Summary

The speaker argues that Orthodox Christians must understand and defend the reasons for Baptism, marriage, Confession, Holy Communion, prayer, and worship. Christians are urged to seek God’s guidance when choosing a spouse and to approach marriage as a vocation of mutual salvation rather than personal convenience. The speaker concludes that the crisis surrounding marriage requires informed faith, serious Ninevite repentance, renewed appreciation of the sacraments, and trust in God’s power to restore society.

This evening, by the grace of God, I would like to speak about something that may be considered timely. You know, there has been a great deal of controversy these days concerning the institutions of our Church and the commandments of God. Certainly, there would not be so much controversy or so much confusion if we were properly informed about the things we say we believe.

You know, we Orthodox are the only ones who remain ignorant and cannot give reasons for the things we say we believe. And that is grievous. At the same time, it leaves us without excuse, and one day we will be called to account.

Why? Because we did not learn, and did not care to learn, the things we say we believe, so that we might also pass them on to others. Peter says that we must always be ready to give a defense. We baptize—but why do we baptize? What is Baptism founded upon?

We marry people—why do we crown them? We hear Confessions—why do we do so? I receive Holy Communion—why do I receive it? I pray and go to Church—why do I do these things? This question of “why” is missing among us. That is precisely why there is so much controversy these days. And many people who are regarded as faithful Christians—and who themselves believe that they are faithful Christians—are far removed from reality. A few days ago, I was among relatives and friends. They were people friendly toward the Church, and they too had just come from Church. We met, they offered us breakfast, and the subject arose of this so-called civil marriage.

I saw that all five of them supported it. I stood there looking at them and said, “You have just come from Church, and you say such things?” “Why?” one of them asked me. “Is that not how things are?” With their permission, I explained the consequences of this undertaking, and they looked at one another. How far removed we are, how completely in the dark about these matters! Woe to us if the Orthodox Church has supporters like you. And what I am telling you is true. I was also on the Holy Mountain when the Governor-General came there. He was a theologian, yet he spoke in favor of civil marriage.

Do you understand? I was the only layman there; all the others were clergy. The fathers spoke to him and answered him. Then I said, “If you permit me, let the laity also be represented through me.” He said, “Yes.” I told him, “Everything you are saying is merely a pretext. Are you yourself convinced by it?” Not at all. And I explained the consequences to him. He did not agree. Yet here was a public official telling you that this was how matters stood. Do you now understand what remains to be done? I see that they are calling for a referendum. Let a referendum be held: civil marriage will receive ninety percent of the vote.

Civil marriage will receive that percentage if a referendum is held—not because people truly want it, but because they are uninformed. Do you understand? A taxi driver was taking me somewhere, and somehow—I do not know how—the conversation turned to this subject. “Ah,” he told me, “then we will be spared the expense. You pay the priest a thousand drachmas to get married.” I said to him, “Now you will pay five or ten thousand to the mayor.” He stared at me. “The priest will no longer receive a voluntary thousand-drachma offering from us. Instead, it will be compulsory to pay the mayor five, ten, twenty, or thirty thousand—I do not know how much.” Many people are uninformed about these matters, you see. In any event, this is not my particular field, nor am I qualified to answer as a lawyer or constitutional expert, and so forth.

Others know these things, and you read and hear what they have explained and continue to explain—clergy, bishops, intellectuals, theologians, lawyers, and others. Mr. Tsarountakis spoke the other day; Father Augustine spoke; others have spoken and written; Father Epiphanios and all the learned men have written, and still others will continue to write—the Metropolitan of Demetrias, Christodoulos, or whatever his name is, and so forth. Everyone is writing. But who pays attention to what they write and say? Who takes it in and comes to understand how matters truly stand, so that wherever he goes he may enlighten others as well? Broadly speaking, I see and observe one thing: all of us, even those considered more advanced, have turned against...

...the government. But the government is not the guilty party; we are. They are merely the instruments carrying it out. The time has come for us to pay the price. What do you need marriage for, sir, if you have no children? Where is the marriage in that? What use is it to you? If you take a woman without marriage—and even now that you have taken her in marriage, what is she to you if you do not fulfill the purposes of marriage? Is that not so? What do you have her for? We do not value these things, and we will be deprived of them. The righteous God sees. The time has come for us to pay the price. They will listen to no one. You will see strange things. The strangest things will happen in our days and in our time. They are only the instruments; we are the sinners.

