Summary
The lecture recalls that Orthodox Christian life requires prayer, fasting, repentance, confession, worship, frequent Holy Communion, forgiveness, and active spiritual vigilance. The Holy Spirit sanctifies Baptism, the Eucharistic gifts, holy water, and oil, cleansing sin, granting life, healing, and consolation. Stories from the saints and ordinary life illustrate the gravity of denying Orthodox doctrine and the hypocrisy of professing faith while acting without fear of God.

We have been together on the previous evenings. You will remember that we touched on certain subjects that could help a person, in some measure, to be attentive to his faith and to his Christian life in general. We spoke, if you remember, about prayer. We spoke about fasting—these are fundamental matters. We dwelt on sin and on how sin is to be put right. We explained the necessity of the Church and the clergy. Thank you.
We spoke especially about making use of the Mystery of repentance and confession. We spoke about the need to attend church and to receive Holy Communion frequently. We spoke about the Precious Cross; in passing, we also spoke about almsgiving. We spoke about forgiveness and bearing no resentment. All these matters that we have discussed together here for about ten days are necessary; every person needs them. We are forgetful and inattentive, and we imagine that Christianity is some kind of theory—that one lights a candle, and that is all. Yet Christianity is life!
Indeed, I dare say it is a demanding life, a laborious life—a life of attentiveness and fervor—if a person truly wishes to be benefited, because, as we have said, he passes through this world only once. He will have no further opportunity to pass through it again and put right whatever he failed to attend to and set in order while he was here. Tonight, as you know, is also our last evening together. It is not that there are no other subjects one might discuss for people’s benefit, but tonight I wanted to approach you in a different way, so that I might give you a kind of compass, as I said, to help you pay attention to certain other things in the Church.
The prayers of the Church, for example, have real content. They guide us and remind us; and if a person were willing not merely to recite them, but to pay attention to them and put them into practice, he would be benefited completely. There are many prayers and troparia in our Church, containing dogmatic, moral, and evangelical teaching. But there are three fundamental prayers whose words almost all of us know: the Nicene Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and “O Heavenly King.” The Nicene Creed contains the whole of the faith’s doctrine.
The Lord’s Prayer also teaches a person how he ought to think and whether he truly has a Father in Heaven. With our lips we say that we have a Father in Heaven. But if He were to call down from above and ask, “How am I your Father?” we would be left speechless, because we would not even know how to answer. Then there is a third fundamental prayer: “O Heavenly King, Comforter,” and so forth. If I were to take up the Nicene Creed, I would need to give at least twelve talks in order to interpret its twelve articles. I believe in one God; I believe in one Jesus Christ; I believe in the Holy Spirit, in Baptism, in the Ever-Virgin, in the Resurrection, and in so many other things. At least twelve talks would be needed. So it is impossible for us to take that up now.
If I were to say even a few words about the Lord’s Prayer, I would need to give at least four talks in succession: to interpret it, to explain what Christ intended to teach and what Christ does teach, and what we ourselves ought to understand when we say the Lord’s Prayer. We do not have that time either. So tonight I would like to dwell on the third one, the shortest prayer, which says, “O Heavenly King, Comforter,” and so forth. Properly speaking, this too would require two talks. But we shall shorten it and offer merely a sense of it, a little taste, so that we may pay attention to the words we hear in the Church and strive to bring our lives into conformity with what we say. They must not remain mere words;
they must also become deeds. So this is another talk connected with the talks we have already given, but it approaches the matter in a different way. We might say that its approach is both dogmatic and moral. You know, before a person begins to pray, he must offer a prayer before the prayer. Unless he prays first, he cannot pray properly. A person cannot pray by himself; he needs someone to stand beside him and help him. If you study the Scriptures, you will have found in the eighth chapter of Romans that Paul says it is the Holy Spirit who intercedes for us. He stands beside us at the moment when we...
pray. We say a few words, and He is the One who takes our prayer and carries it to God—in His own words, with His own voice, and in His own way—and speaks to God on our behalf. This is what it means that He intercedes for us. A person who does not have the grace of the Holy Spirit as his helper cannot pray. However hard he may try, his words rise no higher than the chandelier; they do not pass beyond the ceiling.
He must, without fail, have the grace of the Holy Spirit with him. I do not know whether you have noticed that this short prayer, “O Heavenly King, Comforter,” and so forth, is placed at the beginning of almost every service. As soon as the priest says, “Blessed is our God,” and so forth, and, “In the name of the Father and of the Son,” we say, “O Heavenly King, Comforter.” In other words: Come! Come!
