Summary
The apolytikion presents Saint Nicholas through three essential Christian qualities: true faith, meekness, and self-control. The lecture argues that love for people does not require agreement with every doctrine and strongly warns against compromising Orthodox teaching in ecumenical union. The Christian life should visibly bear good fruit, revealing Christ through conduct, speech, family life, forgiveness, patience, and willingness to suffer injustice without retaliation.

Let me speak, then, on this occasion about Saint Nicholas. The Church usually sums up the life and teaching of a Saint in the apolytikion and the kontakion. There, in brief, one finds the Saint’s life and teaching. The apolytikion of Saint Nicholas, as most of us will know, says: “The truth of your deeds revealed you to your flock as a rule of faith, an image of meekness, and a teacher of self-control.”
It begins by presenting him through three qualities. It presents him as a rule of faith, a teacher of self-control, and a man of meekness. These are essential marks of the Christian. If we examine ourselves, we may find that we do not possess them—or, if we do, we do not possess them as we should. I do not know whether you have ever considered what we mean when we speak of faith. Faith. I believe.
One person believes, another believes, and everyone believes. But what do they believe? That is the question concerning faith: what they believe, what I believe, and how I believe. Today there is no one who does not believe. Even idolaters believe. They believe in snakes, in the sun, in the sea—they believe. And today, throughout the world, amid so many different forms of religion, people believe. But how do they believe? The way a person believes is a serious matter. One must believe rightly. There must be a measure by which faith is judged and its genuineness established.
Our Lord Jesus Christ gives us this faith: right faith, the faith that saves, saving faith. As you wander through the world around you, you will encounter many kinds of belief. You ask someone, “Do you believe?” “Of course I believe.” “What do you believe in?” “I believe in God.” You ask another, “Do you believe?” “Of course I do.” “What do you believe?” “I believe in a higher power.” You go on to someone else: “Do you believe?” “Of course I believe.” “What do you believe?” “I believe in a higher being.” Another person believes in Christ, for example. Very well—but what do you believe Christ to be? An intelligent man, a reformer, a noble man? And what does someone else believe?
You see? As many people as there are, so many kinds of belief. But among all these beliefs, who possesses the true one? Do all these roads lead to Heaven? Once Christ asked His disciples—I do not know whether you remember this—“Who do people say that I am?” He said to them, “As you go about among the people in the marketplace...”
“You meet people and hear many things being said about My name. Who do people think I am? What do they call Me?” Each disciple reported the opinions he had heard while moving among the people: “Some say that You are John the Forerunner. Others say that You are one of the prophets. Others say that You are the Prophet Elijah.”
There were various opinions, based on what they had heard people saying. “Very well,” He said, “but who do you say that I am?” Then Peter spoke up and said, “You are Christ, the Son of the living God.” For this answer, for this confession, our Lord bestowed upon him a blessing: “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah.” “You are blessed, Simon, son of Jonah,” He tells him, “for flesh and blood did not reveal to you what you have said”—which is the truth—“that I am neither Elijah, nor merely a prophet, nor the Forerunner, nor one of the prophets, but Christ, the Son of God, the Son of the living God. You are blessed, because these words did not come from you alone.”
“My Father in Heaven spoke them through you. He simply used your tongue to give the definition of right faith concerning My person.” From this it is clear that believing in one’s own way does not save. A ship’s captain, for example, may believe that he is sailing on the right course. Yet if he has made a mistake and is not on the right course, his belief will not save him; he will strike a reef. He will not reach his destination. He believed that he was sailing properly, that he was on the right course, and that his compass was accurate. But he had made some mistake, with the result that no one reached the destination and they all sank to the bottom. Therefore, it is not enough simply for a person to believe.
What matters is whether a person believes rightly. We set our watches running, of course. Yet when we hear the official time announced by the observatory, we all look at our watches. Are they keeping pace? Are they properly synchronized? Or will I buy a ticket for a two o’clock journey and arrive at the station at three because my watch is wrong? Or will I arrive an hour early and freeze in the cold because my watch is wrong? We always take care to synchronize it, to keep it accurate according to the time that governs the whole world. Everyone seeks to be synchronized—to use the right word here—to conform to the common time, so that our dealings with one another may be harmonious.
Then I know when I am to travel, I know when to expect you, and you know when I will arrive. So I correct my watch. If it is a little slow, I set it exactly; if it is a little fast, I set it exactly. I check it from time to time. But what does a person do concerning faith? We are human and can go wrong. If there is any error in your faith, then you do not believe rightly. I would like you to tell me: since we call ourselves Orthodox, what can assure us that we are on the right path and following the right way? Today, as you yourselves know, there is confusion concerning faith. You see and hear how many matters of faith are discussed as casually as though we were talking about something worth a few coins—
a box of matches, a lollipop, or a piece of candy. Yet the God-Man died for these things. Blood was shed—rivers of blood—and millions became martyrs for this faith, while we deal with it casually and thoughtlessly: “I believe, they believe, and the others believe too.” Yes, but what do they believe? Faith must be one. There are not many kinds of true faith. Faith is one; right faith is one. Who possesses it, and what are the marks of this right faith? Saint Nicholas is called “a rule of faith.” A rule: do you know what a rule is? It is a ruler, the instrument we use to measure so that we lose nothing in the distances and proportions. That is called a rule. It is what craftsmen use and what we used at school.
