Summary
The Church prepares believers for Christ’s Nativity by recalling the prophecies, ancestors, genealogy, and miraculous manner of the Incarnation. Believers must prepare for Holy Communion through repentance, confession, reconciliation with God and neighbor, and sincere examination of conscience. The parable of the Great Banquet warns against allowing possessions, work, bodily pleasures, and excuses to outweigh God’s invitation, while generosity toward those unable to repay is rewarded at the resurrection.

When there is a great event, our Holy Church frames it with a Sunday before and a Sunday after. In this case, the great event before us is the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ. Today we are on the Sunday before this great event, and that is precisely why today is called the Sunday before the Nativity of Christ. Afterward we shall have another great event, the feast of Theophany. There too we shall have a Sunday before and a Sunday after.
The same is true of the Exaltation of the Precious Cross, another great event that also has a Sunday before and a Sunday after. The Sunday before an event always speaks of and presents the types, images, and prophecies concerning the subject that the Church chiefly wishes to proclaim. The event itself is the central theme, while the Sunday after presents its moral teaching. Today, as we stand before this great and unrepeatable event—the Incarnation of God—we are presented with certain matters that the Church considered it her duty to bring before society, so as to orient people toward this great historical event and, above all, toward the person at the heart of it. She has spoken to us about the genealogy and about the manner of God's birth. God became man so that man might once again become god by grace. This is what a person must learn, understand, experience, and keep constantly before his eyes. The Nativity of Christ is not merely a feast that creates pleasant occasions in people's lives. The Nativity of Christ is the one unique event,
something that moves—and ought to move—every human being, because Christ became man for all humanity. He was crucified upon a four-armed Cross, showing that He was crucified for people throughout every breadth and length of the earth, in all four points of the compass. He did not come only for the Jews. He did not come only for the Greeks, nor for any other particular race. He came for the whole world, provided that people are willing to listen to Him and do what He taught and entrusted to His Orthodox Church. I do not know what our attitude toward this event is today. We shall celebrate, but most of us
will not truly live this event. Merely celebrating it is like taking a walk without going deeply into what the event itself truly means. Was it necessary for God to come to man? Was it necessary for Heaven to visit mankind? And do we need to pay attention to this? Or shall we take only the things that come from these feasts—the holiday from work, the opportunity for company, and the extra month's salary, as we used to call it? It would not be enough merely to receive these things. And if they are not enough, then we must also take an interest in Him who created them all and gives them all. Yet, unfortunately, we are
inconsistent. How necessary it is for us not merely to dwell on what comes from this person, but to receive the person Himself. And most of the baptized—I am not speaking about the indifferent, the atheists, the materialists, or those who remain unmoved. I am speaking of those who claim to be Christians, maintain a Christian appearance in their homes, generally profess Christianity, take pride in attending Church, and do so many other things required by the faith. Even they are found wanting, not as they ought to be, especially during these days, which move even those who are otherwise indifferent. Something strange took place:
a conception unlike ordinary conceptions. You heard the genealogy of Jesus, from Abraham down to Joseph the Betrothed, the man presumed to be Mary's husband, and of her Christ was born. From what you know about how conception ordinarily occurs and how human beings come into the world, you also heard that something extraordinary took place in the conception of Jesus. Scripture says, “Before they came together, she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit.” To many people—and especially to our young people and those considered educated by worldly standards—this is nonsense, sheer nonsense; they regard it as a joke. And even if some profess to believe it in words, that is only how they believe it;
they do not believe it with living faith. They say yes, but inwardly they do not accept it. How can this be? Ask your mother, who takes basil from the Cross, uses it to start leaven, and then makes bread and prosphora for you. How does that little flower taken from the wood of the Cross possess the power to give life to flour bought from the grocer? And yet it becomes leaven; it rises and comes alive. How does it come alive? Through the grace of the Holy Spirit. How is water preserved after the priest reads the prayers over it? Through the grace of the Holy Spirit; from dead water it becomes living water. Something similar
happened in this giving of life as well. “That which is conceived in her, Joseph, is of the Holy Spirit.” Not that which is born of her, but that which is conceived in her. A child will come to life within her, but no man will beget that child within her, as Abraham begot Isaac through Sarah, Isaac begot Jacob through Rebekah, and Jacob begot children through Rachel. No. Notice how beautifully today's reading expressed it. It says, “Abraham begot Isaac”; it did not say that Sarah begot him. “Isaac begot Jacob”; it did not say that Rebekah begot him. “Jacob begot Judah and his brothers”; it did not say that Rachel begot them.
