Summary
Interpreting Matthew 22:1–14, the lecture presents the royal wedding feast as God the Father’s invitation to the Kingdom through His Son, the Bridegroom, whose bride is the Church and each faithful soul. Those who neglect the invitation for work, possessions, or ordinary concerns reveal a deadly spiritual indifference: material life must remain subordinate to worship, repentance, and the freely offered call to salvation. The wedding garment is the grace received in Baptism; although sin stains it, confession and repentance can cleanse and restore it, while merely outward religious appearance cannot replace an inward life united to Christ.

Those of you who were with us for our last talk will remember that we spoke about a parable—specifically, the so-called Parable of the Ten Thousand Talents.
I said then that Christ often spoke to us through human relationships, through human life in general, and through the material things around us, so that He might lead us to the spiritual truths He wishes to teach—truths that, in this practical way, we can understand more easily. I do not know whether you have ever sat down and read Holy Scripture dispassionately, but Christ told very many parables, and besides their moral teaching, they often contain doctrinal teaching as well.
On Thursday we did not have a talk because it was the feast—the Vespers of the Three Hierarchs—and this institution was celebrating its patronal feast. But tonight, by way of continuation, I would like to speak about another parable, one that is equally serious and instructive. It is called the Parable of the Royal Wedding Feast.
You know, a wedding is a milestone, as we were saying, in human life. We might call it the most joyful event among all the occasions in a person’s life, because it brings such great joy and creates
an organic bond between two persons who until then were strangers and had no concern for one another. Christ uses this to show how close the relationship is between bridegroom and bride. Here, Christ is the Bridegroom and the human soul is the bride—or, more generally, as the Apocalypse says, the Church, which is again a gathering of souls who have Christ as their Bridegroom. That is why this parable is called the Parable of the Royal Wedding Feast. Matthew, more than any other Evangelist, records the greatest number of parables. He includes this one in his twenty-second chapter.
It begins with the first verse and reads as follows: “Jesus again spoke to them in parables: ‘The Kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a king who arranged a wedding feast for his son.’” Clearly, this is God arranging a wedding feast for His Son. “And he sent his servants to summon those who had been invited to the wedding, but they would not come.” Clearly, he sends people to call them. If we look closely, we will find three missions here.
In another, parallel parable that we could consider—the Parable of the Great Banquet, which we hear on the Sunday of the Forefathers before Christmas—there are likewise three calls. Three times the master sent his servants, and we ring the bells three times, calling the servants to come and sit at the banquet. All these things, of course, have their symbolic meaning. They help us understand, at least roughly, where our customs derive their force and where the things presented by the Church have their foundation. In any case, “they would not come.”
Am I obliged to go?
No. If you do not wish to go, then do not. You are invited. All people are invited, and the baptized above all. They have entered a little farther within. They are also inscribed in another, distinct book. They are written not only in the book of humanity, but also in the Book of Life. I do not know whether you have ever read in the Apocalypse about the General Judgment: “And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life.” Those who are baptized are inscribed in the Book of Life. Indeed, this is recalled in the prayer that is read—if it is still read—
at the naming of a child. There is a service that is no longer celebrated today. On the eighth day, the child is brought to the Church to receive its name. In one of the prayers, we ask God to preserve the child alive until the mother has been purified and completed her forty days, so that she may attend her child’s Mystery and the child may be inscribed in the Book of Life. In any case, “they would not come.” I want us to understand that God compels no one. Yet He has given every human being the ability to put egoism aside and acknowledge that someone is the architect both of his own being and of this entire creation. God does not coerce the human will or violate human freedom. A person’s salvation is born where the two wills—God’s will and the human will—come together. From that point, a person’s salvation begins. God always desires that all should be saved and “come to the knowledge of the truth.” But the human person must desire it too. If a person does not desire it, he can receive no good thing and can expect nothing concerning his salvation. God does not compel him. He waits for him, creates the right conditions for him, and sets both red lights and green lights before him; the person is free to choose which way to follow. This is expressed beautifully in the Wisdom of Sirach, for those of you who read it, in the final verses of chapter fifteen: “I have set before you fire and water;
if you wish, stretch out your hand.”
