Summary
The Entrance of the three-year-old Theotokos into the Holy of Holies begins the Church’s preparation for Christ’s Nativity and fulfills God’s promise of victory over Satan. The Theotokos intercedes with the Son born from her, serving as the ladder of Jacob through whom God descended and humanity is raised toward deification. The raising of Lazarus illustrates this synergy: Christ accomplishes what humans cannot, while commanding them to perform what remains within their power.

In our last talk, those of you who were with us will remember that we spoke on the occasion of the feast of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple. I can say that this subject is inexhaustible, because it concerns the Most Holy Theotokos. Her person has many dimensions and offers us many moral and doctrinal teachings.
I insist on this point because many of us have not paid enough attention to the history leading up to the life of our Most Holy Theotokos, so as to understand what kind of person she must be to have such a history. As a result, we speak very superficially and do not draw upon her person for our own edification, either individually or more generally. As I mentioned the other day, this whole matter begins when two human beings and Satan first appear upon the scene. From that moment, God speaks and takes counsel concerning it.
Then, when the fullness of time came, this person appeared among us. Her appearance was neither accidental nor ordinary, but was connected with the coming of God into the world, with the person of Jesus. We must understand this; and in order to understand and attend to it, we must attend to the Church. Many people regard the Church and her hymnography as something secondary. They imagine that the things chanted, read, preached, and recalled in the books of the Church—
—what are they? Merely something to fill the time. I would like to speak about this, because, if I remember correctly, I did not touch on it in our last talk. That was only a brief talk about the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple. My purpose was to show that, historically at least, the writings of the Church and the Fathers demonstrate that the Entry truly took place. I also explained the reasonable grounds for the Theotokos being kept, so to speak, within the Temple. Those of you who attended Church for the feast—not merely going at the end with your offering, as is customary, but arriving in time for the morning service—must have heard something strange proclaimed that day.
“Christ is born; glorify Him!” Yet His mother has scarcely appeared upon the scene; she is only three years old, and already Christ is born! That is what the hymns proclaim. Did someone perhaps make a mistake? No. They say: “Christ is born; glorify Him! Christ comes from heaven; go to meet Him! Christ is on earth; be exalted! Sing to the Lord, all the earth, and praise Him with gladness, O peoples, for He has been glorified.” In the first ode, the irmos presents Christ as being born. How do these two events fit together? There is a connection between them. The hymn seeks to teach us this, and I want to remind you of it. You see—
—the little maiden entering the Holy of Holies to be kept there? The time has come for Christ to be born. Her entry is the herald of Christ and of His Nativity. Thus, the Entry of the Theotokos is the beginning of the events surrounding the Nativity of Christ. A Christian has much to learn by attending to the hymnography of the Church. Everything in it is divinely inspired and precise; each part completes the others. The hymnography of our Church is wholly doctrinal, catechetical, supplicatory, and filled with katanyxis, with compunction. I mean the troparia and the other hymns chanted at Vespers and Matins. There we learn the whole doctrine of the faith. There we learn the meaning of each feast. This, then, is what should strike us as remarkable on that day. And, to tell the truth, many of the faithful know this and gladly go early in the morning on the feast of the Entry in order to hear, “Christ is born; glorify Him!” The beginning of the events fulfilling the prophecy, “I will put enmity between you and the woman,” and all that follows—the words with which God threatened Satan in Eden—begins with the Entry of the Theotokos into the Holy of Holies. A few days ago, a small newspaper clipping came into my hands.
It reported statistics concerning the corruption of young girls in England, even girls as young as three. It spoke of girls of four and three years old being corrupted, as well as girls of nine, ten, eleven, and twelve. There are even three-year-olds who have been corrupted. If anyone has doubts or wants further details, I can provide them later. I do not have the clipping with me, and I did not think to bring it and read it to you so that you could see exactly how things now stand. Perhaps Satan was stirring up corruption even more intensely in those days, so that no virgins might remain. For this reason, God in His providence proved wiser than Satan. And if you wish to read how Satan reasoned and how God caught him in his own trap, read the first and second chapters of the Wisdom of Solomon. The Wisdom of Solomon is not included in the Bible Society’s Old Testament, because the Protestant world, along with others and the Jews, rejects every book connected with Christ our God and speaking about Him. You will find this book, the Wisdom of Solomon, only in the Septuagint text. There you will see how Satan thinks and how he is caught in his own trap.
