Summary
The lecture argues that Saint Paul’s repeated requests for others’ prayers establish intercessory prayer as fully compatible with Christ’s unique mediation. Prayers asking the Theotokos for help are explained as appeals for her maternal intercession before Christ, not as worship or replacement of the one Mediator. Accounts of incorrupt and wonderworking relics throughout the Orthodox world are offered as continuing testimony to the communion of the Church in heaven and on earth.

My listeners in Christ, rejoice in the Lord. The good God has granted us once again to come together, so that we may say a few words about our Saints, and specifically about the intercessions of the Saints. For, as you know, there are many people who reject the Saints and, in general, the prayers of the Saints. In a previous talk, we also spoke about the Saints and their intercessions, and we reached the point where Paul asked everyone to pray for him, while Paul himself, as he says, remembered others in his prayers. But what more need be asked when the great Paul himself begs everyone to pray for him? As he says: “Now I beseech you, brethren, through our Lord Jesus Christ and through the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf”; and, “You also helping together by prayer for us”; and, “Brethren, pray for us”; and elsewhere, “Finally, brethren, pray for us,”
“that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified.” And again: “Praying also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word.” We read these passages in Romans 15:30, 2 Corinthians 1:11, 1 Thessalonians 5:25, 2 Thessalonians 3:1, and Colossians 4:3.
What, then, are we to say? Should we not be ashamed of the claim that God neither permits nor desires us to call upon the prayers of others, and that doing so is contrary to the mediation of the Savior and His intercession on our behalf? Certainly not.
Paul, that most discerning interpreter of the Christian faith, does precisely this. And when the whole Church prays for Peter while he is in prison, what are we to do? Does that mean nothing to us? Furthermore, if the Lord, struggling in anguish before His Passion in the Garden of Gethsemane and calling upon the Father, received strength and encouragement through an angel, as we know from Luke 22:43, how much more do we need the strengthening intercessions of the Saints—especially when this practice is shown to us by God Himself? “And there appeared to Him,” it says, “an angel from heaven, strengthening Him.” Yet I am compelled to say something harsh: a stone may split under pressure, but the minds of those who oppose us cannot be persuaded. Even after everything we cited in our previous talk and in this one, they answer without the slightest concern: “Indeed, gentlemen, everything you have said is true and comes from the Gospel, and we
pray for one another. But we do not call upon the Saints, because they have already died and no longer exist; being dead, they cannot be invoked in our prayers.” I tell you from the outset that this answer is blasphemous. You should know what God has said, as we read in Matthew 22:32, Mark 12:26–27, and Luke 20:37–39. What does He say there? “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
And yet they tell us that the Saints are dead and that we cannot call upon them. Can we believe that these people do not know what is written in John 5:24? Namely: “Amen, amen, I say to you: he who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and does not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” Can we believe that they do not know John 11:25–26, which says: “He who believes in Me, though he may die, shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die”? How, then, have the Saints died? Do the Saints have no awareness? Are the Saints merely figures of history?
Equal efficacy
My beloved, even if the Saints die, they shall live. But before we proceed to the scriptural testimonies concerning this view, we say to them in a friendly manner: Gentlemen, even while still in the body, the Saints of God were able—through divine illumination, of course, and through the Holy Spirit—to penetrate the hearts of men. Did not the Apostle Peter, for example, see into the heart of Ananias and reveal that he was lying, as we read in Acts of the Apostles 5:3?
Thus, even while they were alive, they had the power to know of events taking place far away from them. Did not the Prophet Elisha know from afar that his servant Gehazi had received gifts from Naaman the Syrian, whom Elisha had healed of leprosy? Do we not read this in 4 Kingdoms—or 2 Kings, as it appears in their Bible—chapter 5, verses 26–27? Does not Holy Scripture also testify that, while still on earth, the Saints entered the heavenly realm? Some, like Jacob, saw angels; others, like the Apostle Paul, were caught up to the third heaven and heard inexpressible words.
We read this in 2 Corinthians 12:2–4. But, my beloved, if the Saints, while they were still on earth, were able by divine grace to accomplish such things—difficult as they are in themselves—is it difficult to believe that now, when they are in heaven and freed, as we have said, from the hindrances of the flesh, they possess knowledge of what is happening on earth? I do not think it is difficult. Holy Scripture contains the clearest testimony, in which God Himself gives direct proof not only that those who departed from this world—even long ago—can intercede for the living, but also that He desires such intercession.
