Summary

The lecture situates the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist within the Church’s celebrations following the Ascension, Pentecost, and the feast of the Apostles. The delayed answer teaches believers to entrust their petitions to God, whose timing serves their spiritual good even when natural possibilities appear exhausted. Zechariah’s doubt illustrates the limits of purely human reasoning, while John’s miraculous conception demonstrates that God can suspend the ordinary course of nature.

You will remember that, when we resumed our talks, we began, in a way, with the feasts then at hand. We spoke about the Ascension, about Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit, and about All Saints. And now we find ourselves in this period of preparation for the feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, which falls on Monday, followed, as we said, by the Synaxis of the Twelve Apostles. Yesterday, however, the Church once again set before us a great event: the Nativity of the Honorable Forerunner. Indeed, she observed it as a day of joy for precisely this reason.

The Church celebrated the Nativity of the Honorable Forerunner as a joyful event, and for that reason she even permitted fish during the fast. He is one of those persons whose coming was foretold. He has a prehistory, we might say, just as our Christ does, just as the Most Holy Theotokos does, and just as the Precious Cross and the Holy Spirit do. So does the Honorable Forerunner. The Prophet Isaiah had seen him eight hundred years before Christ,

preaching and saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness.” The Prophet Malachi also speaks about John the Forerunner, his mission, and his work: “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face.” He calls him an angel—not because he was an angel by nature, but because he was a messenger who would bring the good news that the Son of God would become the Son of the Virgin and would be born shortly after him. At one point the Honorable Forerunner says, “He who comes after me has come before me.” This proclaims the divinity of Jesus. The One who, according to His humanity, would be six months younger was nevertheless greater than John. For He is not only the Son of Mary, but also the Son of God; and as the Son of God, He exists eternally, as God does. John is a great person who goes largely unnoticed. We celebrate him, of course, but we do not imitate him, just as we do not imitate the other Saints.

We do not even imitate our own patron saints, whose names we bear. In any case, as an act of honor and for our blessing, this evening I would like to set before you the account of the birth of the Honorable Forerunner. Only the Apostle and Evangelist Luke writes about it. As you yourselves may read, in his first chapter he gives detailed information about John’s conception, his family, and the events surrounding his conception.

In the first chapter of Luke, from verse 5 onward, we read: “There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zechariah.” Luke places him within history. When was this? During the reign of King Herod. He also tells us that John’s father was a priest; the Honorable Forerunner was, as we might say, a priest’s son. “Of the division of Abijah; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.”

In a few words, Luke tells us where they came from, gives us their names, and tells us the father’s calling. They were righteous, “both before God.” The couple—both Zechariah and Elizabeth—were righteous. To be righteous under the Old Covenant was no small thing. For if we, under the New Covenant and with grace, cannot be righteous, how much more difficult was it for those who did not have grace in the same way? How much strength and effort they must have needed! Today electricity makes our work easy; but without electricity, working with coal or wood, what would we do? Something similar applies to the age of grace and the age before grace. For a person to be righteous is a great thing, and here Luke says that both of them were righteous—not merely in the sight of other people.

We regard everyone as bound for Paradise—especially those with whom we sin, feast, make merry, and join in devouring other people. We give them all a certificate, a certificate of admission to Paradise. But the question is not whether you or I issue such certificates and say, “He is a man with a heart of gold,” or, “He is a spiritual man,” or, “Ah, no one can compare with him.” That means nothing. The real question...

is whether you are righteous before God. God has a different scale. He does not weigh as we weigh. He does not see as we see, nor does He act as we act. A person will be utterly astonished when he comes to judgment.

Then he will see how God acts and how God judges. God has His own measure, and He measures in His own way; He has His own scales, and He weighs in His own way. You remember the account we often mention of Belshazzar, who was drinking wine before a thousand of his concubines and thinking, “Who can challenge me?” Then the hand appeared and said to him, “You have been measured and found wanting; you have been weighed and found wanting. Tonight your kingdom is taken from you.” This very thing happens to many of us. But when Scripture says here that they were “righteous before God,” it means they were upright people who had truly succeeded in life: “Walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.” In all the commandments. We do many things, but leave one undone.

We may do some things, but leave twelve undone. We do not do everything. I do not know whether there are people who do everything God commands. We may reach a certain number, but we do not make the whole account right. That is why we receive no answers, either to our petitions or in our affairs generally. You may say, “But do I not have these virtues?” Yet Scripture also says, “Do not let your eye become evil.”

It says, “For every idle word I will bring you into judgment.” Have you ever counted your words? Why has God placed your tongue inside your teeth? So that you may bite it and keep it from speaking when it should not. Which one of us has lived even one day rightly? The Church prays, “For a perfect, holy, peaceful, and sinless day,” and through the chanter we all cry together, “Grant this, O Lord.” Yet our words are false. I am not even resolved to live one such day, and throughout our lives we have not lived even one day rightly. How can this be? Here, then, Scripture says, “in all the commandments”—in all of them. Are there ten commandments? Then all ten. Are there twenty? Then all twenty. Are there a hundred? Then all one hundred. It is not enough for me to keep only some of them...

