Summary

The lecture interprets earthquakes as theomēnia, events permitted by God to awaken believers and unbelievers rather than as meaningless natural accidents. Biblical earthquakes at Christ’s Crucifixion and Resurrection and during the imprisonment of Paul and Silas are presented as purposeful signs serving God’s saving work. The proper Christian response to disaster is therefore humility, compassion for sufferers, trust in God’s mercy, and personal repentance rather than speculation, blame, or confidence in human security.

Our subject this evening will be drawn from the events of these past few days. I believe that all of us have been concerned, and remain concerned, about what took place so suddenly: the earthquake that no one expected.

Believers and unbelievers alike are talking about this event, and everyone has an opinion. I do not know whether you who are listening to me now have a correct understanding of it—or, at least, a Christian understanding.

On this subject, everyone says whatever he likes. How many are telling the truth, how many are speaking correctly, how many grasp the reality or even come close to it, I do not know. Yet in such cases, our people give the soundest interpretation.

They use one word: theomēnia, an act of divine providence manifested through calamity. This is the standpoint from which a person must judge the matter if he does not want to be deceived. Just as severe weather can often be beneficial and instructive, so this theomēnia is instructive and saving, both for believers and for unbelievers. To form a correct judgment about this matter, a person must understand that God

has never undertaken any obligation to let a person live on earth for as long as he wants, in whatever way he wants, and then die in the manner he chooses—though man never wants to die at all. No such agreement exists. Therefore, a person has no grounds for resentment if some unexpected and even violent means sweeps him out of this world. Once he begins from the understanding that God has no obligation to place us here under a glass dome, shelter us delicately, or keep us in an incubator, but that we are exposed to dangers—dangers that can carry us into the next life from one moment to another—he will see things differently and be edified by this event.

If he is a Christian, he will become more truly Christian; and if he is an unbeliever, he will be shaken and, if he so desires, become a believer. As you have heard and seen, many different opinions are circulating, along with many different ways of approaching this matter. So I ask: do we who call ourselves Christians have a correct understanding, and do we respond properly to this event—or to any other event that may occur? No. We do not even know how. We do not want anything to disturb us or anything to move and make us dizzy. We want security. Why, then, does the earth move? That is another question. Although Scripture says that God has established it upon its firm foundation—I do not know whether you have ever read this. While searching through my papers, I found the passage:

it says that God established the earth upon its firm foundation. Why, then—and this is an important question—does it move? This is something that should concern a person, and it is possible to find a sound answer. For example, in Psalm 103, verse 5, I find the following: “He established the earth upon its sure foundation; it shall not be moved unto ages of ages.” That is what is written. Is it false? No, it is not false; it is true. Then why is the earth shaken? Why does it move, overturn, and appear to be acted upon? And in what way is it acted upon?

Is it commanded to do these things, or does it do them by itself? Let the world say what it will; let science say what it will. The Bible says the very opposite, and the Church says the very opposite. It is not the earthquake that moves the earth; sin moves the earth. And the earthquake is not an executioner but a teacher and disciplinarian. The earth is commanded to move and to do what it does. Even if we accept that this occurs through natural processes and that the moment has come for them to operate, permission must still be given—whether it should happen at all or whether it should happen sooner—because it is to serve some broader purpose. Everything you see around you and beneath your feet, everything you imagine to be within the earth, and everything we see above us,

as well as what we imagine to be there—all these things have the purpose of serving man, this cherished child. They were made for no one else, and they serve no one else. The same One who said that He established the earth upon its firm foundation says a little later in the same Psalm, Psalm 103: “He looks upon the earth and makes it tremble; He touches the mountains, and they smoke.” The earth, therefore, is acted upon so that it may do what it does. Of course, as you hear every day and in everything you may have read, we always offer scientific explanations, and these conflict with the Word of God. God speaks very differently. I am willing to grant science this much: let the natural processes be as you describe them. But nature has no reason of its own; it is governed by One who possesses reason. Woe to us if God had left it to do whatever it wished. Not one of us would remain. Only He who made nature and set its laws in operation governs it. He is the engineer outside the machine: He stops it whenever He wills, accelerates it whenever He wills, and sets it to work whenever He wills. A Christian must know this; otherwise, he will be driven this way and that by other ideas—often blasphemous ideas—which are foreign to reality, foreign to reality.

You should know, if you do not already, that our Holy Church is Spirit-bearing. She has written nothing and accepted nothing that was not impressed upon her by the Holy Spirit. She has a special service for earthquakes. Those of you who possess the Great Euchologion should open it to pages 411 through 416 and read the service for earthquakes. Your hair will stand on end when you see what it says and what it presents before God, asking Him to put an end to His righteous wrath. For unless He raises His hand and says, “Peace, be still,” what then? People say we were lucky that it happened during the day, lucky that the earth first trembled slightly and gave us time to get outside. These are foolish claims, always repeated by the senseless. What does “luck” mean?

Could He not have brought it upon us all at once, while you were asleep, before you had time even to draw breath, much less run outside? Could He not? Do these things not belong to Him? Are we going to direct them? We have immense pride. We may not know what is happening right under our noses, yet we say such things. As I have said, if you read that service, you will learn many things. I wish you had learned them already, instead of holding the same opinions as the world. In one of its stanzas it says: “O God, who shakes all the foundations of the earth.” Who moves the earth? Ask the scientists what supports the earth. We say: “He who hung the earth upon the waters.” He hung the earth upon the waters. The earth is like an object resting within the water.

