Summary

The lecturer argues that Orthodox Christians cannot resist heresy effectively without serious knowledge of Holy Scripture and the ability to explain their faith. He urges Orthodox families to read the Synaxarion and lives of the Saints so that believers learn the Church’s faith through concrete examples from childhood. He concludes that enduring holy water, baptismal regeneration, and personal knowledge of Christ witness to Orthodoxy, though salvation still requires faithful Christian living rather than the Orthodox name alone.

I have learned that during these days the Holy Metropolis here has proclaimed a ten-day campaign against heresy. I believe it is my duty, within the scope of my small ministry here, to take part in this effort as much as I can, because this struggle concerns everyone; it is not a limited struggle. It is the struggle of us all. Yet I must confess something, based on the little experience I have gained in this matter over my twenty-six years of ministry.

Our religious people are not equipped to wage a struggle against heresy, because that struggle can be waged only through knowledge of Holy Scripture. And the only religious people who do not know Holy Scripture are the Orthodox.

I repeat: I am not discussing whether five people out of a thousand understand something of Holy Scripture. The other 995 are completely in the dark; they know nothing about it. Therefore, if I now speak to you from Holy Scripture and prove the divinity of Jesus, the Holy Trinity, the divinity of the Holy Spirit, why we must have icons, why we must venerate the Saints, and so forth, you will listen and listen and listen—and perhaps even fall asleep. But you will not be able to pass any of it on.

The other person will ask you, “Where does it say that?” And then he will say, “My friend, you know nothing at all.”

If I say, “The Epistle to the Colossians,” you will ask, “What is that? What do you do with this ‘Epistle to the Colossians’?” If I mention a particular chapter and verse, you will ask, “Where is that place? Somewhere in Xiromero? Where is it?” For the most part, we simply do not know. Yet Holy Scripture, through Peter, says that I must always be ready to give a defense, in heaven and on earth. A person who is unable to confess his faith is deficient. Within the limits of his knowledge, he must be able to show the basis for what he believes and where it is founded. We received the faith without examining what it was that we had received, and without being able to answer another person and show him that

what he maintains is not correct. That is why these people often shake our faith: they study for three hours every day. Every day they have a rule of prayer from the devil—to study Holy Scripture for three hours. And they study under guidance; someone directs them in what to read. They do not read all of it. They read selected verses that will be useful to them in undermining the true faith, because their guide, leader, and inspiration is Beelzebub himself. When we speak of a heretic, we are not speaking of someone who has simply been led astray,

or of a sinner, an atheist, or someone who does not know. We mean someone who does know, yet deliberately calls white black and black white. That is a heretic. And I am deeply saddened to hear that this struggle has been limited to the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Is Protestantism not a heresy? Is spiritualism not a heresy? Is Freemasonry not a heresy? Is Lutheranism not a heresy? Is Papism not a heresy? What, then, are they? There is one faith, one religion, one road that saves, one truth, and only one possesses that truth: Orthodoxy. Of course, Satan—and we ourselves, when we try to be more royalist than the king—immediately resort to false humility and say, “Is it not egotistical to claim that we alone have the truth?” Come now! If that is how things are, what should we say? Should we lie and say that others have it too? How could we say such a thing? Those of you who were with us at the last talk may remember the incident I related at the end about a nineteen-year-old girl possessed by a demon. The Roman Catholic priests read their prayers over her, and Satan mocked them and merely shook her about. But when one of our own humble priests took his epitrachelion, went to her, and read the prayers, the demon nearly brought the house down. “That goat! That horned one! That filthy wretch! Who would call for someone like him?” And on and on it went. But the priest cast him out. He cast him out. Our own sinful little priest, wearing his epitrachelion, cast him out.

The questions raised by heresy require careful thought. Few people are capable of standing their ground through Holy Scripture—very few. Most will stand through deeds. Someone will ask you, “How can you prove that your faith is right and mine is not?” What will you answer? Will you say, “I interpret Holy Scripture correctly”? He will reply, “I also interpret Holy Scripture correctly. Who will tell us whether you interpret it correctly and I do not?” There is one secret possessed by Orthodoxy alone—one secret possessed by Orthodoxy alone:

miracles. The miracles performed by our Lord, by the Saints, and by our Most Holy Theotokos within Orthodoxy confirm the truth of what is proclaimed. Can a Protestant work a miracle? No, he cannot. And I do not mean those miracles which, in a certain sense, are limited to the body. A Muslim may go and ask Master Saint George for a miracle, and the Saint grants it. A Roman Catholic may go to Our Lady of Lourdes, and she grants him a miracle. But she shows mercy only to his body, not also to his spirit.

Here the words apply: “At every season and every hour, loving the righteous and showing mercy to sinners.” God shows mercy to him as well, just as the Orthodox Church, by condescension, will bury even someone of another religion. The Church buries him because he bears the image of God. It does not say, “the servant of God,” because he never became a servant of God; nevertheless, it has a special prayer by which he too is committed to the earth. The Church exercises economia because he bears the imprint of God’s personhood. But the miracles performed within Orthodoxy are proof of the truth. And if I were to tell you about the millions of miracles...