The man begets, and the woman gives birth. But when the genealogy reached Joseph, who was presumed to be Mary's husband, it said, “of whom Christ was born.” But how is it that until this point the men beget, whereas now the woman gives birth? Here we have another kind of conception, and the Gospel goes on to explain: “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was in this manner”—that is, through the Holy Spirit. Do not ask how. Where God acts, there is no place for the question how. Do not ask. Our Most Holy Theotokos asked this as well: “How shall this be, since I know not a man?” She was not given an explanation of how. Man was not created capable of comprehending the divine uncreated energies of the Holy Spirit. One would have to be God, to be the Holy Spirit, to be Christ, in order to understand how God, how Christ, and how the Holy Spirit work. Into man's hand was placed
a white staff called faith, like the staff given to the blind so that they may walk safely and not lose their way. Unfortunately, people have cast this faith away. They do not want to live by faith; they regard it with scorn. People who want to solve everything through knowledge imagine themselves clever. That is why people today demand proof. They do not want to hear; they want to see. But God does not answer in that way. Our Most Holy Theotokos asked, yet she received no explanation. The angel did not say, “I was sent to tell you how it will happen.” He was sent to tell her what would happen. And that is what I tell you. Unfortunately, many of us stand before this supernatural mystery and refuse it. It is not irrational; it is supra-rational,
beyond human reason. And precisely because there is no humility, we do not accept it. We celebrate the Nativity of Christ; as I said, we hold festivities, enjoy holidays, and receive gifts—all because of this birth. Yet we push the birth itself aside and refuse to enter deeply into it. When a person follows this path, he is inconsistent. And let him know that Christ is not mocked. He asks for simplicity of heart—the simplicity of the shepherds and the simplicity of the all-wise sages known as the Magi, learned men with every qualification, who went and worshiped an infant as God, as King, as sacrificial victim, and as Redeemer. Where do they see His kingship, that they offer Him gold? Where do they see His divinity, that they offer Him the other gifts they brought?
They see all these things in an infant. These are the eyes of faith. Blessed are those who possess the complete faith of the shepherds. “Let us rise,” they said, “and go down to see those things of which God has spoken to us tonight.” But how do you know it was God and not Satan who spoke to you and told you that a child had been born down there? Who was it? And how can you go there believing it is God? Can God possibly be born in a manger? And yet they set aside all human reasoning and every merely human consideration. They even left their sheep exposed to the wolves so that they could go and see what Heaven had revealed to them that night. We are not required to make such sacrifices. We need only lay down our ego and acknowledge that what we profess outwardly to be true truly is true,
and that it was done out of God's love for us. We would never have done such a thing. We do not even sacrifice ourselves for those dearest to us. He sacrificed Himself for His enemies, because all humanity was His enemy. And this is the astonishing thing: He loved us when we did not yet even know it. This above all ought to move us during these days. I would like to speak about a bad habit people have during the great feasts. At the great feasts, people weigh themselves, measure themselves, and examine themselves on their own—and then pronounce themselves innocent. They issue themselves a certificate declaring: “You are innocent; you are an angel. You have neither murdered nor stolen, so you may approach and receive your reward,”
your reward—that is, receive your God and partake of the Body and Blood of your Christ, your Redeemer. Among so-called Christians, this is treated as though it were the Kingdom of Heaven.
Yet our life is governed instead by the five senses—the five pairs of oxen we heard about in Church last Sunday. We swallow iniquity like water, when we ought to cleanse and prepare ourselves before approaching. “But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup.”
People known to no one in the Church, people who have no relationship with the Church and do none of the things the Church teaches, come forward to commune with their God simply “for good luck” or as a festive custom. They are moved by habit—perhaps family habit or tradition; I do not know. This is wrong! A person must take heed. Christ must not enter an unclean place. If some important person, as we regard him, is coming to our home, we turn everything upside down. We move the furniture and rugs, dust, clean, whitewash, and polish everything, because a man is coming who is often unworthy and, judging by his life, cannot even truly be called a man.