Where does it stand? Where are its supports? What lies beneath it, and what lies above it? Where, as you say, does it stand?

It is surrounded by water, and the water holds the earth. What do these words mean? Our Church is here so that we may always follow her and be certain of the truth. Put your little head and all your cleverness behind the Church, and then, know this, you will be secure. “O God, who shakes all the foundations of the earth, who alone commands the great creature of the sea, as Creator of all things: deliver us from the fearful threat of the earthquake, O Lover of mankind, for we continually implore You because of Your tender mercy.” It is not because of our righteousness, but because of His tender mercy.

“Save Your creature, O Master.” We are the works of His hands. At our death we say, “You who made me and fashioned me.” Did you ever believe that during your life? Now that you have died, the chanters say it over your head. Yet you never believed that you were the work of His hands. God says, as it were: “What did I do for you? Look and see. When I brought you into the world, with a little spittle and a little earth I fashioned an eye, so that you might see that I am your Creator and acknowledge Me as such, just as I reveal Myself to you.”

There is another beautiful passage in that service, which says the following:

“The tongueless earth”—for it has no tongue with which to speak—“cries out with groaning: Why do you defile me with evil, O hard-hearted people? Why have you made me filthy? Why do you pollute me with the sins committed upon me—upon me? And our Master, who is also your God, sparing you, scourges me instead. He lays the blows upon me, and I endure them. Come to your senses, and through metanoia, through repentance, seek reconciliation with God.” Understand this: if I move and if I suffer, I bear it because of your sins.

Do you accept this? A person will admit these things when he dies. He will admit them then, but it will be too late. Until then, he will always search for natural, scientific, and rational causes, but never divine ones. For this is Satan’s device: always to steal the essence of the matter from man and leave him discussing winds and waters. Have you ever read about the various earthquakes, at least from a religious perspective? Leave aside the worldly accounts—however many there may be, forty or fifty of the most destructive, causing enormous damage. Leave aside even those that happened in our own land, for we too have our history here. But as religious people, have you ever found an earthquake that occurred entirely on its own, without arising in connection with some particular circumstance? An earthquake does not simply happen without purpose. The only discord in God’s creation is man.

Everything else submits to the Creator and operates within the law He established, serving man and, more broadly, the purpose for which God made it. Man is the sole discord, the only rebel, because he possesses free will. The sun will appear at seven-oh-one and set at six-eleven. Tomorrow it will appear at seven-oh-two and set at six-twelve. It has done so for thousands of years. According to Holy Scripture, the sun has been working for approximately seven and a half thousand years—leave science aside. According to Holy Scripture, it has worked for approximately seven and a half thousand years without losing a minute. If it did not possess this faithfulness and consistency, none of the scientists could calculate anything. I may make a calculation, but if the sun does not act accordingly,

then the calculation is worthless. Because creation is faithful, it enables even those others, the liars, to appear accurate and consistent. When someone tells you when an eclipse will occur, how can he know? On what basis? His basis is the dependability of God’s creation. If creation were to rebel as man rebels, you would be unable to determine anything. Put down your pencils and go home. Creation is faithful and works as God has appointed it. God is a God of order. Scientists obtain these results and can predict details, measure distances, and so forth because God has arranged everything perfectly. Nothing departs from that order. Let scientists say whatever they wish. If God commands these things to pass away, they will disappear in a fraction of a second, and nothing will remain before Him. The Apocalypse speaks of the events of judgment: the earth and the works within it will pass away. Heaven and earth will pass away, and new ones will come into being.

Do human beings make these things? Just as they made nothing in the beginning, neither will they make anything then. Just as they were not consulted when creation first came into being, neither will they be consulted when it is made anew. Remember what I am telling you here. We may no longer be present as human beings, but we shall exist as souls; remember then what I am telling you now. Let me open Holy Scripture and show you several incidents. We must turn to Matthew, chapter 27, verses 51 through 54. And behold, Christ is upon the Cross—men raised God upon the Cross—“and behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom,” by itself. What force of nature commanded the veil of the temple to tear from top to bottom?

He did it. “And the earth shook, and the rocks were split, and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. And coming out of the tombs after His Resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many.” And the centurion—that Roman officer who commanded the detachment there—“and those who were with him keeping watch over Jesus,” for they had been ordered to guard Him, “when they saw the earthquake and what had taken place, were greatly afraid, saying, ‘Truly this was the Son of God.’” This is what we too must say in these days. We should look with wonder, not at the earthquake itself, but at God’s love within the earthquake. For if He had allowed it to shake a little more, no one would have remained.

We Athenians especially ought to hide ourselves in shame, because for hundreds of years we have kept repeating the claim that Athens cannot be harmed. Sleep without a care, then; go on sinning, blaspheming, committing fornication and adultery. Any fear? None at all. People say that all this talk is ridiculous. Must there necessarily be a suitable volcano beneath the city? Is God unable to shake it? Did some volcano open there? Was there any destruction? It came at the very hour it needed to come. Nature is protesting. And nature is protesting now because of what it sees every day. If I told you what I saw yesterday at noon as I was coming here, near Saint George at the Poorhouse, in that enclosure they have opened in front of the Hilton—what I saw a couple doing—you would cry, “My God!”

