Summary
The lecture begins by addressing the fear, disappointment, and triumphalism among Greek Christians following an unfamiliar election result. Following Saint Paul’s instruction, believers must pray for all people and rulers, including unbelieving or hostile authorities, so that society may enjoy a peaceful and godly life. Stories concerning Mount Athos, Sinai, Constantinople, and holy ascetics reinforce the conclusion that a small number of faithful people can protect a nation through repentance, fasting, vigilance, and prayer.

It has been fifteen days since we last saw one another.
In the meantime, events have taken place in our homeland, as you know—specifically, the elections.
Before the elections, after the elections, and right up to this evening, many people—some out of friendship, some out of curiosity, and others for various reasons and motives—have tried in one way or another to draw out
my opinion concerning the results of these elections.
Those of you who have been with us for many years will know that I always avoid speaking about political matters, because I am convinced that these matters depend more upon God and the spiritual condition of man than upon other factors.
Yet how can I avoid the subject altogether? Some Christians, among others, are unconcerned because their party won the majority. They rejoice and enjoy what follows from a victory.
Others—a large proportion of Christians—have seen all their ambitions and efforts buried. They are gripped by fear and uncertainty, and most of them, as we say, are completely at a loss.
It is true that a system of this kind has won a majority in our homeland for the first time, and so it is natural that we should feel ourselves facing the unknown. We do not know exactly what will come of it. Will it be good? Will it be bad? Who can say? Yet if you ask these people and speak with them, you will see that they all aspire to and desire the good of the homeland—the good of Greece.
Will they succeed, through their system, their aims, and their policies in general, in accomplishing what they hope to accomplish? I do not want to believe that they are setting out from an evil foundation, with the deliberate intention from the beginning of destroying everything. I never want to believe such a thing. Whether they are mistaken in thinking that they possess the necessary strength, or that this was the system that ought to prevail and make the Greek people happy, and so forth—whether they themselves have been deceived—that is another matter. Most Christians, however, including those who cast their votes for Christian parties, behave as though they were at a funeral. They do not know what is happening or how they should conduct themselves, and to some degree they are falling into sin.
Many take sides in discussions, speaking, accusing others, and seeking to lay the blame on particular people. Today I spoke with someone from the Holy Mountain and said to him, “Please tell the fathers to pray.” “Why?” he asked. I replied, “We have just had elections, and we are facing a new system.” “It was a dictatorship,” he said. “No,” I answered. “Did the people not vote?” “They did not vote. You will see what follows,” he told me, and that was the end of the matter. I held my tongue and added nothing.
The people voted. This was the party they wanted, and they knew its program beforehand. Then I said to him, “In any event, offer a prayer. For even if we accept that some branches are dry and will be burned, there are also some that are still half-green among them and ought not to be burned.” “Very well,” he said. “If you put it that way, you are right.” But I remained focused on his first response. The people were called to vote, and since the majority wanted these things, who are you to go into mourning now and fly your flag at half-mast? In any case, the matter now moves forward. How should we think, and how should we conduct ourselves in relation to it, whichever side we may belong to—
whether among those who failed or those who succeeded? Those who succeeded also bear a measure of responsibility in the face of this situation, just as those who failed do, because they live in the same society and are affected by events, by public conduct, by the laws that will be enacted, and by everything else that happens. They too have an obligation. But the Christian has an even greater obligation, because the Christian always knows more than all the wisdom of the world knows. The Christian also knows and speaks with Someone whom worldly wisdom disregards: that other factor called God, called Christ, called faith, called the Gospel, and so forth.
The well-intentioned person—and I never question his good intentions—relies upon his wisdom, his knowledge, and his science. But the matter does not end there. That is why this evening, prompted by the attitude that has prevailed among Christians for the most part since the elections, I wanted to say a few words on this subject. Perhaps we may place ourselves where we ought to stand and, more broadly, be able to benefit our homeland. The Church exists within our homeland too, because some people misunderstand this. There can be no homeland without the Church, and the Church is not merely walls; the Church is our homeland. Do not listen to those who demand separation—who want the Church removed from the state
and the state removed from the Church.
