Summary
The lecture presents Orthodox Pascha and Christ’s Resurrection as the culmination of Christian faith and the foundation of hope beyond death. The raising of Lazarus and the empty tomb of Jesus are offered as historical witnesses that the soul survives and resurrection is real. It concludes that Christ’s empty tomb guarantees the future resurrection of humanity and urges serious study of the Gospel rather than unexamined skepticism.

I am here among you because, through this opportunity to speak together, you give me the chance to talk about something that concerns every human being.
More specifically, we are still in a season that bears the traces of the feast, a period connected with the Pascha of us Orthodox Christians. It is the culmination of our faith. I do not know whether, amid all your other pursuits—as human beings, whatever your professions or occupations may be—you have ever seriously considered the question of faith.
It is something essential for every person who comes into this world. We must understand that human existence does not end at the grave. Unfortunately, many theories circulate in our day, and many ideas are discussed, that take man only as far as the grave and then abandon him there.
We often hear that familiar saying: “Who has ever come back from there?” It is easy to say such things before the earth and the marble cover you. But when all is said and done, that is not how things truly are. I would say they are rather different.
Thank you. There must be something beyond the grave. Of course, there is much discussion today—even on television, as we have recently seen—claiming that there is nothing beyond death and that no one has gone there and returned to tell us whether anything exists. But if there is nothing, if there is no hope born of faith, man should have blown his brains out five hundred times by now. Is there any reason to live? Why live? What does a person gain? What remains for him? Let us run a slight fever for two days—37.1 degrees, not 40 or 41, just 37.1—and our legs give way, our good spirits vanish, and we forget everything: pleasures, enjoyments, everything. All because of a temperature of 37.1.
Then pneumonia strikes you, and suddenly you cannot even stand properly. Is that all there is? Is this why I run about, suffer, and wear myself out? What is the point? Why is it necessary? Is it simply so that I may eat God’s calves, God’s eggplants and okra, and consume His oxygen? That would be pointless. If in five, ten, twenty, or thirty years it is all over, then life is not worth living. Life would be unnecessary. It contains so much toil, hardship, malice, envy, and jealousy that it would not be worth it. Yet something remains: a hope. What gives a person the courage to endure all the evil surrounding him?
Nevertheless, as I say, there is much effort to drive out the thought that anything exists beyond death. But then what is the point? I lay one brick upon another—but for what? I turn two floors into five, and what comes of it? A tiny thing called cancer—I do not even know exactly what it is—can extinguish my very being within ten or twenty days. A heart condition can knock me out in a single second. What is the point? Yet matters are not like that. Deep within the subconscious, something cries out: there may be something. Even if we are not certain, there may be something. And that small “may be” gives a person tremendous courage to endure and struggle against sickness and against every enemy—internal and external, within him and around him. It is the sense that something exists beyond the grave. Those who believe are not people who simply appeared by chance along the road, with no new people ever coming into being.
We came into this world. No, this is certainly something we cannot explain, because we cannot enter into that invisible intelligence which made all these things. That is precisely why we cannot explain it. But can I, who am no expert, explain how a weapon was made? One must be a specialist to do that. Can I inspect and approve a building when I am not even an engineer? How could I know whether it was constructed according to the laws of architecture? I do not know. Can I undertake to install the electrical system here? I am not a specialist; I cannot pretend to be one. And yet man is so absurd that he steps forward and says, “Could it not all be coincidence? Did not all these things come about by chance?” Seriously?
Did all these things really come about accidentally? Were they made by chance? If so, why do no new ones appear by themselves? Why are they not made all over again? Did I make any of them? No. Did your father? No. Did his father? No. Did anyone else? No one made them, you say. Then how did they arise by chance or coincidence? I hold a watch in my hand. Did it not have a watchmaker? How could it have made itself, arranged all its parts, and now work and go ticktock? How did such a thing come to be? So many mysteries surround man. Whenever he is incapable of doing something, he readily admits, “I know nothing about architecture, electrical work, or plumbing. I do not know.” But as soon as he reaches the great questions of his own existence, he says, “Ah, I understand these things.” What do I understand? Nothing. I do not know. But I believe.
There is something else called faith. When the Apostle Paul defines faith, he says that it is “the evidence of things not seen.” In other words, I do not see them, yet through faith I have assurance of them. Faith is the white cane by which a blind man walks even though he cannot see. That is faith. Those who throw that cane away will one day fall and shatter themselves, whether they like it or not. Faith is what still sustains us. It is what a person must possess so that, where reason and knowledge can go no farther, faith may continue onward and enable him to overcome this temptation.
They say everything arose by coincidence, that nothing exists, that life reaches only as far as the grave, and all the usual things. Yet man himself is a mystery, and everything surrounding him is mysterious. You saw the winter; and now, from beneath winter and frost, spring emerges and life comes forth. Everything seemed dead. You struck a tree and it did not respond; now you strike it and it weeps with sap. How do these things happen? Who can explain them? Man sees and observes them, but cannot explain them. He knows what happens, but not how it happens. He sees the results, yet does not know how they come about. If a man were to examine even his own self, he would stand speechless and say, “My goodness, I do not even know what I myself am.”
Yet I want to explain everything else and, with one stroke of the pen, declare, “There is nothing.” That is the attitude, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” How am I speaking at this very moment? How are you hearing me? Let all the scientists in the world who study speech and acoustics come and tell us how I speak and how you hear. No one can fully explain it. They can describe the process, but they cannot reproduce its mystery. They will say, “You see, hearing works in this way; that cord over there does this,” and so forth. But if I ask, “How does it truly happen? Can you reproduce it exactly?” they cannot answer. How does this irrational bodily organ, which neither speaks nor possesses consciousness, function? How is it used? How does it produce sound, and how does one hear? How does man see? No one can answer.
With his eyes? That is not the whole truth. Have people not often passed in front of you without your seeing them, and then taken offense? They greeted you, but you did not hear them. You did not answer, so they were offended. “You were looking straight over there. Do you have something against me?” “No, I do not.” “But I passed by, greeted you, and you did not respond.” “I did not see you; I did not hear you.” You were looking, but your attention—your nous—was elsewhere. Therefore, it is not simply the eyes that see. No. The nous, the spiritual intellect, sees and hears. Are these things not mysteries? Has man ever explained how bones were formed within his mother’s womb? How did a little mass of bodily fluid become bones inside his mother? How was this whole foundation laid? Has he explained how he himself was formed there? What engineer fashioned him within his mother’s womb? Who placed those bones there? Who joined them? Who added the cartilage and everything else? Have you never looked at your teeth and wondered what they are? Who shaped them? Who made them? Who made the canine teeth, the molars, and the incisors? Who made all these things?
