Summary

The lecture outlines the five Sundays of Great Lent: Orthodoxy, Gregory Palamas, the Veneration of the Cross, John Climacus, and preparation to accompany Christ toward His Passion and Resurrection. Salvation is found within the Church through Baptism as spiritual burial and rebirth, the Eucharist as sustaining spiritual life, and repentance and confession as necessary remedies for sin. The lecture concludes that the Christian name alone does not save; believers must embody both Orthodoxy and faithful obedience in preparation for judgment and eternal life.

I wish you a blessed Great Lent, by the grace of God, since we are now in this season. Indeed, we are in a stricter period than the preceding part of the Triodion with which we began. What is called Great Lent has five Sundays, known as the Sundays of the Fast.

Each Sunday has its own theme. The first Sunday is dedicated to Orthodoxy. The second Sunday is dedicated to a great Father of the Church, Saint Gregory Palamas, a great defender of the faith who, unfortunately, has been buried in obscurity. If you want to learn about Saint Gregory Palamas and cannot get to libraries or other sources, obtain the fourth volume of the Philokalia, which is now in circulation. There you will find his writings and his struggles. We have been greatly benefited by him; he did much to protect us from the papists.

The third Sunday of the Fast is known as the Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross. The Precious Cross is brought forward for the faithful to venerate, so that they may draw strength from it and complete the rest of the Fast. For if someone stands at the Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross and looks either back toward the starting point or ahead toward the end, he will see that the distance is the same. The fourth Sunday of the Fast is dedicated to another great Father of nepsis, or watchfulness, Saint John Climacus, who speaks about metanoia—repentance—and about the return of the human person, about

this great weapon and this great gift that God left to mankind: the Mystery of repentance and confession. Without this Mystery, no one can be saved. There are no sinless people—none born from their mother’s womb and none who have lived in this world without sin. If this Mystery were taken away, I tell you, no one would enter Paradise. The fifth Sunday of the Fast is dedicated to preparation: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered up.” It prepares each person so that, if he wishes, he too may make himself ready to accompany Jesus on the path of His Passion and thus also share in His Resurrection. At the end of this season, of course, comes the raising of Lazarus, because I want you to understand that Great Lent ends on the Saturday of Lazarus.

After that, we enter another period called Holy Week, or the Week of the Passion. That is a distinct period. The whole span is fifty days; it is not all the Forty Days of Lent. Great Lent begins on Clean Monday and ends on the Saturday of Lazarus. So this evening I would like to say something for our spiritual benefit connected with this first Sunday of the Fast and with the question of Orthodoxy. I do not know whether this matter has ever concerned you: whether one’s faith is true or false. God... Many people believe, but they do not know where they place their faith, what they believe, or how they believe. Since God is one...

The work of redemption is one. So how many kinds of faith should there be, and how many ways of salvation? I believe that there must be one way of faith and one way of salvation. And yet, if you look around the world—or even just around our own neighborhoods—you will find many kinds of faith and many proposed ways of salvation, although there is one faith, one religion, one way of salvation, and one Church. Human egotism, Satan, and self-interest have created many kinds of faith and many supposed ways of salvation. I do not know whether you have noticed...

There is a hierarch in the Church. At one point in the service, he takes both the dikirion and the trikirion—one candlestick with two candles and another with three—and comes forward, asking God to bless this vine. “O Lord, O Lord,” he says, “look down from heaven and behold, and visit and perfect this vine which Your right hand has planted.” There is one vine. People have acted wrongly in devising many ways of salvation.

“I am the true vine,” says Christ. The Protestants say that they possess the truth. The papists say that they possess the truth. Jehovah’s Witnesses say that they possess the truth. The Muslims say that they possess the truth. The Buddhists say that they possess the truth. And I do not know how many thousands of other variations there are, all claiming to possess the truth. In the end, who possesses this truth? How many interpretations can this Gospel have? Surely it has one true interpretation. Who possesses that true interpretation? Who possesses the true faith? Do the papists have it? Do the Protestants? Do Jehovah’s Witnesses? Who has it? Do the others have it? Who has it? Even if all we did was

present the facts of history to them, they would all have to disappear from the face of the earth. Every one of them. Orthodoxy alone can remain. No other confession can withstand examination—not even historical examination, let alone theological examination. For if we ask a papist today, “Since when has your confession existed?” what will he say? Since 1054.

Was there no Church before then? And when we ask a Protestant...

or Jehovah’s Witnesses, their answer may take us back to the eighteenth or nineteenth century. For eighteen centuries, then, were there no people, no Church, no Saints, no Mysteries, and no martyrs? Have you only now discovered the truth? Let us ask the Buddhist: “Where is your faith? What is its foundation?” Let us ask the Muslims: “What is your foundation?” Orthodoxy alone withstands examination. If we trace Orthodoxy backward, do you know where we will arrive? At the Upper Room. Take, for example, a bishop today. “Come here, Your Eminence. From whom did you receive your commission?” He will tell you, “From this bishop, that bishop, and another bishop.” “Then let those who ordained this man come here. From whom did you receive your commission and the laying on of hands?”

