Summary

The lecturer supports Christian unity only when it preserves Orthodox truth and follows Roman Catholic renunciation of doctrinal innovations. Against the Filioque, he argues from Scripture and the ecumenical councils that the Holy Spirit proceeds eternally from the Father alone and that no one may alter the Nicene Creed. The lecture begins its next critique by defending leavened Eucharistic bread through Christ’s teaching that He is the living Bread from heaven.

That is the situation. As you yourselves know, there is much discussion about the whole question of Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians, and a new effort is being made to restore relations between these two so-called Churches. Indeed, as you also know, the head of the Western Church recently made a major effort, going so far as to visit the Ecumenical Patriarchate itself. The Orthodox Church will always be cautious about such a reunion, as we have said, because the Western Church continues to hold views that do not accord with the spirit of Orthodoxy or of the Gospel.

Those who are seriously concerned with Orthodoxy, the true faith, and the salvation of mankind in general are deeply troubled.

We are not opposed to this union; we are opposed to the way it may be brought about. It must not be founded on a misguided kind of love that casts truth aside. For if this love is not joined to truth—to the true faith, to the truth that flows from our Lord Himself, who is the truth and the life—then it will produce entirely contrary results, both for those who seek this union, namely the Western Christians, and for us, if we help to bring it about by making concessions. Many people in our company and among those close to us have asked whether we have any evidence to contribute in this matter. If we do, they ask us to present it. We are glad to do so.

So I shall present once again some things I wrote in the past concerning the innovations of the Papal Church. Unless these innovations are abolished, I do not believe the Orthodox Church will enter into this union. Nevertheless, we pray that the Western Christians will acknowledge their doctrinal errors, so that there may be one flock, as the Lord desires. As for what has been requested of us, allow me to refer to something that occupied my attention some time ago.

I was prompted to write several articles about these innovations by something that happened on Rhodes. It is a rather old incident. It took place during the Roman Catholic celebration of Pascha in 1961. At the time, I read in an evening newspaper dated April 5 that something extraordinary had occurred between certain Roman Catholic dignitaries and an Orthodox Christian.

For surely nothing happens without a cause or a lesson. We published the report at the time in a magazine that we circulated. The correspondent’s report from Rhodes bore the headline: “The egg that an Orthodox Christian cracked with a Roman Catholic was hollow and contained only a liquid resembling tears.” That was the headline. More specifically, the report said: “Here in our city—that is, in Rhodes—an event is being widely discussed which took place at a dinner held by the local Roman Catholics during their celebration of Roman Catholic Pascha last Sunday.”

“On Sunday evening,” he writes, “the local Greek Roman Catholics, while celebrating their Pascha, invited to their gathering French members of parliament who had arrived here, as well as the mayors of Cannes and Toulouse. Among the French parliamentarians was Mr. Ioannis Koumaros, a Greek-French man of the theater and a member of parliament, who remains Orthodox by faith. At one point Mr. Koumaros was offered a red egg to crack against the egg of another guest. When he cracked it, the egg was found to be hollow—completely empty—and to contain only a few drops of liquid resembling tears. The incident astonished all those at the table,”

“and Mr. Koumaros most of all. He asked for a second egg and cracked that one as well. But to his even greater amazement, and of course to the amazement of all the guests, the second egg was also found to be hollow and to contain only drops of liquid. Mr. Koumaros did not wish to continue.” This is what the correspondent from Rhodes reported. As you understand, it is now for each person to draw his own conclusions. In any case, the matter is not as simple or insignificant as it may appear at first sight.

It is important and worthy of attention, because if one considers that these eggs were not spoiled by chance—

that they were not merely hollow by accident, as we say in everyday language, but had been deliberately emptied, not by human hands but perhaps by God Himself—then the matter changes. It would seem to have come from God and to have happened miraculously, because although the eggs were hollow, empty, and without contents, they still retained their weight. Thus they deceived at least five or six people, including Mr. Koumaros himself. For as we know, from the time an egg leaves the hen until it arrives dyed at the table and is finally cracked, it must pass through many hands—through many different people.