Turn, if you wish, to Jeremiah 15:1. Do you know what you will find there? You will find God saying: “Even if Moses and Samuel stood before Me, My soul would not be inclined toward this people.” That is, even if Moses and Samuel came to intercede and stand before Me, I would not heed them. Our Lord spoke these words to the Prophet Jeremiah. Through them, He showed the Prophet Jeremiah that Moses and Samuel, though they had died long before,
could intercede and plead on behalf of the Jews. Moreover, in the Gospels the Lord reveals that there is unceasing communication between the invisible and visible worlds, between heaven and earth. Does He not do this? Does the Gospel not say so? Does He not say in Matthew 18:10: “Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I say to you that their angels in heaven always behold the face of My Father who is in heaven”? If the angels watch over even the least brother and observe what happens to him, making these things known in heaven, how much more will they report what is happening throughout the whole inhabited world, among entire peoples who call upon these angels and the worthy Saints of God?
And behold, in this way they pray for them. What is written in the Evangelist Luke? “There is joy,” it says, “in heaven, in the presence of the angels of God, over one sinner who repents”—Luke 15:10. Certainly, the ranks of God’s angels who watch over the sinner announce his metanoia, his repentance, in heaven. But if they announce this deed, how much more will they make known the invocations of Christians? Or, finally, consider the example of the Apostle Paul, which we read in Romans 15:30, where he pleads: “That you, angels and Saints, may strive together with me in prayers to God.” But!
My beloved, through the parable of the Rich Man and poor Lazarus, which we read in Luke 16:19–31, our Savior revealed that the Saints are aware of what takes place in the world. In this parable, we see the Patriarch Abraham respond to the Rich Man’s request that he send Lazarus into the world to his brothers: “They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.” Just as Abraham came to know of Moses and the prophets, who lived in the world after his own time, so too the Saints learn of what is taking place in the world, and especially of the appeals made to them by their brothers and sisters in the faith.
If this testimony is not enough for those who oppose us, the Book of the Apocalypse removes every possible doubt through other passages that we shall now cite. For example, in Revelation 5:8 we read: “The four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the Saints.” What do they have to say about this?
However allegorically these words may be interpreted—the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders—the fact remains beyond dispute that the Saints in heaven pray, and that their prayers are certainly directed toward us, their brothers and sisters on earth. In the same Book of the Apocalypse, Revelation 6:9–10, we also read: “And when He opened the fifth seal, I saw beneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony of the Lamb which they held. And they cried with a loud voice, saying, ‘How long, O holy and true Master, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?’” Here again, the fact remains beyond dispute.
The souls of those slain for the word of God are praying, asking for judgment and justice. Confirmation that this is indeed so is found in the answer we read in the same book, Revelation 8:3–4: “And an angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and much incense was given to him, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the Saints upon the golden altar before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of the Saints, ascended from the angel’s hand before God.” Thus another fact is revealed here: not only do the Saints in heaven pray,
but their prayers are also brought before God by angels. Evangelicals cannot easily evade these testimonies, so they resort to other lines of thought and put forward other arguments to defend what they claim to believe. They seize upon something we say concerning the Theotokos, namely: “All my hope I place in you, O Mother of God; keep me beneath your protection.” They fasten upon this and say that we must hope in God alone. And that is true.
It is said and heard, and rightly so, that we must hope in God alone. And indeed we do hope in Him, we tell them. I believe they themselves understand this. Yet they still seek a pretext. They seize upon the phrase “all my hope,” though in this matter one might call it stubbornness rather than a genuine objection. For since the all-good God permits those who are triumphant in heaven to pray for us on earth, as Holy Scripture teaches us, it is certainly not contrary to this teaching for a Christian to say: “My Most Holy Theotokos, concerning what I ask and plead for,
all my hope is that you will help me through your tender, maternal prayers, and that through them I shall obtain what I seek from your Son and our God.” For this is the true meaning of that troparion. But does not Paul, the Apostle to the Nations, writing to the Thessalonians, call them his hope? And not only his hope, but also his joy and crown of boasting. We read in 1 Thessalonians 2:19: “For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of boasting? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His Second Coming?”
They know that our hope, our joy, and whatever else one might call higher, loftier, and more perfect—our soul’s deepest longing—are found in Almighty and All-Powerful God Himself. And just as the Apostle could say that the Thessalonians, because he had preached the Gospel to them, were his hope, his joy, his crown, and his boast at the Second Coming of Christ the Savior, so we believe that we too, knowing the maternal care and compassion of our Lady, the Most Holy Theotokos, and knowing that she stands before her Son, and being benefited by her, may place all our hope in her
that she will bring our prayers before the Savior.