God does not assist you toward your destruction; but if you are unwilling, neither does He save you by force. It rests in the hands of the human person. If he wishes, he is saved; if he wishes, he is lost. Only in this way can God judge him on that day. Otherwise, if God saved him by force, he would say, “I did not want to be saved”; or, if God did not save him, he would say, “He did not want to save me.” No. The parable says, “They would not come.” Let us continue. “Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited’”—go and tell them—“‘Behold, I have prepared my banquet; my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.’” Come! Why do you not wish to come? Will you have to pay anything? Will it cost you anything? Will it require any labor from you? Everything is ready. We have laid it all out for you!
Then, it says, “they paid no attention and went away.” They did not go either. What follows has roughly the same meaning as the Parable of the Great Banquet, which I mentioned earlier. I said before that a wedding is a milestone, as we say, in a person’s life. Yet many times we are invited and do not go. We may not even attend the wedding of someone dear to us. You may ask, why do we not go? Attending a wedding involves expense, and often our finances do not allow us to go.
If the old customs were still observed—the customs that remain in the villages of our homeland, though here we have let them fade, so that now a telephone call or a telegram is all we offer—then, if someone wished to attend the wedding of a cousin, a niece, a close relative, or whoever it might be,
he would first have to send ahead an animal for slaughter. He would have to send a large loaf of bread, the appropriate amount of wine, and so forth, quite apart from any other gifts that might be needed and were often expected, especially when the young couple was poor and setting up their home for the first time.
Everyone would contribute something to help them obtain what they could not provide by themselves, or what would otherwise take them a very long time
and a great many resources to acquire—the necessities for their home. So, as I say, attending can often present a difficulty. Shall I go empty-handed? How could I? I would be ashamed. And so we find various excuses: we are ill, we are in mourning, we have to travel, and so on and so forth—and we do not attend the wedding. Or, if we do go, we go with our heads bowed low, because we may even have to sign a promissory note to buy something to send as a gift. But this wedding, the spiritual wedding, requires no such material expense. He says, “Go and tell those who do not wish to come that my banquet, my table, is ready. My oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered. Everything is ready. You need only come. Nothing else is required.” Yet even today the human person does not come, because—I trust you know this—a person contributes nothing
to his salvation except his own willingness and his sins. Nothing else is required. Yet the human person does not surrender that willingness, which is bound up with his ego; and consequently, he does not surrender the burden of his sins either. There is a beautiful illustration of this. If you visit holy monasteries, and more particularly the Holy Mountain, where monasticism is truly lived in its proper form, and enter the monastery refectory, you will find places set and tables laid for two hundred, three hundred, four hundred, one hundred and fifty, or one hundred people, depending on the number of clergy and laity present for the feast.
The tables stretch along the room, arranged in the form of a cross, and so forth. When the bell rings, the door opens, and the people enter, each person goes and sits before a place setting where everything has already been provided. No one says, “Throw me a fork,” or, “Waiter, bring me a knife,” or, “Send over some bread.” Nothing of the sort. Everything is there: the proper food, a complete place setting, and whatever else is needed—a fork, a knife, and so on. There is the proper amount of wine, water, bread, seasonings, and the rest. The fruit and dessert are there too, whatever the monastery has and is able to offer. You simply sit down. You have nothing to ask for; you merely take your place. You do not need to bring anything of your own,
nor do you need to open an extra tin of food or do anything else. Three hundred, four hundred, five hundred, one hundred, or two hundred people—however many there may be—all sit down at their places without carrying anything in their hands. Now let us transfer this image to the spiritual realm: if human beings can provide such service and create such ease,
How much more, then, is everything provided at that spiritual table of God! Nothing can pay for it, nothing can influence it, and it lacks nothing. What can a person offer? What did I offer when I returned to God? My filth and my willingness—nothing else. And if I remain with Him, what do I offer to remain there? My filth and my willingness—nothing else. Do I do anything good? It belongs to Him. Does a lamp give light? The light comes from the electricity; it is not the lamp's own.
Does a person speak? How does he speak? God enables him to speak. Nothing is our own. Otherwise, we imagine that we are something, that we are worthy, and that God will save us because we do good or accomplish this or that. No. Salvation is a free gift; it costs us nothing. These words, then, contain a great deal of meaning. Let each person consider why he has no relationship with Christ, and he will discover that his ego and his sins will not let him. That is the heart of the matter. Whenever a person enters into sin, he puts up a screen between himself and God and refuses all communication. That screen must be removed before communion can be restored. This is why the first thing the Cross of Christ did was tear the veil: “The veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.” What does that have to do with the Crucifixion? Christ is crucified on Golgotha, outside Jerusalem.