Miracles are not only those occasions when a sick person recovers, or someone escapes a shipwreck or a car accident after crying, “My Most Holy Theotokos!” These are not merely material things. There are also spiritual miracles: regeneration. When a person is born anew in Baptism, becomes a different person, and is aware of it, that is a miracle. Millions of such miracles have occurred. We do not see them, and so we do not count them. We see only the outward miracles. Go to any shrine of our Most Holy Theotokos and look at the votive offerings there. Go and see the votive offerings at the shrines of the Saints.

Behind every one of them lies a miracle. Does Protestantism have such things? No. Do the Jehovah’s Witnesses have them? No. Does Papism have them? No. No one has them. Orthodoxy alone has them.

A person must therefore seek out these things so that he can, in some way, contend with such people and restrain them, keeping them to themselves and not allowing their corruption to infect us as well. How, then, am I to arm myself?

I receive a vaccine. When an epidemic is raging outside, we do not fight the epidemic itself; we are vaccinated against it so that it can gain no foothold in us. You may now ask, “What vaccine do you prescribe, Mr. Panagopoulos, playing the little doctor, against this great disease that has reached our Greece—the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Protestantism, Pentecostalism, and Papism?” What is happening in Greece, this unguarded vineyard, is enough to make you tear your hair out. It is already a miracle that bells and priests still remain, despite all the snares set for them. What is happening here happens nowhere else. They come here to enlighten us, claiming that we are blind. They do not go to those who have never yet heard the Gospel. It is outrageous. So you will ask me, “What medicine do you prescribe? How should a person think? What should he watch out for? What should he read? How can I understand that my own faith is the true one? How can I believe that Christ is God? I see Him eating; I see Him weeping and shedding tears;

I see Him afraid and saying, ‘Let this cup pass from Me.’ How can I say that He is God when He says, ‘The Father is greater than I’? Can you not see that He is lesser?” Do you understand? Where can I find the answer and read it? I would like to know. I said earlier that the miracles found within the life of the Orthodox Church are what strengthen a person and create spiritual antibodies within him against the warfare Satan wages through these instruments of his. Let me ask you: Was the question of whether Christ is God raised from the very first years of Christianity? Yes, it was.

Saint John was compelled to write, “No one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.” A person who does not possess the grace of the Holy Spirit cannot acknowledge Jesus as Lord.

Therefore, grace is needed in order to confess the faith. Without grace, this is very difficult. From the earliest days, then, the divinity of Jesus was rejected. Have you ever asked who the father of the Jehovah’s Witnesses is? Arius. It was Arius who occupied the attention of the First Ecumenical Council. He was the first to reject the divinity of Jesus. A struggle arose—a battle based on Holy Scripture. Did it accomplish anything? There were great and learned men: Saint Athanasius the Great, a towering figure, and Saint Nicholas, who reached the point of...

giving Arius a resounding slap on the head, as we would put it, right there in the Council. Did they achieve anything? For whole days one would speak and then the other; one would argue, and then the other. What was the result? Nothing. Did they not have the Holy Spirit? They did. Yet nothing came of it. They could not persuade Arius and his followers. So what happened? An elderly Saint stepped into the middle holding a roof tile—Saint Spyridon—and silenced him.

Not even a hundred Orthodox scholars of Holy Scripture, using words and human arguments—even though they were filled with the Holy Spirit—could move Arius aside. But Saint Spyridon came forward and said to him, “O Arius, in the name of the Father,” and fire rose upward; “and of the Son,” and water fell downward; “and of the Holy Spirit,” and earth remained in his hand—the roof tile. Saint Spyridon said to Arius, “In the name of the Father,” and fire rose; “and of the Son,” and water flowed down; “and of the Holy Spirit,” and the tile remained in his hand. Was he not showing him that the Three are One and the One is Three?

You may ask, “Did Arius believe?” No, he did not. And that is precisely why I offer this as an argument. Let no one imagine that he will easily convert a Jehovah’s Witness. It would require a miracle of miracles. I do not know what opening our Christ could find in order to enter and transform such a person. It is extremely difficult. Once someone has slipped into heresy—whether he is a Protestant, euphemistically called an Evangelical, or a Jehovah’s Witness—it is very difficult for him to return. At that time Arius contented himself, if you know the account, with saying the following:

“The words are human, but the deed is divine.” What you said, you said as a man, but the miracle that took place was from the Lord. Did Arius believe? You may remember that once, when we were speaking about another subject, I told you how Arius’s mother questioned him. She implored him, by the milk with which she had nursed him, to tell her whether he was right or Athanasius was right. Arius answered, “Athanasius is right, but I cannot turn back.” And he did not turn back. You know how he ended!