Are these events accidental, then? I am deeply saddened by all those who have not paid attention and who reject the account of the Entry of the Theotokos. I pity them, because they dare to raise their own judgment above the Church. The Church has not fallen into error to this day, nor will she ever do so. Why? Because the word of Christ is fulfilled: “I will send you another Comforter, who will remain with you until the end of the age.” This other Comforter, the Holy Spirit, is the One who guides the Church, even in those places where our own reasoning imagines that it finds mistakes.
This applies to the administration of the Church and to other matters connected with her. Even there the Holy Spirit exercises providence. The intelligible purpose is still present, and things had to happen in this way, although we cannot grasp it. Much could be said against what I am telling you. But no one can take this conviction out of me: it is set in me like stone that the Holy Spirit has not abandoned the Church for the sake of a few people. Nor will the Church perish. Those who are merely called faithful may perish, but the Church will always rise. The Church will reach her Ararat. And the more you subject the Church to human reasoning, criticism, and moral judgment, the more radiant she will become and the higher she will rise.
That is a subject for another day, in connection with the question one of you asked earlier. This is why I always tell you that, if possible, you should consult the Menaia in the Church. They ought to be among the principal books in your library. A person learns many things from them. The Synaxaria likewise remind us of much. In places there may be many words that some people consider unnecessary. If your nous, your spiritual intellect, has great capacity, you will desire them; if it has little capacity, it cannot contain them. Do not impose your private reasoning even here. Receive these texts exactly as they are.
So the hymn says, “Christ is born; glorify Him!” This is drawn from the doxology offered by the angels when He was born. That is its source. The first to praise the Nativity were the angels. We knew nothing; even the people living at that time knew nothing. The angels were the ones who knew. The hymn therefore addresses the angels. And it calls every faithful person who enters into this angelic moment in our life to glorify Him together with the angels, because Christ is born. “Christ comes from heaven; go to meet Him!” Will we ever go to meet Christ?
Have you ever read the Epistles to the Thessalonians? There Paul writes, “And we shall be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.” By saying this, Christ establishes the conditions: prepare yourselves. Do not remain below in sin, unbelief, and negligence. Prepare yourselves. “Christ comes from heaven; go to meet Him! Christ is on earth; be exalted”—you must rise. These words are drawn from the Gospel. Christ descended so that we might ascend. Consider it in a single sentence: God became man so that man might become god by grace. There was no other reason. To ascend to God, man must pass through Christ. Christ is the bridge between man and God—Christ alone. Therefore, if a person is unwilling to set himself in order so that he may ascend through Christ, there is no other road. It is through Christ. In the Orthodox Church, among the other symbolic teachings expressed in the Church’s decoration, there is the iconostasis with its three doors: the north door, the south door, and the Beautiful Gate.
Here is the lesson. You have seen that the two side doors, north and south, are guarded by archangels holding swords. What are they doing there? “You shall not pass this way. We are guarding it. You shall not pass here.” Then where are you to pass? Through the middle. That door is open. Some people imagine that they can somehow attain their goal by their own method—by their kindness, their almsgiving, their forbearance, or whatever else they accomplish. But there is only one road, the one and only way: through the Beautiful Gate.
As you approach the Beautiful Gate, however, you will encounter two persons—persons both ancient and new. You will meet the New Adam, Christ, and the New Eve, the Most Holy Theotokos. Behind them stand the old Adam and the old Eve, who had closed this door. Then these two came in obedience and opened it. That is the way you must go; reflect upon it. That is where you must pass. There is no other way. Christ, then, is the One who saves, as the Church states so succinctly: “Save us, O Son of God.” And with the intercessions of the Theotokos, we still say, “Save us, O Son of God.” There is no other way. The Saint—the Theotokos—always intercedes, and Christ saves.
Therefore, unless Christ signs your permit of entry, your ticket, so that you may pass through the archway behind the Beautiful Gate—the Holy of Holies, which opens into heaven—nothing else will avail you. You may cry, “Lord,” do whatever you wish, perform as many works as you please, and become a better person, yet Hell awaits you. But if you wish to take the true and proper road, you will ascend through Christ to your Father. Christ became man so that we might once again become gods by grace. What did He say? “I am the way.” What is this way? It is the way that returns man to God.
What is man’s destination, and what should his return be? “Grant me the longed-for homeland; make me once more a citizen of Paradise.” What does the funeral service say? It says this as they lower the coffin, chanting over the departed: today it is my turn, tomorrow yours, and the next day another’s. “May I also find, through metanoia—through repentance—the way of return.” He who came preached metanoia and proclaimed repentance in His name. In this way, a person finds the road of return. Metanoia is the way back, the return itself. There is no other way. Before us stand the words: “I am the way. I am the life.”
