armenians paid them and shut our Patriarch out. When our Patriarch arrived from the Patriarchate with his retinue, he found the doors closed and locked. So he sat outside with his people, deeply grieved. The Armenians remained inside for about two hours,

struggling and waiting for Christ to give them the Light, but He did not give it. While our Patriarch sat outside, praying and weeping, beside him stood three columns. The middle column split open and the Light came forth from it. He received the Light and distributed it to his people. That column remains split open to this day, blackened and scorched. And when Orthodox Christians arrive there from the ends of the earth to venerate the tomb of their Christ, they make a prostration before it,

Exposed to rain, wind, and sun for years, it still gives off the fragrance of the Holy Sepulchre, reminding everyone that the Light came forth from this place. God also confounds them so that they do not demolish the column, but leave it exposed. This is foolishness in the eyes of the world, yet it is the love of God for mankind. They could have covered it, destroyed it, or repaired it so that the evidence disappeared. Yet it remains there as a witness, so that the words He spoke may always be fulfilled: “If these should keep silent, the stones would cry out.” The stones themselves will speak. There is yet another testimony that this event is true: the holy relics of the Turkish emir who was serving as a guard.

He saw what happened and said, “This is the true Allah,” and they killed him. At the doorway on the right, which remains closed to this day, one can see where his blood soaked into the stone at the place where they burned him. His relics are kept at the Great Panagia, one of the twenty monasteries surrounding the Holy Sepulchre. His whole relics remain there, the relics of a sanctified man. Thus, the evidence is there if people, great and small, are willing to see it. But even the powerful deliberately shut their eyes, and propaganda is used to keep this matter hidden. Public opinion and the truth have been so corrupted that even some of our own theologians,

even university professors, question the Holy Light. Yet at every moment these enemies of the faith guard it and bear witness to it. In the Holy Edicule there are two openings in the wall through which the non-Orthodox, apart from the Catholics, receive the Light of the Resurrection. The Catholics light their own flame with a lighter. The Armenians, the Syrians, and the others there receive the Light through those openings from our Patriarch. It is material, tangible proof. What purpose does this opening in the wall serve? It immediately shows that they receive the Light through it. Therefore...

Does it bestow the Light? The Light is bestowed upon Orthodoxy. It always comes forth during a service held between eleven in the morning and one in the afternoon on Holy Saturday. By the time the Resurrection service is celebrated at night, the Light has already been received. The Light is not bestowed at a fixed hour; it is bestowed during the service. If the service is held at three, it will come forth at three. If it is held at ten, it will be bestowed at ten. God is not bound by time; God is timeless. And woe to those who try to confine God within time—they will always be proved wrong. This is yet another indication of how man ought to think about time. These, then, are the three fundamental events found there,

events powerful enough to bring the whole world to a standstill, especially those who go there yet look at them only from a distance. Once I was standing at the entrance to the Holy Sepulchre when a group of about thirty people arrived with an interpreter. And do you know what their guide told them? He did not let them go inside. He simply said, “In here is what is said to be the tomb of the founder of Christianity.” That was all. Then they turned around and left. “It is said to be the tomb of the founder of Christianity.”

We do not say this, mind you; that is what they say. Do you understand? In any case, besides what is found there, we have other events as well. How am I to believe that Christ is God? How am I to believe in the Mystery of the Holy Trinity? How can the Three be One and the One be Three? How can anyone believe such things? How can I believe that the Holy Spirit is God? I cannot grasp them. Look closely at the life of the Church; look closely at her Councils. Draw near to the Councils and read about what took place there. These are historical events, and through them you will see that the evidence extends further.

Other, new aspects help you look more closely and learn certain things. Let me ask you: has there ever been a spiritual Council at which the Holy Spirit was not present? Did the First Ecumenical Council not proclaim the divinity of Jesus Christ? Did it not proclaim the dogma of the Holy Trinity? Was this not disputed by Arius, the father of today’s Jehovah’s Witnesses? I ask you: did he not claim, as they still claim today, that some satanic priest invented the teaching of the Holy Trinity? No satanic priest invented it. The Holy Spirit established it at the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, which, as you know, was convened by Saint Constantine the Great and attended by 318 Fathers.

