Summary

Human life continues only by Christ’s will, and every new day should be received as time given for spiritual correction and service to others. Earthly life, possessions, and property are temporary trusts, so Christians must reject greed, settle disputes, forgive others, and manage everything faithfully. The purpose of earthly life is preparation for death, judgment, resurrection, and inheritance of the eternal Kingdom of God.

Allow me to say a few words that may help us in this fleeting life, since Christ is still being patient with us.

I know what you believe about yourselves. Do you believe that you live and exist because you choose to? Do you believe that you live and exist because you take care of yourselves and your health? If you think that way, you are mistaken. Some people are young and imagine that they have a right to grow old. Others look after their health: they sleep with the windows open, have checkups, go to doctors, undergo examinations, watch what they do, and follow diets. So they imagine that this is why they are still in the world. But that is not so. You are here because He whom you see there on the iconostasis wills it.

If Christ does not will it, it makes no difference who you are. And there is a reason why you are living here; there is a purpose. It is for your own good that you are alive, and with the dawn of each new day you should ask Christ: “Why, Christ, did You let me see the light of this day?

Is it so that I may eat a few eggplants, or perhaps some lamb, or drink a glass of wine? Why am I here? Why did You let me live here today? What am I needed for? If I were gone, would Your creation perish? I do not think Your creation would perish, just as it did not perish when so many other people departed—wise men, scholars, and saints.”

So there should be a certain fear within a person: Why did another day dawn for me? Why did evening come, and I did not die today or in my bed? If this fear, this thought, this sharp prod is not within a person, it would have been better for him not to live.

Every person has a mission: first toward himself, and second toward his fellow human beings. We have put up walls, secured our homes and our property, and imagine that we are here while others do not matter. Yet we did not come into this world for ourselves alone; we are here for others as well.

The Christian, above all, has been placed in the world as a light. “You are the light of the world,” Christ says. Yet many of us are not light at all, but darkness—even deep darkness—and we often become the cause of others’ ruin. Many people learned sins from us. Many young women have learned sins from other women, including older women, and those older women have never confessed that they caused others to sin, or to continue sinning. Therefore, living should fill a person with fear and trembling, because Christ will demand an account of how he conducted himself during the

time given to him. Time is spiritual gold for a person. If it were possible for us to go to Hell and, on Christ’s behalf, call out to those condemned there, saying, “We have been commanded to give you whatever you ask. Think carefully—what would you like us to give you?” Do you know what all the condemned of every age would say with one voice? Do you know what they would say? “One minute! Let us return to earth in our bodies and cry out, ‘I have sinned!’” They would ask for that time which God gave them here.

Many reached old age but found no time to repent, to return sincerely to God, to confess, and to receive the provisions needed for the life to come. And they will ask for one minute: “If only I could put on my body once more—the very body with which I sinned—return to the earth, and cry out, ‘I have sinned!’” Woe to the person who wastes his time. How often we hear someone say, “I am going over there to kill a little time.” What is time—a Beast for you to kill? God adds to your time, and you want to cut it short? And do you know how you spend the time given to you today? Talking against this person and that one; talking about your daughter-in-law, your mother-in-law, and your neighbor.

Talking about the widow, the engaged woman, the priest, the government, affairs abroad, and affairs at home—about everyone except ourselves. We talk about others, they talk about us, and it becomes a vicious circle. Yet we ought to be speaking about ourselves. If only a person would reflect that he will depart and never return, because there are no round-trip tickets out of this life. You may travel abroad and tell those back home, “If things do not work out there, I shall come back; wait for me.” Or you may buy a round-trip ticket. But the tickets issued from this life have no return. They are one-way only: you depart, and there is no coming back. So whether things go well for us

or not, there is no return. We have no second chance. And there is no “service center” there, as people say today—no way to make repairs. Wherever the camera lens of death finds each one of us, that is how we shall remain in eternity. Christ has not allowed us to know when we shall die, what we shall die from, or when He will come. These are three fundamental things that no one knows. If a person knew when he would die, he would become the greatest beast in the world. Even now, when he does not know when he will die, the sword of Damocles—death—

hangs over him at every moment. What do I know? I left Athens—but will I return? Who told me that I would? I have just left Didymoteicho to come here, and I tell you, “God willing, I shall be there at seven to speak to you.” But who told me I would arrive? Did anyone guarantee it? I touch this microphone, it carries an electric current, and it could burn me. Has anyone guaranteed that I cannot be burned, suffer heart failure or a heart attack, be struck and killed by lightning, or be killed by a falling live wire? Could I not suffer sudden heart failure? Could I not? What guarantees that I shall live? Nothing. There is no guarantee and no one’s signature promising that I shall live. So what must I do, since I do not know when I shall die? I must be ready at every moment. I have bought a ticket to travel to

Athens on Monday evening, and I carry it with me. “I shall travel,” I say. But since I do not know when I shall make that other journey, should I not always have its ticket ready, validated, and stamped? Do we who are called Christians show such concern? We who come to Vespers and never miss Matins—do we have that ticket in our hands now?

