Summary

Saint Anthony the Great’s warning about a world that calls spiritual sanity madness is presented as a description of an age estranged from Christ, the Gospel, and the Church. Persistent prayer offered with faith, purity, and a corresponding Christian life can transform people and circumstances, whereas prayer used only during crises is spiritually inadequate. Jacob’s struggle with God demonstrates that humble, persevering prayer prevails upon divine love, bringing blessing, reconciliation, and strength against human opposition.

This evening I wanted to say something to you in love that could be considered especially relevant to our times.

I do not know whether you have ever read Saint Anthony the Great. Among the many wise things he said, he also spoke, I would say, about our own days. Indeed, he said something sorrowful: a day will come when the world will be possessed by demons, and if someone is not possessed, the others will tell him, “You are possessed.” The world, he says, will be raging in madness, and whoever is not raging with it will be told by the others that he is mad, that he is possessed by a demon.

Unfortunately, my dear ones, we are living in that age today. With very few exceptions, the world is for the most part driven and tossed about by an evil spirit. The Holy Spirit has nothing in common with the world as it is today. Our Lord Jesus Christ is a stranger to most people. People in general do not want Christ; they do not want the Gospel; they do not want His Church. Why? Someone may ask, “Does He do them harm?” No. He exposes the lawlessness of their lives. That is precisely why they do not want to listen. They silence His voice.

The world is rushing headlong down the slope toward its destruction. Unfortunately, our days are very dark from every point of view. To those who might say, “I am not concerned about eternity,” we could answer, “But you will lose even this temporal life.” If you could at least enjoy this passing life, perhaps your argument would make some sense. But as things are going, you will lose not only eternity but this temporal life as well. The world today does not accept the things of Christianity and Christ. It wants a life of its own: a life of the flesh, a life centered on the ego, a life governed by self-interest.

Each person has a little religion of his own and decides for himself that he is saved. Indeed, he often says things such as, “If only there were more people like me.” Then he sleeps peacefully, convinced that he is entitled to the Kingdom of Heaven and that the Lord would be doing him an injustice if He said, “I do not know you.” There are few—very few, scarcely more than can be counted on one hand—who struggle and, with the fear of God, strive to keep God’s commandments. A demon among the young, a demon among workers, a demon among businesspeople, and a demon even among the elderly. I repeat: very few have grasped what truly matters.

They entreat Christ, the Theotokos (God-bearer), and the saints, and they keep the commandments so that the grace of God may remain with them and, through them, perhaps someone else may also be saved. Since the number of people who hold up Heaven has grown smaller, what happens now? A greater burden falls upon those who are still holding it up. Suppose we are carrying together a beam weighing two hundred kilos. When one person withdraws his shoulder, more weight falls upon the others. When another withdraws his shoulder, still more weight falls upon those who remain. And when the third and the fourth do the same, what will happen then? Therefore, because the majority no longer live their faith, the Christian must...

...live his faith all the more deeply. The Christian takes on responsibilities. The more the world advances toward its own ruin, the more responsibilities are heaped upon those who are considered practicing believers. So let us not sleep peacefully. Let us be deeply concerned, and let us entreat God to give us strength, so that we may labor for our own salvation and, if possible, help other brothers and sisters as well. We bear a responsibility when others fall. We will be called to account for their fall and asked whether we, for our part, did what we ought to have done. I trust that you read Holy Scripture, and so you must have come across...

...the Prophet Ezekiel, who says the following in the third chapter: “When I say to the lawless man that he shall die”—that is, that the lawless person who does not do what is right will be condemned—“and you do not admonish the lawless man to turn from his lawless way, he shall die in his sin,” he will go to Hell, “but I will require his blood at your hand.” Consider what this tells us. Perhaps this is the first time you have heard that our lives are bound together, and that our own souls are placed at risk by what we have or have not done for another person. Yet I hear objections: “Who listens to you nowadays? You can say whatever you like, but no one pays attention.”

He does not listen. But because no one listens, does that mean nothing should be said? God knows that no one listens. And do you know what He says next? “If you admonish the lawless man”—not merely rebuke him, but admonish him. In Greek, the word means to put sense into someone’s mind. You will tell him the truth and try to bring him to his senses. You will offer him reasonable arguments. You are obliged to do this. If, then, you admonish the lawless man, he may, as we commonly say, treat your words with utter contempt. What happens then? “He shall die because of his sin.” He will be condemned because he did not accept the warning and did not come to metanoia, to repentance.

