Summary

Earthly life is brief and serves as preparation for eternal life in the new creation revealed to John the Theologian. At the resurrection, every person will face judgment, so repentance, faith in Jesus Christ, confession, and Holy Communion must shape one’s present life. Works of mercy remain necessary, but they bear saving meaning when they flow from living union with Christ and love for His brethren.

This is the fifth talk in succession that God has granted me to give to you, beloved, here in your city. I have met some of you on other evenings as well, and even in a church—during the morning service, that is. As you understand, it is difficult to maintain continuity, to keep a series of talks in order, because every day new people are added in each parish, people who did not hear the beginning. Nevertheless,

with God’s help, I will try to make what is said understandable on its own, without depending on what came before, so that it will interest both those who have already heard me and those listening for the first time.

Have you ever considered what man’s purpose is here on earth? If I said that some of us have never once thought about what I have just asked, I would not be far from the truth. Many think they came into this world simply to see God’s sun, breathe His air, and enjoy His good gifts. But that is not man’s purpose on earth. They have not paid attention to what that purpose is, and so they have fastened themselves to this earth like oysters clinging to a rock.

They have not reflected as they should, nor do they labor as they should, so as to reach their goal by making good use of the few years they spend in this world. That Kingdom will have no end, but this life will have an end. And although this life is only a flash, only a puff of steam—like when you women lift the lid from a pot and a little steam escapes—such is man’s life in this world, even if it lasts not merely nine hundred and thirty years, as Adam’s did, but nine hundred and sixty-nine, as Methuselah’s did.

Other Patriarchs of those days lived eight or nine hundred years, yet even such a life in this world is only a firefly’s flash; it is nothing compared with eternity. Perhaps man has never seriously considered this. And yet this puff of steam that is our life in this world, this brief stay of man here, has consequences in eternity. By making good use of this world and of his stay here, man can attain that other world. Man’s goal is not here. His goal is there, and his purpose on earth is

to labor and conduct his life in such a way that he may inherit that land which will have no end, the land that John saw. He tells us of it in the Apocalypse: “And I saw a new heaven”—new—“and a new earth,” a new one, “and the sea was no more.” From this, other thoughts arise that can help man reach his goal. For if a man holds a mistaken idea about his stay here and his departure from this world, he will not attain that goal. Is this true of many? I might even say all!

They believe that the grave is the end. But the grave is not the end. The grave is the beginning of another life—the life I mentioned earlier—which will have no end. If the grave were the end, we should have blown our brains out long ago, because life in this world contains nine hundred and ninety-nine tears—malice, envy, jealousy, suffering, cancer, tuberculosis—and only one smile, not laughter, just a smile. What gives man the strength to endure and struggle against all these tribulations,

against all the bitter experiences of this world, is the hope of that life beyond, which is worth every tribulation of this present life. Everything does not end at the grave. Our Christ, the Author of Life, did not leave us ignorant. We can see only as far as the grave, and that is why so many people say, “I have lost my loved one.” But was your loved one an object, a key, or a button that you could lose him? God became man, was crucified, died, was buried, rose again, ascended, and we await His return. Did He do all this so that people might simply be lost?

This too is among Satan’s devices: to drive man to despair by persuading him that there is nothing beyond the grave, that everything ends in darkness and is buried in a tomb beneath a little earth and a few slabs of marble. But it is not so. Because we cannot see beyond the grave, our Christ draws the curtain aside in the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. He says, “Come near Me, and I will show you that neither the one group nor the other perishes; they continue to exist.” So when God reveals to me that there is life beyond the grave for both the wicked and the good,

who am I to say, “I think, I imagine, there is nothing beyond. Paradise is right here, Nicholas, right here”? I think this is a terrible thing and an act of human arrogance: for man to become so insolent that he dares to correct God and say that God was mistaken. He came from there to here, returned there, and now awaits us—yet we presume to correct Him and say, “There is nothing beyond, and souls simply disappear.” Man does not disappear. Man came here to be tested, and God is not to blame for that. Man’s forefather is to blame. One couple drove us out of Paradise. There they are—those two. Not these two themselves,

