Summary
Christ’s encounter with the Canaanite woman follows His teaching that evil arising from the heart, rather than food or unwashed hands, defiles a person. God may delay His answer so that believers remain close to Him, examine themselves, accept responsibility, and persevere rather than abandon prayer. The Canaanite woman’s persistence despite Christ’s initial silence and the Apostles’ impatience presents a lasting model of faithful prayer that refuses to lose hope.

Tonight’s subject will be drawn from the Gospel reading of the day. You know, every Sunday our Holy Church brings forward, one after another, certain incidents and events, to remind people of them. People are called to pay attention to them, to live them, and, as we might say, to make them part of their lives. Today the Church presented us with a family tragedy.
It unfolded, in a certain sense, there near the borders of Tyre and Sidon, in a pagan region. It took place between Christ and a grief-stricken mother whose daughter was severely possessed by a demon.
If you read the texts concerning that time, you will find that Christ had entered into a dispute with the Pharisees, specifically about something that even we have not interpreted very well: whether what enters a person causes defilement, or what comes out. We have generally connected this passage with fasting, although it has nothing to do with that. It is not about fasting; it is about evil logismoi—intrusive thoughts—evil deeds, and so forth, and about the disciples eating with unwashed hands, which were considered unclean. It has nothing to do with fasting. So, when Christ silenced them there, He said: “Are you also still without understanding? Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled into the drain? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man.” Those are the things that pollute a person. “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, and blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man.” These things, He says, pollute a person. “But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”
He silenced them. Because of this answer from Christ, they became enraged and began persecuting Him. And Christ took the lesser course, as we were saying: He left that place and went for a short time into the pagan regions of Tyre and Sidon, where He met this pagan woman. Christ thus demonstrates what He had said on another occasion: “Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” Do not expose yourselves needlessly; do not engage in displays of bravado or put your life in danger unless there is a serious reason. And indeed, Christ departed. That is how He came to be there.
Earlier He had told His disciples: “Do not enter a city of the Samaritans or of the Gentiles, but go rather to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.” So how is it that You Yourself now go into these pagan regions? Necessity required it. He was compelled to leave by that route. Besides, He had not told them never to preach there at all. Rather, He told them that, since they had two groups before them—the pagans and the Jews—they should prefer speaking to the Jews rather than to the pagans. Someone may now ask, “Were the Jews better, so that they should be the ones receiving the preaching?” No. The Jews had the sacred books, they had the Law, and they had teaching about the Messiah. The message would therefore find a response among them.
One believer would become two, two would become five, and five would become ten. The pagans had nothing of this kind at that time. That is precisely why He urges them—or rather, tells them—to go to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. In any case, I have said all this to connect the events for you, so that you may understand how He came to be there and exactly what took place. While He was there, as the Evangelist Matthew says in the fifteenth chapter: “Jesus went out from there”—from His encounter with the Pharisees, whom He had silenced—“and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman came out from that region and cried out to Him, saying, ‘Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely possessed by a demon.’” She asks for mercy.
She asks on behalf of her daughter. The girl may be possessed by a demon and unable to ask for herself, because she is under the influence of Satan. Satan does not ask for mercy. One thing Satan cannot do is say, “Have mercy on us.” He cannot say that. He may say, “Holy God”; he may say, “Holy Mighty”; he may say, “Holy Immortal”; but “Have mercy on us”—that he does not say. He has never said it, nor will he ever say it. The same is true of every person who is under the influence of the evil one. Such a person can never ask God for mercy. Someone may therefore ask: what happens in this case? If there are people around him who ask on his behalf,
can they benefit that person? In other words, does one person’s prayer for another have power? Certainly it does. And if it has power for another person, all the more does it have power for one’s own family: for one’s child, husband, wife, brother, or parent. Prayer has power. Yet most of us Orthodox Christians do not know this kind of prayer. Of course, we arrange for prayers to be offered: we give the priest a slip of paper with names so that he may pray for them, or so that they may be commemorated during the Paraklesis, the supplicatory canon. But we ourselves do not pray. We treat the matter as someone else’s individual concern.
