Summary
God has appointed sacramental confession and priestly absolution as the unique means by which sins are forgiven, since neither good works nor private efforts can erase them. Miriam’s leprosy after criticizing Moses demonstrates how judgment and slander defile the soul, while her seven-day exclusion illustrates penance as corrective discipline rather than payment for forgiveness. Repentance, confession, humility, and obedience restore communion with God, bringing the peace and heavenly joy that outward offerings alone cannot produce.

This evening I would like to remain within the spirit of my talks, because among many people one observes...
that each person tries to find his own way of settling the matter of his sins. But there is one way, and one way only. Apart from the way God has appointed through the clergy, there can be no forgiveness of sins. Even the clergy who absolve the sins of others cannot absolve their own sins by themselves. These spiritual fathers who forgive the sins of others cannot forgive their own. This is the most fundamental point.
Do whatever you wish. Accomplish whatever you wish. Credit yourself with every good work, from righteous Abel to the last righteous person at the consummation of the ages: you will not erase a single sin. This is the most fundamental point. If a person misses it—if he does not believe it, take it to heart, and act upon it—there will be no spiritual progress. So this evening I would like to give you an unusual lesson. Through it, I will remind you of, and clearly demonstrate to you, precisely what God has instituted and what He wills. Man...
is soul and body. A human being becomes ill—both physically and spiritually. God has entrusted illnesses of the body to the physician. If you have the Old Testament, open to chapter 38—lambda eta—of the Wisdom of Sirach, and see how extensively God speaks there about the sick, physicians, and medicines. It says, “Give place to the physician, for you have need of him.” The Lord created the physician; medical knowledge comes from God. Likewise, the Lord created medicines from the earth.
We did not bring medicines with us from our mother’s womb. Medicines are made from the things found here, from herbs, through God’s cooperation with the wisdom and knowledge He has given to human beings. And all these things are for what? For the human body.
Yet although there are physicians and medicines for the human body, and physicians are to attend to all bodily diseases, God makes an exception for one disease: leprosy. Is leprosy not a disease? Have physicians not dealt with leprosy for thousands of years? And yet God sets leprosy apart. Physicians are not to pronounce judgment on leprosy. Who is? The priests. It is a strange thing. We hear it many times in the Church, but it escapes our notice. Why, Scripture asks, did God not permit physicians to pronounce judgment...
but instead gave that judgment to the clergy? Someone may ask, “Why is this so?” Again, it is for an extraordinary reason: leprosy is a type, a prefiguration, of sin. Because God intended to entrust sin—the disease of the soul, prefigured by leprosy—to particular persons in His Church, He made leprosy an exception. If, for example, you open Leviticus, which, as you know, is a book of the Old Testament and part of the Pentateuch, and turn to chapter 13—chapter thirteen—you will see God there as another Hippocrates, as a professor of medicine.
He teaches the clergy how to make their judgment according to the kind of lesion the leper has, and when the time comes for the leper to be put outside the city. He is sent outside by the command and judgment of the priest. This is why, if you remember the lepers whom our Lord Jesus Christ encountered, He found them outside, and they cried out to Him from a distance, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” This teaches us that, however much we may wish otherwise, sin is God’s concern, and God wills that it be dealt with in this way. How, then, can we evade it and invent ways of our own?
As human beings, we sin in word, in deed, and in thought. And if we turn to Job, he says, “How is it possible for a human being born of woman not to sin?” He also says that man drinks iniquity like water. Even if his life on earth lasts only one day, he is sinful. There is no possibility of sinlessness in man. God has mercy on us. The Church tells us concisely, “One alone is sinless; one alone has power.” And when the Church calls us “holy” as she invites us to approach with fear, saying, “The Holy Things are for the holy,” we immediately respond, “Are we holy? One is Holy, one is Lord, Jesus Christ.” Are we holy? In what sense are we holy? Are we perfectly pure and spotless?
I am defiled—how can I be called holy? In what sense? He is Holy by nature, while we are holy by grace. From this, then, a person can be brought to his senses, if he is willing to understand: he must not try to find ways to pay for or erase his sins. They cannot be erased that way. There is one unique way, and this is it. If you wish, and if you have the Old Testament, read chapters 13 and 14 of Leviticus. There you will see precisely how God teaches the clergy to deal with lepers. Of course, the following question then arises automatically: “And how can you prove to us...”
that leprosy is a type, a prefiguration, of sin, so that we may accept what you are telling us?” I will answer that too. I can find this teaching near the beginning of Scripture. It concerns the time when God was speaking with Moses and assigning him the task of bringing the people out of Egypt, taking them from slavery, and leading them through the Red Sea and the wilderness toward the Promised Land. When God called Moses and entrusted him with the leadership of this undertaking, Moses tried to withdraw.
He said, “I cannot do this work.” He said this because Moses thought success depended on his own cleverness—on his ability to persuade Pharaoh to let him take the people away. You know that there were six hundred thousand men working every day for the economy of Egypt. Altogether, about three million people came out of Egypt. Pharaoh’s interests, therefore, required him not to let the people go. Moses thought, as I told you, that it was a matter of managing somehow—going there, engaging Pharaoh, finding the right words, and so forth. But Moses was naturally slow of speech. He could not express things easily, so he said, “I cannot go.” God answered him...
