I would ask you to allow me to say a few more words concerning Orthodoxy. There seem to be as many kinds of faith as there are people. Yet the faith is one, the truth is one, and the Church is one. Therefore, a person must believe rightly, not in his own way or according to whatever he happens to think. A Father of the Church named Eugenios says: “Not everyone who believes in something is called faithful, but the one who believes rightly; he alone both is and is called faithful.” In other words, the faithful person is not the one who believes just anything, but the one who believes rightly. He alone should be called faithful, because he alone is truly a Christian.
On the Sunday known as the First Sunday of the Fast, our Orthodox Church commemorates the restoration and triumph of the holy and venerable icons. As you know, this took place under the ever-memorable emperors of Constantinople, Michael and his mother Theodora, during the patriarchate of Saint Methodios the Confessor. Since this day commemorates the struggle against heresy and falsehood, it would be fitting to add a few words about our Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, the Orthodox Church, and thus give those who do not know an opportunity to learn that the truth is found in the one and only Church: the Orthodox Church.
We must therefore give heed to this true vine and guard this priceless treasure, which the Lord, in His love, bequeathed to us through His holy Apostles and which the Holy Fathers faithfully preserved with their sweat and even with their blood. In the fifteenth chapter of the Gospel according to John, it is written: “I am the true vine.” These, of course, are the words of the Lord. Through these words, the Lord clearly wishes to protect us from the false vines of Satan, of which, sadly, there are many in our days. Particularly worthy of our attention is the fact that
He did not simply say that He was a vine, but that He was the vine, adding specifically, “the true vine.” Jesus cannot lie. As Clement of Rome says, since He commanded us, “Do not lie,” much less would He Himself lie. He assures us that, for Him, there is one and only one vine—that is, one Church.
Other bodies that people call churches—other supposed vines—do not exist as churches in His sight. This is confirmed by the definite article “the,” as well as by the word “true.” We therefore believe that the time has come for us to understand that the Church of Christ is one: “the vine which Your right hand planted,” and which He nourishes and cherishes, as Paul tells us in Ephesians 5:29.
That Church is the Orthodox Church. It is the Church of which the Prophet David, speaking in the Holy Spirit 1,050 years before Christ, said: “Look down from heaven and see, and visit this vine”—not these vines—“and restore it”—not them—“which”—not which ones—“Your right hand planted.” This is Psalm 79:15–16. Therefore, when people today speak of many churches, and especially of uniting them, this does not appear to be correct. The Lord spoke of one vine, not of many vines. The one true vine, then, is the Orthodox
Eastern Church of Christ, “built upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord,” as Paul writes in Ephesians 2:20–21. From the time of her founding, she has preserved the unity of the faith unbroken, uncorrupted, and unchanged, in complete agreement with the faith she received from the Lord through the Apostles. In her alone has the exact theology of the Holy Trinity been kept pure and unmixed with human inventions—or rather, with human impieties. She possesses all the divine Mysteries that she received from the Lord through the Apostles.
She observes all the sacred and apostolic traditions that were handed down to her. She holds fast to Holy Scripture as spoken by the Lord through the holy Apostles and written through the Holy Spirit, permitting and accepting no merely human alteration of its wording. She received Holy Tradition from the Apostles and preserves it unharmed and unmixed with every human falsification. The sacred Creed of our holy faith and every dogma established by the Seven Holy Ecumenical Councils were entrusted to her; and she alone, by the grace of the Lord, preserves them and will continue to preserve them undiminished and undefiled. In her, above all, the words of the Apostle are fulfilled: “One Lord, one faith, one Baptism,” as he writes in Ephesians 4:5.
Only the Orthodox Church has the right to confess in her sacred Creed, “In one Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church,” because there is only one Church of Christ; all the others are churches made by human beings. Only in her, if the Lord were to come again bodily, would He find the faith He delivered intact and pure. Only in her, if the holy Apostles were to return, would they find everything they preached and handed down preserved as a precious treasure, observed and fulfilled. Only in her, if the Holy Fathers of the Seven Ecumenical Councils were to return, would they find their Canons and teachings being applied. The Orthodox Church possesses nothing of merely human origin.