If a person has no relationship with Christ, no relationship with His Mysteries, and no relationship with His Church, where does he have life? If Christ is life, and His Body and Blood are life, where can that person find life? You and I possess natural life, which animals, plants, and reptiles also possess. But I do not possess spiritual life; and if I do not have that life, how can I have a place among the souls of the living in heaven, unless I possess this life which is Christ, the way that leads us back above? Therefore, from the moment a person chooses to read and attend to the hymnography of the Church, he will immediately understand that he must follow it and shape his life accordingly.
Let no one imagine that being a Christian merely means being a good person. Who said that goodness is bad? But we are not doing what the Church tells us. Nor is it enough to say, “I went to the feast of the Entry and honored the Most Holy Theotokos by my presence.” Some people think in this way, as though saying, “You should consider it an honor that I am here among you.” Does the Most Holy Theotokos need us to go and honor her? What we need is a boundless sense of gratitude: “Thank You, my God. Thank you, my Most Holy Theotokos, for giving me an opportunity to draw near to you, to be warmed, to open my eyes, and to understand what your parents did, what you did, and what He did.” This is what you and I must see and understand. For unless a person goes back beyond the immediate event—
—he will find our Most Holy Theotokos as a little child beside her parents, who were burdened by a very serious matter for which they were not responsible: their childlessness and barrenness. At that time, under the Old Testament, this condition was regarded as a sin, and such people were considered accursed. Their gifts were not accepted in the Temple. Why? Because they had borne no child; they had produced no offspring of Israel, as it was said. So what did they do? They made a vow to their God and implored Him: “If You hear my prayer and give me a child, whether male or female, I will give the child to the Lord.”
If it were a boy, he would become a priest; if it were a girl, she would sweep the Church, the Temple. First and foremost, they were deeply troubled by their childlessness, even though they were not responsible for it. They had faith in their conscience, yet the Church of that time did not accept them. So they agreed that, since they had no children, they would separate: one would go into the wilderness of the Jordan, while the other remained at home. Where do we see anything like this today, when we are childless by deliberate choice? We are “autumn trees without fruit,” as Jude says in his epistle. Where do we see such repentance today? How far will this curse extend? What will become of the family and the nation?
when people do not want to become fellow workers with God, when they do not acknowledge God as almighty, and so forth? How far will they fall? And even in difficult circumstances, how many people neither adopt children nor carry such a decision through? How many take in children merely so that their name may live on, so that their property may remain under their name, or so that they may be called fathers or mothers? But Joachim and Anna had a child and gave her away. “I do not need her to close my eyes when I die; they will close by themselves. I do not need her for that.”
Nor did they need a child so that their estate and their name might remain behind. And if my own name does not survive, what great loss is that? It is like those who inscribe their names in sacred places so that they will be remembered. No—the important thing is for sin to be taken away from us. Do you understand what those elderly people did, when they had no hope of bearing another child? They went and gave away their little girl, leaving her among elderly men—a little girl who delighted in affection, who delighted in dolls, as we would say, and in all the things a small child desires. Do you understand what it means for a three-year-old girl to remain in such a cold environment?
How was she warmed there? How was she formed while deprived of her mother? Just leave a child there and you would burst into tears. How could these things happen? God had said, “Give her to Me, and I will undertake to care for her.” Who, then, considers sacrifices such as these, which God rewards so greatly and so profoundly? This is a most exalted and mysterious matter. A person can discover so much in the mystery of the Theotokos, yet all these things pass unnoticed. We go to the feast, celebrate the Most Holy Theotokos, exchange greetings and say, “Good to see you,” but in the end we receive no moral benefit from any of it. The Most Holy Theotokos is the person within whom God and man were united.
She is the bridal chamber—the place of union between Bridegroom and bride. If someone wishes to understand this mystery, especially in its depths, let him read the illumined words of the author of the Akathist Hymn. There he will surrender himself; there he will find peace; there he will be overwhelmed by the mystery of what took place. This is why I remind you to pay close attention to this person and to follow her, asking the Most Holy Theotokos for strength and grace. For through the Theotokos, God descended and became man; and through Him who was born of the Theotokos, man ascended so as to become god by grace. How can this be?
God of God.
Today we place this person, who brought God down to earth, between ourselves and Him. The Most Holy Theotokos does not intercede before God in the abstract; she intercedes before Christ. “Intercede with Him who was born from you, O Lady of the world; become our mediatrix.” It is before Him that she intercedes. And the Protestants, the Euchites, and even some of our own people should not take offense because Paul writes to Timothy, “There is one mediator between God and men.” One mediator. But can you tell me who mediates between human beings and Christ? Between the faithful and God, Christ is the mediator. But between Christ and the faithful, can you tell me who the mediator is? The Theotokos is the mediatrix: “Intercede with Him who was born from you.”
