Summary

The Nativity is presented as the foundation of the Christian feasts, beginning with the Annunciation at Nazareth and Christ’s manifestation at Bethlehem. Melchizedek and Jacob’s ladder prefigure Christ and the Theotokos, through whom God descends to humanity and humanity is raised toward God. The lecture concludes that the crucified and risen Jesus of Nazareth is the promised Messiah whose empty tomb guarantees the resurrection of His people.

Your Eminence, reverend fathers, beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, as you have heard, I too have found myself here with you—not because I desired it, and not because I brought it about. Rather, I want to believe that behind this entire effort there is Someone else, who directs all things and, invisibly and in His own way, brings everything together and works all things for the benefit of our souls. Therefore, glory, honor, thanksgiving, and worship belong to our Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you. All other words are merely human—our own.

They have their place when the subject concerns the immortal soul of man. In any case, this evening I would like, in a sense, to be somewhat contemporary—somewhat relevant, as we might say. What occupies most people, some knowingly and others unknowingly, is the great event of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. The most blessed city ever to receive this message is Nazareth. There, for the first time, God, in the person of the Theotokos,

descends to man; and then comes Bethlehem, where He was finally manifested to mankind. The Nativity of Christ is a great mystery. According to the divine John Chrysostom, it is the mother city of Christianity. It is the mother of nearly all the other feasts. There would have been no Circumcision without the Nativity, no Baptism without the Nativity, no Crucifixion, no death, no Resurrection, no Ascension, no Pentecost, and we would not be awaiting the Second Coming. The starting point, then, is the Nativity. It is a great event that people must understand.

And because this event was so great, God took care to prefigure it, prophesy it, and foreshadow it in the world, so that people might both take comfort and wait in expectation. In recent times, under Western influence, Christian homes have also come to know Christmas trees. Westerners, being empty of Christ, took hold of trees. We would never have put such things in our homes if we had Christ in our souls. But unfortunately, most of us are also empty, and so we try to fill that emptiness with material things. Thank you!

Since the tree is here before us—this Christmas tree—suppose we were to shake it and discover where its roots lie. Where do you think we would find them? Do you know where this tree is planted? In Paradise. God first spoke of this Christmas tree when two human beings and the devil stood before Him. The first good news, the first annunciation of Christ’s coming into the world, was given in Eden.

What happened? Satan led Eve astray, and then the two of them led Adam astray. God set the devil, Eve, and Adam before Him, and spoke to each one in turn. Among the things He said to the devil, He spoke of the Nativity. He spoke of God’s coming into the world. He spoke of a strange conception and a strange birth—even then. And here are the words we read in Genesis 3:15: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and the woman’s seed.” He will break your head; He will crush your head, while you will bite His heel. He is speaking of the Nativity. These are

elements of the Nativity. He says that the woman’s seed will crush the devil’s head for what he has done. But does a woman have seed? That is precisely what is strange here. Seed belongs to the man, not to the woman. The man begets; the woman gives birth. We will hear this next Sunday, but we do not pay attention to such things. The steamroller of habit keeps us from going deeper. It says, “Abraham begot Isaac.” Really? Did Sarah not give birth to him? “Isaac begot Jacob.” Really? Did Rebekah not give birth to him? “Jacob begot Judah and his brothers.” No—did Rachel not give birth? Help me here. Thank you very much.

Back there, He spoke of the woman’s seed. These are mysterious things. From that time onward, He proclaimed the Gospel to the first human beings: the Lord would avenge what had been done. Of course, much time was needed. And Paul writes in Galatians 4:4: “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman”—not of a man—“born under the Law, to redeem those who were under the Law.” Does he not say these things? He does. Strange things are happening here. Satan remembers this. Satan holds this threat in his mind.

About four and a half thousand years passed—approximately 4,800 years—without this action being carried out against him. But then Isaiah came onto the scene, seven or eight hundred years before Christ, and wrote in chapter 7, verse 14: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and you shall call His name Emmanuel.” Ah, so that is how it will be! He has not forgotten; He has not forgotten. God will carry it out; He does not speak in jest. But the fullness of time had to come, as Paul says. And according to the Hebrew calendar, do you know how many years passed from the time God spoke the promise until it was fulfilled? 5,508 years. Do not listen when scholars add and subtract zeros. Holy Scripture says 5,508 years.