“But you have delivered your own soul.” We therefore have an obligation, especially in our days, when the descent is so steep, the ground so slippery, everything is collapsing, and nothing remains standing. We are obliged to put our shoulders to the task. We are obliged to struggle, to expose ourselves to danger, and to stand at the forefront for as long as God permits it. Therefore, let us be deeply concerned about everything that is happening around us and within us. In a very short time, the whole abyss has opened. Every demon there is has come into the world today.

We are passing through difficult times and, I repeat, if we continue as we are, we shall lose eternity and this temporal life as well. Once, Christ stood before a man possessed by demons, from whom He cast out perhaps six thousand demons—an entire legion. When the disciples asked Him, “What is happening? How are we to do this? How are we to cast such things out?” He answered, “This kind cannot come out”—a person cannot be freed from Satan—“except by prayer and fasting.” This was the remedy given by the great Physician, the true Master: this condition is healed only through these two virtues. One is called prayer, and the other is called fasting. Yet these two medicines are absent today...

...even among practicing believers. They are absent not only from those under demonic influence but even from religious people. That is precisely why we are dazed like frightened chicks, without strength, courage, knowledge, arguments, or anything at all to say. For we ourselves do not keep these two commandments. We want to solve personal problems and family problems. We also want, in some way, to influence the broader affairs of the state and the Church. Then bend your knee in prayer. Prayer possesses immense power, but we have never learned how to pray.

Prayer is truly a science without end. It is inexhaustible. I do not know whether even the angels fully know how to pray; that I do not know. It is something endless. But because it is endless, it does not follow that we should disregard it and set it aside. As Christ says, through prayer and fasting you will be freed from Satan’s influence. Satan fears these two things, and if you want to be delivered from him, you must make use of them. You know that the objects sent into space—the Sputniks and the various other spacecraft—can be called back from here on Earth.

The people inside prepare themselves, operate the equipment, and return to land. Some craft are automatic and have no one aboard, yet they return on their own. People here on Earth have the power to call them back, to tell them, “Return and land,” and they return and land. So man has such power that he can say from far away to something that has been circling in space for months or years, “Come down now.” How, then, could he not have power to influence something else for the good? Most of you have televisions in your homes. There is a little electrical device that you press from a distance to change the channel. You sit in your armchair and affect what happens on the television.

You choose another channel, then another, without getting up or tiring yourself. From here, you affect something over there. So you possess that power and can exert influence. How does it work? In some mysterious way; I do not know exactly how. Prayer is like that. Prayer has the power to affect circumstances, people, societies, the Church—everything. That is why Satan fears prayer so greatly. He does not want prayer. So I ask you: can you pray? Can you say the Our Father or the Creed? But is merely saying them truly prayer? Many people today, especially parents with families, are not merely sorrowful but utterly heartbroken.

They live in an age in which they have lost their children. Those who retain some religious conscience are utterly heartbroken. They have lost their sleep and their health because they have lost their children. They are powerless; their children have fallen under demonic influence. Why? Because the parents do not pray. A parent—or anyone else—who prays with love and genuine concern for another person under Satan’s influence possesses immense power. If our children do not listen to us, do not respect us, want none of our counsel, and regard us as enemies, it is because the devil has come between us and they are under Satan’s dominion. Once they are freed and an angel comes between us instead, everything will change.

They will fall down, kiss your feet and your hands, and say, “Mother, Father, you were right, but I could not see it.” Here, then, is the weapon called prayer. My dear ones, it must be taken out of the armory and put to use, both for ourselves personally and for the sake of the people whom we may influence. Perhaps you do pray, but the question is how you pray. Prayer is a weapon in the human hand, and I would commend it to you as an antidote to the death now spreading through families, society, and everything around us.

Five people who truly move Heaven can change the course of events. We should not find this strange. When our God was about to burn Sodom and Gomorrah because of the grave sin of sexual relations between men, Abraham learned of it. At the oaks of Mamre, in the persons of the three angels, he had offered hospitality to the Holy Trinity. Without anyone urging or begging him, he considered it his duty to intercede for those people. Yet he could never have imagined that, among the roughly five million people of the five cities, there would not be even five righteous people.

