Summary
Great Lent leads Christians toward Christ’s Passion and Resurrection while calling them to examine whether their faith is sincere, correct, and faithful to the Church. God judges differently from human beings, as shown by Belshazzar’s condemnation, so every opinion, relationship, and action must be evaluated according to Christ rather than social approval. Peter’s confession that Jesus is the Christ and Son of the living God demonstrates that right faith is revealed by God and must be confirmed through an upright Christian life.

We are now in this great season called Great Lent, and with God’s help we are journeying toward Holy Week—that is, toward the sacred Passion of the Lord and His holy Resurrection.
The things we commemorate during these days are unique and unrepeatable, and they are matters that a person must understand correctly. Sincere faith alone is not enough for a person to be saved; one must also have the right faith.
I may take a road and sincerely believe that it will bring me where I want to go. But I have made a mistake. My sincerity cannot save me; I will not reach my destination. This is something that should concern us. It is like hearing the time announced on the radio and immediately looking at your watch to see whether it agrees with the exact time. If it does, all is well. If not, you set it back or move it slightly forward, so that...
the time will be accurate. You will do the same again tomorrow, and again after that, checking from time to time against the observatory’s official time, so that your watch remains accurate and you can conduct your affairs and keep your appointments. If you neglect this and keep a time of your own—not the city’s time, not the accurate time everyone else follows—there will be complete confusion. You will never arrive in time, never be punctual, and never do anything properly. It is much the same with matters of faith. Sadly, many of us are content with a faith made to our own measure. We fashion a faith of our own, one that suits us, does not correct us, and does not oppose...
our flesh, our fashions, our interests, or our appetite; and then we sleep peacefully, thinking that we are doing well. Given our weaknesses, what we believe may seem right because it suits us, but I do not know whether it truly benefits us in the end, when the time of reckoning comes. I do not know whether... This is why the Church, which watches over her children, insists year after year on bringing the same scenes before us and repeating the same themes, so that, by seeing them and reading the accounts, we may reconsider those things which, being human, we have not yet noticed, those things which, being human, we have not...
understood correctly. That is why I say that this is the most serious season in the Church. It calls us back and asks us at every moment: “Well, how are you doing? Are you walking on the right path?” This season sets many things before us, but above all it sets before us the question of right faith.
Right faith.
The question of right faith is one of the most serious questions in every matter, but especially in matters of salvation—things which, if a person does not learn them, and learn them correctly, it would have been better for him not to have been born. If you hold one opinion or another about some ordinary subject that...
makes no real difference one way or the other, then ultimately nothing comes of it and you lose nothing. But if you do not hold the right belief about matters on which you must be right—because if you lose your way in these things, I repeat, it would have been better for us not to have been born—then that is a serious matter.
A little earlier, while I was outside, I was searching through my bag, and a questionnaire came to light. It had been sent to me so that I could see how people think, especially the young. I would like to refer to it. It says that this was an anonymous survey conducted in three secondary schools: one vocational, one technical, and one general academic school. A total of 217 students took part. The first question was: “What is your relationship with your parents? Do you clash with them, and over what?” No one answered “excellent.” One hundred and forty-seven said that their relationship with their parents was “good,” forty said “fair,” and thirty said “poor.” What does that give us? Good relationships, 67.7 percent; fair, 18.4 percent; and poor, 13.8 percent. The second question concerns their teachers. “What is your relationship,” the survey asks...
“with your teachers? Do you clash with them, and over what?” Of the 217 students, 113 answered that their relationships were good, 67 that they were fair, and 8 that their relationships with their teachers were poor. That is, 52 percent good, 38 percent fair, and 3.6 percent poor. So far, the matter is not especially alarming. But the third question is the one on which I want to dwell. It asks: “What are Christ and the Church to you?” First, concerning Christ: Is He God...
Is He a higher power, or is He something else? Of the 217 students, 163 answered that Christ is God. In other words, 75 percent said that Christ is God. Twenty-two answered that Christ is a higher power, roughly 10 percent. Twenty said that He is nothing, while some gave no answer and expressed no opinion at all; this comes to 9.2 percent. Now, concerning the Church: only 29 of the 217 students, 13.3 percent, answered that they accept the Church.
