Summary
The arrival of a new year reveals God’s goodness and forbearance, but every additional day also increases each person’s responsibility before Him. Satan deceives people by stealing today and promising tomorrow, so necessary acts of repentance and virtue must never be postponed. The Christian’s first work is the salvation of the soul through humility, repentance, love of God and neighbor, and cooperation with divine grace in whatever time Christ provides.

I wish you a happy and blessed New Year. In His goodness, God has granted us the grace to enter another year.
His goodness and forbearance have given us this opportunity. Taking occasion from this goodness and forbearance of God, I would like tonight to speak both to myself and to all of us.
the responsibility we bear for this generosity shown to us by our Christ, as we were saying. In the doxology for the New Year, among the other words that our Holy Church addresses to Christ, she asks Him to bless “the crown of the year with His goodness.” It is He who must, so to speak, put His hand upon it. Woe to the person who does not reflect, does not take account, does not feel, and does not understand that time is in the hands of the Lord, and that we must ask Him to give us the time we need. Paul, writing in the Epistle to the Romans, continually reminds us: “Do you not know that the goodness of God leads you to metanoia, to repentance?” By the goodness of God, he means this forbearance, this granting of additional time.
A person cannot die whenever he wishes—unless he does something reckless—nor can he live as long as he wishes. Everything is in the hands of the Lord, and in His all-wise providence, His love, and His goodness, He grants each person as much time as he needs. Do not be misled by the fact that we pray for this person not to die, and then for that person not to die, and so on. These are our own foolish notions. It is as though we were trying to instruct Him, saying, “Take care—our loved one has fallen ill and is dying; leave him here with us.” As though He did not know, or as though something terrible would happen because someone departed against our wishes.
We are often foolish in the way we think about these things.
And so I ask myself: Why have You granted me even to write the year 1981? Why have You granted it? Why are You now giving me this time, this extension of time? Why have You given it to me? How much do I know, how much do I read, how much do I understand? I believe that You hold the scissors, and whenever You wish, You cut the threads of life. I am not speaking of those who cut their own thread, but of ordinary people who have entrusted themselves to the providence, forbearance, and goodness of God. I am speaking of those who so often depart at an hour that others cannot accept: ‘We never expected it—so young, with so many responsibilities.’
These are the cases where people themselves say, “I want nothing more to do with You.” Instead of waiting for Christ to call them, they go on their own and knock at the door: “Here we are. Lock the gentlemen who have arrived down in the basement.” For everyone thinks he can dispose of his life simply as he pleases. Yes, he has freedom, but with that freedom comes responsibility, and he will have to give an account. I do not know whether you have ever wondered what it means for each person’s life to be in the hands of God. Is life in God’s hands, or is it in man’s hands? Let me give you a simple example. Each person’s life is like an oil lamp: a glass filled with oil and a wick inside. God says, “Here, Demetrios, take this little lamp of yours. It holds eighty years of life.”
And in His wisdom, God knows that I am needed—either for my own sake or for someone else—and He determines when the matter will end. But if a person uses his freedom to do something foolish—if he wants to speed, for example, and crashes—then what happens? His lamp had enough oil for eighty years, but he reduced his life to twenty-two.
God is not to blame. We have many such examples—countless examples. The other day I read in the newspaper about a man who put his family in a car. He had come from the provinces to Thessaloniki for a football match, and he gave the wheel to his son. On the road, they were all swept up as if with a dustpan. Were they meant to die then? Was it chance? Was it coincidence? Was it simply an unlucky moment? It was foolishness—sheer foolishness. For when we indulge our reckless impulses and desires, we expect God to stand guard over us like a watchman. Are we to behave recklessly and expect Him to protect us? Just as violations of the moral laws have their corresponding consequences, so do violations of the natural laws—and people know this.
A person takes the appropriate precautions, and whoever is careless or indifferent suffers the corresponding harmful consequences. We need to reflect deeply on this matter of our life, because once we begin to do so, we will make better use of the time that God, in His love, goodness, and forbearance, adds to our life. For when I ask myself, “Will I still be alive next year?” should I not do now the things I keep putting off until the future? The future is not under my control. If a person kept in mind that he is like a dog caught in the dogcatcher’s net...