We must not be carried away by the thought, “I am better than someone who does nothing.” That is delusion. The person who does nothing will remain outside, and I, who fail to keep everything rightly, will also remain outside. I gain nothing by taking the wicked as my example and comparing myself with them. What comes of it? Does it make me superior? A one-eyed man may boast among the blind, saying, “I can see because I have one eye.” But among those with two sound eyes, what is the one-eyed man? The very opposite. Here, then, Luke tells us—and through Luke, the grace of the Holy Spirit tells us; these are not merely human words—that both these people were blameless: “Blameless in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.” Blameless. That is what they truly were: blameless.

A person must be blameless; that is, Satan must have no claim over him, no share or stake in him. Satan must own no part of him. Blameless. We say, for example, “What is she? My maiden daughter.” But, my child, where does this title come from, and why is she called a maiden rather than simply a daughter? Because the word presupposes what a maiden is. In Greek, the same word also means the pupil of the eye. Just as the pupil of the eye cannot tolerate anything entering it and accepts no compromise, so a maiden is presumed truly to be a maiden. But we speak falsely.

Scripture says, then, that they were blameless—untouched and above reproach. In any event, after saying all this about the family, Luke tells us, “But they had no child.” Was it because they avoided having children? No. “Because Elizabeth was barren.” Elizabeth’s womb was closed; it was not that they avoided having children. Today we have voluntary sterilization. Her barrenness was involuntary, not chosen. We call ourselves Christians and carry candles

at the Resurrection service; we hold celebrations, yet we do not have children. Are we Christians? We are not Christians, however much we may try to justify it or patch it over with lies of our own. We are not Christians, and before God we stand guilty. God does not receive people who have merely patched things over. God wants people who have raised their hands and surrendered to Him. He knows what burden I can carry. A mother knows what to place in little Nicholas’s hands, what to give little Helen, and what to give little Demetrios to carry when they return from the market. She gives to each according to the child’s strength: a very small thing to the youngest, a little more to another, and still more to another. She knows how much each can bear. Does God not know how much you and I can carry? Why are you unwilling to remain dependent on God?

Do you not want to bring into the world human persons whose existence does not end at the grave? Everything else ends; everything will fade and be destroyed, except souls. Souls do not cease to exist. Do you not rejoice, then, to store up souls and invest in souls? Consider what Solomon says. Have you ever read his Proverbs? “He who saves souls is wise.” Not the one who stores up wealth or makes investments, but the one who saves souls. Such a person is called wise and truly is wise, when he first saves his own soul and then helps another soul—if that person is willing to come to his senses and enter the way of God. This man is wise, because souls do not cease to exist.

Whatever else a person may accomplish will remain here. It will be lost and fade away. The soul does not cease to exist. Yet the human person does not want this partnership with God. He secretly takes the blessing given in Holy Matrimony and draws out everything connected with marital pleasure, yet refuses to do the work for which the blessing was given. Pleasure is the gratuity attached to the begetting of children, just as the pleasure of taste is the gratuity attached to food, which nourishes and sustains the body. Did God make a mistake? If we had no sense of taste, most people would die by the roadside because they would not eat. They eat because they enjoy taste, and thus the body is sustained. God has made all things in wisdom.

In the same way, bodily pleasure is a gratuity attached to the begetting of children. We take the gratuity without doing any of the work. And so, you understand, we have altered the command “Be fruitful and multiply” to mean, “You shall pursue pleasure,” and we have cast aside the words “Be fruitful.”

In the first chapter of the Apocalypse, God says that He “opens, and no one shuts, and shuts, and no one opens.” No doctor, however desperately he may struggle, can succeed if God does not grant it. And many times we see people who have fallen down in supplication before God, the Most Holy Theotokos, Saint Anna, or other Saints who possess particular gifts of grace, and their childlessness has been ended, even after many years. I am one of them. After seventeen years without children, Saint Nektarios of Aegina miraculously gave us a child, even though the child was in grave danger because of placenta previa, so that the miracle would be shown to be twofold. Do you understand? What does placenta previa mean? Death for both. The child suffocates in the blood, and the mother dies from hemorrhaging. What can one say?

Yet do you know what is happening among us today? More than three hundred thousand children are killed every year here in our own Greece—more than three hundred thousand children—apart from those who do not even reach Herod’s knife, the doctor’s knife.

