Summary
The lecture presents the saints, their relics, miracles, and intercessions as living testimony to the truth of Orthodox Christianity. Saint John of Damascus teaches the danger of accepting accusations without investigation, while the miraculous restoration of his severed hand reveals the intercession of the Theotokos. The monasteries, holy springs, relics, and traditions connected with Saints Sabbas and John are presented as continuing witnesses to divine grace and invitations to deeper faith.

We have celebrated a feast for so many years; we ought to receive some spiritual benefit from the saint whom we honor. And in the lives of certain saints there is much teaching—indeed, I would venture to call some of it doctrinal—if we pay attention to their lives and conduct. The saints are the ones who demonstrate the authenticity of our faith. Their holy relics, their miracles, and their intercessions all bear witness to the truth of our faith. Ours is the only religion that has saints. No other religion has saints. Even if the Papists have certain saints, they are saints from before the Schism. After the Schism, they have no saints. And as for Saint Nicholas, who...
was grieved by the Schism and ceased to stream myrrh, they sold him to the Russians. They claim to possess him, but theirs is a cenotaph—an empty tomb. They do not have him. For Saint Nicholas streamed myrrh whenever the Liturgy was celebrated in his church by Orthodox clergy. But after the Schism, when Papist clergy served there, he ceased to stream myrrh for them and did so only when the Orthodox celebrated the Liturgy. Later they sold even this very thing to the Russians. So this evening I wanted to say a few words—to glean, as it were, a small selection from the lives and teachings of these few saints: Saint Barbara,
Saint John of Damascus, whose feast is today; Saint Sabbas the Sanctified, whose feast is tomorrow; and Saint Nicholas, whose feast is on Saturday. By their grace, then, let us glean a few moral lessons. What do we learn from Saint Barbara? If you read her life in full, you will discover that she was a young woman kept under especially strict confinement by her father. His reason was not simply to preserve her moral purity; his purpose was to prevent her from being defiled by Christianity, as he regarded it. Yet her father did not succeed in protecting her from it. Although he had shut her away and confined her inside a glass tower,
the grace of God nevertheless reached even there. It reached even there. The young woman later proved this, not only through the teaching she gave her father concerning the Divinity as threefold Light—for he was in darkness—but also by holding so firmly to this faith that she endured martyrdom for it.
You have read, and so you will understand what I mean, that once, when her father was away on a journey, he had instructed a certain man—what we would call an engineer—to build him a tower with a specified number of windows and doors. The young woman later managed to have the plan changed, so that the tower was built with three windows, though her father had given no such instruction.
When he returned and demanded an explanation from the craftsmen, they told him, “This was your daughter’s wish, and we did not want to disappoint her, so we followed this plan.” Then he demanded an explanation from her: “What prompted you to do this?” She replied, “You seek light? The one true light comes through three windows—from the Holy Trinity—and there are three suns, three suns.” That is how she presented it to him. Of course, this was a teaching connected with Christianity. It caused her father to fly into a rage and to search for those who had penetrated even into that innermost sanctuary and instructed her in the Christian faith. But no one had reached her there.
Someone may ask, “Where did she learn these things about Christ?” Well, that is the mystery, and this is where I would like to pause for a moment. When a person has a sincere and willing heart, that person can be taught by God. There are, of course, those who are taught by men, but there are also those who are taught by God. When there is receptiveness within a person, God sees into the human heart and gives accordingly. He grants illumination concerning wondrous things that even the educated do not know. And you may hear such things from someone who is uneducated but full of grace, as we would say. We heard many such things from Saint Anthony the Great, who was not educated but was full of grace. And this gives us an answer: when a person truly desires Christ, no one can stand in the way.
