Summary
Human beings devote themselves to the visible and perishable body while often neglecting the immortal soul and its spiritual needs. Death is not extinction but the beginning of eternal life, making repentance and readiness for divine judgment essential. God’s present patience offers time for conversion, but each person must freely abandon sin, obey the Gospel, and cooperate with divine grace.

Knowing what man is and what his weaknesses are, the Creator always takes care to remind him not to be led astray. As you know, we consist of two aspects. We are body and soul and spirit. Of course, we cannot see the spirit, and so we often neglect it. What we see most of all is the body, and therefore we concern ourselves with it more.
Absolutely. People have discerned that there is something else within them, something that sustains and governs this body. This body always acts on behalf of someone else. There is another person within man, invisible, who makes use of this outward body—the body over which we labor so anxiously today. And, as you know, how weary we become, how much we suffer, and how often we despair as we wonder how we will manage and cope with the various circumstances of our physical life.
Christ, who created us, as I have said, and who knew man’s weakness, reminds him and tells him to take heed. For, as you know, everything in this world has an end; one day it will all come to an end. Even the things of this world that consume all our concern, anxiety, and care will remain here, because they belong here. We have no right to take them with us when we depart. There is no injustice in this, nor does God wrong us. We brought nothing with us, and we shall take nothing away. We brought nothing into this world, and we shall carry nothing out of it. We merely make use of what is here.
Man must take care to make good use of his sojourn in this world, because it appears that we shall depart from it at a time when we least expect it. In a fraction of a second, a person may pass from this temporary life into eternity. And this is the question he will be asked: Did he make good use of the opportunity? Did he fulfill the purpose for which he came into the world? This is something that should always concern man; yet, apart from a few people, I dare say it is the one thing that does not concern him. When man comes into the world, he imagines that he has come to remain here. That is why many who do not take heed call human beings inhabitants of the earth.
Human beings are not permanent inhabitants of the earth; they are tenants here. According to Saint Paul, man has no lasting city here, but seeks the one that is to come. So when a person realizes that he did not come here to remain, but came in order to depart—and that he departs in order to remain forever—everything changes at once. He will begin to think about that other life as well. You know, we have landed on the moon—a great achievement. Yet we have not come down to earth and faced one truth that is necessary and beneficial for every person: death is not the end. This must become our firm conviction. Death is the beginning of another life, a life that has neither limit nor end. This present life has an end.
Sadly, we see man today tormenting himself, suffering, straining, expanding his reach, conquering, and laying up wealth for this life. Then, one fine day, he leaves it all standing here and departs naked and exposed. If you could follow him there, beyond the grave, you would weep for him from here. If anyone could follow man beyond the grave, he would prepare the darkest funeral wheat for his own departed soul. This is what Christ was telling us here today. This is what He reminded us of today through His Gospel. ‘Do not be anxious,’ He says. Do not work yourself to death; do not drive yourself mad. The world has become filled with anxiety. The world has lost its hesychia, its inner stillness. It has lost its peace.
The world has filled its asylums and brought forth psychiatrists and all the rest. Why? Because man does not believe that he will die. He struggles to live here forever and does not believe in the life to come. This is what creates his anxiety, anguish, and sorrow. And so man suffers today amid such an abundance of good things—such an abundance.
People ought to be supremely happy, yet they are miserable. They have lost their sleep; their nerves are shattered. Why? Because they do not believe in the life to come. And if it were merely another life, simply a change of scenery, then perhaps it would be nothing more than coming and going. But did you hear what He said? Did you pay attention? Did you grasp it?
‘Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.’ I will give you a piece of bread; I will give you a roof over your head; I will give you clothing. I, who feed the birds, though they neither sow nor reap. I, who clothe the flowers, which, as you see, surpass even Solomon in all his glory. You look at them and rejoice, and then the heel of some lawless couple passes over and crushes them. Yet this flower, exposed to the foot of a lawless couple, to the whim of a goat that may eat it, or to whatever else might destroy it, displays a miracle of care and adornment, a color that delights the eyes. And you say, ‘Who would go to all this expense and lavish so much upon these flowers?’
So much for them—and how much more for you! Yet man has not grasped this, and so he torments himself and suffers in this world. He finds no rest, no gladness, no joy, because he has still not learned to distinguish between the soul and the body. The body decays; the body will return to the elements from which it was formed. If you prefer the language of educated people, it consists of a little phosphorus, a little iron, a little fat, a little calcium, and a little water. That is all. But is that man? No, that is not man. Man dwells within it. In this sense, man is the soul that makes use of this earth, this flesh, this temporary and corruptible body.
If man takes heed and remains in communion with the Creator, he makes even this body eternal. Yet today, as you know, these things are neither read nor preached, and many people even find them tiresome. Man today does not want to hear about his death. He does not want to hear about life beyond the grave. Why? Does he not wish to rise again? No; he fears the examination because his affairs are not in order. He has not put his accounts in order. He is a sinner, he remains a sinner, and he fears the audit. Anyone whose books and accounts are not in order always fears an audit. But the person whose finances are in order fears no examination at all. If we do not want the Resurrection and do not believe in life beyond the grave, it is because we remain sinners and want to remain sinners. There is no other reason.