Nature? Does nature make such things? Does irrational nature fashion things like these? My good sir, I myself am a mystery. I am a mystery even to myself. How is all this possible? Who made the tiny openings in every strand of your hair? We know that our hairs are hollow like pieces of macaroni. What has man actually solved, that he now proposes to settle whether God exists or whether there is life beyond the grave, dismissing it all with one stroke of the pen? He accepts everything else supposedly on the basis of science. He says he accepts it through science, not through faith, because he refuses to use faith at all. Who placed the heart within you, and who set it in motion? Ticktock, ticktock—from your mother’s womb until the day you die, the heart keeps working. Who ever stops to consider this? Man has solved nothing. Think of the intestines, all those yards of them. Who opened their passages? Who set them in place? Who made all the connections within them so that they function?
Who made all these things? Who made the lungs perform all these wonders, expelling carbon dioxide and retaining oxygen? How does this happen? Who put the blood within us, and how? If man took the trouble to examine himself, he would stop making such sweeping claims. He would say, “I have not even investigated myself, and I want to go beyond myself? Let me take up this cane called faith and follow where it leads. I do not know how long I have, until some car runs me over and puts an end to me.” That is what he ought to say. But man has pride within him, imagining that he knows and comprehends everything. Why? Because he landed on the moon—he landed on the moon, yet he never came down to earth within himself to understand what he is. The man who claims to know what is happening on the moon does not know what is happening twenty-two centimeters beneath his own skin. He does not know what is happening inside himself, yet he knows what happens on the moon. Pride will not let him admit it. Pride is a terrible thing, and so he dismisses everything with one stroke of the pen.
Today everything centers on the question of Christ, the Resurrection, and life beyond the grave—on all those things that are dismissed with one stroke of the pen. “No one has gone there,” they say, “and no one has returned from there.” Yet surely they have heard of Lazarus; and if they have not, they can read about him later. Did Lazarus not return from there? How can anyone deny it? Go to Constantinople and see his tomb, and see whether you find him inside it. Is the whole body of Lazarus still there to this day? There is a church bearing his name. Go to Cyprus. The whole of Cyprus bears the mark of Lazarus, for after he was raised from the dead, Lazarus lived another thirty years. He became bishop of Kition. Read the history. You read about Pausanias, Aristotle, and Plato, who lived many centuries before Christ, and you do not reject them. Why, then, do you reject this more recent witness?
You do not reject any of the others. Would you reject the Acropolis? Would you reject the Parthenon? How could you? Would you reject Mystras? How could you reject it? These monuments themselves speak. So when you go there and stand at Lazarus’s tomb, what will you say? “He did not go there and return? There was no Resurrection?” There is the man whose existence you demanded as proof. And then you reject the risen Jesus. You see, all other subjects do not trouble the devil. But the questions of faith, the soul, and the Resurrection—these trouble him. Once you enter his territory, an uprising begins. What will you reject? Everything. You accept everything else, because in order to reject one truth, man will believe 999 lies.
It is easy. The unbeliever, who is wrongly called a man without faith, should really be called extremely credulous. He believes every lie and every theory simply to reject one truth: that Christ will come, that there is a Resurrection beyond the grave, and that man will live. The soul does not die. The soul is like a drop of oil: wherever I pour it, it remains upon the surface. It may be immersed in the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, or the Pacific—wherever you please—yet it will still rise and remain on top. Man has a material aspect, but he is also spirit. Man is not matter alone; he is spirit as well. As I told you, I am speaking very rapidly. How am I speaking? I do not know what I shall say next. People claim that man is like magnetic tape: the tape unwinds from one side, as in a tape recorder, while another tape records it on the other side. Can you seriously say such things?
Is that really how it is? Is there no one else within us? Is there nothing within me, and nothing within you? Is it as you say? At this moment, I am making a recording.
This is magnetic tape. When we play it afterward, we will hear exactly what I said. The recording is faithful. But you and I are different. If you also have only magnetic tape within you, then when you go outside, could you not say that Panagopoulos spoke against the President of the Republic, against the Archbishop, and against the Chief of the General Staff? Could you say that? Of course you could. But how could you insert such things? If you go outside, you ought to repeat exactly what I said. Yet you can cut the tape and add a lie of your own. Can you do that or not? Who is it within you that cuts and edits the tape and inserts something else? If man were merely material, he would have to reproduce exactly what I say. That is how a recording works. You could go outside and claim, “Indeed, Panagopoulos insulted the President of the Republic.” Someone might answer, “What are you talking about? I was there.”
You can say that, even though I spoke well of him. You can say it. Who is it that intervenes, cuts the tape, and says something different? Human beings, then, are not recording tapes; they are not merely material things. The human person is a mystery. He is something whose true nature he has not yet grasped. He ought to marvel at the One who made him and acknowledge Him, even if he cannot see Him with his physical eyes; he should see Him with his spiritual eyes. For there are two kinds of eyes. We do not see only with our physical eyes. We see people who harbor malice within themselves. Someone says, “Ah, I can see him. He has gone to Australia now.” He sees him there and describes everything as though the man were standing before him. Through his malice, by a twisted path, he sees him there. These things are mysteries. And yet Christ came into the world, and we are still living under the influence of these holy days and all the events surrounding them—but we stopped at nothing more than roasting the lamb.
We came only to eat and drink and to receive our holiday gift. We spoke of nothing beyond that, and most people did not even consider what this event means, or what Pascha is. “Many years! Christ is risen!” Seriously? Is that all it is? Is there nothing more? And what position did you and I take toward Pascha? What did we do? We are now in the wake of Pascha. What did we do? What did we say at Pascha? Pascha—the word is Hebrew. Pascha means exodus. Pascha means crossing over. Pascha means passage. Pascha did not begin when Christ came into the world. Pascha dates back 1,450 years before Christ. It is connected with the exodus of the Hebrews from Egypt, when God led them through the sea. Fundamentally, it is connected with the lamb they slaughtered at that time.
They marked the doorposts of their houses with its blood, if you remember this from school. The angel passed through and slew all the firstborn of the Egyptians; but wherever there was blood from that lamb which God had commanded them to take, the angel did not enter the house, because he found blood marked on both sides and above. That is where Pascha is found. That is the origin of the Pascha we now have in the person of Jesus. Just as they slaughtered the lamb and were saved and preserved through its blood, so the Lamb, the Son of God, was slaughtered, and by His blood He cleanses us and keeps us safe—most especially, He safeguards our souls. Pay close attention to this. Let us not suppose that Pascha was merely taking the lamb for the spit and...
another one besides, bringing out our fine wine and gathering our friends, holding our feast, putting on our best clothes, and so forth. Is that Pascha? That is a mistake. Pascha means exodus. God took them away from Pharaoh and led them into the Promised Land. But during these days, did we leave Pharaoh—the spiritual Pharaoh? Did we cleanse ourselves? Did we escape from the hands of Satan and pass over into a new life? That did not happen. We stopped at the material side and did nothing spiritually. Indeed, we talked, and many probably argued that all this is false, that Christ did not rise because, for example, Christ never actually died. How many claims circulate about the words we proclaim, “Christ is risen!” But if you do not believe that He died, then from what did He rise? You say, “Many years,” but on what basis? How can you offer those greetings? On the basis of Pascha?
