Summary
Great Lent is presented as a season of mourning in which the Church calls believers to seek the Lord of Hosts sincerely and continually. The disaster exposed the fragility of wealth and human confidence, yet also inspired reconciliation, confession, Holy Communion, and renewed awareness of dependence on God. Authentic Lenten fasting must be both bodily and spiritual, joining restraint of food with forgiveness, almsgiving, control of the senses, and the breaking of every bond of injustice.

We have now entered the season of Great Lent. Everything has changed, in a certain sense. Our Church has led us more deeply into this season and reminds us that it is a time of mourning. It is very sad when we do not study what the Church teaches. If you attend church, you will have noticed that all her texts have changed.
In this regard, we spoke and said: “O Lord of Hosts, be with us.”
“For we have no other helper in times of tribulation but You. O Lord of Hosts, have mercy on us.” And I ask: especially in these days, when we are living under this threat, how much more vividly should the face of the Lord stand before us, and how earnestly should we seek and implore Him? Have we taken care to have some real connection with what we are saying? Have we been faithful, at least, to this prayer? We believe that He is the Lord of Hosts; we ask Him to be with us and remain with us. But in these days of need, does man take any of this seriously?
We must understand this. Why should He remain with us? Why do we say, “Be with us”? What is it that keeps Him from being near us, so that we must implore Him to remain close and draw near to us? What is the barrier, the curtain, the veil that comes between us and Him whom we beseech to draw near? It is sin. Sin is what separates man from God and drives man away from God. God always desires to be with man and to help him. We should not say, “O Lord of Hosts, be with us,” only now. We should say it always: at night, in the morning, on the road, at work, in bed, and
at the table. At all times, man should ask God to remain near him. For when man does not have God near him, he has instead the one who is causing all this turmoil at this very hour.
Man is sick; he is under the influence of the evil one, under the influence of the evil one. Why this is so, God knows; I do not. Satan truly exists as a person. He is the one who continually whispers to man about easy pleasures, the desires of the flesh, and the things of this world, and so becomes the cause of man’s separation from God. And I am not speaking about people who know nothing of these things. I am speaking about us who consider ourselves religious, light a candle, and keep an icon at home. Do we do what is necessary for God to remain with us? He desires to remain with us; He loves us. And you see what measures He takes. At times He even brings down His beloved rod, for that rod is blessed—the rod of correction
above all in these present days. But do we take this to heart and do what is needed for Christ to come among us again—to come into our home, our work, our life, and our family? Sadly, we pay very little attention to this.
We have grown accustomed to everything. This steamroller of habit somehow erases it all and prevents us from being as greatly benefited as we could be by these holy days, and especially by this combination of events. For the situation is mournful in two ways. It is mournful on the part of the Church,
and it should also be mournful on the part of society, for the commandment is: “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.” One person cannot be living under a tent—the elder trembling, the pregnant woman trembling, the little child trembling, and so forth—while I dance, blaspheme, and carry on with my life. That cannot be right. God desires people to place themselves at one another’s service. Indeed, most of us should not have offered even the prayer we just said: “O Lord of Hosts, be with us.” Why? Because we lied. We did not create even the slightest condition for God to draw near to us again. We drove God away through the way we live. Our life is completely opposed to Him. Heaven will no longer tolerate such mockery. A report came from the Holy Mountain, from that place where they see matters somewhat more clearly. Do you know what
that spiritual observer of these days reported to us? He saw Greece covered by a veil. A protection sheltered Greece, and it was surely our Most Holy Theotokos, the Holy Protection, which has always sheltered Orthodoxy and the Greek people. If you wish, read the life of Saint Andrew the Fool for Christ. If you wish, read the accounts of the Holy Protection commemorated on the first of October, and you will see what the Most Holy Theotokos has been for us and that she remains so to this day. Then, at one moment, the Lord appeared and said: “Step aside. Take away this veil. I can bear it no longer. Lift this veil.”
I break off here. It was cut short, cut off halfway, so that Christ might delay and show longsuffering. And it is said that our Most Holy Theotokos called out
to Saint Demetrios, Saint Achillios, Saint Spyridon, Saint Kosmas the Aetolian, and Saint Nektarios, telling them to hasten to our aid. And do you know what the result was? How many dead should there have been? A million. Instead, there were five or ten. I will speak of nowhere else, only Corinth. Corinth suffered ninety-percent destruction, yet not one person died. These are extraordinary things; they defy human reason. But when journalists went there and questioned the people, they asked one simple woman how she had faced the earthquake and what she thought of it. “The Most Holy Theotokos protected us,” she said. The journalist did not write that. He wrote what someone else said, but he did not write that the Most Holy Theotokos had protected them.