No matter where they hide a person from Christ or what they do to him, Christ will find a way to instruct him in the things that concern salvation. All this enraged her father. He had great reverence for his gods, and together with his superiors he tried to change her mind, sometimes with threats and sometimes with flattering words. Neither approach succeeded. So, lest their idolatry and his gods be blasphemed, the case was brought before the court. Because she refused to deny her faith, the court sentenced her to death. You understand how terrible the situation was. And her father himself asked to execute his daughter. The judge pronounced the sentence, and the father asked...
to carry it out. And indeed, he did carry it out. But there is a brief episode in the story. The young woman, being quick and youthful, escaped from him for a moment and fled toward the wilderness, out into the fields. The elder ran after her, but he could not keep up. In any event, she had gone far ahead and hid from him somewhere. Nearby, her Life tells us, there was a shepherd tending his sheep. The elder reached the place and asked, “Have you seen anyone here?” With his mouth the shepherd said, “No, I have not,” but with his hand he pointed. “I did not see her, I did not see her,” he kept saying, while pointing with his hand to where she was. Her father seized her and, according to the account, cut off her head.
That shepherd was a double-minded man. To say one thing and do another is evil. At once all his sheep were turned into hedgehogs and gathered around the saint. Later, when the Christians buried her, all that man’s sheep again gathered around her tomb, as though joining in the lamentation. From this comes a lesson that should be understood by all women named Barbara, by those who offer them feast-day greetings, and by the rest of us who stand outside that circle and do not share the saint’s name. If we should find ourselves compelled to give our lives for our faith, would we do it? Do we possess that strength? Some people, of course, say, “We will resist to the point of shedding blood.” Such talk is laughable.
They say it jokingly. Things become very difficult when you actually stand face-to-face with martyrdom. For a person to attain martyrdom, he must be a person of great virtue. Martyrdom is a gift. Martyrdom is a gift; martyrdom is a crown. And Christ does not grant martyrdom to everyone. You must be a person of great virtue for Him to give you this gift. To die for Christ is a great thing; it is a gift. That is why not everyone can attain it. Yet this young woman, though she was wealthy and had every reason to live, to enjoy her youth, as people say, and so many other things, cared nothing for all those supposed delights of the world and the flesh. She offered her head; she drank the cup. Have you seen how folk iconographers depict her? She too offered her blood upon the altar. As Christ offered Himself, so did she offer herself.
May we too receive from her strength and right faith. Divine Justice then acted in this present life, while reserving, of course, its full action for the life to come. When this man returned from executing his daughter and reached the outskirts of the city, a thunderbolt struck him and utterly consumed him. It is probably for this reason that the artillery has taken her as its patron saint. Just as the thunderbolt struck the enemy of the faith with good effect and unerring aim, so may every projectile fired by the artillery strike the enemies of the faith and the homeland. I do not know exactly how...
those who went to church today, those celebrating their name day, or those who will offer their good wishes understand this. In any case, the story of this young woman must not pass unnoticed. Let us ask her for grace. We do not possess it, but Scripture says that to the one who knocks it will be opened, and the one who seeks will find. Yet we have not asked. We said nothing to her today. Some mothers were content, out of superstition, to take their little children to receive Holy Communion today “for their good.” The mothers themselves did not receive; they had their children receive “for their good.” Why do we say, “for their good”? What does that have to do with it? Is not the Holy Communion celebrated yesterday, or that which will be celebrated tomorrow, the very same? So I would not want this...
young woman’s life and its lesson to pass unnoticed. The second person on whom we should dwell today is Saint John of Damascus, a great figure. He ought to be known throughout the entire Christian flock, because the hymnography in honor of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) comes preeminently from Saint John—from this very hand of his. He was a man of the seventh century. The name “Damascene” naturally means that he came from Damascus. Yet we do not know very much about him either. He is first presented as the secretary of a prominent and powerful man of his time. On one occasion, he was accused of...
handing secret documents to an enemy of his master, and this cost him his hand. His master cut off his hand and hung it in the public square, both to disgrace him and to teach others that anyone who did the same would suffer the same fate. Yet the accusation was slanderous. This is why a person must be careful. His master repented afterward and kissed his feet. We too sometimes fall into this trap. We are not careful; we lend both ears to an accusation, though we should not. It is told that a certain lady once went to Napoleon and accused her husband.