In any case, the result was this: these people had already reached the age when such things were behind them. Elizabeth had ceased to have her monthly cycle, and Zechariah was now an elderly man. The possibility of having children had, as we would say, come to an end for them. For the passage goes on to say:

“They were both advanced in years.” They were elderly by then. Indeed, Elizabeth was about a hundred years old, and the elder Zechariah was in his nineties. “And it came to pass, while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his division,” that his turn came, as we were saying, and he went to the Temple in due course. “According to the custom of the priesthood, his lot was to burn incense when he entered the temple of the Lord.” That is, he entered the sanctuary, as we would say, to offer incense. “And the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense.” While he was offering incense inside the sanctuary, the people were praying outside. “Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.”

He was inside, somewhere near what we today might picture as the Holy Altar. An angel stood somewhere to the right of it, and Zechariah saw him. You know, whether we see a good spirit or an evil one, it is natural for us to be shaken. The one troubles us for evil, the other for good; but either way, they are spirits.

“And when Zechariah saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your supplication has been heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.’” You see, from the very beginning we even have...

the child’s name.

She would give birth to a male child. Until the time of birth, it was difficult for a woman to know whether she would bear a boy or a girl. Yet here, in those days and without scientific knowledge, it was revealed through the Holy Spirit that she would bear a son and that his name would be John. Of course, she would also have a safe delivery, as we were saying, because for the child to live to be circumcised and named, both health and a good birth would be necessary—a blessed delivery, as we say. The passage then tells us what this child would bring him: “And you will have joy and gladness,” it says, “and many will rejoice at his birth.” Why would they rejoice? Simply because one more child had been born? No. They would rejoice because the Forerunner was being born. And in what capacity?

He heralds beforehand the coming of Christ. When we see the morning star, what do we think? That soon the day will come and the sun will rise. When we see the Most Holy Theotokos entering the Temple on the feast of her Entry, what does the Church say? “Christ is born; glorify Him!” He has not yet been born, but her entry means that the time for Christ’s birth has drawn near. That is why the passage says there will be rejoicing. Joy is spread everywhere because of this extraordinary birth. But I would like to return briefly to an earlier point. “Your supplication has been heard,” it says, “and your wife Elizabeth will bear a son.” What prayer? When did Zechariah pray for God to give him a child? Surely it was when the laws of nature still allowed for conception and childbirth.

Could a couple now eighty, ninety, or a hundred years old really be praying for a child? I think that would seem quite absurd. And yet the angel says, “Your supplication has been heard.” Which supplication? The one you offered long ago. Did you not once pray? Did you not ask God for a child? “Yes, of course I asked Him—but not now.” When did you ask Him? When my wife was still young and still had her monthly cycle, and I too was younger, and so forth—perhaps when we were forty or fifty years old. Once the woman’s cycle had ended, as I said earlier, the time for such things was past. That chapter had closed. According to the laws of nature, there was no longer any possibility of children. Yet with God matters are very different. And so the angel says that your supplication was heard—meaning, the prayer you offered then.

You prayed, and your supplication was formally received and inscribed in the books of God. “But back then?” Yes, you prayed back then, and now the hour has come for that prayer to be fulfilled. Here is a great lesson that escapes us, and Satan often uses this to drive us to despair. He tells us that our prayer is not being heard. Someone says, “I am far too sinful. God does not hear me. I have been praying for so many years.” Yet here God had heard, but He answered fifty years later. So at this point, besides what we will say afterward, I want us to learn once and for all to leave our petitions in the hands of God.

Let Him act at the time when He knows what is spiritually beneficial for each person. Let us not tell God how He should act. Many times, we ask for things at the wrong time, and we ask for things that are not for our good. God desires what is truly beneficial for every human being—not merely materially, physically, or according to this world, but spiritually. When we say, “God wills it; this was God’s will,” we mean that this is for my true good, because the will of God is what benefits the human person. It was beneficial for Zechariah that God did not give him a child fifty years earlier, but gave him one after fifty years. You may ask why.

From a human point of view, it would have seemed better to give them the child when they were younger, so that they could care for him, avoid hardship, and remain at his side. They too would have had a little plaything, as we might say, because many people want a child merely to pass the time. They treat the child like an ornament and behave accordingly. Had God given them a child then, He would simply have given them a child. But instead, He disciplines them for fifty years and does not give them merely a child—He gives them the child. The child. There is a difference between a child and the child, just as there is a difference between a virgin and the Virgin.

The definite article is what gives the matter its full weight. Fifty years earlier, since the fullness of time had not yet come, the child given to them could not have been John the Forerunner. It could have been some other child, but not the Forerunner. So what wrong did God do to Zechariah? Should Zechariah have become resentful toward God, or withdrawn embittered, with his head bowed, thinking that he was under God’s curse? For you know what childlessness meant in those days: a womb that did not bear was considered cursed. A womb that does not bear was regarded as cursed in the eyes of God, because it was made, as I said earlier, not for pleasure but for bearing children—the blessing of bearing children. It brings forth saints, scientists, inventors, and benefactors.