Everything God—or Christ—accomplished, He accomplished through her. The Theotokos therefore intercedes with Him who was born from her: “O Lady of the world, become our mediatrix.” That is her place. For this reason we must thank her. This was also revealed in Jacob’s dream: she is the ladder by which God descended and by which we ascend. Christ became man, lived among us, and was taken up; He is now at the right hand of the Father, having become, as Scripture says, our forerunner. The great Mystery, then, is the Theotokos, through whom this was accomplished. Concerning what we are discussing—God’s descent and man’s ascent—I found a passage...
from Saint Gregory the Theologian.
He says this: “God had to descend to us, and we had to ascend.” God descended to us. He descended, and we ascended. Had He not descended, we could never have ascended. He condescended to us. How should we understand the statement that God came down to earth? Some people speak as though He simply left one place for another. But listen to the Church: He was both in Paradise with the thief and upon the throne; He was here and in the tomb; He was everywhere. Truly, He is everywhere present and fills all things. He is in the Church.
God remained seated upon His throne, yet stretched His hand down and said, “Take hold of Me, and I will raise you up,” without ever leaving His throne. Christ is this stretching down of His hand, while He still remains upon the throne. He stretched His hand down, and all who take hold of Christ will be drawn and lifted up by Him. Listen, then, to what this illumined man says: “On the one hand, God had to descend to us.” God had to come down to us because we could not ascend. “And on the other hand, we had to ascend.” We too had to rise. Do you remember a beautiful scene like this on Sinai? God descended upon Sinai.
It was thousands of feet high, yet Moses also ascended Sinai, and there they met. God did not descend all the way to the bottom; Moses also went up, and they met somewhere between. Do you understand the further moral lesson? You too must move; you too must be willing; you too must reach upward. Then reconciliation, sanctification, and divine help will come. If you, O man, do not contribute what lies within your power—your own willing assent—God cannot help you. God does not do what you yourself are able to do. But what you cannot do...
In the depths of despair, as I have often heard either by telephone or face to face, a person cries, “I am lost.” Call upon the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Second Coming, the Resurrection, the Antichrist, the Annunciation—“I beg you, help me!” You will see: help will come immediately. In a fraction of a second you will feel the noose Satan has placed around you begin to loosen. Whether it came through inattention or by some other means, you will immediately feel relief, and things will begin to change at once. But put this to the test. God is waiting for it. You are capable of doing this. Give Him grounds to act; give Him the occasion.
He will help you, but you must do what you can. Thus, Saint Gregory says, God had to descend, but man also had to ascend. In the miracle of the raising of Lazarus, what I am telling you appears very clearly. “Lazarus, come forth!” Lazarus did not come out by himself; the Lord called him forth. Even though his sister had said, “He has been dead four days; do not do this—he already stinks, for he has been dead four days,” the Lord spoke, and she remained there and watched. Then she saw her brother come out, still bound. “Loose him,” Christ said, “and free his hands.” You might ask: He brought him back from Hades, yet brought him out bound—could He not also have freed his hands? You could not bring him back from Hades; I did that. But you can untie his hands. Do we understand?
“God had to descend to us,” he says, “and we had to ascend.” And what would result? “Thus communion between God and human beings would come about,” with each side contributing what is fitting to it. “But as long as each remains in its own place”—if God had not been moved by love to descend, or if man, because of his egoism, refused to rise—God would have remained in His exalted glory. For He emptied Himself in kenosis; He humbled Himself and accepted humiliation. God clothed Himself in the dust of our humanity; the Master became a servant, taking the form and humility of a servant. If each had remained in its own place, the one would have remained in His exalted height.
He would have remained King and God, lacking nothing, while the other—the sinful world—would have remained below, humbled and disgraced, “deprived of the twofold sharing in goodness and love for mankind.” God would have remained in His place and man in his filth below, and thus God’s love for mankind would not have been manifested toward him. If the one, through egoism, had not descended, or the other, through egoism, had not responded and risen, everything would have remained as it was. Sadly, this is what happens to many people whose egoism will not let them move. It also happens to many who are considered learned but who, for some reason, are ignorant of these matters.
Yesterday, while returning from the Holy Mountain in the boat, I met a driver who had taken goods by truck from Thessaloniki to Karyes. He approached me because he had seen me at the monastery, up above the arsanas where we had disembarked, and had heard my name. He came over to speak with me and told me something else about some fine young men studying here in Athens.