At that moment Napoleon the Great was seated at a table, resting his head on one hand and covering one ear. At one point she asked him, “Your Majesty, does your ear hurt?” “No,” he replied. “But I see you holding it,” she said. “I am keeping this ear closed,” he answered, “so that I may hear your husband with it. With one ear I am listening to you, but I must also listen to your husband with the other before I reach a judgment and conclusion.” This is something we often fail to do. Carried away by the malice or weakness of other people, we take sides, say things, or act in ways that are not right. And so this ruler went so far as to cut off the man’s hand immediately.
Tradition says that the hand remained hanging in the public square for a day, as a means of humiliation and warning. That evening, Saint John asked some of his friends to go and request it from the ruler. Enough had already been done; he only wished to bury it. Indeed, perhaps God granted the ruler illumination, for he yielded and gave him the hand. When the ruler gave him the hand,
Saint John took it and went to a small church dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy). He went to a small church dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos. There he fell prostrate and began to entreat her, trusting that she could work a miracle for him.
The prayer he offered to the Most Holy Theotokos was this:
“O Lady, All-Pure Mother who gave birth to my God, my right hand was cut off because of the divine icon. You know well the reason for which Leo, my master, raged against me. Come swiftly, therefore, and heal my hand. The right hand of the Most High, which took flesh from you,”
works many miracles through your intercession. May He now heal this right hand of mine, so that I may compose for you, with rhythm and harmony, the hymns given by Him who became incarnate from you, O Theotokos, and so that my hand may serve as a fellow-worker in Orthodox worship. For you can do whatever you will, since you are the Mother of God.” This is what he said to her.
At that moment, amid his pain and tears, he fell asleep. And there he had a brief dream, something like a vision—whether awake or asleep, I do not know how to describe it. He saw the Most Holy Theotokos approaching him and saying, “I have heard your supplication. Your hand has been restored. See that you keep your promise.” Now, you understand, he took this as a dream; after all, what does a hungry man dream of? But shortly afterward he awoke. It all seemed unreal to him. He thought about the dream, but not about his hand; he no longer thought about his pain, only about the dream. Then he tried to feel the pain in his hand, but there was none. And to his amazement, he saw that his hand had been restored to its place. What he had seen was no illusion.
It was not merely a dream or a fantasy. You can imagine the state that man was in. This event then led to something else. Having received this blessing from the Most Holy Theotokos, he made an icon of her, about one meter high—and this icon still exists today—and approximately eighty centimeters wide. He added a third hand to the image of the Most Holy Theotokos, and it became known as the Three-Handed Icon. It was Saint John’s testimony and acknowledgment that he owed his hand to the Most Holy Theotokos and that, consequently, it belonged to her. This, as I have told you, is the icon known today as the Three-Handed Theotokos. He also prophesied that this icon
would be given to a king after many years had passed. And indeed, about three hundred years later, Michael, a ruler of Serbia, came to Damascus and was given this icon as a gift. The Serbs later took the icon with them into battle, carrying it on a mule, just as the Ark accompanied the Israelites in their struggles. But I will tell you the rest shortly. Meanwhile, word spread that John had his hand again. This enraged the ruler even more. He now considered John a common fraud who had somehow arranged for another person’s hand to be given to him instead of his own. The matter went to court, and John was summoned before the presiding judge to answer this charge of fraud, for which he now faced the ultimate penalty.
He said, “I committed no fraud; I did nothing of the kind. My ruler unjustly cut off this hand, but the Most Holy Theotokos, in whom I believe and whom I venerate, gave it back to me. And I have suffered... To prove this to you,” he raised his sleeve and showed them where the hand had been severed. The Most Holy Theotokos had wisely left a deep red ring around his wrist, clearly showing that the hand had been cut off and then restored. At once, everyone raised their hands in amazement. Above all, the ruler fell down before him in reverence. He understood that this was no ordinary man and no ordinary servant standing before him, and that he should not have accepted the accusations so readily. He should first have investigated them. He showered John with gifts and set him free to go and fulfill his vow.