In His love, He did not tell us when we shall die, because we would become beasts. Nor did He tell us what we shall die from, because fear would make us die before our death. Nor did He tell us when He will come. For whether we want it or not, we shall meet Him. Whether we believe it or not. Whether we want it or not, Holy Scripture declares it.

He will come in the fullness of His glory.

Whether we believe it or not, it will happen. How will we be found at that moment? The sensible, upright, and secure person is the one who prepares at every moment to die. Preparing does not make a person die, despite what some people think. Some refuse to make a will because they fear that if they do, they will die. Then they die unexpectedly without a will, and the heirs quarrel over the deceased, trampling upon his head, as it were, and pushing him farther into Hell. Brothers and sisters become divided, people are estranged, and even crimes and murders occur because that person was afraid to make a will and dispose of his belongings properly, honestly, and morally during this life. He left unfinished business behind because he was afraid. Making a will does not cause you to die. Thank you.

Nor do you die because you fail to break a plate when you return from the cemetery, as though breaking it would prevent Death from entering the house again. None of that is true. These things are lies. You do not die because you stopped serving sweets after a death, lest Death taste the sweetness and return; or because you turned the framed pictures toward the wall; or because you wore black; or because you stayed away from the Church for three years and waged war against Christ because Death entered your home. Do not be deceived; the devil is mocking you. One day you will die, and one day I will die. The greatest philosophy and the greatest theology lie in confronting the reality of death.

We all conduct our lives like the snail that sings while it is being roasted. That is how we live. And if someone asks us, “How are you doing? How are things?” we answer, “Fine, fine, Glory to God.” What exactly is fine? Can you tell me what is fine? Is it because your children have jobs, because they have

cars of their own, or because they have a television? Is that why? Have they formed a living relationship with Christ? With the Church? With metanoia—repentance—with Holy Confession, and with Holy Communion? Have they? Then why do you tell me, “We are fine, Glory to God”? Because you have bread to eat? Birds and mice do not work, yet they eat. A person will eat as well. Is that what “fine, Glory to God” means? When there is no spiritual health, no sound judgment, and no sensible preparation for death, how can you tell me that you are well and say, “Glory to God”? We do not know what we are doing. We conduct our lives foolishly—very foolishly. During these few minutes that I am with you, I would like to instill this fear in you. And when I say “fear,” I want to explain what I mean.

It is not the fear that God will strike us, like saying, “I am afraid to go outside at night.” That is not this fear. “I fear God” means: I revere God; I take God seriously; I keep God in mind. Scripture says that a wife should fear her husband—that is, she should respect him, take him seriously, and be mindful of him. That is what it means. I take God seriously. “My God, You opened my eyes today; illumine me. Do not let me become a cause for Your name to be blasphemed. Illumine me, so that my sins may decrease and my virtues increase. Illumine me today, so that I may repair something of what I damaged in the past.”

Help me become truly human toward my fellow human beings. Help me today to separate the wheat and cast the thorns aside—something I have not done until now.” God grants more time to the prudent person. That is why Paul, who had surely grasped these things well and experienced them firsthand, wrote to the Romans—as you will have seen if you read the epistle—and said: “Do you not know that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?” This goodness, this patient forbearance of God—the fact that He does not strike us down, does not seize us in the very act of sinning, but patiently bears with us and leaves us time—helps us to repent. “Do you not know?” Do you not understand that this goodness and patient forbearance of God, when God acts as though He does not understand, as though He does not see, as though He does not hear—

does this mean that God does not exist, or that He is weak? No. This is called the patient forbearance of God. God bears with you patiently and gives you more days and hours in which to repent. Do you know how God acts? Exactly as He acted toward the first murderer, the first wicked man, Cain. And as He acted toward Adam and Eve. This is how God acts even today. Could He not have seized Eve’s hand in the very act, when she reached toward the tree that God had forbidden her to touch under penalty of death? He could have. But He did not seize it. He did not. He let her go on.

She exposed herself to sin, did she not? Did the devil not tell her, “You will become God, you will become God”? Not only did she fail to become God, but she began trembling like a leaf. She saw her nakedness, went into hiding, and made coverings from fig leaves—our modern bikinis. Did she accomplish anything? God left her until the afternoon; He did not go to her at once, so that she might think about it and see her failure. And when He came, He said, “Adam, Adam, where are you?” Did You not know where he was, O God? “I know, but I am helping him to repent.” “I am naked,” Adam said. “I heard Your voice and hid. I heard You walking,” he said, “and I hid.” Why are you hiding? “Have you perhaps eaten from the tree of which I told you not to eat?” Perhaps? God already knew. He was helping him

to repent. But nothing came of it. Adam shifted the blame. What did he say? “Am I at fault? The woman You gave me deceived me. Did You not make her? Why are You holding me responsible? You should have made her good instead of making her cunning. How am I to blame?” That is what this beloved man said. “Eve, what is this you have done? Why did you do this?” “Me? The serpent deceived me.” And who made the serpent? “How am I to blame?” They shifted responsibility. Is this not what people do today? Do they not shift the blame? “He made me do it; he told me to; he led me astray.” God does not seize anyone in the very act. What did He say to Cain? “Where is Abel, your brother?” And what else did He say to him? “Why are you scowling? Why are you troubled?”