Everything collapsed. Yet everyone managed to get out alive, even from places where not so much as a mouse could have escaped after the buildings fell. The journalist did not write that; he wrote about something else. I do not know whether you have heard this account from me before, but since I have raised the subject, it must become known. For this work of our Christ, this love of God, is being attributed elsewhere. Have you heard anyone mention God at all? No one speaks about God. Everyone speaks only in terms of science; they have pushed God aside. At 8:04 in the evening on the twenty-fourth—hear this from me—a taxi driver was traveling from Perachora to Athens. He lived here in Athens, but he had a relative there, his mother, I believe, and had gone to visit her. As he passed through Loutraki, beyond the Karantani stop,
near the road that turns right toward Mechaniko, a woman dressed in black stopped him in the middle of the road. She was neither elderly nor young. “Please take me to Corinth; it is urgent.” “I cannot take you,” he said, “because I am going to Athens.” “It is urgent. I will pay you.” “I cannot take you. The only thing I can do is take you to the junction where the Athens–Corinth road passes, and from there you can find another way.” She agreed, entered the taxi, and they continued. Before they reached the turn, however, she persuaded him, as an act of love, to take her all the way. It would add only fifteen minutes: five or six kilometers beyond the Isthmus, and then he could turn back toward Athens. When they reached the railway barriers at Corinth station, she asked him to stop.
The meter showed less than it should have for the journey beyond the Isthmus; it read sixty drachmas. She took out the money to pay him and asked him also to take out the bag she had placed in the back. But she had not been carrying any bag. He was astonished. “Gerontissa,” he said—for he took her to be a nun, not our Most Holy Theotokos—“I do not want any money, but you did not put a bag in the back. You had nothing; your hands were empty.” “No, please,” she said, “I have a bag in the back,” and she continued to insist. He became angry. “I will get it myself.” He stepped out, opened the trunk, and found a black bag inside, divided into three sections. One section contained soil, another blood, and the third bones. “That is right,” she told him. “I have come to protect Corinth, because tonight it will be destroyed by an earthquake.” He was beside himself. The woman vanished, the bag vanished, and everything else vanished as well.
He remained there for a long time. Then he turned back, thinking that he should telephone his family so they could take precautions, but he was ashamed. “How can anyone speak about such things? They will think I have gone mad.” With these thoughts he reached his home. He could no longer keep silent. At about ten thirty, he went with his daughter and told them, “Be careful; something may happen tonight.” He did not say, “Something will happen,” nor did he give all the details. He only said, hesitantly, “Something may happen.” He was afraid of being exposed as a false prophet. Fifteen minutes later the earthquake struck, and not a single person died in Corinth. Corinth lay in ruins; ninety percent of its buildings were uninhabitable, yet there was not one victim. And when did it happen? At eleven o’clock, when the people were no longer outside at work.
Everyone was inside the cage: some in bed, others in a sinful bed, some at the discotheque, some at the card table, some in another’s embrace—one here, another there, all of them asleep. Yet there was not a single victim. Does this not astonish you? But who believes it? Who speaks about these things? Who tells them? They are never told. Do you know what happened in the town squares? Do you know that the church collapsed first, and the people came out to see it falling—and only then did their houses collapse? Do you know this? Otherwise, I tell you, there would have been millions of victims. It was the corrective wrath of the loving God. He brought down the rod and said, “Take heed.”
He shook those gentlemen who attribute everything to their own explanations. When they said, “There will be no earthquake,” the next day there was one measuring 6.3. And you see what is still happening when we refuse to understand these things. Do you know that in Pisia, that little village above Perachora, Saint Paraskevi appeared and said, “Do not be afraid of anything. Come, and I will give Holy Communion to you all”? Everything was flattened. Not even a mouse could have escaped from those ruins, yet everyone came out alive. She had appeared in a wall icon. Does that mean nothing either? Do you know that in Perachora the two churches fell first, and only afterward did the other buildings collapse?
I will not go any further into this. I look at what is happening around us, and I see that it is a miracle that we are here at this very hour. This is because of the love of God. God does not desire the death of the sinner. We are not righteous people of whom He might say, “Let them all die so that I may place them in Paradise.” We are sinners. He permits these things to happen so that we may repent, return to Him, and be benefited. An earthquake and every natural calamity can always become a blessing, provided that man is willing to make spiritual use of it. Here in Patissia, a man stopped an archimandrite in the street. “Father, stop and listen to me. The earthquake was not merely beneficial; it was exceedingly beneficial.”
And the priest said, “God is good, and He allows this so that we may come to our senses. Listen to me. For twenty years, my neighbor and I could not even say good morning to each other. For twenty years, when he came in through one door of the building, I would go out through the other. We had everything for twenty years, yet I had no fellowship with him, because we did not even exchange a good morning. But when the earthquake struck, I came out of my door and he came out of his. I helped him, brought him downstairs, put him in my car, and so on—and after twenty years we finally said good morning to each other. Glory to God.” Perhaps these things seem strange to you. Yet there are people who were edified and will continue to be edified. There are people who will say, “We must turn back.” Then they will not be able to say tomorrow what some children, some young women, and others will say about their parents:
“They never once said no to me. They never once came and stopped me.” God is not like that. God brings down the rod. Whoever spares the rod does not love the soul. Christ loves our souls, and He permits all these things that you see. Do not find them strange. I was also struck by another incident that a brother told us today about his father. He was eighty-two years old, unrepentant and had never been to confession. “Father, do these things mean nothing to you? You need to put your soul in order.” “Come now! I have reached eighty years of age.” “Father, I am telling you, put your soul in order.” The son had the foresight to play a cassette for him, one we had recorded about earthquakes after an earlier earthquake. I do not know what the elder heard on it, what happened within him, or how God spoke to him for his good through that cassette.