We ourselves must change. And not with a shallow repentance that merely says, “I repent,” but with Ninevite metanoia—repentance in dust and ashes. Yes, we are at fault, and then things will change. He who is above has the power, through His mercy, to change everything, to transform everything, and to bring about what must be done—what is beneficial for souls. We do not value these things. Why, then, should we have them? What use are they to us? How little we value them! God is righteous, and if there were some way for Him to show us how He sees these matters and who is truly causing the things that are happening in our days, we would be ashamed even to discuss them. We would change our lives and implore God to intervene. So this evening, I would like to speak about this subject in order to shed some light on it.

Let us learn what it is that we believe, what harm may be caused, and what foundation underlies all these things we possess. They are institutions that have existed through the ages, from the beginning of the world. This is what I wanted to speak about, without bitterness toward anyone. I hold myself responsible, and I will demand an account from myself, acknowledging that I am at fault and that this is precisely why the same things keep happening. So, the subject is marriage. How does it stand? What is its foundation? Someone says, “There will be civil marriage.” Have you, then, discovered the definition of marriage? And who are you to devise a new form of marriage now?

When did marriage begin? Did marriage not already exist? Therefore, you are altering it, inventing something else, and placing yourself in conflict with the One who first established marriage. You are now in another condition: you are acting unlawfully. And an unlawful union outside the Church’s blessing, outside the Church and outside God, is called adultery; it is called fornication. It brings a multitude of Canons and excommunications upon your head, from which you will by no means escape. Let all the mayors in the world gather together; they will not be able to save you. For there is Another who will judge you. This is what a person must consider. This is where he must begin. If he does not begin there, then whatever he does and whatever he thinks, he will have failed.

In the first century of our Church, a man named Tertullian gave a definition of marriage. “Marriage,” he says, “is a great Mystery.” It is a Mystery because the two are mysteriously united and become one flesh. And it is a blessing. “Marriage is a Mystery joined by the Church, confirmed by the offering, and sealed by the blessing; the angels proclaim it, and the Father ratifies it.” For, as you know, the servant of God, this man, is crowned with the servant of God, this woman, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. In other words, these two persons are joined together, as we were saying, through the Holy Spirit. That is why it says, “What God has joined together, let no man separate.” Is a man to put his hand between them and tear apart what God has joined? Another ancient father, Clement of Alexandria, says, “Marriage was established by God and is something great and holy.” Is it merely a contract, a partnership, an acquaintance? No. It is something great and holy. From the same passage...

Saint Ignatius the God-bearer, for example, says: “Those who marry”—that is, the men entering marriage—“and those who are given in marriage”—the women entering marriage—“must form their union with the consent of the bishop.” Do you simply reach out on your own and take someone? Then you are a fornicator or an adulterer; you are a prostitute or an adulteress. How can you take the other person on your own? “They must form their union with the consent of the bishop, so that the marriage may be according to the Lord and not according to desire.” Otherwise, it is merely desire; it is not as God wills. Basil the Great, in his forty-second Canon, says, “Marriages contracted without the consent of those in authority are fornication.” What does that mean? Such unions take place outside the established authorities and institutions. “Neither while the father is living, nor without the master’s consent, are those who live together free from blame, until those in authority approve their cohabitation; for only then does it acquire the validity of marriage.” Only then does the marriage truly take place. Otherwise, you are doing something of your own invention, and that is not marriage. This is what the Saints say. I am speaking as an Orthodox Christian, as one who claims to be among the faithful—nothing more. John Chrysostom speaks about marriage, about the Mystery, and about the partnership of two people, and he says: “Why do you parade the sacred...”},{

“...Mysteries of marriage before the public?” The sacred Mysteries of marriage! “All these things must be driven away, and from the beginning the maiden must be taught modesty.” In these matters, you must counsel your daughter to approach marriage with modesty and reverence. “And you must call priests, so that through prayers and blessings they may strengthen the harmony of the union.” You must call a priest to bless it, he says, so that the bond may be strengthened and the foundations of the marriage may be firm. “So that the bridegroom’s love may increase”—so that the groom may love your daughter more seriously—“and the maiden’s chastity may be deepened,” so that through the blessing of the Church your daughter may remain faithful and honorable beside her husband. “And by every means the works of virtue will enter that home”—so that through the marriage service the blessing of God may enter that house—“and all the devices of the devil will be driven away.” All these things, says John Chrysostom, will be accomplished through the priest. I would like to believe that when he said these things, he was not trying to collect the thousand drachmas people talk about. For that is what they claim: that the hierarchs who are now laboring to enlighten the people on this matter and preserve the institutions of the Church are acting out of financial self-interest.