We had our rulers, and if we tried to draw a triangle, we used them to make it exact, to draw whatever was required. We received a good mark if we kept the distances and proportions correctly. Can I simply draw whatever I please—distorted shapes made in my own way? No: there is a rule of faith. Therefore, every person must be concerned with whether he truly believes rightly and is walking on the path he ought to follow, because not every road leads to Heaven. When a person charts his own road, he must understand that he will not reach the appointed destination. For Christ marked out the true road, and He alone knew it...
He alone is the expert, because He came by this road, returned by it, and now awaits us. None of the others, the so-called founders of religions, has done this. They came into this world through their mothers and fathers, and they remained here. Their tombs still contain them. Go to the founders of all the religions, and you will find them in their tombs. Only the tomb of Jesus Christ is empty. He returned to the place from which He came. He travelled this road in both directions; therefore He knows it, and He has left a way for everyone to follow, if they so desire. What I am telling you is therefore of great importance, because not every manner of believing is sufficient to save a person and enable him to return. For the purpose of human life is that man should return to the place from which he departed.
As I told you, not every road leads back; not every road can bring a person to the place from which he departed. If, then, we were to examine whether we believe rightly, we would find that most of us do not. It is further shown that we lack right belief because right practice is also absent from it. Right belief is demonstrated by right practice. It is not enough merely to utter empty words: “I believe.” The one who believes more accurately than all people—even more accurately than the Saints—concerning the divinity of Jesus and the other doctrines is Satan. Satan believes and trembles; but he does not act accordingly. He has chosen not to obey.
Satan is a spirit, and he knows these doctrinal matters better than anyone, but he does not put them into practice; he does not obey. Go and ask him whatever you wish, and he knows it. Did he not say to Christ, “What have You to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?” Did he not say this? Did he not acknowledge Him as God? And what came of it? Did anything come of it? Nothing came of it, because he does not act accordingly. Our own life is entirely unbelieving; it bears no evidence of faith. I do this because I believe in Christ and His teaching. I fast during these days because I believe. I accept as many children as God gives me because I believe in Him who will judge me tomorrow. I do not steal because I believe.
I do not lie because I believe. I do not live according to the ways of the world because I believe in Christ. I attend the services of the Church because I believe. I pray because I believe. Do you understand? If my life does not demonstrate my right faith, then even if I say, “I believe; Christ is God,” and so forth, my actions prove the exact opposite. There are people whose homes are filled with icons, yet they have no children—or, if they do, they have only one. The rest they cast away. What does that show? Are they faithful simply because they have icons?
This, then, is a serious matter. Especially in these days, there has been much commotion concerning the union of our Church and similar questions. People repeat the same phrases as if they were sucking on lollipops: “Are we not all one? Do they not also believe in Christ? Are they not Christians? Are we not Christians? Will we be saved while they will not?” Why are you telling me this? Say it to the One who was crucified. Why tell me? Nothing is being taken away from me personally. When Christ sent out invitations to mankind, He did not issue them as we do when we baptize our child or marry our daughter—sending a certain number of invitations to selected people. He has issued an invitation to the whole world, and He calls the whole world, regardless of doctrine, color, or race.
Regardless of knowledge, He calls everyone—provided that they act and conform themselves to what He says. That is the point. Consequently, there is room for every human being. Nothing is taken from me if I am admitted and saved together with the whole rest of the world. What do I lose? Everyone has his own place in the Kingdom of Heaven. It is very wrong to look at someone and say, “No, not that man inside.” Why not? Let him enter. But is this the road? Does Christ show that He accepts this road? Are there many roads leading to the Kingdom, or is there one road? That is the question. Then someone says, “You do not love.” I do love. I simply do not agree. Loving someone and agreeing with him are two different things.
I love him because he is a human being, created in the image and likeness of God. I love him because my Christ sacrificed Himself for him; he belongs to God. But I do not agree with him. These are two different things. Because I love you, must I deny my faith? Is that what love requires? Love is not merely a sentiment; one kind of love differs from another. How do you explain that at the All-Holy Sepulchre Christ gives the light of the Resurrection only to the Orthodox and to no one else? How are we to interpret this? How does He tell you, “Here is the truth”? Since only the Orthodox blessing of water remains incorrupt, while no other does, how are we to interpret this? Will they presume to advise God about this as well? Who has the authority to advise God?
God tells you: “Here!”
We began with Saint Nicholas and his faith, did we not? You know that Saint Nicholas was taken from Myra in Lycia to Bari in Italy. You have read about these things; you do read them.