When a person regards the matter as his own, it is different. He feels the pain and lives through it; the intensity of his prayer is different, and the results are different. Here a mother is praying, and today she leaves us a classic example that every mother with demonically afflicted children ought to know. They should make use of this weapon called prayer—a prayer which, of course, presupposes humility and faith. I used the phrase “demonically afflicted children,” and perhaps some who heard it, or who will hear it, were shocked. Without paying attention to what they were saying, they might tell me: “What? Glory to God, everyone in our household is
well. No one is possessed by a demon; no one is foaming at the mouth or bound in chains.” Allow me to respond, if such a thought has crossed or should cross anyone’s mind. It is preferable for someone to be bound in chains, falling to the ground and convulsing with foam at the mouth, than to walk about freely in a necktie while being possessed by a demon. Those found in psychiatric institutions and similar places are not necessarily the truly demon-possessed ones. It is said that once a thoughtless man approached the psychiatric hospital on Corfu. I do not know whether you have ever been there or passed outside it, but there is a fence around it.
Those patients who are doing better and are recovering come outside to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. One of our clever fellows approached and naively asked one of the patients, an inmate of the hospital, whether there were many people inside. And do you know what the patient answered? “There are more of you outside,” he said. This is true, because we judge sickness by the illness of the body, not by the illness of the soul, and so we imagine that we are well. It is like the message on a note that was handed out here the other day. We ask, “How are you?” and answer, “Glory to God.” Why are you glorifying God? Are you truly well? Certainly, no one in the household is confined to bed—but neither is anyone in Church on Sunday morning.
No one receives Holy Communion, no one goes to confession, no one fasts, and no one practices self-restraint. With all that absent, what goodness do you possess, and under whose influence are you—an angel’s or the evil one’s? If we measure ourselves by the standard we ought to use, we will find that, more or less, all of us need to follow this woman’s example. We all need it. As you know, psychiatrists have multiplied today, along with everything else concerned with the soul, and yet they heal no one. Healing is found only in God. He alone has the power to command. You can therefore set this process in motion,
so that Christ may intervene and reveal the truth of the matter. For it is true that conditions like the one in that woman’s home exist among us as well. Many of our children do not follow us; many do not listen to us; many act against their own best interests. Indeed, some set themselves up as punishers of society, and so forth. They are under the influence of Satan, not under the influence of Christ. What, then, does the mother do in such a case? She kneels and prays. Woe to the children who have no mothers to pray for them. Woe to those children! Their mothers love them, care about them, tend to them, stay awake over them, sacrifice themselves, and would give their own blood for them,
yet they do not benefit their children’s souls through prayer. A mother can change the course of events. Things can be set right miraculously. I was once told about a mother whose son said to her: “I’m going to tell you something, but you must not pray about it.” “What? Why, my child, do you say that you will tell me something, but I must not pray?” “Just what I said, Mother. I know that your prayers thwart my plans.” And indeed, through her prayer she did thwart her child’s plans and helped him until he passed through those difficult moments and difficult years, came to his senses, and understood what was really happening. This prayer of the mother is missing from the family today. That is why today’s family does not produce human beings;
it produces beasts. They have a human outward appearance, but a beastly mentality. They are supposedly modern and sophisticated; they have learned many foreign terms and replaced our own words with foreign expressions, and so on. And this is considered success, while in reality Christ is absent. And where Christ is absent, there can be no progress at all. Instead, we have someone who is demonically influenced. Many times we hear such things, even openly anti-Christian things, yet they pin us, as the saying goes, against the wall. The door is slammed in our face. I will not even tell you what goes on there. We cannot restrain them, speak to them, or do anything at all. Why? Because this one thing is missing: prayer. Some people will respond to what I am saying: “I pray, but I see no results.”
But are you praying as you should? Have you failed to notice that you ought first to have prayed for yourself? Many people pray; many grieve and show concern for both the physical and the spiritual life of their child. Yet they have not first attended to their own life. They themselves are not spiritual people; they do not have this relationship with God. And when a person has no relationship with God, his prayer is not heard by God. Our Fathers, the Saints of the Orthodox Church, have left us a few words that say this: “Hearing in return for hearing.” Do you want God to hear you? Do you want the Most Holy Theotokos to hear you? Do you want the Saints to hear you, hasten to you, and help you? Then you too must listen to them. Since you do not listen to them, neither will they listen to you. Do not expect otherwise. And if you would like me to mention another saying, which you will also remember,
there are the words of the man who had formerly been blind: “Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshipper of God”—not merely someone who believes—“and does His will, He hears him.” Since we parents are not such people, God deals with our children according to our own state and the disposition of our hearts. A mother comes in anguish over her sick child and cries, “Most Holy Theotokos, hasten to help!” Yet the Theotokos does not hasten. Why? Because she has killed her other children through abortion, or has prevented the others from being born. Very well—but the little faith you do have carries no cost. You do not believe in me; you do not acknowledge that I can preserve your children or guide you concerning them. How, then, can I come and help you in this matter? This is only a simple example I am giving you.
