Summary
The lecture begins by recalling that God requires those seeking His forgiveness to forgive others and pursue reconciliation before offering worship. The prepared wedding banquet signifies the joy and grace of salvation, especially the Eucharistic union of the creature with the Creator, for which humanity can claim no merit. God’s patient invitation is universal, but persistent indifference and hostility will ultimately encounter divine judgment rather than endless tolerance.

Those of you who were with us for our last talk will remember that we spoke about a parable told by Christ: specifically, the parable of the debtor who owed ten thousand talents. It concerned forgiveness and, more generally, the freedom from resentment that a person must possess, because, being human, he sins against his fellow human beings, but above all against God Himself. Yet when he asks God for forgiveness while refusing to forgive others, everything changes. In a certain sense, even the sins he confessed become unforgiven, because God withdraws His forgiveness.
If we persist in our malice, we shall find ourselves in terrible difficulty. Of course, we have no strength of our own; but if we repeatedly bear with the weaknesses of our fellow human beings, then by His strength we shall be able to overcome everything. It is true that many people remain bound to others by such things—old hatreds, old passions, or more recent ones, as we were saying. They remain in this condition and imagine that God accepts theoria, divine contemplation, as well as their prayer and the gifts they offer, when in fact He does not. He has stated this plainly in the law of the Gospel: “If, as you offer your gift, you remember that something stands between you and another person, leave your gift outside the Church. Go first and be reconciled; settle that unresolved matter, and then come and offer your gift.” The occasion for that parable also reminded us that Christ said and did many things, but because man is material and not only spiritual, He took many incidents from human life and even from nature itself, and made them into parables and examples, so that, as you know, they would make a deeper impression upon those listening to a talk.
A listener remembers an example, however uneducated he may be, even if he does not remember the rest of the talk. This is precisely what Christ did with His disciples and, more generally, with all those who were near Him. All these teachings have remained with us as parables. As we said the other day, we are trying, as far as we can, to bring some of them to light, so that we ourselves may be edified and may edify others as well. That was the first parable we interpreted, by the grace of God, in our previous talk. Tonight I have chosen another parable, known as “The Parable of the Royal Wedding.” It comes from the Evangelist Matthew, who preserved it for us.
More precisely, it is found in chapter 22, beginning with verse 1. It is a parable that bears some resemblance to, but is fundamentally different from, the Parable of the Great Supper, which we interpreted on the Sunday of the Forefathers, and from the Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen. That is another parable which, God willing, will be the subject of a separate lesson. It arose from the situation of the Jews, who would one day be rejected, while others would be called into the Kingdom.
Those others were the idolaters—the Greeks, as we once were, and other peoples.
This beautiful parable presents the story of a wedding. Simply put, a king is arranging his son’s wedding. He invites the people once, twice, three times, but most of them refuse to come, and the parable tells us what happens. In a certain sense, the same thing awaits us when we too are invited to this joy, to this wedding, but refuse: some reject it outright and persecute Christianity; others believe but do not act upon their faith. Sadly, there are many categories of people who will remain outside. It is not only those who deny Christ openly, but also those who believe and yet do nothing. Through this parable, He wishes to tell us what the conduct—the whole way of life—of those who desire to enter the Kingdom of Heaven must be. “And Jesus answered and spoke to them again in parables, saying, ‘The Kingdom of Heaven is like…’” For Christ spoke about the Kingdom of Heaven; He did not speak about a kingdom here on earth. So if at times a Christian is more concerned with the things above and less concerned with those below, let us not misunderstand him.
From the moment a person resolves to save his soul, he will think more about the things above, and at times not at all about the things below. This is not strange, nor is it madness, as some people claim. This is the central purpose of Christianity: to raise the human person and lift him upward. Remember the Samaritan woman. What kind of life had she lived, and what might one have thought of her? Yet when she spoke with Christ, she left even her water jar at the well and went away. What a great thing this is! What a change takes place within when Christ enters a person. Thank you.
A person must change and turn his thoughts toward the things above. Scripture says, “Set your minds on things above, not on things on the earth.” Look at creation and you will see that everything else looks downward. Only man stands upright. All the animals and the rest look toward their bellies. Man alone was made upright, as a reminder: you were made for the things above, not for those below. You were made for that Kingdom, not for a kingdom here.
