Summary

Students are urged to unite academic learning with fear of God, understood as reverence for God, parents, teachers, and spiritual guides. The second discourse teaches that the Kingdom of Heaven is inherited through adoption as God’s children in Christ, rather than earned merely through good deeds. Believers must remain organically joined to Christ the true vine, trusting His grace while bearing the fruit of good works.

During these few minutes of the Communion hymn, allow me to say a few words that may help you in your lives.

You schoolchildren are gaining an education with the thought that you will use it as a weapon in life.

You do all you can to learn as much as possible.

But I would like to remind you of something else. Your schooling will eventually come to an end. I would like to speak to you about something else that can also be of use to you.

I want to speak to you about a fear that you should have—and must always have—within you. By fear, I mean the respect you should have for your elders and for God. If you study only your school lessons and do not also learn this fear, you will remain uneducated. You may know everything taught at school, but if you have no respect for your elders, your teachers, your parents, and God, you will remain uneducated.

Whatever others may tell you, and however highly you may think of yourselves, in reality you will remain uneducated. This fear—this respect for God and for your elders—is essential. It also gives value to all the effort you put into your studies. Those of you who are older will have read in the Old Testament that when God appeared to Solomon in a dream and asked what he wanted Him to give him, Solomon did not ask for glory, money, power, or might. He asked for understanding.

Wisdom.

This moved God, and God said to him, “Because you did not ask Me for any of those other things, but asked Me for understanding, discernment, and wisdom, I will also give you glory, riches, and power.” So if you gain an education without this understanding that comes from reverence and the fear of God, and if you do not seek illumination from Him, you will never be able to use for good what you learn at your desks. The purpose is for you to become truly human as well. Perhaps you will say, “But are we not already human?” We will discuss that.

A human being is not someone who merely differs outwardly from animals, birds, or other created things. A person must also possess a truly human character. When someone speaks inhumanly and behaves inhumanly, when someone steals, blasphemes, or kills—things that even a wild beast does not do—how can that person be called human and possess a truly human character? It is not enough merely to be called human; one must truly be human. And for a person to become truly human, he must have the fear of God.

That means respect for God and for one’s elders. A person will respect the God whom he cannot see when he respects those whom he can see, those directly beside him: his parents and his teachers. The Church urges us to pray for our parents and teachers, those who have supported us both materially and spiritually. If they had not existed, we would not even have come into this world as living persons. And if there had been no spiritual guides and teachers, we would not even have learned our ABCs. We owe everything to them; therefore, we must thank them and pray for them.

Today, this respect is scarcely found among us adults as it ought to be, nor is it found among you children. This fear, this respect, this recognition—saying to myself, “This person is above me; I need him; I must respect and esteem him; I must take off my hat to him”—is disappearing today. We have all made ourselves equal, and that is not good. Society will be good when its members are different, not when they are all the same. Look at your fingers; look at your hand. The fingers are unequal, yet see what the hand can do: it can form a fist. God made human beings different from one another.

He made them so that each might complete what the other lacks; then society is blessed. We need the scholar, the laborer, the manual worker, the king, the ruler, the student, and the doctor. Everyone is needed. But there must be mutual respect for one another. This is disappearing today, and even a child may speak badly to his teacher, before whom he ought to take off his hat in respect. So I want to remind you of this: be careful. Do not let yourselves be carried away by theories and ideas that lead you astray. But if you have the fear of God—and you will cultivate the fear of God in the Church, not in the town square or on the sports field—

not at the cinema or in front of the television. The fear of God is not cultivated there; outward distraction is cultivated there. Here, the fear of God is cultivated. If, during the week, whenever you are able, you also come here, you will cultivate the fear of God. Through that fear of God, you will put to good use what you learn at your desks, and you will become worthy citizens both of this world and of the world to come. If there were no death, I would not tell you these things. Do whatever you wish. Devour one another and get it over with an hour sooner. But death does exist. Things do not end here, and the human person does not remain here. Therefore, a person must think differently. That is the point. Today you live without the fear of God. You do not have the fear of God.