Many had serious doubts about her. One hundred and fifty-six young people, 71.8 percent, did not accept her as she is, while twenty, 9.2 percent, rejected her entirely. The 156 question the Church or want her on their own terms, according to their own system. Twenty do not want her at all, and only 29 out of 217 are those who want her, take her seriously, and hold her in esteem. Here lies the issue. And yet on these children’s official papers, on their identity cards, it says, “Orthodox Christian.” Ask one of them and he will say: “I am not a Jew. I am not a Buddhist. I am not a Muslim. I am not this, I am not that. I am an Orthodox Christian.” But, but...
he does not want the Church. He believes in his own way, or wants the Church cut down to his own measure: not to correct him, to grant him permission, to abolish fasting for him, to tell him, “Fornication is permitted,” and all the rest. He wants his father to let him avoid work, even though the Church says, “If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.” I tell you this so that you may see how people around us—and within our own midst—think. This is the frightening thing: a person must hold the right belief about every matter. Sadly, we have not wanted to submit ourselves to this standard, this saving measure. The safe passage is narrow and clearly marked, if you wish to pass through without danger.
Let me give you an image that will help you understand this better. You know that because of the Occupation and the wars, most harbors had been mined, so that if a submarine tried to enter and torpedo one of our warships, or a ship carrying food and other supplies, it would be blown up and unable to enter. The mines remained for a long time even after peace had returned. Various minesweepers, crewed by men trained in such matters, opened safe channels. They removed the mines and cleared passages so that ships could enter the harbor. But other mines remained. Now a ship approaches from the open sea, not knowing where...
the safe passage is. A designated pilot boards it, guides it through the channel that has been cleared, and brings it safely to anchor. The ship unloads and loads its cargo, and then departs with God’s blessing. But what would happen if its captain said, “I know where I am going”? The ship would be blown up. No one dares to say, “I know which way to pass.” You do not know where to pass; the area is mined—and heavily mined! You remain anchored offshore and wait your turn for someone to bring you in and guide you through. Suppose you say, “I do not care,” even though there is a buoy on one side warning, “Beyond this point there is danger,” another buoy on the other side giving the same warning, and a beacon showing you, “Here is a rock; here is a reef.” If you insist on going your own way, you will be blown up.
Sadly, a person acts reasonably in such a situation: he protects himself and obeys the laws and the instructions—otherwise he will be blown up. Yet he does not do the same in matters concerning his soul or his faith. “I know better.” Nowadays a child of five or ten tells his mother, his father, or his teacher, “I know better.” He supposedly knows more than his teacher. As you understand, this is ridiculous. People today live according to that humorous saying: “The fox is a hundred years old, but her cub is a hundred and five.” The cub is older than its mother. How old are they? The fox is one hundred, and the cub is one hundred and five. That is what we are like today.
You understand how absurd this is. God does not want this. He does not want a person raising his head proudly and inventing new opinions and systems every day. The field is mined. The road to the Kingdom of Heaven is not easy. There is also an enemy. The enemy was already there in Paradise. Think of it: only two human beings—without malice, without thieves, without Marxists, without Freemasons, without atheists. There were only two people. And God told Adam to “tend and keep” the garden—to be watchful. If danger existed even in Paradise, and you saw how they fell into the trap, imagine what is happening today. How watchful we must be! You see it every day in your own neighborhood: new churches spring up, self-proclaimed saviors spring up, heretics spring up, and supposedly illuminated people spring up.
Imagine what is happening today! All these things are traps, and a person must beware of them and examine his faith to see whether he is truly walking on the right path. Most of us are called Orthodox only on paper. In our actual lives, however, we are not Orthodox. This is why people often point us to the lives of others who have no connection with Christ, with the Right Faith, or with the Gospel, and yet they are humane—truly humane, like angels. Meanwhile, we who have been given all this majesty and illumination often act like satans. So they hold such people up to us as examples and say to me: “Will the man who earns his bread, prepares it, and gives it to others really be lost?”
In answer to that question, it is not enough for a person simply to believe—or, I repeat, to believe in his own way. He must examine his life, examine his faith, and demonstrate his right faith through upright deeds. He says, “I am Orthodox.” What, then, do you do? What does “Orthodox” mean? It means that I glorify God rightly, think rightly, and believe rightly. That is what it means to be Orthodox. If we were now to conduct a survey like theirs, everyone would say that Christ is God; we would all acknowledge it. At least those of us whose papers and identity cards record us as Orthodox would acknowledge it. We would also confess that the Godhead is three-hypostatic—that God is the Holy Trinity of three Persons.
We will accept the dogmas summed up in our Creed: “I believe in one God; I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ; I believe in the Holy Spirit; I believe in the Ever-Virgin; I acknowledge one Baptism; I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the age to come.” When we read and proclaim these things, the Church cries out, “Let us stand aright; let us stand with fear.” Did you hear? Were you paying attention? Take care to preserve these things. For if you decide to pull out even one of these stakes—for dogma forms the stakes around the garden called faith—and begin removing them, saying, “I do not think the Most Holy Theotokos is a virgin; I do not think the Cross is an instrument of execution; I do not believe this; I do not believe that,” as some people say, then you have torn down the vineyard’s fence. Satan will enter through the opening, and everything will be lost. That is precisely what they are aiming for!
