Summary

The Christian life is presented as spiritual warfare whose true enemy is Satan, not the people who injure or oppose us. Baptism, confession, holy unction, holy water, and the Church’s prayers for the departed are described as means by which Christ cleanses, heals, and protects the faithful. The destruction of the swine illustrates how attachment to material interests can cause people to reject Christ even after witnessing a human being’s liberation.

Tonight, with God’s help, I would like to say something that may escape the notice of many of us, and which our Church always takes care to remind us of. You see, a Christian is in a state of war. He must know that the Christian has an enemy. It is not his neighbor, not the man who encroached on his property, not the man who robbed him, and not the man who slandered him.

The enemy is someone else—an enemy who seeks our soul. We have not identified this enemy as clearly as we should, and so we cannot expect sound judgment even from many who are called Christians. Why, you may ask? Because we have not looked deeply into the matter. We see ourselves and our fellow man; we see ourselves and our God. But we do not see ourselves and the devil who opposes us. We do not see him. And you know, when a man takes no account of his enemy or his strength, and does not know his movements, he naturally falls into his hands. Confessors would not have so much work, nor would we need them as frequently as we do now. Even if we imagine that we have a confessor waiting in the hall while we move about the other rooms of the house, we would need him every day, every moment. We would need him constantly present, because there is not a moment when we do not sin—and this is because we do not take this third person into account as much as we should. I dare say that if man wishes to be saved and to reach the destination appointed for him—that homeland which he lost

in the persons of Adam and Eve, namely Paradise—he must reach the place for which he prays through the Church: “Grant me the homeland I long for; make me once again a citizen of Paradise.” Man’s destiny is to become a citizen of Paradise. Here he is a stranger and a sojourner; here he is in exile. He is not meant to remain here. All these things will be destroyed; tomorrow they will pass away. “We look for new heavens and a new earth,” in which righteousness will dwell. If man wishes to return there, then, I dare say, perhaps he must learn more about Satan and less about Christ. For those who do not take this person into account, who pay no heed to him, fall into his hands. You know, nations that arm themselves

spend money not only on weapons, but also on propaganda and espionage. If possible, they penetrate the enemy’s headquarters to learn how the enemy thinks, discover how he operates, and uncover his plans; then they take the necessary security measures. John Chrysostom says that a man who knows nothing about the enemy easily falls into his snares. Therefore, when we do not know that Satan exists—or know it only imperfectly, not exactly as we should—it is natural for him to get us into his grasp, as the saying goes. If people knew that Satan exists, would they

see other people as enemies, or would they see them as instruments in the enemy’s hands? For there is only one enemy: Satan. The others are instruments in the enemy’s hands. A person who is not under Satan’s influence is never evil; he cannot harm you. When someone harms you, it is Satan who harms you through that instrument, through that human being, through that person. If a man understood this, had humility, and were willing to accept it, then when he saw someone plotting against his honor, his property, his very existence and personhood, he would see that man as a captive in Satan’s hands and would have compassion on him. Thank you.

If that person is freed from Satan’s influence, and Christ—or an angel—takes Satan’s place within him, everything will change. You will see that beast of a man, who never slept day or night but continually schemed to find some way to take revenge on you, come and kiss your feet. He will come and ask your forgiveness. The question, however, is how he can be freed from Satan’s influence. If a man has been taken captive, can you mistreat him? Not only do you have no right to do so; you must help him. If he is ill, you must give him medicine when needed; if he is naked, you must clothe him, care for him, and feed him. He is a sacred person.

This is a law and a standard of conduct among human beings—even among those who behave like beasts—how much more, then, in the sight of God? This is how a person ought to think. But as I have told you, we do not have a sound understanding of this. If man truly wished to learn about this enemy, he would immediately appreciate the work Christ accomplished in the world.

Ask someone, “Why did Christ come into the world?” and he does not know how to answer. Of course, when I say “someone,” I do not mean this absolutely, because many people do know the answer, and know it very well indeed. But the great majority of people—even those who are Christians—do not know why Christ came into the world. Christ came to destroy the works of Satan. That is why He came into the world.

Christ came to abolish Satan,

and death, which goes hand in hand with Satan. Does man know this? How are these things abolished? How is man freed from sin? And how can man, who because of death was bound for Hell and the abyss, turn back and go to Paradise instead? How do these things happen? Man must therefore study the reality of Satan’s existence. Then he will understand and appreciate what Christ has done for him, and he will see everything differently. Moreover, the man who comes to understand that Satan exists will appreciate Christ’s Church—the Orthodox Church. I make that distinction: the Orthodox Church. There are many churches in the world.