Pascha gives you the occasion to say, “Many years.” But why do you say it? It must therefore commemorate an event, a decisive turning point. How, then, can you refuse to believe it and reject it? They say that Jesus only appeared to be dead and was later revived. They say that Christ was never buried.
They say He was stolen away, and a thousand other things besides. And these claims are discussed by Orthodox Christians who celebrated Pascha. Thousands upon thousands celebrated Pascha, but they celebrated it for their own convenience, since they rejected its very truth. In other words, they took everything that belonged to John and rejected John himself. A person therefore needs to look deeply into these matters and truly reflect: What are these things that happen around me every year? What are these events that hold the whole world together? Who is this person with such power that, through twelve barefoot men, He overturned the whole world? There are young men and women today who often say, “I do not like it.” For example, I once had a conversation that I will relate to you. There were two university students. A religious discussion began, and both of them broke in with one voice.
“Do you not think these things are fairy tales? The year 1980 cannot tolerate such fairy tales about Jesus and the Resurrection of Jesus.” A passerby said to them, “The very fact that you say ‘1980’ is enough to expose you as inconsistent and ridiculous. What is this ‘1980’ that you mention?” “It is the year.” “From what point are you counting? You are confessing Christ at this very moment. From what point are you counting, foolish man, while pretending to be educated? From the founding of Rome? From the creation of the world? Without even realizing it, you are counting from the crucified Jesus Christ. The year 1980 takes Christ as its starting point.”
So we spoke. People who have never bent down to study, never read, and never examined the matter pour empty words into the air: “There is nothing; nothing happened; no, no, no.” My dear man, everything stands or falls on the question of the human person, on the Resurrection of Jesus, and on the divinity of Jesus. If Christ rose, will we not also rise? And so I repeat and return to where I began: if He did not rise, we might as well blow our brains out today. We have no need of pleasure. What is pleasure? A carob pod. What material pleasure do you want? Sex? After the enjoyment, you spit upon yourself. Is that not so? You spit upon the pleasure, if that is all there is.
And what comes afterward? That is not all; there is something beyond it and something behind it. If I am not going to live beyond my death, if I am not going to rise again, then there is no reason for me to live today, because every pleasure is like a carob pod. It is sweet at first, as when you chew a carob pod, and then you spit it out. All pleasures are like that. Do you want food? Do you want drink? How good can they be? If you eat or drink too much, you are sick for two days. What, then, is all this? Is that all there is? You suffer stomach pain and a thousand other ailments of the stomach. No, no—is this the only life there is? It is not. There is life beyond the grave as well. My dear friends, the graves will open one day, even if they place us within them. Just as the tomb of Jesus opened, so ours will open. Let me make a distinction that you should keep in mind.
Someday you may need to know how to answer. There are many religions in the world. Many claim that they possess the truth, that theirs alone is true and all the others are not. There are Muslims, Buddhists, Catholics, Protestants, Jehovah’s Witnesses, religious leaders, gurus, and the like. They are all mistaken. The fundamental witness proving the truth of the faith and the reality it proclaims is the empty tomb of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem. If we go to the Muslims, our neighbors here, and say, “You believe Muhammad is the prophet; where is he?” He is in Mecca. If we go to visit his tomb, we will find him inside it. Hades has held him there.
Muhammad is in his tomb. Let us go farther and find the Buddha: the Buddha is in his tomb; Hades has held him there. Let us go and find Luther: he is in his tomb. Let us go and find the popes: they are in their tombs. Let us go and find Russell: he is in his tomb. Let us go and find Zoroaster: he is in his tomb. But let us go to find Jesus the Crucified, the Nazarene—not a trace of Him is there. From this we can understand that things do not end at the grave. “As I have risen, so those who believe in Me will rise.” Whether people believe it or not, that is the truth. We are not concerned with what the world says. “If these should keep silent, the stones would cry out.” The very stones, He says, will speak. You will come here, and the stones themselves will tell you, “My Master has risen.” And since my leader has the power to rise, how could I not also rise?
The empty tomb of Jesus, then, is a guarantee that there is life beyond the grave. Yet although this is a real event, much mud has been thrown upon it. People stop there and tell you, “There is nothing. Let us have a good time now; let us celebrate, indulge our flesh, and enjoy the world, because there is nothing beyond it. We die, and tomorrow we vanish into obscurity.” That is not true. And the fact that it is true can be seen from the slander and warfare directed against this truth. For the devil is clever. He does not attack anything worthless; he attacks what is good. He attacks whatever harms his purposes. If we were going to war tomorrow, what would we strike? Would we strike the poplars and...
the pine trees? We would strike the bridges and try to cut them off. Where would we go to attack? Would we simply strike one thing and then another? No, we would seek to destroy the bridges. Faith in Jesus is the bridge of man’s salvation. That is why, through money, all the means of communication, and every other means, the devil seeks to remove this faith from our midst. Money was paid to betray and crucify Christ; and an equally serious amount—indeed, even more—was paid to silence the proclamation of the Resurrection. Have you ever read the texts? When we speak about a person, we look at his works, read his writings, and study his life.
We cannot discuss these matters out of thin air without having read about them. We would be foolish debaters, not serious ones, both in our own eyes and in the eyes of those who hear us. The texts speak to us about this matter, and especially about the Resurrection, which the enemy wants to erase so that our existence will end at the grave, with nothing beyond it. It is written in the Gospel. It tells us that money was paid so the Resurrection would be slandered: “We will pay,” they said. “If you are called to account, we will satisfy the authorities and keep you out of trouble. You will not be accused.” And they paid them. But is that all the Gospel says? There is another fine, fundamental, and classic passage which you should keep in mind. I will cite it specifically. I do not know how many of you ever take the Gospel into your hands, because Satan does not allow us to take it up. He permits us to read everything else—scientific works...
technical works, books on nature and human life, encyclopedias. But Satan does not want a person to take the Gospel into his hands. Even if someone has one at home, when you ask for it he sometimes does not know where it is. The devil does not mind a person learning all those other things; he only wants him to remain ignorant of what this little book says—a book to which nothing can be added and from which nothing can be taken away, because it is the work of God. And the works of God need no additions, no later corrections, and no innovations. In the twenty-seventh chapter of Matthew, it says that on the following day, the Sabbath, when not even a leaf was permitted to stir, the pangs of conscience and fear nevertheless compelled the chief priests and the scribes to act.
They went to Pilate, although they were not supposed to go anywhere until the sun had set on the Sabbath. Yet they broke their own law, went to Pilate, and said, “Sir, we remember that while He was still alive, that deceiver said...” That is why they came: they had remembered something—that deceiver, Christ. But if He is merely a deceiver, why are you afraid of Him? If He is merely a deceiver, why do you fear Him? But if He is God, where do you think you are going? Human beings are always inconsistent. “We remember that while He was still alive, that deceiver said...” They say that He is no longer alive, that He has died. They themselves now confess it. “While He was still alive”—therefore He has died, by their own admission. And what had He said? “After three days I will rise.”