He said to God, “I know that You could never destroy the righteous together with the wicked. If there are a hundred righteous people there, will You destroy the city with them?” “No,” God said, “I will not destroy it.” But there were not a hundred. “What if there are eighty?” “No.” Then he asked about sixty, fifty, forty, and finally ten. He reached ten and stopped there. Yet not even ten were found. In other words, if ten righteous people had been there, five million would have been spared. So if we are destroyed today, it will be because there are no people who pray. It is said that in 1453, when the Turks took Constantinople from us because of our many sins, Mehmed...

...saw before him a hand with five fingers, hovering in the air wherever he went. Alarmed, he summoned all his officials, scholars, and anyone among his people who might give him an answer. What was this hand that appeared before him wherever he went—when he went to eat, when he went to his office, wherever he might go? No one could give him an answer, so he summoned a Christian. The Christian told him, “Outside the City there is an ascetic monk. Summon him to explain it to you; he will surely know.” So Mehmed summoned the monk and described what he was seeing. The monk replied, “Ah, this is not about you; it is about us. Do not be afraid. It is nothing for you to fear. It simply means that if even five faithful people had been found in the City, you would not have taken it.”

“It represents five people, but you do not have even that many.” Do you understand? Be afraid lest God withdraw His grace from us as well. Otherwise, we shall be utterly destroyed. For this unique weapon—the personal weapon; I was about to say the atomic bomb, the hydrogen bomb, the rockets—none of these is anything compared with the prayer of a Christian. And we do not know this. Open Isaiah to the seventh chapter, and you will find that two kings attacked another, smaller kingdom. That small and weak king, when those two beasts fell upon him, cast off his royal robes, put on sackcloth, and went to the edge of the city. There was a winepress there, where the grapes were trodden, and he entered it and began to pray to God. God saw him and sent Isaiah, saying, “Go and tell this king not to be troubled or afraid of those two smoking firebrands.” God called those other kings smoking firebrands. That is what all the powerful are like; that is what all those under demonic influence are like; that is what all evil people and all terrible things are like in the sight of God, when there is someone who prays. Today, the knees of Christians must become calloused like a goat’s, like those of James, the brother of the Lord. His knees and hands were like a goat’s from his many prostrations.

If we want to save these people, if we want to help our family, if we want our Orthodox Church to endure, if we want priests to remain to bury us and serve a memorial service for us, if we want all these churches to remain open, then we must get down on our knees. We must learn to pray. Wherever a person goes, he must pray. Prayer is the oxygen of the human soul. Just as a person cannot live his physical life without oxygen, so he cannot live his spiritual life without prayer. A person who does not pray is spiritually dead. Secondly—prayer; I do not know.

In our present condition, prayer is the one weapon every Christian possesses, and it has been so since the foundation of the world. As you know, the first two human beings felt the need to offer sacrifice to God, even giving from their own possessions. That is a form of prayer—primitive, certainly, but still a form of prayer. When Christ came into the world, He left us the supreme example: during His temptations and all His sufferings, He prayed and fasted for forty days and forty nights. Is this not what the Evangelists Matthew and Luke tell us in the fourth chapter of their Gospels? How, then, can I—a man made of dust, plagued by the devil from my mother’s womb, “conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me”—how can I, without prayer and fasting,

possibly withstand these things? It is impossible. Let us not deceive ourselves. Yet we seek ways of our own, imagining that we can please God and persuade Him to shelter, cover, and protect us. God will not protect us, because we are not doing what we ought. “You ask and do not receive,” James, the brother of the Lord, also says, “because you ask wrongly.” Cain also offered a sacrifice, but God did not accept it. Why? Because God discerns what we offer. He looks outwardly to see whether we merely fill the air with holy words, whether we recite the Paraklesis or the Our Father. But He also looks inwardly, into the heart, to see the spiritual condition of the person making the offering.

In Mark, we read that Christ was once in the Temple, sitting near the treasury, and as people entered, He watched how they put money into it—not how much they put in, but how they gave it. Then He noticed that poor widow with her two small coins and said, “With her two small coins, she has put in more than all the others.” God looks at how you do something and why you say something. It is true that we pray. But when? When we are in need. And when a person prays only in times of need, he will receive nothing from God. A person must pray at all times, on the pleasant days and on the difficult days.