We are about to pray, and if we do not have You with us, how can we pray? What can we say? Moreover, most people do not know that this is a prayer addressed not simply to God in general, nor to Christ, but specifically to the Holy Spirit. Everything said in it refers to the Holy Spirit. It is a prayer to the third Person of the Holy Trinity, the Holy Spirit. A person must therefore know that when I say, “O Heavenly King, Comforter,” I am speaking to the Holy Spirit. I am not speaking to Christ or to God the Father, as I do in the Lord’s Prayer: “Our Father, who art in Heaven.” Besides the dogmatic teaching a person must know, this prayer also contains moral teaching. For if someone is unsound in doctrine...
there is no salvation. It is no small matter to say that Christ is not God. It is no small matter to say that the Holy Spirit is not God. You cannot say without condemning yourself to Hell that the Most Holy Theotokos is not Ever-Virgin, that there is no Resurrection, or that there is no life beyond the grave. To deny these things amounts to Hell. Now, if you make a mistake, tell a lie, shout, become angry, and so forth, all these things may be dealt with through pastoral economy; but doctrine admits of no such economy. A person must therefore be careful about what he says concerning the matters the Church has defined dogmatically—matters over which much blood has been shed and Synods have been held—because without the true faith there is no salvation. Secondly, I do not know whether you have read the Life of Saint Paisios the Great. If you have, you will find the following story there.
Once, one of his monks went down to the city to sell some handiwork. As he was walking along the road, a Jew approached him and began speaking to him, saying that Christ is not God, but was merely the son of a virgin. The monk did not know very much about the Gospel, and in order to escape the discussion, he finally said, “Very well, perhaps it is so,” simply to get rid of the Jew, who had been pressing him to admit that Christ is not God. He went down, sold his handiwork, and returned to the monastery that evening. It is customary, when a monk returns...
for him to go and make a prostration before the abbot, to tell him that he has returned, and to report whether he encountered any temptation or difficulty. But the abbot had given an order: “He is not to come in. I will not receive him.” Someone there told the monk, “He will not receive you; that is what he told us.” The monk realized that if the abbot would not receive him, he must have done something wrong. He began examining himself to discover what he had done, but his search revealed nothing. He sat outside and wept. The others felt sorry for him and interceded with the Saint: “Receive him and at least tell him what he has done wrong, so that he may fulfill his canon, his rule of prayer, if he repents.” The Saint relented and allowed him to enter. As soon as he came in, the Saint said to him, “So, perhaps it is so—is that it?”
The monk understood nothing. He remembered nothing and had attached no importance to what he had said. “I do not understand you.” “So, perhaps it is so—is that it?” Still nothing. The Saint said, “When you were going down this morning and the Jew told you that Christ is not God, what did you say to get rid of him? ‘Perhaps it is so,’ did you not?” His mouth had lost its grace—the Holy Spirit—and this was regarded as a denial of the faith. The Saint anointed him again with holy chrism, read the blessing of water, sprinkled him, and only then received him back into the brotherhood. The doctrine established by the Fathers in council and by the Church is a very serious matter. We are obliged to know it, and to know it correctly.
So, “O Heavenly King, Comforter.” We are not addressing some child, some young woman, some learned man, or anyone of that sort. We call Him King, so He must be God. He is the Heavenly King—“O Heavenly King”—not an earthly king. We are not addressing some mortal ruler here. We address the Heavenly King, who is in Heaven; and in Heaven are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Consequently, He is God. The King in Heaven is God; earthly kings do not go to Heaven as kings. And the One whom we address is the Holy Spirit, the third Person. There is “Holy God,” the Father; “Holy Mighty,” the Son, through whom all things were made; and “Holy Immortal”...
the Holy Spirit, who preserves and sustains all things. It is the Holy Spirit who gives life to the world, life to nature, and life to the waters. In general, it is the Holy Spirit who gives life. Although there are three Persons, there is one Godhead. That is why, although we say three times, “Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us,” we do not say, “have mercy on us” in the plural, as though addressing three gods. We use the singular: “have mercy on us.” One Trinity, one power, one essence, invoked three times. So, “O Heavenly King, Comforter.” What does Comforter mean? The One who consoles us. If the Holy Spirit were not present, who would cleanse us from our sins? It is the Holy Spirit who cleanses sins.
It is the Holy Spirit who sanctifies the water in which we are baptized and cleansed from our transgressions, if we are baptized as adults, and from ancestral sin. It is the Holy Spirit who sanctifies the bread and wine, which are given for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. It is the Holy Spirit who sanctifies the water in the blessing of water, so that the demons flee; we take it home and drive Satan out. It is the Holy Spirit who sanctifies the oil in Holy Unction and heals us from illnesses. It is the Holy Spirit who comforts us. And I want you to know that He is the second Comforter. The first Comforter is Christ, who is God. There are two Comforters. It is not only the Holy Spirit: first there is Christ, and then the Holy Spirit. Christ said, “I will send you another Comforter. It is to your advantage that I go away, because I will send you another Comforter, who will abide with you forever.”