He called his son and said, “I will pay for the petrol. Will you take me to Patras, to the Gerokomeio, so that I can confess?” He meant the Gerokomeio district in Patras, where the work had flourished under Father Gervasios. Perhaps the old man himself was from Patras. So his son took him from here to Patras, and just the other day he made his confession there. Tomorrow, Friday, he will receive Holy Communion. To give you an idea of how little this eighty-two-year-old man—whom Christ had allowed to live all these years—knew about matters of faith, he said, “On Friday, when there is the Presanctified Liturgy”—but instead of saying “Presanctified,” he called it the “First-Sanctified”—“the day after tomorrow, go to church for the First-Sanctified.” He had some very confused ideas. But there were also others who blasphemed God.
When the earthquake of 1953 struck, a friend of mine from Kefalonia wrote to me: “What am I to do, Brother Panagopoulos? Everything else is well and good. It does not trouble me that we once had so much property and so many houses and now live under a tent. Only one thing troubles me: even under the tent, my father continues to blaspheme Christ.” Do you understand? This is the matter that should concern every person. Yet, as I told you, we did not make the use of this event that we should have; we did not allow ourselves to be edified by it. And some were not edified at all. How long God will remain over us with the rod, I do not know. But let us at least consider the prayer we say: “O Lord of Hosts, be with us.” Let Him come into our home.
But how can He come into the home when the other one is already sitting inside and saying, “What business do You have here? I am the one in charge. I will decide what they eat today”? Do you know that, under the tents, people ate steaks the other day—on Clean Monday and Clean Tuesday? They ate steaks under the tents. Do you realize that? It is enough to drive a person mad. What is God to do? If someone were ill, I could understand it. But these were strong, healthy men who could strike a wall and break through it. “Everything else may matter,” a person says, “but I will not do anything about this one thing.” Another said, “It is because of the cloud. When there is this cloud, a person has to eat.” And before the cloud came, what did you do? Did you fast then? You did not fast then either.
As the old saying goes, “I know the bridegroom even from the summer.” So it is exactly the same when we say to God, “Be with us.” It is a lie. We do not want You; we do not want You. Christ Himself said on another occasion, “They deny Me; they do not want Me.” In another vision, He appeared holding the earth in His hands, while the Most Holy Theotokos stood before Him, pleading, “Do not cast it down. Do not shatter it. Do not destroy it.” And do you know what He answered? “I will ask you one question, and you must answer Me. If they blasphemed your own mother, what would you do?” “Do not cast it down; do not cast it down.” And that sphere which He was about to hurl down and destroy—the world—He cast aside gently, so to speak, dropping it there beside Him.
Compared with what we deserved to suffer, have we truly suffered? And at the very epicenter, at the root of it all, in the place called Schinos, which had lately become a kind of Hollywood, the following happened. There were about twenty or twenty-five people in their homes. What do you think happened? One man was missing, and the story had spread that he must be lying dead inside his house. But no one would go and open the house. So the gendarmerie in Loutraki was notified, and the police came with a hearse to open the house and take him away. They arrived at night, at half past ten.
When the people heard that the police and a hearse had arrived, they went to see what was happening. Everyone who had been inside their homes gathered there, and just as the sergeant put the key into the door to open it, the earthquake struck. So all those people were outside, not in their homes. When they returned, their houses had sunk into the earth and disappeared. Was that luck too? Was that also mere luck? Those scoundrels did not report it. They did not write about it. They attribute everything to science and everything to nature. Yes, nature acts; we agree. But does the fact that I am protecting you mean nothing? Does that tell you nothing? And there were a thousand other such things. In any case, I do not know—forgive me for speaking this way.
I do not want to discourage anyone, but let us stop being false. God is giving us more time so that we may change. He bears us no malice. Let me tell you how He exposes the shame we refuse to recognize. Are not today’s houses like royal palaces? Today, ordinary people—not kings—live in luxury and comfort beyond even the kings of old. You live in houses so richly furnished that you hardly know where to step. You know the ancient story: a man was once invited into such a house and, looking around, could find nowhere suitable to spit, so he spat in the face of the master of the house. “There is nowhere else to spit,” he said. “Everything here is gold and finery.” So he spat in his face. And today we
have all been born princes. Yet in a fraction of a second, God made us wanderers living in tents—all of us under canvas. You who sit in high places and say that you build and accomplish everything, that with the touch of a button you control all things and live like kings—I shall order you straight into the tents. And into the tents they all went, reduced in a fraction of a second to homeless wanderers. Yet will none of this leave any mark on them? He showed us everything. Can you rely on your position, your money, or anything else? On nothing—only on God. But who considered that? Who reflected on it? Go and investigate for yourselves, and see what truly happened. But how long will this go on? How long? In any case, we have once again been granted an extension of time. People will remain afraid for a while, and that fear is natural.