That is a grave error. We should pray that neither one is separated from the other, because such a separation would bring complete destruction. We should pray that neither one departs. The one cannot live, and the other cannot stand. Both must coexist; there is no other way. Yet this will depend neither upon God nor upon those who do not believe, but upon the Christians. Christians are the ones who can influence the situation. So do not panic. A Christian is like a mighty bomb. I read that they have invented a rocket with ten warheads, 210 meters long, 24 meters wide,
and weighing ninety tons. You understand what that means. Yet it is laughable beside one Christian who kneels and says the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, do not abandon us.” That rocket is nothing—kindling, an empty shell, a soap bubble; words fail me. That is what it is beside a Christian who kneels inside his humble hut, raises his hands, and says to Christ with tear-filled eyes, “My Christ, do not abandon us.” It is nothing at all. Enough of empty talk, then. Things are not as people imagine. We would not be in this condition if we were willing to understand. We must see that we depend upon Christ and upon Heaven, not upon the earth. Many theories are circulating.
Do we say, “We must make the first move so that He will move us”? No. Unless He moves us, we do not move. However much we may struggle, if He does not approve, for reasons known to Him, nothing will happen. And when He does approve, for reasons known to Him, everyone else is swept aside. We must understand this. If we were willing to examine the events of our homeland both as members of the Church and—let me add the word so that we may all agree—as patriots, seeing how our nation passed through fire and sword in far worse times,
we would see that we suffered harm only when we departed from Christ. Whenever we returned to Christ, He miraculously sheltered and upheld us. We are the new Israel, and we have not stained our hands with the blood of Christ. On the eve of His Passion, when He saw the Greeks, Christ said—as you know better than I do—“The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” If we were willing to consider that we are the new Israel and to read the history of ancient Israel, we would see when ancient Israel fell into the hands of its enemies, when it was crushed, humiliated, and brought to ruin, and how it rose again. It did not rise through weapons or military strength. Read, in particular, the account of Gideon. At that time everything had taken a disastrous turn, and God sent an angel to Gideon
—a man who was threshing grain—and told him to prepare an army and go to war. Who was Gideon? An unknown man, neither a general nor anything of the sort. Nevertheless, he called the people to arms and gathered thirty thousand men. “They are too many,” God told him, although the enemy numbered in the millions, swarming like ants. “Thirty thousand are too many. Tell them to run down to the water. Set apart those who lap the water as dogs do, and let those who kneel down to drink depart.” Three hundred men remained. The rest were soft and pampered. “Where can I go with three hundred men?” Gideon asked. “Do as I tell you.” And with those three hundred men, each carrying a clay jar instead of a cannon and a torch in his hand,
they captured the camp without a battle. Their enemies thought they were being attacked, panicked, and turned upon one another. God filled them with fear, and they fought among themselves. Gideon’s men merely broke their jars, advanced, and took the camp. Have you ever read of such things? Have you read in the accounts of Israel’s campaigns how fire came down from heaven and God fought against their enemies? You have read it. It is the same Christ. He is the Commander; it is He. God has not changed; He is the same. People change, but Christ does not change. And if people refuse to change, Christ is not to blame. That young monk said to me, “You yourselves brought this about. So it is not a dictatorship.” Consequently, it is now for us to see that this matter is resolved.
Because of our sins, we as a people have suffered everything we have suffered through all these years, and whatever we suffer from now on will again be because of our sins. But if we are willing to change and amend our lives, then whoever may be in power—even the fiercest lion, even the greatest servant of Satan, even the Antichrist himself—why should you be afraid? Do not listen to people who say, “We must find Christians to govern us.” Where will you find them? Are even we ourselves truly Christians? Measure people by Christ’s standard, not by my own. I expose the other man as a Freemason, for example, while I declare that my own candidate is perfectly sound. I may judge my man to be sound, but when weighed on God’s scales, might he also be found wanting?
Newspapers—even an issue of the Orthodox Press—present Andreas Papandreou as a Freemason, with photographs and all sorts of strange things. So where is a person to turn now? What can he rely on or hold fast to? But that is not where the heart of the matter lies. The heart of the matter is in 1 Timothy 2:1. Paul settled the matter in his own day. “Do you want peace? Do you want to live well? Do you? Then leave these things aside. They cannot harm you. Take care to remain with God, and pray that God will tame all these beasts, so that you may lead a quiet and peaceable life.” The faithful, these so-called Christians, place their confidence not in God but in men. They do not want God to order things; they want man to do it. And so we see what happens: we pass from one disappointment to another. God is not to blame. Listen to what Paul says: “I exhort, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority.” Why? “That we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.”