Some people who read but do not pay close attention ask where Christ is called the Comforter. John says it in his epistle: “My little children, I ask you not to sin. But if anyone should sin, for one reason or another, we have a Comforter with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” Read the First Catholic Epistle of John, and you will find there that Christ is the Comforter, because Christ puts our sins right and redeems us. We incur the debt, and He pays it. And John says that He does this not only for our sins, but also for the sins of the whole world. So yes, there are two Comforters. When we say, “O Heavenly King, Comforter,” we are speaking to the second Comforter. The first Comforter is Christ.
“O Heavenly King, Comforter, the Spirit of Truth.” This means there is also a spirit of wickedness, a spirit of falsehood, and a spirit of deceit. But this is the Spirit of Truth. There is no room for falsehood here. Satan is that other spirit, the spirit of wickedness; he is not the Spirit of Truth. The spirit of wickedness twists and reverses everything the Holy Spirit teaches. It is like the hymn that says, “A chief captain of the angels was sent from Heaven,” making clear that this is not the rebel, Satan, Beelzebub, who deceived Eve. And it says, “sent from Heaven,” distinguishing him from the other one, who was of the earth.
The same distinction is made here: “the Spirit of Truth,” not of falsehood and not of wickedness. “Who art everywhere present and fillest all things.” Everywhere present and filling all things. If the Holy Spirit were not God, He could not be everywhere present. Omnipresence is a property belonging only to the Godhead in three hypostases. Only the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are everywhere present. Neither the Most Holy Theotokos, nor the angels, nor the Saints are everywhere present. They exist within a particular place and time. At any given moment, each one is here and not there.
They are not there; and whenever they are there, they are not here. Only the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are everywhere present. Therefore, since the Holy Spirit is everywhere present, He is God. He is not the breath of God, nor merely the divine uncreated energy of God, as the deceitful Jehovah’s Witnesses tell us. He is God. If He were not God and were not everywhere present, there would be life wherever He was present, and no life wherever He was absent. We would see nature, human beings, animals, and plants lying dead for lack of the Holy Spirit. What do we call the Holy Spirit? Holy Immortal. What does that mean? He makes immortal, He gives life, He preserves life. Immortal. That is what this prayer teaches us.
Do not let what I have said trouble you—that the others, the angels, the Saints, and even the Theotokos, are not everywhere present. Do not be scandalized or let questions arise within you. You may ask: if our Most Holy Theotokos, Saint Nicholas, or Saint George is not everywhere present, how can so many people call upon them at the same time and receive an answer? People run to a feast and cry, “My Most Holy Theotokos!” She hears them all, and miracles take place everywhere. How can this be? This question was answered long ago. Indeed, Athanasius the Great addressed it when he was asked: “If the Theotokos does not possess these attributes, how can one person call upon her here, another there, and another somewhere else, all at the same moment? How can she be in every place?” “She is not,” he replies.
She is in one place. Elsewhere, an angel is sent and acts on behalf of the Most Holy Theotokos; farther on, on behalf of Saint Nicholas; and elsewhere, on behalf of Saint Athanasius. An angel is sent by Christ to stand in for the Saint and perform the miracle, if there is need. The Most Holy Theotokos does not perform the miracle by herself; Christ performs it through the Most Holy Theotokos. Saint Spyridon does not perform it by himself; Christ performs it through Saint Spyridon. Saint Nektarios of Aegina does not perform it by himself; Christ performs it through Saint Nektarios of Aegina. Unless Christ gives His approval, nothing happens. We say this in the troparia, but we do not pay attention. We are careless—to say no more. Take Saint Spyridon’s troparion, for example. What does it say? How does it begin? “You were revealed as a champion of the First Council.”