Is such a thing possible? Is there so much insensibility? Even if it could happen on any other day, must it happen today, when everything is shaking, and in broad daylight? What, then, is God to see? And why should anything restrain Him? For what purpose? Suppose we were each granted another two hundred or three hundred years—or fifty, twenty, ten, five, two hundred, or three hundred years. What would we do with them?

What would we do? Would we do anything better? Have we done anything better than we did yesterday, or than we did in the year that has passed? What will we do? Have we changed? We have become worse, yes, but not better. Why should we continue to exist? Shine the light on what I am telling you, and here we see an earthquake: the earth itself moving and protesting against the sacrilege committed by God’s creature.

Thank you very much. You will find it further on.

Further on, the same Evangelist says: “After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, came and rolled away the stone from the entrance, and sat upon it.” The earthquake serves a purpose. It is not some caprice of nature. I want to impress this upon your minds. Do you understand? It is not merely a natural phenomenon. I say this so that we may be spiritually benefited. We must not discuss these things as the world does: “An earthquake is a random event; it is a natural phenomenon, and that is all.” Yet here, in what I am reading, I see that it is not merely a natural phenomenon.

It is commanded to happen, and there is a reason why it happens. Let us continue. I will take you to another instance. In the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 16, I find another event recorded here in my notes. Verse 25 speaks of Paul in prison at Philippi.

It says: “But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them”—that is, the others who were imprisoned there. “Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains were loosed.” We must not force all these things into our own explanations, because then we will not be spiritually benefited.

Neither we who are called Christians nor those who are not religious should immediately try to fit everything into purely scientific or rational explanations.

Why? Because this matter is meant to discipline and instruct us. As I told you at the beginning, what is an earthquake in itself when it is in God’s hands—as a force of nature, as one of His powers, as His command? What is it? An executioner? No, not an executioner. I told you that it is a teacher and disciplinarian. God does not punish. If He wanted to punish us, then the moment everything became quiet, He could shake the earth again and bury us all. “I could have destroyed you,” He says, “and I did not destroy you.” He could have destroyed us, and He can still destroy us. Whether nature produces an earthquake or not, He has the authority and the power to shake it.

We see in many instances that God does not wish to take revenge on man, regardless of the fact that some who undergo this discipline may depart from this life in such a way. As you heard in the reports from the various news media, thirteen people happened to make that final journey. Their time had come, and they departed through an earthquake. Others depart through cancer, others beneath the wheels of a vehicle, others through war, shipwreck, or fire. As I told you earlier, God never presented us with a contract governing this creation, so that we could accuse Him of acting wickedly toward us. What I want us to understand is that God is not an executioner. He never punishes vindictively; He disciplines and instructs.

When we suffer punishment, we bring it upon ourselves. We ourselves put our hand into the fire. We ourselves remain far from God and then experience the consequences. Yet from what we find in Holy Scripture—and I will point out several passages so that you may see it yourselves—it is clear that God does not desire “the death of the sinner, but that he should turn back and live.” For example, in the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 9, Christ is with His disciples and is going somewhere to preach. Let me read how the text puts it: “Now it came to pass, when the days were fulfilled for His Ascension, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem, and sent messengers before His face.”

These were human messengers, not angels from heaven. They went ahead to prepare for the others’ arrival. “And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him”—to prepare for Christ to come with the others. “But they did not receive Him.” They refused Him, “because His face was set toward Jerusalem. And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said”—notice their attitude—“Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?” They were asking the Lord whether He wanted them to call down fire from heaven, as had happened in the days of Elijah.

But He turned and rebuked them. They should not have said such a thing. He rebuked them and said: “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.” We are not of that spirit. “For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” So they left, “and went to another village.” If God were evil, as we claim, He could cleanse away our stench in an instant. What would happen then? Hell would fill more quickly. But He did nothing of the kind. I already owe a death; the earthquake does not change that. Yet at the same time, it may cut the cord of my life and leave me no further opportunity for metanoia, for repentance. Through this whole trial, through all this fear, it confronts us with our instinct for self-preservation,

with the fear of death, and, more broadly, with the Judgment. For if a person fears death, it is because he fears the Judgment. Judgment stands beyond death, and he fears that record of his life because he has stained it. That is why, in these days, we saw people behaving like unbelievers, like worldly people with no relationship to Christ, as though they knew nothing of what this means or how things truly stand. Whatever they might have done, they could not have escaped—not in a car, not anywhere. Even here in Athens, you do not know what may happen. Even a priest crowded into a car with two children and another person—children from his family—to flee from the face of Enceladus, as people say. When morning dawned, the priest from Pharassouli came out, and another young man came out as well.

Many opinions are being expressed about this matter, and particularly about the people who departed from this life in this way. We hear people saying that they must certainly have been sinners. Never entertain such a thought, and do not become a blasphemer. What do you know about those people?

Does God supposedly concern Himself only with sinners? On the contrary, He wants sinners to live longer, in the hope that they may come to metanoia, to repentance. That is how a rational person should think, if he believes in a good God. If he believes God is a sadist, then God ought also to have killed the very person who thinks that way, since that person has not acted rightly. Yet how does he judge his own case? He says that God is showing him longsuffering. But in the other person’s case, he accuses God of not being longsuffering and not waiting for him. If something happens in the home of someone we dislike, someone with whom we are on bad terms or who once wronged us, and that person suffers some misfortune, the poison immediately comes out. In our minds, we sit upon the judge’s bench and deliver the verdict. We claim to know why that person suffered, why this happened, and why that took place: “There, now they have been repaid.”