Most of you do not even fear your parents, your teachers, or your spiritual fathers. Most of you live without restraint. That is the state of things today; that is the fashionable way of thinking. But know that there is Someone watching you, and one day He will bring you to judgment—a judgment concerning your whole manner of life. If you read Ecclesiastes or the Wisdom of Solomon in the Old Testament, you will find this said about your situation. It says to the young person: “Yes, while you are young, put on your hat, go wherever you wish, and do whatever seems right to you,” for the young person cares about nothing. “But know that for all these things God will bring you to judgment.”

One day He will bring you to judgment, and you will give an account for the things you do today in your youth while caring about nothing. And as you read in the newspapers and hear in the news, many people are leaving this world. Of course, as a rule, it is the elderly—we ourselves—who are moving toward death. But death also moves toward the young. How many entire groups of friends are lost? Read the news every morning. How many young people are killed? But remember: those whom death finds did not go looking for it, nor had they grown old. Yet when death goes out to meet them, what becomes of them? Have you ever concerned yourselves with this question? In the old churches, up above on the iconostasis...

Alongside the other sacred images, they also painted an eye, an ear, and a hand. Through its iconography, the Church wished to remind people that there is Someone who sees everything, Someone who hears everything, and Someone who records everything. And that Someone is God. We imagine that if we do something, behave in a certain way, or say something even against God—if we blaspheme Him, or speak against our teacher, our neighbor, our father, or our mother—then, provided no one saw it, we will not have to give an account. And yet these things are recorded. I want you to know from now on that there are three records in which they are written.

There is the record of the human conscience, which records everything good and everything evil. There is another record kept by the devil, and a third kept by the angel. A person’s deeds are recorded simultaneously in three places, and one day these records will be brought forth unless, while still in this world, the person takes care to settle at least his evil deeds in the way God has appointed. Yet many of us sleep peacefully, thinking that we acted in secret, that we managed to escape the notice of our mother, our teacher, our father, the priest, or the prosecutor. Do not let that deceive you. Once, there was a mother...

She was looking after her children while also doing her housework. Little Michael was getting into mischief. He was about to do some damage, and his mother, who could see him, called out, “Michael, no! Do not put your hand into the machine; little Michael, God can see you.” Michael drew back and did no damage. The woman continued with her work. Michael became distracted and put his hand toward the machine again. “Michael, God can see you.” Michael drew back again. But after a while, as though nothing had happened, he took a pair of scissors and began damaging the machine. His mother called out, “Michael, God can see you.” And he replied, “Mama, I shut Him outside, so He cannot see me.” Thank you.

I know that makes you laugh; I know. But I tell it to you because many of you imagine that God is somewhere up in the clouds and cannot see you, since you do what you do in secret. This is what I want to say and teach you: the ear of God hears, the eye of God sees, and the hand of God records your deeds.

Every day, many girls lose their way and ruin their lives. Many boys ruin their lives as well; you know this. They become entangled in drugs, sexual immorality, and corruption. And it is their other friends who cover for them. Their companions are also to blame. No girl simply gets up all by herself and goes off to become corrupted and commit such acts. The others cover for her and conceal what she is doing. They cling to one another like pendants around the neck. It would be better if they gave their friends poison.

It would have been less sinful to give their friends poison, poisoning their bodies so that they died, than to destroy their souls while imagining that they are doing them a service. They carry notes and relay telephone messages for them; they lie to their parents to cover for them, conceal the hours when they were absent from school, and do a thousand other things. I say this because they imagine that God is behind little Michael’s cloud. But God sees, and God records. And woe to us, young and old alike, when we sin without the fear of God. We think we can deceive everyone. You deceived your father, your teacher, the priest, the prosecutor, your male friend and your female friend. But did you deceive God? You did not deceive God. Let me tell you another story that will also make you smile.

It was Christmastime. A father and mother had their parents living at the far end of the village. They told their two children, little George and little Helen, to take a package to their grandfather and grandmother. “It is the holiday season. Take it to them quickly and come straight back.” So they took it and set off. But on the way, little George said, “I’m terribly curious. Let’s open it and see what is inside. It would be so interesting to know. We can still take it to Grandmother, or else turn back.” He wanted them to open it, and eventually he persuaded her. They stopped beside a low wall and opened it. Inside were kourabiedes, Christmas almond biscuits. The boy loved sweets. “Let’s each take one,” he said. He did not say, “Let me take one.” He wanted to make her his accomplice too, so that she could not tell anyone. “Let’s each take one,” he said.

