Summary

The lecture honors Saints Constantine and Helen and presents their service to the Church as inseparable from the defense of Orthodox faith. The speaker contrasts Orthodoxy’s apostolic succession, sacraments, saints, and priesthood with Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, and religions founded by human leaders. The lecture concludes that priests act as instruments of divine grace in baptism, confession, marriage, the Eucharist, and sanctification, regardless of their personal weaknesses.

Our gathering today coincides with a great feast celebrated by our Church, and this gives me the opportunity to say a few words about it. It is, as you know, the feast of Saint Constantine and Saint Helen.

They are two great Saints, mother and son, who have a close connection with our Church and, in particular, with our Orthodox faith.

I do not know whether you have ever considered that, although there are many kinds of faith, there is only one faith, one way, and one truth. They cannot all possess the truth together, because the truth is one. When one person claims, “I have the truth”...

And another claims, “I have the truth,” and everyone else says the same, then someone must be speaking falsely, because the truth is not divided into two thousand pieces.

Here across America and Canada, there are approximately two thousand religions. You can understand, then, whether it is possible for all of them to possess the truth. We did not arrange or strive to be born Orthodox. It is divine providence that we were born Orthodox. Yet it is tragic that, although we were born Orthodox, we become heterodox. We do not appreciate what has been sent from Heaven and belongs to Heaven. For Christ did not say, “I am truth.” He said, “I am the truth.” The truth belongs uniquely to Him.

He did not say, “I am light,” but, “I am the light.” That definite article makes His claim unique. “I am the life,” not merely life. “I am the way,” not merely a way. These definite articles placed before the words mean that He is the unique and only one.

Others may have doubts. But we should not have doubts about our faith, because from the very first days when the Church appeared, she has told us which faith and which Church are true, how we ought to pray, and what dangers we must guard against.

Ours is not merely faith; it is also knowledge. For example, in the days of these Saints, the Equals-to-the-Apostles Constantine and Helen, there appeared those whom we might compare with today’s Jehovah’s Witnesses, who deny the divinity of Jesus. An entire Council was held at Nicaea—and this is a historical fact. Four miracles also took place there, demonstrating that God was involved in that gathering, and the Council formally proclaimed that the Holy Trinity truly exists: the three Persons are one, and the one God is three Persons. One of these was the miracle God worked through Saint Spyridon, when Saint Spyridon took a roof tile.

He stepped forward before Arius, the leader there and the forerunner of those known today as Jehovah’s Witnesses, and said to him, “Arius, in the name of the Father”—and fire rose upward—“and of the Son”—and water flowed downward—“and of the Holy Spirit”—and earth remained in his hand. Then he repeated the same words: “In the name of the Father,” and fire descended; “of the Son,” and water rose; “of the Holy Spirit,” and he handed him the tile whole again. Arius then said, “The words may be human, but the deed is the Lord’s.” Yet he still did not believe, because when a person permits Satan, the spirit of heresy, to enter him, he calls white black and black white. This Council...

Was convened by Constantine the Great. Although he had not yet received Baptism, he was deeply concerned about the true faith—about which faith was the true one. He presided over this Council, and historical accounts say that he signed the proceedings of the First Ecumenical Council in red ink, sitting not upon a throne but upon a chair. Nor was that the only event that took place there. Something else happened earlier, before the Council began its work: a dialogue between Arius and Saint Achillius, the bishop of Larissa.

How many of you come from the old country and know that city in Thessaly? Their dispute went like this: “So, Arius, Christ is not God?” “No, He is not. He is a creature, the first of the angels, as they say, and so forth. He is the chief servant.” “Then command this stone to bring forth oil.” Arius turned the challenge back on him and said, “You command it.” Achillius then said, “In the name of the Holy Trinity, let oil come forth,” and oil flowed from the stone. That was the first miracle. The second was the miracle of Saint Spyridon. And the third...

Because Arius was saying many improper things and no one had managed to silence him, the gentle Saint Nicholas raised his hand and struck him during the Council, before everyone. According to the rules, the Council should have been suspended and his hand cut off, because he had struck someone in the presence of the emperor, who in this case was Saint Constantine. Instead, they considered it best to strip him of his episcopal vestments, imprison him, and postpone the cutting off of his hand until the Council had completed its work.

So Nicholas was in prison, stripped of his episcopal vestments, when Christ came to him there together with the Most Holy Theotokos. They found him and asked, “What are you doing here, Nicholas? How did you come to be here?” He replied, “For the love of the Lord.” Christ then gave him a Gospel book, which you will always see him holding prominently in his icons, while the Most Holy Theotokos gave him an omophorion, another distinctive feature of his icons. If you look at an icon of Saint Nicholas, you will see Christ above him on one side and the Most Holy Theotokos on the other. This portrays their visit to him in the prison at Nicaea, where they blessed the hand with which he had, so to speak, thunderously rebuked Arius by striking him.

These were miracles at the First Ecumenical Council. There was also a fourth, though I do not know exactly what it was, performed by another participant in the Council named Kourdounis. I tell you these things because, as I travel around America and Canada, I see that people do not hold firmly to their faith. They are carried away by the various theories we hear and by what we see on television. The entire Protestant world has something to say against Orthodoxy. The children are wearing themselves out insulting their mother, because none of them has firm foundations or any real connection with the Church.