“Take care. I did not accept your sacrifice; therefore Abel, whom you are thinking of killing, is not to blame.” Yet God did not restrain his hand. “Kill him, if you choose; you are free. It was I who did not accept your sacrifice. Take care: you must correct yourself. Abel is not to blame.” Yet Cain paid no heed even to this. Did he not kill him? And again God was present. God knew where Cain had hidden him and how it had happened; yet again He did not seize his hand. He went to help Cain repent and said to him, “Cain, where is Abel, your brother?” What should Cain have done at that moment? He should have burst into tears. Instead he said, “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

Was God telling him to go and look for Abel? And did Cain think he had concealed him? Yet we know what Adam and Eve said, and what Cain said afterward. Just as the first human beings sinned in freedom, while God bore with them and did not seize them in the act to punish them, so it is with us. If someone could gather together the sins of churchgoers—of those who attend the Church, light candles, even bring offerings to the Church, receive antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after Liturgy, and even receive Holy Communion—the entire British fleet could not carry them. And even here now there are people

who have sins and yet are outwardly religious. God adds days so that the field may be put in order. But nothing happens. Can more time simply be added while the sins diminish? No—except, of course, for certain people who truly struggle, who have understood, who feel and perceive what is happening, who respond with a sense of honor, and who strive to make good use of the goodness and patient forbearance of God. My dear friends, if God had seized me in the very act while I was living my former life, I would not be here at this moment. You would not be listening, I would not be speaking, and there would have been no possibility that I too might one day be saved. But the patient forbearance of God, as Paul writes so beautifully, waited for me to complete my course, as we say of an illness running its course, and to reach me

at the right time and speak to me, so that I too might accept His call and begin the struggle. I had to clear the filthy, untilled field behind me and slowly begin to cultivate it. Then perhaps I too might one day set my soul in order and surrender it to Him. For it is not mine; it is His. He has purchased it. He purchased it with blood, and at a very great price. It has cost so much blood. Our life does not belong to us and is not in our own hands. It is not ours; we are only managing it today. It has been paid for with His own blood. Every soul has the blood of Christ as its price for eternity. He is the One who purchased us at so great a price, with blood. We buy apartments, cars, securities, and I do not know what else with money; but He gave His blood and purchased us.

These, then, are truths every Christian must accept. We are here only temporarily. We are migratory birds, like swallows that come, build their nests, make something for a little while, and then depart. We have no permanent city here. We did not come here in order to remain alive forever. Pay attention, and I will tell you our purpose: man does not come into the world merely to live. Man comes into the world to die, and he dies in order to live. Eternal life is not here. Of that Kingdom there shall be no end; but every earthly kingdom will come to an end. A person does not know whether he will live one hour, one year, or ninety years. He does not know. But he does know that he will die.

Man’s destination is there, and he comes here to be tested. Here is the playing field, here is the track, here is the ring, as they say, where we will wrestle with the devil and, with Christ’s help, overcome, so that we may go there. Then his way may be blessed, and the Church may gladly send him forth, saying, “Blessed is the way in which you walk today.” A person must quickly take to heart what I have told you. He must see himself as temporary, as a steward even of his own life. A steward. I repeat: our life does not belong to us. It belongs to Him. All these material things so often transfix us,

entice us, and drag us downward.

Whether it is called money, gold, or anything else, many people have lost their souls because of these material things. There are brothers who have nearly killed one another over a strip of land, though they brought nothing into this world. Their hands were empty when they came, and empty they will be when they depart. Yet they spend years in court over a strip of land. They have never reflected deeply or truly considered the matter. “Take another meter, my brother. Do you want more? Take one more meter.” One man thinks, “It is mine,” and the other says, “It is mine,” though it belongs neither to you nor to me. It belongs to Him.

Not yours, not mine—His. We came with empty hands, naked and weeping, and with empty hands we will depart from this world. We are stewards in any case, and therefore, as stewards, we must be honest, with our accounts always in order, so that we need fear no reckoning. Yet people who have attended church for years remain in conflict and will not even say good morning to one another. Still, they have the audacity to say they believe. They have the audacity to recite the “Our Father” without walking out when it condemns them; to remain inside when the words are proclaimed, “Let us love one another,” and “That with one mind we may confess,” though they do not love and will not even exchange a greeting. “I will take you all the way to the ends of the earth; I will take you before the Supreme Court!”

You may take me there—but where will they take you tomorrow? This is how people live, while God patiently bears with them. God overturns our beds, sends earthquakes, permits wars and so many other things, and today utter destruction threatens us. Yet nothing changes; we simply carry on with our business. There is no metanoia, no repentance, no return, no serious reflection on these matters. I remember what I was telling you earlier: many people claim to have justified disputes. Brothers do not speak to one another for years. Why? Over things that are not theirs. They are merely managing them. It is said that once, in a certain village, two brothers had come to the point of drawing knives over a piece of farmland or an orchard.