Many people want Christ only for this life, but Christ is not only for this life. Paul tells the Corinthians that whoever receives Christ only for this life is the most pitiable of all people. And Christ Himself, if you remember, was once preaching when a young man came forward at the end and said to Him, “Tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” What did Christ answer? “Who appointed Me,” He said, “a judge or an arbitrator over you? I did not come to divide your vineyards for you; divide those among yourselves. And if you deal unjustly with one another in dividing them, we shall settle that above. I have come to speak to you about other things. I did not come to speak about fields and vineyards. You will remain here for a time, and they will remain here. If you wrong another or seek to take what belongs to him, we shall discuss that above. But I do not speak to you about earthly matters; I speak about the things of heaven.” That is why He says here, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like…” The subject is heaven. Man was made for this; “our citizenship is in heaven.” That is where he belongs. “May I also find, through metanoia—through repentance—the road” by which he may return to Paradise.
“Grant me the homeland for which I long, making me once again a citizen of Paradise.” This is the prayer of man. This is man’s purpose: to return to Paradise. The earth, its civilization, its arts, its inventions, and all its works will be destroyed. Nothing can remain. They will vanish from the face of the earth. But the souls will remain. This is clearly expressed here: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like…” Christ spoke about the Kingdom of Heaven, not about a kingdom on earth. “A certain king”—I want to draw your attention to these words—“who arranged a marriage for his son”; that is, he gave his son in marriage, or was preparing his son’s wedding. And the parable continues.
By now you understand who the king is: he is God. Who is His Son, the bridegroom? Christ. Who is the bride? The human soul or, more generally, the Church. In the Apocalypse, in chapter 21, the soul is described as the wife of the Lamb. The Lamb is Christ, and the human soul—or the Church, which contains the souls—is presented as the wife of the Lamb. For the Church means the assembly of souls, the assembly of those who have believed. So I repeat: the king is God, and the bridegroom—the one we would call the groom—is Christ.
The bride is the soul. In any case, “he sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding.” “He sent his servants,” the parable says. When we read both the Old Testament and the New Testament—the period before Christ, the period when Christ was in the world, and the period after Christ, when Christ had ascended—we see roughly three periods. We see the prophets and the honorable Forerunner calling the people: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” He begins to speak, ringing out the summons to the Kingdom, just as the parable speaks of it here.
John said that he stood near the Bridegroom, for he calls Christ our Bridegroom. He acknowledges that Christ is the One whose sandal strap he is not worthy to loosen. This is one group of servants who call the people—messengers and preachers who summon them to the Kingdom. Then Christ comes. Even before His departure, He has the Forerunner preaching for a certain time and leading people toward God, and He also has the Apostles. He sent them out two by two, and all twelve preached Christ. Here is another instance, another period, as we were saying: a second sending of servants to bring people to Christ. He sends the Twelve; He sends the Seventy.
He sends Stephen, He sends Paul, He sends Barnabas—He sends and sends and sends, calling people to the Kingdom. All these people did nothing else, and even to this day we continue to cry out, calling all who are willing to return to the Kingdom of Heaven. Let us focus on the words, “He sent them to those who were invited.” There are people who have been invited. One might say that we, above all, are now among them. Yes, we have been baptized. The whole world is invited, but especially the baptized: those who are near Him, those who once confessed that they wanted Him. Yet afterward they became indifferent or denied Him because they found the way difficult.
They did not want to struggle, for one reason or another. Is that not so? Christ, for His part, has done and continues to do His work. So He told them to come to the wedding. “But they were unwilling to come.” Many people refuse from the very beginning. There are also entire peoples who heard the preaching—Apostles went to their lands, preachers went to them—yet they rejected it, or kept it for a little while and then rejected it. Such cases also exist. In any event, they were unwilling to come. As a result, he sent other servants again, as I told you, saying, “Tell those who are invited: Behold, I have prepared my banquet; my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, and everything is ready.”
“Come to the wedding; come to the wedding.” Here the parable presents the banquet. The prepared feast is the banquet. In this way it presents the joy that ought to arise—and truly does arise—when a person chooses to come and meet Christ. You know, a wedding is a milestone in human life and, I dare say, regardless of how many weddings may turn out afterward, it is the most joyful milestone for a family and for an individual. What joy there is at a wedding! What excitement surrounds it!