but those who stand behind them. Behind our Most Holy Theotokos stands Eve, and behind our Christ stands Adam. The first two closed Paradise, while these other two—the Most Holy Theotokos as the New Eve, and Christ as the New Adam—opened Paradise. The first two are to blame. Yet in His love, Christ acted so that we could not complain to Him and say, “If I had been there, I would not have disobeyed, and none of this is my fault.” He says, “Wait. I will sacrifice Myself and create the conditions needed for you. I will restore you to the position of Adam and Eve. Now take your test, and let us see who you really are.” God, then, has not left us ignorant,

unaware of what this life is about. If he wishes, man can know what it is about and understand how things truly stand. He must therefore know that man does not come into the world in order to live. He comes in order to die, and he dies in order to live. Man is not a permanent inhabitant of the earth, as people say. Our learned men say what is false, and even our theologians say what is false. Man is a tenant on earth—a tenant, not a permanent inhabitant. He is a tenant, and one day, at some hour, he will be served notice of eviction from the house.

Nothing. Did you bring anything with you? Were you holding anything when you came? Nothing. You came and entered a dwelling made by God. You used that dwelling well or badly, and one day you are evicted from it and someone else comes in. As we once read in the cell of a monk in the wilderness of the Jordan, it was written: “My cell is mine today, another’s tomorrow, and never truly anyone’s.”

Most people do not possess this understanding of life. Consequently, they do not conduct themselves as they should, soberly and wisely, in preparation for the life to come. They live only for this life, because this is the life they can see, touch, taste, and hear.

They form the opinion that whatever cannot be perceived through the five senses does not exist. But that is not true, because no one can smell the soul, taste it, hear it, or touch it.

And yet a great many people acknowledge that the soul exists. I remember reading a story. A theologian had gone to a small town and was speaking to some people in the café where he found them. He spoke to them about the soul and its existence beyond the grave, and so forth. Among those gathered there was also the village doctor.

As the theologian was about to leave, the doctor stopped him.

Speaking to him privately, the doctor said, “Do you not think you told these people rather too much about the soul? I am a doctor, a surgeon. I have never encountered a soul inside a human being. I have never seen one, heard one, smelled one, tasted one, or…” Now the poor people thought, “A doctor is speaking,” and all the theologian’s teaching and effort seemed to collapse. The theologian stood still and offered a brief prayer within himself: “My Christ, what can I say now?” Christ granted him illumination, and he replied, “Doctor, what does your science treat? It treats pain.

Have you ever seen pain? Have you heard it, tasted it, or touched it?” The doctor answered, “No.” “Then pain does not exist, doctor. Tear up your diploma; you are not doing your job properly.” And the people’s confidence was restored. Yet today we conduct our lives as though we had no soul. Why? Have we seen it? Have we heard it? Have we tasted it? Have we touched it? At another gathering one evening, a young man who had just received his degree in philosophy invited many people of his own age, fellow students, to congratulate him. Among them was a young woman who studied theology. She was a sensible young woman who understood the matter well, and he had invited her too,

not, of course, to honor her or so that she might honor him, but so that all the other gentlemen could mock her. The invitation sent to this young woman said that she was invited, but added in parentheses at the side, “without unnecessary baggage.” Do you know what he meant by “unnecessary baggage”? No parents and no older people. They were unnecessary baggage; they were not wanted at the party. But the young woman took her elderly mother with her. Together they went to congratulate the young man and then leave, without staying for what would follow—which you know better than I do. At one point, a related discussion arose…

The discussion turned to whether or not the soul exists. Speaking almost with one voice, each appealed to his own theories—mathematical, philosophical, and so on—and declared that neither the soul nor God exists, because the five senses give us no evidence of them. How so? We cannot see Him, hear Him, touch Him, or taste Him; therefore, He does not exist. After they had all joined in the chorus that neither the soul nor God exists, but only matter, they said with studied politeness, “Now perhaps little Helen, as a theology student, will give us her view.” And all those young dandies gathered around to listen, intending to make a great spectacle of mocking the girl.

She rose and accepted the challenge. She stood before the gathering. “Everyone, listen now: Helen the backward one is going to speak.” Then she put a question to Dino. Dino was the philosophy graduate who was hosting the celebration and receiving his fellow students’ congratulations. “Well, Mr. Dino,” she said, “you reject the soul and God because you have never seen, heard, tasted, or touched them. Please tell me: have you ever seen your nous, your spiritual intellect? Have you ever held it? Have you ever smelled it? Have you ever touched it?” Then she said, “In that case, Mr. Dino, you have no nous. Good night—and my condolences.” They were speechless, absolutely speechless.