It brings forth human persons destined for eternity. That little chamber called the womb is a great blessing from God. And Zechariah, being such a man and one who feared God, surely wondered whether some sin rested upon him, whether something was afflicting him or drawing near to him. Do you understand? That is why I would like us, at this point, to place our trust in God. God knows what He is doing, and He knows when to give; He does not give when He should not. When a child throws himself on the floor, crying and asking his mother for scissors, does she give them to him? When he screams and asks for a knife, does she give it to him? When he asks her for a box of matches, does she give it to him? Why does she refuse? Does she not love the child? No, please understand.

She says, “I love him, and that is precisely why I do not give it to him. He may put out his eyes, cut his hands, or start a fire that will burn him and all of us. That is why I do not give it.” Many things we ask for are not merely fire; they are real explosives. God must not give them to us, and He does not. Some people struggle desperately to get the sickbed and the sick person out of their home, and so forth. Why must the bed be removed? So that musicians can come in for dancing and a celebration can be held? Better the sickbed. It is preferable to have that there than to let Satan enter the house. God knows more than we do. God does not make it easier for anyone to sin; rather, He helps the person return to Him. In any case, the angel said that there would be joy because of this child’s coming: “For he will be great in the sight of the Lord.”

“He shall never drink wine or strong drink,” it says. This man will drink nothing intoxicating. “And he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.” There are others as well who bore the Spirit from their mother’s womb. Someone may ask: how is this fullness of the Holy Spirit demonstrated? And in John’s case, how would it be shown? You know what happened when the Most Holy Theotokos went up into the hill country: she “went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, and entered the house of Elizabeth and greeted her,” and so forth. What happened there then? What happened there!

Elizabeth said, “How is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” A woman of ninety or a hundred years calls a young girl of thirteen or fourteen the mother of her Lord. “How is this granted to me,” she says, “that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” And the Most Holy Theotokos might ask, “How did you know this?” “When you greeted and embraced me, the child leapt in my womb and filled my heart with gladness.” Who leapt, and why? Why did John spring and rejoice within her? He greeted his Lord, who was outside the womb. He greeted his Lord from within.

This was through the Holy Spirit. The Most Holy Theotokos, when she embraced Elizabeth, communicated the Holy Spirit to her; then John, from within the womb, greeted Christ outside it. How did he do so? Merely as a little child? No, but as a child inspired by God. That is why the Akathist Hymn beautifully says, “with leaps as with songs.” He could not speak, so he made several leaps and movements within the womb; in this way he greeted the Lord outside and His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos. A dog cannot thank us in words; it jumps, bounds about, runs here and there, and shows its joy toward its master or mistress through such gestures. Something similar happened here. Thus, it says, John was filled with the Holy Spirit while still within his mother’s womb.

“And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.” Through his preaching of metanoia—repentance—he helped all the people return to God and then directed them toward Christ. He proclaimed that the One coming after him would baptize them with the Holy Spirit and fire: “I baptize you with water, but the One who comes after me...” And this is indeed what happened. To this day, our Holy Church has this twofold Baptism: in water and in the Spirit. It is not only the baptism with water that John performed in the Jordan, but also Baptism in the Spirit. After Baptism comes the proclamation, “The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit.” “And he himself will go before Him.”

“In the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to prepare a people made ready for the Lord.” He would possess such grace and such a spirit, to the highest degree, as the Prophet Elijah had possessed. For here there is a connection with the Prophet Elijah, who lived about a thousand years earlier—a thousand years before Christ, as we know. John would be like him, a man clothed in hair. Indeed, John the Forerunner was such a man. Zechariah now hears all this and begins arranging the matter according to human reason and the laws of nature.

And Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this?”

“Can you assure me that what you are telling me will happen? Will my wife conceive?” Why do you doubt, Zechariah? “I doubt because ‘I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.’ I am an old man. Am I now to experience the joys and pleasures of married life? And my wife is old, an elderly woman by now.” That is how human beings speak, but God does not speak that way. Never stumble over the laws of nature. Whatever those laws may indicate, they do not apply here. A miracle suspends the force of the inexorable laws of nature.

Keep this in mind. This is the definition: a miracle suspends the force of the inexorable laws of nature. Let me give you an example. Years ago, when the great flood occurred here and the whole lower district of Bournazi was inundated, causing enormous destruction, do you know where the cloud gathered its load before coming and emptying it here? Over Zakynthos. That is what the meteorologists tell us. They could trace it, because they had followed it as it traveled a great distance without releasing its rain anywhere, until it came and poured it all out here.

At other times there have been other incidents. Take an earthquake, for example. According to all the available data and reports from abroad, an earthquake of the same force should have left us with thousands dead. Yet in Corinth we did not lose so much as a cat. This is what we mean by the suspension of the inexorable laws of nature. “Where God wills, the order of nature is overcome.” Do not look for a natural explanation, and do not make nature into a god. Above nature stands the One who created it and who tells it, “Stop,” or, “Begin.” “He who looks upon the earth and makes it tremble, who touches the mountains and they smoke.” These are not empty words. The same applies here. Zechariah viewed the matter in purely natural terms.

