Summary
Daniel’s vision and Christ’s reference to twelve legions reveal an innumerable angelic host serving God and participating in judgment. Scripture identifies Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael by name and presents archangels as leaders with authority among the nine traditional angelic orders. These biblical appearances show God acting through angels to guide, warn, defend, heal, and prepare humanity for His saving purposes.

People also ask how many angels there might be. No one knows—no one except God. Much has been said about the number of the angels, and what we are told leads us to acknowledge that they are innumerable. For example, when Daniel speaks in chapter seven about that beautiful vision he saw, he says that a throne was set in place and the Ancient of Days took His seat, and that heaven fled from before His face. Then he continues: “A thousand thousands ministered to Him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him.”
From this we understand that they were sent to gather everyone for the Judgment, and that they are legions, as they were called. How many might there be? I would like to believe that if everyone in the world today—about four billion people, according to the statistics—were to become Christian, God would have a guardian angel to give each of them, with angels still left over. Surely He would. For every person who is baptized receives a guardian angel. The unbaptized person does not yet have an angel. The baptized person has an angel who watches over him throughout his life and stands beside him in all his good deeds.
He is also present, unfortunately, at all a person’s evil deeds, except for sin against nature. At that, he turns his face away. At this sin of Sodom and Gomorrah, the angel turns away his face; he cannot bear to look upon it. The implication is that he can understand all the other sins in the light of human weakness. But he cannot excuse this perversion. It has no proper place in man and ought never to exist. And you know, this sin is found even between husbands and wives—woe to them on the Day of Judgment, both when they consent to it and when they demand it. So, as I was saying, the angel never leaves the person.
That is why, when we wish someone well, we often say, “May an angel go before you and guide your steps; may an angel of peace accompany your undertaking.” If only we could understand this more deeply—if we could see that in everything we do, in everything we discuss or decide, and in everything we think, secretly or openly, an angel is beside us and sees it. Then we would not do such things, or at least we would not fall so readily; and even if we did fall, we would struggle. But now we act as though nothing were happening, as though no one saw us. “Whatever we said was just between us.” Yes, of course—just between us! “You were the only ones talking; let bygones be bygones. You said it, and no one else heard.” Yet our Holy Church...
In former times, through her iconography—which seeks to speak to us even through beauty and to remind us—our Holy Church placed above the Holy Doors the image of a hand writing, an ear, and an eye. Who is it that writes? When a person does something good, who records it? Two witnesses record every good deed: his angel records it on God’s behalf, and his conscience records it. Basil the Great says that when people fast on Wednesdays and Fridays, angels themselves record those who fast in every Church.
So, when some small pleasure tempts you, say to it, “Give that up, and the angel will record your struggle”; otherwise you are entirely absent from this contest. Thus, according to this great Father, an angel is indeed present. When a person does evil, three witnesses record it. There is yet another recorder: the angel writes, the conscience writes, and the devil writes as well. When a person does good, the devil does not record it, because of his malice; he does not want any mention made of the good a person does. But he records in detail every evil deed. This reminds a person to be watchful. “For all these things God will bring you into judgment,” Scripture says to the young through Ecclesiastes...
in the tenth chapter. It says, “Do whatever you desire.” For, as you know, we commit most of our foolish acts while we are young. That is why David said, “Remember not the sins of my youth, O Lord.” You remember that, do you not? Now we have grown old, and perhaps many of us do worse things than the young do. Children do nothing compared with some of the things we adults do.
We have gained some experience, and so we ought to remain mindful of this guardian angel. A person also takes comfort when he lies down at night with the sense that a spirit holding a sword stands guard over us while we sleep and snore. This is especially so if he has first said, as I told you, that beautiful prayer of the Church to the angel, which we read at Compline: “O Angel, holy Angel, appointed to guard my wretched soul,” and so forth. In any case, the angels are countless. Our Redeemer Himself also said something important about their number. Do you remember when Peter took it upon himself to defend Him on the night Judas and the others came against Him? He drew his sword and cut off Malchus’s ear. What did the Lord say to Peter? Do you remember? He told him to put his sword back into its sheath, and so forth. “And do not think that I am alone,” He said.