So the matter begins far back in time: one day, Someone would be born of a woman, not of a man, and, as I will explain further on, He would avenge the wrong done by the serpent, the devil. Indeed, it is said that Eve, who was the first to hear this, thought that she herself would give birth to the avenger. That is why she named her first child Cain, meaning “acquisition,” because she believed she had acquired the avenger. But she had acquired nothing. That was one foolish mistake. The woman was someone else. Yes, God was looking ahead some 5,500 years. She was the one who had been typologically signified, foreshadowed, and prophesied. And she, in turn, after God, received the place of highest honor.

If the images, symbols, and prophecies concerning our Christ could be weighed, as we say in everyday speech, I would dare to say that there are more concerning our Most Holy Theotokos than concerning Christ Himself, because she is an equally important person in the great event in which she played this role. So this tree has existed since then—the tree that we have made into a Christmas tree today—and its roots are in Paradise, just as the roots of Great Friday and the crushing of the serpent are there. For the serpent was crushed on Golgotha. There, on the human level, the serpent bit Christ’s heel, and Christ broke its head. There the serpent’s head was crushed; there this prophecy was fulfilled.

As you know, Satan watched until he had Christ raised upon the Cross, intending to remove Him as a righteous man, just as the Wisdom of Solomon portrays so beautifully in its opening chapters: “Let us condemn him to a shameful death, that we may test his gentleness, for he claims to belong to God,” and so forth. But when they raised Him up and saw all creation beginning to protest—the sun growing dark, the tombs opening, the rocks splitting, and so forth—they cried, “Come down.” “I will not come down. First I will break your head, and then I will descend.” That is what we have here. Satan did not know that behind the Crucifixion stood the Resurrection, and that was his downfall. He thought he would remove Christ as merely a righteous man, because he could not gain mastery over Him.

“He keeps away from our ways as from uncleanness,” says the wise Solomon. So Satan put Him on the Cross without knowing what would emerge from behind the Cross, and there he met his downfall. Our Church’s liturgical order presents this beautifully. It calls this image to mind: while “Christ Is Risen” is being sung in the Orthodox Church, the clergy, as you may have seen, come out holding a cross with the image of the Resurrection on its reverse side. Our clergy do not know where to place the candle, so they put it in front. No—the Resurrection is behind the Cross. The reverse side bearing the Resurrection should be visible, with a red ribbon tied around it. They come out and show it, as it were, to Satan: “Here is where you fell. You seized what you could see and were brought down by what you could not see.”

The divine John Chrysostom says it most beautifully to him in his Catechetical Homily: “You took earth and encountered Heaven.” How could you understand such things, you great fool? In the same way, Ignatius the God-bearer deals with him wonderfully in his Epistle to the Philadelphians; he tears him to pieces. He puts Satan to shame, though Satan presents himself as being so wise. That is where Satan fell—he fell through his pride. That is where this prophecy was fulfilled. It was fulfilled on Golgotha. And this is very encouraging for us. I would also like to offer you a brief parallel. Saint Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain says the following about Satan: in order to catch Adam on his hook,

Satan used a God as bait, saying to him, “You will become God,” and he caught him. But now Christ, who is God, in order to catch this Beast, Satan, used a tiny fish as bait. He presented Christ as a little fish. Satan did not take Christ to be God—not fully. For if he had known with absolute certainty that Christ was God, he would not have crucified Him; he would have revered Him. So he went to swallow that little fish. “What is the son of Mary? He is nothing.” He even heard Him on Great Thursday, in His agony, say, “Let this cup pass from Me,” and so forth. Yet He was God; He did not fear death. He went forward to meet it.

With a tiny fish, He caught a lion; He caught a beast. This, Saint Nikodemos says, is the wisdom of God. He says these things to humble Satan and show that he is not as clever as we imagine—provided, of course, that we ourselves are Christians. So back there lies the beginning of the whole matter: the first promise, the first prophecy, reminding man that one day it would take flesh and bones; it would come to pass. A woman would give birth. And how beautifully! Of course, this is a little difficult for us to understand. Someone asks, “How could a virgin give birth?” Listen the day after tomorrow, or read calmly at home, the Gospel for next Sunday, the Sunday before the Nativity of Christ. It begins with the very words I just mentioned: “Abraham begot Isaac,” and so on. As it lists all the generations,

David and the others—fourteen, fourteen, and fourteen—it finally reaches Joseph, the man who was regarded as Mary’s husband, the man regarded as Mary’s husband. And there it says, “of whom Christ was born.” Wait a moment, Matthew. Until now, the men have been begetting, and now you come to this point and say, “of whom Christ was born”? Here the woman gives birth. What is happening now? The listener is perplexed. Immediately, the grace of the Holy Spirit comes and supplies the explanation: “Wait; do not be scandalized. Let me tell you how the woman came to give birth here. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was in this manner.” That is how it was. And how was it? “When Mary had been betrothed, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.”