He told me how he had lived in darkness and how his eyes were opened. “I was in darkness—not because there was no light around me, but because of my own egoism. I thought I knew everything, that I was not like other people, that I was not like that bad priest or that bishop, and that I was perfectly all right and needed nothing more.” Because of this ignorance and egoism, he said...
“I was losing my happiness and my peace—the very things I have found today, the joy I now possess. I still face hardships; I sweat, grow tired, and suffer. Yet nothing troubles me—not even the thought that I will die or what may happen. Nothing. Someone within me holds my whole being together. It is like a hand within me in the depths of winter, Mr. Panagopoulos. I did not know this reality; I knew nothing of it. Yet I used to find satisfaction in condemning it, merely to give an answer to my conscience.” He told me this in his own words. This is what the conscience often does: when we are about to do something crooked, it tells us plainly, “This is not right.” But we search for excuses. That is how the world lives.
“This is life today; circumstances are difficult,” people answer, while the conscience cries out, flashes a red warning light, and says, “What you are doing is wrong. You are killing your children; you are stealing; you are doing this or that. It is wrong. God does not forgive such a thing without repentance.” Yet you try to cover the conscience with bandages and poultices to dull it. It is useless. This man’s account made a deep impression on me; it was yet another confirmation of what I have learned through experience in these matters. Saint Maximus the Confessor says: “The soul can never stretch forth toward knowledge unless God Himself, making use of His condescension, touches it and raises it up to Himself.”
No soul can do this—not Solomon, not Paul, not anyone else. Unless God in His love for mankind descended and cast light upon the human condition, “the soul could never stretch forth toward the knowledge of God.” Notice that he does not say merely that it might be unable; he says it cannot—“unless God Himself, making use of His condescension, touches it and raises it up to Himself.” God bends down to the soul, takes hold of it, and raises it near Himself, taking it with Him. Yet the soul resists and refuses. We have become so entangled in sin and so distorted that we disdain the great honor Christ offers us: to bring us near Him and take us with Him.
Indeed, we take pains to bury the very effort He made. And today, as you know, a great struggle is under way to drive away this light, to cover up the light that comes to visit every human being. Christ, it says, is the light “which enlightens every man coming into the world.” Yet man deliberately loves darkness rather than light. For if he comes to the light, takes the Gospel in his hands, and receives the teachings and preaching of Christ, his evil deeds will be exposed; his lawless life, his double life, will be exposed—and he does not want that. But the darkness closes in on you. Where will I go? Where will I go? Where will they take you and me? Where can I go? Where can I escape?
If only man could understand that he is like a tiny mouse inside a great barrel, leaping and jumping about within it. Jump as much as you like; soon I will lift the plank, give you a toss, and throw you to the cat. O man, go on—but where will you go? Where will you go, O man? Man says, “You went to the moon; you landed on the moon.” God allowed him to go to the moon so that he might marvel at God’s majesty, because man himself has made nothing. Man is not creative; he did not create anything. Man is not a creator; he is an inventor. Man does not create. All those who persecuted God made discoveries; I too have made discoveries, but I have created nothing.
Everything that comes into being is multiplication, not creation. Things remain as God first made them. Human beings beget human beings, donkeys beget donkeys, mules beget mules, birds beget birds, fish beget fish, dogs beget dogs, and wolves beget wolves. You do nothing beyond that. Have you made anything new? Amaranth produces amaranth, cabbages produce cabbages, lettuces produce lettuces, apple trees produce apples, carob trees produce carobs, and springs bring forth water. What have you brought forth, O man? What have you created? It is all multiplication. You made your way to the moon and landed there. “Great are You, O Lord, and wondrous are Your works, and no word will suffice to sing the praise of Your wonders.” That should make you feel small; you should lose yourself before such majesty and be ashamed that thousands of years had to pass before you could reach the moon. Why did you not go yesterday? Why did you not know these things yesterday?
You have existed for so long, and yet you count this as proof of your cleverness. Do you see what man comes to? He pulls a cord here and a thousand blinds come down. “Amazing! Look what I have done!” Really? Is the one who placed them there behind the wall nothing? Where did you find them? Is the one who made them nothing? “Oh, but what place is there for my father, my grandfather, or the hands that installed them here? I am the important one!” That is what we are like: “We are angels; we have landed on the moon!” Yet man has not come down to earth, and if he does not come down to earth—if he does not humble himself—woe to him. It would have been better for him not to have been born.
And so, my beloved, the feast of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple is connected with the coming of our Christ into the world. Throughout these days, we should pay close attention and reflect on what God has done in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ through the Theotokos. A feast normally has an apolytikion and a kontakion. They draw upon events connected with the feast, or with the Saint whose feast it is, but express them in a condensed form. You know this.