There ought to be only one, and in truth there is only one. Churches made by men do not have the power to resist Satan, destroy his works, and defeat him. Only Christ’s Church—the one Orthodox Church—has that power. If you examine her credentials, you will find that they reach back to that upper room, where the disciples received the Holy Spirit and the command to go to the nations and baptize those who believe in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. You will find that this is the only Church Satan takes seriously. Is he afraid of any of the so-called priests, clergy, and others belonging to the so-called churches? Is Satan afraid

of anyone in Protestantism or Papism? No. He fears only the Orthodox priest. Even if the priest is sinful, that makes no difference. The priest’s sinfulness and corruption concern the priest himself; they do not affect the ministry he performs or its power against Satan. Satan fears the Orthodox priest’s stole. If people understood this, each of them could recognize inwardly the work that the Church has offered until today and will continue to offer until the end of the age. She is the only Church able to help the human soul even beyond the grave. No other church possesses the sacrifice or prays for the human soul after death.

I do not know whether you realize that the Papists are the closest to us, are they not? Yet they do not possess the sacrifice.

Once a person departs this life, no one can help him. But we persist in helping the human soul until the end of the age. Those who question and doubt this will understand it only after they die—if they did not labor here as they should have, or if they left no one behind with the proper faith to help them there. Then they will understand the value of the Church and the role she played both in preparing them and in continuing to care for them until the end of the age. For I do not know whether you are aware that the record of every Orthodox soul is not closed at death, as are the records of all the other so-called religions.

For all heretics and all other people, the record is closed at death. But the Orthodox Christian’s record remains open—open—and it may be affected for good or for ill until the day of the Second Coming. The Orthodox Church watches over the person beyond the grave, until the Second Coming. She receives him when he is born; then she sends him forth when he falls asleep in the Lord; and afterward she continues to pray and intercede for him, in accordance with the help offered by those who remain behind. Thank you.

This is so for those who leave behind people—and the memory of such a life—that others will bless them and help them. Those left behind will consider it their necessary duty to help them, because the departed person was once their benefactor or helper. Only the ungrateful forget. Everyone else remembers and hastens to help in whatever way they can. The Orthodox Church is a great thing. The only one who properly understands her power and the work she performs is the devil, because he is directly and personally struck by it. That is why, as you may have noticed, the Church is attacked and will continue to be attacked. Even today the Church will be accused still more fiercely and will be officially persecuted.

Everything connected with the clergy is attacked, whether monasticism or the clergy themselves. You read in the newspapers what a war is being waged against the clergy. They do not speak about the others. There is such corruption among them that you would have to hold your nose and stop your ears, yet not a single discussion is held about it. Nor is there any discussion about any other church—not about Papism, Protestantism, or their clergy. Only the Orthodox are blamed for everything that goes wrong. Why? Because they alone have authority over unclean spirits.

The priest takes the child in his hands and anoints him with Chrism. He anoints the child’s feet and says, “I give you such grace and authority that you may tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy.” Of whom does he say this? He says it of that cloven-footed one.

He says these things about him—about the one who hates the clergy.

What Satan suffers in the Orthodox Church, he suffers nowhere else. For only the Orthodox Church possesses the command she received from Christ on the evening of the Resurrection: the authority to bind and to loose, and the work that this entails. I repeat, we do not have a sound understanding of this subject. That is precisely why we are cold toward our Church. Most of us, one might say, are indifferent, and we confine the Church’s events to a particular place and time. We often hear people ask, “Has the third bell rung?” Why? Do the events announced by the first and second bells not concern you?

What are those services? Whom do they speak about, and who is benefited by them? Do they simply fall into a void? Are you not edified by what takes place at Vespers and Matins (Orthros)? Do these things not concern you? Would you not like to hear the Six Psalms? Have you no connection with any of this?

Have you ever stopped to consider what the Orthodox Church is saying? This is why I tell you that a person needs to learn the wiles of Satan, who takes care to conceal himself and deceive people. Many do not even want to hear about him; they cross themselves and knock on wood.