“Paul, did you ask God about what you are writing? Did you ask Him, and what did He tell you?” “This is good and acceptable before God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” Who, then, can amend this passage, invent some other way of his own, and make it conform to his weaknesses and opinions? Paul says that first we must pray for all people. He does not say first for kings, as though deliberately placing them before everyone else, but for all people—for everyone in general—and then for kings. “For which kings, Paul? They are all godless!” Some of our rulers today may be so, but in Paul’s day they were not even baptized. And he says a great deal
about this subject and makes the distinction. I found the passage, and I will read it to you: “For kings, even if the kings are unbelievers.” He says that we must pray for kings even when they are unbelievers. We must still offer prayer for them, because when the Apostle wrote these words, the kings were unbelievers. There were no believing kings. So when Paul tells you to pray for those unbelievers, it is because God will press them into His service; God will enlist them, and they will serve and protect you. Is that what we do? No, it is not. Let me give you an example. You know that we remained under Turkish rule for four hundred years. We all know that, do we not? And do you know that the Holy Mountain...
did not suffer a single injury during those four hundred years? Do you know that chrysobulls and lead-sealed decrees were issued for the protection of the Holy Mountain? What does that mean? The Most Holy Theotokos guarded the Holy Mountain even through the Turks, and did it suffer any harm? Yet now that our own people have come and we have been liberated, the Holy Mountain is in danger. Indeed, you will soon hear many things said against both the Church and monasticism. It is endangered by Christians, though it was not endangered by the Turks. Do you know that Mount Sinai, that other beacon of Orthodoxy, has never suffered so much as a scratch from anyone?
Neither the Persians nor Khosrow nor anyone else harmed it. Do you know that there is an entire chrysobull sealed with the imprint of Muhammad’s palm, saying, “Do not harm this monastery”? Do you know that there is another decree, fully signed by Napoleon the Great, saying, “Do not harm this monastery”? It has remained unaltered for fifteen hundred—indeed, sixteen hundred—years. What does this tell us? That everything depends on our sins; it does not depend on human power, schemes, or wisdom. If, then, we prayed for these people, things would be very different, because when a person prays for them
—for the atheists, the Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Marxists, the Freemasons, the ideologues, and so forth—he accomplishes two things. First, he does not fall into self-righteousness; and second, he benefits the person who is in error.
He benefits the person who is in error. Does anyone understand this? “The others know what they are doing,” we say. If we could put such a man before a firing squad and blow him into a million pieces because he is a Freemason or whatever else, we would do it—a million pieces! But have you asked Christ, who was crucified for that man, whether He is pleased with what you are thinking? Have you asked whether Christ agrees with you? You have no spiritual sensitivity, none at all. Have you ever read what holy people teach about how we should regard these beasts—these human beings?
We must consider whether we have ever read any of this. Allow me to read you what Saint Theodore the Studite says about such situations and how we ought to conduct ourselves: “For this reason the blessed Apostle wept for the enemies of Christ, praying with unceasing anguish of heart.” Do you know that Paul prayed for the enemies of Christ, for the Jews, whom we would impale if we could? He prayed that they too might not be lost. “For this reason Jeremiah the Prophet lamented over Israel and left behind in writing his many Lamentations.”
Have you read the Lamentations of Jeremiah? For whom was Jeremiah mourning? He mourned for the people of Israel, that disobedient and faithless nation which had been taken into captivity for seventy years because of its sins. And for this reason Moses also cried out to God and said, “If You are willing to forgive this sin, forgive them; but if not, blot me also out of Your book.”
Do you understand that? He pleads with God: “Either You will forgive them too, or else blot me out as well; I too will die with them.” These are strange things. Which of us knelt down to pray for this whole situation before it happened, or even after it happened? No one. We merely traded clever opinions among ourselves, imagining that we would overcome all these obstacles. They cannot be overcome that way. They have been arranged with such cunning. God knew this, and Paul knew it beforehand and wrote to prepare us for what we must do in the difficult circumstances in which we now find ourselves. Saint Theodore continues: “Indeed, each of the Saints, possessing the same compassion, prayed earnestly for others.”