The Old Testament says that He “set a hedge around it.” Such words have a purpose. And then the warning light is not to blame; you are to blame for removing the light that told you, “Do not go any farther.” I believe a person must often examine his life, especially in matters of faith. What these children think about their father or their teacher, for example, whether right or wrong, is not what ultimately counts. But what follows—what they believe about the divinity of Jesus and the value of the Church—does count. There they must hold the right belief. Those 156 children in the survey who reject the Church in their own way, or want the Church only on their own terms, are unfortunate and uncatechized. They do not want her; they reject her of their own accord. That is the serious issue.
If we went out and conducted a similar survey ourselves, we would hear some strange things concerning our faith. Yesterday the Church spoke about Orthodoxy. She spoke about Orthodoxy at the beginning of Great Lent. The first Sunday of the Fast is called the Sunday of Orthodoxy. This is because our Church has passed through many difficult trials and has helped people—even at the cost of blood—by giving them the true standard by which to measure rightly. For you know that God does not measure as human beings do. He uses a different measure; He neither measures nor weighs as people do. I may give you a certificate and tell you to go to Paradise. But Christ will examine it
according to His own justice and His own teaching. He will see whether it agrees with His Gospel, with the blood He shed on Golgotha, and with the teaching of His Apostles, His Fathers, and the Church. If the certificate I issue agrees with these, then it will certainly be valid. But if it does not, He will reject it. For the most part—and I do not know, this is only a small conclusion I have drawn from my experience of life—I find that my thinking is always mistaken. I see it afterward. There were things I regarded as unquestionably true, things I would have signed with both hands and sealed with the palm of my hand, like Muhammad; yet afterward I saw that what I had been saying was foolish. That is why, when I speak with someone, I sometimes say, “My dear friend, I too had dreams when I was young: to become something, to accomplish something, to build something, and so forth.”
Dreams! A hundred and five of them were shipwrecked—not a hundred, but a hundred and five. They were all foolish. Everything turned out crooked; everything came out the opposite way. And yet that was how I saw things, and those above me saw them the same way and perhaps even applauded me. All of it proved foolish—very foolish indeed. A person ought to be afraid. Very well, this is how I speak and how I see the matter concerning my daughter—but how does Christ see it? This is how I see the matter concerning my wife, my husband, my child, or my dealings with others. I may see all these things in a certain way, but how does Christ see the whole matter?
When Saint Kosmas of Aetolia went out to preach to our people, every morning, before they set out from the place where they had stayed and rested during the night, he would turn toward the East and say, “Lord...”
“What lies ahead of us today?” That was his prayer.
“Go before us today as well.” Today, however, we put Christ behind us. We put the Most Holy Theotokos behind us. We put His Saints behind us. We also put behind us the people whose names we invoke—whether we call them Katina, Katerini, Dimitris, Yiannis, or Nikolas—and we shout at them as though they were our servants: “Come on, my Most Holy Theotokos, help us! Come and help us!” She has stopped listening. “Yes, sir?” “Most Holy Theotokos, go away now. I am going to sew, receive guests, do this or that, eat, make something, have children, and so forth. Go away, Lady Theotokos; there is no work for you here. I will call you when I need you.” When a person thinks and lives in this way, you understand—Amen, I tell you—how foolish and ridiculous he is.
When you read the Book of Daniel, you will see that when Darius the Persian
was besieging Babylon, Belshazzar, the son of Nebuchadnezzar and the king, was feasting inside and drinking wine before a thousand concubines and nobles. When the wine had put them in high spirits, he brought out the sacred vessels that had been taken from the Temple in Jerusalem when the people were carried captive into Babylon. In their drunken revelry, they poured wine into those sacred vessels, drank from them, and laughed. At that very moment, Holy Scripture says, a hand appeared—as I have told you before—and began writing upon the plaster. No one knew what it was writing or who was writing it.
When they saw the hand writing, and Belshazzar realized what was happening, his knees gave way. His face changed, and his legs began trembling like drumsticks. Everyone froze; they swallowed their tongues. At that critical moment the queen arrived, for she had been absent. “What has happened?” She found a king she could scarcely recognize. “O king, live forever!” she said. But how could the king live? How could he live, when this writing was there before him? They summoned scholars, philosophers, and the Chaldeans. All human knowledge and wisdom passed before it, but no one could answer. Then the queen remembered that Daniel was in prison, a young man of the Hebrews who had interpreted the dreams of the king’s father.