A man sends another person to the devil; he sends his child, an object, a tool, an animal—he sends everyone and everything to the devil. We remember Satan often enough, and sometimes speak of him, when we are about to act as his agents and send someone to him from here. That is the only time we remember him. But we must come to know him from every side and understand who this third party is. “He is an evil thing,” people say. Not at all. Wickedness, and the harm it causes, arise from a person’s own disposition and intention. You must have no intention of doing evil. Satan may then suggest evil to you—he can certainly suggest it. But it is you who choose whether to carry it out, just as it is I who choose whether to carry it out. He does not compel me. He has never held a pistol to me and forced me to sin. Yet many people blame Satan even during Holy Confession.

“Satan made me do it.” Yes, Satan suggested it to you, but you were the one who jumped from the rock; you were the one who committed adultery. He suggested it, and you acted upon it. He did not hold a pistol to her and say, “Take some of this, or I will shoot you.” He suggested it to her, just as he suggests things to me; and I like the suggestion, consent to it, and act upon it. Then I stand accused alongside him. He alone is not to blame. I could look at the matter differently and understand that the more he tempts me, the more he can help me. For Satan truly serves as a whetstone. He is like the sharpening strop in a barber’s shop, upon which the barber sharpens his razor before shaving. Satan himself is not the evil. Sin is the evil; sin is the evil. Satan himself is not the evil.

Poison is not evil in itself, though it may appear so. Is poison not used in medicine? Of course it is. It is the same with Satan. Those who struggle spiritually must therefore know all these different aspects. For against whom am I to struggle? Against my evil self? But in what sense is my self evil? What makes it evil? What is wrong with this flesh? Why should this hand steal instead of giving? Someone is directing it. Who is directing it? The one who has entered within. If I have Christ within me, I will take twenty drachmas from my pocket and give them away. If I do not have Christ but have the devil within me, I will take twenty drachmas from someone else and put them into my own pocket. The hand is not to blame, nor is the human being as such. The blame lies with the one I do not know or recognize.

Here is an example. We were standing at a bus stop, waiting for the bus, when someone—a man or a woman, I do not remember—dropped five drachmas, a five-drachma coin. An elderly man standing ahead of me in the queue put his foot on the coin. He did not board the bus. He waited for the others to leave so that he could pick it up. Was his foot to blame? Should I cut off the foot? No, the foot was not to blame, but the one directing it. If that man had been filled with Christ and had the grace of the Holy Spirit within him, he would have said, “Someone dropped five drachmas here. Whose is it?” Then, whether it belonged to the little fellow standing ahead of him or to someone else nearby, he would have found the owner. In any case, it was not his. He should not have taken it.

I once read in a book of the Fathers about an obedient disciple who, returning from an errand, found a gold coin on the road and brought it to his elder. “Geronta, I found this on the road,” he said. “And why did you pick it up?” the elder asked. “Well, I found it,” he replied. “Is it yours?” “No.” “Then go and put it back where it was. Go and put it back where it was, since it does not belong to you. Why should it concern you whose it is? It is not yours, so you cannot take it.” The young disciple went back and replaced it where he had found it. If the person who had lost it later retraced his steps, searched for it, and found it, all well and good. But it was not yours. This is like another lesson taught by a wise old man—not one of those who teach children the easy way out.

As a boy, someone stole money from an elderly man and was found out. The old man said to him, “George, how could you do this?” “I did not know the money was yours, Grandfather,” he replied. “But did you not know it was not yours? You may not have known it was mine. You may not have known that this jacket was mine—very well, I accept that. But did you not know that the jacket was not yours?” This is how a person should think. Instead, he considers himself lucky when he finds something. The other person is weeping over the loss while he rejoices. What is he rejoicing over? The same thing may happen to you tomorrow; what then? All such thoughts come from that other one, that fellow with the goat’s feet.

He comes and confuses your nous, your spiritual intellect. He comes and puts things into your nous that should have no power at all over a Christian. A Christian must know this cunning enemy and avoid, as far as possible, his paths and suggestions. But, I repeat, we do not understand the matter correctly. That is why we fail to appreciate the great things taking place around us. The whole incarnate economy of salvation is directed against the devil. God came into the world because of the devil, and He remains present today in the Orthodox Church because of the devil. The Orthodox Church, the Mysteries, and the clergy have no other purpose than to destroy the works of Satan.