She has never been governed by any human spirit, such as that of the pope, Luther, Rousseau, or others. Rather, she has always been guided and governed by the All-Holy Spirit Himself, who abides in her forever and reveals her to be the infallible standard of doctrine, “the pillar and foundation of the truth,” as Paul says in 1 Timothy 3:15. It is deeply sorrowful that some people fail to distinguish between sins and heretical beliefs. Contrary to the Canons, they extend to heretical beliefs the mercy that our Lord appointed for sinners who truly repent: “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven,” Matthew 18:22. Sadly, they apply this mercy even
to heretics and their beliefs. At most, they hold only the original instigators responsible before God, while always trying to find ways to excuse those who follow them. They also struggle to present these errors as though they were not gravely punishable and to conceal the selfish sources from which they first arose. In this way they stray from the truth and oppose the Holy Spirit, who spoke through the Apostles: through the great Paul, who declared, “If anyone preaches to you a gospel contrary to what we preached to you, let him be anathema,” and through the Holy Ecumenical Councils, which declared:
“Those who dare to believe or teach otherwise, or, following the accursed heretics, to reject the traditions of the Church, or to devise crooked and cunning schemes for overthrowing any one of the lawful traditions of the Catholic Church, we command to be deposed.” This is from the Definition of the Seventh Ecumenical Council. Sadder still is seeing Orthodox Christians
go to the West in order to receive the light of theology. In saying this, of course, we do not wish to blame the West, but our own specialists. We must understand that the God-bearing Fathers alone are the shepherds and teachers of the whole inhabited world in matters concerning the true knowledge of God and the duties we owe to God and to our neighbor.
Theology, my beloved, is revelation. This revelation is not found among heretics, Protestants, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and the like, who have rejected the interpretation of the God-bearing Fathers. The West occupies itself with the letter of Scripture, while Orthodoxy concerns herself with the spirit of Scripture. The West merely studies Scripture, while Orthodoxy—Greece—interprets Scripture. The West is content to read Scripture, while the Orthodox Church—Greece, for example—advances to the knowledge of Scripture. Therefore, the words of John Chrysostom apply to them: “Reading is not enough unless knowledge is also present.”
“For just as someone who takes food but does not digest it will never live, so someone who reads but understands nothing of what the text contains will not attain the truth.” But how can they come to know, when, as we have said, they reject the means of knowledge: the interpretation given by the divine Fathers of the early centuries? What interpretation can a heretical Protestant or a Jehovah’s Witness give after rejecting the Spirit who interprets what He Himself wrote through His servants, whether they are called prophets, Apostles, Evangelists, and so forth? Yet those who sympathize with the darkness of the West have not wished to learn the causes that brought these so-called churches into being. They have not investigated as carefully as they should have, to discover that selfishness and self-interest lie at their foundations.
What compelled the so-called papal church to cut itself off from the Orthodox Church? Sadly, the answer is known to everyone: selfishness. This Luciferian offspring was the cause of the schism, and it remains so to this day. From the first centuries of Christianity, the popes had already acquired power and displayed ambitions of conquest, desiring to bring the whole Christian and non-Christian world under their scepter. Their arrogant and domineering ambitions, however, appeared more intensely and scandalously under Pope Nicholas I, from 858 to 867.
The history of the nations of the world records many different human aberrations. Yet the human excesses committed during the Middle Ages within the so-called papal church—instigated by the popes themselves and their agents against people of their own race and faith—surpass all description. They left an everlasting and indelible stain. Fortunately, however, this deceitful invention has little influence among the Greeks. As is well known, a devout Orthodox Greek may become irreligious or even an atheist, but it is entirely impossible—or at least exceedingly rare—for him to replace the faith of his fathers. As for a few wretched people who deny both their fathers and their faith,
having failed in everything they attempted and being unwilling to live by the sweat of their own labor, they turn to the proselytizers scattered throughout our country. Those who sell the faith of their fathers for a bowl of lentils should be placed one degree below those who take their own lives. Yet such people are very few, because, fortunately, our Holy Fathers have taught us what papalism, Protestantism, and the teachings of Jehovah’s Witnesses truly are. Sadly, however, we do not take the same precautions against Protestantism that we take against the so-called papal church. And every day we see brothers of ours, acting in ignorance, joining its ranks.