“And a wonderworker, O God-bearing Spyridon, our Father. Therefore you spoke to one dead in the grave and changed a serpent into gold; and while you chanted your holy prayers, you had angels serving with you, O most sacred one.” That is the story. And it continues: “Glory to Him who glorified you; glory to Him who crowned you.” Who is that? Christ. “Glory to Him who works healings for all through you.” We say it, but do we understand it? The omnipresence of the Holy Spirit therefore reminds us and teaches us that He is God, because omnipresence is an attribute of the Godhead in three hypostases alone. All the Saints and angels are confined to place and time. It is in this way, through God’s action, that they can be present wherever they are needed. Now, besides this doctrinal point,
we can also form a correct understanding of the Comforter, the Holy Spirit: He is God. If we who pray paid attention to the words of this prayer, we would not do many evil things. For when it says, “Who are everywhere present and fill all things,” it immediately puts the fear of God into a person. No matter how much I hide, no matter how I try to conceal myself or escape the eyes of others, I cannot. I act before God. He sees me; I am naked and laid bare before Him. How do I think? What do I say? What am I about to do? Where have I hidden? What have I escaped? Everything lies bare before Him.
If a person truly sensed that God sees him—that there is an eye above watching him—he would not sin. In the old churches, above the iconostasis, they used to paint three things: an eye, an ear, and a pen. It was as though they were reminding people that Someone always sees everything, always hears everything, and always records everything. That Someone is God. Even today, in many churches there is a single eye painted above: the all-seeing eye, which beholds everything. If, then, a person reflected that, at the very moment
he is sinning or is about to sin, God sees him and the Holy Spirit sees him, perhaps he would not sin. For, as you know, we take every precaution to make sure that no human eyes see us, that no one hears us, and that no one notices what we are doing. And many times we succeed.
We hide from our husband while keeping a lover; we hide from our wife while keeping a mistress. We steal and make sure the police, the tax authorities, and the prosecutor do not catch us. We slander others, apply pressure, and do I know not what, and then we feel secure. Yet there is another side to it all: these things are recorded, and...
If a person paid attention to what he says in this short prayer—“Who are everywhere present and fill all things”—he would restrain himself, be watchful, and not do such things.
You do not sin in front of other people; you sin in secret, imagining that no one sees you. You do not care, because you have no fear of God. You do not fear God, revere God, or take God into account, and so you sin before God. These are two very different things. John Chrysostom says that if a person perceived God around him every day and at every moment, either he would not sin at all or he would sin very little. He would not sin as shamelessly as people do today. There is also a story—I do not know whether you have ever read Saint Ephrem the Syrian. It is said that Saint Ephrem, that great Saint of the desert, once went down to Alexandria. There, a courtesan, a corrupt woman, a prostitute...
thought she could entice into sin this man who was held in such high esteem. And she tried. During the days the elder was there, she kept close to him and continually pursued him. Every day she looked for an opportunity to allure him and lead him astray. He immediately understood the woman’s intentions. Then one evening, in the marketplace, he turned to her with a smile and said, “I understand what you want, and forgive me for making you follow me for two days, but I have not had the opportunity. If you wish, let us meet somewhere here tomorrow at ten o’clock, for example, and I will agree to what you want.” She was delighted. She made certain to remember the appointment, convinced that she had him in her grasp.
She would soon see what would happen. They did indeed meet, and from the marketplace they began walking to find a suitable place. When they reached the central square of Alexandria, the elder walked over to a public bench, took off his cassock, threw it down, and said to her, “Come here.” “Aren’t you ashamed?” she replied. “People can see us. I am ashamed.” “Are you not ashamed? You are afraid that people will see you; I am afraid that God will see me.” That was enough to help her understand that there is Someone else who sees us. If you have the boldness to sin before God, then sin before the whole world as well. Yet you hide from the world.
You treat God with utter contempt. Yet you pray, “O Heavenly King, everywhere present...” Pay attention now. Do you understand where all this is leading? In connection with precisely what I am telling you, a serious incident took place in Athens some years ago. A woman deeply in love finally managed, after a long time, to enter into Holy Matrimony with the man she loved. She had truly sacrificed much because she loved him. After the wedding had finally taken place and they had moved into their own apartment, they invited a mutual friend who had known about their relationship from earlier days.
As a newly married couple, they gave him the first dinner held in their new home. The woman then thought it fitting to arrange a secret meeting with this friend—and she did. On the day of the appointment, she told her husband, “If you come home from work this afternoon and I am not here, do not worry. I will have gone to the dentist.” Her tooth was hurting, you see. Who could imagine that after ten years of waiting, a woman would invite someone to the first dinner in her married home and then take him as a lover? Who could imagine such a thing? In any case, that afternoon she made herself ready at the last moment.
She tidied herself up, looked at herself in the mirror from the front and the back, put on perfume, picked up her handbag, and prepared to leave. She passed through the entrance hall on her way out. High on the wall there was an icon corner, and she had placed the wedding crowns up there as well, so they would not become soiled.