The life to come is to man’s advantage, and he ought to desire it and prepare himself for it. But because he does not want to prepare, he clings to this life and wants to believe only in what he can see. He wants knowledge, not faith. And so death overtakes him—especially today, when the ways of dying have become so very modern. Whole families are wiped out, entire fleets are destroyed, whole neighborhoods perish in a thousand ways: an airplane falls, a car runs off the road, or some other accident occurs. And yet man refuses to come to his senses and take heed. He says, ‘Who has ever gone there? Really, has no one ever gone there? Has anyone ever returned from there and told us what it is like?’ Then do you not believe in Christ? Do you not believe in God? Why, then, do you light candles? Why do you come to His Church?
What is the point? Is the Church a pastime, a means of letting off steam? The Church is meant to be your whole life. What is the Church? Did you hear what was said today? Did you hear that this concerns a Kingdom, not a place of the dead, as people call it? The cemetery is a place of sleep, not merely a place of the dead, and one day you will awaken. The very word ‘cemetery’ presupposes that you are asleep and will awaken, whether you want to or not, whether you believe it or not. Does man believe this? Does he accept it or not? Who has been there? Christ has been there. He was there, came to us, returned there, and now awaits us. He told us in detail that there is life beyond the grave and that death is not the end, but the beginning of another life. If these truths enter man’s nous, his spiritual intellect, I believe he will begin to live differently. He will limit his concern for material and fleshly things and turn toward spiritual things as well. Saint Basil the Great says:
‘Will you not give your soul the better things it deserves, since the soul itself is the better part? The soul comes together with the body and ought to receive what is better. Yet we give it the lesser things, if we give it anything at all. At least divide your care equally,’ he says, ‘half and half—fifty-fifty, as foreigners say. Give it fifty percent. As much as you care for your body, care also for your soul. Just as you feed your body three or four times a day, feed your soul at least once. Just as you wash, tend, and cleanse your body, tend your soul as well. Each has its own nourishment; each has its own life, and each has its own bread.’ But our vision is one-sided. We even regard our children as objects; we do not see them as immortal souls. We look upon them as objects, as ornaments on display.
We see ourselves merely as flesh; we do not see the inward person. If you visit a shrine with a holy spring, you may see a palindrome inscribed above it: ‘Wash your sins, not only your face.’ Wash away your sins too; do not wash only your face when you come here. The same applies in this case. Man has a twofold nature. He has a body with its needs, and he also has a spirit with its needs. How is it that you labor, care, sweat, keep vigil, and agonize for your body, but do nothing for your spirit? What will happen when this spirit departs? Do you know that your spirit is destined for a Kingdom? Listen to what was said today. We imagine that beyond the grave there are vineyards and fields for us to inherit and conquer. Because we have done five good deeds here and have made sure to be good people—without being Christians at all—we assume that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to us.
We heard that this concerns a Kingdom. Who inherits that Kingdom? Ordinary subjects? No, royal children inherit it. What does He say at the Judgment? ‘Come, inherit the Kingdom.’ Who inherits? The relatives. Who inherits? The children. Are we God’s kin? What is this Kingdom that God has prepared from the foundation of the world? Are we children of God? Of course, some who do not understand—and perhaps even some of our educated people—will say that all human beings are children of God. But how are human beings children of God? Is John the Evangelist lying when he says, ‘As many as received Him, to them He gave the authority to become children of God’? My beloved, man is God’s creature; he is God’s creation.
A child of God is one who is a brother of Christ. Yet man does not accept Christ. The world today does not accept Christ. It does not accept the Gospel of Christ because the Gospel reproves its lawless way of life. It reproves the avoidance of having children, dishonest dealings, failure to fast, stealing, lying, false oaths, breaking up married couples, unlawful relationships, and taking another man’s wife. The Gospel reproves him. Man today does not want Christ and does not accept the Gospel, because it exposes his lawless life. How, then, can such a person be a child of God? When the ‘Our Father’ is said, many of us ought to leave the Church. We have no relationship with Him, for He might cry out, ‘On what grounds do you call Me Father?’ What would we answer? For God to be my Father, Christ must be my brother. Those who eat the flesh of Christ and drink the blood of Christ are His brethren.
They enter into communion with Christ. Christ is the Son by nature. If by grace we become Christ’s brothers and sisters, then by extension we shall be children of God. But do we receive Christ? No, we do not. We come to the Church and receive the antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after the Divine Liturgy. We do not even deserve that, and we never ask it, ‘What is your name?’ ‘What is my name? I am called antidoron. That means I am not the Gift; I am given instead of the Gift.’ ‘And what do you do?’ ‘I give a blessing.’ What does the Gift do? The Gift brings salvation. What is the Gift? It is what is in the Holy Chalice. Christ is the Gift. The antidoron is not the Gift. You must receive Christ so that your sins may be forgiven and you may enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Yet for how many years does a person come to Church and receive Holy Communion only at Pascha, Christmas, or some other great feast, without metanoia and repentance, without confession, and without putting his life in order?
And even if he confesses and manages to obtain some leniency, the next day he does exactly the same things again—as we all tend to do. Our fashions remain unchanged, our gluttony remains unchanged, our bed remains unlawful, and our dealings remain dishonest. Yet from the other side comes the claim, ‘But I am worthy.’ How are you worthy? How am I worthy? This is a Kingdom, and a Kingdom requires royal children. To become a royal child, I must face the fact that the blood flowing in me comes from Adam, and yours does too. We are not blue-blooded, as the kings of this world are said to be. To become royal children, we must exchange this blood and receive blood from Christ the King. And here upon the Holy Table, the bread and wine have now become the Body and Blood of Christ. Why has this taken place? So that we may receive the Holy Gifts, enter into communion with Christ, become royal children by grace, and thereby gain the right to the Kingdom. This is the work of the Church: she brings forth royal children.