His bowels spilled out in the latrine. The spiritual Judas burst open in the middle, and his entrails poured out in a latrine. That was the outcome and the end of Arius. And we do not stop there. Since I have raised the matter of God’s answer, given through the Holy Spirit concerning the divinity of Jesus and the Holy Trinity, Saint Achillios, the bishop of Larissa, also worked a miracle at the First Ecumenical Council. He called Arius and said to him, “If what you teach is from God, command this stone to bring forth oil.” Arius turned the challenge back on him: “You do it.”

“You first,” he said. “If your teaching is from God, you command it.” So Saint Achillios said, “In the name of the Holy Trinity, let oil come forth.” And oil began to flow. This was the second miracle I am telling you about at the First Ecumenical Council. The speeches stopped, the theories stopped, the war of dialogue and argument stopped. Then praxis—the concrete deed—began to prove the certainty of the teaching. These things remain relevant in our own days. An Orthodox Christian must know them, must have read them, and must pass them on, so that those who come after us will understand what is at stake and will know how to resist when the wolf comes. Why do we not know these things? Who has the Synaxarion at home? Who reads the lives and the spiritual feats of the Saints?

These Saints are the friends of Christ, and they are our own friends and defenders. Why should the lives of the Saints, which are so easy to understand, remain unknown, instead of arming people spiritually from childhood? What do children receive? Mickey Mouse and all sorts of other supposedly educational, yet satanic and worldly things, and who knows what else. But we deprive them of the lives of the Saints; we do not give them these at all. Where will we end up, then? And now we are concerned about them. Will we save them? How will we save them? Since we are speaking about the First Ecumenical Council, whose subject was the divinity of Jesus—a truth that the Jehovah’s Witnesses vehemently oppose—they tell us that Christ is not God, but a servant, the first angel, the instrument through whom Jehovah made creation. They deny that Christ is Jehovah; in other words, they deny that He is Almighty and that He is Lord. So I ask you:

Consider another miracle that took place. Why did Saint Nicholas strike Arius? Why did he slap him? Because of his unruly, satanic tongue. Saint Nicholas could no longer restrain himself. What followed? His hand was supposed to be cut off. That was the law: if someone struck another in the emperor’s presence, his hand was to be cut off. That was the penalty. But so that the Council would not be interrupted, they stripped Saint Nicholas of his episcopal rank and imprisoned him. The Council would first come to an end, and then his hand would be severed. So the Saint was in prison. There, the Most Holy Theotokos and the Lord visited him. “Nicholas, what are you doing here?” they asked. “I am here for love of you, my Lady,” he answered.

The Most Holy Theotokos gave him the omophorion, and the Lord gave him the Gospel. That is why, if you have noticed, Saint Nicholas is shown holding the Gospel very prominently, with the omophorion also prominently displayed. In icons of bishops, above him you will see the Lady Theotokos and our Lord Jesus Christ. When his friends came the next day to bring him a little food, they found him restored as a bishop once again. Three miracles. And there was also a fourth miracle involving someone named Kordounis, though I have not located the exact account in the acts of the Council to see what he did. These four miracles confirmed the decrees of the First Ecumenical Council concerning

whether Christ is God and whether God is three-hypostatic—three Persons—or not. And we Orthodox sing about this, though we understand nothing of what we sing: “At the First Council you were revealed as a champion and wonderworker, O God-bearing Spyridon, our father.” Yes, we sing it. But what does it mean? What discussion, then, am I to have with a Jehovah’s Witness? What can he tell me, when Christ has already settled this matter for me? Ever since Christianity came into the world, I blaspheme my Christ if I sit down to debate whether my Christ is God, why the Holy Trinity is the Holy Trinity, and so forth, allowing someone else to lecture me about these things. Is it not indirectly blasphemous on my part even to treat these truths as matters open for debate? Such people should be sent away at once, without any discussion. We ourselves must have these matters settled, because Christ has settled them for us.

He gave them to us not only in theory, but also in concrete deeds. He knew that we would always be modern-day Thomases, wanting to put our finger into the print of the nails. God knew that we would want to move our faith from hearing to sight: “I must see; if I do not see, I will not believe.” He knew this, and He permitted such tremendous and wondrous miracles to take place and to be recorded. Yet today we do not know them. Then someone asks you, “Do you know what Holy Scripture says?” I did not know this Scripture—yet I claimed that I knew it. But do you truly know what they say inside and out, or do you merely know that the book is there? That is why we say someone knows something “inside out,” strange as the expression may seem.

It is a great achievement for a person without the grace of the Holy Spirit to discover the particular verses needed to support a subject. If you want to see what I mean, and if you have nothing else you wish to read, read the fourth chapter of Matthew. In Matthew chapter four, Christ is shown after His Baptism, being tempted by Satan in the wilderness. What did Satan say in order to discover whether He truly was God? He saw Him fasting for forty days and forty nights, approached Him, and put a deceptive challenge before Him.