I would like to believe that this is not a matter of financial self-interest. John Chrysostom had no such motive, nor did the other fathers I mentioned earlier. What follows from all this? From age to age, from the most ancient times—for these men belong to the first, second, and third centuries—people have spoken about marriage, about the Mystery, and about the clergy’s role in marriage. Outside this, the Church has known no other union down to the present day, at least within Orthodoxy. Continuing with the same subject, I would like to explain, for those who do not know, what the first marriage was...

...and what the purpose of marriage is. This escapes many Christians as well, and they fail to fulfill the purpose of marriage. They marry for other reasons, but not for the true one. The first marriage was established by God, and the first couple were Adam and Eve. If you open Holy Scripture, you will find the following in Genesis 1:27–28: “And God made man; according to the image of God He made him; male and female He made them. And God blessed them, saying...” He did not make them and then say, “Take each other and farewell.” God made Eve and Himself became the one who led the bride to Adam.

He blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and have dominion over it.” Thus the first married couple was blessed by God for the purpose of bearing children, increasing, and filling the whole world, so that the entire earth might be filled with human beings. This is the purpose of marriage. But we must also bear in mind what is said here and what Ignatius of Antioch says: “There was one.” Who was the one woman? Eve. And who was the one man? Adam.

He made one woman for the one man, not many. He did not make many women for him.

Let us begin where God tells us to begin. If we try to begin in some way of our own devising, we will find ourselves off the rails. We will be derailed. If we were never going to stand before Him, then take all this and throw it away. But one day we will stand before Him, and He will say, “I left you many signs to heed, if you had wished to do so. But you did not wish it, and you are guilty.” You know what happens now and what we ourselves have done—and I do not exclude myself, the one speaking to you. Each of us simply reaches out and takes an Eve.

Some Eve reaches out and takes an Adam. But she could ask God. With the first couple, God Himself was the matchmaker. Adam did not go looking or ask for her. God Himself fashioned her and gave her to him. And Adam says, “This is flesh of my flesh.” She is his side; Eve is his side. Therefore, when my wife is truly my side, my spouse, we will be a harmonious couple. If there is incompatibility of character, or any of the thousand and one other things we put forward as reasons for breaking up the household and the marriage, it is because we did not ask God: “Who is the Adam for me, Lord?” and “Who is the Eve for me, Lord?” God was not asked.

The only One who is not consulted in these matters is God, except by a very few people who truly pray with simplicity and say, “My God, You—You arrange everything.” And you know, in such cases God does not act as we imagine. We want a good man to marry a good woman, and a good woman to marry a good man, so that both of them are good. But then what will become of the unattractive? And what will become of those who are not good? God does not think that way. God does not force Himself upon us—not because He is unkind—but if God had been asked, I might not have the wife I have today. Perhaps she would not have been my wife.

And she might not have the husband she has today. God may have had another match in mind. I know of one such case. There was a woman living in America who asked God to give her a companion. A marriage arrangement was made, but it became a difficulty because she knew that this was not a man with whom she could easily understand and communicate. Yet she prayed and said, “Lord, if You believe that I should marry this man, for reasons known to You, give me the strength to do so, and help me to help him, if I can.” And the marriage took place. What she endured for thirty years...

It is beyond description. But after thirty years, she held his funeral and buried him a few months ago in Corfu, his homeland. She struggled for thirty years. If the life of this woman could be written down, it would reveal what is possible. Such strength does exist; it truly does.

She was placed beside that man in order to save him. But we are not willing to sacrifice ourselves—to help a woman, to help a man, to lift a person up from where he has fallen. We are not willing. We shrink from hardship. We would like everything to be pleasant and easy.

God, then, who fashioned the first couple, kept the choice in His own hands. But we do not entrust it to Him—to God.