“No,” she said. “Grandfather may have counted them.” “Really?” he said. “Grandfather counted them? Why should we care whether Grandfather counted them?” “But what if he counts them?” little Helen asked. “What if Grandfather counts them? But Grandfather, as you know, cannot read or write. He never went to school, so he is illiterate.” “All right, little George,” she said, “but can God read and write?” “Ah, yes, God can.” So they closed the package. Little George no longer wanted a kourabies, because he realized that God could read and write. Therefore, whatever you secretly devise, whatever you do against yourself or against others, know that there is an eye that sees you. God knows everything; He can read and write, and He will bring us to judgment. If, then, this fear of God is not within us...

This reverence for God—for that is what it means to fear God: I revere God and take Him into account. I fear my father, meaning that I respect my father. I fear my headmaster, meaning that I respect my headmaster. I fear my teacher, meaning that I respect my teacher. So may this fear, which is absent from most children, never be absent from you. It will lead you toward what is good. It will keep you from many ugly things. It will prevent those sins that should never be committed, but which you commit when you have no fear. John Chrysostom says, “If the fear of God were present, sins would not be committed.” A person sins when he has no fear of God. Take care, then. The important thing is not whether you receive a diploma. It is not whether you receive a second one, or even a third.

What matters is whether you become true human beings and, at the same time, Christians: whether you come to the Church, respect your elders and teachers, fear God, and participate in the Mysteries. How many places are there in your homes where you can wash? New houses have two or three. Wherever you get dirty, there is somewhere for you to wash. So it is in the Church as well. If your soul is soiled by a lie, by theft, by a sin of the flesh, or by anything else, come and be washed clean. These days are especially suited to this. It is Christmastime, when we are all preparing to receive Holy Communion. Seek out a spiritual father and confess

your sins, because we all sin. Who has never told a lie? Who has not resorted to some other kind of trickery? We have all done such things. These things must therefore be put away so that we may also become true human beings. For to be human means to be Christian, and to be Christian means to be truly human. A person who is not Christian is not spiritually complete, however educated he may be. Education makes no difference by itself. Christ does not reject education; He desires it, but He desires it as He Himself wills it to be: as John Chrysostom possessed it, as Saint Basil possessed it, and as Saint Gregory possessed it. He desires education joined to the fear of God. The day after tomorrow, you will see Him worshipped by barefoot shepherds, but also by wise men from the East. Christ desires everyone. He does not dwell in people’s heads,

but in their hearts, whether they are educated or uneducated. So do not be satisfied merely with what you learn at school. Attend the Church as well. Take an interest in learning the things of the Church. Fear sin. And you will fear sin and turn away from it if you revere God. The foundation of your salvation and progress, both in this world and in the next, is the fear of God, as Wisdom says in the Old Testament: “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” Do you wish to become both true human beings and Christians, and to stand firm both in this world and in the next? Then fear God and revere Him, and He will give you illumination so that you may also respect your parents, your guardians, and your spiritual fathers. This I pray for all of us and for everyone. Amen. That is all we had time for today.

In the Gospel reading, we should have noticed one detail which, unfortunately, has escaped us because the passage is so familiar. The Apostle and Evangelist Luke has preserved for us a conversation between a man who lived in the days of Christ and Christ Himself. Through this conversation, the man was given an opportunity to consider the way of his salvation. This man...

came to test Jesus, as the Evangelist says. Yet he had noticed one detail in Jesus’ preaching: Christ taught that the Kingdom of His Father is inherited. And so, in his own way, he said to Him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” I do not know what you think, but I have no reason to doubt the sincerity or truth of the fact that this is indeed what Christ the God-Man preached.

He did not preach a kingdom given as wages in return for works, as we have come to believe today. The Kingdom of Heaven is inherited. If you want an even more striking proof, open the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew, beginning at verse thirty-one, and read about the day of Judgment. What will He say? “Come, you blessed of My Father.” And what are they to do? “Inherit the Kingdom of My Father.” When was it prepared? “From the foundation of the world.”