From that point onward, the Saint began a new life and composed the hymns to the Most Holy Theotokos; all these are attributed to Saint John of Damascus. Concerning this icon, I would also like to tell you that it remained in Serbia for many years, and they always took it with them. But once, during a war, both the icon and the mule disappeared. They could not be found anywhere. One night on the Holy Mountain, when the fathers had risen for their customary service—at one o’clock, when everyone on the Holy Mountain rises in the monasteries, the huts, the sketes, and the caves—a monk at the Holy Monastery of Docheiariou—or rather, forgive me, at Hilandar Monastery, the Serbian monastery—
went outside and saw a pillar of light some four or five hundred meters from the monastery. Though the pillar rested upon the earth, it reached up toward heaven. He understood that something supernatural was taking place. A similar thing happened at Iviron Monastery when, in Constantinople, that widow placed the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Portaitissa, into the sea so that it might preserve itself. There too, a pillar joined earth to heaven, and the fathers discovered the icon and brought it ashore. The monk ran back and alerted the fathers. The abbot came out, a group gathered, and in the darkness they went to the place where the pillar stood. There they saw an exhausted mule lying on the ground, carrying an icon. Those of you gentlemen who have visited Hilandar Monastery will have seen
—as we ascend from Esphigmenou, coming up from the arsanas, on our left, some four or five hundred meters before reaching the monastery—a small pavilion. Painted on its wall is this scene: the fallen mule, the icon upon its back, and the pillar of fire rising to heaven. But the story of this icon continues, and I would like those who do not know it to hear it. They received the icon as was fitting, with lanterns and candles, processional fans, incense, and psalms, and carried it into the church. They placed it behind the Holy Altar, in what we call the synthronon, just as the Axion Estin icon has been placed in the Protaton. It remained there for many years. But then, one day, the abbot of the monastery reposed, and for six months...
they were unable to agree on a successor—as so often happens in such matters. “No, this man should be chosen.” “No, they should choose the other one,” and so forth. Early one morning, when the sacristan went down during the night to light the church before the fathers gathered for the service, he was astonished to find the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos standing in the abbot’s place. I would also like you to know that this icon is two-sided. On its reverse is a magnificent Byzantine icon of Saint Nicholas. The abbot’s place is always beside the bishop’s throne: immediately to the right of that throne is the abbot’s stall. They assumed that someone had placed the icon there for some unknown reason. With reverence, they took it and returned it to its former place. But, astonishingly, the following night it was found once again in the same place.
They were perplexed and returned it once more, but for a third time the icon appeared in the same place. Then they gave up trying to move it. In the morning, someone knocked at the monastery gate. A monk of recognized holiness and reputation came from the desert and said to them, “I come on behalf of the Most Holy Theotokos. Do not move her or cause her any further trouble. Since you have not chosen an abbot, from now on she herself will be the abbess of the monastery.” And indeed, to this day the icon remains in that place. Before her they make their prostration; from her they receive a blessing before going to bake bread, ring the bell, carry out their obedience, and so forth. To this day there is no abbot at the Holy Monastery, and her holy icon stands there. Another person whose feast we celebrate...
is Saint Sabbas the Sanctified, a great figure in our Orthodox faith. This is not chiefly because he was the abbot of a lavra with many thousands of monks in the desert, but because through his life he was counted worthy to receive the seal of Christ, and his whole body remains incorrupt to this day. He too is among the many wonders found in our Orthodox faith. For many years, because of our own failings, he remained in exile. The Catholics had stolen him and taken him away from us, but more recently he returned home in a forceful way. I say “forcefully” because he appeared to the previous pope, John XXIII, and warned him: “Send me home quickly, or I will bring great harm upon you.” The pope was frightened.
He telephoned Benedict, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, who sent a delegation to receive the Saint. Today he is in the lavra where he lived his ascetic life and poured out his sweat; there he remains to this day. Something beautiful also happened when they went to receive him, and those who witnessed it were filled with awe. They wanted to remove the Catholic vestments and other garments he had worn for so many years and clothe him in Orthodox vestments. He raised his arms by himself and helped them dress him in the new garments so that they could take him home. When he was a small child, his Christian mother set him upon the path of God.