I will show you two passages from Holy Scripture which say that God arranges whom we marry. Yet we do not ask Him. I believe you have a copy of Holy Scripture yourselves. Turn to Proverbs 19:14, where you will find these words: “House and possessions are inherited from fathers, but a wife is joined to a man by the Lord.” These words are also used in the marriage service. Houses and fields, it says, you naturally inherit from your father. But it is God who will give you your wife; and likewise, of course, it is God who will give you your husband—provided, of course...

That you ask Him. He does not intervene by force. But we do not ask God for our spouse. There is another account as well; I do not know whether you have ever read Tobit. The Archangel Raphael took Tobit’s son and went with him to recover some money his father had once lent, since the father was now blind. Open the sixth chapter of Tobit, verses 12–18. The Archangel Raphael did indeed take the young man with him. They went and recovered the money; in the meantime, he arranged his marriage and brought him home married and with possessions. His elderly father was healed, his blind eyes were opened, and they lived on that money. The young man found it difficult to marry the woman there, because another problem was involved.

The Archangel Raphael intervened and said to him, “Do not be afraid, for she has been prepared for you from all eternity, and you shall save her.” She has been prepared for you from all eternity, he says, and you are the one who will save her. So I would like...

In this connection, to remind you that God did not establish marriage and then leave people entirely free to do whatever they pleased. He showed them what they should do if they wished to avoid the great hardships, dead ends, and painful situations of marriage, which can lead us to do foolish things that condemn us to Hell. And remember what I told you: He gave one woman to each man. It is easy to change what we call the married union, the partnership, and form another one—but God is watching you. Are spouses shirts to be changed? Women and men must not be exchanged in this way.

The Church has shown condescension and allows a second marriage, and even a third marriage, in exceptional circumstances and with penances. But these are not the Canon. A person who wishes to live rightly and to have some hope of meeting God one day must follow the path God has laid down. Every relationship outside the Church’s blessing and marriage is not a godly relationship; it is fornication or adultery. Allow me to remind you what is said concerning adultery and fornication.

What must a person face, however much he may try in his own way to pardon these things? For, as you know, a law is now being made to tell us that adulterers, men and women alike, are in the right from now on, so that they may sleep peacefully. Do you understand what that means? But such things are said by weak people who live in this condition and want to give themselves an answer. Listen to what it says: “If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife, or with his neighbor’s wife, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.” That is what God says. What the minister may say, I do not know. God, in Leviticus...

Chapter 20, verse 10, says that both must be put to death. Now go and try to erase those words. Go and erase them.

I want you to know that adultery is a crime hateful to God and destructive to society. It is a violation of divine law, a profanation and rejection of the great Mystery of marriage and of marital happiness, and a cause of divorce. Paul says, “Marriage is honorable among all, and the marriage bed undefiled; but God will judge fornicators and adulterers.” Not the mayor—God will judge them. If you have no fear of God, then there is nothing for us to discuss. You take your road, and I will take mine. Adultery is contrary to the will of God and, properly speaking, to human justice as well. Therefore, adultery is...

Warfare against God. You wage war against God; you set yourself against Heaven. And when you set yourself against Heaven, expect thunderbolts. It is also warfare against your fellow man, because the other man will tear you apart—he will tear you apart.

Of course, because adultery violates God’s commandment, “You shall not commit adultery.” And it is warfare against one’s fellow man because it destroys the family. Do you know what it means for another man to come into your home and tell you, “I am not afraid of you; your wife belongs to me”? That is a grave thing. In such a case, nothing remains standing. Paul says: “Do not be deceived”—the world is misleading you—“neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor men who have relations with men will inherit the Kingdom of God.” He has no reason to take money from our wallets. Open 1 Corinthians 6:9 and see for yourselves what we are telling you. And there is also a stark passage from the Wisdom of Solomon.

It says these sorrowful words: “The children of adulterers will not come to maturity, and the offspring of an unlawful union will perish. Even if they live long, they will be regarded as nothing, and their old age will be without honor in the end. If they die young, they will have no hope and no consolation on the day of judgment; for the end of an unrighteous generation is grievous.” How can you make such a relationship lawful? It will always remain fornication or adultery. Whatever you devise, whatever law you produce, whatever scheme you invent, it will have these consequences. And Basil the Great says that this union is so contrary to nature, so disordered, that it must not take place.