It was not the decision of one man, as with the Pope, whom they dogmatically declare to be infallible. The Church says, “Woe to him who is alone”—woe when everything rests upon one man. There were 318 Fathers, and Christ said, “Where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I in the midst of them.” Someone may ask: how can it be shown that their decisions were correct? By the miracles that occurred. They held discussions for days, whole days of debate, but neither side reached any conclusion. Then Saint Spyridon came forward and performed the miracle of the tile. In a tangible way—before their eyes, in their hands, through touch and the senses—he showed how the matter truly stood.

For those who were there, and for us who came after them, he left another side of Christ exposed to view, so that we might believe that this is indeed the truth. He took the tile, came forward, and said, “Arius, what is this tile made of?” Arius replied, “It is made of fire, water, and earth—the clay you yourselves speak of.” “Very well. In the name of the Father, Arius,” he said, and fire rose upward; “and of the Son, Arius,” and water flowed downward; “and of the Holy Spirit, Arius,” and only earth remained in his hands. Arius stood frozen. Yet although these things are written down, people do not read them. Did Arius believe? Arius did not believe. And when his mother asked him, “My child…”

“Who is right—you or Athanasius?” do you know what he answered? She adjured him by the milk with which she had nursed him. He replied, “Athanasius is right, Mother, but I cannot turn back.” That is heresy. This is why Paul says that after admonishing a heretic once or twice, reject him; for in persisting, he joins himself to the devil: “Reject a heretical man after the first and second admonition.”

A sinner! A sinner is one thing, an atheist another, an unbeliever another, and a heretic yet another. The heretic calls white black and black white. Did Satan not do the same? That was one miracle. This is why our Church says, “You were revealed as a champion and wonderworker of the First Council, O God-bearing Spyridon, our Father.” There was another miracle as well, before the Council began.

Before they reached the Council, Saint Achillius and Arius held a discussion, and a miracle occurred there. Achillius, our bishop of Larissa, said to him, “If what you say is true, then command this stone, in the name of your god, to produce oil.” Arius turned the challenge back on him: “No, you command it,” he said. Achillius said, “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” and the stone brought forth oil. That was the second miracle. The third miracle concerns Saint Nicholas. You remember that this most gentle Saint Nicholas could not restrain his indignation, as we would say, and struck Arius during the Council.

According to the law, his hand was to be cut off, because he had done this in the emperor’s presence. Saint Constantine the Great, the emperor, presided over the First Ecumenical Council, seated on a chair, not on a throne. The throne belonged to Christ, who also signed the acts of the First Ecumenical Council in red ink, a type—a foreshadowing—of the blood of Jesus Christ. Nevertheless, it was decided that Saint Nicholas should be deposed and imprisoned, and that his hand should be cut off when the Council’s work was completed. So Saint Nicholas was put in prison. The next morning…

A friend of his, having heard that he was in prison, came to bring him a little food. He found Saint Nicholas wearing his omophorion and holding the Gospel, perfectly calm and reading. What had happened? He was supposed to be a prisoner. The Lord Jesus Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos had visited him, and the Lord asked him, “What are you doing here, Nicholas?” He replied, “I am here for love of You, Lord.” Then the Most Holy Theotokos placed the omophorion upon him, and the Lord gave him the Gospel. This is why, if you have noticed, icons of Saint Nicholas characteristically show him with the omophorion and the Gospel. They were given to him in prison by the Most Holy Theotokos and by Christ, which means that they approved…

of the blow he had given Arius, for Saint Nicholas was restored to his office. Thus there were three miracles at once at the First Ecumenical Council, showing that Christ is one of the Holy Trinity, that the Trinity is One, and that the One is Three. Why, then, does man not seek out these things? Is this not something that assures us of the authenticity of our faith? Was it not arranged by the Holy Spirit so that, even through things perceptible to the senses, we might see that something is truly happening here? There was also a fourth miracle at the First Ecumenical Council, but I do not know what it was. I know the name of the Father who performed it—someone named Kourvounis—and that it was done in the name of the Holy Trinity. But I have not read precisely what the miracle was, so I do not know. Four miracles. When four miracles occur in one gathering, one event, one assembly, what are we to say? That these are merely human affairs?