He is not a true man but less than human. And still we clean and arrange everything. Yet when we are about to receive Jesus, to receive our God, the King of kings, and enter into communion with Him, there is no order at all, no preparation at all. Or, so as not to speak absolutely, the preparation is inadequate and this putting of things in order is inadequate. A person must know that he has both body and soul, that he is both material and spiritual. He takes care to keep his body clean, washing almost daily—once, twice, three, four, or even five times a day, according to how dirty he becomes.
He ought to do something similar for his soul. No one ever takes something precious and puts it into a dirty vessel. He will wash the vessel, smell it, and hold it up to the sunlight before placing anything inside. Where, then, shall we cast Christ? Where shall we place Him? How can people who harbor hatred, who are not at peace with their fellow human beings, who are not at peace with God, and who have not attained the two forms of peace proclaimed here by the deacon—“In peace, let us pray to the Lord,” and “For the peace from above, let us pray to the Lord”—how can those who have not fulfilled the two commandments, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength,” and “your neighbor as yourself,” approach the great Peacemaker and receive His Body and Blood during these days, for the forgiveness of sins and
for eternal life, and not unto eternal Hell? Is that possible? I do not know to whom I am speaking. I know no one's life. Christ knows the life of each one of us, including my own, and that is precisely why I speak without singling anyone out. If you feel that any of this reminds you of something, calls you back, or lays an obligation upon you, then do not approach Holy Communion until you have settled your accounts in Holy Confession. Do not absolve yourselves of your own sins. Not even the spiritual father who absolves the sins of others is able to absolve his own. It makes no difference whether he is a simple hieromonk or a Patriarch—even the Patriarch of Patriarchs.
He cannot absolve or forgive his own sins. Someone else must absolve him; he must kneel before another, and another priest's epitrachelion must be placed over his head. If, then, the spiritual father through whom Christ forgives the sins of all who approach in metanoia and repentance cannot forgive even one sin of his own, how can we, being laypeople, cleanse ourselves without a spiritual father and issue ourselves a certificate saying that everything is in order and that we may approach the Holy Eucharist? I do not know how you think about this. Our good works, even if they are many, do not present us acceptably before Christ when sin stands between us and Him. On another occasion, from this pulpit, I was counted worthy to offer an illustration:
I once had the grace, from this very pulpit, to use this iconostasis as an illustration. In Solomon’s Temple—the one and only Temple—what you see here as the iconostasis was called the veil, and it is a type, an image, of sin. God is within, mankind is outside, and between them Adam and Eve placed sin, barring the way to the Kingdom. But Christ our God, the New Adam, and the new Eve, whom we see here today, opened a gate through which people may pass into the Kingdom of Heaven. You do not reach Paradise from the café, from an unlawful embrace, from gambling, theft, blasphemy, or aimless pleasure-seeking. If you wish to enter Paradise, you must pass through here, through what is called the Holy Doors.
You must pass through the New Adam and the new Eve, that they may grant you entrance, because the first Adam and Eve had closed the way. When Christ was crucified on Golgotha, the first miracle that occurred was that the veil of the Temple was torn from top to bottom, and this door was opened. So here you must come, O man, and through the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos be reconciled with Christ; then you will be given your ticket to the Kingdom of Heaven. When Christ came among us, He spoke of this in the parable of the Prodigal Son. The prodigal son came to metanoia, to repentance, and all of us are prodigals, some to a lesser degree and some to a greater. No one is without sin. Christ alone is sinless. All the rest of us sin, whether in word, in deed, or in thought, and we all stand in need of repentance.
Christ came and opened this iconostasis, but through our sins, whether small or great, we keep rebuilding this dividing wall and depriving ourselves of God’s blessing. Many imagine that they have deceived Christ and received Holy Communion—that they have received Him. They have not. If they had eyes able to see, they would behold an angel taking the Holy Gift from the liturgical spoon before it reaches them and returning it to the Holy Chalice, when he sees that the person standing there is unclean, unrepentant, has not confessed, and has not put his life in order according to the way appointed by the Church. That is why the prodigal first came and said, “I have sinned.” Yes, I am at fault. His garment was changed, he was given a new one, and only then was the fatted calf slain.