Why, then, when Christ said, “It is finished” upon the Cross, was the veil in Solomon's Temple torn? What was the connection? That veil represented the sin which man had placed between himself and God, cutting off communion with Him. The Crucifixion of Christ and the blood of Christ opened the way again. This is why we now have what is called the Beautiful Gate. It is beautiful because through it man enters once more and goes toward Paradise. Reconciliation takes place before the Beautiful Gate at the words, “With fear of God...” There the faithful come into contact with Christ. Christ sanctifies them, transforms them, and brings them in, while the priest says, “Save, O God, Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance.” Who are His people? Those who have entered into communion, who have received Holy Communion with Christ. They are His people and His inheritance, and through that gate they enter. Christ opened this door. Whenever you see the Beautiful Gate, know that it is the door Christ opened with His blood on Golgotha.
Someone once asked, “How wide was this door broken open? How great was the opening?” Another answered, “It became wide enough for the greatest sinner in the world to pass through.” That is how wide it is. It was not made only for certain slender people who can squeeze through. Even the greatest sinner in the world can pass through it. There is the mercy of God. Everything is provided there. You need nothing. You need no wallet. You need no clever schemes. You need nothing at all. “Go,” He says, “and tell them that everything is ready. I have prepared My table,” which, as you know, He sets before us at every—
—every day and every moment. Yet most of us do not go, offering one excuse after another. In any case, the Gospel says, “But they made light of it and went their ways.” They were negligent. You know how a person says, “I am terribly negligent,” and leaves undone things he could have attended to—things that could have benefited him, but whose neglect instead harms him. Negligence, you see, is a deadly sin. And if negligence in material affairs, conduct, and human relationships can be deadly, how much more serious it is to neglect your salvation: the bells are ringing, and you curse the priest for disturbing you because you came home that morning from the card table, from an illicit embrace, or from a life of corruption.
The semantron sounds and tells you, “Come inside. Enter the Ark, because outside there is a flood,” and you even curse it. That is indefensible; it is not reasonable. Of course, there are also people who are completely swept away by material concerns. The passage says: “But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business.”
“And the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.” All this is drawn from human life. As you know, when Satan has a person in his grasp, he continually provides different excuses—and those of us who have escaped him can understand this. Suddenly, you see, the washing simply must be done on Sunday morning.
Do you do the washing on Sunday afternoon? Why not do it then? Why must you do it on Sunday morning, precisely when you should go to Church? Why do you act this way? Can you not see how Satan sets the trap? On a feast day, a person will not take the morning off to go to Church, but he will take the afternoon off to receive deceivers in his home. And on Sunday, supposedly, we must go to the shop, and here, and there, and so on. Yes.
Know this: as long as you do not go first to Christ, you will always be in need. Peter said to Christ, “All night long—all night long—we fished and caught nothing; we did not catch so much as a scale. Nevertheless, at Your word I will let down the net.” So he let down the nets at midday, beneath the blazing sun, while those watching from shore must have mocked him: “What has happened to old Peter? He let this deceiver into his boat, and now the man has told him to cast the nets at midday! Are fish caught at midday? Of course not—especially when there has been moonlight.” Yet he caught enough fish to fill two boats. “Nevertheless, at Your word I will let down the net,” Peter said. But with our human reasoning, we shut Christ out. And when Christ is absent—
—from the home, from our finances, from the family, from the marriage bed, from our work, from the table, and from everything else, expect nothing. Everything will go wrong, and everything will become difficult. Christ must enter first. There was a friend of mine from Renti who had bought a taxi. I had been speaking at the Church of the Annunciation in Piraeus, and he and another friend came and drove me back to Athens that evening. As we talked along the way, I asked him, “How are things? Are you managing?” He answered, “What can I do? I have to work.” “Do you go to Church?” “I cannot go now.” “Why can you not?” I asked. “You know,” he said, “there are payments to make, the car is new, and there are other expenses.”