What a remarkable act that was. And what is especially striking is this: events later unfolded so that, after becoming a monk, he tonsured his own mother as a nun and brought her there, though not inside the monastery, but outside it. Those of you who have visited the place will know that, when we go around to the back, where the so-called river of fire flows down from Jerusalem, her cell can be seen on the rock to the left. He kept his mother there, outside the monastery. The cell is still visible. But later he sent her away—even his own mother. He showed no partiality toward her or toward anyone else, because one of the fathers saw her in a dream, radiant in a wondrous state...
and as soon as that father told him, “Geronta, last night I saw your mother in such-and-such a state,” he immediately silenced him and sent her away. In any case, although thousands have been laid to rest there, and those who die there are placed in the crypt without being buried and remain incorrupt, he removed his mother from that place. Because she was a woman, he did not bury her there. Instead, as those of you who have visited will confirm, he buried her in the cave where the Magi spent the first night while fleeing from Herod. The angel had told them to return to their own country, so they avoided Herod and went home without returning to tell him that they had found Christ.
They spent one night—that is, they were given shelter—in an underground cave within the enclosure of the Holy Monastery of Saint Theodosios the Cenobiarch. We pass this monastery on the way to the Great Lavra of Saint Sabbas; the road runs right alongside its outer wall. Once inside the enclosure, below ground, in what we might call the lower depths, there is a cave where the Magi spent that night. There you will also find the mother of Saint Theodosios the Cenobiarch and the mother from farther down, from the Great Lavra of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified. That is where she was buried. There are others as well: the tomb of the Holy Unmercenaries and the tomb of a spiritual writer, John Moschos. I do not remember the other tombs. I have...
all of them on slides, and one Sunday evening, as we show them in sequence, I will present them to you. If you visit the monastery of Saint Sabbas, you feel as though you are entering the Jerusalem above. Everything is arranged so beautifully, and such peace reigns within those walls, that I believe God has something special to accomplish there. The tomb of Saint John of Damascus is also there. He too was a monk of Saint Sabbas; his tomb is there, and there he lived. The skulls preserved there are countless, all bearing the marks of sanctity. There are also thousands who were slaughtered under a certain Khosrow, in the sixth century, I believe, though I do not remember exactly. I have those on slides as well. A person truly shudders...
when he considers what exists there in the desert, all arising from an orphaned little boy whom a good woman had the kindness to fill with Christ. These are not human powers. This is the seal with which a person is sealed in Christ, giving him endurance into eternity—not only for this age, but also for the age to come, because his presence there is a testimony. Above all, there is his relic, which in every respect, I would say, resembles that of Saint Gerasimos. I have seen both, and they are alike in every way. You know, I have told you that another complete and incorrupt holy relic appeared at the Holy Monastery of Hozeva after twenty-six years. It is astonishing. It is as though we were burying the man today. His body is soft to the touch; you can touch his beard and comb it, and so forth, as though we were burying him now.
And yet twenty-six years had passed since his burial. You will have seen him in the many slides I showed you one Sunday evening. So this great treasure remains largely unused and unappreciated from every point of view: in relation to young people, mothers, the faith, and everything else. Saint Sabbas also has a continuing miracle, apart from the miracle of his own body. There is a holy spring, reached by descending about one hundred and fifty steps outside the monastery. If you stand there and examine that holy spring—where the water could possibly come from and how the basin contains it—you will see that no matter how much water is drawn, its level does not fall, and no matter how much flows into it, the level does not rise or overflow anywhere. It is a mystery. If you look at where the water ought to come from, you will see that there is empty space outside; there is no natural explanation, and yet the holy water is there. Women can also reach this place, approaching from outside the wall.