There is...

There is an incident in the Holy Gospel that deprives us of any right to speak this way and pass judgment. We do not know. What I am telling you now concerns unchanging, fundamental truths. God had them written, and God spoke them. Did not Christ Himself give this answer to people who had the same curiosity? There were two incidents. They knew of one of them and brought it to His attention because it had happened and deeply troubled them. Listen to what He says. I am reading from chapter 13 of Luke: “There were present at that time some who told Him about the Galileans.” Some people came to Christ and spoke “about the Galileans,” about certain Galileans,

“whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.” In other words, they had gone to offer sacrifice, and Pilate slaughtered them while they were sacrificing. It would be as though we went to Church to worship and were slaughtered inside. Where was God to protect us? We were doing something good. We were not stealing, committing fornication, or murdering; we were praying and offering sacrifice. Why, then, did this happen? It seemed very strange to them: since these people were doing good, surely God should have protected them there. So they brought the matter to Him as a question. “And Jesus answered and said to them.” There seemed to be only two explanations: either God was evil, or those people were sinners whose sacrifice God rejected, and He struck them down in the very act of doing good.

So Jesus answered them: “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered such things?” That is what you think, is it not? “No, I tell you.” No, that is not what happened. Then what did happen? You are not able to understand that here. So what are you to do? I will tell you what to do: “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” Your task is not to judge why this happened. Your task is to live in metanoia, in repentance, because the same thing may happen to you. The seriousness and present relevance of His words is clear from this: He was asked about one event, but He answered with two.

Christ Himself then brings before them another event from those days and says: “Or those eighteen upon whom the tower in Siloam fell”—another eighteen people. It is as though you went to Church and the bell tower fell and killed you. Do you understand?

“And killed them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the other people who dwelt in Jerusalem?” As though they were sinners, and so the tower fell upon them and struck them. “No, I tell you.” Then why did it happen? That is not for you to determine. “But unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” What right, then, do I have to step forward and say that Mrs...

Apostolou is being punished because of the mayor? Someone might say such a thing: perhaps he went to the mayor for a certificate and the mayor refused to give it to him; and now that the mayor’s wife has been injured by a beam falling upon her, he says that God punished the mayor because he did not give him the certificate. A person may say this—and unfortunately, we do say such things. We are quick to judge. We immediately draw conclusions and set ourselves up as judges. Bring the case before me, and I will settle it! But it is not like that. Where should our nous, our spiritual mind, turn? To the fact that these people suffered, or are still suffering. Tomorrow we ourselves may suffer; something else may happen. We know nothing. Our task is to be ready, not to flee. Some say, “They left and escaped.” Who told you that? It is an illusion. If God lets you escape, He does so for a purpose: so that you may repent, not because you have managed to get away from Him. Have we discovered some method of escaping Him? How can you escape? Can you flee from God?

Where will you go? If you read nothing else, have you ever read Jonah? Read Jonah. God told him to go and preach, but the task displeased him, and he did not go. To put the command out of his mind, he went down, bought a ticket, and set out for Spain, as he thought, far away from the face of the Lord. But is God not there? Of course He is. Jonah boarded the ship, and the wind began to blow against them, preventing them from making any progress. It became so violent that they were in danger of drowning. They tried to turn back and reach land, but they could not. The wind struck them from every side. Nothing worked. They could not escape God, so they began throwing the cargo overboard.

Many of us do something similar with what we have stolen: when the wrath of God comes upon us, we make vows and donate chandeliers to the Church. The sailors jettisoned the cargo, throwing everything into the sea. But even when everything was gone, nothing changed. Jonah himself had to be thrown into the sea. The sin had to leave the ship and fall into the sea, into the mercy of God. And when Jonah went into the sea, he did not jump; they threw him in, because sin does not cast itself out. We must cast it out; we ourselves must remove it. Then the sea grew calm. The great fish received its command: it swallowed Jonah and later brought him out. He had fled by land, returned by sea, came ashore again, and went to do what remained for him to do. How can you flee from God? How can you flee from God? You got into your car and escaped? You may turn somewhere else, the earth may open there, and something may swallow you, as it swallowed Dathan and Abiram. No one escapes. Our task was not to flee from the earthquake. The purpose of the earthquake was not to drive us away, but to bring us near to God.

No one should have moved from his home. The house shook, but it did not fall upon him. God simply shook him and gave him warning. He should gather his children, go before the holy icons, and kneel—and let the stones find him there. That is the purpose of the earthquake. Its purpose is not to kill people. God has ways of taking human life if He wills. But that is not His purpose. The purpose of all that happened is our correction and instruction. David speaks of another passage that I would also like you to know. In Psalm 138, verse 8, he says: “If I ascend into heaven...” You know, many of the great and powerful think that if the earth here is shaken by bombs and other disasters, they will leave in a spacecraft and go...