There are many such cases. Because we have not first set ourselves right, we make requests for others. Many, for example, hold memorial services for their loved ones, their parents, and their blood relatives, when they themselves need a memorial service. They are already dead, yet they hold memorials for others. Does God accept this? God says: “Go and set yourself right. Otherwise, hold a memorial service for yourself. You are a living corpse.” And you know that there are many walking cemeteries around us. “You have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.” This is precisely why we receive no answers. Moreover, we begin a work—it is a struggle, a real undertaking—but in the end we abandon it halfway. When someone leaves a work half-finished, naturally it produces no result.
I will give you a very simple example. The doctor says: “You must take these tablets every four hours,” or every six hours, or every eight hours. You will get results if you do what you have been told, because the doctor knows scientifically that when the antibiotic enters your system, it will raise the required concentration in your bloodstream and begin to act. Its effect will last for a certain number of hours. If, after four hours, you do not take the dose he prescribed, the level will fall. Then you take another dose and it rises again, works for a little while, and falls once more. But if you follow his instructions, the level will remain steady, and you will get the positive result you need. The very same thing happens with prayer in our homes. Some of us still do not know how to pray.
We think prayer is a matter of finding clever words, as though we could talk God around. But can God be talked around? God does not look merely at what you say. He looks at why you say it and how you say it. And when a person perseveres, he will prevail with God. Bear in mind that God does not always answer immediately. There are occasions when a mother cries, “Most Holy Theotokos, my child!” and although the child falls into a fire, he is not burned, or although he falls from a window, he is not killed. In such cases the response is immediate. But for the most part, you should know that God’s clock runs slow. It is not simply on the old calendar; it is four times further behind. We want an immediate answer. For what purpose? So that we can simply carry on with our life as before.
Do we want this sickbed removed from the house? Yes. But you might ask, why do you want it removed? Is there a feast coming, a celebration, so that you can open up the house, clear away the bed, and make room for dancing, food, and everything else? Then perhaps the bed will not be removed. Why? Because how will you live after receiving what you asked for? God sees what comes afterward as well. He does not see only up to this moment; He also sees how you will live afterward. Something comes to mind, and I want to tell you, because there are many things we do not understand. Many people say, and often rejoice, that they made an effort. Someone was passing away, and at the last moment they persuaded him to...
go to Confession and receive Holy Communion, and so he departed with everything in order. But what are you saying? Was he saved? What does it mean to say that he departed with everything in order? You cannot be certain. Granted, he departed after confessing. But you are not taking into account what he had done, or what he would have done if he had not died. If he had lived, God knows what would have happened. Would he have remained faithful? Would he have struggled spiritually from then on? He was not yet in Paradise. He confessed out of necessity, faced with the prospect of death, saying, as it were, “Let me hold on to this as well.” God does not count that confession if He sees that, upon returning home, the man would do the same things again. He does not count it. There are strange things, and we shall see strange things; we need to understand this.
God answers according to the disposition of each person. So I would like us to learn how to wrestle with God in prayer, as this woman did today, and to prevail with God. In the Gospel of Luke, chapter 18—perhaps you have read it—there is a parable told by Christ. It concerns a widow who had suffered an injustice. The judge would not grant her justice, seeking to take advantage of her and so forth. But every day she went outside his house and cried, “Grant me justice!” In the end, simply to rid himself...
of the widow’s continual harassment, he granted her justice—the unjust judge. It is a parable; read it plainly for yourselves. I shall repeat it to you as it is written: “Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart.” Always pray, persevere, do not grow weary, and do not abandon prayer. He said: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man”—a hard-hearted man. “Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’” Give me justice; you can see that right is on my side.
“And he would not for a while.” He tormented the woman and refused to grant her justice. “But afterward he said within himself”—he thought—“Though I do not fear God,” though I do not care what God says, “nor regard man, yet because this widow troubles me, I will grant her justice.” I will do it simply to be rid of her voice, to be rid of her coming every day and complaining to me. And so he granted her justice. Now, the Lord...
She did not give up and say, “I am dealing with a hard man; there is nothing I can do; the case is lost.” She did not sink into despair, lose her composure, take her own life, as we sometimes hear, or commit some crime. No. She kept going back to him. And if even the unjust judge yielded, what will God do? So it depends on us: how we pray and what we ask for. As we said, many people ask God to have mercy on their children. That is not the right way. Many ask Him to have mercy on the husband, the wife, the brother, and so forth. No. We must include ourselves. We must make the matter personal and take it upon ourselves as our own. When the woman says, “Have mercy on me,” she implies that she herself bears responsibility for the condition of her household.