She was not even entitled to those crowns, because the couple had already trampled over everything beforehand. The crowns are for virgins: for a virgin man and a virgin woman. “Crown them with glory and honor.” If they have acted dishonorably, what meaning does “crown them” have? Well, in any case, she had placed them high up. As she went to leave, the case holding the wedding crowns fell to the floor and shattered into a million pieces. And...
so did all the icons she had around it, including the icon of our Most Holy Theotokos.
The woman was terrified when everything crashed down behind her with a tremendous noise, and she cried, “My Most Holy Theotokos!” Then she heard a voice from above saying, “Are you not ashamed to take my name upon your lips while going where you intend to go? And you hung the wedding crowns up there as well, though you have no need of them.” Her voice failed her; everything within her stopped. If a person possessed this fear, reverence, and awareness—that whatever he does, he does before God; that the Holy Spirit sees into every crevice, every darkness, every ravine, every basement, and absolutely everything—he would not do certain things. He would not do them. And yet we do.
A Jewish woman once said something to one of our own women; allow me to tell you this as well. A well-to-do woman went to a clinic to commit her fifth killing—to kill her fifth child. There were no beds available. The doctor told her, “It is not possible today. I will tell you when to come back.” “I cannot come another time. It must be now. My husband is away now, and this is my opportunity.” “What can we do? We have no bed where we can keep you tonight.” Someone then said, “Doctor, room number such-and-such has two beds. We could ask the woman there to let this patient stay tonight, and tomorrow a bed may become available so we can settle her there.” “I will speak to the woman.”
She was lying in the room. That woman had given birth to her fifth child, while the other had killed her fifth child. They asked her, “Please, something unexpected has happened—a hemorrhage and so forth. Would you allow us to use this bed, if no relative of yours is coming?” “Of course, gladly,” she said. “No one is coming tonight, so she may use it.” A little later they brought the other woman in. She was still under anesthesia. After an hour or two, she came around and saw another woman beside her with a baby. They brought the baby to her to nurse. I do not know what caught her attention or what she heard, but she realized that the woman was not from our people. In the morning, when she had fully recovered and understood that the woman was a foreigner, she quietly asked the nurse, “What is she?”
The nurse told her, “She is Jewish.” “That is what I thought,” the woman said. “She is Jewish.” Even so, our woman considered it her duty to catechize the Jewish woman and tell her that her faith was not the true faith and that she ought to follow the true one. Christ was a Jew, but the Jews rejected Him. She therefore had to understand this and become a Christian. The Jewish woman listened for quite some time as our woman catechized her, and at last she asked very politely, “Have you finished?” The other woman smiled and said, “Yes, I have.” “Please forgive me for upsetting you, but I could never want a faith whose followers have so little fear of God.”
“I could never want a religion so cruel that a mother kills the child of her own womb.” Our woman was stunned—utterly stunned. The Jewish woman continued: “If God is truly God, does He not see what you are doing here? How could I embrace a religion that does not have the power to restrain you from committing such crimes?” Who stands condemned here? Do you understand where all this leads? We have no fear of God. We do not see God. We see only other people and concern ourselves with how to keep these things hidden from them. Once that is arranged, we think we are safe. Woe to us on the day of judgment unless we repent of all this in dust and ashes, as Holy Scripture says—unless we repent, confess, and bear fruits worthy of metanoia (repentance).
That is what John said to the Pharisees and scribes of his day. “Everywhere present and filling all things.” If a person truly sensed that God is everywhere present, he would also feel secure. He would not be afraid. He would not be afraid, because if I remain within the realm of grace, I will be guarded and helped. God will send angels, provided that I have a living relationship with the grace of the Holy Spirit. He will send angels to help me. “The angel of the Lord will encamp around those who fear Him.” But we do not see this. A person does not even see his own angel, nor does he realize that he has had an angel from the day of his Baptism.
He does not pray, and because he does not pray, he has never noticed in the service of Compline the prayer to the angel who guards his soul. If we possessed this fear of God, would we not remember that, while we are sinning, our angel is beside us and sees us? If I sin by myself, if I steal or commit forgery, if I do this or that—or if two people are involved in sins of the flesh—two angels are watching our unlawful deeds. Would we be in the wretched state we are in today? We have blotted God out, shut Him away, and often confined Him—we laypeople—to the sanctuary. At most, we permit God to come as far as the bishop’s throne and the chandelier. Beyond that, He is not to be discussed.
As though God were not there, as though He were confined somewhere. Yet He is everywhere present and fills all things. Have you ever said that beautiful prayer to your Guardian Angel? Do you remember how it goes? “Holy Angel, who stand beside my wretched soul and my afflicted life, do not forsake me, a sinner, nor depart from me because of my lack of self-control,” and so it continues with such beautiful words. A person then feels secure, knowing that he is under God’s grace, within God’s protection, and surrounded by God’s soldiers. What a great thing it is to be human! He has angels who guard him and angels who minister to him: “Ministering spirits sent forth to serve those who are to inherit salvation.” The human person is something wondrous. Yet because we have no fear of God...