They summoned Daniel, and when he came they said, “We will give you a golden chain if you interpret this for us.” He replied, “Keep the chain for yourself. The interpretation is not mine; it comes from God.” And the writing said: “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin.” “O king, God has numbered your kingdom and found it wanting, and tonight He is taking your kingdom away from you. God has weighed your kingdom, and it has proved deficient; tonight He is cutting it off. This is the end.” Outside, Darius the Persian was besieging the city, but Babylon was fortified, and there were enough provisions inside to last for years.
“Let him wear himself out,” Belshazzar was saying in his own way. “We will go on feasting.” But what had Darius done? The Euphrates River flowed through Babylon. He dug two channels, one on either side, diverted the water outside the city, and his men entered through the riverbed. That very night they slaughtered Belshazzar like a goat. The people had praised and applauded him, and he had become intoxicated by their applause: “O king, live forever!” Yes, live forever, O king—but the One above measures differently and weighs differently. How, then, will Christ measure our deeds up to this day—our indifference, our unbelief, and our whole manner of life? How will He weigh them? With what scales will Christ weigh them?
A person must pay attention to Holy Scripture, to the hymnography of the Church—which reminds him of many things, especially during these days—and also to the sacred iconography of the Church. He has much to learn from them. In churches adorned with Orthodox iconography, painted through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, when a person is about to leave for the city, he sees the Last Judgment above the door in the narthex. It says to him: “You are going out into the world, O man. Take care, because one day you will come here. Take care over your life; take care over your deeds.” Have you paid attention to what this image of the Last Judgment contains? At the very top is our Christ, seated. On His right is the Most Holy Theotokos, His Mother,
and on His left is the Honorable Forerunner. In front is a throne prepared for Christ, who will come and sit upon it to judge the world. He has not yet taken His seat; the throne remains empty. Before the throne lies the open Gospel, and from beneath the Gospel hangs a cord with a pair of scales. The demons come and place their accusations concerning the souls on one side, and the angels come and place their testimony on the other. But the scales hang from the Gospel. They do not hang from your mother-in-law, who hands you an indulgence for every kind of offense. They do not hang from the wife whose wishes you indulge and to whom you grant an indulgence in return, nor from your father, your friend, or the girlfriend with whom you eat and watch things, each one excusing the other.
One says to the other, “O king, live forever,” as we said earlier. There was a couple who had committed many sins, as I mentioned before, and the young man went to Holy Confession here in Athens. The young woman, however, was in a village and could not go to Holy Confession.
“Let her receive Holy Communion,” the spiritual father said, “and I will forgive her from here. You confess on her behalf how much you admit to and how much the two of you sinned together.” And so the young woman went and began receiving Holy Communion. In the meantime they married, the matter was considered closed, and they continued with their life. Yet the young woman, now a married lady, could find no peace. Within her, her conscience cried out and told her that she was sinful, reminding her of her life before Holy Matrimony. Two years passed.
The matter came to my attention during a discussion. I said, “This young woman will never find peace, because she has God within her—her conscience, the voice of God—which reminds her to settle her account and go to Holy Confession for those sins. They remain unconfessed.” Naturally, there was some resistance. But the right judgment prevailed, and she went to Holy Confession. She received a two-year canon of penance. From that moment on, however, she was at peace. Her conscience stopped crying out. You cannot escape anyone, then. Even if for a moment you cast God outside,
your conscience will always remind you. It will cry out that what you have done is not right. You have what we might call a nightmare, but it is a saving nightmare. Conscience is the red warning light. You have seen many people stop suddenly because a red light came on in their car. The engine has overheated; perhaps it lacks oil or water, or something else is wrong. If you continue, you will burn out the engine. The light warns you that something is wrong. Conscience works in the same way. When your conscience cries out to you over even the smallest matter—whether food, the flesh, your dealings with others, or fashion—do not look for some way to silence it. If you wish to walk rightly, with right faith and right conduct, you must follow the voice of conscience. My dear friends, if we are honest, how seldom does our conscience
give us a green light! Most of the time it is entirely red. Yet we push it aside, remain indifferent, and continue through the red light. You understand what the result will be when we fall into the hands of God’s constable, death. Then we shall see. Until now you may have got away with things, paid your fines, and done whatever you wished. But when death catches you—and it will catch us; none of us will escape, for we must all pass that way—then matters will be different. So, as I have said, it is not enough for a person to believe however he wishes; he must also believe rightly. When our Christ was upon the earth, He once had a conversation with His disciples. Surely these things were also being discussed among the wider public. The disciples went farther afield; they passed through the marketplace and perhaps even the coffeehouse—I do not know where else.