Those of us living abroad did not leave our homeland because of our faith, nor did we come here in search of faith. We came here to improve our lives. Even so, we ought to possess faith—and a strong faith at that—because spiritually this place is like the North Pole. Your faith freezes here. Your faith is lost here. Most of us—and I take myself as an example—left while still young to seek our fortune, not to seek religion, and we found ourselves here in this Hell, where everyone believes whatever he wants, says whatever he wants, and promotes whatever he wants.

In America, indeed, there are broadcasters who dominate television here around the clock. They have the entire twenty-four hours, day and night, and they speak against Orthodoxy. For the most part, religion has been turned into a matter of dollars and money, and they speak against the Church, against the clergy, against the Saints, against the Most Holy Theotokos, against fasting—against everything, that is, through which a person may be saved. If these things are removed, there is no salvation. A person will live like an animal and nothing more. There are no true ideals outside Orthodoxy. Orthodoxy is what sustains and blesses the world today. If the world today receives any blessing, here or anywhere else, it receives it through Orthodoxy. The only altar which, when it is established...

Enables you to commune with God is the Orthodox altar. There is no other. The others have no Holy Table, nor do they have the Body and Blood of Christ, metanoia and Holy Confession, fasting, or self-restraint. People understand all these things, because the founders of their religions are not gods; they are human beings, and it is natural for human beings to establish human laws. But Christ’s Church, the Orthodox Church, has established divine things—divine things. I shall give you a simple way to keep this in mind, if you ever wish to save your soul. You yourselves might also be asked, “Which, finally, is the true faith? How did you find it among so many thousands of kinds of faith?” You must go back and discover...

Who its founder is. Suppose a Roman Catholic comes along. “What are you?” “I am a Catholic.” “Very well. Who stands at your head? Whom do you obey? What is your foundation? Where do you begin?” If you keep going back and back, you must eventually reach the year 1054. There you will come upon a pope, and everything will lead into the embrace of the papacy. The pope will be declared infallible, will stand above every other dignitary, and will claim that he alone possesses authority. He goes to crown you and says, “I crown you.” He goes to baptize you and says, “I baptize you.” He goes to hear your confession and says, “I forgive you.” I, I, I.

Now consider the Protestant. It has been more than four hundred years since 1519, apart from all the other groups that have appeared since then. “Where do you belong? Who is your founder?” If you trace the movement backward, you must reach 1519, when Luther protested against papal authority and the despotism of the pope. Luther was a Roman Catholic priest, and because, when the pope issued indulgences, he was not given any to sell and make money from, he turned against him, began accusing him, and established his own religion. That religion has broken into another fragment with every passing year and has now become thousands of pieces. Protestants—Lutherans, Baptists, and the rest—have a human being as their founder. The papists have a pope as their head.

Whom do the Muslims have? Muhammad. Let us go to the Mormons; whom do they have? A supposed revelation from an angel, and so forth. Let us go, for example, to the Zoroastrians; whom do they have? They too have some human being. Now come up to Orthodoxy. Whom do you have? Where do you go? How far back do you reach, my friends? Let us take a priest. “Come here, Father. Where did you come from? Who ordained you?” “Such-and-such a bishop ordained me.” “Come here, Bishop. Who ordained you?” “Those two bishops ordained me.” “Come here, you two bishops. Who ordained you?” “Those bishops.” Back and back and back we go. Do you know where we finally arrive? At the Upper Room and the Apostles. Ordination begins there, where Christ appeared on the evening of the Resurrection and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit,” and so forth. It continues from the moment when tongues like fire rested upon their heads—the event we Orthodox Christians will celebrate the day after tomorrow as Pentecost in our Church. This is the source from which Apostolic Succession has come down to us.

Christ founded one Church. Human whims, vested interests, Satan, ego, and the rest created all these other offshoots, which are not of God. What concerns a person most deeply is the question of death. Beyond death lies the Resurrection. So what does a person want to know? Is there anything beyond the grave?

Because if there is nothing beyond the grave, if everything ends at the grave, then we might as well lose our minds right now. If this present life is all there is—if we live here merely to eat a few potatoes and a little meat—then it is all utterly absurd. To say that man’s purpose in coming here is to eat steaks and eggplants is ridiculous. Unless we have courage within us, unless we have faith that something exists beyond the grave, then with all the tribulation in this world, all the toil, pain, and evil, life would not be worth living even for a single second.

But what consoles a person and gives him strength to endure all these things—to grow weary, to labor, to forgive, to struggle, and so forth—is life beyond the grave. Can Luther tell us whether there is life beyond the grave? Can the Pope tell us? Can Russell, the founder of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, tell us? Can Buddha? Who can tell us this? No one. They cannot promise us anything beyond the grave. Why? Do you know why? If you go to Mecca, you will find Muhammad there in his grave. If you go to India, you will find Buddha in his grave. If you go to the Papal Church, all the Popes are buried there. And if you go looking for Luther, you will find him in his grave. But if you go looking for Christ—for Jesus, the Crucified One, the Nazarene—

you will find His tomb empty: “He is not here; He is risen.” The only tombs that are empty are those of Christ, the founder of our faith, and of His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos. I do not know whether you have been to Jerusalem. If you go there, you will find two empty tombs: that of the Author of life and that of the Mother of Life, the Most Holy Theotokos. These two tombs, one at Golgotha and the other in Gethsemane, are empty. I have venerated them five times, in five consecutive years. Anyone who has been there will confirm what I am saying, and if you go yourselves, you too will see that it is true. The Jews guard these tombs to this day; the Arabs guard them to this day; and all the heretics of the world know of them, yet they cannot say a word against them. And every year, on Great and Holy Saturday, before the eyes of all these cunning men—the officials, the governments—

the ambassadors, and all the people gathered there, Christ gives us the light of the Resurrection from His tomb, from above the stone—and He gives it only to the Orthodox, to no one else. The Copts, the Ethiopians, and the Syrians receive it from us; no one can rob God of what is His. They can do nothing. Let them build themselves a Golgotha upon some rock...