Thank you.
With such precision and sincerity their error is exposed and their arguments collapse; the truth is exalted above all, and the greatness of Orthodoxy shines forth, beloved. The doctrine of the Orthodox Church is shown to be utterly true: the intercession of the saints, which the Church employs and practices in accordance with the guidance, indications, and testimony of the eternal code of human life—the Word of God, Holy Scripture—is true and beneficial. We must therefore give careful heed to it. Yet we Orthodox have not only Scripture, which helps and encourages us and bears witness on our behalf concerning the intercession of the saints.
We also have our Holy Fathers. You know that our Fathers came before them, because they, as you know, appeared around the year 1500. Before them there were saints of God who spoke about these matters. Allow me to quote a few thoughts from holy men concerning the intercession of the saints. Epiphanius, for example, says: “He who honors the Lord also honors the saint, while he who dishonors the saint dishonors his own Master.” How clear and how beautiful! Basil the Great also says: “For the devotion shown toward our fellow servants
is referred to their Master. And whoever honors those who distinguished themselves in the contest thereby declares that their witness was one of great virtue.” Saint Gregory Nazianzen, speaking against Julian, says: “Were you not ashamed—did you feel no shame,” he tells him, “before those who were sacrificed for Christ,” meaning the martyrs, “nor did you fear those great champions: John, Peter, Paul, James, Stephen, Luke, Andrew, Thecla, and all those who, in her time and before them, put themselves in danger for the truth? They willingly contended against fire and sword, wild beasts and tyrants, enduring present torments and threatened sufferings as though their bodies belonged to others, or as though they had no bodies at all. And why? So that they might not betray the faith, even by a single word. Great honors and festivals are held in their memory; through them demons are driven out and diseases are healed. There are their appearances and their prophecies. Their bodies alone possess the same power as their holy souls, whether touched or honored; even mere drops of their blood and small tokens of their suffering
are equal in power to their bodies. Do you not reverence these things, but instead dishonor them?”
It could not be clearer. He honors the saints, their holy relics, their festivals, and so forth. And here we are already in the third century! Basil the Great also says: “I receive the Holy Apostles, Prophets, and Martyrs, and I invoke them in my supplication to God, so that through them—that is, through their intercession—the God who loves mankind may be merciful to me and grant me deliverance from my transgressions.” He says: “In my supplications I invoke all these—the Apostles, the Prophets, and the Martyrs of God. I invoke them to intercede, so that the God who loves mankind may be merciful to me and redeem me from my transgressions, from my sins.” And the divine John Chrysostom
invokes the unbroken unity and ceaseless communion between the Church militant on earth and the Church triumphant in heaven. In his homily on Meletios of Antioch, he calls upon Meletios himself to take part in the prayers of the Church on earth, saying: “Let us all pray together—rulers and those who are ruled, men and women, elders and young people, slaves and free—taking Meletios himself as a fellow participant in this prayer.” This same Father also invokes the Mother of the Lord in intercession, saying: “Thus Deborah spoke to God, and thus Jael spoke to God. For we too have the Holy Virgin and Theotokos Mary interceding for us. If an ordinary woman was victorious, how much more will the Mother of Christ put the enemies of the truth to shame?”
But he is not alone; there are others as well. Origen says: “The souls of those who were beheaded for the testimony of Jesus do not sit beside the heavenly altar in vain; they minister forgiveness of sins to those who pray.” Are the souls of the martyrs, who suffered for the testimony of Jesus, praying in heaven for us in vain? John of Damascus also gives his teaching and says: “Let us venerate and worship only the Creator and Maker, God, who alone by nature is worthy of worship. Let us also venerate the Holy Theotokos, not as God, but as the Mother of God according to the flesh. Let us further venerate the saints as God’s chosen friends, who possess boldness before Him.” Do we really suppose that the testimony of these holy people, who lived long before all those who reject us and make it difficult for us to speak with the Theotokos and the saints, amounts to sin for themselves and for others when they preach this teaching? Why are people scandalized? Why do they not see the truth? Why do they refuse to rightly divide the word of truth? Much is said
and discussed. Scripture certainly tells us to go directly to the Lord, but Scripture does not prevent us from also asking one of His friends, or His Most Holy Mother, for help. There is endless debate about the Most Holy Theotokos, with people saying that we must not appeal to her as an intermediary or intercessor, because, they claim, Paul rejects this. He says that between God and mankind there is one mediator, the man Jesus. This is true. Yet sadly, neither they nor many of us always pay attention to what this passage actually says. They present it as proof that we blaspheme when we say
“Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.” They say, “Do you not see that there is one mediator, one intercessor, one who approaches God on behalf of mankind?” Our answer is cheerful: We see it, and we do not overlook it. But perhaps others are the ones who fail to see it. What does the passage say? It says: “Between God and mankind there is one mediator, the man Jesus.” Is that not what it says? Yes, that is what it says. Christ stands between God and mankind. We agree. But when we ask the Most Holy Theotokos to intercede, we ask: Before whom do we ask her to intercede—before God the Father, or before the Son of God?