Up above in order to save themselves. That is what they are striving for. Do they need to find gold up there? They know there is no life there; they see that there is no oxygen. They know all this. Their aim is to go away and hide. This is the ultimate purpose of those great men: to save their own skins. Yet they themselves are preparing destruction. What will ordinary people do here—people whom they consider useless, who cannot even make a cup of coffee? “If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I descend into Hades, You are there also.” You are there even then, watching over sinners. “If I take up my wings at dawn and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall guide me, and Your right hand shall hold me.” Where can I go, he says? Where can I flee? And where can a human being flee from the face of God?

Did he not say, “Your mercy shall pursue me all the days of my life”? Why did he say this? Because the sinner would flee far from God, and he was praying that God’s mercy would never cease pursuing him until it caught him, brought him to repentance, and changed his life. Things today are so grievous in the sight of God that whatever happens is little compared with what ought to happen, with what humanity deserves on account of sin. And a time will come when all these powerful people—listen to me—will they say, “With God’s help we escaped,” or, “God willing”? No!

God? On Friday they will open their institutions again, and on Saturday as well, but they will say nothing about God. God will have no place among them. They have called in opinions about the earthquake from Judea and from Uppsala, but nothing about God—nowhere. It is grievous; it is a sign of our times. Do not remain distant from this. We should weep bitter tears. Do you understand? Nothing else can save us. Yet their day will come as well. If you wish to know beforehand what is going to happen, you will find it in the Apocalypse, in chapter 12, verses 12–16. You see how Holy Scripture, in the Apocalypse, describes events that will take place and come to pass.

John says:

“I saw when He opened the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black”—the sun turned black—“like sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood, and the stars of heaven fell to the earth.”

“As a fig tree casts its unripe figs”—as unripe figs fall to the ground, so the stars fell from heaven—“when shaken by a mighty wind. And the sky receded like a scroll being rolled up”—the sky was like a scroll—“and every mountain and island...”

“Was moved out of its place. And the kings of the earth, the great men, the commanders, the rich, the mighty, every slave and every free man hid themselves in the caves”—they went to hide in caves—“and among the rocks of the mountains.” And they spoke to the mountains, because even there they could find no rest. For it is sin that accuses and terrifies a person. So long as a person has not cast out sin, even if he hides in the most inaccessible place, he will still tremble, my dear friend. “They said to the mountains and the rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits upon the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?’”

Hide wherever you wish. As long as you carry your sinful conscience with you, it will accuse you. You cannot escape it. Your task is not to flee from the face of God. God wants you to draw near to Him. He wants you to flee from sin. Yet as long as sin remains, who has gone to Holy Confession during these days? Who has gone? An earthquake occurred, and if another comes, we will simply run away. Does no one have sins? Who went to confess? The only refuge is beneath the priest’s epitrachelion, his confessional stole. The only refuge is a changed life. If life has not changed, then nothing has happened. So, my beloved, God does not punish; He corrects and instructs, as I have told you. And this is a blessing for the human person. What is regarded as a curse is, in fact, a blessing for him.

In Psalm 93, verse 12, I find these words: “Blessed is the man whom You instruct, O Lord.” Blessed is the man—but does a person accept the Lord’s correction? No, he does not. He may even blaspheme God rather than accept it. He will attribute it to something else and explain it in some other way, so that he receives no spiritual benefit from it. Through this means, God wants to bring all of us near to Him. As I said at the beginning, He wants to make the Christian more truly Christian and to awaken some concern in the indifferent person. His purpose is to bring everyone near to Him, because we have gone far away. We have gone far away. Even we who are called Christians are not yet truly Christian enough to endure dwelling with Him for eternity.

Others have not even begun to seek such a life. Holy Scripture speaks of this again: “Those who distance themselves from You shall perish.” A person may have money and glory; he may possess whatever material goods he desires. But if he does not have God, he is the most wretched of men and is already lost—lost. Therefore, in these difficult circumstances, a person must always keep the appropriate verse in his nous, his spiritual mind: “Lord, You have been our refuge from generation to generation.” That is the blessed person—the one who says, “Lord, at every moment, whether easy or difficult, I have taken refuge in You.” For just as the person who lives far from God is in danger, so too is the person who is near to God. He may fall through pride and never be saved.

We are all in danger, and no one should ever speak confidently about himself, for, “Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.” Thus, if we wish to live rightly, it is not the earthquake we should fear, but sin. That must be our fear. We should fear the cause, not the result, because the earthquake is a consequence of sin. As I read to you, the earth is shaken because of the sins of humanity. And here the passage I read at the beginning applies exactly: the earth speaks without a tongue. I repeat: the earth, though speechless, cries aloud and groans.

“You wrong me and defile me, all you many people. Through your sins you have polluted me. Our Master, who is also your God, abhors your bloodstained way of life, and I tremble. Take heed when you see me tremble; understand, and through metanoia, through repentance, seek reconciliation with God.” Through repentance and the fulfillment of what it requires. Leave aside vows and candles if your heart has not been pierced with compunction.

Sins! Sin, metanoia, repentance, return, and a change in our way of life—nothing else can replace these. Christ did not shed His blood in order to receive candles, incense, and oil. These already belong to Him. This does not mean that His Church rejects such offerings—God forbid—but sin must be dealt with first. Otherwise, He accepts nothing. In such a case, He accepts nothing at all. That, then, is our task.