Let them place a tomb there upon a rock and say that Christ was crucified there. What history would support them? The true place is the one preserved there, where the Jews themselves witnessed these events. The Catholics, although in many years we celebrate the Resurrection on the same day, do not say that they light their candles from us. That is why the Catholics have placed their emphasis on Christmas rather than on Pascha.

So, before the eyes of all the world, for two thousand years this tomb has given forth the light of the Resurrection. We receive it at noon on Great and Holy Saturday, not at night, when we go to church and sing, “Come, receive the light.” The light of the Resurrection is given on Saturday at midday. Between eleven and one, a service takes place, and the Orthodox Patriarch receives the light; from the Orthodox Patriarch, all the other offshoots receive it. Inside the tomb there is a chamber with two large openings, and through them the light is passed to the others. They receive it from outside and distribute it to their own people.

In the year 1574, the Armenians paid the Turkish authorities, because they controlled the place at that time. Forgive me. My dear people, in Jerusalem we Orthodox are very few. The Jews and Arabs hold Jerusalem and govern there. We have been left with almost nothing; we fast and struggle, and our numbers have dwindled. There are only 105 clergy for the whole of Palestine. What can they possibly preserve?

So, in 1574, the Armenians paid the Turks not to allow our Patriarch to enter the tomb on Great and Holy Saturday to receive the light of the Resurrection, but to let their own Patriarch enter instead. Their Patriarch went in, and the doors of the Church were shut so that the Orthodox Patriarch could not enter when he arrived. The Armenian Patriarch remained inside for more than two hours, but no light was given to him. When the Orthodox Patriarch arrived outside with his procession, he found the doors closed. He stood there outside, praying and weeping, because he believed this had happened on account of his many sins. Now, at the great doorway of the Church of the Resurrection...

there are three columns on one side and three on the other. As the Patriarch stood there, the middle column on the left split open, and the light came forth. There was a great crash, as though a bomb had exploded, and the light of the Resurrection appeared. The Patriarch lit his torches from it and gave the light to the people, while the Armenian Patriarch was left inside empty-handed. Moreover, a Turkish guard who was standing above cried out that this was the true God. The Armenians seized him and killed him, and his blood can still be seen there by the doorway to this day. As for the relics of that Turkish martyr...

they are kept at the Monastery of the Great Panagia, one of the twenty monasteries surrounding the All-Holy Sepulchre. It is called the Great Panagia, and the relics are perfectly white; one can see that they truly belong to a saintly man. The column also remains there, split open as though by God Himself. When an Orthodox Christian makes a prostration there and venerates the relic, he perceives the same fragrance that fills the All-Holy Sepulchre. We are not dealing with fairy tales. We are not dealing with the theories of every charlatan who came along and founded a religion. We are speaking of Christ Himself, who has left His marks there. With evidence such as this, we can answer the heterodox forcefully, without accepting any compromise or dilution of our faith. Let them show us tangible things like these—miracles both contemporary and enduring—and then I will stand with them. But no one can do that. And so we are acting very wrongly.

We do not cherish this precious treasure called the true faith. For He who rose and left His tomb empty will also raise us up. But those others, who could not rise and remained in their graves, will raise neither us nor their followers. And yet we treat religion as though it were the cheapest and least important thing. For every other subject—learning a language, mastering a trade, studying a science—we sit at a desk until we wear out who knows how many pairs of trousers. But when it comes to matters of faith, we say, “Oh, I learned all that at school.” What did you learn at school? What do you know from school? A person knows nothing. He has scarcely any knowledge of the faith, and yet he insists that God must save him no matter what. Save you from what, when you show no interest at all? There are even people who have grown old and still do not know how to make the sign of the Cross. Go into a Church one day and stand beside some elderly people...

or even educated people, and you will see them merely stirring the air with their hands. They themselves do not know what they are making. What are they supposed to be making? The Cross. They have not even learned to make it with heartfelt faith. It is simply not there. So how, my good man, do you expect to be saved? In any case, what I am saying is that we have abundant light concerning our faith, if we desire it. Yet even then, you are free not to accept it, because Christ’s faith is the only religion that seeks willing followers. Papism, for example, has historically been advanced by fire and sword. Many people were slaughtered in efforts to make it prevail, and political means have also been used to advance it, even to this day.

If we defect, Christ will not hand us over unless we ourselves choose to surrender. For this reason, especially you who live entirely in a foreign land, must take care and remain close to the true faith of Orthodoxy, because you have received abundant light. You know that what you believe is true, because the miracles of God are present in your life. Let one of these people come and show us a single saint—just one. I am not asking them to show us the twelve or thirteen million martyrs and saints whom we have. Let them show us one. Let the Protestants come and name one saint.

We can begin in Corfu and travel down through Greece, showing them whole multitudes of saints—in Loutraki, at the shrine of Saint John the Russian, and elsewhere. And that is without even mentioning the other relics that have been taken from us.