Were they discussing merely human matters? No. If we turn again to the divinity of Christ, which was addressed by the Fourth Ecumenical Council, we find another miracle—one we hear mentioned in the dismissal hymn but fail to notice. Christ’s divinity was being disputed, just as today’s Jehovah’s Witnesses reject the divinity of Christ. The two parties agreed that each would write its confession on a scroll. They would then open the reliquary of Saint Euphemia, whose whole body rested in the Church of the Holy Apostles, place both scrolls in her hands, close the reliquary, pray, and after three days open it again to see what answer the venerable Saint had given.

And that is exactly what happened. Both parties agreed, the reliquary was closed, and three days later it was opened. One scroll was found at her feet and the other in her hands. From this came the troparion: “You greatly gladdened the Orthodox and put the false teachers to shame, O Euphemia, fair virgin of Christ, for you confirmed the teaching of the Fathers of the Fourth Council.” In other words, she confirmed it: “Yes, the Fathers proclaimed the dogma rightly.”

They stood frozen. How, then, can we say that our faith is some human invention, or that there are other faiths with the same things to offer? No one else has them. No one possesses what Orthodoxy possesses.

No one can present what Orthodoxy can present. These are aspects of the faith laid open to view within history and time, so that anyone passing by may look, stop, examine them, and, if he is of good will, give his assent. Pharaoh, hard-hearted as he was, saw so many miracles—miracles and plagues. Did he come to his senses? No, because he did not want to. God is not at fault, my dear ones; the disposition of man is at fault. Let me give you a simple example. Suppose I have a flame burning and hold an egg over it. What will happen to the egg? It will harden and become firm. But if I hold a candle over that same flame, what will happen? The candle will melt.

One melts, while the other sets and hardens. Who, then, is at fault? The fire? No, the nature of the thing is what makes the difference. So it is with people. Before the fire of the Godhead, some are hardened by their pride, while others soften, melt, are filled with katanyxis—compunction—and surrender themselves. God is not at fault; we are. And if we do not want God, it is because He reproves our lawless way of life. That is why we do not want Him. If the Gospel were altered so that it permitted and blessed our sins and misconduct, we would all become Christians in a fraction of a second. In any case, let me go on to present several other aspects. We Orthodox have what are called Holy Relics.

Have you ever looked into them? Ask all the learned men, all the investigators, all the scientists and naturalists of past centuries who bent over them to examine them: what conclusion did they reach? They threw up their hands. If all the examinations conducted by scholars, intellectuals, and scientists upon the relic of Saint Spyridon alone could be gathered together, a person would be overwhelmed. Yet they all went away utterly defeated and speechless. They threw up their hands. This body, which was used by the grace of the Holy Spirit to perform that tangible miracle and demonstrate…

that the Three are One and the One is Three, even in a material way, as we might put it, has remained a witness to this day. It made its journey from Nicaea to Constantinople, from Constantinople to Thessaloniki, then through Epirus and Igoumenitsa, and has been there in Corfu for about five hundred years, since the fall of the Queen of Cities. A priest loaded two relics onto a mule, hidden among straw in two sacks: the relics of Saint Theodora Augusta, the Empress, and those of Saint Spyridon. Both reached Corfu. Yet this is not the only relic in the Ionian Islands, nor the only miracle—the enduring, classic testimony that something is truly taking place here.

Indeed, we can often learn of these things even from the opposing side—from the devil himself. Listen to how the demon-possessed speak of the Saints; listen to how they speak of Saint Spyridon, Saint Gerasimos, and Saint Nektarios of Aegina, and then you will understand their worth. The demons themselves acknowledge their holiness. No one else has such relics. If the Catholics possess a few, they stole them from us. No one else in the world has relics. You know how many have been returned to us in recent times. In the Ionian Islands—Corfu, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos—which form a boundary between East and West, between light and darkness, there are five whole relics.