What sacrifices are made, what property is transferred, and how much labor is spent for a wedding! Perhaps the marriage will fail the very next day. Yet the Gospel uses the relationship between bridegroom and bride as a comparison, so that it may speak to people through the joy they understand. Of course, the true joy is not of the same kind. It is a different joy when a soul repents and returns, because when the soul departs far from God, it becomes adulterous; it becomes a harlot. Christ is the Bridegroom. When the soul chooses to depart from Him and obey another will, it becomes adulterous. But when it returns in metanoia, in repentance, there is joy in heaven. “There is joy in heaven,” He says, “over one sinner who repents.” It is a great event when a soul is united with Christ.
When it desires to sit at His table, the important thing every soul must understand is that it contributes nothing and offers nothing. We said the same when speaking about the Parable of the Great Supper. When we are invited to an ordinary, earthly family wedding, we have to bring something in our hands. In our homeland there are still customs by which guests send meat to the wedding, bake bread, send wine, and offer other things besides whatever gifts they may give. For a modern couple, they may even give thousands of drachmas or buy them a refrigerator, perhaps a cooker if they do not have one, or something else. For many invited guests, however—
—this is rather difficult. “How can we go? We have to bring something. As things stand, we cannot afford even a box of matches to carry in our hands.” So many people do not go, or they content themselves with sending a telegram or a small gift, or they tell a great or small lie to excuse themselves and let the difficulty pass. But things are not like that here. At an earthly wedding you might excuse yourself by saying, “How could I go when I would have nothing in my hands?” They are relatives, you see; we must bring something, we are obliged to. So you find it difficult and do not go. But here things are different. When Christ calls, when God—who is arranging His Son’s wedding and seeks every soul as His bride—calls you, He says, “I do not want you to carry anything in your hands.” After all, what could a human being bring to such a royal banquet? What could you possibly carry?
What do I carry when I go to receive Holy Communion? What do I possess that is truly my own? What do I offer in comparison with what I receive—with what takes place at that moment through my union with God, in that joy shared by angels, archangels, and the whole heavenly realm, when dust is united with God, the creature with the Maker, the created being with the Creator? What does the creature offer? It offers nothing. Man produces only one thing that he could offer, and often he does not even offer that: his sins. Many times he does not surrender them. He carries them on his back and goes to receive Holy Communion. He does not offer up his sins, even though sins are the only thing man produces. Man possesses nothing else that is good. Everything else comes from grace and from the Spirit. He must fully grasp this and believe it. And so he is not merely counted worthy, but granted an even greater grace…
And so he comes and sits at that same table, the spiritual table prepared by the Holy Spirit. And the Bridegroom sits there to share the banquet with His bride here below and to unite Himself with her, so that she may be with Him there above. These are wondrous things, and we cannot grasp them because we have never prayed especially: “My God, my Christ, illumine me. Show me what is taking place between You and me. What do these things mean? What am I, and what are You? What do I offer, and what do You offer?” Then see what answer we receive. See what will be shown to us, and how our knees will give way beneath us. We imagine that we have rights. We imagine that we offer something. We imagine that we are good and that heaven owes us something.
We expect the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) and the Saints to protect us, to care for us, to keep us healthy, so that we do not fall ill, do not die, and so on without end. But this is delusion. Man offers nothing. This point is strongly emphasized both here and in the Parable of the Great Supper: “Behold, I have prepared my banquet; the table is ready.” Nothing needed for the feast is lacking. Only the people are missing—the people who must come forward, sit down, eat, and rejoice with me. We see a beautiful image of this in the monasteries. This order was not inspired by worldly ways; it comes from God. Just as everything there—their movements and their whole manner of life—is ordered by God, so also is their common table. You may see places set for one hundred, two hundred, or three hundred people, with everything arranged perfectly.