...we do the things we do, persist in them, add sin upon sin, fail to cleanse what is already within us, and fail to struggle not to fall—or, when we do fall, to rise again. Such necessary reflections can arise when a person pays attention to the words he is saying. But if, out of habit, he merely recites a string or heap of words with no meaning for him, never allowing them to pass over his own life, examine him, and make him attentive, they bear no fruit. “Everywhere present and filling all things; Treasury of good things.” What does a person usually regard as good things? Material possessions. We have bread, oil, wine, money, meat, bodily pleasures, and friendship. That is what we call good.
Yet these are not the true good things. They are the goods of the flesh, and they will pass away with the flesh. Here the prayer speaks of the good things of the spirit: “the Treasury of good things.” It includes even those material goods that sustain this cage so the bird may live within it, that preserve the shell so the egg may remain inside. But above all it means the spiritual good things that flow from the Holy Spirit. And at the very summit, the greatest good is Holy Communion, the Body and Blood of Christ. If people only knew—or followed in the service book—the words used by the priest while we sing outside the sanctuary, “We praise You.”
The priest has said, “Your own, from Your own,” and we outside the sanctuary sing, “We praise You.” It is a deeply moving moment, and even the most indifferent people are affected by it to some degree. Then, within the sanctuary and with profound awe, the priest says to God the Father—for the offering is made to God the Father, while the Son is sacrificed and offered for the salvation of mankind—“Send down, O Lord, Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these Gifts here presented,” the bread and the wine. Your Holy Spirit. Why? “And make this bread the precious Body of Your Christ.” Amen. “And that which is in this Cup the precious Blood of Your Christ.” Amen. “Changing them by Your Holy Spirit.” Amen, amen, amen.
“So that, for those who partake of them, they may be unto nepsis, the watchfulness of the soul, unto the forgiveness of sins, unto...” and the prayer continues. According to Basil the Great, through Holy Communion a person receives twenty-three good things, twenty-three virtues, twenty-three gifts. The greatest good among all these treasures is, above all, the Body and Blood of Christ. It is offered only to us Orthodox from Orthodox altars, and it is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. I, for example, cannot bring this about, nor can you do it simply by invoking the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit hears the celebrant who possesses Holy Orders, and then the elements are united with grace, the change takes place, and the miracle occurs.
The Holy Spirit, then, is the Treasury of good things. Knowledge, learning, science—all such good things also come from the Holy Spirit. Read the Wisdom of Sirach and the Wisdom of Solomon. You will find that such knowledge comes from God. Is someone an excellent physician? God illumined him; the Holy Spirit made him so. “The Lord created medicines from the earth, and a sensible man will not reject them.” We hear that a great inventor has discovered a treatment for cancer, and so forth. The Holy Spirit illumined him. “The Lord created medicines from the earth, and a sensible man will not reject them.” We must not take the credit ourselves and say that we accomplished these things. No. All these are fruits of the Holy Spirit. Beyond this, the Holy Spirit possesses other treasures, which Paul mentions in Galatians. Please open in your homes...
...Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians, chapter five, verse twenty-two and following, and you will see remarkable things there: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, goodness, kindness, gentleness, and self-control.” It is the fruit of the Spirit. The Spirit is like a tree bearing all these fruits. Where do we go looking for them? We are told to have love—but where shall we find it? Where is love sold? We are told to be at peace—but where shall we find peace? Peace comes from the Holy Spirit, the peace “which surpasses every nous,” every spiritual intellect. We need self-control over the tongue and the flesh. Where does it come from? It is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, then, is the Treasury of good things. But if the Holy Spirit is to abide in a person and produce what are called the fruits of the Spirit, that person must be watchful and refrain from sin.
Sin drives the Holy Spirit away. Grace cannot be commanded. Grace is a queen; the Holy Spirit is King. He does not remain by force or obey our orders. You must cultivate purity, be watchful, and seek the Holy Spirit so that He may cleanse you and dwell within you again. The Holy Spirit Himself cleanses a person so that He may abide upon him. Therefore, if we do not rightly understand the words we say or what follows from the thing we ask for, we will neither truly ask for it nor understand it. The Treasury of good things is the grace of the Holy Spirit; it is the Holy Spirit Himself, the third Person of the Holy Trinity, the Treasury of good things and Giver of life.