For this reason, the sacred pulpit must speak and enlighten the flock about this insidious enemy called Protestantism. We have studied Protestantism historically as thoroughly as necessary, and we have reached the conclusion that it is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit for anyone to say or write that Protestantism is a Church of Christ, that it possesses the truth, or that our relations with it are therefore justified. History is Protestantism’s most formidable enemy. If history did not exist, Protestantism would bark loudly, as it does at those who do not know its history. It would hold its head high in arrogance, and there would be no evidence to contradict it.
Before Protestantism can dare to present itself as respectable, it must first erase the history of Christianity. But as long as the walls of history stand, Protestantism will be shown—at least to those willing to see—to be deceived and false. Why do we need witnesses to prove that the Protestants, whom we call Evangelicals in our country, are heretics? Let us study them historically, and let them study their own history, so that they may be convinced of their deceitful origins and their error. For, as Korais also says, in the sciences and the arts, the newest things are the best; but in religion, only the ancient things are good and perfect.
The Church of Christ, the Orthodox Church, was not born with Luther and Calvin, nor was it founded by them. The Church of Christ has its roots in venerable antiquity—in Christ, the Apostles, the Fathers, and the Ecumenical Councils—and to this day it remains one and undivided unto the ages. The true faith of Christ does not change with the times or alter with the passing years. The Church—Orthodoxy—is not changed by circumstances. The truth neither withers nor grows old, but always remains both ancient and new. But when was the religion called Protestantism born and brought into the world? A full sixteen centuries after Christ.
On April 19, 1529—you know this, my beloved—Protestantism was born in Augsburg, and there, like an infant, it uttered its first cry. There in Augsburg it was wrapped in swaddling clothes; there it took shape—not through the Apostles, so that it might be an Apostolic Church, but through Luther and Calvin, so that it might be and be called a Lutheran and Calvinist conventicle. But have you ever examined where it came from? Who were the father and mother of Protestantism? It was born from the arrogance and inexperience of the papal church. Its father was the pope’s self-interest and pride, and its mother was the so-called papal church. If the Western church—that is, the pope—had not sown the seed through its abuses of true doctrine, morality, and financial interests, and if it had not given cause for scandal and defiled religion, Protestantism would not exist today. But when Luther began this movement against the Papal Church, he did not know the Orthodox Church; and instead of returning to the mother, he turned aside onto another path, into heresy. The same applies to the Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Bethelites, or the Bible Students. Therefore, let us take heed, because none of the so-called churches is the Eastern Church except the Orthodox Church alone.
Therefore, by divine grace, we have been planted in the Orthodox Church. Let us thank the Lord for this and be grateful to Him, as well as to His Saints, who watered with their precious blood this vine called Orthodoxy, whose vinedresser is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. On this feast today, let us proclaim, “May their memory be eternal.” And since this day concerns the holy icons, allow me to add something that shows their great worth, though heretics today attack them as supposed idolatry: the dream of a fisherman.
The title reads: “A Dream Leads to the Discovery of an Icon of Christ Pantocrator Beneath the Floor of a Byzantine Chapel.” Following a dream seen by the fisherman Konstantinos Kanellos, a small icon of Christ Pantocrator was found at Karyes, in the region of Thermi on Lesbos, beneath the floor of a Byzantine chapel. It should be noted that, several months earlier, others had also dreamed that an icon existed at that spot. During excavations, two graves had been found, together with the relics of Saints Raphael and Nicholas and of others who were martyred with them. These are the newly revealed Saints of Thermi on Lesbos.
According to the fisherman Kanellos, he fell asleep aboard his fishing boat and dreamed that he was at Karyes, where Saints Raphael and Nicholas were serving the Divine Liturgy inside the chapel. Suddenly Saint Raphael approached him, handed him a pickaxe, and said, “Come, Kostas, break open the sanctuary of the Church.” Obeying this command, the fisherman took the pickaxe; but at the very first blow, a brilliant light burst forth, and the young martyr Irene appeared before him—the child whom the Turks had burned inside a large earthen jar. She held a cross in her hands and said to Kanellos, “Tell the workers to dig, remove these paving stones from the floor, and dig deep.”