This is happening because of my sins. But we do not approach things this way. We do not search for the cause, for the root. Most of the time we talk only about the branches. I shall give you a current example. It is not exactly our subject, but it is related. How many people today oppose the government because it seeks to make civil marriage compulsory, as the matter is being presented? We accuse those who intervene forcefully to impose something that is not right. But ask yourselves: are they the ones responsible? I take the matter further: we are responsible. Because of our sins, they have become instruments carrying out...
God’s justice, and we are being chastened. When I accuse that man, I let myself off the hook. I must first accuse myself, because otherwise he would not have been able to do such things. God has the power to change his mind and prevent him. But for what reason should He do so? Let me take this further. We say we want a religious wedding—but why? So that afterward you can kill your children or refuse to have children? If that is what you intend, then do not have such a wedding; do not marry at all. Think about it and take this into account as well. Do we truly honor the Mystery? Do we want a partnership with God? Holy Matrimony means a partnership with God. What a great honor—to become God’s fellow worker and bring forth human persons who will live eternally. You are not constructing aircraft, bridges, or sewers; you are bringing forth human beings. Why does man disdain this? If he does not want it, then he will not have it at all. He will be reduced by force to the level of an animal. Now try to answer that.
We have learned to shift responsibility onto others, even though we ourselves are to blame. So the woman says, “My daughter is severely demon-possessed; have mercy on me.” For if I had been a better person, I would not have had this tyrant in my home; I would not have had Satan in my home, and my heart would not have been torn apart. But I did not live as I should. In any case, let us continue. I repeat, this is something we must grasp. When God sees our repentance, when He sees that we truly admit that we too did not act rightly, that we should have lived differently, and that now we are striving to put things right—because there is metanoia, repentance—then nothing is impossible; everything can be set right. As long as a person is breathing, that is God’s assurance that He is waiting to set our affairs...
in order. Always. There is no matter that God cannot set right. Let others arrange everything for evil. Let them seal it and double-lock it. Christ will open it. It is enough for sins to be removed from the way through our repentance, so that we may free His hands, as it were. For His hands are open. What happens to individuals, families, society, our country, and the world happens because of our sins. For there is One who is not working today, One who has no work to do, and that is Christ. We could even say the devil is out of work. Today we ourselves have replaced the devil. He does not need to intervene. We have become so wicked, so ruthless, and so hard-hearted that he no longer needs to work. Do you remember what the devil said to Saint Anthony the Great? Have you read it?
Saint Anthony the Great went down to Alexandria to help in the struggle against the Arians. He succeeded, and the Church vindicated the truth. He then withdrew to return to his own place. One day Satan appeared to him and said, “Why are you praying, Anthony? What have I done to you?” After Saint Anthony the Great had left Alexandria, the Arian heresy flared up again. When he heard about it, he began praying from his cell, and his prayer burned Satan. So Satan confronted him face to face and said, “Why are you praying?” Anthony replied, “Because of the harm you are doing in Alexandria.” Satan said, “Anthony, I am not doing it. Ever since you came down and prayed, I have withdrawn.” “Then how is it happening?” “They are doing it themselves,” he said. “They are responsible.” And so it was.
Let us continue. Before leaving this point, I want to remind you that all of us have problems of this kind, whether we wish to admit it or not. And if we repent through our deeds by changing our way of life—not repentance in words, but in action—things can change. Many people say they repent, but they do nothing; they do not change their lives. Repentance means a change of direction. If I was traveling toward Patras, I turn around and head toward Thessaloniki. I do not continue along the same road, claiming that I repent while doing the same things. No, that counts for nothing. Otherwise you make a mockery of God. Some repent only seasonally and do the same thing the next day. They go to Confession for Pascha, and on Bright Monday they return to the same sins. Such repentance and confession count for nothing. Repentance means a change: I take another road. Then Christ takes upon Himself...
our difficulties, all our filth and weaknesses, and from that point onward He helps us live a new life. We shall fall again as we travel along that road, but we shall be struggling. We shall always remain under God, and we shall continually see miraculous results like those we saw today. In any case, as the Gospel tells us, Christ’s attitude toward this woman did not seem very encouraging. She kept crying out to God, to Christ; she was not merely pleading, but shouting, “Have mercy on me.” “But He answered her not a word.” It was as though nothing were happening, as though He heard nothing and felt nothing, as though He did not share in or even acknowledge the pain and cries of this woman. But there were others there as well...