The villagers learned of it and tried in every way to reconcile them. Nothing worked. “It is mine,” said one. “It is mine,” said the other. “Mine, mine,” each insisted, and so on. They came close to killing one another. In that village there was a prudent elder, a wise old priest whose counsel everyone sought in one way or another. Some of the calmer villagers said, “Why do we not ask Father Nicholas to go to them? Why not have them both hear Father Nicholas’s judgment, and afterward they can do whatever they choose?” In the end they agreed, because the elder was universally respected and recognized as a man of worth. So they brought him there. “Where is the land you are disputing, children?” he asked. They took him somewhere nearby, to an orchard or a field.

“Let me see what the dispute is about. Let me have a look.” “Here, Father Nicholas, this belongs to me.” “No, no, no,” said the other. “It belongs to me,” and he pointed to it. “Very well, then. What follows? It must belong to one of you. It cannot belong to both of you, can it? One of you,” he said, “must be lying.” Then he said, “Wait here while I ask.” “Ask what? And whom are you going to ask?” The elder knelt down and whispered something to the earth, a private exchange between him and the ground.

Then he put his ear to the earth. “Ah, I understand. I understand what it is saying.” The two brothers looked at him and began to laugh. “What is this? Is he talking to the ground?” The elder stood up and said to them, “You have both made a mistake.” “What mistake have we made?” they asked. “I asked the earth,” he said. “And what did the earth tell you, Father Nicholas?” “It told me that you belong to the earth; the earth does not belong to you.” They were stunned.

“You,” he said, “will go into the earth. The earth does not belong to you.”

Has any one of us ever reflected deeply enough to understand how things truly stand? Is there any chance of that? I will continue. If, then, a person were willing to reflect deeply...

on the temporary nature of our life here, and on the patient forbearance and love of God, he ought to be ashamed. He should always keep his head bowed and not dare to lift it and look toward Heaven, where God dwells. Yet not only do we have sins that remain unresolved, unrepented, and unconfessed—many of them dating from our earliest childhood—but we also continue to sin.

Many people even come as far as confession, though I say this with great sorrow and grief.

Thank you. But there is no confession. “We are not accustomed to it,” they say. What kind of custom is confession? Is it not one of the seven Mysteries? When Christ rose from the dead, did He not, that very evening, bless His disciples, breathe upon them, and say, “Receive the Holy Spirit”? “What are we to do with it, Lord?” “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Did not the honorable Forerunner hear people’s confessions and baptize them in the Jordan? Did not Christ Himself come and receive a baptism of repentance in the Jordan? And He came up immediately out of the water because He had nothing to confess. And does John not say in his epistle that...

“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us”? And does he not say elsewhere—or do we simply not read these things? Do we read the almanac instead? What do we read? We look at our horoscopes, foolishness, and everyone’s nonsense. But do we read about eternity and about our soul? Does John not say, “My little children, I am telling you not to sin. But if anyone should sin—he is human. Perhaps it was through his eye or his hand; perhaps he was insulted or pushed; perhaps he was careless or did not know, and he sinned. If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous”? We shall go to Him and tell Him everything.

Did He not tell the parable of the Prodigal Son? Are we not prodigals ourselves? Are we not far from the Father’s house? Do we who come here receive Holy Communion? Do we sit at the feast of the fatted calf whenever we come to Church? No. Are we not prodigals, then? When the Prodigal returned, what did he do? “I have sinned against heaven and before you,” he said. He repented, arose, and confessed; and only then did his father restore him, clothe him in the first robe, and bring him to the fatted calf, so that he might receive Christ in Holy Communion. What are we waiting for? Are we not to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven? Does He not say in the Gospel of the Judgment, “Come, you blessed, and inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world”? Yes or no? The Kingdom is waiting for us.

What are we going to inherit—children and fields? The earth and the works in it will pass away. We await a new heaven—kainon, spelled in Greek with alpha and iota, meaning new—and a new earth, truly new. All these present things will be gone: civilizations, palaces, astronauts, Sputnik, and everything else. All of it will vanish in a fraction of a second. New things will come, in which righteousness will dwell. The Kingdom of Heaven, then, needs royal children. Who inherits a kingdom? We do. When a king dies, will we, ordinary laypeople and common mortals, go and inherit his kingdom? Will it not pass to the king’s children, to the princes? Does man know that he is a prince, a royal child? Does he know it? Is he one? How does a human being become a royal child?

He receives a transfusion of royal blood. Who is our King? Christ—the King who opened His veins, gives us His blood, and makes us royal children as well. On the iconostasis here, below, there is a scene which we sing about on Great Friday. In the Lamentations offered to Christ, Christ is presented as the pelican. The hymn says, “Like the pelican, O Word, wounded in Your side...” When the pelican returns to its nest and finds that its young have been bitten by the serpent and poisoned, and are about to perish and die...

It immediately pierces its side and gives them its blood to drink. “You gave life to Your dead children.” It gives them its blood to drink, and they do not die. This is what Christ has done. When the serpent, Satan, bites us, Christ gives us His Body and Blood, and we come alive. If you and I have no relationship with Christ, who offers Himself freely at every Divine Liturgy so that we may receive Him, will we ever become royal children? We shall always remain with the Adamic blood of fallen Adam, which continually pulls us downward and toward Hell. But if we receive this blood transfusion from Christ the King, we become royal children by grace, and thus one day we too shall be able to inherit the Kingdom.