“They will find the icon they are looking for.” Then, handing him the cross, she said, “Take this, and go proclaim to the unbelievers: Long live the faith!” The next morning Kanellos did not dare speak about his dream, but he saw it again on each of the following two nights. He then decided to go to Thermi. He related what he had seen in his sleep and showed the workers where they should dig. The excavations were carried out with the approval of the Metropolitan at the time, His Eminence Iakovos, and before long they uncovered in the soil a small metal icon bearing a relief image of Christ Pantocrator. Near the icon they also found sheets of paper, which may have come from the Gospel.
It should also be noted that, shortly before the icon was discovered, Efstratia Micheli came from the neighboring village of Pamfyla. She reported that she had seen the Lord descending among angels into the chapel at Karyes, holding a lighted chandelier. Meanwhile, crowds are going to the place where the icon was found in order to venerate it. This is the report we have received from Mytilene. These are the things that will consign to the smoke of Hell every kind of person who denies the Saints and their holy icons, whether they are called Reformers, Evangelicals, Protestants, millennialists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and so forth. For in this case the words of the Lord apply: “If these should keep silent, the stones would cry out.”
What, then, can they say here—that icons are idolatry? Woe to them on the day of judgment if they do not repent and believe in Orthodoxy, which alone preserves the truth. For the icon is the Gospel of those who cannot read, and a reminder for those who can. The icon presents Christ and particular events from His life upon wood, in mosaic, and in color. Just as the Gospel presents upon paper this same Christ, who once came in the flesh, so also do the holy icons.
Yet what serves as a reminder to most people, Satan seeks to remove through the heretics. That is why, as soon as a heretic comes into a home, he begins speaking to persuade us: “Take down the holy icons; burn them; trample them underfoot.” He does not tell us to take down the pictures of our parents, but the icons of our Saints and of our Most Holy Theotokos. May it never be so, Christian brethren. Continuing with the innovations of the Papal Church, allow us to add the sixth: the so-called fire of purgatory. They believe that after death sinful souls can enter it and be purified there—through the prayers of the popes, of course. But when can they be purified, and which souls can be purified?
When the deceased person’s relatives pay the required sum of money. And how much, one might ask, is this required sum? It depends on the sins of the deceased and the financial means of the living—if, of course, they do not want their loved one condemned to eternal Hell. I want you to know that, on the basis of this doctrine of purgatorial fire, the popes brought forth the notorious indulgences, supposedly instruments of salvation for both the living and the dead. These very indulgences became the cause of the protest—that is, of Luther’s movement. Martin Luther
protested against the condition of the Papal Church because of these documents of indulgence, and today, as we know, the Protestants have more than three hundred different branches. Sadly, instead of returning to Orthodoxy—to the trunk, to the Mother from which his own mother, the so-called papal church, had broken away—so that he might be saved, Luther went in the opposite direction and himself ended up in heresy. The words of our Lord were fulfilled: “If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”
As we said before,
if Luther and his followers had embraced the doctrine of the Eastern Orthodox Church, neither Protestantism nor papism would exist today. There would be Orthodoxy alone: one flock under Christ, the Chief Shepherd. Therefore, for those who do not know what caused the protest, let the others permit me to say a few words here. Martin Luther launched his protest against the pope for the following reason. Pope Leo X, being a lover of money, thought day and night about how he might devise a way to collect money, and he accomplished this by the following cunning means.
He issued indulgences—that is, documents of absolution—and wrote in them that, as Peter’s successor and Christ’s representative, he had the authority to forgive both the living and the dead, especially those dwelling in purgatorial fire. He claimed this power because the infinite treasury of merit from the sufferings of our Lord, as well as the merits of all the Saints, was under his authority. He alleged that he was collecting this money to send it to the armies fighting in the East. He therefore confidently declared through these indulgences that anyone who paid the full expenses of one soldier for an entire year
would receive forgiveness for whatever sins he might commit over a period of five years. If someone paid more, the number of years during which he was entitled to sin increased in proportion to the additional sum. He sent all these indulgences throughout Europe to be proclaimed and distributed. The custom was that when the pope issued such circulars, they were entrusted to the friars of the Order of Preachers, who would preach in their favor and sell them to the peoples of the West. Now the pope had a sister, to whom he gave indulgences worth two hundred thousand groschen
to send out and distribute wherever she wished. She sent these documents of absolution—these indulgences—to Germany. But because she too loved money and wanted to earn even more, she did not give them to the Order of Preachers, the very order to which Luther belonged as a leading member, for Luther was a papal cleric. Instead, she sold them to the Franciscan friars for more than the price set by the pope. In other words, they were sold on what we would call the black market—to outsiders. Luther therefore saw that this profitable undertaking had slipped from his hands.