Some people play the tough guy and blaspheme God for as long as their feet remain on this earth. They think they are something, but they are nothing. Man hangs suspended between the past and the future. He hangs between heaven and earth, between yesterday and tomorrow. He has no present; he has no firm ground beneath his feet. Whatever I am saying is already past, and whatever I am about to say belongs to the future. The present does not exist. The Apostle Paul himself says, “Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.” He says nothing about the present. And when a person realizes that he has nothing to hold on to and no ground beneath his feet, he is exactly as I said: like a dog caught in a net, unable to find its footing, unable to bark or attack. It can do nothing.
He has no control even over a fraction of a second. There is no present—only past and future. So when a person does not know whether he will still be alive a fraction of a second from now, then, if he has even the least bit of reason, he should tremble: “My God, am I departing now? Is this the hour? Is this the moment? Is it tonight? Is it this morning?” This should always be on his mind, and he should always take care to make good use of the time he has. If someone in Hell were then asked, “What would you like?” he would ask for time. He would not ask for money, for his husband or wife, or for any of these things—not for food or clothing, nothing at all. “Give me time. Let me return to the earth, receive my body again, and become a human being once more.”
“Let me cry out, ‘I have sinned.’” He would ask for nothing else. And if all those who are in Hell to this day were ever asked, “What is your desire?” they would all make this same request with one voice. Or they would send someone from there to speak on their behalf: “This is what we all ask: that God give us time, so that we may return to earth, take up our mortal remains—our bodies—and repent.”
Let us cry out, “I have sinned!” Yet God often gives us time in abundance, and we speak as though we still have plenty of time. I was speaking with an eighty-three-year-old woman, and when I brought up these matters, she said to me, “Mr. Panagopoulos, I intend to put these things in order when I grow old.” Do you understand? This is what carelessness leads to.
We have seen such cases. Satan is such a deceiver: he steals the present from us and promises us the future. The people of old used to say, “If you can do something today, do not leave it until tomorrow.” They were not appealing to the Gospel or even to reason; they simply knew it to be true. Tomorrow does not belong to us. Not even the next second belongs to us. How, then, could you fail, O man, to take care with all these years God has added to your life and make good use of them? Yes, our situation is so uncertain. My beloved, we did not enter 1981 without responsibility. The fact that God has given us more time brings an—
an additional responsibility. Why, my God? Because every day, if it is not used well, is charged against us. A person is not held accountable only for the evil he commits. “I did no evil.” But what good did you do? For James says, “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.” It is not enough to say, “Did I kill anyone? I did not kill anyone, so I am not responsible. What did I do? Did I steal, blaspheme, or accuse someone? I do not know what I did to sin.” We must also ask: What good could I have done during the two years God gave me, during which He bore with me, yet I failed to do it?
A person is always active; he must not be passive. So the time that has been added to our lives has given us greater responsibility. What am I to do with it? How am I to use it? God will ask me to give an account of this time. Some people pay no attention. They regard time as a beast, and so they try to kill it. “What are you doing there, man? Let’s play a game of backgammon to kill some time.” Do you understand? He is killing time, when time is the most precious thing of all and the greatest gift God gives to man. Whether a person has good health is not the point. Many times, good health actually harms a person. First of all, is it truly a good thing? The evidence is that many who enjoyed good health lost their souls, while many who did not have good health...
their soul... No, many who had neither good health nor any of those other things did not lose their soul. For this depends neither on health nor on the lack of it; it depends on our free will, on what a person chooses. What I mean is this: if health, wealth, or any other such thing is not used rightly, for the purpose for which God grants it, then it becomes an evil and produces the opposite results. After all, David says, “In the day of my tribulation I sought the Lord.” In my tribulations, I remembered You. And it is true that if a person is not pressed by anything—whether illness, poverty, persecution, slander, or something else—
He does not want much of a relationship with God; he lights a little candle, and that is enough for him. But when circumstances change, then he is humbled and, with tears, draws near to Christ through prayer, vigil, fasting, and self-restraint. The result is the very opposite. Therefore, the Christian—the sober-minded Christian, not merely a Christian on paper—should feel the addition of a new year as a burden. Perhaps you do not grasp what I am telling you, and perhaps others who hear this recorded talk will not grasp it either. But when they pass beyond the grave, they will remember these words of mine, when they see how God will measure and how God will weigh.