The Kingdom of Heaven is not wages earned for work; it is not a day’s pay. Some people say, “Do good works.” You do good works—is that all? You are mistaken. Good works secure a place in Paradise, but they do not secure entrance. It is one thing to have a six-room penthouse waiting for you up there in Paradise, and another thing to possess the key that lets you enter and reach it. The key that lets you enter and go up to that penthouse is Christ.

If you have no relationship with Christ here before you, at this beautifully carved wooden gate, then you have no key to reach the place you prepared through your good works. Both are necessary: good works, and also faith in Christ—a right and living relationship with Christ. Let me make it even simpler, using what you see before you. Here in the center there is always an image of the Mystical Supper. Why is the Mystical Supper there? Because the whole world depends upon it—upon the Holy Table and upon the Mystical Supper that took place on the evening of Great Thursday. And what begins on either side of the Mystical Supper?

A vine. Look at it, with its leaves and grapes. What does Christ say about this in the fifteenth chapter of John? “I am the vine; you are the branches. He who abides in Me bears much fruit.” Whoever is cut off from the vine withers, He says, and is cast into the fire. Do you see? If we cut a branch from the vine stock, will it put forth leaves or grapes? No, because its life has stopped. It has been cut off from the stock, from the vine; it no longer draws sap, and so it withers. Every person who does not come to be united with the Holy Chalice, to drink and draw life-giving sap...

from the Holy Chalice—from Christ—is cut off. Nothing remains. “Without Me you can do nothing.” You are dead. You are the living dead. You have a name that says you are alive, but you are dead. What did the father say to the elder brother about the Prodigal Son? “This brother of yours was dead and is alive again.” But how was he dead? He was out enjoying himself with women. Exactly. He was far from his father’s house, far from home, far from the table where the fatted calf was served. Every such person is dead. He may get into his car and go for a drive on Sunday morning, but it is a cemetery. You ought to put a flag on the car declaring that a living dead man is inside.

The bell rings in the morning, but the daughter is asleep because she came home at dawn—or the son is asleep. Hang out flags and make a great commotion in the hallway, so that everyone will know whether that person is alive or dead. A person is alive when he comes to Church—and not when he comes to display his fine clothes, throw some money into the offering, or look for a candle as tall as himself. No! He is alive when he comes here to be united with Christ. Only the branch that remains upon the vine stock and draws from it is alive. And what does the branch draw? Whatever the stock contains. And what does the stock contain? It contains sugar, alcohol, and water. Look at what is found in the wine produced by the grapes. Where did the grapes get it? From the vine stock. So when you draw divine life from Christ, what do you receive? Everything Christ possesses. A person receives twenty-three graces when he receives Holy Communion.

Read the prayers of Basil the Great and see what a person receives in Holy Communion. And when he does not receive Holy Communion, what does he receive? He is deprived of twenty-three graces. How, then, can a person become a royal child on his own, without receiving Holy Communion, so that he may have the right to inherit the Kingdom? The Kingdom is not earned wages; it is inherited. God is not an employer paying a day’s wages. The Annunciation—switch it on.

You can turn on the switch, connect this lamp to the current, and it will shine. Yet another lamp, a hundred times more expensive, may give no light and remain dead because it has no connection with the light, the electric current, or life. People come to Church and remain far away. At the end they receive antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after the Liturgy, and even scatter its crumbs over their heads so that they fall to the floor and are trampled underfoot; then they imagine they have accomplished something. What is this antidoron you receive in Church? Have you ever asked? “What is your name?” “My name is antidoron.” What does that mean? It means that I am not the Gift itself; I am something given instead of the Gift. Where is the Gift? In the Holy Chalice. Do you know what antidoron can mean, my beloved? It can stand as a witness for the prosecution—Hell, nothing but Hell—except for those who have made their confession and have a canon, a rule of prayer...

not to receive Holy Communion for a certain period—forty days, a month, years, or whatever penance their spiritual father has assigned. For everyone else, the antidoron ought to burn in their hands when they receive it without receiving the Gift. The purpose is not to receive antidoron here, or merely to receive the Theotokos portion. The Theotokos does not save; the Theotokos intercedes, while Christ saves. Why do you not wish to receive Holy Communion? Why do you not come? “But I am unworthy; I am a sinner.” Then why do you not go and put your life in order? Do you not fear God? Do you not fear death? Why are you not afraid to remain a sinner? Many women bring their children to receive Holy Communion. And then what? Why do you yourself not receive? Because you kill the others or prevent the others from being born. Forgive me, but did you bring this child to receive Holy Communion? Do you think you can deceive Christ and give the child Holy Communion? If only these things could be brought fully into the light.