The cause is sin—the sin of humanity in general. Who is there, what household is there, that can come forward and say, “I myself, my household, my children, my life—all are in harmony with God”? If man were in harmony with God, he would never have had so much as a fever or a headache in his life. All these things are means of divine correction. So we have not escaped God, nor can we escape Him. If He wished to punish us—I repeat, if He wished to send us to Hell—not one of us would remain within a fraction of a second, at least not in all of Greece, much less here. And Athens, this filthy place which they claim cannot be shaken by earthquakes—may God not cast a fearsome glance upon it! Yet because there are also good people, we cannot speak as though all were evil. We are thankful, and perhaps we owe this prolongation of our lives, at least we Athenians...

...to those good people. Many of them are unknown: young women and young men who are chaste, pure, and honorable; gentlemen and ladies; and clergy too, despite the disgrace we ourselves heap upon them—yes, clergy too. Perhaps it is thanks to them that our time has been prolonged.

If we make good use of this, then perhaps what I am telling you—this change of direction—will seem strange to you. Wherever righteous people are found, they are a blessing. In an apartment building, for example, containing twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, or a hundred families, there may be only one righteous family, and for that one family’s sake God may spare the entire building from destruction.

That family is the fragrance, the blessing, the guarantee, the protection even of everyone else—the rogues and those who are indifferent. I remember—and you will remember it too—how God was received as a guest in the persons of the three Angels by the oaks of Mamre, as we read in Genesis. They revealed that they were going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. You remember that, do you not? When Abraham heard it, he interceded, though the people of Sodom and Gomorrah below knew nothing of what he was doing on their behalf. He interceded for them and entreated God, saying, “If there are fifty righteous people in that city, will You destroy the city? You are the Righteous One.”

“Will You destroy the righteous together with the unrighteous?” he asked. “No,” God said, “I will not do it.” But there were not fifty. The population numbered five million, yet there were not fifty righteous people. “What if there are forty?” “I will not do it.” “I have dared to speak to my Lord; what if there are thirty?” “I will not do it.” “What if there are twenty?” “I will not do it.” “What if there are ten?” He came down to ten. “I will not do it.” Abraham did not ask about a smaller number. Perhaps he did not go further because he thought, “Surely there must be ten; what else could be the case?” But there was only Lot’s family. And who among them specifically? Lot alone. Not Lot’s wife, nor his children, nor his sons-in-law—only Lot. There was one righteous man, and God saved him. For the sake of that one man, if there had been even ten like him, Sodom and Gomorrah would not have been burned. All the other sinners would have been spared because of those ten. This is a vivid, God-given example.

Then, when Lot departed—you remember—the sons-in-law refused to go with him and were lost, while the others went on. His wife looked back out of curiosity and became a pillar of salt. Lot could not go where God had told him, so he said, “No, Lord. Grant me leave to go to that little city, Zoar,” and so forth. God told him, “Go where you must go, so that you may untie My hands.” One man had bound the hands of God, and divine justice could not act; God waited for that man. Lot went to the city of Zoar and lived; he was saved, and that city was not burned because Lot was in it. Do you understand these things? Do you grasp them? What does this mean?

It was as though he had bound God’s hands. “Go, so that you may untie My hands and I may do what must be done.” Another example, this time from the New Testament, is found in the final chapter of Acts, when Paul was being taken as a prisoner to Rome. You know what happened at sea: they were in danger of drowning. They threw their cargo into the sea, and no one aboard was eating; they were all at the point of death. But during the night an angel appeared to Paul and said, “Paul, you must stand before Caesar. You will arrive there; do not be afraid. And not only you, but all those sailing with you as well.” There were 276 of them. “God has granted them to you,” the angel told him. “He has given their lives into your keeping.”

The lives of all 276 people aboard the ship. For your sake, because of you, none of the others will drown.

“Paul stood in their midst and said, ‘Men, you should have listened to me.’” You were obliged to listen to me at that time, he says, “and not to have sailed from Crete and incurred this injury and loss. And now I urge you to take courage.” I bring you news: do not sit here despairing. “For there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.” The ship will be lost, he says, but all of us will live. “For this very night there stood beside me an angel of the God to whom I belong”—the God whose I am and with whom I have a living bond—“and whom I worship, saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar. And behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.’” And it says here that “all the souls aboard the ship were 276”—and they were spared for Paul’s sake.

All 276 of them. This is the point. Therefore: supplication and prayer, not running away. Get down on your knees; do not run on your feet. When faced with an earthquake, fall to your knees, not to running. We cannot escape God anywhere. If we wish to be benefited, this is what we must do. We are continually being warned. Bring metanoia, repentance, into your home; change your way of life; go to Holy Confession; repent; cast out your sins, and then you will be secure. That is the best insurance in the world. Bring the bearing of children into your home; bring fasting into your home, especially with these days approaching, since Meatfare begins on Sunday. For things are not well. Do you know what another warning that came from Aigeira says? It says this...