First, there is the person who takes it from the nest; second, the person who brings it to market; third, the person who buys it; fourth, the person who dyes it; fifth, the person who brings the dyed egg to the table; and sixth, the person who cracks it—in this case, Mr. Koumaros. Is it logically possible, then, that both eggs could have escaped the notice of all these people? And after what happened with the first egg, could the second possibly have gone unchecked? Could so many people naturally have failed to notice? Certainly not! Only supernaturally could something with no contents appear to be full. Perhaps God wished to teach them—

perhaps to make something known. God wanted to say something. But what did He wish to say? What did the Lord wish to teach through those tears, as they called them? What else, except that Mr. Koumaros, as an Orthodox Christian, should not have been there at that time? For how can Orthodox Christians celebrate together with the Papists and confess together the Resurrection in Jesus, when the Papists, by their conduct, reject His teaching and establish doctrines of their own? The Lord therefore taught Mr. Koumaros that it is a sorrowful thing for him, and for all who think as he does, to believe that Orthodoxy and Papism are the same and differ in nothing, so that we may celebrate together with them and exchange festal greetings.

It is truly sorrowful, because anyone who imagines that Christ goes wherever human pride invites Him fails to understand that Christ is not called to follow us. Whatever the Western Church may believe, it is we who are called, if we desire, to follow Christ. He proclaims, “Whoever desires to come after Me,” as it is written in Mark 8:34—not, “Whoever desires Me to follow after him,” but whoever desires to follow after Me. Therefore, I believe it is time for us to understand that Christ has only one Church on earth, whether we are able to comprehend this or not, and that Church is the Orthodox Church. She bears the number one; and although she bears the number one, there is no other Church bearing the number two—

not for Christ, certainly. For us human beings there are many churches; indeed, hundreds today present themselves as churches. Nevertheless, we must know that the One, Holy, Eastern, Apostolic, and Catholic Church is the Orthodox Church. The Lord founded her; His Apostles proclaimed her; His Saints upheld and guarded her; and the Holy Spirit abides in her and sanctifies her. Outside her there is no salvation. Those who imagine that Orthodoxy and Papism are one and the same are unfortunate indeed. And those Orthodox Christians who are preparing—

to sit down and discuss the union of the so-called Churches must also be very careful. For Orthodoxy has nothing to negotiate with anyone outside her. All those people are called to return, my beloved, and indeed to return unconditionally. They must ask forgiveness for themselves and for their fathers because of the harm they have caused to millions of souls. Then, after they have been baptized and chrismated, may forgiveness be granted to them. For Orthodoxy faces no question of union, but rather the return to her of those who have fallen away. Yes.

My beloved, a person may have commercial, social, or practical dealings with those of other confessions, but not religious relations. In matters of faith, Christ has the final word, and He certainly rejects all pride and self-interest in His religion. Even Holy Matrimony, which concerns religion and is a great Mystery, as Paul says, should not be entered into with those of another confession. No—unless they conform to the order and the Canons of the Orthodox Church. This, then, is an opportunity to remind our beloved listeners of a number of innovations introduced by the so-called Papal Church, so that we may be watchful and approach them only with great caution and prayer.

The most serious innovations of the Papal Church include the teaching that the Holy Spirit proceeds also from the Son. This is a grave matter. Second, instead of Baptism they practice sprinkling. Third, they have introduced unleavened bread instead of leavened bread into their so-called liturgy. They also believe that the consecration of the Precious Gifts takes place through the words, “Take, eat,” and, “Drink of it, all of you,” rather than through the invocation of the Holy Spirit and the blessing of the priest. Moreover, during Holy Communion they do not give the chalice to the laity, but have reserved it for themselves, despite our Lord’s clear command: “Drink of it, all of you.” They have also introduced the so-called fire of purgatory, together with the supposed treasury of surplus merits and their distribution to those who request them. Further innovations include the Immaculate Conception of the Theotokos, papal primacy, and papal infallibility. All these are fundamental doctrinal matters. They are not details or secondary questions. They are matters of primary importance.