It was Satan's usual excuse: necessity and work. Here in the parable, one man was sent off to his business and another to his field—to work. “How else will we live? We are in difficult circumstances; times are hard.” I told him, “I do not agree with you. How much do you earn when you work on Sunday?” “Eight hundred drachmas,” he said; that was what he earned then. I told him, “You will earn fifteen hundred, perhaps eighteen hundred, if you first go to Church in the morning with your family, return home, eat breakfast, and then go out to work. You will earn that much. If you do not, I will make up the difference. If you earn five hundred, I will give you another thousand so that you reach fifteen hundred. Whatever you lack, I will pay you.” We discussed it all the way until they dropped me off in Pangrati. He took my words seriously.
The following Sunday he wrestled with himself: should he go out to work or not? At last he overcame the temptation, took his family, and went to Church. After Church, he returned home, ate breakfast, drove some people home, and then began work. Do you know how he described the day to me? “I became like a football,” he said. “One moment they sent me to one corner, the next moment somewhere else; then out of bounds, then for a corner kick.” He earned eighteen hundred drachmas that day. From then on, that excuse was finished. Now the clever ones will say, “But if every taxi driver did that, what would happen? Who would serve us in the morning when we need them?” If only they would all do it! Let us endure the inconvenience. But the truth is, they do not all do it.
Let them do it. I am simply giving you an example. Satan is very crafty. He tells us that we do not have enough. He tells us we must keep working and doing more. Yet what strange thing has happened in our country? Do we not say that we are poor and have no money? When someone is poor and has no money, he usually tries to find some extra work, to work another hour or do some overtime, as foreigners call it, so that he can earn something more and meet his needs. Yet we have adopted a five-day working week. Instead of increasing our work to cover our needs, we quarrel so that we can work even less. Is it so that we may regain our strength? No, but so that we can squander what we earned during the first days of the week. When a person sits idle, he spends money. Do you know what the weekend costs now? A whole week's wages, and sometimes more.
These are the very people described here. The Gospel has eternal validity. It is not something that applied only in those days; it applies today and will continue to apply throughout all time, until the end of the age. These things will continue to happen, repeating what we hear in this passage. Satan is the craftsman behind them. God has given man 168 hours each week, yet not even one hour can be spared for Christ. Not one hour can be spared for Christ. According to a recent statistic, only three percent attend Church: three out of every hundred, while ninety-seven remain outside. There are entire neighborhoods without a single regular worshipper. Go to the Church of the Ascension in Pangrati—
—a district of I do not know how many thousands—and it is doubtful whether you will find even ten local people who have any connection with the parish. The others, if they attend at all, come from elsewhere. Imagine what happens in other districts. There are three million of us here now. The churches ought to be overflowing, yet they remain empty. We ought to be building additional halls. Our homes, numerous as they are, cannot contain all of us; how could the churches contain us? From this you can understand what is happening and how people think today. The greatest miracle is that God still puts up with us, still makes the sun rise, still sends rain, still gives us oxygen, and so on. Now, of course, all these things around us are threatening us. God has taken up the rod and is seeking to bring us back, yet we still run away from Him. We do not want Him. We claim that we are taking measures against the threatening cloud. Have we no shame? He need only say—
—“Enough,” and let it cover us all, and we are gone. We will perish like mice; we will be scattered like flour. Yet man still resists. We do not want to come to metanoia, to repentance; we do not want to return. Consider how grave that alone is. In any case, the people in the parable did not say that they rejected him; they simply neglected the invitation. They are not the Antichrist. If you tell a person, “You are the Antichrist,” he will say, “Me? No, thank you! Come to my house and see how many icons we have. Come and see my mother censing the house. We celebrate Pascha. At Theophany we take home blessed water from outside the church. Us?” Yet this negligence has already condemned many people. I pray that no one among us who is listening now, or who may listen in the future, suffers from such negligence. And yet negligence is deadly.