He said to him, “Who makes the tongue? Is it not I? Do I not know that you are slow of speech? But you will not go in your own strength; you will go in My strength. You will not go representing yourself; you will go representing Me.” This is something you should know. When you are about to do something good—to speak to someone, to help someone spiritually, and so forth—Satan stands in your way to stop you. He makes you feel ashamed and puts a thousand other obstacles before you. Make the sign of the Cross and say, “My Christ, You go before me.” When Christ goes before us, every road opens. The words will be found, the means will be found, the right time will be found—everything will be found. It is enough for God to go before us, for Christ to go before us. So, among the things God said to Moses—“I know that you are slow of speech”—He also demonstrated to him...
that he was sinful and, as a sinful human being, could not rely on his own ability, but on the power of God. And what do you think God told him? Some of you may have read it, though perhaps without noticing it. He said, “Put your hand into your bosom.” I will read from Exodus—I said Genesis earlier, but it is Exodus—chapter 4, verse 6. “And the Lord said to him”—I will put it more simply for you—“Put your hand into your bosom.” He put his hand into his bosom, and when he drew it out, behold, his hand was leprous, white as snow. Moses was utterly terrified when he drew his hand out from his breast and saw it covered with leprosy. Then God said to him again, “Put your hand back into your bosom.” And he put his hand into his bosom.
When he drew it out from his bosom, behold, it had been restored like the rest of his flesh. God was saying, “First of all, you are sinful. Are you going to accomplish this work? Are you going to persuade Pharaoh? I will persuade him. But you will be My instrument. I want you as an instrument; I do not expect you to be the power, or to succeed through your own cleverness. Pharaoh cannot be tricked, just as the devil cannot be tricked. I want you to understand this, to obey, and to fulfill the role for which I want you.” Since man is sinful, God shows Moses: you are leprous; you are sinful. Here, then, is one proof that leprosy is a type, a prefiguration, of sin. How could you wish to see it demonstrated more vividly?
Open the Book of Numbers, which is also part of the Pentateuch, the first five books of Scripture, and turn to chapter 12. There you will find the three of them: Aaron, Miriam, and Moses. Moses marries without consulting Aaron and Miriam. They thought he had acted entirely on his own, especially because he had taken an Ethiopian woman. They considered it beneath their dignity for him to marry a black woman, an Ethiopian, and so the two of them began to speak spitefully about him behind his back, not to his face. While Miriam and Aaron were speaking this way, suddenly Miriam became white from the crown of her head to the soles of her feet. She was leprous.
Then Aaron understood what had happened, and Miriam understood it too. They realized that this had happened because they had spoken maliciously against Moses. Scripture says that Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman he had taken as his wife, and as a result Miriam was struck with leprosy. The wrath of God was kindled—the wrath of God was kindled when they slandered and condemned a man who knew nothing of it. Take this very seriously. When we sit and gossip, when we accuse others passionately, speak spitefully, and pass judgment on anyone—whether a layperson or a clergyman—we should know that at that very moment our soul becomes leprous. And it is difficult for it to be cleansed, except miraculously, for even today there is no complete cure for leprosy. Medical science has succeeded in rendering patients noninfectious; that is true. Yet hospitals still exist for Hansen’s disease, as leprosy is called. What happened here, then? “The cloud,” Scripture says, “departed from the tabernacle”—that is, grace withdrew from her.
“And behold, Miriam was leprous, white as snow; and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and behold, she was leprous.” But what happened to Aaron? They had both been saying these things. Here we see another lesson to which you must pay attention, because it has enduring authority. What happened to Aaron? Aaron did not become leprous. Why did he not become leprous? Were they not accusing Moses together? Was not one cutting the cloth while the other stitched it? Why, then, was Aaron not leprous? The priesthood does not become leprous. Holy Orders do not sin; the priest sins. Holy Orders do not sin, and this is something we must learn. The priest’s sin does not contaminate the grace given to him.
“God does not ordain everyone,” says the divinely inspired John Chrysostom, “but He works through everyone.” Sadly, many remain far from the Church and from the sanctifying grace of the Mysteries because they have heard, or have already formed the opinion, that a certain priest is sinful. He may be greedy, a liar, enslaved to carnal desires, or whatever else he may be. None of this nullifies what God does. The priesthood does not become leprous; the individual priest does. It is not Father George who becomes leprous as priest, but George as a person. The sin belongs to the person, not to the ministry and not to grace. This is why Aaron the high priest is not shown as leprous; only Miriam is.
These are fundamental truths. They were not written to amuse anyone; that would serve no purpose. They were written to show everyone how these matters truly stand. Leprosy, then, was the result of this sin—of malicious gossip and accusation. In the Old Testament it appeared visibly and starkly: the woman became leprous. Aaron understood that they had sinned and acknowledged it, as the passage goes on to say: “And Aaron said to Moses, ‘I beg you, my lord, do not lay this sin upon us, for we acted in ignorance and have sinned.’” He admits it: we sinned, and that is why our sister became leprous. “Let her not become as one dead.” In other words, have compassion on her and, as the account indicates, pray to God that...
so that this leprosy might be taken away from her. But Moses was a man of goodwill and humility. Did he condemn them because they had condemned him? On the contrary, he was grieved by what had happened and, as the passage goes on to say, he prayed for them. We would have said, “It serves them right,” but Moses said no such thing. “And Moses cried to the Lord, saying, ‘O God, I beseech You, heal her.’” The Lord then said to Moses that He would not heal her immediately. She would be given a canon, a rule of penance: she would go outside the camp, out into the open country, as we might say. She would keep her canon for one week, and then she would be healed. And so it happened: “And Miriam was separated outside the camp for seven days.” There is the canon. “Give me a canon.” “I will give you a canon.”