how we live—when the words that hand wrote on the wall are applied: “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin,” written concerning Nebuchadnezzar, as we read in Daniel—then you will remember what I am telling you at this moment. Responsibility and carelessness. The fact that God still bears with us shows His forbearance, goodness, and love; but at the same time, it also reveals our responsibility. For although we are so deeply in debt, instead of summoning us to judgment, He gives us further credit: “I will extend your credit a little longer and see what you do.” And this requires no toil, no expense, no sweat. All that is needed is willingness—willingness,
nothing else. The grace of God is like the electric current in a trolleybus. It requires no effort; the trolley pole only has to make contact with the wire above. When a person keeps the pole lowered because he wants nothing to do with these things, naturally everything seems exhausting, difficult, impossible, and hopeless. It is sheer madness. But when a person humbles himself, raises the pole, and makes contact above, everything changes. The burden he feels is the burden of his sin and guilt. Christ does not call him to pay it off or settle the debt himself, but simply to agree to settle accounts with Him.
“Let us settle accounts, so that I may forgive you the whole debt.” But a person will not go to Him because of his egoism: either he thinks he is not in debt, or that God cannot help him, or that he has no need of God. That is why I say that I do not know how people felt, because I heard many say, “We made it into ’81.”
Did you feel your need for this extension of your time in this world? People entertain a thousand false dreams, imagining that they have some great mission. The father must provide for his children, the widow must care for the orphans, the teacher must educate the world, the priest must sanctify others, and so on. Falsehoods. A person’s purpose is the salvation of his soul. If there is time left over, then he may attend to all the other things, which are secondary tasks. There is our principal work, and there are secondary tasks. Everything else is secondary; the soul is our true work. Each person will be called to account: “Where is your soul?” “I lost it for the sake of my children.”
That is false. You lost it for other people? You are deceiving yourself. Yet a person does not want to look deeply within and begin with his own soul before turning in every other direction. Our first responsibility is toward Him who will insistently and zealously demand, “Where is your soul?” After that comes our responsibility toward our spouse, then our children, other people, those outside, and so forth. Our responsibility extends outward, but it begins with the salvation of my own soul. We make a show of generosity, taking an interest in everyone else, while we ourselves sit idle, having done nothing for our own souls. And apart from certain exceptions, in most cases the time given to us
is added first for our own sake, and only afterward for someone else. So let us not allow Satan to deceive us on this point. Let us ask Christ, “Why have You added this time to my life?” And let us believe that Christ has given us this time and that it is blessed. It does not need some lucky first visitor—Photini—to bless it; it does not need a squill plant to bless it, do you understand? Nor does it need a deck of cards for good luck so that the year may be blessed. It is blessed by Christ; it is blessed by the Sovereign of the ages. Since Christ has given it, none of our other falsehoods are needed. Nor do we need Satan to
show us ways of making the year blessed or happy. No, it does not depend on such things. It depends entirely on Christ, who has added it to our lives. Therefore, it is blessed and has been given for a blessing. From that point onward, it depends on me how I use this time and whether I make it blessed or accursed. People speak of “the Golden Age of Pericles.” Why? Did the sun rise from somewhere else? What happened then that made it the Golden Age of Pericles, while our own time is not golden? Even today can be a golden age, if a person so wills. But man does not will it, and that is precisely why he is miserable. He suffers in an age unlike any the world has ever known, with such abundance of every kind of good thing and so many conveniences.