There is a small gate through which they descend, and from there they can go down to see the holy spring, venerate it, and drink. The monastery itself, however, is inaccessible to women; they cannot enter. The fathers come outside and bring holy relics from the monastery for the women to venerate and receive a blessing, together with whatever other sacred objects they have there. Saint Sabbas, whose feast we celebrate, is a great presence in the desert of the Jordan. Yet he passes almost unnoticed, as though nothing extraordinary were there, even though he is a powerful testimony to Orthodox Christianity. For complete, incorrupt relics stand wholly opposed to Satan, and he tries to obscure such things, wanting them to decay and cease to exist. Now, what is brought before us? Another great figure is Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, the Wonderworker. Many bear the name of Saint Nicholas; many will celebrate his feast, and many will offer their good wishes...
to all those named Nicholas, saying, “Many years!” Our Church has much to teach us about this Saint. For the most part, the Church sums up the life and whole manner of living of the saints in the apolytikion and the kontakion. When a priest reads these hymns attentively and looks deeply into them, he can grasp the Saint’s entire life. Saint Nicholas is presented through three qualities. The hymn says, “A Canon of faith, an image of meekness, and a teacher of self-control, you were revealed to your flock,” and so forth. It presents three fundamental virtues: faith, meekness, and self-control. These are essential for every person. This applies to all of us, of course—but what about those who bear his name...
Do those who bear his name have these virtues? Do we who will greet them and offer them good wishes have them? Do we have any of these things? Let us consider each one. The hymn calls him “a rule of faith.” Indeed, he proved in practice that he was, and remains, a rule of faith. Do you know what “rule” means, at least in this context? It means a standard, a measuring tape, a ruler. In other words, a faith that is measured precisely, turning neither to the right nor to the left.
At home. This is the essence of the faith. You must not fashion a faith of your own, nor may I fashion one of my own that excuses everything I do. No—a faith formed according to a definite mold. This should concern us, because many people believe, but each in their own way.
People say they believe in God. Does that save them? It does not. Others believe in some supreme being. Does anything come of that? Nothing. Others believe in a higher power. Are they benefited? Not at all. Others believe in Christ. But in which Christ? In the Christ they imagine for themselves. Many believe in Christ, but they see Him as a great man, a reformer; some call Him a socialist, and others a communist. They bring Christ down to a level that fits their own standards, claiming that this is what Christ was. In which Jesus do we believe? That is the question, because there are many opinions. It is good to believe in Christ, but there are many opinions. Our Christ...
came to earth, and, as we read in Matthew 16:16, He asked His disciples, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am? You who go out among them—who do they take Me to be?” “Some say You are Elijah, others Jeremiah, others one of the prophets, and others Saint John the Forerunner,” and so on. “Various opinions are circulating out there in the marketplace. But you—what do you say?” Then Peter, with his simplicity and childlike heart, answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Not of some god, but of the living God. “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah”—Simon, son of Jonah. “You are blessed.” “Why am I blessed, Lord?”
“Flesh and blood did not reveal to you what you have said; it is not even your own. My Father revealed it to you concerning Jesus.” So faith in God does not mean believing in just any Christ. There were many men named Jesus. If we believe in Christ, we believe in the One proclaimed by the angel to the Myrrh-bearing Women: “Why do you seek Him here? Jesus the Crucified, the Nazarene; He is not here.” And He is the only founder of a religion who is also God and whose tomb is empty. This is the assurance of our true faith. All the so-called founders of religions remain bound in their burial shrouds: Muhammad in Mecca, Confucius, Buddha, and here the Popes...
the Protestants, all of them—Calvin and the rest—and over there the Russians, and so forth. Only Jesus, the Crucified, the Nazarene, and His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, have an empty tomb. This assures us that they rose and that we too shall rise, and that we possess the true faith. Yet regarding this Jesus, the Crucified, the Nazarene, merely believing is not enough. Someone may say, “I believe in this Christ, the Christ of Orthodoxy, the Crucified, the Nazarene.” We agree, but allow me to continue. You believe in Christ and prove it to me: you have an oil lamp at home, an icon at home, incense at home; you go to Church; you bring one child to Holy Communion, while you have killed the others, and so on.
Now, do you believe in this Christ? “I do.” Any better than the devil does? Concerning the devil, James, the Brother of the Lord, says: “The demons believe—and tremble.” I think you have read this; I am not telling you anything new. Is this how we believe? “Yes, I will offer You incense, but You will not come into my bedroom and tell me to have children. I will offer You incense, but You will not tell me what to cook today. I will offer You incense, but You will not tell me how to dress as a man, or prevent me from becoming a woman if I am a man.” These things condemn us. So, do we truly believe? This is not true faith. “He who believes in Me keeps My commandments.” He who believes in Me will obey My law.