“From this one, that one, and another.” “Then let those men come here.” “From such-and-such a bishop,” and so on. And if we keep tracing the line backward, we will find ourselves in the embrace of the Apostles. The papist, however, will end up in the embrace of the Pope. The Protestant will end up in the embrace of Luther. The Jehovah’s Witness will end up in the embrace of that other man, Russell. The Buddhist will end up with Buddha. The Muslim will end up with Muhammad. The tombs of all these founders of religions still exist, and their bodies remain within them. Only the religion of the Nazarene has an empty tomb. Death held every one of them. Only the Founder of Orthodoxy could not be held by death.

We Orthodox Christians have a Founder whose tomb is empty.

Unfortunately, acting out of ignorance and not understanding what it means to believe rightly—or what it may cost us not to believe rightly—we often regard everyone as a saint simply because he is a good person. I have said many times that all merely good people are in Hell. No merely good person is in Paradise. Someone may ask, “What, then? Are the wicked in Paradise?” No. Christians are in Paradise.

Not all good people are Christians, though all true Christians are good people. It is not enough to be a good person, to be careful and avoid stepping on ants. That is not enough. You must believe rightly. Human salvation begins with faith; it does not begin with good manners. The Gospel is not a book of social etiquette. There are people considered very good who violate their girlfriends and then throw them out of a window. Many women are terrified of a cockroach, yet deliberately kill their own children and throw them into the rubbish bin. Only a Christian lacks the power to commit such crimes.

Christians do not have the power to do them. The hand is disarmed, because Christ stands in the midst and faith is present. Faith reminds us that judgment awaits beyond the grave. So many others believe that everything ends at the grave. No. Orthodoxy proclaims that there is life beyond the grave and judgment after death. Each person therefore takes that judgment into account and changes his life. So the question of Orthodoxy must concern us: Do I believe rightly? If a ship’s captain believes he is sailing on the correct course when he has actually made an error, his belief will not save him from shipwreck. And if those under his charge drown, he may say to you afterward, “I put my hand on my heart; I truly thought I was going the right way.” Yes, but you struck the rocks and dragged the others to their deaths with you. It is not enough for a person to believe in his own way. It is not enough to believe whatever he wishes.

A person must believe what he ought to believe and what has been handed down to him. Approach people—good people, people from whose hands you might receive antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after the Divine Liturgy—and ask them what they believe. You will soon discover the answer. “Well, of course, I believe in some higher...” They fall short even of others. “I believe in a higher power; of course, something must exist.” Go a little further. “I believe in God, of course.” Go further still. “I believe in Christ.” But how do you believe in this Christ? “Of course, He was a reformer, a great figure who preached things no one else had ever preached.” All such people are headed for Hell.

A supreme being does not save; neither does a higher power, nor a vague belief in God, nor belief in Christ merely as a reformer, an exalted man, a socialist, or whatever else people imagine Him to be. No. A person must believe what the Angel proclaimed as dogma to the Myrrh-bearing Women. Do you remember what he said? “You seek Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He is not here.” This is the very point. My dear friend, I am not asking whether you believe in a supreme being, a higher power, Jehovah, or some Christ whom you call a reformer. I am asking whether you believe in Jesus the Crucified, the Nazarene. Is this the Christ in whom you believe? When our Athenian forefathers heard Paul’s preaching and he came to the matter of the Resurrection, it seemed so ridiculous to them that they ended the discussion. “Enough of this conversation,” they said. “Let it rest for now; we will hear you again another time.” Death and the Resurrection seemed that absurd to them. But do our own people, who claim to believe in this sense, truly believe in death and the Resurrection? They certainly believe in death, because whether they wish it or not, they will die, and perhaps they have already buried loved ones. Yet they do not believe in the Resurrection that lies beyond the grave. Anyone who does not believe in the Resurrection does not believe in Christ and lacks what is necessary, because two truths secure salvation for the human person: the divinity of Jesus and the Resurrection of Jesus.

If Christ were not God, or if Christ had not risen, there would be no salvation. Glory to God, however: He was God, and He did rise. Thus salvation has been secured for us, provided that we are also willing to work out our salvation.

The Evangelist Luke, who wrote the Acts of the Apostles—and I do not know whether you are aware that the author of Acts is also the Evangelist Luke—wrote two letters. One is his Gospel, addressed to the most excellent Theophilus of Achaia, and his other letter, his other epistle, is the Acts of the Apostles. There, in Acts 4:12, he says: “There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

No other person can save man except Jesus. And not just any Jesus, but Jesus the Crucified, Jesus the Nazarene: this Jesus, the Son of Mary, who was the Son of God and became the Son of the Virgin. This is the One. He does not save the believer on the road, in the marketplace, at home, at the stadium, at the racetrack, at Bemix, or wherever else. He saves him in the inn. We have all fallen among robbers. We have all fallen into the hands of Satan. If we wish to be saved,

we must go to the inn, where Christ took the man who had fallen among robbers, as He taught us in that most beautiful parable. He entrusts us to the innkeepers, who are the priests, and gives them the two denarii: the Old Testament and the New Testament, or Holy Scripture and Tradition, so that we may be saved. Outside the inn, outside the Church, there is no salvation.