The canon is corrective and instructive; it is given to help us, and many times it is obligatory. It is not imposed so that you may pay for your sin, but so that you may learn, become accustomed to what is right, and understand. Is the purpose of the canon to pay off your sin? Sin cannot be paid off. Forgiveness is given freely, and the stain is taken away freely through metanoia—repentance—and confession. “And Miriam was separated outside the camp for seven days.” The people waited there and did not set out at all. Only afterward did they depart and journey toward the wilderness of Paran, turning toward the place where the monastery of Saint Catherine stands today. What I have read to you is from Numbers, chapter 12, from verse 1 through the end, including verse 15. I mention this for those who so often raise objections. This, then, is another passage proving...
that leprosy is a type, an image, of sin. A third passage that clearly shows this comes later, in the days of the Prophet Elisha. We read it in 2 Kings, chapter 5. In Syria there was a commander named Naaman the Syrian. He was a great benefactor of the state. He had led many campaigns and rendered great service to his country. Yet despite all the honors he received and everything he enjoyed from the people and the state, there was one “but” in his life, and it diminished all his joy and glory. Listen to how Scripture puts it...
I am reading from 2 Kings, chapter 5, verse 1 and following: “Now Naaman, commander of the army of Syria,” as I shall call him, “was a great man before his master and held in honor, because through him the Lord had given deliverance to Syria. He was a mighty man of valor, but a leper.” But a leper. That says everything. We too often say, “Do you know what this man has accomplished? Do you know who he is? He is a benefactor, a scholar, a man of distinction; he has done this and that.” But is he perhaps a sinner? Is he perhaps a leper? At that point, everything else comes to nothing. For leprosy separates a family and one person from another; it also separates man from God.
Leprosy separates one person from another. In the same way, sin—the leprosy of the soul—separates man from God. Those words, “but a leper,” should bring us up short. How many blessings we enjoy! Many times we enjoy blessings of which we are not worthy, blessings we do not deserve, yet God gives them to us. But we must not therefore continue holding on to sin. Sin is like a knife in a person’s hands. When God sees that dreadful thing, He is not afraid of the person and does not abhor the person; it is the sin that He rejects. Once, some officers had been taken prisoner, and the king went to visit them in the prison where they were being held. When the king arrived...
they still had their weapons. They presented themselves before him, saluted him, and applauded him. But the king remained solemn and accepted none of this attention or welcome. He turned to them gravely and said, “Gentlemen, I do not want your applause. I want your swords.” Christ says the same to us: “Is it your incense and your offerings that concern Me? I want your sins. I was not crucified for incense and offerings, which you can easily bring.” This does not mean that He rejects them—may it never be!—or that He does not accept them. But at the same time, He wants us to surrender our sins, because Christ died for sins. Therefore, when I jealously hold on to my sins, covering them with all kinds of excuses and refusing to offer them up, God accepts nothing else. That which causes...
God to rejoice—and Heaven as well—is the metanoia, the repentance, of one sinner. Read all of Holy Scripture, from Genesis to the Apocalypse, all sixty-seven books, and you will see that joy arises in Heaven “over one sinner who repents.” Heaven keeps festival when a person repents, declares, and confesses his sins—when he casts them down, as we said the other day in the account of Jonah. He throws Jonah into the sea; he casts away the thing that is throwing everything into turmoil. Then Heaven is reconciled with earth, one person is reconciled with another, and the first two petitions heard in the Church truly take effect: “In peace let us pray to the Lord,” and, “For the peace from above, let us pray to the Lord.” But if this reconciliation with our fellow human beings...
and this reconciliation with God have not taken place, then say whatever you like. Sing Byzantine chant, sing the most elaborate and soaring melodies—say whatever you please. What I have been telling you must come first: reconciliation. Thus those words, “but a leper,” overshadow everything. It is the same as saying, “but a sinner.” What good is everything else? A person will die, and we shall go and hear the funeral hymns: “I looked upon the naked bones and said: Who is king or soldier, rich or poor, righteous or sinner?” What remains then of what was good or bad? Does the glory remain? Does the title a person once held remain? Death comes and sweeps all these things away. We must reflect deeply on this now—not on who we are before the world, but on who we are before God. Yet we call blessed those people...
who have managed to rise in the world, to be applauded, and to prevail, without even seeing what they stepped on to climb so high, how they climbed, or whether they have any right to stand where they do. What is their relationship with God? For it is God who establishes firm foundations. If God is not at the foundation, and sin lies there instead, the changing times and storms will come, sweep everything away, and all will be lost. Thus, despite the glory Naaman possessed and although the people honored him because he was courageous and had brought deliverance to the people of Syria, nevertheless, he was a leper.
In the campaigns this man had led as a commander, he had taken many prisoners. Among them was a young Hebrew girl. Because the commander needed a servant, the others decided to place her in his service. And so this young Hebrew girl served in the commander’s household. Someone might call her situation tragic. The poor child saw the man’s glory, but she also saw the misery within his family. Surely, when the commander returned home at midday from his office, as we would say today, his wife could not embrace her husband, kiss him, and say, “Welcome home, George,” and so forth.