Man sets himself against the Holy Spirit when he makes laws of his own concerning matters on which the Church, through the Holy Spirit, has already pronounced from the earliest days of her foundation. Let us say a few words about the first innovation, the Filioque, the phrase “and from the Son.” The Western Church plainly added “and from the Son” to the eighth article of the Nicene Creed—that is, to the Creed—teaching that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and from the Son, contrary to the words of the Lord. He said: “When the Comforter comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me,” as we read in John 15:26. This addition, “and from the Son,” as we see, divides the hypostasis, the person, of the Holy Spirit, because it also makes the Son into a Father, which is blasphemous and heretical. My beloved, the Second Ecumenical Council, when it completed the Nicene Creed of the First Ecumenical Council, decreed that no one had the right to add anything to the Creed or remove anything from it. I also want you to know that representatives of the popes of that time signed the acts of both Councils. For the Son is begotten from the Father alone, and the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father alone.

They are two shoots from one root—brothers, so to speak—each having His cause in the One who is without cause, the first and absolute Cause. They are outside time, everlasting, unchanging—eternal, as we would say—because they receive their personal, hypostatic being simultaneously, not at different times, from the Father, who is outside time, everlasting, unchanging, and eternal. The Father is, and at once the Son is, and at once and together with them the Holy Spirit is. That is, the Father begets the Word, the Son, and causes the Spirit to proceed toward the Word and the Son, and through Him toward the Church. For this reason the Lord said, “Whom the Father will send in My name”—that is, the Comforter, whom the Father will send in the name of the Lord—as we read in John 14:26.

The representative of Christ’s Church militant on earth, then, is the Comforter, the Spirit of truth: perfect God from the perfect God and Father, immortal and infallible. Peter, the other Apostles, the Holy Fathers, and the teachers of the Church are sinful and mortal human beings, yet faithful servants of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the decisions they make when they assemble together in the Holy Spirit possess lawful authority for the Church; the private decisions of one person or another do not. Those so-called shepherds or teachers who oppose the decisions and Canons of the Holy Apostles and the Ecumenical Councils, or the sacred texts of Holy Scripture, have gone astray and are building upon sand.

Therefore, their innovations and councils are invalid and unlawful, because they oppose the decisions of the Holy Apostles and the Ecumenical Councils, as well as the texts of Holy Scripture. Another innovation is the so-called sprinkling in place of Baptism. Although the Lord gave the clearest command that we should be baptized, the Papists oppose Him and say, “No, we shall be sprinkled.” As you know, the Lord said plainly: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:19. And in Mark 16:15–16 He says:

“He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned.” Yet they devise cunning sophistries, reject Baptism, and sprinkle instead.

They justify themselves by saying that, being infallible, they prescribed sprinkling instead of Baptism because of the natural conditions affecting water, or supposedly to keep infants from danger—despite the Lord’s explicit command. Baptism is from God; sprinkling is from man who has fallen away from God. But the command is: “We ought to obey God rather than men,” for “God is true, though every man is a liar,” as we read in Acts 5:29 and Romans 3:4. In other words, Baptism is from Christ, whereas sprinkling is from the inventor of evil—that is, Satan.

Christ is true and is Truth itself, whereas the devil is a liar and the father of lies, and there is no truth in him, as John writes: “When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of it.” Every person, however, is free either to follow Truth itself, which is Christ, as the Apostles, the Councils, and the Fathers did, and so receive the crown; or to follow the arch-liar and be condemned, as we might say. For Orthodoxy, Baptism means the immersion of the whole body in water. Holy Baptism is a type of the death of the old Adamic man, whereas sprinkling is

a subversion and, we might say, a mockery of Holy Baptism. Our Lord Jesus Christ did not command sprinkling, but Baptism. Nor did He say that merely invoking the names of the Holy Trinity completes Baptism. First comes the Baptism, and then the invocation: “Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Therefore, neither Baptism alone, without the invocation, completes the initiation of those being baptized, nor does the invocation alone, without Baptism, but both together. Every contradiction of and opposition to the words of the Lord Jesus is therefore sin. This is why we must be watchful.