“What do you want from me?” Pilate asks. “Give the order for the tomb to be secured, so that they do not come and steal Him away and make the last deception worse than the first.” So there is a tomb, is there not? You now have Him in the tomb, and you are asking me to give you soldiers to secure it. The deceiver who was alive is no longer alive. They have already said that He died. They have already said that He is in the tomb, and Pilate’s answer says the same thing.
He died, He was buried, and the tomb was secured. How, then, was He stolen? They themselves say all this. How can you accept everything else, throw away these truths, and tell me, “He did not die, He was not buried, He did not rise; He was stolen”? And if He was stolen, why were the burial linens found there, lying in place? What does that prove? That He was not stolen. For if He had been stolen, they would have taken the linens as well. I do not know whether you have ever considered what I am telling you. Christ was buried according to the Jewish custom. Do you know what that custom was and still is? When a Jew dies, others anoint his entire body with an adhesive substance like our resin—what we call rosin—made from myrrh and aloes. You have heard that Joseph and Nicodemus took about a hundred pounds of myrrh and aloes. They requested His body, wrapped Him in clean linen, prepared Him, and buried Him. When myrrh and aloes are processed, besides the fragrance they give off, they leave a resin-like residue. The Jewish dead are anointed with this and then folded and bound tightly in linen, like a swaddled infant. Upon the human body, this becomes as hard as granite. It becomes an adhesive, solid as granite.
Then, after three days, they went and found the tomb—and they found the linens lying there. How could the thieves have removed the linens, and why would they have done so? If you and I intended to steal a body, we would go at night. According to the tradition of Karizantis, the Jews sent five hundred soldiers in addition to the Roman guard already there. They sent five hundred soldiers to the tomb.
Those men fell asleep; all of them sank into a stupor. Afterward they said, “While we were sleeping, His disciples stole Him.” We do not accept testimony from sleeping witnesses. If they were asleep, they did not know what happened—even if we grant that part of their story. If you and I were going to steal a body, what would we do? The two of us would take a blanket, throw the body onto it, lift the blanket onto our shoulders, and leave. Or we would take a large sack, put the body inside, sling it over our shoulders, and go. Why would they leave the linen there? Why would they remove it—and the sudarium, the cloth that covered His face?
Why was the cloth that bound His head found, as it says, “wrapped together in a place by itself”? How did that happen? Is that what thieves do? This is why I repeat once more: “If these should keep silent, the stones would cry out.” Everything has been thrown into confusion over the Resurrection of Jesus, because the Resurrection of Jesus, together with His divinity, is Satan’s Waterloo—his decisive defeat. For if Christ is not God, and if Christ did not rise, then there is nothing. Satan can say, “We have them all here, and we are holding them.” But Christ is God, and He did rise. And these things are, of course, demonstrated by the whole life of Christ, because someone who opens graves cannot be merely a man.
Someone who takes a little spittle, spits on the ground, makes clay, puts it on the eye, and creates an eye cannot be merely a man. Someone who knows from afar what is happening—that Lazarus has died—and says, “Let us go and awaken him,” cannot be merely a man. Someone who walks upon the sea cannot be merely a man. Someone who drives out demons cannot be merely a man, nor can he be a demon, because one demon does not cast out another. He must be something more. The very life of Jesus shows that He is also God. He is the God-Man. He is not man alone, for man could not reach God; nor is He God alone, for human beings could not comprehend Him. He is like a pencil with both blue and red: God and man, so that He may unite man with God—not God with man, but man with God. For, as one Father of our Church says, God is never hostile toward man. God always...
God always looks upon man. It is man who turns his back on God; man does not want God. And we ourselves do not want Him now. Even if we do want Him, we want Him only within limits, up to the point where we say: “Christ, You are forbidden to have an opinion about everything. You will not tell me how many children I shall have. You will not tell me what I shall eat on Wednesday and Friday. You will not tell me how much money I shall take from the bank or what I shall build. I forbid it. Of course, I will light a candle, come to Christ, offer my good wishes, and give half of my thirteenth salary—but no further.” Even Christians today keep Christ within limits. Do you know that? People do not want Christ because He reproves their lawless way of life. That is why they do not want Him. It is the same with us when a serious person comes—a superior, a friend, or a grandmother of upright character. Out of respect for their moral standing, we restrain ourselves, and then we want to leave the house quickly so that we can go off and do whatever foolish things we please.
The same thing happens with Christ. People do not want Christ. That is why there is all this uproar. That is why they try to get rid of Him—to strip Him of all seriousness and worth, so that He cannot influence human life beyond this material, animal existence, the sort of life lived by beasts, birds, fish, and the rest. A person must discern the war the devil is waging to prevent any discussion of the divinity of Jesus. “Christ ate,” they say. As man, He ate. But why do you speak to me only of His eating? Why speak only of His weeping, His asking questions, and so forth? Why do you not speak of the other things—how He opened graves, drove out demons, and created eyes, as I said? Why do you not ask about those things? The one reveals His humanity, but the other reveals His divinity. There is a Father of the Church...
He was a disciple of the divinely inspired John Chrysostom, named Proclus, Archbishop of Constantinople. He gave a concise definition of the divinity and humanity of Jesus in one and the same person. He says: “I behold the miracles He performs, and I proclaim His divinity. I behold His sufferings, and I do not deny His humanity.” The miracles are those I have spoken of. His eating, sleeping, suffering anguish, and shedding tears are proofs of His human nature. Proclus therefore says: “I behold the miracles and proclaim His divinity.” He is God. “I behold His sufferings and do not deny His humanity.” Nor can I say that He was not also man. He was man as well. He died, was buried, and rose again. The Jews themselves say so.
Those who crucified Him said it in the very words I have just quoted, besides all the other evidence. I have simply taken, in summary, one passage from the Gospel itself, from their own words. They say, “We remember that this deceiver said, while He was still alive”—therefore He died. “Give orders for us to secure the tomb”—therefore you have buried Him. They secured the tomb; He was gone—therefore He rose. It is proved by their own texts and their own words. And why do I need other witnesses, when the very accusers who condemn Him themselves confess that He died and was buried? There is also another classic proof, if only people could understand it and add it to the rest. But we neither attend Church nor pay attention. Which of us went to the Taking Down from the Cross? Who went? A person goes to the grave and funeral of his mother, brother, father, and so forth, and rightly so. But why does he not go to the funeral of his God? Why does he not go? Do you know what is said there?
Christ died. But Christ died in the reverse order; He did not die in the order in which an ordinary person dies. Do you know how a person dies? Have you ever watched someone die, or are you afraid of the dead? Fear the living; do not fear the dead. How does a person die? He gives up his spirit, and then his head falls. The shutters come down and close, never to open again. We take a mirror and hold it before him to see: Is he breathing? Is there any breath, as we say? He has died. But how did Christ die? Have you read the texts? “And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” We give up the spirit—or rather, it is taken from us. But He gave it up, because He is God: He lays down His soul and takes it up whenever He wills. “And bowing His head...”