That is how it was—yes, indeed. The birth was not natural, nor was the conception natural, and so forth, as these things ordinarily take place among men. Here everything changes; ordinary reckoning no longer applies. Read these things when you come to them, because they concern us. The Gospel says, “of whom He was born,” and then explains how the conception took place. Do you remember what our Most Holy Theotokos said to the Archangel? “How shall this be, since I do not know a man?” How can this happen? I have no husband. Where God is at work, there is no place for asking how. If you had had a husband, you would have accomplished nothing. You would merely have brought one more human being into the world.

And he too would have been in need of salvation.

Have you ever read what Saint Gregory Palamas says about this? “If,” he says, “the Savior had been born of a human father, He would not have been a new man,” a new creation, “nor the Savior of men from their sins.” He would not have been free from sin. He too would have been merely one more human being. He became man, but not in every respect in the same manner as we do. Have you read what Hebrews chapter 2 says? “Since the children have partaken of flesh and blood.” This is a passage from the epistle reading for the blessing of water. Since the children—that is, human beings—were made of flesh and blood, He too

“He likewise shared in them, so that through death He might destroy the one who had the power of death, that is, the devil.” Likewise, but not in every respect. As man, Christ has a mother but no father; and as God, He has the Father but no mother. Therefore He is without father, without mother, and without genealogy. He is the One whom Melchizedek prefigured. Read Genesis, chapter 14, where Melchizedek suddenly appears in the world. Who begot him? Nothing is said. The beginning of his days? Nothing. Who were his parents? Nothing. Who were his father and mother? Nothing. When did he die? Nothing. He has neither beginning nor end, and he was a type of Christ.

Indeed, Paul included this in the Epistle to the Hebrews in order to convince his own countrymen, the Jews. All that surrounds this matter offers us such beautiful truths. They are so refreshing to the soul and to a person’s faith, but we have not devoted ourselves to studying them. Someone may ask, “Is the coming of Christ really so important?” It is the one and only matter of supreme importance. Nothing in the world is more important. Why? Because man could not be saved. He could not be saved.

The Apostle and Evangelist Luke, the author of Acts, records in chapter 4, verse 12, that Peter said this: “There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” There is no one who can save us except the One whose name is Jesus. Why? For the following reason. This is also mentioned in one of the prayers of the Holy Proskomedia. As the priest takes out the Lamb and the other portions, the prayer says, among other things: “Neither an angel nor an archangel saved us from the curse of the Law.” Neither an angel nor an archangel could save us. And the reason is simple: What did man need? What was his sickness? What was his affliction? We must know that in order to find the remedy. What was man suffering from? What happened to man through disobedience? What came upon him through disobedience—life? No, death. Death. Do you know what death means? Death means being cut off from the source of life. This chandelier is alive with light because it is connected to its source. The one beside it is dead because it is cut off from that source. My dear friends, through disobedience man

died by half. Read the parable of the Good Samaritan carefully. The man who fell among thieves was left half dead. Man has two kinds of life. His body lives as long as the soul is present, and his soul lives as long as God is present. A person who has no living, organic relationship with Christ, with God, is a living corpse, a walking cemetery. Some people therefore speak very wrongly when they are asked, “How are you? How are the children?” and answer, “Fine, fine, Glory to God.” What is fine about it, when your daughter came home in the morning and your son was out until dawn? I do not know where the son is coming from, nor where the rest of you are coming from.

Can things be called good when you are living corpses, cut off from Christ? The person whom we ordinarily call dead is, strictly speaking, dead only in the body. If, for example, I die—since perhaps you do not have time to wait—if I die now and fall down there, and someone asks you, “Who is this? What is this?” what should you say, if you wish to be precise? “These are the remains of Panagopoulos”—his mortal remains. If you were to see my soul, what should you say? “This is the spirit of Panagopoulos.” This is the spirit, and this is the body that remains. Does the body live? Yes, as long as the soul is within it. And the spirit lives and

has a relationship with God, and it can stand before God, so long as it has a relationship with the Spirit, a relationship with God. The two together are Panagopoulos. This is his body, and this is his spirit. Together they are Panagopoulos, and this whole person is the one Christ will raise. When your body is separated from your soul, what remains is the body; it is only a remainder, not the whole person. The whole human person is soul and body. In the same way, man was cut off from God. You disobeyed, and you were cut off. You are a living corpse. This is what happened to the first man, Adam. Through disobedience Adam died spiritually. Bodily, he died 930 years later. There are many living corpses among us.