The Church prepares royal children. But man has not studied or understood the Mystery of the Church. How, then, can he enter the Kingdom that God has prepared from the foundation of the world? Many rest complacently and say, ‘I do not attend Church often; I do not receive Holy Communion or go to confession, because you know what priests are like. But I am a good person. I do good deeds—you have no idea what I do in secret.’ Ah, all the merely good people are in Hell; there is not one of them in Paradise. Then who will enter Paradise, if good people go to Hell? Christians will enter Paradise. A Christian should, as a matter of course, also be a good person. If someone is a Christian but is not a good person, neither will he enter. What, then, does all this mean? Does man know that entering Paradise requires a key, not suitcases? Man’s works are the suitcases.
To enter an apartment, a penthouse, or a palace, you need a key—and here that key is Christ. Do you think it is by chance that Christ has been placed here at the Royal Doors, with the Most Holy Theotokos on the other side? No! When a person comes here, my children, he is struck with awe. What are these two doing here? Why are they here? Behold, the rulers of the Kingdom. The old Adam and the old Eve have been replaced by the new Adam and the new Eve. What had the first two done? They had closed Paradise; they had closed Heaven. The curtain stood here in the middle. Then came the precious Cross, and it opened this way. What is this called? The Royal Doors. Why are they beautiful, and what makes them so? How are they different from the other doors? They are beautiful because here, through the intercessions of the Theotokos, the Savior saves the world. He gives us His Body and Blood, unites us with Himself, and takes us with Him toward the Kingdom of Heaven. The people will now come forward to receive Holy Communion.
Then the priest will come out and say, “Save, O God, Your people, and bless Your inheritance.” What is this inheritance? Are we going to inherit trees? No! What is it, then? Is it those who have eaten their breakfast? It is those who will come to receive Holy Communion. They are the inheritance. How are they the Father’s inheritance? They have become one with Christ and will be children of God. That is why they are His inheritance. These are called the Royal Doors because the human person must pass through here. Where does he wish to go? Is he deluded into thinking that he can reach the Kingdom of Heaven by some way of his own? Will he try to go by that way? The Archangel stands there with his sword. Will he try to find some other way? The Archangel tells him, “You must go through there; there is no other way.” Yet people deceive themselves and remain asleep because they do good deeds, are careful not to step on ants, and do no harm, while they have killed their own souls by keeping themselves far from the Holy Chalice, far from life.
They keep themselves far from the royal Blood, through which they can and must become children of the King in order to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. These things are essential, my beloved. When God Himself comes and says, “I have a Kingdom for you,” you must become a child of the King. When King Paul died some years ago, did we inherit anything? The royal children inherited it. So it is with the Kingdom of Heaven. Let us not come to Church as though it were a pastime. Let us not visit monasteries merely to unwind and add a little variety to our other, lawless life. No. The question is whether I have a relationship with Christ. Here Christ shows mercy and patient endurance; He forgives. But there He is retribution and judgment, and the judgment is severe. Here He forgives when a person repents, makes his confession, and comes into communion with Christ; then he is reconciled with Heaven.
But if a person in this world refuses to put these matters in order, he will face the justice of God there. Let me show you this from what you can see here. If you come to the feet of the honorable Forerunner, you will find an axe there. That axe is the justice of God. For an axe to cut, someone must take it in hand. A gun may be fired, but someone must pull the trigger. We see the justice of God remaining there at his feet. John said long ago that the One coming after him would take up the axe and clear the threshing floor. He had not understood the matter fully. Christ did not clear the threshing floor. He stayed His hand and granted the world an extension of time for repentance: “the acceptable year of the Lord.”
But if people do not repent, one day He will rise, take it up, and clear the threshing floor. Look at all the icons: each has an oil lamp burning before it. An oil lamp burns here before the icon of our Christ as well. Can you tell me—if you have ever noticed, asked, or wondered—why the throne over there has no oil lamp burning before it, even though Christ is depicted there too? Here there are repentance, Holy Confession, Holy Communion, and salvation. There, however, is judgment, and in the judgment there is no mercy. Can I call upon some influential connection there? This is what Holy Scripture says: Take heed, O man. Come here to the Royal Doors. Within, I have the Innkeeper waiting to care for you, to give you of My Blood and show you mercy—I, the Good Samaritan. But if you yourself are unwilling...
Beneath her feet are written the words, “As irrevocable.” And if a person exploits My patient endurance and regards it as weakness, or as proof that I do not exist—for many people think this way because God does not cut off noses and ears as the gods of others are supposed to do, though by that measure many of their own should have been cut off—they imagine that He does not exist or has no power. No, that will not do! Nicholas, I mention you only as an example. God both is and exists, and He has power, but He is longsuffering. If a person does not make good use of his sojourn here, does not repent, and does not confess, one day he will come to that judgment, and there will be no mercy. This is the teaching. We have learned to light candles, and that is good and holy. But have you ever asked what the candle you light means? Have you ever asked whether it is a confession that you are light in the world and that you offer yourself here upon the altar in service to others?
You acknowledge that you were once dead, for you took that flame from beside a coffin, and that Christ is the One who gave you life. Are we truly light? Is that true of us? Can our life bear to be brought out into the open? Can our life stand the test of the Gospel? It cannot, my beloved. Our life cannot even stand the scrutiny of the neighborhood outside.