the Apostles, who were walking with Him. Christ had the patient endurance to hear her voice and her pleading without answering. But the Apostles could not endure it, so they intervened with Christ. “And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, ‘Send her away, for she cries out after us.’” They pleaded with Him: “Please, send her away.” But had He detained her? Of course He had. How? She believed that He had the power to help her, yet she had not heard that He was unwilling. He was drawing her close. Tell her plainly. This refusal compels a person to draw nearer, to cry out and weep. Christ wants the human person close to Him. But man does not want to remain close to Christ. He wants to go elsewhere—to satisfy the flesh, follow fashion and the world, and serve his own ego. He wants to receive what he needs from Christ and then go off and do Satan’s work. This is why Christ often does not answer. Let him remain there, struggling and crying out. It benefits him to stay close to Me. And indeed we are often benefited because we do not receive an immediate answer. We are compelled to pray more, attend to our faults, and examine ourselves, so that we may appease God’s justice and receive what we ask for. That is why the Apostles said, “Send her away.” In other words, tell her yes or no, so that she knows where she stands, because we cannot bear to hear her pleading any longer.
The Apostles intervened. Christ stopped and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” In other words, “I have not come for her; she has no connection with the Israelites.” She heard this. Yet not only did she refuse to turn back, but “she came and worshiped Him, saying, ‘Lord, help me.’” This was the second obstacle. “But He answered and said, ‘It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.’” Not only did He refuse her request and offer her no consolation; He even called her a dog.
Endure it!
You can endure it—if you are not ruled by pride, you can endure it. But if you are ruled by pride, you cannot.
He knows what lies within this woman, and He wants to draw it all out of her so that nothing harmful remains and she may be benefited. But I would like to dwell on one point that often passes unnoticed, though it is necessary. When did Christ begin the dialogue which, as we know, afterward benefited the one making the request? When the Apostles intervened. Protestants say, “You go directly to Christ.” This woman went directly to Christ, but received no answer. They exclude everyone else. Certainly, Christ says, “Come to Me.” Yes—but Christ did not answer her. Do you not see that? Is that not in your Bible? Do you not see that Christ stopped when...
the Apostles spoke to Him? The Apostles stopped Christ, and then He halted. Therefore Christ accepts intercessions; Christ accepts mediation. As I said earlier: woe to children who have no mothers to pray for them, and woe to people who do not have the Most Holy Theotokos as their mother to pray for them. For the Theotokos is the one who can change the course of events. Yet Protestants, and much of the non-Orthodox world, do not want her. We, of course, ask for her help as though she were providing a service: “Most Holy Theotokos, help me,” and “Most Holy Theotokos, come quickly.” We want her as a servant, as a nurse, but allow her no place beyond that.
We do not allow her to have anything more than that. We do not need her presence in our home—not in our bedroom, to see what we are doing and whether or not we are having children; not by our cooking pot, to see whether or not we are fasting; not in our sitting room; not when we sew; not when we receive guests. We want her only when we call out to her. Of course, her icon is found in every home. The icon of Christ may be absent, but the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos is there, whether large or small—yet merely as a decoration, not as someone who has a say or plays a role in our lives. Here, I repeat, Christ stopped. Christ opened a dialogue—a beneficial dialogue—which brought results for the person making the request, when the Apostles intervened. Therefore, I repeat, Christ accepts people speaking to Him on behalf of others.
Indeed, our Church says, “The supplication of a mother has great power to win the Master’s favor.” These careless people have a verse from the First Epistle to Timothy—I do not know whether you have ever considered it. It is in 1 Timothy, chapter 2, verse 5. They constantly invoke this verse and put it before us in order to exclude the Most Holy Theotokos, to exclude our Saints—the friends of Christ—and, in general, every other person. Yet they often say to us, “Brother, pray for me; I have a request.” So I am able to pray, but Saint Nicholas cannot pray—is that it?
Saint Spyridon cannot pray, the Most Holy Theotokos cannot pray, the Apostle Paul cannot pray—but I can pray! And where do they take their stand? I repeat, they rely on this verse, 1 Timothy 2:5, which says that God “desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” We agree. “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.” This is where they take their stand. “It says ‘one.’ So how can you put the Theotokos in the middle? How can you put the Saints in the middle? How can you put the Apostles in the middle?” Very well. There is one God. But where is the Mediator? Here is God, and here is the believer. Between the believer and God—
—the Mediator is Christ. Christ, then, is the Mediator who presents us to the Father, for He says plainly in John, “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” No believer can come to God otherwise, no matter how much the Jehovah’s Witnesses protest and claim that they will go to God. They will not, because they have cut themselves off from the bridge called Christ. Christ is the One who brings man to the Father. “As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God.” You reject Christ and say that He is not God. How, then, will He present you to the Father if He is merely a man, an angel, or a servant, as you claim, and not God? How will He present you, when He says plainly here, “No one comes to the Father except through Me”? Everyone must pass through Me.