Man comes into the world spiritually dead. That is why, in the theology of our grandmothers, every newborn child was called, according to its sex, a little dragon or dragoness—a male devil or a female devil. That was grandmother’s theology. Man comes spiritually dead, and every dead person must be buried. Baptism is a burial; the baptismal font is a tomb. “We were buried with Him in the likeness of the death of Jesus,” says the reading from the Apostle that is read during Baptism, from the sixth chapter of Romans.

If you want to look into this more deeply, you can find the passage at home. And then the person rises. Just as Christ was buried and rose on the third day, so we too rise and become new people. We are born again. The Protestants say that Baptism symbolizes rebirth. They do not say that it is rebirth; they say that it symbolizes rebirth. But Baptism does not merely symbolize rebirth—it is rebirth. And Christ told us: “Unless a man is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” No unbaptized person can enter, because he has not been buried in the likeness of the death of Jesus and has not risen. Baptism is burial and Resurrection. But...

Suppose a mother, a mother according to the flesh, gives birth to a child but does not nourish it and does not bring it to her breast to feed it. What will happen? The child will die. Or if you plant a flower in a pot but do not water it, what will happen? It will wither. So too, one who is born again from the spiritual mother—the baptismal font of the Church—but is not nourished from the breast of the Church through another Mystery, called Holy Communion, is alive and yet dead once more. He is like the Prodigal Son of whom Christ said: “He has a name that he is alive, yet he is dead...”

“Your brother was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” Every person who is far from the Church, far from Christ, and far from the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is a living corpse. He has natural life, such as the beasts, the birds, and the fish possess, but he does not have spiritual life. This rebirth, then, takes place only in the Orthodox Church and nowhere else. Roman Catholics, for example, do not baptize by immersion; they sprinkle. Among Protestants, Baptism is not a Mystery and not the washing of regeneration, as Paul writes. They say that it merely symbolizes rebirth. Likewise, for them Holy Communion is not the Body and Blood of Christ, even though Paul speaks of one who does not discern the Body and Blood of Christ. Pay attention!

First Corinthians, chapter eleven, verse twenty-six. And Christ said: “Take, eat My Body, and drink My Blood.” He did not say, “This symbolizes My Body, and this symbolizes My Blood.” No. This is My Body, and this is My Blood. And whoever does not eat the Body of the Son of Man has no life in himself. He has natural life, but he does not have spiritual life. Therefore, I repeat, it is not enough for a person to believe in his own way and live whatever life he chooses—whatever he finds easy or establishes for himself—simply because he refuses to obey. Not every kind of faith leads us rightly. So I repeat: it is not enough for a person to believe in his own way.

He must believe rightly. And he must also act rightly. A boat needs two oars to travel: one marked “faith” and the other “works”—or, better still, “right belief” and “right practice.” For many people perform works, but they give from what they have stolen, from what they have gained through injustice, from another person’s blood and sweat, from another person’s apartment or land, from schemes, from defrauding the state, from defrauding the Social Insurance Institute, and from cheating the tax office.

Then they give some of it away. That is not right practice. No one appointed you as the steward of what belongs to others. A few days ago, I received a telephone call. “Mr. Panagopoulos, I listened to one of your recordings.” Very well; go on. What happened? I am listening. “I bought a property and cheated the tax office out of twelve thousand drachmas. Now I thought I would give that money as alms.” No. Give from your own pocket. Give from your own sweat. That money belongs to the state, and that is where you must give it. No, no—you must give it there. Whether they choose to use it as alms is their concern, though they will not.

No one appointed you steward over what belongs to others. Do you know how often such things happen? Then someone says, “I believe in Christ.” Yes, but you do not act according to Christ. Consequently, as you pull on only one oar, your little boat goes round and round in circles. It is not enough simply to act rightly without believing rightly, nor is it enough merely to believe that Christ is God. The devil also believes that Christ is God, yet he does not cease to be the devil. James says in his epistle: “Even the demons believe—and tremble.” We do not tremble.

We do not believe. Our faith is lukewarm. If we truly believed, would we do the things we do, either openly or in secret? Would we say the things we say if we believed that Christ was standing before us? Do we believe in Christ in that sense? We do not. That is precisely why we have reached the state we are in today. So, as I say, it is not enough for a person to believe in his own way, since, as I told you, even the demons believe. A person’s works provide the proof that he believes. We may say that we believe. Many of you will say, “Of course we believe! What are we, Turks, that we should not believe? Are we unbelievers? Do you not see the icons in our home? Do you not see our vigil lamps? Do you not see the prosphora and the kollyva we bring on the appointed occasions? Of course we believe.” Very well!

That is precisely the question. How, then, can you do all those other things? Where are your children? How can you do such things? Why do you not fast?