“He gave up His spirit.” In other words: “I am dying now; I Myself lay down My life.” Many people think that the Jews crucified Christ. That description is not correct. Who crucified Him? His love for mankind crucified Him. The Jews did not crucify Him; His love did. Have you never heard, “As the Lord comes to His voluntary Passion”? Have we explained what “voluntary” means? It means willingly. He Himself willed it; He came and surrendered Himself, and He was crucified through their malice. If He had not willed it, if He had not loved mankind, He would not have come. There was a committed and influential communist, an opponent of Christ. He said to me, speaking of our Christ, “The Jews caught that rascal and crucified Him. What else could He do?”
I said to him, “How do you know that?” “I see it there in the Gospel,” he told me, “which I read.” “Do you read it in order to believe it?” I asked. “To believe it?” “No,” he said, “I read it to find fault with it.” Such hostility toward Christ! “Tell me,” I said, “does not the Gospel itself say that when Christ declared that He is God, they tried to throw Him down from the brow of a hill—a precipice that remains there to this day?” “Yes, it says that.” “Does it not also say that He passed through their midst? He escaped from among them, they did not recognize Him, and they could do nothing to Him. Could He not have escaped from this situation too? Answer me. Why are you staring at me? Therefore, since He did not use His divine power to escape them, but surrendered Himself, they did not truly force Him onto the Cross. His love brought Him there.”
During the years of the occupation, let me tell you a personal story to give you a little rest. I found myself in the mountainous region of Aigialeia and was staying with an elder, a wise and serious man who was a butcher. Someone—a young man, as the story went—had taken advantage of him. He had taken some sheep and some money, and the young man had made a fool of the elder. As we sat there in the corner, I said to him, “My dear Mr. Papagiannis, you were an intelligent man. How did this happen? How did that young fellow take advantage of you?” He replied, “He did not take advantage of me. My sense of honor did. My sense of honor was what left me vulnerable, not that young man.” That is the point.
Christ’s loving sense of honor raised Him upon the Cross. They were merely instruments of Satan’s malice, seeking to remove Him because they saw Him only as a righteous man. For if Satan himself had seen Him unmistakably as God, the devil would never have put his hand into that fire. This is why the divinely inspired John Chrysostom says to him: “You seized what you could see—a man—and you lost your dominion through what you could not see: the divinity of that man.” For the One clothed outwardly in humanity had God within, and He confounded you completely. His power confounded you. But we do not pay attention to these things. We have not taken up the texts in order to see exactly how matters stand. So, as I said and now repeat, He died in the reverse order, proving that He could have...
escaped death, but accepted it voluntarily: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed.” He went willingly and surrendered Himself. Human malice did not overpower Him. There is one more thing I wanted to mention, since this subject has come up. When Judas went at night to seize Christ—or rather, to betray Him—it was night. He knew where Christ went in the evenings to pray: across from the Mount of Olives, in the garden that remains there to this day and is in Catholic hands. Christ saw them in the distance as they came out through the Golden Gate. There is a gate in the fortress of the Temple of Solomon called the Golden Gate. He said, “Behold, they are coming. Prepare yourselves for the temptation.” And they came.
They reached the place where Christ was. He rose from prayer and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” They answered, “We seek Jesus.” He said, “I am He.” At the words “I am He,” they all fell backward, as though they might be killed. Like cabbages struck down by frost, they all fell backward as soon as He spoke. They fell. “Get up,” He said. “Come here. Whom do you seek?” “Jesus,” they replied. “I am He. Let these men go. Let the others go. Is it not Me you seek? Let the disciples depart.” He therefore had the power to make them fall backward, unable even to approach Him. How could a man made of earth approach the divinity?
Here again, then, He shows that He willingly comes out of love to His voluntary Passion for the sake of mankind. He surrenders Himself, is crucified, is buried, and descends even into the innermost chambers of Hades. He is received as a guest there, as we say on Great Friday: “He is received in a small lodging, whom children bless, priests praise, and peoples exalt above all forever.” He went down and preached there. Human souls had gone to Hades; He went and preached to them, and those who received Him He made alive. Why do we say, “Christ is risen”? What does “Christ is risen” proclaim? “Trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life.” Upon whom, then, did He bestow life if there is nothing beyond the grave and no life beyond the grave? Upon whom? And to whom did He preach, if not to the spirits in prison?
If there is nothing, if we pass into nonexistence as we imagine, then there is nothing beyond the grave. Yet all these texts, everything we claim to believe when we offer Paschal greetings or say, “Christ is risen,” expose our contradiction, because they say exactly the opposite. We have failed to pay attention; we accept whatever is served to us by the various enemies of Christ, of the Resurrection, and of our own souls. You may ask, “Is the matter really so serious?” I have told you that it is. For if our existence extends only as far as the grave, then there is no reason for us to live. What consoles us and gives us hope and strength is that our existence does not end when we are laid in the grave. It does not end. Things will change. We shall return to being, whether we believe it or not. None of us will be consulted.
God will not say to us, “Mr. So-and-so, what do you think? Mr. Panagopoulos, what do you think? Madam So-and-so, what is your opinion?” Nothing of the sort. There are as many opinions as there are people. He did not ask anyone before creating us, nor will He ask anyone before creating us anew. Whether a person believes that he will rise or not, why then does he go to Church? Even this year, people were seen attending the funeral of Christ and following the Epitaphios while rejecting the Resurrection. Why, then, do you go to the Epitaphios? What do you want with someone who has no power, who is merely an ordinary man, only the son of Mary and not also the Son of God? Where are you going? “Well, that is the Church’s custom.” Yes, but the Church is teaching you something.
What does the Church say? I urge you to see how inconsistent we are. When the Epitaphios returns from the procession and enters the church, there is still a short service. As soon as everyone has come inside, the right chanter goes up, opens the book, and reads a prophecy from the Prophet Ezekiel, chapter 37, verses 1 through 14. Do you know what it says? What is it about? We shall become human beings again. That is what it proclaims: we shall be human beings once more. We shall receive our bones, our skeletal frame. Sinews will be joined to them, like the braces and beams of a structure.
These are the sinews within the human body. When a person’s sinews fail, he can do nothing. Flesh will be added, then skin, then spirit, and human beings will rise again. God said it; the Church proclaims it. Many of us now carry a small Holy Week prayer book in church; some carry another service book, others a compendium. Open it calmly when you return home at midday. Look through the events of Great Friday until you reach the point where the Epitaphios returns, and read Ezekiel’s prophecy. See what it says about how we shall rise. Thank you. Why did God have this written six hundred years before Christ? To steal our wallets? To take away our wives?