Put your hand on your heart and answer. Before whom do we ask her to intercede? Do we place her before God, remove Christ from His place, put the Most Holy Theotokos there instead, and thus become blasphemers? We do not ask the Most Holy Theotokos to intercede before God the Father. We ask her to intercede before Christ. Have these outsiders—the Greek Protestants, Evangelicals, and others I have mentioned—never heard what we say? What do we say? “Intercede before whom? Before Him who was born from you, O Lady of the world; become our intercessor.” We do not say, “Intercede before God the Father.” The matter of holy relics greatly enrages every kind of opponent of us Orthodox Christians.
Taking its authority from Holy Scripture itself, the Orthodox Church reveres and venerates holy relics; it does not worship them. For God Himself says through David in Psalm 33, verse 21:
“He keeps all their bones; not one of them shall be broken.” We ask all who oppose us: Why does the Lord preserve their bones if He does not love and esteem them? He surely has a reason for preserving them, and that reason is none other than that the faithful who are sick may receive grace through them,
and certainly not that unbelievers may blaspheme them. Beloved, wonderworking holy relics have existed since the Old Testament. All these supposed students of the Bible who reject holy relics will, I believe, one day be condemned by that very Bible. In the Old Testament, for example, in Fourth Kingdoms according to the Septuagint—or Second Kings, as it appears in their Bible—chapter 13, verses 20–21, we read the following account of a resurrection brought about through the relics of the Prophet Elisha.
The text reads: “And Elisha died, and they buried him. And bands of Moabites invaded the land at the coming of the year.” A year later, he says, some raiders—some soldiers—came into that region. “And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that behold, they saw the raiding band; and they cast the man into Elisha’s tomb. And when the man touched Elisha’s bones, he revived and stood upon his feet.” They were on their way to bury a man. Meanwhile, soldiers or raiders appeared.
They became frightened and did not carry him to his intended burial place, but hastily threw him into a tomb. It was Elisha’s tomb. The man fell upon Elisha’s relics, came back to life, rose, and went away. The reasonable question, then, is this: Are we to reject the relics of the Prophet, which God honors and through which He even raises the dead? How could we? And if the relics of people from the Old Testament raised the dead, why should the relics of those of the New Testament—nourished and watered by the very Body and Blood of our Lord—not possess grace? Why should they not work miracles? And why should we not treat them with care and honor them? But for all those who come from Papism,
allow us to relate an incident from Rome. It is reported that in the year 557 after Christ, when the tomb of Saint Lawrence was opened so that the body of Saint Stephen, which had been brought from Jerusalem, might also be placed there, Saint Lawrence, whose relics were already inside, did not, of course, raise Saint Stephen, who was to be buried with him. He simply moved aside and yielded the right-hand side of his tomb to his holy fellow deacon, for Lawrence and Stephen were both deacons. According to the Dominican missionary La Dau, Saint Lawrence moved of his own accord,
yielding the right side of his tomb to his guest. Because of this act, he acquired the epithet “the Courteous Spaniard.” What, then, do our opponents have to say? What can they say? We Orthodox certainly believe in the grace present in holy relics, and we have often witnessed miracles through them. I have had the opportunity to record thousands of miracles worked through the contemporary Saint Nektarios of Aegina, in a book entitled Nothing Is Incurable Through Saint Nektarios. In Greece, moreover, we have the relics of Saint Spyridon. We also have the relics of Saint Theodora the Empress on Corfu.
We have the relic of Saint Gerasimos on Kefalonia. On Zakynthos we have the holy relics of Saint Dionysios and Saint Joseph. These are not mummies, as various blasphemers claim. We also have the holy relic of Saint John the Russian at New Prokopion on Evia. These relics are centuries old, yet they remain incorrupt and work miracles. If anyone wishes to receive testimony from the opposing side—that is, from Satan—let him go to Saint Nektarios and listen to those possessed by demons. Let him go to Saint Gerasimos and hear the demons cry, “You have burned me, you who scorch me!” Then he will understand whether the relics that we Orthodox venerate are mummies, or whether they are
temples of the Holy Spirit, working miracles to this very day. My beloved, we Orthodox do not venerate corpses. We venerate temples of the Holy Spirit. There is also Saint Patapios, whose relic is found above Loutraki in our homeland.