A driver picked up an old woman on the road to take her toward Aigio. “Come in, grandmother,” he said. “Where are you going?” “To Aigio,” she replied. As they approached Aigio, the old woman asked to get out. She was holding nothing in her hands. “I am getting out, my child,” she said, “but let me give you something.” “What could you give me, grandmother?” he asked. “I too have something to give you, since you brought me here.” “But what? You do not even have a bag,” he said. “I do,” she replied. “It is in my bag.” She opened a bag for him, and he saw something inside. “What are these?” he asked in alarm. “Last year,” she told him, “you ate; this year you will lick; next year you will be eaten.” Then the old woman vanished from his sight. God speaks in countless ways. God speaks in countless ways, hoping that someone may repent—if only someone would repent. This effort of God too has come to nothing, but it leaves us without excuse. Tomorrow we will not be able to say to Him, “You never took us by the ear.”

That is all. Go back to your homes. Do you want to stay outside? What foolishness is this? What good can that accomplish? Has anyone down there repented? This is what I had to say with God’s help, and if I have made a mistake, may God forgive me. Amen.

την έχει, λέγει, επί την ασφάλειαν αυτής τοποθετήσει ο Θεός. Γιατί, ενδιαφέρον, αυτή κουνιέται; Είναι κάτι που πρέπει τον άνθρωπο να τον απασχολήσει και υπάρχει εκδοχή να βρει κάποια απάντηση σωστή. Επί παραδείγματι, στον 103ο ψαλμόν, στίχος 5, φαίνεται, βρίσκω το εξής: «Ὁ θεμελιῶν τὴν γῆν ἐπὶ τὴν ἀσφάλειαν αὐτῆς· οὐ κλιθήσεται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα τοῦ αἰῶνος». Έτσι γράφει. Γράφει ψέματα; Δεν γράφει ψέματα, γράφει αλήθεια. Τότε γιατί κλίνεται, γιατί κουνιέται, γιατί αναποδογυρίζεται, γιατί επηρεάζεται, ως φαίνεται; Πώς φαίνεται επηρεάζεται;

Η Αγία μας Εκκλησία, να ξέρετε αν δεν το ξέρετε, είναι πνευματοφόρος. Δεν έχει γράψει τίποτα και δεν έχει παραδεχτεί τίποτα το οποίο δεν έχει εντυπωθεί από το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Έχει ειδική ακολουθία διά τους σεισμούς. Όσοι έχετε Μέγα Ευχολόγιο, να το ανοίξετε στη 411 σελίδα μέχρι 416, να διαβάσετε την ακολουθία των σεισμών. Θα σηκωθεί η τρίχα σας. Το τι λέγει, το τι παρουσιάζει στον Θεό για να σταματήσει η δικαία οργή του. Διότι, αν δεν σηκώσει το χέρι του αυτός επάνω και να πει «Σιώπα, πεφίμωσο», είμαστε τυχεροί που έγινε ημέρα και είμαστε τυχεροί που κούνησε λίγο πρώτα και προλάβαμε να βγούμε. Αυτά είναι αστεία, πάντα λένε οι άμυαλοι. Τι θα πει τύχη;

Τα φτιάχνουν οι άνθρωποι; Όπως δεν έφτιαξαν τίποτα, ούτε πρόκειται να φτιάξουν. Όπως δεν ερωτήθησαν όταν έγιναν, ούτε τώρα θα ρωτηθούν όταν θα ξαναγίνουν. Θυμηθείτε τα εδώ που σας λέγω. Πιθανόν σαν άνθρωποι να μη βρισκόμαστε, σαν ψυχές όμως θα υπάρχουμε, και θυμηθείτε τα εδώ που σας λέγω. Ας σας ανοίξω, επί παραδείγματι, να σας αποδείξω από τη Γραφή διάφορα περιστατικά. Άρα θα πρέπει να πάω στο 27ο κεφάλαιο του Ματθαίου, στίχοι 51-54. Και ιδού ο Χριστός στο Σταυρό, οι άνθρωποι ανέβασαν τον Θεό στο Σταυρό, «καὶ ἰδοὺ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη εἰς δύο ἀπὸ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω», μόνο του. Ποια φυσική δύναμη διέταξε να ανοίξει το καταπέτασμα του ναού από άνωθεν έως κάτω;

Τους ανθρώπους, αγγελιοφόρους, όχι αγγέλους από τον ουρανό. Πήγαν μπροστά να ετοιμάσουν για να πάνε οι άλλοι. «Καὶ πορευθέντες εἰσῆλθον εἰς κώμην Σαμαρειτῶν, ὥστε ἑτοιμάσαι αὐτῷ». Να προετοιμάσουν για να έρθει ο Χριστός με τους άλλους μαζί. «Καὶ οὐκ ἐδέξαντο αὐτόν». Δεν τον εδέξαν, δηλαδή αντεστάθησαν, «ὅτι τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ἦν πορευόμενον εἰς Ἱερουσαλήμ. Ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ Ἰάκωβος καὶ Ἰωάννης, εἶπον» — τη συμπεριφορά τους — «Κύριε, θέλεις εἴπωμεν πῦρ καταβῆναι ἀπὸ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἀναλῶσαι αὐτούς, ὡς καὶ Ἠλίας ἐποίησε;» Θέλεις, του λέει, του Κυρίου τώρα, να πούμε να βρέξει φωτιά από τον ουρανό, όπως έγινε επί ημερών Ηλιού;