As I told you, why is Baptism necessary? It cleanses ancestral sin and, if the person is an adult, the sins to which he himself has consented. Who committed those sins? The person together with the devil—or rather, the devil together with the person. Why does Holy Confession exist? It exists to cleanse a person’s sins, which are committed through the cooperation of Satan and the person, not of God. And what purpose does Holy Unction serve? Satan brings illnesses, while Christ, in His Church, cleanses and heals illnesses through Holy Unction. What purpose does the blessing of water, the Agiasmos, serve? What is happening when you take the basil, go through your home, and sprinkle it? You drive out the devil, and Satan cannot enter there. I remember such a case involving a woman who had been a witch and repented.

She returned in dust and ashes. She brought a priest, who performed the blessing of water in her home and sprinkled it, and so forth. Later, when that gentleman came back, he said, “We cannot enter here now; another has entered.” Then he withdrew and went away. A voice was heard saying that they could not enter because another had now entered. Someone may ask, did Satan not know what had happened? Satan is not present everywhere, so he could not have known. Omnipresence belongs only to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Satan is confined to place and time. At the time when the blessing of water was performed, he was not present. He came afterward, found everything cleansed, shrank back, and left. A person should begin to act in this way as well, gradually setting himself upon the right path.

He must work against Satan, praying and beseeching Christ to grant him illumination so that he may discern Satan’s works. Have you never noticed this? At one moment everything is calm, peaceful, beautiful, and good. Then suddenly a situation arises in the home—a real tempest—with doors being slammed, fists striking the table, blasphemies, and savage outbursts. How did this happen? Something alien entered the situation. That powerful personage came in; the people were not watchful, they were swept away, and all these things happened to them. You may ask me, “What prompted you to say these things tonight?” It was the Church service I attended today, which you too may have attended—though perhaps some of you did not because of certain work; I do not know.

Perhaps it was because of indifference, or perhaps you arrived after the Gospel. It was the Church that prompted me. The Church told me all this today. I heard it and saw it: Christ came face to face with the demon-possessed man, and there I saw Satan’s power—what he can do and what he cannot do; Satan’s confession concerning Christ; the harm he caused; his malice toward certain others; how those people responded; the loss they suffered; and so many other things arising from today’s Gospel account proclaimed in the Church. It presents our Christ in the region of Gergesa. Gergesa and Gadara were two ancient neighboring cities. Let me mention, by the way, that they are on the eastern side of the Sea of Gennesaret.

They are directly opposite Capernaum. There were Greek cities in that region, in the very place spoken of by the Church today, and mosaics bearing Greek inscriptions can still be found there. Those cities were known as the Decapolis. We ought to humble ourselves enough to go there. We may travel many times to Europe, America, and elsewhere, yet most of us do not go to the Holy Land. Those places are ours—truly ours. These events took place there. There Christ met the demon-possessed man, and there the identity of this formidable personage was revealed, when our Christ asked him what his name was.

He answered, “Legion”—that is, six thousand.

Thousands of demons were inside one man. From this you can begin to understand the true state of affairs. Yet people say that demons do not exist. Some call Satan a moral evil; others call him a negative force. But if you search the Scriptures for the names given to this person, you will find him called the angel of the abyss; Apollyon, whose Hebrew name is Abaddon; the ruler of this world; the ruler of the world of sin; the murderer of man; and Beelzebul.

He is called Lucifer, the god of this age, Belial, the dragon, the great red dragon, Leviathan, the ancient serpent, an evil spirit, a liar, the father of lies, the tempter, and the evil one. See how many names Holy Scripture gives him. These different names reveal a rational and free person, but one who is deceitful, defiled, evil, and hostile to humanity. Then someone comes along and tells you, “He is nothing—just the one we do not name.” That is precisely what I am saying. This “one we do not name” brought God into the world.

He had Him crucified. So be watchful and take precautions, because only by following the way shown by Christ and the Church can you, as a human being, be delivered and saved. Christ confronted Satan many times. On some occasions He rebuked him and commanded him to be silent and not to confess who He was. In today’s account, He did not tell him to be silent; rather, He commanded him to depart. “Come out,” He said.

Today Satan made a confession. He said that Christ is God. He acknowledged that one day he will be punished—truths that human beings reject. Take many of us who call ourselves Christians. We may not yet have become Jehovah’s Witnesses or heretics, but ask someone, “Do you believe that there will one day be a judgment?” He will reply, “The bridal chamber is here, and Paradise is here.” Yet today Satan said, “Do not torment me before the appointed time by sending me into the Abyss.” Is Christ God? Ask someone, and he will tell you that Christ was merely a tall man, a social reformer, or some supposedly clever fellow.