My dear friends, it seems almost ridiculous that such things should need to be discussed. And yet we live as though nothing were happening, as though there were nothing within us. Did God come and become man and sacrifice Himself for nothing—or perhaps merely to give us feast days on which to sin? That is not why He came. There is an immortal soul, and there is a God who descends even into the depths of Hades to meet that soul and raise it up from there. Blessed are those who have humility and thus give God the opportunity to grant them certainty about this truth.

You may ask why I speak this way. I have been here in your country for about twenty-two days, both here and earlier in Montreal. So far I have given about twenty-five talks of this kind. I have encountered this indifference toward the soul. Yet how much concern I have seen for money and comfortable living! I do not reject the desire to improve your life and live more comfortably, as some people put it. But unless you live according to Christ, you do not live as a true human being. Christ alone gives life its true content and enables a person to live as a human being. Many times, despite every comfort and convenience, a person lives beneath his human dignity rather than as a true human being. You yourselves must see many such things around you, and perhaps some of you weep for people you know who live this way. That is why I speak as I do.

Take care of your immortal soul, for one day you will no longer be able to hold on to it. It will be taken before a tribunal, where it will be judged accordingly. As I tell you, then, the grave is not the end; it is a beginning. The grave is also, how shall I put it, an honest and secure treasury. If you put money into your safe, no matter how many locks you use to secure it, someone may break in and steal it. Instead of finding gold, silver, and pearls inside, you may find newspapers, because the thieves have taken the valuables and put something else in their place. But whatever you give to the grave...

it will preserve. One day the graves will open, whether we want them to or not. No one will be asked. At the word of command, at the voice of the Archangel, and at the trumpet of God, the graves will open and return whatever was given to them, whatever was entrusted to their keeping. Entrust them with a dove, and they will return a dove; entrust them with a raven, and they will return a raven. Entrust them with metanoia—repentance—faith in Jesus, Holy Confession, and Holy Communion, and they will return a dove. Entrust them with unbelief, indifference, sin, every kind of licentiousness, and so forth, and they will return a raven. The graves will open, and each will give back whatever was entrusted to it.

This is a serious and important matter, one that should concern every human being. Death comes at an unexpected hour. No one knows the hour or the moment. Especially today, with modern forms of death, whole groups of people can perish at once: an airplane falls, and five hundred people are gone; no one survives.

A whole family—five or six people—may be riding together in a car, and the entire family is wiped out; not even their cat remains. People depart this life together in countless ways, and you do not know where death lies in wait. You may be driving properly on the right, while someone else comes and sweeps away your entire side of the road. A person must be ready at every moment, and this preparation costs nothing. To prepare the documents for emigrating, sitting an examination, or arranging some affair requires great effort and money, often including lawyers and notaries, so that you can secure some movable or immovable property. It takes a great deal of labor. But to secure this ticket, this passage from what is temporary into eternity, requires no expense. It requires no great labor, education, lawyers, money, or notaries. It requires only the will; a person need only desire it. For the grave will separate a person from God if, while still here, he does not choose to establish a sure relationship with God, one that cannot be altered beyond the grave.

Whether people want it or not, they will be divided into two great groups, both after death and after the Resurrection. A large proportion of people—perhaps eighty or ninety percent—believe that they will not rise again. It suits them to believe this. It is not that they do not want to rise; they do, but resurrection does not suit them because they will be judged. The person whose books are stained and whose accounts are not in order fears an audit. It is said that a missionary once spoke to a group of cannibals. When he mentioned the Resurrection, one of them leapt up as though struck by an electric shock. “Impossible!” he cried.

“The Resurrection will never happen.” “Wait a moment. Why not?” “How could it happen? It will not.” “But why? Do you have some special knowledge?” “It will not happen.” It took a great deal of effort to make him explain why. Do you know what he finally said? “Suppose the Resurrection does happen, and those whom I have eaten rise again! Woe is me!” That was precisely why he did not want the Resurrection: he remembered those he had eaten. They would stand as accusers and witnesses against him. So he did not want it. People are like this. Many reject life beyond the grave. Many reject the Resurrection and even the existence of God altogether because they persist in sin and live sinful lives. That is precisely why they do not want these things to be true.