A person need only think of something and be served—not even press or turn buttons, but merely think of it. Yet today he is the most miserable person who has ever lived through all the ages. The psychiatric hospitals prove it; the suicides prove it; the anxiety found everywhere today proves it. More narcotics and tranquilizers are consumed in these years than were sold in all the ages before us. Why? Because man does not have Christ, the One who blesses both our remaining here and, I would say, our departure from here. Place what I am telling you within this perspective, and you will see that you must begin somewhere else. We must approach this year through a different lens—not
through last year’s lens. As you know, merchants, especially at this time of year, both in earlier times and particularly in our own day, prepare balance sheets to see whether it is profitable for them to continue conducting their business in the same way. From these accounts they draw their results and conclusions, and they close their shops for several days. A notice says, “Closed from such-and-such a date until such-and-such a date for inventory and accounting,” and so on. A person also lives as a merchant; he conducts trade. In what? In matters concerning his soul. He conducts business and has profits and losses, debits and credits, pluses and minuses. If he were willing to settle accounts with himself, he would see whether—if he wished to be called prudent—
he ought to conduct himself in the same way during the coming year, within the further span of time God gives him. As you yourselves know, all the effort made in these days—not only by us, I would say, but by the whole world—has gone into obtaining better clothes, different furnishings, pleasant company, and a finer meal, so that these desires might be satisfied during the holidays. But there has been no discussion about the soul. The inner man did not enter the new year differently; he did not enter it relieved of his burden, so to speak. He entered carrying the same sins. You know how worldly people generally enter the new year.
They say they are going to welcome the year. Foolish people wait to welcome the year. For example, they gather with friends in the evening before the radio or television and wait to welcome the year—to hear the clock strike twelve and know that they have now entered the new year. They exchange good wishes and raise their glasses, as you know. One might say that, to a large extent, even these things are harmless. But this is not the heart of the matter. They turned off the lights, as you know, and drew a dividing line between 1980 and
1981, as though saying, “We are now leaving the darkness behind; we are closing you, 1980, and coming out into the light of 1981.” Illicit couples kissed; blasphemers, fornicators, adulterers, adulteresses, thieves, swindlers, and dishonorable people exchanged good wishes—on paper, at least—for they had left nothing behind. Listen to me: had they changed?
No. They entered ’81 exactly as they were. There is an old story that the little, clean birds once complained about the magpie: “Look at you, you great, filthy bird! What have we done to deserve this? Your nest is full of filth, and you make us dirty.” “If you speak to me like that,” she replied, “I shall have to leave.” Then one of the little birds said to her, “Wherever you go, Madam Magpie, you will take yourself with you, and you will soil that place as well.” What happiness, then, will this year possess, and how can the year itself change? You and I have not changed for even a moment; we remain the same. We merely changed our suit, the person in our embrace, our illicit bed, or the method of our fraud. We ourselves did not change.
Did we leave anything behind when we crossed over into the new year? To show that a person ought to change with the new year, people in earlier times had a custom of making a two-faced human figure. From one side you saw one person; when you went around to the other side, you saw another. The figure on this side represented the old year, portrayed as an old man—sullen, filthy, and so repulsive that you could hardly bear to look at him. On the other side, you saw a handsome young man, and so forth. This was how they depicted and imagined the old year and the new. Yes, it is a beautiful image, but what happens in reality? This is only a type. Does such a change truly take place? Have we left the shadow and passed into the light? Have we left the Law and come into grace? Have we left Moses and passed over to Christ? That is the question. People did not make this reckoning by the thirty-first of the month at the latest; they crossed into the new year still burdened with debt. Nothing changed. What improvement, then, can the new year bring us when an illness remains
and continues producing painful effects every day? If we also remain with the same weaknesses and the same faults, what difference does it make that I now write ’81? What difference? I may need the date ’81 for my business dealings and social relations. But ’81 is of no use to my soul unless I make use of it and regard that as my duty. The things I needed to do in the past but neglected, I must do now. I must thank God and promise Him: “For as much time as You add to my life, know that I will always use it for Your glory and in service to my neighbor. I will strive to fulfill the two commandments: ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your soul, with all your heart, and with all your understanding,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’”
“Give me as many years as You know I need. But if You see that I will not use Your good gifts rightly, then for my own good take me from this life, so that I may be condemned less severely. If I am going to be condemned, take me at least so that my condemnation may be less.” For this reason, we should not be quick to pass judgment on the many people whom we know to have died in sin. Someone says, “God ought to have given him more time to repent.” God knows whether he would have repented or not. God did what was best and most beneficial, and He acted more rightly than our own reasoning and our supposed compassion would suggest.