Procrastination says, “I will do it later.” Yes, that is how it is, but these habits must go. We must assess things rightly and put them in their proper order: spiritual things first, and material things afterward; the spiritual table first, and the material table afterward. Earlier I compared this with the refectory on the Holy Mountain, where you see both realities together, the spiritual and the material. To show their proper order, the material table stands opposite the spiritual one. If you enter the monastery church and look straight ahead from the Holy Table, you will see the other table opposite it. The buildings form the arms of a cross, and at the far end—
—you will find the abbot seated with those who assist him, and the monks seated on either side. Leaving the spiritual table in formal procession, with processional fans and chanting, they go to the material table. When the meal is finished, they return with chanting to the spiritual table, say the dismissal, remove their vestments, and then depart. One table presupposes the other, and both fulfill their purpose; but God established them both. Some labor may be needed to bring the material provisions to one table, but the other asks nothing of us. It is easy for a person to be saved and difficult for him to condemn himself to Hell. John Chrysostom, in his interpretation—
—of Christ's descent into Hades, describes how Christ went down and shattered the locks of that prison, that is, of Hades. Then he says, “Look at how much effort is required now. There are no keys anymore and no doors. A person must be very wicked indeed to gather all the nails and everything else Christ tore away, rebuild the doors, fit new locks, go inside, and lock himself in. See how completely Christ destroyed them!” It is not easy for a person to condemn himself to Hell, because one act of metanoia—of repentance—can settle the account of his entire life. It is therefore difficult and exhausting for a person to condemn himself to Hell, and easy for him to be saved.
Look closely at those who have no relationship with Christ, who have no connection with this table, and who do not acknowledge Him as the Bridegroom of their souls. See how weary they are. It is visible first of all in their outward appearance. Look at how withered they are, like cabbages scorched by frost.
This whole world of sin, the whole world of the night, the whole world of the flesh, the whole world out there in corruption, is withered. Compare it, if you will, with someone who goes to bed early and rises early, goes to work, returns home, and lives a disciplined life. He does not suffer as many illnesses as the other man, nor as many fears, accidents, or crimes.
Compare this with the religious world and with Christians. Make the comparisons; look at the statistics and see what is happening. And yet people cannot understand it. Sweden today is the classic example. Everyone envies its money, prosperity, social provision, and so forth. But are there more suicides anywhere than in Sweden today, especially among young people? Therefore, Christ alone can fill a person, give meaning to his life, and give him the strength to endure even the strangest trials.
And yet we do not want Christ. And you know, those who do not establish a relationship with Him at this table here below will not be with Him at the table above either. When He said, “We shall drink it new in the Kingdom of Heaven,” those who made no effort here below to prepare for what is above will have no share in it. In any case, the result was that they not only refused to come, but, as He says, they insulted Him and killed Him. He Himself is the bridegroom; He Himself is the Bridegroom, Christ.
Some of those people, if you remember,
were told to come, because everything there too was ready. And they said that one had bought oxen and was going to try them, another had bought a field, and another was newly married. They found various excuses. And here He repeats it. You should know that this repetition leaves us even more without excuse. “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.’” Before this, the king “was angry, and he sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.” This refers to what happened to Jerusalem and to the Jews who killed the Bridegroom. And you know what Jerusalem suffered at the hands of Titus in AD 70. About one million one hundred thousand people perished. The city was ploughed under, and the Temple was destroyed; nothing remained. In any case, there were three groups of messengers. First, the prophets. Second, the Apostles, while Christ was still in the world.
He sent out both the Twelve and the Seventy, two by two. And you know how they were often treated. On one occasion they were driven away with blows and kicks, and John, together with Peter and James, asked Christ to allow them to call down fire from Heaven and burn those people up, as happened in the days of Elijah. But Christ did not permit it, saying that we are not of that spirit. We did not come to burn people up and fill Hell an hour sooner. We came to tell them once, twice, five times, ten times, a hundred times, in the hope that someone might be willing to understand and return. That is the spirit we are of. Yet here there came to pass what they themselves had said without realizing it, if you read Matthew: “His blood be upon us”
“and upon our children.” Sadly, that is what would happen, and that is what did happen. Historians even report that there was not enough wood to make crosses for all those who were to be crucified. They crucified one Man, and then so many of them were crucified. They nailed them to the wall as a tanner stretches and nails up animal hides. That is how they were nailed. They crucified one Man, and how many of them were crucified then! In any case, the people were not benefited. Then he said to his servants, “The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.”
“Go, therefore, to the crossroads.” Go out. Go out.