Upon the Holy Altar of the Orthodox there is again a calf: the fatted calf, the Lamb of God, who is sacrificed for the salvation of the world. But a person must change his life and come to metanoia, to repentance. This does not mean that he will never fall again, but that he will rise again; and whenever he falls, he will rise once more. This is why the Church prays, “For a perfect, holy, peaceful, and sinless day.” Yet we, unfortunately, without understanding what is being said, answer through the chanter, “Grant this, O Lord.” But it is false. I do not even desire to live a holy life; I do not even desire to pass the day in peace; I pay no attention at all, as though the chanter had said nothing and as though I had made no response. And because the Church knows that we do not pass even a single day or a single hour without sin, she asks us at least for this:
“For a Christian ending to our life,” the Church then cries out. These great milestones—Pascha, Christmas, and the fifteenth of August—are milestones for people who pay no attention during the other days of the year. At least at these three great seasons, these three great milestones, let them take care to give themselves what we commonly call a service. “My car has travelled so many miles,” a man says, “and it needs servicing.” Your car, which you bought only two months ago, needs servicing. But you, who are forty, fifty, thirty, eighty, or a hundred years old—do you need none? Is there no rust showing on you? Do your valves need no cleaning? Do you need nothing at all? And yet all our preparation comes down to whether there will be turkey the day after tomorrow,
or lamb, whether our relatives will come, whether the table will be properly set with its green cloth, and whether there will be good wine and all the rest. All these things are good and blessed, but if you neglect your soul, they are all in vain. A slight fever of 37.1 degrees for two or three days, and you lose them all. Over a temperature of 37.1, you lose everything. God has the power to take away all those things that you imagine are yours to use however you please. Do not be deceived, my beloved. Let us also look within. Wherever there are holy springs at our sacred monasteries, we may read above them a palindromic inscription: “Wash your transgressions, not only your face.” Look within yourself as well, it says. Wash away your sins and your transgressions, and not merely your outward appearance. It is good for us and our children to have new clothes,
and to live in gleaming homes with every modern comfort and convenience. God in His goodness has given us these things. But what use are they if my heart is filthy? What good is a golden cage if inside it I keep a sparrow, a raven, or a reptile? Better for the cage to be made of reeds or grass and to contain a nightingale, a dove, or a swan. That is what matters. So I do not know what your disposition is or how you are preparing. Are you preparing only materially for these feasts? Take care, my children: this feast, at least, is not material. It makes no difference that Christ is generous and gives health, money, work, love, and good things. That is another matter. Above all, this feast is spiritual.
Along with everything else that will be found in the home, Christ must also be present in the souls of those seated at the table. I pray that Christ may be with you, through the intercessions of His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, who was counted worthy to cooperate and minister in this great Mystery: “I behold a strange and wondrous Mystery: the cave is heaven, the Virgin the cherubic throne.” She was counted worthy of so exalted a ministry of intercession. May Saint Bessarion, in whom this holy church glories, and all the saints of Meteora also intercede for you. But we too must come to metanoia, to repentance. Seek a spiritual father—seek a spiritual father. Do not waste these days. Otherwise, your Christmas will not be spiritual as Christ has given it to us and as is profitable for our salvation. May God be our helper.
Christmas is only a few days away, and the Church has appointed this season to remind us of certain truths. They are essential for every person who has come into this world and will depart from it at an unexpected hour. He must learn them now, because beyond the grave a person learns nothing new. Beyond the grave there is a fixed state, determined by what one has learned and done in this world. Today is called the Sunday of the Forefathers. It commemorates—that is, it reminds us, as we have said—
those people from whom Christ, when He came into the world, received His human ancestry according to the flesh: Abraham, David, and the others with them. If a person is to reach Heaven, he must come through Christ. Just as Christ made use of human nature, through the Most Holy Theotokos, in order to descend to earth, so we must come through Christ in order to ascend to Heaven. Man’s destiny is not to live upon the earth. Though he is called an inhabitant of the earth, he is really only a tenant here, not a permanent resident. Man was not created to remain on earth.