Our Lord Jesus Christ received the baptism of metanoia, of repentance, from John the Baptist and Forerunner, with one immersion, being obedient to the commandment and righteousness of God.

He did this so that the devil might have no accusation against Him. Therefore, when John tried to prevent Him from being baptized by him, He said: “Permit it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John baptized Him with one immersion in the name of the one God, because the Holy Trinity had not yet been revealed. But Jesus first observed the Mosaic Law, down to its smallest detail, and afterward established the law of the Gospel. He then commanded the Apostles to baptize in the name of the Father—one immersion; in the name of the Son—two; and in the name of the Holy Spirit—three. He did not say, “Baptize them in the name of the Holy Trinity,” with one immersion. He pronounced the names separately, three times, according to each hypostasis, each Person. Baptism, my beloved!

By its very meaning, Baptism signifies death. The divine Paul teaches us about death in relation to Baptism, or the typological death enacted through Holy Baptism, saying: “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore, through Baptism we were buried with Him into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in the likeness of His death, we shall also share in His Resurrection.”

Water is an element and instrument of death. Any living body submerged in water is drowned by it, whereas a living body sprinkled with water not only does not die, but is refreshed and made better. What type of death, then, is there in sprinkling? We shall continue our discussion of Baptism and sprinkling shortly. As we continue examining the innovations of the Papal Church, let us add something about Paul’s word “united.” He says that we have become “united with Him in the likeness of His death.” To be united in growth means that two or more grains of wheat, sown together in the earth, spring up and grow together.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, like a grain of wheat, fell into the earth and died so that He might rise and bear much fruit, as He Himself said: “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” Is this not what we read in John 12:24? In the same way, through the threefold immersion of Holy Baptism, we die and are buried together in Christ, becoming united with Him and sharing in the death of Christ. Consequently, we also become united with Him and share in His Resurrection. When we are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, we confess that we deserve death because of our sins.

In a certain sense, we die. But when people are sprinkled in the name of the Pope, so to speak, since he is the one who prescribed sprinkling, they are outwardly refreshed with water, but in reality they share with him in moral death and, at bodily death, are buried with him in the lake of fire, separated from Jesus Christ eternally, my beloved. This is why we must be watchful.

Transgression of the divine Law is reckoned as sin, and it is healed only through metanoia—repentance—through confession, through accepting the divine Law, and through putting it into effect. Refusal to repent, however, leads the transgressor into impiety and then, it would not be wrong to say, into heresy.

The distortion of the divine Law and of the texts of Holy Scripture is reckoned as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Transgression can be healed, but distortion is incurable. What does John say in his First Catholic Epistle, chapter 5, verse 16? “There is sin leading to death, and there is sin not leading to death.” Because of the seriousness of the difference between Baptism and sprinkling, it is fitting to present several doctrinal testimonies from the Canons, the Councils, and the judgments of prominent Saints among the Fathers of our Church. In this way, the truth and the error will be revealed together. We should also bear in mind that the Ecumenical Councils

based their decisions against heresies in general upon the Gospel, Holy Tradition, and the eighty-five Apostolic Canons. First, through the Symbol of Faith—that is, the Creed—they defined the dogma of the true faith and excluded from the Church those who did not embrace it. Then, through written decisions, they defined the Mysteries and the duties of clergy and laity. These decisions they called conciliar Canons, and anyone who wishes can find them in the Sacred Rudder of our Church.