“If You are the Son of God,” he said—“if You are the Son of God.” “How can you not know whether I am?” Satan was confused. Why was he confused? Because the day before, at the Baptism, he had seen heaven opened, the Holy Spirit above Christ in the form of a dove, and had heard the voice confirming the truth of the matter: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” He had seen all that. But now he saw Christ fasting for forty days. How could this be? That is where the confusion arose. And that is where today’s enemies—and the perennial enemies—of Christ also become confused. They take the verses concerning the Lord’s human nature and use them to argue that He is not God. But they ignore the verses concerning His divine nature.

[This paragraph is unintelligible in the source transcript.]

The heavens also opened over Him as God. Holy Scripture presents two aspects in the life of Christ. It does not present only His humanity; it also presents His divinity. Yet they read, for example, from John—you yourselves may have read it—where He says, “My Father is greater than I.” “Do you not see?” they say. “He Himself says, ‘My Father is greater than I.’” Yet very close to that verse He says, “Philip, do you not know that I and the Father are one?” They do not take the passage that says, “I and the Father are one.” They take the earlier one that says, “My Father is greater than I.” Insofar as He became man, His Father is greater than He, for the Son is begotten while the Father is unbegotten. Yet God is one. They take the one verse, and because we do not know any verses at all, we stand there and say, “They are right. The priests have deceived us,” spiritually speaking.

If a person wishes to investigate, then, there is much to examine, and he does not need extensive education. Learning is not required, because God knew that many of us would remain uneducated. This does not mean that He is against learning. Knowledge and science are His. Read Solomon: God gives them. Read the Wisdom of Sirach: He gives all these things; they are His, but they must be used for good. Knives are also His, so that we may cut potatoes, bread, and fruit—not so that we may cut out our own entrails. We use our learning against ourselves. That is what becomes of education. As both our wise men and the Fathers rightly say, learning is a serious matter for the human person. That is why the popular saying goes, “An uneducated man is a piece of unhewn wood.” These are practical words, but they carry real meaning.

Pay attention, then, and let no one lose heart or think he is in danger if he examines the praxis—the lived reality—of the Church and what he himself believes. From this he will see that his faith, the Orthodox faith, is true. But people do not want to hear this. And as I said, I am saddened that these talks have dealt only with the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and not even thoroughly. The Protestants come next. The Protestants, the so-called Evangelicals, reject twenty-three things. They supposedly uphold the Gospel and loudly claim to believe in Christ. But they do not believe in Christ. They do not believe in Christ as an eternal Being.

Do they believe in the priesthood? No. Do they believe in the Church? No. Do they believe in Baptism? No. Do they believe in Chrismation? No. Do they believe in the Most Holy Theotokos? No. Do they believe in the Saints? No. Do they believe in holy relics? No. Do they believe in Holy Communion? No. What do they believe? They say they believe that Christ is God, but they are lying.

I will prove it to you. Listen. “Mr. Protestant, is Christ God?” “Yes.” “Then what is the Most Holy Theotokos?” “A good woman,” he answers. “A virgin,” he answers—as though he were speaking about one of his relatives by marriage.

Even women speak this way, though by their very nature as women they should feel and speak about the Mother of God with greater reverence and in a different manner. If you tell a Protestant that the Most Holy Theotokos is Theotokos, it is as though an electric shock runs through him. He does not acknowledge her as Theotokos. He does not want her as Virgin. He does not want her as Ever-Virgin. He wants her merely as a good woman. So, Mr. Protestant, if Christ is God—and the Jehovah’s Witness, of course, does not acknowledge Him as God—then for you as a Protestant, if Christ is God, what should the woman who gave birth to Him be called, since she gave birth to God? Should she not be called Theotokos?

At least that is what the Greek word itself says. If a creature gave birth to a cat, what would it be called? A bearer of a cat. If it gave birth to a dog, a bearer of a dog. It gave birth to a dog; it gave birth to a cat. Since she gave birth to God, what should she be called? Should she not be called Theotokos, the God-bearer? What is being overstated here? Therefore, He is God in their words, but not God in their actual belief. Saint Gregory the Theologian anticipated this in the third century. The Protestants appeared in 1519, when Luther protested against the despotism of papism and against the Pope, for Protestantism came from the corrupted blood of the papal Church. It has no connection whatsoever with Orthodoxy, whatever it may know of the Gospel. And so Saint Gregory, in the third century, says, “No.”

“If anyone does not acknowledge Mary as Theotokos, he is separated from the Godhead.” If someone does not accept her as Theotokos, he is without God, the Saint says. This is what I told you earlier. With your words alone you say, “Yes, I believe; I believe in Christ.” Yet you reject the divinity of Christ because you do not call His Mother Theotokos. Since you do not acknowledge her as Theotokos, you therefore do not acknowledge that Christ is God, the God-Man. That is why Paul writes that Christianity is not merely words, but power; it is life, it is praxis—lived action. If we Orthodox were willing to look at life rather than abstract theory—to look at the life of our Church—

would we need to go elsewhere or search for other religions? You take your little bottle from your grandmother and go on the first day of the month or at Theophany to receive the blessing of water, the Agiasmos. How many Orthodox Christians—including some who later became Jehovah’s Witnesses or joined other heresies—have not had bottles of blessed water in their homes? Who else can do this? Let all the millions of Jehovah’s Witnesses from Brooklyn gather here and pray over water so that it will not spoil or begin to stink. No one can do it. The Roman Catholics cannot do it. The Protestants cannot do it. No one can do it. Only the Orthodox Christian can—the one who belongs to the Theotokos.