But there are others who struggle. Even though they are sinners and even though they fall, they still make an effort. They believe in the Resurrection; they acknowledge that they are sinners and struggle each day to lessen their sinfulness, so that whenever death finds them, it may find them still struggling and less sinful than before. That is the difference. Whether we want it or not, then, we will die. Whether we want it or not, we will be separated. And whether we want it or not, at the Judgment we will again appear in two great groups. Christ has not left us uninstructed about this either. He has told us beforehand that when people rise, they will rise either as sheep or as goats. He will not place us in one group or the other; we will place ourselves there.

It will depend on the state in which the day of death finds us. To some He will say, “Come,” and to others, “Depart”—again, according to what each has chosen. It depends on the person himself. If he chooses to prepare, he will be among those to whom Christ says, “Come.” Otherwise, he will be among those to whom He says, “Depart.” But where are we to come, and where are we to go? Who will come, and who will depart? Who ever gives thought to this—the most serious matter of all? If a person fails in this world, loses the fruit of his labor, and suffers shipwreck in everything, it is nothing. But if he loses this, he has lost everything, because, as we have said, that Kingdom will have no end.

This life will have an end. Christ will come as the Judge of this world. In His effort to make these things known to us, Christ gives us something that is both a prophecy and a parable. The Gospel of the Judgment, which we read in the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew, from verse thirty-one onward, speaks prophetically: “When the Son of Man comes”; and it speaks in a parable through the sheep and the goats. Therefore, this prophecy will one day be fulfilled, and it will be fulfilled exactly as Christ said. When people hear the Gospel of the Judgment, however, they focus on five kinds of good works.

“For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in,” and so forth. I say to myself, “Glory to God. I give something to the needy, I visit someone in the hospital, and I give away a pair of shoes that does not fit me or is no longer fashionable. Why should I not go to Paradise? Is this not what Christ asks?” Sadly, even our theologians speak only about good works on that day. But the matter does not begin there. This is why we encounter people who say, “Do what I do, and then we can begin to talk.” Indeed, many among us believe that because they do good works, they will go to Paradise. They also believe they will go to Paradise simply because they are good people.

That is not the way one enters Paradise. Other, more exalted Mysteries are involved, and they come first. This does not mean that these works are unnecessary. I did not say you should be afraid to put your hand into your pocket; you should do so. I did not say you should not visit the sick or clothe someone in need. But that is not the foundation; it follows afterward. Let me put things in order for you. What does Christ say? “Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” Come, you blessed of My Father. And what does He say to the others? “Depart, you accursed.” Where are they to go? “Into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” He calls the first blessed and the others accursed. He tells the first to come

and the others to depart. Why are we told to come? Is it so that He can pay us our wages because we gave away certain things and now He owes us compensation? No. It is so that we may inherit. If a wealthy person here dies without heirs in Greece, what will we see in the newspapers? We will see a notice seeking the heir or heirs of that person. Relatives from abroad will hurry to obtain documents from municipal offices and registries, and with proof of their kinship they will come and sometimes receive millions of dollars. Why? Because they are brothers, children, or relatives. The Kingdom of Heaven, then, is inherited.

It is not payment or a reward for works. It is inherited. Show me, then, your title to the inheritance. The Kingdom belongs to God. Who inherits a kingdom? The royal children. It is not some trifle to be handed out to just anyone. When a king dies in a country, do ordinary citizens appear to claim the kingdom? No. The princes appear, those who possess what is called royal blood; they come forward to inherit the kingdom. The others receive nothing. Since Christ speaks of an inheritance, then, how can you appear merely because you gave someone a plate of food and

a pair of trousers that did not fit you—and then made the poor man publicly acknowledge the next day that you were his great benefactor and so forth? Will that bring you into the Kingdom of Heaven? Have you ever thought about this? Have you ever heard it? The Church tells us every year. We are common people—but we must become new people. This reveals the value of this church, the value of this Holy Table, the value of this artos—the blessed Bread of this Table—the value of the descent of the Holy Spirit, and the value of the clergy, through whom the Bread is changed into the Body and the wine into the Blood. They give us the Body and Blood of the King of all, so that we too may become royal children.