In human terms—purely human terms. “How can this happen?” he asks. “What sign will you show me? I am already advanced in years. The laws of nature are not on my side; I do not possess the conditions necessary for what you are telling me. What is this strange thing you are saying?” The answer came: “And the angel answered him, ‘I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God.’” The Archangel, he tells him, who beholds God face to face. “And I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.” I am carrying out a command. I have not come to tell you anything of my own. This is the command I received, sir, and this is what I proclaim to you. But cast aside such reasoning. You are seeing everything in merely human terms.

Is that how you ought to view these things, especially when you are a priest? As a priest, you should have known that other such things had already taken place. Abraham had a child. How did Sarah, an old woman, come to bear that child? How did it happen? Rebekah had a child; Rachel had a child. How did these things happen? You should have known all this. But because you failed to take heed, you will be chastened. “Behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day these things come to pass.” You will not speak again, he tells him, until this child is born and all that I have now told you has happened. And indeed, he was left unable to hear or speak, for deafness and muteness went together. “Because you did not believe my words.” You were called to believe, not to know. Yet you ask me for knowledge.

“My words will be fulfilled in their proper time.” Nine months are required, and in nine months what I am telling you will come to pass. The period of gestation and birth follows its appointed course, among human beings as among animals. And so, when that time has passed, these words I have spoken to you will truly be fulfilled.

He is not asked to renounce his wife, nor another person, nor his work. He is asked to deny himself. But although a person may renounce everything else, he will not renounce himself. He has a very high opinion of himself; he knows much, wants much, and so on. Every day he mints and circulates the same coins: “I think, I imagine, I...” What does this mean? Faith sees around the bend. It sees ahead, and it also sees behind. Once, people were asked which eyes see rightly and which see best. Many offered different opinions. One man with spiritual insight said, “Wicked eyes see best.”

Wicked eyes can see what is happening in Australia right now: “It must have reached there by now; I see deaths,” and then they go about repeating such things. Listen to me: that person claims to see what is happening far away. On the other hand, there are the eyes of faith. Wicked eyes see everything evil, while faithful eyes see what is good and leads to salvation. An educated unbeliever sees one way; an educated believer sees another, as does an uneducated person who nevertheless has faith. The believer has different eyes, special spectacles that God gives to a person. Christ is like an optician: He polishes the lenses and gives each person the prescription he needs. But man does not want Christ.

He goes instead to the devil, that eye doctor, who puts his own spectacles on him and makes him see everything differently. The devil never allows him to put on the spectacles that would lead him to seek wisdom and discover where he came from, why he came, and where he is going. He never allows him to examine these questions. Satan never gives him those spectacles. Christ alone has them. And when a person sees that he came from nothing and is destined for eternity—alas, his knees begin to buckle. I was abroad once, and someone told me that a university there had posed a prize question: “What is man’s purpose in the world?” He said the prize had been awarded. Apparently three students had come close: a Greek, an African, and a Polish student.

The prize was given to the African student for the answer: “Man’s purpose is to walk toward death.” They regarded this as the finest and wisest answer anyone could give, and so they awarded him the prize. I shook my head. “Why?” the man asked me. “Because that is not man’s purpose. It may help him toward his purpose, but it is not the purpose itself.” “Then what,” he asked, “is man’s purpose in the world?” Theosis—divinisation. Man’s purpose is theosis. It is not merely to become a good person, or a scientist, or to explore the stars, or to become a dry and rigid moralist. None of these things.

If a person does not attain theosis, if he does not succeed in becoming god by grace, then he has failed, whatever else he may be. Participation in divinity is man’s true calling. And for what purpose does the Church of Christ carry out her work through the clergy and the Mysteries? Otherwise, why has she been doing this for nearly two thousand years? Christ came for the man who fell among thieves, took him to the inn, and entrusted him to the innkeeper so that his healing might be completed. The goal is theosis. You say, “Try to become good people.” All merely good people are in Hell; there is not one in Paradise. Strive to become Christians. This does not mean that a Christian is not a good person. But a good person may not be a Christian at all. He may display perfect courtesy and every kind of philanthropy while having no relationship whatsoever with Christ. And then he comes...

He comes face to face with a beautiful saying of John Chrysostom: “A pure life is of no benefit when one’s doctrines are corrupt.” Keep this in mind: neither honor, nor honesty, nor virginity, nor nepsis—watchfulness—nor anything else can save by itself. You may tell me that in your doctrine there is no salvation. Salvation exists because Christ exists. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from every sin. Through Jesus Christ we enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Through Jesus Christ we become children of God and can say, “Our Father.” Yet we do not receive Christ as He offers Himself; we receive Him as we wish Him to be. And today, people claim to receive Christ...