The Russians possess more than eighty incorrupt relics, preserved whole to this day. And if we wish to silence those who oppose us and prove them wrong, even the demons bear witness against them. When a possessed person stands before Saint Gerasimos, you will hear the demon shriek and burn. When the devil himself confesses the truth and man shuts his mouth, do you understand what that means? Then you go to Saint Nektarios. Until now we had the monk, and now we also have the bishop, for Saint Nektarios too has grace against unclean spirits. In other words, we receive a lesson from the negative side: the devil himself teaches us Orthodoxy and shows us where the truth is. Let them come and explain these things. Let them come and smell the fragrance. Let them present us with something. But they have nothing to offer. They are empty, and that is why we too feel empty here in a foreign land. Last year I went to Montreal to distribute a few small crosses that...

I had brought from the All-Holy Sepulchre, and a hundred people nearly trampled one another. People came pouring down from the balconies to receive what? A tiny cross, some small blessing. So empty, so utterly hollow does a person feel here in a foreign land. Back home, if something happens, you can run to Saint Nektarios; you can go to the Most Holy Theotokos on Tinos; you can go to Rogovou, to Malevi, and to other holy places.

You can go and obtain an icon; you can go to some holy place. But here, where can you go? There are few priests. Where can you go? Everything is concrete. Where can you go? There is no spiritual life; there is no grace. We want nothing from these people, no religion that they might offer us. Orthodoxy alone gives substance and meaning to a person’s life. Do you understand?

I say, then, that we must make every effort to heed what Christ has told us. Here where we live, we must be of one mind and love one another. We must live as Orthodox Christians, because Satan divides people in order to rule over them. Here you will also hear many arguments against the clergy. Satan especially wants to destroy the clergy here, and all these heresies have no Holy Orders. Since they have no Holy Orders themselves, they do not want anyone else to have them either. Once a trap caught a fox by the tail and cut it off. The fox then went out and proclaimed that cutting off one’s tail was fashionable, hoping all the other foxes would cut off theirs too, because its own tail was gone. That is what these people are doing now: they condemn our clergy. Yet the Protestants themselves, for example, make every person a clergyman. At every gathering, each one takes a plate and goes around with a little bread and wine—something we could just as easily eat at home.

It is the priest who has the authority. He has received from God the power to do this. Let all the cardinals in the world gather and read prayers over some water. Will it become the blessing of water, the Agiasmos? Never. But take an Orthodox priest—even if he is sinful—and let him read the prayers over it, and that water will not spoil for a thousand years. In our home we have Agiasmos that is seventy years old, crystal clear. What can they tell us? The Orthodox Christian does not rely on mere belief; he has knowledge—he can hold the proof in his own hands. He has knowledge; he can hold it in his own hands. Let them all gather and try to change the bread into the Body and the wine into the Blood. They cannot do it. They cannot, because these things are not accomplished by the clergy themselves, but by the grace that works through the clergy. What did I tell you earlier? Someone says, “I forgive you.” Where did you get that from?

Where did you get that power? Is that what our priest says when you go to Holy Confession? What does he say? “You, O Lord, who said, ‘Whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed, and whatever you bind shall be bound,’ loose also this servant of Yours.” Not “I forgive you,” but “You, O Lord.” Someone says, “I crown you.” Really? What does our priest say? “The servant of God, so-and-so, is crowned unto the handmaid of God, so-and-so, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” He is crowned; it is not I who crown him. The Holy Trinity crowns him. Another says, “I baptize you.” Is that how it is? “The servant of God is baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” If the priest is sinful, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit do not depend upon him.

The Holy Trinity is not sinful. It is the Holy Trinity. You see, then, that our priest is an instrument. He is not a representative. The one who is called a representative is the Pope—as though God had gone away somewhere and the Pope were representing Him. That is why theirs is a worldly church. But this is not what happens among us. The faithful must know this; the Orthodox Christian must understand how these things truly stand. It is good for the priest to be a saint, though he may not be. But what concern is that of mine? I will receive what I came for. When he puts on the epitrachelion and begins, “Blessed is our God,” he is holy in his ministry. You should not place your own sins upon him; that is another matter altogether. For me, at that moment, he is holy, because Christ works through him, accomplishing the sacred ministry and the sanctification of the human person.

Do not remain outside and far away from the Church because, supposedly, a priest did this or that. Of the thousand accusations made against priests, nine hundred and ninety-nine are lies. The priesthood is the one bridge Satan fears, and he is determined to destroy it. Besides, why do you not become a priest yourself, or encourage your child to become one? Or do you have no need of the Church? If you die tomorrow and there is no one to bury you, then we shall discuss it. If you die tomorrow and there is no one to read even a Trisagion for you afterward, then we shall discuss it. We have concerned ourselves with nothing else, but day and night, like a mouse gnawing—crunch, crunch, crunch—we keep attacking the clergy from every direction. The clergy will be taken away from us.

Let the churches be taken from us, and then people will have to devour one another. Then we shall understand the harm we have done. Today we offer nothing to the Church, yet we also accuse the Church. Go and take that place yourself. What do you expect? Do you want us to have John Chrysostoms today? Do you want Basils and Athanasiuses? Where are we to find them? If you and I, if a good family, will give neither a child to the Church nor ourselves, who will? Shall we place an order with Europe to send us priests packed in tins? Do we not produce our own engineers, electronics specialists, and scientists? Do we not produce every kind of wickedness as well? Why do we not produce priests? Why do we not offer someone for the priesthood, while expecting the Church to enjoy honor and stand exalted? A person must understand what it means to give a priest to the Church. There is no greater honor.