There is Saint Irene at the Holy Monastery of the Annunciation in Synousia on Chios, and Saint Savvas on Kalymnos. And we have not even spoken of the holy relics found in Constantinople and Russia. All these are temples of the Holy Spirit. We Orthodox invoke the saints every day, especially those blessed to have a portion of their relics in their own region, in their home, or even upon their person. And I do not know how many more relics remain hidden in the earth, or why the Lord has not yet revealed them.
Saint Savvas the Sanctified, whose relic had been kept by the papists for many years, recently appeared to the previous pope and threatened him. He said, “You will send me home at once, or I will bring great harm upon you.” The pope then hurried to notify Patriarch Benedict of Jerusalem, who sent a delegation.
The pope handed over the relic of Saint Savvas, and today it rests in the saint’s own lavra, the Lavra of Saint Savvas, in the wilderness of the Jordan, in Palestine, near Jerusalem. And is not this detail, related by the men who went to receive him, remarkable? They wished to change the clothes he had been wearing and bring him home in new garments. Like a living man, he raised his arms by himself and helped them dress him in the new clothes. You are not obliged to believe this, but let us not forget that “wondrous is God in His saints.”
I could also share with you news of another relic, which very soon will become known as it is revealed within our Orthodox faith. I am holding in my hand and will read to you part of a letter from the reverend abbot of the Holy Monastery of Hozeva in the Holy Land, dated August 28, 1980. It reads: “The Holy and Venerable Ancient Lavra of Saint George the Hozevite, beside the deepest wilderness of the Jordan.” After first stating the reason for the letter, he continues: “Our news from here
is as follows. Twenty-six years ago, an elder who was a hermit, a hieromonk, and a spiritual father fell asleep in the Lord at one of our monastery’s hermitages, out in the ravine, half an hour away on foot.” I would like you to know that the Holy Monastery of Hozeva stands in the place where the Prophet Elijah remained while being fed by the raven. The cave where Saint Joachim prayed is also there. We should also know that Saint Anna later established a holy women’s monastery for virgins in that region, as it was called, and there she fell asleep in the Lord.
Thus, in what is called the Brook Cherith, in a steep cave half an hour away on foot, the elder fell asleep twenty-six years ago, and we buried him there in his hermitage. A month ago, some Greeks came to our monastery. Many of them had known the elder because they had made their confessions to him. They asked us to go and venerate the elder’s grave there in the cave in the wilderness, the grave of their spiritual father. Out of love I agreed, and we went down into the ravine and to the cave. We climbed up with ladders and ropes to venerate him. They all asked me whether it might be possible to open his grave, so that we could
venerate his relics. We agreed and opened his grave, and there we beheld a great miracle. The elder and hermit was whole. His relic was entirely intact, with his beard, his hair, his cassock, his monastic schema, his priestly stole, and his shoes.
His relic was perspiring and appeared alive. After twenty-six years in the grave, it was as though we had laid him there at that very moment. We were overcome with awe and emotion. We venerated the holy relic, covered him again, and departed. Five or six days later, all the fathers went
We lowered him from the hermitage with ropes and brought him to the monastery. We now have him inside our church, in a temporary coffin. Great numbers of people came and venerated him, including representatives of all the Patriarchates. We also held an all-night vigil. We even went to Jerusalem to commission a glass reliquary in which to place him.
Once we collect the money, we will have the glass reliquary made and place him within it. We also took a photograph. When it is sent to us, we shall send it to you. He looks completely alive. His eyebrows and eyelashes remain without any change. His body is exactly as it was when we buried him. In another letter we shall also send you...