Man came to earth in order to gain Heaven. He did not come here to remain; he came in order to depart, and he departs in order truly to live. True life is beyond the grave, not on this side of it. The proof is that many live only a few hours, a few minutes, a few months, or a few years. Yet our human nature is eternal; it was not created merely for a limited span of time. A person must understand this. And all people were created for the Kingdom of Heaven, provided that they are willing to put into practice what Christ taught and handed down here in His Church. I do not know whether this matter has ever concerned you. We come to the Church day after day; when the bell rings, we come to the Church. Yet...
we come into the Church. The Church is the antechamber of Paradise. A person passes through here in order to reach there. When someone comes into this world, the Church receives him with her prayers and blessings. She baptizes him and gives him new birth; she sustains him through Holy Communion; and afterward she sends him forth, saying, “Blessed is the way in which you journey today.” She even has prayers that accompany him beyond the grave.
Beyond the grave, the human person does not cease to exist. The body may return to dust, but the soul is not lost, and the Church accompanies it until the consummation of the ages. From here, through the Holy Eucharist and the memorial services, she continues to care for the soul until the end, when the curtain falls, the judgment takes place, and each person goes to his appointed place, where he can no longer either receive help or offer it. I do not know whether you noticed the Gospel passage appointed for today. It is an answer to all those who are inattentive and seek to justify themselves by various circumstances in this world. The occasion for Christ to tell this beautiful parable of the Great Banquet arose when a man...
was present at a meal to which Christ had been invited. They invited Him to dine, and there Christ gave them a lesson. Something one of the guests said in response became the occasion for Him to tell the parable. What had Christ said? “Take care,” He told the man who had prepared the meal. “Do not invite the rich, your relatives, or your friends to your celebrations,
setting a table for them so that tomorrow they will set one for you, and then someone else will host the next meal, while you simply repay one another. You will gain nothing from that. If you wish to offer a meal, offer it to someone poor, to someone blind, to someone lame, to someone in need who has no means to repay you.
If you invite the rich and eat together today, then tomorrow eat at his house and the next day at another friend’s house, nothing is gained. If you wish to spend your money and offer a meal, give it to people who cannot repay you; then you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” Someone there understood that Christ was speaking of things beyond this life, pointing toward another banquet in the Kingdom of Heaven, and he said, “Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the Kingdom of God.” Blessed indeed. This was the occasion on which Christ told the parable known as the Great Banquet, which another Evangelist, Matthew, also records in addition to Luke. What did Christ say? A certain man prepared a great banquet.
He invited many people. He sent out his servants and said, “Go and tell those who have been invited to come. Behold, everything is ready.” But, as you heard, they all began to make excuses. One said, “I have bought a field and must go to see it.” Another said, “I have bought five yoke of oxen and am going to test them.” Another said, “I am newly married and cannot come.” A whole cartload of excuses. Pay close attention to such words, for they possess eternal authority and concern every one of us who passes through this world. The tickets that take us from this world to the next, my beloved, are one-way tickets. They say only, “You depart and do not return.” That is how it is. Therefore, a person must take care how he passes through this life, because if he finds things amiss in the next, he cannot come back and correct them.
Sometimes we say, “I will go to Germany, the Philippines, or Canada. If things go well, I will stay; if not, I will return.” There is no returning from the next world. Once we have departed for that place, there is no coming back. Therefore, we must take care with our passage through this life and make good use of it. Behold, everything is ready.
We are the ones being invited. When the bell rings, it is the angel of God saying, “Come, ladies and gentlemen. I will set before you a table, a supper—the Mystical Supper. Here it is. You need bring nothing in your hands; only come yourselves.” But do people come? How many heard the bell today and did not respond?
They heard not only the bell of Saint Catherine’s, but also those of Saint George’s, the Most Holy Theotokos’s, and Saint Demetrios’s. Did they go? They did not.
What percentage of people attend Church, my dear friends? Five out of every thousand. Where are the rest? They have oxen to test, they are newly married and find it difficult to come, or they have bought fields and have work to do. Why do they not come? They do not feel any need for this banquet. But if you have no need for this banquet, you will be left outside that other banquet. You may ask me why. Let me make it perfectly clear. Have you ever heard the Gospel of the Judgment? If you have not heard it, or if you have heard it and do not remember it, let me remind you. After He had divided them into two great groups, He said to those on His right: “Come, you blessed of My Father.” To do what? To inherit the Kingdom prepared for you.