What is earthly majesty? What is kingship beside the priesthood? What is even an angel beside a priest? Concerning the angels it is written, “He makes His angels spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire.” The angels are servants, but the priest is a friend—a friend. Do you know what Saint Kosmas of Aetolia says? If you have one seat and before you stand a king and a priest, give the seat to the priest. And if you have one seat and before you stand an angel and a priest, give the seat to the priest, not to the angel. Unfortunately...

We are uninstructed in these matters, yet we demand saints, though we ourselves have offered nothing. “The bishop did not send us a priest.” Where is the bishop supposed to find one? Do priests hatch from eggs? Where is he to find a priest to send you, when you—the village, the parish, the whole community—give him no men to ordain? Where are we to find them? How are they to arise? I tell you, we shall learn and understand the harm we have done when the time comes and there is no one to bury us and no one to serve a memorial for us afterward. Then we shall understand what a priest means, even if he is sinful. Even if he is sinful. For this, my beloved, is the society we have today. We have no better material. Can you imagine?

Society is like a kneading trough filled with dough. You take some of it and make a loaf of bread. You take from the same dough and make a long loaf. You take from the same dough and make bread rings. You take from the same dough and make rusks. And you take from the same dough and make prosphora. The priest comes from the same lump of dough; this is the dough we have today. This is society today. A mother sits her child in front of Mickey Mouse so that she can do her nails, talk on the telephone, and not be disturbed. Should the child fast? She does not teach him to fast. Should he pray? Nothing. Should he go to Holy Confession when he grows older? And then tell me: if that child decides to become a priest, what sort of priest will he be? Society cannot form these things in him.

The mother must form them; the home must form them. But today there is no family. Today the family is like a transit station. The mother comes home whenever she wishes, the father whenever he wishes, the son and daughter whenever they wish, and so forth. They merely live beneath the same roof, with entirely separate choices and separate inner lives. How can this child, after all that he has seen and filled his head with here, become a priest and bear the Mysteries, bearing God in his hands? For he does bear God in his hands. However sinful that poor priest may be, he bears God in his hands. And when God condescends to be carried by this sinful person, who are you and I to pass judgment and say that the priest is unworthy? Take the most sinful priest in the world and have him read the prayers over...

...a bowl of water for the Agiasmos. Let us see whether it spoils. It will not spoil. Then go to a Catholic priest, with his white collar and all his learning, and ask him to bless water. It will stink within an hour. They do not have the Agiasmos, and whatever they do have is salted so that it will keep. Examine it and you will see: it has been salted to preserve it. They do not have the grace of the Holy Spirit. And shall we fail to value what we possess? It is a great thing. They may be human beings, yes, but they are not Christians. There is no Holy Eucharist there. Let no one tamper with our faith. We can see the truth of our faith. Yet many people remain far away because, supposedly, the clergy are not what they should be. I say the same thing: bring me someone better. Offer yourself, as I should offer myself; offer our children. Who has ever considered this and prayed to Christ, saying, “Christ, enter my home as well...”

“Of my two children, take one for the Church.” What could be greater than this? In the old days, when people gave hospitality in their home to a clergyman—a priest, a monk, or anyone in the religious life—after he washed in the morning, they would go to the washbasin, gather any hairs left there by the monk or priest, and make them into a small devotional keepsake. That was how deeply they revered the faith. Today we insult the clergy from morning until night. God will mow them down; He will take them away from us. It is the same with churches: we ask for them, but we do not attend them. We act as though we do not need them. You may have heard what happened recently during the earthquakes in our homeland: first the village churches fell, and afterward the houses fell.

I do not know whether any of you come from the region of Corinthia or Boeotia. In Perachora the two churches—the Archangels and the Most Holy Theotokos—fell first, and afterward the houses fell. In Plataea, the Church of Saint Nicholas fell during the night, and then the houses fell the following day. It was as though God were saying, “You do not need the churches except at Pascha, when some of you come to receive the light, or on the Sundays when you happen to attend the Divine Liturgy.” We make many mistakes precisely where we ought not to make them. We admire everyone else, yet we neither marvel at what we ourselves have received nor lament our own condition. We should marvel at ourselves because of what God has given us, but we should also lament because we do not value it as we should. The divine John Chrysostom tells us, “God does not ordain all men, but He works through all.” God does not ordain every man. Do not shout “Worthy!” merely because the deacon has a fine voice, speaks beautifully, chants well, and so forth. God, however, does not...

...personally confirm that man or number him among His own, yet He still works through him. When you see a police officer, do you ask whether he is dishonest, whether he has abandoned his wife, whether he is perverse or homosexual, or anything else? You do not. What do you see? He bears the insignia and the crown upon his uniform; he raises his hand, and you understand: here is the police, here is the authority of the state. Apply the same understanding to the faith and to the Church. You do not ask an air marshal for a certificate proving what sort of man he is. You do not ask the butcher, the pilot who carries you, the driver who takes you on the trolleybus, or anyone else. Only here, with the priest, do you ask.

We ought to understand that someone else is whispering this into our ears, so that we will remove this institution from our midst. And once the priesthood has been removed, woe to us. I do not know whether you have ever read...

...the prophecy attributed to Agathangelos. It is a small book containing a prophecy of Agathangelos about things that were to come. It was written in Sicily in the year 1200 and has circulated in one edition after another down to the present day. In one chapter it says the following. It speaks of Germany before Germany had even become Protestant, while it was still Orthodox, and says: “Woe, woe, Germany, for you abolished the clergy through whom you worshiped God.” In other words, it foresaw prophetically that Protestantism would arise, that the clergy would be abolished, that the sacrifice would cease, that the receiving of the Holy Gifts would cease, and with it the relationship with Heaven.