But Satan says, “What have You to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?” Which of the two knows better? And if this were not true, why did Christ not correct him? Why did He not stop him? Why did He allow this description to stand, to be written down and taught, if it would lead people into error? How could that be? When Satan, by this negative testimony, teaches that there is life beyond the grave, punishment, and that Christ is God, who among us—who are merely human beings—can claim to know better than those who stood face to face? Sadly, these things pass unnoticed, though they should never pass unnoticed. Indeed, many people focus on this account only in order to accuse Christ.

Many people today—I do not know whether you have ever discussed this—accuse our Christ because He allowed the demons to enter the swine, causing the Gergesenes material loss. There were about two thousand demons, since two thousand swine were struck. At least one entered each animal, though there were probably more, because a legion means six or seven thousand. Originally it consisted of six thousand regular troops, and in some periods about 730 cavalrymen also made up the legion—I do not know whether you are aware of this. You may say the numbers were different in the days of our Christ. One legion numbered 6,200 soldiers.

And 730 cavalrymen. Each legion was composed of ten battalions; each battalion had three companies, and each company had two centuries. That was the legion in the days of our Lord. You understand, then, how many demons were enraged, and that our Christ allowed this because they had begged Him: “Do not send us into the Abyss; permit us to enter the swine.” And He said, “Go.” He did not command them, “Go and enter there.” Rather, He told them, “Come out; I command you to leave this place. Where you go now is your concern.” But because He left them free, they chose to enter the swine, and the swine rushed into the sea and drowned. Today Christ is accused of causing damage—material damage—

to the Gergesenes. And this, of course, became both an obstacle and an argument. On the one hand, how could they keep Him among them? The obstacle was: “We do not want Him, since He causes us material loss.” On the other hand, it became their argument: “Let us drive Him away, since He has harmed us materially.” This happens with many people. They do not want God because, they say, He gives you so many prohibitions—so many “do nots.” We often hear: “Are you going to live with the Cross in your hand? You will never accomplish anything. Forget all that; leave Christ and His Gospel aside, and look at how we are going to live today. With the Cross in your hand, you cannot do anything.” Matthew has recorded a beautiful saying of His: “He who does not gather with Me scatters.” You do not bring your affairs to Christ, because He might tell you to make less money, to earn less,

and not to enjoy so many fleshly and worldly pleasures, and so on. So you deceive yourself about Christ, turn away, and enjoy these things. Tomorrow you will pay for them; tomorrow you will vomit them up. Everything gathered like chaff in the wind will be scattered by the devil. None of it will endure. We think otherwise, but that is not reality. What He said—“he who does not gather,” whoever does not gather and receive together with Me—was truly spoken: he “scatters.” The poor swine were not at fault, were they? The demons swept them away, drove them into the sea, and they drowned.

If a person is not watchful and permits another to enter him, that other will cast him into the sea. He will take him into the Abyss; he will not take him to Paradise. Satan cannot stand in Paradise. Let us not be deceived. That is where he will take him—to the sea, into the Abyss. But for him to enter a person, that person must leave some opening, some empty space, some point of entry. He cannot enter if the person keeps watch. When we discussed the Parable of the Sower, we spoke about the ways Satan can enter the human soul. What are those ways? He enters the human soul when a person does not guard it. The soul is guarded through observance of God’s law. When God says, “You shall not commit adultery; you shall not engage in fornication; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness,” He has set a fence all around you and is guarding your immortal soul. But when you say, “It does not matter,”

“It is fashionable; fornication is natural; stealing is necessary,” and so on, you pull out those fence posts. You are doing nothing less than leaving your immortal soul unfenced and allowing the little devil to enter. We are the cause; we are the ones who fail to keep watch. How, then, should a person keep watch? Above all, through noetic prayer. A person cannot always be at the chanter’s stand, cannot always hold the prayer book in his hand, and cannot always remain at his place of prayer. He has work to do; he must labor for his bread, his rent, and his medicine; he must run about and help others. Yet God has given him the invincible weapon: noetic prayer, the prayer of the publican: “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.”

“Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me. Most Holy Theotokos, have mercy on me. My Saint, have mercy on me. Have mercy on my home; have mercy on my husband while he is at work, out in the marketplace. Have mercy on my wife wherever she is going, on my daughter who has left for school, and on my son as he goes on his way.” This is easy to do. A person can do it while walking, traveling, or working. You may be washing, cooking, or doing something else. Through this noetic prayer you can guard yourself and everyone around you, bringing them before God. But when a person disregards this, he takes no measures to guard his soul. A few days ago, while I was on the Holy Mountain, I read a short letter written by a young foreign monk.