He says that the Saints, the Christians, had this same compassion for all those lost people, for evil people who treated others badly, and they offered supplications on their behalf. “Therefore, let us also strive, as far as we are able, on their behalf. Let us not look only to our own interests, but let us also pray for the world.” Not only for my poor little self, he says, but also for the world that lives in error, “showing mercy and compassion toward those who live in perversity.” For they live a perverted life. “As for kings—even if the kings are unbelievers—we must nevertheless pray for them; for those strengthened in heresies, and those held fast in error;
for those darkened among the nations; in short, for all people, according to the command given us by the Apostle, we must offer supplications and prayers”—the very passage I read to you. This is what Saint Theodore the Studite says. Saint Isaac the Syrian, another Father of nepsis, or watchfulness, says things that seem stranger still. Listen: “A heart burning”—the heart must burn and ache, that is—“for the whole creation: for human beings, for birds, for animals, and for demons.” Strange things indeed: your heart is to burn with sorrow because even the demons will be lost.
For the spirits and for every created thing, and therefore also for irrational creatures;
for the enemies of the truth—and this is where we find ourselves today—and for those who harm us, we must at every hour offer prayer with tears, that they may be preserved and that mercy may be shown to them. Who thinks this way? Who does this? Or, if someone has not done it until today, is he prepared to do it from now on? These are things we must finally come to understand.
Because—because the outcome does not depend on God alone; it depends on man, since God acts according to man’s disposition. Do you remember? He issued a decree that Nineveh would be destroyed, signed and sealed it, and gave it to Jonah to proclaim: “Three days, and Nineveh shall be destroyed.” But the people repent; the people change their minds. They humble themselves in contrition. The animals fast, the adults fast, the children fast, abstaining from both food and water. The people change, and God changes His decree. He does not destroy Nineveh. God tears up His own signature. Did He tear it up by Himself? Their metanoia—their repentance—tore it up. If, then, we want things to change today and to turn in our favor, no matter who comes onto the political stage, we ourselves must change. Then God has His ways; God finds a way to direct and govern events so that they may serve His purpose.
If we do not change, things will grow worse day by day, and we shall become so tightly bound that one day it will be too late, because the time has come for us to be chastened. We do not repent. He overturned our beds. In a fraction of a second He turned us from princes into destitute wanderers. Yet no one repented. He did not permit us to be killed; it was corrective discipline. There have been a thousand other warnings as well. And now we shall be chastened because we do not repent. If we repent, things will be different. Yet as I speak along these lines, I sense that doubts remain even among us who are hearing these things firsthand at this very moment,
and among others who will hear them later through these recordings. Let me tell you something to encourage you. I draw it from Tradition. It is found in the narratives of Theodoret, an ancient interpreter. In his time there was a ruler in Constantinople who was exceedingly harmful both to the state and to the Church. The Christians became so frightened that they were utterly at a loss. They ran about seeking some ascetic, some elder, some man of God, hoping to receive some word that would console them.
He had fastened himself so firmly to power that no one could remove him. It was like what we used to say in the days of Papadopoulos: no one was capable of removing him. Yet a vigil on the Holy Mountain removed him in a single night. When the threat arose that they would be rounded up, placed on record, and that the crosses would again be gathered together and taken away, a vigil was held on the Holy Mountain. The next day Papadopoulos fell. No one expected his fall, and no one imagined that he could fall so easily. You know that an underground passage had been built years earlier from the palace to Phaleron, and they had now prepared it so they could escape through it. But things change when God is importuned
by people of pure heart and their hands are raised in prayer. Then things change. No one can lay claim to us—not even Satan, who comes to demand us—because Christ shows him those uplifted hands and says, “For their sake and because of their hands raised in prayer, I will not surrender you.” Remember also what He said to Abraham, who went down as far as five. But there were not even five; there was only Lot. Otherwise Sodom and Gomorrah would not have been destroyed. That is the heart of the matter. In those days, then, the Christians reached such a depth of despair, just as we today are living in gloom. Four or five of the more zealous among them decided to leave the city and go to a place where an ascetic lived. They wanted to tell him what was happening in the world and ask for his counsel.
They wanted to know what they should do, how they should conduct themselves, and how they could be delivered from this oppressive passion that had taken hold. They arrived, and the ascetic saw them. “Come over here,” he said. “Father, this and that has happened to us. We have a ruler who has destroyed everything—religion, the state, the family, and so on.” “And what do you want from me?” “Tell us what to do.” “I do not know. I left the world and came here to struggle against my sins. This is a matter for the Lord; I do not know what answer to give you.” “But are we to leave empty-handed? People are waiting for us down below. We must go back and comfort them, so they can remain steadfast. What should we do?” He took pity on them and asked them to give him fifteen days. “Come back in fifteen days,” he told them.