You see what became of Germany and how it was destroyed. The labor of all those years was destroyed, and now it is beginning again from the start, yet it still has not learned its lesson. It will suffer still more. Yet, as the Fathers and the prophecies say, it will be the first to believe again in Christianity. Germany will be the first to believe, and Germany will greatly help us amid the closely approaching events: the devastation of the world and the great war now threatening us. But the matter of our faith must occupy us, trouble us, and concern us, and we must remain close to the place where God has set us. Here, as you go about, move among people, and work because you must, you hear many words spoken even against our Most Holy Theotokos. They do not want to understand...

...who the Theotokos is. Unfortunately, we Orthodox treat her as a servant on the one hand, whenever something happens—“Most Holy Theotokos, help!” and “Most Holy Theotokos, come quickly!”—while on the other hand we blaspheme her. Nevertheless, she still bears with us. Many people, however, are shaken and cannot accept the title “Most Holy.” But it is true. She is not merely a saint; she is the Most Holy Theotokos. She is not merely a queen, but the Queen of all. Do not be scandalized; that is how things truly are. These gentlemen want to settle everything solely from the written text: “Does Scripture say it?” Where does Scripture tell you that the book you are holding is the Gospel? Who told you, sir, that what you hold in your hands is Holy Scripture, that it is the Gospel?

How do you know this is not a work by Kazantzakis, or something written by someone else? On what basis do you insist that this text says what you claim it says, and that what you know is correct? Do you understand what it means to speak about a child while rejecting his mother, as the Jehovah’s Witnesses do when they call God the Father but deny that Christ is the Son? If Christ is not the Son, how is God the Father? How is God the Father? If Christ is not His Son, in what sense is He Father? As long as I have no child, am I a father? I am a husband, but I am not a father. If my wife has no child, is she a mother? She is my wife, but she is not a mother. How, then, can I be...

...so foolish? It is because we never received instruction and never read. Our mother did not teach us even one “Our Father,” and we went and sat in the coffeehouse, like those who have now left everything behind.

Churches may collapse around them in the disaster, yet the people sit in the coffeehouses. Where, then, does it say that this Scripture is Holy Scripture? It is Tradition gathered into a collection, received through another ear and another eye. Tradition selected these writings, placed them on the shelf, and told you, “This, my child, is Holy Scripture,” and you accepted it. And now you take the child of Tradition and reject its mother! That is utterly absurd—utterly absurd. The priest sets it before you! Holy Scripture says—and Peter himself says this—that we saw His glory from close at hand and heard the Father declare, “This is My beloved Son; listen to Him,” on the holy mountain. They were there on Tabor, when a cloud overshadowed them, as we read in the seventeenth chapter of Matthew, and from within it came the voice: “This is My beloved Son; listen to Him.” Peter was the one who proposed that they remain there and build three tents for Elijah, Christ, and Moses, so that they would not go down and Christ would not be killed. Then God intervened and spoke these words to him. Peter recounts this in his epistle: “We heard these things ourselves, there before Him. We are eyewitnesses; we were on the holy mountain.” Which holy mountain is this, sir, you who are a Protestant? Which epistle speaks of it? It is Mount Tabor. These things took place there.

The mountain is holy. Why? Because the feet of Christ walked upon it. Yes, indeed. And when I go there, I kneel down and kiss the ground, because the feet of Christ walked upon it. So the soil, the mountain itself, is holy. And His mother, who carried Him for nine months and nursed Him for two years—is she not holy? Yet we foolish people listen when they say, “Of course, Scripture does not say so.” Very well: Scripture says that the ground is holy, yet the Most Holy Theotokos, within whom Christ in all His fullness dwelt, is not holy? Is she not holy? And we Greeks not only blaspheme her in the crudest way, but now we also reject her as a matter of doctrine, saying that she is merely a woman. No, my dear friend, she is not merely a woman. She is the Woman.

“Behold, the virgin.” Not merely a virgin, but the Virgin. “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Emmanuel.” If we too were willing to look a little more deeply, we would find that what we have received is true. The Roman Catholics took our Most Holy Theotokos and made her into God. The Protestants cast her down and made her merely a woman—just a good woman named Mary. The Orthodox neither made her God nor cast her down. She is not above Christ; she stands beside Christ. Our Most Holy Theotokos intercedes, and Christ saves. We say, “Most Holy Theotokos, save us,” when we are speaking of an earthquake, smallpox, or some illness—not of doctrine and not of the soul. For the soul we say three times, “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us; save us.”

The Most Holy Theotokos intercedes, and Christ saves. The Royal Doors stand between them. We know these things, and they do not contradict us. Yet these people tell us their foolishness, and we swallow it and begin to harbor evil thoughts against our Most Holy Theotokos, as though she were nothing. She is neither merely a woman nor God, even though others have made her into God. I do not know whether you are aware of this. This is also why, the speaker claims, Roman Catholics make the sign of the Cross with five fingers: the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Pope, because they regard the Pope as God. The Most Holy Theotokos is not above Christ; she is beside Him. She too bore ancestral sin, and at the Annunciation she was cleansed, and she said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” God is her God as well. And she is not merely a woman to be cast down by the Protestants. She is the Woman, the Virgin, the Maiden. The definite article shows that she is the one, and there is no other. We place her at the right hand

on the basis of what David says about our Most Holy Theotokos in Psalm 44: “The queen stood at Your right hand, clothed in a garment woven with gold and arrayed in many colors.” And when you bake prosphora and take it to the Church, it bears the portion of the Most Holy Theotokos. When the priest removes the Lamb, which represents Christ, and places it on the diskos, he also removes the portion of the Most Holy Theotokos, places it on the right, and recites these words of David: “The queen stood at Your right hand, clothed in a garment woven with gold and arrayed in many colors.” Pay close attention to this, because our Most Holy Theotokos is a very important subject.