Do you know how he compares this adultery—this union outside the Church’s blessing and apart from God? He compares it to the mating of the moray eel with the viper. Do you know what Basil the Great says in the Hexaemeron? He says that the viper goes down to the sea, to the shore, and hisses. Then a serpent called the moray eel comes out of the sea and mates with it.

Perhaps the example of the viper can serve us in another way as well: the mating and union between the viper and the moray eel, a sea creature, is an adultery against nature. “Let those who plot against the marriages of others recognize what venomous beasts they resemble.” Basil the Great says these things, not I. Let people write whatever they want and do whatever they want. This is what our Fathers say; this is what our Church says; this is what our written authorities say. Of course, you will hear it. You do not want to hear it? Then do not listen.

The Forty-Eighth Canon of the Holy Apostles says: “If any layman puts away his own wife and takes another, or marries a woman divorced by another man, let him be excommunicated.” The matter is clear. The Thirty-Ninth Canon of Basil the Great says: “The woman who lives with an adulterer is an adulteress for the entire time.” Do you know what this means? Forgive me. A woman left her lawful husband and now lives with another man. Her husband is still alive, and so is the other man’s wife. That man is an adulterer.

The other woman’s husband died, and then this man had her crowned in marriage, as used to happen. Now he has been crowned with her. Today he would simply take her without the crowning—there is no need for expenses or wedding crowns. Yet he is still an adulterer, because he did not cease from his adultery. Even after marrying her, he continued to be an adulterer. Indeed, John Chrysostom argues that David was punished not so much because he committed adultery with that woman, Bathsheba, but because he married her and continued to keep her as his adulterous partner after her husband’s death. That is why he was punished: because he continued to keep her. Chrysostom says that he was punished not so much because he committed a sin and was led astray, but because he persisted in it. That, according to Chrysostom, is the punishment I am telling you about.

The Forty-Eighth Canon of Basil the Great says the same, and so does the Ninety-Third Canon of the Sixth Ecumenical Council. The Fifty-Eighth Canon of Basil the Great likewise says: “The adulterer shall remain without Holy Communion for fifteen years.” Fifteen years away from Holy Communion and the holy things. “The fifteen years shall be apportioned for him as follows: four years among those who weep, five among the hearers, four among those who prostrate themselves, and two standing with the faithful, but without Communion.”

On the basis of what I have told you, I want to say that what is happening today is casting us into another condition—the condition of adultery—in which we are lost. That is why these two bills go together: one completes the other and brings the destruction to its fullness. Always be wary of those who tell you that there was supposedly no Church blessing of marriage, and that priests and bishops introduced such things merely to collect a little money. No! If we search the history of our Church, we shall find testimony from the beginning: as I read to you, from Tertullian, from Ignatius, and from the apostolic traditions, all speaking about the Church’s blessing of marriage.

And in history I have found two or three examples that I will share with you. For instance, in the year 601—601; we are now in the year 2000, so this was fourteen hundred years ago, not something from yesterday—it says: “In this year, in the month of November, in the fifth indiction, Emperor Maurice joined his own son Theodosius in marriage to the daughter of Germanus the Patrician, and Kyriakos, Patriarch of Constantinople, crowned them.” He crowned them.

Emperor Heraclius and Eudokia were crowned on October 6, 610, in the Church of Saint Stephen, by Patriarch Sergius.

The Seventh Canon of the Synod of Neocaesarea says: “A priest must not feast at the wedding of those entering a second marriage.” It says that a priest must not sit down to eat at a second wedding. So there was a priest, and there were wedding crowns. “Since the one entering a second marriage is asking for metanoia, repentance.” For the person marrying a second time must repent. “What kind of priest would consent to the marriage by taking part in the feast?” Who are you, priest, to appear there and tell him that this marriage is blessed when it is not blessed? I am not speaking about the consequences. I am saying that there is a priest and there is a Church blessing. That is what I want to say; that is what I want to establish. Saint Timothy of Alexandria likewise says in his Eleventh Canon...