We think of Christ as harsh when death is concerned, as though He used death as a punishment. This is mistaken; it is not so. Even when God permits death, it is a blessing for the person, because He knows how that additional time would have been used and whether it would have increased or decreased the weight of his debt. He knows. We must never dictate a span of time to Him or demand it from Him. And if we do ask Him for time, we must add this qualification: “Not as I will, Lord, but as You will.” For He Himself asked not to receive the cup of death: “Let this cup pass from Me.” But He added, as it were in parentheses, “Not as I will, Father, but as You will.” This is what I say; this is what the flesh says.
I fear death, and I fear it because I fear judgment. That is the final analysis. The fear of death is, on the one hand, unbelief concerning the world beyond—the unknown place to which we are going—and, on the other hand, the knowledge that I will be called to account. For the moment the curtain closes on my life, judgment follows. After death comes judgment. I no longer have the opportunity to repent, to make confession, to receive Holy Communion, or to do those things that would prepare me to stand before Christ. That is why I fear death. For the most part, those who fear death are people who have not put their accounts in order and whose reckoning with God remains unsettled. These are the people who fear death. Others do not fear it in the same way. They may fear it from another perspective.
As I told you, they may fear it because of the unknown or because of humility: “Am I worthy? Will I be able to stand before the judgment?” And so they fear. Christ tells me, “You are all right; you will not be condemned.” Yet in my humility, I do not even believe this—I do not even believe Christ in this regard. Out of humility, I do not believe that I am worthy. Secondly, I have done nothing, and I would like You to give me more time so that I may do something. For if we read the lives of the Fathers, we find that Saint Pachomius died at the age of ninety and wept on the day of his death. They asked him, “Do you too, Abba, fear death—you, a man who has raised the dead and lived a holy life?” He replied, “From the day I came here
I have feared death.” From the very day he first became a monk, he began to fear death. For the person who does not fear death also has no fear of God. This does not mean fearing death merely as death—fearing that you will decay, be placed in the earth, be eaten by worms, or lie in the cold graveyard. Not that kind of fear. It means fear concerning the soul. Saint Pachomius said, “I have feared death ever since I came here.” Saint Arsenius the Great, who also had raised someone from the dead, used to say, “Grant us more time, Lord, so that I may make a beginning of metanoia, of repentance.” Many of us believe that we have repented. In a general sense we may have repented, but in particular matters we remain unrepentant.
How will you repent of sins when you do not even know that they are sins and have never confessed them? We remain unrepentant of sins that have escaped our notice, sins committed unknowingly. We remain unrepentant of things we do not even know are sinful. Who will confess them after we die? There is no confession there. You may repent and repent and beat your head there, but you have left Dimitri up here. Your soul is there, but your soul did not sin by itself; it sinned in partnership with the body. Dimitri is neither the soul alone nor the remains alone. He is both together. The soul is Dimitri’s soul, while the body is his remains, what is left of Dimitri. Together they are Dimitri, and it was Dimitri who sinned. Where will that partnership be brought together again so that these matters can be set right? Who knows whether you will still be here in the morning?
People have gone to sleep at night and never risen in the morning. How many have set out for work and not returned home alive that evening? How many have gone on a journey and never returned to their nest, to their home? Who knows whether he will be the next? That is why there is fear and trembling. If this time is not used well, it becomes a responsibility even for those who have advanced to some degree in the spiritual life. God’s forbearance makes every person accountable: He still allows us to see, hear, feel, move, and so forth. For what did He say? “Work while it is day, for night is coming when no one can work.” When does night come for a person? At death, night has fallen for him. Do not speak to me about age—old man, young man, adolescent, youth, or whatever else.