To take away our husbands? What could He want to take from us? Why did He have it written—to deceive us? Why? And these gentlemen, the enemies of Christ, will not erase it. They have not erased it, and Christ will not allow them to erase it. The testimony will remain there as a crushing reply to us: “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures,” because you do not read. As I said earlier, man knows what is happening on the moon, yet he does not know what is happening twenty-two centimeters inside himself, in his inner being. We are to blame because, through ignorance and indifference, we give room for things to be discussed, spoken, heard, and repeated even by us—things utterly opposed to our own good, both temporal and eternal. Very well, many people...
Many people blaspheme Christ. But if you blaspheme Him, do you not believe in Him? You are the one committing blasphemy. Do you know what that uncle of mine used to say when I spoke with him and tried somehow to help him understand? I said, “You do not believe in Christ, you do not believe in the Most Holy Theotokos, you do not believe in the Cross, and you do not believe in these things. Why, then, do you blaspheme them? How can you? You are therefore acknowledging that they are real.” “Aha!” he said. “Do you take me for such a fool that I would blaspheme persons who do not exist?” Do you hear the answer he gave me? So you immediately condemn yourself. For if you blaspheme Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Cross, and the other realities that have existed, you cannot at the same time claim not to acknowledge them. If you reject them, you will be guilty twice over—both intellectually and morally. Our own words will judge us.
These are fundamental matters. Alongside all his other education—general and technical training, which he needs in order to earn his daily bread, put a roof over his head, have clothes to wear, and provide for his home and family—a person must also include this spiritual dimension. You cannot treat your soul, my friend, like some mangy cat and toss it aside. The soul... There was once an American who had come to a village and bought a red horse. He would spend two hours every day grooming and tending to it. But he never went to Church. So one day the priest passed by. “Well, Mr. Nikos,” he said, “every day I see you taking such good care of it...
...of the roan”—that was what they called the red horse in his language. “Well done, well done. But what are you doing for your soul? How are you caring for it?” “Oh, now you are talking about the soul!” He could see the horse, but he could not see his own soul. The man could not see his own soul. When a person falls so low that he takes no interest in that part of himself which endures beyond the grave... People show such foresight in trying to acquire things that will not lose their value. The Jews, for example, say, “Buy gold, not apartments—gold.” And if we have a little money, we look for some stable currency in which to invest it—the dollar, the mark, or whatever else...
...we can buy, so that our savings will be secure. If only we did the same for our immortal soul! But the soul has been buried from our awareness, and a person no longer knows whether he even has one. He cannot discern it either within himself or in those closest to him. Fathers and mothers are beside themselves if their daughter comes home at midday with her blouse bloodstained or her new dress dirty. But if she comes home morally corrupted, they do not even notice. They see her as decoration, as an object, as someone destined for death. But what, after all, is this soul? Job says to the Lord: “What am I, O God, that You pursue me even as I am dying for You?” Just think, then, what you truly are. No economist is capable of taking pencil in hand...
...and telling us how much the human soul is worth. Christ, the One who created it, said: “If you gain the whole world but lose your soul, what does it profit you?” All these other things will remain here. Whatever else you may become in this world, if you become Christians, you have succeeded. Do you want to become another Onassis? Even his name no longer exists today. You know that, in reality, the Onassis name no longer continues. His son, who might have succeeded him, died before he did. That is the real question: whatever a person may become and however far he may rise, if he loses his soul, he will...

Σου έβαλε μία πνευμονία, να ότι δεν στέκεσαι καλά. Αυτό ήταν όλο. Γι’ αυτό τρέχω; Γι’ αυτό βασανίζομαι; Γι’ αυτό κουράζομαι; Ποιος ο λόγος; Τι χρειάζεται; Να φάω τα μοσχάρια του Θεού, να φάω τις μελιτζάνες και τις μπάμιες του Θεού και να του αφαιρώ το οξυγόνο; Είναι περιττό. Εάν είναι έτοιμοι σε 5, σε 10, σε 20, 30 χρόνια, ζήνει το πανί. Δεν χρειάζεται η ζωή. Έχει τόσο κόπο, έχει τόσο μόχθο, τόση κακία, τόσο φθόνο, τόση ζήλια, που δεν χρειάζεται η ζωή. Αλλά κάτι μένει πίσω. Μια ελπίδα. Τι είναι που κάνει κουράγιο στον άνθρωπο, ώστε να αντέξει όλη αυτή την κακία η οποία υπάρχει γύρω του;