For example, the fiftieth Canon of the Holy Apostles says the following concerning our subject: “If any bishop or priest does not perform three immersions in the one initiation, but performs only one immersion, given into the death of the Lord, let him be deposed. For the Lord did not say, ‘Baptize into My death,’ but, ‘Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.’” On this subject, one may also consult the seventh Canon of the Second Ecumenical Council, as well as the forty-sixth and forty-seventh Canons of the Holy Apostles. Dionysius the Areopagite, for example, also spoke

about the threefold immersion. He says: “The symbolic teaching mystically instructs the one who is being baptized in a sacred manner, through the three immersions in water, to become an imitator of the God-begun, three-day burial of Jesus, the Giver of Life.” And again he says: “The hierarch baptizes him”—that is, the catechumen—“three times, through the three immersions and emersions of the one being initiated, invoking the threefold hypostasis, the three Persons, of the divine blessedness”—that is, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Athanasius the Great, that pillar of Orthodoxy, likewise says: “Just as Christ died and rose on the third day, so we too die in Baptism and rise again.”

“For he immerses the child in the baptismal font three times and raises the child up again. This signifies the death and the Resurrection of Christ.” He says that when we lower the child into the baptismal font three times and raise the child again, this signifies the death, the three-day burial, and the Resurrection of our Christ. Here, allow me a brief parenthesis. What do we see? In the days of Athanasius the Great—we are now around the third century—he speaks of “immersing the child in the baptismal font.” Therefore, infant Baptism existed in the days of Athanasius the Great. The Protestants and all those associated with them are therefore speaking falsely when they wait until they are thirty years old, like our Lord, before being baptized—as though the Lord had received a Baptism of salvation rather than a baptism of repentance. Our Lord was baptized

with a baptism of repentance, not a Baptism of salvation. Infant Baptism has therefore existed from those early days. Our Church has baptized infants from her very first days, and these gentlemen who appeared in 1519 and now come to correct the Orthodox Church are mistaken. Basil the Great, the Revealer of Heavenly Things, says: “Through three immersions and an equal number of invocations, the Mystery of Baptism is completed, so that the bodies of those being baptized may be buried in the water.” The divine John Chrysostom says: “As the womb contains the embryo, so the water contains the believer.” Just as the womb holds and contains the embryo, so the water receives the believer. In other words, he compares the baptismal font to another womb. The immersion...

means dying together with Christ, and the rising from the water means rising together with Him. When a person is immersed, he dies as our Christ died; and when he rises from the water, he rises together with our Christ. As a conclusion, then, to this innovation—the replacement of Baptism with sprinkling—we add the following: Baptism is the first law given by Jesus Christ to His disciples. “He who believes,” He told them, “and is baptized will be saved. But he who does not believe”—and therefore is not baptized, but merely sprinkled—“will be condemned.” Let us not deceive ourselves, whether we ourselves or the followers of sprinkling and the supporters of these innovations. We shall now speak about another innovation found in the so-called Western Church,

which we Orthodox, of course, do not follow. It concerns unleavened and leavened bread. Through Moses, the heavenly Father gave the Jews manna in the wilderness, which they call bread from heaven—bread, not unleavened bread, but bread. “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven.’” The subject, then, is bread. “I am the Bread of Life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. I am the living Bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this Bread, he will live forever.”

“And the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world. Amen, amen, I say to you: unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. He who eats this bread will live forever.” This is what the Evangelist John writes in chapter 6, verses 32–59. But that bread was the shadow, the type, and the likeness of the true Bread. The true Bread is Jesus, whom the good Father gave from heaven; those who eat of Him will never die. Having first taught and explained in words the food of the Bread that came down from heaven, Jesus then gave the Apostles in actual fact this true bread of the Holy Eucharist: His Body and His Blood, as we know.

We read in Matthew 26:26: “As they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it, and broke it”—that is, He divided it—“and gave it to the disciples and said, ‘Take, eat; this is My Body,’” and so forth. According to Saint Ignatius the God-bearer, the flesh and blood of Jesus are the antidote to death. By eating and drinking them, mortal man, made subject to death because of ancestral sin, becomes immortal. For just as sin and death entered mankind through eating the forbidden fruit in Paradise, so through eating the flesh and drinking the blood of Jesus from the chalice,

righteousness and life enter in, overcoming death, my beloved.