Age has nothing to do with it. Everything depends on the soul. The body may be old, but what kind of soul does it contain? The body is a decaying cage. What is inside that cage—a goldfinch or a raven? What is within matters, not what is without. The outer body, being material, will undergo corruption. It will suffer the decay imposed by the laws of nature; no one will escape it. But the outward body is not the real issue. One day we shall receive it anew. It will be sown in corruption, and we shall receive it in incorruption. We shall sow earth and receive spirit. That is what we are doing here. Read the fifteenth chapter of Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians, and there you will see how we shall become new human beings. Read the thirty-seventh chapter of Ezekiel, which contains the prophecy of our re-creation.
It tells how we shall receive our remains again; how they will be given sinews, flesh, and skin; how they will receive spirit; and how we shall become human beings again and live in a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. These things are written. If we are ignorant and raise other objections, it is because the words spoken to the Sadducees apply to us: “You are mistaken, gentlemen, because you do not know the Scriptures.” You have never wished to read them. Yet everything is written, and answers have been given to all these questions that people regard as mysteries of the life beyond. No—a person can know from this life where he is going. The Christian who makes good use of his time, who reads, listens, pays attention, prays, and believes, travels with his eyes fixed on the destination. All the others are also traveling,
but they have turned their seats around and are looking backward. Yet there is a final stop for the one and for the other. One day the trolley poles will come down, and then everything will change. Then we shall realize that we should have been willing to face these matters directly and see clearly where we were going. God has not left us in darkness or at some crossroads where we need a new compass. Everything is written. But I repeat: we do not wish to go deeply into it. As Christians, then, how should we live? We should make everything depend upon Christ. Whatever time He has added to our lives, we should give back to Him: “I thank You for honoring me with this treasure of a new year. But I beg You, help me make good use of it. Illumine me, so that I may know what purpose it is for.” And even if we suppose that I possess virtue and am ready to depart,
He may be adding time to my life so that I may fulfill another role. He may wish to use me for the sake of someone else. Even then I must say, “I am not worthy.” We must not become conceited and think, “I was ready to depart, but God needs me.” God needs you? How could that be? If He entrusts you with more time and gives you more work, it is so that you may receive another crown. That is the reason. Have you ever read the Life of Saint Konon? There you will find the conversation between the Honorable Forerunner and Saint Konon. Some of you may know it, and some may not. I shall tell you how it happened.
In the wilderness of the Jordan, where our Christ was baptized, the Holy Monastery of the Honorable Forerunner remains to this day. It is in Jewish territory, where there is a state of war; you cannot go there now, my friends. Once, the monastery’s abbot died. The Patriarch asked an ascetic named Konon to go and serve as abbot until he could find someone else to send, so that the monastery would not close. Many people went there, including those who were coming to the true faith and wished to be baptized, so the monastery needed to remain open. Konon obeyed the Patriarch and went. But among those who came to be baptized were women. When the elder, who had spent sixty years in ascesis, found himself having to baptize women,
he began to be troubled, for he had never seen a woman. The elder came under attack. It was not that his flesh itself was responding; the assault was spiritual. Satan began to wage war against him. The elder felt as though the ground beneath his feet were giving way. He sent word to the Patriarch to send someone as quickly as possible, because he was leaving. Otherwise, he would lose all his spiritual struggles and everything he had accomplished until then. The Patriarch made him a promise, but no replacement arrived. One day the elder gathered his possessions. All he had was a small bag and a staff. He put the bag over his shoulder and set out. But when he reached the door leading into the wilderness from the great monastery of the Honorable Forerunner, there was the Honorable Forerunner himself, coming toward the monastery.