Since the Kingdom of Heaven is to be inherited, what will we present in order to receive it? Will we present our works, or the proof that we are members of the family? For, as I understand it, relatives are the ones who inherit. Suppose someone dies abroad and leaves a vast inheritance worth millions of dollars. What is required? The heirs must appear with documents proving that they are relatives—that they are brothers, children, or cousins—and then they receive the inheritance. Nothing else is needed. The believer knows this.

Today he heard the Apostle Paul say that Christ came into the world so “that we might receive adoption as sons.” Why? So that we might once again become children of God and have a rightful share in His inheritance. If my father casts me off and disinherits me, will I still have a right to his property? This does not require philosophical reasoning. Yet, unfortunately, it is not preached. Satan has managed to cover this truth up, so that the Church is rendered ineffective, because this is precisely the purpose of the Church:

She makes human beings members of God’s own family. If people were willing to look more deeply, especially with all the education they have today, they would pay close attention to these things. Paul states it very concisely today: “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, to redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive adoption as sons.” Is he lying? No, he is not. We are the liars when we say that we are children of God and then rest easy, assuming that when we go to the Kingdom of God, everything belonging to our Father also belongs to us. Really? Are we children of God?

Are human beings children of God? We are God’s creatures; we are His creation. Who, then, are the children of God? Does God have children? “As many as received Jesus, to them He gave the authority to become children of God.” But if they have not received Jesus, if they blaspheme Jesus, if they reject the Church of Jesus, if they do not want the Lord Jesus, and if they do not make use of the Mysteries of Jesus, how can they be children of God? The Kingdom of Heaven, then, is a matter of inheritance. I spoke about this last night as well, and those of you who were present heard the distinction between the role of works and the role of Christ. Let me add something here.

In light of the timely message of today’s Church reading, a person’s works are his suitcases, the traveler’s luggage. What does a traveler need besides suitcases and luggage? His ticket. Is that not so? He travels with his ticket and his luggage. Has anyone ever traveled with luggage alone? You picked up your suitcases and left, but you did not buy a ticket or even concern yourself with one. Are you going to travel, or are you going to stand guard at the airport, the travel agency, or the terminal? “Your ticket, sir.” “I have suitcases.” “Yes, and you may take your suitcases with you. But your ticket, sir.”

Jesus is the ticket, and that ticket is issued here, in this Church. These priests, these sinful innkeepers, are the ones who issue the tickets to the Kingdom of Heaven. Some people traveled to the Kingdom of Heaven without luggage, with only the ticket: the Prodigal Son, the Publican, and the Thief on the Cross. But no one traveled with luggage alone—with works, but without the ticket. As for the elder brother of the Prodigal Son, who had never disobeyed his father, Holy Scripture does not say whether he entered the house.

The Pharisee, who tithed even his mint, did not enter. “I am not like other people. I am not an adulterer, sexually immoral, or a thief,” and so on. Yet the answer was, “Stay outside; you are not fit for Me.” Pay attention to these things. Let us not be deceived or rest on our laurels, imagining that because we are good people, give alms, and help orphans and widows, we will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, while we are not members of the family of God the Father. Some of us do wrong merely by remaining in the Church while the “Our Father” is being said. For when we say the “Our Father” through the chanter—we all say it, though the chanter voices it for us—what if we were to hear a voice from above asking, “In what sense do you call Me Father?” Our knees would give way, as the saying goes. To have God as your Father, you must have Christ as your Brother

and the Church as your Mother. To have Christ as your Brother, you must receive Christ in Holy Communion. Do you receive Christ? Let us look at that now: how many will receive Holy Communion here today? If you do not receive Christ in Holy Communion, then you have no communion, no living relationship, with Christ. And if you have no communion with Christ, how are you a Christian? Is it merely because your identity card says, “I am a Christian”? I must be a brother of Christ so that, by extension, I may be a child of God. God has one natural Son, Christ. “As many as received Christ, to them authority was given to become children of God.”