Remember what Christ said to the elder brother, concerning the prodigal younger brother: “This brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” Yet that younger brother had been feasting with his companions. Precisely. Away from his home, away from his father’s house, away from the Church of God, as we would say today, man is a living corpse. Do you remember what Christ said to a young man who asked permission to go and bury his father? “You shall not go.” “My father has died; who will bury him?” “Let the dead bury their own dead.” There are well-dressed dead men in your village who will bury your father. You, come and follow Me. Did He say it or not? And through John He wrote to the bishop mentioned in the Apocalypse: “You have a name that you are alive.”

But you are dead. Paul writes that widows who do not preserve purity after being widowed are not truly alive, but dead. Does he write this or not? What man lost on the paths of sin, then, was life, and death entered in place of life. Who possesses life?

No one except God. He is Life in Himself, the source of life. The angels do not possess life in themselves; they participate in life. There is a connection. Is this chandelier itself the light? No, it participates in the light. The light comes from the generator. This is precisely why what I told you earlier applies: neither an angel nor an archangel, but the Lord Himself saved us from the curse of the Law. This great thanksgiving ought to rise from our souls with tears: “My God, what have You done for us!” And even now He offers Himself daily and gives this life to those who desire to encounter Him.

There, on the solea before this beautiful gate, He leads us toward the Kingdom of Heaven. This is why He Himself had to come. He is Life in Himself. Could the Godhead meet humanity directly? No. So what happened? The Godhead clothed Himself in humanity, so that He could speak with man and offer Himself to man, making life accessible to him. Christianity is not a matter of philanthropy, nor merely of good works. It is a matter of life, and whoever has no relationship with Christ has no life. Have you ever reflected on why the Cross is called life-giving, and why His side is called life-giving?

Why His tomb is called life-giving, why He is called the Bread of Life, why His cup is called the cup of life, and why the whole message concerns life? Whoever has no relationship with Christ has no life. “You have a name that you are alive, but you are dead,” He says to that bishop I mentioned earlier.

This, I repeat, is why God Himself came into the world. The ladder by which God descended into the world is the one Jacob saw in his dream, and it is the Most Holy Theotokos; the ladder by which man ascends to God is Christ. One thing is certain: the Most Holy Theotokos, through whom God descended, and Christ, through whom man ascended. Apart from this ladder, there is no salvation. There is no salvation by works, no salvation by oneself, and no salvation through man. There is salvation only through Christ.

Let me say this as the crowning point of these reflections: Christ is not merely the giver of work or its reward; He is the Giver of Life. Because of His great love, He came into the world. Therefore we must come to know this great event, this experience essential to the world. God prefigured it through images and types and foretold it through prophecy, so that Christ could be clearly identified. “We have found Him,” Andrew said, “we have found Him.” Whom have we found? The One of whom it was truly written—Jesus of Nazareth. “We have found Him. I had read about Him, waited for Him, and sought Him.” If you read the histories of the nations, you will see that, apart from Judaism, they were all awaiting a Messiah.

They were waiting for someone, expecting someone to help them. The soul yearned, searched, sought, and waited. Therefore every means of communication, as we would say today, was brought into service to inform the world and prepare it for this great event. In a few days, this same Christ, this Jesus, will grant us the grace to commemorate and celebrate the event of His Nativity. Yet He had a history before His birth. Every other person, however great or insignificant, has a history extending from the day of birth to the day of repose.

His history did not begin on the day He was born of the Theotokos. It began from the foundation of the world, from that first moment I mentioned earlier, when we see Him foretold as the seed of the woman. For it was already known how Christ would be born: of a Virgin; where He would be born: in Bethlehem; and when He would be born. Three details identify Him unmistakably: He would be born of a Virgin, He would be born in Judea, and He would be born, according to Daniel, after sixty-nine weeks of years—that is, 483 years after the decree to rebuild Jerusalem following its destruction. And the date was fulfilled exactly. Everyone needed to know this, provided they were willing to know it; for when a person does not wish to believe, there is great darkness, but when he does, there is abundant light concerning the very same matter. Thus the history preceding Jesus makes Him clearer and identifies Him unmistakably. No one can tell us that Christ did not come. Christ is a historical person, and even here in England they write

the year 1981, at this very moment.

How can England refer to Christ and write the year 1981? From what point is it counting?