Nor could he caress his little child, take the child into his arms, and kiss him. None of that was possible because of the leprosy. The girl saw that he was living in a kind of tomb. Outwardly there was all this glory and splendor, but inside the home there was Hell. She apparently tried to learn what was wrong. As she and her mistress spoke together amid the kitchen work and household duties, she learned that her master had a serious and incurable disease. His wife said, “That is why I am so sorrowful, despite all the glory and honor others show us.” This Hebrew child carried the faith deep within her. That is why Hebrew mothers insist...
that their children must not lose their Jewish identity. If you wish, read the account of Moses’ mother and of Moses himself. We commemorated them only a few days ago. See what she accomplished during the few years he remained with her. Although he later lived in the palace, he never forgot that he was a Hebrew or how he ought to treat his brethren. What can we learn from this? Sadly, we are ashamed even to teach our children how to say good morning in their own language. We would rather say “bonjour,” “good morning,” and other foreign expressions. Today we are renouncing our own Greek language and our Hellenic heritage. Before long, as things are going, we shall learn the hard way. Then we shall understand what Hellenism means, what the Greek language means, and what Orthodoxy means. The destruction has already begun; before long, you will feel its consequences.
The days ahead will follow, and so will every month that still remains. Remember me, whether I am here or over there. Remember the words I am telling you this evening.
So this little girl said, “If only my master were in my homeland, he would be healed.” She had learned about the Prophet Elisha, a great man of God before whom no disease could stand. Her mistress remembered what the girl had said: that in Israel there was a man who could heal leprosy. If someone told us today that there was a man in Moscow who could heal us, would we not go there? Of course we would. If someone told us that at the far end of America there was someone who could cure cancer, would we not travel there?
“If he goes to my homeland, he can be healed.” The next day Naaman went to the king and said, “Give me letters to the king of Israel, so that I may go and be healed.” The king indeed prepared a letter to the king of Israel, saying, “This man belongs to my service, and I ask you to heal him.” He said nothing more. Naaman loaded several wagons with garments, new robes, and gold, took some servants with him, and set out for Israel. When he arrived, he delivered the king’s letters. He was a commander who had defeated Israel and taken prisoners. As soon as they read that the letter demanded the healing of leprosy, they said, “Who can heal leprosy?”
“Who can heal leprosy? Am I God?” They concluded that Syria was looking for a pretext to make war against them again, and the king tore his garments. When it became known that Syria was applying such pressure, “the king of Israel read the letter, tore his garments, and said, ‘Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man sends someone to me to heal him of his leprosy? Consider, please, and see how he seeks a pretext against me.’” They feared that the Syrians would come to war against them and destroy them. Elisha was on the banks of the Jordan, a man of the Spirit. And a man of the Spirit knows what is happening even in the government. He sent word to the authorities, saying, “Do not be troubled, gentlemen.”
“Send this man to me and remain at peace; there will be no war.” So they sent Naaman to the Jordan, and there he went. He arrived in his chariot with his servants and all his retinue, only to receive an instruction through a young attendant. Elisha did not even come out of his hermitage to welcome the commander, speak a few words to him, explain the treatment, or write him a prescription. Instead, he called a young attendant and said, “Go and tell the gentleman outside to go down to the Jordan, immerse himself seven times, and he will be healed.” The young man went out and delivered the message. When Naaman heard it, he became angry and said:
“I thought that when I came here, he would come out to meet me. Since he is a man of God, I expected him to raise his hands and pray to God for me. What is this? What kind of treatment is that?” He ordered the man holding the reins to turn the chariot around. He had come all that way, yet his pride would not let him step down. But among those accompanying him were some of his servants. One of them came forward and said, “My father, we have come from the ends of the earth. If he had required some great thing of us—if he had said, for example, ‘I want five sacks of gold coins’—would we not have done it for the sake of your health? Now he asks nothing from us. He has simply given us an instruction so that we may receive help. Why should we not do it?” The servant spoke wisely. So what stood in Naaman’s way? He preferred...
to remain in his chariot with his leprosy rather than step down and be freed from it. That is pride. “Me, go to a priest—to someone uneducated, to a sinner? Me, go?” It is your leprosy that you are taking there. Your leprosy! Your education and knowledge have no need of the priest, but your soul does. Your sin has need of him—do not deceive yourselves. Your sin needs the Jordan. Do not deceive yourselves with complaints that the priest should have acted one way or another. Many people demand that a priest behave toward them in a particular way; then they take offense, leave, and never return.
They say, “He lives and behaves in such a way; he did this; he received me like that,” and so forth. These, I would say, are excuses of our own day, and we must understand this. We are obliged to do what God directs through His Church and set aside our clever objections. Naaman preferred to return home a leper rather than step down from his chariot. Some of us are the same: puffed up with our learning, we construct a religion of our own out of pride. “I think this; I imagine that; this is what I say.” What do you think, my dear man, and what do you imagine, you poor soul? Your coins are accepted by no bank; they are counterfeit. It is in your own interest to do what the Church tells you, if you want the leprosy to leave your soul. In the end, the simple servant’s reasonable words stopped Naaman in his tracks, disarmed his pride, and he agreed. He agreed.