The Giver of life. Bear in mind that when a priest blesses water, the water remains fresh; it does not begin to smell or spoil.
You know this; at least, I think you ought to know it. At home I have a seventy-five-year-old bottle of the blessing of water, and it is crystal clear. Just two or three years ago, Mr. Kokoris demolished his father-in-law’s house, which was a hundred and twenty or a hundred and thirty years old. In its corners—as he himself can testify—those devout parents of old had placed little bottles of blessed water. They had not slaughtered roosters and placed their blood there. When the house was excavated with bulldozers, he opened one of those bottles and drank it. It was a hundred and twenty years old. This is the work and divine uncreated energy of the Holy Spirit within the Orthodox Church, and nowhere else. Let all the cardinals of the Western church gather together and bless water; the water will begin to stink.
If you want to understand this, however harsh I may sound, when you find yourself in a papal church—if you come to Athens, for example, go behind the University. There is a Roman Catholic church named after Saint Dionysius the Areopagite. As soon as you enter, on your left there is a shell-shaped basin containing what they call blessed water, with which they sprinkle themselves as they come in. Take a little of this so-called blessed water of theirs and put it in a bottle. Provided they have not salted it to preserve it—make sure they have not added salt—it will begin to smell within a few days. From this you will understand that there is no grace in their church. Protestants can do the same, as can Freemasons, Jews, Quakers, and whatever other religious groups wish to do it. Nowhere else do these wondrous things occur—only in the Orthodox Church. And I told you the day before yesterday to test this for yourselves.
Take a flower from the Cross used on the Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross. Put a little water and flour in a bowl, knead them together, place the flower on top, and leave the bowl somewhere warm—not in the refrigerator. By the afternoon you will see it rise and become sourdough. Work it again, and it will overflow the bowl. Use it to bake prosphora, take them to the Church, and keep some of that leaven for your future offerings. Try it if you wish. Did you not receive some of the dried flower? The priest gave me a little, and I have kept it here between the pages. If I take it and put it in the mixture, this will happen. Let the whole world gather and try. Some say it happens because of the basil plant, claiming that it is a natural property of basil. Let it be clover, a violet, or a nettle. It is enough that it came from the Cross of the Lord, which the priest carried upon his head and brought out as a blessing for the people.
Do we need to go to Capernaum, my beloved? We do not need to travel two thousand years into the past to witness a miracle of Christ. He works miracles today within the Orthodox Church through the Holy Spirit. And this Comforter, He says, will remain with us always, until the end of the age. From this we understand that our faith is the true faith. For us, our faith has now become knowledge. If you ask me, “Panagopoulos, do you believe?” I will tell you, “I do not believe.” “Then are you an unbeliever?” Why do I not merely believe? Because I know. I have passed beyond belief into knowledge. I know; I hold God in my hands and see Him at work every day. The Holy Spirit, then, is the Giver of life. A little child comes spiritually dead, with the devil within him because of the Fall and ancestral sin. The Church receives him and gives him life through the Holy Spirit, commanding all the demons to depart from within...
...the water, from the oil, and from his heart. Have you ever listened to the catechesis and the prayers of Baptism? Have you ever had the opportunity? The priest wages war to drive the devil out from within the child, and he casts him out through the grace of the Holy Spirit. “The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit. The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit does all these things and preserves them. But because of his sins, a person may live outside this experience, this grace, and this power, for grace does not remain where there is filth. Flies seek filth as a place to settle. The grace of the Holy Spirit seeks purity. In proportion to the purity we preserve in our souls, we possess the spiritual fragrance of the grace of the Holy Spirit, and we see and understand things differently.
We interpret life differently. We need the Holy Spirit always to remain beside us and speak to us. You know of the meeting between Saint Ephrem and Basil the Great. Once Saint Ephrem had heard of Basil the Great and went to the Church to meet him. He entered and sat in a corner, a humble little monk. From within the sanctuary, Saint Basil sent the deacon, saying, “Go and tell that monk over there to come into the sanctuary.” The deacon went to him and said, “The bishop told you to come inside.” “Me?” he replied. “He did not send you to me. You have made a mistake. Go back. He does not know me—who am I?” Saint Basil summoned him again: “Go and ask him, ‘Is your name not Ephrem?’ Tell him to come inside.” So Ephrem entered. Later, when Saint Basil came out to speak...