How can these things be justified? Where are your prayers? How often do you go to confession? How often do you receive Holy Communion? How will you justify these things? Enter a church where a thousand Orthodox Christians are gathered. Ten or twenty little children will come forward to receive Holy Communion, along with four or five adults. What are all the other Orthodox Christians doing? They do not receive. Why do they not receive? Is it because they are angels?

Their way of life prevents them. A mother brings her child to receive Holy Communion, but she herself does not receive. Why does the mother not receive? Because she kills her other children. How can you offer a child to Christ with bloodstained hands and ask Him to sanctify it? This is why people today are under demonic influence. This is why little children of seven or eight years old are almost driving us out of our own homes.

Can this be right? First of all, have you brought fasting into your home? Is fasting present there? And I do not mean only fasting from food—cheese and meat—but bodily chastity as well, and fasting in speech and with the eyes. Turn off the television and put it out of sight. If you go to the Church, you will see that she has put on mourning. She is dressed in black. If you look at the priests now, you will see that they wear white only on Saturdays and Sundays. On all the other days they wear dark vestments that remind us of mourning. What has changed in our own homes? Where did you go on Clean Monday? You went to fly a kite for your grandchild. Adam and Eve were outside Paradise, weeping and beating their heads, and we are the descendants of Adam and Eve. How did we conduct ourselves?

If we examine these things, we will discover that we are perhaps not such fine Christians after all. We have the sign outside, but no merchandise within. Imagine a shop with a sign reading “The Lily” or “The Dove,” but when you enter, the flies nearly carry you away. Do you understand? The name speaks of purity, but inside the flies swarm around you. What home can claim to be free from sins of the flesh? What home could withstand an inspection? We say, “The tax office is coming to inspect our business,” or whatever it may be, and our hearts begin pounding and our blood pressure rises to two hundred, because we know our nest is dirty.

Who can withstand an examination by Christ, the Crucified, the Nazarene? Who could bear it if the Most Holy Theotokos appeared? What mother or daughter could bear to have her speak to her in her own language?

Who can stand before his or her patron saint? I before Saint Demetrios, another before Saint John the Forerunner, others before Saint Mary, Saint Barbara, Saint Catherine, Saint Marina, and so on. Tell me, who can stand before them? We offend them, and yet they tolerate us. A title, then, does not save us. It is not enough merely to say that one is a Christian. Saint Ignatius the God-Bearer says, “I do not wish merely to be called a Christian, but truly to be one. I do not merely wish to say that I am one, but to be found as one,” and he continues.

Will we be found faithful and consistent? What does God require in our works and in our faith? If you rightly believe in the one God, the Triune God, and in these days you cry out, “O Lord of hosts, be with us,” then do not say it if you do not mean it—go away. When you say, “Who is so great a God as our God?” how can you lose heart at the same time and steal because you fear you will not manage? You lose heart and refuse to have children; you kill them instead of trusting that God will provide. You lose heart and break the fast on Wednesdays, Fridays, and during the fasting seasons, although you have no proven illness that would justify such an exception. How is this possible? If, then, we choose to examine our lives in this light—in addition to the doctrinal point I made, that only the Orthodox Church can withstand examination...

The others will fall away along the road: some in the 1800s, some in the 1500s, some in 1054, some in the sixth century, and so on. The only Church is the Orthodox Church, the only one the devil fears. I remember that I once told you about an incident on Tinos involving a demon-possessed Roman Catholic girl. I will repeat it for the others. A nineteen-year-old Catholic girl had become demon-possessed. Naturally, they called the priests there to read whatever prayers they had to read. But the demon acted as though nothing had happened. It paid no attention when their priest came in or when he left. He spoke, but the demon simply let him talk. The girl’s mother, however, a widow, was suffering terribly. Another Catholic woman knew that when Orthodox priests read the prayers, demons come out.

How could she tell her? She saw her suffering every day. The girl would not remain inside the house. She would wreck things, smash them, and so on. The people were in danger. One day, when the two of them were alone, the woman dared to say to her, “Why don’t you ask someone to bring one of their priests?” The mother became angry. “Why? Don’t we have faith? Isn’t ours the true religion?” And so on. “Yes,” the old woman said, “our faith is good, yes—but their priests cast out demons, while ours do not.” The mother was angry and shut the door on the matter. But the devil tormented her so severely for another ten or fifteen days that at last she gave way. As we say, she began to come down to earth. Finally, the two women secretly came to an understanding and arranged, again in secret, to notify a priest who was not from the local parish.

He was retired and lived on the outskirts of Tinos. They asked him to come secretly, in the hope that God might show mercy. So the old woman went to fetch the priest. He too was an elderly man. She explained the situation, but did not tell him that the family was Catholic. “Why don’t you go to the parish priests?” he asked. “They have too much work and have no time, Father, to come and read exorcisms and such things for us. That is why we are asking you.” “I will come,” he said. He took his worn epitrachelion, his priestly stole, folded it into his pocket, picked up his little walking stick, and set out. He was an old man. The moment the priest started on his way, the demon in the house began tearing the place apart. “That goat is coming here! I will...”