“If I have any news, I will tell you. Right now, I have nothing to tell you.” The man truly took the matter seriously. He added vigil to vigil, fasting to fasting, and prayer to prayer. Fifteen days passed, but there was neither voice nor response—nothing. His cell stood high above the plain and could be seen from below. On the fifteenth day, he saw them coming. He himself was now anxious, because he had received no word to give them. To reach his cell, they had to climb a small slope. The cell stood on a kind of plateau, two or three hundred metres up the hillside. The men reached that point, and then he lost sight of them.
He waited for them to appear. They came up before him, and he welcomed them. You can imagine how they hung on his every word. What would he say? “Sit down,” he said. “I now have very fresh news to tell you. At the very moment you were climbing the hill, an angel of the Lord came and told me this: ‘Tell those who are coming that I had no one worse to give them.’” In other words, given the kind of life those people were living, they did not deserve even this ruler; they deserved someone worse. “Go with my blessing.” And he dismissed them. What I am telling you may seem strange.
Allow me a digression within this digression. Do you know that after the City fell to Mehmed, the image of a hand with five fingers appeared before him every day? He was terrified. Wherever he went, it was before him: when he ate, when he drank, when he walked, when he wrote, even when he went to the privy. He summoned all the learned men to explain what it meant, but they could not interpret it. Then a Christian told him, “Send for such-and-such an ascetic, and he will tell you what this means.” So they summoned an Orthodox monk, and the monk told him, “Do not be afraid. This sign concerns us, not you.” “What do you mean, it concerns you?” he asked. “It is reminding you that if there had been five true Christians in the City, you would never have taken it. The sign is for us, not you. If there had been five, the City would not have been given into your hands.”
Not even five were found. In any case, the men returned, while the others were waiting below. When those below heard the message, there was universal mourning. You see, the problem is not only with unbelievers, the indifferent, materialists, and the rest. It is also with so-called Christians who are not Christians at all. Someone calls himself a Christian, yet refuses to have children, kills them, and throws them into the rubbish bin. A Christian, yet he does not fast. A Christian, yet he steals. A Christian woman, yet she dresses in men’s trousers. A Christian man, yet he is obsessed with women’s flesh and flies into a rage. “Christian” this and “Christian” that—and where are the Christians today? Christians only on paper.
Christians in one matter, Christians in another. I do not know whether a certain lady is with us tonight. She goes to Holy Confession and takes care to confess even the smallest detail, yet she finds no peace. I hear her confession again; she confesses again, but nothing changes. Again I hear her confession—still nothing. She cannot rest; she has no inner peace. Something is troubling her; something is wrong. The priest kept trying to comfort her, but nothing helped. The last time she went, he bent down to read the prayer over her and noticed that the hair at the roots was white while the rest was black. “My child,” he said, “do you dye your hair?” “Yes, Father.” “My child, you have had me wondering what the trouble was. Stop doing that.” And there it was. She became calm, found peace, and was set right.
We imagine that we can do whatever we please and still remain Christians. Where can the Lord find a place to stand? Do you know what our Christ said about Cyprus? There is an account in the collection called Antivohitheia in which He says, “I cannot set even one foot there; they are all illegitimate.” Do you understand what it means for Christ to say such a thing? During the war, at the convent of Saint Melania in Jerusalem, a nun from Cyprus was praying for her homeland. Christ appeared and said, “Stop praying for your homeland. I cannot set even one foot there, for they are all illegitimate.” You probably find all this incomprehensible. But Cyprus—and we so-called Christians as well—have bound the hands of Christ. He can find nowhere to stand, nowhere to set His foot.
It is like the dove Noah released. Finding nowhere to rest her feet, she returned to the ark. That is how matters stand. So we too must change our lives. When the Christians heard the ascetic’s message, they began to change and reform their lives. They did not merely make the sign of the Cross; they changed their lives. Fasting returned, self-restraint returned, and they began welcoming children into their families. They changed their lives. Metanoia—repentance—is inseparable from one’s way of life. What did John, the herald of repentance, say? “Brood of vipers, who warned you?” Do you think that merely saying a few words here will make everything right? “Bear fruits worthy of repentance.” No one is going to save you otherwise. Shall we keep saying “repentance” without going any further? It means a change of life—nothing less. There is no other way: a change of life. So they began to change, and they spread the message among themselves.