People do not know, and they are not interested. They know Saint Spyridon, Saint Gerasimos, and Saint Dionysios, but there are two others as well. Corfu has two relics. It has the relic of Saint Spyridon, but also that of Saint Theodora the Empress. This relic is housed in the cathedral of Corfu. Saint Spyridon is the patron saint of the city; his church is not the cathedral. The cathedral is called the Church of the Demosiana, because the city commissioned the great icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, and so it is called the Church of the Demosiana. The relic of Saint Theodora the Empress is also kept there. That makes two. And on Kefalonia there is one, the relic of Saint Gerasimos.

You will hear a great deal of commotion and many accusations against Bishop Prokopios, and so forth. All of that is false, of course. And farther south, on Zakynthos, there are two relics. One is that of Saint Dionysios, the patron saint of the city, from the Monastery of the Strophades. But there is another relic as well, that of Saint Joseph, in the village of Gaitani. If any of you is from Zakynthos, you will be able to confirm what I am saying. In the village of Gaitani, on the road out toward Saint Mavra, on the right, there is this second relic. It is the relic of an archimandrite from Crete. Thus there are five relics along this boundary line, this dividing line which, as I said earlier, lies between light and darkness.

It is not by chance that they came to be there. God must have placed them there; Christ must have placed them there, to say to the Greeks, to the Orthodox Christian people: “Take heed. Beyond this point lies darkness. These are the boundaries.” And grave mistakes are being made today. Let us pray that they do not abandon us, because everything that happens, and everything God permits, is because of our sins. We must understand this and take it deeply to heart. As far as we are able, let us remain steadfast, lest we be consumed like Sodom and Gomorrah and lest our faith be lost. For it would be better for the sun and the moon to cease to exist than for Orthodoxy to cease to exist. Today all the powers of Hades and all the servants of Satan, political and religious, have been unleashed in order to wipe out Orthodoxy. They will not wipe it out. Orthodoxy is not so easily destroyed. Yes!

Perhaps it will be covered for a time by a cloud, but it will emerge more radiant; it will teach and preach and spread throughout the whole world. It is waiting for us. This is what Christ said when the Greeks came to see Him before His Passion. When He saw them, He rejoiced, because, as I told you yesterday, He had sent them forth in earlier times through Alexander the Great to spread the Greek language. He said, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” Christ loves the Greek nation. Christ is moved by the Greek nation, by the Greek language, by everything Greek, and by our customs. All these things are illumined by God; they are holy. That is why they are under attack. The whole world is set against them. There are two states that stir the whole...

...world, one positively and the other negatively: the Jewish state and Greece. These two small states are engaged in the greatest conflict, though we do not see the knives being drawn. One has Christ, while the other stands in opposition to Him., and Christ will triumph. It is impossible for Him not to triumph. Yet it will also depend upon us—upon the way we live and upon our metanoia, our repentance. He Himself will rise and say, “Peace, be still,” and they will hide like cockroaches that scatter and disappear when the lady of the house turns on the kitchen light. In any case, these are not the only miracles or relics through which we can see the authenticity of our faith. I do not know whether I have...

...troubled you or scandalized you by saying two words: “All lies.” I was referring to what was written in the press about Saint Gerasimos and the Bishop of Kefalonia. Since the matter has come up, and since I possess evidence from these very gentlemen, allow me to tell you about it. Much has been written against Prokopios down there, just as much had been written against the Bishop of Preveza, and so forth. Quite recently there has even been a trial, because a certain performer there...

...ridicules everything by exploiting the fall of the Bishop of Preveza. Many things were said in court. Those responsible were convicted, of course. In any case, the matter is not as they presented it. His production includes a particular scene in which Prokopios is shown with axes and cleavers, cutting off the Saint’s ribs and selling them: the left ribs for fifty thousand drachmas apiece, and the right ribs for sixty thousand, and so on. You understand how blasphemous it is even for a person to imagine such things. Much has been written, as you will have read in the newspapers, especially those of you who went back to the homeland, claiming that he sold the Saint...