We chant the apolytikion of the Theotokos, or we speak about it. Whether we have entered deeply into what it says is another matter. None of us has done so fully. Since we are discussing this subject, then, allow me to bring its meaning to the surface. Let us begin briefly with the apolytikion. It says: “Today is the prelude of God’s good pleasure.” What does this mean? It means that which God was pleased to do. And what was God pleased to do? “While we were yet sinners,” He was pleased to send His Son into the world. This was God’s good pleasure, His will. Today, then, it begins to be fulfilled; it begins to take on flesh and bones.
This is the unfolding of God’s good pleasure. “Today is the prelude of God’s good pleasure”—the very beginning. In a few years Christ will come. In the present feast, the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) is three years old, and another eleven years must pass before the Angel brings her the announcement. That happened when she was about fourteen years old. “Today,” then, my friends, “is the prelude of God’s good pleasure.” What God was pleased to do for mankind has begun to dawn. The Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) is the morning star that announces the coming day. We shall no longer live in the shadow of death. “And the proclamation of the salvation of mankind.” Through her departure from home, the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) is saying: “Look, my entrance into the Holy of Holies announces your salvation.”
“The salvation of mankind,” because Christ is the Savior of the world, as I told you earlier. “In the temple of God, the Virgin appears openly”; she enters, “and foretells Christ to all.” “I am going in, and Christ is coming after me”: she announces Christ beforehand to us. “To her let us also cry aloud with a mighty voice.” Now, you understand the words, “Let us cry aloud with a mighty voice.” But why cry out to her as well? Because Christ came for her too. Christ came for her too. She herself said so in the ode. You know the ninth ode.
“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” The Lord saves her too. No one is without sin. God alone is able to save. The One who has no need of salvation is the Savior. He who belongs to an order beyond our own was conceived in a manner beyond nature. That is why the Savior of the human race was conceived in the wondrous way we know: not according to the natural manner, but “of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary.” He was not conceived by a man, through the will of the flesh or through sensual pleasure; for if the Savior had been conceived by man, He would not be the Savior of sinners as well.
Saint Gregory Palamas says this. Otherwise, He would have been an ordinary man who himself needed healing. This is why He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, so that He did not bear the burden of ancestral sin. He was Life itself.
As we have said before when speaking about the Nativity of Christ, we see here a reversal in the manner of conception and birth. The genealogy says, “Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob,” and to the very end it presents the man as the one who begets. It says that Abraham begot Isaac; it does not say that Sarah gave birth to him. It says that Isaac begot Jacob; it does not say that Rebecca gave birth to him. Jacob begot Judah and his brothers; it does not say that Rachel gave birth to them. But when it reaches Joseph, the supposed end of the genealogy and the husband of Mary, it says, “of whom Christ was born.” Until this point, men were said to beget, and now a woman gives birth? Here the order is reversed.
Let us look at it carefully. It says: “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: after His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit.” Here we have another manner: a place beyond nature and a manner of conception beyond nature. He is born of a woman. But how are human beings normally begotten? The man begets; and what does the woman do? The man’s seed bears the principle of life, but it does not possess womanhood. The woman does not have seed. She receives what is entrusted to her and brings it forth. This is the wondrous thing that God’s dispensation accomplished in the person of our Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy). And so she too, being one of us, one of sinful humanity, says: “To her let us also…”
“…cry aloud with a mighty voice.” Who says these things? The Church says them. Could someone who did not bear the Spirit write in this way? Such a person would write sentimentally: “Come, let us sing hymns to God.” Are these holy writers outside the truth? Not at all; they are within it. The Theotokos simply had no personal sins of her own. Yet she bore the burden of ancestral sin, and she herself said so, as I told you, in the ninth ode, in the hill country of Judah. “Rejoice, fulfillment of the Creator’s dispensation.” It was God’s dispensation, and today His will begins to be fulfilled as you enter the temple; soon afterward we shall have that wondrous conception, and all that follows. Our Christ is called the Son of Man. Why is He called the Son of Man?
My name is Efstathios, son of Athanasios; I am the son of human parents. But Christ has no father according to His humanity; He has only a mother. And according to His divinity, He has only a Father and no mother. Therefore He is rightly called the Son of Man. According to His humanity He is without father; according to His divinity He is without mother; and He is without genealogy. Melchizedek was His type in the Old Testament. He has neither beginning of days nor end. Unless man bows down in humility, he will not understand these things. This, then, is the divine dispensation, an act of God’s saving economy. That is the apolytikion. The kontakion says: “The most pure temple of the Savior.” We say that God is in the Church, in the temple.