The first Divine Liturgy, let us say, was celebrated there. Fragrant myrrh flowed from his feet, and later the clergy prolonged the Divine Liturgy as much as they could so that they might collect more of it. They gathered cauldrons full of myrrh. But when the Papacy separated itself and introduced papal primacy, papal infallibility, and the rest—when they went their own way—the myrrh ceased to flow whenever a papal priest served. So they sold Saint Nicholas to Russia. He is not in Rome, at the Vatican, where they have a cenotaph and claim that it belongs to Saint Nicholas. They sold the relic to Russia, because after the schism it ceased to give forth myrrh.
Saint Nicholas gives forth myrrh. Are they going to correct him as well? These are not trivial matters; they are serious matters. And it will be sorrowful—most sorrowful—if we are sold out this time. For they say it is a matter of love. What did you say? Let us turn to these things. What happened when...? We have countless examples. If I remember correctly, this is the fifteenth time such an attempt has been made. And it is not an attempt motivated by love. It is an attempt to enslave Orthodoxy. The Papacy will surrender none of its beliefs. Nothing. Not even a hair’s breadth.
It will not surrender even a hair’s breadth of what it believes. Do not listen to what they say on television and so forth. Certain interests are behind it. They are working toward the sellout. They want the thorn removed from their eye; they want Orthodoxy out of their sight. That is the reason. If people are found in the middle who resist this sellout, we shall suffer calamities again. We shall find ourselves facing another schism here, just as we already have the Old Calendarist schism. For certainly not all the bishops will follow. If one, two, or five follow—and I do not believe that any will, but let us suppose that one, two, or five do—the rest will not follow, nor will the people.
Day after day, certain interests brainwash the people through the various media and newspapers under their control. But afterward the people will be enlightened and will resist. May we have the strength to do so. Of course, all these things are happening because of our sins. Faith, then, is the most serious matter of all. This is why, when speaking dogmatically about Saint Nicholas, our Church calls him a “rule of faith.” On what basis does the Church say this? Do you know what supports it? His striking of Arius at the First Ecumenical Council. Saint Nicholas was one of the Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council, which was convened by Constantine the Great and consisted, as you know, of 318 Fathers, in order to pronounce upon...
the divinity of Jesus: whether Christ is God, and whether the Three are One and the One is Three—that is, whether Christ is a member of the Holy Trinity, whether He is God. The leader of the opposing party was Arius, formerly an Orthodox priest. But later, deceived through pride, he became an enemy of the true faith and took the opposing side. As a result, miracles occurred there—four miracles at the First Ecumenical Council—showing that the Holy Spirit was present and that the decisions they made were divine, not human. And Saint Nicholas, being human, although he was meek—as the hymn goes on to call him, “an image of meekness”...
did not restrain himself, but struck Arius. He rose in the Council, in the presence of the emperor, and slapped Arius because of his unbridled, satanic words against Jesus.
As you know, they stripped him of his episcopal rank and put him in prison. Strictly speaking, they were required to cut off his hand because he had struck someone in the emperor’s presence. That was the prescribed penalty. But someone said that this should indeed be done only after the Council had completed its work, so that its proceedings would not be interrupted. For the time being, let him be stripped of his rank...
let him be imprisoned, and let that punishment be carried out afterward.
While he was in prison, the Most Holy Theotokos and our Lord visited him. The Lord asked him, “What are you doing here, Nicholas?” He replied, “I am here because of my love for You.” Then our Lord gave him a Gospel book, and the Most Holy Theotokos gave him an omophorion. This is why, if you have noticed, the icon of Saint Nicholas prominently shows the Gospel book and the omophorion, while above Saint Nicholas it depicts Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos. The next day, when one of his friends came to bring him food after learning that he had been imprisoned, he found him wearing an omophorion. The others had stripped him of his rank, but his episcopal dignity had been restored; he had a Gospel book and was reading in hesychia, in inner stillness. Therefore, because he possessed the true and right faith, the Church of God...
honors this quality in him, which he had discerned with the sharp, perceptive nous of his soul. And the Church calls him a “rule of faith”—the true and correct faith. It is not enough, then, for me to believe in my own way. As I told you, the one who believes most accurately about divine matters is Satan. But he does not act accordingly. That is where the matter ends. For what is required is both right belief and right conduct. Let each of us examine whether we believe rightly, because if we believe rightly, we must also act rightly. If we do not act, that means we do not believe. “Yes, but...” “All right, but...” Whenever you see someone inserting a “but,” begin preparing black kollyva—memorial wheat—for him. Not yellow kollyva; make it black from now on, because Satan has deceived him.