Many who have read these things already know them. Open the Rudder and we shall find them. It says: “If someone summons a cleric to join a couple in marriage.” So marriage was performed by a cleric, not by the mayor. “To join them in marriage, but he hears that the marriage is unlawful,” and learns that there is something improper about the couple, “whether an uncle is to marry his niece, or a man is to be joined to the sister of his deceased wife”—that is, he marries his wife’s sister after his wife has died—“should the cleric take part or make the offering?” He must not take part or find some way to arrange it. Yet here again there is a cleric—a cleric. Therefore, this is not a matter of collecting money, because it comes from an age when people did not even have a twenty-drachma note to give. Saint Ignatius writes to Polycarp.

Saint Ignatius, writing in the earliest years—this is what I read to you earlier—says that marriage must take place “according to the Lord and not according to desire. Let everything be done for the honor of God.” Everything must be done with God as its foundation. And John Chrysostom speaks about the crowns placed upon those who enter the communion of marriage. I do not think the mayor is going to place crowns on them now; he will not have any crowns. “For this reason,” Chrysostom says, “crowns are placed upon their heads as a symbol of victory.” That is, the young woman did not become a fornicator or give in, and the bridegroom did not become a fornicator or give in. They struggled, and now the Church crowns them. “A symbol of victory, because they approach the prayer unconquered, not having been overcome by pleasure.” They were not defeated, and so the Church crowns them. This is the purpose of the crowns.

The crowns have no other purpose.

Besides, what did our Christ say when He spoke with the Pharisees, as recorded in the nineteenth chapter, where they asked whether a certificate of divorce should be given and why divorce had been permitted, and so forth? At one point our Christ says: “Therefore, what God has joined together”—not what the mayor has joined, but what God has joined—“let no man separate.” This union is a Mystery; let no man separate it. And Paul writes: “A wife is bound by law for as long as her husband lives.” When he dies, the woman may marry again...

That is the only path and the only way. If her husband falls asleep in the Lord, “she is free to marry whomever she wishes,” to take whomever she wishes, “only in the Lord”—not in the mayor, but in the Lord. And it says, “He blessed them.” Do you understand? Do you see? We shall need these things. And in the Apostle reading for marriage, from the fifth chapter of Ephesians, Paul says at one point: “This Mystery”—not this business arrangement—“this Mystery is great.”

“But I speak concerning Christ and the Church.” Ephesians 5:32. What does this mean? Have you ever looked deeply into it? What does it say elsewhere? “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife.” Why should I leave the father and mother who brought me into the world in order to follow you? Yes. This is also what we were saying about Christ. Did He not leave His Father and come to the Church, the harlot and adulteress, and take her as His bride? That is why it is said that Christ left the heavenly Father, came to the Church drawn from the Gentiles, and became one spirit with her. This is the Mystery. And the husband will leave his parents and be joined to his wife.

He spoke of a Mystery. And is there not a broader conclusion drawn by John Chrysostom? He says: “God will not judge us according to these worldly laws, but according to the laws that He Himself established concerning marriage.” The only reasonable cause for separation is one prescribed by law, by an emperor—Leo, and so forth—when the spouse is a heretic. In this situation, each of us must put his own affairs in order. Now, before I finish, I would like to tell you something else.

Will such a person want anything to do with religion? Will the children they have be baptized?

Naturally, ninety-nine times out of a hundred, they will not baptize them. And so, before long, what shall we have? We shall have little unbaptized children running about in the streets, and so forth. A female professor, as I read in the newspaper the other day, dared to describe Baptism—and I think she said it on television as well—as a ridiculous farce. Do you understand where ignorance leads?

I ask this because, when we were speaking with that man I mentioned earlier on the Holy Mountain, I put this question to him: “What will become of these children?” And he replied, “That too must somehow be regulated. No one can baptize me,” he said. “Did anyone ask me whether I wanted it? When the child grows up, in complete freedom, let him accept Baptism and be baptized on his own. We should not baptize him and force him.” That is what he told me there, and many people out here say the same: let the child decide for himself when he grows up. For he may say, for example, “Did those who baptized me ever ask me?” Do you ask the child when you baptize him?

Many people say this. “Do you ask the child when you baptize him?” Allow me to answer you: do you ask the child when you kill him?

According to the statistics, we have three hundred thousand killings in Greece. Did you ask those children before you killed them? I must ask the child before I save him, is that it? But you do not ask him before you kill him.