whatever else we can from here, so that you too may rejoice and receive the blessing of the wilderness of the Jordan. Abbot of the Holy Lavra of Hozeva and of the Hermit Fathers, Archimandrite Amphilochios.” My beloved, this did not happen only in those ancient days; it is happening in our own time. I repeat: not only then, but now. The wonders of God are being revealed, and the friends of God are being revealed. “If you remain silent, the stones will cry out.” We have no right to conceal the grace of the Lord manifested through the holy relics and through the friends of God, for we know, as Paul says, “Christ is the same yesterday and today”
“and forever.” In any event, let us continue. At least for us Orthodox, I would like to continue with Patristic theology concerning holy relics. Basil the Great, for example, says of holy relics: “He who touches the bone of a martyr”—that is, whoever touches a martyr’s bone—“receives a share in sanctification from the grace that remains present in the body.” From the grace abiding in the saint’s body, he says, that person receives grace. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His holy one.” Saint Isidore of Pelusium writes to Hierax: “Are you scandalized because we honor the dust of the martyrs’ bodies? If you are scandalized by the dust of the saints’ bodies that we honor, because of their love for God and their steadfastness, ask those who receive healing from them.” At least ask those who receive healings and are cured through these relics, even through the dust of their relics, “and learn how many passions and afflictions they are granted healing from. Then you will not mock what is taking place, but will yourself desire what is sought.” Not only will you cease to stumble over these things, he says, but you too will long for them. In his homily on the holy martyr Babylas, John Chrysostom also says the following:
“To dead bodies that have dissolved into dust, God has granted power greater than that of all the living. How much more, then, will He grant them a life better and more blessed than their former life, when the time comes for the crowns to be bestowed.” If God, he says, has granted to dead bodies that dissolved and became dust a grace greater than that possessed by living bodies, how much more will He grant them a fitting life beyond the grave. Athanasius the Great himself, when recounting the life of Anthony the Great, says that Anthony healed many demon-possessed pagans after saying to them: “Either cleanse them by means of your myths and reasonings—or, if you prefer, by craft or magic, calling upon your own idols.” If you believe that your gods and idols possess power, he says, then cleanse these people from the devils, from the demons.
“Or are you unable to do so? If you cannot, then lay aside your warfare against us, and you will behold the power of the Cross of Christ.” Lay down your weapons, he says, and come behold the power of the Cross. “Then, calling upon Christ, he sealed those who were suffering with the sign of the Cross a second and a third time.”
Immediately they were restored to soundness and blessed the Lord. Those present—the philosophers who witnessed this miracle—marveled and were astonished. Saint Anthony did not say that the Cross had done this by its own power. No, he said that Christ had done it through the Cross. He continued: “Why do you marvel at this? It is not we who perform these things, but Christ, who performs them through those who believe in Him.”
Do we perform these things by our own power, he says?
They maintain this, but true worshippers also entreated the Lord “that they might only touch the hem of His garment; and as many as touched it were made well.” Yes—does it say this in Matthew 14:36, or does it not? And this very thing also happened through the Apostles, not only through the Lord. As we read in Acts: “God worked extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and their diseases left them.” Acts 19:11–13.
Their handkerchiefs, he says, touched people and worked miracles. Peter’s shadow worked miracles, my beloved—yes or no? Why, then, should the Holy Relics not work miracles? Why should these temples of God not work miracles? Why should these grace-filled tabernacles not work miracles? And how have they been preserved to this day? What verdict does science give? Does it not throw up its hands? Why do we pass over all these signs that the Lord has left us, so that we may “not be unbelieving, but believing”? Why such stubbornness? What benefit is there in it? Is this not so? And if it is, then what follows? Since we have tangible evidence that this is so, what are we doing—especially we Orthodox Greeks, who have abandoned our faith, abandoned the beautiful things that were ours, abandoned what was sure...
We abandoned what was firm and took hold of what was rotten. We abandoned the empty tomb of our Christ. We abandoned the empty tomb of our Most Holy Theotokos. We abandoned the Ecumenical Councils. We abandoned the Holy Relics. We abandoned the Precious Cross. We abandoned our Holy Icons. We abandoned our holy church. We abandoned our Mysteries. Where will we find ourselves one day? What have we gained by abandoning them?
Was Orthodoxy for all those years without the Church, without Saints, without the Holy Spirit? What became of all those people? Were they all condemned to Hell, while we who came later are to be saved today? I do not know. Forgive me for my tone and my manner, but we must all take heed—both we who are called Orthodox and all the others who are heterodox. I pray that our Holy God, in this matter...
These traditions of our Holy Church are the teachings of holy people, which help us, in a certain way, to pay heed to what our Church possesses, and more generally to traditions of every kind that date back almost to the earliest days of Christianity.
Ignatius the God-bearer, in one of his letters to Heron, writes these words of exhortation for us: “Anyone who teaches contrary to what has been ordained—that is, contrary to what has been handed down orally and lived within the Church—even if he is considered trustworthy, even if he fasts, even if he works signs and prophesies, let him appear to you as a wolf in sheep’s clothing, seeking to devour the sheep.” Whoever he may be, he says, if he teaches contrary to what has been ordained, contrary to what was given to the Church and has always existed in the Church—even if he works miracles—regard him as a wolf devouring the sheep.