They were alarmed and said, “Yes, you see, we call ourselves Christians, yet we do this and that. We attend Church, we have been to Holy Confession, and yet we do not receive Holy Communion”—all these things. Change, then; change. But even if you change, who will remove that Beast from the position he has seized? That is the question. There was no one capable of removing him. But you change, and then see how God removes him. What happened, then? God saw that repentance had come about through this message and that the ruler now had to be taken out of the way. So God put a fear into him that someone was going to assassinate him. This Beast who had oppressed everyone lost his sleep and began devising plans to escape. And what did he do? He built a tunnel running from the palace to the Black Sea, beneath the water.
His plan was to escape through the tunnel if he were attacked. A boat waited offshore day and night so that he could get away. The tunnel was built according to his instructions, and he went down to inspect it. He walked all the way through and reached the water below, at the Golden Horn. He was pleased with the work, believing that it offered him some protection against assassination. Then a young monk appeared and said to him without any preamble, “What you have built will not save you. Only if you repent—only then—will you be saved.” The ruler sprang up in fury. “Who are you, and why are you saying these things?” and so forth. The young monk simply left. But those words lodged themselves within him.
Doubt began tormenting him again, and he could find no peace. Then another thought came to him: “If they attack me from the land, I shall flee toward the sea. But if they attack me from the sea, where shall I go? I must build another escape route.” So he built another passage leading toward Alexandroupolis. When that was finished, he inspected the new work and was pleased with it. And there was the young monk again. “This will not save you either. Only if you repent will you be saved.” The ruler began cursing and abusing him, and so on. In any case, this was the outcome: his chamberlain concealed a man beneath his bed, and one night that man pinned him to the bed with his blade. Thus the people, the Church, and the state were delivered
from this person. Who could have devised such a thing? Who could have imagined it? No one—God alone. We are the ones who must change. Those others do not understand; they are still intoxicated. They are unbelievers. They have not heard or learned from their fathers, their mothers, their schools, their priests, and so on. But what are we, who claim to be Christians, doing at this very moment? Do we believe that Christ has the power to transform everything, even through people who oppose the faith and everything it stands for? Do we believe this? Let me remind you of something, because I do not wish to speak from my own ideas.
Thank you.
Read chapters 23 and 24 of Numbers. When the people of Israel—three million souls—had come out through the sea by night and were journeying toward the Promised Land,
the Amalekites and the other peoples there, under King Balak, saw them as a curse, a threat of destruction, and an evil, and they were terrified. King Balak summoned a diviner named Balaam to curse this people. Yet although Balaam had been paid—for that was his occupation, to pronounce curses—he did not curse them; he blessed them. “I brought you here to curse them,” Balak said, “and you are blessing them?” “I cannot do otherwise,” Balaam replied. “This is what God tells me to do.” Balak took him from there and placed him somewhere else, from which he could see the Israelites and curse them. But again, Balaam blessed them and uttered a prophecy in their favour. “If you will not curse them,” Balak said, “then at least do not bless them.” “I cannot,” Balaam replied.
A third time he tried, yet Balaam never cursed them. Three times he blessed them, and there he also foretold what was to come: that a star would rise out of Jacob. He uttered other prophecies as well. This is God, and He has not changed in any way. He can change people’s minds and turn them around. Christ holds a little screwdriver in His hand and turns minds around. What did He do to Nebuchadnezzar? When Nebuchadnezzar made the great golden image so that the people would worship him as a god, God took him and sent him out into the fields, where he lived for seven years like the donkeys and mules. He was naked, his hair grew long, as did his nails, and he endured rain and scorching heat. Then, after seven years,
he began to come to his senses and said, “Did I make all these things?” He looked at the sun, the mountains, and the sea. “Did I make these? Did I? Someone else must have made them—someone greater than I am.” His mind began to return to its proper place. He regained his reason and became king again. If we knew a man who had lived like an animal for seven years, would we make him our king? Yet God restored him, presented him again to those who knew him, and afterward they accepted him as king. Read the Book of Daniel and you will find these things there. This is the God with whom we have to do. So do not be afraid of others. Our fear should concern our own spiritual state.
No matter whom He permits to rule—do you understand?—no matter what sort of Beast it may be, God remains God! Have you read the accounts of Saint Gerasimos of the Jordan? A lion served him. These are wondrous things! The lion would take the donkey from the skete, lead it out to graze and drink, and then bring it back again.