Is that what the Kingdom is like? My Father has had it prepared from the foundation of the world. He calls us to inherit a Kingdom. And who inherits a kingdom—ordinary mortals, or princes, the children of the King? The children of the King. Therefore, since we are destined for the heavenly Kingdom, we must become children of the King. Are we children of the King? We are not. Why? Because the blood of Adam flows through our veins. So how can I become a child of the King and be entitled to the inheritance? I must receive a transfusion of blood from the King, from Christ. And when I receive this transfusion of Christ’s blood, I become a child of the King. I become a brother of Christ and, by extension, a child of God. In this way, I too become an heir.
Why do we need the Mystical Supper? Do you see why we need to come here? Do you see why we need to receive Holy Communion? As we said, Holy Communion is divine communion: He gives me His Body and Blood, changes my nature, makes me a child of the King, and grants me the right to the Kingdom of Heaven. So if I do not come—or if I do come but only look at the Holy Chalice from afar, because I do not want to put an end to my sins and be ready at every moment to commune with Christ—then I do not receive this transfusion of His blood. I do not replace the fallen, counterfeit blood of Adam within me, the blood of sin, with the blood of Christ, which cleanses me from every sin and makes me worthy of the Kingdom of Heaven. When today’s Gospel speaks of this banquet, it means none other than the Mystical Supper.
He calls all people so that He may sanctify them, transform their very being, and prepare them for the Kingdom of Heaven. Yet people are unwilling. They find excuses. Most people are absorbed in material things at this very hour. And until what time, do you think? Do you know? They will keep working until the church doors open at the end of the service and we leave.
They will be tending their shops; others will be occupied with their work or will have gone out for a stroll. In the afternoon they will be free—free for the cinema, for the stadium, for an illicit embrace, for this, that, and everything else. But during the hours of the Divine Liturgy, they are busy. Some will be cleaning their cars, others tending their gardens, and others taking their dogs for a walk, and so on. Satan laughs as they excuse themselves. They have no time for the Church.
They have time for everything else, but no time for the Church. And there is one more detail.
Christ said that a man prepared a banquet—a great banquet indeed. When is supper served: in the morning, at midday, or in the evening? Supper is served in the evening. That is why we also have Compline, the prayer said after supper—if anyone still reads it. What are you saying, sir? You bought oxen and are going to test them? Another says, “I bought a field and am going to see it.” Let me ask you: did you buy a field without first going to see it? Did you throw away your money so lavishly without even seeing the field? You are lying. And now you are going to inspect the field at night? Liars! You bought five yoke of oxen, and now you are going to work them and test them? Did you buy them without testing them, and are you going to test them at night? Another says, “I have married a wife, and I cannot come.”
Did his mother-in-law or his neighbor tell him that once he was married, the Church would no longer receive him, and that he should return to Church only after two years? These are lies. God did not unite you in Holy Matrimony in order to drive you away from the Church. You will observe the appointed days and fasts and come to Church, whether you are newly married or not. Do you see, then, how people lie? Their excuses make no sense, and the parable emphasizes this. It is as though Christ were saying to us: “Whatever excuse you offer for not coming to the banquet I have prepared, where I intend to transform your very being and prepare you for the Kingdom of Heaven, it is inexcusable.” There is no excuse. I am especially struck by the five yoke of oxen. Do you know how the Fathers interpret them? What are the five yoke of oxen in man? They are his five senses, each of which comes as a pair.
Two ears, two eyes, the organs of taste and touch, and so on. And man cares for nothing beyond these things: what he will see, what he will hear, and what he will enjoy. That is all that concerns him. By keeping his senses at work merely to satisfy them, he remains far from the Banquet. And when he remains far from the Lord’s Banquet here, he will also remain far from that heavenly Banquet. “Blessed,” it says, “is he who shall eat bread there.” Yes, but if a person is not remade and prepared here, he will not be blessed there, because this life is the antechamber. The person who does not love the Church does not love God or Christ. Anyone who does not have the Church as his mother, Christ as his brother, and God as his Father is lying to himself.