John says this in the first chapter of his Gospel. I have received Christ; I was baptized into Christ. “As many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” I receive from Christ in Holy Communion; I have communion with Christ. “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” I become one with Christ. Consequently, I become Christ’s younger brother and, by extension, a child of God. Through Jesus, therefore, I become a fellow heir of His inheritance, the Kingdom of God. This is why the Church is necessary. This is why the Mysteries are necessary. This is why priests are necessary. This is why everything Christ has established here is necessary, though for us it has become little more than a habit.

“I go to the Church.” And what do you do when you go to the Church? “I receive the antidoron.” And what do you do with the antidoron? What does the antidoron signify? Take it and see. What will the priest say when you receive it—assuming you do not simply take it from the candle counter, as often happens? What will he say? “May the blessing and mercy of the Lord come upon us.” But when you receive Holy Communion, what will he say? “The servant of God partakes of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins and eternal life. Amen.” One gives eternal life; the other gives “the blessing and mercy of the Lord”—a blessing. By receiving the Body of Christ in Holy Communion, you become one with Christ. By receiving the antidoron, you receive bread representing the womb of the Theotokos (God-bearer), a blessing from the Theotokos so that you do not leave the Church empty-handed.

You must repent, confess your sins, and come here to the Church, to remain in communion and be nourished by Christ, so that you may be Christ’s brother and preserve this kinship. Then, on that day, He may present you to the Father, and you too may have the right to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. As you know, these things remain hidden and covered over. It does not serve Satan’s purposes for man to learn how he is saved. So man rests on his laurels, as I said, because he performs a few good works. By all means, my dear man, do whatever good works lie within your strength. But never put your faith in your works. After all, our works are always calculated and self-serving; they contain the ego. They do not present us before God.

They are extraneous things. Do them, and God will reward you. But to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, you need a ticket. Jesus issues that ticket here, at this Orthodox counter—the Orthodox Church—through His innkeepers. Here it is signed, and here it is sealed in red ink: His Blood. This must become our faith, and we must be living, organic members of the Church, not people who merely come to light a candle. Above us, over the Holy Doors, is the Mystical Supper. From the Mystical Supper, a vine extends on either side. Do you know what this means? Open the fifteenth chapter of John, and you will hear Christ say:

“I am the vine; you are the branches. He who abides in the vine bears much fruit.” Where does the vine begin? At the Mystical Supper, from the Holy Chalice. The branch that remains on the vine draws nourishment and sap from it, and produces leaves, clusters, and grapes. A person who does not draw nourishment from Christ, who is the vine—who does not receive Holy Communion and has communion with Christ only once, twice, or three times a year, and even then without repentance, without confession, and without being reconciled to his fellow men and to God—how can such a person possibly have communion with Christ? “Whoever does not abide in the vine,” He says, “is cut off and cast into the fire.” How many of us are like that!

People who have appointed only certain dates on which to receive Holy Communion do not preserve this communion with Christ. Consequently, they have no communion with life; they are not alive. And if they should suddenly die, where will they go? A person turns to his home three times a day to feed his body. How many times a year does he turn to feed his soul? A table is set here every day. Every day bread is offered in sacrifice and wine is presented, yet man does not come. How can he possess life and preserve his kinship, if he does not receive Christ, who here is changed and offered as the fatted calf upon the Holy Table?

Can such a person be a brother of Christ? “He who does not eat My flesh and drink My blood has no life in himself.” Will you, my dear man, correct Christ’s own words as well? Pay attention to this. Merely coming to Church is not enough. Many people will tell me—and I have no reason not to accept what they say—“I come to Church. I am never absent from Church. I attend Church faithfully.” But what do you do in the Church when you come? Are you nourished by what the Church gives you, by what the Church offers? Are you among the heirs? Consider this carefully: after the priest has given Holy Communion to the faithful, what will he come out and say, holding the Holy Chalice, holding Christ? He will present Christ before you and say, “Save, O God, Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance.” Who is His inheritance?

Those who did not come forward? No. It is those who came forward, those who became one with Christ, those who received Christ in Holy Communion, those who were united with Christ, those who became of one body and one blood with Christ. They are His inheritance. Then you will make use of everything properly and see everything rightly. But as long as sin stands in the way, you will shape everything according to your own measure.