What he affirms with his right hand, he rejects with his left. For the world has grown tired of hearing words; it wants to see. People want to see in you what you say and claim to believe. Someone says, “I have my Christ within me.” Really? Then why do you not bear fruit worthy of Him, if Christ is within you? How can you have Christ within you when your fruit is entirely contrary to Him? Your fruit is not full of light, but of darkness. For when the root is sound and the tree is sound, the fruit corresponds to them. How, then, can the fruit be utterly unlike them? How can it possibly be...
their complete opposite? How is it possible for you to believe? You believe, yet you do not go to Church. You believe, yet you do not go to Holy Confession. You believe, yet you receive Holy Communion without confession. You believe, yet you do not fast. You believe, as I said, yet you have no children. You believe, yet you steal. You believe, yet you lie. You believe, yet you refuse to speak to your neighbor. You believe and believe—but what kind of faith is this? What kind of Christ is this? What kind of God is this? What kind of religion have you fashioned for yourself? Are these not all things of our own making? They are not the rays that shine forth from the true faith. Right faith is demonstrated by right conduct; the two correspond. You enter a home, and immediately it is evident that the people there believe in Christ, that Christ dwells there. For wherever people truly believe, Christ also dwells, and His dwelling there is revealed by their entire way of life: by their clothing, their words, and their behavior in general...
by what they eat, by how they think and conduct their lives; by the fact that they do not wrong others but prefer to suffer wrong themselves, and that they do not harm others but prefer to suffer harm themselves. From these things it becomes clear that Christ is present there, that something different is taking place within that home. That is how it is. This, then, is roughly the meaning of the first part of the saint’s apolytikion.
The second part presents him as an “image of meekness”—that is, as a model, a model of meekness. Speaking for myself—I do not know about you—I confess that we do not possess meekness. And if we do, it is only partial, not complete. If we seem meek, it is probably because those beside us are extremely hot-tempered, to the highest degree, and by comparison we appear to be lambs beside wild beasts. But in reality, we are not meek.
Usually, when we wish to compare and measure ourselves, we choose people worse than ourselves, not those who are better. Do you want to measure whether you are meek or not? Take Jesus as your model. For Christ said, “Learn from Me, for I am meek and humble in heart.” He did not say, “Learn from your neighbor,” or “Learn from this or that person,” or even “Learn from the angels.” No. “Learn from Me, for I am meek and humble in heart.” If I nail you to the Cross, do you have the strength to tell me, “I forgive you”? If I strike you or slap you, as we say, do you have the strength to turn your other cheek to me? Or do you have the strength to say, “If I have spoken wrongly, bear witness to the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?” “Ah, but He was God.” This is where we confuse matters. This is where we become confused: yes, He was God...
but He said these things as a man; it was not His divinity that spoke them. For the divine nature cannot be beaten, cannot feel pain, cannot be insulted, and cannot suffer anything.
Was the Protomartyr Stephen God when he said, “Lord, forgive them; do not hold this sin against them”? He was not God. Whenever we are offended even slightly, because our spiritual life is not in good order, we immediately say, “He was God; that is why He could do those things.” Yes, but He said, “Learn from Me.” Was He lying, then? Did He tell us these things so that we might learn a virtue that is impossible for us? Is that true? It is not true at all. It can be put into practice, but we have never sought to become meek. For a person to become meek, he must first become humble. These two are inseparably joined. Meekness and humility are woven together.
“Learn from Me, My child, for I am meek and humble in heart.” If I were not humble in heart, I would not be meek. But we are proud. “Me? You speak to me that way? You do that to me? Do you know who I am?” And then comes one thing after another. We are proud. Where pride exists, meekness cannot exist; nor, at the same time, can humility exist. Where there is humility, there is also meekness. Do you remember the man who was spat upon? He took out his handkerchief, wiped himself, and continued speaking. Why? Because he immediately thought, “Who am I, that it should matter if they spat on me? They spat upon my Lord; they spat upon my God.” So he did not react, grow angry, or lose his temper.
“Who am I? Forgive them.” But where is such humility to be found? It does not exist in us. We assume that we are something important. But if a person is humble, believing that he deserves not only this but far worse, he immediately humbles himself and becomes calm. If we are not meek, this even harms our bodily health. You know that nervous people, who demand satisfaction and vindication and so forth, do not suffer only in worldly terms; they also suffer physically, and their health is placed in danger. How often do we advise people not to become agitated, but to remain calm and meek? Yet once again, their condition does not permit it...
their illness will not permit it; their heart cannot bear the strain. We often give them this advice as well. And yet this quality, which is a mark of the Christian, is lacking. A Christian must be meek. Whatever happens, whatever may come, he should always have a smile on his lips. Even if death comes: “Glory to God; it had to happen.” But faith is lacking. If faith were present as the foundation, meekness would follow as its fruit. But there is no faith—no true faith, no saving faith. I mean faith that truly benefits us, not a human faith of our own invention, false and self-made. It is true faith in the person of God and in the providence of God, who knows all things, foresees all things, and provides for all things,
always arranging what is profitable—that is, what is for the good of man—unless man insists on having his own way, in his pride, believing in nothing. But for the faithful person, Christ is the one who puts everything in order. He sustains, He watches over us, and He governs invisibly. Whatever He permits is blessed—thrice blessed. We may not see this at once, but we see it afterward. At noon, a woman was speaking to me on the telephone about a couple living abroad. She told me that she now condemns herself because, for years, she refused to speak to her daughter and son-in-law, since her daughter had dared to marry someone she did not approve of. “And I saw how deluded I was, Mr. Panagopoulos,” she told me.