There is the lion, but there is also the hare; God Himself made them both. I do not blame a person for being afraid. Let him remain there—but let him repent. Candles as tall as a man will not do; such things do not pass with God. Can a person continue in a sinful life? Christ seeks to enter every person’s home, to enter the bedroom, the cashbox, the cooking pot—to enter the whole of life. That is what He asks. Holy Scripture and the Gospel speak of birth pangs and sorrows in various places. What is yet to come! The time will come, as I was reading the other day, when we shall long to die and beg the mountains to fall upon us and cover us, because of what will be happening. Read the accounts of those who lived near the earthquake. You will shudder: what came up from the earth, what fire came out of the sea, what happened, and how a person can perish in a fraction of a second. But I repeat: we do not want to look at these things. So I say that this season, these days, this period remind us of many things. Yet if we choose to walk in the opposite direction while saying, “O Lord of Hosts, be with us,” as though saying, “Let me be with You; let me come to You; let me receive You,” while still keeping the Lord shut outside, these things cannot be reconciled.
“I hold on to Christ; I go to church; I keep my vigil lamp burning,” and so on. Keep whatever outward things you wish, but you must remove the devil from your midst. You must repent, confess, and make peace with God. God says, “I will not accept living together with Satan. Either I will dwell here or he will.” God is jealous for us, because this is what is truly best for man. Unfortunately, man does not see what is for his own good. And what is for my good? It is for me to be with God. But for Him to be with me, I must do what He wills. How can anyone respect you, care for you, or stand by you when you accuse him, ignore him, and refuse to acknowledge him? How can your health remain with you when you do not
take care of it, but do exactly the opposite of what it requires? How is that possible? So this is precisely what I am saying: let us pay attention to this matter, because God gives us both the opportunity and the means. He shows us exactly how we must labor and what we must do. I repeat this because, when I speak in this way, some people think that I am driven by some passion or that I have something against someone. No, that is not my purpose. My purpose is to emphasize and bring to light God’s love for man. God is not a criminal, as some say. No, God is love. But consider a mother or father who loves a child. If a mother sees that a fire has broken out and the child will not wake up, she shakes the bed, but the child still does not wake. If she loves the child, she will throw him out of the bed. She will seize him and throw him out the window, whether he survives the fall or not. That is what Christ will do.
We want Him not to shake the things around us, so that we may go on using them for the destruction of our souls. For today, most of the things Christ gives us are used to the destruction of our souls. Yet this season is not concerned only with these outward matters. Above all, this season has been given to man in order to make him understand that he must become a child of God. If man does not become a child of God, but remains merely a creature made by God, then he has failed. I went to church at six o’clock, as some of you may also have done, and I heard a troparion of the Church that made such an impression on me that I looked for it in the Triodion, so that I could present it to you accurately.
As you know, during these days we tend to focus entirely on a dry fast—a bowl of bean soup without oil, a few olives, a piece of fruit, and so on—while so many other matters remain unresolved. We imagine that behind this dry fast everything else has been put in order. But let me remind you: have we ever considered Satan? Does he ever eat? He both fasts and keeps vigil. I ask you, does he eat? What benefit is there if I do not eat, while paying no attention to anything else? Many of us speak only about fasting from food, the fasting of the body. We do not speak about spiritual fasting as well. And I do not know whether you noticed that the other day our Church
spoke about fasting and exhorted us to fast, but placed fasting between two other virtues. First, it spoke of forgiveness; then it spoke of fasting; and third, it spoke of almsgiving. It placed fasting between these two other virtues so that it could stand, because fasting cannot stand by itself. Yet we have fixed our attention on a dry fast alone. Each person fasts as much as his strength allows, but that is all. This is the troparion I selected and wished to present to you. It says: “Brethren, as we fast in body, let us also fast in spirit.” Man has two aspects.
Has he turned off the television during these days when he fasts from oil? Tell me—who has done so? If he used to speak a million words a day, has he reduced them to a hundred thousand? Has he bridled his tongue? Who has stopped looking at what he ought not to see, speaking what he ought not to say, and listening to what he ought not to hear? Man is like the one described in the parable of the Great Supper, the man who had five pairs of oxen. Do you know what they represent? The five pairs are our senses: two eyes, two ears, and then taste, touch, and the rest.
When a person puts all these senses to work for his own pleasure, he is not fasting spiritually. Just as the body needs to fast, so too does the spirit. And here the hymn gives us this watchword: “Brethren, as we fast in body, let us also fast in spirit.” Yet we do not fast in spirit. We may have plain bean soup before us, but I do not know what else we are consuming from the television screen. I do not know what we consume from a corrupt magazine.
I do not know where we spend our days and hours, whether we praise God during these days and seek to draw closer to Him. For us to draw nearer to God, and for God to draw nearer to us, we must create the proper spiritual climate in which this union can take place. The hymn continues: “Let us loose every bond of injustice.” “Let us loose every bond of injustice.” It is true that there are many unjust deeds in our lives that have neither been brought to Holy Confession nor set right. They form a link in a chain that holds us fast—some sin that keeps its grip on us. We must beseech God to reveal that sin. I was impressed by
the sensitive conscience of a young woman. There was a discussion today or yesterday—I do not remember—and she became troubled because, when she was a little girl, she would sometimes steal from the counter of her father’s or mother’s shop and take a sweet or something of that sort. Now, as she searches her conscience to discover whether Satan still has some hold on her, she remembers this as well and begins to question herself: “What am I to do about something I did as a child but never confessed? And if I now wish to set it right by making restitution in kind, how much should I repay?”