They greeted one another. Konon saw him and recognized him as the Honorable Forerunner, the master of the monastery. The Saint asked him, “Where are you going?” “I am leaving, Saint,” he replied. “You are leaving? Then what will happen now? Who will baptize the people here? I baptized here once, but who will now baptize those who come to the faith?” “But, Saint,” Konon answered, “I shall lose my soul.” The Forerunner said to him, “Go back, and I shall help you.” “If you will truly help me, I shall go back. But if you do not help me, I will not return.” “No,” he said, “I shall help you.” So Konon returned. People continued to come and go, Christians and others, and the same temptations continued, but the Saint did not help him. Konon gathered his things again. The Patriarch still had not sent anyone, so he left. As soon as he went out, there stood the Honorable Forerunner once more. The result was
the same conversation. “Go back,” the Saint told him. “This time I shall help you.” He persuaded Konon to return, and he went back. Yet once again the Saint did not help him. After staying a few days and suffering fierce temptation, Konon gathered his things and left. And there the Saint was again. “Get away from me, you liar!” Konon cried. He drove him off and pushed him away. The Saint said, “Do not leave.” “Go away! You too are a liar. Get out of my sight!” Then, in the midst of this trial, the Saint said, “Wait. Let me tell you something, and then you may leave. Have you not wondered why I did not help you?” “What do you mean? Did you not promise me?” “I did not help you because I wanted you to struggle and receive a crown and a reward. If everything is accomplished by grace alone, without your struggle, you receive no reward.” Then he said, “Very well, come here and lift your garment.” Konon lifted his garment, and the Saint made the sign of the Cross over his navel.
He told him, “Now you may return.” The elder went back to the monastery. From then on, whether he saw flesh, a woman, or anything that had formerly tempted him, he felt nothing—but now there was no reward for struggling. Do you understand? The matter has many sides; it can be seen from many perspectives. A person must therefore ask Christ to grant him the ability to see each situation from the perspective Christ intends. We must not reduce everything to our own conversations: “You know, we were at work, and one man said this, or some woman said that, or an educated person said something else.” What does Christ desire? I do not care what those people said. I have no interest in every fool’s opinion or every two-headed notion. Did you personally ask Christ about this matter? Christ is the Master of every person—of everyone together, but also of each one individually.
He is the Master of the whole world. He has authority over me. Do you believe that you belong to Christ and that, in a certain sense, He makes use of you? Have you ever read the story of Thomas, when Christ sold him to that Indian official so that he would accompany him to India? The lot had fallen to Thomas to go and preach in India, but he had lost courage. He did not know where India was or what would happen there. But Christ, being God, knew. At that time, an envoy of the king of India was in Jerusalem, searching for an architect to build a palace there. Christ approached him and said, “I hear that you are looking for someone.” “Yes,” he replied, “I am.” “I have a servant who is a great architect and knows how to build everything you need.” The official was delighted, and Christ sold Thomas to him. Christ sold him.
Christ received the gold and signed Thomas over to him. Then, the next day, Christ quietly departed. Forgive me—first the official asked Thomas, “Is it true that you are this man’s servant?” “Of course,” Thomas replied. “He bought me at a very great price. Certainly I am His servant.” Not a servant in the way people usually mean it. This is a very wise form of servitude. The person who becomes a servant of Christ is very wise, while the one who becomes a servant of a prostitute, a fornicator, a thief, a liar, an unbeliever, or a blasphemer is exceedingly foolish. The one who becomes Christ’s servant is very wise, because he does so willingly; Christ enslaves no one.
A person freely makes himself a servant of Christ. On another occasion I mentioned something important connected with this, and I shall add it here: “He bought me at a very great price.” Does a person truly believe this? Christ did not buy each person with gold. In that story He sold Thomas, received the money, and then gave the money to Thomas. The next day He said, “Take the money we received from him; you will need it on this journey,” and He gave it to him. But as for us, “you were bought at a price”—at the tremendous price of the blood He shed. Sometimes we say, “I shed blood to acquire this, and you simply throw it away.” How deeply you feel it, how much it hurts, how it tears you apart when you have labored for something.
You did not merely become tired; you sweated, kept watch through the night, perhaps injured your body while doing the work, or lost your health. Christ shed blood—and not my blood, the blood of a thief, a fornicator, an adulterer, or a liar, but the blood of God. No expert in valuation could tell us the worth of a single drop of God’s blood. If a person reflects on this, he will live through his allotted time with restraint and will tremble at every minute granted by God’s goodness, asking whether he is using it for good or failing to use it well.