So this verse says that between man and God there is one Mediator: Christ. Indeed, that is what we also say. They then ask, “In that case, where does the Most Holy Theotokos fit?” She fits where your own head and mind should tell you. The intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos is not between the believer and God. Do you think we place Christ here and then put the Most Holy Theotokos in His place? No! She stands between the believer and Christ. Christ remains in His proper place. The Most Holy Theotokos stands between the believer and Christ. What does the Orthodox Christian say? “Intercede with Him who was born of you, O Lady, Mother of the world.” That is where we place the Most Holy Theotokos: between the believer and Christ.
Do we remove Christ and place the Most Holy Theotokos between the believer and God? No. The Most Holy Theotokos stands between man and Christ, and Christ intercedes with the Father. Christ prepares man to be brought to the Father. For Christ is the One in whose name and blood we are baptized; He is the One whom we receive in Holy Communion; He is the One who will raise us from the dead; and He is the One who will bring us to God the Father. Yet they seize upon this verse and struggle desperately to shut everyone else out, insisting that we must have no other intercessor. My beloved, I urge you always to follow our Church. Do nothing that the Church does not affirm. In this matter, the Church gives the Most Holy Theotokos a place everywhere.
Does the Church say nothing about her? Does it not continually say, “Commemorating our Most Holy, immaculate, most blessed Lady,” and so forth? Every petition remembers the immaculate and Most Holy Theotokos. Woe, I repeat, to the Orthodox Christian who does not have the Most Holy Theotokos as a mother praying for him. Woe to him! And, as I said on the human level, woe to children who have no mothers praying for them. John also writes in his epistle. I want to encourage you not to rely presumptuously on approaching Christ by yourselves. Pride can enter into this. Do not say, “I am worthy, Lord.” Instead say, “For the sake of Your Mother, for the sake of the blood of the Saints.” Put this forward in your prayer, and you will receive a great response. You have many who will help you with your request. Suppose, for example, that you have a serious court case.
The more supporters you have, the better. Here in the Makrygianni district there was a young woman who lived alone and had a small atelier. She was a believer, and because she had so much work, on many evenings she could not return to her home, which was some distance away, so she stayed there. She had a small icon corner with a few icons of Saints, and she would pray late at night—at eleven, midnight, or one in the morning. One evening, as she was praying, she said, “My Lord, through the intercessions of Your Saint Anthony, Your holy Prophet Elijah the Tishbite, Your Saint James,” and she continued naming those whose icons she had in her little icon corner. Then, terrified, she saw one elder coming down from one side—
—another elder coming down from the other side, and yet another appearing from elsewhere. She was frightened, made the sign of the Cross, and cried out, “My Christ, what is this? What are you? Are you evil spirits, or are you good?” One elder replied, “Are we not a group? Did you not call us to come and help you? Did you not say, ‘Through the intercessions of Saint Anthony the Great’? I am he. Did you not say, ‘Through the intercessions of Saint James’? This is he. Did you not say, ‘Through the intercessions of the Prophet Elijah’? This is he.” What does this teach us? Is this reality or not? “We have come to help you.” But we do not understand this; we do not know it. We have our Angel, but we treat him as though he were there only for feast days while we commit sins. Yet he is beside us in our needs and difficulties, especially our spiritual difficulties. We have our Angel, given to us at Baptism by the Church and by Christ—unless we shut him outside and say, “Go out, because of what we are about to do in here.”
What happens there is not fit for any person to hear or see. No one else is to blame. So there is always someone who can intercede, and you should always make use of that intercession. It is not that you cannot say, “My Christ, help me.” But you may also add, “Through the love of the Most Holy Theotokos, who held You in her arms for so long, I beg You, act.” For when she kneels and prays to Christ for the needs of a person and of the whole world, she presents such pleas as these: “I carried You for nine months, I gave You my milk, I did this for You,” and so forth. “Now You also show mercy.” Do you understand? She makes use of this bond. God desires this because humility is present in it. We see it plainly here. Christ continues along the road while the woman cries out behind Him, and nothing happens. But when the Apostles stepped in, Christ stopped and everything changed.
