Summary

Earthly life is a brief pilgrimage whose unknown end calls every person to remain prepared for death, judgment, and Christ’s Second Coming. Baptism unites the believer to Christ’s death and Resurrection, while the Eucharist gives Christ’s Body and Blood as the pledge of resurrection on the last day. Believers are urged to defend and support the Orthodox Church, honor the priesthood, encourage vocations, and seek Christ within the Church rather than relying on private spirituality.

Fathers and beloved brothers in Christ, I do not know whether you have ever reflected on our coming into this world. Many people have never considered this question, because they occupy themselves with other matters.

On this occasion, since we are still within the season filled with the influence of the Resurrection of Jesus, I wanted my subjects to center on these great events, and more specifically on the teaching of Jesus.

If a person reflects deeply and understands that he did not come into the world merely to live, but came into the world to die—and that he dies in order to live—because this kingdom comes to an end, while that Kingdom never ends, then his life will first of all change for the better, and through this temporary life he will also secure eternity. Compared with eternity, a person remains in this world for only a very short time. Yet if he lives rightly and makes good use of the time of his sojourn here,

he will gain eternity. One might say that the time a person lives here is the briefest of moments, even if he lives as many years as Methuselah. However many years Noah lived—nine hundred and thirty years—or Methuselah—nine hundred years. Shall I go further and say that a person might live for a million years? Compared with eternity, even a million years lived here are nothing. Yet this short time we have here bears fruit in eternity. One day, whether we like it or not, whether we believe it or not, we shall depart from here. No one will be able to keep us here, however great we may be in this world.

However greatly we may have influenced human knowledge, science, or the lives of others, before death and before Jesus, the Lord of death, we are small. It is as though someone were told, “Little one, come and give an account.” Who are you? Napoleon, Alexander the Great, Stalin, Roosevelt? Who are you, great man who passed through this world? Before death and before Jesus, you are small. “Little one, come and give an account.” There will be no saying, “I cannot,” “Leave me alone,” or “I have no time to prepare.” Our God has hidden two things from man—or rather, properly speaking, three: when a person will die, what he will die from, and when He Himself will come.

A person does not know these things; God has hidden them from him. In view of these three unanswered questions, he must be very watchful in his life. I do not know when I shall die; I know only that I shall die. Therefore, I must be ready at every moment. I do not know what I shall die from, because if I knew, I would die of fear before my death came. Nor do I know when He will come. From his own days Paul was saying, “We who are alive, who remain,” and he said “we,” including himself. Even then they were awaiting the Second Coming. Yet this fear of death is absent from people; and when I say fear...

I do not mean the fear that says, “I am afraid; I shall die and be lost,” and so forth. That is not what I mean. Fear means taking something seriously. I fear God: I take God seriously. I fear death: I take death seriously, because death is the end. After that I have no time left to put things right, to gain anything, or to labor; everything is over. This is why a person must reflect deeply and take care to make good use of the time of his sojourn here. Time was not given to man so that he might conquer the earth. Man is not a permanent resident of the earth; he is a sojourner upon it. As I told you, he did not come to remain here. The fact is that man came in order to depart.

He departs in order to remain there, in the longed-for homeland for which we pray even at the final hour of our death: “making Paradise once again our longed-for homeland.” Therefore, whether a person is insignificant or great, successful as we say, educated or uneducated, he must always keep the hour of his death in mind. From the moment Christ died and rose again, death is no longer immortal. By saying that death is not immortal, I mean that it is no longer something that can terrify us. Through Christ we put death to death; we trample death underfoot, as the hymn says so beautifully: “trampling down death by death, and granting life to those in the tombs.”

Death cannot threaten us. Yet how a person will live here, so as to find himself there, depends upon him. Pass that way we certainly shall. One day eight hands and eight feet will come together and carry us where we do not want to go, to that place that makes us knock on wood whenever we hear of someone’s death. They will carry us there whether we believe it or not. The question, however, is what state I shall be in when I depart. That is the issue, and it depends upon me; everything else depends upon God. Moreover, since Christ has risen, we too shall rise. This is something else that should deeply concern us. For when a person rises in the new body that Christ will give him,

he will find within it whatever he himself has placed there. When a person dies, he gives the grave something to keep for him. And what does the grave keep? In some cases it keeps doves, and in others it keeps ravens. If a person departs from here—if the hour of death finds him ready, as the Church says, clean, repentant, having confessed, having received Holy Communion, and with the Psalter in his hand—then he deposits in that bank, in that strongbox called the grave, a white dove, pure white. At the Resurrection, that dove will enter the body once again, and the person will rise again.