You must persevere. There is a story in the Gerontikon. Once an ascetic was sitting high above in his hermitage. Down below, across the plain, a torrent was flowing, for it had just rained. A traveler came and tried to cross. He knelt there in the rain and remained for a long time in prayer, evidently asking God to help him cross without drowning. When the ascetic saw him from above, he joined his prayer to the traveler’s and prayed as well: “My Christ, help him cross.” At last, after a long time, the man made up his mind, made the sign of the Cross, and entered the river. But the current swept him away, and he drowned.

The ascetic was bewildered. How could their prayer have gone unheard, so that God allowed the man to drown? Shortly afterward, while the ascetic was still dazed, he saw another man arrive and approach the river. This man did not stand there for long. He made the sign of the Cross two or three times, plunged into the river, and crossed safely. Then the monk was utterly bewildered and scandalized. The logismos, the intrusive thought, came to him: “You are unjust, O God. The first man prayed in the water for half an hour, and nothing happened; this one made the sign of the Cross once and crossed safely. I am leaving. There is nothing here. God is unjust.” But God took pity on him and sent an angel to help him understand. The angel came and said, “What is wrong? Why do you seem so troubled?” “How could I not be troubled?” he replied. The angel said, “Tell me what happened to you.”

He answered, “I was watching, and this is what happened: one man prayed for half an hour, and I prayed with him, yet when he tried to cross, he drowned. Then another man came, made the sign of the Cross only twice, crossed, and did not drown. Where is God’s justice?” The angel replied, “Why are you scandalized? That man who knelt had never prayed before; he prayed only now, when he was in need. But the other man prays every day. That is why this happened.” And this is true. Many people, when life becomes difficult—when they fear cancer, war, Ecevit, and so on—make vows and do similar things. But God knows that, as soon as the cloud has passed, we shall return to being exactly as we were, and the sacrifice is not worth anything. Therefore, together with the prayer of which I am speaking, there must also be a corresponding way of life, and the true conviction at all times that everything depends upon Him.

He is the One who upholds and directs all things. Prayer has tremendous power, my beloved, and I would like to commend it to you. On the Holy Mountain, specifically at the Great Lavra, among its many chapels there is a chapel dedicated to the Honorable Forerunner. Inside it is an icon whose composition is very instructive and encouraging. I will describe it, if you will allow me to continue. It portrays Saint Athanasius the Athonite with his hands raised in supplication to our Most Holy Theotokos. He was facing some temptation or need—I do not know exactly what—but in any case, he was imploring our Most Holy Theotokos.

Our Most Holy Theotokos holds the Lord Jesus Christ as a small child in her arms, and with her right hand she points toward the Lord and says, “Protect Your servant”—presenting his request and his need. Moved, overcome by the compassion of our Most Holy Theotokos, Christ, as a child in her embrace, raises His hand and blesses Athanasius. This is the point: through your prayer, your purity, and your faith, you can set this whole process in motion. You can activate this personal weapon of Heaven called the Most Holy Theotokos, and you will see miracles; you will see change; you will see how the demons flee from the home, from the workplace, and from people.

You will see how they flee from governments—how completely they flee! We Christians are all-powerful, but we do not know how to use this power, which, as I tell you, is found in this thing called prayer. A troparion of our Church says: “Through fasting, vigil, and prayer, receiving heavenly gifts.” These three together, when placed in the hands of a believer, bring Heaven down to earth and raise earth up to Heaven. I want you to know that Christ can be overcome.

God Himself can be overcome. Man overcomes God. A human being, who is nothing, can overcome God. What does he overcome in God? His almighty power? No—His love. A person has this power when he prays regularly and with humility: he can overcome even God Himself. Do you remember the night when Jacob was returning to his brother Esau, and Esau had come out against him with four hundred men? That evening Jacob sent all his people, his wives, and the others across a small river, while he remained behind. Scripture says that he wrestled throughout the night with a man who was clearly Christ. At daybreak the man said to him, “Let Me go.” Jacob answered, “I will not let You go unless You bless me.” The man touched Jacob’s leg at the hip and put it out of joint so that Jacob would release Him—but Jacob still held fast. Can I truly hold God fast through my prayer? Yes. You constrain God to hear you. Finally, He asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “Jacob.” Then He said, “From now on you shall be called Israel, because you have prevailed with God, and you shall also prevail with men.” They are called Israelites because they are the descendants of Jacob. Jacob was renamed by God on that night when he prevailed with God, and so they are called Israelites.