Thank you very much. Here is another passage that may be useful to you someday, written by John in his catholic epistle. You know that John wrote five books: the Gospel according to John, three catholic epistles, and the Apocalypse. In his First Catholic Epistle, chapter 2, verse 1, he gives a general exhortation and says, “My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin.” In other words: I am writing these things to help you take care not to sin. “And if anyone sins”—if, being human, he slips, as we say; if he is careless, gets carried away, or falls for whatever reason—do not be afraid. “And if anyone sins”—
—“we have an Advocate with the Father.” Here we are, human beings; there is the Father; and between us, he says, we have an Advocate. Do you know what “Advocate” means? A comforter, one who undertakes to pay what is owed. And who is He? “Jesus Christ the righteous.” As long as Christ stands between us and the Father, we will cling to Christ, and He will set our affairs in order. We cannot present ourselves before the Kingdom; we cannot stand before His justice on our own. Do not listen to certain people who pray, saying, “Present yourself before the justice of God,” and so forth. We would be lost. We are presented through Christ. Unless Christ, the Mediator between man and God, speaks for us, it cannot be done. And Paul, when exhorting people to pray—
—says something beautiful, which you yourselves can find. It is in the fourth chapter of Hebrews, where he comforts man by pointing to the Person he has beside him in the difficult moments of sin, when his sins oppose and collide with the justice of God. For the justice of God demands satisfaction. Who will pay? Who among men can do so? Christ will step in. Christ mediates; Christ intercedes; Christ is the Mediator in this case. And Paul says, “Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.” I have this great advantage: even if I fall, I will run to Christ. I will run to metanoia, to repentance; I will run to His Mystery, to His Church, and I will set things right. Then I will not fear the Father or His justice.
“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses.” It is not as though He were someone who does not know that we are dust and that we fall into sin. He “was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.” He became man. He experienced hunger, poverty, persecution, pain, tribulation, and fear—everything that we experience—yet without sin. As it says, He was “tempted in all points as we are.”
“Let us therefore come boldly!”
“To the throne of grace”—not the throne of glory, but of grace, which is Christ—“that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” So there is always someone who stands between, and in this instance, as I have just shown you, those intermediaries were the Apostles. Unfortunately, the Protestant world—
—the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and others like them, exclude all these intercessors. They do not accept them; they do not even want to hear of them. We Orthodox Christians, however, call upon them and ask them to intervene. Of course, they present us with arguments that seem logical. They ask: “How can the Most Holy Theotokos be here every moment when I call upon her, while someone elsewhere is calling upon her, and someone else elsewhere is doing the same? Since she is not omnipresent, but is a created being subject to place and time, how can she be present in all these places? Therefore, these things cannot be true.” One person calls upon Saint Nicholas, another calls upon Saint Nicholas, another does the same—one hundred or five hundred people all calling upon Saint Nicholas. How can Saint Nicholas be present in all these situations? This question troubled many people long ago, and they put it to Saint Athanasius the Great—
—the pillar of Orthodoxy. Saint Athanasius the Great explained it and gave this answer: Saint Nicholas may be occupied with one person, while an angel of God goes to another in Saint Nicholas’s place. Read the Life of Saint Nicholas. You will see that two men were imprisoned and were to be unjustly executed in the morning, and they prayed to Saint Nicholas. Saint Nicholas knew nothing of it, even though they were praying to him. He was occupied elsewhere, helping someone else. Then Christ said to him, “Hurry! Leave that place, because people in the prison are calling for you, before they are killed.” Christ notified him. The Saints are not omnipresent, nor is the Most Holy Theotokos. Only the Holy Trinity is omnipresent, and from the Holy Trinity everyone receives word.
Think of a telephone exchange. I want to call from here to somewhere else, dialing a number from this telephone, even if the other telephone is only a few feet away. The call will first go to the exchange, and the exchange will notify the other telephone. I call the exchange, and the exchange connects the call, even though the telephones are side by side. It still goes through the exchange. And if my account with the exchange is not in order, the call will not go through; the line will have been disconnected. That is exactly how it is. So take courage and ask. Read the Life of Saint Nicholas and you will see precisely how it happens. The result was that this woman humbled herself. Christ called her a little dog, and the blessed woman found the courage to give that wise answer, that truly wise answer: “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat from the crumbs which fall—”
—“from their masters’ table.” She disarmed Him; she overcame Christ. Therefore Christ answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” It was as though He said, “Bring Me a sheet of paper to sign, and then write above My signature whatever you wish.” You know that we never sign blank sheets of paper, because someone could write something above our signature that would send us to prison. Yet Christ signed such a paper and gave it to her, saying, in effect, “Go.” When He says, “Let it be to you as you desire,” this includes the child being healed, marrying, and doing whatever else the child might desire. And indeed, the child was healed, as it says here: “Her daughter was healed from that very hour.” The mother was struggling in prayer outside, in the field where she met Christ, while the demon departed from her home. She returned home and found her child safe and in her right mind. Such miracles still happen today.