“I saw it afterward. I had to suffer and torment myself for five whole years before I could see how deluded I had been.” Why? “Because,” she said, “I was living far from Christ.” It is good that she understood. Man torments himself greatly and suffers greatly. Consider even death, which we regard as the worst thing of all. We say, “As long as no one has died, everything else can be put right, however great the material loss may be.” Yet I tell you that even death—proverbially regarded as the worst and supposedly the most irreparable thing—is also blessed and must be faced with meekness. For a person who believes understands that, even at that moment, Christ permitted what was for his good—the greatest good, what had to happen
to a person whose life here is temporary. We begin with the assumption that we came here in order to go on living. We are still young, we still have time, and so on and so forth. Yet nothing is in our hands. We contributed nothing to our coming here. We will accomplish nothing merely by making plans. And when we depart, we lose nothing that was truly ours. So we are suspended in midair. We cannot hold on to the past, we do not command the present, and we cannot govern the future. Nothing is ours; we are simply suspended. And yet our pride is so great that we imagine we are somebody and others are nobody. What kind of grasp on reality is that? How, then, can such a person ever become calm, with so much pride and such a deluded mind? How can he find peace?
The faithful person remains calm and peaceful whatever happens—even if the earth rises up and the heavens come crashing down. What has happened? Death? That is where we are all going.
The day after tomorrow—tomorrow is the feast of Saint Barbara, and the day after tomorrow is the feast of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified. Take the trouble to read his life. You will see that when he left and went a short distance into the desert alone, to undertake ascesis there, he came face-to-face with Satan for the first time. Behind him, he heard a lion roaring against him. He turned around and was shaken, but then he recovered, took courage, and said to it, “If you have been sent, you have the power to devour me.”
It left behind a cloud of black smoke and vanished. It was Satan; he had simply come to frighten him. I am not dwelling on what Saint Sabbas did afterward, what happened, or what he said. I am dwelling on this: “If you have been sent to devour me, then here I am. I am already going there. I am on my way to death. You are only sending me an hour earlier—what harm can you do me? But if you have not been sent, leave me in peace.” He was young, and Satan left him alone. Do we possess this strength and peace, this meekness, this blessedness within us? And if we do not, why not? Because we do not believe. We do not believe; we merely speak empty words. We believe when we want Him to cure our cancer. Then we believe, because cancer is at stake. Then we prostrate ourselves, offer Paraklesis services, and do all the rest. Then we believe. But once the danger has passed—or when we do not have cancer—
our faith is nothing. Meekness, then, is inseparably joined to true faith; that is where it begins. A person cannot be meek, cannot become quiet and calm and close his eyes in peace, when so many dangers threaten him at every moment. He can do so only when he has a living, organic relationship with Jesus and believes that Christ will take his situation into His own hands. Then he becomes calm; then he finds peace. Of course, I admit that fear is human. Even the Apostles showed us this repeatedly. I remember—and you will remember when I tell you—how one day they were sailing on the Sea of Tiberias, and Christ was asleep in the bow.
A violent storm arose and threatened to tear them apart. They were afraid and terrified. Though they were all fishermen, men of the sea, they became like men from the mountains and were frightened when they saw the waves. In their terror, they went and woke Him. When our Lord arose, He turned to the sea and said, “Peace, be still.” And there was a great calm. If a person truly believed in Christ, this is what he would do in the difficult situations that trouble him and make him lose his composure, his sleep, and even his health—for many people have lost their health in this way. If, in such moments, they went and woke Christ, they would face their troubles
beautifully and in the right way. There was once a man who went every afternoon to a little isolated chapel. When people met him on the road, they would ask, “Where are you going again?” “I am going,” he would reply, “to break down God’s door.” In other words, he was going to pray to God. “I am going to break down God’s door.”
But why would he need to break down God’s door? Could God perhaps not be at home? God is always there. Is there ever any possibility that He is not? Your friend or your neighbor may be away. They may even have forgotten to turn off the light, making you think they are home when they are not. But God is always there. Yet we lack the confidence that God is always there, that He sees you in danger and waits for you to entrust yourself to Him, so that He may take charge of you and you may become calm and find peace. For when a person entrusts everything to God with confidence, matters are resolved. If you have the Old Testament, read the seventh chapter of Isaiah, where two kings went to war against a king of Israel. When that king of Israel learned that war had been declared against him, he removed his royal garments so that he would not be recognized. He left the city dressed as a private citizen, walked to its outskirts, and came to a winepress—the place where grapes are trodden. He went inside, hid himself, and prayed to God
to take the matter into His own hands. God saw him and sent the Prophet Isaiah, saying, “Go to such-and-such a field, to that winepress. The king is there praying. Tell him not to be troubled by those two smoking firebrands.” That is what He called those powerful kings: smoking firebrands, not blazing ones. What do firebrands do when they smoke? They merely make your eyes sting a little. That is how God described them. But the king went and knelt because he believed in God, the true God. Then, of course, he returned calm and peaceful. And that is how the matter unfolded: God dealt with them. Does this faith exist in individuals, in the Church, in society? Does this faith exist in our nation? No, it does not.