“I will tear him apart like a sardine! I will kill all of you today! Why are you bringing him here?” The other little demons had warned it, you understand, because there are lesser demons that, among their other tasks, keep watch, as we say. One of them had brought word that the priest was coming and that it should prepare itself. Satan is not everywhere present. If he is here, he cannot also be there. Another demon brings him the news: “He is coming; take your precautions.” So it began wrecking the house. The elder and those with him knew nothing of what was happening and continued on their way. When they reached the neighborhood and the woman showed him the door, the elder stopped. “But this is a papist house,” he said. “This is a Catholic home. What business do we have here?” She replied, “Listen, geronta. Yes, that is true, and I did not tell you. Forgive me. But do not forget that she too is a creature of God.”

“She may not belong to Orthodoxy, but she is a human being. Have compassion, show love, and come in. They called one of their own priests, but he could do nothing.” I do not know how our gracious Lord spoke within him, but the elder felt compassion for their plight and opened the door to enter. The moment the priest appeared inside—well, then, who could see God and not be afraid? The demon began hurling the girl down and battering her about like a cuttlefish: up to the ceiling, down again; up to the ceiling, down again. “I will tear that old goat apart! Why are you bringing that decrepit old man here? I will pull out every hair on his head!” And on and on it went. In any case, the elder was seasoned in such matters. He paid no attention to what he heard. Surely he must have said inwardly, “My Lord, now that You have brought me here, take care of this.” He went in, and she lunged at him to strangle him.

The elder gestured toward a chair, and it struck the window and flew back toward the wall. In any case, he took out his prayers—though from experience he already knew most of them by heart—and began to chant and read the exorcisms of John Chrysostom, Basil the Great, Cyprian, and others. After three quarters of an hour, with much screaming and convulsing, the demon departed. Now someone will ask—and the question naturally arises—did these people then become Orthodox Christians, after seeing the power of our clergy and our Church? Sadly, they did not. “You will not persuade me, even if you persuade me.” Nor did their leaders become Orthodox. Do they not see at the All-Holy Sepulchre that only the Orthodox receive the light of the Resurrection? Why do they not repent? Are they going to give orders to God?

When we see that, for two thousand years, Christ has given the light of the Resurrection only to the Orthodox—not to the Armenians, not to the Catholics or Augustinians, not to anyone else—how can we presume to give orders to God? Woe to us, woe to us! These are things that should make a person’s bones tremble. If only you could see what a blessing Orthodoxy possesses. Then you would understand what a mixed marriage means. “But she was beautiful; but he was handsome.” Then we will understand. Then we will understand what civil marriage means, which these gentlemen promote, and what automatic divorces will mean. Everything revolves around a moment of pleasure, and as soon as it is over, you are disgusted with yourself. Let anyone who can prove me wrong. Yet today the Greek people gamble recklessly with everything, and Orthodoxy is endangered by those who are Orthodox in name only.

Those who are genuine, who embody true Orthodoxy—the true Orthodox—are not in danger. And in reality, the Church is not in danger. Those in danger are the so-called Orthodox. All these people—whether they are called ministers, prime ministers, lawyers, prominent citizens, or whatever else—all are identified as Orthodox Christians on their identity cards, and woe to them tomorrow. We received the honor of being born Orthodox—or rather, from the hour of our birth we heard the Orthodox bell of the inn that is the Church of Christ. We heard it even from our mother’s womb. Understand what a great thing this is: Christ sends His Church to receive us with her prayers as soon as we are born.

Then she cleanses us from ancestral sin, baptizes us, and raises us to new life. After that, she nourishes us through the other Mystery I mentioned, Holy Communion. For when the life-giving side of our Christ was pierced, two streams flowed forth: water and blood. The water is Baptism, and the blood is Holy Communion, which sustains the soul reborn through Baptism. A person must keep all these things in mind. No other Church can bring these things together and give them to mankind. And if, in our human weakness, we sin, Christ has left us the Mystery of Mysteries.

It is the loving and merciful Mystery of metanoia—repentance—and confession, which makes a person fresh and clean again, like a little child. If he falls again, he can rise again. If he falls yet again, he can rise yet again. Even if he falls seventy-seven times in a day and rises again, he will still receive forgiveness. Let some other church come and tell us that it possesses these gifts. Who does? No one. They are all speaking falsely. You enter burdened and come out crushed even more. Only in an Orthodox confessional, and only before an Orthodox priest in his grease-stained cassock and worn epitrachelion, do you enter with three hundred tons on your back and, after your confession, emerge as light as a bird. You will be able...

...to testify to this from your own personal experience. I say it from my own life, and it cannot be otherwise, since the Mystery is the same—provided, of course, that the confession was sincere. Christ has heaped up all these gifts in the Orthodox Church alone, and He calls all people to come. Yet they do not want to come. People today do not want the Gospel of Christ—not even the Orthodox do—because it exposes their lawless way of life. Do you understand? If the Gospel of Christ were to say, “You may kill your children; you may take any man or woman you please, whenever you please. There is no need for virginity. There is no need for fasting. None of that is necessary. We want you just as you are,” you would hear applause. That is the kind of Gospel we are waiting for. But where was such freedom ever given to you?