When a person receives Holy Communion, his body and blood are transformed. From being merely common, he becomes new. From being earthly, he becomes spiritual and eternal. From being temporary, he becomes eternal. If you have no relationship with Christ, how can you have any claim to the inheritance that belongs to the Father? How many children does this Father have? Our theologians say, and we repeat, “Everyone in the world is a child of God.” Really? Where do you find that written? Is everyone in the world a child of God? No, gentlemen. The Gospel does not say that. The Gospel says, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God.” Do you hear people saying the “Our Father”? If

God the Father were to call down from above while we solemnly recite, “Our Father, who art in heaven,” and ask, “On what grounds do you call Me Father?” what would you answer? For God to be my Father, Christ must be my Brother. If Christ is not my Brother, then God is not my Father. God has one Son, Christ. By grace we become brothers of Christ and, consequently, children of God by grace. How, then, can those who have not been baptized in Christ be brothers of Christ? How can those who merely speak Christ’s name belong to Christ? When He says, “You did it to one of the least of these My brethren,” are the Jews Christ’s brethren? Are Muslims? Are Roman Catholics? Are Zoroastrians and the rest Christ’s brethren? They are not Christ’s brethren if they do not receive Christ. How could they be His brethren? The words, “Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren,” do not refer indiscriminately to everyone. Christ’s brethren are those baptized in His name,

receiving His Body and Blood in Holy Communion. “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him; and I will raise him up on the last day.” This is kinship. Here, above the Beautiful Gate, once it is properly completed, there should normally be a vine: the Mystical Supper in the center, and on either side a vine with grapes and leaves. The branches draw their nourishment from the vine. “I am the vine; you are the branches.” If the branches do not remain in the vine, drawing and receiving its life, what will become of them? Can people who have no relationship with the Holy Chalice be children of God? And if they are not Christ’s kindred, His brethren, and therefore children of God, how can they inherit, even if they have given ten pairs of shoes, even if they have given

every good thing imaginable to their fellow human beings, since this is a matter of inheritance and they have no proof of kinship? These things are written plainly, yet they pass unnoticed, and we sleep securely, thinking that we perform good works and care for our neighbor. That is good and holy—who denies it? But first, O man, you must present your proof of kinship. You must be Christ’s brother by grace and, therefore, a child of God. Yet you must not then say, “I belong to Christ; I am baptized, so everything is fine.” No. You must also bear the corresponding fruits. You will love others, show hospitality, visit the sick, and so forth. It is from such people that Christ asks these works.

He does not ask them of just anyone who imagines that, because he has money or possesses a worldly, carnal, or self-interested love for others, he can also become an heir of the Kingdom of Heaven. The Kingdom of Heaven is not wages earned by merit. The Kingdom of Heaven is an inheritance. The Kingdom of Heaven is inherited; it is not payment for works. We are speaking, then, about Christians, not merely good people. All good people are in Hell—all good people. You may ask, “Then where are the wicked?” They too are in Hell. Who, then, is not in Hell? Christians—not Christians on paper, but Christians in deed, in deed. Beside us here we have this gate. What is it called? It is called the Beautiful Gate. Is it called the Beautiful Gate merely because it is beautiful?

It is called the Beautiful Gate because of the work that takes place here. And what takes place here? Through here people enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Behind it, if there were an apse, there would be the Most Holy Theotokos Platytera, her embrace opened wide and Christ in her arms—the new Eve in place of the old—receiving people and carrying them into the Kingdom of Heaven. Here, through the intercessions of the Theotokos, Christ saves us all. Is that not what we say? “Save us, O Son of God, through the intercessions of the Theotokos.” “Save us.” The Most Holy Theotokos intercedes, and Christ saves. A person comes forward here, and the priest says, “The servant of God receives...

the Body and Blood of Christ, for the remission of sins and eternal life.” Those who receive Holy Communion here enter into communion with Christ. The two become one flesh; they become of one blood and one body with Christ. When the receiving of the Holy Gifts is finished, the priest raises the chalice, turns toward the people, and says, “Save, O God, Your people, and bless Your inheritance.” Who are Your inheritance? Those who received Holy Communion—not those who merely sat there, then came to receive antidoron afterward and scattered its crumbs over their heads, only for the crumbs to fall to the ground and be trampled underfoot. Such things are absurd. “Save, O God, Your people.”