That is what I wished to say as I bring these thoughts to a close. I do not know how each one of us regards the time he has been given or what thought he has given to it. Look carefully at what you lack, and correct it. Some need soles, scissors—everything.
They have made nothing at all; they have not even bought the cloth. Others have bought it and left it on the bedside table. Some have not yet cut it; others have cut it but have not basted it. Some have basted it; others have begun sewing and completed only part of it. One person’s garment lacks sleeves, another’s a collar, and another’s buttons. Each person is a seamstress sewing the garment of his own soul,
the garment in which he will appear on that day. This entire reckoning takes place in Christ’s Church, the Orthodox Church, and through the Mysteries—above all through metanoia, repentance, and confession. It begins by acknowledging Christ as Creator, God, Ruler, Master, Redeemer, Judge, and everything else that He is. Forgive me for speaking in this way. But if we are willing, let us make good use of this time. Let us turn back and use it well—something I pray may be granted through the prayers of all the faithful, of the Saints, of the Fathers, and of the Most Holy Theotokos. Amen.

επιπλέον ευθύνη. Γιατί, Θεέ μου; Γιατί κάθε ημέρα, εάν δεν χρησιμοποιείται καλώς, χρεώνεται κακώς. Ο άνθρωπος δεν χρεώνεται μόνο για ό,τι κακό κάνει. «Δεν έκανα κακό». Τι καλό έκαμες, θα μου πεις; Διότι, λέγει ο Ιάκωβος, «ειδότι ουν καλόν ποιείν και μη ποιούντι, αμαρτία αυτώ εστίν». Δεν είναι ότι «εσκότωσα; Εγώ δεν εσκότωσα και κατά συνέπεια δεν ευθύνομαι. Τι έκανα; Έκλεψα, εβλασφήμησα, κατηγόρησα; Δεν ξέρω τι έκανα και ημάρτησα». Αλλά και τι καλό μπορούσα να κάνω, που μου έδωκε δύο χρόνους, που με ανέχθη ο Θεός, και δεν έκανα;
1981, και πλέον φεύγουμε από το σκοτάδι, σε κλείνουμε 1980, και βγαίνουμε στο φως του 1981. Φιληθήκαν τα παράνομα ζευγάρια, ευχηθήκαν οι βλάσφημοι, οι πόρνοι, οι μοιχοί και οι μοιχαλίδες, επάνω στο χαρτί, οι κλέφτες, οι κατεργαραίοι, οι άτιμοι, γιατί δεν έχουν αφήσει τίποτα. Άκουσον με, είχαν αλλάξει;
θα μετανόητης Αμαρτήματα που δεν ξέρουμε ποια είναι αμαρτήματα και δεν τα έχουμε εξομολογηθεί. Είμεθα αμετανόητοι σε αμαρτήματα που μας έχουν διαφύγει, εν αγνοία. Είμεθα αμετανόητοι σε πράγματα που δεν ξέρουμε ότι είναι αμαρτία καν. Ποιος θα τα εξομολογηθεί αυτά όταν πεθάνουμε; Δεν έχει εκεί, δεν έχει εξομολόγηση. Μετανοείς, μετανοείς, χτυπάς το κεφάλι σου εκεί πέρα. Αλλά τον Δημήτρη τον έχεις αφήσει επάνω. Εκεί είναι η ψυχή σου. Δεν ημάρτησε η ψυχή σου, ημάρτησε συνεταιρικά η ψυχή σου, ημάρτησε με το σώμα. Ο Δημήτρης δεν είναι η ψυχή ούτε το λείψανο. Τα δύο μαζί είναι. Η ψυχή είναι η ψυχή του Δημήτρη, το δε σώμα είναι το λείψανο, το υπόλοιπο του Δημήτρη. Τα δύο μαζί είναι ο Δημήτρης και ο Δημήτρης ημάρτησε. Πού θα βρεθεί ο συνεταιρισμός να γίνει ξανά αυτός, για να τακτοποιήσει τα θέματα αυτά; Ποιος ξέρει αν το πρωί θα υπάρχεις;