This is the answer and the confirmation of everything I have said. As I told you earlier, let us not indulge in false humility by saying, “Only we will be saved.” Not even we will necessarily be saved. Who told you that you will be saved? I am saying only that my faith saves, provided I live as I should in order to be saved. The label “Orthodox” alone is worthless if the corresponding substance is not there within. It is not simply a matter of saying, “I am Orthodox, so I own a plot of land in Paradise.” How will I go and claim that plot? How will I come to dwell in that place which God has prepared from the foundation of the world? In our home we have holy water that is seventy years old. And just the other day, I was struck by something when we moved

our icon corner slightly to the left and a whole row of bottles appeared, including recent ones ten, twelve, and fifteen years old. I saw holy water from various shrines we have visited, and it was crystal clear. Put ordinary water into any bottle you like, and within a few days it will begin to smell and develop rust-colored deposits and sediment. Do I need to go to the Sea of Gennesaret? Do I need to go to Cana? Do I need to go up to Heaven when Christ brings Heaven down here, and I can see it and experience it? Christ becomes perceptible to my very senses. So, if you ask whether I believe in Christ, I can answer you with every right: “I do not believe.” You will say, “Mr. Panagopoulos, do you not believe that Christ exists?” I do not merely believe that Christ exists.

I know Christ. I believe in a person whom I do not know; but when I know someone, I no longer need belief, because I have knowledge. I know Christ. And an Orthodox Christian ought to know Christ and to know his faith. Show me otherwise. The Jehovah’s Witnesses, the so-called Bible Students, have challenged us over the Holy Relics. And one of our own Orthodox professors even dared to say, “As for the Holy Relics, I could gather them all together, grind them into flour, and throw them away so that they would no longer be in our way.” That is what he said; those were his very words. I pray that the Saints—those who were slaughtered for Christ, as Saint Gregory says—will not hold it against him. May they not hold it against him. Please.

I wanted to remind both them and ourselves, whom they call idolaters, of something. Last year I was at the Skete of Saint Anna on the Holy Mountain, and sadly I saw young people whom we expect tomorrow to embrace Holy Communion and stand alongside us. Among the other Holy Relics, the left foot of Saint Anna was brought out—the fragrant foot of her who carried the Most Holy Theotokos within her for nine months. The Holy Relics were there, yet these young people sat on the low wall and did not rise to venerate them. Other people, strangers, stood reverently, while those shameless young people remained sitting opposite them, indifferent.

They did not even rise, either during the blessing of water or when we went and knelt to receive a blessing and holy water. Why? Because they hear these things today, learn these things today, are nourished on these things today, and they do not know the truth. But I would like to say this both to them and to those who come after them: You reject the Holy Relics? Very well. You do not accept them? You say they are ridiculous, a means of exploitation for the Church and the priests? Very well. Have you ever heard the devil speak about the Relics? Go to Saint Gerasimos and hear what that Relic truly is—the one you call a mummy, according to your science and your learning. Go to Saint Gerasimos and learn through negative testimony; let the Orthodox Christian hear the teaching even from the enemy’s own mouth.

And you, the Bible Student who believes in nothing outside the Scriptures, have you ever read in the Old Testament about a miracle worked through Holy Relics? Someone may ask, “Were there relics in the Old Testament too?” Yes. Read 2 Kings 13:21. You will find that in the days of Elisha there was a burial. The dead man’s loved ones were taking him to the burial place when a disturbance broke out—raiders or rebels appeared. Everyone fled, and they did not have time to reach the grave and place the man inside. They hurriedly threw him into an open tomb and ran away. That tomb belonged to the Prophet Elisha.

The dead man touched the relics of the Prophet Elisha, came back to life, and stood upon his feet. Does your Scripture say this or not? It does. How, then, can relics from the Old Testament have the power to raise the dead, while the relics of those slaughtered for Christ—the millions of lambs slain for their love of Christ and their faith in Him—have no power? So you also contradict Scripture. You call yourselves Bible Students, yet you are unlearned in the Bible. And we simply sit and listen to you. But, my good man, what does your own Scripture say here? Does it say this or not? If a person truly wished to learn, there would be many things he would seek. Goodbye!

Did Christ come face-to-face with the devil or not? As I told you, the devil posed that deceptive challenge in order to discover whether He was God: he told Him to turn the stones into bread. “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread.” Did he say it to Him? Did the devil say it or not? He did. And notice the thought behind it. I am speaking about the fourth chapter of Matthew, which I told you to open and read, even if you wish to read nothing else. The devil said this to Christ because he was confused. The day before, he had seen Heaven bearing witness that Christ was God, the beloved Son; but now he saw Him fasting, and he could not understand it.