The name means one who is strong before God. Therefore, since he prevailed with God, he would also prevail with men. And this is exactly what happened afterward. Esau raised his hands, embraced Jacob, and kissed him, though he had intended to tear him into a million pieces because Jacob had earlier taken away his birthright. But metanoia, repentance, and prayer changed everything. They changed the course of events. And I do not know whether you are aware that, because of this event, you can find the thigh portion of meat at any time in Jewish butcher shops. Jews do not eat the thigh, because God injured the hip and leg of their forefather, and they regard it as ill-omened and do not eat it. These events I am telling you about are found in Genesis.

Does man, then, overcome God? He overcomes God’s love. Imagine a grandfather wrestling with his little grandchild. At some point, the child gets the upper hand, throws the grandfather down, and then applauds because he has defeated him. Who really brought the grandfather down? Did the little child do it by his own strength, or was it the grandfather’s love for his grandchild? It was the grandfather’s love for his grandchild. That is how it is. Put this to the test; take note of it. Our times have need of it. We must render service both to ourselves and to the people at large, for they do not know these things. They are tossed about, suffering and tormented, and at the same time they are heading toward destruction. There is tremendous power

within each human person—not in the physical atom that people have split today to make atomic bombs to drop on our heads, but within us as individual persons. We are all-powerful. With one sign of the Cross from us, the bomb does not explode and the rocket does not launch. Everything short-circuits through a single sign of the Cross made by a true and faithful Christian. Establish prayer in your home, and you will resolve all your problems. The other problems will also be resolved, because your nous, your spiritual intellect, will be opened to understand how you should act. Do not rely only on knowledge derived from the world. Suppose, for example, that you want to buy an apartment—I am simply giving an example.

You consult the lawyer, the notary, and everyone else—and you do well. But do you consult God? Or will you bring Him in afterward, through the priest, to perform the blessing of water when you move in? God knows whether you should even go there at all. Why do you not ask Him? Who will your neighbor be? With whom will your children associate there? What if the building collapses, or any of a thousand other things happens? What if someone starts a fire and destroys your apartment too? Why did you not ask God? This is why we suffer shipwreck; this is why we suffer. A man reaches out and takes a young woman who appeals to him. He looks at her: her height suits him, her figure suits him, her beauty suits him, and her money suits him. Ten days after the wedding—divorce.

“Incompatibility of character.” Why? Did you ask God? Did you say to Him, “Is this woman meant for me?” Did you pray? Did you fast, practice self-restraint, and keep vigil? You are standing at a crossroads. You are weighing whom you will make your partner, whom you will bring into your home, whom you will make the mother of your children. Where are you going? I know how many thousands of divorces are pending in the Metropolis of Athens. And how many marriages are broken without ever reaching divorce, and so on. Why? Because God was not consulted. “Oh, is God going to give me my wife?” This is what Scripture says: “A house and possessions are apportioned by fathers, but a wife is joined to a man by the Lord.” Fields and vineyards, it says, you inherit from your father.

But your wife will be given to you by God. Think of Adam. Who is your Eve? Who is your own rib? You reach out on your own, take some rib, and end up with your back torn apart. It is like entering into a binding agreement. You did not ask God. Nor did you, young woman, ask who this scoundrel is who has taken you. Tomorrow he may throw you out of the window. Such things happen even among the good people, and they are few. Most are not upright, despite their education, their learning, their positions, and their wealth. Why? Because there was no prayer: “My God, protect me. Is this young woman meant for me? Is this man meant for me? Is this profession right for me? Is this profession right for my child? Is this journey right for my child?” Yet we proceed according to our own imagination

and according to the standards of the world, without prayer, which is the touchstone by which everything is tested. That is why we fail. And I am not speaking about people who know nothing. I am speaking about those who say that they know, yet have failed even more disastrously. Why? Because they did not make use of prayer. We mock the monks who pray unceasingly day and night and, through prayer, do not permit a logismos, an intrusive thought, to enter; they do not give Satan room, but drive away his evil, deceitful, and predatory attacks. Go ahead and laugh. “All they say is ‘Lord have mercy.’ Even God must be tired of hearing it.” Really? Is God tired of “Lord have mercy”—God, who sacrificed Himself to save you and to save me? Do you know what it means to use, to place within your mouth, the