For example, if it was ten thousand gold drachmas then, how much should I repay now? Ten thousand worthless drachmas? How is this to be settled? I confess, it was not the act itself that impressed me; I am far worse. What impressed me was the concern that immediately arises within a person once he begins to think that he must put his soul in order. One day he must present it perfect, without spot or wrinkle. That is the point. Take a bride in her wedding garment: if flies have settled on it and soiled it, they may be tiny flies, but what kind of wedding garment is it then, and where can that bride present herself? And is Christ to blame—Christ, who fashions and tends this garment through His Church, and who wants it to be pure? We say it especially during these days: “I behold Thy bridal chamber adorned, O my Savior, and I have no wedding garment that I may enter.” We say this during these days. Is Christ to blame? See how deeply He cares. And there are many such things. These are minor matters. She will repay what she owes, ask forgiveness, confess it, and put it right. But there are other things
that are more serious and remain unresolved. Why, you may ask, do they remain? Because often they have to be torn away with the skin itself. Have you ever had a wound with the gauze stuck to it? What does it take to pull it off? There are many such things within a person, and they form a link in the chain that holds him fast. He must make a sacrifice. He may have to leave a position he holds unlawfully, step aside, and put in his place the person who rightfully belongs there. He may have to repay something to the state, an organization, a government department, or the tax office. Such things hurt, so he keeps avoiding them. But the links remain fastened there—links in a chain. And when a person is bound by even one sin, he cannot move forward. So God permits him to be thrown from his bed to the floor and says to him, “Take heed. Put yourself in order. Prepare yourself. Loose every bond of sin.” That is the point. Yet sadly, man pays no attention.
You may find what I am saying strange—that even a single link can hold us. There is a humorous story about this. Once, in the harbor of a large city, a foreign ship had anchored. As usual, the sailors went ashore to enjoy themselves in the evening, to drink, and so forth, intending to return to the ship during the night in their boats. In the morning, people walking along the waterfront on their way to work saw two sailors in a boat, sweating and pulling hard at the oars, while the boat did not move at all. What had happened? The people stopped and laughed. What had happened was that the sailors had returned to the boat drunk, but had not untied its rope.
They kept rowing until the morning sun found them still pulling at the oars, unable to go anywhere. This is what happens to those who supposedly want to take flight through fasting, ascend to Heaven, and find rest, while some link in a chain is still holding them. Even one is enough to hold us fast. “I have a hold on you,” a demon said one night to a young woman at the Monastery of Penteli. “Me?” “Yes, you. I have a hold on you through three things.” And it told her where it held her. “You made long-distance telephone calls but paid only the local rate. While you were in the hospital, you burned rubbing alcohol to keep yourself warm and pretended it was for the patient.
You left the house and allowed your cousin to remain there with his girlfriend. Yes, I have a hold on you through those things,” it said. “Every bond.” How much time Christ grants us in these days to search ourselves and say: “My God, where is it? Tell me. Remind me, my God: what have I not put right? What matter have I left unresolved?” That is why the Church insists here and says, “Let us loose every bond of injustice,” whether it is an injustice against our neighbor or against our own immortal soul, for we wrong ourselves more than anyone else. “Let us break the strangling bonds of oppressive dealings.” Strangling bonds—nooses and traps we have set for many people, making them sign documents, creating situations that place a noose around their necks. All these things, it says, we must undo and tear apart. Why? By freeing the other person, we first free ourselves. Such things do exist. “Let us tear up every unjust contract.”
How many people have created unjust situations! I know parents who have wronged their children because of sentimental favoritism toward a daughter, a brother, another child, and so forth. They have not acted justly. They have drawn up and left wills that, as soon as they depart this life, bring lawsuits crashing down upon their families. Families and relatives are torn apart. All of this must be erased and justice restored, because God is just, and Heaven does not tolerate such things. “Let us give bread to the hungry”—let us give bread to those who hunger. People say, “Glory to God, there are no hungry people today. There are none.” But what about the dogs? Dogs are fed today. You know that there are special sections
in supermarkets, both abroad and here, with entire aisles for dogs and cats. Is it possible for dogs to be fed today while human beings go hungry? Even today, at the height of the twentieth century, people are hungry. You can smell it on their breath. There are people today—I know this through my own small ministry—who do not have a blanket and tremble from the cold. Such things happen today. “I do not know anyone like that,” a person says. But have you ever taken an interest? If you want, go to your parish church, to the charitable fund. Those who open that poor box every week find only fifteen or twenty drachmas inside it. Go to that charitable committee and see how many people they can show you.