“Invite to the wedding as many as you find. And those servants went out”—this refers to the time after Christ—“and gathered everyone they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was filled with guests.” The evil were those who had been outside Christ, outside the true God. Yet they believed and entered. Among them there were also good people. They knew nothing about God and did not know Christ, but they were good people. Take Cornelius, for example: he gave many alms, prayed continually, prayed for three days without ceasing, and fasted for three days. Yet he had no relationship with Christ.
He had no relationship with the Gospel and had not yet heard anything about it. There you have a good man in the midst of the world of the evil. And there were other evil people who heard, came, and also entered; as you know, they all went in. When Holy Scripture says, “When the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who was not wearing a wedding garment,” it does not say that he found an evil man. No. Evil people entered when they changed their way of thinking, and good people entered when they changed their way of thinking. For even a good man cannot enter simply because he is good. Do you grasp this? You can understand it from the example of Cornelius, that very good man whom I mentioned to you. His goodness rose so high that the angel said to him,
“Your prayers, your alms, and your fasts have risen before the throne of God.” Well, that is what I too would want—to have them reach God. But even though they reached Him, you are not saved by them. Send for Peter, who is staying with Simon the tanner by the sea, and have him come and tell you what you must do. These things do not save you. You are a good man, but you are not yet a Christian. And so he sent for him. Exactly: these things do not save you. You know that there are people like this among us, who do good works, build things, and so forth. But if you do not do the will of God, what use is it to me that you do and build all these things? The other day, in another talk I gave, I related something that happened to me with a woman doctor. She was a respectable, well-presented woman. She received antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after the Liturgy.
Her husband was also a doctor and a good man, and we spoke together. The conversation happened to turn to religious matters, and she repeated that worn-out saying: what we need is good human beings. “No,” I said, “we do not merely need human beings; we need Christians. There are many human beings, but not many Christians.” She stood there looking at me. I said, “Why are you looking at me?” She replied, “Do you mean that I, because I do not have much connection with the Church and such things—though I do not want to tell you all the good I do—am not a Christian?” I said, “I know what you do. Your name is well known in society. Many people come here, and you examine them free of charge; perhaps you even give them money to buy their medicine.” “Exactly,” she said. That was what she was relying on,
and on that basis she maintained that she was indeed a Christian. I said, “You are not one yet, because you are striving in a place where God did not put you.” “Is it not good?” she asked. “It is not the Good itself, though it is a good thing. Where are your children?” I said. “Why do you not have children? Why do you avoid having them? Your talent lies there; that is where God placed you. You were called to labor in motherhood. He did not place you here merely to become a professional and do good works. I want you to do that good for your children, whom you are now casting aside.” She looked as though she might die. Her face changed, she went pale, broke into a sweat, and was genuinely stunned.
That is how it is. Do that first, and if you have time, money, and other resources left over, then do the rest. Give alms. God will not ask you why you did not give alms. He will ask you, “Why did you not have children? What did you do with the talent I gave you?” That is what He will ask. I can understand if you were unable to have children. Perhaps you have a physical problem, or your husband does. But deliberately moving the field of your work to wherever you yourself prefer is a grave error. Do you know how many such cases there are? I mentioned this simply because it came to mind as I was speaking. We try to find our own ways. No. So there are evil people who repented, and there are also good people who were not Christians at all. And these good people, as I told you, must learn this: there is no salvation by works; there is salvation through Christ. And Christ is not an employer who pays wages for works; He is the Giver of life.
If people do not learn this, it would have been better for them not to have been born. They have failed. There was no purpose in their coming into the world. In any case, “When the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who was not wearing a wedding garment.” In Orthodox religious teaching there is much discussion about the wedding garment.
During Holy Week especially, we speak about this when we sing those beautiful words: “I see Your bridal chamber adorned, O my Savior, but I have no wedding garment that I may enter.” This is what it means. Again, in the parable of the Prodigal Son, we hear that when the Prodigal returned, repented, and said, “I have sinned”—yes, I did these things, and I am not worthy to be called your son—the command was given to bring him the first and best robe. Here again the garment is being discussed.