We do not do what He says. So when we claim to believe, in what manner do we believe? Our faith, then, has been stretched out of shape; it has not been kept to the rule. Merely believing is not enough, because Satan too has correct belief concerning our Christ and His divinity. He said, “What have You to do with me, Jesus, Son of God, Son of the Most High God? Have You come to torment me before the appointed time?” Satan confesses Him to be the Son of God. Yet Arius tells you that He is not the Son of God—that the devil was mistaken—but that He stands by Himself, apart from God. It was for the true faith that Saint Nicholas raised his hand and struck Arius. He did not care whether his hand would be cut off. He is the one through whom the fourth miracle took place at the First Ecumenical Council.
On the following day at the First Ecumenical Council—although I think you know the circumstances—there came a moment when no one could silence the unbridled mouth of Arius. Saint Nicholas could restrain himself no longer and struck him in the presence of the emperor. According to the law, his hand had to be cut off. But someone proposed another course, and that opinion prevailed: “Let us not interrupt the Council to cut off his hand. We will strip him of his episcopal vestments, depose him, and put him in prison. Once the Council’s work is finished, they can cut off his hand.” And so Saint Nicholas, stripped of his rank and imprisoned, received a visit from our Lord and from the Most Holy Theotokos.
Look!
“Why are you here? Why are you in this place?” the Lord asked him. “For love of You, Lord.” The Lord placed a Gospel book in his hands, and the Most Holy Theotokos gave him an omophorion. The Most Holy Theotokos made three garments: one for our Christ, the Seamless Robe; one for Lazarus in Cyprus, who became Bishop of Kition; and one for Saint Nicholas. This is why you usually see Saint Nicholas depicted in episcopal vestments, holding the Gospel and wearing the omophorion. Above Saint Nicholas, on either side, are the Most Holy Theotokos and our Christ. This depicts his restoration in the prison during the events of the First Ecumenical Council. The next morning, a friend who had heard that he had been stripped of his rank and imprisoned brought him food and found him fully vested, reading the Gospel.
What a man! This is the kind of faith we need. Let us test our faith by our deeds; that is where we will understand. Then I will see that I do not truly believe, that I am fainthearted, that I am not acting rightly. “My Christ, increase my faith, so that the moment may come when I do what is right, even when they are about to cut off my head.” This is what Heaven desires, and this is what Christ taught.
Meekness. What is meekness? People desire it—and who does not? We call the meek blessed. In the Beatitudes there is a blessing especially for them: “Blessed are the meek.” Are we meek? We would certainly like to be. But what are we doing to acquire this meekness?
Does no one ever want to learn where this meekness is sold, and how much it costs? Let me tell you plainly: meekness is neither sold nor bought; it is given as a gift. Open to Galatians 5:22 and find the fruits of the Holy Spirit. There you will find a tree called the Holy Spirit, which bears many virtues: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, goodness, kindness, meekness, self-control.” Meekness is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. But how can you have the Holy Spirit to produce these virtues within you if you do not receive Holy Communion? How is it possible if you do not attend Church and do not go to Holy Confession? Where will you find it? It is a fruit of the Holy Spirit.
A person says, “I am a Christian; I believe in God. Of course I fear God.” But where are the qualities of God in you and in me? Christ said, “Learn from Me, for I am meek and humble in heart.” Learn this and live it: I am meek and humble in heart. But we are not meek, because we do not possess the grace of the Holy Spirit. We are not humble in heart, and so we do not have meekness, which is evidence that we truly believe rightly. This is why we so often hear people go so far as blasphemy, saying, “I was angry; I lost my temper.” Really?