The unbelieving, indifferent, unrepentant person—the one who has neither confessed nor received Holy Communion—will also deposit something in that treasury called the grave. But he will deposit a raven, a blackened soul. And on that coming day this blackened soul will enter the body. Therefore, each person is responsible for what his body will contain on that day. Christ will bring about the Resurrection; He will ask no one’s opinion, for there are as many opinions as there are people in the world. Christ does not ask anyone about this. He Himself will bring about the Resurrection. But what will be inside that risen body is the person’s own responsibility. Let everyone, then, reflect upon his sojourn here. Let him attend carefully to the Church and her texts.

Let him attend to the feasts, not keeping them merely on a material level, but raising them to the spiritual. We are still under the influence of the proclamation “Christ is risen,” which, as you know, will continue to be heard until the Ascension. That Christ has risen is a great event; it is the assurance that I too shall rise, and that you too shall rise. But the question is how a person will rise. Will he rise on the right or on the left? At the Resurrection and the Judgment, will he hear, “Come, you blessed,” or “Depart, you accursed”? That is a matter for each person. If, then, a person understands that the grave is not the end, as some suppose, but that the grave is the beginning, a station on the way into a life

that has no end, then surely he will take care to move beyond theory and, when all is said and done, to live in such a way that whether his death comes suddenly or naturally, the camera lens of death will find him in a state that will allow Christ to say to him on that coming day, “Come, My blessed one,” and not, “Depart, My accursed one.” This, however, depends upon us. Someone may say, “What you have told us so far is all very well; but how and where can we attain these things?” A person cannot secure the good ordering of his soul outside the Church.

Whatever his birth may be.

A person may be regarded as the kindest of all, someone thought to perform more good works in the world than anyone else; but if he has no relationship with the Church, the Orthodox Church of Jesus, he will not behold the face of God. The road from the coffeehouse does not lead to Paradise. The road from the marketplace does not lead to Paradise, nor the road of carnal embraces, corruption, the cellar, gambling, and so on. None of these roads leads to Paradise. Only from the Church does the road lead toward Paradise. I do not know whether you have ever noticed the arrangement of the church building. The Church contains many beautiful symbols. First of all, when someone approaches...

The veil in Solomon’s Temple symbolized sin. When Christ said upon the Cross, “It is finished,” the first miracle connected with this took place: the veil was torn from top to bottom. This veil is represented by what is called the Holy Doors. Why are they called Holy? What makes them different from the others? Are not the northern door and the other door over there, on the right, the southern door of the sanctuary, also doors leading into the sanctuary? Why should this one be called Holy? And why is there an archangel on one side with a sword in his hand, and another archangel on the other side, also with a sword in his hand? Why? When you went to church—if you went—did you ever look? Did you ever ask why?

Will you try to enter that way, by a path of your own choosing? The angel forbids it. Will you try to enter by the other side? The angel bars the way. “Why, angel?” You must go through the middle. You cannot pass here. You must go through the middle. You must pass through the Holy Doors. Why are they called the Holy Doors? Because through them souls enter and return to Paradise. Have you ever thought about that? Do you know that within the Church you will put your life in order? There you will change the garment of your soul. There you will once again put on the white robe that you surrendered to the Holy Son. There, upon the Holy Altar Table, is the fatted calf. There you will enter into communion with your Christ, so that you may become fit for the Kingdom of Heaven. Has this ever concerned you?

He says, “Come, inherit the Kingdom of My Father.” We are to inherit it? But are we children of the King? A kingdom requires royal children. Are we royal children? People, supposedly speaking with humility and making humble declarations, say, “I am nothing; I am a worm.” Really? Then how will such a person enter the Kingdom? Can someone enter the Kingdom of Heaven simply because he performs good works? He cannot. Something else is needed together with good works. A person’s good works are his luggage, the suitcases he takes on his journey. But to travel, it is not enough to have a suitcase.

He must have a ticket in order to take his luggage with him. This ticket for the Kingdom of Heaven, and for a person’s entrance through the Holy Doors, is issued by the Orthodox Church of Christ alone. No one else and no other church can issue it. Everyone else speaks only about this present life. Only the Orthodox Church and her Head speak also about the life to come. Everyone else sees only as far as this world. I do not know whether you have been to the Holy Land, to the place called Jerusalem. If you go there, or if you have already gone, you will find the tomb of our Christ empty.