“Do you think that I cannot now appeal to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?” Twelve legions! “Can I not ask them to come?” He says. “But this is how it must happen now. Put the sword away, and bring the young man here so that we may heal his ear.” And He healed his ear. From these names and descriptions, then, we draw what conclusions we can. I do not know what the angels are like. But, as I told you, what they are like is not what concerns us. What concerns us is that this spiritual, angelic world exists. Woe to us if it did not! Woe to us—the devil would have torn us apart. I am speaking here now, and you are listening peacefully. If there were no angels guarding us, nothing would remain in order. My words would be scattered, another person would lose his senses, and...
in a fraction of a second someone would erupt like a firework because of the devil, malice, and hatred. Satan rages, but the angel drives him back, restrains him, casts him out, and keeps him in check, in proportion to a person’s spiritual struggle, the purity he possesses, and the grace of the Holy Spirit granted to him. The reason for this feast, and the subject set before us by our Church, is the archangels—especially Raphael and Michael. We speak about them, and through them Raphael and then all the other heavenly powers are brought before us. The word “archangel,” the title “archangel,” appears twice in Scripture.
It appears twice in Scripture. One instance is at the Annunciation to our Most Holy Theotokos: the angel, the Archangel Gabriel, was sent to Mary, and so forth. The other is in the Epistle of Jude, which I mentioned earlier. There the Archangel Michael contended with the devil, who sought to enter the body of Moses, make him appear alive, and have him speak things contrary to the truth. Michael struggled against him and said, “The Lord rebuke you, devil.” If you search the Scriptures, you will find the word “archangel” in these two passages.
It is mentioned in one other place as well—forgive me. It occurs in the reading from the Apostle, in the First Epistle to the Thessalonians, chapter four, verse sixteen: “with the trumpet and the voice of an archangel,” when the Second Coming takes place and the dead are raised. That is another place where we find it. The other passage says, “But Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil, disputed about the body of Moses,” and so forth, as I told you earlier. In the Apocalypse, in chapter eight, verse two, I have found—and you should also have come across—a reference to seven leading angels: “And I saw the seven angels who stand before God.” They stood before God—not little cherubs, but angels. Clearly, these must be archangels who, as I said earlier, have authority over the lesser angels. For if Michael is not the Chief Commander, he cannot order the others, “To your posts! To your posts! Go on, move!” This shows—rather, proves—that they have authority over the other, lesser angels. This is also stated in chapter twelve, as I told you: “And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels.” There Michael led and directed the other angels. Now then!
More generally, angels are also protectors of nations. Our Greece, for example, has an angel. It also has saints, of course, such as Saint Demetrios, Saint Achillios, and other saints who guard the cities—provided there are believers. If there are no believers, their hands are bound; they can do nothing. That is why calamities befall us: cities and peoples defend themselves for a time and then give way. Have you read the Life of Saint Demetrios and seen what is related there? One morning, a man was going to church. On the opposite side of the road, he saw two figures approaching, one leaving the city and the other entering it. They greeted one another, and the man overheard their conversation. One said, “Bless, Saint Achillios.” This was Achillios of Larissa, that great Father who took part in the First Ecumenical Council and performed the miracle before Arius, causing oil to flow from a stone. Achillios replied, “Greetings, Demetrios, martyr of Christ.” It was Saint Demetrios. “Where are you going?” “My Lord has instructed me,” he said...
“to abandon my city.” And he left Larissa, which a few days later was captured by the Turks. “And I, too, alas, have been instructed by my Lord to abandon my city.” A few days later, Thessaloniki was captured by the Turks. They withdraw; they are like the angels. If you read ancient history and go far enough back, you will find the account written by Josephus, the Jewish historian, concerning the destruction of Jerusalem—specifically its great destruction by Titus in AD 70. One million one hundred thousand Jews were killed. There were not enough crosses on which to crucify them, and they nailed them to the wall as tanners nail out goatskins. Then the angels were heard saying from the Temple of Solomon...