Blasphemies, curses—“Damn the one who made you,” “may the raven take you”—meaning the devil. Then come slamming doors, blaming our luck, pulling one another’s hair, and all the rest. You know that the Holy Spirit does not remain there. He departs. We drive Him away. And afterward we cannot simply go and say to Him, “Come back; quietly now, come back.” As though He were saying, “Am I to leave whenever you wish and return whenever you wish?” If a person could understand this, he would tremble. He should bite his tongue—I do not know what he must do or endure—in order to attain this virtue, which this Saint possessed. Those who bear his name, and the rest of us as well, will go and offer good wishes, saying, “Many years, and may we celebrate again next year.” But we do not say, “May you correct yourselves; may you not be next year exactly as we find you now.” I do not know; I wonder whether I should speak about the Saint...
It belongs to him. It is part of the threefold portrait of his virtues. It is his own. If you think it is necessary, then strive for it—with sacrifice of the ego. It is true, as I have said before, that people often demand satisfaction. “I could not help shouting; I could not help becoming angry. He offended my dignity.” Yes—and now you have secured your dignity and defended it. But you have lost your Christian dignity. What happens now? You put him in his place, but you stepped out of your own place in order to put the other person in his. It would have been better for him to remain out of place while you remained in yours. So much for that. The third part is “a teacher of self-control.” Do you know what this means—something people have not even begun to understand? The Saint...
would not take his mother’s breast for milk on Wednesdays and Fridays. Yet we chase after our pampered children to feed them, even on Great and Holy Friday, because we do not believe. The Saint would wait until the sun had set, so that, in a sense, the day had changed. For the Church prays “evening, morning, and noon,” and the events of the next day begin. Only then would the Saint take milk. What will all the men named Nicholas say the day after tomorrow when they serve lamb? And what will those say who go to offer them good wishes and sit down at a Paschal feast? Woe to them on the Day of Judgment. They blaspheme the Saint. They do not honor the Saint. This year they have some leeway, because his feast falls on a Saturday.
They can put fish on the table. But last year, when it fell on a Friday—tell me, were they truly celebrating? Are you celebrating with this Saint while mocking him? This Saint became holy along this path. But you...
how will he make you holy? And how will you bring him here? Even if he comes, can you command him? He will not come. We have another great Saint here in this region. Athens knew him well in earlier times: Saint Seraphim of Domvois. His feast is on May 6, together with the Much-Suffering Job. A monastery bearing his name stands outside Thebes, a monastery where women are not permitted to enter. He is a great Saint. In every difficult period Athens would bring his holy skull here. All the outlying districts, the orchards, and the surrounding areas invoked him in times of hardship. And he too would not take his mother’s breast for milk on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Well now! I do not know whether these things ought to be brought to light. Some people do not want them known, but how long must they remain hidden? They do not want the Saints. All they want is a dry, lifeless text.

Πραότητα. Πραότης τι είναι; Τη θέλουν οι άνθρωποι και ποιος δεν τη θέλει; Μακαρίζουμε τους πράους. «Μακάριοι οι πραείς», στους Μακαρισμούς, ειδικός μακαρισμός: «Μακάριοι οι πραείς». Εμείς είμαστε πραείς; Θα θέλαμε βέβαια. Και τι κάνουμε για να αποκτήσουμε αυτή την πραότητα;
Λέει: «Χριστιανός, πιστεύω στο Θεό, αλλοίμονο, δεν είμαι θεοφοβούμενος». Πού είναι οι ιδιότητες του Θεού επάνω σου και επάνω μου; Ο Χριστός είπε: «Μάθετε απ’ εμού ότι πράος ειμι και ταπεινός τη καρδία». Μάθετέ το και ζήσετέ το, ότι είμαι πράος και ταπεινός τη καρδία. Αλλά εμείς δεν είμαστε πράοι και δεν είμαστε πράοι διότι δεν έχουμε την χάρη του Πνεύματος του Αγίου. Δεν είμαστε ταπεινοί στην καρδία, για να έχουμε και την πραότητα, που είναι μια απόδειξη ότι πράγματι πιστεύουμε σωστά. Γι’ αυτό πολλές φορές ακούμε και σε βλασφημίες ακόμη να φτάσει ο άνθρωπος, στα νεύρα του, λέει, επάνω. Σοβαρά;