You are fed up with all the “do nots” and “you shall nots.” Yet Christ does not water down His wine, despite those who say that, if He came today, He would go arm in arm with the spirit of the age and adapt Himself to the world’s supposed progress. What progress? The world has gone backward, not forward. It confuses progress with technological civilization. Technology consists of discoveries and the application of laws that already existed—laws created neither by my mother-in-law, nor by you, nor by anyone else. God created them. People have simply discovered certain laws, combined them, and produced certain results. But what does that have to do with spiritual reality? The spiritual world and Christ do not evolve. The spirit does not evolve. People make a grave mistake when they confuse material civilization and material progress with...

...spiritual progress. Spiritual reality remains the same. Have you changed bread? No. Have you changed water? No. Have you changed the sun? No. Have you changed oxygen? No. Have you changed sleep? No. Then what civilization have you created for me? What have you done? You discovered that two things combined produce a certain result. But those things already belong to God. Those laws are God’s. They belong to another; there is another Craftsman behind them. This is how a person should think and give thanks to God in prayer. Who has prayed in gratitude that he was not born with some grave defect? Who has prayed in gratitude that a priest stood over him—the same priest whom our tongues devour day and night? Who gives thanks that he had a mother to make the sign of the Cross over him? He had a mother and father who baptized him and did not leave him still possessed by demons. For every unbaptized person is under demonic dominion.

Even if he does not have demons through his own deliberate choices, he carries the demonic burden of ancestral sin; he bears that death. “For in Adam all sinned.” And this is what they are now seeking to bring upon Greek society and the family. For a civil marriage today, one not blessed by the Church...

...what will it produce? Will such a person go tomorrow to baptize his children? He thinks he has no need of it. If he believed in the Church, he would have gone to be crowned by the Church and to receive the Church’s blessing. Tomorrow he will neither bring his children to Holy Communion nor baptize them. And when you are dealing with someone unbaptized, you are dealing with someone under demonic influence. Before long, we will be shutting ourselves indoors from midday onward.

Look at what happens abroad, because they have no spiritual priests to drive the demons away, and people go and confess to those who can do nothing for them. You may tell me everything, but I am not the appointed person. I do not have the power or the grace from God to lift your burden. I can listen and say a few words to you, but nothing more. The clergy, however, have received from God the power to do this work. Who thanks God that we were born Greeks? Who thanks God for all those people who shed their blood so that this faith might be firmly established? When we spoke here earlier about Athanasius the Great, remember what I told you. For twenty years that man endured persecutions, dry wells, and prisons so that not even one iota would be added—so that homoousios, “consubstantial,” would not become homoiousios, “of similar essence.” Not one iota would be inserted, and it was not. Yet we treat it as though it means nothing. “Well, I suppose they are Christians too.”

“They are human beings; indeed, they are even better than we are.” The devil does not trouble them in the same way. It is the Orthodox whom he troubles. Go into any of the foreigners’ so-called churches: Protestant halls that they regard as churches, Roman Catholic churches filled with statues, and so on. Go wherever you wish. Go to a Jewish synagogue or meeting house. Go to the Muslims and the rest. There is the stillness of death. But enter an Orthodox Church, and from the candle counter at the entrance all the way into the holy altar, everything is seething. The parish wardens whisper and chatter. The chanters chew gum and watch to see which woman is coming in. Inside, the priest often grumbles at the altar servers, while other conversations are picked up by the microphones and broadcast for us to hear. We look to see who is entering; there is chatter and all the rest. This happens only in the Orthodox Church. Why?

Because every regiment of demons from the surrounding regions and from the whole world goes to the Orthodox Church. Once, an elder was descending from his hermitage to the city with his disciple. As they traveled, they passed through a village where there was a church, and the elder saw a single devil sitting on top of the church’s bell tower.

He said nothing. They went farther and came upon a hut beside the road. There, however, he saw a hundred demons surrounding the hut. The young disciple was puzzled. “What is happening here?” he wondered. So he said, “Geronta, may I have your blessing to ask you something?” “Yes, tell me.” “As we were coming down earlier, did you see that demon sitting on the church’s bell tower?” “I saw it.” “And do you see anything here?” “I see a whole crowd of demons.” “Then what is happening here? Why have they not gone to the church?” The elder replied, “No one in that church is praying. One devil can keep watch over all of them; there is no need for more. They do nothing in church. They go to show off their suits and light a candle as tall as themselves...”