Because of his pride, he could not understand how God had become man. He himself was a creature who had wanted to become God, and that was his downfall. So he said to Him—and this was scriptural, for Satan took the words from Scripture—“If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread.” Why sit there hungry and suffering? It is a desert, of course; there is no bread here and no bakery. But if You truly are the Son of God, You can turn these stones into bread and eat. At the same time, I will discover that You are the Son of God and take my precautions. I must be careful not to suffer defeat; perhaps I can set some trap for You. He remained caught in this uncertainty right to the final moment, to Golgotha—one moment seeing Him as God,

and the next seeing Him as man. If He was God, how could He fear death and say, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even unto death”? In every instance it was first one and then the other: divine, human; divine, human. What did the Lord do? He answered him from Scripture. I tell you this so that no one will say, “Then Holy Scripture should not be read, because it contains no arguments against Satan.” No, that is not what I am saying. I am speaking about those who are unread and lazy, who refuse to read. Holy Scripture contains ample arguments. But the Lord knew that Satan would never be converted, because he is Satan. Strengthen yourself, stand firmly within the living reality of your Church, and behold the miracles that God continually works.

Let them help establish you in the faith concerning things you cannot see, because without these outward signs your faith may not be firmly grounded. So the Lord answers him from Scripture: “For it is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” My Christ answered him scripturally, and Satan was silenced. Then Satan took Him to a pinnacle and said, “Throw Yourself down. It is written concerning You that He will send angels to catch You before You fall, lest Your feet strike against a stone.” And what conclusion was he trying to draw from this?

The conclusion was: Are You the Son of God? And the Lord again answered him from Scripture: “Yes, that is written, but it is also written: ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’” When he failed there too, Satan put another deceptive proposal before Him. He said, “All these things I will give You if You fall down and worship me.” Make one prostration before me, he said to Christ, and I will give You all these things. There is no need for You to be crucified in order to receive them; I will give them to You now, if You make just one prostration before me. And the Lord answered him: “Get behind Me, Satan,” and, “It is written: ‘You shall worship the Lord your God,’” and so forth.

It was a scriptural contest—a battle from Scripture between Satan and Christ. There are, then, passages of Scripture that silence every objection. But we do not know them, because they are scattered throughout Holy Scripture. They are not arranged in sequence, like the Lord’s Prayer. They are scattered, and you need the Holy Spirit in order to draw them out, discern their meaning, and bring together what is needed. A person who is not filled with the Spirit does not have the grace to speak; and because his life is not what it should be, he has not received this mercy. He cannot find these passages and does not have the answers he needs. Someone may ask, “Why did God not put them all in order for us?” Well, we know how such an ordered sequence would go: first this will happen, then that. If He had arranged them in order...

Satan would have known them as well. That is precisely why they are not set out in sequence. If you read Isaiah, you will see him speaking about other matters, and suddenly, in the middle of them, he says: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel.” What is this, you may ask? Where did that come from? Yes, this passage is about Him. Do you understand? These, then, are things that we Orthodox Christians ought to know, so that we may be unconquerable in our certainty that what we believe is true. Shall I tell you something else? I believe I mentioned it the last time I spoke with you: even today there are realities that a person can reach out and touch. For we have ceased to believe. “If it is not right here,” someone says...

Have you seen it yourself? Which of you gentlemen, ladies, or young women has gone to the Holy Land at Pascha? Some may have gone; others may have heard about it from people close to them, and so on. Tell me: which people have received the light of the Resurrection ever since Christ’s Resurrection took place? To which people does Christ give the light of the Resurrection? To no one but the Orthodox. Shall we therefore accept Him as God on this account as well? Is that not terribly self-important? Do the Roman Catholics ever receive the light of the Resurrection? Never. Do the Armenians receive it? Never.

Do the Copts receive it? Never. Only the Orthodox do, and no one else. On one occasion the Orthodox were forced out and shut outside, while someone else went inside to bring forth the light, but he could not. Then the column outside split open—the split remains to this day—and the Orthodox Patriarch, who was standing outside, received the light there. The Orthodox faithful saw it, while the man inside struggled in vain. Then the Turk who was keeping guard above—apparently they pushed him—cried out, “This is the true Allah; this is the true God.” They pushed him, and he fell to the ground and was killed. His tomb is still there, and he is regarded as a martyr. “How can I remain silent?” Scripture says. “The stones will cry out.” The stones speak. I myself have photographed that column, which remains split to this day.

That is where the light of the Resurrection came forth. Tell me, what further testimony do we need? What do the others have that compares with this? Suppose all that the Orthodox Church does is mere trickery, while the teachings of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Protestants, or the other offshoots I mentioned are correct. Would Christ command that this spectacle take place there? Does God play such jokes? Tell me. Can such a claim stand before any rational mind? Why should I seek out and learn what the Jehovah’s Witnesses say or what Roman Catholicism says? Tell me, Mr. Pope, have you ever received the light of the Resurrection? Does Christ have something against you personally? No, He does not. You know what happened with Saint Nicholas.