Διάδοχος Φωτικής, Ευαγγελισμός, Ανάσταση, Ανάσταση, Αποκάλυψη, Αντίχριστος, Αντίχριστος, Αντίχριστος, Ανάσταση, Αντίχριστος, Αν. Πολλές γνώμες γύρω στην υπόθεση αυτή και συγκεκριμένα στους ανθρώπους οι οποίοι έφυγαν δι' αυτού του τρόπου. Και ακούμε και λένε ότι αυτοί ασφαλώς ήσαν αμαρτωλοί. Ποτέ μην βάλεις τη σκέψη αυτή και μη γίνεις βλάσφημος. Πού τους ξέρεις τους ανθρώπους;

Ένα άλλο γεγονός των ημερών εκείνων ο Χριστός, αφ' εαυτού του, τους το παρουσιάζει και τους λέγει: «Ἢ ἐκεῖνοι οἱ δέκα καὶ ὀκτώ», δεκαοχτώ άλλοι, «ἐφ’ οὓς ἔπεσεν ὁ πύργος ἐν τῷ Σιλωάμ». Πας στην εκκλησία και να πέσει το καμπαναριό να σε σκοτώσει, καταλαβαίνεις;

Αποστόλου τιμωρείται από τον Δήμαρχο; Γιατί μπορεί να το πει κανένας αυτό το πράγμα. Στον Δήμαρχο να πάρει κανένα πιστοποιητικό και δεν το έδωσε. Και τώρα που η γυναίκα του έχει χτυπηθεί από το ξύλο που έπεσε από πάνω, να πούνε ότι τον τιμώρησε ο Θεός εκεί. Εμένα δεν μου το έδωσε το πιστοποιητικό. Μπορεί να το πει και το λέμε, δυστυχώς. Είμαστε εύκολοι σε κρίση εμείς. Βγάζουμε αμέσως συμπεράσματα, δικαστές. Να με φέρετε απάνω, το κλείνουμε. Δεν είναι έτσι. Πού πρέπει να πάει ο νους μας; Ότι οι άνθρωποι αυτοί υπέφεραν ή υποφέρουν ακόμη. Μπορεί αύριο να υποφέρουμε εμείς, μπορεί να συμβεί κάτι παρακάτω. Δεν ξέρουμε τίποτα. Η δουλειά η δικιά μας είναι να είμεθα έτοιμοι, όχι να φύγουμε από προσώπου, που λένε ορισμένοι «φύγανε και γλίτωσαν». Ποιος το είπε αυτό το πράγμα; Φαντασία. Αν σε αφήνει να γλιτώσεις, σε αφήνει επί σκοπώ για να μετανοήσεις, όχι γιατί του φεύγεις. Βρήκαμε μέθοδο εμείς να του φύγουμε; Πώς να του φύγεις; Φεύγεις απ' τον Θεό;

Επάνω να γλιτώσουνε. Τόσο είναι ο σκοπός τους, όπως το επιδιώκουν. Πρέπει να βρουν χρυσό επάνω; Ξέρουν ότι δεν υπάρχει ζωή, το βλέπουν ότι δεν υπάρχει οξυγόνο, το βλέπουν όλα. Ή να πάνε να κρυφτούνε, να φύγουνε. Τόσο είναι ο σκοπός τους, ο απώτερος των μεγάλων αυτών: να φυλάξουν το κεφάλι τους. Αλλά μαγειρίζουν καταστροφή. Ο κόσμος τι θα κάνουν εδώ πέρα, που είναι άχρηστοι, που δεν μπορεί να ψήσει έναν καφέ; «Ἐὰν ἀναβῶ εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν, σὺ ἐκεῖ εἶ· ἐὰν καταβῶ εἰς τὸν ᾅδην, πάρει». Και εκεί είσαι και φυλάς τους αμαρτωλούς. «Ἐὰν ἀναλάβοιμι τὰς πτέρυγάς μου κατ’ ὄρθρον καὶ κατασκηνώσω εἰς τὰ ἔσχατα τῆς θαλάσσης, καὶ γὰρ ἐκεῖ ἡ χείρ σου ὁδηγήσει με, καὶ καθέξει με ἡ δεξιά σου». Πού να πάω, λέει, πού να φύγω; Και πού μπορεί να φύγει ο άνθρωπος από του Θεού το πρόσωπο;

Παραπέρα τώρα, όταν ο Λωτ φεύγει, ενθυμείστε, οι γαμπροί δεν ήθελαν να πάνε μαζί, πάνε χαμένοι, και προχώρησαν. Η κυρία από την περιέργεια γύρισε πίσω, έμεινε στη στήλη άλατος. Αυτός δεν μπορούσε να πάει εκεί που του είπε ο Θεός και του λέγει του Θεού: «Μη, Κύριε», του λέει, «να πάω; Επίτρεψέ με», του λέει, «να πάω σε αυτή τη μικρή πόλη, Σηγώρ», έλεγε, το υπόλοιπο. Και του λέει ο Θεός: «Πήγαινε», του λέει, «όπου έχεις να πας, να μου λύσεις τα χέρια». Ένας άνθρωπος είχε δέσει τα χέρια του Θεού και δεν μπορούσε να ενεργήσει η δικαιοσύνη του Θεού και περίμενε τον άνθρωπον αυτόν. Και πήγε στην πόλη Σηγώρ και έζησε, γλίτωσε, και η πόλη αυτή δεν κατεκάη γιατί είχε μέσα τον Λωτ. Τα καταλαβαίνετε αυτά; Τα πιάνετε; Τι θέλει να πει;