How did the lion, the hyena, the crocodile, the elephants, and all those wild beasts behave toward Adam before he sinned? They came and licked his feet; they kissed his feet. What happened when he sinned? They bared their teeth at him. How did the nature of the animals change? It changed because Adam’s relationship with God had changed. If he had not changed, all the animals would have served him. Therefore, however beastly those around us may be, if we have a living relationship with Christ, things can be transformed. Have you read how a lion dug the grave of Saint Mary of Egypt when Elder Zosimas was unable to do so?
He told the lion to bury the Saint, and it dug the grave. So the issue is not whether a lion is in the service of a human being, provided the human being himself is not a lion. Let the beast be a lion; the human being must not become one. They cast Daniel into the lions’ den. Why did the lions not devour him? Why did they lick him and show him affection? The question, then, is not whether there are lions around us or above us, but whether our own spiritual condition gives them cause to devour us. Jonah was cast into the sea, and the great fish swallowed him and kept him within for three days. That creature, whose stomach can break down stones, delivered him up whole. Why? Because it was serving the will of God.
Jonah was resisting God, and the waves of all the oceans rose up. But when Jonah raised his hands and said, “Yes, I am the one who did it,” the great fish received him and saved him. God has many such great fish with which to save us, provided that we change our way of life. They cast the three youths into the furnace, and not only were they not burned, but those who had heated the furnace were themselves consumed.
The flames leapt so high that they burned those standing outside, while the three who were inside did not even smell of smoke the next morning. Who was it that turned the furnace into dew? It was God. God sent ravens to feed Elijah. What does it matter to me that they were ravens? The question is whether I am an Elijah.
Am I faithful before God? That is the question. But there is something more. I was speaking with a brother who said to me, “I, for my part—though that is beside the point—could never accept anything from a Freemason.” I said to him, “Why? Is he a Jew? Is Freemasonry Judaism? I know that it is rooted in Judaism. But do you know,” I said, “that Basil the Great had a Jewish physician?”
“Did you know that?” I asked him. “I have read it,” he replied. “Then why do you not remember it? Why do you forget it?” I said to him. “I am a nationalist,” he told me, “and I do not want communism.” He kept pressing the point. “Yes,” I answered, “but you accepted the Truman Doctrine, which came from a thirty-third-degree Freemason. Otherwise you would be Bulgarian now—not only you, but all the Greeks. Yes or no?” “You are driving me mad,” he said. “I am not driving you mad. You are not looking carefully enough to understand things properly, and you demand Saints. I wish they were Saints—truly, I do. But there are no Saints, so what are we to do? We have all become so satanic; what can be done now? Are we simply to suffer the consequences? Are we to give up? What are we to do? Then go only to a Christian physician—yet when you fall ill, you get up, travel abroad, and let a Buddhist doctor treat you.”
What then? Are you going to reject everyone around you? Suppose something happens and you board an airplane, and they tell you that the pilot is Jewish—what will your answer be? We have fellow citizens here who are atheists, communists, and Freemasons. So what are we to do? Shut everything down and wipe it out? If you search for perfect people, you will find none. So let those devils be what they are. Make the sign of the Cross, change your life, untie Christ’s hands, and you will see what He does; you will see what He brings about. Does God lack power? “Have you ever read,” I asked him, “about the destruction of Arius? Were the three hundred and eighteen Fathers able to destroy him? It was the simple prayer of that bishop that destroyed him, when the bishop said the evening before, ‘My Christ,’
‘do not count me worthy to serve the Divine Liturgy at the same altar as Your enemy.’ That is what the elder said. The next morning Arius went to the Church to serve, but before he entered, he was seized by a violent attack of diarrhea and naturally went to the Church latrine. The others waited for him to come. “Why is he late?” “He has arrived,” someone who had recognized him said, “but he has gone to the privy.” They went there and found that his bowels had emptied into the basin. What would it cost God to gather them all up? A fraction of a second. But who will untie Christ’s hands, when Christ’s hands are bound by our sins—by bloodshed, lies, malice, fashion, carnality, fornication, adultery, and blasphemy? Who will do it? Yesterday I heard a recording of a demon-possessed woman, and she said:
“You blaspheme your Christ and your Most Holy Theotokos. You do not blaspheme me. You send people to me instead. You say, ‘Go to the devil.’ Thank you very much.” How, then, can we ask anything of God? At every opportunity, we go astray. I am not seeking praise for what I am saying, nor do I hold anything against anyone. But as a Christian, I too want to untie the hands of my Christ, if I have helped to bind them. And this is not merely the solution to the problems we are about to face. As individuals and as families, we all need to return to Christ, so that He may take the matter into His hands, however badly we have entangled it. Some people say, “Nothing can be done.” They said the same thing before the Gordian knot.