So he got down, walked to where the river was, and began to immerse himself. He had been told to immerse himself seven times. He went under once—nothing. Twice—nothing. Three times—nothing. Four times, five times, six times. Then, when he went under the seventh time and came up, his skin was restored like the skin of a little child. I do not know whether you have ever seen a leper—what the body looks like, what a terrible disease it is, and how it disfigures a person. His skin became as soft and fresh as that of a baby one, two, three, or five months old. That is how he emerged when he came up from the Jordan the seventh time. And the result was this:
He had become angry because Elisha had not come out and called upon God in the way he expected, as I told you. But “his servants approached and spoke to him,” and he went down. “He immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was cleansed.” His flesh became like that of a little child, and he was cleansed when he immersed himself seven times. This was the command of the man of God and, consequently, the command of God. Do not try to tear away any of the Mysteries of the Church of Christ. Do not try to alter anything, because the sin will remain and the leprosy will remain. You know that today they are trying to tear down the Mystery of Holy Matrimony and replace it with civil marriage.
That is merely what dogs do in the street, cats on the rooftops, hens, flies, and all the animals. What kind of marriage is that? A marriage devised by rulers and the like. Do not tear away any of Christ’s seven Mysteries. All seven Mysteries given by Christ have their purpose. Do you know what else this man said? Pay attention to what we learn here. He said, “Is it possible that I should go down into this little stream, this ditch here? If I had to immerse myself in water, I had the Abana and the Pharpar, two truly great rivers in Syria, where I could have immersed myself and been cleansed. Why should I come here?” The world today says that we should immerse our leprosy in the Ganges. Protestantism has millions of followers; it is a great river.
Papism has millions; it too is a great river. Yet it does not remove the leprosy. This little river—Orthodoxy, with its seven Mysteries—removes the leprosy. This is what removes it. Let the whole world rage as it will; no one else possesses grace. Take water blessed by the papists, and it will begin to stink within a few days unless they have salted it. That is why they add salt to preserve it. It does not remain fresh by itself. Once again, our faith is something tangible—something we can hold in our hands. The other day I told you to take basil and make sourdough. Did you take it and do so, so that you might see the power of God, the power of the Precious Cross? Do you still have basil from the other day? Put flour in a bowl and lay some of the basil from the feast of the Cross on top. It will rise and ferment. If you take an ordinary packet of flour from the shop, who brings this about?
The flour comes from the grocer, but the grace is from the Holy Spirit. Let the papists do it; let the Abana or the Pharpar do it; let the Protestants and the rest do it. No one in the world can do this. A sinful Orthodox refugee can do it. Look at it. This is not philosophy, nor is it theoria, divine contemplation. These are deeds and realities. Put it into action; do not leave it as theoria in outward appearance alone. These are concrete things we hold in our hands. There are many such testimonies here. Invite anyone you wish—a Freemason, a Jehovah’s Witness, a Protestant, a Turk, or anyone at all. Let him see what Orthodoxy does, what this little river does. Some people speak with a false humility and say, “Will the ten of us who are Orthodox be saved?” We will not be saved either if we do not do what is right. We too will not be saved. Who told you that we will be saved simply because we are Orthodox? Who said that? What does Paul say? “If the righteous man is scarcely saved”—if even the righteous man is scarcely saved—where, he asks, shall we end up? Who told you that you will be saved
if you do not do what is right? Here, then, we have a type: the water of the Church and of her Mysteries, and the power this Church possesses to cleanse a person and make his soul like that of a little child. Who can imagine it? No matter how many malignant sores your soul may have, how many sins, how many children you may have killed, or how often you may have defiled your marriage crown, your virginity, or your hands—if you repent and make use of the Orthodox Church, you will become fresh and new, as though you had never sinned. To strengthen us in this truth, in the power of metanoia, repentance, and confession, and in this loving and merciful Mystery, one faithful man says the following: “If your garment is torn somewhere, even if the finest tailor mends it,”
“the repair may sometimes be invisible and you may not notice it. Yet if an expert examines it carefully and diligently, he will discover that it was once torn there. But wherever the Holy Spirit performs surgery and heals the wound, nothing at all remains visible.” Nothing remains visible. Therefore, be careful not to mock grace or the Mystery. Do not confess again sins that you remember having already confessed. As for sins about which you are uncertain—perhaps you confessed them, perhaps you did not—tell the priest exactly that when you go to him: “Father, I will tell you this as well. I may already have confessed it, but perhaps I have not. If I have, then forgive me for repeating it. It was this and this.” Nothing remains visible. You can no longer speak of those sins as still existing. At some point they departed through grace, in metanoia, repentance, and confession.
The Jordan is also a type of humanity. The name Jordan is said to come from Jor and Dan, the two springs from which it rises. It rushes onward and passes through Galilee, into the Sea of Tiberias, and from there flows swiftly into the Dead Sea. Its name is also derived from the Hebrew Yarden, meaning “rushing” or “descending.” Humanity likewise flows from two springs, Adam and Eve, and pours into the Dead Sea of Hades. But from the time Christ came into the world and entered the Jordan, “the sea saw and fled; the Jordan turned back.” Everything changed. Humanity no longer pours into the Dead Sea, but flows toward the Jerusalem above. Are these things accidental? Could Christ not have gone somewhere else in Galilee to be baptized?