One day He put a question to them. He said, “You who go out among the people, can you tell Me who these people think I am? Who do they take Me for? How do they imagine Me? Who am I?” So they began to give their opinions. If you wish to find this passage, you will find it in the sixteenth chapter of Matthew. Some said, “We hear people saying that You are the Prophet Jeremiah.” Others said that He was the Prophet Elijah. Others said that He was the honorable Forerunner, John the Forerunner and Baptist. Still others said that He was one of the prophets. What a variety of opinions! As many heads as there are, so many opinions. Very well, that is what the world says. “But you—
who do you say that I, the Son of Man, am? Who do you take Me for?” He asked. Then Peter, simple and pure of heart, sprang forward and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Not merely the son of some god, but of the living God. He distinguished between the many gods and the one true and living God. Nor did he mean one living god among many living gods—no, but the one God. “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” You have the exact words; calmly open your Scriptures, if you wish, and read what I am telling you. When Christ heard what Peter had said, He turned to him and said, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah.” “I call you blessed, Simon—
son of Jonah—because you are blessed, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you.” You did not say this on your own; it was not merely your tongue that spoke. God said it—My Father said it. He has spoken through you now and given the true definition of who I am. I am not some god, nor merely an exalted man, nor a reformer, nor some teacher or anything else. I am the Son of the living God, the Christ. And He called Peter blessed and changed his name there and then. He said to him, “From now on, because of what you have said, you will no longer be called Simon, which means unstable. You will be called Cephas, which means Peter, firm and steadfast; and upon this rock”—that is, upon the confession—
“‘I am the Son of the living God,’ I will build My Church.” There are many opinions in the world today as well. Even today people speak of Christ as “a higher power.” That is how the young people here acknowledge Him: as a higher power. Another calls Him a higher being. Another accepts Him, as I said earlier, as a reformer, a mystic, a prophet, or who knows what else. He is none of these things. A person must have the right faith concerning Christ, exactly as God spoke through the mouth of Peter. We must hold the right belief, believe correctly, and remain firmly attached to it. We must also put that faith into action and demonstrate our right faith through our works, as James says.
Let us also pay attention to what the angel declared before Christ’s tomb on the very day of the Resurrection. When the Myrrh-bearing Women went there, as you remember, they found an angel before the tomb who had rolled away the stone. This was what had troubled them: who would roll away the great stone for them, weak women as they were, so that they could anoint Christ? But the Angel was already there and had delivered them from that difficulty beforehand. He asked them, “Whom do you seek here? Jesus the crucified, the Nazarene? He is not here.” He did not say simply “Jesus,” but “Jesus the crucified,” because there had been others named Jesus: Joshua the son of Nun, Justus, and others besides. But there is only one crucified Jesus.
“You seek Jesus, then,” he said, “the crucified, the Nazarene,” the One from Nazareth. “He is not here; He is risen.” This is the One whom a person must always keep in his nous, his spiritual mind, asking himself, “Do I truly believe correctly?” Do you know what “I believe” means in simple language? It means, “I surrender myself.” To say “I believe” means that I raise my hands and surrender. It does not mean, “I know”; it means, “I believe.” Knowledge is not rewarded by Christ; faith is. That is why He did not call Thomas blessed when Thomas cried out, “My Lord and my God!” But when did you discover this, Thomas? When you put your finger into the place of the nails.
What else could you have said then? Could you possibly have said anything different? What else was there to say? But I wanted you to say it before you saw Me. That is precisely what He told him: “Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” They laid aside their ego, because faith presupposes laying aside the ego, one’s knowledge, education, and so forth. True faith is the faith of the shepherds and of the Magi, those wise men who worshiped a little Child as God, worshiped Him as King, and worshiped Him as the sacrificial Victim. These are people who walk by faith. True faith is also the faith of the thief on the right, who said to Him, “Remember me, Lord.” Where do you see His lordship? They crucified Him, and they crucified you as well. “When You come into Your Kingdom.” Where do you see a kingdom? Here there is only the Cross, and we are dying.
What did your eyes find that allows you to see what lies beyond? Faith sees beyond what is visible. I believe; I do not know, but I believe. That is what receives its reward. Some people demand pencil and paper: How will I make ends meet? How will I pay the governess? How will my child learn English? How will I buy him a piano, a car, and this or that? Ah, they want figures, guarantees, and money in the bank before they have a second child, a third child, or even their first child. They do not walk by faith. They do not even draw upon their own lives and remember that they themselves came from families of eight, ten, nine, or fifteen children, and yet they lived. Let them work so that they can live; why should they not work? They disregard all this and demand certainty. “You expect me to accept that? How? Will the figures add up? Here are the pencil and paper.” Then you hear someone say, “So, were you raised by pencil and paper? How did you grow up?” Faith is a great thing.