“And bless Your inheritance.” Who are Your inheritance? Those who ate the Body and drank the Blood of Christ, Christ’s brethren. “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him; and I will raise him up on the last day.” Tell me: of the thousand people who enter the Church, how many receive Holy Communion every Sunday, and how many receive worthily? Ten people? Where are the other nine hundred and ninety? Will they all remain outside for this reason? It is not enough simply to say, “I am an Orthodox Christian.” I must also live accordingly. That is why it is called the Beautiful Gate. Those who meet Christ here will be led by Christ into the Kingdom of Heaven. This is the entrance. The barrier that turns a person back is this iconostasis, you know.

The sin of Adam and Eve erected it and shut us outside. When Christ came, the veil was torn open from top to bottom. Yet we have closed it again, because we do not come forward to enter into communion. And so the priest says a series of things that, for us, are untrue: “We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit.” Untrue—because they received no share in these things. Everyone else presents himself, though neither priest, chanters, nor choir have received: “Arise! Having received the Holy Gifts...” Yet no one has received Holy Communion. Since this is the work the Church performs, since this chalice is offered here, how can a person who does not enter into communion here possibly be saved? He cannot be saved. That is why it is called the Beautiful Gate. This is where a person must pass through. Yet we place sin in the way again and wait merely to receive the antidoron. What is antidoron?

Take it in your hand, and let us have a little conversation with it. “What is your name?” “My name is antidoron.” “What does that mean?” “It means I am given instead of the Gift; I am not the Gift.” “Very well, then where is the Gift?” “Inside the Holy Chalice.” “Then let him go and receive it.” “What are you?” “I am a blessing.” “And what is that?” “That is the Gift. That is salvation, for the remission of sins and eternal life. It is the entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven.” “And what are you?” “A blessing of the Lord. I am waiting for you to repent, go to Holy Confession, change your life, and come to receive Christ’s Body in Holy Communion, so that you may be saved.” Do you know these things or not?

The antidoron represents the womb of the Theotokos. Through it, people receive a blessing from the Theotokos. The Gift is the One whom the Theotokos bore: Christ, marked with the letters IC, received for the remission of sins. A small blessing is given here so that a person’s contact with the Church may not be broken altogether. But that does not mean there is salvation in it. You are not saved merely by eating a small piece. Christ saves; the Theotokos intercedes. “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.” These things are necessary for every human being, because, whether we wish it or not, we will depart from this world. There is no other way for us to pass on. From this a person can understand the value of the Church, the value of the Mysteries, and the necessity

and value of the clergy. For neither I, as a layman, nor you can change the bread into the Body and the wine into the Blood. Read the prayers five hundred times and you will accomplish nothing. That sinful priest is needed—for we have spared no one, calling everyone sinful, ourselves included. He is needed, and through him this mercy is still bestowed upon humanity today, though a person cannot fully comprehend what Christ is for all mankind. A person, then, is not saved through works, but through life, and life exists in Christ. That is why it is called the Cup of Life.

That is why His tomb is called Life-giving, why His Cross is called Life-giving, and why His side is called Life-giving: because from it flowed blood and water—Baptism and Holy Communion. Apart from these, there is no salvation for the Christian. Let him do whatever he wishes and build whatever he wishes. Let me give you one definition, you who perform works and then sleep without concern, thinking you will be saved: Christ is not an employer; He is the Giver of Life. Let me say it once more. Christ is not an employer who pays people wages for the good works they have done. He is the Giver of Life. Someone may ask:

“Then what becomes of good works?” Good works do not create an entrance into Paradise; they create places within Paradise. A place in Paradise is one thing, and entrance into Paradise is another. Have you never owned an apartment that you paid for dearly with your own labor, yet because you did not have the key with you, you had to sit outside in the bitter wind? That is how it is. A person’s good works prepare a place for him in Paradise, but not an entrance. The entrance is here: through Jesus Christ and through the Holy Chalice, with metanoia, Holy Confession, and Holy Communion for the baptized Christian. For the unbaptized person,

there is Baptism and Holy Communion, and for the sins committed after Baptism, Holy Confession. If a person is baptized as an adult, Baptism cleanses all his sins; he does not need to confess sins committed before it. Holy Confession is for sins committed after Baptism, because there is no second Baptism. As Saint Gregory of Nyssa says, even a single falling tear is equal to a cleansing bath. A person’s works, then, are his luggage, while the Body and Blood of Christ are his ticket. If you take luggage with you to travel, they will say, “Your ticket, please.” “But I have luggage.” “Yes, but your ticket, so that you and your luggage may board.”