His tomb is empty. But if you go to find the tomb of the leader of the Muslims, you will find him confined in Mecca. Muhammad is there in his tomb. If you go to find the leader of the Buddhists, the Buddha, you will find him confined there in his tomb. If you go to the other so-called leaders—whether his name is Luther, Russell, pope, or whatever else—they are all in their tombs. Only the Head of the Orthodox has an empty tomb. And that tomb is an assurance for me that, just as our Head rose as the firstborn from the dead, so I too shall rise on that coming day. They cannot give such an assurance. But in order for me to rise,

I must have royal blood flowing here in my veins. I must put into practice what Christ says in the sixth chapter of John: “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him; and I will raise him up on the last day.” Therefore, a person who has no relationship with the Orthodox Church, a person who has not been baptized—or who, though baptized, has stained his Baptism and does not care to keep his baptismal garment white—has no entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven, no matter who he may be in the eyes of the world. It is only in Christ’s Orthodox Church, by making use of the

Mysteries that the Church possesses. Only there is salvation and all that is necessary for salvation; and from there a person journeys toward the Kingdom of Heaven. If you remember the parable of the Good Samaritan, when that blessed man traveling down from Jerusalem to Jericho fell among thieves, the one called the Good Samaritan placed him on his own animal and brought him to the inn. There he took out and gave the innkeeper—how much was it?—two denarii. “Take care,” he said, “and tend this wounded, half-dead man.

Whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I return.” He did not take him to a coffeehouse, as I said; he did not take him into the countryside or to a university. He brought him to the inn and entrusted him to the innkeepers. What is the inn? It is the place that receives everyone: the Church of Christ. And who are the innkeepers who, on Christ’s behalf, have undertaken the healing and full recovery of the faithful when they fall among thieves, into the hands of Satan? The clergy. There is no salvation apart from the clergy. And this is not a question of the personal quality of the clergy, as though a good and well-respected priest saves people while one

who has sinned does not. No. Does Holy Scripture say anywhere that Judas did not work miracles? Judas worked miracles just as the others did, regardless of the fact that he was Judas and came to such an end. I say this because many people remain far from the Church on account of the clergy’s alleged misconduct. That is a fundamental mistake. As the divine John Chrysostom says, “God does not ordain everyone, but He works through everyone.” When an Orthodox priest or bishop puts on his vestments, he is an angel. When he removes them, he too has his sins. But he too repents and goes to Holy Confession. Just as we have our confessors, so the clergy have their own spiritual fathers.

Therefore, no one should ever imagine that he can remain outside and reach the Kingdom of Heaven on his own. He must pass through the Holy Doors. You will come here, and Christ Himself will come forth in the person of the priest, the bishop, or the deacon and say to you, “Draw near with fear of God, faith, and love.” There you will enter into communion. Holy Communion means divine communion. There you will receive the Blood of God the King and place it within your veins, and in this way you will become a child of the King. Without the King’s blood, how can you inherit a kingdom? You must be a royal child to have a right to the Kingdom. A kingdom is inherited by the King’s children, not by ordinary mortals.

You must be of royal blood, as they say, in order to inherit. You must be a prince. The Christian is a person of great dignity, and the Christian’s calling is great—one that neither angels nor archangels possess. For we receive God in Holy Communion, while the angels and archangels minister to us. They are “ministering spirits sent forth to serve those who are to inherit salvation.” I have a guardian angel for my soul, given to me by Christ through His Church from the day I was baptized. Do you not read Compline at home in the evening? Do you not also read the beautiful prayer to your angel? “Holy Angel, who stands beside my wretched soul and my afflicted life, do not forsake me, a sinner.” Do you acknowledge that an angel is beside you? Do we truly fear God, my beloved? We have failed to take notice.

These are great privileges. “I am a worm,” you say. Why are you a worm, since you have been baptized? How can you bear “the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit” and still be a worm? You only say the words, “I am a worm.” But if someone steps on the sore spot of your ego or your self-interest, you immediately rise up, slipper in hand, shouting, “Do you know who I am?” You become fierce. You say you are a worm, but you do not truly accept it. So, in brief, with what I have said by way of introduction, I want to call your attention to the Church. There is no salvation outside the Church. When a person is born and comes into the world, Christ, through His Church, receives that person who has come into the world, even though he is alive and young,

yet half-dead, like the man who fell among thieves. He is alive in body but dead in soul. For it is written: “Behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me.” This person, then—this living dead man—comes into the embrace of the Church. He is buried in Baptism, and he rises again. Baptism is burial and Resurrection. It is not merely a social bond between families; it is not to be made an occasion for sin or personal advantage, as we have reduced it to. It is a great and solemn reality. A dead man who has come into the world is buried in the likeness of Jesus’ death and rises again. From that moment onward, he must guard this gift, by which Christ transformed the black coal of his soul and made it glow red.

If we do not understand the role of the Church, it is only natural that we should remain outside; and if we remain outside, the wolf will devour us far from the Church. Let no one ever entertain the thought that the Church is unnecessary or that the Church has supposedly fallen into error. The Church does not fall into error. Besides, as the divine John Chrysostom says so beautifully—yes:

“It is better to be mistaken with the Church than to be correct outside her.” You sit outside and think that you know everything? Even if the Church could fall into error, the Holy Spirit would not abandon her, nor would Christ allow her to remain in error. It is better to go with all those who are supposedly mistaken, yet remain with the Church—whose Head is Christ—than to remain outside and imagine that, by following your own opinion and some private path of your own, you will reach the Kingdom of Heaven. You will not. You must pass through the Holy Doors here.