Then we would truly enter the Church. I do not want to drive anyone away from the Church; I want people to enter the Church and be benefited by it. You should not enter the Church if you have no intention of receiving Holy Communion. The priest should come out and read the sentence of excommunication, because those who do not receive Holy Communion the following Sunday are excommunicated. He has the Canons of ecclesiastical law in his hands. What? Do they apply them in this way? There is a Canon stating that priests themselves are deposed if they do not receive Holy Communion every Sunday and every time the Divine Liturgy is celebrated, unless another impediment prevents them. And when the Holy Apostles impose excommunication upon anyone who does not receive Holy Communion, what am I to say now? “Take the antidoron”? The priest says, “The blessing of the Lord,” not “salvation.” But when he gives you the Body and Blood, then he says, “For the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.” That is the entrance.

This is called the Beautiful Gate. Is it beautiful because it is finer than that door or the other one? No. It is called beautiful because of the purpose it serves and the work it performs. It is beautiful because through it souls enter the Kingdom of Heaven. They do not go through that side or the other side. The Most Holy Theotokos is here, and behind, in the center. Let me speak about these two: she who took the place of the first Eve, and He who took the place of the first Adam. Are these things here by chance? Did people simply come into the church and arrange and decorate them according to their own taste? They are not hung here by chance, and neither is He placed there by chance. Nothing is placed here accidentally; everything has its purpose. Here, then, is the old Eve.

The old Adam and Eve once stood here, and they closed this gate. The first two human beings closed it through their sin and disobedience. But when the new Eve came and said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word,” she obeyed. And when the new Adam came and “became obedient unto death, even death on the Cross,” everything changed and this gate opened. This iconostasis represents the sin that the first two human beings placed between God and man. Then Christ, the new Adam, came and was crucified outside the camp, as Scripture says, beyond the walls of Jerusalem. And what was the first miracle when Christ said, “It is finished,” upon the Cross? What was the first miracle? The veil of the Temple was torn from top to bottom. This door opened; this gate opened. And now the faithful sinner comes...

through the intercessions of the Theotokos. The Savior, who gives him His Body and Blood, transforms him, makes him His brother, and through this gate sends him into the Kingdom of Heaven. This is the way souls enter. Every soul that does not come to be reconciled with Christ, bring Him its sins, and receive His Body and Blood has no entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven. Let that person do whatever he wishes and accomplish whatever he can: only the Body and Blood of Christ are the entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven. Many people listen to Satan, who speaks to them not while they are sinning, but afterward: “You are far too sinful. There is no salvation for you. Where could you possibly go?” The road to the Kingdom of Heaven is closed to no one.

Everyone can pass through, if only they are willing. Someone once asked, “When the veil of Solomon’s Temple was torn open, did it leave a great opening, a vast chasm? How wide was the opening?” And he received this answer: “It opened wide enough for the greatest sinner in the world to pass through.” No one can say, “I am too sinful.” Leave the excuses behind. Practice metanoia, repentance; confess your sins from your earliest childhood and do not be afraid. Then come here and receive the Body and Blood of Christ, so that you may be transformed from an earthly being...

—with the addition of one little iota—not merely earthly, but new, renewed; from earthly, become spiritual; from temporary, become eternal. For there is a prayer—the fathers know it, and so do you if you read—which says: “How can I, who am clay, partake and be made incorruptible? How can I, who am clay, receive the fire of God and not be consumed, but be transformed?” Christ is the One who transforms man. If people paid attention and understood the words spoken here, they ought to tremble when they enter the Church unprepared to receive Holy Communion—or when they do not come to Church at all. For after Holy Communion, the priest comes out holding Christ in his hands and says: “Save, O God, Thy people.”

“And bless Thine inheritance.” What is this inheritance? He asks God to save His people, but to bless His heirs. The people are not the heirs; the people are those who did not come to receive Holy Communion. The heirs are those who came and became brothers and sisters of Christ. For Christ said: “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” And Christ also said: “And I will raise him up at the last day.” By receiving Holy Communion, a person becomes, by grace, a younger brother or sister of Christ. God the Father possesses the Kingdom, and He has one Son by nature, Christ. He does not have many natural children, but one. Yet Christ appears before the Father and says: “You know, Father, I have other little brothers and sisters as well; others too have believed in Me. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.”

“Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” Christ has other younger brothers and sisters: all who believe in Him, receive Him in Holy Communion, and have been baptized in His name. And He says: “The whole Kingdom is not Mine alone; it is theirs as well.” How, then, can you not be afraid when you are not among these heirs—when you have not come to receive Holy Communion and become a brother or sister of Christ, so that you too may have a place in the Kingdom? If you die tonight, where will you go? You have done good works—but how will you enter? Christ is the entrance. If you remain outside, it is because you have no key, no ticket. Bind these words to your heart and hold fast to them. “Heaven and earth will pass away”—I do not know where else these words may travel. They are eternal words, and we need them: I who speak them and you who hear them. Change your lives!