name of Christ and of the Most Holy Theotokos? Have you ever read or heard that beautiful saying of John Climacus: “Flog your enemies with the name of Jesus”? Satan cannot bear the name of Christ passing continually through your nous, your spiritual intellect. He cannot bear the name of the Most Holy Theotokos or the names of the saints. Then nothing sown by Satan can take root in the human nous; it will be driven out. Put this to the test and hold fast to it. We have no weapons; we have no artillery. The Christian has no pistols, no mines, no banners. He does not take to the streets. The Christian enters his inner chamber and prays, and from afar he changes things. Just as, I told you, you change television channels from a distance, so the Christian changes circumstances. But, I repeat, prayer is necessary.

Prayer is not something one ever finishes learning. You begin, but there is no end. It is a lifelong study. I tell you, I do not know whether even the angels have finished learning exactly how one ought to pray to God. This is the great need I am speaking of, the need of all humanity. And we ourselves need it too, because many of us have lost our sleep.

We have lost our peace. If you read, listen, and pay attention to what is happening and where we now stand, you will say, “What is happening here? We are perishing.” Thank you.

The point is that we do not pray. When we pray, everything changes. And Christ has joined fasting to this prayer. Thank you. Through prayer and fasting. Unfortunately, many Christians treat fasting as something secondary. They say, “That is for monks; those things were written for monks.” The monks take the angels as their example, and the laity take the monks as theirs. Everything we have, we have received from the monks—countless treasures. Has the secular world written any of these things? Nothing. All these books you see—the Parakletike, the Triodion, the Horologion, the Menaia—everything we have comes from the monks. Would we even know how to open our mouths and say the Our Father or the Trisagion prayers? Nothing. All the canons and everything else appointed for the feasts come from the monks.

It is absurd for anyone to say that fasting was invented by monks. Did the monks teach Christ to fast for forty days and forty nights? Tell me, did the monks teach the people of Nineveh to set fasting against the decree that God had issued, signed, and sealed, and so change the outcome? Have you ever thought about that? “Thus says the Lord.” And what does Jonah proclaim? “In three days Nineveh shall be destroyed.” It was written and signed. And what happened? When the king heard, he gave an order: neither the people nor the animals, not even the young, were to eat or drink.

What weapon did they have? The king said, “Who knows? Perhaps God will relent and not destroy us.” And God did relent. Human metanoia—repentance—together with fasting and prayer disarms the almighty hand of God, and the sword falls to the ground. Have you seen, on either side of a proper Gospel iconostasis, the archangels standing guard, with a sword there? That is the justice of God. And fasting, I tell you, changes the course of events. Christ takes the written decree and tears it up; God tears up His own signature. Why? Because Nineveh fasted. Did monks teach them that? How would they have known it? So I take this opportunity...

We are now in a period of relatively light fasting. This fast is not severe, since fish is permitted on Saturday and Sunday, and oil on the other days except Wednesday and Friday. It is not the strict Great Lent or the fast of the Dormition. But I take this opportunity to tell you that, since this is Christ’s command and since prayer and fasting enable us to withstand this heavy assault from Satan, fasting was established as a law in Paradise and is a commandment of God. No human being has ever made a law against his own belly, that much-abused belly of ours. We all indulge it and take care of it. Adam received God’s first commandment in Paradise.

The commandment was, “You shall not eat.” Saint Basil the Great says, “‘You shall not eat’ is the institution of fasting and self-restraint.” And if Eve had fasted then, we would not now need this fast. We would have no need to fast. God did not tell her not to sit beneath the tree. He did not tell her not to look at it. He did not tell her not to pass near it, nor did He tell her not to touch it. He told her not to eat—to fast from that one thing. And the commandment was not burdensome. How could it be? Of all the rest, He allowed nine hundred and ninety-nine things and forbade only one. If He had forbidden nine hundred and ninety-nine and allowed one, we might have said, “Your law is harsh, O Lord.” But He said no such thing. Therefore, Saint Basil says, if Eve had fasted...