...in nearly two thousand different ways. I was abroad and spoke with a doctor. I told him, “It is only natural that you have undergone such distortion, since you live amid four hundred Protestant heresies alone.” “Two thousand, if you please,” he replied. According to the statistics, the religions in America have now risen to two thousand. You understand, then, where we are and where people stand. Everyone is supposedly good, everyone is supposedly bound for Paradise, and if only we could all be like them, and so on and so forth. Yet we shall not see Paradise even from afar. Moses, when he sinned and God cut short his days, was told, “You will die; you will not enter the Promised Land.” I do not know whether you are aware that Moses did not enter the Promised Land.

He committed a sin. God told Moses to go up the mountain and look upon the Promised Land from afar. “But you,” He said, “will not enter it.” And Moses died there. Joshua led the people in and established them in the land. My point, then, is that it is not enough merely to act; you must also believe, just as it is not enough merely to believe; you must also act. Right faith and right practice are what lead to the Kingdom of Heaven. No one is more accomplished than Satan when it comes to belief. Satan is the first to believe, but he does not act accordingly. In the same way, many behave properly and keep the rules, but do not believe. Others possess both: right faith and right practice. That is the point.

These steer the ship safely toward the Kingdom of Heaven. For the angel tells him, “You did not believe.” He was a preacher, yet he relied on human reasoning. When you see what is taking place here, you must understand that this is a vision. You must understand that this is from God. God is speaking. Does God make mistakes, that you should instruct Him? Moses did the same thing, do you remember? It happened when God was sending him to Pharaoh to lead the people out.

Moses raised his own objection: “I cannot do it,” he said. “I am slow of speech.” But why dwell on being slow of speech? God turns to him and says, “Tell Me, who gave you your tongue? Was it not I? Was it your mother who gave it to you? Did I not give you your tongue? Do I not know that you are slow of speech? You will go in My power.” “Put your hand inside your garment.” He does so. “Now take it out.” He takes it out and sees it covered with leprosy. “Put it back,” God tells him. He puts it back and, at a single command, draws it out clean, like marble. “You will go and do these things by My power—My power. Go,” He says, “and do not be afraid.” But we insist on judging everything by human reason. This professor said one thing, that doctor said another, and the lawyer something else. We have no measure; we listen to ten different opinions. Bend your knee in prayer, and you will overturn all of them. They may lose their learning, their eloquence, everything they rely on—and, God willing, learn to believe. For these matters are resolved through prayer. Prayer is the one way, the one key that opens every lock, even those secured with two bolts. And prayer also transforms the person who prays, because we often believe only under the pressure of necessity.

Once we receive what we asked for, we forget. You often meet people who made a vow and received what they sought, but never fulfilled their vow. While they were making it, God, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Saint were mighty. Once they received the blessing, they said, in effect, “Let him wait.” You are deceived. “Make your vows and fulfill them to the Lord our God.” Make your vow in your weakness, but then fulfill it. Guard your faith, lest Satan deceive you by whispering, “No, it was only a coincidence.” No. If you believed, it was not a coincidence. It was what you believed it to be. I have often used the example of a doctor. The doctor holds one opinion, but as soon as you pray, his mind turns in another direction and he discovers the cause.

I told you earlier that seventeen years ago God gave us a child, and both mother and child would have been lost if Saint Nektarios of Aegina had not changed the doctor’s mind. Do you know what happened? The final objection had been overcome. She was confined to bed, and he told her, “Mrs. Panagopoulou, we will meet at the clinic. I shall wait for your telephone call.” Then, twenty minutes later, he returned uninvited, deeply troubled and lost in thought. “There is something I want to tell you,” he said. “A possibility has occurred to me: because there is bleeding when the cycle changes, and so forth...”

“I suspect that we may have placenta previa.”

“What does that mean, doctor?” I asked him. “Shall I speak plainly and truthfully?” he said. “At a moment like this, that is exactly how you must speak.” “The child will die, and the mother has only a five-percent chance of surviving.” “Why did you not tell us this, so that we could go to the clinic?” “I do not know,” he said. “Then how did it occur to you now?” “It simply came to me now.” “And how could this happen? When could it happen?” “When labor begins,” he said. “And when might labor begin?” “At this very moment.” “Thank you. I will not tell her anything.” Do you understand what might happen if labor begins now? Why should she not already be at the clinic, so that we can perform the operation calmly and confidently and deliver the child?