The divine Apostles knew above all that bread, and not unleavened wafers, was to be used, because they had received this from Jesus Himself, and with it they celebrated the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. What do we read in Acts 2:42? “They continued steadfastly in the teaching of the Apostles and in fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.” They called the Mystery “the breaking of bread” and “fellowship.” Paul likewise received bread from Jesus, as we read in Acts 20:7–11: “On the first day of the week”—that is, on our Sunday—“when the disciples had gathered to break bread, Paul spoke to them. Then he went upstairs, broke bread and ate, and after speaking for a long time, until daybreak, he departed.”

And again he says: “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus, on the night in which He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it”—He divided it—“and said, ‘Take, eat; this is My Body, which is broken for you,’” and so forth. This is in 1 Corinthians 11:23 and the verses that follow. This is precisely what the Orthodox Church, the one Church, preserves and observes: it offers the bloodless sacrifice with bread. The Westerners, however, claiming to be infallible and without error, have used unleavened wafers instead of leavened bread since the eleventh century, arguing that Christ also ate the Passover with unleavened bread. They base this both on Matthew, who writes, “Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, ‘Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?’” and on Mark and Luke, who write: “On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, ‘Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?’” We read this in Mark 14:12 and Luke 22:7. But these passages do not have the meaning the Westerners give them, because the Church of Christ did not use unleavened wafers, but leavened bread. So it is rightly asked: who knows and interprets this better—the pope of the eleventh century, or the Orthodox Church of Christ,

which had used leavened bread from its very foundation, and of which the Papists themselves—here is the crucial point—were members before their official departure from Orthodoxy in 1053? Certainly the Church of Christ, and not the pope. The first inventor of the use of unleavened wafers was Leo IX. Moreover, the claim that the Lord celebrated the Mystical Supper with unleavened bread was shown to be false, because leavened bread was found—indeed, the very bread handed down by the Lord. I do not know whether you are aware of one particular detail. Listen to this. Nicholas of Hydruntum relates in his work Against the Unleavened Wafers that when the Franks captured Constantinople, they found in the imperial treasury pieces of the Precious Cross, the Savior’s crown of thorns, His sandals, and a nail. They also found, in a hollow gold case adorned with precious stones and pearls, a loaf of bread from which the Lord had given to the Apostles. The case bore this inscription: “Here lies the divine Bread which Christ distributed to His disciples at the supper: ‘Take, eat; this is My Body.’” Because it was leavened, the Westerners who found it—the Bishop of Albestania and the bishop-elect of Bethlehem—wanted to conceal it. But by God’s good pleasure they were unable to do so. The truth of this account is also attested by

George of Corfu, who flourished around the year 1146. If anyone wishes to find what I am reading and relating at this moment, it may be found in the Rudder, in the note on the Seventieth Apostolic Canon, pages 87–88. Eustratios Argentis also writes about bread in his work Against the Unleavened Wafers, as does Nicholas Boulgaris in his Sacred Catechism.

Let us not be led astray by this. Now, I want you to know that these passages do not have the meaning the Westerners give them. They misinterpret both “on the first day of Unleavened Bread” and “the first day of Unleavened Bread.” These words, my beloved, indicate the reason for the preparation, not the time when the meal was eaten. In other words, because the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover was sacrificed, was approaching, the preparations were made two days beforehand—not on the day when it was sacrificed. We Orthodox must pay attention to this and not be deceived. The disciples therefore prepared the Passover on Thursday, the fifth day of the week, and ate it with Jesus. Then they went out to Gethsemane, the place where Jesus was arrested by the Pharisees. They ate a new Passover,

not the Jewish Passover. The Jewish Passover was sacrificed on the following day, the sixth day of the week—that is, Friday—toward evening, and it was eaten that night with unleavened bread. The following day, our Saturday, was called the first day of Unleavened Bread, because it was the first, and six more days of Unleavened Bread followed it. Besides, if our Lord had dared to eat the Passover with unleavened bread on Thursday evening, nothing further would have been needed. As a transgressor of the Mosaic Law, He could simply have been stoned. There would have been no need for false witnesses or any other accusations. Proof that this is how matters stood is found in John 18:28. What does it say there?

“Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they”—that is, the Pharisees—“did not enter the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.” This took place on Friday morning. They did not enter the Praetorium, therefore, because they were going to eat the Passover later that day. Thus Christ our Lord did not eat the Jewish Passover. This passage confirms that Jesus and His disciples did not eat unleavened bread and the Passover lamb at the supper of the previous night, because that was not the day of Unleavened Bread and the Passover. They did not eat the Passover prescribed by the Law while seated and with bread. The Passover prescribed by the Law was eaten with unleavened bread, while standing, with their waists girded, as we see in chapter 12 of

Exodus. Moreover, as I told you, no accusation was made against Jesus and His disciples that they had supposedly eaten the Passover while seated, or that they had eaten the Jewish Passover on Thursday evening when the Passover began on Saturday. The Lord, my beloved, ate with His disciples His own twofold Passover, of the body and of the soul, both with bread. As for the bodily Passover, the Evangelists do not tell us whether they ate a lamb or not. But concerning the spiritual Passover, they tell us that instead of a lamb, the Lamb of God took bread, blessed it, and said: “This is My Body; take, eat.” On the following day, Friday, He also sacrificed Himself in place of the lamb, becoming both the One who offers

and the Offering. Thus the first Bread offered in sacrifice is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, and whoever eats this Bread will live forever. Jesus breathed His last upon the Cross at the ninth hour on Friday—that is, at three o’clock in the afternoon by our reckoning. At the hour when the Passover was eaten, Jesus lay in His empty tomb. The disciples, scattered in fear, groaned in anguish until they heard that immortal proclamation awakening them: “He is risen; He is not here.” Consequently, this claim of the Papists—that Jesus supposedly ate the Jewish Passover, in order to support their innovation—is shown to be utterly false. Let us be watchful.

Let us not be deceived; and let them also take care not to be deceived. Another innovation, the fourth in order, is their teaching that the change of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ occurs merely through the pronouncement of the Lord’s words, “Take, eat.” This is certainly wrong, because the Lord first blessed the bread and only afterward invited the disciples, saying, “Take, eat.” Likewise, after giving thanks over the cup, He said, “Drink from it, all of you.” Their teaching is therefore false. Having once embraced the primacy, they unfortunately proceed by logical sequence and consequence to embrace every teaching that follows from it.

They accept every consequence arising from this supposedly infallible theory of the popes, disregarding the Lord’s words, plainly because of their pride. This is why we must be watchful.

Their fifth innovation is that they exclude the laity from receiving the Blood from the chalice, permitting this only to the clergy, contrary to the Lord’s words, “Drink from it, all of you,” which we read in Matthew 26:27. That is what He says. They justify their innovation by claiming that they combine—that is, mingle—the wine, the Blood, with the Body, following Jewish customs concerning leaven. In this way they make what are called crackers, wafers, or hosts, through which they give communion to the laity. On this point we are right. But we shall stop here and, God willing, continue in another talk.

και ουχί το Ιουδαϊκόν. Το Ιουδαϊκόν Πάσχα εθύετο την επομένη ημέρα, την έκτην ημέρα της εβδομάδος, την Παρασκευή δηλαδή, προς εσπέραν, και εθύετο τη νύχτα μετά των αζύμων και η επομένη ημέρα, το καθ’ ημάς Σάββατο, ελέγετο πρώτη των αζύμων, διότι ήτο η πρώτη και μετά αυτήν ήρχοντο και λοιπαί έξι ημέρες των αζύμων. Άλλωστε, εάν ο Κύριός μας τολμούσε να φάει την Πέμπτη το βράδυ Πάσχα με άζυμα, δεν χρειαζόταν τίποτα άλλο. Ήταν αρκετό, ως παραβάτης του Μωσαϊκού Νόμου, να λιθοβοληθεί. Δεν χρειάζονταν ψευδομάρτυρες ούτε άλλες κατηγορίες. Απόδειξις δε ότι ούτως έχει η υπόθεσις είναι αυτό που διαβάζουμε στον Ιωάννη, στο 18ο κεφάλαιο, στίχος 28. Τι λέγει εκεί;