“What we said among ourselves must not be repeated. Turn off the light; break the lamp, do you hear?” For the most part, ours is not a life that can bear the light. Therefore, since the patient endurance and goodness of God lead us to metanoia, to repentance, let us take care to change our lives. It costs nothing. You have a greengrocer, a butcher, a doctor, a barber, and a tailor, and you rightly pay them to serve you well.
You have a spiritual father who asks for no money. Or do you have no soul? Are you without a soul—and am I?
Do you care about your soul? Everyone else presents you with a bill to pay before continuing to do business with you. Christ says, “Come, let us settle the account, and I will forgive the whole debt,” yet the human person does not go. Where will he end up? Which of us is keeping this light fast during these days and therefore dares to enter the Church of Christ? Instead, he says to Christ, “I do not listen to You. I listen only to myself and do whatever I please.” Who keeps even this light fast? How demanding can it be, when fish is permitted on Saturday or Sunday? And yet people act as though it means nothing. So you believe in God in your own way, do you? We are deceiving ourselves, my beloved. I see it in myself and all around me, through the small ministry I perform: this is how the world thinks today. The feast of the Entry, then, cries out: “Take heed, O Christian, for this concerns a Kingdom, and I wish to put your life in order here, so that you may be with Me in eternity.”
You are called to be with the King, Christ; with the Queen, the Most Holy Theotokos; and with the children of the King. One day we must leave the candle stand below and ascend to the great chandelier above, which represents the Church Triumphant. We must be with Christ, who is the Sun; with the Most Holy Theotokos, who is the Moon; and with the Saints, who are the stars. We must dwell in that noetic and spiritual firmament, but this depends upon us—upon whether we are willing to change our lives and live in metanoia, repentance, Holy Confession, and Holy Communion. But these require us to stop sinning and to obey the law of God, and most people in the world are not willing to obey it. In any case, I wish to emphasize one thing: God is goodness in this world and justice in the world to come. Let us not allow ourselves to fall into the hands of the living God. Just as we have gathered every means available to meet our material needs...
...so should we make use of the means for our spiritual needs, which are offered freely. Today a person will eat three meals, apart from snacks in between. Downstairs there is bread baked in an oven with material fire; here there is Bread prepared by spiritual fire. Why do you take the bread you pay for, yet refuse the Bread for which you pay nothing? Clearly, you have not realized that you are also a soul. What do you need? Do you live only to feed a body that worms will eat tomorrow, while they say over you, “earth to earth”? Why? Is there not here a spiritual table for the spiritual hypostasis, the spiritual person, just as there is a material table there for the material aspect of the human person? Therefore, if you believe these words have any relevance or value, keep whatever you find helpful. And may the Saints who are here, together with this brotherhood which daily...
...has contact with the sacred and with God through its prayers, become a source of mercy for us. But we too must be willing, so that we may be edified. For Augustine, whom this holy place commemorates today, says, “He who created you without you cannot save you without you.” The One who created you without first asking you cannot save you without asking whether you desire it. It is not enough, my beloved, for a person to believe in his own way, because, as you yourselves know, there are nearly as many forms of belief as there are people.
Our Christ asked, “Who do people say that I am? What do they call Me? Who do they imagine Me to be?” Each person answered according to his own understanding and opinion. Some say that You are the Prophet Elijah; others that You are the Prophet Jeremiah; and others that You are one of the prophets. Very well—those are the things Costas says. Those are the things people say in the coffeehouse and the marketplace. They are Costas’s opinions. “But you, who do you say that the Son of Man is? You who are closer to Me and know Me from another side—”
“Who do you believe Me to be?” Then Peter, whose feast is celebrated today, spoke and declared one truth, the unique truth: “You are Christ, the Son of the living God.” You are Christ—not merely the son of some god, but the Son of the living God. Human beings have invented many gods. You are the Son of the living God. That was it. That was what Christ was waiting to hear, so that He might call Peter blessed. Thank you.
Do we believe? In whom do we believe? Someone may say, “Could our belief really be mistaken? Do you not see that we come to Church? Do you not see that we visit the monastery? Do you not see that we have icon corners in our homes, light candles, burn incense, and bring offerings to Church?” These things are good in part, but they are not the whole. The one who believes more correctly than all human beings is the devil. As James, the brother of the Lord, writes in his epistle, he believes and trembles: “The demons believe and tremble.”
What, then, is the difference at this point? Perhaps there is no difference at all, if we stop at merely saying, “We believe.” The difference, my beloved, lies—and must lie—in what we do: whether we put into action what we believe; whether we believe in Christ and do what Christ says; whether we believe in Christ and listen to what Christ says; whether we believe in Christ and keep Christ’s commandments. “He who loves Me will keep My law; he who loves Me will keep My commandments.” What I am saying now is a bitter truth. As far as I am concerned, it is entirely realistic. We Christians do not keep His commandments: we believe in word...
...but reject Him in deed. For a person’s salvation to be brought to completion, two legs are needed: “I believe” and “I act.” If I believe and blaspheme, if I believe and steal, if I believe and commit fornication, if I believe and avoid having children and kill them—then how can I claim that I do not disbelieve? I have therefore fashioned a god of my own, a kind of private god within myself, an idol. At the same time, I have fashioned a gospel of my own, even though I have icons, visit monasteries, go to Church, and so forth. How many people, sadly, are without God!