Here you must go toward the apse, where the icon of the Theotokos, “She Who Is More Spacious than the Heavens,” stands behind the Holy Table in the place once occupied by Eve, so that you may return to Paradise. There is no other way. Sadly, much mud has been thrown at our Church today. Much mud has been thrown at our clergy today. And to some degree we too are responsible, because not only are we insufficiently prepared to answer those who speak against all that is sacred to us, but we often join in. If someone accuses the Church of one thing, we add the whipped cream and the cherry on top and turn it into something far worse. We add to the accusation instead of covering our brother’s fault. Because of us, my beloved, the time has begun

when churches and priests will become fewer; and then we will understand the damage caused by our tolerance and by our tongues. A person will not understand the Church, the power found there, and how necessary she is for humanity until he dies—until he dies and no priest can be found to bury him. For the Church receives him and sends him on his way: “Blessed is the way in which you shall walk today.” The Church will continue to commemorate him afterward. The Church will remove a particle for him at the Proskomide. The Church will then place it into the Blood of Christ and say, “Wash away, O Lord, by Your precious Blood, the sins of those commemorated here.” And I take this opportunity to tell you:

The greatest relief, the greatest benefit that can be given to a departed person comes at that moment when the priest—the sinner, supposedly, whom we condemn—places these souls into the Holy Chalice with the Blood of Christ. Saint John of Euchaita says that a person’s lantern should go before him while he is alive: that is, he should set everything in order so that he will not be afraid when death finds him. Yet often, he says, even when the lantern comes behind, at the end of the procession, it still gives light. He is speaking of the help given through memorial services and, above all, through the offering that a person brings to the Church and from which the priest removes a particle at the Proskomide. Thank you.

It is the particle offered for someone who has died. If a person loves his departed ones—his parents, siblings, and relatives—he should do this for them. And even if he does not love them, if he at least loves himself, he should care for his own soul and leave those who come after him an understanding of what the Orthodox Church is and what the Orthodox clergy are. Apart from our own friendly opinion, we also have testimony from heaven. Ask a demon-possessed person to tell you what the Orthodox Church is. Go to Saint Gerasimos on Kefalonia and listen to the demons.

Ask what an Orthodox priest is. Go to Saint Nektarios of Aegina, who also has grace against unclean spirits, and hear the demon confess the truth about the Orthodox Church and the clergy. “But the priest is sinful.” The sinfulness of the clergy is never taken into account in the Mystery. Of course, if he too, being human, sins and does not repent, he will have to answer to the Lord on the day of Judgment. But that is one matter, and this is another. When I receive Holy Communion from his hand or kiss his hand, I kiss the hand that serves God. Many people refuse to do this. They try to take the antidoron from the candle stand and leave. They do not want to receive it from the priest’s hand. Yet if they had spiritual eyes,

they would see that hand covered in blood, because it has divided their God in the Divine Liturgy. And you hear Satan cry out, “Priest, why are you slaughtering their God?” because he sees what is happening. We are not bored when we go to Church, because we know what takes place there, how greatly we need the Church, and how much we must support her with our prayers—and even give our blood for her, because the Church gives blood and asks for blood. Priests have begun to grow scarce; their numbers are diminishing. Things are not going well. The city produces generals, lawyers, engineers, astronauts—it produces every profession imaginable. But it does not produce priests. Woe to us. The number of priestly vocations...

should be proportionate. Christ gives each person his particular talent. You see a child arranging little soldiers, and gradually you realize that he will become a general. You see a girl sewing and know that she will become a seamstress. You see another child taking things apart and repairing them with a screwdriver, and you know he is headed toward engineering. In the same way, you can recognize a calling to the priesthood. You see a child putting on a makeshift phelonion and turning a milk tin into a censer. In every other case, no one places obstacles before these developing talents—the future generals and engineers. But if a child puts on a little phelonion and takes a milk tin to use as a censer, his mother is the first to scold him, followed by his father, godparent, uncle,

the neighbors—everyone. No one obstructs any of his other inclinations. But when he wants to put on a cassock, everyone rises against it. Heaven will be brought down and earth turned upside down. “He wants to become a monk? Oh, no! To become a priest? What a shame for such a fine young man! Why wear black?” Very well—let them come and bury you tomorrow. Go on, and tomorrow, when there is no priest to bury you, then we shall talk. This is why we will be punished even in this world: because we do not love the Church, do not support her with our prayers, and do not offer our children—or ourselves—for the service of Christ.