He had come to the Holy Mountain and wrote to his parents in careful, elegant Greek: “My dear parents, keep the words ‘Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me’ in your prayer. In this way you will be able to cast out all the logismoi, the intrusive thoughts, and keep them under restraint.” He was a foreign boy who had probably spent only forty days on the Holy Mountain. Yet he had discerned that through this unceasing prayer Satan is driven back; he cannot advance and bring a person down. And so, when Satan casts logismoi at us—whether worldly thoughts about fashion, fleshly thoughts about various sins, self-serving thoughts, and so forth—

we should set this prayer against them, since we may have no opportunity to go to our place of prayer, kneel, and weep, but may be on the road, in the car, or wherever else. It is an easy prayer that a person can always carry within himself and within his nous, his spiritual intellect. It can restrain these thoughts or erase them altogether. Satan persists, but when a person also persists, Satan is compelled in his own way to depart. This is why Peter writes in the fifth chapter of his epistle: “Resist, and he will flee from you.” Do not raise your hands in surrender at the very first moment—do not give up. Avoid the causes of temptation. Bring this prayer into the struggle. Place the name of Christ in your head, upon your tongue, and within your heart, and Satan will be forced to flee. He will not persist.

Saint John Climacus says: “Flog your enemies with the name of Jesus.” With the name of Christ, scourge, strike, and beat the enemies—the demons. Satan cannot endure that name. He cannot endure the name of our Most Holy Theotokos or the name of our Christ. And even if you wish to say nothing else throughout your life, never uttering any other prayer, not even the prayers of the Church, hold fast to these two names: “Most Holy Theotokos, my Jesus Christ. Most Holy Theotokos, my Jesus Christ. Most Holy Theotokos, my Jesus Christ. Most Holy Theotokos, my Jesus Christ.” Satan will pass many miles away; he will not be able to trouble you. Even if you have nothing else—not “Have mercy on me, O God,” not the Creed, not the Lord’s Prayer, nothing—hold fast to these two words, these two names. Let them pass through your nous and descend into your heart.

Let your tongue use them, inwardly or aloud, wherever you may be. Satan cannot remain. But we make no effort in these matters, and that is precisely why we are in such a wretched state. The demoniac was naked and exposed among the tombs. Who had stripped him? Who had taken off his clothes and left him completely naked? The devil. What happened when he encountered Christ? He was found clothed and in his right mind, sitting at the feet of Christ. This is a great lesson for our own days, something of exceptional importance. Who has stripped people naked today? Who has turned the human person into a walking den of corruption, a walking butcher shop of flesh? Who did this—Christ or Satan?

Satan. Today we are living in an age of Sodom and Gomorrah. And it is not only women who are naked; sadly, men are naked as well. I take this opportunity to tell you that whatever part of the human body is left naked becomes territory for Satan. Do you leave four fingers’ breadth of your arm bare? You have installed the devil there. Do you leave eight bare? You have given him more territory. You shorten the sleeve, cut it even higher, and so on, until you have installed him completely. Today we go about naked. I see it among men as well: bare-legged and exposed in other ways. No, this is not right. Read what I have written. I wrote a short booklet entitled When a Woman Does Not Fear God, though another should also be written entitled

When a Man Does Not Fear God, because it is not only the woman who fails to fear God; the man also fails to fear God. There you will read that a woman in the Old Testament was careless and her heel became visible. Her heel was exposed, and someone was scandalized. That person will certainly be hanging like a pendant around her neck. Do you know how many people may be found hanging like pendants upon our souls on that Day? Since a person under Satan’s influence will naturally go naked. He has no sense of modesty and does not blush. Others around him blush, but he himself does not; and often he even has the audacity to tell them to close their eyes.

In that conversation, someone told a mother whose young daughter was beside her, almost completely naked, without even Adam’s covering: “Close your eyes if you are scandalized.” Of course, I must follow what has been said, for I too should have died to the flesh and should be able to look at you as I look at meat in a butcher shop without being scandalized. I am at fault and will answer for it; but woe also to you, who make yourself a wandering temptation. Sadly, all these things pass unnoticed. In any case, Christ clothed the demoniac. And I do not know whether you realize that all of you who have been clothed to this day have been clothed after Christ. Before Christ, you were not clothed. I am not speaking about those who still appear religious while remaining naked. They are not truly devout; they are mistaken.