These things have their purpose: to help a person believe rightly and act rightly. Here, then, you see leprosy and healing. Now listen to what follows. When the man’s cleansing was complete and he came out with his skin restored, he returned to thank the elder. This time the elder would not remain inside. “I must see him.” Naaman went to his dwelling and said, “Let us leave you some gifts.” “No, we do not accept payment.” “But we brought them all this way. At least take the garments.” “What do we need them for? We want nothing.” Naaman could do no more. Yet he understood that those places were holy and had a special relation to God, so he told his servants to fill four sacks with earth—
two mule-loads, as we would say. He would take that earth back to Syria, spread it on the ground, stand upon it, and pray to God. It was like the Holy Land: when we go to Jerusalem, we take a little earth with us. When we arrive in Tel Aviv, those who understand kneel down and venerate the ground, because it is a place where God walked. You do not understand what the Holy Land means. Naaman felt the same. He took two loads of earth from there, placed them on his wagon, and set out for home. Elisha had a young servant, as I told you, whose name was Gehazi. He had heard that the elder had accepted nothing.
Although Gehazi lived close to the elder, he was not yet free from attachment to worldly things. A logismos—an intrusive thought from Satan—entered him: “We did not ask him for these things; he is offering them to us. Why should we not take them?” He kept this thought within himself. He wanted cloth for a suit, money, and so on. “He is giving them to us; we did not ask for them.” In any case, the elder remained inside while the travelers departed for their homeland. Once they had gone some distance, as we say, Gehazi slipped away without the elder noticing and ran after them. Naaman, riding in his wagon, saw the young man running toward them and said, “Look, that young man is running after us. Perhaps something has happened. Stop, and let us see.” Gehazi arrived there out of breath, and Naaman asked him, “Is everything well? Has something happened?”
“Yes, yes, everything is well.” “Then why are you running? What has happened?” Gehazi replied, “Just after you left, some sons of the prophets arrived from the hill country. The poor men have no clothing and are in need, and I wondered whether you might give them something from what you have with you.” Naaman gladly got down, opened the bundle, unloaded as much as Gehazi could carry, gave him money as well, and told his servants, “Help him carry it back.” When they came near the hermitage, the cunning young man said to them, “You still have a long journey ahead of you. Leave these things here, and I will carry them the rest of the way little by little. Go with God’s blessing.” So they left them some distance from the hermitage and departed. The young man took the goods away and hid them.
After hiding everything and arranging it safely, he composed himself and went into the hermitage to the elder Elisha. Elisha said to him, “Where have you come from?”—or, as we would say, “Where have you been?” Gehazi, his servant, replied, “Your servant has not gone anywhere.” It was as though he were saying, “Why are you asking me where I have been?”
And Elisha said to him, “Did not my heart go with you? You went, and I was there beside you in my heart. When the man turned back from his chariot to meet you, did I not see you?”
“Is this a time to receive silver and garments, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, male servants and female servants?” Is this why we came here? Are we here in the wilderness to acquire material possessions? Is that why we are here? Do you understand? He had caught him, as we say. “Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and to your descendants forever.” And Gehazi “went out from his presence leprous, as white as snow.” Is leprosy a type of sin or not? Because of this deed, did he become leprous or did he not? Leprosy and sin are the same image: sin is the leprosy of the soul today.
Let me tell you of one more case, concerning a king named Uzziah—King Uzziah.
This king once tried to take the place of the priest. He entered the temple and took up a censer. The priest told him, “This is not your ministry, O king.” A king cannot do what a priest does; not even an angel can do what a priest does. Have you ever read Saint Cosmas of Aetolia? He says that if you have one seat and both a priest and a king are present, you should give it to the priest, not to the king. And if you have one seat and both a priest and an angel are present, you should give it to the priest, not to the angel. But the king’s heart grew proud.
His heart was lifted up to his destruction, and he sinned against the Lord his God. He entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense upon the altar of incense. Azariah the priest went in after him, accompanied by eighty priests of the Lord, courageous men, to restrain him. “Where are you going? Who do you think you are—God? That is not your ministry.” They opposed King Uzziah and said to him, “It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord, but for the priests, the sons of Aaron, who are consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have acted faithlessly, and this will bring you no glory from the Lord God.” This was not to the glory of God. But Uzziah had the censer in his hand—
ready to burn incense—and he became angry. While he raged against the priests, leprosy broke out on his forehead before them, in the house of the Lord beside the altar of incense. What did he accomplish? Through his lawless act, he became leprous. Can anyone play games with God? Every person, every tongue, every soul, and every heart that speaks against what God has ordained does nothing but heap leprosy upon leprosy and carry it within the soul. And every leper is then called to show himself to the priests. When God Himself, in the person of Jesus, said to the ten lepers who begged Him for mercy, “Go, show yourselves to the priests,” what was He saying?
We might have said to Him, “But do You want us to recognize the clergy? Did You not give them the authority to order us out of the city? And do You not likewise give them the authority to receive us back into the city? Why should we go to them when we have You here?” “You have Me here, but you must go to them.” And He did not heal them first. He said, “Go and show yourselves.” “Show them what? Heal us, and then we will show them.” Yet as they went, they were cleansed. They were cleansed on the road of obedience. My beloved, do not subject these matters to your own reasoning. Accept them as God has ordained them for us. Put aside the pride of Naaman the commander. Come down from the chariot of your pride.