Do not listen to what the Roman Catholics do, for they blaspheme. You know, the Roman Catholics even teach that she entered into Holy Matrimony with Joseph. They have established the teaching that our Most Holy Theotokos was crowned in marriage to Joseph. You understand where this leads. They are uninstructed, because Scripture mentions certain children

as the brothers of Christ, and so they conclude that the Most Holy Theotokos bore them. But that is not so either. I want you to know that those who are called the brothers of Christ were the children of Cleopas, Joseph’s brother. They were not even Joseph’s children by an earlier wife. They were the children of Cleopas, Joseph’s brother. There were six of them. If our Most Holy Theotokos had four sons and two daughters—six children in all—would Christ, from the Cross, have entrusted her to John and said to her, “Behold your son”? If the Most Holy Theotokos still had six children, would she have gone away with John, and would her children have allowed her to do so? How could that have happened? And would John have accepted her when Christ said, “Behold your mother,” taken her into his home, and had her live there until she died at the age of fifty-nine, after which she was buried in Gethsemane? Could these things have happened if she had six children? We treat her with contempt because we have never seriously studied the true teaching of our faith. For us, there is no difficulty at all.

Everything has been resolved. Do they not also cast aside the Saints? They reject the Most Holy Theotokos as an intercessor. “There is one mediator,” they say—and you have surely heard this—“between God and mankind: Jesus.” One mediator, as though we claimed there were two. “Then why do you appeal to the Most Holy Theotokos? Where do you place her?” Be sure you know how to answer. Here is God, here is Christ, and here is the believer, the human person. Paul says—and they repeat it endlessly—“Between God and mankind is Jesus Christ.” Therefore, whenever we desire something from the Father, we ask for it through Jesus. Agreed. But what do we mean when we ask our Most Holy Theotokos to intercede? Where do we place her? Do we tell Christ to step aside so that she may take His place? That is not what we say. What do we say? “Intercede...”

She speaks to the Son: “Intercede with Him who was born of you, O Lady Theotokos.” And what else do we say? “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us; O Savior, save us, O God.” We state this clearly in our Church. No one can deceive us on this subject. They cast the Saints aside. “What do the Saints matter?” they say. “Go directly to God. Otherwise, you insult God.” Really? How do I insult Him?

I am speaking about His Saints. Are His Saints not His friends? Does Holy Scripture not say in Psalm 150, “Praise God in His saints”? Is God not glorified when a Saint works a miracle? I go to Saint Spyridon or Saint Nektarios and say, “Please, this is what has happened to me,” and a miracle takes place. Who performed it? Saint Nektarios? Saint Spyridon? Christ performed it through the Saint. After all, what do the dismissal hymns say? Let us take the one for Saint Spyridon: “You were revealed as a champion of the First Council and a wonderworker, O God-bearing Spyridon, our father. Therefore you spoke to one dead in the tomb, changed a serpent into gold, and, while chanting your holy prayers, had angels concelebrating with you, O most sacred one. Glory to Him who glorified you.”

“Glory to Him who crowned you; glory to Him who, through you, grants healing to all.” Who grants the healings? Christ. Glory, then, belongs to Him. Glory, glory, glory. Where, my dear sir, does Spyridon take the glory for himself? Is Saint Spyridon nothing, then? The glory goes to Christ. So where does the Orthodox Christian go wrong? Not even our Most Holy Theotokos can perform a miracle by herself unless Christ gives His assent. Everything must come from Christ and from the blessing of Christ. And when many people call out at once, “Saint Nicholas, come here!” and “Saint Nicholas, come there!” Saint Nicholas will go to one place, while an angel will go in his stead to the other. We possess answers to all these questions, provided that we understand these things and remain steadfast in our true faith. I thought I might offer these few words to your love this evening, on the occasion given to us by these Saints, Equal-to-the-Apostles Constantine and Helen, and pray that the holy God

may preserve you in the true faith.

Ο Χριστός έκανε μία Εκκλησία. Τα καπρίτσια, τα συμφέροντα, ο σατανάς, το εγώ και λοιπά έκαμαν τα άλλα όλα αυτά τα παρακλάδια, τα οποία δεν είναι του Θεού. Εκείνο που απασχολεί τον άνθρωπο ιδιαιτέρως είναι το θέμα του θανάτου. Πίσω από τον θάνατο υπάρχει η Ανάσταση. Τι τότε τον ενδιαφέρει τον άνθρωπο; Υπάρχει τίποτα πέραν του τάφου;

Χρονιά, το 1574, οι Αρμένιοι επλήρωσαν τους Τουρκαλάδες, διότι αυτοί... Σας ευχαριστώ. Άνθρωποί μας, εμείς όλοι-όλοι στα Ιεροσόλυμα. Οι Εβραίοι και οι Άραβες το έχουν, τα Ιεροσόλυμα, αυτοί διοικούν εκεί πέρα. Εμείς είμαστε άστεγοι, νηστούνε, χαθήκαμε. 105 κληρικοί υπάρχουν για όλη την Παλαιστίνη. Τι να κρατήσουν;