They are called Christians. They may be good people, and they will even go to Hell, but they are not Christians. For all the good people—I do not know whether you realize this—are in Hell. All the good people. Do not imagine that they are evil. Both evil and good people are in Hell. Only Christians are not in Hell. The good person who also strives to become a Christian, to be made whole, and who fears becoming the cause of another person’s stumbling—he will one day be saved. For Christ said: “It is necessary that stumbling blocks come, but woe to the one through whom the stumbling block comes.”

It would be better for such a person to tie a millstone around his neck and cast himself into the sea today than to remain alive, go about freely, and think that everything is fine. There are many ways in which we can cause others to stumble, and we must ask God to watch over and help us. Nakedness is one of them. It is very sad to hear a man say to his wife, “Get dressed so we can go out.” And do you know what “get dressed” means today? It means, “Undress so we can go out.” That is what it means today. That is how it is understood. Our daughters, our children, and often we ourselves within our homes—we men go about the house very indecently, in a manner opposed to Christ and pleasing to Satan, even when there are girls and boys present. And the mother also goes about the house dressed in such a way—so naked and so opposed to Christ—that

the home becomes a true Hell, while we still seek ways to restrain immorality and destruction. Christ alone can do this. When a person enters properly into the Christian life, little by little his hair will grow longer, his sleeves and dress will grow longer, and he will wear his trousers properly. His short sleeves will become appropriate. Do not listen when the world says, “You will be too hot.” That is false. Look at me: I go about all summer wearing a tie and this clothing. I went to Jerusalem in heat of forty-eight degrees Celsius, wearing my shirt and jacket. It is hotter in Hell. Try it; I tell you this from personal experience. Besides, our Christ has provided suitable garments,

including lighter ones, and suitable colors, such as white for summer, which reflect the sun’s rays. Choose something dignified that covers the body but is made of lighter fabric. God has provided every convenience and given humanity every color with which to meet the difficulty. So long as the man was with the devil, he was naked. When he came to Christ, the first thing he considered right was to go and clothe himself, then sit quietly near Him. There is another beautiful point concerning these devices of Satan, and with this I will finish. Satan was now threatening him: “Just let Him leave, and then I will show you. Just let Him leave, and then I will show you.” He threatened him just as he threatened that poor woman who came up from behind and secretly received her healing—the woman with the issue of blood, if you remember. The healed man said to Christ, “Let me stay near You.”

Did Christ take him with Him? No. Not everyone is called to remain physically near Christ as an Apostle or something of that kind. No. Nor are people in danger simply because they are not physically close to Christ, for they can be noetically close to Him. Christ told him, “Go to your village, go to your own country, and tell all that God has done for you. Go and tell them what God has done for you, and do not be afraid; I am here.” When a person looks back over his own history, he learns many things. If we Orthodox were willing—not even out of faith, but merely from a sense of honor—to recount the miracles of Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Saints that we ourselves have experienced, without even mentioning those experienced by our households, close relatives, and acquaintances, no greater theology would be needed, because through miracles

the true faith and the existence of God’s power are demonstrated. “Go and do this,” Christ tells him. You do not have to be a theologian to become a person of God. This is not only for theologians. Tell what you have seen. Do not be perverse, distorting these things and interpreting them in a merely scientific or demonic way, chilling a person’s faith. Do not take something for which we ought to say, “Glory to God,” shift it toward the demons, and say, “Science has explained that.” Christ tells him, “Go and tell it,” and we too must speak. Could I refuse to confess and tell you who I once was and what Christ made of me? If you could learn about my life and my return to Christ, you would never be able to sleep. And every one of us has his own Damascus.

God got hold of him—somewhere, somehow, God got hold of him. No one comes up here, nor does anyone go to Church, simply because he wants to. God has worn out many pairs of shoes watching over each one of us. He reached one person through penthos, through mourning; another through an earthquake; another through cancer; another through war—and each person in some different way. No one comes to Christ with roses in his hand. There is always some circumstance that Christ has made use of to take hold of that person. Each of us has his own Damascus. Just as Paul was taken hold of there, outside Damascus, so each person has a Damascus of his own, and he must tell others about it. Paul went before King Agrippa and said to him, ‘O King, this and this happened to me. How could I possibly not believe, or not continue believing, or not speak about it?’ It was impossible. And yet we are ashamed even to raise our hand and make the sign of the Cross. We are ashamed to refuse non-fasting food