Saint Nicholas was transferred from Myra in Lycia to Bari in Italy. The separation between the Eastern Church and the Roman Church had not yet taken place. Whenever the Divine Liturgy was celebrated, myrrh was gathered from the feet of the relic of Saint Nicholas, and they prolonged the Divine Liturgy as much as possible so that they could collect more of it. But when the schism occurred and the Roman Catholics departed from the Church, the relic ceased to give forth myrrh when the Roman Catholic rite was celebrated. They then sold it to the Russians, while continuing to claim that they still possessed the relic. That is what they write in their books and announcements, and so forth. No visitor has ever seen the Saint’s relic there.

It is said that they sold it for this reason. If you wish, read the Synaxarion of Saint Nikodemos for May 21. There you will find details about what I am telling you. Why, then, should I now concern myself with what will become of the Roman Catholics, the Protestants, or the others? I love You, Christ. Why should I want to hear whom others follow? I have not opened Holy Scripture to recite passages proving that Christ is God. I have simply spoken to you from the living reality of the Church, which has confirmed the decrees for us. Do I need anything more in order to understand that we possess the truth?

I must be watchful and hold fast to it. Do we have only a few miracles from the holy icons of the Most Holy Theotokos, which they mock while calling us idolaters? What is an icon, sir, that you throw it away? What is this? Christ depicted on paper. And what is that up there? An icon of Christ. If it also shows the Most Holy Theotokos on one side and John the Beloved on the other, what would we say? It tells us that while Christ was upon the Cross, He said, “Woman, behold your son; behold your mother.” Does it not say that here? The icon says the same thing there. Why is it idolatry when it reminds me of that event? Saint Gregory the Theologian says:

Saint Gregory the Theologian says, “Never have I seen the Cross of the Lord and passed it by without tears.” But this troubles Satan, because it brings scenes and events back to our minds. When you enter an Orthodox church and simply look at the Last Judgment—even as you are leaving—your hair will stand on end. In fact, they place it above the way out, toward the narthex, so that it may remind us: “O man, you are going out of the Ark. Take care, for a flood awaits you—this and this will happen.” It shows Christ upon the throne, with a table before Him and the Gospel upon it. Beneath the Gospel hangs a thread, and from that thread a balance is suspended, with the demons placing things on one side and the angels on the other.

Tartarus is on one side and Paradise on the other. Is it in Satan’s interest for such things to exist and to be brought to our remembrance? Do we understand this or not? Do we not have miracles? A Jew once took a knife and wounded an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, and blood sprang from it and anointed him. Am I the one saying this? Who is it that says it? Blood sprang from it and anointed him. What do we lack? We have miracles on the Holy Mountain. There is the icon of Saint Nicholas of the Oyster. Have you ever visited Pantokrator Monastery? It remained in the sea for two hundred and fifty years. To save it, the monks had thrown it into the sea. Then, after two hundred and fifty years, the Saint appeared to a monk and said, “Go and bring me up from down there, where I am in the sea.” The monk went, found the icon standing upright, and brought it out.

It had an oyster here on its forehead after two hundred and fifty years in the sea. It is still there to this day; I have photographed it and venerated it. And when they removed the oyster, blood flowed from that spot. What will these gentlemen say? Why should we Orthodox speak about them and go searching for the truth? Should we, who possess the truth, be searching for the truth?

The mercy of God has overwhelmed us. There is no room left for doubt. What can I say to you? What can I tell you against the heresies, and what can I tell you from Holy Scripture? These things prove that ours is the true faith. What need have I to do anything more? Take the Scriptures, gentlemen—the Septuagint translation. Find me a single instance of the word “Jehovah.” Then take their Bible and find me, in even one place, the word “Christ.”

The Pantokrator, God—they have altered all these titles and written “Jehovah” instead. They remove words; they have their own Scriptures. Take the New Testament and look at the final verse of the Apocalypse: “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all the Saints”—with a capital letter—“Amen.” The word “Saints” has disappeared from the Society’s Bible: it reads, “with all of us. Amen.” But the verse refers to Saints. They have changed “God is wondrous in His Saints” into “God is wondrous in His sanctuaries.” Try making sense of that. Do you understand? What else can I tell you now? No one is in danger because he lacks knowledge. He is in danger because he does not want the truth. We have tangible proofs.

That is why I do not merely believe in Christ; I know Christ. And if you think that what I have told you is true, remember that I have simply brought these things forward to refresh them in your minds. Hold on to them and guard them like a precious safeguard.