Stop living this way. Sadly, we are like animals tethered to a mulberry tree, pawing at the ground and wearing away the soil beneath their feet. We are merely marching in place. Set out for the Kingdom of Heaven. Never come to the Church without receiving Holy Communion. Keep the fasts—Wednesdays and Fridays, and the seasons of Great Lent. Go regularly to Holy Confession, confessing your sins from your earliest years. Live in love with everyone and forgive from your heart. Do not be ruled by pride, wanting to punish someone else, vindicate yourself, or put him in his place. I often hear people say, “I must put him in his place,” or, “I put him in his place.” But in doing so, you yourself have left your proper place. “I have my dignity,” you say. Yes.

But if you pursue your personal dignity, you will lose your Christian dignity. Choose not to lose your dignity as a Christian. Turn the other cheek, as Christ taught, when you are struck before the Pilate of our own day, so that you do not lose your Christian dignity. Whatever happens will pass; it is not the end of the world. Let them insult you, wrong you, and do whatever they will. They cannot take your soul. Saint Kosmas of Aetolia, that father of our nation, once said in a sermon: “They may take your animals, your fields, your houses, and your children. But they cannot take your soul or your Christ unless you surrender them.” And so it is. Let us put aside our pride. Let us seek a spiritual father.

First, we ourselves must confess what is within us. “I am waiting for the priest to draw out my confession.” The priest is not a medium, a fortune-teller, or someone who reads coffee grounds. “The priest did not ask me.” The doctor may not ask you either, but you yourself tell him: “Doctor, I hurt here too. Doctor, I hurt there as well. Doctor, when I eat this, that happens to me.” You tell the doctor everything and wear him out with the details. In the same way, you must tell the priest whatever is troubling you. You must say it yourself. Do you think that if you do not tell him, the priest will somehow say it for you? He cannot. Priests do not know everything; how could they know each person’s whole life? We must tell them ourselves. Today, when knowledge has multiplied and there are so many ways to learn about our transgressions, ignorance is no excuse. We have reached the moon, yet we do not know what is happening twenty-two centimeters inside us. We have landed on the moon, but we have not landed within ourselves. How long will God continue to wait? There is no room left for ignorance.

“I did not know.” Did you not know about lustful looks and words? Did you not know about drunkenness and abortion? Then what are you doing? Did you not know about slander? Then what are you doing? Did you not know about dishonorable acts? Then what are you doing? What have you learned, and how are you living? How long has this been going on? God has been waiting for you for years. There are people who do not even know how to say the Our Father correctly. I have just seen people come in who did not make the sign of the Cross properly. That is the Cross. Instead, you twist your hand about and make some caricature of it. Satan fears the Cross; he does not fear the caricatures you make. You cannot even make one proper sign of the Cross. God has waited for you all these years. How do you expect to be delivered? How do you expect to escape? Do you truly want to? This is not easy, as you understand. So, then: make a systematic change in your way of life—all of us who hear these things, and those who will hear them because they are being recorded. These recordings travel throughout the world. Change your lives. Return to the Church.

Be reconciled with everyone, whatever the sacrifice, even if it means accepting a loss. If someone asks for your shirt, give him your coat as well, so that you may be delivered and saved. The time is near. No one has told us, as I said at the beginning, that we will still be here tomorrow. We plan for years ahead—to marry off our children, to watch them grow, to educate them, and so on. We will do all these things, but we must remain ready at every moment. And we must help others. We must guide other people toward Christ. Just as our discouraging words can lead them onto the devil’s path, so we must help them turn back. Someone says, “We were foolish and had children; you should enjoy your life.” Woe to you—woe to you when you stand before Christ and answer for the niece to whom you spoke such words.

She discouraged that other woman, and the woman went and aborted her child, or tried to avoid having one. Woe to you. Do you know how many such heavy burdens hang upon many men and women? Woe to you. Alas for us if we do not correct ourselves! Instead of helping and saying, “Take care, for God’s sake, not to become murderers. Do not obstruct the path of some future scientist, inventor, or saint. Whatever God gives you, God knows why,” we have devised our own system and set ourselves against God. God desires coworkers; He creates souls to live eternally. Take courage. I will pray, Athina. This is what we are trying to do: to withstand this downward slide and destruction, this cancer within the family and this cancer within the Church. Before long, will there be any children left to hold the priest’s candle?

And alas for us if this Church disappears because of what people have done. That is where we are heading, with families having one child, two children, or none at all. We say, “We do not want you, child; we do not take you into account; you do not matter to us.” Let each person reconsider; I do not know what else to say. Pray that Christ will show you, and He will bring to mind many hidden axes laid at the root, many things that lie concealed. You must bring them into the light if you want to be delivered. Forgive me. I do not know whether we will see one another again in this world. But there is also Heaven, and we can meet there if we desire it. Forgive me for the manner and tone in which I spoke. But I spoke to you out of the abundance of my heart.