Find a priest and confess all your sins, from your earliest childhood, from the age of five—all of them. They are not erased by time; they do not grow old, decay, or rust away. Satan keeps them written down, and we shall meet them again. Only those you bring into the light will be taken away. The others will remain, and they will hold us fast. If you will permit me, I shall stop here for tonight, and tomorrow I shall speak to you about some understandable objections that arise again and again concerning this matter. Once again, with God as our helper.

Διδάσκει τους κληρικούς πώς θα αποφαίνονται, κατ' αναλογίαν της ουλής που θα έχει ο λεπρός, και θα έρχεται και σε στιγμή που θα βγαίνει έξω της πόλεως ο λεπρός. Κατόπιν εντολής και γνωματεύσεως του κληρικού θα βγαίνει έξω. Γι' αυτό άλλωστε, αν ενθυμείσθε τους λεπρούς του Ιησού Χριστού μας, τους βρήκε έξω και του φώναξαν μάλιστα από μακριά: «Ἰησοῦ ἐπιστάτα, ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς». Αυτό λοιπόν μας διδάσκει ότι, όσο να θέλουμε εμείς, όσο αυτό είναι θέμα Θεού και ο Θεός θέλει δι' αυτού του τρόπου να τακτοποιείται η αμαρτία, πώς εμείς θα την ξεφύγουμε και πώς εμείς θα βρούμε τρόπους δικούς μας;
Σαν άνθρωποι αμαρτάνομε, είτε λόγω είτε έργω είτε εν διανοία. Και αν μάλιστα χρησιμοποιήσουμε τον Ιώβ: «Πώς είναι δυνατόν άνθρωπος γεννημένος», λέει, «από γυναίκα να μην αμαρτάνει;» Ο άνθρωπος πίνει την ανομία ως ύδωρ, λέει ο ίδιος. Και αν η ζωή του είναι μία μέρα στη γη, είναι αμαρτωλός. Δεν υπάρχει περιθώριο αναμαρτησίας στον άνθρωπο. Έλεος κάνει ο Θεός επάνω μας. Η Εκκλησία μας λέγει επιγραμματικά: «Εἷς Ἀναμάρτητος, εἷς ὁ Δυνάμενος». Και όταν μάλιστα μας λέγει «Ἅγιοις», που μας καλεί στο μετά φόβου και λέει «Τὰ Ἅγια τοῖς Ἁγίοις», εμείς πέφτουμε αμέσως να πούμε: «Εμείς άγιοι; Εἷς Ἅγιος, εἷς Κύριος, Ἰησοῦς Χριστός». Εμείς άγιοι; Από πού κι ως πού άγιοι; Άγιοι πάναγνοι, καθαροί;
Όταν εξήγαγε του κόλπου αυτού, ιδού απεκατεστάθη καθώς η σαρξ αυτού. Και λέει: «Πρώτα, είσαι αμαρτωλός. Εσύ θα πας να κάνεις αυτή τη δουλειά; Εσύ θα τον πείσεις; Εγώ θα τον πείσω. Συ θα είσαι το όργανο όμως το δικό μου. Σε θέλω σαν όργανο, δεν σε θέλω σαν δύναμη, δεν σε θέλω να τα καταφέρεις σαν καταφερτζής. Δεν γελιέται ο Φαραώ, όπως δεν γελιέται και ο διάβολος. Εγώ σε θέλω όμως εσένα να το καταλάβεις και να υπακούσεις και να παίξεις τον ρόλο που σε θέλω». Όσο ο άνθρωπος είναι αμαρτωλός και του δείχνει ότι είσαι λεπρός, ότι είσαι αμαρτωλός. Να λοιπόν μια απόδειξη ότι η λέπρα είναι τύπος αμαρτίας. Πώς θα θέλετε να το δείτε πιο φανταχτερά;
Αν πάει στην πατρίδα του μπορεί να γίνει καλά. Πάει στον βασιλιά την άλλη μέρα και του λέει: «Δώσ' μου επιστολές προς τον βασιλέα του Ισραήλ να πάω να με κάνει καλά». Και πράγματι ο βασιλεύς έφτιαξε επιστολή προς το Ισραήλ και του λέει: «Αυτός είναι άνθρωπος δικός μου και σε παρακαλώ να τον κάνεις καλά». Ούτε του είπε τίποτα παραπάνω. Πήρε κάτι αραμπάδες αυτός, έβαλε κάτι ρούχα επάνω, καινούργιες φορεσιές, έβαλε χρυσαφικά, πήρε μερικούς δούλους και ξεκίνησε τώρα να πάει για το Ισραήλ. Και έφτασε στο Ισραήλ. Φτάνοντας στο Ισραήλ, ενεχείρισε τις επιστολές του βασιλέα. Στρατηγός αυτός, νικητής του Ισραήλ, είχε πιάσει αιχμαλώτους κλπ. Μόλις αντελήφθησαν αυτοί ότι αυτός γράφει μέσα να θεραπεύσει τη λέπρα, ποιος θεραπεύει, λέει, τη λέπρα;