He may make a clumsy sign of the Cross, wear a prayer rope at his belt, and light enormous candles; but if he does not regard the Church as his mother, does not come here, does not participate in the Mysteries, and does not attend to what he must do, he will achieve nothing. It would have been better for him not to have been born. It is a joy for a human being to be born, but for the one who ultimately fails, it would have been better not to have been born. For Hell has no end, just as the Kingdom has no end. The words spoken by the Church have meaning, but he does not want to hear them. Indeed, we do not want Christ because He reproves our unlawful way of life. The Gospel is not to blame; the priest is not to blame; the preacher who speaks the truth is not to blame. The cause lies elsewhere. The cause is sin. When sin is removed from between us and God, everything will return to its proper place.
Once, as those of you who read may know, there lived in Corinth a deeply corrupt woman named Lais. In her day, a looking glass—a kind of mirror—was invented. What you can buy today for a few coins and everyone can easily obtain was then an extraordinary possession. To own a mirror in those days was a great thing, and when it was first invented it was sold at an astronomical price. Since she earned money abundantly, unlawfully, and without restraint from I do not know how many men, she went and bought herself such a mirror. Those who saw that she had acquired this invention considered her fortunate and important.
The next day, to everyone’s astonishment, they saw her take the mirror down, throw it to the ground in a rage, and smash it into a million pieces. The mirror was not to blame for what it showed Lais. In the same way, gentlemen, the Gospel is not to blame, the preacher is not to blame, the clergy are not to blame, and the Church is not to blame. Our sins are to blame. From the moment we enter into sin, we no longer want the priest. From the moment we enter into sin, we stop going to Holy Confession. Sin is what drives a person away from the path of salvation. If we are willing to put an end to sin, everything will return to its proper place. Therefore, take this very seriously. God, for His part, has done and continues to do His work out of love for mankind.
But if man is unwilling, nothing can save him. Candles cannot save him, incense cannot save him, prayer ropes cannot save him. Do whatever else you please: unless you follow the path shown by Christ—metanoia, repentance, and return—it will avail you nothing. Let us not excuse ourselves by saying that we have no time for the Church. We simply do not want to come. We are not in love with Christ. We are not in love with the Most Holy Theotokos. We are not in love with the Church. If we truly were, we would cross mountains,
seas, and oceans to come. People living abroad travel 150, 200, or 300 miles every Sunday to reach the Church. Yet we live almost beneath the church sanctuary and will not get out of bed. We curse the priest in the morning when he rings the bell because he has disturbed us—because we came home at dawn from gambling, from an illicit embrace, or from corruption. We do not want to hear the bell because it reminds and reproves us. Others have various occupations and do not come to Church. But when the church is empty and our stall here stands empty, our place in Heaven will also be empty. For our training begins here; here we are put in order; and here the tickets for the Kingdom of Heaven are issued. One day, a little boy
asked his mother this question: “Mama, will you go to Paradise?” She was taken aback; she had not expected such a question. “My child,” she said, “I am striving. I am striving, so that Christ may count me worthy to go.” “And will I go to Paradise too, Mama?” asked the little boy, who was five or six years old. “Will I go to Paradise too?” “Yes, my child. God desires to bless you and bring you there. He desires the salvation of the whole world.” Then the child said, “Papa will not go, Mama.” “Why not?” she asked. The child was making a prophecy about his father. “Why will he not go?” “Papa has no time. He has the shop.” His father had no time for the Church, no time for the sermon, no time for prayer, and no time for Holy Confession.
“Papa has the shop,” he said. “He has no time to go to Paradise.” That is a profound saying. Listen: do you know what is said? Only when a house is on fire on all four sides and a person cannot get up or escape is he excused from being in Church. Those who want neither the Church nor the Mysteries of God have already shut themselves out of the Kingdom of Heaven. I do not know whether you have ever paid attention to these things. If you have not, then please do so now. Let us make good use of this time, these few days that lead us to the manger of Bethlehem, where we shall behold God who became man—and He became man for no other reason than our salvation. Thank you.
We leave burdened with our sins because we do not want to lay them down. Sometimes a man avoids a certain street because he owes money to the grocer, the baker, and the greengrocer, and he has nothing with which to pay. So he will not even walk down that street. He sends word: “Tell the priest to come so that we can settle the account; tell the priest to pass by here,” but he himself will not go there. Christ does not speak like that. Christ says, “Come, let us settle the account, and I will forgive your debt.” Christ does not demand payment; sins are forgiven. “Come, let us settle the account, and I will forgive it all.” Why, my brother, do you remain in debt? Why remain in debt? Who told you that you will still be here tomorrow? And what will you say to Christ when you stand before Him laden with your sins?