“Let us depart from here! We have no more work here!” For the city was plowed under—utterly laid waste—and nothing remained. Then voices were heard, angels speaking to one another: “Let us leave this place; let us depart from here.” I have also found—and you can find it too, if you have not already—in the tenth chapter of Daniel and in chapter twelve, verse one, where the Archangel Michael is presented in opposition to the prince of the Persians: “The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me for twenty-one days.” He resisted him and held him back for twenty-one days. “And behold, Michael, one of the chief princes...
came to help me,” he says. “And I left him there with the prince of the kingdom of Persia.” He left the Archangel there to deal with him. Open the Book of Daniel and look at chapter ten, verse thirteen, and chapter twelve, verse one. In Scripture, in the Old and New Testaments, three archangels are presented by name. We know three angels. We know Michael, who fulfilled the role I have described. We know him from the Epistle of Jude, verse nine. We know Gabriel by name, mentioned in Luke, chapter one, verses nineteen to twenty-six, at the Annunciation. And we also know Raphael...
from Tobit in the Old Testament, chapter twelve, verse fifteen. These are the ones we know from Scripture. Tradition, however, also reminds us of and presents others. Nine angelic orders are described in various ways: Thrones, Cherubim, Seraphim, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Angels, and Archangels. There are nine orders. Nine archangels are also named, each in a sense a chief commander. Raphael appears among the Thrones. Among the Cherubim...
there is Salathiel; among the Seraphim, Akapsael; among the Dominions, Uriel; among the Virtues, Samuel; among the Powers, Chazael; among the Principalities, Pharmuel; among the Archangels, Gabriel; and among the Angels, Michael. Their names have positive meanings connected with the role each fulfills in the order where he is appointed. Raphael is interpreted as “guide of what is visible.” Salathiel means “nous of God.” Akapsael means “immortal.” Uriel means “chosen protector.”
Samuel means “the watchful one of God.” Chazael means “chosen.” Pharmuel means “healer of God.” Gabriel means “mighty nous of God,” and Michael means “order of God.” There is also another interpretation of Gabriel’s name: “God and man.” Perhaps it was for this reason, and because of the ministry he offered in the Incarnation of Jesus, who is God and man, that the angel whose name corresponded to that Mystery—“God and man”—was sent. As I bring this subject to a close, I do not know whether you have ever considered how often we encounter God...
helping, acting, guiding, and intervening beforehand through the angels. In the Old Testament alone, I have gathered more than forty instances in which an angel appears on the scene and reveals to each of us the role of these good spirits. Allow me to show you where this begins. The angelic world first appears in connection with Lucifer, far back at the beginning. There again we see Lucifer fall, together with a third of the angels, while another angel comes forward and assumes a decisive role. So the angels are there, and their work is made manifest.
Then, going far back—eighteen hundred years—we come to the Patriarch Abraham, whom an angel led out of the land of the Chaldeans. God told him to leave, but an angel was sent to accompany him afterward. We also see this when Abraham was called to sacrifice his son. An angel called out behind him and, as it were, stayed his hand, crying, “Stop!” The angel removed the child from the sacrifice upon the altar. Abraham turned and saw the ram mentioned in Holy Scripture, as though God were saying, “I have provided something for you to sacrifice; you are not to sacrifice your own child.” The typological prefiguration goes only this far. You also remember what happened in Abraham’s family, when Sarah could bear no children. It seems...
...that she blamed her barrenness on her husband, saying that he was the cause, as we ourselves so often do: “It is your fault, not mine. You are to blame,” and so on. And it seems that she gave in—perhaps because she wanted to be called a mother—and allowed him to go in to one of her maidservants, the woman called Hagar. Hagar lay with her master, conceived, and gave birth to Ishmael, the father of the Hagarenes. Hagar, Hagarene; Ishmael, Ishmaelites. We are descended from the free woman, not from the bondwoman. We are descended from Isaac; they are descended from Hagar. Do you understand?
Once the child was born, Sarah became jealous. The devil stirred up trouble, and Sarah drove Hagar away. Hagar took the child in her arms and went out into the wilderness. But how could the child survive in the wilderness? They came to a place where there was no water, and the child was about to die of thirst. As she wept, suddenly an angel appeared, comforted her, and told her to humble herself and return. He also showed her where to find water for the child. An angel was present in the wilderness even then and ministered in that situation. Later another angel appeared when Jacob was fleeing from the wrath of his brother Esau, whose birthright he had taken. Once again, an angel helped him. Since I am recounting these events chronologically, there are further appearances of angels; I shall present them together and briefly.