If the President of the Republic asked us for a son, we would walk him all the way to Athens ourselves. But if Christ asks for him, every demon on earth will stir up resistance to keep him from going to serve the Word of God. How, then, can you offer nothing to the Church? You have a child, yet you do not give him to the Church; you give him to the State.

Then you accuse the Church of having no people worthy of your intelligence and education. You who claim to love the Church, you who demand worthy clergy—offer your own child so that Christ may prepare him for such a place. Why do we not do this? We will have to give an account. By your own words you will be judged. There is no salvation outside the Church, my beloved. Christ is in the Church. Tomorrow or the day after, you will go...

Tomorrow or the day after, you will go to Church. Listen carefully to a detail mentioned there: the man who had been paralyzed for thirty-eight years was healed, yet he did not know Christ, and Christ withdrew. But afterward the man went to the Church to thank God for sending the One who had healed him, and there he found that same One—Christ. Christ is there. Do you want to meet Christ? You will meet Him there, in the Church. Do you have needs and problems? Go there, to the Church. Human problems, and especially problems of the soul, are not resolved outside the Church. Christ shed His Blood for this Church, and He has preserved it to this day for the sake of the few.

The others seize the opportunity to come into the church courtyard, take the light, and then steal away to eat their Easter soup. They do not remain for the Resurrection service. If their mother were rising from the dead, they would stay. If their mother-in-law were rising, they would stay. But now that Christ has risen, you leave! I do not know whether such things happened here; I did not see them. But I know that Satan’s tricks are the same everywhere. One father was leaving with his child just as the dismissal was given and “Christ is risen” was proclaimed. The child was twelve or thirteen years old. “Come on, little George, let’s go.” But the boy heard these words being said in the prayers: “Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered; and let those who hate Him flee from before His face.” “Father! Father!”

he said. “Do you not hear what it says?” “What does it say?” “It calls us enemies because we are leaving! God arises, and they flee. Where are we going, Father? Are you not afraid?” The father was shaken. “All right,” he said, “we will leave another time.” The child reminded him that by leaving, we make ourselves like the enemies who flee. David spoke these words one thousand and fifty years before Christ, yet this is precisely what we do during the Resurrection service when we refuse to remain for the Resurrection. Stay! Are you hungry? Is someone threatening you? Who is driving you away? The devils are driving you away. The devil does not want a person in the Church. He does not want him to go to Church early in the morning; and if he lets him go at all, he will send him after the second bell, after the Gospel, during the Lord’s Prayer, or at the final dismissal. Even if he lets him go from the beginning, he will keep him from reaching Holy Confession and send him to Church burdened with sins.

When sin stands between us and God, it becomes a screen before us. Christ opened that veil for us, yet we go and set sin up there again, and then we cannot pass through. All these things are found at the Holy Altar. Christ has done everything on His side through the Cross, and He will continue to do so. But how highly do we value what Christ has established and given to us? I do not know how you think, how you feel, or how you conduct yourself in the face of death and eternity. If these things matter to us, let us ask and learn the purpose of the Church, and let us fear, because God is long-suffering, but He does not forget.

The Greek word for “long-suffering” means that God keeps His wrath far away. He postpones my trial and also postpones my punishment. And if I make good use of metanoia—repentance—I am saved. So I have told you: the person who does not come to know Christ before the Holy Doors and is not united with Christ there through Holy Communion would have been better off never being born. For what purpose was he born? Merely to eat God’s okra and eggplants, or His calves and chickens? He gains nothing from that. Eternity is the goal: to labor here as one ought, so as to gain life there. I repeat, salvation is accomplished within the Orthodox Church. The Church is under attack, and precisely because she is attacked, we must understand this:

She must be doing something right. Have you ever seen children throwing stones at a walnut tree or an orange tree that bears no fruit? They do not stone it, because there is nothing on it to knock down. So if our Orthodox Church is being stoned in this world, that means she possesses something. Something is happening there that does not serve the devil’s interests. Here a person must be truly awake—not a trickster, not a schemer, not merely street-smart. In Greek, the word for “clever” suggests someone awakened from sleep. He must not allow Satan to lull him into the dark sleep of sin. That is what it means to be awake: awake from sleep, awake from sin. A truly discerning person grasps what is at stake. Should he close his ears?

When he hears the bell, he should spring to his feet and be unable to remain seated, as though his chair and his bed were covered with nails. And he should not come whenever he pleases, whether morning or evening, arriving halfway through the service at whatever time suits him. When you are invited to a banquet, you do not arrive at the end, after the plates have been cleared away. Naturally, you come from the beginning. When you go to see a play that deeply interests you, you are there from the beginning. And if you miss the beginning, you stay afterward to make up what you missed. Only when you go to Jesus do you go your own way, at your leisure, whenever you please. “The third bell has rung!” What of it? Were the first and second bells not meant for you? Were they meant for the priest?