“Was this why I was crucified—that you should come before Me still carrying your sins? Go down to Tartarus, because it was the devil whom you obeyed and whose works you performed. I offered to forgive you, yet you would not come to Me.” As I close, I will tell you an account that you should take very seriously, so that we may celebrate Christmas as God desires, now that we stand at its threshold. It is said that a great Father of the Church once reached the manger in Bethlehem where Christ was born. When he entered the cave, he was overcome with such deep compunction that he fell prostrate, bowed his head to the ground, and began to cry out: “My Christ, what can I give You? What can I offer in return for all that You have done?” And what do you think was heard from within the cave? “Hilarion, give Me your sins. I want nothing else.” “What can I give You? You already have everything prepared.”
“It is I who give thanks and offer Myself. I sent down the Holy Spirit, and they will prepare Me upon the Holy Altar. Then the priest will come out and proclaim: ‘With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near.’ Come and receive My Blood, so that you may become a child of the King and inherit that Kingdom which My Father has prepared from the foundation of the world.” This is the Kingdom I pray all of us may inherit. Let no one approach Christmas unrepentant and without Holy Confession—no one. Holy Confession and communion with Christ, so that the betrothal may take place here and the wedding there in Heaven. Amen.

υπέρ λόγον. Και διότι δεν υπάρχει ταπείνωσις, γι' αυτό ακριβώς δεν το δεχόμεθα. Εορτάζουμε Χριστούγεννα, κάνουμε εορτές, όπως είπα, κάνουμε αργίες, παίρνουμε δώρα, όλα από τη γέννα, αλλά αυτή τη γέννα τη βγάζουμε στην άκρη, αλλά μην εμβαθύνουμε. Όταν ο άνθρωπος ακολουθεί αυτή την οδόν, είναι ανακόλουθος. Και να γνωρίζει ότι ο Χριστός δεν μυκτηρίζεται. Θέλει απλότητα καρδίας, θέλει απλότητα σαν των ποιμένων, θέλει απλότητα σαν των πανσόφων σοφών, των λεγομένων Μάγων, των ανθρώπων με τα τέσσερα διπλώματα, που πήγανε και ένα παιδί το προσκύνησαν για Θεό, για Βασιλιά, για θύμα και Λυτρωτή. Πού τη βλέπουν τη Βασιλεία και του προσφέρουν χρυσόν; Πού του βλέπουν τη Θεότητα και του προσφέρουν τα άλλα που έφεραν εκεί πέρα;
Εμείς καλούμεθα. Όταν χτυπάει η καμπάνα, είναι ο άγγελος του Θεού και λέει: «Κύριοι, ελάτε. Θα σας παραθέσω τραπέζι, δείπνο, Μυστικό Δείπνο. Ορίστε, δεν είναι ανάγκη να κρατάτε τίποτα στο χέρι σας. Να έρθετε εσείς». Έρχονται οι άνθρωποι; Πόσοι δεν ακούσανε σήμερα την καμπάνα;
Φορτωμένοι εξερχόμεθα. Δεν θέλουμε να τα αφήσουμε. Εάν ένας άνθρωπος δεν περνάει κάποτε από έναν δρόμο, είναι γιατί χρωστάει στον μπακάλη, χρωστάει στον φούρναρη, χρωστάει στον μανάβη. Και δεν έχει... και τον δρόμο του ο άνθρωπος δεν περνάει από εκεί. Και παραγγέλνει: «Πες τον παπά να έρθει να λογαριαστούμε και πες τον παπά να περάσει από εδώ», αλλά δεν περνάει από εκεί. Ο Χριστός δεν λέει αυτό. Ο Χριστός λέει: «Έλα να λογαριαστούμε, να σου τα χαρίσω». Δεν πληρώνεται ο Χριστός και οι αμαρτίες χαρίζονται. «Έλα να λογαριαστούμε, να σου τα χαρίσω». Γιατί, αδελφέ, να μένεις χρεωμένος; Γιατί να μένεις χρεωμένος; Ποιος σου είπε ότι θα υπάρχεις αύριο και τι θα πεις στον Χριστό όταν είσαι επάνω με τις αμαρτίες σου;