One day you will discover that you have been deceived. We are deluded, my beloved. I do not wish to speak about the rest of the Gospel. I do not wish to speak about the admirable deeds of this young man, who said, “All these things I have kept from my youth. I have neither stolen, nor lied, nor murdered. I have honored my father and my mother.” Yet here we are, well into the twentieth century, and despite the grace of God we do none of these things. We are liars and thieves; we act irreverently, cast our parents aside, fail to respect them, and do every manner of evil. And still God bears with us. I do not wish to speak about that. Everyone today is capable of understanding; everyone knows a great deal, if only he is willing to use that knowledge for good. And since today’s reading has brought us to this subject, many people also speak...

...often against people who have money. Wealth in itself is neither good nor evil. The blameworthy points are how it is acquired and how it is used: how a person uses it and how he acquired it. Whether he gained it by his own sweat and through careful saving, whether he deprived himself in order to put aside a few pennies, as we say, and how he uses it—all this will be judged. The tongue, likewise, is neither good nor evil in itself; it depends on how it is used: whether it blasphemes God or blesses God, whether it tells lies or speaks the truth. The flesh that makes up the tongue is not itself to blame. So it is with wealth. Wine itself is not at fault; its use is at fault. We cannot simply condemn the rich.

God will condemn them if they used their wealth badly or acquired it dishonestly. Yet I have one thing to say, as the Holy Fathers teach: money never creates happiness, and it can never purchase Paradise. But if it is used well, then matters are different. John Chrysostom, who rebuked the rich so severely, also spoke beautifully about them. “If wealth were evil,” he said, “then God would not send us to Abraham, who was exceedingly rich and had 318 household servants—318 servants—and He would not send us into the bosom of this rich man, if wealth itself were evil.”

That is how it is. The comparison of the camel and the eye of the needle is also beautiful. Christ said, “It is easier...” He did not say it was impossible; He said that it is difficult for those who possess riches to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. This is because they do not place their faith in the Blood of Christ, but in their money, believing that by their own means they will enter—and there they are deceived. Yet He said, “It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a large needle,” through the tiny hole of a sailmaker’s needle, which is indeed difficult if the Greek word for camel is spelled with an eta and refers to the animal. Some prefer to spell it with an iota; then it means the thick rope used to moor ships. If you unravel that rope strand by strand, it can pass through. If you unravel your wealth and distribute it,

then it too can pass through. The words of Christ, my beloved—and with this I conclude—are immortal. Blessed are those who grasp them, and blessed are those who make them their life. These words from today’s Gospel made Saint Anthony the Great what he became. As a young man he was in the Church and heard today’s Gospel. When he heard that the rich man, because he possessed money, did not draw near to Christ to become perfect, to become an Apostle, to become a man of eternity, he said, “What a fool! Imagine that! I will go and sell everything.” And he went, sold it all, and became Saint Anthony the Great. Blessed are such people. We will pass through this wretched life only once. You cannot buy a return ticket. Woe to the person who fails to make good use of this time.

This is a time for metanoia, for repentance—repentance—because man drinks iniquity like water, as Job says in his book, and it is impossible for anyone, even if he lives only one day upon the earth, not to be a sinner. How pitiable are those who believe that because they have not murdered or stolen, they are innocent doves ready for the Kingdom of Heaven! Saint Arsenius the Great lived to be ninety-four and had even raised someone from the dead, yet every day he prayed, “Lord, grant me more time to make a beginning of repentance.” For every fall calls for a rising again, and every sin calls for repentance. Perhaps your eye looked with evil desire; perhaps your hand committed some evil deed.

Perhaps your tongue spoke wrongly; perhaps your flesh was tempted and acted sinfully—you need repentance. And since Christ has given you repentance, why, my dear man, do you not make use of it? You have visited holy shrines where the blessing of water flows, and there you may have seen a palindrome inscribed: “Wash your transgressions, not only your face.” Read backward, it says exactly the same thing: “Wash your transgressions, not only your face.” Do you know what that means? Wash away your sins, it says, your transgressions, and not only your face. We washed ourselves; we bathed last night; we put on our best clean clothes, inside and out, and looked at ourselves in the mirrors—front and back!