If you do not want to give even one drachma, let them take you by the ear and lead you there so that you may see with your own eyes where people live, where they suffer, and where they hunger today, in the twentieth century—while cats and dogs are fed every kind of delicacy. There are human beings who are hungry. “Let us give bread to the hungry,” it says, “and bring the homeless poor into our homes.” Yes, it still applies: we are to bring the homeless into our own homes. I do not know whether you are aware that when Muslims build a house, they always include a room for the guest. Besides the guesthouse belonging to the community, the home itself will also have such a room. Is there room for anyone to stay in our homes? A girlfriend may stay there. A girlfriend may stay, but a brother of Christ will not. How, then, will Christ look upon you? And yet this is part of the whole purpose. If He is to accept your fasting, when you fast bodily, you must loose the bonds of injustice.
All those dishonest schemes you have set in motion—signing documents, obtaining signatures by deceit, and so forth—whether they involve legal entities, the state, or private individuals, must all be put right. Only then will you receive the Great Mercy of God. If you fall short in these matters, you will not receive the Great Mercy of God.
Let that remain with you! The other day we spoke about the Judgment and about who will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. We found that the Kingdom of Heaven is inherited; it is not wages earned by merit. It is inherited by those who are of God’s own family. This is something to which man has not paid attention, even though Christ came into the world above all for this very purpose. And that is precisely why, if you have noticed...
There are only two full Divine Liturgies each week, on Saturday and Sunday, because this is a season of mourning. Since the Holy Eucharist is a joyful event, its celebration is not permitted on the other days. Yet for the person who wants to become a prince, a child of the King, receiving Holy Communion only twice—on Saturday and Sunday—is not enough. For precisely this reason, from apostolic times, our Holy Church established the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. The Church keeps consecrated bread from Saturday or Sunday and offers it on Wednesday and Friday, so that a person may receive Holy Communion four times a week. Some have a ready answer: “Oh, are we worthy to receive Holy Communion four times a week?”
Are we worthy? Of course we are not. When will we become worthy? Were we worthy last year? No. The year before? No. Three years ago? No. Will we become worthy this year? No. Next year? No. We have no need of anything that merely cuts the ground from beneath our feet. If our unworthiness means that we must not approach, then it would mean that we are already as we should be and need nothing. But since the Kingdom is to be inherited, and we must become princes and children of the King, this blood within us must be changed. Holy Communion is divine communion; it is a transfusion of blood from God to man, so that man may become god by grace and become His child. If we are to inherit the Kingdom, we must be children of the King.
We must become princes. Commoners do not inherit a kingdom. That is its purpose. This is precisely why the Church offers more opportunities for receiving Holy Communion, so that people may commune more often. We were in church yesterday, and I watched—as you too may watch. The people did not even consider coming to church yesterday. They felt no need to receive Christ in Holy Communion. The Holy Bread remained there and was offered, but they felt no need for it. Some, of course, had not fasted. Some do not believe in it, and others are ignorant of these things. That is how it is. I want you to know that I saw many souls, both women and men, come and receive the antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after Liturgy—a dry piece of antidoron left from Sunday and kept by the priest. But antidoron does not impart sanctification; it does not transform a person or make him a child of the King. Only the Blood of Christ does that.
We must therefore understand what this service is. I shall read you its Cherubic Hymn, which is the central expression of this whole thought and action. Broadly speaking, I do not know whether you realize how many forms of the Cherubic Hymn there are. There is the Cherubic Hymn of John Chrysostom, which we hear regularly: “We who mystically represent the Cherubim,” and so forth. There is another Cherubic Hymn that we sing on Great Thursday: “Of Thy Mystical Supper, O Son of God, accept me today as a communicant,” and so forth. There is another that we sing on Great Saturday: “Let all mortal flesh keep silence,” and so forth. And there is this other Cherubic Hymn, the one used at the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. This Cherubic Hymn differs from all the others.
The divine Cherubic Hymn of John Chrysostom says, “We who mystically represent the Cherubim”—that is, as though we were Cherubim. What Cherubim? We are predators! Nevertheless, this is what the Church calls us to be, so that we may follow and attend to what is about to take place. But this hymn exhorts us with the words: “Now the powers of Heaven invisibly worship with us.” The powers of Heaven—the angels, archangels, Cherubim, Seraphim, thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers—worship invisibly and spiritually together with us. They worship. This is worship, not merely veneration. These are not gifts awaiting consecration; they are not bread and wine. They are the Body and Blood of Christ, already consecrated and reserved from the Holy Gifts sanctified on Saturday or Sunday, and now offered to the people.
This is done so that they may receive Holy Communion more often. In this case, then, it is truly worship. “For behold, the King of Glory now enters.” The King of Glory is passing before us. You have seen how it takes place, have you not? The priest is veiled and does not say the usual prayers, such as “May the Lord God remember all of us,” and so forth. He simply says, “Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers.” My God, I am carrying Thee; do not consume me with fire at this moment. “Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers.” This is the one moment when not merely kneeling but, if possible, placing our head upon the ground is permitted, because God Himself is passing before us at that moment. These are not gifts that will be consecrated later; the consecration has already taken place. That is why kneeling and worship are permitted at this moment. There, with our heads bowed to the ground, we bring our petitions before Him in prayer.