The food, the bread, the wine, the napkin, the fruit, the sweet—everything is there. The monk puts on his formal monastic clothing and goes to sit in the refectory, keeping his hands composed and, if possible, not looking to the right or the left, but praying, listening to the reading, and eating. Everything is ready; nothing is needed. Even the water—everything has been provided down to the smallest detail. And all those people sit together as though they were one soul: elders, younger men, laypeople, clergy—everyone in his proper place. You might say, “What is this place? Is it a cemetery?” Not a sound is heard. No one lacks anything, and no one asks for anything. Everything is provided perfectly, yet simply, for everyone. And I sometimes say that if we human beings...
can conceive such arrangements and present something approaching perfection by comparison, then will that other table—the banquet at which God Himself sets forth His own feast—lack anything? It lacks nothing. God prepares this table, and God issues the invitation. The only thing you have to offer is your sins. If you want to be unburdened, with your vessel cleansed so that you can receive all the riches of goodness and grace from the table Christ sets before you, then do so. Why do you want those sins? What will you do with them? Do not take them with you. Nothing of yours is needed there. Go just as you are; God has everything ready. God Himself! What has man created for his own happiness? God created everything, and God created man as well.
God has also prepared the means of his salvation. God alone is the One who labors and cares for the salvation of mankind. Man himself does not care. He may perhaps act from fear of Hell, but rarely from love. Rare indeed are those who follow God’s way out of love. So tell those invited, Lord, that they have no excuse: everything is ready. My oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered; all the choice animals are prepared. For upon the Holy Table lies the fatted calf, Christ. He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, the One who was slain. He is the Lamb that was slain. However you wish to understand the image, all these words find their complete fulfillment in Him.
“Come to the wedding.” There is joy, and it is an honor for you to come to a royal banquet. Come, you poor outcasts, come—for before the greatness of what God is doing, we are lower than the lowest. And yet, “they made light of it and went their ways.” Have you ever reflected on those words, “they made light of it”? They acknowledge the King, the Bridegroom, the bride, and the wedding; they do not reject any of them. They acknowledge them, but through negligence they do not come. These are people who are Christians on paper but antichrists in their manner of life—people who are negligent and indifferent.
They say there is no need for fasting, no need for confession, no need to attend Church—no need for this, no need for that. “I have Christ within me.” But do you know what I have within me and what I do in secret? This is human indifference. We have work, debts, and children. And so the passage continues: “One went away to his own field, another to his business; and the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.” Here we see a third condition, and this third one is active and violent. The first two concern people who say, “Yes, but...” Yes, they come at Pascha holding a candle, but throughout the whole year...
they are absent from the Church. I repeat: these are Christians only on paper. They do not openly reject the faith. Others say, of course, that some higher power exists. In that sense they believe; they are not unbelievers and do not take an openly negative position. Some “would not come”; they refused to believe in Christ. The others believed in Christ, but they do not act. They do not listen to Christ; in practice, they do not accept Him. And do you know what Christ said about this? “He who loves Me will keep My commandments.” If we do not keep what Christ commands, then we do not love Christ; we are simply deluding ourselves.
But there is yet another class, as you heard: “The rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.” Consider the fate of many of the Apostles and many of the Prophets. They went to remind the people and to reprove them, and nearly all of them met the sword. Many of the first group have, in effect, rejected Christianity. They say, “Christianity is for monks; all that business about churches...” They begin with such excuses, then forget and postpone everything. What should come first: material things or spiritual things? I see it myself.
They remain indifferent and stay exactly as they are. Those on the next level adopt a hostile attitude toward the preaching, toward the Gospel, and toward the Church of Christ. This hostility has existed from the earliest days of Christianity, as you know. Open the Acts of the Apostles and you will find persecution after persecution—not only of the Apostles and preachers, but also of the faithful, who were persecuted because they believed. Begin with the first martyr, Saint Stephen, and continue from there. See how many persecutions the Church of Christ, the Kingdom of Christ, endured. So there are enemies, and they still exist today.
They blaspheme the Lord, the Church, the ringing bells, the priests, and many of us as well, blaming us for every misfortune. They mock everything—the Resurrection, Clean Monday, even imprisonment—everything, as you know. But we have God. Even heaven’s patient endurance has limits. One day the curtain of tolerance will fall, and the other side of the coin will appear: justice. And when justice takes matters in hand, then we shall see where each person will go. For us, the matter has two sides. First, we are concerned with the group described by the words, “But they made light of it and went away,” because all of us, apart from certain young people today, claim to be Christians. Sometimes we hear people say...