The day after tomorrow we celebrate Saint Nicholas. The whole maritime world celebrates Saint Nicholas, yet everyone blasphemes him as well. Do you understand? This is not how things should be. If we believe that these things benefit us not only spiritually but also physically, then consider this: a meek person, a person who draws near to God, will live for five hundred years.
Why should his blood pressure rise because of his anxious thoughts? It will not. He will not develop diabetes or anything else. He passes his life in blessedness and leaves this world like a swallow. The Ascension, the Annunciation—thank you. He is able to resolve everything, as the saying goes, with the greatest ease. The third part is the one people do not much want to hear: “a teacher of self-control.” “A rule of faith, an image of meekness, and a teacher of self-control.” Tradition tells us that, from infancy, this child showed that he would make spiritual progress. On Wednesdays and Fridays, it is said, he would not take milk from his mother’s breast until sunset—that is, until Vespers, which is already the beginning of the next liturgical day. From early childhood he was always a man of self-control. As you know, this self-control is beneficial to man.
But it is lacking in man. It is not there. We are unrestrained; we do not exercise self-control. Self-control has many branches. It concerns not only food, but also the flesh, the belly, and many other areas. It appears in many forms. One person lacks sexual self-control. Another lacks self-control over his appetite; he is a slave to his belly and overeats. Another lacks control of his tongue. There are countless examples. A person must be restrained, making proper use of things without abusing them or causing harm. Young people in particular say—and many of us who are older say it too—
“These things were given for man.” As they say, woman was given for man, and man was given for woman. Therefore, they conclude, I may use a woman or a man however and whenever I please. That is wrong. Woman was not given indiscriminately in this way. Woman was given for the bearing of children, not for fornication and adultery.
The flesh was not given for masturbation, nor for sexual relations between men, nor for so many other inventions. God established only Holy Matrimony, for the bearing of children. He created Eve, blessed her, and gave her to Adam. He blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply.” When you take a woman or a man without God’s blessing, why do you do it? To have children? No.
You will kill the children; you will drag the woman from place to place, quarrel with her, humiliate her, and wound her every day, if you even take her as your own at all. No—it is simply for pleasure. You alter “be fruitful” to mean “seek pleasure,” and you distort “multiply” as well. Yet self-control, and even virginity, is a gift of God. God grants it; human beings do not produce it by themselves. Out of a thousand people, perhaps one, two, or five may have the strength and the grace from God to remain continent and preserve their virginity. The rest do not possess this strength. They may enter the harbor of Holy Matrimony, whether they are men or women. Holy Matrimony is blessed by God. Of course, it cannot attain the measure of virginity, but it does secure salvation, provided that fornication,
adultery, sexual relations between men, masturbation, and all the other inventions of Satan—through which a person seeks sexual pleasure without the bearing of children, and even tries to make it lawful—are rejected. These things belong to the evil one, and the evil one will take such a person to his own dwelling, the dwelling of the demons, if that is the path he follows. Another form of self-control concerns food, regardless of what day it is.
Whether it is Wednesday or Friday, whether it is a fasting season, they sweep every distinction aside and tell you, “God made these things for us.”
It is true that God made these things for man—but for what kind of man? That is the question. Have you ever read the account of creation and seen that He made all these things first, and then He made man? He made the plant kingdom, the realm of fruit and trees, and so on.
He made the realm of the fish, the birds, and the animals—all these things for man. And then, after He had made everything, He made His beloved child, man, and said to him: “Behold, they are yours; all things are lawful. But you must not touch this one thing.” He told him: “Nine hundred and ninety-nine things will be yours, but one will not be yours. You must not touch it. If you do, two deaths await you.” What happened? Man disobeyed; he did not obey. And what followed? He was cast out of Paradise and cut off from God. Man was expelled from Paradise, and to this day he lives in exile. The fasting we speak of today was ordained in Paradise. Adam received the first commandment: “Of the tree
you may eat.” The words “you shall not eat” were the institution of fasting. “If Eve had fasted from the tree, we would not now have need of this fast,” says Basil the Great. These words I am telling you are not my own. “Let us fast, then,” since we were not like them, if we desire to return to Paradise. Yet what do we do? For man before the Fall, all things were lawful. But for man after the Fall, Paul says: “All things are lawful, but not all things are beneficial.” I may eat meat day and night; I may do whatever I please—but it is not beneficial. It will lead you astray, quite apart from the illnesses it brings, for fasting is also good for a person’s health. When you go to the doctor, he will prescribe fasting, but he calls it a diet. He does not call it fasting; he calls it a diet. The doctor said “diet,” and because the doctor said it, you follow the diet. But if Christ says it, you let Christ go on calling out unheard.
Here the doctor is treated as greater than Christ. If a person were willing to fast during the fasts ordained by the Orthodox Church, he would never become ill—never. And if, from the age of nine or ten, he were willing to live naturally and lawfully, rather than immorally, he would never become ill. All the psychiatric hospitals are full; all the neurological clinics are full. Syngros Hospital has filled up again and is overflowing. Why? Where has all this come from? From lawful marriages? From where? From self-control? No. It has come from lack of self-control and from all these other things. How do all these unlawful establishments keep operating?