It is not enough, then, I say, for a person to believe in his own way. He must believe correctly, as one should believe in the person to whom one entrusts oneself. There are many discussions about these matters, especially among our educated people and, more particularly, among educated young people. The young want to cast off Christ, the Church, and the Gospel so that they may be free to indulge the flesh. They regard this as progress; they think this is everything. They want to be free people who can do whatever they wish. But this is not right. So they reject Christ and reject the Gospel. They push them aside, removing all the “do nots” and “you shall nots” from the warning signs. They turn them into “yes” and “it is permitted,” and continue down the road. Of course, they will eventually come face to face with the justice of God. But then they approach the matter from another angle.
They begin speaking about the rest of the world: “What will happen to those who never came to know?” and so forth. Those people also believe sincerely, they say; they too believe in their own god. The Buddhist believes in Buddha, the Confucian in Confucius, another in Zoroaster, the Muslim in Muhammad, the Papist in the Pope, the Protestant in Calvin, the Millenarian in Russell, and so on. Why should my faith be right and his faith not be right as well? Do you not consider that egotistical? That is more or less how everyone sees it. Yes, it may seem that this should be the case. And yet it is not. For although we place our trust in faith, we also possess knowledge. Let me give you something decisive, something you can hold in your hand, so that you will know how to answer.
Summon all the religions of the world, together with their leaders and followers, and ask them to present us with a single Saint. There are millions upon millions of people: millions of Papists, millions of Arabs, millions of Ishmaelites, millions of Buddhists, and millions of others. Let them present us with one Saint, one holy relic. Let them bring us just one, and we will break ours into a thousand pieces. They have none. What greater proof do you want? What greater proof do you want? Just the other day we exhumed a Saint who had been buried for twenty-six years, and he was as though he had just been laid in the grave.
Let all the religions of the world gather together, with all their religious leaders, and present us with one Saint. Not one can do so. And the Saints whom the Papists have are from before the schism, before they departed from Orthodoxy in 1054.
They took them from Orthodoxy, just as they took Titus, Ignatius, Saint Andrew, and Saint Sabbas the Sanctified. Where are they returning them to us now? Does this not make an impression on you? Have you never stopped to think and consider it? If you wish, look into the matter for yourselves. There is evidence.
How many years did they keep Saint Sabbas the Sanctified? A hundred years in Italy. He appeared to the former Pope, John XXIII, and said to him, “Send me home, or I will bring great harm upon you.” The Pope’s knees gave way, and he notified the late Benedict, his predecessor. A delegation was sent, and they received the Saint. When they went to remove the papal garments and caps that had been placed on him and clothe him in Orthodox vestments to bring him here, he raised his arms by himself so they could put on his tunic and garments. Did you know this? I am telling you. So what can anyone say to me? What will become of the little Papists, the little Muslims, and all the rest? Am I to be more compassionate than Christ, the Lover of mankind? He knows what will happen to them, and He knows why they persist. Does a Papist not know where the truth is?
Do not millions of them see the light of the Resurrection that comes forth for the Orthodox every Great and Holy Saturday? Do you know that the Catholics do not celebrate Pascha as their principal feast, because they have transferred that prominence to Christmas? Do you know this? They are there at the All-Holy Sepulchre; they have slaughtered people of ours and seized places, yet they do not participate in the Resurrection. For many years now, every four years the Catholic and Orthodox dates of Pascha have coincided, yet they do not receive the light of our Resurrection. The Armenians receive it, the Abyssinians receive it, and the Copts receive it. They all receive it from our Patriarch, because Christ gives the light only to him. The Catholics do not receive it. We light their lamps for them. Does this require philosophical argument? Does Christ have something personal against them? No, He does not. Did they possess the relic of Saint Nicholas, or did they not? They did.
The relic was in Bari, Italy. But then it disappeared. What happened? They sold it to the Russians. Why did they sell it? Because when the popes rebelled against Orthodoxy, put the cross upon their slipper, declared themselves infallible and, who knows what else, representatives of God, and drove God from the earth, Saint Nicholas ceased to pour forth myrrh from his holy foot whenever the service was celebrated by a Papist priest. After the schism, whenever a Papist priest served in the church, the Saint’s foot did not pour forth myrrh. When an Orthodox priest served, it did. They sold the relic, and the Russians have it. Does this require philosophical argument? We have five holy relics forming a dividing line from Corfu southward, separating East from West.