“What am I, a Jew?” I do not know what you are. Your deeds may show that you are even a Jew, because you do not act as a Christian or live as a Christian. This is the group in which we find most of the people who will be condemned to Hell. In theory they appear to be Christians, but in practice they are not; their deeds reveal the truth. And Christ will judge accordingly. There is a passage here, you should bear it in mind, spoken by Jeremiah.
Many times we condescend to say that this is the greater part of what belongs to us—but where can we place it? Can a person who thinks clearly and has even some awareness honestly hope to enter the Kingdom of Heaven? Judging by our own deeds, we are bound for the depths below. Our deeds cry it out, despite all the objections and arguments raised by most Christians. How can they enter? They will not. I am sorry to speak this way, but this is how things are. With so many people indifferent and so many persecuting Christianity, is it possible that they have found the right path? Look, in general, at how atheism behaves toward the Kingdom of Heaven.
But a day will come when they will pay the price. The people of that time paid it, for this parable was directed against the scribes and Pharisees. It concerned them, of course, but it also concerns us and everyone in general, because the word of God is the word of God and is not confined to one neighborhood. It does not apply only to one particular situation, hour, or moment; it is eternal and boundless. It encompasses every circumstance and all humanity, from Adam until the end of the age. God possesses the boundless Word (Logos), the Word who is first of all, and what has been spoken will surely be fulfilled. Then things will be very difficult for man.
Consider their utter destruction, their captivities, and their exiles. If you take into account the destruction and enslavement carried out under Nebuchadnezzar, it was a terrible event. And if you consider Titus, who slaughtered and crucified one million people—or I do not know how many thousands...
in the year 70 after Christ. These things are instruments in God’s hands. God does not need to send an executioner down from heaven; He need only permit enemies to enter. They act and work in accordance with what God allows; this is divine chastisement. God has many ways of answering human wickedness, so that people may take heed, repent, and be saved—or else be condemned. I say this while looking at what is happening today. Why do people call the weather “bad”? This is blasphemy against God. There may be a severe winter, yes, but there is no evil weather. No weather is evil; evil exists only in man.
The world is governed; it has a Master. And when the Master gives such a command, He has a reason. Should we not seek to understand that reason? Let us not look merely at the snow, but at the One who sent it and who continues to send it. He can bring everything to a standstill in a single day, and He has His reason. These things are instruments of heaven, meant to instruct and correct us. They speak to us and remind us: “Take heed. I am here; you cannot escape Me anywhere.” No one can remain at ease when God is angered. His anger is not for man’s harm, but for his good. Earthquakes also take place for man’s good; they speak to us, for they are called messages from God. Yet man is shaken and scattered, and still he does not change.
When the earthquake struck Thessaloniki, what did the newspapers write the next day? Even in the tents, a woman slipped away from her husband to be with her adulterous lover. The earthquake had demolished the illicit bed in the house, yet she dragged her sin out into the open. She did not abandon her sin. As for them, and then for us—this is no game. It is no game at all. Thank you.
Do you understand the reason? There is abundant light surrounding this truth—abundant light. But man does not want it. Man openly rejects it. If I had with me a passage from what was said about society, you would hear the same things that I have told you about Christ, the very things we were saying about the world. Thank you.
In that work, the Apostles always gathered everyone they found, both evil and good, into the wedding feast—evil and good together. How could that be, someone may ask? And the wedding hall was filled with guests. Many people are indeed evil...
Come; things are not as you imagine. Your case can be set right. Your sins are forgiven. Do not be discouraged. You do not have to have been a saint from your mother’s womb—though blessed would you be if you were. But even if we admit that, as a human being, you were not good but evil, and that you left only ruins and tears in your wake, there is still room for you, provided you are willing to come. For reconciliation with the Creator, two wills must meet. One is God’s will—and we have every assurance that God always wills what accords with divine truth and with the true good of man. The other is that man himself must be willing. Thank you very much.
Repent! The first of them repented in her own world. And after all these examples of repentance, will they still refuse to repent? Do not be scandalized, then, that even the evil—even idolaters such as we were—were called into His Kingdom. We were willing, we entered, and we have remained there to this day. There were good people as well; there were people of every kind, and good people still exist today. And as for those who remain in sin, why should that trouble you?