Παπισμός, εκατομμύρια, μεγάλο ποτάμι. Λέπρα όμως δεν βγάζει. Αυτό το μικρό ποταμάκι, Ορθοδοξία με τα Εφτά Μυστήρια, αυτό βγάζει τη λέπρα, αυτό βγάζει τη λέπρα. Ας χτυπιέται κάτω όλος ο κόσμος, ουδείς έχει χάρη. Πάρτε αγιασμόν από τους παπικούς, θα σας βρομίσει μέσα σε λίγες μέρες, εάν δεν τον έχουν αλατίσει. Γιατί τον αλατίζουν, ρίχνουν αλάτι και τον διατηρούν. Δεν διατηρείται. Και ξανά, εμείς έχουμε χειροπιαστή την πίστη μας, χειροπιαστή την πίστη μας. Σας είπα προχθές να πάρετε βασιλικό να φτιάξετε προζύμι. Πήρατε, φτιάξατε, να δείτε τη δύναμη του Θεού, τη δύναμη του Τιμίου Σταυρού. Έχετε βασιλικό από το προχθεσινό; Βάλετε σε ένα μπολ αλεύρι και βάλτε από του Σταυρού βασιλικό επάνω. Αυτό θα φουσκώσει, θα ξινίσει. Αν πιάσετε το κουτί απέναντι, ποιος το ποιεί;
Μπακάλικο αλεύρι, χάρις του Πνεύματος του Αγίου. Ας το κάνουν οι παπικοί, ας το κάνει ο Αβανάς, ας το κάνει ο Φαρφάρ, οι Προτεστάντες και λοιπά. Κανένας στον κόσμο δεν μπορεί να το κάνει αυτό το πράγμα. Ο αμαρτωλός ορθόδοξος πρόσφυγας κάνει αυτό το πράγμα. Το κοιτάξτε το. Δεν είναι φιλοσοφία, δεν είναι θεωρία εδώ. Είναι πράξεις. Την πράξη να δράσετε, όπως είναι η θεωρία σε επίφαση. Είναι πράξεις, είναι πράγματα που έχουν στα χέρια τους. Πολλά υψώματα εδώ. Κάλεσε και όποιον θέλεις, θες μασόνο, θες χιλιαστή, θες Προτεστάντη, θες Τούρκο, θες όποιον θέλεις κάλεσε. Αυτό που κάνει η Ορθοδοξία, που κάνει αυτό το μικρό ποταμάκι, γιατί ορισμένοι ταπεινολογούν. Εμείς δέκα άνθρωποι που είμαστε οι Ορθόδοξοι θα σωστούμε; Ούτε εμείς θα σωστούμε, αν δεν κάνουμε τα σωστά. Ούτε εμείς θα σωστούμε. Ποιος σου είπε θα σωστούμε; Γιατί είμαι Ορθόδοξος; Ποιος το είπε; Τι λέει ο Παύλος; «Ει ο δίκαιος μόλις σώζεται», μόλις σώζεται ο δίκαιος, εμείς λέει πού θα πάμε; Ποιος σου είπε θα σωθείς;
Ο Ιορδάνης είναι τύπος της ανθρωπότητας ακόμη. Ο Ιορδάνης ετυμολογείται από το Ιόρ και Δαν. Είναι δυο πηγές από τις οποίες πηγάζει και έρχεται ορμητικός και διασχίζει. Μπαίνει στη Γαλιλαία, την Τιβεριάδα, και από εκεί εξέρχεται ορμητικός στη Νεκρά Θάλασσα. Ετυμολογείται ακόμη από το εβραϊκό Ιάρδεν, που πάει να πει ορμητικός. Η ανθρωπότητα λοιπόν με τις δυο πηγές, από τον Αδάμ και από την Εύα, εκχέεται στη Νεκρά Θάλασσα του Άδου. Από τότε όμως που ήρθε ο Χριστός στον κόσμο και εισήλθε μέσα, «η θάλασσα είδε και έφυγεν, ο Ιορδάνης εστράφη εις τα οπίσω», άλλαξαν τα πράγματα. Δεν εκχέεται πλέον η ανθρωπότητα στη Νεκρά Θάλασσα, αλλά εκχέεται, πηγαίνει στην Άνω Ιερουσαλήμ. Τυχαία πράγματα αυτά; Γιατί ο Χριστός στη Γαλιλαία δεν μπορούσε να πάει αλλού ο Χριστός να βαπτιστεί;
να θυμιάσει και θυμώθηκε. Και ενώ θυμωνόταν προς τους ιερείς, ανέφυεν η λέπρα εν τω μετώπω αυτού έμπροσθεν των ιερέων, στον οίκο αυτού, πλησίον του θυμιαστηρίου του Θεού. Τι επέτυχε; Να λεπρωθεί εν τη παρανομία του. Μπορεί να παίζεις με τον Θεό; Και κάθε άνθρωπος και κάθε γλώσσα και κάθε ψυχή και κάθε καρδιά που μιλεί κατά των θεσπισμένων δεν κάνει τίποτα άλλο, ειμή να επισωρεύει λέπρα επί λέπρα και φοράει μες στη ψυχή. Και κάθε λεπρός πλέον καλείται να επιδείξει τον εαυτό του στους ιερείς. Όταν αυτός ο Θεός, με το πρόσωπο του Ιησού, είπε στους δέκα λεπρούς που του ζήτησαν έλεος: «Υπάγετε, επιδείξατε τους εαυτούς σας τοις ιερεύσι». Τι έλεγε;