Does this mean nothing? Does it tell us nothing? Saint Spyridon and Saint Theodora the Empress—two holy relics in Corfu; Saint Gerasimos in Kefalonia; Saint Dionysios and Saint Symeon in Zakynthos—in the village of Gaitani there is a second holy relic. Five holy relics. Do these things say nothing? What further testimony do you want? You ask one of our priests to bless water, and that water never spoils. What further testimony do you want? Gather all the cardinals in the world, all the leaders of the millions of Protestants, all their religious ministers, and everyone else—I do not know how else to put it. Could they produce even a single drop of water for us that would not spoil? The water blessed by our priests remains incorrupt.
We have the blessing of water in our home that is many years old. Four years ago, in Brachami, foundations were dug for a new house. Beneath the old foundations they found a little bottle of blessed water at each of the four corners. The house had been there for one hundred and twenty years, and the water was perfectly clear. The owner opened one of the bottles and drank it—after one hundred and twenty years. That too requires no philosophical argument. And what will become of those other people? I do not know. Christ speaks here. I do not know what will become of them. I know what will become of me if I do not believe correctly. We have evidence. Tell me, which religion is blasphemed by the devil? None of them. Have you ever heard anyone blaspheme Muhammad? They do not. But they all blaspheme the Most Holy Theotokos.
Or Buddha? Have you ever heard anyone blaspheme him? Never. But they blaspheme Christ, the Cross, and God. Does the devil not know where the true value lies? Those other things may appear right, but they are false at their very root. Besides this, I have said before that we are now speaking about how we can draw strength from the assurance that we are walking on the right path. They all lay claim to people as their own: the popes claim theirs, Muhammad his, Buddha his, Confucius his, Russell his, and so forth. But will they raise us from the dead? Then I want the Ascension, the Annunciation—
the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come. If I am not going to rise from the dead and live beyond the grave, then I might as well lose my mind now. There is no reason for me to live and waste my time. I may as well find rest an hour sooner. Can any one of those leaders guarantee that he will raise me from the dead? That is the question. When our ancestors heard Paul preach about the Resurrection at the Pnyx here in Athens, as we read in the seventeenth chapter of Acts, they began to laugh and ended the discussion. When he spoke about the Resurrection, it seemed to them...
They thought it absurd that we would rise again, that there is a Resurrection, and that we proclaim, “Christ is risen.” “Leave it,” they said. “We will discuss these things another day.” The matter of the Resurrection seemed to them utterly absurd, sheer nonsense. And many of us Orthodox Christians also reject the Resurrection. “Come now, my poor fellow, who has ever come back from there? These are things the priests say so they can collect money.” And then you go on living here in torment, sleeping outside in a tent because of fear and all the rest. Why endure all that? Why not throw away your sanity and be done with it? That is how it is. No founder of any religion can guarantee us life beyond the grave. Only Christ—Jesus the Crucified, the Nazarene, the Son of God—can do so. And He proves it by His tomb, the only tomb that is empty...
The tomb of Jesus. Every other tomb, the tomb of every other religious founder, is occupied. Buddha lies there; Muhammad lies there; Confucius lies there; the pope lies there; Russell lies there; Calvin lies there; Luther lies there—all of them remain bound to the earth. Only Christ has an empty tomb, together with His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos: the Author of life and the Mother of Life, who was translated into life. It was impossible for the tomb to hold her. It is in them that we believe—if indeed we believe and live rightly. In them we believe. “And I will raise him up at the last day.” Can the others do that? Let them show us the tomb of their founder. If he himself did not rise, how could he possibly raise me? How could he raise me if he himself did not rise? That is the heart of the matter. What a great blessing it is, my beloved, that we were born Orthodox. And what an eternal blessing it will be...
If we take heed and conduct our lives accordingly. Right faith and right practice. You cannot be faithful if you do not live rightly. “I believe in Christ, but I steal. I believe in Christ, but I also blaspheme Christ—both Him and His Mother. I believe in Christ, but as for children, no, keep them away. I believe in Christ, but fasting—no.” Do you know that during these days people in the tents, even under such fear, were grilling steaks? Did you know that? They were grilling steaks, holding their child in their arms and feeding it souvlaki during the first week of Great Lent. Yet if a doctor told them to live on rice water for a month, they would do it. Where is the faith? Where is it? It therefore depends on us.