They believe in a god, but it is a god of their own—not Christ, not Jesus the Crucified, the Nazarene, the Son of Mary. The question is whether we believe in the Christ whom Peter confessed today, and whether we believe in this Christ, in the Gospel of this Christ, and in the teaching of this Christ—the One whom the angel proclaimed to the Myrrh-bearing Women when they sought Him after He had risen: “Whom do you seek here? Jesus the Crucified, the Nazarene? He is not here.” It is this Jesus of whom we are speaking. For the most part, people believe in some higher power. There is their god: a higher power. Others believe in some supreme god of their own...
...some supreme being. Others believe in God, in Jehovah; they form yet another group. Others say they believe in Christ, but those who truly believe in Christ the Crucified, the Nazarene, can be counted on one’s fingers. Therefore, it is not enough for a person to believe; he must also act. Two things are needed. One is called right belief—orthodoxy—and the other right action—orthopraxy. Two oars are needed for the boat of the human soul to move forward toward eternity. We do show reverence, but always from necessity rather than love, because most of us behave as Christians out of necessity and not from love. This is Jesus, the Crucified, the Nazarene; He is...
the Son of the living God. The answer came: “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah.” You are blessed, Simon Bar-Jonah, son of Jonah. “Why am I blessed, Lord?” “Because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you.” What you said did not come from you. You did not say it through your own cleverness or experience. Who said it, then? My Father used your mouth to proclaim this truth, the one and only truth, upon which rests the salvation of the whole world and the redemption of each person individually, if they are willing. God, then, declared that this is His Son, His Beloved, in whom He is well pleased. “Listen to Him. Listen to Him.” Do not listen to anyone else.
As for those who claim to offer other religions and forms of worship, know that their religion, their worship, and their beliefs lead only to Hell. But the religion and faith of Jesus, the Crucified One, Jesus of Nazareth, also has Paradise. And blessed is the person who, with simplicity of heart, is willing to accept this teaching. Peter, then, is called blessed because of this truth. This truth—the divinity of Jesus—is the cornerstone. Christ called him blessed. The Papists have taken this and made it refer to Peter, claiming that he was called blessed because Peter himself is the cornerstone.
The cornerstone is Christ. It is Peter’s confession—the divinity of Jesus. The Western Christians have misunderstood this. They claim a monopoly on the truth, but the truth lies in the divinity of Jesus. Peter was called blessed because God the Father used him to proclaim the dogma concerning the person of Jesus. Christ also changed his name. “From now on you will no longer be called Simon; you will be called Peter,” because Simon is interpreted as unstable. From now on, you will become steadfast. And he showed that he was unstable before he received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. He went so far as to swear an oath, denying this same Jesus three times. Peter was an elderly man, yet he had the soul of a child. He was a man who
always rushed ahead. Therefore, when Peter denied Him three times, Christ found grounds for mercy in his childlike soul and in his love for Christ. Judas also sinned, and outwardly his sin may perhaps have appeared less serious than Peter’s. Yet Peter’s intention, even when he reached the point of denial, had been to shed his own blood. “I do not know what the others will do. But I will sacrifice myself; I will die with You tonight.” The trouble was that he did not possess the strength, and he failed to add: “Lord, by Your strength I will go with You tonight, even to death if necessary.” Christ found that love within him, built upon it, helped him, and Peter returned. Yet
Christ called him blessed and said to him: “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah. You will no longer be called one who constantly changes his mind; you will be called Peter,” meaning that from then on he would be steadfast. And we know the strength he later showed, the power of his preaching, and how he finally accepted martyrdom rather than deny Jesus again. Christ renamed him. This is also why people in the Church and in monasteries receive new names. Kostas enters and becomes Kallinikos; Yannis enters and becomes Joachim. They keep the first letter of their former name but receive another saint’s name, one that suggests victory and spiritual achievement. At the same time—and I do not know whether you noticed this—after all these things Christ tells him: “Now receive the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed, and whatever you bind”
“shall be bound. Take these keys.” Where are these keys, and what are they? Do you know? They are the power to loose and to bind. This concerns the priest, the spiritual father. When a person repents and acknowledges his sins, the priest has the authority to absolve him of those sins; but if he remains unrepentant, the priest may leave them bound. These keys, which open the way to human repentance, remain in the world. Christ did not take them away with Him. He left them to His Apostles, both individually and as a body. When Christ appeared on the very day of the Resurrection—the fifth appearance He made that day—He stood in their midst that evening, though the doors were shut, while Thomas was absent.
Among the other things He said to them was: “Receive the Holy Spirit. As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” Then He breathed upon them, imparting the grace of the Holy Spirit even before Pentecost. He bestowed this particular gift, this special Mystery of repentance and confession: “Whatever you loose shall be loosed, and whatever you bind shall be bound.” “Did You bring us nothing from Hades?” “I have brought you the Mystery of Mysteries, so that whenever you fall, you may rise; whenever you fall, you may stand up again.” To fall is human; to persist in the fall is satanic. There are people who have fallen. They are not condemned merely because they fell. Perhaps they were pushed, perhaps they were careless, perhaps they did not know, or perhaps they failed to benefit while there was still time. They fell. They are not condemned for that. They are condemned because they remain on the ground.