“Let us transfer her now.” It was afternoon. He said, “There is no anesthesiologist here now.” “So,” I said, “are we going to be left hanging in agony until tomorrow morning?” “There is no other way,” he told me. And you can understand what a nightmarish night we endured until the following morning. They carried her in, the operation was performed, and everything was exactly as he had said. Who was it that changed his mind? Was it I? Was it his own cleverness? Clearly, then, it was Someone above—the one whom I saw that night, Saint Nektarios of Aegina. What, then, is the mature way to approach such things? This is not something demonic, but human nature needs more than knowledge. I do not reject knowledge, because if you were to ask me now whether I believe, you might rise and say to me, “You are an unbeliever, Mr. Panagiotis; you do not...”

“Do you believe? What are you doing?” Let me tell you: I have touched God in my life, and I see Him every day, at every step, so that my faith has now been transformed into knowledge. It is as though I were holding Him in my hands. What Paul says in the eleventh chapter of Hebrews applies to me: faith is “the evidence of things not seen.” But if you do not see it, how can it be evidence? And yet, although you do not see, it is still evidence. So the angel rebukes Zechariah, because, given his sacred office, he should have had this experience and asked, “What is the will of God?” You must not resist. Did our Most Holy Theotokos resist?

She too said almost the same words: “How shall this be, since I do not know a man?” But the Most Holy Theotokos had no precedent for such a thing—for a virgin to give birth. Zechariah did have a precedent for a barren woman conceiving by her husband; but for a woman to give birth without a man—that was a difficult matter indeed. Yet the angel praises her and does not punish her, even though she did much the same thing. Did not our Most Holy Theotokos do this with the Archangel Gabriel? What did she do? She pressed him hard: “And how will this happen?” and “How will that happen?” and so on and so forth—how would all this be accomplished? Yet he did not punish her; he punished Zechariah. And indeed, as the account goes on to say, Zechariah remained silent. So, when he returned to the people, the people...

The people became anxious because he had been inside for so long. Then they saw that he could no longer speak and that his countenance had changed. They realized that he had encountered an angel, and they marveled. “When he came out, he could not speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple. He kept making signs to them and remained mute.” By gestures, he tried to tell them that he had seen something, and so on, but he remained unable to speak. Then, just as the angel had said, Elizabeth conceived and gave birth. On the eighth day after the child’s birth, they came to name him. They asked, “What name shall we give him?” And Elizabeth said, “His name shall be John.”

They searched among their relatives. “We have no one in the family named John,” they said. “Let us ask the elder as well.” So they gave him a tablet to write on. He wrote, and at that very moment he spoke: “His name is John.” He is John. Are we the ones who will give him his name? God gives him the name, and are we then going to change it? It is like some people who say, “When I have a child, I will name her Mary,” and then they call her Panagiota because the mother-in-law interfered, or someone else interfered—or they name her Mary-Panagiota. No. John is his name. It is not a matter of what the mother-in-law, the daughter-in-law, the son-in-law, the old man, or anyone else says. This is God’s doing. The resurrectional hymns come first; the things of God come first. Have we not made many things go badly by acting otherwise? “John,” he says, “is his name.” And as a result, his mouth was opened, and he brought forth that most beautiful...

When they came to compose John’s troparion, they borrowed a few words from Proverbs: “The memory of the righteous is honored with praises.” What more can we say? Is not the Lord’s own testimony about the Forerunner enough, when He said that no woman has given birth to anyone greater than John the Forerunner? What, then, did Zechariah lose? God took His time preparing the gift for him, because the gift was so great: He gave him the Forerunner. “Wait fifty years or so, and I will give you a son whom all generations will call blessed.” Yes, this is the lesson that comes to us from yesterday. And I pray that the Saint may shelter all our families and our Church. Amen.

στην Ανάσταση, κάνουμε γιορτές, παιδιά δεν κάνουμε. Είμεθα χριστιανοί; Δεν είμεθα χριστιανοί, όσο να θέλουμε εμείς να τα δικαιολογούμε και όσο να θέλουμε εμείς να τα μπαλώνουμε με ψέματα δικά μας. Χριστιανοί δεν είμεθα. Και ενώπιον του Θεού είμεθα ένοχοι. Ο Θεός μπαλωμένους δεν παίρνει μέσα. Ο Θεός θέλει ανθρώπους οι οποίοι σηκώσανε τα χέρια πάνω, παρεδόθησαν. Και ξέρει Αυτός τι φορτίο σηκώνω εγώ. Πώς η μάνα ξέρει τι θα δώσει στο Νικάκι, τι θα δώσει στην Ελενίτσα, τι θα δώσει στο Δημητράκι στο χέρι να κρατούνε όταν γυρίζουν από την αγορά. Κατά αναλογία. Στο μικρό θα του δώσει ένα μικράκι, στο άλλο θα δώσει λίγο περισσότερο, στο άλλο λίγο περισσότερο. Ξέρει πόσο. Ο Θεός δεν ξέρει πόσο σηκώνεις εσύ και εγώ; Γιατί δεν θέλεις να μείνεις στην εξάρτηση του Θεού;