From the founding of Rome? From the creation of the world? No, from Jesus, the crucified Nazarene. He is the clearly identified founder of the one true faith. The others are religions and human constructions. Perhaps what I am saying troubles you, as though I wished to claim a monopoly for Orthodoxy. No, that is not what I am doing. I am speaking the truth, and I am obliged to do so. And I believe I can also help you consider this carefully. Today, according at least to statistics from abroad, there are two thousand doctrines, movements, and heresies in circulation.

Let me give you one more example. Recently, a survey was conducted abroad listing all religions. It even included a religion with only two members—the founder and one believer. Yet the Orthodox faith was not mentioned. Do you hear? This is warfare. Why such warfare? Because Orthodoxy is the truth. It is the truth. There is another way a person should examine this, which I mentioned to those of you who heard me speak on the feast of Saint Spyridon. I spoke about the true faith of Saint Spyridon the Great and his connection with the First Ecumenical Council, and I said that all the so-called

leaders of religions—whether they are called popes or Protestants, Calvin or Luther, Russell, Buddha, Zoroaster, or Muhammad—have gone to their graves, and we shall find them still bound in their burial shrouds. Only the tomb of Jesus, the crucified Nazarene, is empty. We believe in this Christ, not merely in someone named Jesus; there have been many men named Jesus. We believe in the One whom the angel proclaimed to the Myrrh-bearing Women. What did he tell them? “Jesus the crucified Nazarene is not here.” It is in Him that I believe.

Not just any Jesus, but Jesus the Crucified, Jesus of Nazareth, who rose and left His tomb empty. The Author of life has left an empty tomb. This is a promise to us that our own tomb will also be left empty: He will raise us. As the firstborn from the dead, He conquered death. “O death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” as Isaiah says. And John Chrysostom, the golden-mouthed, takes up these words and proclaims them to us on the night of the Resurrection, if we will only condescend to remain with the poor Nazarene for His Resurrection. For unfortunately, even there we put into practice the words of David that came before: “Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered; and let those who hate Him flee from before His face.” Picture it even now. And then come the words explaining why: “So shall sinners perish from before the face of God.” They flee.

Christ is risen! As long as He is still inside, we remain. But now that the “is risen” has ended—my child, if only we understood what we were doing! People think they have received Christ simply because they have taken the candle, and then they go off, letting the wind blow it out, intending to make a cross on the door so that the devil cannot enter. On that day, it is John whose feast we have celebrated who is supposedly within us. Such is the effect the feast has on us! And it is not only the tomb of our Leader that is empty—the tomb of the Author of Life—but also the tomb of His Mother. The tomb of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) in Gethsemane is empty. Let all the other leaders come and show us an empty tomb.

Over the course of the centuries, the Lord makes Him unmistakably identifiable, because we know in advance what He is to suffer. If I were to list even some of these things for you, you would shudder. Yet we simply stand unmoved. Isaiah, eight hundred years before Christ, writes like a historian describing the events of Golgotha: “He was numbered with the transgressors.” He sees the two thieves. He gives no vague form or uncertain detail. What was it like? Imagine Isaiah in those days saying, “He was led as a sheep to the slaughter.” What could be more fitting? A sheep may be led away for its shepherd to shear it: he takes its wool, but he does not take its life.

And Christ was crucified, but they did not take His life. They took His body—His wool, as it were—but they did not take His life. “His burial was with the rich.” Isaiah saw Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea tending to Him at the tomb. Consider the whole matter, because it contains not only prophecies but also images and prefigurations. Consider Isaac, whom his father goes to sacrifice. What is this? Abraham sacrifices his only-begotten son, and the Father sacrifices the Only-Begotten. Where did Abraham offer his only-begotten son, and where did God offer the Only-Begotten? On Mount Moriah. Do you know what Moriah is?

Surely you do, of course.

Eighteen hundred years before Christ. If you could go back there in your mind, you would see Isaac climbing Moriah with the wood upon his shoulders, while his father prepares to sacrifice him upon the very wood that Isaac himself carried. Then come forward eighteen hundred years and see Jesus carrying His own Cross, His own wood, upon which He is sacrificed. If you go to Golgotha today, on the neighboring summit, only fifty meters away, is the place of Abraham’s sacrifice. Fifteen meters from there stands an olive-like tree which, according to tradition, has been preserved since that time. It is said to be the very tree that was there when Abraham raised

the knife to cut off his son’s head, and the angel cried out, “Do not lay your hand upon the child.” For if you slaughter him, it will accomplish nothing. His blood can accomplish nothing. Leave him unslain; the type you have enacted is enough, for it was the type that we needed. I do not want you to slaughter the child. Abraham turned back toward the place from which the voice came, and Holy Scripture says that he saw a ram caught and held fast by its horns in that tree. Do you know what that tree is called? Sabek. And do you know what that means? The wood of forgiveness. I have My own Lamb, who will be crucified upon the wood of the Cross. That is enough. This alone should have led mankind to pay attention. Then consider Joseph the All-Comely, who is in every respect a type of Christ. Open Genesis and read from chapter 37 through chapter 41.