Yet He does not dwell in temples made by human hands, as Scripture says. The true temple in which God dwells is the human person, the human soul. As Spirit, He dwells in the human soul. But where did God become fully man? Where did He dwell and receive hospitality? In the womb of the Theotokos. The kontakion therefore presents her as a temple: “the most pure temple.” And although she bore the burden of ancestral sin, the Holy Spirit purified the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy). Thus she is “the most pure temple, the precious bridal chamber and Virgin.” The bridal chamber is the place where bridegroom and bride are united. Within herself, the Theotokos brought about the union of man and God. And yet she remained a Virgin. This troubles many who approach the matter only through rational thought
and scientific investigation. You may say to me: “A Virgin—how did she give birth, if that is what you believe? And how did she remain a Virgin afterward?” If you look at the images and events that foreshadow this mystery, perhaps you will understand. Consider this: “Eve received the word of the evil one and brought forth death.” While still a virgin, Eve received from the evil one and brought forth death. Mary too, while remaining a Virgin, received from the Good One and brought forth Life. How did she lend her nature to Christ? What did she give Him? She gave Him His humanity. And how had she herself come from man? In the beginning, Adam lent his side for Eve, and from it she was made human.
Here, Eve—the New Eve—lends her humanity and brings forth the New Adam. What is so strange about that? Then the virgin Adam brought forth the virgin Eve and remained a virgin. Here the Virgin brought forth Christ, the New Adam, and remained a Virgin. It is a wondrous mystery.
Thank you.
But if you say that no child can come from a woman without a man, do not tell me such things. Seriously, who was Adam’s mother? And who was his father? Either we have no answer, or else you believe that you come from the ape, and so forth. If we reject Adam, then there is nothing for us to discuss, because I do not swallow such nonsense. And that is just as well, because if I called you a monkey now, you would pick up your chair and leave. Be careful how you speak. But if you tell me that you come from the ape, then what am I to say? Why do you insist on it? To remove God from the picture!
You degrade yourself by claiming to be the descendant of an ape! Why should I be descended from the ape? Why could the ape not instead be a kind of caricature of man? But neither is the case. The ape is a creature, one of God’s creations. “The most pure temple of the Savior, the precious bridal chamber and Virgin, the sacred treasury of the glory of God, is today brought into the house of the Lord, bringing with her the grace that is in the divine Spirit.” She is the one whom the angels of God praise, for she is more honorable than the Cherubim, more glorious than the Seraphim—higher, higher, higher beyond them all. Ah, what an honor!

Λοιπόν λέγει: «Χριστός γεννάται, δοξάσατε». Αυτό είναι παρμένο από τη δοξολογία που έκαναν οι άγγελοι, όταν εγεννήθη. Από εκεί αντλούμε. Οι πρώτοι που ύμνησαν τη γέννηση είναι οι άγγελοι. Δεν ξέραμε τίποτα, ούτε εκείνοι που ήσαν τότε ήξεραν τίποτα. Αυτοί που ήξεραν ήταν οι άγγελοι. Στους αγγέλους, λοιπόν, το λέει. Και σε κάθε πιστόν που ζει την αγγελική αυτή στιγμή της ζωής μας, καλεί λοιπόν μαζί με τους αγγέλους να δοξάσουμε, διότι ο Χριστός γεννάται. «Χριστός εξ ουρανών, απαντήσατε». Θα απαντήσουμε ποτέ τον Χριστό;