Others, rather than he, were receiving its profits. He then loosened his tongue and began preaching against these indulgences, demonstrating that they did not benefit people at all, that the pope possessed no such authority, and that all these things were merely pretexts for greed and tyranny. This teaching of Luther pleased many people, especially those who had been stripped bare by the pope’s avarice, and so they accepted it. Anyone may find this account in Book Twelve of Sifaios, on page 1157. This was the occasion and the beginning of Luther’s protest.
It arose from financial loss—the loss of the profit from selling indulgences. If those indulgences had been placed in the hands of the Order of Preachers,
Luther would not have launched his protest, just as he had not done so until then. Indeed, because of the profit they brought, he might even have become their most ardent defender. But since others benefited from them, he was personally hurt by this and began preaching against both the indulgences and the pope. It was therefore the passion of avarice that kindled his anger against them, not divine zeal or a godly purpose. Luther himself admits as much in an address delivered before the Duke of Saxony, as the venerable Dositheos records: “Luther,” he says, “was exceedingly insolent and immoderately prone to anger.” Therefore, when someone cited a proverb to him concerning his insolence,
“His pride is unsurpassable”—meaning that it was not fitting for him to become so agitated—Luther replied with the same insolence and boldness: “This affair neither began for God’s sake, nor will it end for God’s sake.” It was as though he were saying… Another innovation of the Papal Church is its doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of the Theotokos.
In the eighteenth century, the Vatican Council established the doctrine of the Theotokos’s supposedly immaculate conception: that she did not partake of ancestral sin and consequently is divine. As you understand, this is blasphemous and unacceptable. For we know that Mary is the daughter of Joachim and Anna. We also know that she herself said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” Since she herself calls Him her Savior, how could she have been immaculately conceived—that is, sinless? From what did He save her, so as to be her Savior? Certainly from ancestral sin. For she was not immaculately conceived; she is the daughter
of Joachim and Anna. So in this matter as well, the so-called papal church is in error. Therefore, let us be watchful. Another innovation, the eighth in order, is the doctrine of papal primacy. In addition to its other innovations, the so-called papal church also speaks of the primacy of the popes. Yet the Holy Fathers and the Canons of the Ecumenical Councils demonstrate that the Pope was never regarded as the supreme and infallible head of the Church, but as first in rank—first among equals, as we say. He was granted precedence of honor because he was the bishop of the imperial capital.
These same privileges of honor were later granted to the bishop of Constantinople, because Constantinople became the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. The Orthodox Church, however, has never accepted this primacy of the popes, nor their supposed infallibility. The Orthodox Church believes that her head is Jesus Christ. She remains faithful to her sacred traditions, refutes all these sophistries of papal arrogance with clear evidence, and exposes as false the teachings of papism, which boasts of infallible inspiration yet cannot understand that it labors in vain and kicks against the goads.
The head of the Church, beloved, is not the Pope, but Christ. Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, presents Christ as the head of Christ’s Church, saying: “The God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, having raised Him from the dead, seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above every principality and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age; and He gave Him as head over all things to the Church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.” Ephesians 1:20–23. And again: “Let us grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ.”
Ephesians 4:15. Elsewhere he says again: “And He is the head of the body, the Church; He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He might have the preeminence.” Colossians 1:18. And in Colossians 2:8 he says: “Beware lest anyone take you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elements of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, and you are made full in Him, who is the head of every principality and authority.” Yet although Paul says that Christ is the head of the Church, the so-called papal church says that the head is not Christ, but the Pope.