Athanasius the Great, in one of his discourses on the Holy Spirit, says: “Let us also examine, in addition to these things, the tradition, teaching, and faith of the Catholic Church from the beginning, which the Lord gave, the Apostles preached, and the Fathers preserved.” He also says: “I have handed down the apostolic faith delivered to us by the Fathers, devising nothing from outside it.” What I received, that is what I handed down to you.
Saint Gregory Nazianzen also says in one place: “Of the dogmas and proclamations preserved in the Church, some we possess from written teaching, while others we have received as handed down to us in mystery through the tradition of the Apostles. Both have the same force in matters of piety, and no one with even the slightest experience of ecclesiastical institutions disputes them.” And in one of his discourses on fasting, he says: “Come, then, walk through history and search out its ancient origin, for this is no recent invention. Let it be treasured as an inheritance from the Fathers; everything distinguished by antiquity is worthy of reverence.” John Chrysostom likewise says in one of his discourses: “Not everything was handed down by letter...”
“The Apostles handed some things down”—that is, they did not put everything into writing—“but many things they handed down without writing. Both the written and the unwritten are equally worthy of trust.” Both, he says, are trustworthy. “Therefore, we also regard the tradition of the Church as trustworthy.” Thus we are to regard the tradition of the Church as worthy of trust. “It is tradition; seek nothing further.” If something is a tradition—if it has existed, has been practiced, and has been accepted by the Church—“seek nothing further.” Do not pry into it. Do not try to invent something of your own. Do not try to overthrow it under the pretense of correcting it. Since “it is tradition, seek nothing further.” This is what I too could say...
I, a sinner, could say the same in this case. For us Orthodox, everything concerning the Theotokos, the Holy Relics, the Holy Icons, and all the rest “is tradition.” “Seek nothing further.” Put it into practice and be at peace, knowing that the Lord will find a way to save you. My beloved, I pray that these few words today may offer some small help in our whole endeavor. Once again, rejoice in the Lord, my beloved.

Μας λέγουν, λοιπόν, ότι είναι νεκροί οι Άγιοι και δεν μπορούμε να τους επικαλεστούμε. Είναι δυνατόν να πιστέψουμε εμείς ότι οι άνθρωποι αυτοί δεν γνωρίζουν αυτό που αναφέρεται στον Ιωάννη Ε΄ 24; Δηλαδή το «Αμήν, αμήν λέγω υμίν, ότι ο τον λόγον μου ακούων και πιστεύων τω πέμψαντί με έχει ζωήν αιώνιον και εις κρίσιν ουκ έρχεται, αλλά μεταβέβηκεν εκ του θανάτου εις την ζωήν». Είναι δυνατόν να πιστέψουμε ότι οι άνθρωποι αυτοί δεν γνωρίζουν το εδάφιο Ιωάννου ΙΑ΄ 25-26, που λέγει: «Ο πιστεύων εις εμέ, καν αποθάνη, ζήσεται· και πας ο ζων και πιστεύων εις εμέ ου μη αποθάνη εις τον αιώνα»; Πώς, λοιπόν, οι Άγιοι απέθανον; Οι Άγιοι δεν αντιλαμβάνονται; Οι Άγιοι είναι ιστορικοί;