for fear of offending someone. Whom will you offend—the unbeliever or the indifferent person? You will simply remind him: ‘My dear friend, today is a fast day, so I will not take this. Thank you; just give me a glass of water. I will not take it.’ In other words, we do not confess Christ openly. A girl should say, ‘Madam, sir, I will not wear that. I will not wear men’s clothing. God made me a woman; He did not make me a man. I cannot make myself something repulsive, an abomination,’ as Scripture tells me, written two thousand years before Christ. The matter of women wearing men’s clothing and men wearing women’s clothing was something God addressed long before anyone would have expected it. Read Deuteronomy, chapter five, verse twenty, and see what it says: ‘Any woman who puts on men’s clothing, and any man who puts on women’s clothing, is an abomination before God.’ An abomination! So how can I do such a thing now? Even if this comes from long ago, God is not concerned with fashions. If we were to accept that women wore men’s clothing and men wore women’s clothing,

then a woman is still a woman, and a man could not properly wear women’s things; he would wear what belonged to him. And yet man insists on doing things his own way. Why does all this happen? Because man is under the influence of Satan, whom he does not take seriously or reckon with as much as he ought. I do not know whether what I have said has fallen on deaf ears. But I take this opportunity to insist on this point: this influence exists. Sadly, it does exist. Let us not accuse God; let us not accuse our neighbor; let us not accuse anyone else. Let us blame ourselves for failing, with Christ’s help, to take the proper measures against him. This is why God leaves us here: so that we may cleanse ourselves from our sins and frustrate Satan’s plans. What frustrates Satan’s plans above all is confession. When you go to confession,

you ruin the plans he has laid. When you confess your logismoi, your intrusive thoughts, you ruin the plans he has laid, and he has to begin all over again. This is the warfare we must wage: let him lay his plans, and let us destroy them, and we shall see where it all leads. Where will it lead? It will lead to Paradise. This is what I pray for the whole world and for us as well. Amen.

Αυτό που παθαίνει ο Σατανάς στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία, πουθενά αλλού δεν το παθαίνει. Διότι μόνον η Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία έχει την εντολή αυτή που πήρε από τον Χριστό το βράδυ της Αναστάσεως, του δεσμείν και λύειν, τι θα εργάζεται. Εμείς, επαναλαμβάνω, δεν έχουμε ορθή γνώμη στο θέμα αυτό. Γι’ αυτό και ακριβώς είμεθα και ψυχροί έναντι της Εκκλησίας μας. Είμεθα, μπορεί να πει κανείς, αδιάφοροι οι περισσότεροι και κλείνουμε τα περιστατικά εν τόπω και χρόνω. Ακούμε πολλές φορές ανθρώπους να ερωτούν: «Χτύπησε τρίτη καμπάνα;» Γιατί, δεν σε αφορούν τα γεγονότα της πρώτης καμπάνας και της δευτέρας;

Ποια είναι εκείνα, για ποιον ομιλούν, ποιος ωφελείται εξ αυτών; Στο κενό πέφτουνε; Δεν σε ωφελούν τα γεγονότα του Εσπερινού, του Όρθρου; Δεν σε απασχολούν αυτά τα πράγματα; Ο Εξάψαλμος δεν θα αρέσει εσένα να τον ακούσεις; Δεν έχεις καμιά σχέση με αυτά;

Να χρησιμοποιούνται από τη γλώσσα σας, είτε μέσα, οπουδήποτε. Δεν μπορεί να σταθεί ο σατανάς. Αλλά εμείς δεν κάνουμε κανέναν αγώνα επάνω στα θέματα αυτά, γι' αυτό και ακριβώς έχουμε τα χάλια που έχουμε. Ο άνθρωπος γυμνός αυτός και τετραχηλισμένος μέσα στα μνήματα. Ποιος τον είχε γδύσει; Ποιος του είχε βγάλει αυτά και τον είχε τσίτσιδο; Ο διάβολος. Όταν ήρθε σε επαφή με τον Χριστό, τι έγινε; Ευρέθη ενδεδυμένος και σωφρονών, στα πόδια του Χριστού. Μάθημα μεγάλο για τις ημέρες μας, κάτι εξοχής. Ποιος έγδυσε τον άνθρωπο σήμερα; Ποιος τον έκανε κινητό διαφθορείο τον άνθρωπο, κινητό κρεοπωλείο τον άνθρωπο; Ποιος τον έκανε, ο Χριστός ή ο σατανάς;