Whatever else concerns us—the affairs of the state, the Church, or people who are in anguish and suffering—a person may bring all of it before God at that moment. It is the most awe-inspiring hour. And after the Holy Gifts have entered the sanctuary, the chanter continues, as though telling us: “Behold, the mystical sacrifice, already completed, is escorted and enters.” The sacrifice is not about to be made now. It has already been completed and has been ready since the previous celebration; now it is simply offered to us. What remains? “Let us draw near with faith and longing.” Let us approach with faith and longing. Why? “That we may become partakers of eternal life.” The Holy Chalice is eternal life; the Body and Blood of Christ are eternal life.
And you sit there, simply looking on. Here I set Christ before you, and there I set sin before you—which will you choose? Here I set Christ before you, and there I set theft—which should you choose? Tell me. Christ is offered to you every day. You revile the clergy, you revile everything, and you accept nothing. According to your way of thinking, there should be no Church at all—not even to bury you or pray for you when you depart this life. And yet, out of love for you and me, Christ ensures that these things remain here and are offered openly. What do you do in response to all this? To preserve the natural life of your body, you eat three times a day, setting aside fasts and everything else because, as I told you, you fear for your stomach and all the other unhealthy conditions of our time. But what do you do for your soul?
The infection is already there. How will Christ come to you, and how will you be saved? “Without Me,” He says, “you can do nothing.” How, then, will you manage? And yet a person goes to church and waits at the end to receive that dry piece of antidoron, because he does not understand the essence of the service. Do you know what is said later in this same service? “We give thanks unto Thee, O God, the Savior of all, for all the blessings Thou hast granted us, and for the receiving of the Holy Body and Blood of Thy Christ.” The service has no other purpose. No offering may be brought that day. Neither may kollyva be brought. No sacrifice is celebrated. And since no sacrifice is celebrated, none of those things can be done. You cannot even bring the names of the departed to be commemorated there. Nothing.
If kollyva are commemorated, a Trisagion is read, but no particle is taken out. No ordination is performed. It is simply a service through which the Body and Blood of Christ are offered to us, so that we may receive Holy Communion more frequently, take God into ourselves, and have our nature transformed. “We give thanks to You, O God, the Savior of all, for all the blessings You have bestowed upon us, and for the receiving of the Holy Body and Blood of Christ. And we beseech You, O Master who loves mankind: keep us beneath the shelter of Your wings.” But how? If you do not receive Him within you, what is there to protect you? “And grant us, until our last breath, worthily to partake of Your holy things, for the illumination of soul and body and for the inheritance of the Kingdom of Heaven.” But when do we partake? These words do not apply to us. “For the inheritance of the Kingdom of Heaven.” I must become a child of the King in order to inherit the Kingdom, and this can happen only in this way. There is another hymn that says: “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” This is sung in place of “We have seen the true Light.”
It is heavenly; it does not come out of an oven. “Taste the heavenly Bread and the Cup of Life.” The Cup of Life! To sustain our natural life, we need meat, fish, fruit, bread, and all these material foods. To sustain our spiritual life, we need the manna that comes down from heaven. “Taste the heavenly Bread and the Cup of Life, and see that the Lord is good.” The Lord is good. You need the Lord; you need Christ. “For the Lord is good.” Someone says, “I cannot do it.” But you received Christ precisely so that you could. How can you say that you cannot? You repented, went to Holy Confession, went to Church, and received Christ within you. When the prodigal son returned and confessed, was he not given shoes so that he could walk? Was he not given the fatted calf so that he could regain his strength? So how will I be able to do all these things?
There is one more prayer I want to mention. It says: “O Lord our God, who have brought us to these most venerable days and made us partakers of Your dread Mysteries, unite us to Your rational flock and declare us heirs of Your Kingdom.” Again and again it speaks of heirs—of those who become God’s kin, Christ’s brothers and sisters, and children of God through divine communion, through Holy Communion. “And declare us heirs of Your Kingdom, now and ever and unto the ages of ages.” At the end there is also a beautiful prayer behind the ambo, which says the following.
The prayer behind the ambo says:
“O Master Almighty, who created all things in wisdom; who, through Your ineffable providence and great goodness, have brought us to these most venerable days for the purification of souls and bodies, for restraint of the passions, and for the hope of the Resurrection; who, over the course of forty days, placed the tablets into the hands of Your servant Moses: grant us also, O Good One, to fight the good fight, to complete the course of the fast, to preserve the faith undivided, to crush the heads of the invisible dragons, to be revealed as victors over sin, and, without condemnation, to attain to the worship of the holy Resurrection. For blessed and glorified is Your all-honorable and majestic name, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”
“now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.” With these words, the Church gives us, at the end, the meaning of this entire season and shows us what we must keep in mind as we face it. This is what I wished to say as we approach this great and all-embracing season, and in view of the help God has granted us through the earthquake as an act of loving correction, so that we may take heed and be edified.