Αποκάλυψη, στο πρώτο κεφάλαιο, όταν ο Θεός λέει «ἀνοίγει, καὶ οὐδεὶς κλείει, καὶ κλείει, καὶ οὐδεὶς ἀνοίγει». Όχι γιατρός να χτυπιέται κάτω, ο οποίος θέλει να χτυπιέται κάτω, άμα ο Θεός δεν δώσει. Και βλέπουμε πολλές φορές ανθρώπους οι οποίοι προσέπεσαν στον Θεό, στην Παναγία, στην Αγία Άννα, σε άλλους Αγίους που έχουν ειδικά χαρίσματα, τους ελύθη η ατεκνία μάλιστα έπειτα από πολλά χρόνια. Ένας εξ αυτών είμαι κι εγώ. Έπειτα από 17 χρόνια ατεκνίας, ο Άγιος Νεκτάριος μας έδωσε παιδί θαυματουργικά και πιασμένο απ’ έξω από τη μύτη, με προδρομικό πλακούντα, για να φαίνεται διπλό το θαύμα. Καταλαβαίνετε; Ε, τι θα πει προδρομικός πλακούς; Θάνατος και των δύο. Το παιδί πνίγεται απ’ τα αίματα και η μητέρα αποθνήσκει απ’ την αιμορραγία. Τι θα πει;

Θα γεννήσει και αρσενικό. Δύσκολο πράγμα μέχρι την ώρα να ξέρει η γυναίκα τι θα γεννήσει, άρσεν ή θήλυ. Όμως εδώ, από τότε, χωρίς επιστήμη, διά Πνεύματος Αγίου, λέγει ότι θα γεννήσει αρσενικό και θα μπει το όνομά του Ιωάννης. Βέβαια θα γεννήσει και καλά, όπως τα λέγαμε, γιατί, για να φτάσει στο σημείο να δεχτεί περιτομή και να μπει και το όνομα, θα χρειαζόταν υγεία και καλή γέννα, όπως τα λέγαμε, η ώρα η καλή. Τώρα εδώ, στη συνέχεια, αναφέρει το τι θα φέρει αυτό το παιδί κοντά του. «Χαρὰ καὶ ἀγαλλίασις ἔσται σοι», λέγει. «Καὶ πολλοὶ ἐπὶ τῇ γεννήσει αὐτοῦ χαρήσονται». Γιατί θα χαρούν; Γιατί γεννήθηκε ένα παιδί ακόμη; Δεν είναι αυτός ο λόγος, αλλά ότι γεννιέται ο Πρόδρομος. Ως ποιος;

«Πώς ερμηνεύεται», του λέω, «αυτό, γιατρέ;» «Να μιλήσω», λέει, «με τη γλώσσα της αληθείας;» «Σε τούτο έτσι πρέπει να μιλείς αυτή την ώρα». «Θάνατος του παιδιού και 5% να σωθεί η μητέρα». «Γιατί δεν μας το είπατε αυτό το πράγμα, να μεταφερθούμε στην κλινική;» «Δεν ξέρω», λέει, «πώς». «Και πώς σου ήρθε τώρα;» «Τώρα». «Και πώς μπορεί να γίνει; Πότε μπορεί να γίνει αυτό;» «Όταν αρχίσουν», λέει, «οι προϋποθέσεις του τοκετού». «Και πότε μπορεί να αρχίσουν οι προϋποθέσεις του τοκετού;» «Και αυτή τη στιγμή». «Σε ευχαριστώ, δεν της λέω τίποτα». Καταλαβαίνετε τι θα γίνει ενδεχομένως, αν αρχίσουν τώρα οι προϋποθέσεις του τοκετού; Γιατί να μην βρίσκεται και γιατί να μην την κάνουμε με ψυχρότητα την επέμβαση και θαρρετά να το πάρουμε το παιδί;

πιστεύετε; Τι κάνετε εσείς;» Θα σας το γνωρίζω. Διότι έχω ψηλαφήσει τον Θεό στη ζωή μου και τον βλέπω καθημερινώς σε κάθε βήμα, που πλέον έχει μεταποιηθεί η πίστη μου σε γνώση. Είναι σαν να τον κρατώ. Εφαρμόζεται σε μένα εκείνο το οποίο λέγει ο Παύλος στο ενδέκατο προς Εβραίους, ότι η πίστη είναι «πραγμάτων ἔλεγχος οὐ βλεπομένων». Μα αφού δεν το βλέπεις, πώς ο έλεγχος; Και εντούτοις, παρότι δεν βλέπεις, εντούτοις έλεγχος. Και κατηγορεί λοιπόν αυτόν, διότι έπρεπε, λόγω της ιδιότητός του, έπρεπε να έχει την εμπειρία αυτή και να πει: «Ποιο είναι το θέλημα του Θεού;» Να μην αντισταθείς. Αντιστάθηκε η Παναγία μας;