How do all these nightclubs operate? How do all these scantily clad waitresses carry on? How? They operate through eating. Let them stop eating for three days; let neither cooking pot nor grill be used, and you will see: fornication dies out, adultery dies out, everything dies out. Fasting has extraordinary power to put an end to all this worship of the flesh. All these things thrive on the finest delicacies. The best and choicest meats are consumed in all these centers of lawlessness and corruption, feeding the corruption of the young. No woman goes off to fornicate, and no man to commit adultery, after eating boiled greens and squash. They eat the choicest foods.
These matters require neither philosophy nor great learning. You know them better than I do, but they have arisen in the course of our discussion.
I repeat: from early childhood, then, he was a teacher of self-control, a master of self-control. And now I want to pause over another point. His feast—his commemoration and the honor we pay him—always falls within this forty-day fast, during which there is no meat, butter, milk, or eggs. Fish is permitted only on Saturday and Sunday. Very well, if his feast falls on a weekend, as God willing it will next year... This year it falls on Thursday. Next year it would fall on Friday, but because it is a leap year it will move ahead two days and fall on Saturday.
Saturday. So then fish will be permitted. But those named Nicholas—what will they serve the day after tomorrow to celebrate? How can they serve meat for the feast of a fasting Saint?
How can they celebrate without the Saint? For the Saint will not sit at their table. Tell me, what honor will they be showing him? What blessing will enter their home? And what do we mean by going to wish such a person many years? That he may live many years and keep doing the same things? Is this not shameful? Is it not an insult? Is it not blasphemy? “But we are celebrating.” The Saint is celebrating; you are not. If you want his blessing, make a dish cooked with oil. Buy some squid or cuttlefish. After all, whom are you feeding? For whom will you buy lamb? For whom will you buy steaks or veal? For the hungry? “But they do not eat such fasting foods,” you say. Then let those gentlemen go and eat in their own homes. Here they will eat food cooked with oil, if they wish.
Or let them come another time. If you want to serve fish, go and buy five fine sea bream and set a table. But what we are doing is blasphemy. We have driven the Saints out of our homes. They no longer come to our tables or enter our homes to bless our children, our elders, and the work of our hands, because by the way we live we blaspheme them. It is as though we said: “Well, Geronta, you made fools of yourselves and wasted your lives. I am going to eat.” You are going to eat, are you? And then you offer feast-day greetings? Explain that to me. Woe to you. I do not wish to threaten anyone; I have no power to do so. I only want to remind you of the harm we are doing to ourselves. And because God is good, He does not answer us with force.
Yet one day we shall find all these things before us, so take heed. If you are celebrating, do it properly. Make fasting sweets, or buy fasting sweets to serve. Offer whatever is permitted, since we are Orthodox Christians and say that we believe. Otherwise, if we are unbelievers, it is only natural that we should reap such results. Our deeds will prove that we do not believe. And since we do not believe, it follows that we do not believe in the Saint either. If we do not believe in Christ the Lawgiver, neither do we believe in the Saint, who is a child of that Lawgiver; and therefore there is no reason to celebrate. It is a vicious circle and does us immense harm. So, if you think that these three things—the matter of faith, the matter of self-control, and the matter of meekness—are necessary for us, and that more or less we do not possess them as we should, then we must admit it. Let us make an effort, then, and let us pray to Christ.
As I said, let us quickly awaken Christ and ask Him to take charge of our Church and preserve our faith, because in our days it is in danger. We ourselves are in danger today. Among the other things we do and ask for—our children, our needs, our health, and so on, and rightly so—the first thing both we and our children must learn to pray is this: “Our Christ, do not hand us over to the Papacy; do not hand us over. If they return to our Orthodoxy, then let there be ‘one flock and one shepherd.’ If not, do not let us be trampled underfoot or lose this pearl that You have preserved for us until today.” All the satans of the earth have set themselves against us to take it away. I pray that Saint Nicholas, who fought for the faith at the First Ecumenical Council, may help us in this matter, together with Saint Barbara,
and the other Saints: Saint John Damascene and Saint Sabbas the Sanctified.

Ο Κύριος ημών Ιησούς Χριστός, αυτός τη δίδει, την πίστη, τη σωστή πίστη, την πίστη εκείνη που σώζει, τη σώζουσα πίστη. Στις περιπλανήσεις γύρω σου θα βρεις πολλά είδη πίστεως. Ρωτάς τον άλλον: «Πιστεύεις;» «Ε, βέβαια πιστεύω». «Πού πιστεύεις;» «Πιστεύω στον Θεό». Ρωτάς τον άλλον: «Πιστεύεις;» «Και βέβαια πιστεύω». «Τι πιστεύεις;» «Πιστεύω σε μια ανώτερη δύναμη». Πηγαίνεις στον άλλον πιο κάτω: «Εσύ πιστεύεις;» «Ε, βέβαια πιστεύω». «Τι πιστεύεις;» «Πιστεύω σε ένα ανώτερο ον». Ο άλλος πιστεύει στον Χριστό, επί παραδείγματι. Καλά, τον Χριστό πώς τον πιστεύεις; Ότι ήταν ένας έξυπνος άνθρωπος, ένας αναμορφωτής, ένας υψηλός άνθρωπος. Ο άλλος πώς πιστεύει;
Να δει.