We did well, but we did not wash or change the garments of our soul. We came here today carrying the same wickedness and the same sins of the past week. When you come here bearing sin, your prayer cannot rise above the abundance of oil and incense. It does not reach Heaven and bring down divine grace in return. And woe to the person who enters the Church without the fear of God. For John Chrysostom says, “You entered the temple, and thereby declared yourself worthy.” Have you thought carefully about that? To whom are you going? Who is there, in the place you are entering? And did you truly judge yourself worthy to enter? Time does not permit us, nor can talks of this kind develop such subjects adequately in a single hour. Yet I will repeat: we are so intelligent.

We should need only a few words spoken to us in order to understand much.

Δημιουργεί συγγενείς του Θεού. Εάν ο άνθρωπος ήθελε να εμβαθύνει, επί τη βάσει τόσης μορφώσεως που έχει σήμερα ο άνθρωπος, θα πρέπει όλα αυτά να τα προσέχει. Λέγει επιγραμματικότατα σήμερα ο Παύλος: «Ότε», λέει, «ήλθε το πλήρωμα του χρόνου, εξαπέστειλε ο Θεός τον Υιόν αυτού, γεννόμενον εκ γυναικός, γεννόμενον υπό νόμον, ίνα τους υπό νόμον εξαγοράσει, ίνα την υιοθεσίαν απολάβωμεν». Λέει ψέματα; Δεν λέει ψέματα. Εμείς είμαστε ψεύτες που λέμε ότι είμαστε παιδιά του Θεού και κοιμόμαστε ξένοιαστοι, όταν πάμε στη Βασιλεία του Θεού. Όσα έχει ο πατέρας μας, έχουμε κι εμείς. Σοβαρά; Είμαστε παιδιά του Θεού;

Άνθρωποι που έχουνε τάξει σε ορισμένες ημερομηνίες να κοινωνούν δεν διατηρούν την επικοινωνία αυτή με τον Χριστόν. Κατά συνέπεια, δεν επικοινωνούν με τη ζωή, δεν είναι ζωντανοί. Και σε στιγμή που, αν εκτάκτως αποθάνουν, πού θα πάνε; Τρεις της ημέρας ο άνθρωπος στρέφεται στο σπίτι του για το σώμα του. Πόσες του έτους στρέφεται για την ψυχή του; Καθημερινώς εδώ παρατίθεται τράπεζα. Καθημερινώς θύεται άρτος και προσφέρεται οίνος και, εντούτοις, ο άνθρωπος δεν έρχεται. Πώς είναι δυνατό να έχει ζωή και να διατηρήσει συγγένειαν, εφόσον τον Χριστόν, ο οποίος εδώ μεταβάλλεται και προσφέρεται ως μόσχος ο σιτευτός επί της Αγίας Τραπέζης;

Είναι δυνατόν αυτός να είναι αδελφός του Χριστού; «Ο μη τρώγων τη σάρκα μου και μη πίνων το αίμα μου, ουκ έχει ζωήν εν εαυτώ». Θα διορθώσεις, άνθρωπε, και του Χριστού τα λόγια; Προσέξετέ το. Δεν είναι αρκετό το να ερχόμεθα. Γιατί πολλοί άνθρωποι θα μου πούνε —και δεν έχω κανένα λόγο να μην το δεχτώ— ότι εγώ έρχομαι στην Εκκλησία, δεν λείπω από την Εκκλησία, φοιτώ εις την Εκκλησία. Τι κάνεις όμως εις την Εκκλησία που έρχεσαι; Τρέφεσαι από αυτά που σου δίδει η Εκκλησία, από αυτά που προσφέρει η Εκκλησία; Είσαι μεταξύ των κληρονόμων; Λοιπόν, για πρόσεξε: όταν ο ιερεύς κοινωνήσει τους πιστούς, τι θα βγει και θα πει με το Άγιο Ποτήριο στο χέρι, με τον Χριστό; Θα προβάλλει τον Χριστό και θα πει: «Σώσον, ο Θεός, τον λαόν σου και ευλόγησον την κληρονομίαν σου». Ποια είναι η κληρονομία του;