“...though they may have devoured their daughter-in-law, their mother-in-law, or their neighbor with malice; though they may be embroiled in lawsuits, refuse to see the truth, have no children, refuse to fast, and so on. All of it amounts to nothing. One devil can manage all of them. But here lives a married couple who pray. A husband and wife live and pray in this hut. That is why you see so many demons here.” Yes, that is how it is. That is why Orthodoxy is attacked. Have you ever heard a Catholic priest being accused? Never. A Protestant? Never. Have you heard a Buddhist accused? Never. Or any of the Muslims? Never. Any imam? Never. Only the Orthodox Church. Orthodoxy is a thorn in the devil’s eye. That is why a person must know these things.

Once a person understands these things, he realizes that from the day he was baptized—when he spat at the devil and said, “I renounce you, your pomp, and your worship, and I unite myself to Christ”—he has been at war with the devil. We said no to him, and all who continue to say no to him are his enemies, and he treats them as enemies. When we have physical enemies, we make sure to keep a pistol or a knife in the house. But when we have a spiritual enemy, what do we do? What are our weapons? Do you go to Church? Do you receive Holy Communion? Do you fast? Do you have spiritual strength? Do you pray so that you can withstand the flaming arrows of Satan? Do you teach these things to your children? Do you teach others and remind them? What do you do? This is why he catches us asleep.

If I were an internist, a doctor, and took a spoon and pressed down your tongue with the back of it, I would see how many priests, how many bishops, and how many nuns in their cassocks you Orthodox Christians have devoured with your words. Perhaps no one here would prove innocent of criticizing the clergy. How can this be? And yet we think that they are to blame—they are at fault, not we ourselves. Do you know what our folk saying tells us? “If you do not praise your own house and keep it covered, it will collapse on top of you.” Yet we do not do this. We do not shelter our Church with our prayers. We do not offer children born of God to become priests. We do not. Instead, we make a child a doctor who performs abortions,

or an engineer who, within two months, has an apartment building, a limousine, and I do not know how many girlfriends. We make him a lawyer who sells out a case for money. We make him this, that, and the other. Of course, what I am saying is not absolute. There are also honorable people among lawyers, engineers, and those in every other profession. But we do see such things. Suppose you see a little boy taking milk cartons and turning them into censers, wrapping himself in a sheet, and chanting, “Holy God.” You do not encourage that child to become a priest, do you? No, you do not. You leave the priesthood to other people’s children, and then you—the respectable family that has no need of money—complain if that child, when he becomes a priest tomorrow, has to hold out his hand and ask for a few coins. You do not encourage him toward the priesthood, because you do not consider it an honor.

What greater honor could there be than to offer someone from your own household to the Church? Is there any greater honor? There is not.

An English admiral came here during the Occupation, while the late Papandreou was alive, and went to Piraeus. Papandreou addressed this foreign admiral there. He also knew his family, which included distinguished people, and said to him: “You should consider yourself fortunate among your family, because fate”—for Papandreou himself did not believe in God—“fate has granted you the privilege of coming here, to this land of freedom and enlightenment, and of being the first to set foot here after the liberation.” He added other words of the kind the late Papandreou knew how to speak. When the admiral replied, he said: “Thank you very much, Mr. President, for your kind words. But you should know that in our family the highest distinction belongs to one of our brothers, who is a priest.” And what kind of priest? A Protestant.

A Protestant! Satan can seize him and drag him through forty furnaces. Yet he was a Protestant minister, and still the admiral regarded it as an honor and said that this brother held the highest distinction in their family. Do you understand what awaits us? Therefore, guard as the apple of your eye what the love and providence of God have entrusted to us—both right faith and right conduct. Then we may hope that one day we shall meet Him, the great High Priest. This is what I pray for one another and for all. Amen.

Αυτό είναι το θέμα. Πώς κάνεις όλα αυτά τα άλλα; Πού είναι τα παιδιά σου; Πώς κάνεις όλα αυτά τα πράγματα; Γιατί δεν νηστεύεις;

Πώς θα δικαιολογηθούν αυτά; Πού είναι οι προσευχές σου; Κάθε πότε εξομολογείσαι; Κάθε πότε κοινωνείς; Πώς θα δικαιολογήσεις αυτά; Μπείτε σε μια εκκλησία μέσα. Ορθόδοξοι, είναι χίλιοι Ορθόδοξοι. Θα προσέλθουν 10-20 μικρά να κοινωνήσουν και 4-5 μεγάλοι. Οι άλλοι οι Ορθόδοξοι τι κάνουνε; Δεν κοινωνούν. Γιατί δεν κοινωνούνε; Γιατί είναι άγγελοι;

Είναι, λοιπόν, δυνατόν; Εβάλατε τη νηστεία, κατ' αρχάς, στο σπίτι σας; Είναι η νηστεία στο σπίτι; Και όχι νηστεία μόνο βρωματική, τυρί κρέας, αλλά και σαρκική. Και λόγο και μάτι. Να κλείσετε την τηλεόραση, να της βάλετε πέμπτη πομπή μπροστά. Η Εκκλησία, αν θα πάτε, θα δείτε ότι έβαλε πένθος. Μαυροφόρεσε. Παπάδες, άμα τους δείτε, θα τους δείτε τώρα να μη φορούν λευκά, ειμή μόνο Σάββατο και Κυριακή. Όλες τις άλλες ημέρες φορούν άλλα ρούχα, μελανά, που υπενθυμίζουν πένθος. Τι άλλαξε στο σπίτι το δικό μας; Καθαρά Δευτέρα πού πήγατε; Πετάξατε τον αετό για το εγγονάκι. Ο Αδάμ και η Εύα ήσαν έξω και κλαίγανε και χτυπάγανε το κεφάλι τους. Και εμείς είμαστε απόγονοι του Αδάμ και της Εύας. Τι τρόπο πολιτευθήκαμε;