To put it simply: when you baptize a child in infancy, you place a treasure in his hands, so that when he grows up it may save him, and so that, once grown, he may make use of it if he wishes. If he does not want it, he can throw it away. You have not harmed him. You have placed a treasure in his hands. Let me ask you: you put the little child down to sleep. His mother fed him and laid him down. Then he aspirated and died. Where will that child go? What will become of that unbaptized child? He is lost. Have you ever read about these matters to see how they stand? Listen to an example from Basil the Great; it is not my own.

“If an unbaptized child dies through the negligence of its own parents, they are condemned to a penance of three years.” That is what it says here. I will also tell you another detail that will be useful to you women. If a child is born and is in danger—if the child is ill and only three or five days old—then let the child be illumined; that is, let the child be baptized. Another woman who is baptized and ritually clean is to nurse it. But the child’s own mother is not to enter the room where the child is lying.

She must remain apart for the forty days, until she has been fully purified and has received the prayer from the priest; neither is she to touch the child’s body. So it says that, even when the child is only three days old, you should baptize it, and another woman is to nurse it until the mother has completed the forty days. There is also Canon 110 of the Council of Carthage, which says: “If anyone says”—and here it addresses these gentlemen—“that little children and newborn infants are not baptized for the remission of sins, and that they inherit nothing from Adam of ancestral sin that must be cleansed through Baptism, let him be anathema.” Does he know these things?

Does modern man know these things? He does not. He thinks the child is a little angel. How, he asks, can the child bear ancestral sin? “It must make a confession of faith,” he says. He quotes: “He who believes and is baptized.” Very well. What confession of faith did the children circumcised at eight days old make? What confession did Christ make? What confession did the Honorable Forerunner make? What confession did Abraham and those other little children make? Did they not have to be circumcised on the eighth day in order to be entitled to eat the Passover? What confession did they make? The other day I heard the Shunammite woman crying out, “Jesus Christ!” and saying, “You—yes, you—the child at home.” And John Chrysostom says: “Is it not possible for one person to receive on behalf of another—for one to ask and another to receive?” Is this not so because the child is too young?

It is because of the child’s weakness, because the little one does not yet understand, and because there is a need for a sponsor. Why is that person called a sponsor? Because the sponsor receives the child and takes responsibility for it. The world does not know these things, and so people tell you, “This is a business. A Baptism—good grief! A wedding—good grief! Money! It is all about money.” No, my friends, it is not about money. Things are quite different, yet people do not take this into account. Therefore, if we understand these things, we must take a stand ourselves and also enlighten others about the consequences we will face. Secondly, civil marriage means that I can marry a Jewish woman, a Muslim woman, a Buddhist woman—anyone at all. And you understand where that leads and how far removed it is even from the religious marriage we have known.

Previously, the man or the woman had to become a Christian for such a marriage to take place. Our people were preserved, our nation was preserved, our lineage was preserved. Now everything will become a mixture from forty different villages. How can you understand what will happen from this point onward? You will be married by one mayor, then go to Megara and be married by another, then go farther on and be married by someone else, and so forth. And can this be marriage when there is no priestly blessing at its heart? Do you understand what evils and what dreadful consequences will come from these things? These two matters—marriage and adultery—are bound together. They are inseparably linked. Woe to us! I have not spoken to you from a legal standpoint or anything of that sort; those matters belong to others. I have explained how these questions stand according to our faith.

We will have to answer for these things before God; whether we want to or not, we will face them tomorrow. Therefore I beg you: if you can do nothing else in this situation, pray—pray. Let us ask God for mercy. He knows how to find a way to mend what is broken among us. May God hear us. Amen.

Γιατί; Γιατί δεν μάθαμε και δεν ενδιαφερθήκαμε να μάθουμε αυτά τα οποία λέμε ότι πιστεύουμε, ώστε να μπορέσουμε και σε άλλους ανθρώπους να τα μεταφέρουμε. Ο Πέτρος λέει ότι πρέπει να είμεθα πάντοτε σε θέση να απολογούμεθα. Βαπτίζουμε. Γιατί βαπτίζουμε; Πού στέκεται;