Ήρθαμε εις τον κόσμο. Όχι. Είναι κάτι βέβαια που δεν μπορούμε να το ερμηνεύσουμε, γιατί δεν μπορούμε να μπούμε μέσα στον νουν αυτόν, τον αόρατον, που έφτιαξε αυτά τα πράγματα, και γι’ αυτό ακριβώς δεν μπορούμε να το ερμηνεύσουμε. Μα είναι πως εγώ μπορώ να ερμηνεύσω, που δεν είμαι ο ειδικός, πώς έγινε ένα όπλο; Πρέπει να είναι ο ειδικός για να μπορέσει. Μπορώ εγώ να πάω να παραλάβω ένα οικοδόμημα, ο οποίος δεν είμαι καν μηχανικός; Τι μπορώ να ξέρω αν έγινε με βάση τους νόμους της τεκτονικής; Δεν ξέρω. Μπορώ να καταπιαστώ να εγκαταστήσω μια ηλεκτρική εδώ πέρα εγκατάσταση; Δεν είμαι ο ειδικός, δεν μπορεί να είμαι ειδικός. Και εντούτοις όμως ο άνθρωπος είναι τόσο αστείος, που μπαίνει μέσα και λέει: «Αχ, δεν είναι σύμπτωση; Τυχαία έγιναν όλα αυτά τα πράγματα». Σοβαρά;
Με τα μάτια του; Λάθος. Πολλές φορές δεν πέρασαν άνθρωποι μπροστά σας και δεν τους είδατε; Και παρεξηγηθήκατε. Δεν σας καλημέρισαν και δεν τους ακούσατε. Και δεν απαντήσατε και παρεξηγηθήκατε. «Ε, βλέπετε προς τα εκεί, έχετε τίποτα μαζί μου;» «Όχι, δεν έχω». «Μα πέρασα, σας καλημέρισα και δεν...» «Δεν σας είδα, δεν σας άκουσα». Κοιτάγατε, προσέχατε. Είχατε τον νου σας κάπου αλλού. Άρα δεν βλέπεις με τα μάτια. Όχι. Νους ορά και νους ακούει. Δεν είναι μυστήρια πράγματα αυτά; Εξήγησε ποτέ ο άνθρωπος πώς έγιναν κόκκαλα μέσα στην κοιλιά της μάνας του; Πώς μια μύξα έγινε κόκκαλα μέσα στην κοιλιά της μάνας του; Πώς έγινε αυτή η θεμελίωση; Εξήγησε τον εαυτό του πώς έγινε μέσα; Ποιος μηχανικός τον έφτιαξε μες στην κοιλιά της μάνας; Ποιος έβαλε τα κόκκαλα αυτά; Ποιος τα ένωσε; Ποιος έβαλε τους χόνδρους και λοιπά; Δεν είδες ποτέ τα δόντια σου να δεις τι είναι; Ποιος τα χάραξε; Ποιος τα έφτιαξε; Ποιος έφτιαξε κυνόδοντες; Ποιος έφτιαξε τραπεζίτες; Ποιος έφτιαξε τους κόπτες; Ποιος έφτιαξε αυτά τα πράγματα;
Η φύση; Φτιάχνει τέτοια πράγματα η φύση; Η άλογος φύση φτιάχνει τέτοια πράγματα; Είμαι, κύριε, εγώ ο ίδιος μυστήριο. Στον ίδιο είμαι μυστήριο. Πώς; Ποιος τρύπησε τα μαλλιά σας; Ξέρω ότι τα μαλλιά μας είναι τρύπια σαν μακαρόνια. Τι έλυσε ο άνθρωπος που θέλει να λύσει αν υπάρχει Θεός, αν υπάρχει ζωή πέραν του τάφου, και να απορρίψει με μια μονοκοντυλιά; Όλα τα άλλα, με βάση δήθεν την επιστήμη, θα παραδέχεται. Όχι με την πίστη, με την επιστήμη του θα παραδέχεται. Την πίστη δεν θέλει να τη χρησιμοποιεί καθόλου. Ποιος σου έβαλε την καρδιά και ποιος της έβαλε μπρος να δουλεύει; Τικ-τακ, τικ-τακ, από την κοιλιά της μάνας μέχρι που θα πεθάνει. Θα δουλεύει η καρδιά. Ποιος το σκέφτεται ποτέ αυτό το πράγμα; Δεν έχει λύσει τίποτα. Για βάλε τα έντερα, τόσα μέτρα έντερα. Ποιος τα τρύπησε; Ποιος τα θεμελίωσε; Ποιος έκανε τις συγκολλήσεις μέσα και δουλεύουν;
Στήνεται το παν σήμερα γύρω από το θέμα του Χριστού, γύρω από το θέμα της Αναστάσεως, γύρω από το θέμα της ζωής πέραν του τάφου και όλα αυτά τα πράγματα, τα οποία απορρίπτονται με μια μονοκοντυλιά, αυτά όλα. «Δεν πήγε», λέει, «κανένας από εκεί και δεν γύρισε κανένας από εκεί». Λένε κανέναν έξυπνον Λάζαρο και, αν δεν λένε, θα είναι παρακάτω. Ο Λάζαρος δεν ήρθε από εκεί; Μα είναι δυνατόν; Πήγαινε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη να δεις τον τάφο του και να τον βρεις μέσα. Είναι ολόσωμος ο Λάζαρος μέχρι σήμερα; Υπάρχει φερώνυμος ναός. Πήγαινε στην Κύπρο. Ολόκληρη η Κύπρος φυτευμένη από Λάζαρο, διότι ο Λάζαρος έζησε μετά την Ανάστασή του 30 χρόνια. Έγινε επίσκοπος Κιτίων. Διάβασε την ιστορία. Πώς διαβάζεις για τον Παυσανία, για τον Αριστοτέλη, για τον Πλάτωνα, που είναι χιλιάδες χρόνια π.Χ., και νεότερον δεν το απορρίπτεις; Γιατί αυτόν τον απορρίπτεις;
Εύκολο. Ο άπιστος, που λέγεται κακώς άπιστος, πρέπει να λέγεται λίαν εύπιστος. Πιστεύει όλα τα ψέματα και όλες τις θεωρίες. Να απορρίψει μίαν αλήθεια: ότι ο Χριστός θα έρθει, ότι υπάρχει Ανάσταση στο τέλος του τάφου και ότι ο άνθρωπος θα ζήσει. Δεν πεθαίνει η ψυχή. Η ψυχή είναι σαν μια σταλαγματιά λάδι, που αν τη ρίξω οπουδήποτε, ενώ αυτή στέκεται πάνω από πάνω, βρέχεται στον Ατλαντικό, στον Ινδικό, στον Ειρηνικό, βρέχεται όπου θέλει, αυτή θα στέκεται από πάνω πάντως. Έχει την ύλη του ανθρώπου. Είναι πνεύμα ο άνθρωπος. Δεν είναι μόνον ύλη ο άνθρωπος, είναι και πνεύμα. Ομιλώ, όπως σας είπα, γρηγορότατα. Πώς ομιλώ; Τι θα πω στη συνέχεια, δεν ξέρω. Λένε οι άνθρωποι ότι ο άνθρωπος είναι μια μαγνητοταινία. Λέει και ξετυλίγει από εδώ, όπως το μαγνητόφωνο, και γράφει η άλλη μαγνητοταινία από εκεί. Σοβαρά τα λέτε αυτά τα πράγματα;
δεύτερο, και το καλό μας το κρασί και τους φίλους μας, και κάναμε το γλέντι μας και φορέσαμε τα καλά μας και λοιπά. Αυτό είναι Πάσχα; Είναι λάθος. Έξοδος. Από τον Φαραώ, τους πήρε από τον Φαραώ και τους πέρασε στη γη της Επαγγελίας. Φύγαμε εμείς από τον Φαραώ αυτές τις ημέρες, από τον νοητό Φαραώ; Εκαθαρίσαμε τους εαυτούς μας; Φύγαμε από του σατανά τα χέρια και περάσαμε μπροστά εδώ; Δεν έγινε αυτό το πράγμα. Σταθήκαμε μόνο στο υλικό μέρος, στο πνευματικό τίποτα. Και μιλήσαμε, μάλιστα, και πολλοί θα συζητήσανε αυτά τα πράγματα, ότι ψέματα αυτά τα πράγματα, ο Χριστός δεν ανέστη, διότι ο Χριστός, επί παραδείγματι, ουδέποτε απέθανε. Πόσα πράγματα δεν κυκλοφορούν γύρω από εκείνο που λέμε εμείς «Χριστός ανέστη»! Μα, αφού δεν πιστεύεις ότι πέθανε, τι ανέστη; Χρόνια πολλά, με βάση τι; Πώς εσύ το λες τα χρόνια πολλά; Με βάση το Πάσχα;