There are no people willing to struggle in prayer and prevail over Christ—not over His omnipotence, but over His love and mercy. And, as I told you, this requires humility, especially when we ask the Most Holy Theotokos, our Mother, to intercede. We must understand that the more we humble ourselves and acknowledge that we are nothing—that we possess neither righteousness nor boldness before God or before men—the more God responds. If Abraham himself, when he spoke to God, said, “Now I have begun to speak to my Lord, though I am but earth and ashes,” then if Abraham was but earth and ashes, what are we?

τις ρυθμίσει. Πάντα. Δεν υπάρχει θέμα που δεν μπορεί να το ρυθμίσει ο Θεός. Ας λύσουν τα πάντα επί κακώ. Ας τα σφραγίσουν και ας τα διπλοκλειδώσουν. Ο Χριστός θα τα ανοίξει. Αρκεί να φύγουν οι αμαρτίες από τη μέση με τη μετάνοιά μας, να του λύσουμε τα χέρια. Γιατί έχει ανοιγμένα τα χέρια. Στα άτομα, στις οικογένειες, στην κοινωνία, το κράτος μας, στον κόσμο, είναι λόγω των αμαρτιών μας. Γιατί ένας που δεν δουλεύει σήμερα, ένας που δεν έχει δουλειά σήμερα, είναι ο Χριστός. Θα σας λέγαμε ακόμη και ο Διάβολος. Σήμερα αντικαταστήσαμε εμείς τον Διάβολο. Δεν χρειάζεται να μπει αυτός στη μέση. Έχουμε γίνει τόσο πονηροί και τόσο αδίστακτοι και τόσο σκληροί, που δεν χρειάζεται να εργάζεται. Θυμόσαστε τι είπε ο διάβολος στον Μέγα Αντώνιο; Έχετε διαβάσει;
Η Εκκλησία μας μάλιστα λέγει ότι «δέησις μητρός πολύ ισχύει προς ευμένειαν Δεσπότου». Έχουν οι άνθρωποι αυτοί, οι απρόσεκτοι άνθρωποι αυτοί, ένα εδάφιο το οποίο υπάρχει στον Τιμόθεο, δεν ξέρω αν σας έχει απασχολήσει ποτέ. Είναι ένα εδάφιο που υπάρχει στην Α΄ Τιμοθέου, στην πρώτη επιστολή, στο β΄ κεφάλαιο, στίχος 5. Αυτό το επικαλούνται, αυτό το παρουσιάζουν πάντοτε μπροστά, να μας αποκλείσουν την Παναγία μας, να μας αποκλείσουν τους Αγίους μας, τους φίλους του Χριστού και γενικά κάθε άνθρωπο. Παρότι πολλές φορές μας λένε: «Αδελφέ, προσευχήσου, έχω ένα αίτημα». Ώστε εγώ μπορώ να προσευχηθώ. Ο Άγιος Νικόλαος δεν μπορεί να προσευχηθεί, ε;
Δεν υπάρχουν άνθρωποι να παλέψουν, να νικήσουν τον Χριστό, όχι την παντοδυναμία του, την αγάπη του, το έλεός του να νικήσουνε. Και μάλιστα βάζοντας, όπως σας είπα, την Παναγία Μητέρα στη μέση, χρειάζεται ταπείνωση. Να γνωρίσουμε ότι όσο εμείς ταπεινώνουμε τον εαυτό μας, ότι δεν είμαστε τίποτα, ούτε δικαιοσύνη έχουμε ούτε παρρησία έχουμε, ούτε σε Θεό ούτε στους ανθρώπους, τόσο ο Θεός... Αν ένας Αβραάμ, όταν μίλησε στον Θεό, είπε: «Νῦν ἠρξάμην λαλῆσαι πρὸς τὸν Κύριόν μου, ἐγὼ δέ εἰμι γῆ καὶ σποδός». Ένας Αβραάμ, μια στάχτη και χώμα, τι είμαστε εμείς;