Whom were they meant for?

These are fundamental and universal matters that, in one way or another, concern us all. I repeat: I have not lived among you. I did not go to Church here with you. I do not know what you have been doing or how you have conducted yourselves, so I cannot speak on the basis of that. Still, this is what I have to say. Never forget, day or night, to thank God that, after so many sins, Orthodox churches still remain standing and that clergy still exist—even if they are few and whatever their shortcomings may be—to act as salt and to stand as a force confronting Satan. This depends on us and on no one else. God desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth, but our response depends on us. God forces no one, and He saves no one against his will. Let us not be deceived by the words of the world.

Pay no attention to what the world says about us. Do not even listen to what your logismoi—your intrusive thoughts—say about you, because they will always make you out to be better than someone else. Do not listen to those around you. Do not listen to the little wife, the dear husband, the girlfriend, or the friend. At any given moment, four or five different opinions exist about every person. You are hearing and seeing me for the first time. Some of you send me to Paradise, and others send me to Hell. But wherever you send me, I am not going there on the strength of your judgment.

One verdict says, “Panagopoulos belongs in Hell”—the whole man, of course. Another says, “Panagopoulos belongs in Paradise.” But neither verdict will be accepted at the final gate.

My friends, acquaintances, and those who have known me from earlier years also have an opinion different from yours. That is natural, since they know me more closely. They too issue their certificate about me, but it will not be accepted. My wife, my children, my family, those closest to me, and my coworkers know me from yet another side, so they have a different opinion as well. They too issue a certificate, but it will not be accepted either. And I, who know still other sides of my life, could draw up my own certificate if called upon. But that one will not be accepted either.

What matters is not what you say, what I say, or what two friends say. What does He say about me at this very moment? That is the question. What does He say about me at this very moment—and, by extension, about all these things? You may hide them, manage to cover them up, conceal them and bury them, but God is not deceived. He will uncover you. He knows everything: what is hidden and what is manifest, what came before, what is happening now, and what will come afterward. He knows everything. All things lie naked and exposed before Him.

When you go into His Church and stand there with your hands reverently folded, remember this, if I may put it this way: He is like one who sees with X-rays. He looks through you and examines you. He knows where you were yesterday. He knows how you have ordered everything within yourself. He knows how you feel and what your disposition is toward others. He knows you. He stands at the Holy Doors and looks at you. Ah, how little fear of God we have! Many of us would not go to Church at all; we would be terrified. We would not enter the Church for a wedding, a Baptism, or anything else if we could see Christ’s sleepless eye searching us from head to foot, bearing with us as we enter, still bearing with us when we come without metanoia, without Holy Confession, without reverence, and without love.

Whether we receive Him in Holy Communion or not, we tear Him apart—and You endure so much, O Lord! But for how long? This should concern you above all: “My God, has the cup perhaps overflowed? Will Your indignation overtake me today? Lord, I am fallen, and I must face Your wrath and Your justice.” This should occupy your thoughts first. Since the subject has arisen, let me tell you something about the Church for you to remember. When you go to Church, look around at the icons hanging there. Look also at the iconostasis: at the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, of our Lord, of the honorable Forerunner, of the patron saint of the church, and so forth. You will see that almost all the icons around the church—including those of Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos—have an oil lamp burning before them.

Now look at the bishop’s throne, where our Lord is depicted. Why is there no oil lamp there? Why do you place a lamp before this icon but not before that one? Are you being stingy over a few drops of oil? Have you ever seen a hanging oil lamp before the bishop’s throne? Have you ever entered one of our monasteries or churches and found one there? Why not? Nothing in the Church is accidental. What you see is arranged to remind you of spiritual truths. So why do the Most Holy Theotokos and Christ have oil lamps before their icons here, while Christ on the throne does not?

Mercy. We say, “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.” Do we say it or not? Then we turn to Christ: “Save us, O Son of God.” And when a person believes, practices metanoia—repentance—makes Holy Confession, and comes to receive Holy Communion here before the Holy Doors, salvation is brought about. Through the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos, Christ saves the person by His Body and Blood. But when a person does not repent; when the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos, his own prayers, his metanoia, and his Holy Confession have not obtained mercy for him, then one day the curtain will fall. And the soul that could have found mercy and salvation here will enter into judgment and face divine justice.

For the throne represents judgment, and at the judgment there is no mercy. That is why no oil burns there now. Woe to you if you fall into the hands of divine justice. The Lord says, as it were, “I am waiting for you here one day.” Make haste to set your affairs in order here, before the Holy Doors. Repent, make Holy Confession, and come here to find Christ, who offers Himself to you, so that you may be saved. Otherwise, they will carry you here by force and bring you before the judgment. Then nothing will avail you. The judgment is without mercy. It is His judgment. When a person understands this, he will fall down in terror. What am I before God? I am a beast. Have you noticed the pickaxe, or axe, at the bottom of the icon of the honorable Forerunner? What is it? It is the justice of God, resting for the present.