To justify this self-serving innovation, it speaks of two heads instead of one, Jesus. It speaks of a visible and an invisible head. It calls its own head visible and Christ’s headship invisible. And it claims that, in His name, whichever Pope holds office must govern Christ’s Church on earth. But who ever gave them such authority? That is the question. Christ is also the head of the Church of God, and God the Father twice revealed Him to the Church by a living voice from heaven and from the cloud. From heaven, when Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
And from the cloud, when Jesus was transfigured on Mount Tabor before the three disciples—Peter, James, and John—the same voice was heard again: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him.” In other words: “You Jews and all people have known Me until now as your Lord and your God. But from this moment onward, it is My good pleasure, My will and desire, that you obey My beloved Son, who is Jesus Christ.” Therefore, those who obey the voice of the Father and consequently submit to the Son have the Father also. But those who deny the Son do not have the Father either.
John says in his First Epistle, 2:23: “Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either.” Therefore, those who replace the headship of the Son with another head—for example, whichever Pope holds office—not only disobey the voice of the Father but also oppose Him. Woe to them, according to what is written: “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” The foundation, my beloved, is Christ, not the Pope. “No one,” Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 3:11, “can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” Christ, he says—not the Pope. And again, as Holy
Scripture says: “Having been built upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.” And elsewhere it says: “Behold, I lay in the foundations of Zion a costly stone, chosen and precious, a cornerstone in her foundations; and whoever believes in Him shall not be put to shame.” Isaiah 28:16. From these passages, then, we see that Christ is not only the head of the Church but also her foundation. Yet the Roman pontiff of each age—evidently carried away by the example of the former Caesars of Rome—appropriated for himself the headship of the Church and says that Christ is the invisible head of the Church, while the Pope
is the visible head. By extension, he also appropriated her foundation, building his own church as he wished upon a stone in the name of Jesus. But what is written will also be fulfilled against him: “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. Everyone who falls upon that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.” The true representative of Christ on earth, my beloved, is not the Pope. After the Ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven and His sitting at the right hand of God, the Holy Spirit assumed the primacy in His Church. The Apostle Paul calls Him her Lord, saying: “Now the Lord is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:17. Christ entrusted primacy in His Church to none of the Apostles, but only to the Holy Spirit, who descended upon all the Apostles in the form of tongues of fire at holy Pentecost, as it is written: “These things I have spoken to you while remaining with you. But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and remind you of all that I have said to you.” John 14:25.
He also says: “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will announce to you the things to come.” John 16:12. And again, in John 14:18, He says: “I will not leave you orphans; I am coming to you.” From all these words of Jesus, then, the true faith and reality become clear, as you can see: the Holy Spirit possesses primacy and infallibility in the Church and guides her into all truth. He guided the divine Apostles at holy Pentecost, accompanied the miracles of the divine Paul and the other Apostles, and guided the Holy Fathers, the Martyrs, and all who were sanctified for the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
When the divine Apostles gathered in council and discussed the question of circumcision, the Apostle Peter spoke, then James, and finally they wrote to the Christians, among other things, the words we read in Acts 15:28: “For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things.” From this it is clear that the Apostle Peter possessed no primacy; rather, they attributed primacy to the Holy Spirit. “It seemed good,” he says, “to the Holy Spirit and to us”—not to Peter. How, then, can there be papal primacy? Where does it come from? Again, in Acts 13:2, we read: “As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said,”
“Now set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Where, then, is Peter’s primacy? “Having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia, they came near Mysia and tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them.” Where, then, is papal primacy here? “Paul was compelled by the Spirit.” And again: “And now, behold, bound by the Spirit, I go.” Paul continues in Acts 20:22, 28 and 19:5: “Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among whom the Holy Spirit has appointed you bishops, to shepherd the Church of God, which He purchased with His own blood.”