Στον τάφο του είναι ο Μωάμεθ. Πάμε παρακάτω να βρούμε τον Βούδα, μέσα στον τάφο του είναι ο Βούδας, τον κράτησε ο Άδης εκεί. Πάμε να βρούμε τον Λούθηρο επάνω, μέσα στον τάφο του είναι. Πάμε να βρούμε τους Πάπες, μέσα στον τάφο τους είναι. Πάμε να βρούμε τον Ρώσσελ, μέσα στον τάφο του είναι. Πάμε να βρούμε τον Ζωροάστρη, μέσα στον τάφο του είναι. Πάμε να βρούμε τον Ιησούν τον Εσταυρωμένον, τον Ναζαρηνόν, ούτε ίχνος. Εδώ δυνάμεθα να καταλάβουμε ότι τα πράγματα δεν σταματάνε μέχρι του τάφου. «Όπως εγώ ανέστην, και όσοι πιστεύουν σε εμένα θα αναστηθούν». Ήδη το πιστεύουν είτε όχι. Αλλά δεν συζητούμε τι λέει ο κόσμος. «Εάν», λέει, «αυτοί σιωπήσουν, οι λίθοι κεκράξονται». Θα μιλήσουν, λέει, τα λιθάρια. Θα έρθετε εδώ και τα λιθάρια θα σου πούνε ότι ο αφέντης μου ανέστη. Και εφόσον έχει τη δύναμη να αναστηθεί ο αρχηγός μου, πώς εγώ;
Αυτοί κοιμηθήκανε, όλοι αυτοί πέσανε σε νάρκη και λένε εκ των υστέρων ότι «ημών κοιμωμένων, τον έκλεψαν οι μαθηταί του». Από κοιμισμένους μάρτυρες δεν περιμένουμε μαρτυρία. Αφού κοιμισμένοι ήτανε, δεν ξέρετε τι έγινε. Αν παραδεχτούμε και αυτό. Όταν, λοιπόν, εγώ πρόκειται να κλέψω, εσείς τι θα κάνουμε; Θα πάρουμε μια κουβέρτα, οι δυο μας, θα τον πετάξουμε απάνω σ' αυτή, θα πάρουμε την κουβέρτα στον ώμο και θα φύγουμε. Ή θα πάρουμε ένα τσουβάλι της ρίγας, θα το ρίξουμε μέσα, θα τον φορτωθούμε στον ώμο και θα φύγουμε. Προς τι να αφήσουν το σεντόνι εκεί πέρα; Γιατί να το βγάλουν, το σουδάριον αυτό;
Που τον εσταυρώσανε, αυτοί είπαν με τα λόγια που σας είπα τώρα, εκτός των άλλων αποδεικτικών. Αλλά συνοπτικώς ένα χωρίο πήρα απλώς από το ίδιο το Ευαγγέλιο, από τα ίδια τα λόγια τα δικά τους. Λέω: «Εμνήσθημεν ότι εκείνος ο πλάνος, έτι ζων», άρα πέθανε. «Δώστε μας να ασφαλίσουμε τον τάφο», άρα τον έχετε ενταφιάσει. Ησφάλισαν τον τάφο, χάθηκε, άρα ανέστη. Αποδεικνύεται από τα ίδια τα κείμενα τα δικά τους, από τα λόγια τα δικά τους. Και τι χρειάζομαι μαρτύρων, εφόσον οι ίδιοι οι κατηγορούμενοι που τον κατηγορούν, αυτοί οι ίδιοι ομολογούν ότι πια πέθανε και ετάφη; Άλλωστε, ένα κλασικό, αν μπορούσε να καταλάβει ο άνθρωπος, και το προσέθετε. Αλλά εμείς ούτε εκκλησιαζόμεθα ούτε προσέχουμε. Ποιος από μας πήγε στην Αποκαθήλωση; Ποιος πήγε; Πάει στον τάφο, στην κηδεία της μάνας του, του αδερφού του, του πατέρα του και λοιπά, και καλώς κάνει. Αλλά του Θεού του γιατί δεν πάει; Του Θεού του γιατί δεν πάει; Ξέρετε τι λέγει εκεί πέρα;
Έφτασαν εκεί που ήταν ο Χριστός. Σηκώνεται από τη στάση προσευχής και τους λέει το εξής: «Τίνα ζητείτε;» Λέει, λοιπόν, «Ιησούν ζητούμε». Λέει: «Εγώ είμαι, εγώ είμαι». Και με το «εγώ είμαι» που τους είπε, έπεσαν όλοι πίσω να σκοτωθούν. Σαν τα λάχανα που τα καίει ο πάγος, έπεσαν όλοι πίσω μόλις τους είπε. Έπεσαν. «Σηκωθείτε», λέει, «ελάτε εδώ. Ποιον ζητάτε;» «Ιησούν», λέει. «Εγώ είμαι. Αφήσετε αυτούς υπάγειν, αφήσετε τους άλλους. Εμένα δεν ζητάτε; Άστε τους μαθητάς να φύγουν». Αυτός, λοιπόν, που είχε τη δύναμη να πέσουν πίσω και να μην μπορούν να τον πλησιάσουν... Πού να πλησιάσει τη Θεότητα άνθρωπος χωματένιος;
Αποδεικνύει, λοιπόν, εδώ και πάλι ότι θεληματικά, από αγάπη, προς το εκούσιον πάθος, για την αγάπη του ανθρώπου, έρχεται και παραδίδεται και σταυρώνεται και θάπτεται και φτάνει μέχρις Άδου ταμείων και ξενοδοχείται, όπως λέμε τη Μεγάλη Παρασκευή: «Εν σμικρώ ξενοδοχείται, ον παίδες ευλογείτε, ιερείς υμνείτε, λαοί υπερυψούτε εις πάντας τους αιώνας». Και πήγε κάτω εκεί και εκήρυξε. Και εκεί που πήγε, είναι στον Άδη, πήγαν άνθρωποι στον Άδη, πήγε και εκήρυξε εκεί και όσοι τον εδέχτησαν τους ζωοποίησε. Τι το λέμε το «Χριστός Ανέστη»; Τι λέει το «Χριστός Ανέστη»; «Θανάτω θάνατον πατήσας και τοις εν τοις μνήμασι ζωήν χαρισάμενος». Σε ποιους, λοιπόν, εχάρισε τη ζωή, αν δεν υπάρχει τίποτα πέραν του τάφου και δεν υπάρχει ζωή πέραν του τάφου; Σε ποιους; Και σε ποιους, μην εκήρυξε στα εν φυλακή πνεύματα;
Αυτά είναι τα νεύρα του ανθρώπου μέσα. Άμα τα νεύρα του ανθρώπου χαλάσουν, ο άνθρωπος δεν κάνει για τίποτε. Θα μπει σάρκα, θα μπει δέρμα, θα μπει πνεύμα και οι άνθρωποι θα ξανασηκωθούν. Το είπε, το λέει η Εκκλησία. Πολλοί από εμάς τελευταίως κρατούμε και ένα μικρό εγκόλπιο της Μεγάλης Εβδομάδος στην εκκλησία, άλλη μια συνέκδημο, άλλοι μια σύνοψη κρατούν στο χέρι τους. Ανοίξτε το, εν ψυχρώ τώρα, όταν γυρίσετε σπίτι σας το μεσημέρι, κοιτάξετε στα γεγονότα της Μεγάλης Παρασκευής και φτάσετε στο σημείο εκείνο που γυρίζει ο Επιτάφιος και διαβάστε του Ιεζεκιήλ την προφητεία, να δείτε τι είναι, τον τρόπο που θα αναστηθούμε. Ευχαριστούμε. Γιατί το έγραψε ο Θεός εξακόσια χρόνια π.Χ.; Να μας κλέψει το πορτοφόλι; Να μας πάρει και τη γυναίκα;