His hand must take up that axe before it can cut. Our Christ has not yet taken up the axe. He is long-suffering. He has not yet taken it up to clear the threshing floor. Woe to us if He does. Woe to us if He does! We ought to tremble. We ought to lose sleep at night. If we understood what sin means, and that one sin crucified this God—one sin—we would be very different. We would not live as we now live, nor do the things we now do. These are only some of the things one person can tell another, so that he may understand the grace of God more deeply: what grace does for humanity, where God has entrusted it to human authority, and how it is administered by ordinary people.

People demand that the clergy be angels before they will go to Church. You want him to be an angel, do you? Do you not thank God that He entrusted this ministry to your fellow human being—to someone who bears flesh and has weaknesses, so that he may have compassion on you, who also have weaknesses? If God had appointed an angel to hear our Holy Confession, no one would dare approach him. You would go to the angel and say, “I killed my own children; I ended their lives.” And the angel would answer, “What? I know nothing of such things.”

A hyena does not do such a thing. A lioness does not do it. No wild beast does it—and yet you do it, O man.

Thank our dear God for placing us in the hands of human clergy—men clothed in flesh, who know our weaknesses and temptations. They know how easily we can be deceived, evade responsibility, tell lies, and fall into despair, and so they show us compassion. Otherwise, our birth would have been in vain. All these things have been established and set in place within the mercy of God and the love of God. So let us thank God for what He does for us: that He still keeps these churches open and still gives us clergy. And let us pray. Prayer is like an umbrella: may God protect these men, so that they may be able to help us both in this world and in the next. Perhaps you have heard these things before.

But even if you have not heard them, pay attention to them. God is good. At this moment, I am serving as an irrigation channel, and you are the trees being watered. But it is Christ who sends the water into the channel, so that both the channel and the trees may receive it. He knows what each person needs. He knows where each person is weak. Christianity is not merely a matter of good behavior. This does not mean that we should be harsh or unapproachable, but the most important thing for a person’s salvation is to have a living relationship with the life-giving Mysteries

of the Church of Christ. Do you know what the wound in Christ’s side is called? Life-giving. What is the tomb of our Lord called? The Life-giving Tomb. What is the Precious Cross called? The Precious and Life-giving Cross. What is the artos—the blessed bread—upon the Holy Table called? The Bread of Life. Everything here is about life. But are we truly alive? That is the question. Are we alive within, my children? Truly? Or do we merely possess the same kind of life as the birds, the animals, and the reptiles? Do you know that there are people who are alive and yet dead? Do you know this? You hear it in the Gospel reading during Holy Unction.

One of the disciples learned that his father had died and asked Christ for permission: “Let me go and bury my father.” Christ said, “No.” “My father? Then what will happen to him?” “Let the dead bury their own dead.” There are plenty of people back in your village, dressed in their finest, who can bury your father. Have you ever noticed what the father said to the elder brother of the prodigal son? “This brother of yours was dead and is alive again.” But how was he dead? He was healthy and strong, enjoying himself with his women. That is precisely the point. Away from God, a person is the living dead. Away from the Mysteries, away from the clergy, away from Holy Communion, away from

confession, a person is both alive and dead. Do you remember what was written to the bishop of Laodicea in the Apocalypse? “You have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.” People become walking cemeteries. And yet, unfortunately, we are so generous with our praise. “How are things at home?” “Glory to God, everything is fine.” “How are the children?” “Glory to God.” Can you tell me why you are glorifying God? What good are the children doing? Do they attend Church? No. Do they confess? No. Do they fast? No. Are they chaste? No. Then why do you glorify God? Because they have a job, have bought themselves a car, and go around with their girlfriends and boyfriends—is that what glorifies God? Woe to us on the day we mock God. Thank you.

Our flags ought to be flying at half-mast that day. There are so many of the living dead among us. People who have no relationship with the Church, no relationship with the Mysteries—especially the supremely loving Mystery of metanoia, repentance, and confession—people who do not attend Church and do not receive Holy Communion after proper preparation, are the living dead. They should implore God to be longsuffering and to wait for them, so that they may make good use of His longsuffering and kindness and finally repent. Saint Arsenios, at the age of ninety-four, constantly repeated this short prayer: “Lord, grant me more time, that I may make a beginning of repentance.”

And he even had a raising of the dead to his credit.