Angels went and told Lot to take his family and leave. They came in the form of young men—beautiful young men. And what did the Sodomites do as soon as they saw them? They tried to break down Lot’s door and force their way inside so that they could commit their debauchery upon those young men. Then the elder came out—you should read this passage; it is remarkable—the elder Lot came out and said, “Do not do this to my guests.” He himself did not know they were angels; how could he have known? “Do not do it,” he said. “I will give you my daughters, who are virgins.” “No,” they said, “we want these men.” Then the angels struck them with blindness, so that they could no longer find the door. They were angels. You will find these events in the eighteenth chapter of Genesis. An angel also helped Moses at the Red Sea.
You encounter him there, assisting in that great Exodus. An angel also obstructed Balaam when he was traveling at the request of King Balak. You can read this in Numbers, chapters twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three, and twenty-four. It is a long and beautiful account: Balaam was going to curse Israel.
The angel stood in his path and stopped his donkey. Balaam kept beating the animal, unaware that an angel stood before him with a drawn sword raised above it. But the donkey could see the angel and stopped. Then the donkey spoke. It turned to him and said, “Have I ever done such a thing to you before?” And Balaam began conversing with the donkey. “No,” he answered. “Then now that I am doing this, do you understand nothing? Do you think I am doing it for no reason?”
“You have had me all these years. Have I ever done this before? Can you not understand that something is preventing me?” Then the revelation came: there stood the angel with his sword. “I am the one,” the angel told him, “who is hindering the animal. I am the one stopping the donkey. Your way is perverse. You will do what I tell you.” And you know what he told him afterward, and the rest of the account.
An angel also guided Joshua the son of Nun. “Are you with us, or with our enemies?” “I have been sent from above to teach you certain things.” Whenever we who wish to be Christians hear such passages, our nous—the spiritual mind—should immediately turn to their meaning. But many of us have never opened these books or read them, and so we do not know. This angel also buried the body of Moses, and the evil one tried to enter Moses’ body.
An angel also appeared to Joshua the son of Nun with a drawn sword. An angel appeared to Gideon as well. Did the angel not tell him to muster an army? Gideon would have to wage war. And as you know, in his humility Gideon did not accept this at first. He did not consider himself capable of doing such things. But the angel insisted that he would do it. “God says so.” “If God says so, then He will perform a miracle for me.” “What miracle do you want Him to perform?” “Here is my threshing floor. Tonight we shall place a fleece of wool upon it. If tomorrow the fleece is soaked with water while the entire threshing floor remains dry, then I shall believe that I truly am the one being sent, and that you are an angel of God who has come to tell me these things.” So they placed the fleece of wool there.
And this was the result: in the morning they wrung the fleece and drew a whole measure of water from it, while everything else was dry. This was a prototype—a typological prefiguration—of the Most Holy Theotokos: “the dew-laden fleece which Gideon foresaw.” And there are countless other such instances. Thus does the good God care for us human beings.

ότι επέρριπτε την ευθύνη της στειρώσεως στον σύζυγο. Ότι αυτός είναι η αιτία, όπως πολλές φορές το κάνουμε κι εμείς αυτό. «Εσύ φταις και δεν φταίω εγώ, φταις εσύ», κλπ. Και, ως φαίνεται, αυτή ενέδωσε, ήθελε να λέγεται και μητέρα, ξέρω γω, και ενέδωσε και του επέτρεψε να πάει με τη δούλη του, μία από αυτές που είχε, με την Άγαρ τη λεγομένη, η οποία, όταν συνήλθε με τον προϊστάμενο, μεταφορικώς συνέλαβε και γέννησε τον Ισμαήλ, τον πατέρα των Αγαρηνών. Άγαρ, Αγαρηνή, Ισμαήλ, Ισμαηλίτες. Εμείς είμεθα από την ελευθέρα, δεν είμαστε από τη δούλη. Εμείς είμεθα από τον Ισαάκ, αυτοί είναι από την Άγαρ. Καταλάβατε;