...piece by piece and gave the pieces away. Who buys relics? What would anyone do with them? And where are these pieces, after all, if he cut them off and sold them? I have photographed the Saint’s whole body, and I will show it to you during the slide presentation. It is all there. Yet despite everything they wrote—that the relic had been sold, cut into pieces, broken up, and no longer existed—these same people commissioned an expert examination. An official committee of three doctors was sent: Avlamis, Michas, and Antonatos. Antonatos was evidently from Kefalonia. Avlamis was the chairman of the committee that conducted the examination.

I would like to mention in passing that the chairman received a terrible shock. You may ask what caused it. He felt the Saint’s pulse, and it was beating. It took this gentleman twenty days to recover. Those scandal sheets did not report that. They did not write about it. So now, gentlemen, since the matter of the Saint has been raised, listen to the expert report. But first hear a passage from the play now being performed in Greece, which they suspended a short while ago.

The Metropolitan of Kefalonia, Prokopios, appears together with nuns from the Holy Monastery of Saint Gerasimos. They begin calling out the prices for the Saint’s sacred body. This is a scene in the play. “Five toes from the left foot: five hundred thousand drachmas,” they shout. “Twelve left ribs at fifty thousand each: that comes to six hundred thousand. Twelve right ribs at sixty thousand each: that comes to seven hundred and twenty thousand,” and so forth. Then, as the stage lights go out, the Metropolitan of Kefalonia takes up an axe and brandishes it. He raises it, and in the darkness...

...the sound of the axe is heard striking as the Saint’s sacred body is supposedly hacked into pieces. When this is described, the defense speaks and says: “It is not true that the sacred body of Saint Gerasimos in Kefalonia was cut into pieces and sold. Yet an expert examination was conducted, and it proved that pieces are missing from the Saint’s sacred body.” That is what the defense says. Listen, then, to the expert report, and you will see what the press and the dark powers fabricate around matters concerning the Church, so that you will not be easily scandalized. Here is the report of the experts.

Meanwhile, I shall read it in its own formal language. The newspaper Akropolis obtained the expert report of the doctors Georgios Avlamis, whom I mentioned to you, Panagiotis Michas, and Ioannis Antonatos, who examined the sacred body of Saint Gerasimos last Sunday. First: in the area beneath the left side of the jaw, a loss of soft tissue is observed, so that the bone of the lower jaw is visible. This is due to deterioration caused by time over the four hundred years that the holy relic of Saint Gerasimos has existed.

Consequently, nothing is missing there. Second: the little finger of the right hand is missing from its base. That is indeed missing. For the past one hundred years, it has been kept in the cathedral of Argostoli as a blessing. It has been in the cathedral for a hundred years. Third: both feet show areas of tissue loss on the soles—as though the undersides of the feet had been scraped—which were caused by the passage of time.

So there is nothing suspicious there either. Fourth: the big toe of the left foot is entirely missing. Yes, the big toe is missing. Such a thing can happen. I was once present at the exhumation of a relic, and as we drew back the earth with a hoe, the hands were crossed here upon the body. The hoe caught one of them, and it came away from the hand. We also dislodged a toe. Since the feet were lying one upon the other, the hoe caught the toe. That does not prove it was stolen or sold. I continue: on the upper surface of the right foot, close to its outer edge, an area of missing skin is observed, ten centimeters long and two centimeters wide.

Ten centimeters of skin, as though someone had stripped it away—ten centimeters long and two centimeters wide—with microscopic characteristics indicating a relatively recent detachment. In other words, it does not date from the original preservation of the relic; it appears to have been torn away at a later time. The committee adds this observation: “The impression that the detachment is relatively recent arises from comparison with a similar lesion that is clearly much older.” In other words, if the relic is four hundred years old and this piece of skin was removed a hundred years ago, would there not be a visible difference after two hundred years?

Thus it is shown to be recent. Prokopios continues in a written statement in his defense. Concerning the recent detachment of the piece ten centimeters long and two centimeters wide, he says that it was compared with another piece that had been detached four hundred years ago—and he is quite right. Therefore, even if this new piece, which appears recent, was detached a hundred years ago, Prokopios says, “I have been bishop in Kefalonia for only fourteen years.” What have you read? What have you been told? What have you heard—that Saint Gerasimos is no longer there? Saint Gerasimos is there in his entirety, completely untouched. These very people say so in writing.