We symbolize this garment by the burial shroud in which we are wrapped. That shroud placed around us, front and back, is the wedding garment. It is indispensable, and it identifies those who did not remain merely children of Adam but became brethren of the new Adam, Christ. The descendants of Adam are naked, stripped of grace. “Wretched as I am, I have stripped myself of the robe woven by God,” we sing at Vespers for the Expulsion of our First Parents. Man knows that he is a descendant of the naked Adam, who lost this God-woven robe along the paths of sin and clothed himself in fig leaves. He knows this. When he was baptized,
he should at least have had ears to hear and understand what was said over the others and over him as well: “Grant me a radiant garment, You who clothe Yourself with light as with a garment.” What are those white clothes which the priest blesses and symbolically puts on the little child? What are they? They are the grace of the Holy Spirit. They show that the child is no longer a naked descendant of the naked Adam, but has been clothed. “As many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” That is what we are speaking of here. Christ drew this image from a custom that remains in the East to this day. When a great celebration is held, and especially when the host is wealthy, he gives a suit of clothing to every guest, so that all the guests in the festive hall are dressed alike. It is like going into the army.
You may be a civilian, an engineer, for example; but there you are in the infantry, with your hair cut, wearing boots, and so forth. You see another man who is a lawyer; there he is too, in the infantry, with his hair cut, eating from the army mess tin, and so forth. You see others who are scholars and professionals, and so on. Beneath the khaki, they are all equal. They are soldiers under the same uniform. So it is with Christians. The brethren of Christ are clothed in Christ, and Christ looks for this garment. When He went in, He did not find people divided into evil and good, because they had been changed. But He found one man, He says, who had entered among that company and had no wedding garment.
What could he say? “Did they ask me for money? Was it not offered to me? Did I refuse to take it? I thought that with my own righteousness I did not need You; I did not need what You gave and offered freely, and so I came clothed in my own righteousness.” And the response seized him: “He was speechless.” He had no excuse, nothing he could say one way or the other. Then the king said to his servants, “Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Do you understand, then, what this means? Why did this happen? Because he had no wedding garment. That is the point. My beloved, we must be clothed in the righteousness of God.
Christ covers a person; He clothes him. Never put forward your own righteousness. Take your place behind the Cross of Christ—behind the Cross of Christ. Unless the Cross of Christ and the Crucified One go before us, we cannot enter. We may say whatever we like and explain the matter however we wish today, but these garments are given freely by Christ in His Orthodox Church—in His Orthodox Church. For Christ founded one Church. All the others are churches made by men, whether out of ego or self-interest. Christ has one faith. The rest are forms of faith devised by particular people over the course of time.
As we said at the beginning, because of the note that one of the brethren had here, this is the only religion that endures throughout history. No other does. All the others will eventually lead back to the embrace of some human being. Only the Orthodox Church can gradually lead the faithful up to the Upper Room, where the gifts of the Holy Spirit were distributed like tongues of fire. She is the one Church. Everything else is a human construction, as the evidence itself shows. And Christ is the only founder, as we often say, of the true religion
who also has an empty tomb. All the other so-called founders of religions remain bound in their burial shrouds. Only Jesus Christ—the Crucified One, the Nazarene—has an empty tomb and promises the Resurrection to those who believe in Him, as does His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos. These are the two empty tombs, and for us their emptiness is a pledge that all who believe in Him will be saved. As you see, the words and images are simple, but their meaning is profound. When a person chooses to follow Orthodox teaching, which gives him this garment on the day of his Baptism, it also gives him the means to preserve the garment and keep it pure, because it is only natural for a person
to soil this suit, this garment, whether by word, deed, or thought, so that it is no longer fit to be a wedding garment. Imagine a bride arriving at that hour with her wedding dress stained, whether partly or completely. Such a thing is unthinkable. How could she present herself at the crowning, and how could she enter the bridal chamber? It cannot be. Christ knows that a person will soil the white garment given to him at Baptism. That is why He has also provided other helps by which it can be cleansed. How many times has the suit I am wearing now been sent away for cleaning? It goes to the cleaners every three or four days, because it gets dirty.
Do we not wash our shirts and underclothes—mine and yours—every day? Do we not wash our hands once, twice, three, five, or ten times a day, depending on how dirty they become? This garment is cared for in the same way. When a person departs and denies Christ, he also denies his Baptism—for that is what we do when we change our way of life and walk away. We deny Him. The words of Baptism, “I renounce Satan,” become, “I renounce Christ.” At Baptism we said, “I renounce Satan, and all his works, and all his worship,” and, “I unite myself to Christ.” But when we grow older—ten, twelve, or fifteen years old—and the flesh begins to demand its own desires, while the world offers its fantasies, self-interest, ego, and all the rest, our confession is reversed. We turn to Christ and say to Him, “I renounce You, O Christ.”