Την περιουσία, για το όνομα, να μείνει πίσω. Κι αν δεν μείνει το όνομα το δικό μου, έχασε η Βενετιά βελόνι. Όπως ορισμένοι σε ιερά μέρη αποθανατίζουν το όνομά τους, να μείνει πίσω. Όχι, να φύγει η αμαρτία από πάνω. Ξέρετε τι έκαναν αυτοί οι ηλικιωμένοι άνθρωποι, χωρίς να έχουν φόντα να φέρουν κάποιον άλλον; Να πάνε να δώσουν το παιδί και να το αφήνουν μέσα σε άντρες, οι γέροι, ηλικιωμένους ανθρώπους, μια κοπελίτσα που γελάει από τις περιποιήσεις, που γελάει από τις κούκλες, όπως θα λέγαμε, που γελάει από όλα αυτά τα πράγματα που θέλει ένα μωρό. Και ξέρετε τι θα πει ένα κορίτσι τριών ετών να μείνει μέσα σε ένα τέτοιο παγερό περιβάλλον;
Παστάς, δηλαδή νυμφώνας, νυμφίου και νύμφης. Αν ερμηνεύσει το πράγμα, αν μάλιστα κατ’ εξοχήν θελήσει κανείς, θα διαβάσει εκείνα τα φωτισμένα λόγια αυτού που συνέγραψε τον Ακάθιστον Ύμνον. Εκεί θα παραδοθεί, εκεί θα γαληνέψει, εκεί θα διαλυθεί. Το τι γίνεται. Γι’ αυτό σας το θυμίζω. Το πρόσωπο αυτό να το προσέξετε και να παρακολουθήσετε, ζητώντας της Υπεραγίας τη δύναμη και τη χάρη. Διότι διά της Θεοτόκου εκατέβηκε, έγινε άνθρωπος. Ο άνθρωπος, διά του τεχθέντος εκ της Θεοτόκου, ανέβηκε να γίνει Θεός. Πώς γίνεται αυτό το πράγμα;
Φροντίζουμε μάλιστα αυτή την προσπάθεια που έκανε να την θάψουμε, και σήμερα μάλιστα ξέρετε τι αγώνας γίνεται να φύγει αυτό το φως, να σκεπαστεί αυτό το φως που έρχεται να επισκεφτεί κάθε άνθρωπο. Χριστός, λέει, είναι το φως, «ὃ φωτίζει πάντα ἄνθρωπον ἐρχόμενον εἰς τὸν κόσμον», αλλά θεληματικά ο άνθρωπος αρέσκεται στο σκότος παρά στο φως. Διότι αν θα έρθει στο φως και πάρει το Ευαγγέλιο στο χέρι και πάρει τα διδάγματα και τα κηρύγματα του Χριστού στο χέρι, θα ελεγχθούν τα κακά του έργα, θα ελεγχθεί η παράνομη ζωή, η παράλληλη ζωή του αυτού θα ελεγχθεί και δεν θέλει. Σου σκοτεινιάζει, τρίβεται, λύχνε, πού θα πάω; Πού θα πάω; Πού θα σε πάνε και θα με πάνε; Πού θα πάω, πού θα ξεφύγω;
Ό,τι γίνεται είναι πολλαπλασιασμός, δεν είναι δημιουργία. Όπως ο Θεός τα έφτιαξε το πρώτον, έτσι είναι. Ο άνθρωπος να κάνει ανθρωπάκια, ο γαϊδαρός γαϊδουράκια, το μουλάρι μουλαράκια, το πουλί πουλάκια, το ψάρι ψαράκια, το σκυλί σκυλάκια, ο λύκος λυκάκια. Δεν κάνεις τίποτα άλλο. Έφτιαξες τίποτα καινούργιο; Τα βλήτα θα βγάζουν βλήτα, τα λάχανα λάχανα, τα μαρούλια μαρούλια, οι μηλιές μήλα, κερατιές κεράτια, οι πηγές νερό. Τι έφερες, άνθρωπε, τι δημιούργησες; Πολλαπλασιασμός γίνεται. Εφεύρεσαι στο φεγγάρι, προσεληνώθης εκεί. «Μέγας εἶ, Κύριε, καὶ θαυμαστὰ τὰ ἔργα σου, καὶ οὐδεὶς λόγος ἐξαρκέσει πρὸς ὕμνον τῶν θαυμασίων σου». Ίσα ίσα πρέπει να γίνεις τόσος, να χαθείς προς αυτό το μεγαλείο και να ντρέπεσαι που έπρεπε να περάσουν χιλιάδες χρόνια να πας στο φεγγάρι. Πώς δεν πήγα από χτες, πώς δεν τα ήξερες από χτες αυτά;
μεγαλοφώνως βοήσωμεν». Ποιος τα λέει αυτά; Η Εκκλησία τα λέει αυτά. Είναι δυνατόν άνθρωπος μη πνευματοφόρος να γράψει έτσι; Θα έγραφε συναισθηματικά: «Κύριε, ελάτε να υμνήσουμε τον Θεό». Αυτοί είναι εκτός; Δεν είναι καθόλου εκτός, είναι εντός και απλώς δεν έχει υφ' εαυτής αμαρτίας. Το βάρος όμως του προπατορικού αμαρτήματος το έχει και το είπε η ίδια, όπως σας είπα, στην ενάτη ωδή, στην ορεινή πόλη Ιούδα. «Χαίρε, λοιπόν, της οικονομίας του Κτίστου η εκπλήρωσις». Οικονομία ήτανε και εκπληρώνεται το θέλημα του Θεού σήμερα, μπαίνοντας εσύ μέσα, και σε λίγο θα έχουμε τη σύλληψη την παράξενη αυτήν και λοιπά. Λέγεται ο Χριστός μας Υιός Ανθρώπου. Πώς το να λέγεται Υιός Ανθρώπου;