They blaspheme Christ by implying that He is powerless or cruel and cannot forgive their sins. That is the error, and that is where the sin lies. My beloved, today there is a drought in the world, a spiritual drought. People are stuffed with material goods, yet inwardly they are empty and ready to lose their minds. They feel that this life does not belong to them, and they do not want it. They feel empty. The world is full of madhouses and psychiatric wards—in homes, in the streets, everywhere. Humanity is demon-possessed; humanity is parched. There is plenty of money, plenty of cars, and plenty of every convenience, but no joy—only melancholy, tribulation, dryness, noise, restless craving, murders, and every other evil in the world.
Is there any joy? Man tries to satisfy his spiritual nature with material goods. That is his mistake. He does not make proper use of them. He has placed a screen before himself called sin, and this prevents God from watering him from that lake—from irrigating him. Do you understand? From giving him water, as the elder inside explained so succinctly. This is why there is such tribulation in the world today, even though the abundance of good things ought to overwhelm man with delight. God made them for man. Go into the plant kingdom and see what He has made for man. Go into the kingdom of the fish and see what He has made for man. Go into the animal kingdom, like a vast meat market, and see what He has
made for man. What has He not provided for him? Yet man has no joy. He is sorrowful and troubled. There is no joy in the home today. A child is missing, this is missing, that is missing—joy itself is missing. Why? Because man has cut himself off from the waters that flow from God. He comes to the Church and receives the antidoron, the blessed bread after Liturgy, but he does not receive the Gift itself. He does not partake of Holy Communion from the Fountain of Life. Indeed, he eats the antidoron the next day because he has already eaten his breakfast. Consequently, he remains far from the Church and is not watered by the Church. And who is to blame? Man himself, because he does not put the channel of these waters in order; he does not keep it clean and connected with God. There is a story that illustrates what I am telling you:
Once, a group of mountaineers reached a place high in the mountains that was considered a true oasis. It had water, a beautiful garden, and much else besides. When they arrived and hurried to drink that cool water, they found everything dry and the fountain giving no water. They asked, “What happened to the water? Has it disappeared?” “Wait,” said one of them. “I will go higher up and see.” Farther up there was a very large lake from which the water was channeled down. Travelers who reached that place could drink, and the water irrigated the beautiful land there, which was now dry. He climbed up and saw an abundance of clear, flowing water, but none of it was being channeled down. Why was no water flowing down?
Because leaves, branches, and other debris from the trees had collected in the opening and blocked it, so the water could not flow downward. Up above there was a sea, a lake, an ocean of water, while below everything had dried up because these obstacles stood in the way. So it is with human sins: they enter and block the opening through which man is watered from the peaceful ocean. God is not to blame. Man himself is to blame. In his attempt to become superhuman, he has become less than human. Man has lost his true purpose. We often hear mothers say to their children, “You beast, get out of here!” Do not insult the beast. A beast has never departed from its purpose. It remains where God placed it.
Man departs from his purpose. The rational creature departs from his purpose and commits unspeakable acts in this life, thereby cutting off his communion with God. What good is it if electricity is available throughout the neighborhood and the whole country, while our switch is broken or our fuse—worth only a few pennies—is burned out, leaving us in darkness? The food in our refrigerator spoils. We cannot go upstairs; we cannot heat our home. Who is to blame? Man is to blame because he does not take care to establish the connection. When man sins, he burns out the fuse connecting him with God, and everything stops. God cuts off the current. God’s justice demands satisfaction. And what does satisfaction mean? It means that man must pay. But man has nothing with which to pay. Let him acknowledge that he owes the debt, and everything will be put right.
The greengrocer will send word: “Tell your father to come and pay. I am stopping his credit; I will give him nothing more.” The fishmonger will do the same, and so will the grocer and the baker. “Tell your father to come and settle the account.” And what does Christ say? “Come, let us settle the account, and I will forgive the whole debt. I am not asking you to pay Me; I will forgive it. And if you fall into debt again, I will forgive you again.” But man refuses. Man today does not want Christ because Christ rebukes his lawless way of life. He examines his money box, his illicit bed, his cooking pot, his fashion, his whole world. Man today does not want Christ or His Gospel. And Christ, being gentle and never forcing Himself upon anyone, makes Himself small and withdraws. “You do not want Me? Farewell. If you ever need Me, come.” And we would rather lose our minds than be reconciled with Christ.
We believe in everything except Christ. Which God are we speaking about? The preaching has reached the ends of the inhabited world; its voice has gone out to the ends of the earth. People today know what is happening on the moon, yet they do not know what is happening within their own hearts. The trouble is here—here, here. This is the poison that makes the head spin and drives man to madness. Man first commits spiritual suicide and then bodily suicide as well. Man landed on the moon but did not pray. Man has acquired so much knowledge, yet he does not know how to recite the Our Father by heart or say, “Holy God.” Why are these things so difficult? Because he does not want them. And Satan, with whom he has now aligned himself, does not want them either, even though at his Baptism man renounced him with his own mouth: “I renounce Satan.”
“I unite myself to You, O Christ.” But now man renounces Christ and unites himself to the devil. Once again God, as I said, being gentle and never forcing Himself upon anyone, steps aside and says to mankind: “As you wish. If you ever need Me, I will be here.” Let us therefore seize this opportunity—because of this place, because of the feast, and because of what is taking place here even now—to remind ourselves of these things. I do not know how each of us came here. Some came out of need, some out of gratitude, some out of curiosity, and others came without even knowing how they arrived. Yet nothing happens by chance. Everything is watched over by the sleepless eye of God’s providence.