Θα πας, θα πάρεις μια εικόνα, θα πας κάπου. Αλλά πού να πας; Λίγοι παπάδες είναι. Πού να πας; Σε τσιμέντα είναι. Πού να πας; Δεν υπάρχει πνεύμα, δεν υπάρχει χάρη. Δεν θέλουμε τίποτα να μας προσφέρουν αυτοί, καμία θρησκεία. Μόνο η Ορθοδοξία είναι εκείνη η οποία δίδει στον άνθρωπο περιεχόμενο, δηλαδή. Καταλάβατε;

Είναι εκείνος που έχει το δικαίωμα. Αυτός επήρε την εξουσία από τον Θεό να κάνει αυτό το πράγμα. Ας μαζευτούν όλοι οι καρδινάλιοι του κόσμου να διαβάσουν λίγο νερό. Θα γίνει αγιασμός; Ποτέ. Θα πάρεις έναν παπά Ορθόδοξον, ας είναι αμαρτωλός, και διαβάσει, αυτό δεν θα χαλάσει χίλια χρόνια. Εμείς έχουμε σπίτι μας 70 ετών αγιασμό, ολόλευκο. Τι θα μας πούνε; Δεν χρειάζεται πίστη ο Ορθόδοξος, έχει γνώση, το πιάνει στα χέρια του. Έχει γνώση, το πιάνει στα χέρια του. Ας μαζευτούνε όλοι να μας μεταβάλουν τον άρτον σε σώμα και τον οίνον εις αίμα. Δεν το μπορούν, δεν το μπορούν, διότι όλα αυτά δεν γίνονται διά του κλήρου, γίνονται διά της χάριτος μέσα του κλήρου. Τι σας είπα γρηγορότερα; «Εγώ», λέει, «σε συγχωρώ». Πού το βρήκες;

Αδιάβαστοι στα θέματα αυτά και ζητάμε Αγίους, εφόσον δεν δώσαμε τίποτα εμείς. Δεν μας έστειλε ο Δεσπότης. Πού να τον βρει ο Δεσπότης; Μήπως από αυγό βγαίνουνε οι παπάδες; Πού να τον βρει να σου τον στείλει ο Δεσπότης; Εφόσον εσύ, το χωριό, εφόσον εσύ, η ενορία, εφόσον εσύ, η πολιτεία, δεν του δίνεις ανθρώπους να σου χειροτονήσει. Πού να βρούμε, πού θα γίνουμε; Και λέγω, θα το μάθουμε και θα το καταλάβουμε τι κακό κάναμε στη ζωή μας, εξαιτίας όταν θα φτάσει η στιγμή που δεν θα υπάρχει άνθρωπος να μας κηδέψει και δεν θα υπάρχει άνθρωπος να μας διαβάσει ένα μνημόσυνο εκ των υστέρων. Τότε θα καταλάβουμε τι πάει να πει ο παπάς, έστω και αμαρτωλός. Έστω και αμαρτωλός. Διότι αυτή είναι, αγαπητοί μου, σήμερα η κοινωνία. Δεν έχουμε καλύτερο υλικό. Θα φανταστείτε;

το πρόσωπο της Θεοτόκου, τι είναι. Εμείς οι Ορθόδοξοι, δυστυχώς, από το ένα μέρος τη φωνάζουμε ως υπηρέτρια, άμα συμβεί κάτι: «Παναγία, βοήθα» και «Παναγία, τρέξε», από το άλλο μέρος τη βλαστημούμε. Εν πάση περιπτώσει, μας ανέχεται ακόμα. Πολλοί όμως κλονίζονται και δεν μπορούν να δεχτούν αυτή τη λέξη, «Παναγία». Είναι αλήθεια. Δεν είναι απλώς Αγία, είναι Παναγία. Δεν είναι απλώς άνασσα, βασίλισσα, αλλά είναι Πανάνασσα. Μη σκανδαλίζεστε, έτσι είναι το θέμα. Όλα αυτά θέλουν να τα λύσουν οι κύριοι αυτοί γραφικώς: «Το λέει η Γραφή;». Πού σου λέει η Γραφή ότι αυτό που κρατάς στο χέρι σου είναι το Ευαγγέλιο; Ποιος σου είπε, κύριε, ότι αυτό που κρατάς στο χέρι σου είναι η Γραφή, είναι το Ευαγγέλιο;

Εισόδια της Θεοτόκου, Διάδοχος Φωτικής, Ευαγγέλιο, Ευαγγέλιο των Ουρανών, Γέννησις της Θεοτόκου, Διάδοχος Φωτικής, Ανάσταση, Ανάσταση, Ανάσταση, Αποκάλυψη, Αντίχριστος, Ευαγγέλιο των Ουρανών, Γέννησις της Θεοτόκου, Διάδοχος Φωτικής, Ανάσταση, τον Πατέρα, μιλάει στον Υιόν: «Πρέσβευε εις τον εκ σου τεχθέντα, ω Δέσποινα Θεοτόκε». Άλλοι τι λένε; «Ταις πρεσβείαις της Θεοτόκου, Σώτερ, σώσον ημάς, Σώτερ, σώσον ημάς, Θεός». Λέμε καθαρά στην Εκκλησία μας εμείς αυτό το πράγμα. Δεν μπορούνε να μας πουλήσουνε κουβέντα για το θέμα αυτό. Μας πετούνε τους Αγίους από τη μέση. «Τι πάει να πει», λέει, «οι Άγιοι; Να πας απευθείας στον Θεό. Προσβάλλεις», λέει, «τον Θεό». Σοβαρά; Πώς τον προσβάλλω;