Pray that they may become good through Holy Scripture and through God’s message; and pray especially for Vangelis.
The wedding hall was filled—that is, the hall became full. Why, then, are you scandalized when you sometimes hear that an inferior person is inside? There is no difficulty. When a person is in a wretched condition, Christ can change him, if only he is willing. And another, who has been well-disposed from infancy, can be brought to fulfillment through Christ and afterward pass into the Kingdom. The Church of Christ, which as a whole is the bride, is a great hospital with no healthy people in it. Even the doctors sometimes depend on support so that they can remain beside the sick. If we go through a hospital, we shall find sick people: some in serious condition, others recovering, and others just being admitted. It is exactly the same within the Church.
How is this accomplished? The whole course of treatment is here. What does the Church do within? She provides the entire process of healing, so that the person may become fit and be received into the Kingdom. And the Kingdom, as we said on another occasion, requires royal children; the Kingdom is inherited, and so we too must become worthy to be those royal children. We become royal children through Holy Communion. The Blood of Christ the King flows within us, and thus we become His children and children of the Kingdom. Holy Communion is indispensable, but it must be received exactly as it should be.
Then we shall have real and fitting results. It truly brings the healing of sins. Otherwise, it becomes condemnation; for if a person does not approach properly, it will produce the opposite result. I have a miraculous medicine. Everyone who took it was healed, yet I take it and die. How did that happen? I took it in my own way. The physician said to take it at this time and in this amount, but I take it whenever I please and as much as I please. Will it still produce the proper result? In the same way, the medicine of Holy Communion does not work miraculously for the multitude merely because they receive it. But if a person acts rightly and takes it according to the prescription given by the infallible Physician, Christ, through the Holy Synod, then what I have described can take place. And, as a brief aside, this can help us understand more clearly that the Church is a hospital.
You know, some people do not go to Church. Abroad, I even met a man who had become a Protestant because of certain disorders within the Church. For example, he saw how many people there behaved, the sacrifices being offered there, and the conflicts they had with one another.
Secondly, within the Church and even in the procession, the devil intrudes and tempts people. They create such situations that they themselves are not benefited, while others are harmed. We Orthodox must understand this, for we are assailed by the devil. Orthodoxy alone is assailed by the devil; no other latter-day church is assailed by him.
Rejoice that your soul has remained there. In the whole ecumenical church, the soul is not there. This is grace. Even within the sanctuary itself, you see Satan raging so that people may not receive it. I had to say this first, because some imagine that they will go to Church and find angels. Angels are not the ones who go to Church; we sinners go to Church so that, little by little, we may become what we ought to be. Those of you who have advanced should therefore bear with those of us in the Church who have not yet overcome these sins. People are sick. When they are healed, they too will become well.
The result was that the hall was filled. When it was full—when the house and the wedding hall had plainly been filled and all were clothed—then ‘the king came in to see the guests,’ to see who was inside. ‘He saw there a man who was not wearing a wedding garment.’ There was a custom, still preserved in parts of the East today: when a great man held a formal celebration or wedding, he provided a garment for every guest. How else could each person take part in the banquet and in the wedding joy? Everyone would be dressed alike and would not wear his own clothing according to his means.
They would not be distinguished by their wealth or social condition. One might be able to afford only black clothing, another something new, and another an embroidered garment, while others were poor. But there they all wore the same garment. It is like the army: does the lawyer go dressed one way and the laborer another?
One fastens his uniform, and the other does the same. One wears exactly what the other wears. At home, their possessions may make them unequal. Here we are equal; we are soldiers.
The bridegroom is Christ, God, who gives a garment to each person. This is why, during Holy Week, we sing: ‘I behold Your bridal chamber richly adorned, O my Savior, but I have no wedding garment that I may enter. Make radiant the garment of my soul.’
This is the garment Christ gives to man, the descendant of Adam, making him a child of God.
He places it upon him and clothes him in it.
It is the white, clean garment we receive at Baptism.