Ποιος αντέχει να δεχτεί έλεγχο από τον Χριστόν, τον Εσταυρωμένον, τον Ναζαρινόν; Ποιος αντέχει να παρουσιαστεί η Παναγία; Ποια μάνα, ποια κόρη, να της μιλήσει με τη γλώσσα τη δικιά της;

Μια καρέκλα έκανε έτσι ο γέρων και χτύπησε στο παράθυρο και ήρθε προς τον τοίχο. Εν πάση περιπτώσει, βγάζει — τα ξέρετε άλλωστε τα περισσότερα απ' έξω αυτός, από πείρα — και άρχισε, λοιπόν, να ψάλλει και να διαβάζει τους εξορκισμούς του Ιωάννου του Χρυσοστόμου, του Μεγάλου Βασιλείου, του Κυπριανού κλπ. Αποτέλεσμα, έπειτα από τρία τέταρτα, κράξαν και πολλά σπαράξαν, το δαιμόνιο έφυγε. Θα πει κανείς τώρα — γιατί ανεβαίνει αυτομάτως το ερώτημα — άραγε να έγιναν χριστιανοί αυτοί, εφόσον είδαν τη δύναμη του κλήρου μας και της Εκκλησίας μας; Δεν έγιναν, δυστυχώς. «Ού με πείσεις, καν με πείσεις». Όπως δεν έγιναν και οι μεγάλοι των. Δεν βλέπουν στον Πανάγιο Τάφο ότι το φως της Αναστάσεως το παίρνουν μόνο οι Ορθόδοξοι; Γιατί δεν μετανοούν; Θα διατάξουν τον Θεό;

να το ομολογήσετε από ατομικό πειραματισμό αυτό. Εγώ το λέγω από τη ζωή μου και δεν μπορεί να συμβαίνει διαφορετικά, εφόσον το μυστήριο είναι το ίδιο και εφόσον έγινε βέβαια ειλικρινής εξομολόγηση. Όλα αυτά τα δώρα τα έχει επισωρεύσει στην Ορθόδοξον Εκκλησία και μόνον και καλεί όλους τους ανθρώπους να έρθουν. Και εν τούτοις δεν θέλουν να έρθουν. Δεν το θέλουν το Ευαγγέλιο του Χριστού σήμερα οι άνθρωποι, ούτε οι Ορθόδοξοι. Γιατί τους ελέγχει τον παράνομο βίο τους. Καταλάβατε; Εάν το Ευαγγέλιο του Χριστού πει «μπορεί να σκοτώνεις τα παιδιά σου, μπορεί να παίρνεις όποιον θέλεις και να παίρνεις όποια θέλεις, ό,τι ώρα θέλεις. Δεν χρειάζεται παρθενία. Δεν χρειάζεται νηστεία. Δεν χρειάζονται αυτά. Εσένα θέλουμε», θα ακούεις χειροκροτήματα. Αμ, τέτοιο Ευαγγέλιο περιμένουμε. Πού σου δώσε ο καιρός;

άνθρωποι είναι, μάλιστα είναι καλύτεροι και από εμάς. Δεν τους πειράζει ο διάβολος αυτούς, είναι δικοί του, τους έχει στη μέσα τσέπη. Τον Ορθόδοξο πειράζει. Πηγαίνετε σε οποιαδήποτε λεγόμενη εκκλησία των ξένων, σε προτεσταντικές αίθουσες που τις έχουν ως εκκλησίες, σε παπικές που τις έχουν γεμάτο αγάλματα κλπ. Πηγαίνετε όπου θέλετε. Πηγαίνετε σε συναγωγή Εβραίων, σε χάβρα Εβραίων. Πηγαίνετε στους άλλους, τους Μωαμεθανούς, και λοιπά. Νεκρική ησυχία. Πηγαίνετε σε Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία: από το παγκάρι που θα μπείτε μέχρι κάτω μες στο ιερό βράζει το παν. Ψιλή συζήτηση και κουβέντα οι επίτροποι. Οι ψαλτάδες τρώνε τσίχλες και κοιτάνε ποια θα μπει μέσα. Ο παπάς μέσα γρινιάζει πολλές φορές με τα παιδιά και άλλα συζητούνται και ακούμε από τα μεγάφωνα. Εμείς κοιτάζουμε ποιος θα μπει, συζητήσεις και τα τι αυτά. Μόνο στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία γίνεται αυτό. Γιατί;