Οι Άγιοι, αγαπητοί μου, καν αποθάνουν, ζήσονται. Αλλά, πριν προχωρήσουμε στα σχετικά προς την άποψη αυτή, στας γραφικάς μαρτυρίας της Γραφής, λέγομεν προς αυτούς φιλικώς ότι οι Άγιοι του Θεού, αγαπητοί κύριοι, ακόμη εν σώματι κατόρθωναν, διά θείου βεβαίως φωτισμού, διά του Αγίου Πνεύματος, να διεισδύουν εις τας καρδίας των ανθρώπων. Ο Απόστολος Πέτρος, παραδείγματος χάριν, δεν διεισέδυσεν εις την καρδία του Ανανία και του απεκάλυψεν ότι ψεύδεται, όπως διαβάζουμε στις Πράξεις των Αποστόλων, στο Ε΄ 3;
Είχαν, λοιπόν, δύναμη, ζώντες ακόμη, να γνωρίζουν τα συμβάντα τα οποία έγιναν μακράν αυτών. Ο προφήτης Ελισσαίος δεν εγνώριζε από του μακρόθεν ότι ο υπηρέτης του Γιεζί έλαβε δώρα παρά του Σύρου Νεεμάν, τον οποίον, λεπρόν όντα, αυτός είχε θεραπεύσει; Δεν το διαβάζουμε αυτό στο Δ΄ Βασιλέων ή Β΄ Βασιλέων, όπως είναι η δικιά τους η Γραφή, στο 5ο κεφάλαιο, 26-27; Δεν μαρτυρεί επίσης η Αγία Γραφή ότι οι Άγιοι, ευρισκόμενοι επί της γης, εισέβαινον εις τον ουράνιο κόσμο και άλλοι μεν τούτων είδον αγγέλους, όπως ο Ιακώβ, άλλοι δε ανήλθαν μέχρι τρίτου ουρανού και ήκουσαν άρρητα ρήματα, ως ο Απόστολος Παύλος;
δύνανται να πρεσβεύσωσι και να παρακαλέσωσι υπέρ των Ιουδαίων. Αλλά, εκτός αυτών, ο Κύριος εν τοις Ευαγγελίοις αποκαλύπτει ότι υπάρχει αδιάκοπος επικοινωνία μεταξύ του αοράτου και του ορατού κόσμου, μεταξύ του ουρανού και της γης. Δεν το κάνει αυτό; Δεν το λέει το Ευαγγέλιο αυτό; Δεν λέει στο Ματθαίο ΙΗ΄ 10: «Οράτε μη καταφρονήσητε ενός των μικρών τούτων· λέγω γαρ υμίν ότι οι άγγελοι αυτών εν τοις ουρανοίς διά παντός βλέπουσι το πρόσωπον του Πατρός μου του εν ουρανοίς»; Εάν οι άγγελοι παρακολουθούν και τον πιο μικρό αδελφό, τα συμβαίνοντα εις αυτόν, και τα καθιστούν αυτά γνωστά στον ουρανό, πόσο μάλλον θα αναφέρουν τα εις ολόκληρον την οικουμένη συμβαίνοντα, παρά λαών ολοκλήρων, επικαλουμένων αυτούς τους Αγγέλους και τους αξίους αυτούς Αγίους του Θεού;
Αν δεν αρκούν αυτά, η ανωτέρω δηλαδή αυτή μαρτυρία, για τους υπεναντίους, το βιβλίο της Αποκαλύψεως εξαφανίζει πάσαν ή οιανδήποτε αμφιβολία με άλλα τα οποία γράφει και τα οποία θα παραθέσουμε. Διαβάζουμε, επί παραδείγματι, στην Αποκάλυψη Ε΄ 8 τα εξής: «Τα τέσσερα», λέει, «ζώα και οι είκοσι τέσσερις πρεσβύτεροι έπεσαν ενώπιον του Αρνίου, έχοντες έκαστος κιθάραν και φιάλας χρυσάς γεμούσας θυμιαμάτων, αι εισίν αι προσευχαί των Αγίων». Τι έχουν να πούνε γι’ αυτό;
«Πρεσβείαις Θεοτόκου, Σώτερ, σώσον ημάς». Δεν βλέπετε, λέγει, ότι ένας είναι ο μεσίτης, ένας είναι ο πρεσβευτής, ένας είναι αυτός που εντυγχάνει εις τον Θεόν μεταξύ των ανθρώπων και του Θεού; Η απάντησή μας είναι ιλαρά: Το βλέπουμε και δεν το παραβλέπουμε. Αλλά μήπως άλλοι δεν το βλέπουν; Τι λέγει το εδάφιο αυτό; Αυτό λέγει: «Μεταξύ Θεού και ανθρώπων, μεσίτης εις, άνθρωπος Ιησούς». Αυτό δεν λέγει; Αυτό λέει. Μεταξύ του Θεού και των ανθρώπων είναι ο Χριστός στη μέση. Σύμφωνοι. Εμείς, όταν βάζουμε την Παναγία μας να πρεσβεύσει, ερωτούμε: Πού τη βάζουμε να πρεσβεύσει, στον Θεό ή στον Υιό του Θεού;
Τα γερά, και πιάσαμε τα σαθρά. Αφήσαμε τον τάφο τον άδειο του Χριστού μας. Αφήσαμε τον τάφο τον άδειο της Παναγίας μας. Αφήσαμε τις Οικουμενικές Συνόδους. Αφήσαμε τα Άγια Λείψανα. Αφήσαμε τον Τίμιο Σταυρό. Αφήσαμε τις Άγιες Εικόνες μας. Αφήσαμε τον Ιερό Ναό μας. Αφήσαμε τα Μυστήριά μας. Πού θα βρεθούμε μια ημέρα; Τι εκερδίσαμε που τα αφήσαμε;