“We would not now need this fast. Let us fast, then, that we may return to Paradise.” Fasting has therefore existed from the beginning. It is a grave mistake for people to say that fasting was devised by human beings—and, indeed, by people who were not normal or sound in mind. No. They established these things rightly and with sound understanding. The proof is that Christ Himself lived the fast. All the saints and all the Fathers advanced through fasting. And today the Holy Mountain, the model of monasticism and Orthodoxy, fasts not only on Wednesday and Friday but on Monday as well, with only one meal after the ninth hour. Someone may cry out, “I cannot do that.” No one has imposed it on you. Someone else may be able to do it.

Speak with your spiritual father. You may even need to eat meat or fish, or include milk, cheese, and butter in your diet. Your illness may require it. You may be a woman who has just given birth. Do we not have new mothers today? There may be any number of circumstances. If there is a health reason, fasting is set aside. The Church does not give us fasting to kill the body, but to kill the passions. If people kept a three-day fast, every illicit bed would disappear. All the nightclubs, cafés, and the rest would close. A mere three-day fast would close them, because all these things are fed by feasting and drinking.

The human body is like a fire. When you pour diesel, gasoline, and oil onto a fire, the blaze grows, and you burn both yourself and everyone around you. When you withhold the fuel, it dies down. That is how it is. Unfortunately, although fasting is such a great virtue, Saint Basil the Great also says, “In every Church, angels record the names of those who fast.” In every Church, he says, there is an angel who writes down who is fasting. Take care, he says, lest for the sake of a little pleasure in food—because you will not eat food without oil, while I, for example, eat it with oil—you lose your place in that record.

He says that you will be reported as a deserter. Saint Basil the Great says this. Allow me to read it to you exactly, so that we may have his own blessing.

Unfortunately, many people have misunderstood these things and so deprive themselves. Listen: “There are angels who, in every Church, record the names of those who fast. Take care lest, for the sake of a little pleasure in food, you lose your place in the angel’s record and cause the One who enrolls the soldiers to charge you with desertion.” You will be reported as a deserter, he says, because you were unwilling to struggle. And here is the other passage I mentioned: “Fasting was established as a law in Paradise.” Adam received the first commandment: “You shall not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” The words “You shall not eat” are the institution of fasting and self-restraint.

“If Eve had fasted from the tree, we would not now need this fast. Let us fast, then, that we may return to Paradise.”

People who refuse to understand find an excuse and have even come up with this saying: “The servant of God fasts because he has nothing to eat. Fasting was invented to console those poor people who have nothing.” But we who have plenty—we are rich, and our refrigerators are crammed with every kind of non-fasting food—say that fasting is for the poor. We, Glory to God, have so much that we can throw it away. So you are rich and well fed, and you violate the fast. Do you know what the godly John Chrysostom says to people in this situation? “O rich man,” he says...

“O rich man, do not insult fasting by refusing to receive her as a companion at your table.” “Go away, Lady Fasting; I do not want you. I will not count food without oil as proper food. Out!” Do not do that. “Do not dishonorably drive her from your house.” No. Invite her in. Today is Wednesday; it is her day. Today the cooking pot belongs to her. It is Friday; today the pot belongs to her. But fasting is not only abstinence from food; there is also bodily abstinence. Married couples, and all who have relations of the flesh, should take heed that Wednesdays, Fridays, and feast days do not belong to them.

They have an obligation to abstain if they want the rest of their life together to be blessed. So I shall repeat it from the beginning: “O rich man, do not insult fasting by refusing to receive her as a companion at your table. Do not dishonorably drive her from your house, pushed aside by pleasure...” Explain word for word what you have just said, because not everyone can hear and understand it—and I am the first among them. If you are rich, he says, do not insult fasting; that is, do not send her away. He explains it afterward: “By refusing to receive her as a companion at your table.” In other words: “I do not want you. Go on to the poor. We are rich here. We will not let you, fasting, into our house.”

“Pushed aside by pleasure.” “I want to eat something I will enjoy. I will not eat food without oil.” He continues, “Lest she someday accuse you before the Lawgiver of the fasts.” Fasting may turn back and take you before the Lawgiver, Christ, who ordained fasting, and accuse you, saying, “I went to that house, but they would not receive me; they drove me away.” “Lest she someday accuse you before the Lawgiver of the fasts and bring upon you the sentence of poverty”—lest He take these things away, he says, make you poor, and then force you to fast—“either through bodily illness or through some other grievous circumstance.” Or He may give you an illness that forces you to look at every kind of food from a distance. For, you know, there are people who...