He would say, “Grant me more time, that I may make a beginning of repentance,” because day and night a person falls, whether in word, deed, or thought. Therefore, he must rise again. And how will you rise? Through this loving Mystery which Christ established at Pascha through the Holy Spirit. Christ said: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Το καταπέτασμα αυτό που συμβόλιζε την αμαρτία στον ναό του Σολομώντος, που όταν ο Χριστός είπε στον σταυρό «Τετέλεσται» έγινε το πρώτο θαύμα επ’ αυτού και εσχίσθη το καταπέτασμα από άνωθεν έως κάτω, αυτό συμβολίζεται διά της Ωραίας λεγομένης Πύλης. Γιατί να λέγεται Ωραία αυτή; Τι διαφέρει από τις άλλες; Μήπως η βόρεια πύλη και η άλλη πύλη από εκεί, η δεξιά, η νότια του Ιερού, δεν είναι κι αυτές πύλες που οδεύουν προς το Ιερό; Γιατί αυτή να λέγεται Ωραία; Και γιατί εκεί να έχει έναν αρχάγγελο με ένα σπαθί στο χέρι και από εκεί έναν άλλο αρχάγγελο, άλλος με το σπαθί στο χέρι; Γιατί; Κοίταξες ποτέ που πήγες στην Εκκλησία, εάν πήγες; Κοίταξες γιατί;

Θα θελήσεις να μπεις με τον δικό σου τρόπο από εκεί; Απαγορεύει ο άγγελος. Θα θελήσεις να μπεις από εκεί; Κλεισμένος ο άγγελος. «Γιατί, άγγελε;» Από το μέσον θα πας. Εδώ δεν περνάς. Από το μέσον θα πας. Από την Ωραία Πύλη θα πας. Γιατί λέγεται Ωραία Πύλη; Διότι από εκεί εισέρχονται οι ψυχές και ξαναγυρίζουν στον Παράδεισο. Το σκέφτηκες ποτέ αυτό; Γνωρίζεις ότι μέσα στην Εκκλησία θα τακτοποιήσεις τον εαυτόν σου; Εκεί θα αλλάξεις το κοστούμι της ψυχής σου, εκεί θα ξαναφορέσεις το λευκό ένδυμα που έδωσες στον Άγιο τον Υιό. Εκεί είναι ο μόσχος ο σιτευτός επί της Αγίας Τραπέζης, που θα επικοινωνήσεις με τον Χριστό σου για να γίνεις κατάλληλος για τη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Σε απασχόλησε ποτέ;

Κάτι σωστό έκανε. Είδατε καμιά καρυδιά και καμιά πορτοκαλιά που δεν έχει πορτοκάλια, που δεν κάνει, να την πετροβολούν τα παιδιά; Δεν την πετροβολούν, δεν έχει τίποτα πάνω της να πετροβολήσουν. Για να πετροβολείται, λοιπόν, η Ορθόδοξος ημών Εκκλησία στον κόσμο, αυτό πάει να πει κάτι έχει. Κάτι γίνεται εκεί πέρα που δεν συμφέρει στον διάβολο. Εδώ πρέπει να είναι έξυπνος ο άνθρωπος. Και όταν λέω έξυπνος, όχι παπατζής, όχι καταφερτζής, όχι ένα ξένα πατέα πανσάου. Έξυπνος είναι εξ ύπνου η λέξη. Έξυπνος από τον ύπνο. Να μην τον έχει αποκοιμίσει ο σατανάς από τον ζοφερό ύπνο της αμαρτίας. Αυτό πάει να πει έξυπνος. Έξυπνος από τον ύπνο. Έξυπνος από την αμαρτία. Μα είναι έξυπνος ο άνθρωπος που πιάνει το θέμα. Να κλείνει τα αυτιά του;

Όταν ακούει η καμπάνα, να σηκώνεται από κάτω, να μην μπορεί να καθίσει, να έχει καρφιά το κάθισμα, καρφιά το κρεβάτι όταν ακούει η καμπάνα. Και όχι το πρωί και το βράδυ. Και όχι όποτε νομίζουμε, μισή, και όποια ώρα νομίζουμε, μισή από το πρωί. Όταν καλείσαι σ' ένα τραπέζι, δεν πηγαίνεις στο τέλος που έχουν σηκωθεί τα πιάτα. Φυσικά, πηγαίνεις από την αρχή. Όταν πηγαίνεις σε ένα έργο και πολύ ενδιαφέρεσαι, είσαι από την αρχή. Και αν έχασες την αρχή, περιμένεις έπειτα να συμπληρώσεις μετά το τέλος την αρχή. Μόνο όταν πηγαίνεις στον Ιησού, πηγαίνεις με τον τρόπο τον δικό σου, με το ραχάτι σου, ό,τι ώρα θέλεις. Χτύπησε τρίτη καμπάνα. Γιατί; Η δευτέρα και η πρώτη δεν είναι για εσένα; Είναι για τον παπά;

Ποιον είναι;