“My child, where will you go? Will you leave? Where will you go?” “I will go with the devil. You desire virginity, but I will go with the devil, who says, ‘Down with virginity, down with the establishment and its taboos.’ You desire children, but we will go with the devil, who does not want children. You desire fasting, but we will go with the devil, who does not want fasting. You desire the Church, but we will go with the devil, who wants sleep. Why should I come with You?” You renounce Christ. He does not hold you by force. “But take off the little suit I gave you.” For it is easy to enter through Baptism. The door stands open. Your father opened it, your godmother opened it, others opened it. But remaining inside is difficult. Now you yourself must struggle to remain there. When you were small, we easily brought you in and you received the suit. But now, if you choose to leave, you must leave the suit behind.
“Whenever you wish to return, I will have kept it safe for you.” “Bring out the first robe,” says the master. For this truly is the first robe. It is not made of some fine wool or cashmere; it is the robe of the grace of Baptism. Suppose, for example, that a young woman works at the Lambropoulos department store, but she quarrels with the owner and he dismisses her, or she leaves. Will she not leave behind the uniform she wore bearing the emblem of the House of Lambropoulos? Could she go outside wearing it and work somewhere else? She could not. She will leave behind what belonged to that company and go away to live her own life, work for someone else, and be paid by them. It is exactly the same here. It depends on us. We Orthodox, at least, received this garment entirely free of charge, at no cost and with great ease. The door was opened freely to us.
They brought us into Baptism. Now we go out and live as we please, because we do not like it there. But to enter again, to find the garment kept safely within, to receive it once more, to be clothed in splendor and not found naked—here we must also consider the angel of the Church of Laodicea. We have given a separate talk here on “The Angel of Laodicea.” He said, “I am rich,” and so forth, “and have need of nothing,” and many other such things. What did Christ answer him? What is a person to understand? You may own as many suits as you like, even white ones—what does that prove? Brides also wear white. A woman may have lived as a prostitute and wandered down every sinful path, yet now she comes, puts on white, and plays the part of a virgin. What does that prove? Do clothes establish a person’s honor and morality?
A person may be naked within, no matter how dressed up he is outwardly. It is the inner person that concerns God. He is not concerned with shells. A man cares about the yolk, about what is inside the egg. Does he care about the cage? No. He asks what is inside it. What kind of bird is there—a lark, a canary, or perhaps a sparrow? That is the question. Yet we imagine that we are wise and that God has made a mistake in His choice. This, more or less, is what follows from the things said here. These subjects are certainly not exhausted. We have merely touched upon them in the hope that someone may be edified. Therefore, I pray that God may have mercy on us. Amen.

Είναι υποχρεωτικό να πάω;
Όχι.
Μας έβαλαν στο βάπτισμα μέσα. Τώρα εμείς βγαίνουμε και κάνουμε τη ζωή μας, δεν μας αρέσει. Αλλά για να εισέλθεις πάλι όμως ξανά, για να το βρεις που το έχουν φυλάξει μέσα, για να ξανατοπάρεις, να βρεθείς εστολισμένος, να μη βρεθείς γυμνός, εδώ πρέπει να πάρουμε και να συνδυάσουμε τον Άγγελο Λαοδικείας. Είναι ειδική ομιλία αυτή, «Άγγελο Λαοδικείας», την έχουμε κάμει εδώ. Ο οποίος έλεγε ότι έχει, «πεπλούτηκα» και λοιπά, «και ουδενός χρείαν έχω», και τέτοια και και και. Τι του απήντησε ο Χριστός εκεί πέρα; Τι να καταλάβει ο άνθρωπος; Δεν πάει να έχεις όσα κοστούμια θέλεις και λευκά να έχεις. Τι βγαίνει; Φοράνε και οι νύφες λευκά. Μπορεί να είναι πόρνη και να γύρισε όλα τα μονοπάτια και έρχεται τώρα να βάλει τα λευκά και υποδύεται τον ρόλο της παρθένου. Τι βγαίνει από αυτό; Τα κοστούμια κάνουν την τιμιότητα και την ηθική του ανθρώπου;