He caught Paul in a particular way, because Paul was a formidable beast and required a special way of being caught. He called the Ethiopian eunuch of Candace in another way, sending a particular man into the desert of Gaza to interpret Isaiah for him, save him, and baptize him. He called Cornelius in a particular way. As many people as there are, so many are the ways Christ uses to bring them to know Him. A person does himself a great honor by coming to know Christ in this world. At an unexpected hour, when he departs this life, he will meet Him. But if he does not come to know Christ here, it would be better for him not to meet Christ there, because there he will meet Christ as justice. I often wonder about this.
Someone once gave me the answer while I was reading. I often wonder how man, so rational and so richly blessed by God with a mind capable of so many turns of thought, fails to grasp what is truly in his own interest. He does not grasp it; he does not want Christ. A young woman who was a university student told me, “The Gospel deprives me of certain things. That is why I want neither the Gospel nor the One who wrote it.” “My child,” I asked, “does it deprive you of lawful things or unlawful things?” “I do not know,” she replied. “But I want you to be honest. You are an educated young woman, and tomorrow you hope that people will listen to you. You cannot speak foolishly. I am asking you:
Does the Gospel forbid you lawful things or unlawful things? Does it prevent you from taking a man as your husband and receiving a blessing? Must you take the father of another woman’s children? Is one husband not enough for you? Must you take forty? God made one woman for Adam.” We had a long discussion. “Does Christ deprive you of joy? Have you ever heard of a Christian committing suicide? Have you ever seen a true Christian in a neurological clinic? Have you ever seen a Christian unable to sleep? Have you seen such a thing anywhere? How can you say these things?” She had many things she wanted to say, and she began to speak. “I will tell you only one thing,” I said, because at one point she told me, “I pity you, because you Christians are miserable.” I replied, “You have not lived the Christian life, so you cannot judge it.
How can you say such things? Once, a little girl spoke to her grandfather, who was listening to the children talking around the table. The grown children and their wives were discussing life beyond the grave, prayers, and other such things. The grandfather suddenly interrupted them and said, ‘There is nothing after death! Live your lives and do not listen to such things; that is just priestly talk.’ His little granddaughter, who had been listening, asked him, ‘Grandpa, have you ever died?’ The grandfather froze. In other words: ‘Have you ever died, gone over there, and seen for yourself that there is nothing?’
That was the point. “Have you ever died, Grandpa?” she asked him. It was as though she were saying, “How can you say such things, Grandpa? You say there is nothing after death—but what if there is? Tell me.” And I ask that young woman, and ourselves, and the whole world—all those who loathe and shun Christianity because they think it deprives them of things: Christianity deprives them of nothing. There is no one happier than a Christian, no one more peaceful, no one more well-balanced. The Christian has all these questions settled, unlike others who suffer from anxiety and are stretched like rubber bands from morning until night. So I put this question to myself, and I put it to you as well: “What does the Christian lose that the unbeliever gains? Tell me: if there is nothing beyond the grave, what will I, who believe, have lost? But if there is, what will you have gained? You say there is nothing, do you? Then tell me what I have lost—and tell me what you have gained, when all you have done is bring tears into the world,”
“passing through it as a destroyer and leaving ruin behind you. For that is what it comes to.” Today the door opens, and people come out of it of whom others will not say what that simple woman said of Christ, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You,” but instead, “Cursed be the mother who bore you.” That is what they will say, because today our doors open and beasts come out. Think about this, my beloved, and at the same time consider the mercy Christ is showing here, before the Most Holy Theotokos, the Myrrh-Streaming One. Let us change our lives. Let us bring metanoia—repentance—and Holy Confession into our lives. Let us clear away the leaves, the sticks, and all the debris that block us from Christ, that peaceful and unfathomable ocean, so that our souls may be refreshed. Then our lives will begin to change here and now.
We shall be ready there, for that life which has no end. This is what I pray for one another and for everyone. Amen.