We also symbolize this garment at the hour of death, even with the burial shrouds brought from the Holy Land. What are those shrouds? What is a shroud? It is this white garment, showing that we have not remained naked as descendants of Adam, but have put on Christ. Sometimes they place it over us from front to back, covering the whole body, signifying that we are not naked but clothed by Christ. How precious is He who clothes man and helps human nature appear before the Kingdom not naked, but properly arrayed. All of this is given freely. It is not that the garment was withheld at the door, or that money was demanded, or that it was too costly. Nor may anyone suppose that he can appear in his own garment.
His own righteousness—none of that avails. Yet this man entered in his present condition. He reached the table, and the king said, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Why? Because of his pride, you see—because of pride. Others interpret it this way: he had been called and had come that far, but he had not prepared a wedding garment. The wedding garment is fashioned through the good works a person performs after being called: living in metanoia and repentance, going to Holy Confession, remaining watchful, not committing adultery or fornication, not killing one’s children, fasting, and so forth. These are the things that preserve the white garment Christ gave at the wedding feast. Yet we mistreat this garment; we mistreat this token of belonging that He gives us on the day of Baptism.
On the day of our Baptism we said: “I renounce you, Satan, and I unite myself to You, Christ. I renounce all your pomp, your worship, and your fashions.” But later, when we grow up, we say: “Take it back; I will go with the devil. I renounce You, Christ, and unite myself to you, Satan. I like worldly fashion; I like lawlessness; I like illicit embraces; I like this and that,” and so on. Such a person has indeed received the call through infant Baptism: he found the door open and entered easily, because in infant Baptism the door was opened to him. From that point on, however, the door begins to narrow. If a person is to pass through, he must live the corresponding kind of life. Otherwise, one day Christ will spew him out, wherever he may go, as I was saying. Hence the outcome: “Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into the outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” He is cast into the outer darkness, even though he had been invited and had come all the way to the wedding feast.
So they lived bearing the name of Christians, but their way of life was anti-Christian. This is what the passage we heard was warning them about.
May this not happen to us. May we be saved and found wearing a wedding garment, so that we may enter the Kingdom of Heaven, at the renewal of all things, before the whole world and before our very eyes.

λίγο δύσκολο αυτό το πράγμα. Πού να πάμε; Πρέπει κάτι να πάρουμε. Και εμείς τώρα, όπως είμαστε, δεν είμαστε σε καμιά θέση να πάρουμε ούτε ένα κουτί σπίρτα να κρατάμε στο χέρι μας. Και πολλοί άνθρωποι δεν πηγαίνουνε ή αρκούνται να στείλουν ένα τηλεγράφημα ή αρκούνται να στείλουν ένα μικρό δώρο ή να πούνε ένα μεγάλο ψέμα ή μικρό ψέμα, να καλύψουν τέλος πάντων, να περάσει αυτή η μπόρα. Εδώ όμως δεν είναι έτσι τα πράγματα. Μπορείς τότε να δικαιολογηθείς, να πεις: «Μα πού να πάω, αφού δεν θα κρατούσα τίποτα στα χέρια μου;» Είναι συγγενείς, βλέπετε, πρέπει κάτι να πάμε, είμαστε υποχρεωμένοι. Και δυσκολεύεσαι και δεν πηγαίνεις. Εδώ όμως δεν είναι τα πράγματα έτσι. Όταν καλεί ο Χριστός, όταν καλεί ο Θεός που παντρεύει τον Υιό Του και ζητάει νύφη την κάθε ψυχή, σου λέει: «Δεν θέλω να κρατάς τίποτα στο χέρι σου». Άλλωστε, τι μπορεί να κρατάει σε ένα βασιλικό τέτοιο τραπέζι ο άνθρωπος; Τι κρατάς;
Μετανοήσεις, πρώτη μετενόησε στον κόσμο της. Όλες αυτές τις μετανοήσεις, τους δε θα μετανοήσουν! Μην καταλήγετε, λοιπόν, που και τους πονηρούς, που τους ειδωλολάτρες, εμάς, μας εκάλεσαν στη Βασιλεία τους. Θελήσαμε και πήγαμε και κρατάμε και μέχρι σήμερα. Υπήρχαν και αγαθοί και κάθε τι υπήρχε, και σήμερα υπάρχουν αγαθοί. Και όσοι βρίσκονται στην αμαρτία, τι σε σκοτίζει;