From these passages in the Acts of the Apostles, my beloved, the primacy and lordship of the Holy Spirit over the Church after the Ascension of Jesus Christ are confirmed—not the primacy of Peter or of the Pope. Therefore, let us beware of those who claim primacy and infallibility in the Church of Christ. Let me say a few words about papal primacy and the Pope’s supposed infallibility. In the year 829 after Christ, the Pope forged a letter by a monk named Isidore—you should know this—and falsely attributed it to Saint Isidore. Through these False Isidorian Decretals, he was proclaimed, supposedly by divine right,
the supreme ruler of the Church, with the right to judge everyone while being judged by no one. In the name of this false principle, which the popes proclaimed to be divinely established, they subsequently committed every unlawful and wicked act with which the history of the Middle Ages is filled. The uneducated peoples of the West believed this myth, upon which the Pope’s religious and political power was built. In this way, that illegitimate power became firmly established, and to it are due all the evils that arose in Europe: the Protestant movement, as we said, materialism, the atheism of Voltaire and the French Encyclopedists, and wars between Christians and Christians. In the papal church, beloved—which they falsely and proudly call Catholic—
it is taught as a fundamental and supposedly saving doctrine that whichever Pope holds office in Rome is the representative—pay attention to this detail—of Jesus Christ and the successor of the Apostle Peter, and consequently the first and supreme among all bishops, to whom everyone owes blind obedience. Boniface, Pope of Rome in the thirteenth century after Christ, wrote in a letter to King Philip of France, with whom he was in conflict: “We declare and proclaim that every human creature is subject to the Pope of Rome. This belief is necessary for blessedness in the age to come.” And in the creed of Pope Pius IV, we read the following confession: “I confess,” it says, “the Holy Catholic Roman Apostolic Church,”
“the mother and mistress of all other churches, and I promise true obedience to the Bishop of Rome, successor of Saint Peter, prince of the Apostles, and representative of Jesus Christ.” Do you hear that? This is also the doctrine decreed by the papists’ Council of Trent.
The Pope’s primacy was clothed with divine authority. The consequence of this teaching about primacy was the notorious doctrine of papal infallibility and, consequently, sinlessness—for one who is infallible must also be sinless and cannot sin. But if the Pope is regarded even as above witness, then he has no need of law.
He communicates directly with the Holy Spirit and has no need of advisers or even of Holy Scripture. For, being supposedly infallible, equal to God and equal to Christ, he can himself give law to the Church. His words, like his deeds, are law for the papists and for the entire so-called papal church. But this doctrine of infallibility and sinlessness is not true. History itself proves it false and wicked, because various popes disagreed with other popes—their fellow officeholders and predecessors—over the doctrines of the faith. Some of them even became heretics. Pope Honorius I fell into the Monothelite heresy and was condemned and anathematized as a heretic by the Sixth Ecumenical Council. Likewise Hadrian II, Pope of Rome, fell into the same heresy and was condemned as a heretic.
He was condemned by Leo II, Pope of Rome, who himself also fell into heresy and was condemned. Where, then, is the infallibility of the popes? The deeds and lives of the popes—especially after the schism—also expose the claim of their sinlessness and infallibility. Very many of them were utterly immoral—not merely immoral. They were murderers, corrupters, conspirators, and forgers. After the schism, they forged the False Isidorian Decretals that we mentioned earlier, in order to establish and secure papal primacy in opposition to the true Church of Christ. Apart from all the other matters we have discussed, where is their infallibility? Where is their sinlessness? Is it even possible, then, for the Holy Spirit to dwell in them? I think each one of us understands the answer.
Let us therefore beseech the Lord to help them return to their mother, the Church, and let us receive them with open arms, so that there may then be one flock under one shepherd. Amen.

Ό,τι είναι όμως υπενθύμιση στους περισσοτέρους, ο σατανάς διά των αιρετικών κοιτάζει να τις βγάλει από τη μέση. Γι' αυτό και μόλις φτάσει κάποιος αιρετικός στο σπίτι, θα μας μιλήσει να καταλάβει. Κατεβάσουμε τις Άγιες εικόνες, να τις κάψουμε, να τις ποδοπατήσουμε. Δεν μας λέει να κατεβάσουμε τις εικόνες των γονέων μας, αλλά τις εικόνες των Αγίων μας, της Παναγίας μας και της Θεοτόκου. Μη γένοιτο, αδελφοί χριστιανοί. Στη συνέχεια των καινοτομιών της Παπικής Εκκλησίας, να επιτρέψετε να προσθέσουμε και την έκτη, η οποία είναι το καθαρτήριο λεγόμενον πυρ. Με αυτό πιστεύουν ότι οι αμαρτωλές ψυχαί μετά θάνατον μπορούν, εισερχόμενες εις αυτό, να καθαρίζονται και διά της προσευχής βέβαια των παπών. Αλλά πότε όμως θα μπορούν να καθαριστούν και ποιες θα μπορούν να καθαριστούν;