They disregarded God’s law and lived very dissolutely, always gratifying their flesh and paying no heed to God’s law. Then, at a moment they never expected, two illnesses came upon them: one requires zucchini, while the other requires meat. Now try to reconcile the two. How can you manage it? Or you may have a great deal of money but be able to eat only one little yogurt. Then you are forced to fast from nine hundred and ninety-nine things. This truly happens. It happened to a friend of mine. On one of the Sundays of the fast, he invited me to his home after Church and said to his wife, “You know, Litsa, what you are to bring.” I grew suspicious. I thought, perhaps she does not know; and even if she does, perhaps she knows only what to bring for you. “Come on,” he said to me, “these things are nothing.” And what do you think she brought? Two little pans of fried food...

With eggs. I did not touch them at all. I drank only a coffee that was there. I told him, “Take care, because God will take these things away from you.” At that time he was receiving about three hundred thousand a month in rent. He jointly owned two apartment buildings with another man. “Take care,” I told him, “or you will only be able to look at all this food from a distance.” It was as though heaven itself were open when I said it.

Within a few days he developed diabetes and, at the same time, albuminuria. And so the two contrary requirements arose: one condition called for zucchini, while the other called for meat. Now he has become thin as a rake. He asked me, “How did you know?” Was it I who said these things? Who is it that teaches us all this?

I will simply tell you what is right. So when you tell me that fasting was made for the poor, while you are rich and your refrigerator is so full that you do not know what to do with everything in it, you are making a grave mistake. Discernment is needed.

These virtues come from God and are beneficial to man.

Man has Satan right here, at his belly. “The power of Satan is upon the navel of the belly.” He must take care not to feed the appetites of the lower belly, or he will lose both his soul and his life. God has no need of these things. We are the ones who need fasting. We are the ones who need prayer. And this is not only for adults, because mothers today have no courage to require it of their children as well. A child should fast from an early age. Keep non-fasting foods away from the child and give him food cooked with oil. He will be healthier and may even gain weight during the fast. At the same time, he will learn and will remind you, just as we learned in our own homes, that the three F’s always apply.

What were the three F’s? Lentils on Monday, beans on Wednesday, and fava on Friday. The three F’s, which no longer exist today—the three F’s in the Orthodox Christian’s alphabet. Nowadays everything has been flattened out. Mothers, teach your children repentance. What are you raising the child to be—a little Jew? A little Muslim? What are you doing? Is the child not a Christian? How will you present him before God? How will you bring him to Holy Communion? What spiritual light have you given this little one if you die tomorrow? These things are essential. Of course, you must not go to extremes. If the child is ill or frail, give him his milk; it has now become medicine. But not when you tap one cheek and the other one jiggles. The child is five years old and weighs forty kilos, and still you keep feeding and fattening him. What are you fattening—a pig or a Christian child? What are you making of him? These are mistakes. Forgive me for the way...

...for the tone in which I speak. These are mistakes. But they absolutely must be corrected, and they will be corrected only through prayer. For often, in the situation I have just described, the mother may want one thing while the father does not, and a conflict will arise. Then prayer must come between them. Daniel did not want to eat the rich food and break the fast, while Nebuchadnezzar and the official told them to eat.

Indeed, the official in charge feared that if Daniel and the other young men with him appeared weak, he would lose his head. They prayed, and God changed the spiritual mind of the chief steward there. He removed the rich food and gave those three young men—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—legumes and water. But ten days later, when the king came and examined them, what did he see? They were more handsome...

...and ten times more intelligent.

These are the fruits of fasting. How did Daniel accomplish this? He accomplished it through prayer. So you too must pray and say, “My God, illumine this person.” If, after all, the husband does not wish to fast, or the wife does not wish to fast—whichever way the situation may be—then at least let that person allow the rest of us to do what is right. Let us give even this small spiritual advantage to the child, so that the child may know that fasting is a weapon.

Παθαίνει σε λίγες μέρες ζάχαρο και παθαίνει ταυτόχρονα λεύκωμα. Και έρχονται τα δύο αντίθετα αυτά: το ένα θέλει κολοκύθια και το άλλο κρέας. Και έχει γίνει τώρα σαρέκος. Μου λέει: «Τι ήξερες;» Εγώ ήμουνε; Ποιος τα λέει αυτά τα πράγματα;