These are clippings from the newspaper Akropolis. So now you understand where we stand, what kind of age we are living in, and how careful a person must be lest his faith be shaken. A great war will be waged against the clergy, both good and bad—for there are good clergy and bad clergy. Everyone should expect this war. The clergy are the bridge. They alone have the power to serve the devil with notice of eviction. And the devil is always raging, trying to leave nothing standing. Because we ourselves are not firmly rooted in the faith, we suffer as we do. Something has come to mind, and I cannot resist the temptation to tell you about it.

Since we have reached the subject of Argostoli and Saint Gerasimos, let me relate another incident as an aspect of Christianity. Some years ago, a trial was held there. Who was on trial? A monk about sixty years old. He was brought from prison, where he had been held awaiting trial for four and a half years, and taken before the criminal court. All of Argostoli had gathered there, ready to lynch him. Why? Because he was accused of abusing a nine-year-old girl. He had no one to help him—no lawyer, no witnesses, nothing.

He was a complete wreck. Lice could be seen crawling all the way up to his neck. He huddled there in a corner, while a large police presence held back the crowd to prevent them from lynching him. At last, after the proceedings had continued for some time, the moment came for him to give his defense. The presiding judge called upon him to speak, but the monk did not wish to give his explanation there. He begged the judge to see him somewhere in private. The judge said that procedure required him to make his defense before the court. The monk insisted that he would indeed speak before the court, but first he needed to explain himself privately to the judge. The judge relented, and they withdrew...

...behind a screen. Allow me to describe the man and repeat what was said. With great respect and shame, the monk lifted his garment and showed the judge that he had no male organ. When he was a child, a pig had bitten him and torn it off. You understand what happened then. I do not need to tell you the rest. We need only learn from this and be careful about the things that happen today and place us in danger.

Με το ράπισμα που έδωσε στον Άρειο, διότι τον απεκατέστησαν. Τρία αμέσως θαύματα στην Πρώτη Οικουμενική Σύνοδο, για να αποδειχθεί ότι ο Χριστός είναι από την Αγία Τριάδα και η Τριάς είναι ένα και τα ένα είναι τρία. Πώς δεν τα επιζητεί λοιπόν αυτά τα πράγματα; Δεν είναι κάτι για μας αυτό το οποίο μας υπενθυμίζει γνησιότητα; Δεν έχει οικονομηθεί διά Πνεύματος Αγίου, ώστε και από τα αισθητά να βλέπουμε ότι εδώ κάτι γίνεται; Και υπάρχει και τέταρτο θαύμα στην Πρώτη Οικουμενική, το οποίο δεν ξέρω. Ξέρω όμως το όνομα του Πατρός· το έκανε ένας Κουρβούνης στο όνομα της... Αλλά ποιο είναι το θαύμα ακριβώς, δεν το έχω διαβάσει, δεν το ξέρω. Τέσσερα θαύματα. Όταν λοιπόν υπάρχουν τέσσερα θαύματα σε μια συντροφιά, σε μια εκδήλωση, σε μια συνάντηση, τι θα πούμε τώρα; Ότι είναι ανθρώπινα πράγματα τα οποία γίνονται;

Δέκα εκατοστά δέρμα, σαν να έχει ξηλώσει ένας το δέρμα, 10 εκατοστά με 2 εκατοστά πλάτος, με χαρακτήρες μικροσκοπικούς σχετικώς προσφάτου αποσπάσεως. Δηλαδή δεν είναι από τότε που το λείψανο, φαίνεται ότι είναι αργότερα αυτό, ξεσχισμένο από εκεί πέρα. Και βάζει παρατήρηση η Επιτροπή και λέγει: «Η εντύπωση της σχετικώς προσφάτου αποσπάσεως προκύπτει από τη σύγκριση προς παρατηρουμένην ανάλογον βλάβην, η οποία είναι σαφώς πολύ προτέρα». Δηλαδή, αν αυτό το δέρμα, εφόσον το λείψανο είναι 400 ετών, είναι βγαλμένο τα εκατό αυτό το δέρμα, στα 200 χρόνια δεν θα έχει μια διαφορά;