Δεν ψεύδομαι διότι πιστεύω. Δεν ζω κατά κόσμον διότι πιστεύω εις τον Χριστόν. Εκκλησιάζομαι διότι πιστεύω. Προσεύχομαι διότι πιστεύω. Καταλάβατε; Η ζωή μου δεν αποδεικνύει την ορθή πίστη μου και, αν θέλουμε να πούμε ότι «εγώ πιστεύω, ο Χριστός είναι Θεός» και τα λοιπά, η πράξη μου αποδεικνύει το τελείως αντίθετο. Άνθρωποι οι οποίοι είναι γεμάτο το σπίτι τους από εικόνες δεν έχουν κανένα παιδί ή, αν έχουν, έχουν ένα. Τα υπόλοιπα τα πετούν. Τι βγαίνει από αυτό; Διότι έχουν εικόνες, είναι πιστοί;
Γιατί είναι άνθρωπος, αγαπώ για την εικόνα και ομοίωση του Θεού, αγαπώ γιατί θυσιάζεται ο Χριστός μου, είναι περιουσία του Θεού. Δεν συμφωνώ, όμως. Άλλο το ένα, άλλο το άλλο. Διότι σε αγαπώ, θα αρνηθώ την πίστη μου; Αυτό είναι; Η αγάπη είναι συναίσθημα. Αγάπη από αγάπη διαφέρει. Πώς θα πας στον Πανάγιο Τάφο και δεν δίδει το φως της Αναστάσεως ο Χριστός ειμή μόνον στους Ορθοδόξους, σε κανέναν άλλον; Πώς θα το ερμηνεύσουμε αυτό; Πώς σου λέει «εδώ είναι»; Εφόσον μόνο ο Ορθόδοξος Αγιασμός διατηρείται, κανένας άλλος. Πώς θα το ερμηνεύσουμε αυτό; Αυτό, θα συμβουλεύσουν και αυτόν τον Θεό; Ποιος έχει αυτή τη δύναμη να συμβουλεύσει τον Θεό;
για έναν προσωρινό άνθρωπο. Εμείς ξεκινάμε από το ότι ήρθαμε για να ζήσουμε. Είμαστε νέοι ακόμη, έχουμε περιθώριο και λοιπά και λοιπά και λοιπά. Ωστόσο ούτε έχουμε τίποτα στο χέρι μας εμείς. Ούτε που ήρθαμε εβάλαμε τίποτα. Ούτε που συζηρούμε θα κάνουμε τίποτα. Ούτε που θα φύγουμε χάνουμε τίποτα. Λοιπόν, στον αέρα είμαστε. Ούτε το παρελθόν το κρατάμε, ούτε το παρόν το εξουσιάζουμε, ούτε το μέλλον μπορούμε να το κυβερνήσουμε. Τίποτα, αιωρούμενοι είμαστε. Και εν τούτοις ο εγωισμός μας είναι τόσος, που νομίζουμε εμείς είμαστε και άλλοι δεν είναι. Ποια πραγματικότητα είναι; Πώς είναι δυνατόν λοιπόν να ηρεμήσει ένας άνθρωπος τέτοιος, με τόσο εγωισμό και με τόσο ψεύτικο κεφάλι; Πώς μπορεί να ηρεμήσει;
Ο γιατρός εδώ, ο γιατρός είναι ανώτερος από το Χριστό. Γιατί, αν ο άνθρωπος ήθελε να νηστεύσει στις νηστείες που έχει νομοθετήσει η Εκκλησία, η Ορθόδοξος, ουδέποτε θα αρρώσταινε, ουδέποτε. Και αν ήθελε να ζήσει φυσικά και νόμιμα, όχι ανήθικα, από εννιά χρονών και από δέκα χρονών, να ζούσε φυσικά και νόμιμα, δεν επρόκειτο να αρρωστήσει ποτέ ο άνθρωπος. Γέμισαν τα τρελάδικα όλα, γέμισαν όλες οι νευρολογικές κλινικές, γέμισαν. Του Συγγρού ξαναγέμισε και ξεχείλισε. Γιατί; Από πού; Από τους νόμιμους γάμους; Από πού; Από την εγκράτεια; Όχι, από την ακρασία, από αυτά όλα είναι. Πώς λειτουργούν όλα αυτά τα παράνομα;
Σάββατο. Λοιπόν, τότε θα έχει ψάρι. Οι άλλοι, οι Νικολάκηδες, πώς θα προσφέρουν μεθαύριο για να γιορτάσουν; Με έναν νηστευτή Άγιο πώς θα προσφέρουν κρέατα;