«Άλλον γαρ εκτός σου βοηθόν εν θλίψεσιν ουκ έχομεν, Κύριε των δυνάμεων, ελέησον ημάς». Ερωτώ, μάλιστα αυτές τις ημέρες που είμεθα κάτω από αυτή την απειλή, πόσο πιο φανταχτερό πρέπει να παρουσιάζεται το πρόσωπο του Κυρίου και να το ζητάμε και να το παρακαλούμε. Ευχαριστούμε, λέγω, φροντίσαμε να έχουμε κάποια σχέση με αυτό το οποίο λέγομε, να είμεθα συνεπείς δηλαδή, τουλάχιστον με την προσευχή αυτή; Τον πιστεύουμε ότι είναι ο Κύριος των Δυνάμεων, του λέμε να γίνει μαζί μας και να μείνει μαζί μας. Λαμβάνει τίποτα σοβαρώς υπόψη ο άνθρωπος αυτές τις ημέρες που είναι ανάγκη;
η λεπτή συνείδηση μιας κόρης. Γινόταν μια συζήτηση σήμερα, χθες, δεν θυμάμαι, που προβληματίστηκε, διότι σαν κοπελίτσα, παιδί και λοιπά, έκλεβε καμιά φορά από τον πάγκο του πατέρα, της μητέρας, από το μαγαζί, και θα έπαιρνε κανένα γλυκό, ξέρω εγώ τι. Και έρχεται τώρα, μέσα στην αναζήτηση, να βρει μήπως ο σατανάς την κρατάει πουθενά, να βρει και αυτό, και να διερωτάται και να προβληματίζεται. Τι γίνεται με αυτό το πράγμα, που εγώ το έκανα αυτό το πράγμα σαν παιδί, δεν το εξομολογήθηκα όμως; Και αν θα έρθω τώρα να κάνω, διά της ταυτοπαθίας, τακτοποίηση, να αποδώσω, πώς πρέπει να αποδώσω;
Μόνο δύο κανονικές λειτουργίες την εβδομάδα, μόνο Σάββατο και Κυριακή, διότι είναι πένθιμος η περίοδος και διότι η Θεία Ευχαριστία είναι χαρμόσυνο γεγονός, δεν επιτρέπεται. Όμως, διότι δεν είναι αρκετό στον άνθρωπο που θέλει να γίνει πριγκιπόπουλο, βασιλόπουλο, το να κοινωνεί δύο φορές μόνο, Σάββατο και Κυριακή, γι’ αυτό ακριβώς έχει επινοήσει η Αγία μας Εκκλησία, από αποστολικών χρόνων, έχει επινοήσει και τη λειτουργία των Προηγιασμένων. Κρατάει δηλαδή ηγιασμένον άρτον από το Σάββατο ή την Κυριακή και τον προσφέρει Τετάρτη και Παρασκευή, και έτσι ο άνθρωπος μπορεί να κοινωνεί τέσσερις φορές τη βδομάδα. Η απάντηση είναι πρόχειρη σε ορισμένους. Α, είμαστε άξιοι για να κοινωνούμε τέσσερις φορές τη βδομάδα;
Κάθεσαι, άνθρωπε, και κοιτάζεις. Εδώ σου βάζω Χριστό και εδώ σου βάζω αμαρτία, τι θα προτιμήσεις; Εδώ σου βάζω Χριστό και εδώ σου βάζω κλεψιά, τι πρέπει να προτιμήσεις; Πες μου. Σου προσφέρεται ο Χριστός κάθε μέρα. Βρίζεις τον κλήρο, βρίζεις τα πάντα, δεν παραδέχεσαι τίποτα, που δεν έπρεπε να υπάρχει καμιά εκκλησία, ούτε να σε κηδέψει, ούτε να σε παρακαλέσει τίποτα όταν φύγεις και πας από εκεί. Και εντούτοις θα διατηρεί εδώ να υπάρχουν, επίσημα, από αγάπη προς εσένα και εμένα. Τι κάνεις έναντι αυτών όλων των πραγμάτων; Για να διατηρείς τη φυσική ζωή του σώματός σου, τρεις φορές της ημέρας καταλύεις και νηστείες και τα πάντα, με τον φόβο, όπως σας είπα, του στομάχου ή των άλλων ανθυγιεινών περιστάσεων που έχουμε σήμερα. Για την ψυχή σου τι κάνεις;
Ουράνιο, δεν βγαίνει από φούρνο αυτό. «Άρτον ουράνιον και ποτήριον ζωής γεύσασθε». Ποτήριον ζωής. Για να διατηρηθεί η φυσική ζωή, χρειάζεται το κρέας, το ψάρι, τα φρούτα, το ψωμί κλπ., όλα τα υλικά αυτά. Για να διατηρηθεί η πνευματική ζωή, το μάννα που κατεβαίνει από τον ουρανό. «Άρτον ουράνιον και ποτήριον ζωής γεύσασθε και ίδετε ότι χρηστός ο Κύριος». Χρηστός ο Κύριος. Σας χρειάζεται ο Κύριος, σας χρειάζεται ο Χριστός. «Ότι χρηστός ο Κύριος». Δεν μπορώ, λέει. Μα πήρες τον Χριστό για να μπορείς. Πώς δεν μπορείς; Μετανόησες, εξομολογήθηκες, πήγες στην εκκλησία, πήρες τον Χριστό μέσα σου. Όταν επέστρεψε ο άσωτος υιός, που εξομολογήθηκε, δεν του έδωσε παπούτσια να μπορεί; Δεν του έδωσε τον μόσχο τον σιτευτό να δυναμώσει; Πώς εγώ θα μπορέσω να τα κάνω αυτά;