...Saint Ephrem, being pure, saw a dove upon Basil the Great’s shoulder, speaking into his ear. It continued speaking to him. Later, when the two saints met and Basil the Great prayed that Ephrem might be granted the Greek language—for Ephrem spoke Syriac—Ephrem was filled with wonder and said, “Now I understand that the little dove which stood there and spoke to you while you preached was responsible for everything. It revealed to you that my name was Ephrem, and it enabled us to speak the same language,” and so forth. This little bird is the one through whom these things were done. Do you know why the Holy Spirit was symbolized by a dove? Because of the dove’s purity and innocence. When a dove loses its mate, it does not mate with another. It remains pure. That is why the Lord says, “Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”
He used this bird to symbolize the grace and purity of the Holy Spirit. And He showed respect for this bird—a point for those who tell us to throw the icons out of our homes, claiming that such things are not permitted. When our Christ went into the Temple and overturned the tables of those who were trading there, when He came to those who had doves in cages, He told them, “Take these things away and go.” Read the second chapter of John. In those doves, those birds, He showed respect for the image of the Holy Spirit. There is nothing in our faith that is not as it should be. The grace of the Holy Spirit is the Treasury of blessings and the Giver of life. Once we acknowledge all this about Him, we say, “Come and dwell within us.” Not, “Come and pay us a visit,” but, “Come and dwell within us”—come and remain.
Pitch Your tent beside us, so that You may illumine us and come to our aid in time. “Come and dwell within us, and cleanse us from every stain”—not only from the obvious, serious stains, but from every stain. Think of a bride whose train is held by forty people as she walks in white, even though some brides would not be worthy to wear even black. In any case, the white garment is a symbol of chastity and virginity. If it had a large black mark and was filthy, we would say, “Where is she going like that? Where are they taking this bride in such a dirty dress?” But even if, let us suppose, there were no such mark, only a few small spots here and there, should she not still have that wedding dress cleaned? In precisely the same way, Christ desires that a person
should have neither spot nor wrinkle. We imagine that only grave sins can drag a person down. But if you load your boat with sand, it will still sink. You do not have to load it with boulders. Load it with sand, and it will sink just the same. We must pay attention to the smallest details. “From every stain.” And we must ask the grace of the Holy Spirit to bring to our remembrance even the details of our life, so that all these things may be removed and the garment may be cleansed and made perfectly white. For woe to those who can only say, “And I have no garment in which to enter.” That is the matter. Why do you have no garment?
The garment is given to us freely. Why does a person refuse to have it washed clean? “The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from every sin.” Why does he refuse? Because he does not struggle, because he does not practice metanoia—repentance—because he does not stop sinning and thus allow grace to visit him, cleanse what remains, and bring the rest to his remembrance. By himself, a person can do nothing. He can care for his body and preserve some outward freshness, washing it with various cleansers and using colognes and creams to maintain its outward appearance. But inwardly, this work is done by the grace of the Holy Spirit. It is not done with partiality, as though God showed favoritism toward one person simply because He happened to prefer him. No. The person himself must establish the conditions of humility and purity, and
the Holy Spirit will overshadow him, cleanse him, guide him, and bring things to his remembrance. All these things are accomplished by the grace of the Spirit of God. This is why we pray and say, “Come and dwell within us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Good One.” Apart from the workings of the grace of the Holy Spirit, beloved, there is no salvation. I do not know what we may have said or understood until today. But now that we have heard these few things, I would like us to adopt a different attitude and put them into practice in our own lives, so that they may bear good fruit.
For, as I told you, time does not permit me to speak about other prayers. So tonight, as a final prayer and a word of farewell, I have shown you the meaning of these few words concerning the Holy Spirit. I pray that He may remain over us—not only over us, but over the whole world—and cleanse us, so that the blood of Christ, which was shed for the whole world and for us, may not have been shed in vain.

θέλει να μην έχει ούτε σπίλον ούτε ρυτίδα. Γιατί εμείς νομίζουμε ότι τα μεγάλα αμαρτήματα είναι εκείνα που μπορούν τον άνθρωπο να τον πάνε κάτω. Και με άμμο να το φορτώσεις το καΐκι σου, βυθίζεται. Δεν είναι ανάγκη να το φορτώσεις με ογκόλιθους. Και με άμμο να το φορτώσεις, βυθίζεται. Πρέπει να προσέχουμε τας λεπτομερείας. «Από πάσης κηλίδος» και να παρακαλούμε τη χάρη του Πνεύματος του Αγίου να μας υπενθυμίζει λεπτομέρειες από τη ζωή μας, να φύγουν όλα αυτά από τη μέση, να καθαριστεί και να είναι ολόλευκο, διότι αλλοίμονο από τους ανθρώπους που μόνο λένε: «Και ένδυμα ουκ έχω, ίνα εισέλθω εν αυτώ». Αυτό. Γιατί δεν έχεις ένδυμα;