Πρέπει λοιπόν να ανατρέξει ο άνθρωπος να βρει, για να μπορέσει να παλέψει κατά κάποιον τρόπο αυτούς τους ανθρώπους και να τους περιορίσει, κατά κάποιον τρόπο, πάλι στον εαυτόν τους, μη επιτρέποντας τη μόλυνση και για τον δικό μας εαυτόν. Εγώ λοιπόν πώς θα οπλίσω τον εαυτό μου;

Ούτε εκατό ορθόδοξοι γραφικοί, και με λόγια και με επιχειρήματα ανθρώπινα, έστω κι αν εμφορούντο από Πνεύμα Άγιον, δεν μπόρεσαν να κάνουν στην άκρη τον Άρειο. Και όταν βγήκε και του λέει: «Ω Άρειε, στο όνομα του Πατρός», και φεύγει φωτιά επάνω, «και του Υιού», και πέφτει κάτω νερό, «και του Αγίου Πνεύματος», και του μένει χώμα, το κεραμίδι. Ο Άρειος είπε: «Στο όνομα του Πατρός», του λέει, και ανεβαίνει πυρ, «και του Υιού», και κατεβαίνει νερό, «και του Αγίου Πνεύματος», και του μένει κεραμίδι. Ε, δεν του λέει τα τρία ένα και το ένα τρία;

Πρώτα», και του λέει, «να πεις εσύ, αν είναι ο δικός σου». Και λέει: «Εις το όνομα της Αγίας Τριάδος, να βγει λάδι». Και άρχισε να ρέει λάδι. Δεύτερο θαύμα, αυτό που σας λέγω, στην Πρώτη Οικουμενική. Τα λόγια σταμάτησαν, οι θεωρίες σταμάτησαν, ο πόλεμος ο διαλογικός και τα επιχειρήματα σταμάτησαν. Και άρχισε η πράξις να αποδεικνύει ποιο είναι του λόγου το ασφαλές. Είναι αυτά πράγματα τα οποία είναι στις μέρες μας. Πρέπει να τα ξέρει ο Ορθόδοξος αυτά τα πράγματα, να τα έχει διαβάσει και να τα μεταδίδει, ώστε και οι επερχόμενοι να γνωρίζουν περί τίνος πρόκειται, ώστε όταν έρχεται ο λύκος να ξέρουν πώς να αντισταθούν. Γιατί δεν τα ξέρουμε αυτά; Ποιος έχει το Συναξάρι στο σπίτι του; Ποιος διαβάζει τους βίους των Αγίων και τα κατορθώματα των Αγίων;

Το λένε και οι γυναίκες, ως εκ φύσεως του φύλου. Έπρεπε με κάποιον άλλο σεβασμό και κάπως αλλιώς να αισθάνονται, να ομιλούν για τη Μητέρα του Θεού. Άμα του μιλήσεις ότι η Παναγία είναι Θεοτόκος, η ηλεκτρική εκκένωση γίνεται επάνω της. Δεν την παραδέχεται ως Θεοτόκο. Δεν τη θέλει ως Παρθένο. Δεν τη θέλει ως Αειπάρθενο. Τη θέλει σαν μια καλή γυναίκα. Αν ο Χριστός λοιπόν, κύριε Προτεστάντα —και κατ' επέκτασιν, ο Ιεχωβίτης δεν το παραδέχεται ότι είναι Θεός—, για τον Προτεστάντη, εάν ο Χριστός είναι Θεός, αυτή που τον εγέννησε πώς πρέπει να λέγεται, εφόσον εγέννησε Θεό; Μήπως θα πρέπει να λέγεται Θεοτόκος;

Να σε βοηθάει να στερεώνεσαι στην πίστη, πράγματα τα οποία δεν βλέπεις, και η πίστη σου δεν μπορεί να στερεωθεί καλά χωρίς αυτά τα εξωτερικά σημεία. Παίρνει λοιπόν ο Κύριός μας από τη Γραφή και του απαντά: «Γέγραπται γαρ, ουκ επ' άρτω μόνω ζήσεται άνθρωπος, αλλ' επί παντί ρήματι εκπορευομένω διά στόματος Θεού». Γραφικώς του απήντησε ο Χριστός μου. Κόκαλο ο Σατανάς. Τον παίρνει από εκεί και τον πηγαίνει σ' ένα πτερύγιο και του λέει: «Πήδα κάτω. Γέγραπται, είναι γραμμένο περί σου ότι θα στείλει αγγέλους να σε πιάσουν πριν πέσεις, ώστε να μην προσκόψουν σε λίθο τα πόδια σου». Και τι θα βγάλει απ' αυτό;

Είχε ένα στρείδι εδώ στο μέτωπο, διακόσια πενήντα χρόνια μέσα στη θάλασσα. Υπάρχει μέχρι σήμερα, την έχω φωτογραφίσει και την έχω ασπαστεί. Και όταν βγάλανε το στρείδι, έβγαλε αίμα από εδώ πέρα. Τι θα πουν οι κύριοι αυτοί; Τι θέλουμε εμείς οι Ορθόδοξοι να μιλάμε γι' αυτούς και να αναζητούμε εμείς την αλήθεια; Εμείς την αλήθεια να αναζητούμε, οι έχοντες την αλήθεια;