This is the practical side of a person’s salvation and return to Paradise, from which our first ancestors departed. Every day a person asks for this; even at the final moment, as he is being buried, he asks it through the mouths of the chanters: “Grant me the homeland for which I long, making me once again a citizen of Paradise.” The funeral service is the greatest philosophy, the greatest theology, and the greatest sacred poetry, because it reminds us that the human person must return to Paradise. Yet if he does not make use of the things I have told you, it is impossible for him to return to Paradise. The ticket of Jesus bears

His signature and a seal in red ink. The signature is placed in the confessional, through the priest—not before the icons, not amid forty waves, not by the Most Holy Theotokos, nor by anyone else. None of these forgives sins. “Forgive me, Most Holy Theotokos.” “How can I forgive you? Go to the priest so that he may absolve you.” “Forgive me, my Christ.” “Go to My priest so that he may absolve you.” Christ forgives because He is God, but He forgives through the clergy. He has given this authority to them and to no one else. The ticket must therefore bear the signature and the seal of Jesus in red ink, placed here, so that the person may travel. Such tickets are issued only by the Orthodox Church and by no other church. You may ask why. Because no other so-called church possesses the Sacrifice.

A church without the Sacrifice is not the Church. The Protestants are without the Lamb, while the Catholics use wafers baked in an oven. They too have no Sacrifice. If you die a Catholic, there is no memorial service, no prosphoron, nothing. You go like a stray dog through lands belonging to passersby. Only the Orthodox Church possesses the Sacrifice. She changes the wine into the Blood, and it is the Blood of Jesus Christ that cleanses us from every sin. If you and your loved ones aspire to return to Paradise, you must follow this path. Appreciate the love of Christ, who, despite our sin, still preserves for us these spiritual oases—the churches—and who has given people the courage and strength to endure every insult, even those coming from the Orthodox themselves.

He has given this strength to the clergy, because if I were a clergyman, I would cast everything aside and leave. I would cast it all aside and leave. And when the clergyman is gone, then you will understand what the Orthodox Church and an Orthodox clergyman mean. Even when we die and pass beyond the grave, if there is no one to sing over us, “Blessed is the way,” no one to read the Trisagion for us, no one to remove a particle for us and place it into the Blood of the Lamb, saying, “Wash away, by Your precious Blood, the sins of these Your servants,” then we will understand the crime we committed and how disastrously we closed our record for eternity. Please forgive me for the tone and manner in which I have spoken to you. If you think what I have told you is necessary, keep it. If you think it is not necessary, leave it. Yet from my little experience, I wish to believe

that these things are useful and necessary for us all. With humility, give thanks to God, who in His providence has arranged all that He has arranged for you today. Pray that these churches may remain, because we are Greeks and have a great calling in the world. When this approaching cloud—the wrath of God—has passed, destroying and cleansing every kind of sin found even among us Orthodox, then you will understand their value. Leo the Wise says somewhere, “The Prophet Elijah will soon come,” and continues: “Those who have committed the deeds of Sodom and Gomorrah he will punish most severely; he will drive the wicked priests from the sanctuary and restore the worthy.” Before long he will come and cleanse us as well, cleansing the homes in which every kind of sin is found, and he will cleanse the Church.

If there is metanoia—repentance—we can avert all these things.

των πικρών περιπτώσεων του κόσμου τούτου, είναι η ελπίς της ζωής εκεί, που αξίζει οποιαδήποτε θλίψη της ζωής αυτής. Δεν τελειώνει η υπόθεση στον τάφο. Ο Χριστός μας, ο Αρχηγός της Ζωής, δεν μας άφησε αμύητους. Εμείς βλέπουμε πάντοτε μέχρι του τάφου, γι' αυτό και πολλοί εκφράζονται: «Έχασα εγώ τον άνθρωπό μου». Μα αντικείμενο ήταν, κλειδί ήταν ο άνθρωπός σου, κουμπί ήταν ο άνθρωπός σου, που τον έχασες; Ένας Θεός έγινε άνθρωπος, εσταυρώθη, πέθανε, ετάφη, ανέστη, ανελήφθη και τον περιμένουμε να ξανάρθει. Για να χάνονται οι άνθρωποι;