Θα πρέπει οι άνθρωποι να είναι πανευτυχείς. Είναι δυστυχισμένοι οι άνθρωποι. Έχασαν τον ύπνο τους οι άνθρωποι, είναι νευρασθενικοί οι άνθρωποι. Γιατί; Διότι δεν πιστεύουν στην άλλη ζωή. Και αν επρόκειτο για μια ζωή απλώς, αν επρόκειτο δηλαδή για αλλαγή σκηνικών, απλώς κάτι πήγαινε και ερχότανε. Ακούσατε τι είπε; Προσέξατε; Προλάβατε;
Ζητείτε πρώτον τη Βασιλεία του Θεού. Την δικαιοσύνην αυτού, και ταύτα πάντα προστεθήσεται υμίν. Ένα κομμάτι ψωμί θα σου το δώσω εγώ, ένα κεραμίδι θα σου το δώσω εγώ, ένα ρούχο θα σου το δώσω εγώ. Εγώ που τρέφω τα πουλιά, τα οποία δεν σπείρουν και δεν θερίζουν. Εγώ που δίνω τα άνθη, τα οποία είναι ανώτερα σε δόξα, όπως τα βλέπετε, από τον Σολομώντα στη δόξα του, που τα βλέπεις και χαίρεσαι, και περνάει το τακουνάκι του παρανόμου ζευγαριού και το χαλάει. Και εν τούτοις αυτό, που υπόκειται στο πάτημα του παρανόμου ζευγαριού, στο κέφι της κατσίκας που θα το φάει, δεν ξέρω ποιος άλλος θα το καταστρέψει, παρουσιάζει ένα θαύμα περιποιήσεως, ένα χρώμα οφθαλμών, που λες: ποιος θα κάνει όλα αυτά τα έξοδα, τόσα γι' αυτά;
Είναι συμφέρον στον άνθρωπο και θα έπρεπε να το επιθυμεί και να ετοιμάζεται για εκεί. Αλλά, διότι δεν θέλει να ετοιμαστεί, θέλει να κάνει τη ζωή αυτή, θέλει να πιστεύει μόνο σε αυτά που βλέπει. Θέλει διά γνώσεως και όχι διά πίστεως. Γι' αυτό και ακριβώς τον βρίσκει ο θάνατος. Και μάλιστα σήμερα, που είναι πολύ μοντέρνοι οι τρόποι του θανάτου του. Οικογένειες ξεκληρίζονται, στόλοι ξεκληρίζονται, γειτονιές ολόκληρες ξεκληρίζονται με χίλιους τρόπους: μα με ένα αεροπλάνο που θα πέσει, μα με ένα αυτοκίνητο που θα εκτροχιαστεί, μα ένα άλλο δυστύχημα που θα γίνει. Και εν τούτοις ο άνθρωπος δεν θέλει να λογικευτεί και δεν θέλει να προσέξει. «Ποιος πήγε», λέει, «από εκεί; Σοβαρά, δεν πήγε κανένας από εκεί; Μήπως ήρθε κανένας από εκεί εδώ και μας είπε πώς είναι από εκεί;» Δηλαδή δεν πιστεύεις στον Χριστό, δεν πιστεύεις στον Θεό; Τότε τι ανάβεις κεριά; Τι έρχεσαι στην Εκκλησία Του;
Γράφει στα υποδήματά της: «Ὡς ἀκύρωτον». Και ταυτόχρονα τη μακροθυμία μου την εκμεταλλευτεί και τη θεωρήσει ως αδυναμίαν, ως ανυπαρξίαν. Γιατί πολλοί έτσι νομίζουνε. Διότι ο Θεός δεν κόβει μύτες κι αυτιά, όπως θέλουν αυτοί των αλλωνών —θα έπρεπε να έχει κόψει πολλές δικές τους— νομίζουν ότι δεν υπάρχει ή ότι δεν είναι. Α, δεν κάνουμε! Εδώ, Νικόλα, σε λέω για παράδειγμα. Και είναι και υπάρχει και δύναται, αλλά μακροθυμεί. Και όταν ο άνθρωπος στην παροικία του εδώ δεν κάνει καλή χρήση και δεν μετανοήσει, δεν εξομολογηθεί, θα έρθει μια μέρα στην κρίση εκείνη και δεν υπάρχει έλεος. Αυτή είναι η διδασκαλία. Μάθαμε να ανάβουμε κεριά. Καλώς και αγίως. Ρώτησες ποτέ σου τι είναι αυτό το κερί που ανάβεις; Ρώτησες ποτέ σου ότι είναι μία ομολογία και ότι είσαι φως εις τον κόσμο και θυσιάζεις τον εαυτό σου εις βωμόν εδώ, εις εξυπηρέτηση των άλλων;
Έχεις πνευματικό που δεν θέλει λεφτά ή δεν έχεις ψυχή; Εσύ είσαι άψυχος κι εγώ;
Κάποτε μια συντροφιά ορειβατών έφτασε σε ένα μέρος το οποίο εθεωρείτο εκεί ψηλά ότι είναι πραγματικά όαση. Είχε ένα νερό, έναν ωραίο κήπο κλπ. Και όταν έφτασε εκεί και έτρεξε να πιει νερό, στο δροσερό εκείνο νερό, τα βρήκε όλα ξηρά και τη βρύση να μην βγάζει νερό. Και θέτει ερώτημα: «Τι έγινε το νερό; Χάθηκε το νερό;» «Περιμένετε», λέει κάποιος άλλος, «θα πάω πιο ψηλά να δω», γιατί πιο ψηλά υπήρχε μια πολύ μεγάλη λίμνη, από την οποία διοχετευόταν το νερό και ήρχετο εκεί, έπιναν οι άνθρωποι που έφταναν μέχρι εκεί και αρδευόταν και ένας ωραίος τόπος που υπήρχε εκεί, που τώρα ήταν ξερός. Πηγαίνει επάνω και βλέπει νερό επάνω άφθονο, γάργαρο, όμως δεν διοχετεύεται κάτω. Γιατί δεν διοχετεύεται κάτω;
Πώς μπορείς να λες αυτά τα πράγματα; Διότι μια μικρούλα», λέγω, «είπε στον παππού, που άκουγε τη συζήτηση των παιδιών στο τραπέζι. Τα μεγάλα παιδιά με τις γυναίκες μιλούσαν για ζωή πέραν του τάφου, προσευχές, ξέρω εγώ, και λοιπά, και πετάχθηκε ο παππούς και είπε: “Δεν υπάρχει τίποτα, ρε. Κάντε τη ζωή σας, μην ακούτε αυτά, των παπάδων δουλειές”. Και η μικρή, η οποία άκουγε, το εγγονάκι, είπε στον παππού: “Παππού, πέθανες καμιά φορά;” Κόκαλο ο παππούς. Δηλαδή, είχες πεθάνει καμιά φορά και πήγες από εκεί και είδες ότι δεν είναι τίποτα;