Read what happened. What do we see? His father sent him to his brothers. But instead of receiving him—just as it is said of Christ, “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him”—they sold him. And where did they place him? In an empty pit, it says, an empty pit with nothing in it. Where did they place Christ? In the tomb, which, if I am not mistaken, was likewise empty when they laid Him there. What happened next? Joseph was sold. Who sold him? Judah, his brother. Who sold Christ? Judas sold Him. And where did Joseph end up afterward? In prison, because he would not yield to the sinful desire of Potiphar’s wife. In prison he found himself between two men, Pharaoh’s chief cupbearer and chief baker—between two offenders.

He interpreted their dreams and told them: “In three days, you will return to serving wine to Pharaoh, but you will be hung upon a tree, and the birds will eat your flesh.” And that is exactly what happened. One was saved, and the other perished. Christ was on Golgotha between two criminals: one was saved, and the other perished. And do you know what is said at the end? After all this had happened, and after Joseph had interpreted the dreams, Pharaoh raised him to royal authority. He placed him upon a chariot and led him throughout Egypt to present him to the people. Then he said: “I am Pharaoh. Without your command, no one shall lift his hand.” Joseph would govern. And afterward Christ comes and says, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.”

Today, in plain language, Christ governs everything we see. It is not God the Father who exercises this judgment and ministry directly; Christ does. Through Baptism, He forgives sins. Through Holy Confession, He forgives sins committed after Baptism. He is the One who gives His Body and Blood. And when a person comes to his senses, He can change even the robber’s destiny. He will raise us; He will judge us; He will present us to God—everything is in His hands. If a person studied only these two figures, Isaac and Joseph, he would see the life and Passion of Christ. That is why our Holy Church places the commemoration of Joseph the All-Comely on Great and Holy Monday: “We commemorate Joseph the All-Comely.” As we enter the week of the Passion, Joseph is the figure who

first stands before us as a type of Christ. Read Joseph’s life, and you will understand Christ’s life. But are these the only examples? Allow me to call to mind—as far as my memory permits—how many other things surround the person of Christ, all confirming His coming. The things that would happen first were written beforehand. The coming of the Forerunner was proclaimed in advance, and so it was. Malachi writes of it, and Isaiah writes of it as well: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness,” and again, “The ox knows its owner.” The prophet also writes that afterward He would come among human beings and share their life.

He came and lived among us through the Theotokos. Isaiah writes that His coming would be the coming of God among men: “Emmanuel”—God with us, God among us. It is also written in the Psalms that He would become an object of hatred among the people, as the sixty-eighth Psalm says. It is written that He would be betrayed by a friend, also in the Psalms, in the fifty-fourth Psalm. It is written that He would be sold for thirty pieces of silver—thirty pieces of silver. The Prophet Zechariah writes this, and Matthew repeats it. It is written that He would endure humiliation and abasement at the hands of men, and finally that they would strike Him upon the cheeks. Isaiah writes all this in chapter fifty-three.

He would be led like a sheep to the slaughter, as I told you earlier. He would suffer thirst, and in His thirst they would give Him gall and vinegar. They would pierce His hands and feet. He would be crucified among criminals. He would begin His preaching from the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali. He would enter Jerusalem triumphantly upon the colt of a donkey. He is unmistakably identified. At His death, nature itself would mourn, for Amos, seven hundred and fifty years before Christ, wrote that darkness would fall at high noon; and darkness did fall at high noon during the Crucifixion of Jesus. And I do not know whether you are aware that our own Saint Dionysius the Areopagite, who was then in Egypt, wrote in his journal: “Either God is suffering, or the whole world is perishing.” In other words, we are lost—do you understand? And when Paul came to Athens and spoke at the Areopagus, Dionysius met him...