This is what the Church permits, and events are now at the door that point us in the right direction. What are we doing in the face of all this? How are we living during these days? Are we fasting spiritually and bodily? Have husband and wife separated their beds? What is cooking in our pot? What food are we preparing? Do we give to the poor what we save through fasting? Do we attend the Church’s services? Christ came to take away our sins. Have we given them to Him? Have we repented with metanoia? Have we confessed? Have we loved one another? Have we forgiven one another, so that we may enter this season, which prepares us, leads us to Golgotha, and brings us through into the Resurrection? These are necessary reflections for anyone who wishes to say that he believes rightly, so that he may inherit the Kingdom...
Of Heaven, because both right faith and right practice are necessary. Not every road leads to Rome; a particular and true faith is needed. So, if you have not paid attention to these things, attend to them now and reconsider your life. Let no one approach the Cross burdened with sins—no one. There must be a change of life, a change in the way we live. And you see, especially with these recent threats, that in a fraction of a second we may cease to exist. Therefore, together with you, I pray to Christ: may He who has brought us into these most sacred days help us to live rightly, so that we may be edified and receive His blessing.

Όνειρα, τα εκατόν πέντε ναυάγησαν. Όχι τα εκατό, εκατόν πέντε ναυάγησαν. Όλα αστεία ήταν, όλα στραβά ήρθαν, όλα ανάποδα ήρθαν. Αδιαφόρως, έτσι τα έβλεπα εγώ και έτσι τα έβλεπαν και οι υπεράνω εμού και ίσως και με χειροκροτούσαν. Πέρασαν τα αστεία, πολύ αστεία. Να φοβάται ο άνθρωπος. Καλά, εγώ το λέω έτσι. Εγώ το βλέπω έτσι το θέμα της κόρης μου· ο Χριστός πώς το βλέπει; Εγώ το βλέπω έτσι το θέμα της γυναικός μου, του ανδρός μου, του παιδιού μου, στη συναλλαγή μου· εγώ τα βλέπω έτσι, ο Χριστός πώς τα βλέπει, σ' όλο το θέμα;
«Και ας χτυπιέται», έλεγε ο Βαλτάσσαρ με τον τρόπο του, «και εμείς θα πάμε να γλεντήσουμε». Τι είχε κάνει ο Δαρείος; Μέσα από τη Βαβυλώνα περνά ο Ευφράτης ποταμός. Άνοιξε δύο αυλάκια, ένα από εδώ και ένα από εκεί, διοχέτευσε το νερό έξω της πόλεως και μέσα από την κοίτη εκεί μπήκανε μέσα και τον έσφαξαν σαν κατσίκι το βράδυ εκείνο. Λέγανε οι άνθρωποι, τον χειροκροτούσαν οι άνθρωποι. Αυτός να τρελαθεί που ο κόσμος τον χειροκροτεί. «Ζήθι, βασιλεύ!» Ναι, ζήθι, βασιλεύ, αλλά ο επάνω όμως μετράει αλλιώς και ζυγίζει αλλιώς. Πώς θα μετρήσει, λοιπόν, ο Χριστός τα έργα μας μέχρι σήμερα, την αδιαφορία μας, την απιστία μας και γενικά την πολιτεία μας; Πώς θα ζυγίσει; Με τι ζυγαριά θα ζυγίσει ο Χριστός;
Ο Άγιος Σάββας ο Ηγιασμένος, τον είχανε πόσα χρόνια; Εκατό χρόνια στην Ιταλία. Στον προηγούμενο Πάπα, τον Ιωάννη τον 23ο, και του λέει: «Στείλε με στο σπίτι μου, γιατί θα σου κάνω μεγάλο κακό». Λυθήκανε τα γόνατά του και ειδοποίησε τον μακαρίτη, τον Βενέδικτο, τον πρό... Και έστειλε επιτροπή από κάτω και τον πήρανε τον Άγιο. Και όταν πήγανε να του βγάλουν τα παπικά αυτά ρούχα και λοιπά, τους σκούφους που του είχαν βάλει, να του βάλουν ορθόδοξα για να τον φέρουν εδώ, σήκωσε μόνος του τα χέρια για να του βάλουν το σακάκι και να του βάλουν τα ρούχα. Το ξέρετε αυτό; Σας το λέγω εγώ. Τι θα μου μιλήσει εμένα; Τι θα γίνουν τα παπάκια και τι θα γίνουν τα μεμετάκια και τι θα γίνουνε Κυλοπόνες ανατακάμω; Θα γίνω φιλανθρωπότερος του φιλανθρώπου, του Χριστού; Αυτός ξέρει τι θα γίνουν και ξέρει γιατί επιμένουν. Δεν ξέρει η παπική ποια είναι η αλήθεια;