Εάν δεν το θέλει ο Χριστός, οποιοσδήποτε κι αν είσαι. Και για να ζεις εδώ υπάρχει λόγος. Υπάρχει ανάγκη. Είναι το συμφέρον σου που ζεις και να το ρωτάς τον Χριστό κάθε μέρα που ξημερώνει: «Γιατί, Χριστέ, ξημέρωσα σήμερα;

τας Αθήνας. Και το έχω μαζί μου. «Θα ταξιδέψω», λέω. Τώρα που δεν ξέρω πότε θα ταξιδέψω, δεν θα έπρεπε να το έχω το εισιτήριο πάντοτε έτοιμο, θεωρημένο, εσφραγισμένο; Υπάρχει τέτοιο ενδιαφέρον από μας τους λεγόμενους Χριστιανούς; Εμείς που ερχόμαστε στον Εσπερινό και δεν αφήνουμε Όρθρο, έχουμε εισιτήριο τώρα στο χέρι;

να μετανοήσει. Τίποτα. Μεταβίβασε την ευθύνη. Τι είπε; «Εγώ φταίω; Η γυναίκα που μου έδωσες με ξεγέλασε. Εσύ δεν την έφτιαξες; Τι μου ζητάς εμένα ευθύνη; Ας την έφτιαχνες καλή, μην την έφτιαχνες πονηρή. Σε τι φταίω;» Αυτός ο αγαπητός. «Εύα, τι εποίησας ούτω; Γιατί το έκαμες αυτό;» «Εγώ; Ο όφις με εξαπάτησε». Ποιος τον έφτιαξε τον όφι; «Σε τι φταίω;» Μεταβίβασαν την ευθύνη. Αυτό δεν κάνει σήμερα ο άνθρωπος; Δεν μεταβιβάζει την ευθύνη; «Με έβαλε, μου είπε, με παρέσυρε». Δεν πιάνει επ’ αυτοφώρω ο Θεός. Στον Κάιν τι είπε; «Πού είναι», λέει, «ο Κάιν, ο αδελφός σου, Άβελ;» Και τι άλλο του είπε; «Γιατί», του λέει, «κατσούφιασες; Γιατί είσαι στενοχωρημένος;

Πρόσεξε. Στη θυσία εγώ δεν δέχθηκα τη δικιά σου, άρα δεν φταίει ο Άβελ, που σκέπτεσαι να τον σκοτώσεις». Το χέρι δεν το πιάνει όμως. «Σκότωσέ τον, ελεύθερος. Εγώ δεν δέχθηκα το δικό σου. Πρόσεξε, εσύ πρέπει, δεν φταίει αυτός». Και εντούτοις αυτός δεν το πρόσεξε ούτε αυτό. Δεν τον σκότωσε; Και πάλι παρών ο Θεός. Και ο Θεός ήξερε και πού τον έχει κρύψει και πώς έγινε, και πάλι δεν του έπιασε το χέρι και πηγαίνει και τον βοηθάει να μετανοήσει και του λέγει: «Καΐν, πού είναι ο Άβελ, ο αδελφός σου;» Τι έπρεπε να πει εκείνη τη στιγμή; Έπρεπε να αρχίσει τα κλάματα. «Τώρα», λέει, «φύλακας του αδελφού μου είμαι;

Τι πρόκειται να κληρονομήσουμε; Παιδιά και χωράφια; Η γη και τα εν αυτή έργα θα φύγουν. Καινόν ουρανόν, με άλφα-γιώτα, καινούριον, και καινή γη προσδοκώμεν, και καινούρια γη, καινούρια. Πάνε αυτά. Πολιτισμοί, μέγαρα, αστροναύτες, Σπούτνικ και λοιπά, τα πάντα, έφυγαν. Σε κλάσμα δευτερολέπτου θα χαθούν όλα. Καινούρια θα 'ρθουν, όπου δικαιοσύνη θα κατοικεί. Η Βασιλεία λοιπόν των Ουρανών θέλει βασιλόπουλα. Ποιος κληρονομεί τη βασιλεία; Εμείς. Όταν πεθάνει ένας βασιλιάς, θα πάμε εμείς, οι λαϊκοί, οι κοινοί θνητοί, να κληρονομήσουμε βασιλεία; Δεν θα την πάρουν τα βασιλόπουλα; Θα την πάρουν οι πρίγκιπες. Το ξέρει ο άνθρωπος ότι είναι πρίγκιπας, ότι είναι βασιλόπουλο; Το ξέρει; Είναι; Πώς ο άνθρωπος είναι βασιλόπουλο;

Αν με το Χριστό δεν έχεις σχέση εδώ μπροστά σου, στο ξυλόγλυπτον, στην ωραία αυτή λεγόμενη πύλη, δεν έχεις κλειδί για να πας εκεί που έχεις φτιάξει με τα καλά σου έργα. Χρειάζονται και τα δύο: και καλά έργα αλλά και πίστη στο Χριστό, ορθή και οργανική σχέση με το Χριστό. Στο κάνω ακόμη πιο λιανά. Θα σας μιλήσω από τα δεδομένα σας. Μες στη μέση εδώ πάντοτε υπάρχει ο Μυστικός Δείπνος. Γιατί υπάρχει ο Μυστικός Δείπνος; Διότι από εκεί εξαρτάται ο κόσμος όλος. Από την Αγία Τράπεζα, από το Μυστικό Δείπνο που έγινε τη Μεγάλη Πέμπτη το βράδυ. Από το Μυστικό Δείπνο ένθεν και από το Μυστικό Δείπνο εκείθεν τι ξεκινάει;