When Alexander the Great arrived, looked at it, and considered the matter, he drew his sword and said, “What cannot be untied must be cut.” Today we have one greater than Alexander—the Christ—to confront every difficulty before us. We must give Christ leave to act; we must untie His hands. And wherever you may be, wherever you can, try to influence others for the good through counsel—not through violence or malice. These people are wretched, and not only they: everyone in the world who has no relationship with Christ is wretched. Look at Sweden, a wealthy nation, and yet consider the suicides committed there and the psychiatric hospitals it has. Thank you.
What is missing is Christ. Dollars are not lacking; systems and methods are not lacking. Christ is what is lacking. So try this personally as well. Yes, yes—it is a personal test: “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” You will see that the Lord is good, beneficial, and necessary, and you will see how things change. Forgive me for speaking on this subject, but I thought I might say a few words. And if we ourselves resolve now to change and to pray every day, a commemoration slip will be placed there “for Andrew and those with him,” just as previously there was one “for George and those with him,” and earlier still “for Constantine and those with him.” They will be included in the prayers of Christians, and you will see the results. Even if we cannot overturn these things, we will certainly limit them, because Christ is good and is moved by the prayers of His people. Amen.

Των αμαρτιών μας έχουμε υποστεί ό,τι έχουμε υποστεί σαν φυλή τόσα χρόνια και θα υποστούμε στη συνέχεια πάλι, πάλι λόγω των αμαρτιών μας. Εάν εμείς όμως θελήσουμε να τροποποιήσουμε, να αλλάξουμε, οποιοσδήποτε να είναι, το μεγαλύτερο λιοντάρι να είναι πάνω, ο μεγαλύτερος σατανάς να είναι απάνω, ο μεγαλύτερος Αντίχριστος να είναι απάνω, φοβάσαι; Μην ακούτε τους ανθρώπους που λένε ότι θα βρούμε χριστιανούς να μας κυβερνήσουν. Πού να τους βρεις; Υπάρχουν και εμείς. Μέτρησε έτσι με τη μεζούρα του Χριστού, όχι με τη μεζούρα τη δικιά μου. Του βγάζω τον άλλον μασόνο, παραδείγματος χάριν. Ο δικός μου δεν είναι, είναι εντάξει ο δικός μου. Εγώ τον βγάζω εντάξει τον δικό μου, αλλά εν σχέσει με του Θεού τη ζυγαριά, μήπως δεν είναι εντάξει ούτε ο δικός μου;
δεν υπέστη ούτε μία ζημιά 400 χρόνια; Ξέρετε ότι υπάρχουνε Χρυσόβουλα και Μολυβδόβουλα υπέρ του Αγίου Όρους; Δηλαδή τι πάει να πει αυτό; Η Παναγία φύλαξε το Άγιον Όρος με τους Τούρκους και έπαθε καμιά ζημιά; Όταν ήρθαν οι δικοί μας σήμερα και ελευθερώθημεν, κινδυνεύει το Άγιον Όρος. Τώρα μάλιστα θα ακούσετε πολλά πράγματα και για την Εκκλησία και για τον μοναχισμό. Κινδυνεύει από χριστιανούς και δεν κινδύνευσε από τους Τούρκους. Ξέρετε ότι το Όρος Σινά, ο άλλος φάρος της Ορθοδοξίας, δεν έχει υποστεί αμυχή ποτέ από κανένα;
Ωφελεί αυτόν που είναι στην πλάνη. Αυτό το καταλαβαίνει ο άνθρωπος; Θα τα ξέρουν οι άλλοι. Τον άνθρωπο να τον βάλει στο τουφέκι, αν ήταν δυνατό να τον κάνουμε εκατομμύριο κομμάτια τώρα, άλλον που είναι μασόνος ή άλλος, ξέρω εγώ τι. Εκατομμύριο κομμάτια. Το ρώτησες τον Χριστό, που εσταυρώθηκε γι' αυτόν, αν του αρέσει αυτό που σκέπτεσαι εσύ; Και αν συμφωνεί ο Χριστός μαζί σου, το ρώτησες; Δεν έχεις αίσθημα εσύ, δεν έχεις αίσθημα. Ή διάβασες αγίων ανθρώπων γνώμες, πώς πρέπει να σκεφτόμεθα έναντι αυτών των θηρίων, έναντι αυτών των ανθρώπων;