Να μάθουμε τι είναι αυτό που πιστεύουμε, τι ζημιές μπορούν να γίνουν, πού στηρίζονται όλα αυτά τα πράγματα τα οποία έχουμε εμείς. Σε θεσμούς απ' αιώνων, από τότε που υπάρχει ο κόσμος. Αυτό ήθελα να μιλήσω, χωρίς να έχω χολή με κανέναν. Τον εαυτό μου αιτιώμαι και αυτού θα ζητάω τον λόγο, και ότι εγώ φταίω και γι' αυτό ακριβώς γίνονται πάντα τα αυτά. Το θέμα περί γάμου, έτσι; Πώς; Πού; Λέγει: «Θα κάνει πολιτικό γάμο». Δηλαδή, το βρήκες τον ορισμό του γάμου; Και ποιος είσαι εσύ που φτιάχνεις τώρα σχέδιο καινούριο γάμο;

Θέλει να έχει σχέση με τη θρησκεία; Τα παιδιά που θα γεννήσει, θα τα βαφτίσει;

Ρωτώ, γιατί ξέρετε, εκεί που μιλούσαμε τον άλλον επάνω, που είπαμε, στο Άγιον Όρος, του έθεσα το ερώτημα αυτό: «Τι θα γίνουν τα παιδιά αυτά;» Και είπε ότι «μα και αυτό», λέει, «πρέπει κάπου να ρυθμιστεί. Δεν μπορεί να με βαφτίζει εμένα», λέει. «Με ρώτησε εμένα αν θέλω; Όταν μεγαλώσει, εν πλήρει ελευθερία, να δεχτεί το βάπτισμα και να βαφτιστεί μόνος του· να μην τον βαφτίσουμε εμείς και τον αναγκάσουμε». Αυτό μου είπε εκεί και αυτό το λένε και πολλοί εδώ έξω: μόνο του, όταν μεγαλώσει, να το κανονίσει αυτό το πράγμα. Γιατί μπορεί να πει αυτό, παραδείγματος χάριν: «Εμένα αυτοί που με βάφτισαν, με ρώτησαν;» Το ρωτάς που το βαφτίζεις;

Πολλοί. Το ρωτάς που το βαφτίζεις; Θα μου επιτρέψεις να σου απαντήσω: εσύ το ρωτάς που το σκοτώνεις;

Των σαράντα ημερών, έως αν καθαρθεί τελείως και λάβει ευχήν παρά του ιερέως. Μήτε μην άψηται του σώματος αυτού. Από τριών ημερών, λέει, να το βαφτίσεις και θα το θηλάζει άλλη μέχρι που να σαραντίσει. Και υπάρχει ακόμη ο εκατόν δέκα κανών της εν Καρθαγένη Συνόδου, που λέγει: «Τω λέγοντι» —και πιάνει αυτούς τώρα τους κυρίους— «τα μικρά και νεογνά βαπτιζόμενα μη εις άφεσιν αμαρτιών βαπτίζονται, μηδέ έλκειν τι του Αδάμ ταύτα προγονικής αμαρτίας», ούτε έχουν υπόλοιπο προγονικής αμαρτίας απάνω τους, «το οφείλον καθαρθήναι», ώστε να βαπτιστούν, να καθαρθούν, «ανάθεμα έστω». Τα ξέρει;

Ο σύγχρονος αυτά; Δεν τα ξέρει αυτά. Νομίζει ότι το παιδί είναι αγγελουδάκι. Πώς το φέρει το προπατορικό να έρθει; «Να ομολογήσει», λέει. Λέει: «Ο πιστεύσας και βαπτισθείς». Καλά. Τα παιδιά οκτώ ημερών που περιετέμνοντο, τι ομολογία έκαναν; Τι ομολογία έκανε ο Χριστός; Τι ομολογία έκανε ο Τίμιος Πρόδρομος; Τι ομολογία έκανε ο Αβραάμ και άλλα παιδιά αυτά τα μικρά; Σε οκτώ μέρες δεν είχαν να περιτέμνονται για να δικαιούνται να φάνε το Πάσχα; Αυτά τι ομολογία έκαναν; Προχθές άκουσα τη Συναμίτιδα να φωνάζει: «Ιησού Χριστέ», και λέει «σένα, σένα, παιδί στο σπίτι». Και λέει ο θείος Χρυσόστομος: «Πότε δεν λαμβάνει άλλος αντί άλλου; Άλλος να ζητάει και άλλος να λαμβάνει;» Ή μη δια το άωρον της ηλικίας;