He came to understand the events of the Cross and became a bishop. He recognized those very events, and it was encouraging that he was the first to believe, together with Damaris and all the others mentioned in chapter seventeen of Acts. It was also written that they would cast lots for His tunic. All these things belong to His prehistory. He is the One who was awaited. Yet God’s work of preparation was carried out not only through the prophecies, but also through the philosophers. Of course, the philosophers offered only fragments of light, while the prophets cast a great beam of light and supplied details, writing as though they were historians. Nevertheless,

I will tell you a few things that those of you who read may already have encountered. Solon, for example, says that one day, amid divided humanity, the bodiless Divinity will take flesh. This Divinity will bring deliverance from the passions. I will give it to you in paraphrase: this bodiless God will be hung by an ungrateful people, the Jews, and will willingly endure all the sufferings. Do you know what Socrates says? “We would remain asleep forever unless God, caring for us...” We would always remain asleep unless God took pity on us and sent someone to set us free and show us the Word. And that is not all. Plato says:

“A righteous man, though he has committed no injustice, will be scourged, beaten, and finally crucified,” in his work Laws and Republic. Do you see where this brings us? It is not only prophecy. I am not asking you simply to take my word for it. There are also the oracles, such as those of the Sibyl. Read whatever you wish; you will not find such things elsewhere. Read the life of Saint Catherine and see what testimony she drew from the philosophers, silencing the one hundred and fifty learned men. She spoke to them from their own books and from the sayings of their own gods, showing that their gods spoke about the very person in whom she believed: Jesus. We see, then, a universal mobilization. Even the devil himself comes and speaks about Christ. Even he is pressed into service.

God carried out a work of preparation throughout all humanity, so that everyone would have some awareness that something was about to happen. Listen specifically to the words of one Sibyl, which Saint Catherine cites: “In the latter times He will come upon this much-divided earth. Without sin, He will be born in the flesh—the flesh of the tireless Divinity. By the wounds of His incurable sufferings He will loose corruption. Envy will arise against Him from an unbelieving people, and He will be hung on high as one condemned to death. Then the earth will tremble, and the great God, having died, will rise on the third day.” His name, she says, bears four vowels and two consonants.

That is what His name will contain: four vowels and two consonants. And the numerical value is given precisely: eight units, eight tens, and eight hundreds. Search it out, she says, and understand the last things from the first. In other words, she says that the Son of God will come to earth and put on flesh, becoming like mortal men. His name will contain four vowels and two consonants, and the full numerical value will be exactly eight units, eight tens, and eight hundreds. Otherwise, someone might say that this was merely a coincidence. What other names do we have with four vowels and two consonants?

To make it exact, she says that His name will bear the number 888.

If we write the name out in Greek, its letters give that number. Let no one foolishly try to substitute another name.

And there is something else astonishing. When our Christ foretold His Passion, and the Greeks came seeking Him, He rejoiced and said, “Now the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” The sight of the Greeks was truly very encouraging, and at the same time a great honor for them. What else does Christ honor? “I am the Alpha and the Omega.” What are Alpha and Omega? They are the beginning and the end of the Greek alphabet. He says, “I am the Alpha and the Omega.” Does any other alphabet in the world have Alpha and Omega? And what does the Greek alphabet reveal? The name Jesus, it says, has eight units, eight tens, and eight hundreds.

The Greek alphabet, from alpha to omega, contains eight units, eight tens, and eight hundreds. And it has twenty-four letters.

Alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, stigma, zeta, eta: eight units. Then iota, kappa, lambda, mu, nu, xi, omicron, pi: eight tens. Then rho, sigma, tau, upsilon, phi, chi, psi, omega: eight hundreds. Do you understand? What remarkable precision in this numbering! This is why these things were set forth. It is impossible for a well-disposed person to study all that had been prepared beforehand—through the philosophers, through the prophets, through the Sibyls, and even through the devil himself—and fail to understand. And there is another part of the story.

The Gospel was also written in Greek so that it might be preached in Greek. Who made this preparation beforehand? How did Alexander the Great make his way down there? Who was guiding him? On the slope known as Little Galilee, there is a place where, according to tradition, Alexander the Great met the high priest of the Hebrews.

That, then, is where it happened. When Alexander the Great came down, he saw the high priest, and the high priest saw Alexander. The gates were opened to him, and the keys were handed over. A banquet was held that evening. According to the story, Parmenion, his aide-de-camp, did not sit at the table; he was beside himself. At last Alexander the Great called him and asked, “What has upset you tonight? What is it?” He replied, “Great king, we have marched under arms all the way from where we began to this place, conquering everyone before us, and now you dismounted and bowed before a priest?” Alexander answered, “How could I have remained seated? If you knew what God had told me about this priest and this city, you too would have dismounted.” What had God told him? “This city is Mine. Do not harm it.”