Όχι από τον καθένα που νομίζουν οι άνθρωποι ότι έχουν χρήματα ή έχουν αγάπη κοσμική ή σαρκική ή συμφεροντολογική προς τους ανθρώπους, μπορούν να γίνουν και κληρονόμοι της Βασιλείας των Ουρανών. Η Βασιλεία των Ουρανών δεν είναι αξιομισθία. Η Βασιλεία των Ουρανών είναι κληρονομία. Κληρονομείται η Βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Δεν είναι αξιομισθία η Βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Πρόκειται λοιπόν περί χριστιανών και όχι περί καλών ανθρώπων. Όλοι οι καλοί άνθρωποι είναι στην κόλαση. Όλοι οι καλοί άνθρωποι. Θα μου πεις, οι κακοί πού είναι; Και αυτοί στην κόλαση. Τότε ποιοι δεν είναι στην κόλαση; Οι χριστιανοί. Όχι στα χαρτιά, στην πράξη, στην πράξη. Έχουμε εδώ δίπλα, πώς λέγεται αυτή η πύλη εδώ; Λέγεται Ωραία Πύλη. Λέγεται Ωραία Πύλη γιατί είναι όμορφη;

Η αμαρτία του Αδάμ και της Εύας το έβαλε και μας έκλεισε έξω εμάς. Και όταν ήρθε ο Χριστός, το καταπέτασμα άνοιξε από τα πάνω μέχρι κάτω. Και εμείς ξανατοκλείσαμε, διότι δεν προσερχόμεθα να επικοινωνήσουμε. Και λέει μια σειρά ψέματα ο ιερεύς: «Εἴδομεν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινόν, ἐλάβομεν Πνεῦμα ἐπουράνιον». Ψέματα. Διότι ήταν άμοιροι. Παρουσιάζεται όλος ο άλλος κόσμος, ούτε ιερεύς, ούτε ψάλτες, ούτε ο χορός. «Ὀρθοί, μεταλαβόντες». Κανένας δεν έχει κοινωνήσει. Πώς είναι δυνατό λοιπόν ο άνθρωπος, εφόσον αυτό λειτουργεί η Εκκλησία, αυτό το ποτήριο εδώ λειτουργεί και ο άνθρωπος δεν επικοινωνεί εδώ, πώς είναι δυνατό να σωθεί; Δεν μπορεί να σωθεί. Γι' αυτό λέγεται Ωραία Πύλη. Από εδώ θα περάσει και ο άνθρωπος. Και εμείς βάζουμε την αμαρτία ξανά στη μέση και περιμένουμε να πάρουμε το αντίδωρο. Τι είναι το αντίδωρο;

Πάρ' το στο χέρι σου και κάνουμε λίγη κουβέντα. Πώς σε λένε; Με λένε αντίδωρο. Δηλαδή; Είπα να πεις, δεν είμαι το δώρο. Καλά, το δώρο πού είναι; Στο Άγιο Ποτήριο μέσα. Τι, να πάει να το πάρει. Τι είσαι εσύ; Εγώ είμαι ευλογία. Εκείνο τι είναι; Το δώρο. Εκείνο είναι σωτηρία, εις άφεσιν αμαρτιών και ζωήν την αιώνιον. Είναι είσοδος για τη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Εσύ τι είσαι; Ευλογία Κυρίου. Σε περιμένω να μετανοήσεις, να εξομολογηθείς, να αλλάξεις ζωή και να έρθεις να κοινωνήσεις το σώμα, για να σωθείς. Ξέρετε ή δεν τα ξέρετε αυτά;

Γι' αυτό ο τάφος του λέγεται Ζωηφόρος, γι' αυτό ο Σταυρός του λέγεται Ζωηφόρος, γι' αυτό η πλευρά του λέγεται Ζωηφόρος, διότι έβγαλε αίμα και ύδωρ, βάπτισμα και Θεία Κοινωνία. Εκτός αυτών σωτηρία δεν υπάρχει για τον Χριστιανό. Ας κάνει ό,τι θέλει, ας φτιάξει ό,τι θέλει. Έναν ορισμό να σας δίδω: εσείς που κάνετε τα έργα και κοιμόσαστε ξένοιαστοι, θα σωθείτε; Ότι ο Χριστός δεν είναι εργοδότης, είναι ζωοδότης. Το πω άλλη μια φορά: ο Χριστός δεν είναι εργοδότης να πληρώσει τα μεροκάματα που κάμανε οι άνθρωποι, καλά έργα, αλλά είναι ζωοδότης. Θα πει κανείς;