He was to receive the keys, while the priest had not been told beforehand to whom that vision referred. This man is not your enemy and will do you no harm. To this day there is an apolytikion there commemorating that meeting and the tradition behind it. Does that mean nothing? God also worked in this way. What has He not done to reveal Himself? This is a matter of the utmost importance. These things are inexhaustible. I could sit here speaking to you for a month, and still they would not be exhausted. Let us therefore pay attention to what He came to bring, because He came for the sins of the world. As I told you this morning, the Messiah did not come for festivities. He did not come for tambourines and celebrations; He did not come to give us a thirteenth month’s salary. He came because of sin. All of us who have been wounded by Satan, He leaves in the inn, so that there our wounds may be tended by the people of God. Go, then, to the lessons. Do not let Satan keep you away.

Νεκρός είσαι. Γράφει ο Παύλος ότι οι χήρες, οι οποίες δεν προσέχονται στην παρθενία τους μετά τη χηρεία τους, δεν είναι πραγματικές, είναι νεκρές. Το γράφει ή δεν το γράφει; Αυτό λοιπόν το οποίο έχασε ο άνθρωπος στα μονοπάτια της αμαρτίας ήταν η ζωή και αντί της ζωής εισήλθε ο θάνατος. Ποιος την έχει τη ζωή;

Στο σολέα, μπροστά στην ωραία αυτή πύλη. Οδηγεί προς τη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Αυτός είναι ο λόγος που έπρεπε να έρθει ο ίδιος. Αυτός είναι η αυτοζωή. Μπορούσε να συναντηθεί η Θεότης με την ανθρωπότητα; Όχι. Και τι έγινε τώρα; Ενεδύθη η Θεότης ανθρωπότητα, για να μπορέσει να συνομιλήσει και να προσφερθεί στον άνθρωπο, να είναι προσιτή η ζωή. Η υπόθεση του χριστιανισμού δεν είναι υπόθεση αγαθοεργίας, δεν είναι υπόθεση καλών έργων κλπ. Είναι υπόθεση ζωής και ο άνθρωπος που δεν έχει σχέση με τον Χριστό δεν έχει ζωή. Σας απασχόλησε ποτέ ότι λέγεται ζωηφόρος ο Σταυρός, ότι λέγεται ζωηφόρος η πλευρά Του;

Πώς αναφέρεται στον Χριστό και γράφει 1981; Από πού μετράζει;

Και ο Χριστός, τον σταύρωσαν, αλλά τη ζωή δεν την πήρανε. Του πήραν το σώμα, το μαλλί του, αλλά δεν του πήρανε τη ζωή. «Ὁ θάνατος αὐτοῦ μετὰ πλουσίου». Έβλεπε τον Νικόδημο και τον Ιωσήφ τον Αριμαθαίας που τον περιποίησαν στον τάφο. Πάρτε την υπόθεση, γιατί δεν έχει μόνο προφητείες, έχει και εικόνες. Πάρτε τον Ισαάκ που τον θυσιάζει ο πατέρας. Τι είναι αυτό; Ο Αβραάμ θυσιάζει τον μονογενή και ο Πατέρας θυσιάζει τον Μονογενή. Πού τον θυσίασε τον μονογενή ο Αβραάμ και πού θυσίασε τον Μονογενή ο Θεός; Στο όρος Μοριά. Ποιο είναι το Μοριά, ξέρετε;

Αυτό θα έχει το όνομά του, και πόσο σύμφωνα. Βέβαια, τέσσερα φωνήεντα και δύο σύμφωνα. Οκτώ γαρ μονάδας, τόσες δεκάδας, επί τούτων δε εκατοντάδας οκτώ. Ανελειπιχνών, λέει, φρυσή, φρυσή νότια, κατάλαβαν τα τελευταίους πρώτα. Δηλαδή, θα έρθει, λέει, ο Υιός του Θεού εις τη γη και θα φορέσει σάρκα, να το πει, ομοιούμενος με τους θνητούς. Θα φέρει το όνομα αυτού τέσσερα φωνήεντα και δύο σύμφωνα, αλλά τα φωνήεντα θα είναι ολόκληρο, δηλαδή ο ακριβής γνώμονας: οκτώ μονάδες, οκτώ δεκάδες και οκτώ εκατοντάδες. Γιατί θα μπορούσε να πει κανείς ότι αυτό είναι φλούκο. Τι άλλα ονόματα έχουμε, τέσσερα φωνήεντα και δύο σύμφωνα;
